<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>

<p>The research suggests that even a single day of poor sleep can affect the immune system in ways that raise inflammation. </p>



<p>The findings come from Dr. Fatema Al-Rashed, lead researcher at the <a href="http://dasmaninstitute.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dasman Diabetes Institute</a> in Kuwait City, who worked with a team to uncover connections between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-helps-prevent-unwanted-memories-from-popping-up/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">disrupted rest</a> and physical health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-sleep-matters">Why sleep matters</h2>

<p>Monocytes are known as the body’s first responders when a threat appears. One type, known as non-classical monocytes, became more common in those who did not sleep.</p>



<p>These cells can ramp up pro-inflammatory signals, raising concerns about ongoing health effects. If this pattern becomes routine, it might open the door to lingering problems.</p>



<p>Experts emphasize that rest is a key factor in balancing immune cell populations. Small tweaks in a person’s daily routine might keep these changes in check.</p>

<p>"This disruption in sleep has profound implications for immune health and overall well-being," said Dr. Al-Rashed. She noted that modern lifestyles often clash with the body’s need for consistent rest.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-small-sleep-changes-improve-overall-health">Small sleep changes improve overall health</h2>



<p>The research team hopes to pinpoint how modest changes in rest might help curb disease risk. "We aim for this research to drive policies and strategies that recognize the critical role of sleep in public health," said Dr. Al-Rashed.</p>



<p>Community interventions could nudge people toward better sleep habits. Even simple actions like placing a limit on nighttime device use might spark improvements.</p>



<p>More comprehensive guidelines might come from health authorities who see a link between quality sleep and national well-being. Some public health campaigns are already highlighting the importance of regular sleep.</p>



<p>Employers may consider flexible shifts or designated rest areas to accommodate workers with hectic schedules. Such steps could ease the strain on employees juggling multiple responsibilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exploring-lifestyle-factors">Exploring lifestyle factors</h2>



<p>Foods high in sugar or caffeine can disturb restful nights. Eating a balanced dinner earlier in the evening is often easier on the digestive system.</p>



<p>Bright screens from phones, TVs, or computers can trick the brain into thinking it is still daytime. This effect can reduce melatonin secretion, which helps maintain the body’s natural clock.</p>



<p>Regular physical activity often helps individuals nod off more easily. However, high-intensity workouts late at night might boost alertness instead of promoting calm.</p>

<p>More than 99% of birds can fly, but some species have lost this ability over time. Penguins, ostriches, and kiwis evolved into flightless forms, adapting to their specific environments. </p>



<p>A recent study published in the journal <em>Evolution</em> examines how birds transition from flight to flightlessness. </p>



<p>The researchers compared the feathers and bodies of flightless birds with their closest flying relatives, identifying which traits change first.</p>



<p>These findings provide insights into evolutionary processes and help determine whether extinct birds were flightless.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-some-birds-stop-flying">Why some birds stop flying</h2>



<p>All <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-evolution-timeline-pushed-back-20-million-years-by-baminornis-zhenghensis-discovery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birds</a> that are flightless today descended from ancestors that could fly.</p>



<p>“Going from something that can't fly to flying is quite the engineering challenge, but going from something that can fly to not flying is rather easy,” noted Evan Saitta, a research associate at the <a href="https://www.fieldmuseum.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Field Museum</a> in Chicago and lead author of the study.</p>



<p>Birds often lose the ability to fly when they settle in predator-free islands. Without evolutionary pressure to escape threats, they gradually adapt to a ground-based lifestyle. Another common reason for flight loss is a shift to semi-aquatic living. </p>



<p>Penguins, for instance, “fly” underwater using their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-birds-brains-evolved-to-enable-them-to-fly/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wings</a>, leading to significant changes in their feathers and skeletons.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flight-loss-in-modern-birds">Flight loss in modern birds</h2>



<p>Saitta, primarily a paleontologist, took advantage of the Field Museum’s vast bird collections. </p>



<p>“I suddenly had access to all these modern birds, and it made me wonder, ‘What happens when a bird loses the ability to fly?’” </p>



<p>Measuring various feather characteristics, Saitta compared preserved skins of 30 flightless species and their closest flying relatives. He also examined more distant species to expand the dataset.</p>



<p>Previous studies show when different flightless birds diverged from their flying ancestors. Ostriches lost flight much earlier than the Fuegian steamer duck. Their feathers reflect this difference. </p>



<p>“Ostriches have been flightless for so long that their feathers are no longer optimized for being aerodynamic,” said Saitta. Their long, shaggy feathers serve different purposes, such as insulation and display.</p>



<p>In contrast, the Fuegian steamer duck, which lost flight more recently, retains feathers similar to those of flying ducks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-feather-evolution-after-flight-loss">Feather evolution after flight loss</h2>



<p>Saitta was surprised at how long flightless <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-wings-inspire-improvements-in-airplane-safety/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birds</a> retained flight-adapted feathers. Logically, one would expect unnecessary feather traits to change quickly. However, his postdoctoral advisor Peter Makovicky offered another explanation.</p>



<p>“Pete pointed out that when trying to understand why a modern bird looks the way it does, you can’t just think about natural selection or relaxation thereof. You have to also consider developmental constraints,” said Saitta.</p>



<p>Feathers develop in a strict sequence that is difficult to alter. When birds lose flight, their feather features disappear in the reverse order they evolved.</p>



<p>Feather evolution follows a predictable pattern. Flight feathers first evolved in dinosaurs and became increasingly complex. When a bird loses flight, these adaptations vanish in reverse order. </p>



<p>Some recent features, like asymmetric flight feathers, disappear quickly. However, fundamental feather structures take much longer to change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-skeleton-changes-occur-first">Skeleton changes occur first </h2>



