<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>

<p>Self-deception plays a bigger role in our lives than we might realize - especially when it comes to assessing our own achievements and skills.</p>



<p>A recent study exposed the fascinating tendency that humans have to cheat and then inflate their own sense of success, while genuinely believing in their abilities.</p>



<p>In a twist of irony, this self-deception goes even further - it actually makes people feel smarter and more accomplished.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-puzzle-of-self-deception">The puzzle of self-deception</h2>



<p>Dr. Sara Dommer, an assistant professor of marketing at <a href="https://www.psu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Penn State</a>, set out to explore why people cheat on tasks that offer purely intrinsic rewards, such as the satisfaction of solving crossword puzzles or counting calories accurately.</p>



<p>“I found that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/people-with-power-are-more-likely-to-cheat-on-their-partners/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">people do cheat</a> when there are no extrinsic incentives, like money or prizes, but [only] intrinsic rewards, like feeling better about yourself," said Dr. Dommer.</p>



<p>Intriguingly, the feel-good factor only worked when individuals engaged in what Dr. Dommer refers to as "diagnostic self-deception." </p>



<p>In simpler terms, the participants had to convince themselves that they weren't cheating. "Doing so allows me to feel smarter, more accomplished or healthier," explained Dommer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cheating-to-feel-healthy">Cheating to feel healthy</h2>



<p>To understand this phenomenon, Dommer conducted four distinct studies. In the first, undergraduate students from Penn State were asked to input calorie counts into a food tracking app. </p>



<p>The study revealed that students without specific calorie information tended to enter fewer calories than those with complete information.</p>



<p>One possible explanation? They were <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-motivates-students-to-cheat-in-online-exams/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cheating</a> themselves to feel healthier.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-self-deception-and-perception">Self-deception and perception</h2>



<p>A similar pattern emerged in the second study, which involved an online IQ test.</p>



<p>Participants who were allowed to cheat reported higher IQ scores. Furthermore, they genuinely believed their performance was due to their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humor-is-a-clear-sign-of-intelligence-among-children/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">intelligence</a> - not to the fact that they had cheated.</p>



<p>A third test, which was based on a word unscrambling task, further reinforced the self-deception phenomenon.</p>



<p>The participants who cheated not only reported unscrambling more words but were also more convinced that their performance was a true reflection of their intelligence.</p>



<p>“The thinking goes, ‘I’m performing well because I’m smart, not because the task allowed me to cheat,'” said Dr. Dommer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-introducing-uncertainty-to-curb-cheating">Introducing uncertainty to curb cheating</h2>



<p>A fourth experiment aimed to see if increased uncertainty about one's financial literacy skills would deter participants from cheating. </p>



<p>Indeed, when faced with the sobering fact that most American adults cannot pass a basic financial literacy test, participants were less likely to inflate their scores. </p>



<p>“How do we stop people from engaging in diagnostic self-deception and get a more accurate representation of who they are? One way is to draw their attention to uncertainty around the trait itself. This seems to mitigate the effect," noted Dr. Dommer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-many-faces-of-cheating">The many faces of cheating</h2>



<p>The assumption that cheating is always a strategic and intentional act is not entirely accurate. As Dommer's research highlights, cheating can occur unconsciously as a means to boost one's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-does-digital-technology-influence-our-sense-of-self/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">self-perception</a>.</p>



<p>However, it's essential to recognize the potential harm of these "illusory self-beliefs," especially when they affect crucial aspects like financial or physical health. </p>



<p>"When a person engages in diagnostic self-deception, they may underuse products and services designed to help them. This is why it’s important to be aware of illusory beliefs and strive to seek accurate self-assessments," said Dr. Dommer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-beyond-the-illusion-striking-a-balance">Beyond the illusion: Striking a balance</h2>



<p>While self-deception can offer a temporary confidence boost, it raises an important question - how can individuals balance healthy self-perception with an honest evaluation of their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/boredom-can-make-children-more-creative-and-teach-new-skills/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">skills</a>?</p>



<p>Recognizing when self-deception is at play is the first step. Encouraging self-reflection, seeking objective feedback, and relying on concrete data rather than gut feelings can help counteract misleading self-beliefs.</p>



<p>Moreover, the findings highlight the broader implications of diagnostic self-deception beyond personal assessments.</p>



<p>From workplace performance to health management and financial planning, an inflated sense of ability can make a person overlook weaknesses and miss opportunities for growth.</p>



<p>Understanding this subtle but powerful psychological tendency might just be the key to fostering greater self-awareness - and ultimately, making more informed decisions in everyday life.</p>

Humans and self-deception: How cheating ourselves can make us feel smarter

<p>They start their journey on sandy shores, scuttling toward the waves at barely a few inches long. Some people assume these little sea turtles vanish after that, drifting in the open water for years without actively swimming or controlling where they go.</p>



<p>In a recent <a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2013.3039" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> led by Kate Mansfield from the University of Central Florida, researchers have pieced together what happens during the early, lesser-known part of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-turtles-show-signs-of-recovery-but-conservation-issues-remain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">turtles’ lives</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-baby-turtles-is-difficult">Tracking baby turtles is difficult</h2>



<p>Researchers recently uncovered the whereabouts of young sea turtles by using carefully designed satellite trackers. They found that tiny turtles show more control over their movement than once believed.</p>



<p>“We’ve had massive data gaps about the early baby to toddler life stages of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-sea-turtle-day-celebrating-100-million-years-of-majesty/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sea</a> turtles,” said Mansfield. She explained that this phase was rarely observed in detail.</p>



<p>"Known as the sea turtle ‘lost years,' few data exist on the in-water behavior of young, oceanic-stage sea turtles," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainfall-impacts-the-size-of-sea-turtle-hatchlings/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Young</a> turtles shed their outer shell layers quickly. This makes it tough to secure tracking devices long enough to gather good data.</p>



<p>Engineers refined lightweight solar-powered tags for weeks or months of location data without hindering the turtles.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-young-sea-turtles-don-t-just-drift">Young sea turtles don’t just drift</h2>



<p>Scientists once believed baby turtles went with the flow of ocean currents. Field data are now challenging that long-standing notion.</p>



<p>“What we’ve uncovered is that the turtles are actually swimming,” said Nathan Putman, an ecologist at LGL Ecological Research Associates in Texas.</p>



<p>The analysis compared drifting buoys with small turtles and showed that many turtles moved on their own instead of washing ashore.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-baby-turtles-choose-where-to-swim">Baby turtles choose where to swim</h2>



<p>The difference between turtles and free-floating buoys grew clearer over the course of each tracking period. Drifting objects often ended up stuck on beaches, yet many turtles did not.</p>



<p>“This tiny little hatchling is actually making its own decisions about where it wants to go in the ocean and what it wants to avoid,” said Bryan Wallace, a wildlife ecologist at <a href="https://ecolibriumsolar.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ecolibrium in Colorado</a>.</p>



<p>The new findings suggest that turtles choose routes that match their needs for food and safe temperatures.</p>



<p>"The paths of our tracked neonate loggerheads were environmentally constrained. No turtles moved into lethally cold waters," noted the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-habitats-of-sea-turtles-revealed">Hidden habitats of sea turtles revealed</h2>



