<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://resjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/icad.70017" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Insect Conservation and Diversity</em></a><em>.</em></p>

<p>A branching coral under pressure from heat and physical damage appears to gain crucial support from a particular reef-dwelling crab, offering fresh insight into how positive species relationships can shield corals from multiple hazards.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These findings reveal a protective role for the crustaceans when corals face intense stress, highlighting the possibility that cooperative interactions may bolster the resilience of vulnerable reef habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reef-dwelling-crabs-and-foundation-corals">Reef-dwelling crabs and foundation corals </h2>



<p>Published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2024.2936" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Proceedings of the Royal B Biological Sciences</em></a>, the study emphasizes that corals are what ecologists call “foundation species,” forming the bedrock of entire ecosystems.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Study first author Julianna Renzi conducted the research as a graduate student at the Duke University Marine Laboratory, part of the <a href="https://nicholas.duke.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nicholas School of the Environment</a>.</p>



<p>“Foundation species like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breaks-in-ancient-coral-growth-reveal-earths-climate-past/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">corals</a> create the base of an ecosystem: They form structures that other species use for shelter, they modify the local environment, and they provide food for other organisms,” said Renzi.</p>



<p>“Learning how these species respond to stress can help us design better strategies to conserve them - and, in turn, other species that rely on them - in an era of global change.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mutualism-and-overlapping-stressors">Mutualism and overlapping stressors </h2>



<p>Renzi concentrates on the concept of mutualism, in which two species each benefit from interacting with the other. Much existing research focuses on how one beneficial partnership mitigates a single threat, such as higher ocean temperatures. </p>



<p>However, few studies have explored whether such alliances can ease multiple overlapping stressors. </p>



<p>In this case, the team selected a branching coral known as <em>Acropora aspera</em> from a research zone in Australia’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coral-bleaching-has-reached-catastrophic-levels-on-the-great-barrier-reef/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Great Barrier Reef</a> during a period of elevated water temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Within controlled seawater tanks, the scientists subjected coral samples to different stress combinations, including physical wounding, harmful algae, and the presence of <em>Cyclodius ungulatus</em> (the hoof-clawed reef crab).&nbsp;</p>



<p>Coral tissue loss over a month served as the main measure of coral health, allowing the team to see precisely which factors worsened damage and which helped the coral endure.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-benefits-for-wounded-corals">Unexpected benefits for wounded corals</h2>



<p>The data indicated that high temperatures alone instigated tissue loss, but the extent depended heavily on other conditions. </p>



<p>Corals placed alongside harmful algae were six times more likely to suffer serious tissue loss, while those housed with reef crabs had more than a 60% lower chance of severe damage. </p>



<p>Even more unexpected was how strongly the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-crab-diversity-discovered-in-coral-reefs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crabs</a>’ presence helped corals that had sustained wounds. Those corals displayed significantly less tissue loss than uninjured corals sharing tanks with crabs, and also less tissue loss than wounded corals without crab companions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While corals lacking crabs sometimes saw injuries expand, corals with crab neighbors rarely experienced further deterioration around the wounds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reef-crabs-removing-algae">Reef crabs removing algae</h2>



<p>To unravel what motivated the crabs to linger near wounded coral, the researchers examined their behavior in more detail. They noticed that, in laboratory tests, the crustaceans avoided live coral tissue, instead feeding in regions where tissue had recently been lost.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Observations on the reef revealed that areas of algae disappeared faster around corals with wounds, leading the investigators to suggest that reef crabs and other organisms might be methodically removing algae in these damaged spots, effectively tidying up the coral surface.</p>



<p>Another key question arose: what attracts crabs to fresh wounds in the first place? Renzi and colleagues propose that the injured coral releases a nutritious mucus that proves enticing.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Corals probably experience small wounds, like the ones we used in this study, relatively frequently from fish bites and physical abrasion. These wounds are probably not super detrimental, but they may be enough to release this mucus and attract coral-associated organisms, like <em>C. ungulatus</em>,” said Renzi.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mutualism-and-heat-stress-resistance">Mutualism and heat stress resistance</h2>



<p>The conclusions back an ecological view that beneficial interspecies interactions, or mutualisms, can become particularly vital when the environment imposes significant hardships.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This work challenges a paradigm about corals,” said Brian Silliman, Rachel Carson Distinguished Professor of Marine Conservation Biology at the Nicholas School, who advised Renzi during her master’s work.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The temperature at which corals succumb to heat stress is generally thought to be innate and inflexible. But this work shows that an intricate biological partnership greatly increases the ability of corals to resist heat stress. The crabs don’t affect heat tolerance directly - rather, they appear to remove the stress of injury by cleaning coral wounds.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reef-crabs-working-under-pressure">Reef crabs working under pressure </h2>



<p>The researchers note that these discoveries hold promise for coral reef restoration, since introducing mutualistic crabs to newly planted colonies could reduce tissue loss from infection and disease. </p>



<p>One broader lesson is that nature sometimes operates more cooperatively than commonly assumed. </p>



<p>“We often think of the world as ‘dog-eat-dog’ and assume organisms are constantly competing against each other in effort to survive,” Renzi said. “But in cases like these, positive species interactions may be really important for survival. Evolutionarily, looking out for number 1 may also mean looking out for number 2.”</p>



<p>Altogether, this study suggests that reef-dwelling crabs could prove key to helping certain branching corals remain healthy, even under the combined pressures of heat and injury. </p>



<p>By highlighting such mutually beneficial partnerships, the findings pave the way for innovative approaches to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/protecting-coral-reefs-is-a-matter-of-humans-rights/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reef conservation</a> and underline the value of collaborative ties in the marine realm.</p>

Reef crabs help heat-stressed corals survive

<p>Severe weather events have become more frequent and intense globally, threatening public health significantly. Of these events, heatwaves are particularly notable for their silent but lethal effects. </p>



<p>Heatwaves are frequently underestimated in comparison to events that are more obviously destructive, such as hurricanes or floods.</p>



<p>A recent study from <a href="https://www.uq.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The University of Queensland</a> has revealed dire trends. The researchers investigated increased exposure to heat, particularly in urban settings, as a result of the exacerbating effects of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/astonishing-global-heat-in-january-2025-defied-climate-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heatwave-mortality-in-a-hotter-climate">Heatwave mortality in a hotter climate</h2>



<p>Heat-related deaths are a rising issue globally,  and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-earth-energy-imbalance-temperature-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate</a> change is a major contributing factor.</p>