<p>Saitta and his team also found that certain body features change more quickly than feathers. </p>



<p>“The first things to change when <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/songbirds-talk-to-each-other-during-migration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birds</a> lose flight, possibly even before the flight feathers become symmetrical, is the proportion of their wings and their tails. We therefore see skeletal changes and also a change in overall body mass,” explained Saitta.</p>



<p>Skeleton changes occur before feather modifications because bones require more energy to grow. Evolution prioritizes reducing these costs first. </p>



<p>“Let’s say a bird species lands on an island where they are able to safely live on the ground and don’t need to fly anymore. The first things to go are going to be these big, expensive bones and muscles, but feathers are cheap, so there’s less active selection to change them,” said Saitta.</p>



<p>Maintaining a flight-ready skeleton is a larger evolutionary burden than retaining unnecessary feathers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fossilized-flightless-birds">Fossilized flightless birds</h2>



<p>This study aids paleontologists who study fossilized birds and feathered dinosaurs.</p>



<p>“Flight didn’t evolve overnight, and flight, or at least gliding, was possibly lost many times in extinct species, just as in surviving bird lineages. Our paper helps show the order in which birds’ bodies reflect those changes,” said Saitta.</p>



<p>Fossilized feathers alone may not indicate whether an ancient bird could fly. Instead, researchers should first examine body mass and wing proportions. </p>



<p>These traits change before feathers do. If skeletal features suggest flight loss, feather asymmetry can provide further confirmation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-past-research-on-flight-loss">Past research on flight loss</h2>



<p>Saitta’s study aligns with earlier research on feather changes after flight loss. </p>



<p>“The good news is that because I came at this question from a different angle, we got results that are very consistent with a lot of the previous research, but I think maybe a little bit broader than if I had approached the question with a more specific focus,” said Saitta.</p>



<p>By analyzing both skeletal and feather changes, this research offers a more complete understanding of how and why birds lose the ability to fly. It also provides valuable tools for identifying flightlessness in extinct species, adding another layer to the study of avian evolution.</p>

<p>A giant iceberg is drifting from the icy edges of Antarctica, and experts warn that this massive chunk is just one more sign of a changing climate.</p>



<p>As temperatures rise, the formation of these migrating ice islands is happening more frequently. Experts wonder how much bigger these chunks could get and what that means for ocean life.</p>



<p>Dr. Peter Bijl at <a href="https://www.uu.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Utrecht University</a> leads a team investigating iceberg <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-largest-iceberg-a23a-breaks-free-from-ocean-cyclone/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">routes</a> to understand how these icy remnants of the past might affect our future.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-antarctica-s-icebergs-break-away">Why Antarctica's icebergs break away</h2>



<p>Icebergs are more than just <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-largest-iceberg-may-crash-into-a-wildlife-sanctuary/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">floating ice</a>. They form when large chunks of glaciers break away from the main ice mass and drift into open water.</p>



<p>Meteorological shifts can accelerate this breakage, leading to towering shapes that can stretch for miles. During warmer periods in Earth’s distant past, these frosty giants also broke free and ventured far beyond the polar circle.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-missing-link-from-the-past">A missing link from the past</h2>



<p>During the late Eocene epoch, Earth was generally warmer than it is today. Scientists suspect that some regions near the present-day Weddell Sea still managed to generate icy blocks that traveled vast distances.</p>



<p>Evidence of these journeys emerged when ancient ice-rafted debris (IRD) was found near South Orkney. IRD refers to rock fragments carried by drifting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giant-icebergs-are-not-the-main-threat-to-antarcticas-stability/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice</a>, which later settles on the ocean floor as the ice melts away.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-details-about-iceberg-survival">New details about iceberg survival </h2>



<p>Master’s student Mark Elbertsen used computer simulations to uncover surprising details about iceberg survival during those warmer intervals. He showed that some areas of the Weddell Sea likely remained cold enough for medium-sized bergs to stay intact and reach distant spots.</p>



<p>“The high melt rates under the Eocene warm climate require a minimum initial iceberg mass on the order of 100 Mt,” wrote Elbertsen and colleagues. By meeting that threshold, these drifting blocks could endure the journey across warmer waters and still leave traces in places like South Orkney.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-antarctica-s-iceberg-breakaways">Antarctica’s iceberg breakaways</h2>



<p><a href="https://climate.nasa.gov/vital-signs/land-ice/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Scientists</a> now wonder if the same conditions are appearing again, but for a different reason. Today, human-driven warming threatens to shift the balance between ice accumulation and melt in Antarctica even faster.</p>



<p>With more calving events on the horizon, the Southern Ocean faces a flood of fresh water that might affect deep ocean circulation. </p>



<p>Experts also warn that this influx could influence how carbon is stored in the seas, potentially speeding up broader <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-largest-iceberg-a23a-undergoing-major-erosion/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate shifts</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-icebergs-and-ocean-currents">Icebergs and ocean currents</h2>

<p>Species like penguins, seals, and whales rely on stable conditions in the Southern Ocean. Large icebergs can disrupt or enhance their feeding grounds, depending on where the ice settles or breaks apart.</p>



<p>An iceberg that runs aground may stir up nutrients and plankton, supporting local fish populations. Some scientists see these drifting masses as both hazards and possible lifelines in regions struggling with warming waters.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>

<p>Asteroid Dimorphos is a small space rock that orbits a larger companion. It gained attention when NASA investigated ways to alter its trajectory in case it ever threatened Earth.</p>

<p>“We used Hubble Space Telescope's images and numerical simulations to quantify a viable mechanism of the ejecta evolution and successfully estimated ejected particles' mass, velocity, and size," explained Professor Ferrari.</p>



