The Meidob Volcanic Field in Sudan • Earth.com

Today’s Image of the Day comes thanks to the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at the Meidob Volcanic Field in Sudan.

The Meidob Volcanic Field spans an area of about 1,930 square miles on the western side of Sudan. It includes almost 700 vents that are believed to be just under 6 million years old.

That said, an eruption hasn’t occurred since around 2950 BCE.

This image was taken by an astronaut on board the International Space Station using a Nikon D4 digital camera with a 1150 millimeter lens.
