Today’s Image of the Day comes courtesy of the NASA Earth Observatory and features a stunning overhead view of nighttime in Naples, Italy. The photo was taken by an astronaut aboard the International Space Station.

Much of Naples is seen lit up by vibrant metropolitan life, though Mount Vesuvius is visible as the dark circle in the lower right portion of the image. Vesuvius is a stratovolcano and the only active volcano on Europe’s mainland. Just below Vesuvius sits Pompeii, which was famously destroyed in 79 AD by pyroclastic flows of hot ash and gas, killing over 16,000 people.