<p>"We also found complex interactions of such particles with the asteroid system and solar radiation pressure, i.e., sunlight pushing ejecta particles."</p>

<p>“If the impact is large, more ejecta fly out of the surface but are more affected by surface tilts. This process makes the ejecta deviate from the ideal direction, reducing the asteroid push,” explained Professor Hirabayashi.</p>

<p><a href="https://keck.usc.edu/faculty-search/li-zhang/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Li Zhang</a> at the University of Southern California and his colleagues have been looking into these interactions. </p>



<p>They captured <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adq2677" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">footage</a> of lab mice confronting a familiar cage mate that had been anesthetized and was unresponsive.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rescue-behavior-in-mice">Rescue behavior in mice</h2>



<p>“They start with sniffing, and then grooming, and then with a very intensive or physical interaction,” related Li Zhang.</p>



<p>Scientists observed grooming and mouth-focused nibbling. Some mice targeted the unmoving partner’s mouth area, pulling its tongue out in an attempt to clear the airway. </p>



<p>These same actions occasionally turned up in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deer-mice-shed-light-on-adaptive-evolution/">mice</a> that were interacting with companions that had passed away.</p>



<p>Researchers noticed how these stereotypical gestures tapered off once the still mouse revived and regained motion. </p>



<p>They also found that a mouse gave more attention to an unresponsive peer that was recognizable than to one that was a stranger. </p>



<p>This distinction suggests that familiarity plays a role in prompting these rescue-like behaviors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insight-from-other-animals">Insight from other animals</h2>



<p>Large mammals such as chimpanzees, dolphins, and elephants have been recorded aiding group members that are in trouble. </p>



<p>Some dolphins have guided a distressed pod mate to the surface so it could breathe, which has long intrigued scientists who study social behaviors in marine animals. </p>



<p>Elephants have also been known to support injured relatives. These examples suggest that lending a helping hand isn’t always limited to humans.</p>



<p>Rodents, however, can be trickier to monitor in the wild. Mice prefer concealed spaces and often scatter at the slightest hint of danger. That makes it challenging to film them tending to an ailing group member outside the lab.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-oxytocin-in-rescue-behavior">Role of oxytocin in rescue behavior</h2>



<p>These rescue-like gestures appear linked to the presence of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oxytocin-is-crucial-beyond-its-role-as-the-love-hormone/">oxytocin</a>, a hormone that influences bonding in many species. The new study detected active oxytocin-releasing neurons in the amygdala and hypothalamus. </p>



<p>These brain regions, known to handle emotion and social behavior, lit up when mice recognized a cage mate in distress. </p>



<p>“If we extended the observation window, maybe the success rate could be even higher,” said team member <a href="https://keck.usc.edu/faculty-search/huizhong-tao/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Huizhong Tao</a>, also from USC.</p>



<p>Additional evidence showed that turning off these neuron signals or blocking their ability to dispatch oxytocin reduced the mice’s apparent attempts to help. </p>



<p>Activating the same neurons produced more grooming and nibbling.</p>



<p>The link between this hormone and nurturing conduct has come up in past research, supporting the view that many mammals share some wiring for caring.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-importance-for-group-survival">Importance for group survival</h2>



<p>Scientists think these behaviors might help keep social groups together and improve survival. Young <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mice-pass-the-mirror-test-does-that-mean-they-are-self-aware/">mice</a> that responded to a motionless mate saw that partner bounce back to normal sooner than those left alone. </p>



<p>That small difference might affect how groups function in their natural habitats, where every second can be a matter of life or death.</p>



<p>Some researchers say caution is needed when drawing big conclusions. Animals often do things that look human-like, but motives can be complicated. </p>



<p>Still, these lab findings give hints that even small creatures might care more about their companions than we once believed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bigger-picture">Bigger picture</h2>



<p>Many animals rely on social bonds for carrying out different activities, from defense to nurturing infants. </p>



<p>This study raises the possibility that more species have built-in behaviors that benefit the whole community. </p>



<p>Researchers suspect that similar patterns might exist in other species but remain unnoticed because of how tough it is to observe these moments in the wild.</p>



<p>Oxytocin is a hormone found in many vertebrate species and the researchers suggest that it could underpin an innate emergency response to assist an unresponsive group member. </p>



<p>This revival behavior may thus be widely present, particularly among social animals.</p>



<p>The discovery that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/male-mice-turn-to-female-mice-to-avoid-fights-keep-social-peace/">mice act as tiny caregivers</a> prompts new questions. Scientists plan to test if there are variations among different strains of mice. </p>



<p>Some want to see if environmental factors, such as stress or crowding, affect how likely mice are to step up for a comatose mate.</p>

<p>For centuries, people have been amazed by auroras, which light up the polar skies in glowing shades of green, red, and purple. But these lights reflect more than just beauty - they signify the powerful forces shaping space weather. </p>



<p>Auroras occur when the Sun’s charged particles hit Earth’s upper atmosphere. But another invisible force also plays a key role in space weather events.</p>



<p>Electrojets are massive electrical currents that flow around Earth’s poles, carrying nearly a million amps per second. When they change, they can disrupt communication, affect satellites, and even cause power outages. </p>



<p>Scientists still have many questions about how these currents form, shift, and interact with Earth’s magnetic field.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ezie-s-mission-to-study-electrojets">EZIE's mission to study electrojets</h2>



<p>To find answers, NASA is preparing to launch a new mission: the Electrojet Zeeman Imaging Explorer (<a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/ezie/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EZIE</a>). This ambitious project will use a trio of CubeSats to study electrojets in unprecedented detail.</p>



