<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>

<p>Acetaminophen is a common pain reliever that is also known as paracetamol. It is used for treating headaches, fevers, backaches, and other mild to moderate pains. </p>



<p>Many people take Tylenol without even realizing that its active ingredient is acetaminophen.</p>



<p>However, recent findings have raised concerns about the safety of acetaminophen, particularly its potential link to childhood ADHD - prompting questions about its use during pregnancy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-acetaminophen-and-adhd-risk">Acetaminophen and ADHD risk</h2>



<p>A new study from the Seattle Children’s Research Institute has produced evidence that suggests acetaminophen usage <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/acetaminophen-use-during-pregnancy-linked-to-language-delays/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">during pregnancy</a> could potentially increase the likelihood of offspring developing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).</p>



<p>Acetaminophen is among the most frequently prescribed drugs during pregnancy, with an estimated 41–70% usage reported in pregnant individuals in the United States, Europe, and Asia.</p>



<p>Despite being identified as low risk by regulatory agencies such as the FDA, research has indicated a potential link between exposure to acetaminophen during pregnancy and neurodevelopmental disorders, such as ADHD and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/autism-diagnoses-have-almost-tripled-in-the-us-over-the-past-ten-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">autism</a> spectrum disorder, noted the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-acetaminophen-needs-to-be-reevaluated">Acetaminophen needs to be reevaluated</h2>



<p>Study lead author Brennan Baker works in the lab of Dr. Sheela Sathyanarayana at <a href="https://www.uwmedicine.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UW Medicine</a>. </p>



<p>Baker pointed out that past studies had depended on the self-reported data from women and thus may not have reflected acetaminophen use accurately. He also noted that the drug's widespread use has long gone unquestioned.</p>



<p>“This medication was also approved decades ago and may need reevaluation by the FDA,” said Dr. Sathyanarayana. “Acetaminophen was never evaluated for fetal exposures in relation to long-term neurodevelopmental impacts.”</p>



<p>To get a clearer picture, the recent study involved tracking a group of 307 women between 2006 and 2011. Each of these expectant mothers agreed to provide blood samples, which allowed researchers to monitor acetaminophen biomarkers in their plasma.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-likelihood-of-adhd-diagnosis">Likelihood of ADHD diagnosis </h2>



<p>The results of the analysis showed that children born to mothers who used no acetaminophen throughout their pregnancy had a 9% prevalence of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/autism-and-adhd-disorders-directly-linked-amount-of-time-kids-spend-on-screens/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ADHD</a>. This rate increased to 18%, however, in the children of mothers who had used the drug.</p>



<p>Furthermore, the likelihood of an ADHD diagnosis was more than three times greater in children whose mothers carried acetaminophen biomarkers in their plasma.</p>



<p>Interestingly, the researchers identified a gender difference in these findings. They determined that a daughter's risk of developing ADHD was more than six times greater if the mother had taken acetaminophen during pregnancy. The correlation was less pronounced and insignificant among sons.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-research-is-needed">Further research is needed</h2>



<p>While this study does provide some insight, Baker warned against jumping to conclusions. Previous studies have provided inconsistent results.</p>



<p>For example, a Swedish study identified no correlation between mothers who took acetaminophen and the occurrence of ADHD in children, while a counter study in Norway did identify a correlation.</p>



<p>A key factor here is the data gathering process. The Swedish study was based on self-reported data, which showed that only 7% of pregnant women reported taking acetaminophen.</p>



<p>Baker noted that this factor may have resulted in underestimation of exposure. He emphasized the need for more detailed research.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-acetaminophen-use-during-pregnancy">Acetaminophen use during pregnancy</h2>



<p>What should a concerned expectant mother do? The best approach is open communication with a healthcare provider. Pregnant women should consult their doctor to determine a safe and appropriate dosage of any type of medication.</p>



<p>Furthermore, other classes of drugs, such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-drug-may-stop-migraines-in-their-tracks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">triptans</a>, are known to be effective and safe to treat the pain and migraines of expectant mothers during pregnancy.</p>



<p>While acetaminophen remains a crucial pain reliever, it is important to use it with caution and consider individual tolerance levels. As the medical community awaits further confirmation from global studies, regulatory authorities should update their guidelines accordingly.</p>



<p>"Medical societies and the FDA should update guidance on the use of acetaminophen as safety data emerges," said Dr. Sathyanarayana.</p>



<p>The discussion around acetaminophen use during <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pregnancy-may-speed-up-aging-in-women/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pregnancy</a> continues to evolve. Now more than ever, it's essential for expectant mothers to have open conversations with their doctors to make well-informed decisions for their baby's health.</p>

<p>Superbugs, or antibiotic-resistant bacteria, are among the most urgent public health dangers of our time. These bacteria mutate to resist even the most powerful antibiotics.</p>



<p>Recently at a hospital in Nevada, a female patient who was admitted with pneumonia died from sepsis and multiple organ failure. The culprit was a bacteria that had adapted to resist as many as 26 different antibiotics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-possible-solution">A possible solution </h2>



<p>Taking steps in the fight against these deadly pathogens, researchers at <a href="https://www.tamu.edu/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Texas A&amp;M</a> have discovered something intriguing. </p>



<p>The experts found that curcumin, the compound that gives <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/turmeric-supplements-provide-yet-another-health-benefit-according-to-study/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">turmeric</a> its bright yellow color, may be able to reverse antibiotic resistance.</p>



<p>The study revealed that curcumin, when presented to bacteria as a source of food and then triggered by light, causes destructive reactions within these microbes. These reactions eventually kill the bacteria.</p>



<p>The process effectively reduces the number of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-create-viruses-to-combat-antibiotic-resistant-bacteria/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">antibiotic-resistant</a> strains, consequently making conventional antibiotics useful again.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-curcumin-the-basics">Understanding curcumin - the basics</h2>



<p>As mentioned, curcumin is the powerful compound that gives turmeric its color and impressive health benefits. </p>



<p>It’s packed with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a popular natural remedy for everything from joint pain to brain health. </p>



<p>People have used turmeric in traditional medicine for centuries, but scientists have confirmed that curcumin is the real star. </p>



<p>It helps fight inflammation, which is linked to chronic diseases like arthritis, heart disease, and even Alzheimer’s.</p>