<p>The Queensland study confirms that human-driven climate change has increased heatwave deaths by 20 percent. The findings highlight the critical need to be more proactive about addressing climate-related health threats.</p>



<p>Professor Nicholas Osborne, an associate in UQ School of Public Health, emphasized the value of preparedness.</p>



<p>"Our results suggest heatwaves with associated periods of higher mortality will occur more often than they did in the past," said Professor Osborne.</p>



<p>"These higher mortality rates associated with extreme temperature heatwaves are projected to continue, and we hope our research will help communities be better prepared for heatwaves."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cities-face-highest-heatwave-risks">Cities face highest heatwave risks</h2>



<p>Urban areas are particularly at risk from heatwaves due to high population densities and large infrastructure like roads, buildings, and transport systems.</p>



<p>The UQ team examined 20 years of information on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-heat-is-pushing-parts-of-earth-beyond-human-survival/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">temperature</a> and death rates throughout Australia, using the internationally accepted Heatwave Vulnerability Index.</p>



<p>Study lead author Patrick Amoatey said city dwellers are considerably more at risk when there is severe heat.</p>



<p>"We used an index mapping tool to assess how human populations will fare under a range of heat scenarios," related Amoatey. "We found the Heatwave Vulnerability Index, frequently used in other countries, could reliably predict heatwave-related deaths in Australia."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-who-is-most-vulnerable">Who is most vulnerable?</h2>



<p>Based on a detailed data analysis of over 2,000 suburbs, the researchers were able to identify certain factors that greatly elevated vulnerability.</p>



<p>Urban dwellers with lower incomes, less education, diabetes, and limited healthcare access were especially vulnerable to heat surges.</p>



<p>Australia's capital cities, which are home to about 70% of the country's population, have a high concentration of residents with these risk factors. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recognizing-the-heat-island-effect">Recognizing the heat island effect</h2>



<p>One major contributor to increased risks in urban centers is the "heat island effect," in which cities store and absorb heat more than outlying or rural areas. </p>



<p>"We believe the risk is higher in cities because of the 'heat island effect,' as there are more heat-absorbing surfaces like roads, buildings, and railway lines," said Amoatey.</p>



<p>The heat island effect intensifies temperature extremes and significantly affects residents' health during heatwaves. Understanding this effect is crucial for urban planning and developing strategies to prevent heat-related fatalities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-heatwave-responses">Global heatwave responses</h2>



<p>Amoatey emphasized the successful implementation of the Heatwave Vulnerability Index. In London, the index effectively predicted increases in ambulance calls and death rates during heat surges.</p>



<p>"This is helpful for health authorities and something we could use in Australia," said Amoatey. </p>



<p>Incorporating the heatwave index into current frameworks would substantially improve community preparedness and resilience, while delivering real-time intelligence to health authorities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-climate-change-in-australia">Impact of climate change in Australia</h2>



<p>A study by UQ and <a href="https://www.anu.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Australian National University</a> researchers found a link between climate change and deaths during the 2009 heatwave in southeastern Australia.</p>



<p>The disaster was estimated to have caused 374 excess fatalities as temperatures hit a record 12-15 degrees above the average. </p>



<p>"Human-induced climate change had increased the excess heatwave-related mortality in the 2009 event by 20%. These findings were in line with other research that shows heat-related deaths are increasing due to human-induced climate change," Dr. Osborne noted.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preparedness-for-future-events">Preparedness for future events</h2>



<p>In light of these alarming <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mapping-marine-heatwaves-to-understand-their-impacts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trends</a>, experts call for urgent health infrastructure and workforce preparedness. </p>



<p>"From a public health perspective, our studies and further research can provide guidance on the need for adequate health infrastructure and workforce that might be needed to cope with higher demand for health services during heatwaves," said Dr. Osborne. </p>



<p>Preparation could greatly lower future mortality rates and enhance community resilience against unavoidable climate-related issues in the future.</p>



<p>The Heatwave Vulnerability Index study appears in <em><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0195925525000095?via%3Dihub" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Environmental Impact Assessment Review</a></em>, while the climate change and mortality study is published in <em><a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/2752-5295/ada8cd" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Environmental Research: Climate</a></em>.</p>

<p>Anxiety is a common mental health disorder that affects millions of people all over the world. It has long been the subject of intense scientific study.</p>



<p>Recently, researchers have stumbled upon an unexpected ally in the fight against this prevalent condition - the humble gut microbe. </p>



<p>It appears that gut microbes, in their natural habitat, produce compounds known as indoles, which are crucial for regulating the brain activity associated with anxiety.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tiny-microbes-big-impacts">Tiny microbes, big impacts</h2>



<p>The researchers, who were based at <a href="https://www.duke-nus.edu.sg/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Duke-NUS Medical School</a> and the National Neuroscience Institute, set out to investigate the role that gut microbes play in regulating anxious behavior.</p>



<p>The findings are truly eye-opening. Not only do <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gut-microbes-affect-how-we-handle-everyday-stress/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbes in the gut</a> influence brain activity, they may also hold the key to potential treatments for mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gut-microbes-and-anxiety">Gut microbes and anxiety </h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/151-million-americans-have-mental-health-disorders-linked-to-leaded-gasoline/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mental health disorders</a> are becoming increasingly prevalent in today's world. In Singapore, for instance, 1 in 7 people has experienced a mental health issue.</p>



<p>The most common conditions include <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/confirmed-magic-mushrooms-can-effectively-treat-depression/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">depression</a> and anxiety, which contribute significantly to the disease burden in many countries.</p>



<p>The research team set out to explore how the presence of microbes affects the anxious behavior of mice.</p>



<p>In germ-free mice that had not been exposed to any living microbes, observable anxiety-related behavior increased significantly compared to the behavior of mice that had been exposed to microbes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-the-gut-to-the-brain">From the gut to the brain</h2>



<p>Upon further study, the researchers linked this increased anxiety to heightened activity in the basolateral <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-do-fear-and-anxiety-reside-in-the-brain-new-cells-identified/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">amygdala</a> (BLA) - a part of the brain responsible for processing emotions such as fear and anxiety.</p>



<p>More specifically, the team identified the role of specialized proteins within brain cells, referred to as calcium-dependent SK2 channels, which regulate anxiety behavior.</p>



<p>"Our findings reveal the specific and intricate neural process that links microbes to mental health," said co-lead author Professor Shawn Je.</p>