<p>Scientists hope that EZIE’s observations will lead to better space <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-can-comets-tell-us-about-solar-activity-and-space-weather/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">weather</a> forecasts, helping protect astronauts, satellites, and power grids on Earth.</p>



<p>Auroral electrojets are part of a vast electrical circuit that stretches nearly 100,000 miles from Earth into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strong-solar-storm-warning-issued-as-two-cmes-will-hit-earth-tomorrow/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">space</a>. As solar wind interacts with our planet’s magnetic field, it generates currents that flow through the upper atmosphere, particularly in the polar regions.</p>



<p>These currents can shift rapidly, causing sudden changes in Earth’s magnetic field that ground-based systems may struggle to handle.</p>



<p>“EZIE is the first mission dedicated exclusively to studying the electrojets, and it does so with a completely new measurement technique,” said Larry Kepko, EZIE mission scientist at NASA’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Goddard Space Flight Center</a>.</p>



<p>Previous studies of electrojets relied on ground-based observations and scattered satellite data. While these efforts provided valuable insights, they left many aspects of the electrojets’ behavior unclear. </p>



<p>EZIE’s mission is to fill these gaps and provide a more complete picture of how these powerful currents evolve.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-observing-the-behavior-of-electrojets">Observing the behavior of electrojets </h2>



<p>The EZIE <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/ezie/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mission</a> will deploy three small CubeSats, each about the size of a carry-on suitcase, into a synchronized orbit around Earth. These satellites will travel in a “string-of-pearls” formation, following one another as they pass over the poles at an altitude of 350 miles. </p>



<p>Each CubeSat will observe the same region of the atmosphere at slightly different times - anywhere from two to ten minutes apart - allowing scientists to track how electrojets change over short periods.</p>



<p>Each satellite carries a Microwave Electrojet Magnetogram, a sophisticated instrument designed to measure the strength and direction of electrojet currents. Developed at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, this instrument detects microwave emissions from oxygen molecules in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breakthrough-in-space-weather-forecasting-will-help-us-predict-solar-eruptions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmosphere</a>. </p>



<p>Normally, these molecules emit microwaves at a frequency of 118 gigahertz, but when influenced by strong magnetic fields - such as those produced by electrojets - this emission line splits in a process known as Zeeman splitting.</p>



<p>By analyzing this effect, EZIE can determine how electrojets behave in real time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-advancing-space-weather-science">Advancing space weather science </h2>



<p>One of the biggest challenges in studying electrojets is their location. They flow through a region of the atmosphere too high for balloons to reach yet too low for traditional satellites to dwell for long periods. </p>



<p>EZIE’s approach solves this problem by using a remote-sensing technique that allows it to measure electrojets from space without needing to fly directly through them.</p>



<p>“The utilization of the Zeeman technique to remotely map current-induced magnetic fields is really a game-changing approach,” said Sam Yee, EZIE’s principal investigator at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.</p>



<p>The technology used in EZIE’s instruments has been refined through past NASA missions, such as TEMPEST-D and CubeRRT. </p>



<p>These earlier efforts focused on Earth’s weather systems, but their advancements in radio detection and signal processing have now been adapted for space weather research.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-global-citizen-science-initiative">A global citizen science initiative </h2>



<p>NASA is also involving students and volunteers in the EZIE mission. Through a citizen science initiative, dozens of EZIE magnetometer kits will be distributed to students in the U.S. and volunteers worldwide.</p>



<p>These participants will measure magnetic field variations from the ground, allowing researchers to compare data from Earth with EZIE’s space-based <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-sun-has-officially-reached-its-solar-maximum-period-in-this-solar-cycle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">observations</a>.</p>



<p>“EZIE scientists will be collecting magnetic field data from above, and the students will be collecting magnetic field data from the ground,” said Nelli Mosavi, EZIE project manager at APL.</p>



<p>By engaging the public, the experts hope to inspire the next generation of scientists while also improving their research through a global network of observations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-launching-during-solar-maximum">Launching during solar maximum</h2>



<p>EZIE will launch in March of 2025 aboard a SpaceX <a href="https://www.spacex.com/vehicles/falcon-9/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Falcon 9</a> rocket from <a href="https://www.vandenberg.spaceforce.mil" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vandenberg Space Force Base</a> in California.</p>



<p>The mission is set to coincide with the peak of the Sun’s 11-year activity cycle, known as solar maximum. This timing is significant, as solar storms and increased Sun activity intensify auroral electrojets, making them easier to study.</p>



<p>“It’s better to launch during solar max,” said Kepko. “The electrojets respond directly to solar activity.”</p>



<p>By launching at this time, EZIE will have the best chance of capturing the strongest electrojet events, providing more detailed and dynamic data for scientists to analyze.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exploring-the-sun-s-powerful-influence">Exploring the Sun's powerful influence </h2>



<p>EZIE will work alongside other upcoming NASA missions, including <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/punch/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PUNCH</a> (Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere), which will investigate how material from the Sun’s atmosphere transforms into the solar wind. </p>



<p>Together, these missions will expand our understanding of the Sun’s influence on Earth and the space environment.</p>



<p>The project also highlights the growing role of CubeSats in space research. These small, cost-effective satellites allow scientists to conduct cutting-edge research that would have been impossible a decade ago.</p>



<p>“This is a mission that couldn’t have flown a decade ago,” Kepko said. “It’s pushing the envelope of what is possible, all on a small satellite. It’s exciting to think about what we will discover.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-era-of-space-weather-monitoring">New era of space weather monitoring </h2>



<p>Managed by NASA's Explorers Program Office, the EZIE mission is funded by NASA’s <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/heliophysics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Heliophysics Division</a> and led by the <a href="https://www.jhuapl.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory</a>. </p>



