In tropical forests, lightning strikes the most resilient trees
Lightning may influence the composition of tropical forests, according to a new study led by Steve Yanoviak of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. The results of the study suggest that the tropical trees which are most likely to be struck are also the most resilient to lightning strikes.  Over the course of several years, a team of lightning scientists and tropical field biologists analyzed the effects of lightning strikes on the Panama Canal forests of the Barro Colorado Nature Monument.