<p>Beyond reducing inflammation, curcumin may support gut health, improve mood, and even have anti-cancer properties. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-superbug-era">The superbug era</h2>



<p>Prior to the discovery of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antibiotics-for-childhood-infections-are-becoming-ineffective/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">antibiotics</a>, infectious diseases were the top cause of death and disability globally. The introduction of these wonder drugs added 23 years to the average human <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breathing-less-oxygen-could-extend-your-lifespan-by-50-or-more/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lifespan</a>.</p>



<p>While the development of new antibiotics has reached a plateau, resistant bacteria have surged - ushering in the superbug era.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antibiotic-resistant-superbugs-are-being-passed-from-pets-to-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Superbugs</a> include methicillin-resistant <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em> (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant <em>Enterococcus</em> (VRE), and certain drug-resistant strains of pneumonia-causing bacteria - all of which are notoriously difficult to treat.</p>



<p>Dr. Vanderlei Bagnato, a professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the senior author of the study, shared his insights.</p>



<p>“When bacteria start becoming resistant to conventional antibiotics, we have what we call an antibiotic catastrophe," said Dr. Bagnato.</p>



<p>"To overcome this challenge, we need alternative ways to either kill the superbugs or find a novel way to modify natural processes within the bacteria so that antibiotics start to act again." </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-battling-superbugs-with-curcumin">Battling superbugs with curcumin</h2>



<p>Natural diversity within a bacterial population results in varied behaviors, including differences in antibiotic resistance. </p>



<p>If certain strains can withstand antimicrobial drugs and continue to multiply, this diversity can contribute to increased resistance to treatment.</p>



<p>The primary goal of the Texas A&amp;M study was to control this bacterial diversity to manage resistance.</p>



<p>The research team applied a method known as photodynamic inactivation, which uses light and light-sensitive molecules known as photosensitizers to generate reactive oxygen species. </p>



<p>These species can annihilate microorganisms by disrupting their metabolic processes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-curcumin-and-antibiotics">Curcumin and antibiotics</h2>



<p>In their experiments, curcumin was used as the photosensitizer. The beauty of this approach is that curcumin also doubles as natural food for bacteria.</p>



<p>The team tested this method on strains of <em><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/common-microbe-found-to-be-the-culprit-behind-itch/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Staphylococcus aureus</a></em> that are resistant to antibiotics such as amoxicillin, erythromycin, and gentamicin.</p>



<p>The bacteria were subjected to multiple light exposure cycles. The team then compared the minimum antibiotic concentration needed to kill the bacteria following light exposure with those not exposed to light. </p>



<p>“When we have a mixed population of bacteria where some are resistant, we can use photodynamic inactivation to narrow the bacterial distribution, leaving behind strains that are more or less similar in their response to antibiotics. It’s much easier now to predict the precise antibiotic dose needed to remove the infection,” explained Dr. Bagnato.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fighting-against-resistance">Fighting against resistance</h2>



<p>The researchers are confident that photodynamic inactivation by curcumin would function well as a complement to antibiotics as a treatment for infections that are caused by drug-resistant bacteria.</p>



<p>“Photodynamic inactivation offers a cost-effective treatment option, which is crucial for reducing medical expenses not only in developing countries but also in the United States," said study co-author Dr. Vladislav Yakovlev. </p>



<p>"It also has potential applications in military medicine, where this technology could be used to treat battlefield wounds and prevent the development and spread of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antimicrobial-resistance-projected-to-kill-10-million-people-each-year/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">antimicrobial resistance</a>, a significant concern in combat situations."</p>



<p>The results of the study provide renewed hope in the fight against superbugs. By leveraging the potential of a common spice like turmeric, we may gain an advantage in this ongoing battle.</p>

<p>Human interactions shape daily life, from simple conversations to deep emotional exchanges. Understanding what happens in the brain during these moments is a growing area of research. </p>



<p>Scientists have long studied individual brain activity, but only recently have they begun examining how two brains become "in sync" during communication.</p>



<p>A new study brings this research closer to real life, moving beyond controlled laboratory settings. It explores how people’s emotions and language structures influence neural activity when they interact. </p>



<p>Conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://www.unitn.it/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Trento</a> and <a href="https://www.ntu.edu.sg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nanyang Technological University</a> in Singapore, the study provides fresh insights into human connection at the neural level. </p>



<p>The findings reveal that brain synchronization plays a crucial role in shaping social bonds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brains-sync-up-during-conversations">Brains "sync up" during conversations </h2>



<p>Traditional neuroscience studies often rely on artificial settings, where participants follow strict instructions. This research takes a different approach. By allowing natural conversations and spontaneous interactions, the scientists aimed to capture real-life social dynamics.</p>



<p>"For the first time, we have combined AI techniques to neuroimaging measurements obtained on two people at the same time," noted Alessandro Carollo, first author of the study.</p>



<p>"We have worked in a laboratory setting, but we tried to create less controlled situations than usual, so that each participating couple was free to invent a dialogue as well as to imagine giving each other a gift and being surprised to receive it."</p>



<p>The study involved 42 pairs of participants, totaling 84 individuals between the ages of 18 and 35. Each pair engaged in different interactive tasks, allowing researchers to analyze <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/subtle-dna-changes-shaped-human-brain-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain activity</a> under various conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brains-sync-in-the-prefrontal-cortex">Brains sync in the prefrontal cortex</h2>



<p>Communication is more than just words. It involves emotions, gestures, and an intricate exchange of signals between people. The researchers found that brain activity becomes synchronized when two individuals interact, particularly in the prefrontal cortex, which is associated with higher cognitive functions.</p>



<p>"We combined artificial intelligence techniques with the most advanced brain imaging technology to study how emotions and the structure of language influence brain activity in interactions," noted Gianluca Esposito, one of the corresponding authors.</p>



<p>"This study reveals that, when two people interact, their brain activity is synchronized, especially in the prefrontal cortex. Emotional content and the structure of language are connected to this neural synchrony."</p>



<p>By linking emotional tone and language structure to neural synchronization, the researchers provided strong evidence that the way people communicate directly affects their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-time-and-space-interact-in-the-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain activity</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-artificial-intelligence-and-neuroimaging">Artificial intelligence and neuroimaging</h2>



