<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>

<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>

<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>

<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>

<p>Anyone who thinks booking a commercial flight is the only way to rack up carbon emissions should take a closer look at the monthly output of popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT. </p>



<p>Recent data indicate that the emissions associated with these tools could raise eyebrows among those who care about shrinking our collective environmental footprint.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-high-carbon-footprint-of-chatgpt">High carbon footprint of ChatGPT</h2>



<p>According to a study by <a href="https://www.knownhost.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">KnownHost</a>, the use of <a href="https://openai.com/index/chatgpt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ChatGPT</a> produces more than 260,930 kilograms (573,000 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) each month. That figure is <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-shocking-reality-of-website-emissions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">linked to high traffic</a> from its more than 164 million monthly users.</p>



<p>Although it emits only 1.59 grams of CO<sub>2</sub> per page view, that efficiency is offset by soaring popularity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study also points out that ChatGPT’s carbon impact is equivalent to 260 flights from New York City to London in the same timeframe, offering a stark reminder that digital services leave a mark on the environment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chatgpt-isn-t-the-only-carbon-abuser">ChatGPT isn't the only carbon abuser</h2>



<p>Other AI platforms show less total monthly <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-carbon-sinks-are-being-pushed-to-their-limits/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CO<sub>2</sub></a>, but they emit more per individual pageview. Rytr’s output stands at 10.1 grams (0,35 ounces) CO<sub>2</sub> per pageview, while Spellbook comes in at 6.5 grams (0.23 ounces) per pageview.</p>



<p>Even though their overall usage is smaller, the carbon cost per interaction is higher than ChatGPT’s. Some might see ChatGPT’s lower rate per pageview as a bright spot, but its heavy traffic means emissions still climb significantly.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-data-centers-consume-massive-energy">Data centers consume massive energy</h2>



<p>Data centers host these AI tools and, according to the 2024 United States Data Center Energy Usage <a href="https://eta-publications.lbl.gov/sites/default/files/2024-12/lbnl-2024-united-states-data-center-energy-usage-report.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Report</a> from Berkeley Lab, they consumed more than double the energy in 2023 than they did in 2017.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Electricity consumption of US data centers is currently growing at an accelerating rate,” stated the authors of the report. These massive facilities keep servers cool and operational around the clock, leading to constant energy draw.</p>



<p>The International Energy Agency’s Electricity 2024 <a href="https://www.iea.org/reports/electricity-2024" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a> notes that newer technologies - like advanced AI and cryptocurrency - could double energy use by next year. One-third of that rise is expected to be traced back to data centers.</p>



<p>This trend reveals how widespread digital services can become major contributors to global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-warming-is-accelerating-beyond-control-as-co2-levels-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">energy consumption</a>.</p>



<p>“As innovation continues into 2025, balancing environmental sustainability will need to become a core focus for tech companies and the users of their tools alike,” said Daniel Pearson, CEO of KnownHost. The statement suggests a need for shared responsibility.</p>



<p>Developers can shift toward greener solutions, and users may opt for options that cut power use.</p>

<p>"Reforestation is an obvious ‘win-win’ for biodiversity," said Dr. Beaury, an ecologist and biogeographer specializing in invasive plants. "Restoring lost forests provides habitat while also reducing the impacts of climate change."</p>

<p>Across cosmic history, powerful forces have shaped matter into the intricate structures that define the universe. From the earliest moments after the Big Bang to the present-day cosmic web, the distribution of galaxies, clusters, and filaments has evolved in ways largely consistent with Einstein’s theory of gravity. </p>



<p>However, new research suggests that the universe's large-scale structure has developed in an unexpected way - becoming "messier and more complicated" over time.</p>



<p>Led by Joshua Kim and Mathew Madhavacheril from the University of Pennsylvania, along with collaborators from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the study reveals that the distribution of matter in the cosmos is less clumpy than expected.</p>