<p>By unlocking the mysteries of auroral electrojets, EZIE could revolutionize our ability to predict and mitigate the effects of space weather. </p>



<p>From protecting astronauts in orbit to safeguarding power grids on Earth, the mission’s findings could have lasting impacts on both science and daily life.</p>



<p>As EZIE begins its mission, it will uncover new details about the hidden forces shaping Earth and its connection to the Sun.</p>

<p>More than two million years ago, something unusual happened to the viruses that infect fish in Lake Tanganyika, East Africa. The different types of viruses diversified rapidly indicating heightened mutation rates that have left scientists puzzled. </p>



<p>Lake Tanganyika - the continent’s deepest body of water - sits in the East African Rift, framed by rugged highlands that separate it from surrounding regions. </p>



<p>The lake stretches over 400 miles (645 kilometers), and holds a hefty portion of the world’s accessible freshwater.</p>



<p>Researchers have suggested a possible connection between the diversification of viruses infecting fish and increased levels of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hess-observatory-detects-highest-energy-cosmic-rays-ever-observed-origin-unknown/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmic radiation</a> around that same time period.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-cosmic-rays-the-basics">Understanding cosmic rays - the basics</h2>



<p>Cosmic rays are high-energy particles that zip through space at nearly the speed of light. They come from many different places in the Universe, like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/supernova-explosions-could-damage-distant-planets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exploding stars (supernovae)</a>, the Sun, and even mysterious sources outside our galaxy. </p>



<p>When these particles slam into Earth’s atmosphere, they create a shower of secondary particles that can reach the surface. </p>



<p>Some cosmic rays are so powerful that they can even mess with electronics, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-rare-g5-level-geomagnetic-storm-highest-level-hits-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">disrupt satellite communications</a>, and slightly increase radiation exposure for astronauts and high-altitude flights. </p>



<p>Scientists are still unraveling their secrets, but one thing’s clear - they’re a major player in the universe’s high-energy drama.</p>



<p>Despite their sci-fi name, cosmic rays are a natural part of life on Earth. Our planet’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/earths-magnetic-field-origin-structure-and-impact-on-humanity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">magnetic field</a> and atmosphere act like a shield, blocking most of them before they reach us. </p>



<p>But they still play a role in shaping Earth’s environment - some studies even suggest they might influence cloud formation and, in turn, the climate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cosmic-radiation-and-evolution">Cosmic radiation and evolution</h2>



<p>Scientists had previously discovered radioactive iron in deep-sea sediments that indicate the effects of a nearby supernova event around 2.5 million years ago. </p>



<p>The star’s explosion released intense ionizing cosmic radiation which, based on modeling predictions, could have collided with the Earth’s surface for roughly 100,000 years.</p>



<p>“It’s really cool to find ways in which these super distant things could impact our lives or the planet’s habitability,” said lead author Caitlyn Nojiri from <a href="https://www.ucsc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Santa Cruz</a>.</p>



<p>Prior studies have shown that cosmic radiation can break DNA strands, potentially changing genetic material and affecting the way in which organisms evolve.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cosmic-rays-linked-to-viral-changes">Cosmic rays linked to viral changes</h2>



<p>Noriji and colleagues set out to explore whether cosmic radiation could have played a part in the expansion of viruses identified in Lake Tanganyika's fish species.</p>



<p>The research team does not claim absolute certainty about linking cosmic events to the rise of new aquatic pathogens. “We can’t say that they are connected, but they have a similar timeframe,” said Nojiri.</p>



<p>The biggest surprise was learning that a distant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strange-high-energy-cosmic-rays-did-something-outside-our-galaxy-send-them-here/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stellar</a> explosion and a local virus surge possibly overlapped in time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-piecing-together-the-cosmic-trail">Piecing together the cosmic trail</h2>



<p>Data on iron-60, a radioactive isotope created by stellar blasts, helped trace back the star’s location. </p>



<p>Calculations suggest that our solar system floated through the Local Bubble, an area of sparse gas shaped by the explosions of multiple ancient supernovae.</p>



<p>Scientists linked that passage to increased cosmic rays reaching Earth. Some researchers believe those rays, when strong enough, can cause mutations and potentially influence biological <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cosmic-rays-help-archaeologists-determine-age-discoveries-prehistoric-settlements/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">outcomes</a>. </p>



<p>The current study highlights the importance of cosmic events that might alter life in unexpected ways.</p>



<p>Nojiri’s path began in community college, where she discovered a passion for astrophysics. She joined specialized programs that guided her into research, with mentorship along the way.</p>



<p>“People from different walks of life bring different perspectives to science and can solve problems in very different ways,” said Enrico Ramirez-Ruiz, who also contributed to the study. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cosmic-rays-and-viral-diversity">Cosmic rays and viral diversity</h2>



<p>Questions still remain about how cosmic rays might accelerate mutation in viruses, especially in an environment as distinct as Lake Tanganyika. </p>



<p>Scientists point to the uniqueness of this rift lake, which has isolated populations of species that are rarely found elsewhere.</p>



<p>Researchers believe that once DNA strands are damaged, viral replication might shift in ways that spawn more diversity. </p>



<p>This line of reasoning has inspired follow-up work on other evolutionary bursts, searching for correlations with cosmic phenomena.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-any-of-this-matter">Why does any of this matter?</h2>



<p>Although the supernova event occurred millions of years ago, scientists are still interested in the potential echoes today. </p>



<p>Some teams wonder if modern species still carry vestiges of ancient mutation waves that were triggered by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unexplained-radiation-spike-found-deep-in-the-pacific-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmic energy</a>.</p>



