<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grapevines-could-offer-a-breakthrough-alternative-to-plastic-packaging/">Plastic</a> bags are everywhere, and too many slip into rivers and onto beaches. A new analysis finds that policies that either charge a small fee per bag or prohibit them outright cut the share of bags found during shoreline cleanups by 25 to 47 percent.</p>



<p>The study combed through hundreds of city, county, and state rules passed between 2017 and 2023. It matched those policies to more than 45,000 volunteer cleanups across the United States to see what actually changed on the ground.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-who-ran-the-study">Who ran the study</h2>



<p>The research was coauthored by <a href="https://www.udel.edu/academics/colleges/ceoe/departments/smsp/faculty/kimberly-oremus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kimberly L. Oremus</a> of the University of Delaware’s School of Marine Science and Policy (<a href="https://www.udel.edu/academics/colleges/ceoe/departments/smsp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UDEL</a>). </p>



<p>Oremus and her collaborator set out to measure litter, not just shopping behavior, so the results speak to what ends up in nature.</p>



<p>The team relied on citizen science, meaning trained volunteers recorded what they collected during beach, river, and lake cleanups. </p>



<p>They drew on <a href="https://www.coastalcleanupdata.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TIDES</a>, a public database that stores those counts in one place so researchers can analyze patterns across time and place.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-plastic-bag-policies">Studying plastic bag policies</h2>



<p>To isolate the effect of bag policies, the authors used a Difference-in-Differences (<a href="https://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/research/population-health-methods/difference-difference-estimation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DiD</a>) approach that compares places with and without new laws over the same period. </p>



<p>That design helps rule out unrelated trends that affect everyone, such as national shifts in shopping or packaging.</p>



<p>The headline result is simple. In communities with full bans or fees, the share of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-from-plastic-bottles-linked-to-high-blood-pressure-and-heart-problems/">plastic</a> bags in the litter mix fell relative to similar places without policies, and the decline grew in the years after a law took effect.</p>



<p>State level rules tended to be more reliable in the data than city or county policies. Effects looked similar along coasts and rivers, with hints of larger gains along lakes where winds and currents spread litter differently.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-policy-fees-vs-bans">Plastic policy: Fees vs. bans</h2>



<p>Fees change the default at every checkout and discourage taking a bag when you do not need one, which reduces both thin and thicker bag use.</p>



<p>Other <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/carrier-bag-charge-summary-of-data-in-england/single-use-plastic-carrier-bags-charge-data-for-england-2024-to-2025" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence</a> points in the same direction outside the United States. England reports an almost 98 percent drop in single use carrier bags at major retailers since its charge began.</p>



<p>Policies that only restrict thin bags often allow thicker <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/agricultural-soil-is-now-the-worlds-biggest-plastic-dumping-ground/">plastic</a> labeled as reusable. </p>



<p>Those partial bans showed the smallest and least precise effects in the analysis, which is consistent with shoppers substituting one kind of plastic for another.</p>



<p>Some states also pass preemption <a href="https://www.ncsl.org/environment-and-natural-resources/state-plastic-bag-legislation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">laws</a> that block cities and counties from regulating bags at all. When local governments cannot act, the study’s data suggest statewide policies become especially important.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildlife-and-entanglement">Wildlife and entanglement</h2>



<p>The cleanup records include notes on animals found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-found-in-99-percent-sea-turtles-organ-tissue-reproductive-system/">entangled in debris</a>. </p>



<p>In areas with bag policies, the presence of entangled animals dropped by roughly 30 to 37 percent, although the authors caution that the estimates are imprecise and more data are needed.</p>



<p>That finding aligns with what we know about <a href="https://www.nrdc.org/stories/single-use-plastics-101" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">single-use-plastics</a>. Thin bags linger in water and along shorelines, where they can snag, smother, or be eaten by turtles, birds, and fish.</p>



<p>Many studies track what happens at store checkouts, but fewer track what ends up outdoors. Shoreline cleanups offer a window into that last step in the chain from purchase to pollution.</p>



<p>Across the study period, the share of bags among collected items rose overall, but it rose less where bag laws existed. That pattern is exactly what you want to see if policies are slowing the flow of litter into the environment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-plastic-policy-steps">Global plastic policy steps</h2>



<p>A small, universal fee is a simple tool that nudges behavior without banning choices. Full bans can work too, and the analysis shows both approaches reduce the share of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/glass-bottles-contain-more-microplastics-than-plastic-containers/">plastic</a> bags found during cleanups.</p>



<p>The mix of policies should match local conditions. In places with more bag litter to begin with, impacts were largest, so targeting high problem areas with fast action can deliver quick gains.</p>



<p>Plastic bag rules are only one part of the picture. Negotiators from 175 countries are working toward a plastics treaty under <a href="https://www.unep.org/inc-plastic-pollution" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNEP</a> that could standardize action on a wider set of products and chemicals.</p>



<p>The study notes that bottles, caps, and other items did not decline when bag policies passed. That is a signal that targeted rules for other single use products would be needed to curb overall litter.</p>



<p>Adopt a modest fee or a full ban that applies across retail and restaurant settings, and keep the text simple so it is easy to enforce. Pair the policy with clear signs at checkout and with retailer reporting that tracks compliance.</p>



<p>Measure results in the same way the researchers did. Recruit volunteers, log items in TIDES, and watch how the litter mix changes year over year so the policy can be adjusted as needed.</p>

This unexpected turn of events offers valuable insights into how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rhesus-monkeys-quickly-learn-that-patience-is-rewarding/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animals adapt to environmental challenges</a> and the power of social connections in times of crisis.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-storm-that-changed-everything">The storm that changed everything</h2>



<p>In 2017,&nbsp;Hurricane Maria,&nbsp;a powerful Category 4 storm,&nbsp;made landfall in Puerto Rico,&nbsp;leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.&nbsp;The storm's impact was not limited to the mainland; the nearby island of Cayo Santiago,&nbsp;a small island off the coast of Puerto Rico,&nbsp;was also severely affected.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Cayo Santiago,&nbsp;often referred to as "Monkey Island," is home to a well-established population of rhesus macaques that have been the subject of scientific research for over 80 years.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The hurricane decimated the island's ecosystem,&nbsp;stripping away 63% of its vegetation.&nbsp;This loss of foliage significantly reduced the availability of shade,&nbsp;a crucial resource for the monkeys to cope with the intense tropical heat.&nbsp;The monkeys were suddenly confronted with a drastically altered environment and limited options for shelter from the sun.</p>