<p>"Those without any live microbes showed higher levels of anxious behavior than those with live bacteria. Essentially, the lack of these microbes disrupted the way their brains functioned, particularly in areas that control fear and anxiety, leading to anxious behavior."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gut-microbes-and-mental-balance">Gut microbes and mental balance </h2>



<p>The researchers extended their investigation by introducing live microbes to germ-free mice.</p>



<p>With live microbes reintroduced, the heightened neuronal activity in the basolateral amygdala was significantly reduced, and the rodents showed less anxiety-related behavior.</p>



<p>Additionally, treating these germ-free mice with indoles - metabolites produced by certain microbes - resulted in similar effects, confirming a direct link between the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gut-bacteria-have-an-impact-on-brain-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gut microbiota</a> and mental balance.</p>



<p>"Establishing hunger signals and controlling hunger is an evolutionarily conserved defense mechanism. The physiological switch at birth, can therefore, be viewed as a first major wave of anxiety exposure for the newborn, which simply says, 'If you don’t eat, you will die,'" explained co-lead author Professor Sven Pettersson.</p>



<p>"Additionally, birth is associated with exposure to breast milk, known to contain microbes that can produce molecules known as indoles." </p>



<p>"Indoles are known to be secreted in plants when they are exposed to stress or malnutrition (drought) and in this paper we report a similar mechanism in which indoles can regulate anxiety levels in mammals."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-new-era-of-anxiety-treatments">A new era of anxiety treatments</h2>



<p>This breakthrough suggests that targeting the gut-brain axis could pave the way for new anxiety treatments, either through dietary indole supplementation or introduction of indole-producing microbes as probiotics. </p>



<p>Professor Patrick Tan, Senior Vice-Dean for Research at Duke-NUS said that the findings underscore the deep evolutionary links between microbes, nutrition, and brain function. </p>



<p>"This has huge potential for people suffering from stress-related conditions, such as sleep disorders or those unable to tolerate standard psychiatric medications. It’s a reminder that mental health is not just in the brain - it’s in the gut too," said Professor Tan.</p>



<p>Next, the researchers will test their findings in clinical trials and examine the efficacy of indole-based probiotics or supplements as a natural anxiety treatment in humans.</p>



<p>If these trials are successful, we may be on the brink of a new era in mental health care, where gut microbes play a pivotal role in maintaining mental health balance.</p>

<p>Birds and feathers are closely tied together - feathers enable flight, provide insulation, and make courtship displays possible. Yet the origin of these remarkable structures predates birds.</p>



<p>Feathered dinosaurs were first reported in the 1990s, but many mysteries remain about how and when feathers emerged. Did all dinosaurs share a feathered ancestor, or did feathers appear multiple times in different lineages?&nbsp;</p>



<p>A new study co-authored by Paul Barrett and Xu Xing from the <a href="https://www.nhm.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Natural History Museum</a> attempts to consolidate the latest knowledge and move us closer to an answer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-feathers-of-the-distant-past">Feathers of the distant past</h2>



<p>Fossil evidence has revealed that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/modern-bird-feathers-contain-traces-of-dinosaur-feathers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">feathers</a> are not exclusive to modern birds and their immediate relatives. Dinosaurs with feathers existed in the distant past, showing that these structures are much more ancient than once believed.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, broad questions endure: Are feathers found only in meat-eating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-theropod-dinosaurs-thrived-in-polar-environments/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">theropods</a> close to birds, or could they have been more widespread across the dinosaur family tree?</p>



<p>“While dozens of feathered dinosaurs have been identified since Sinosauropteryx was first unveiled in the 1990s, they’re mainly meat-eaters that are close relatives of birds,” Barrett explained. </p>



<p>“Everyone agrees that these dinosaurs had feathers, but there’s little consensus beyond that.”</p>



<p>“To settle these disagreements, we need more fossils and to define what a feather is. If we can sort this out, it could reveal where feathers first came from and whether they predate the dinosaurs themselves.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conflicting-theories-on-feather-origins">Conflicting theories on feather origins</h2>



<p>Some scientists propose that feathers originated in a common ancestor of dinosaurs and pterosaurs, suggesting all later descendants inherited the potential to grow feathers - though some lost it over time.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Others argue that pterosaurs did not have true feathers, meaning the structures observed on them might be something else. </p>



<p>A third viewpoint holds that feathers emerged solely within theropods, the group that includes well-known predators like Velociraptor and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/t-rex-may-have-had-brains-and-brawn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tyrannosaurus</a>.</p>



<p>To resolve these debates, better fossil evidence from earlier time periods is essential. Most known feathered dinosaur fossils date to the Cretaceous, yet feathers may have evolved well before then.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Finding older specimens could clarify whether feathers appeared at the dawn of dinosaur evolution or surfaced in only one branch of the family tree.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-did-early-dinosaurs-have-feathers">Did early dinosaurs have feathers?</h2>



<p>Professor Barrett emphasized the importance of discovering prehistoric remains from much earlier geological periods.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We need to find new sites with fossilized feathers, particularly from the Jurassic and the Triassic,” he said. “The Triassic is especially important, as finding feathered dinosaurs at this early time in dinosaur evolution would suggest that all dinosaurs had an ancestor with feathers.”</p>



<p>“If feathered dinosaurs aren’t found among early <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dinosaurs-evolved-feathers-for-much-more-than-just-flying/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dinosaurs</a>, then it makes it more likely feathers were an innovation among later groups.”</p>



<p>Such discoveries could shift perceptions of the entire dinosaur lineage. Were feathers a universal trait that some species shed over time, or did they evolve independently in separate groups?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-defining-a-true-feather">Defining a "true feather"</h2>



<p>Another challenge paleontologists face involves the definition of a “true feather.” </p>



<p>Modern bird feathers have distinct chemical and structural characteristics, including growth from a follicle in the skin. Ancient dinosaur feathers may have looked different, reflecting earlier evolutionary stages.</p>



<p>“To identify a true feather from a living bird, we’d look to see what it’s made out of, and its structure,” Barrett explained. “One of the characteristics we have to identify is that the feather grows out of a follicle in the skin.”</p>



<p>“It’s possible, however, that follicles and other modern characteristics might not have been present in all dinosaur feathers. Detailed anatomical work at a microscopic level to compare preserved skin and feathers with examples from living birds could help to resolve this.”</p>



<p>Fossilized skin can also offer important clues. Some specimens display bird-like tissues, hinting that the common ancestor of certain dinosaurs and birds shared these traits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>But other dinosaurs show more reptilian textures, indicating the possibility that feathers evolved separately in multiple lineages.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unraveling-the-history-of-feathers">Unraveling the history of feathers</h2>