<p>Other teams are focused on current cosmic radiation levels - assessing whether another close stellar explosion, though unlikely soon, could produce a similar <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-particle-acceleration-new-source-of-cosmic-rays-discovered/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">influence</a>. </p>



<p>Understanding these patterns potentially helps to track life’s changes over geological time.</p>

<p>Scientists continue to explore how radiation from distant supernovae may have influenced evolution in Earth’s ecosystems. Each new discovery strengthens the idea that cosmic forces can impact life in surprising ways.</p>



<p>Nojiri hopes her work will inspire future scientists to explore the deep connections between space and life. The study of cosmic rays continues to offer valuable clues about Earth’s past and future.</p>

How cosmic rays from a supernova explosion impacted Earth and changed history

<p>Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that plays a significant role in global warming, yet its persistent emissions often go unnoticed.</p>



<p>As we strive for a more sustainable and climate-friendly future, understanding the sources of methane emissions is crucial to predicting the ability of the Earth's atmosphere to trap heat from the sun.</p>



<p>A recent study has identified the top 10 regions worldwide where methane is consistently released, whether from natural wetlands or human-driven activities like oil extraction and the burning of coal.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-investigating-global-methane-emissions">Investigating global methane emissions</h2>



<p>Researchers analyzed data from hundreds of potential sources of methane. They relied on data from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/Applications/Observing_the_Earth/Copernicus/Sentinel-5P" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Copernicus Sentinel-5P mission</a>, which made it possible to estimate emissions at 217 potential locations.</p>



<p>Rather than focusing on "super-emitters" - typically oil and gas operations, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crucial-rare-earth-elements-discovered-coal-mines-united-states/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coal mines</a>, or poorly managed landfills that release large amounts of methane unpredictably - the study examined sources that emit methane consistently over time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-detecting-persistent-methane-sources">Detecting persistent methane sources</h2>



<p>The research was guided by a new methane concentration dataset and an algorithm developed at the <a href="https://www.uni-bremen.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bremen</a>. </p>



<p>The university was involved as part of the <a href="https://climate.esa.int/en/projects/ghgs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESA Climate Change Initiative Greenhouse Gas Project</a> and the ESA Earth System Science Hub projects, Methane CAMP and SMART-CH4.</p>



<p>Claus Zehner, ESA's Mission Manager for Sentinel-5P, highlighted the unique capabilities of the mission.</p>



<p>"Sentinel-5P is currently the only satellite that provides the feasibility to detect <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-have-emerged-as-major-source-of-methane-emissions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">methane sources</a> on a global scale and on a daily basis," noted Zehner.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spotting-the-persistent-emitters">Spotting the persistent emitters</h2>



<p>The experts analyzed methane concentrations at different locations between 2018 and 2021.</p>



<p>Any location where methane levels were consistently elevated, when compared to surrounding areas, was identified as a potentially persistent emitter.</p>

<p>"The aim was not to identify specific events, where methane is only released for a short period. Instead, the aim was to identify sources that emit almost continuously during the four years that were analyzed," said Michael Buchwitz, senior scientist at the University of Bremen.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wetlands-and-natural-methane-emissions">Wetlands and natural methane emissions</h2>



<p>The analysis identified the Sudd wetland in South Sudan as the world's largest persistent emitter of methane, at 4.5 million tons per year. </p>



<p>The Iberá wetland in Argentina is also a major emitter, with an annual production of 3.3 million tons of methane.</p>



<p>Microbes found in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-wetlands-day-the-hidden-potential-of-tidal-landscapes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wetland</a> soils and waters are often anaerobic and release significant quantities of methane as a result of their metabolic reactions. </p>



<p>Although this is a natural source of methane gas, it has meaningful consequences for global warming.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-footprint-from-oil-gas-and-coal">Human footprint from oil, gas, and coal</h2>



<p>Anthropogenic activities were the cause of the remaining eight largest persistent sources of this heat-trapping gas. </p>



<p>The biggest anthropogenic emissions were from the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/britain-approves-controversial-oil-and-gas-field-in-the-north-sea/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">oil and gas fields</a> on the west coast of Turkmenistan, where an estimated 3.5 million tons of methane are produced each year.</p>



<p>Coal fields in China and the Kuznetsk Basin, in Russia, along with oil and gas fields in the U.S. (Permian and Delaware Basins) made up most of the remaining top 10 global sites where methane is emitted slowly and persistently, leaving a considerable footprint.</p>



<p>In addition, Dakha in Bangladesh and Liaoning in China produced significant amounts methane through other anthropogenic activities, including wastewater management, digestive gas from ruminant animals such as cattle, sheep and goats, as well as from manure and rice&nbsp;fields.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-importance-of-methane">The importance of methane</h2>



<p>Methane is the second most important greenhouse gas after <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-carbon-dioxide-emissions-hit-a-record-high-in-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon dioxide</a>, as it contributes significantly to global warming.</p>



<p>Its concentrations have skyrocketed to almost three times the levels recorded in 1850, making high-emitting and persistent sources a serious concern for our planet.</p>



<p>Given that this gas has a greater warming effect than carbon dioxide, cutting methane emissions would be a crucial strategy in mitigating the effects of global warming.</p>



<p>It's our task to tackle these persistent sources head-on, in order to reduce the level of methane emissions entering the atmosphere on a daily basis. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-addressing-the-methane-challenge">Addressing the methane challenge</h2>



<p>Identifying the locations of the world’s most important persistent methane emitters is just the first step. Managing or reducing these emissions will require targeted strategies.</p>



<p>Unlike carbon dioxide, methane remains in the atmosphere for a short period of time only, but its warming potential is significantly greater. This potentially makes immediate reductions in emission highly effective in slowing climate change.</p>



