<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-links-flavor-and-smell">How the brain links flavor and smell</h2>



<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-flavor-and-smell-matter">Why flavor and smell matter</h2>



<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>



<p>This suggests that our flavor experiences are dynamic, adapting with exposure, context, and internal states such as hunger, mood, or attention. </p>



<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-affect-health">How flavor and smell affect health</h2>



<p>This research reframes flavor as a deeply integrated brain process. Smell and taste are not separate streams but overlapping codes that can trick the brain into tasting without tasting.</p>



<p>Beyond solving everyday mysteries like sweet-tasting flavored water, the work raises questions about cravings, overeating, and how our diets are shaped by environments filled with powerful aromas. </p>



<p>The research also suggests that everyday exposure to food-related smells in supermarkets, restaurants, offices, and even advertising spaces may influence us more than we realize.</p>



<p>These aromas may prime the brain to expect certain tastes, creating a loop where scent alone can nudge us toward food choices we might not otherwise make. </p>



<p>Over time, this subtle influence could shape eating habits, nutritional patterns, and even health outcomes, revealing how deeply our sensory world directs behavior long before conscious decisions take place.</p>

<p>When astronauts head to the moon, they will serve as the eyes, hands, and interpreters on the ground, working closely with teams of scientists on Earth.&nbsp;</p>



<p>NASA is turning to virtual reality (VR) to create high-fidelity, budget-friendly training that prepares crew members, flight controllers, and science teams for the agency’s upcoming Artemis missions on the lunar surface.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-two-worlds-colliding">Two worlds colliding </h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grow-plants-on-moon-by-2026-nasa-artemis-iii-mission/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Artemis III</a> Geology Team, led by principal investigator Brett Denevi from the <a href="https://www.jhuapl.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory</a>, participated in an Artemis III Surface Extra-Vehicular VR Mini-Simulation - referred to as a “sim” - at <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/johnson/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA’s Johnson Space Center</a> in the fall of 2024.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The sim brought together science teams and flight directors and controllers from Mission Control, who practiced running science-focused moonwalks and tested how they communicate with each other and with future astronauts.</p>



<p>“There are two worlds colliding,” said Matthew Miller, co-lead for the simulation and exploration engineer. “There is the operational world and the scientific world, and they are becoming one.”</p>



<p>NASA mission training has traditionally included field tests that can demand months or years of preparation and require large teams to orchestrate.&nbsp;</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/virtual-reality-will-unlock-mysteries-of-developmental-disorders/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Virtual reality</a> can provide a more nimble alternative, enabling faster setups to keep pace with the urgency of readying astronauts for lunar landings, all while mindful of limited time, budgets, and travel constraints.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-advantages-of-vr-for-moon-training">Advantages of VR for moon training</h2>



<p>Field training remains essential since nothing can fully replicate physically handling rocks or tackling the strenuous aspects of extravehicular activities, but VR offers specific advantages.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Artemis III VR Mini-Sim used authentic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-earth-get-its-moon-a-new-theory-has-emerged/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lunar surface</a> data from one of the Artemis III candidate sites, allowing the science team to concentrate on mission objectives and traverse planning directly applicable to the moon.</p>



<p>Eddie Paddock, engineering VR technical discipline lead at NASA Johnson, and his team relied on data from <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/lro/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter</a> and on planetary positions over time to build a virtual software environment replicating a site within the Nobile Rim 1 region near the lunar south pole.</p>



<p>In the <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/general/prototype-immersive-technologies-lab/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Prototype Immersive Technology lab</a> at Johnson, two stand-in crew members donned VR headsets, performed simulated moonwalk traverses, and streamed suit-mounted virtual camera footage and audio to another location, where flight controllers and science teams mimicked real-time ground communications.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-training-for-the-moon">Training for the moon</h2>



<p>Working across such different perspectives, the flight operations team and the science team are refining how they operate together.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The flight control team’s priority is keeping crew and spacecraft safe while minimizing risk, whereas the science team, as Miller noted, is “relentlessly thirsty” for as much information as possible. Simulations of this kind ensure these two sides have ample practice blending their goals and procedures.</p>



<p>Denevi described the flight control team as a “well-oiled machine,” emphasizing how committed they are to assisting the science team. Many flight controllers have immersed themselves in geology fieldwork and classes to gain a deeper understanding of the Artemis science objectives.</p>



<p>“They have invested a lot of their own effort into understanding the science background and science objectives, and the science team really appreciates that and wants to make sure they are also learning to operate in the best way we can to support the flight control team, because there’s a lot for us to learn as well,” Denevi said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It’s a joy to get to share the science with them and have them be excited to help us implement it all.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-moon-exploration">Future moon exploration </h2>



<p>This simulation is merely the beginning for VR in Artemis preparations. Going forward, mixed reality could give crew members a more immersive environment where they can handle genuine objects in conjunction with VR-based scenes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Now that the Nobile Rim 1 landing site model exists in VR, NASA can enhance it for continuous crew training - something not easily replicated in terrestrial field trials.</p>



<p>While the word “virtual” shows up in the project title, the lessons learned are significant.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We are uncovering a lot of things that people probably had in the back of their head as something we’d need to deal with in the future,” Miller said. “But guess what? The future is now. This is now.”</p>



<p>As NASA moves closer to sending astronauts back to the moon through Artemis, VR-based training looks set to play a central role in preparing flight and science teams for the demanding but rewarding work of studying the lunar environment - and laying the groundwork for humanity’s next step into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-details-on-wow-signal-transmitted-from-deep-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deep space</a> exploration.</p>

<p>Rock formations can appear to be static, silent observers of the passage of time. But under their apparently immovable form, they are in a state of constant change, molded by immense natural forces.</p>



<p>Mountains form over millions of years, as tectonic plates crush into each other. Glaciers, persistent rain, and constant winds, on the other hand, slowly erode the mountains away.</p>



<p>These forces shape the landscapes we observe today, but there is one often-forgotten factor that is important in this process: the rock's strength.</p>



<p>To learn more about this aspect of landscape evolution, scientists from the <a href="https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Toronto Mississauga</a> undertook a detailed investigation of rock strengths and how these affect erosion rates.</p>



<p>Their work, which appeared recently in <em>Science Advances</em>, uncovered a surprising revelation - rock type alone can result in a whopping 20-fold contrast in erosion rates. </p>



<p>This is something that has been underappreciated in past geological models.</p>



<p>The researchers centered on a 200-kilometer section of the southeastern coast of Brazil, an area with a stable climate and little tectonic activity, which made it a perfect natural lab.</p>



<p>By separating rock strength from the other factors, they obtained new knowledge about how landscapes change through time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-measuring-erosion-and-rock-strength">Measuring erosion and rock strength</h2>



<p>To determine how quickly different types of rock erode, the scientists took a multi-faceted approach, analyzing both <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soil-erosion-rates-have-exploded-in-the-midwestern-us/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">erosion rates</a> and the physical properties of the rocks themselves.</p>



<p>They studied river sediments to track landscape changes over time, and provided a clearer picture of long-term geological transformations.</p>



<p>A key part of their research involved measuring the concentration of beryllium-10, a rare radioactive isotope that forms when cosmic rays strike Earth’s surface. </p>



<p>This isotope acts as a natural geological clock - similar to how tree rings reveal a tree’s age - which allows scientists to estimate how long a rock has been exposed to erosion.</p>