<p>Tag data also showed young sea turtles in areas once assumed too close to shore for this stage. Though many do wander across open waters, some appear comfortable dipping into shallower spots.</p>



<p>The researchers noted that such varied paths challenge the old definition of an exclusively oceanic childhood. This highlights the importance of regions near the continental shelf for four types of endangered sea <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/leatherback-sea-turtles-where-the-worlds-largest-turtles-go-to-eat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">turtles</a>.</p>



<p>It took years to refine solar-powered tags that could function on small, rapidly growing shells. Early versions fell off too fast or failed to recharge in ocean conditions.</p>



<p>“For years, the technology couldn’t match the dream,” said Jeffrey Seminoff, a marine biologist at NOAA who was not involved in the study. </p>



<p>Continued collaboration between ecologists and engineers is bringing once-hidden animal behavior to light.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conservation-efforts-for-sea-turtles">Conservation efforts for sea turtles </h2>



<p>The findings spotlight part of a creature’s life that was overshadowed for decades by hatchling races to the sea and nesting adults on familiar beaches. </p>



<p>Young turtles do more than just drift - they swim toward the open ocean, while others linger over the continental shelf.</p>



<p>“It’s not that the sea turtles were ever lost, but that we had lost track of them,” said Jeanette Wyneken at Florida Atlantic University. This deeper understanding may guide conservation efforts in areas where turtles feed or rest before reaching adulthood.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-how-baby-turtles-swim">Rethinking how baby turtles swim</h2>



<p>The research suggests that the early life stage of sea turtles is not just a dispersal period. The study captures the reality that little turtles roam widely and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-sea-turtle-day-a-tribute-to-resilience-and-conservation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">adapt</a> their routes to changing conditions.</p>



<p>They might spot floating algae to seek shelter, or they might veer away from predator hotspots. Even in vast waters, these hatchlings can find ways to survive on their own terms.</p>



<p>The study is published in <a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2013.3039" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Proceedings of the Royal Society B</em></a>.</p>

<p>M87* is the first <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/evidence-of-massive-early-universe-black-hole-stuns-astronomers/">black hole</a> ever photographed. It sits in the center of the massive galaxy <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/hubble/science/explore-the-night-sky/hubble-messier-catalog/messier-87/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Messier 87</a>, which is located about 340 quintillion miles from Earth.</p>



<p>This cosmic giant, which holds roughly 6.5 billion times the mass of our Sun, grabbed global attention when scientists shared its portrait in 2019. </p>



<p>Researchers have now revisited their data to explore its swirling environment and discover fresh details about the hectic world near its event horizon.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-details-about-black-hole-m87">New details about black hole M87*</h2>



<p>“By observing the evolving black hole and comparing it with progressive observations, we have made an important step forward in understanding the complex dynamics that govern it,” said research coordinator <a href="https://scholar.lib.ntnu.edu.tw/en/persons/hung-yi-pu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hung-Yi Pu</a> of National Taiwan Normal University, at the end of the team’s 2018 follow-up analyses. </p>



<p>Scientists saw that the black hole’s spin axis appears to point away from Earth. They also found that the disk of hot gas <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rare-gamma-ray-flare-unleashed-from-a-supermassive-black-hole/">orbiting M87*</a> may move in a direction opposite to the black hole’s own rotation. </p>



<p>This retrograde movement seems to lead to more intense shaking of energetic particles, which stirs up a volatile zone where light flickers more dramatically.</p>



<p>The center of brightness in the ring has also shifted by around 30 degrees since the 2017 snapshot. This was the first time researchers confirmed such a major movement, suggesting that local turbulence is common in these extreme environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-turbulent-plasma">Turbulent plasma</h2>



<p>Black holes pull in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/black-hole-jets-m87-cause-stars-to-erupt-as-they-pass-through-galaxies/">hot plasma</a>, which includes charged particles that generate radio waves scientists can detect. </p>



<p>To capture this signal, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) uses a worldwide network of antennas that creates a planet-sized radio dish. </p>



<p>This approach revealed subtle changes in brightness patterns surrounding the black hole. The updated analysis offers a closer look at how energetic matter funnels around M87*, showing that friction and magnetic fields may twist the motion of gas at close range.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spiraling-chaos">Spiraling chaos</h2>



<p>“Our analyses suggest that this latter scenario, in which the gas rotates against the rotation of the black hole, is the one that best explains the variations observed over the years," explained researcher <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Mariafelicia-De-Laurentis">Ma</a><a href="https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Mariafelicia-De-Laurentis" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ri</a><a href="https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Mariafelicia-De-Laurentis">afelicia De Laurentis</a> of the University of Naples Federico II.</p>



<p>"This is because the retrograde motion generates a more turbulent and unstable environment, favoring more marked fluctuations in the light emission of the ring surrounding the black hole.” </p>



<p>These observations help reveal how space-time warps at short distances from the black hole. Astronomers suspect that this turbulent swirl might be a common feature around many supermassive black holes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-black-hole-m87-matter">Why does black hole M87* matter?</h2>



<p>The EHT team is now reviewing data collected in 2021 and 2022. The hope is that more frequent snapshots will highlight how the plasma ring evolves under ever-changing conditions near the edge of the event horizon.</p>



<p>Their goal is to refine tests of <a href="https://sites.pitt.edu/~jdnorton/teaching/HPS_0410/chapters/general_relativity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Einstein’s theory of general relativity</a>, which has held up against many past challenges. </p>



<p>Scientists anticipate that additional observations will further check this theory in settings where gravity crushes matter with unimaginable force.</p>



<p>M87* remains an ideal example of what happens when gravity rules over massive amounts of gas in a compact volume of space. </p>



<p>Understanding how material dances around it could help clarify how galaxies grow and shape their surroundings.</p>



<p>This wild zone also shows how black holes launch energetic jets that extend far into intergalactic space. </p>



<p>The orientation of M87*’s axis, combined with data on the swirling ring, might explain the source of jets often seen in radio images of the Messier 87 galaxy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-watching-the-future">Watching the future</h2>



<p>As technology improves, astronomers can make sharper, more consistent observations. Teams around the world are adding new sites to the <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/2041-8213/ab0ec7/pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EHT array</a>, hoping to sharpen images of M87* and other cosmic heavyweights.</p>



<p>Experts see these ongoing projects as a chance to expand models of how black holes behave. A better understanding might reveal patterns that appear not only in M87* but in other supermassive objects at the centers of galaxies.</p>

<p>Killer whales, their primary natural predators, are intelligent and highly skilled hunters. Yet, despite their sharp senses, some baleen whales manage to avoid their attacks.</p>



<p>New research from the University of Washington sheds light on a fascinating survival strategy. Some baleen <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/these-marine-mammals-killer-whales-dolphins-permanently-lost-ability-to-ever-walk-again/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">whales</a> call at frequencies so deep that killer whales cannot hear them. </p>



<p>This unique adaptation influences everything from migration to mating, revealing how fear shapes the behavior of these giants of the sea.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fight-or-flight-dilemma-of-whales">Fight or flight dilemma of whales</h2>



<p>Baleen whales, known for their filter-feeding systems, differ from their toothed relatives in behavior and survival strategies. </p>