<p>Governments and industries are increasingly prioritizing methane mitigation. The <a href="https://www.globalmethanepledge.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Global Methane Pledge</a>, launched at COP26, aims to cut emissions by at least 30% by 2030, with over 150 countries committed to action.</p>



<p>Technologies such as satellite monitoring, leak detection in oil and gas operations, and improved waste management practices are crucial in reducing emissions of methane that arise from human activities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-managing-wetlands-and-methane-emissions">Managing wetlands and methane emissions</h2>



<p>For natural sources like wetlands, mitigation is more complex. While these ecosystems are vital for biodiversity and carbon storage, researchers are exploring ways to balance their natural methane output with conservation efforts.</p>



<p>Strategies such as wetland restoration, water management techniques, and microbial interventions could help optimize emissions without harming these critical environments.</p>



<p>With growing awareness and improved detection capabilities, policymakers and scientists now have the data needed to drive targeted action.</p>

<p>Efficient energy sources are pivotal to our thriving modern society, and the continuous quest for "greener" energy alternatives has focused attention on geothermal energy.</p>



<p>Accessing this vast reservoir of natural heat from Earth has always been limited by one principle of real estate: location, location, location.</p>



<p>Conventional geothermal power plants rely on the presence of hot, porous rocks and abundant subsurface fluids.</p>



<p>This requirement has limited the application of geothermal systems to areas of recent volcanic activity, like Japan, Kenya, Iceland, and the western United States, among others.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-geothermal-energy-the-basics">Understanding geothermal energy - the basics</h2>



<p>Geothermal energy taps into Earth’s natural heat to generate electricity and warm buildings. Deep beneath the surface, the planet’s core stays scorching hot, heating underground reservoirs of water. </p>



<p>When we drill into these hot spots, we can release steam or hot water to spin turbines and produce power. </p>



<p>Some places, like Iceland and parts of the U.S., sit on top of prime geothermal real estate, making it easier to harness this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tapping-into-the-natural-power-of-plants-for-renewable-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">renewable energy</a>. </p>



<p>Unlike fossil fuels, geothermal doesn’t rely on the weather, so it provides a steady, reliable source of power year-round.</p>



<p>This technology cuts down on energy bills and reduces reliance on gas or coal. Plus, geothermal plants have a much smaller carbon footprint compared to traditional power sources.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-enhanced-geothermal-systems-egs">Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS)</h2>



<p>But things might be changing. For the past half-century, adapted techniques, originally designed for oilfields and now utilized for enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), have raised the prospects of extracting natural heat from a wider geographical range.</p>



<p>"There is a lot of excitement about enhanced geothermal energy," noted Roland Horne, a professor of energy science and engineering from the <a href="https://sustainability.stanford.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability</a>. </p>



<p>He was at the forefront of bringing together engineers, scientists, and managers from 28 countries at the Stanford Geothermal Workshop, and encouraging the exchange of innovative thinking and insights from ongoing geothermal projects worldwide.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-historical-evolution-of-geothermal-energy">Historical evolution of geothermal energy</h2>



<p>Geothermal power has historically been an integral component of the evolution of society. </p>



<p>Subterranean heat was used by the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-ancient-romans-made-such-incredibly-durable-concrete-is-no-longer-a-mystery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ancient Romans</a> to heat their structures thousands of years ago, and the world's first geothermal power plant was started in Italy, more than a century ago.</p>



<p>Geothermal power, in contemporary times, accounts for up to 45% of the electricity supply in certain nations, such as Kenya. </p>



<p>But it accounts for less than half of 1% of the global energy production. </p>



<p>The rise of EGS, though, could potentially redefine the role of geothermal sources in fulfilling our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/clean-energy-biodiversity-wildlife-habitats-delicate-balancing-act/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">energy</a> needs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rapid-drilling-lower-costs">Rapid drilling, lower costs</h2>



<p>Among the most promising developments in EGS are techniques borrowed from the shale gas boom in the early 2000s. </p>



<p>These include horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, or "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earthquakes-linked-to-nearby-oil-extraction-fracking-sites/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fracking</a>," which involve pumping fluids at high pressures into wells dug thousands of feet underground into rock formations.</p>



<p>The pressure opens up existing fractures in the rock or forms new ones, facilitating the flow of fluids, including hot water, to the surface.</p>



<p>Moreover, drilling multiple wells from a single pad enhances efficiency and keeps costs in check. </p>



<p>Synthetic diamond drill bits that can chew through hard rock faster are also crucial. </p>



<p>"Drilling faster makes an enormous difference to the whole economics of EGS,” noted Horne.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cost-competitive-geothermal-energy-systems">Cost-competitive geothermal energy systems</h2>



<p>Recent studies by a group of authors, including Ph.D. candidate Mohammad Aljubran, indicate that by 2027, enhanced geothermal system costs may be comparable with the average cost of electricity throughout the United States, which is around $80 per megawatt-hour.</p>



<p>For instance, in California, which currently produces about 5% of its <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/harvesting-electricity-with-nature-inspired-techniques/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">electricity</a> from geothermal energy, EGS could potentially increase its geothermal capacity tenfold, to 40 gigawatts, by 2045.</p>



<p>This significant increase could replace <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-carbon-emissions-hit-a-record-high-in-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossil fuels</a> for baseload power and add stability to a decarbonized power grid, complementing intermittent renewables like wind and solar. </p>



<p>"With EGS, we can meet the load," confirmed Horne.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-balancing-the-seismic-risks">Balancing the seismic risks</h2>



<p>Despite the immense potential, EGS is not without its challenges. </p>



<p>For example, fracking, a key component of EGS, is known to trigger earthquakes, thus posing a serious risk.</p>