<p>The more beryllium-10 present, the longer the rock has remained at the surface.</p>



<p>The team also used a specialized tool called a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tool-flint-discovery-challenges-theory-of-human-cultural-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Schmidt hammer</a> to measure rock strength. This device works by striking the rock with a spring-loaded mass and recording the force of its rebound. </p>



<p>Stronger rocks produce a higher rebound, much like a basketball bouncing higher on a hard court than on soft grass. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-rock-type-in-erosion">Role of rock type in erosion</h2>



<p>"The hypothesis is that, if rock strength matters, we ought to see a correlation between rock strength and erosion rates," explained Lindsay Schoenbohm, a professor of Earth sciences at the University of Toronto Mississauga, and the study’s lead researcher.</p>



<p>"Harder rocks should equal slower erosion rates," she noted.</p>



<p>The study confirmed this pattern, showing that rock type plays a crucial role in shaping landscapes. Softer rocks erode quickly, influencing the formation of valleys, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-activities-threaten-rivers-far-more-than-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">river systems</a>, and even mountain structures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-database-named-thor">Database named "Thor"</h2>



<p>To make their findings widely accessible, the researchers compiled their rock strength data into a publicly available database, nicknamed "Thor."</p>



<p>Launched in December, this resource offers valuable data for scientists studying climate, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plate-tectonics-active-beginning/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tectonics</a>, and landscape evolution.</p>



<p>"We created it for people like us, initially - people who are looking at erosion rates in landscapes," one scientist noted. "But I think the applications could be extremely broad."</p>



<p>By emphasizing the role of rock strength in shaping landscapes, this research lays the foundation for future studies. </p>



<p>Scientists can now better predict how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/animals-secretly-reshape-landscapes-in-powerful-ways/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">landscapes</a> will evolve by factoring in not only external forces like climate and tectonics but also the physical properties of the rocks themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rock-strength-and-land-management">Rock strength and land management</h2>



<p>Understanding how rock strength influences erosion isn’t just about reconstructing the past - it has real-world implications for the future.</p>



<p>As climate change accelerates weathering processes, areas with softer rocks may undergo more rapid landscape transformations, increasing sediment flow into rivers and coastal ecosystems. </p>



<p>This, in turn, can affect water quality, agriculture, and infrastructure stability.</p>



<p>The findings could also help guide land management and conservation efforts. By identifying regions with highly erodible rock types, policymakers can develop strategies to prevent excessive soil loss and protect ecosystems. </p>



<p>The Thor database offers a valuable tool for scientists and environmental planners to anticipate landscape changes and make informed decisions about land use and conservation.</p>



<p>With these insights, researchers are not only refining our understanding of Earth’s ever-changing landscapes but also offering practical solutions for managing and protecting them.</p>

<p>In a twist that sounds like science fiction, researchers have modified mouse DNA to include traits that were once found in the extinct woolly mammoth. The technology harnesses molecular tools to snip and rearrange DNA inside living cells.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tweaking-the-genes">Tweaking the genes</h2>



<p>To make the mice woolly, the researchers analyzed ancient mammoth genomes alongside elephant DNA. They disabled certain genes tied to hair texture, color, and heat regulation.</p>



<p>They also introduced a unique mutation found in woolly mammoths to see if it would produce thick fur. The resulting offspring exhibited curly coats that surprised many observers.</p>

They question whether any environment could truly accommodate the needs of species that disappeared thousands of years ago.</p>

<p>Even if these genetic tweaks scale up, an elephant’s <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/facts/african-elephant" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gestation</a> lasts nearly two years, which complicates experiments. The size of the mother and the specialized procedures that are required add another layer of difficulty.</p>



<p>Some scientists also worry about how herds of woolly-elephant hybrids might affect fragile ecosystems. These delicate networks of living organisms can be disrupted in ways that are hard to predict.</p>

<p>Researchers have identified a galaxy that existed when the universe was less than 300 million years old. </p>



<p>This galaxy, known as <a href="https://webbtelescope.org/contents/media/images/01HZ083EXXCJNE64ERAH2ER2FM" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JADES-GS-z14-0</a>, is not only distant but also surprisingly mature. It defies our expectations about how galaxies formed in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/andromeda-galaxy-shows-signs-of-violent-past-collisions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early universe</a>.</p>



<p>NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (<a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/webb/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JWST</a>) observed the galaxy, and revealed its unexpected complexity. The research builds on a 2024 discovery that identified JADES-GS-z14-0 as the most distant known galaxy.</p>



<p>The new study focuses on the galaxy's chemical composition and growth, and offers fresh insights into what occurred during the universe’s first chapter.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-unexpected-galaxy-discovery">An unexpected galaxy discovery </h2>



<p>The findings come from the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (<a href="https://webbtelescope.org/contents/media/images/01GKT0RRJBP5ZMJRMCQNPT8SXP" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JADES</a>), a program designed to study distant galaxies. While astronomers expected to locate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/first-high-def-image-of-the-cosmic-web-filaments-shows-hidden-universal-highways/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">faraway objects</a>, this galaxy stood out in surprising ways.</p>



<p>"This wasn't simply stumbling upon something unexpected," said Kevin Hainline, an associate research professor at the University of Arizona’s <a href="https://astro.arizona.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Steward Observatory</a>.</p>



<p>"The survey was deliberately designed to find distant galaxies, but this one broke the team's records in ways they didn't anticipate - it was intrinsically bright and had a complex chemical composition that was totally unexpected so early in the universe's history."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-galaxies-hidden-in-the-early-universe">Galaxies hidden in the early universe </h2>



<p>The galaxy’s brightness and extended structure challenge previous assumptions. "It's not just a tiny little nugget. It's bright and fairly extended for the age of the universe when we observed it," Hainline said.</p>



<p>The discovery of JADES-GS-z14-0 suggests that similar galaxies may be more common than previously believed.</p>



<p>"The fact that we found this galaxy in a tiny region of the sky means that there should be more of these out there," said lead study author Jakob Helton, a graduate researcher at Steward Observatory. </p>



<p>"If we looked at the whole sky, which we can't do with JWST, we would eventually find more of these extreme objects."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mature-chemical-composition">Mature chemical composition</h2>



<p>The team used multiple instruments aboard JWST, including the Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). These tools helped identify substantial amounts of oxygen present in the galaxy - an unexpected finding for a galaxy from such an early <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/largest-structure-in-universe-is-1-4-billion-light-years-long-quipu-superstructure/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmic era</a>.</p>



<p>In astronomy, elements heavier than helium are considered metals. These metals form over multiple generations of stars, making their presence in JADES-GS-z14-0 surprising. </p>



<p>The early universe contained only hydrogen, helium, and traces of lithium. The discovery of oxygen suggests the galaxy had been forming stars for around 100 million years before its observation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-long-history-of-star-formation">A long history of star formation</h2>



<p>To create oxygen, the galaxy must have gone through several cycles of star birth and death.</p>



<p>"To make oxygen, the galaxy must have started out very early on, because it would have had to form a generation of stars," said George Rieke, Regents Professor of Astronomy and the study’s senior author. </p>



<p>"Those stars must have evolved and exploded as supernovae to release oxygen into interstellar <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/is-the-universe-spinning-strange-galaxy-motion-suggests-that-it-is/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">space</a>, from which new stars would form and evolve."</p>