<p>“In response to the drastic changes caused by the hurricane, macaques persistently increased tolerance and decreased aggression towards each other,”&nbsp;said Dr. Camille Testard from the <a href="https://www.upenn.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Pennsylvania</a>.&nbsp;This change in behavior wasn't just a temporary blip; it persisted for years after the storm.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cooperation-on-monkey-island-after-hurricane">Cooperation on Monkey Island after hurricane</h2>



<p>Why did the monkeys suddenly become more cooperative? The answer lies in the concept of "selection pressure." </p>



<p>In the pre-hurricane <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coastal-hurricanes-are-intensifying-faster-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environment</a>, where shade was plentiful, there was no evolutionary advantage to being tolerant of others. But after the storm, the ability to share shade became a matter of life or death. Monkeys who were more tolerant were more likely to survive and pass on their genes, leading to a shift in the overall <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/male-proboscis-monkeys-use-big-noses-attract-mates-nasalis-larvatus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social dynamics</a> of the population.</p>



<p>“Before the hurricane, tolerating others had no impact on risk of death. Afterwards, macaques that displayed more than average social tolerance - and were therefore better able to share shade - were 42% less likely to die than those that were less tolerant,”&nbsp;explained Dr. Testard.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-new-social-order-on-monkey-island">A new social order on Monkey Island</h2>



<p>The study revealed that the monkeys' newfound tolerance extended beyond just sharing shade. They also spent more time grooming each other and engaging in other affiliative behaviors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Macaques that began sharing shade also spend time together in the mornings, before the day’s heat forces them to seek shade. In effect, the hurricane changed the rules of the game in the monkeys’ society,”&nbsp;said Dr. Testard.</p>



<p>This remarkable transformation challenges the traditional view of rhesus macaques as aggressive and competitive. It demonstrates their surprising flexibility and resilience in the face of adversity. </p>



<p>“We were surprised the macaques’ social behavior was so flexible, making them resilient to this environmental change, but some species may not display this same flexibility,” stated Professor Lauren Brent from the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Exeter</a>.</p>

<p>The significant role of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-southern-ocean-could-become-seven-times-hotter-this-century/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Southern Ocean</a> in global biological processes and the carbon cycle has been reconfirmed by a recent study published in the journal <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adh8199" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Science</em></a>. The research reveals the overlooked importance of inorganic zinc particles.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-zinc-and-dissolved-silica-nbsp">Zinc and dissolved silica&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The Southern Ocean significantly contributes to global phytoplankton productivity, absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zinc, although present in trace amounts in seawater, is a crucial micronutrient - especially for polar <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/phytoplankton-resilient-nutrient-stress/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">phytoplankton</a> blooms. When phytoplankton blooms die off, zinc is released, playing a critical role in ocean processes.</p>



<p>Historically, scientists have noted a puzzling disconnection between zinc and phosphorus, despite both nutrients being co-located in phytoplankton regions. Instead, they discovered a strong and unexplained correlation between zinc and dissolved silica.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-ocean-s-zinc-cycle-nbsp">Understanding the ocean’s zinc cycle&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Professor Alakendra Roychoudhury from <a href="https://www.sun.ac.za/english" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stellenbosch University</a>, a co-author of the study, argued that scientists can now confidently explain the biogeochemical processes driving the ocean’s zinc cycle. </p>



<p>Since 2013, Roychoudhury's team has participated in expeditions on South Africa’s polar research vessel, the SA Agulhas II, collecting sea water and sediment samples across the Southern Ocean.</p>



<p>“Processes occurring in the Southern Ocean are imprinted on water masses which are then transported to the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans,” said co-lead author Ryan Cloete, a scientist at LEMAR in France. Collaborating with a team of international researchers, the scientists used X-ray spectroscopic techniques to analyze samples at the atomic and molecular levels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-replenishment-of-dissolved-zinc">Replenishment of dissolved zinc</h2>



<p>The findings indicate that higher productivity in summer increases the availability of zinc in the surface ocean’s organic fraction for phytoplankton uptake. However, they also found high concentrations of zinc associated with debris from rocks, earth, and atmospheric dust.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This interplay between zinc’s association or dissociation from particles is crucial for replenishing dissolved zinc to support <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-impacting-marine-life-more-than-we-realized/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">marine life</a>.</p>



<p>“In winter, poor growing conditions cause zinc particles to be ‘scavenged’ by inorganic solids like silica, iron, and aluminum oxides, explaining the strong association between zinc and silica in the oceans,” Cloete explained.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coupling-between-biochemical-processes">Coupling between biochemical processes</h2>



<p>Zinc bound to organic ligands is easily absorbed by marine life, whereas zinc in mineral form is not readily available, leading to its eventual sinking to the deep ocean and becoming inaccessible to phytoplankton.</p>



<p>“A warmer climate increases erosion, leading to more atmospheric dust and more scavenging of zinc particles, reducing zinc availability for marine life,” noted Roychoudhury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to Cloete, such an approach to studying the oceanic zinc cycle opens the door to investigating other micronutrients, like copper, cadmium, and cobalt, which could also experience climate-induced changes.</p>



<p>“Our findings are a prime example of the coupling between biochemical processes at the molecular level and global processes like planetary warming,” Roychoudhury concluded.</p>

<p>Published in Environment International, the study led by researchers from Nanyang Technological University (<a href="https://www.ntu.edu.sg/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NTU</a>), Singapore, defines premature deaths as those occurring earlier than expected due to preventable or treatable causes such as diseases and environmental factors.</p>

<p>Asia experienced the highest number of premature deaths due to PM2.5 pollution, with China and India accounting for 49.0 million and 26.1 million deaths, respectively. </p>



<p>Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Japan also reported significant numbers of pollution-attributable premature deaths.</p>



<p>The study found that the simultaneous occurrence of the three major weather phenomena resulted in approximately 7,000 additional global premature deaths annually. </p>



<p>The Indian Ocean Dipole had the most significant impact, followed by the North Atlantic Oscillation and El Niño.</p>

<p>The researchers emphasize the need for policymakers to prioritize public health when developing air quality strategies. </p>