<p>The findings add a new layer of complexity to our understanding of how the universe has grown over the past 13.8 billion years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-cosmic-history">Studying cosmic history</h2>



<p>To probe the structure of the universe across time, the research team combined two powerful datasets: the final data release from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (<a href="https://act.princeton.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACT</a>) and the first-year results from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (<a href="https://www.desi.lbl.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DESI</a>). </p>



<p>By merging these complementary sources, they created a unique, multidimensional view of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mapping-the-universe-may-reveal-secrets-of-dark-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmic evolution</a>.</p>



<p>“Our work cross-correlated two types of datasets from complementary, but very distinct, surveys. What we found was that, for the most part, the story of structure formation is remarkably consistent with the predictions from Einstein's gravity,” explained Madhavacheril.</p>



<p>“We did see a hint for a small discrepancy in the amount of expected clumpiness in recent epochs, around four billion years ago, which could be interesting to pursue.”</p>



<p>By integrating these two sources of data, the team effectively layered snapshots of the universe taken at different epochs, much like stacking transparencies of ancient cosmic photographs over more recent ones. </p>



<p>This method allowed them to observe changes in the distribution of matter over billions of years, revealing surprising new details about the way <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-dark-matter-does-not-exist-and-the-universe-is-27-billion-years-old/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmic structures</a> have formed and evolved.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-picture-of-the-universe-in-its-infancy">A picture of the universe in its infancy </h2>



<p>One of the key components of this research relies on ACT’s data, which provides a glimpse into the early universe through a faint remnant of the Big Bang known as the Cosmic Microwave Background (<a href="https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Cosmic_Microwave_Background_CMB_radiation#:~:text=The%20Cosmic%20Microwave%20Background%20(CMB,shockwave'%20of%20the%20Big%20Bang." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CMB</a>). </p>



<p>This radiation, which has been traveling through <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dead-stars-reveal-the-hidden-physics-of-the-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">space</a> for nearly 14 billion years, offers an unparalleled view of the universe when it was just 380,000 years old.</p>



<p>“ACT, covering approximately 23% of the sky, paints a picture of the universe's infancy by using a distant, faint light that's been traveling since the Big Bang,” said Kim.</p>



<p>“Formally, this light is called the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), but we sometimes just call it the universe's baby picture because it's a snapshot of when it was around 380,000 years old.”</p>



<p>The journey of this ancient light has not been a straight one. As it traveled through space, the CMB was distorted by the gravitational pull of massive cosmic structures such as galaxy clusters. </p>



<p>This phenomenon, known as gravitational lensing, alters the path of the CMB photons in much the same way that a pair of spectacles distorts the view of an image. </p>



<p>By analyzing these distortions, cosmologists can infer valuable information about the large-scale structure of the universe, including how matter is distributed across cosmic time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracing-the-universe-s-structure-with-galaxies">Tracing the universe's structure with galaxies</h2>



<p>While ACT provides insight into the early universe, DESI offers a more recent perspective by mapping the three-dimensional distribution of galaxies across vast stretches of space. </p>



<p>Located at the <a href="https://kpno.noirlab.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kitt Peak National Observatory</a> in Arizona and operated by <a href="https://www.lbl.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory</a>, DESI is specifically designed to study the arrangement of luminous red galaxies (LRGs), which serve as cosmic landmarks.</p>



<p>“The LRGs from DESI are like a more recent picture of the universe, showing us how galaxies are distributed at varying distances. It’s a powerful way to see how structures have evolved from the CMB map to where galaxies stand today,” explained Kim.</p>



<p>By mapping the positions of millions of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unknown-factors-are-accelerating-the-expansion-of-the-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies</a>, DESI provides a precise record of how matter has spread out over the past several billion years.</p>



<p>When combined with the lensing data from ACT, this creates an unprecedented overlap between early and late-universe observations, allowing researchers to directly compare how structures have changed over time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cosmic-ct-scan-of-the-universe">Cosmic CT scan of the universe</h2>