<p>Unlike dolphins or sperm whales, which often live in large, social pods, many baleen <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-helps-humans-have-20-minute-conversation-with-humpback-whale-named-twain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">whale species</a> lead more solitary lives. When faced with an attack, they must decide whether to fight or flee.</p>



<p>Some species, like humpbacks and gray whales, choose to stand their ground. They rely on their maneuverability and group defense to deter predators. Others, like blue and fin whales, opt for speed, escaping into the vastness of the open ocean. </p>



<p>This divide between fight and flight species plays a crucial role in shaping their lifestyles, habitats, and even the way they sing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mystery-of-whale-songs">Mystery of whale songs</h2>



<p>Whale songs are among the most haunting and complex sounds in nature. Scientists have long studied these vocalizations to understand their purpose. </p>



<p>While it is well known that whales use songs to attract mates and communicate across great distances, one question remained: why don’t killer <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-have-20-minute-conversation-with-a-humpback-whale-named-twain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">whales</a> track these calls to hunt them down?</p>



<p>The answer lies in frequency. Killer whales have a hearing range that starts at 100 hertz, meaning they cannot detect sounds below this threshold. </p>



<p>Some baleen whales, particularly those in the flight category, have adapted by producing ultra-low-frequency calls that remain completely undetectable to their predators. These deep-voiced species include blue, fin, sei, Bryde’s, and minke whales.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-songs-help-whales-hide">How songs help whales hide</h2>



<p>Trevor Branch, professor of aquatic and fishery sciences at the <a href="https://www.washington.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Washington</a>, led a study analyzing the relationship between whale songs and predation risk. </p>



<p>The research combined existing knowledge of killer whale hearing with studies on baleen whale vocalizations. By modeling how sound moves through the ocean, Professor Branch was able to determine which species remain acoustically hidden.</p>



<p>It turns out that the calls of flight species rarely travel more than a kilometer before fading. This means that even if killer whales could hear them, they would still be difficult to track. </p>



<p>Meanwhile, the fight species - right, bowhead, gray, and humpback whales - produce higher-frequency calls that can be detected from much greater distances.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-whales-survival-strategy-hidden-in-songs">Whales survival strategy hidden in songs</h2>



<p>The idea that baleen whales rely on fight or flight responses is not new, but the role of sound in their survival adds a new layer of understanding. Could these deep songs serve as a defense mechanism? </p>



<p>This concept, known as "acoustic crypsis," suggests that some whales evolved to sing in a way that keeps them hidden from predators.</p>



<p>“But these super-loud songs could expose them and their mates to killer whale attack. And this is where acoustic crypsis comes in: singing at low frequencies that are impossible, or very difficult, for killer whales to hear,” Branch said.</p>



<p>This survival strategy highlights how even the most massive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humpback-whale-travels-farther-than-any-mammal-ever-recorded/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">creatures</a> on Earth must adapt to threats. By calling at deep frequencies, flight species can continue their essential communication while reducing the risk of drawing unwanted attention.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-habitat-influences-defense">How habitat influences defense</h2>



<p>The fight-or-flight divide among baleen whales also affects where they live. Fight species tend to migrate and give birth in coastal areas. </p>



<p>These shallow waters provide some protection, as they allow group defense strategies to work more effectively. Their slow-swimming bodies may make them vulnerable, but their ability to maneuver quickly gives them an edge when fending off an attack.</p>



<p>In contrast, flight species thrive in the open ocean. Their sleek, powerful bodies allow them to escape quickly when danger approaches. </p>



<p>These whales spread out over vast distances, making it harder for killer whales to find them. Their survival depends on speed and silence rather than confrontation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-trade-offs-in-feeding-and-mating">Trade-offs in feeding and mating</h2>



<p>Choosing where to live comes with trade-offs. Coastal waters offer some protection from predators, but they also provide less food. Fight <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ship-routes-overlap-with-92-of-whale-habitats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> must compete for limited resources, while flight species, living in more isolated open waters, have access to greater food supplies.</p>



<p>However, mating presents the opposite challenge. It is much easier for fight species to find partners when gathered in the same location. </p>



<p>Flight species, scattered across thousands of miles, must rely on their songs to attract mates. This explains why their calls are long and repetitive, increasing the chances of being heard over vast distances.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-fear-in-whale-behavior">Role of fear in whale behavior</h2>



<p>The findings of this research suggest that fear plays a significant role in shaping whale behavior. Every aspect of their lives, from where they breed to how they communicate, is influenced by the threat of predation.</p>



<p>“It just never occurred to me that some whales sing low to avoid killer <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/whale-sharks-use-offshore-oil-rigs-as-food-stops-during-migration-harming-conservation-efforts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">whales</a>, but the more I looked at this, the more I realized that every aspect of their behavior is influenced by the fear of predation,” said Professor Branch.</p>



<p>This hidden war of sound beneath the waves highlights how even the ocean’s largest creatures must navigate the dangers of their world. By understanding songs of whales, scientists continue to uncover the secrets of survival in the deep.</p>

<p>Galaxies often collide and interact over vast timescales, reshaping their structures in unpredictable ways. Some merge, others drift past one another, but few experience a direct impact through the core. </p>



<p>Recently, the Bullseye galaxy, officially known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/bullseye-galaxy_LEDA-1313424_9-rings_hubble_NASA_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LEDA 1313424</a>, has revealed a stunning cosmic event.</p>



<p>NASA’s <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/hubble/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hubble Space Telescope</a> captured this rare phenomenon, showing the Bullseye galaxy marked by nine distinct rings. </p>



<p>This discovery changes how astronomers view galaxy interactions, providing a rare glimpse into the rippling effects of a high-speed collision.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-dive-through-the-bullseye-galaxy">A dive through the Bullseye galaxy</h2>



<p>A much smaller blue dwarf <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/hubble-spots-a-supernova-in-the-constellation-gemini/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxy</a> pierced straight through the Bullseye’s heart, leaving behind an intricate pattern of expanding rings. These rings, filled with newborn stars, resemble ripples in a pond. </p>



<p>While previous studies of ring galaxies identified only two or three rings at most, this system has shattered that record.</p>



<p>The process behind this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/100-years-ago-edwin-hubble-proved-the-milky-way-is-not-the-only-galaxy-in-the-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extraordinary formation</a> mirrors events found in nature. Consider the Northern Gannet, a seabird known for its high-speed dives into the ocean. </p>



<p>From as high as 100 feet, it plummets into the water in pursuit of fish. Its pointed beak and tightly folded wings reduce splash, but the impact still sends tiny ripples outward. Now, scale that scenario to galactic proportions.</p>



<p>Instead of a bird, imagine a tiny galaxy plunging into a much larger one. Instead of water, envision a vast galactic disk filled with stars, gas, and dust. </p>



<p>Fifty million years ago, when the blue dwarf galaxy passed through the core of the Bullseye, the cosmic ripples left in its wake pushed material both inward and outward, shaping the structure of the larger <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hubble-captures-a-blue-lurker-multi-star-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxy</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rings-in-the-bullseye-galaxy">Rings in the Bullseye galaxy</h2>