<p>Associate Professor Steve Yim of NTU's <a href="https://www.ntu.edu.sg/ase" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Asian School of the Environment</a> and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine emphasized the significant impact of climate patterns on air pollution levels. </p>



<p>"Our findings show that changes in climate patterns can make air pollution worse," Yim stated. </p>



<p>He further explained that climate phenomena like El Niño can exacerbate PM2.5 pollution, potentially leading to increased premature deaths. Yim stressed the importance of incorporating climate pattern analysis into air pollution mitigation strategies to effectively safeguard public health worldwide.</p>

<p>Researchers at the University of Virginia <a href="https://engineering.virginia.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of Engineering and Applied Science</a> have discovered how to scale up the production of a highly efficient “wonder material,” MOF-525, for large-scale applications. </p>



<p>This material, part of the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) class, has unique properties that allow it to capture <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-capture-technology-faces-uncertainty-despite-heavy-investment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon dioxide</a> and convert it into valuable chemicals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-wonder-material-works">How the wonder material works</h2>



<p>The breakthrough was achieved by Gaurav Giri's lab group, which developed a method called solution shearing to fabricate large membranes of MOF-525. This technique involves mixing MOF components in a solution and spreading it across a substrate with a shearing blade.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As the solution evaporates, the MOF forms a thin film on the substrate, creating an all-in-one membrane for carbon capture and conversion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-membranes-for-carbon-capture-nbsp">Membranes for carbon capture&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“If you can make these MOFs cover large areas, then new applications become possible, like making a membrane for carbon capture and electrocatalytic conversion all in one system,” Giri explained. Electrocatalytic conversion links <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/renewable-energy-must-be-doubled-by-2030/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">renewable energy</a> sources to chemical synthesis, bypassing fossil fuel combustion.</p>



<p>MOFs have ultra-porous, crystalline structures with nanoscale cavities, creating vast internal surface areas that trap various chemical compounds. The team's method allows for scaling up the production of MOF-525 membranes, enhancing surface area and reaction efficiency.</p>



<p>“With this process, you can increase the shearing blade width to whatever size you need,” said lead author Prince Verma, a PhD graduate from Giri’s lab.</p>

<p>A recent study reveals that the surrounding seas contain enough fish to support these increased seabird populations, a crucial factor often overlooked in previous restoration efforts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seabirds-and-invasive-rats">Seabirds and invasive rats</h2>



<p>Seabird populations decline drastically due to invasive rats, which prey on seabird eggs, chicks, and even adult birds. Rats, introduced to islands by human activities, pose a severe threat to seabirds, especially on islands where seabirds evolved without such predators. </p>



<p>Seabirds typically nest on the ground or in burrows, making their nests highly accessible to rats. These invasive rodents consume eggs and young birds, disrupting the breeding success of seabird colonies. </p>



<p>With fewer chicks surviving to adulthood, seabird populations cannot sustain themselves and begin to dwindle. This predation pressure leads to significant declines in seabird numbers, affecting the entire island ecosystem. </p>



<p>Seabirds play crucial roles in nutrient cycling and supporting other wildlife, so their decline impacts biodiversity and ecological health. Effective restoration efforts, such as rat eradication and habitat restoration, are essential to reviving seabird populations and restoring island ecosystems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-restoring-seabird-populations">Restoring seabird populations </h2>



<p>The first-of-its-kind study, led by marine scientists from <a href="https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lancaster University</a>, highlights the significant impact of restoring seabird populations on island ecosystems.</p>



<p>“We know that invasive species, such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rats-on-tropical-islands-change-reef-fish-behavior/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rats</a>, have devastating impacts on native seabird populations - they eat the eggs, chicks, and even sometimes adult birds,” explained Dr. Dunn, the lead author.</p>



<p>“Restoration projects that remove invasive species, such as rats, are effective. However, it is also important to know if restored <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-heatwaves-are-causing-massive-seabird-mortality-events/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seabird populations</a> will have enough fish to hunt and eat, especially as threats like overfishing and climate change make fish populations more uncertain.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-energy-requirements-and-fish-availability">Energy requirements and fish availability</h2>



<p>The researchers assessed the energy needs of restored seabird populations and the quantity of prey fish using available data. </p>



<p>The focus was on the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, which includes nature reserves where fishing is restricted. These protected areas may influence the availability of prey fish for seabirds.</p>



<p>“Our study was the first to factor in this important consideration, and encouragingly, we found that there is enough fish in the sea for restored populations of seabirds,” Dr. Dunn noted.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-of-seabird-restoration-efforts">Potential of seabird restoration efforts </h2>



<p>The team modeled three scenarios for 25 islands: complete <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rat-eradication-is-beneficial-for-seabirds-and-coral-reefs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rat eradication</a>, partial restoration of native vegetation, and extensive vegetation restoration. The results were promising:</p>



<ul>
<li><strong>Rat eradication alone</strong> could result in nearly 24,000 breeding pairs of lesser noddies, sooty terns, and red-footed boobies.</li>



<li><strong>Partial vegetation restoration</strong> (half of the island's surface) could increase this number to 83,000 pairs.</li>



<li><strong>Extensive vegetation restoration</strong> (three-quarters of the island's surface) could boost the breeding pairs to over 280,000.</li>
</ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-benefits-to-coral-reefs">Benefits to coral reefs</h2>



<p>The positive effects of seabird restoration extend beyond the islands themselves. Seabird droppings, known as guano, are rich in nitrogen and phosphorus, which fertilize surrounding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-reveal-the-health-of-coral-reefs-in-real-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coral reef</a> environments.</p>



<p>Increased seabird numbers could boost nitrogen input from 78 tons to 170 tons annually, leading to a 52% increase in fish biomass on the reefs, approximately 50,000 tons more reef fish.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-enhancing-coral-reef-resilience">Enhancing coral reef resilience</h2>



<p>Restoration would also significantly increase grazing fish populations, such as parrotfish, which play crucial roles in maintaining healthy reefs by eating algae and removing dead coral. This helps reefs recover from disturbances like storms and bleaching events.</p>



<p>“These findings underscore the substantial role island restoration can have not just in bolstering vulnerable seabird populations, but also in enhancing the resilience of adjacent coral reefs to the impacts of climate change,” said Professor Graham, a co-author of the study.</p>

