Fall colors fade in the Dzhugdzhur Mountains

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features a natural-color image of the Dzhugdzhur Mountains in Siberia captured by the Landsat 8 satellite.

When the photograph was taken on October 9, 2021, the fall colors had mostly faded in this remote region of Russia’s Far East.

NASA reports that in September, the river valleys of the Dzhugdzhur mountains were colored with brilliant yellows and oranges as birches, larch, and other deciduous vegetation reached peak color.

By October, the leaves had withered and turned brown. Higher up, spruce and pine forests remained green.
