Thick smoke breaks records over northwest Canada

Thick smoke breaks records over northwest Canada Today’s Image of the Day comes thanks to the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at the thick smoke floating over northwest Canada.

Furious forest fires have been burning in British Columbia for well over a month, and now powerful winds have kicked the smoke up into the atmosphere where it lingers.

The fires have burned through coniferous forests already dried out from drought and mountain pine beetle infestations.

This image was captured by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer (VIIRS) onboard NASA’s Suomi NPP satellite on August 15, 2017.