<p>This process indicates that galaxies may have started forming earlier than previously believed, shifting the timeline for the first structures in the universe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-rare-and-fortunate-observation">A rare and fortunate observation</h2>



<p>Observing JADES-GS-z14-0 required nine days of telescope time, with 167 hours of NIRCam imaging and 43 hours of MIRI imaging. The team focused on a tiny region of the sky, and the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/colliding-galaxy-clusters-stir-up-hot-sloshing-gas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxy</a> happened to be in just the right spot for MIRI to detect.</p>



<p>"The <a href="https://www.arizona.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U of A</a> astronomers were lucky that this galaxy happened to sit in the perfect spot for them to observe with MIRI," Helton said. "If they had pointed the telescope just a fraction of a degree in any direction, they would have missed getting this crucial mid-infrared data."</p>



<p>To explain the scale of the observation, Helton provided an analogy: "Imagine a grain of sand at the end of your arm. You see how large it is on the sky - that's how large we looked at."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-refining-models-of-galaxy-formation">Refining models of galaxy formation</h2>



<p>The existence of such a mature galaxy so early in cosmic history provides a valuable test for theories of how <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/the-brilliant-sombrero-galaxy-hints-at-an-expanding-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies</a> form and evolve.</p>



<p>"Our involvement here is a product of the U of A leading in infrared astronomy since the mid-'60s, when it first started. We had the first major infrared astronomy group over in the Lunar and Planetary lab, with Gerard Kuiper, Frank Low and Harold Johnson," Rieke said.</p>



<p>These observations allow astronomers to refine their models of galaxy formation, and improve their understanding of how the universe transitioned from its initial elements to the complex chemistry that supports life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-era-of-galaxy-discovery">New era of galaxy discovery</h2>



<p>The discovery of JADES-GS-z14-0 represents a major step forward in understanding the universe’s infancy. With new technology like JWST, astronomers can explore <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/water-might-have-formed-long-before-galaxies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies</a> that were previously out of reach.</p>



<p>"We're in an incredible time in astronomy history," said Hainline. "We're able to understand galaxies that are well beyond anything humans have ever found, and see them in many different ways and really understand them. That's really magic."</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <em><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41550-025-02503-z" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature Astronomy</a>.</em></p>

Galaxy found in the early universe that shouldn’t exist

Researchers have identified a galaxy that existed when the universe...

<p>A team of aerospace engineers has recently discovered that climate change is altering conditions in near-Earth space. Over time, these shifts could limit the number of satellites that can reliably operate in Earth’s orbit.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Led by <a href="https://www.mit.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MIT</a>, the new study indicates that emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are causing the upper atmosphere to contract, reducing drag on older satellites and debris - and thereby threatening to make space more crowded and prone to collisions.</p>



<p>“Our behavior with greenhouse gases here on Earth over the past 100 years is having an effect on how we operate satellites over the next 100 years,” said study author Richard Linares, an associate professor in MIT’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AeroAstro).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-satellites-highways-are-closing">Satellites highways are closing</h2>



<p>The researchers examined the thermosphere, an important atmospheric layer where the International Space Station and the majority of satellites operate. The thermosphere naturally shrinks and expands over an 11-year solar cycle, influenced by the sun’s output.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, the MIT team found that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/2023-climate-change-report-record-high-temperatures-greenhouse-gases-sea-level-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greenhouse gases</a> intensify the layer’s contraction, causing densities to drop at high altitudes. As a result, orbiting objects experience less drag, enabling defunct satellites and debris to remain in orbit longer than they otherwise would.</p>



<p>“The upper atmosphere is in a fragile state as climate change disrupts the status quo,” said lead author William Parker, a graduate student at AeroAstro.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“At the same time, there’s been a massive increase in the number of satellites launched, especially for delivering broadband internet from space. If we don’t manage this activity carefully and work to reduce our emissions, space could become too crowded, leading to more collisions and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/space-debris-may-create-a-future-with-no-internet-or-astronaut-missions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">debris</a>.”</p>



<p>According to the team’s simulations, these effects could reduce the “carrying capacity” of certain altitudes for satellites by 50 to 66 percent by the year 2100, meaning the environment can sustain significantly fewer satellites without triggering a surge in collisions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-outdated-satellites">The future of outdated satellites </h2>



<p>When higher atmospheric layers remain dense enough, objects that reach the end of their operational life slowly lose altitude and burn up upon reentry. This self-cleaning mechanism helps clear old satellites and debris.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, if drag decreases due to a contracted thermosphere, outdated spacecraft remain aloft for decades, congesting key orbital paths. Thus, less drag means extended lifetimes for space junk, which will litter various regions for decades, increasing the potential for collisions in orbit.</p>



<p>To arrive at this conclusion, the researchers created models of how carbon emissions affect the thermosphere and influence orbital behavior.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They then used these models to estimate the “satellite carrying capacity” of low-Earth orbit - a concept borrowed from ecology, referring to the maximum population an ecosystem (or, in this case, a region of space) can support without detrimental outcomes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-many-satellites-can-safely-coexist">How many satellites can safely coexist?</h2>



<p>The study involved simulating possible future greenhouse gas emissions in order to see how atmospheric density could evolve. They tested various scenarios of continued emissions growth, as well as one in which the emissions stayed at their level from the year 2000.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Next, they factored in known orbital dynamics and possible collisions to figure out how many satellites at different altitudes could safely coexist before collisions and debris would spiral out of control.</p>



<p>By 2100, the number of satellites safely accommodated within the altitudes of 200 and 1,000 kilometers might be reduced by 50 to 66% compared with a scenario in which emissions remain at year-2000 levels.&nbsp;</p>



<p>If space operators exceed this capacity at a given altitude, the experts warn of a “runaway instability,” in which one collision creates enough shards of debris that future collisions become much more likely.</p>



<p>Even in a local region, we seem to be close to approaching this capacity value today since thousands of new satellites now populate low-Earth orbit, especially from so-called megaconstellations like SpaceX’s Starlink, which provides satellite-based internet.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-shifting-debris-environment">A shifting debris environment </h2>



<p>Nowadays, there are more than 10,000 satellites in low-Earth orbit and we rely on the atmosphere to clean up the debris. But if the atmosphere is changing, the debris environment will also change.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These satellites deliver vital services . communication, internet, weather data, navigation - but their population growth forces many to perform regular collision-avoidance maneuvers.</p>



<p>If the atmosphere keeps thinning at key orbits, older and no-longer-functional craft won’t reenter and disintegrate as rapidly as they used to. As a result, defunct satellites, boosters, and other pieces of debris could float indefinitely, becoming a hazard to newer missions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A single collision in one orbital shell can generate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/future-space-exploration-could-be-shut-down-by-orbiting-debris/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">debris</a> that may remain in orbit for decades or centuries, triggering subsequent collisions.</p>



<p>“We show the long-term outlook on orbital debris is critically dependent on curbing our greenhouse gas emissions,” Parker said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-consequences-of-global-warming">Consequences of global warming </h2>



<p>In the midst of rapid satellite deployments, these results underline the need for improved space-traffic management and collision-avoidance protocols to keep orbits safe.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The simulations also provide compelling motivation for reducing greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The megaconstellation is a new trend and we’re showing that because of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-earth-energy-imbalance-temperature-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a>, we’re going to have a reduced capacity in orbit,” Linares explained.</p>