<p>For the moment, experts remain divided on how feathers took hold in dinosaur evolution. The challenge lies in discovering enough well-preserved fossils from the right time periods and reaching a clear consensus on what counts as a feather.&nbsp;</p>



<p>From tantalizing glimpses in existing fossils to ongoing searches in promising new sites, researchers continue to piece together this ancient puzzle.</p>



<p>Ultimately, answers about the origins of feathers may transform how scientists understand dinosaur evolution - and the emergence of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-evolution-timeline-pushed-back-20-million-years-by-baminornis-zhenghensis-discovery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birds</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Until then, paleontologists will continue to search the world for the fossils which can finally settle this decades-old debate. </p>



<p>Each new find has the potential to reshape our perception of the prehistoric world and the ancestors of the birds we see in our skies today.</p>

<p>This bright blue creature might look like a single jellyfish drifting on the water, but it is actually a community of specialized polyps all working in unison. This <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/hydrozoa" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hydrozoan</a>, known as the Blue Button jellyfish or <em>Porpita porpita</em>, appears delicate but displays a cunning strategy for survival.</p>



<p>Its float usually measures only a few inches across, yet it hosts an impressive mini-collective where each polyp plays a unique role. </p>



<p>Some feed, some defend, and others handle reproduction - all of which contribute to the colony’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-jellyfish-day-2024-protecting-the-health-of-our-oceans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">success</a>.</p>



<p>Marine biologist Dr. Shi from the <a href="https://www.ysfri.ac.cn/ENGLISH.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute</a> has <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39591675/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">documented</a> notable appearances of these organisms in new locations along coastal regions.</p>



<p>Studies have suggested that changes in ocean temperatures and currents may explain why this small floater is popping up in places where it once was rare.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-floating-colony-not-a-jellyfish">A floating colony, not a jellyfish</h2>



<p>The upper part of the colony looks like a thin disk that can be a brilliant blue or sometimes greenish-brown. This disk is a gas-filled float that keeps the group on the water’s surface as currents move it around.</p>



<p>Circling beneath the float are hundreds of tentacle-like structures that are actually bundled <a href="https://sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk/news/hydroids-and-bryozoans-the-weird-and-wonderful">polyps</a>. They branch off in different lengths, forming a fringe that does much of the colony’s work.</p>



<p>Some polyps specialize in gathering food from the water. Others focus on warding off would-be predators with stinging cells called nematocysts that are designed to deter an attacker.</p>



<p>This layered teamwork sets <em>Porpita porpita</em> apart from most solitary <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jellyfish-more-than-just-a-snack-for-predatory-fish/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">jelly-like creatures</a>. Its structure is so integrated that it can function almost like a single being.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-porpita-have-a-mild-sting">Porpita have a mild sting</h2>



<p>Most casual swimmers who brush up against this floating cluster feel little more than a mild irritation. The sting is gentle compared to that of more notorious marine animals, yet those with sensitive skin might notice some redness or itching.</p>



<p>The sting is still a defense that helps the colony survive. Small fish and other drifting animals think twice before nibbling on those tentacles!</p>



<p>Many beachgoers mistake the Blue Button for a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/comb-jellyfish-can-fuse-with-a-friend-and-become-one-creature-after-injury/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">jellyfish</a> because of its overall shape and bright hue. Careful observers soon realize, however, that this is a colonial hydrozoan rather than a single organism.</p>



<p>A separate <a href="https://www.lajar.cl/index.php/rlajar/article/view/vol51-issue4-fulltext-3070" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">analysis</a> suggests that sightings along the Mexican Atlantic have increased as more people venture into coastal areas. </p>



<p>Researchers are using open-access data and field surveys to keep tabs on the spread of the species.</p>

<p>Scientists have found that population size can fluctuate with seasonal shifts in temperature. During certain months, cooler water encourages healthy growth, while extreme heat might reduce their numbers in shallower areas.</p>

<p>While <em>Porpita porpita</em> itself poses little harm to people, its presence can indicate shifts in local ecology. </p>



<p>Changes in temperature or currents can carry these creatures beyond their usual routes, raising questions about broader marine health.</p>



<p>They also serve as food for certain sea slugs, snails, and sea turtles, linking them to larger food webs. Observing their distribution can reveal patterns in how smaller marine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-invasion-jellyfish-are-moving-north-in-a-warming-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">predators</a> and grazers behave.</p>

<p>They presented both young and adult apes with videos showing a human hand (social model) or a mechanical claw (non-social model) constructing a tower.</p>



<p>"We found that apes better remembered a tower when they saw a hand building it rather than a mechanical claw. This is because they paid more attention to the actions of a social being rather than a machine," noted Marie Padberg, the first author of the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-attention-improves-social-memory">Attention improves social memory</h2>



<p>To understand this better, the researchers partnered with the <a href="https://www.unisa.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of South Australia</a>. They used artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze regular video recordings of the apes. </p>



<p>The AI technology measured the apes' heart rates to determine their attention levels during the experiment.</p>



<p>The results showed that apes paid more attention during social demonstrations. Higher attention was directly linked to better memory, showing how closely attention and memory are connected.</p>

<p>Interestingly, improved memory for social events was evident only in adult apes. Younger apes, including juveniles and infants, did not show memory enhancement when viewing social models. </p>

<p>Study senior author Daniel Haun is the director of the Department of Comparative Cultural Psychology at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology.</p>



<p>"Non-human ape infants and juveniles did not show superior memory for social events. There could be several reasons for this, including the nature of the objects, the complexity of the task, or the duration of the videos," noted Haun.</p>



<p>"Further research is needed to determine whether superior social memory at younger ages is truly a uniquely human phenomenon."</p>

<p>This study highlights how important the timing of cognitive development is in primates. It suggests that non-human primates, like apes, might only show improved memory from social interactions as they grow older.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hurricane-activity-is-set-to-increase">Hurricane activity is set to increase</h2>



<p>A recent study from the University of Reading concludes that hurricanes will strengthen and become more frequent in the Atlantic and the eastern Pacific within the next decade.</p>



<p>The coasts of North and Central America, which have already experienced severe <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hurricane-helene-a-glimpse-into-the-future-of-natural-disasters/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">weather conditions</a>, must prepare to face more dangers. This means that accurate long-term forecasts are essential for timely precautionary measures.</p>



