Volcanic peaks in Central Java - Earth.com

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features an astronaut view of two neighboring stratovolcanoes – Mount Sundoro and Mount Sumbing – on the Indonesian island of Java.

According to NASA, these two cone-shaped volcanic peaks in Central Java province are part of a larger east to west chain of volcanoes. The peaks of these volcanoes rise more than 10,000 feet above sea level.

Even though they are both considered to be active volcanoes, Mount Sundoro has not erupted since 1971 and Mount Sumbing has not erupted since 1730. The image was captured on May 10, 2021 by an astronaut onboard the International Space Station (ISS).