<p>In conclusion, restoring rat-free islands holds immense potential for reviving seabird populations and bolstering the health and resilience of coral reef ecosystems. The findings serve as a vital guide for future restoration efforts worldwide.</p>

<p>A recent study conducted by the <a href="https://www.globalcarbonproject.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Global Carbon Project</a> has revealed that emissions of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-levels-of-nitrous-oxide-will-accelerate-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nitrous oxide</a>, a potent greenhouse gas, continued unabated from 1980 to 2020. In 2020 alone, over 10 million metric tons of nitrous oxide were released, primarily due to agricultural practices.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study, published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.5194/essd-2023-401" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Earth System Science Data</em></a>, indicates that 74% of these emissions in the 2010s came from farming, specifically from the use of chemical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-emissions-from-fertilizers-could-be-cut-by-80-percent/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fertilizers</a> and animal waste on croplands.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nitrous-oxide-and-global-warming-nbsp">Nitrous oxide and global warming&nbsp;</h2>



<p>According to the report “<a href="https://www.globalcarbonproject.org/nitrousoxidebudget/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Global Nitrous Oxide Budget 2024</a>,” led by researchers from <a href="https://www.bc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Boston College</a>, nitrous oxide emissions increased at an unprecedented rate during 2020 and 2021, highlighting the urgent need for reducing these emissions to combat global warming.&nbsp;</p>



<p>On Earth, excess nitrogen contributes to soil, water, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-will-increase-dramatically-in-a-hotter-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">air pollution</a>, while in the atmosphere, it depletes the ozone layer and exacerbates climate change.</p>



<p>“Nitrous oxide emissions from human activities must decline in order to limit global temperature rise to 2°C as established by the Paris Agreement,” said lead author Hanqin Tian, a professor of global sustainability at Boston College.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Reducing nitrous oxide emissions is the only solution since at this point no technologies exist that can remove nitrous oxide from the atmosphere.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-increased-use-of-nitrogen-fertilizers-nbsp">Increased use of nitrogen fertilizers&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study reveals a significant increase in the use of nitrogen fertilizers, which rose from 60 million metric tons in 1980 to 107 million metric tons in 2020. Additionally, animal manure contributed 101 million metric tons in 2020, leading to a combined total of 208 million metric tons.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This unchecked rise in nitrous oxide, with a global warming potential 300 times larger than carbon dioxide, poses dire consequences for the planet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-millions-of-nitrous-oxide-measurements-nbsp">Millions of nitrous oxide measurements&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers analyzed millions of nitrous oxide measurements taken over four decades from various sources, making this the most comprehensive assessment of global nitrous oxide emissions and sinks to date.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team examined data from all major economic activities leading to nitrous oxide emissions and reported on 18 anthropogenic and natural sources and three absorbent sinks.</p>



<p>The top 10 nitrous oxide-emitting countries identified in the study are China, India, the United States, Brazil, Russia, Pakistan, Australia, Indonesia, Turkey, and Canada. </p>



<p>While some regions, like China and Europe, have successfully implemented policies to reduce emissions, others, including the U.S., continue to see a rise in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/agricultural-emissions-negatively-impact-our-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">agricultural emissions</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-need-for-improved-agricultural-practices-nbsp">Need for improved agricultural practices&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Josep Canadell, Global Carbon Project Executive Director and a research scientist at <a href="https://www.csiro.au/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CSIRO</a>, emphasized the need for improved agricultural practices and more frequent assessments to target high-emission regions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The growth rates of atmospheric nitrous oxide in 2020 and 2021 were higher than any previous observed year and more than 30 percent higher than the average rate of increase in the previous decade,” he warned.</p>



<p>To effectively mitigate nitrous oxide emissions, it is crucial to adopt strategies that limit the use of nitrogen fertilizers and manage animal waste better, the authors concluded.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sources-of-nitrous-oxide-emissions-nbsp">Sources of nitrous oxide emissions&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The largest sources of nitrous oxide emissions are primarily from agricultural activities, including the use of synthetic and organic fertilizers and manure management. Industrial processes, such as the production of nitric acid and adipic acid, also contribute significantly.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Fossil fuel combustion in vehicles and power plants, biomass burning including forest fires and agricultural waste burning, and residential wood burning are additional sources.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Waste management practices, such as the decomposition of organic waste in landfills and wastewater treatment, also release nitrous oxide into the atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dangers-of-nitrous-oxide-emissions-nbsp">Dangers of nitrous oxide emissions&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions pose significant environmental and health risks. As a potent greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide has a global warming potential approximately 300 times greater than that of carbon dioxide over a 100-year period, contributing significantly to climate change.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-uv-radiation-nbsp">UV radiation&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Additionally, nitrous oxide is a major contributor to the depletion of the ozone layer, which protects living organisms from harmful <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/uv-radiation-played-a-role-in-earths-largest-mass-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ultraviolet radiation</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The increased UV exposure due to ozone layer depletion can lead to higher incidences of skin cancer, cataracts, and other health issues in humans, as well as adverse effects on ecosystems and wildlife.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ground-level-ozone">Ground-level ozone</h3>



<p>Furthermore, nitrous oxide is involved in the formation of ground-level ozone, a harmful air pollutant that can cause respiratory problems and other health issues in humans, as well as damage crops and other vegetation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The researchers,&nbsp;led by the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (<a href="https://webhost.essic.umd.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESSIC</a>),&nbsp;investigated how clouds interact with the Earth's surface,&nbsp;a phenomenon known as&nbsp;cloud-surface coupling.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This coupling influences the vertical exchange of heat and moisture between the surface and the atmosphere.&nbsp;</p>



<p>When coupling is strong,&nbsp;warm air from the surface rises,&nbsp;creating updrafts that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aerosol-formation-earths-lower-atmosphere-soas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">transport aerosols into the cloud layer</a>.&nbsp;This leads to a more homogeneous distribution of aerosols within the clouds,&nbsp;resulting in more consistent cloud droplet sizes and a stronger cooling effect on climate due to increased reflection of sunlight.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Conversely, when coupling is weak, this vertical transport is diminished, leading to an uneven distribution of aerosols within the clouds and a greater variability in cloud droplet size. </p>



<p>The variability in cloud properties introduces significant uncertainty into our understanding of how aerosols influence climate.</p>