<p>To analyze interactions, the researchers used artificial intelligence to process dialogue transcripts. </p>



<p>Every conversation was first transcribed by hand, then AI techniques helped extract emotional and linguistic patterns. This allowed the team to quantify the impact of different communication styles on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-brain-literally-changes-based-on-daily-activities-and-lifestyle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain function</a>.</p>



<p>For neuroimaging, they relied on functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), a technique that measures changes in blood oxygen levels in the brain. fNIRS is non-invasive, portable, and ideal for studying real-time interactions between two individuals. </p>



<p>Unlike traditional brain imaging techniques, it allows participants to move and speak naturally.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-social-interactions">Studying social interactions</h2>



<p>Studying real-world conversations requires methods that do not interfere with natural behavior. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy provides an effective solution by allowing researchers to measure <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/male-and-female-brains-are-wired-completely-differently/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain activity</a> without restricting movement.</p>



<p>"It is an easy-to-carry and lightweight technique: it only takes a small box with a pair of caps and their cables. Then you plug it into a laptop computer and that is all you need to study human interactions," noted Carollo.</p>



<p>By making neuroimaging more accessible, this technique paves the way for further research outside laboratory settings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-the-lab-to-everyday-life">From the lab to everyday life</h2>



<p>One of the study’s main goals was to take brain research beyond the controlled environment of a lab. Real-life interactions are complex, and understanding them requires studying people in natural settings. </p>



<p>The findings suggest that brain synchronization is a fundamental part of human connection, influencing how people respond to each other in various social situations.</p>



<p>"The best approach seems to be the transdisciplinary one, which integrates emotional content and semantic/syntactic information. The results obtained on neuronal synchronization have a number of interesting implications," said Esposito.</p>

<p>Birds have long been symbols of freedom and resilience, soaring through the skies and thriving in diverse environments. From the icy tundras to tropical rainforests, birds have developed survival strategies that allow them to endure the challenges of their surroundings. </p>



<p>Some species live at a rapid pace, reproducing as quickly as possible before their short lives end. Others take a slower approach, prioritizing longevity over frequent reproduction. </p>



<p>These strategies have evolved over millions of years, but the accelerating impacts of climate change could alter the balance.</p>



<p>A recent study led by Michigan State University (<a href="https://msu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MSU</a>) scientists explores how environmental conditions shape bird behavior. By analyzing nearly 7,500 non-migratory species, the researchers uncovered patterns that link climate variability to survival choices.</p>



<p>The study raises important questions about how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-evolution-timeline-pushed-back-20-million-years-by-baminornis-zhenghensis-discovery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birds</a> will navigate a future defined by rising global temperatures and unpredictable weather patterns.</p>

<p>Every bird species faces unique challenges depending on where it lives. In regions with extreme seasonal fluctuations, birds must act fast to ensure their lineage continues. </p>



<p>These species, including finches and cardinals, reproduce quickly, placing more energy into raising offspring than into their own long-term survival. Their strategy relies on numbers - if enough young birds make it to adulthood, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-flightless-birds-are-more-intelligent-than-we-realized/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> persists despite high mortality rates.</p>



<p>On the other hand, birds that inhabit areas with gradual, long-term climate variations tend to play a different game. These species, such as the sulfur-crested cockatoo, prioritize endurance. </p>



<p>They live longer, often skipping breeding during harsh years, knowing they will have opportunities to reproduce when conditions improve. This approach allows them to hedge their bets, ensuring that their offspring have a better chance of survival.</p>



<p>Study lead author Casey Youngflesh is a former postdoctoral researcher in MSU’s Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior Program.</p>



<p>“A lot of factors drive key components of life history,” said Youngflesh. “We wanted to synthesize these global data resources to see what environmental factors shape biodiversity.”</p>

<p>They cannot afford to wait for better conditions because the future remains uncertain. These birds live by a philosophy of seizing the moment, ensuring their genetic legacy continues despite the risks.</p>



<p>Conversely, birds facing climate changes that unfold over decades or centuries adapt in a more measured way. They rely on longevity as their advantage, opting to survive tough periods rather than gamble on uncertain reproduction. </p>



<p>This trade-off highlights the diversity of evolutionary strategies in response to environmental challenges.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-alarming-pace-of-climate-change">Alarming pace of climate change </h2>



<p>Although long-lived birds can withstand bad years by delaying reproduction, they also face a significant drawback. Their ability to adapt is slower than that of short-lived <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earliest-modern-bird-lived-in-antarctica-69-million-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a>. </p>



<p>Climate change is happening at an unprecedented pace, raising concerns about whether these survival strategies of birds will remain effective.</p>



<p>“If you only live a couple years, one bad year isn’t a big problem,” Youngflesh said. “But if you have two or more bad years in a row, you are in trouble. In variable, unpredictable environments, it may pay to live a long time.”</p>



<p>If extreme weather events become more frequent and erratic, even birds with historically successful strategies may struggle to keep up. The question remains: will evolution be fast enough to match the speed of environmental change?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-patterns-across-ecosystems">Patterns across ecosystems</h2>



<p>The study’s findings extend beyond any single region, revealing broad trends across different ecosystems. </p>



<p>Birds in boreal forests, grasslands, and tropical jungles all show similar responses to climate variability. Whether in dense forests or open plains, the balance between risk-taking and patience plays a crucial role in shaping survival.</p>



<p>Phoebe Zarnetske of the director of the Institute for Biodiversity, Ecology, Evolution, &amp; Macrosystems (<a href="http://Institute for Biodiversity, Ecology, Evolution, &amp; Macrosystems (IBEEM)" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IBEEM</a>) at MSU. She emphasized the importance of these global patterns.</p>



<p>“This study provides important insights about the roles that climate change and variability have in shaping the patterns of life on Earth,” said Zarnetske, noting it was a prime mission behind IBEEM’s funding of the study.</p>



<p>“Importantly, an interdisciplinary approach - combining insights from ecology and climate science - was key to uncovering how organisms respond to climate variability.”</p>