<p>Mitigation tactics include avoiding seismic-prone regions for drilling, and implementing a traffic-light protocol - a monitoring system that dictates the pace of drilling based on seismic activities.</p>



<p>A recent development also involves creating many smaller fractures during drilling, instead of just one or a few massive fractures, to reduce the risk and size of induced seismicity.</p>



<p>“A drip-drip-drip instead of a fire hose approach can significantly reduce the risk and size of induced seismicity,” shared Horne.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-egs-could-power-the-future">EGS could power the future</h2>



<p>The scientific community is optimistic about EGS's potential. </p>



<p>Horne, along with his colleagues, hopes that the new study promotes further research and development of EGS as a sustainable and reliable energy source.</p>



<p>"EGS could be a game changer for green energy production not just in California but across the U.S. and worldwide. Safely harnessing Earth’s internal heat could substantially contribute to powering our future," he concluded.</p>

<p>Turbulence is no air traveler's friend. It can transform a tranquil flight into a terrifying, hair-raising experience within seconds.</p>



<p>But what if this could be a thing of the past, if scientists could develop a way to dramatically decrease the effects of air turbulence?</p>



<p>This is closer now to reality, thanks to a recent study on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in aviation.</p>



<p>In an exciting development, an international research team has tested an AI system to detect and combat turbulence.</p>



<p>The findings showed great potential for reducing turbulence through AI-driven technology, which would pave the way for a new era of more stable and efficient air travel.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-turbulence-and-flow-detachment">Turbulence and flow detachment</h2>



<p>A team of researchers from <a href="https://www.kth.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">KTH</a> Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center has conducted tests on an AI system designed to optimize airflow on aircraft wings.</p>



<p>Their goal is to improve aerodynamic stability and reduce turbulence-related risks.</p>



<p>The AI system specifically targets flow detachment, a critical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/revolutionizing-aerodynamics-airplane-emissions-ai-deep-learning-tool/">aerodynamic</a> issue. For an aircraft to remain airborne, air must move smoothly over the wing's surface - faster above and slower below. This gives the lift force that keeps the aircraft airborn.</p>



<p>When the airflow above the wing separates, it creates unstable swirling patterns, reducing lift and increasing drag, which can lead to a stall.</p>



<p>"When this happens, lift decreases, and drag increases, which can lead to a stall and make the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-flight-inspires-the-design-of-future-aircraft/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aircraft</a> harder to control," explained Ricardo Vinuesa, a researcher specializing in fluid dynamics and machine learning at KTH.</p>



<p>This phenomenon typically occurs when the wing's tilt is too steep or when airflow slows due to pressure changes.</p>



<p>The researchers found that AI-controlled synthetic jets - small devices that pulse air through the wing surface - can reduce the size of these airflow separation bubbles by 9%.</p>



<p>Previous approaches using fixed, periodic activations achieved only a 6.8% reduction, which demonstrates AI’s potential to fine-tune these mechanisms for greater efficiency.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-synthetic-jets-and-the-role-of-ai">Synthetic jets and the role of AI</h2>



<p>Synthetic jets pulse air in and out of a small opening in the wing surface. </p>



<p>They have the potential to complement physical features such as vortex generators that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/modern-airplanes-are-worse-for-the-environment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planes</a> rely on to maintain the correct balance of airflow above and below the wings.</p>



<p>The common theory was that these bursts should occur at regular, periodic intervals, but the study presented a different narrative. It turns out that periodic activation only reduces turbulence separation bubbles by 6.8 percent.</p>



<p>This meant that, by using AI to control the timing and frequency of these bursts, the research team was able to achieve a much higher reduction in turbulence.</p>



<p>"This study highlights how important AI is for scientific innovation," Mr. Vinuesa commented. "It offers exciting implications for aerodynamics, energy efficiency, and next-generation computational fluid dynamics."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-ai-in-aviation">The future of AI in aviation</h2>



<p>The success of such an AI-based method for the reduction of turbulence may only be the starting point for a complete revolution in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/electric-aircraft-batteries-pushing-the-boundaries-of-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aircraft technology</a>.</p>



<p>With AI integrated into aircraft systems, there may also be improvements on the way, with real-time predictions and prevention of turbulence radically improving both flight safety and passenger comfort.</p>



<p>By continuously learning from vast amounts of flight data, AI could help pilots and autopilot systems adjust in real-time to unexpected airflow disruptions, ensuring not only safer but also more fuel-efficient and cost-effective travel.</p>



<p>Beyond turbulence control, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neuromorphic-computing-where-ai-meets-human-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI</a> is already making waves in aviation through predictive maintenance, optimizing air traffic control operations, and enhancing cockpit automation for greater efficiency.</p>



<p>Researchers are also exploring AI-powered wing designs that could dynamically adjust their shape, mid-flight, to improve aerodynamic stability, which would further revolutionize how aircraft handle changing air conditions.</p>



<p>If these developments continue at the current pace, the dream of turbulence-free flights - once thought impossible - might not be all that far off.</p>



<p>For now, while air travel isn’t entirely free from the bumps and jolts of turbulence, AI is paving the way for a future where passengers can sit back, relax, and trust that technology is working behind the scenes to make their journey smoother, safer, and more predictable.</p>

This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-vulnerability-patterns"><strong>Genetic vulnerability patterns</strong></h2>



<p>Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-implications"><strong>Public health implications</strong></h2>



<p>These findings, published in <em><a href="https://www.neurology.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neurology</a></em>, underscore the critical importance of air quality regulations in urban planning. <p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet <em>Archaeopteris</em>: the first modern tree</h2>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-today-s-climate">Lessons for today's climate</h2>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
