Volcano eruption has destroyed 1,000 buildings on La Palma

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features a glimpse of the ongoing Cumbre Vieja volcano eruption on La Palma in the Canary Islands.

According to NASA, tremors and small earthquakes are regularly shaking the ground, and the plume of volcanic ash rising from the summit has become persistent and occasionally more explosive.

Since the eruption began on September 19, 2021, lava has covered around 1,750 acres and has destroyed more than 1,000 homes and buildings.

The image was captured on October 4 by an astronaut aboard the International Space Station.