<p>Using sophisticated forecasting computer programs developed by the <a href="https://www.metoffice.gov.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UK Met Office</a>, scientists were able to successfully predict hurricane activity ten years ahead. The findings indicate tropical cyclone activity in the Atlantic would be over twice that of the 1970s.</p>



<p>At the same time, hurricane counts in the eastern Pacific would increase by over a third, leading to a dramatic surge in storm threats to coastal communities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-storm-energy-will-double">Storm energy will double</h2>



<p>Apart from frequency, the researchers indicated an increase in the total storm energy predicted. Storm energy, with consideration to frequency, intensity, and hurricane duration, captures the full view of hurricane risks. </p>



<p>The experts predict that storm energy in the North Atlantic will double compared to the 1970s, creating more powerful and devastating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-has-amplified-hurricane-strength/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">storms</a>.</p>



<p>Paul-Arthur Monerie, the lead scientist at the <a href="https://www.reading.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Reading</a>'s National Centre for Atmospheric Science, emphasized the value of enhanced forecasting.</p>



<p>"Until now, hurricane predictions have been like trying to see through a dense fog as we could only make out what was directly ahead of us," he noted.</p>



<p>"Better forecasting clears that fog away, revealing patterns years into the future. This advancement gives coastal communities precious time to prepare. Our study shows hurricane activity is set to increase through 2030, giving everyone more time to prepare and protect themselves."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warmer-oceans-fuel-hurricane-activity">Warmer oceans fuel hurricane activity</h2>



<p>The researchers approached the study in a direct fashion by monitoring specific hurricanes through climate model simulations.</p>



<p>Previous long-range hurricane prediction relied on indirect measures like sea surface temperature or atmospheric pressure trends. Real-time storm monitoring maximizes precision and offers valuable data regarding impending hurricane <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coastal-cities-are-increasingly-vulnerable-to-hurricanes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">activity</a>.</p>



<p>Higher ocean surface temperatures, particularly in the Atlantic, are driving the increase in hurricane activity. Higher temperatures provide the additional energy needed for storms to form and intensify.</p>



<p>With warmer ocean water, the hurricanes intensify faster and produce more powerful and destructive storms.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-winds-and-coastal-infrastructure">Changing winds and coastal infrastructure</h2>



<p>Another important factor in the projected rise in hurricane activity is changing atmospheric wind patterns. Variations in wind speed and direction at different altitudes of the atmosphere are conducive to the formation and strengthening of hurricanes.</p>

<p>A newly identified version of a gene in the human genome appears to have influenced our capacity for complex speech, distinguishing our species from close relatives like Neanderthals and Denisovans.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This finding could help explain why Homo sapiens alone developed sophisticated language, an ability that underpins much of our culture and technology.</p>



<p>A team of researchers led by <a href="https://www.rockefeller.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rockefeller University</a> has pinpointed a particular protein variant - found only in modern humans - that alters vocalization.&nbsp;</p>



<p>When introduced into mice, this version of a gene called NOVA1 changed the ultrasonic calls the animals produce, hinting at its potential role in the evolutionary roots of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-songs-human-speech-common-vocal-genetic-origin-syrinx/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human speech</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetics-behind-complex-speech">Genetics behind complex speech</h2>



<p>Modern humans have long been known to possess numerous adaptations in their anatomy and nervous system that enable speech, including specialized vocal tracts and brain regions devoted to language processing. Yet the genetics behind this capacity remains poorly understood.&nbsp;</p>



<p>One candidate gene, FOXP2, has been linked to speech and language disorders in people, but evidence suggests <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neanderthal-evolution-was-more-complex-than-previously-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neanderthals</a> also possessed the same FOXP2 variant - leaving open questions about what truly sets humans apart.</p>



<p>The team behind the current study focused on NOVA1, first identified in the early 1990s for its essential contribution to brain function.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Such changes may have played important roles in the acquisition of characteristics that have contributed to the emergence, expansion, and survival of Homo sapiens,” said first author Yoko Tajima, a postdoctoral associate at Rockefeller University.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Researchers have found that variants of NOVA1 are associated with language and motor difficulties, underlining the gene’s profound influence on neural development.</p>



<p>Unlike the versions of NOVA1 that appear in other mammals, birds, and even archaic humans, the form carried by modern humans contains a single amino acid substitution referred to as I197V. This difference, though seemingly small, may have had outsized consequences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-surprising-twist-nbsp">A surprising twist&nbsp;</h2>



<p>To explore the functional impact of I197V, scientists used <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crispr-gene-editing-gets-a-revolutionary-upgrade-with-new-tool/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CRISPR editing</a> to replace the standard NOVA1 gene in mice with the human-specific variant. They then examined how this change altered the animals’ brain activity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Initially, there was no detectable shift in the genes responsible for motor control or overall neural development - implying the mice developed normally in most respects.</p>



<p>Soon, however, a critical clue emerged: many of the transcripts affected by the human NOVA1 variant were tied to vocalization.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Study leader Robert B. Darnell is head of the Laboratory of Molecular Neuro-Oncology at Rockefeller.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We found that when we ‘transliterated’ the squeaks made by mice with the human-specific I197V variant, they were different from those of the wild-type mice. Some of the ‘letters’ had changed,” said Darnell. “It was one of those really surprising moments in science.”</p>



<p>When the team tested how adult male mice “spoke” to female mice during mating attempts, they discovered that the engineered mice produced distinct vocal patterns.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“They ‘talked’ differently to the female mice,” Darnell noted. “One can imagine how such changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/baleen-whales-cannot-escape-human-noise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vocalization</a> could have a profound impact on evolution.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-archaic-humans-and-complex-speech">Archaic humans and complex speech</h2>



<p>To determine whether this genetic alteration was unique to Homo sapiens, the researchers compared modern human NOVA1 to the genomes of Neanderthals and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mysterious-denisovan-species-humans-lived-undisturbed-tibetan-plateau-160000-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Denisovans</a>, human relatives who lived tens of thousands of years ago.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Both archaic lineages possessed the older NOVA1 form seen in other species - lacking the I197V substitution. A further check of over 650,000 modern human genomes revealed that nearly everyone carries the I197V version of NOVA1, solidifying its status as a widespread and defining feature of our species.</p>



<p>“This gene is part of a sweeping evolutionary change in early modern humans and hints at potential ancient origins of spoken language,” Darnell said. “NOVA1 may be a bona fide human ‘language gene,’ though certainly it’s only one of many human-specific genetic changes.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>