<p>"Aerosol-cloud interaction has remained the largest source of uncertainty in understanding Earth's climate and projecting its future changes,&nbsp;especially those incurred by anthropogenic emissions such as sulfate,&nbsp;nitrate,&nbsp;and black carbon," said Zhanqing Li,&nbsp;Distinguished University Professor at <a href="https://umd.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UMD</a> and lead author of the study.</p>

<p>The Arctic, once a frozen expanse of white and blue, is undergoing a dramatic transformation. Thanks to climate change, this region is warming four times faster than the rest of the planet. As <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shrinking-arctic-ice-changing-global-climate-warm-arctic-cold-eurasia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">temperatures rise</a> and ice retreats, a surprising new phenomenon is taking center stage: a massive bloom of algae beneath the thinning ice.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-consequence-of-arctic-melting-ice">Unexpected consequence of Arctic melting ice</h2>



<p>We're all familiar with images of polar bears stranded on shrinking ice floes.&nbsp;But the impact of climate change on the Arctic Ocean goes far deeper than its most iconic inhabitants.</p>



<p>"As ice and snow gets thinner,&nbsp;more light penetrates to the bottom of sea ice.&nbsp;This changing light regime has the potential to impact the entire marine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-invasion-jellyfish-are-moving-north-in-a-warming-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecosystem</a>,&nbsp;which all begins with algae," explains Julienne Stroeve,&nbsp;a researcher from the <a href="https://umanitoba.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Manitoba</a> and the <a href="https://www.colorado.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Colorado</a>.</p>



<p>The algae form a vast,&nbsp;underwater "lawn" that thrives on the underside of the ice.&nbsp;Much like the phytoplankton that bloom in open oceans,&nbsp;these ice algae are the foundation of the Arctic food web.&nbsp;They feed zooplankton,&nbsp;which in turn nourish fish,&nbsp;seals,&nbsp;and ultimately,&nbsp;polar bears.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revelation-of-algae-blooms-in-arctic">Revelation of algae blooms in Arctic</h2>



<p>Mapping this underwater bloom has been a challenge,&nbsp;especially from space.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Unlike in the open ocean,&nbsp;we can't see the algae within sea ice from space.&nbsp;What we can do is start by estimating light availability," remarks Karley Campbell,&nbsp;a scientist at the <a href="https://en.uit.no/startsida" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tromsø</a>.</p>



<p>This is where <a href="https://www.esa.int" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESA</a>'s <a href="https://www.esa.int/Applications/Observing_the_Earth/FutureEO/CryoSat" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CryoSat satellite</a> steps in. This remarkable mission has been monitoring Earth's polar ice for 14 years, giving us one of the longest continuous records of ice thickness. </p>

<p>Now, scientists have harnessed CryoSat's data, along with information from <a href="https://sentinels.copernicus.eu/web/sentinel/copernicus/sentinel-3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Copernicus Sentinel-3</a> and <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>'s <a href="https://icesat-2.gsfc.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ICESat-2</a>, to model light penetration through the ice.</p>



<p>By combining this light data with models of snow and ice cover,&nbsp;researchers can predict where and when these algal blooms are likely to occur.&nbsp;The results are striking:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earlier-blooms">Earlier blooms</h3>



<p>The Arctic is experiencing a warming trend,&nbsp;resulting in thinner ice and earlier melting.&nbsp;This allows more sunlight to reach the ocean waters beneath the ice,&nbsp;triggering earlier algal blooms,&nbsp;especially in the southern regions where warming is more pronounced.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-snow-matters">Snow matters</h3>



<p>Snow cover acts as a barrier to sunlight. In years with heavy snowfall, the thicker snow layer prevents light from reaching the water, delaying or even suppressing algal blooms. </p>



<p>Conversely, years with less snow allow more light penetration, leading to earlier and potentially larger blooms.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-trends">Long-term trends</h3>



<p>Climate models predict a continued decline in Arctic snow cover over time. This decrease, coupled with the ongoing warming trend, suggests that algal blooms could start significantly earlier each decade. </p>



<p>Some regions may experience blooms up to 15 days earlier every ten years due to the combined effects of less snow and thinner ice.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ripple-effects-of-a-greener-arctic-due-to-algae">Ripple effects of a greener Arctic due to algae</h2>



<p>The implications of these findings are far-reaching. Changes in the timing and extent of algae blooms can disrupt the delicate balance of the Arctic ecosystem. </p>



<p>Algae exposed to more light may produce different nutrients, potentially impacting the entire food web.</p>



<p>"This unprecedented use of satellite data benefits our knowledge of the rapidly changing Arctic ecosystem," Julienne Stroeve explains. </p>



<p>"Understanding the photosynthetically active radiation that penetrates sea ice will support wider studies to understand just what is happening to life in the Arctic Ocean due to climate change."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arctic-monitoring-and-algae-growth">Arctic monitoring and algae growth</h2>



<p>The collaborative efforts of CryoSat and ICESat-2,&nbsp;along with upcoming missions like CRISTAL,&nbsp;promise to give us even deeper insights into the Arctic's changing environment.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"The rapid changes happening in the Arctic will have widespread consequences that affect all of us," notes Tommaso Parrinello,&nbsp;CryoSat's Mission Manager.</p>



<p>As we continue to monitor the Arctic's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-warming-influences-us-weather-patterns-ai-machine-learning/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">transformation</a>, one thing is clear: the once-frozen north is becoming a greener, more dynamic ecosystem. </p>



<p>The fate of this region is intertwined with our own, and understanding these changes is vital for navigating a future shaped by climate change.</p>

<p>A recent report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (<a href="https://www.fao.org/home/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FAO</a>) highlights this shift and underscores the growing importance of sustainable aquaculture in meeting the world's food needs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-is-aquaculture">What is aquaculture?</h2>



<p>Aquaculture, often referred to as fish farming, is the practice of breeding, rearing, and harvesting aquatic organisms like fish and seaweed in controlled environments.</p>

<p>Aquaculture plays a crucial role in supplementing wild fish stocks, reducing pressure on overfished populations, and contributing to global food security. It also supports livelihoods in coastal and rural areas by providing jobs and economic opportunities.</p>



<p>By producing high-quality protein with lower environmental impact compared to some land-based farming practices, aquaculture presents a promising solution to meet the increasing global demand for nutritious and sustainable seafood.</p>