<p>Seeing such a phenomenon in detail is rare. Both the Hubble Space Telescope and the <a href="https://keckobservatory.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">W. M. Keck Observatory</a> in Hawaii confirmed the existence of nine rings in the Bullseye galaxy. </p>



<p>This is more than double the number seen in any other known ring galaxy. Hubble also identified the intruding galaxy, which now sits to the left of the Bullseye.</p>



<p>"This was a serendipitous discovery," said Imad Pasha, the lead researcher and a doctoral student at <a href="https://www.yale.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yale University</a>. "I was looking at a ground-based imaging survey and when I saw a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/andromeda-galaxy-the-violent-history-of-our-closest-cosmic-neighbor/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxy</a> with several clear rings, I was immediately drawn to it. I had to stop to investigate it."</p>



<p>The name "Bullseye" perfectly describes the galaxy’s appearance, with each ring resembling a mark left by a cosmic arrow. </p>



<p>The rings are not merely decorative features; they represent powerful waves of star formation triggered by the dwarf galaxy’s high-speed passage.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-brief-moment-in-history">A brief moment in history </h2>



<p>The researchers believe that this moment in the Bullseye galaxy’s history is brief.</p>



<p>"We’re catching the Bullseye at a very special moment in time. There's a very narrow window after the impact when a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/webb-telescope-confirms-hubble-constant-our-understanding-of-universe-expansion-very-wrong/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxy</a> like this would have so many rings," noted study co-author Pieter G. van Dokkum, a professor at Yale.</p>



<p>Galactic interactions are common, but a direct hit through the center is rare. The smaller galaxy’s straight trajectory caused material in the Bullseye to shift dramatically, creating the distinct concentric rings. Each ring marks a wave of compressed gas, leading to the birth of new stars.</p>



<p>For perspective, the Milky Way spans about 100,000 light-years across. The Bullseye galaxy, at 250,000 light-years in diameter, is more than twice as large. Its massive size makes the rings even more striking, as they continue expanding outward.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-confirming-the-ninth-ring">Confirming the ninth ring</h2>



<p>Hubble’s crisp imaging allowed researchers to pinpoint most of the rings, many of which are clustered near the center. </p>



<p>"This would have been impossible without Hubble," Pasha explained. The telescope’s high resolution provided an unparalleled look at the Bullseye’s structure, revealing intricate details invisible to ground-based observatories.</p>



<p>The Keck Observatory in Hawaii played a crucial role in confirming one additional ring, bringing the total to nine. Researchers believe a tenth ring may have once existed but has since faded beyond detectability. </p>



<p>If this lost ring still remains in some form, it would be located three times farther than the outermost ring captured by Hubble.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-confirming-theories-about-ring-formation">Confirming theories about ring formation</h2>



<p>The Bullseye galaxy aligns almost perfectly with long-standing theories about ring formation. Models predict that a galaxy hit in this way should produce a series of outward-moving rings, and this is exactly what astronomers observed.</p>



<p>"That theory was developed for the day that someone saw so many rings," van Dokkum said. "It is immensely gratifying to confirm this long-standing prediction with the Bullseye galaxy."</p>



<p>Hubble’s image provides an angled view of the rings, making them appear unevenly spaced. If seen directly from above, they would form nearly perfect circles - with the innermost rings packed closely together and the outermost ones more widely spaced.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-ripple-effect-in-space">A ripple effect in space</h2>



<p>To understand how these rings formed, imagine a pebble dropped into a pond. The first ripple spreads out widest, while others follow at regular intervals. </p>



<p>In the Bullseye galaxy, the first two rings likely formed rapidly and expanded outward. Later rings appeared in sequence, slightly offset by the continued movement of gas and dust.</p>



<p>The passage of the blue dwarf galaxy affected the earliest rings the most, triggering a chain reaction that lasted millions of years. </p>



<p>While individual stars remained largely undisturbed, entire groups of stars piled up to form the visible rings.</p>



<p>Meanwhile, gas was carried outward and mixed with dust, fueling the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/universe-is-expanding-faster-than-science-can-explain-hubble-tension-physics-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">creation</a> of new stars.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-of-the-bullseye-galaxy">Evolution of the Bullseye galaxy </h2>



<p>Despite the clarity of this discovery, many questions remain. Astronomers want to determine which stars existed before the dwarf galaxy’s arrival and which formed afterward. </p>



<p>This will help refine models of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unknown-factors-are-accelerating-the-expansion-of-the-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxy</a> evolution and provide insight into the long-term fate of the Bullseye.</p>



<p>Over time, some of the rings will fade as stars move out of alignment. However, the larger structure of the Bullseye will persist for millions of years, giving astronomers plenty of time to study its evolution.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insights-into-galactic-interactions">Insights into galactic interactions</h2>



<p>Although this discovery was unexpected, it sets the stage for more findings in the future. Advanced telescopes will soon provide even greater insights into galactic interactions. </p>



<p>"Once NASA's Nancy Grace <a href="https://roman.gsfc.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Roman Space Telescope</a> begins science operations, interesting objects will pop out much more easily," said van Dokkum. "We will learn how rare these spectacular events really are."</p>



<p>The research not only confirms theories about ring formation but also raises new questions about the physics of galactic collisions. .</p>



<p>The team's findings were published in <em><a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/2041-8213/ad9f5c" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Astrophysical Journal Letters</a></em>.</p>

<p>Rising global temperatures may render extensive regions of the planet too hot for human survival over the coming decades, according to a new study led by King’s College London.</p>



<p>The research shows that if worldwide warming surpasses 2°C above pre-industrial levels, the proportion of land experiencing unsurvivable heat will triple, spanning an area nearly as large as the United States.</p>



<p>These extremely <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/2024-shatters-heat-records-earths-hottest-year-is-here/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">high temperatures</a> would endanger healthy young adults (aged 18–60), pushing their bodies past the point where they can regulate internal heat - even with adequate shade and hydration. </p>



<p>Moreover, older adults (60+) would be at high risk across nearly 35% of the global land surface.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heat-thresholds-for-human-survival">Heat thresholds for human survival</h2>



<p>Study lead author Tom Matthews is a senior lecturer in Environmental Geography at King’s College London.</p>



<p>“Our findings show the potentially deadly consequences if <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-volcanic-past-reveals-the-shocking-reality-of-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global warming</a> reaches 2°C. Unsurvivable heat thresholds, which so far have only been exceeded briefly for older adults in the hottest regions on Earth, are likely to emerge even for younger adults,” said Matthews.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“In such conditions, prolonged outdoor exposure - even for those in the shade, subject to a strong breeze, and well hydrated - would be expected to cause lethal heatstroke. It represents a step-change in heat-mortality risk.”</p>



<p>With 2023 recorded as the first full year averaging more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial norms, many scientists caution that 2°C could be reached by the middle to latter half of this century if present trends remain unchecked.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-rise-of-unsurvivable-heat">The rise of unsurvivable heat </h2>



<p>The researchers connect physical climate science to human heat-mortality risks by focusing on two key thresholds:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Uncompensable heat - A critical point where the human body cannot effectively release heat, resulting in a perilous increase in core temperature.</li>