<p>The research raises new questions about how different bird populations will survive in the future. If some species struggle to adapt, their ecosystems could undergo significant shifts, altering food webs and interactions among species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-extreme-weather-events">Role of extreme weather events</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the study revealed that precipitation did not play a major role in determining birds’ survival strategies. However, co-author and climate scientist Lala Kounta pointed out that more extreme weather events, such as heatwaves and droughts, could add new pressures that researchers need to explore further.</p>



<p>“You have to understand these foundational theories before you can predict how things are going to change,” said IBEEM data scientist Kelly Kaspar. </p>



<p>“Seeing through all the noise and finding patterns is critical, and this has been a rare opportunity to work with different disciplines – I’m in fisheries and wildlife, others are in integrated biology, geography, climate studies. There’s a lot of different expertise here.”</p>



<p>By integrating data from various fields, researchers can gain a clearer picture of how climate affects biodiversity on a global scale.</p>

<p>Parenting is a demanding journey filled with emotional highs and lows, along with sleepless nights. Some believe that the stress of parenting can take a toll on the brain, leading to mental exhaustion over time.</p>



<p>However, recent research offers a new perspective, revealing that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-paternity-leave-changes-parenting-dynamics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">parenting</a> might actually have a bright side – it may help guard our brains against certain aging effects.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-parenting-and-brain-health">Parenting and brain health</h2>



<p>Research conducted by scientists from Rutgers Health and <a href="https://www.yale.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yale University</a> has uncovered that parents exhibit unique changes in brain connectivity, which seem to amplify with each additional child.</p>



<p>Interestingly, these changes are not just the results of pregnancy. Both mothers and fathers experience these benefits, thereby implying that parenting itself could influence these alterations.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stronger-brain-connectivity">Stronger brain connectivity </h2>



<p>This enlightening study, which was published in the <em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</em>, relied on brain scans and family histories collected from the UK Biobank. </p>



<p>This large biomedical databank offered valuable insights into the communication channels between different brain regions. </p>



<p>Focusing on areas responsible for movement, sensation, and social connection, the researchers found that parents, especially those with more children, had stronger connectivity in these crucial brain networks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-parenting-and-brain-communication">Parenting and brain communication</h2>



<p>A common consequence of aging is the reduced communication between different brain regions. This decline can negatively impact movement, sensory perception, and cognitive abilities. </p>



<p>However, this study indicates that parenting can counter these effects. The more children, the stronger the connectivity appeared to be in parents’ brains.</p>



<p>“We're seeing a widespread pattern of functional alterations, where a higher number of children parented is associated with increased functional connectivity across somatosensory and motor networks,” explained Professor Holmes.</p>



<p>This suggests that the constant physical and mental engagement required by parenting could fortify brain connections over time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-children-greater-brain-benefits">More children, greater brain benefits?</h2>



<p>Findings from this study challenge the notion that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/parents-who-use-humor-have-better-relationships-with-their-children/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">parenting</a> primarily leads to exhaustion and cognitive strain. </p>



<p>Instead, it suggests that the experience of parenting might gradually build up brain health benefits. With each additional child, parents seem to experience greater changes in brain connectivity.</p>



<p>“The caregiving environment, rather than pregnancy alone, appears important since we see these effects in both mothers and fathers,” noted Professor Holmes. This indicates that the mental and physical demands of parenting are likely driving these changes in brain connectivity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-social-interaction-influences-brain-health">Social interaction influences brain health</h2>



<p>Participants in the study who were <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/parent-children-relationships-are-key-to-lifelong-well-being/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">parents</a> also exhibited higher levels of social connection. </p>



<p>They were observed to have more expansive social networks compared to non-parents, and greater frequency of family visits. Social engagement is known to positively impact brain health, as it promotes mental stimulation and emotional wellness.</p>



<p>However, it is important to consider the study's limitations, as the participants were primarily residents of the United Kingdom, suggesting the results may not be universally applicable.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-health-and-social-support">Brain health and social support</h2>



<p>Emerging from this study is the implication that such brain health benefits are not exclusive to those who have children. The importance of social support and interpersonal connections comes to the fore. </p>



<p>“If what we're picking up is a relationship between enhanced social interactions and social support that comes about through having increased numbers of children in your life, then that means that we could tap into those same processes even if individuals don't have a social support network currently,” said Professor Holmes.</p>



<p>This provides an encouraging message for people who do not have children. They could potentially experience similar benefits by participating in activities that involve caregiving, mentorship, or fostering close social bonds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-parenting-may-be-mentally-enriching">Parenting may be mentally enriching</h2>



<p>This remarkable study dispels the belief that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/parents-treat-their-children-differently-but-do-they-have-a-favorite/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">parenting</a> is a primary source of stress. Instead, it highlights parenting as a dynamic experience that engages individuals mentally, physically, and emotionally. </p>



<p>Despite the undeniable challenges linked to parenting, it appears that the long-term benefits could include a more active and connected brain.</p>



<p>This research opens the door to new dialogues about how social engagement, caregiving, and mental stimulation can influence brain health as we age. </p>



<p>As further research uncovers more about the ways parenting affects brain health, it's clear that the journey of raising children offers a pathway towards maintaining a resilient brain.</p>

<p>Autophagy is the body’s cellular recycling system. It is a natural process where cells destroy themselves in order to recycle old, damaged or abnormal parts. Autophagy plays a crucial role in protecting our cells from environmental damage. </p>



<p>Every day, our cells are bombarded with DNA-damaging agents, such as ultraviolet rays, radiation, toxins, and chemicals. These factors can cause harm to our cells to the extent that they cease to function effectively.</p>



<p>In females, this unrelenting attack can be catastrophic as it disrupts the quality of egg cells and may lead to infertility, miscarriage, birth defects, and genetic diseases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-autophagy-and-reproductive-health">Autophagy and reproductive health</h2>



<p>Identifying the significance of this protective mechanism, researchers at the <a href="https://missouri.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Missouri</a> investigated how autophagy influences reproductive health.</p>



<p>Ahmed Balboula is an assistant professor in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR).</p>



<p>Professor Balboula and his team sought to establish how autophagy - often referred to as the unsung hero of cellular biology - impacts <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stress-may-be-linked-to-female-fertility-issues/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">female fertility</a> and the battle against DNA damage.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-autophagy-the-cell-s-superhero">Autophagy: The cell's superhero</h2>