<p>By examining the intersection of climate and orbital dynamics, the researchers have uncovered one more factor that highlights the far-reaching consequences of global warming.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Our behavior with greenhouse gases here on Earth over the past 100 years is having an effect on how we operate satellites over the next 100 years,” Linares concluded.</p>

Climate change is shrinking Earth’s atmosphere - and that’s bad for satellites

<p>Whales are not just big - they’re important contributors to healthy oceans. When they poop, they move nutrients from deep water to the surface, benefiting organisms in the marine food web.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Now, new research has shown that whales also ferry substantial quantities of nutrients for thousands of miles in their urine and other bodily outputs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-delivering-nutrients-across-the-ocean">Delivering nutrients across the ocean</h2>



<p>In 2010, experts revealed that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/whale-poop-is-a-natural-fertilizer-that-keeps-the-ocean-alive/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">whales</a>, feeding at depth and pooping at the surface, offer a critical resource for plankton growth and ocean productivity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The latest study, led by the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, has found that whales transport abundant nutrients horizontally across entire ocean basins.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These nutrients typically travel from rich, cold waters where whales feed to warm equatorial regions where they mate and give birth, delivered in large part by their urine - though sloughed skin, calf feces, carcasses, and placentas also play a part.</p>



<p>“These coastal areas often have clear waters, a sign of low <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nitrogen-was-plentiful-for-early-life-on-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nitrogen</a>, and many have coral reef ecosystems,” said Joe Roman, a biologist at the University of Vermont, who co-led the research.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The movement of nitrogen and other nutrients can be important to the growth of phytoplankton, or microscopic algae, and provide food for sharks and other fish and many invertebrates.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-long-distance-nutrient-pipeline">A long-distance nutrient pipeline</h2>



<p>The researchers found that in oceans worldwide, great whales - including right whales, gray whales, and humpbacks - carry around 4,000 tons of nitrogen each year into coastal zones in the tropics and subtropics.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They also deliver more than 45,000 tons of biomass. Before commercial whaling decimated whale populations, this offshore-to-inshore “nutrient pipeline” could have been three or more times larger.</p>



<p>For instance, scientists estimate that thousands of humpback whales migrate annually from a vast foraging region in the Gulf of Alaska to a smaller breeding area in Hawaii.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team shows that the nutrient inputs - tons of excretions, skin, and carcasses - provided by whales in the <a href="https://hawaiihumpbackwhale.noaa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary</a> are about double the amount brought in by local oceanic processes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-whale-conveyer-belt">The whale conveyer belt</h2>



<p>“We call it the ‘great whale conveyor belt,’ or it can also be thought of as a funnel because whales feed over large areas, but they need to be in a relatively confined space to find a mate, breed, and give birth. At first, the calves don’t have the energy to travel long distances like the moms can,” Roman explained.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Another factor is that the whales likely remain in shallow, sandy waters to muffle their calls. “Moms and newborns are calling all the time, staying in communication,” he added. “And they don’t want predators, like killer whales, or breeding humpback males, to pick up on that.”</p>



<p>Therefore, nutrients that are widely dispersed over feeding zones become concentrated in limited tropical and subtropical habitats, “like collecting leaves to make compost for your garden,” as Roman put it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-large-animals-massive-migrations">Large animals, massive migrations</h2>



<p>During summer, fully grown whales gorge on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-satellites-track-antarctic-krill-are-these-tiny-ocean-shrimp-in-danger/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">krill</a>, herring, and other prey in high-latitude waters near Alaska, Iceland, and Antarctica. Recent studies indicate that North Pacific humpback whales can gain about 30 pounds daily in spring, summer, and fall.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This substantial fat build-up supports an incredible <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/noise-pollution-is-increasingly-disrupting-whale-migration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">migration</a>: baleen whales routinely travel thousands of miles to tropical breeding grounds without eating. Gray whales, for example, make a nearly 7,000-mile journey between feeding grounds off Russia and calving sites along Baja California. </p>



<p>Meanwhile, some humpback whales in the Southern Hemisphere migrate over 5,000 miles from waters near Antarctica to areas off Costa Rica.</p>



<p>During these treks, they burn off hundreds of pounds a day and excrete substantial amounts of nitrogen-rich urea. One Icelandic study found that feeding fin whales can release more than 250 gallons of urine daily, while humans typically excrete less than half a gallon.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-living-life-on-a-different-scale-nbsp">Living life on a different scale&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Whales have the longest migrations of any mammal and are outsized creatures in every sense.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Because of their size, whales are able to do things that no other animal does. They’re living life on a different scale,” said co-author Andrew Pershing, an oceanographer at the nonprofit organization Climate Central.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Nutrients are coming in from outside - and not from a river, but by these migrating animals. It’s super-cool, and changes how we think about ecosystems in the ocean. We don’t think of animals other than humans having an impact on a planetary scale, but the whales really do.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-circulatory-system-of-the-planet-nbsp">Circulatory system of the planet&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Prior to commercial whaling that started in the 1800s, nutrient transfers would likely have been much larger, Pershing argued. He noted that researchers do not yet fully understand inputs from blue whales - the largest animals on Earth - which were heavily hunted in the twentieth century. </p>



<p>“There’s basic things that we don’t know about them, like where their breeding areas are,” said Pershing, noting that humpback populations are recovering in some places, but blue whale numbers remain severely diminished.</p>



<p>“Lots of people think of plants as the lungs of the planet, taking in carbon dioxide and expelling oxygen. For their part, animals play an important role in moving nutrients,” said Roman.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Seabirds transport nitrogen and phosphorus from the ocean to the land in their poop, increasing the density of plants on islands. Animals form the circulatory system of the planet - and whales are the extreme example.”</p>

Whales transport nutrients across entire ocean basins in their urine

<p>For years, red wine has been romanticized as the “healthy” alcohol. Some credit its deep ruby hue and rich antioxidants with protective effects - particularly against cancer.</p>



<p>The main reason? <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/resveratrol-may-boost-female-fertility-naturally/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Resveratrol</a>. This plant compound, found in grape skins, has been linked to anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Many have assumed that a glass of red is safer than other forms of alcohol.</p>



<p>But, new research from Brown University suggests otherwise. A comprehensive meta-analysis examined the effects of both red and white wine on cancer risk. The results? No special protection from red wine. Even more surprising - white wine may actually increase the risk of skin cancer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-red-wine-vs-white-wine">Red wine vs. white wine</h2>



<p>“We conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis to assess whether red wine is truly a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-polyphenols-promote-heart-health-youthful-skin-and-a-healthy-waistline/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">healthier choice</a> than white wine,” Cho said. </p>



<p>“Our analysis included as many published epidemiological studies as possible that separately explored the relationship between red and white wine consumption and cancer risk. The results revealed no significant difference in cancer risk between red and white wine overall."</p>



<p>“However, we did observe a distinction when it came to skin cancer risk. Specifically, the consumption of white wine, but not red wine, was associated with an increased risk of skin cancer.”</p>



<p>The research included 42 studies and nearly 96,000 participants. Red and white wine showed no major differences in overall cancer risk. But white wine? It stood out. According to the findings, those who drank white wine had a 22% higher risk of developing skin cancer compared to red wine drinkers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-white-wine-might-increase-cancer-risk">White wine might increase cancer risk</h2>



<p>Scientists are still piecing the puzzle together. One possible explanation lies in acetaldehyde - a byproduct of alcohol metabolism.</p>