<li>Unsurvivable heat - The point at which core body temperature rises to 42°C within six hours, invariably resulting in fatal outcomes.</li>
</ul>



<p>Between 1994 and 2023, about 2% of Earth’s land area exceeded the uncompensable threshold for healthy adults under 60. By contrast, over 20% of global land already reached those levels for older adults during periods of intense heat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deaths-from-extreme-heat">Deaths from extreme heat</h2>



<p>According to the experts, since 2000, more than 260,000 people have died from extreme heat during major <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mapping-marine-heatwaves-to-understand-their-impacts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heatwaves</a>, a finding highlighting the scale of heat-related dangers.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The most lethal incidents - Europe’s 2003 and 2022 heatwaves, along with the 2010 Russian heatwave - together were responsible for nearly 200,000 fatalities.</p>



<p>Up to now, unsurvivable heat has appeared only briefly in Earth’s hottest locales, but experts predict a significant expansion of these extreme temperatures if global warming intensifies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-severe-consequences-of-global-warming">Severe consequences of global warming</h2>



<p>Although 2°C of warming carries serious risks, the study also indicates that a 4–5°C rise could be catastrophic. Older adults may face uncompensable heat over 60% of Earth’s land during extreme hot spells, while younger adults could encounter unsurvivable heat in the most sweltering subtropical zones.</p>



<p>Moreover, at 4°C above pre-industrial levels, around 40% of the globe would regularly endure uncompensable heat, restricting tolerable conditions largely to high-latitude and cooler mid-latitude areas.</p>



<p>Such projections place regions like Saharan Africa, South Asia, and parts of the Middle East in particular jeopardy, where even limited outdoor exposure might become life-threatening.</p>



<p>“At around 4°C of warming above pre-industrial levels, uncompensable heat for adults would affect about 40% of the global land area, with only the high latitudes and the cooler regions of the mid-latitudes remaining unaffected,” Matthews explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urgency-for-climate-adaptation-nbsp">Urgency for climate adaptation&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Recognizing these thresholds is pivotal for evaluating the potential human toll of escalating temperatures and for guiding adaptation strategies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While rapid cuts in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenhouse-gas-emissions-reach-another-all-time-high/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greenhouse gas emissions</a> remain essential, the study emphasizes the need to protect vulnerable groups through measures such as:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Revamping urban design to mitigate heat via increased greenery and reflective surfaces.</li>



<li>Boosting cooling infrastructure, from widespread air conditioning to designated cooling centers.</li>



<li>Ensuring sufficient water and resource availability in heat-prone regions.</li>
</ul>



<p>“Interdisciplinary work is vital to improving our understanding of unprecedented heat’s deadly potential and how it can be reduced,” noted Matthews.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As more of the planet experiences outdoor conditions too hot for our physiology, it will be essential that people have reliable access to cooler environments to shelter from the heat.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extreme-heat-and-human-survival">Extreme heat and human survival</h2>



<p>Ultimately, the report clarifies that rising global temperatures are a direct menace to human survival, not merely an environmental concern. If 2°C of warming is reached, massive portions of the planet may become too hot for younger adults engaging in normal outdoor activities.&nbsp;</p>



<p>At 4°C, almost half of the world could confront periods of inescapable heat, rendering these regions effectively uninhabitable.</p>



<p>The findings underscore an urgent call for global mitigation efforts as well as strategic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-power-of-imagination-in-climate-change-adaptation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate adaptation</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Without bold intervention to curb emissions and shield populations from extreme heat, the deadly consequences of climate change could become an enduring reality - one that fundamentally alters how and where people can live safely on our planet.</p>

<p>A new biomedical robot measuring just 0.95 millimeters (roughly 0.04 inches) in diameter has captured attention across the medical community. It is 60 percent smaller than similar instruments currently in use and promises more precise, minimally invasive surgery.</p>



<p>The tiny device has been developed at the School of Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology <a href="https://seng.hkust.edu.hk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">(HKUST)</a>. The research team was led by Yajing Shen, an associate professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering.</p>



<p>The scientists tackled the challenge of creating a tool that combines ultra-compact size with fine-tuned navigation and various therapeutic functions.</p>

<p>Experts in robotics emphasize that smaller instruments pose fewer risks of injuring sensitive tissues. Delicate pathways can then be probed without large incisions or cumbersome endoscopes that obscure surgical views.</p>

<p>This ultra-compact surgical robot features multiple advanced components that work together in one tight layout. An optical fiber assembly captures images, while a microscopic 3D printing process produces a hollow skeleton that holds fibers and tools.</p>



<p>The engineers have coated it using a special magnetic spray technique, such that a functionalized skin is formed. This allows magnetic steering from outside the patient, which gives physicians a non-invasive way to guide the device.</p>



<p>A thin, gel layer covers the exterior to decrease friction and ensure smooth travel of the robot through winding channels. All of these steps aim to keep the robot tiny yet powerful.</p>



<p>At less than 0.04 inches across, it fits into places that many clinicians have never been able to reach with standard instruments, thus addressing a longstanding problem in surgical technology.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-endoscopic-images-and-surgical-precision">Endoscopic images and surgical precision</h2>



<p>In addition to its petite form, the <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-55199-6" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">device</a> achieves approximately 30 micrometers of positional accuracy. This level of control helps surgeons target precise spots without straying into surrounding tissues.</p>



<p>Along with its accuracy, the robot detects blockages at distances up to about 9.4 millimeters (0.37 inches). This figure is roughly a tenfold increase over older endoscopic robots, which often fell short when navigating or scanning for obstructions.</p>



<p>In addition, a broad field of view - around 25 times larger than some conventional systems - lets doctors gather detailed images from a single vantage point. This is particularly useful in branching areas where strong visual feedback is needed to prevent collisions or misplacements.</p>



<p>Such imaging and obstacle detection capacities are crucial when weaving through body structures that branch unpredictably. Enhanced awareness can give physicians more confidence in exploring these obscure regions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lab-evaluations-and-real-tissue-tests">Lab evaluations and real tissue tests</h2>



<p>The researchers assessed the robot in <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/in-vitro-studies#:~:text=In%20vitro%20studies%20in%20experimental,From%3A%20Animal%20Biotechnology%2C%202014" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">in vitro studies</a> of <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34547790/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bronchial networks</a>, and confirmed smooth motion control. They then tested it on extracted pig lungs, and found it could gather images and perform minor treatments where standard scopes struggle.</p>



<p>“Small-scale continuum robots hold promise for interventional diagnosis and treatment, yet existing models often struggle with compactness, precise navigation, and visualized functional treatment all in one,” said Professor Shen.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-opportunities-for-specialized-treatments">Opportunities for specialized treatments</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-blood-test-diagnoses-heart-attacks-in-minutes-not-hours/">Early detection</a> often means better outcomes for patients. <p>Smaller incisions generally mean less pain, lower infection risk, and quicker healing. The robot could decrease surgery trauma by limiting how much tissue is moved or cut.</p>



<p>Once inside, it can complete multiple tasks in one session, limiting the need for additional procedures. This efficiency could save time for patients and clinics alike.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-path-to-clinical-acceptance">Path to clinical acceptance</h2>



