Today’s Image of the Day comes thanks to the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at forest fires burning in British Columbia, Canada.

The fires broke out earlier this month following an unusually long period of hot and dry weather. An infestation of mountain pine beetles didn’t help matters either, killing off a significant number of trees.

Over 70 different fires were reported burning as of July 19, 2017, spanning over 1,000 square miles.

This image was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard NASA’s Terra satellite.