<p>This compound can damage DNA, increasing the likelihood of cancerous mutations. White wine might contain higher levels of acetaldehyde than red <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/healing-chronic-wounds-with-gold-and-red-wine/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wine</a>, making it a bigger threat.</p>



<p>There are also lifestyle habits to consider. People who drink wine may be more likely to spend time outdoors - whether at vineyards, rooftop brunches, or beachside gatherings. Sun exposure, combined with alcohol’s potential to impair DNA repair, could make skin cancer more likely.</p>



<p>The connection isn’t fully understood, but the evidence showed that white wine drinkers had a greater risk of skin cancer compared to those who preferred red wine.</p>

<p>For years, red wine has been hyped as a heart-healthy, disease-fighting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alcohol-and-depression-study-challenges-self-medication-theory/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">beverage</a>. Much of this reputation comes from resveratrol. </p>



<p>In lab studies, resveratrol has shown promising anti-cancer effects - slowing tumor growth, reducing inflammation, and even interfering with cancer cell reproduction.</p>



<p>So why doesn’t red wine protect against cancer? It is likely because the amount of resveratrol in a glass of wine is too small to make a meaningful difference.</p>



<p>Research suggests that resveratrol is rapidly metabolized in the body, preventing it from reaching levels high enough to be truly beneficial. Ultimately, the idea of red wine as a cancer shield doesn’t hold up when put to the test.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-bigger-picture-alcohol-and-cancer">The bigger picture: Alcohol and cancer</h2>



<p>Beyond the red vs. white debate, one fact remains clear - alcohol itself is a known carcinogen. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies it as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning there is strong evidence that it contributes to cancer.</p>



<p>Alcohol metabolizes into acetaldehyde, a toxic substance that can damage DNA and prevent cells from repairing themselves. In 2020 alone, alcohol consumption was linked to over 740,000 cancer cases worldwide. It plays a role in cancers of the mouth, throat, liver, colon, breast, and esophagus.</p>



<p>This means that while some alcoholic drinks may be worse than others, none are completely risk-free.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-this-means-for-the-future">What this means for the future</h2>



<p>This research adds weight to an ongoing discussion: does the type of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/semaglutide-shows-promise-in-reducing-alcohol-cravings/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">alcohol</a> you drink matter? </p>



<p>While red and white wine appear to have similar overall risks, the strong link between white wine and skin cancer - especially in women - raises serious concerns.</p>



<p>Future studies will need to investigate why white wine has this specific impact. </p>



<p>Is it due to a particular chemical compound? Drinking habits? A combination of factors? Until scientists find clearer answers, these findings offer a reason to rethink assumptions about alcohol and health.</p>

<p>The takeaway? Moderation is key. Those who choose to drink should do so with full awareness of the risks - knowing that no type of alcohol is truly safe when it comes to cancer. </p>



<p>Red wine might not be the protective elixir some had hoped for, and white wine may come with its own unique dangers.</p>



<p>At the end of the day, the choice is personal. But it’s always better to make that choice informed.</p>

For years, red wine has been romanticized as the “healthy”...

<p>Millions of lives are lost each year as a result of smoking's negative effects, but a new study has discovered another hidden danger in cigarette smoke and discarded cigarette waste.</p>



<p>Researchers at the <a href="https://tu-dresden.de/?set_language=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Dresden</a> (TUD) have found that harmful compounds in cigarettes greatly increase the development and dissemination of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics, both in the environment and in the lungs of smokers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-dangers-of-cigarette-waste">Hidden dangers of cigarette waste</h2>



<p>“Cigarette filters contain many of the&nbsp;toxic substances&nbsp;found in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cigarette-smoke-exposure-elevates-cancer-risk-in-dogs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cigarette smoke</a>,” explained Dr. Uli Klümper from the Institute of Hydrobiology at the TUD.</p>



<p>“In our study, we found that when these filters end up in waterbodies, they are increasingly colonized by potentially pathogenic bugs and bacteria displaying&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antibiotic-resistance-increasing-enterococci-looming-global-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">antibiotic resistance</a>, as these are particularly well adapted to the adverse conditions on the filters.”</p>



<p>The research group found that cigarette waste not only pollutes the environment but also poses significant public health risks. </p>



<p>As these discarded cigarette butts sit in lakes, rivers, and oceans, resistant bacteria multiply rapidly on them.</p>



<p>This could result in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antibiotics-for-childhood-infections-are-becoming-ineffective/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">infections</a> that are more difficult to treat, which poses an additional public health concern that had previously gone largely unnoticed.</p>



<p>“This underlines the need for stricter measures against the careless discarding of cigarette butts, and highlights another hidden health hazard caused by smoking,” said Dr. Klümper.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cigarette-waste-and-microbial-communities">Cigarette waste and microbial communities </h2>



<p>There are many complex ways in which cigarette waste interacts with microbial ecosystems, influencing their balance and behavior. </p>



<p>Cigarette butts, often discarded without a second thought, create a toxic microenvironment that selects for the survival of the most resilient bacteria. </p>



<p>These bacteria, many of which already possess antibiotic resistance, thrive in polluted water bodies and form dense biofilms on cigarette filters.</p>



<p>Biofilms are communities of microbes, including bacteria, that adhere to surfaces and transfer genetic material more effectively than planktonic (drifting) bacteria.</p>



<p>The poisonous chemicals seeping from cigarette filters enhance this activity, so bacterial populations become more likely to transfer resistance genes. </p>



<p>With time, these fortified bacterial colonies can find their way into natural water systems, facilitating the spread of antibiotic-resistant infections from the environment to humans.</p>



<p>By acting as both a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predicting-the-effects-of-pollutants-on-river-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollutant</a> and an incubator for dangerous pathogens, cigarette waste is not just an eyesore but a public health hazard that demands urgent intervention.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-risk-of-severe-infections-in-smokers">Risk of severe infections in smokers</h2>



<p>Apart from the ecological consequences, the research discovered similarly worrying effects for consumers of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tobacco-bans-could-help-prevent-1-2-million-lung-cancer-deaths/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tobacco</a>.</p>



<p>Smokers inadvertently speed up the transmission of antibiotic-resistant germs in their lungs, diminishing the efficacy of antibiotic therapy at times of infection.</p>



<p>The researchers used laboratory tests that modeled conditions within the human lungs, but in artificial lung fluid. They made a striking observation: toxic substances in cigarette smoke stressed out bacteria in lung fluid.</p>



<p>Under this stress, bacteria exchanged antibiotic resistance genes at an accelerated rate, significantly increasing their spread.</p>



<p>“In our experiments with an artificial lung medium, we were able to show that the toxic substances that accumulate in the lung fluid due to&nbsp;cigarette smoke&nbsp;trigger a stress reaction in the bacteria which, among other things, more than doubles the frequency with which&nbsp;resistance genes&nbsp;are passed on between bacteria via plasmids,” explained the researchers.</p>



<p>This reaction effectively speeds up the development and spread of antibiotic-resistant infections, thus complicating medical treatments and increasing risks of severe infections.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-call-to-action">Global call to action</h2>



<p>Countless lives are lost each year from cigarette-smoking-related illnesses, but the new findings point towards an even stronger rationale for curtailing cigarette smoking without delay.</p>



<p>Reduction in cigarette waste pollution benefits communities by constraining the propagation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in water bodies.</p>



