Hurricane Lane charges toward the Hawaiian Islands

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows Hurricane Lane as it churns across the Pacific Ocean toward the Hawaiian Islands with maximum sustained winds of 155 miles per hour.

The track that Hurricane Lane will take as it gets closer to the state is not yet clear. While direct hits on Hawaii are rare, forecasts from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center predict that the center of the storm will pass “very close to or over the main Hawaiian Islands” between August 23rd and 25th.

This image was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite at 10:45 a.m. Hawaii Standard Time on August 21, 2018.