<p>The research team hopes to conduct <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/in-vivo-studies" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">in vivo studies</a> next. They aim to confirm whether the robot can navigate real physiological conditions with the same level of agility.</p>



<p>“We aim to further optimize the design and control of the fiberscopic robot, prioritizing safety and reliability during interventional surgery,” said Dr. Zhang Tieshan, a postdoctoral fellow at HKUST. </p>



<p>Fine-tuning the technology will help doctors integrate it seamlessly into everyday practice.</p>

<p>In the long-term, experts predict that more integrated features could be added, such as advanced imaging modes, automated motion guidance and specialized accessories. </p>

<p>Researchers have uncovered a surprising behavior in boron-doped <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/diamonds-can-be-grown-in-a-lab-in-less-than-3-hours/">diamonds</a>, where electrons line up in collective waves that interact with light and electricity in ways that scientists did not think possible.</p>



<p>The discovery involves a special process in which boron atoms are introduced into the diamond structure, thus transforming an otherwise insulating crystal into a conductor while keeping much of its clarity intact.</p>



<p>This milestone could open fresh possibilities in the fields of quantum computing and advanced sensors. </p>



<p>The research was coordinated by <a href="https://physics.case.edu/faculty/giuseppe-strangi/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Giuseppe Strangi </a>from Case Western Reserve University, who oversaw the experiments that brought these unusual electronic waves into the spotlight.</p>

<p>“Understanding how doping alters the properties of semiconductors like diamond revolutionizes the way we design materials for advanced applications,” pointed out <a href="https://npre.illinois.edu/people/profile/rmohan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mohan Sankaran</a>, a nuclear and plasma engineering expert at the University of Illinois.</p>



<p>Researchers worked with sophisticated spectroscopy tools, which helped them identify the exact conditions that give rise to these plasmons. The interplay between electrical conductivity and optical clarity made the effort worthwhile.</p>

<p>Earth system models (ESMs) are essential tools for studying complex planetary processes, including interactions between the atmosphere and biosphere. These models help scientists and policymakers better understand climate change and its impacts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, improving the accuracy of Earth system models often requires gathering vast amounts of data - an effort that can take decades, if not centuries.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-expanding-plant-data-for-climate-models-nbsp">Expanding plant data for climate models&nbsp;</h2>



<p>A new study published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41597-024-04254-4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Nature Scientific Data</em></a> presents a breakthrough approach to this challenge. The researchers have developed a method to bypass the need for extensive field data collection across all known tree species.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Instead, they leveraged evolutionary relationships between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-plants-actively-shaped-earths-climate-cycle-throughout-history/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plants</a> to estimate key hydrologic traits, significantly expanding the data available for global climate modeling.</p>

<p>Plants play a fundamental role in Earth’s environmental systems, from capturing carbon and producing oxygen to influencing the movement of water across ecosystems.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to Knighton, an estimated 60% of all <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-changing-rainfall-patterns-impact-plants-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rainwater</a> is returned to the atmosphere through plant transpiration, a process that moves water from soil to air through plant tissues.</p>



<p>This water movement is currently represented in ESMs in a simplified manner, often grouping plants into broad categories called Plant Functional Types (PFTs).</p>



<p>“Plant Functional Types (PFTs) are used because we don’t know a lot about the details of individual plant species,” Knighton explained. “It would be harder to take a detailed map of vegetation over a continent and put in all the right values for each individual species, so it’s easier just to consider one generic PFT.”</p>



<p>While PFTs provide a manageable approach for modeling, they overlook key differences in plant hydrologic traits - such as root depth, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/water-cycles-through-plants-with-unexpected-speed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water</a> transport efficiency, and transpiration rates - that can significantly affect climate projections.</p>

<p>To improve the representation of plant traits in climate models, scientists have built databases like the <a href="https://www.try-db.org/TryWeb/Home.php" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TRY Plant Trait Database</a>, which compiles field measurements of plant characteristics. However, progress in cataloging traits has been slow.</p>



<p>“There are around 60,000 to 70,000 tree species on Earth, meaning that after 200 years, we know maybe 5 to 10% of what’s happening,” noted Knighton.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“If that were the way we would do things, it would take us another 2,000 years or so to learn about all the plants that we needed to, and at that point, climate change has set in, and it’s too late.”</p>



<p>Given the urgency of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-models-underestimate-sea-ice-melt-and-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate modeling</a>, waiting for field researchers to collect direct measurements is not a viable solution. Instead, Knighton and his colleagues devised a faster method to estimate missing plant traits using evolutionary relationships.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-using-evolution-to-predict-hydrologic-traits">Using evolution to predict hydrologic traits</h2>



<p>To address the knowledge gap, the researchers turned to phylogenetics, the study of evolutionary relationships between species. They examined available trait data - such as tree height, root depth, and water transport speed - across known species and then analyzed how closely related species share these traits.</p>



<p>“We looked to see how similar trait values are between closely related species, and the idea behind that is, if these traits are critical for their survival, evolution will have preserved the trait values, they won’t be randomly dispersed,” Knighton explained.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“For example, if growing deep roots was critical for a certain type of plant to survive, the species that branch off from that one will probably also have deep roots, and everything that’s in that family or that genus will have a similar <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/autophagy-what-makes-plant-roots-grow-faster-stronger/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">root structure</a>.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-missing-data-for-thousands-of-tree-species-nbsp">Missing data for thousands of tree species&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers found that hydrologic traits are highly conserved across evolutionary lineages, meaning that closely related species tend to have similar characteristics. This discovery enabled them to predict missing data for over 55,000 tree species by inferring trait values from their known relatives.</p>



<p>“We used different numerical machine learning techniques, and in doing that, we were able to come up with a database of these very critical tree values for 55,000 tree species on Earth,” Knighton said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This approach allows modelers to move beyond the oversimplified PFT system, providing a much more detailed representation of plant diversity in climate simulations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-confirming-the-estimated-plant-traits">Confirming the estimated plant traits</h2>



<p>While the research marks a major step forward, the scientists acknowledge that their method represents a first approximation. The next phase of their work involves validating the estimated traits against real-world observations.</p>



<p>“We consider this work to be a low-order approximation, but it is an important starting point,” Knighton explained. “As more data is collected from field researchers, the data can be used to update and refine the interpolated data to improve the accuracy of this approach.”</p>



<p>To test their estimates, the researchers are comparing their predictions against observational data from 10 well-documented forest sites across the United States. </p>



<p>Master’s student Caroline Stanton is currently constructing ecosystem models for each site and calibrating them with high-resolution plant trait data. </p>



<p>These models will then be compared to field data collected over the past two decades to assess how well the inferred traits match real-world measurements.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-new-tool-for-climate-simulation">A new tool for climate simulation</h2>



<p>If successful, the method could be applied to forested ecosystems worldwide. Beyond simply improving climate models, the dataset could help scientists understand what drives variation in plant traits and how these variations affect global environmental processes.</p>



<p>“If you want to do global modeling that includes more detail in the vegetation, which is important, you now have a starting point,” Knighton emphasized.</p>



<p>By dramatically expanding the dataset available for climate simulations, this research provides a new tool for modelers, ecologists, and policymakers working to predict and mitigate the impacts of climate change.&nbsp;</p>