<p>In 2022, aquaculture reached a significant milestone by producing 94.4 million tons of aquatic animals. This impressive output accounted for 51 percent of the total aquatic production globally.</p>



<p>Even more noteworthy is that 57 percent of this production was specifically intended for human consumption. This achievement underscores the growing importance of aquaculture in meeting the world's food needs.</p>



<p>The increase in aquaculture production is crucial as the global demand for aquatic foods continues to rise. As populations grow and dietary preferences shift towards healthier and more diverse options, the need for reliable sources of aquatic foods becomes more pressing. </p>



<p>The FAO highlights the importance of sustainable production practices in aquaculture. Ensuring that aquaculture operations are environmentally friendly and resource-efficient is vital for maintaining the health of our ecosystems. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aquaculture-and-food-security">Aquaculture and food security</h2>



<p>"Aquatic systems are increasingly recognized as vital for food and nutrition security," the report states. This sentiment was echoed by experts who recently gathered in Costa Rica to discuss ocean conservation.</p>



<p>Due to their diversity and capacity to provide ecosystem services, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/blue-foods-could-help-address-global-challenges/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aquatic food</a> systems offer a promising solution to enhance <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-food-system-must-change-if-nations-hope-to-reduce-greenhouse-gas-emissions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global food</a> security and nutrition.</p>



<p>Despite the steady production levels of wild fisheries over the past decades, aquaculture has seen a 6.6 percent increase since 2020. However, the sustainability of wild fishery resources remains a significant concern. </p>



<p>The proportion of marine stocks fished within biologically sustainable levels dropped to 62.3 percent in 2021, down from 64.6 percent in 2019. The report calls for urgent action to accelerate the conservation and rebuilding of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/without-strong-action-global-fish-stocks-could-collapse/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fishery stocks</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-investment-and-challenges">Investment and challenges</h2>



<p>With the global population projected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, significant investments are necessary to ensure adequate food, nutrition, and livelihoods. The report highlights the potential of aquaculture, particularly in Africa, where it remains largely untapped.</p>



<p>Currently, over 40 percent of the global population cannot afford a healthy diet, making the role of aquaculture even more critical. Aquatic products are among the most traded food commodities, generating a record $195 billion in 2022 - a 19 percent increase from pre-pandemic levels.</p>



<p>Despite these achievements, the sector faces significant challenges, including climate change, water scarcity, pollution, and biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-efforts-to-support-aquaculture">Global efforts to support aquaculture</h2>



<p>The report's release coincides with a meeting in San Jose, Costa Rica, where country representatives, scientists, and international experts are preparing for the third UN Ocean Conference in France in 2025. </p>



<p>United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Social Affairs, Li Junhua, emphasized the urgency of protecting the ocean, stating that it is "not an option but an imperative."</p>



<p>Costa Rica's President Rodrigo Chaves, hosting the two-day meeting, warned that failing to act would jeopardize the future of humanity. Participants are debating critical issues, including the ocean's capacity to absorb carbon dioxide, the need for sustainable fishing practices, and tackling marine pollution.</p>



<p>In conclusion, the shift from wild fisheries to aquaculture marks a pivotal moment in global food security. Sustainable aquaculture offers a viable solution to meet the growing demand for aquatic foods, but it requires significant investment and concerted global efforts to overcome the challenges posed by climate change and other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/90-percent-of-the-worlds-aquaculture-faces-substantial-risk-from-human-induced-environmental-changes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environmental</a> threats.</p>

But a remarkable study from <a href="https://www.ucr.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Riverside</a> reveals a chilling twist: smoke from the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/record-breaking-wildfire-years-are-just-getting-started/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildfires</a> may be stoking the very conditions that feed their growth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildfire-smoke-signals">Wildfire smoke signals</h2>



<p>We've all seen the towering plumes of smoke rising from wildfires, but these aren't just a sign of destruction. They're a key factor in a dangerous feedback loop.</p>



<p>"Fires emit <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfire-smoke-has-affected-almost-every-lake-in-north-america/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">smoke</a> with black carbon, or soot. Since it is very dark, the soot absorbs sunlight more readily than bright or reflective things," noted James Gomez, the lead author of the study.</p>



<p>This soot, a type of aerosol, acts like a heat-trapping blanket. It soaks up the sun's energy, raising temperatures and creating a hotter, drier environment. This, in turn, makes the perfect recipe for more fires to ignite.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vicious-cycle-in-northern-california">Vicious cycle in Northern California</h2>



<p>Northern California,&nbsp;with its abundant and dense vegetation,&nbsp;is particularly vulnerable to the self-perpetuating nature of wildfires.&nbsp;The region's landscape,&nbsp;rich in flammable plant matter,&nbsp;provides ample fuel for fires to spread and intensify.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study's findings reveal that the impact of wildfires in Northern California is amplified by an average daily temperature increase of 1 degree Celsius (33.8 degrees Fahrenheit) during active fire periods.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This heightened temperature,&nbsp;a direct consequence of the fire itself, further dries out vegetation and creates a more conducive environment for fire to propagate,&nbsp;exacerbating the already destructive nature of these events.</p>



<p>"It appears these fires are creating their own fire weather," said Gomez. This chilling statement paints a picture of wildfires fanning the flames of their own growth, creating a vicious cycle that's difficult to break.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-double-edged-sword-of-wildfire-smoke">Double-edged sword of wildfire smoke</h2>



<p>The story of aerosols in our atmosphere is a complex one. Some, like sulfate aerosols from fossil fuels, act as a shield, reflecting sunlight and cooling the environment. However, recent research suggests that efforts to improve air quality by reducing these aerosols may have an unintended consequence: an increase in wildfires.</p>



<p>On the other hand, black carbon from wildfires does the opposite. It traps heat, dries out the atmosphere, and discourages cloud formation. "What I found is that the black carbon emitted from these California wildfires is not increasing the number of clouds. It's hydrophobic," said Gomez.</p>



<p>This means fewer clouds and less rain, a dire prospect for drought-prone regions already struggling with water scarcity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-can-we-break-the-cycle">Can we break the cycle?</h2>



<p>The situation may seem grim, but there's hope. Gomez believes that mitigating CO2 emissions and implementing better land management practices can help reduce the number of large wildfires.</p>