<p>Simultaneously, stopping smoking cuts exposure to harmful bacteria, enhancing health conditions overall.</p>



<p>The research highlights the need for stronger public policy and heightened public understanding regarding the threat posed by cigarette waste - an overlooked source of antibiotic resistance bacteria.</p>



<p>Ultimately, the research indicates that smoking dangers run much deeper than they appear, and threaten health in ways that need urgent attention and response.</p>

<p>We think we understand our dogs and their emotions. We see a wagging tail as happiness and whimpering as sadness, projecting our emotions onto them. This perception forms the foundation of our bond, but what if we are getting it wrong?</p>



<p>New research from Arizona State University (<a href="https://www.asu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ASU</a>) suggests that dog owners frequently misinterpret their pet’s emotions. Instead of reading a dog’s true signals, we rely on context, assuming that we know how our pets feel based on the situation rather than their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dogs-focus-more-when-humans-use-eye-contact-and-gestures/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">actual behavior</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-dog-emotions">Understanding dog emotions</h2>



<p>Communication with a dog requires patience and observation. Unlike humans, dogs do not express themselves with words. Instead, they rely on body language, facial expressions, and vocalizations. This can make emotional interpretation challenging, especially when our own biases come into play.</p>



<p>At first glance, it seems simple. You give your dog a treat, and she wags her tail before trotting away happily. You believe she is delighted, that she understands your affection, and that the two of you share a moment of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rewards-of-dog-ownership-outweigh-the-challenges/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">connection</a>. But is that what really happens?</p>



<p>According to ASU researchers Holly Molinaro and Clive Wynne, our interpretation of dog emotions often strays from reality. The study reveals that humans tend to judge a dog’s emotional state based on the surrounding situation rather than the dog’s actual behavior.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-human-bias">Impact of human bias</h2>



<p>Dogs have their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dogs-suffer-from-the-january-blues-just-like-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">own way of expressing</a> emotions, but humans frequently misunderstand these signals. This misinterpretation often occurs because we project our feelings onto them. We assume a dog feels happy or guilty because that is how we would feel in a similar situation.</p>



<p>“People do not look at what the dog is doing, instead they look at the situation surrounding the dog and base their emotional perception off of that,” said Molinaro.</p>



<p>Professor Clive Wynne, who studies dog behavior, further explained this challenge. "Our dogs are trying to communicate with us, but we humans seem determined to look at everything except the poor pooch himself."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-context-alters-emotion-perception">Context alters emotion perception</h2>



<p>To test how humans perceive dog emotions, Molinaro and Wynne conducted two experiments. They filmed dogs in various scenarios, capturing moments believed to be positive, such as receiving treats or preparing for a walk, as well as negative situations, like mild scolding or encountering a vacuum cleaner.</p>



<p>Participants watched these videos, some with full context and others with altered backgrounds. In one experiment, the researchers edited the clips so that a dog filmed in a happy setting appeared to be in a negative one, and vice versa. The goal was to see how people would judge the emotions of the dog.</p>



<p>The findings were striking. People overwhelmingly relied on situational cues rather than the dog’s actual behavior to determine its emotional state.</p>



<p>“You see a dog getting a treat, you assume he must be feeling good. You see a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-affectionate-dog-breeds-that-adore-cuddles-and-hugs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dog</a> getting yelled at, you assume he’s feeling bad,” Molinaro explained. “These assumptions of how you think the dog is feeling have nothing to do with the dog’s behavior or emotional cues, which is very striking.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mistaken-emotion-of-a-guilty-dog">Mistaken emotion of a “guilty” dog</h2>



<p>One of the most common misinterpretations in dog behavior is the so-called "guilty look." Many dog owners believe their pet feels guilt after doing something wrong, but research suggests otherwise.</p>



<p>“When you yell at your dog for doing something bad and she makes that guilty face, is it really because she is guilty, or is it because she is scared you are going to reprimand her more?” said Molinaro.</p>



<p>Dogs react to human tone, posture, and body language. What appears as guilt is often fear or submission, a response to their owner’s reaction rather than an understanding of wrongdoing. This misunderstanding can affect training and the bond between pet and owner.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-influence-of-human-emotions">The influence of human emotions</h2>



<p>Another factor in misreading dog emotions is anthropomorphism - the tendency to attribute human emotions to animals. While humans and dogs share a close <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dogs-are-evolving-to-fit-the-modern-lives-of-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">relationship</a>, their emotional processing differs significantly.</p>



<p>“I have always found this idea that dogs and humans must have the same emotions to be very biased and without any real scientific proof to back it up, so I wanted to see if there are factors that might actually be affecting our perception of dog emotions,” Molinaro said.</p>



<p>Humans interpret emotions based on cultural and personal experiences. The way one person perceives sadness or happiness may differ from another. When it comes to animals, these subjective experiences shape how we understand their behavior, often leading to inaccurate assumptions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-better-understanding-of-dog-emotions">A better understanding of dog emotions</h2>



<p>So how can dog owners learn to interpret their pet’s emotions more accurately? The key lies in awareness and observation. Recognizing our own biases is the first step toward better communication.</p>



<p>“The first step is just to be aware that we are not that good at reading dogs’ emotions,” Molinaro said. “We need to be humbler in our understanding of our dogs.”</p>



<p>Every dog has unique emotional expressions. Rather than assuming their feelings based on the situation, owners should pay closer attention to specific behavioral cues. A wagging tail does not always mean happiness, just as a tucked tail does not always indicate guilt.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-building-a-stronger-bond">Building a stronger bond</h2>



<p>By focusing on a dog’s individual personality and behavior, owners can develop a deeper connection with their pets. Understanding emotions takes time and effort, but the rewards are invaluable.</p>



<p>Molinaro emphasized the importance of looking beyond external factors. “Really pay attention to your own dog’s cues and behaviors."</p>



<p>Taking a few extra seconds to assess a dog’s body language, rather than making quick assumptions, can lead to a more meaningful and trusting relationship. Ultimately, a stronger bond between humans and their canine companions comes not from assumptions, but from true understanding.</p>

Lost in translation: How we misread our dogs’ emotions

We think we understand our dogs and their emotions. We...

<p>When you take a deep breath, have you ever considered the composition of the air filling your lungs? Oxygen makes up only 21%, while nitrogen dominates. But this ratio has not always been constant. Throughout Earth’s history, oxygen levels have fluctuated, sometimes drastically, leading to mass extinctions and evolutionary shifts.</p>



<p>Scientists believe Earth’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-oxygen-discovery-deep-ocean-rocks-upends-centuries-of-scientific-beliefs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmosphere</a> became rich in oxygen about 2.5 billion years ago due to photosynthetic microorganisms. However, new research suggests volcanic activity may have played a crucial role in setting the stage for this transformation. </p>



<p>A team of scientists led by the University of Tokyo proposes that volcanic eruptions influenced precursor oxygenation events, or "whiffs," that signaled the coming Great Oxygenation Event (GOE).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-microbes-in-oxygenation">Role of microbes in oxygenation</h2>



<p>The GOE marked a significant increase in atmospheric oxygen, enabling the rise of complex life. The prevailing theory suggests that a surge in microorganisms capable of photosynthesis converted the carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere into one dominated by oxygen. </p>



<p>But before the GOE, smaller oxygenation events occurred, hinting at <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/it-took-200-million-years-for-earth-to-get-its-oxygen/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">earlier environmental shifts</a> that made oxygenation possible.</p>