<p>Autophagy is a lesser-known but important process that assists in the maintenance of cellular health. The process involves the elimination of damaged cell parts, and the recycling of useful components, which helps maintaining cellular balance and function.</p>



<p>Autophagy is essential for stress response, energy balance, and the prevention of cell damage - including the maintenance of reproductive cells.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-natural-defense-system">A natural defense system</h2>



<p>One of the body's natural defense mechanisms, autophagy helps keep biological systems operational. However, its role in female egg health is what piqued Professor Balboula's interest.</p>



<p>The researchers found that, under circumstances of moderate to severe <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dna-damage-can-persist-for-years-increasing-cancer-risks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DNA damage</a> (more common in older women), autophagy activity decreases in female eggs.</p>



<p>"When autophagy activity decreases in DNA-damaged eggs or in maternally aged eggs, which have moderate DNA damage, there is an increased risk for aneuploidy," noted Balboula.</p>



<p>Aneuploidy refers to an abnormal number of chromosomes in a cell. This disorder leads to genetic causes of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/horse-miscarriages-offer-insights-into-human-pregnancy-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">miscarriage</a> and congenital birth defects, including Down syndrome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-autophagy-to-the-rescue">Autophagy to the rescue</h2>



<p>The researchers didn't just identify a problem; they also uncovered a potential solution.</p>



<p>They discovered that stimulating the process of autophagy in female eggs might improve not only the quality of these eggs but also reduce DNA damage and abnormal chromosome numbers. </p>



<p>Professor Balboula hopes that the findings could spark new research directions for enhancing female egg quality and, consequently improving <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reproductive-health-is-impacted-by-geographic-location/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reproductive health</a> for both humans and animals.</p>



<p>"The deactivation of autophagy that we found is likely just one of many underlying mechanisms contributing to aneuploidy," said Balboula. "Going forward, I will continue to explore other underlying mechanisms contributing to poor egg quality to ultimately further efforts to improve the quality of female eggs."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reproductive-biology-research">Reproductive biology research </h2>



<p>Professor Balboula, who moved from the University of Cambridge to Mizzou in 2019, was drawn by the university's reputation as a powerhouse in reproductive biology research.</p>



<p>“I knew this was the place to enhance my career,” he said. “The collaborators, resources, and research infrastructure here at Mizzou, especially within CAFNR, the Division of Animal Sciences, and the NextGen Precision Health building, help us take our research to the next level, and we are just getting started.”</p>



<p>The research demonstrates how scientists are pushing the boundaries to improve our health, and offers a glimpse into what might be in store for the future of women's reproductive health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-fertility-treatment">The future of fertility treatment </h2>



<p>While Balboula and his colleagues have revealed a vital connection between autophagy and egg quality, this research is only the tip of the iceberg. </p>



<p>Understanding how cellular maintenance functions affect fertility might unlock new possibilities for novel treatments.</p>



<p>Can autophagy be used to boost reproductive health? Could this knowledge lead to age-related fertility loss-prevention breakthroughs?</p>



<p>With advancing technology, non-invasive treatments or dietary and lifestyle interventions to stimulate autophagy may soon become a reality.</p>



<p>In the meantime, Professor Balboula’s research is a promising leap toward enhancing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-fertility-rates-are-quickly-declining-and-little-is-being-done-about-it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fertility</a> success, as well as our understanding of cellular resilience.</p>

<p>For thousands of years, algae have lived on the surface of the ice, blooming as the snow recedes. These tiny organisms seem harmless, almost invisible, yet their presence plays a surprising role in shaping the fate of the Greenland Ice Sheet. </p>



<p>As the world warms, these algae may colonize larger areas, speeding up ice loss and altering the delicate balance of the Arctic.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-algae-in-ice-melt">Role of algae in ice melt</h2>



<p>Algae on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-ice-sheet-jakobshavn-glacier-seen-melting-in-real-time-from-earth-orbit/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland Ice Sheet</a> contain brown pigments. When sunlight strikes the surface, bright ice reflects much of it back into space, keeping the ice cold. </p>



<p>But when the ice is dark due to algal growth, it absorbs more heat and melts at a faster rate.</p>



<p>This process has been recognized for some time, but researchers believed that the algae’s spread was limited by the lack of nutrients in the harsh, frozen environment. </p>



<p>The ice desert was thought to be too barren to sustain widespread growth. That assumption has now been turned on its head.</p>



<p>New findings, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, suggest that these algae require very few nutrients to survive. </p>



<p>More significantly, they can store and conserve energy, which allows them to spread more extensively than <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-ice-sheet-discovery-transforms-sea-level-predictions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">previous expectations</a>.</p>



<p>If this proves correct, ice darkening could happen on a much larger scale in future, thus accelerating the melting of Greenland’s ice.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-ice-algae">Understanding ice algae</h2>



<p>Laura Halbach, who recently earned her Ph.D. at <a href="https://international.au.dk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aarhus University</a>, has played a crucial role in uncovering this surprising phenomenon. </p>



<p>Now a postdoctoral researcher at the <a href="https://www.mpg.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute</a> in Bremen, she continues her work studying Arctic ecosystems and their hidden complexities.</p>



<p>"My main goal with the trip to Greenland was to understand the mechanisms of the algae bloom formations," Halbach explained. </p>



<p>"With new methods, I was able, as the first researcher ever, to measure the activity of single algae cells from the Greenland Ice Sheet. This led to the discovery of their ability to live off very few nutrients and to store up energy."</p>



<p>These findings reshape what scientists thought they knew about microbial life on ice. What was once considered a largely lifeless landscape now appears to host a thriving and resilient ecosystem.</p>

<p>They appear brownish due to their pigments and can be found not just in Greenland but also in high-altitude and high-latitude ice regions worldwide. </p>



<p>The Alps, the Himalayas, and Alaskan glaciers all host similar algal species.</p>



<p>Like plants, these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-microalgae-show-photosynthesis-is-possible-in-near-darkness/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">algae perform photosynthesis</a>, producing oxygen and organic molecules. They rely on sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide, along with small amounts of essential nutrients like phosphorus, nitrogen, and carbon.</p>