<p>While NOVA1’s impact on speech is not yet fully understood, these findings open important research paths. Future work could examine how this human-specific variant contributes to developmental disorders, including those affecting language.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Our discovery could have clinical relevance in many ways, ranging from developmental disorders to neurodegenerative disease,” Darnell said.</p>



<p>NOVA1’s neural pathways might help explain why some conditions prevent speech or hamper vocal communication.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The gene has been associated with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/autism-diagnoses-have-almost-tripled-in-the-us-over-the-past-ten-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">autism</a> spectrum disorder, and earlier studies from the same group reported a patient with mutations in NOVA1 who presented speech delays, among other neurological issues. Investigating how I197V influences brain circuitry could yield insights into such disorders.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-language-and-human-uniqueness">Language and human uniqueness</h2>



<p>The capacity for complex speech, coupled with advanced cognitive functions, has propelled humans to remarkable achievements - from passing down knowledge orally to building global civilizations. </p>



<p>This study highlights that our linguistic edge may be rooted in subtle but pivotal genetic differences - differences that evolved after our lineage diverged from archaic humans.</p>



<p>Though the NOVA1 variant alone does not explain why humans can speak while other hominids could not, it highlights one of the many genetic innovations underlying our species’ linguistic abilities.&nbsp;</p>



<p>With further work, scientists hope to piece together more of the molecular puzzle behind language, offering a glimpse into what truly made Homo sapiens the world’s great storytellers.</p>

How did humans start talking? Scientists may have found the answer

A newly identified version of a gene in the human...

<p>A new study has revealed that wild fish can recognize and follow specific human divers, distinguishing between individuals based on visual cues such as colors on wetsuits and gear.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings suggest that fish, like some other animals, may form differentiated relationships with humans, challenging long-standing assumptions about their cognitive abilities.</p>



<p>The research was conducted by scientists at the <a href="https://www.ab.mpg.de/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior</a> (MPI-AB) in Germany. It builds on years of anecdotal observations from scientific divers who noticed that local <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fish-can-recognize-themselves-in-the-mirror/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish</a> in the Mediterranean would follow and steal food from the same divers, while ignoring others.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Nobody has ever asked whether wild fish have the capacity, or indeed motivation, to recognize us when we enter their underwater world,” said Maëlan Tomasek, a doctoral student at MPI-AB and the <a href="https://www.uca.fr/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Clermont Auvergne</a>, France.</p>



<p>Now, the researchers have confirmed that fish do recognize individual humans - and more than that, they remember which ones provide rewards.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wild-fish-learn-to-identify-divers">Wild fish learn to identify divers</h2>



<p>The study took place at a research site eight meters underwater in the Mediterranean Sea, where fish have become accustomed to the presence of scientists. Unlike lab experiments, the tests were conducted in the open sea, meaning fish were free to participate or leave at any time.</p>



<p>Katinka Soller, a bachelor student at MPI-AB and co-first author of the study, designed the training phase to test whether wild fish could learn to follow an individual diver. Wearing a bright red vest, she swam a set 50-meter route while feeding the fish.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Over time, she gradually removed the red vest, concealed the food, and eventually wore only standard dive gear - yet the fish continued to follow her, anticipating a reward.</p>



<p>Two species of seabream were particularly eager participants. “Once I entered the water, it was a matter of seconds before I would see them swimming towards me, seemingly coming out of nowhere,” Soller said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>She soon recognized certain individuals who returned day after day and even gave them names, such as “Bernie” and “Alfie.”</p>



<p>After 12 days of training, about 20 fish were consistently following Soller on her swims, proving that they had learned to associate her with food. This set the stage for the next phase of the experiment: testing whether they could distinguish her from another diver.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-presenting-fish-with-a-second-diver-nbsp">Presenting fish with a second diver&nbsp;</h2>



<p>To investigate whether the fish were following Soller specifically or simply any diver, the researchers introduced a second diver, Tomasek, who had different-colored gear.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The two divers started at the same point and swam in opposite directions. On the first day, the fish split evenly between them, unsure of whom to follow. "You could see them struggling to decide who to chase,” Soller said.</p>



<p>However, only Soller provided <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fish-show-distinct-personalities-when-foraging-for-food/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food</a>. By the second day, the fish overwhelmingly chose to follow her instead of Tomasek. To confirm that they were actively learning to recognize the divers, the researchers focused on six individual fish, four of which showed strong learning patterns over the experiment.</p>



<p>“This is a cool result because it shows that fish were not simply following Katinka out of habit or because other fish were there,” Tomasek explained. “They were conscious of both divers, testing each one, and learning that Katinka produced the reward at the end of the swim.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-fish-recognize-human-divers">How fish recognize human divers</h2>



<p>To further investigate what <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/visual-cues-initiate-the-brains-decision-to-cooperate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">visual cues</a> the fish were using to distinguish between divers, the team repeated the test - this time with both divers wearing identical wetsuits and fins. With no distinguishing features, the fish could no longer tell them apart.</p>



<p>For the researchers, this was strong evidence that the fish were associating specific colors or patterns on the divers' gear with food.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Almost all fish have color vision, so it is not surprising that the seabream learned to associate the correct diver based on patches of color on the body,” Tomasek said.</p>



<p>This ability is similar to how human divers recognize one another underwater. “Faces are distorted by diving masks, so we usually rely on differences between wetsuits, fins, or other parts of the gear to recognize each other,” Soller noted.&nbsp;</p>



<p>With more time, the researchers believe the fish might have learned to recognize subtler details, such as hand shapes or body movements.</p>



<p>“We already observed them approaching our faces and scrutinizing our bodies,” Soller added. “It was like they were studying us, not the other way around.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fish-and-human-recognition">Fish and human recognition</h2>



<p>This study supports anecdotal accounts of animals recognizing individual humans but goes further by providing controlled experimental evidence in a completely natural environment.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The ability to distinguish specific people suggests that fish may have more complex <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fish-sizes-itself-up-in-a-mirror-before-going-into-combat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cognitive abilities</a> than previously thought.</p>



<p>If wild fish can learn to recognize and follow certain individuals, it raises the possibility that pet fish - or even fish in other natural environments - use similar strategies to identify familiar humans.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Finding that wild fish can quickly learn to use specific cues to recognize individual divers suggests that many other fish species - our pets included - are able to recognize certain patterns to identify us.</p>



<p>Senior author Alex Jordan, who leads a research group at MPI-AB, finds the results unsurprising.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It doesn’t come as a shock to me that these animals, which navigate a complex world and interact with myriad different species every minute, can recognize humans based on visual cues,” said Jordan.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>“I suppose the most surprising thing is that we would be surprised they can. It suggests we might underestimate the capacities of our underwater cousins.”</p>



<p>Tomasek noted that it might be strange to think about humans sharing a bond with an animal like a fish that sits so far from us on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/diverse-group-of-snakes-has-a-new-evolutionary-tree/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolutionary tree</a>, that we don’t intuitively understand.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“But human-animal relationships can overcome millions of years of evolutionary distance if we bother to pay attention. Now we know that they see us, it’s time for us to see them.”&nbsp;</p>

Wild fish and human divers: An unexpected bond

A new study has revealed that wild fish can recognize...