<p>“Activity of microorganisms in the ocean played a central role in the evolution of atmospheric oxygen,” said Professor Eiichi Tajika from the Department of Earth and Planetary Science at the University of Tokyo. </p>



<p>“However, we think this would not have immediately led to atmospheric oxygenation because the amount of nutrients such as phosphate in the ocean at that time was limited, restricting activity of cyanobacteria, a group of bacteria capable of photosynthesis."</p>



<p>“It likely took some massive geological events to seed the oceans with nutrients, including the growth of the continents and, as we suggest in our paper, intense volcanic activity, which we know to have occurred.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-large-igneous-provinces-and-their-impact">Large igneous provinces and their impact</h2>



<p>The new study highlights the influence of large igneous provinces (LIPs), massive volcanic regions formed by intense eruptions. The researchers used a biogeochemical model to analyze how these eruptions altered Earth’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/water-might-have-formed-long-before-galaxies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmosphere</a>.</p>



<p>They found that volcanic activity increased atmospheric carbon dioxide, warming the climate and supplying nutrients to the ocean. This, in turn, boosted marine productivity and triggered short-lived increases in atmospheric oxygen.</p>



<p>These whiffs lasted for several million years, suggesting that volcanic events repeatedly caused temporary atmospheric oxygenation before the GOE. </p>



<p>However, as continents expanded, they reduced the likelihood of these transient events by stabilizing conditions. The study suggests that these whiffs indicate Earth was approaching a tipping point, leading to the permanent rise of atmospheric oxygen.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-signs-of-early-oxygen-bursts-on-earth">Signs of early oxygen bursts on Earth</h2>



<p>“Understanding the whiffs is critical for constraining the timing of the emergence of photosynthetic microorganisms. The occurrences are inferred from concentrations of elements sensitive to atmospheric oxygen levels in the geologic record,” said study lead author Yasuto Watanabe.</p>



<p>“The biggest challenge was to develop a numerical model that could simulate the complex, dynamic behavior of biogeochemical cycles under late Archean conditions."</p>



<p>“We built upon our shared experience with using similar models for other times and purposes, refining and coupling different components together to simulate the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breakthrough-study-will-help-identify-which-planets-can-support-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dynamic behavior</a> of the late-Archean Earth system in the aftermath of the volatile volcanic events.”</p>



<p>The team examined redox-sensitive elements such as molybdenum, rhenium, and selenium, which indicate oxidative weathering of continental minerals. One well-documented whiff occurred around 2.5 billion years ago and is recorded in the Mt. McRae Shale in Australia.</p>



<p>These findings, along with isotopic data, support the idea that transient oxygenation events were linked to volcanic activity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-linking-volcanism-to-oxygenation">Linking volcanism to oxygenation</h2>



<p>Volcanic eruptions release large amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, leading to warming and increased weathering of rocks. </p>



<p>This process delivers nutrients like phosphate to the ocean, fueling microbial activity. As these microorganisms thrived, they produced oxygen, leading to brief atmospheric oxygenation.</p>



<p>However, once the nutrient supply declined, oxygen levels dropped again. This cycle repeated until the GOE, when atmospheric conditions finally stabilized at higher oxygen levels. </p>



<p>The model suggests that whiffs were a key step in the Earth system's transition from a reducing to an oxidizing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oxygen-levels-on-exoplanets-reveal-presence-of-alien-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmosphere</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-short-oxygen-bursts-led-to-earth-s-air">Short oxygen bursts led to Earth's air</h2>



<p>These findings suggest that Earth’s atmosphere did not change in a single event but rather through a series of oxygenation episodes driven by geological and biological interactions. </p>



<p>The rise of oxygen-utilizing enzymes before the GOE supports the idea that life was already adapting to these transient oxygen-rich periods.</p>



<p>By linking large-scale volcanic activity to early atmospheric oxygenation, this research provides a clearer picture of how Earth evolved into the habitable planet it is today. </p>



<p>It also reinforces the idea that planetary-scale changes, driven by both internal and external factors, shaped the conditions necessary for complex life to emerge.</p>

Social expectations, academic pressures, and increasing screen time all contribute to this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/screen-time-delays-language-development-in-toddlers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">growing concern</a>. </p>



<p>But is technology the primary culprit? That’s the question researchers at the <a href="https://www.jyu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Jyväskylä</a> and the <a href="https://www.uef.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Eastern Finland</a> set out to answer.</p>



<p>The long-term study, which tracked 187 adolescents over eight years, offers some striking insights. Lifestyle choices - especially physical activity and screen time - emerge as key players in shaping mental well-being.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-screen-time-s-heavy-toll">Screen time’s heavy toll</h2>



<p>The more time adolescents spent on screens, the worse their mental health outcomes. But not all screens affected them equally. Mobile device use stood out as the biggest culprit, linked to heightened stress and depressive symptoms.</p>



<p>Dr. Eero Haapala is a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Jyväskylä.</p>



<p>“Several international, evidence-based <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/green-spaces-are-key-to-reducing-kids-screen-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recommendations</a> suggest that the leisure screen time of children and adolescents should be limited to two hours per day. Personally, I think that even this figure is high, as it amounts to almost one month of screen time per year,” said Dr. Haapala. </p>



<p>A screen is just a tool - yet prolonged exposure can erode sleep quality, reduce meaningful social interactions, and expose adolescents to distressing online content. The result? More stress, more anxiety, more moments of feeling trapped in a digital loop.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-movement-as-a-buffer-against-stress">Movement as a buffer against stress</h2>



<p>Not all the findings were bleak. The research also uncovered a powerful antidote: movement. Adolescents who engaged in more physical activity - particularly supervised exercise - reported lower stress levels and fewer depressive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/children-under-two-should-not-be-exposed-to-tv-or-screen-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">symptoms</a>.</p>



<p>Sports participation, in particular, seemed to provide a buffer against mental health struggles, likely because of its structured environment and built-in social support.</p>



<p>“The modern sedentary lifestyle, with high screen exposure, challenges the mental health of children and adolescents,” said Dr. Haapala.</p>



<p>“Recent discussions have rightly focused on screen time and social media, but I hope our findings encourage adults in young people’s lives to promote a broad spectrum of healthy habits – especially by balancing screen time and physical activity.”</p>



<p>The key takeaway? Physical activity helps, but it’s not a cure-all. If screen time remains excessive, even active adolescents are at risk. The worst outcomes appeared in those with both high screen time and low physical activity - double trouble for mental health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-about-sleep-and-diet">What about sleep and diet?</h2>



<p>The researchers also examined the impact of sleep and diet.</p>



<p>Unlike screen time and physical activity, these factors had a weaker connection to mental health outcomes. This might be because the study’s participants generally had adequate sleep and relatively healthy diets, making it harder to detect their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/kids-with-too-much-screen-time-struggle-to-gain-language-skills/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">influence</a>.</p>



<p>“Achieving change requires collaboration,” said Dr. Haapala. "Society as a whole - from families to policymakers - must invest in promoting healthy lifestyles for children and adolescents by ensuring balanced screen time, sufficient physical activity, adequate sleep, and a nutritious diet.”</p>



<p>While diet and sleep didn’t play as strong a role in this particular study, previous research suggests they do matter. Poor sleep patterns and unhealthy diets have been linked to increased anxiety, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. Still, the dominant players in this study were screen time and physical activity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mobile-screens-are-the-worst-offenders">Mobile screens are the worst offenders</h2>