<p>With further refinement, it could play a key role in shaping more accurate forecasts of Earth’s future climate and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/distress-signals-earths-water-cycle-is-becoming-more-erratic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water cycles</a>.</p>

<p>If an extraterrestrial civilization existed with technology comparable to ours, would they be able to detect Earth and recognize evidence of human activity? If so, what signals would be most visible, and from how far away?</p>



<p>These thought-provoking questions have been explored in a new study led by Dr. Sofia Sheikh of the SETI Institute.</p>



<p>Using a theoretical, model-based approach, this research is the first to analyze multiple types of technosignatures - the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/searching-for-technosignatures-from-intelligent-life-in-the-cosmos/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">indicators</a> of advanced technology - together, rather than examining them separately. </p>



<p>The results suggest that radio signals, particularly planetary radar emissions from the now-defunct Arecibo Observatory, would be the most detectable human-made signatures. These signals are potentially visible from as far as 12,000 light-years away.</p>



<p>Other signals, such as atmospheric pollutants, could also be detected, though at significantly shorter distances.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As observational technology continues to improve, scientists may be able to identify similar signatures on distant exoplanets, offering new ways to search for intelligent extraterrestrial life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-s-most-detectable-signals">Earth’s most detectable signals</h2>



<p>Among all of the potential signals emanating from Earth, radio transmissions appear to be the most prominent on a galactic scale.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Radio telescopes remain the primary tool for <a href="https://www.seti.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SETI</a> (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) research, as scientists scan the skies for unnatural radio waves that might originate from advanced civilizations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Given the strength of Earth's planetary radar emissions, researchers hypothesize that if extraterrestrials use similar technology to search for signals, Earth might stand out as a detectable world.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exploring-atmospheric-technosignatures"><strong>Exploring atmospheric technosignatures</strong></h2>



<p>Beyond radio waves, the study explored atmospheric technosignatures, including <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-will-increase-dramatically-in-a-hotter-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollutants</a> such as nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) - a byproduct of industrial activity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Recent advances in space-based instruments, such as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), and the upcoming Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO), could enable astronomers to detect such gases in exoplanet atmospheres.</p>



<p>According to the study’s findings, extraterrestrials equipped with similarly advanced telescopes could detect Earth's atmospheric pollutants from a maximum distance of 5.7 light-years, just beyond Proxima Centauri, the closest known exoplanetary system.</p>



<p>This suggests that industrial emissions could serve as an indirect way of identifying advanced civilizations. If scientists were to detect unusual levels of pollutants in an exoplanet’s atmosphere, it might hint at the presence of a technologically developed society.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-would-aliens-detect-on-earth"><strong>What would aliens detect on Earth?</strong></h2>



<p>As an observer approaches our planet, additional technosignatures become detectable. At closer distances, extraterrestrial astronomers would begin to detect multiple forms of human activity on Earth. </p>



<p>City lights from urban centers could be visible from space. High-powered laser emissions used for communication, military applications, and scientific research would also be detectable. </p>



<p>The thermal signature of cities, where artificial structures retain more heat than surrounding natural landscapes, would reveal urban heat islands. Additionally, the growing number of satellites and debris in Earth's orbit could be observed by advanced extraterrestrial telescopes.</p>



<p>Taken together, these overlapping signals would paint a compelling picture of an industrialized world, potentially making Earth one of the most recognizable planets to an alien observer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-using-earth-as-a-cosmic-mirror"><strong>Using Earth as a cosmic mirror</strong></h2>



<p>The experts emphasized that understanding Earth’s own technosignatures is critical for refining the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. By identifying which of our own signals are most detectable, researchers can better anticipate what kinds of signatures to look for on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exoplanet-discovery-nasa-identifies-over-5500-distant-worlds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exoplanets</a>.</p>



<p>Study co-author Macy Huston is a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley’s Department of Astronomy.</p>



<p>“Our goal with this project was to bring SETI back 'down to Earth' for a moment and think about where we really are today with Earth's technosignatures and detection capabilities,” explained Huston.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“In SETI, we should never assume other life and technology would be just like ours, but quantifying what 'ours' means can help put SETI searches into perspective.”</p>



<p>Sheikh echoed a similar sentiment, emphasizing that studying Earth's own impact on its environment can provide valuable insights into how extraterrestrial civilizations might be identified.</p>



<p>“One of the most satisfying aspects of this work was getting to use SETI as a cosmic mirror: what does Earth look like to the rest of the galaxy? And how would our current impacts on our planet be perceived?” said Sheikh.</p>



<p>“While of course we cannot know the answer, this work allowed us to extrapolate and imagine what we might assume if we ever discover a planet with, say, high concentrations of pollutants in its atmosphere.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-technosignature-research"><strong>The future of technosignature research</strong></h2>



<p>SETI research has long focused on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/are-aliens-sending-radio-signals-to-each-other/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">radio signals</a> as the primary method for detecting extraterrestrial intelligence, but this study demonstrates the importance of a multi-wavelength approach - examining different forms of technosignatures across the electromagnetic spectrum.</p>



<p>Current and future telescopes will improve detection sensitivity, allowing scientists to expand the search for life beyond Earth. Advanced observatories may eventually identify new atmospheric technosignatures, such as alternative industrial pollutants or artificial climate alterations.</p>



<p>Additionally, long-term studies tracking the evolution of Earth's technosignatures may provide fresh insights into how civilizations modify their environments over time.</p>



<p>As new space-based observatories come online and human activities continue to reshape Earth’s atmospheric composition, periodic reassessments of the planet's detectability could refine our approach to discovering extraterrestrial life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-of-the-nbsp-study">Implications of the&nbsp;study</h2>



<p>Ultimately, this study highlights both the strengths and limitations of current SETI efforts. While Earth is highly detectable via radio waves, other technosignatures - such as pollution - would require relatively close proximity for extraterrestrials to observe.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As astronomers continue their search, understanding these limitations will help shape strategies for identifying distant technological civilizations.</p>



<p>Whether or not intelligent extraterrestrial beings are currently observing Earth, this research emphasizes the importance of looking outward to understand our place in the cosmos.</p>

<p>In the last few years, scientists have tracked a noticeable uptick in Earth’s average temperature. As experts investigate why warming is accelerating, a new study suggests that changes in ship aerosols may be a contributing factor.</p>



<p>To explore the connections between human activity and the climate system, researchers use data on greenhouse gases, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfires-and-arctic-ice-clouds-an-unexpected-connection/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">airborne particles</a>, and shifting ocean patterns.</p>



<p>The latest <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00139157.2025.2434494#abstract" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> offers a surprising analysis of recent temperature spikes and the role of aerosols in ship pollution.</p>



<p>The research was conducted by Dr. James Hansen, the director of the Climate Science, Awareness, and Solutions Program at Columbia University, along with his co-authors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-temperature-surge">Understanding the temperature surge</h2>



<p>The study notes a sudden jump of more than 0.7°F over the last two years. That is about twice what experts expected from a moderate El Niño pattern alone. In January of this year, NASA confirmed this spike, denoting <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/news-release/temperatures-rising-nasa-confirms-2024-warmest-year-on-record/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2024</a> as the “warmest year on record.”</p>