<p>During spring and summer, they bloom, forming dark patches across the ice. The larger the bloom, the more heat the ice absorbs, creating a cycle where melting fuels even more algal growth. </p>



<p>Understanding how they function is key to predicting their long-term impact on the Arctic.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-frozen-desert-full-of-life">A frozen desert full of life</h2>



<p>That perception that ice sheets are devoid of life started to change in 2020 when researchers from Aarhus University and GFZ Helmholtz Center for Geosciences in Germany began their expeditions into the Arctic.</p>



<p>They found that the expanses of frozen water teemed with microscopic life, including algae, bacteria, fungi, and even viruses, all coexisting and forming a complex and active ecosystem.</p>



<p>But this discovery came with challenges. When scientists collected ice samples, they found not just algae but entire microbial communities. </p>



<p>Studying algae in isolation became nearly impossible. To understand their particular role in the ecosystem, researchers needed a new approach.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-new-way-to-study-algae">A new way to study algae</h2>



<p>Laura Halbach wanted to pinpoint exactly how ice algae functioned in their environment. But isolating them from their microbial neighbors was difficult. </p>



<p>Traditional methods involved scraping darkened ice and placing samples into petri dishes, where entire ecosystems would be present.</p>



<p>"If you melt a piece of the surface ice, you see these dark-pigmented algae. But there are many organisms in the sample, including snow-algae, other eukaryotic algae, bacteria, and fungi," she explained.</p>



<p>To solve this, Halbach and her team introduced marked nutrients into the ecosystem. These nutrients contained isotopic traces detectable with a powerful machine called a mass spectrometer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nutrient-flow-in-ice-algae">Nutrient Flow in ice algae</h2>



<p>"You could say that we kind of labeled the food we gave them. This enabled us to see who ate what. Combined with a machine called SIMS, which is extremely precise, we were able to measure the nutrient uptake of single cells," says Halbach.</p>



<p>The results were striking. The algae efficiently absorbed the small amounts of nutrients available, proving far more resourceful than scientists had expected. </p>



<p>"They are very efficient in taking up the limited nutrients on the ice. Furthermore, we discovered that they have the capability of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soil-nutrient-loss-due-to-heavy-rainfall-threatens-agriculture/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">storing phosphorus</a>, which is crucial for their metabolism."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-does-phosphorus-come-from">Where does phosphorus come from?</h2>



<p>Phosphorus is rare on the ice sheet, which raises questions about where the algae acquire it.</p>



<p>Some researchers suggest that it originates from local rock formations that are rich in phosphorus-bearing minerals. </p>



<p>As erosion grinds these rocks into dust, the wind scatters the nutrients across the ice, making them available to the algae.</p>



<p>Because the algae can store phosphorus, they are not entirely dependent on immediate nutrient availability. This could allow them to spread into new areas as more ice becomes exposed each year.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-expanding-ice-algae-colonization">Expanding ice algae colonization</h2>



<p>With climate change causing the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenlands-melting-icebergs-may-not-be-threat-to-ocean-currents-amoc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland Ice Sheet</a> to melt earlier each year, more ice is being exposed to the Sun. </p>



<p>Areas that once remained buried under thick layers of snow are now vulnerable to colonization by algae.</p>



<p>"New ice is being exposed on Greenland every year because the snow melts earlier and earlier. There used to be a thick snow cover all year round, but now large new areas of ice are being exposed to the Sun," Halbach noted.</p>



<p>"This opens up these areas for the algae to colonize, and as they can live on very limited amounts of nutrients, it might happen sooner than later."</p>



<p>This shift could significantly alter how scientists predict ice loss in the Arctic. If algae spread to newly exposed ice, they will darken even more of the surface, accelerating the melting process beyond previous estimates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-climate-models">Implications for climate models</h2>



<p>Laura Halbach’s research offers crucial insights into the role of algae in ice loss. Currently, most climate models do not account for microbial life in their calculations. </p>



<p>This gap means that predictions about Greenland’s ice loss - and its effects on global sea levels - may be underestimating the true impact.</p>



<p>If algae colonization continues to expand, its contribution to ice melt will need to be factored into climate projections. </p>



<p>The work of Halbach and her team could help refine these models, leading to more accurate forecasts for the Arctic’s future.</p>

Algae that thrives on ice plays an unexpected role in glacier melting

<p>Many people feel an automatic jolt of fear when they sense a sudden movement overhead. While this reaction can be a lifesaver in certain situations, it can also cause unnecessary distress.</p>



<p>Scientists have studied these swift responses to identify how the brain tells us to duck for cover. A recent study focused on mice reveals new clues about the links between primal fear <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-brains-turn-intense-stress-into-constant-fear/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">circuits</a> and learned safety.</p>



<p>"Fast instinctive responses to environmental stimuli can be crucial for survival but are not always optimal," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>"Animals can adapt their behavior and suppress instinctive reactions, but the neural pathways mediating such ethologically relevant forms of learning remain unclear."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-learning-to-suppress-fear">Learning to suppress fear </h2>



<p>Study co-author Sara Mederos is a neuroscientist at University College London's <a href="https://www.sainsburywellcome.org/web/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sainsbury Wellcome Center</a>.</p>



<p>“We were interested in trying to describe the mechanisms from behavior to the molecular level that could drive this learning to suppress fear,” said Mederos.</p>



<p>The researchers analyzed activity in the ventrolateral geniculate nucleus (vLGN), a structure deep in the brain that processes visual messages for rapid defensive behavior. </p>



<p>The experts found that with repeated proof of safety, the mice began ignoring an overhead shadow that previously caused them to run for cover.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-the-script-of-fear">Changing the script of fear</h2>



<p>The researchers used optogenetics, a method for activating or silencing precise sets of neurons with light, to see how the higher visual cortex and lower regions interact. </p>



<p>Once the animals recognized the threat was a false alarm, the visual cortex relinquished control.</p>



<p>Scientists suggest that such top-down signaling reveals how the mind can block out reflexes once it learns a threat is harmless. This might open doors for understanding problems like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gut-microbes-have-an-unexpected-link-to-anxiety/">anxiety</a>, which affects over 40 million adults in the United States.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-the-visual-cortex">The role of the visual cortex</h2>