<p>Generic drugs are often promoted as identical to their brand-name equivalents - cheaper, yet equally safe and effective. However, a recent study challenges this widely held belief.</p>



<p>Study co-author John Gray is a professor in The Ohio State University’s <a href="https://www.osu.edu/giving/explore/support-a-college/fisher-college-business" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fisher College of Business</a>. He pointed out that disparities in manufacturing standards exist worldwide.</p>



<p>“Drug manufacturing regulation, and therefore quality assurance practices, differ between emerging economies like India and advanced economies like the United States. Where generic drugs are manufactured can make a significant difference,” said Professor Gray.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-generic-drugs-from-the-u-s-and-india">Generic drugs from the U.S. and India</h2>



<p>The researchers uncovered a concerning link.  They discovered that users of generic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/americans-have-a-shocking-dependency-on-prescription-drugs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">drugs</a> manufactured in India reported substantially more "severe adverse events" than users of equivalents made in the United States.</p>



<p>These adverse events included instances of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hospitalization-rates-for-the-flu-and-covid-19-are-strikingly-similar-among-children/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hospitalization</a>, disability and, in a few tragic cases, even death.</p>



<p>George Ball is an associate professor of operations and decision technologies at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.</p>



<p>“The FDA assures the public that all generics patterned after the same original drug should be equivalently safe and effective, however, this is not necessarily the case when it comes to generic drugs made in India,” said Professor Ball.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracing-generic-drugs-to-their-factories">Tracing generic drugs to their factories </h2>



<p>This study stands out not only for its findings but also for its exceptional methodology. Although the FDA was hesitant to disclose information about the manufacturing locations of the drugs, the researchers found a workaround. </p>



<p>By leveraging the Structured Product Labeling dataset, they successfully traced the drugs back to their factories of origin.</p>



<p>“Overcoming this lack of transparency of drug manufacturing location is one of the major accomplishments of our study,” said Professor Gray.</p>



<p>To ensure a fair comparison, the researchers matched those <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nanorobots-built-with-folded-dna-could-revolutionize-medicine/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">medicines</a> made in India with identical drugs produced in the United States.</p>



<p>These drugs were perfectly alike in every measure – active ingredients, dosage form, and administration route. Therefore, it would be an accurate interpretation to say, they were comparing "apples to apples."</p>



<p>The study considered 2,443 drugs from the United States and emerging economies. Significantly, 93% of these generic drugs were Indian-made. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-adverse-events-and-comparative-analysis">Adverse events and comparative analysis</h2>



<p>The researchers used the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) to identify events reported for people using generic drugs from India and those using their matched counterparts that were manufactured in the United States. </p>



<p>Only those reports listing the most severe outcomes like hospitalization, disability, and death were considered.</p>



<p>The number of severe adverse events associated with the use of generic drugs manufactured in India was 54% higher than the number for equivalent generic drugs that were manufactured in the United States.</p>



<p>The results were largely driven by drugs that have been on the market for longer. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/daily-dose-finasteride-magic-pill-regrows-hair-heals-prostate-boosts-heart-health/">Older drugs</a> were often found to have poorer quality.</p>



<p>“In the pharmaceutical industry, the older drugs get cheaper and cheaper and the competition gets more intense to hold down costs. That may result in operations and supply chain issues that can compromise drug quality,” explained Professor Gray.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-loopholes-in-the-inspection-process">Loopholes in the inspection process </h2>



<p>Despite these findings, the researchers caution against interpreting the results as a blanket indictment of offshore drug production.</p>



<p>“There are good manufacturers in India, there are bad manufacturers in the U.S., and we’re not advocating for ending offshore production of drugs or bashing India in any way. We believe this is a regulatory oversight issue that can be improved,” explained Professor Gray.</p>



<p>One of the major regulatory loopholes lies in the inspection process of these plants. While inspections of U.S.-based plants are unannounced, those in overseas locations such as India are prearranged.</p>



<p>This potential loophole may allow manufacturers to conceal problems, making it harder for the FDA to detect these issues. </p>



<p>Professor Gray suggested that making all inspections unannounced, worldwide, could significantly improve the situation. He also called for product labeling to give information about the country of manufacture.</p>



<p>"A key recommendation we make in this study is for the FDA to make drug manufacturing location, such as the country of manufacture, and drug quality, transparent for consumers. This can help create a market in which drug quality is incentivized more than it is today,” concluded Professor Ball.</p>



<p>The full study was published in the journal <em><a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/10591478251319691" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Production and Operations Management</a></em>.</p>

Generic drugs are not created equal, and a new study reveals why

<p>Fossils newly unearthed in southeastern Australia have upended long-held assumptions about dinosaur evolution, revealing the world’s oldest known megaraptorid and the first confirmed evidence of carcharodontosaurs on the continent.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These discoveries paint a vivid picture of an unusual predator hierarchy that once roamed the region during the Early Cretaceous, adding a crucial piece to the puzzle of dinosaur history.</p>



<p>The research was carried out by a team led by <a href="https://museumsvictoria.com.au/research-institute/">Museums Victoria Research Institute</a> and <a href="https://www.monash.edu/">Monash University</a> PhD student Jake Kotevski.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study focused on five <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-theropod-dinosaurs-thrived-in-polar-environments/">theropod</a> fossils found along Victoria’s coastline. They were collected in the upper Strzelecki (Bass Coast, dating back roughly 121.4–118 million years) and the Eumeralla Formation (Otway Coast, about 113–108 million years old).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dinosaurs-thriving-in-australia-nbsp">Dinosaurs thriving in Australia&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The newly studied remains suggest an unexpected arrangement of carnivorous dinosaurs. They indicate that large megaraptorids - measuring between six and seven meters long - coexisted alongside smaller carcharodontosaurs that reached only two to four meters in length, as well as the agile, meter-long unenlagiines (nicknamed “southern raptors”). </p>