<p>"There is a buildup of vegetation here in California. We need to allow more frequent small fires to reduce the amount of fuel available to burn," said Gomez. "With more forest management and more prescribed burns, we could have fewer giant fires. That is in our control."</p>



<p>This research isn't just a wake-up call about the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfires-in-siberia-are-a-growing-global-threat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dangers of wildfires</a>. It's a reminder that the Earth's systems are interconnected in complex ways. </p>

<p>Groundwater temperatures are one of the things affected as our planet's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-deja-vu-oceans-may-slow-down-again/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate</a> warms due to the increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-earth-energy-imbalance-temperature-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">warming</a> extends beyond what we see in the air and ocean. It influences the Earth's surface, including soil and groundwater, which absorb and store heat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-temperature-of-groundwater">Temperature of groundwater</h2>



<p>Groundwater is the water found beneath the Earth's surface, stored in the cracks and spaces in soil, sand, and rock. It is a critical source of drinking water, irrigation for agriculture, and industrial processes. </p>



<p>Groundwater comes from precipitation that infiltrates the ground, moving through the soil and rock layers until it reaches an area it can no longer penetrate, forming aquifers.</p>



<p>The temperature of groundwater is important because it influences water quality and the health of ecosystems. Warmer groundwater can increase the concentration of harmful substances like arsenic and manganese, posing health risks. It can also disrupt aquatic life, biogeochemical processes, and the thermal regimes of rivers. </p>



<p>Additionally, higher groundwater temperatures can promote the growth of pathogens in water distribution networks. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-projecting-groundwater-temperature-changes">Projecting groundwater temperature changes</h2>



<p>Understanding and managing groundwater temperature is crucial for ensuring safe drinking water, preserving ecosystems, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.</p>



<p>Recent research from the <a href="https://www.ipf.kit.edu/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing</a> and the <a href="https://www.agw.kit.edu/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute of Applied Geosciences</a> has begun to address this knowledge gap.</p>



<p>“To close this gap, we have simulated the projected changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/groundwater-depletion-is-accelerating-but-it-is-not-inevitable/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global groundwater</a> temperatures through 2100,” explained Dr. Susanne Benz.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-varying-temperatures-at-different-depths">Varying temperatures at different depths</h2>



<p>The study, which involved Dr. Kathrin Menberg and Professor Philipp Blum, provides detailed maps showing how groundwater temperatures will vary at different depths across the globe. </p>



<p>The findings indicate that areas with shallow groundwater tables or significant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-some-lakes-resist-the-heat-of-atmospheric-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmospheric warming</a> will experience the highest rates of groundwater warming.</p>



<p>The projections are based on two climate scenarios: SSP 2–4.5 and SSP 5–8.5. These scenarios represent different pathways for future socioeconomic development and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/measuring-greenhouse-gas-emissions-from-ponds-improves-climate-predictions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greenhouse gas</a> concentrations.</p>



<p>SSP 2–4.5 is a middle-range scenario, while SSP 5–8.5 represents a high-end, worst-case scenario.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-groundwater-temperatures-forecast-and-implications">Groundwater temperatures: Forecast and implications</h2>



<p>The study forecasts a significant rise in groundwater temperatures by 2100. The results suggest an increase of 2.1 degrees Celsius under SSP 2–4.5 and 3.5 degrees Celsius under SSP 5–8.5.</p>



<p>“There are already about 30 million people living in regions where the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-sea-levels-threaten-groundwater-global-cities-underground-infrastructure/">groundwater</a> exceeds the strictest drinking water guidelines for temperature. This means the water might not be safe to drink without treatment," noted Dr. Benz. By 2100, this number could swell to hundreds of millions, depending on the scenario.</p>



<p>Estimates range from 77 to 188 million people for SSP 2–4.5 and 59 to 588 million for SSP 5–8.5. The variations are due to differences in regional climate change impacts and population trends.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ecological-and-health-impacts">Ecological and health impacts</h2>



<p>Groundwater temperature is a critical factor in water quality, affecting chemical, biological, and physical processes. </p>



<p>“Rising groundwater temperatures can increase the concentrations of harmful substances like arsenic or manganese, posing health risks, especially if the groundwater is used for drinking,” said Dr. Benz.</p>



<p>Warmer groundwater also disrupts ecosystems, impacting aquatic life, biogeochemical processes, geothermal energy potential, and thermal regimes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drought-conditions-amplify-river-temperatures/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rivers</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-water-distribution-networks">Water distribution networks </h2>



<p>Increased groundwater temperatures can lead to exceeding critical thresholds in water distribution networks, potentially promoting the growth of harmful pathogens such as Legionella which presents a direct threat to human health. </p>



<p>Fish species, particularly salmon, are also at risk if their groundwater-dependent spawning grounds become too warm.</p>



<p>“Our results highlight the importance of taking action to protect groundwater and finding sustainable solutions to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change on groundwater,” said Dr. Benz.</p>

<p>As the Earth's climate warms, understanding and addressing the impacts on groundwater is crucial. This research highlights the need for proactive measures to protect this vital resource. </p>

<p>As life on Earth dramatically expanded over 500 million years ago during the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cambrian-explosion-fossil-sponges/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cambrian explosion</a>, tectonic plate activity began to significantly shape the planet, according to a recent study. The collision of these plates caused mountains to form and initiated a sequence of events that led to a mass extinction known as the “Sinsk event.” </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tectonic-activity-and-rapid-climate-change">Tectonic activity and rapid climate change</h2>



<p>These tectonic movements allowed magma to reach the surface, releasing large amounts of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere and triggering rapid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-climate-change-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a>. This catastrophic event wiped out various animal groups, such as archaeocyathids and hyoliths.</p>



<p>“It's unusual to point to a tectonic cause for an extinction event, but the evidence is compelling,” said study co-author John Goodge, a professor emeritus at the <a href="http://d.umn.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Minnesota Duluth</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sinsk-event-extinction-nbsp">Sinsk event extinction&nbsp;</h2>



<p>According to the study authors, the Sinsk event extinction was triggered by initial Ross/Delamerian supracrustal contraction along the edge of Gondwana, which caused a cascading series of geodynamic, paleoenvironmental, and biotic changes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These changes included loss of shallow marine carbonate habitats along the Gondwanan margin, tectonic transformation within the Gondwanan interior, and the extrusion of the Kalkarindji large igneous province.</p>