<p>The authors suggest this amplified warming is linked to changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-small-aerosols-influence-cloud-formation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aerosol pollution</a>. They specifically spotlight new regulations on ship fuel that reduce sulfur emissions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ship-aerosols-once-cooled-the-planet">Ship aerosols once cooled the planet</h2>



<p>Aerosols are tiny specks in the air that can reflect incoming sunlight. In many oceanic regions, these particles had offset some of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aerosols-have-an-underestimated-effect-on-clouds-and-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">warming effect</a> of greenhouse gases.</p>



<p>Because ships were a major source of sulfur-based aerosols, cutting this pollution reduced the reflective haze. According to the paper, less haze means more solar energy staying in the atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hotter-earth-as-ship-aerosols-vanish">Hotter Earth as ship aerosols vanish</h2>



<p>Incoming solar energy and outgoing heat must stay in sync to keep surface temperatures stable. The <a href="https://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> points out that the planet has been soaking up more energy than it loses since at least the early 2000s.</p>



<p>The researchers found that ocean waters store most of this excess heat, fueling storms and increasing the threat of rapid intensification in tropical systems.</p>



<p> The warming also amplifies extreme weather, such as sudden droughts or record-breaking rainfall.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-possible-policy-implications">Possible policy implications</h2>



<p>The research implies that the world may have underestimated how sensitive the climate is to rising carbon dioxide levels. If the impact of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aerosol-formation-earths-lower-atmosphere-soas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aerosols</a> was larger than we thought, then trimming fossil fuel use is even more pressing.</p>



<p>Fresh restrictions on pollution from ships do improve air quality for people. However, the study authors note that removing these cooling aerosols adds an extra kick to global warming unless greenhouse emissions decline.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-concerns-about-melting-ice">Concerns about melting ice</h2>



<p>High latitudes face special risks. Warmer ocean currents can erode the edges of ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica, raising sea level by several feet over time.</p>

<p>Leaders in various regions are prioritizing reduced pollution to safeguard human health. Cutting sulfur aerosols from ships is just one example of curbing harmful air contaminants.</p>



<p>Yet these choices can have unintended global consequences if greenhouse gases remain unchecked. Scientists hope that local gains do not overshadow the wider need to slash <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-tiny-aerosols-in-sea-spray-influence-earths-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon emissions</a>.</p>



<p>The authors recommend more precise tracking of ocean heat storage and ice sheet behavior. Satellites and deep-diving floats can clarify how quickly seas are warming and how fast land ice is weakening.</p>



<p>Improved understanding of aerosol-cloud dynamics is also essential. More continuous observations of these particles at different latitudes would resolve uncertainties about their climate impact.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-adjusting-for-the-loss-of-ship-aerosols">Adjusting for the loss of ship aerosols</h2>



<p>Experts have stressed that major climate organizations, including the <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change</a>, must keep refining their models. The recent findings highlight that overlooked sources of cooling, such as ship aerosols, can mask the real warming trend.</p>



<p>Considering that we might cross critical temperature milestones sooner than anticipated, there is an urgent need to integrate these fresh insights into policymaking and climate resilience measures.</p>



<p>The next few decades will show whether nations can adapt and lower emissions swiftly enough. The discussion around shipping routes, aerosol policies, and carbon pricing is now in sharp focus.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet <em>Archaeopteris</em>: the first modern tree</h2>



<p>The star of this ancient forest is <em>Archaeopteris</em> – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur <em>Archaeopteryx</em>. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.</p>



<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-today-s-climate">Lessons for today's climate</h2>



<p>Why does a 385-million-year-old forest matter today? It shows how dramatically forests can change Earth's climate. These ancient woodlands created the atmospheric conditions supporting complex life.</p>

Instead, researchers from Stanford Medicine have found that our bodies undergo dramatic molecular changes at two specific ages: 44 and 60. <p>Michael Snyder, chair of genetics at Stanford School of Medicine and the study's senior author, noted significant findings. "We're not just changing gradually over time; there are some really dramatic changes. It turns out the mid-40s is a time of dramatic change, as is the early 60s. And that's true no matter what class of molecules you look at."</p>



<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cellular-changes-and-microbiome-shifts">Cellular changes and microbiome shifts</h2>



<p>The Stanford research revealed that these aging bursts affect our microbiome – the trillions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi living in and on our bodies. These microbial communities undergo substantial shifts during both aging periods, potentially affecting everything from digestion to immune function.</p>



<p>Additionally, researchers found that protein production and gene expression begin to fall out of sync as we age. This breakdown in cellular communication becomes especially pronounced during the two aging waves, contributing to the accumulation of damaged proteins associated with diseases such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alzheimers-may-not-be-brain-disorder-important-data-was-fabricated/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alzheimer's</a>.</p>

<p>Understanding these aging patterns has important implications for healthcare strategies. Research suggests that people should pay particular attention to their health during their 40s and 60s, when these dramatic molecular changes occur.</p>



<p>Snyder emphasized the importance of proactive health measures. "I'm a big believer that we should try to adjust our lifestyles while we're still healthy," he noted. This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-directions-in-aging-research">Future directions in aging research</h2>



<p>Emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, cellular reprogramming, and senolytic therapies, are opening new possibilities for extending healthspan. Companies develop treatments targeting aging's fundamental mechanisms rather than just managing age-related diseases.</p>



<p>The Stanford findings provide a roadmap for implementing preventive measures. Rather than waiting for symptoms, people can prepare for and potentially mitigate these predictable aging waves.</p>



<p>As aging understanding evolves, one thing becomes clear: aging isn't inevitable decline, but specific biological events we may learn to prevent or reverse. The key is recognizing when these transitions occur and taking proactive health steps during vulnerable periods.</p>

Recent scientific discoveries are revolutionizing our understanding of this peculiar human behavior.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-discovery-in-the-brain">Breakthrough discovery in the brain</h2>



<p>In 2023, Dr. Michael Brecht's team at <a href="https://www.hu-berlin.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Humboldt University</a>-<a href="https://www.hu-berlin.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Berlin</a> made a major discovery published in the <a href="https://www.cell.com/iscience/fulltext/S2589-0042(22)01991-5" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">journal <em>Neuron</em></a>. They identified the brain's actual "tickling command center" – specific neurons in a region called the periaqueductal gray that control both tickling responses and play behavior.</p>



<p>When researchers used cutting-edge optogenetic technology to shut down these neurons in laboratory rats, something remarkable happened. The animals completely lost their ability to be tickled or engage in playful behavior.</p>



<p>"We found that global blockade of the rat periaqueductal gray with either muscimol or lidocaine interfered with ticklishness and play," the research team reported in their study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-two-types-of-tickling-revealed">Two types of tickling revealed</h2>



<p>What we call "tickling" is two completely different phenomena, according to the latest research. Light tickling – that feathery sensation that makes you want to scratch – is essentially your body's sophisticated bug detection system. This alerts you to potential insects or parasites on your skin.</p>



<p>Deep tickling – the kind that makes you laugh uncontrollably – involves complex brain circuits and is fundamentally social. You literally cannot tickle yourself with this type of stimulation.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
