Today’s Image of the Day comes from the European Space Agency and features a look at the erupting Mount Etna volcano in Sicily. The photo was captured this week by the ESA’s Sentinel 2-A satellite.

Mount Etna is not only the largest active volcano in Europe, but also one of the most continuously erupting volcanoes in the world. This week’s eruption, however, was unusually violent and sudden.

In the center of the image, lava flow can be seen oozing out of the Earth. The surrounding blue is actually snow that has been colored in order to distinguish it from clouds floating above.