<p>This stands in stark contrast to better-known ecosystems where carcharodontosaurs typically surpassed other predatory dinosaurs in size.</p>



<p>“The discovery of carcharodontosaurs in Australia is groundbreaking,” Kotevski said. “It’s fascinating to see how Victoria’s predator hierarchy diverged from South America, where carcharodontosaurs reached <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/t-rex-was-about-70-percent-bigger-than-we-thought/">Tyrannosaurus rex</a>-like sizes up to 13 metres, towering over megaraptorids. <p>He noted that the findings not only expand Australia’s theropod fossil record but offer compelling evidence of faunal interchange between Australia and South America through Antarctica during the Early Cretaceous.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Over time, such isolation could have led to distinct paths of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dinosaurs-evolved-feathers-for-much-more-than-just-flying/">evolutionary development</a>, explaining why Australian megaraptorids, rather than carcharodontosaurs, occupied the apex predator niche.</p>

<p>Beyond revealing hidden chapters of Australia’s dinosaur history, the study demonstrates the significance of museum collections in fueling new scientific breakthroughs. </p>

<p>Three of the fossils in this study were first identified between 2022 and 2023 by a Museums Victoria volunteer, Melissa Lowery, demonstrating the critical role that community members play in paleontology.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Male fruit flies buzzing around in a small, contained arena sounds like a pretty ordinary science experiment. Yet one group of researchers noticed something unusual about how some of them reacted to a spinning disk.</p>



<p>They observed that while many flies stayed away from the disk, a select few hopped onto it and stayed for surprising amounts of time. </p>



<p><a href="https://sciprofiles.com/profile/2253355" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Wolf Huetteroth</a> from the <a href="https://www.uni-leipzig.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Leipzig</a> notes that these findings could open new questions about how body awareness develops in living creatures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flies-spin-with-purpose">Flies spin with purpose</h2>



<p>Many people think of fruit flies as tiny <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insects-fruit-flies-smell-well-as-humans-with-much-less-nose-neurons/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">creatures</a> flitting around fruit bowls. <p>“Using several carousels, we generated and analyzed a total of around seven years of film data,” says Dr. <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Tilman-Triphan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tilman Triphan</a>, the first author of the study. </p>



<p>Researchers used several rotating platforms placed under a thin glass cover. Some flies dashed to the edge, but others returned to the carousel again and again.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-individual-preferences">Individual preferences</h2>



<p>A fraction of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fruit-flies-on-treadmills-video-shows-how-insects-walk-and-balance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flies</a> sought the disk and rode it in repeated sessions. Those individuals spent extended periods on the spinner, while their peers avoided it altogether. The behavior looked deliberate, rather than forced or random.</p>



<p>One aspect was the difference in how these seekers got onto the spinning surface. </p>



<p>“However, we were able to distinguish whether the flies had deliberately walked onto the carousel or jumped onto it in an uncoordinated way. This allowed us to show that unplanned visits to the carousel were rather atypical for the playing flies,” says co-author <a href="https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/about-us/our-staff/f/clara-ferreira/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Clara H. Ferreira</a>, an assistant Professor at <a href="https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Northumbria University</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-possible-value-of-body-sense">Possible value of body sense</h2>



<p>The repeated interaction with the moving disk seems to involve <a href="https://journals.physiology.org/doi/full/10.1152/physrev.00048.2011" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">proprioceptive feedback</a>, which refers to the body’s sense of position and motion.</p>



<p>If some flies are actively seeking the extra sensation, it might be fulfilling a hidden benefit. This is reminiscent of how certain mammals, like <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9861614/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rats</a>, engage in rough-and-tumble routines that refine their coordination.</p>



<p>Some insects ended up swapping mealtime for more spins on the carousel. That trade-off hints at a possible reward gained from the turning <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dragonflies-develop-waxy-coating-to-withstand-warmer-climates/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">motion</a>. </p>



<p>The interesting part is that these insects showed no direct advantage other than what seems to be playful amusement.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flies-spin-by-choice-not-force">Flies spin by choice, not force</h2>



<p>Natural curiosity is often observed in higher animals, but insects rarely get credit for it. </p>



<p>Here, the setting was calm, with continuous observation over days to capture genuine conduct. There were no artificial triggers that forced the flies onto the disk.</p>



<p>The team set up the environment to ensure no threat forced the flies to remain. If the spinning platform caused anxiety, they could easily walk away. </p>



<p>Instead, some made a personal choice to return. This self-directed action adds weight to the suggestion of a real <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/flies-are-more-vulnerable-to-climate-change-than-bees/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">playful attitude</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-it-matter-for-humans">Why does it matter for humans?</h2>



<p>“This could help us to find out how we humans also develop efficient self-awareness of our bodies,” says Huetteroth. </p>



<p>The clue lies in how the spinning motion may sharpen the brain’s ability to map physical space. Because the flies appear to seek out extra movement, they might be training themselves to adapt and respond to unexpected motion.</p>



<p>Similar responses appear in many species that enjoy roller coasters or spinning rides. Researchers believe the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-human-brain-connects-unrelated-concepts-through-reasoning/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain learns</a> from these experiences, reinforcing internal models of balance and orientation.</p>



<p>If a small insect displays a version of this, it might show that the drive to engage in such activity evolved long ago.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flies-spin-despite-easy-alternatives">Flies spin despite easy alternatives</h2>



<p>The flies had easy access to food and water. They also had corners to rest without interruption. Despite these calmer options, some crawled over for a spin. </p>



<p>That behavior did not enhance survival, which points toward a motivational factor besides hunger or fear.</p>



<p>Scientists have used <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/5787388/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">open-field tests</a> to measure caution or stress in animals. </p>



<p>Usually, creatures stay near edges when anxious. The carousel-seeking flies, however, went to the center and stayed. This breaks usual fear-driven patterns.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-next">What happens next?</h2>



<p>So far, scientists have only glimpsed how fruit flies pick between exploration, feeding, and spinning. The genetic tools available in fruit <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chemicals-are-changing-insects-in-subtle-yet-deadly-ways/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flies</a> might shine more light on the neural wiring behind this playful bent. </p>



<p>Perhaps targeted genetic studies will uncover exactly which circuits reward them for spinning.</p>



<p>In time, deeper understanding could reveal ways that controlled motion shapes a creature’s internal map. </p>



<p>That concept might prove relevant to other animals, including humans learning how to handle complex movement or interactive environments.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