<p>One of the study’s most eye-opening revelations? Mobile devices had a significantly stronger negative impact on mental health than other forms of screen time.</p>



<p>Unlike television, which is often a passive experience, mobile devices demand constant interaction. Whether through social media, gaming, or endless scrolling, they create a cycle that’s hard to break. More engagement often means more stress, and the pressure to stay connected can take a toll on self-esteem and emotional well-being.</p>



<p>Social media, in particular, amplifies these effects. Teenagers are not just consuming content - they’re comparing, curating, and responding. The pressure to maintain an online presence, measure up to influencers, or keep up with peers can turn a harmless scroll into a breeding ground for self-doubt.</p>



<p>Cutting down on mobile device use may be one of the most effective ways to reduce adolescent stress levels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breaking-the-screen-time">Breaking the screen time</h2>



<p>One of the study’s strongest messages? Early intervention is key. </p>



<p>The habits children form in elementary school often stick with them into adolescence. If kids grow up with unrestricted screen time and little encouragement for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/taking-a-smartphone-break-can-improve-your-life-in-surprising-ways/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">physical activity</a>, they’re more likely to carry those patterns into their teenage years - when stress and depression become real risks.</p>



<p>Encouraging structured sports, outdoor play, and clear screen time limits can help. It’s not about eliminating screens but creating a balanced relationship with them. Programs that integrate both movement and responsible technology use could be the most effective way forward.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-everyday-choices-and-long-term-health">Everyday choices and long-term health</h2>



<p>This research is part of the Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children (PANIC) Study, which investigates how lifestyle choices impact long-term health outcomes. </p>



<p>The PANIC Study operates within the Metabolic Diseases Research Community at the University of Eastern Finland. This research network, consisting of 20 teams, works across genetics, patient care, and disease prevention to uncover new ways to support physical and mental well-being.</p>



<p>By tracking children’s habits over several years, studies like this one help paint a clearer picture of how everyday choices - like how much time we spend moving versus sitting - shape adolescent health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-screen-time">Implications for screen time</h2>



<p>This study delivers a clear message: less screen time, more movement. It’s a simple formula, yet difficult to implement in today’s digital world. </p>



<p>Parents, teachers, and policymakers all have a role to play in helping young people develop healthier habits.</p>



<p>Future research will likely explore how different lifestyle factors - diet, sleep, stress management - interact with screen time and exercise.</p>



<p>But for now, the evidence is strong. Cutting back on mobile devices and increasing physical activity could be two of the best steps toward improving adolescent mental health.</p>

<p>Conservation scientists from UNSW Sydney have used DNA technology to confirm that feral cats are the primary predators of reintroduced native animals in South Australia. </p>



<p>This research aligns with existing data showing that feral cats have caused more native animal deaths than any other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/snow-leopards-tracing-the-evolution-of-an-apex-predator/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">predator</a> in Australia. Experts believe feral cats are responsible for two-thirds of mammal extinctions since European settlement.</p>



<p>The recent study suggests that the impact of feral cats may be greater than previously estimated. </p>



<p>In collaboration with experts from the University of Adelaide, the researchers from <a href="https://www.unsw.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNSW</a> found that conventional methods of determining the cause of death often underestimated the role of feral cats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pinpointing-the-cause-of-death">Pinpointing the cause of death</h2>



<p>Professor Katherine Moseby, a co-author of the study, noted that pinpointing the exact cause of death for native animals has always been challenging.</p>



<p>“In past releases, we'd be radio tracking <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saber-toothed-predators-evolved-the-perfect-fangs-for-hunting/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animals</a> after release, and if we found dead animals, it would be difficult to determine what caused their death. We would use field evidence like animal spoor, carcass remains, or bite marks on collars to guess whether it was feral cats, birds of prey, fox, or if they just died a natural death," said Professor Moseby.</p>



<p>“And because we’re working in really remote areas, it is difficult to access vets for necropsy. So taking a DNA swab of the dead animal was a really good way to identify if predation was the cause of death. And then we decided to compare the DNA outcomes with evidence in the field to determine if the latter was a reliable method of determining cause of death.”</p>



<p>The team concluded that field evidence alone was not a dependable way to confirm feral cat predation. DNA testing and necropsy were necessary to establish whether a cat had killed an animal.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-from-conservation-sites">Evidence from conservation sites</h2>



<p>The scientists analyzed DNA evidence collected from radio tracking collars and wounds on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/largest-predator-prey-feast-ever-seen-in-the-ocean-enormous-quickly-altered-food-chain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animals</a>’ bodies. The team examined two conservation sites in South Australia where native species had been released.</p>



<p>At one location, 148 brush-tailed possums and 110 western quolls were introduced between 2014 and 2016. At another, 42 greater bilbies and 89 bettongs were released in 2017. </p>



<p>Of the 389 animals reintroduced, 74 were confirmed to have been killed by cats. DNA analysis identified 71 of these cases. Veterinary necropsy confirmed six cat-related deaths, while researchers witnessed three instances of feral cats killing prey.</p>



<p>Three of the four released species managed to survive in smaller numbers. However, bettongs failed to establish a stable population due to heavy predation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-underestimated-killings-by-feral-cats">Underestimated killings by feral cats</h2>



<p>The research showed that even DNA analysis underestimated the number of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shell-fossils-lapworthella-fasciculata-reveal-ancient-predator-prey-battle-517-million-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animals</a> killed by feral cats.</p>



<p>“The DNA is good, but it's not infallible, and a lot of that is because we’re trying to get DNA from cat saliva found on the carcass, and that's quite difficult because DNA degrades quickly in the environment,” said Professor Moseby.</p>



<p>“But ultimately it highlighted that there are a lot more cat killings than previously thought.”</p>



<p>This discovery reinforces concerns that current estimates of feral cat predation may not fully capture the extent of their impact on native wildlife.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-in-controlling-feral-cats">Challenges in controlling feral cats</h2>



<p>Senior author Ned Ryan-Schofield noted that one goal of the study was to assess whether conservationists could rely on field data for quicker assessments of cat predation.</p>



<p>“This could trigger prompt management action like increased cat control rather than waiting until DNA analysis occurred. However, we found that field evidence of cat predation are not obvious and even DNA testing is not infallible,” said Ryan-Schofield, a postgraduate researcher with the <a href="https://www.adelaide.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Adelaide</a>.</p>



<p>Despite advances in research, controlling feral cat populations remains a difficult task. The researchers acknowledge that feral cats will continue to pose a significant threat to native animals for years to come.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-conservation-efforts">Future conservation efforts</h2>



<p>Professor Moseby emphasized the importance of continued <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-predator-found-in-one-of-the-deepest-parts-of-the-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">research</a> and improved management strategies.</p>



<p>“Until we develop genetic tools or other broad-scale methods targeted at feral cats, we can only rely on intensely managing them as best we can,” said Professor Moseby.</p>



<p>”We hope that this research might encourage more conservationists to use DNA and necropsy to identify the cause of death of animals in wildlife reintroductions, and to increase cat control even if no obvious evidence of cat predation are present.”</p>



<p>While eradicating feral cats from the Australian outback may not be possible in the near future, improving tracking and conservation techniques could help reduce their impact on endangered wildlife.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>

<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>

<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