<p>Early phases of learning hinged on activity in the higher visual areas that interpret what the eyes see. Mice unable to engage these cortical zones kept fleeing from the looming stimulus and missed the memo that it was safe.</p>



<p>Once the mice registered the new information, further reliance on the visual cortex dropped. This shift spotlighted the vLGN as the area responsible for holding on to the updated response, ensuring that learned calm stayed in place.</p>



<p>Connections in deeper brain structures can adapt swiftly and recalibrate how sensory input is interpreted. This study identified a role for endocannabinoid signals that appeared to tune neuron-to-neuron communication in the vLGN.</p>



<p>Adjusting the strength of those synapses helped the mice replace hardwired panic with a calmer take on the overhead movement. Once that rewiring took hold, fear responses dropped even if the usual triggers were present.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-neural-circuits-and-fear-regulation">Neural circuits and fear regulation</h2>



<p>The findings represent a significant advancement in understanding how the brain suppresses fear.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"This study provides valuable insights into the neural circuits involved in fear regulation," noted Felicity Nelson, a science journalist reporting on the research.</p>



<p>Nelson emphasized that while the research offers promising avenues for developing treatments for anxiety disorders, translating these findings from mice to humans will require further investigation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-practical-solutions-for-human-anxiety">Practical solutions for human anxiety</h2>



<p>Researchers believe that unlocking these subcortical changes in mice could inform interventions for conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder. </p>



<p>Estimates from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs suggest that about six percent of Americans will experience PTSD during their lifetimes.</p>



<p>Some forms of therapy already emphasize facing and reinterpreting triggers to reduce <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spiders-heights-or-public-speaking-each-fear-has-a-unique-place-in-the-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fear responses</a>. Tapping into the specific circuits that drive these shifts might improve how well those interventions work and how fast patients see benefits.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-addressing-fear-related-disorders">Addressing fear-related disorders </h2>



<p>Scientists plan to refine methods such as focused ultrasound to stimulate or tone down specific brain cells without surgery. They want to see if humans can similarly learn to block out panic responses when they see no real danger.</p>



<p>“If we can get the same effects, then this could become an idea that can potentially lead to pre-clinical work,” said Mederos. </p>



<p>Many hope this approach might open new avenues to address fear-related disorders in clinical settings.</p>

Scientists discover a new way to suppress fear

<p>Aspartame is a sugar substitute that appears in diet sodas, sugar-free snacks, and countless low-calorie treats. Some people see it as a helpful way to reduce sugar intake and limit weight gain.</p>



<p>Researchers, however, have noticed signals that this sweetener might impact vascular <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/vitamin-helps-prevent-cataracts-and-maintain-eye-health/">health</a>. In a new investigation, scientists explored how aspartame might contribute to fatty plaque buildup in blood vessels through changes in insulin release.</p>



<p>The research was led by Yihai Cao, a professor at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden who studies <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/chronic-disease/about/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chronic diseases</a>.</p>



<p>“One of my students was sipping on this sugar-free drink, and I said, ‘Why don’t you look into that?’” recalled Professor Cao.</p>



<p>The team set out to test the effect of aspartame on inflammation linked to cardiovascular function.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-effects-of-aspartame">Health effects of aspartame </h2>



<p>The scientists provided mice with a diet containing 0.15% aspartame for about 12 weeks. This is roughly equivalent to drinking three cans of diet soda daily for an adult in the United States.</p>



<p>The animals showed more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/omega-3-and-omega-6-fatty-acids-may-reduce-cancer-risk/">fatty deposits</a> in their arteries than mice that did not consume the sweetener. These plaques can narrow blood vessels and intensify the likelihood of heart attacks or strokes over time.</p>



<p>Aspartame is about 200 times sweeter than regular sugar, so it can trick sweet-sensing cells in the mouth and digestive system. This causes a boost in insulin secretion that may be higher than typical responses seen with sugar.</p>



<p>The researchers noticed that the aspartame-fed mice displayed a noticeable rise in insulin levels soon after they consumed the sweetener. This extra insulin surge seemed to kick off events that led to more plaque development and elevated artery inflammation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-buildup-of-immune-cells">Buildup of immune cells</h2>



<p>Excess insulin can send signals that promote the buildup of cholesterol and immune cells in the blood vessel walls. Once these cells get stuck, they make arterial inflammation worse.</p>



<p>The researchers found a particular immune messenger called CX3CL1 that played a big part in trapping these immune cells. </p>



<p>“Because blood flow through the artery is strong and robust, most chemicals would be quickly washed away as the heart pumps, surprisingly, not CX3CL1,” noted Professor Cao. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pinpointing-the-immune-interaction">Pinpointing the immune interaction</h2>



<p>CX3CL1 remained attached to the vessel walls, where it acted like a magnet for circulating immune cells. When those cells got caught, they compounded the fatty plaques and contributed to harmful changes in the arterial lining.</p>



<p>Aspartame-stimulated insulin release appeared to turn on this sticky CX3CL1 response. </p>



<p>By blocking the receptor for CX3CL1 in some of the mice, the team saw that plaque formation stayed under control.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-blood-vessel-inflammation">Blood vessel inflammation </h2>



<p>Some people assume that sugar-free items are automatically better for weight control or overall health. Yet this study hints that aspartame may influence blood vessel inflammation in ways worth noticing.</p>



<p>“Artificial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/artificial-sweetener-erythritol-sugar-substitute-linked-to-blood-clots-heart-disease/">sweeteners</a> have penetrated almost all kinds of food, so we have to know the long-term health impact,” said Professor Cao. </p>



<p>His team plans to continue studying aspartame and other sweeteners to see if humans experience these effects and to uncover how these products fit into a balanced diet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-should-aspartame-be-avoided">Should aspartame be avoided?</h2>



<p>Many questions remain about how different sweeteners might affect individuals with metabolic issues. </p>



<p>More trials will be needed to see if there are safe thresholds for aspartame use or if certain at-risk groups should avoid the sweetener entirely.</p>



<p>The study also suggests that CX3CL1 could be a potential target for drugs aimed at reducing <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/16753-atherosclerosis-arterial-disease" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atherosclerosis</a>. This immune messenger is linked to other conditions driven by inflammation, such as arthritis and diabetes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-into-aspartame">Future research into aspartame </h2>



