Dixie Fire has been burning for a month • Earth.com

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features the Dixie Fire, which has been raging across four counties in Northern California since July 13, 2021.

The Dixie Fire has burned at least 490,000 acres, which is more than twice the area of New York City, making it the second largest in California’s recorded history. Thousands of people have been displaced.

By Monday, the blaze was about 25 percent contained, but high pressure building over the western United States could cause new challenges this week. Experts say that extreme heat and strong winds could accelerate the fire.