<p>There was also a release of large volumes of volcanic gases and rapid climate change, including incursions of marine anoxic waters and collapse of shallow marine ecosystems, noted the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-records-of-mountain-building">Records of mountain building</h2>



<p>Goodge and his colleagues discovered the connection to plate tectonics by comparing field notes from Antarctica and southern Australia. These two regions, once part of the supercontinent Gondwana near the equator, showed nearly identical records of mountain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-and-why-do-mountains-form-new-theories-for-an-age-old-mystery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">building</a> just before the extinction event.</p>



<p>The research, which began in the 1990s, has recently been published in the journal <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adl3452" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Science Advances</em></a>. Goodge and other scientists set up camps on a glacier in Antarctica, traveling by helicopter and snowmobile to the Holyoake Range. </p>



<p>The experts examined fossils from carbonate reef structures to trace the timeline of the extinction. A separate team found similar evidence in Australia in 2011.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-series-of-cascading-events">A series of cascading events</h2>



<p>“You never know when something you did decades ago is going to come together in a new way,” Goodge said.</p>



<p>Thus, as the author concluded, tectonic movements during mountain building “caused a series of cascading environmental processes that resulted in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-sediments-predict-the-impacts-of-ocean-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean warming</a>, reduced oceanic turnover, widespread bottom-water anoxia in marginal and epicontinental seas, and, ultimately, the Sinsk extinction.”</p>

<p>Mountain building, also known as orogeny, is a complex geological process that involves the formation of mountain ranges. This phenomenon primarily results from the movement of tectonic plates, which are massive slabs of Earth's lithosphere.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-formation-of-mountain-ranges">Formation of mountain ranges</h3>

This is how many of the world's major mountain ranges, such as the Himalayas, were formed. </p>



<p>The immense pressure and heat generated during this process can also cause the rocks to undergo metamorphism, further contributing to mountain formation.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-volcanic-activity-nbsp">Volcanic activity&nbsp;</h3>



<p>Another mechanism of mountain building is volcanic activity. When magma from the Earth's mantle rises to the surface, it can build up layers of lava and ash, creating volcanic mountains.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Andes in South America are a prime example of mountains formed by the subduction of an oceanic plate beneath a continental plate, leading to significant volcanic activity.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dynamic-mountain-ranges-nbsp">Dynamic mountain ranges&nbsp;</h3>



<p>Erosion and weathering also play a crucial role in shaping mountains. Over time, these forces can wear down the peaks and ridges, redistributing the material to form valleys and other features.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Remember the 1980s when acid rain dominated headlines? Dire warnings about rain eating buildings, killing fish, and destroying forests filled every news cycle. Then, almost like magic, acid rain vanished from public discourse. What happened? Did we actually solve one of the late 20th century's most pressing environmental challenges?</p>



<p>The answer might surprise you. Unlike many environmental issues that drag on indefinitely, acid rain represents one of modern history's most successful ecological recovery stories. It's a tale of science, politics, and technology working together to tackle what seemed impossible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The science behind it</strong></h2>



<p>Think of acid rain as nature's chemistry experiment gone wrong. These compounds react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. When mixed with water vapor in clouds, they create precipitation with dangerously low pH levels.</p>



<p>While clean rain has a pH of about 5.6, acid rain could drop as low as 4.2 to 4.4 – roughly as acidic as tomato juice or coffee. According to US Geological Survey documentation, Scottish chemist Angus Smith first coined "acid rain" in 1872, but it didn't become a household phrase until the 1960s and 1970s when Swedish scientist Svante Odén documented its devastating effects on Scandinavian lakes and European forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The crisis at its peak</strong></h2>



<p>During the height of public concern, environmental damage was both widespread and visible. This wasn't some abstract future threat – people could see destruction happening in real-time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Environmental devastation</strong></h2>



<p>The most dramatic impacts were impossible to ignore. Research documented by the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation shows that in the Adirondack Mountains, more than 200 lakes became so acidic they couldn't support fish life. The Adirondack Council reports that 409 lakes once supported brook trout, but many lost their fish populations due to acid rain.</p>



<p>By 1976, when scientists cataloged all acidified lakes in the Adirondack Park, researchers found that half of the lakes over 2,000 feet above sea level had no fish, according to studies published in environmental journals. The acidification process worked like a slow-motion disaster. As acid rain fell into watersheds, it gradually lowered pH levels. Fish couldn't survive in acidic water, and their food sources died off too.</p>



<p>Trees at high elevations showed stress directly linked to acid rain. It weakened them by leaching nutrients and making them susceptible to disease. Historical records show Germany's Black Forest saw nearly half its trees damaged by the mid-1980s.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Economic impact</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain wasn't just environmental – it was expensive. Acidic precipitation corroded infrastructure, buildings, and monuments. Historic stone structures deteriorated at accelerated rates. Tourism suffered as lakes became fishless and forests declined. EPA economic analyses from the period documented repair costs mounting into billions annually.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The solution: government action and technology</strong></h2>



<p>Transformation from crisis to success required unprecedented cooperation between governments, industries, and environmental groups.</p>

<p>A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. </p>



<p>Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. </p>



<p>Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. </p>



<p>Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. </p>



<p>The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.</p>



<p>Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.</p>



<p>Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.</p>



<p>This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. </p>



<p>The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.</p>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>

<p>“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. </p>



<p>The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.</p>



<p>“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”</p>



<p>The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.</p>

In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. </p>



<p>"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."</p>



<p>"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.</p>



<p>"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”</p>

<p>ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. </p>

<p>"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.</p>

Wetlands are a major source of methane emissions

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.</p>



<p>In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.</p>



<p>The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.</p>



<p>The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.</p>



<p>The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. </p>



<p>Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.</p>

The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.</p>



<p>“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”</p>



<p>The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.</p>



<p>The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.</p>



<p>“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.</p>

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

<p>"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.</p>



<p>"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."</p>



<p>"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."</p>



<p>According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.</p>



<p>"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.</p>



<p>Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.</p>



<p>In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.</p>



<p>Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. </p>



<p>According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.</p>



<p>"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.</p>



<p>"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."</p>



<p>Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.</p>



<p>The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.</p>



<p>"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.</p>



<p>"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."</p>