<p>Investigators may consider approaches that gauge aspartame’s impact on blood sugar levels across various populations, including those with prediabetes and insulin resistance. </p>



<p>Since insulin regulation is complex, new findings could reveal nuances that differ from person to person.</p>



<p>While the current findings revolve around animal models, scientists aim to expand the research to see if the same issues apply in humans. </p>



<p>Experts may examine real-life consumption patterns, genetic differences, and how other factors (like body weight or gut bacteria) might modify the effects of artificial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/artificial-sweeteners-linked-to-higher-risk-of-depression/">sweeteners</a>.</p>

<p>A simple blood test that identifies how much each of our organs has aged could help detect the likelihood of developing conditions such as heart disease or lung cancer - decades in advance.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By revealing which organs are aging more rapidly than expected, this approach offers a possible route to preventing a wide range of illnesses before they take hold.</p>



<p>In a new study, researchers discovered that varying rates of organ aging correlate strongly with subsequent health outcomes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings demonstrate how “<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-cancer-rates-in-young-adults-linked-to-accelerated-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">accelerated aging</a>” in one organ can predict an increased risk not only of diseases specific to that organ but also a host of conditions elsewhere in the body.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organs-age-at-different-rates">Organs age at different rates </h2>



<p>The project was led by a team including scientists from <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University College London</a> (UCL), Stanford University, <a href="https://www.inserm.fr/en/home/">Inserm</a>, and the University of Helsinki. The researchers analyzed data from the <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/epidemiology-health-care/research/epidemiology-and-public-health/research/whitehall-ii#:~:text=Whitehall%20II%20%2D%20also%20known%20as,from%20the%20British%20Civil%20Service." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">British Whitehall II study</a>, a long-running cohort investigation overseen by Professor Mika Kivimaki.</p>



<p>“Our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-migrate-from-the-gut-to-other-organs/">organs</a> function as an integrated system, but they can age at different rates. Aging in particular organs can contribute to numerous aging-related diseases, so it’s important for us to take care of all aspects of our health,” said Kivimaki, the study’s lead author.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We found that a quick and easy blood test can identify whether a specific organ is aging faster than expected. In years to come, blood tests like this could play a crucial role in preventing numerous diseases.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-measuring-gaps-in-organ-aging">Measuring gaps in organ aging</h2>



<p>In the late 1990s, blood samples were collected from more than 6,200 individuals, all middle-aged adults at the time.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The scientists used these samples to calculate the biological age of nine different organs - namely the heart, blood vessels, liver, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/covid-19-lockdowns-weakened-our-immune-systems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">immune system</a>, pancreas, kidneys, lungs, intestines, and the brain - as well as an overall measure for the entire body.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They compared each organ’s biological age to a person’s chronological age, uncovering significant disparities within the same individual. Some organs aged at a relatively slow pace, while others appeared far older than expected.</p>



<p>After measuring these age “gaps,” the researchers tracked each participant’s health status for two decades using national medical registries.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By the close of the follow-up period, participants were aged between 65 and 89, and many had experienced at least one of the age-related conditions considered in the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-predicting-disease-over-decades">Predicting disease over decades</h2>



<p>The analysis revealed that individuals whose organs showed rapid aging were more susceptible to 30 different illnesses, including <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/covid-19-lockdowns-weakened-our-immune-systems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, respiratory infections, and various cancers.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A heart that aged unusually fast predicted elevated odds of heart conditions, whereas accelerated aging in the lungs was linked to a higher risk of lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and respiratory infections.</p>



<p>Interestingly, participants with an immune system that aged more rapidly than normal proved to have the greatest likelihood of developing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/preventing-dementia-scientists-say-three-factors-matter-most/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dementia</a>, surpassing those with a more quickly aging brain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The investigators connect this result to existing evidence linking susceptibility to severe infections with a higher dementia risk down the line, suggesting that inflammatory activity may drive or exacerbate neurodegenerative processes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-close-coordination-among-organs">Close coordination among organs</h2>



<p>Another noteworthy finding highlighted the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/astronauts-kidneys-may-not-survive-a-roundtrip-to-mars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">kidneys</a>. People whose kidney age outpaced expectations tended to confront a heightened risk of vascular disease, liver disease, and type 2 diabetes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>At the same time, accelerated aging in nearly any organ predicted a greater chance of suffering kidney damage in the future.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to the authors, these patterns demonstrate the tight coordination among our organs, wherein malfunction in one system can have wide-ranging effects on others.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-catching-the-onset-of-organ-aging-nbsp">Catching the onset of organ aging&nbsp;</h2>



<p>For many years, testing blood biomarkers separately was too expensive to be practical for large-scale preventive strategies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, recent advances in proteomic technologies now allow scientists to examine thousands of proteins simultaneously from a single sample, supplying fresh insight into how quickly a specific organ might be aging.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Blood protein levels respond to factors such as environment, lifestyle, disease, and medications, making them valuable indicators of a person’s physiological state over time.</p>



<p>“I believe that in the future of healthcare, the prevention of age-related diseases could begin much earlier, prioritizing those who would benefit most and tailoring interventions to individual risk profiles,” Kivimaki explained.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By catching the onset of accelerated aging in a particular organ, healthcare providers can focus on preventing future problems.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Diet changes, exercise programs, or even targeted medical interventions could slow or reverse damage in the system that shows the most alarm.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-new-approach-to-disease-prevention">A new approach to disease prevention</h2>



<p>Because a rapidly aging organ often signals potential trouble elsewhere, the study endorses a more holistic viewpoint on disease prevention.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Rather than concentrating on isolated symptoms or risk factors, doctors could soon use blood test results to anticipate which organs warrant the most urgent attention.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This method could reshape how screenings and check-ups are conducted, allowing for highly targeted counseling and therapies before irreversible damage occurs. “We hope our findings could contribute to new ways of helping people stay healthy for longer as they age,” noted Kivimaki. </p>



<p>“Blood tests may advise whether a person needs to take better care of a particular organ, and potentially provide an early-warning signal that they may be at risk of a particular disease.”</p>



<p>In effect, the ability to monitor organ-specific aging might be a stepping stone toward personalized healthcare, where prevention is carefully crafted to an individual’s physiology and medical history.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>

<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>

<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