<p>One of the most exciting aspects of this research is its ability to function like a&nbsp;cosmic CT scan, providing a layered view of the universe’s structure at different points in time. </p>



<p>By examining the way matter has clumped together across cosmic history, the team was able to track the influence of gravity over billions of years.</p>



<p>“This process is like a cosmic CT scan, where we can look through different slices of cosmic history and track how matter clumped together at different epochs. It gives us a direct look into how the gravitational influence of matter changed over billions of years,” said Madhavacheril.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clumpiness-of-the-universe-s-structure">Clumpiness of the universe's structure</h2>



<p>Despite overall agreement with established models, the researchers identified a small but notable discrepancy. The expected level of clumpiness, a measure of how matter is distributed in the universe, appears to be slightly lower than predicted in the later epochs of cosmic history.</p>



<p>This discrepancy is captured by a key metric known as&nbsp;Sigma 8 (σ8), which quantifies the amplitude of matter density fluctuations. A lower-than-expected value of σ8 suggests that cosmic structures may not have formed in complete accordance with early-universe predictions.</p>



<p>“This slight disagreement with expectations isn’t strong enough to suggest new physics conclusively - it’s still possible that this deviation is purely by chance,” said Kim.</p>



<p>However, if this deviation turns out to be real and not a statistical anomaly, it could point to unknown physical processes influencing the way <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-energy-could-explain-the-rapid-expansion-of-the-early-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmic structures</a> form and evolve. </p>



<p>One leading hypothesis is that&nbsp;dark energy, the mysterious force responsible for the accelerating expansion of the universe, may be affecting structure formation in ways that current models do not fully capture.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-toward-the-future">Looking toward the future</h2>



<p>While this research from the <a href="https://www.upenn.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Pennsylvania</a> raises new questions about cosmic evolution, upcoming projects promise to refine these measurements with even greater precision. </p>



<p>The&nbsp;<a href="https://simonsobservatory.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Simons Observatory</a>, a next-generation telescope currently under development, will provide more detailed observations of the CMB and its lensing effects, helping scientists determine whether the observed discrepancy is real or simply a fluctuation within expected parameters.</p>



<p>By combining increasingly powerful observational tools with sophisticated theoretical models, researchers hope to gain a deeper understanding of how the universe’s large-scale structure has developed over billions of years. </p>



<p>Whether this study ultimately confirms existing models or points toward new physics, it represents an important step toward unraveling the mysteries of the cosmos.</p>



<p>As scientists continue to push the boundaries of our understanding, one thing remains clear - the story of the universe’s evolution is far from over. Each new discovery brings us closer to answering some of the biggest questions in cosmology, revealing the intricate and ever-changing nature of the cosmos.</p>

<p>Nature has long been a treasure trove of medicinal compounds, with plants and animals providing the foundation for many important drugs. </p>



<p>Morphine, aspirin, and paclitaxel all originate from natural sources, offering immense therapeutic benefits. However, despite their rich chemical diversity and centuries of use in medicine, mushrooms remain largely underexplored in medical research.</p>



<p>Their potential for drug discovery has yet to be fully realized. A recent breakthrough by researchers from Shinshu University, Japan, is changing this landscape. </p>



<p>The team has successfully achieved the first total synthesis of inaoside A, a natural compound found in the edible mushroom&nbsp;<em>Laetiporus cremeiporus</em>. </p>



<p>This advancement, published in the&nbsp;<em>Asian Journal of Organic Chemistry</em>, is a significant step toward understanding the bioactive properties of inaoside A and other mushroom-derived compounds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-compound-in-organic-chemistry">New compound in organic chemistry</h2>



<p>The research from <a href="https://www.shinshu-u.ac.jp/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Shinshu University</a> was led by Professor Atsushi Kawamura from the Department of Biomolecular Innovation, along with Mr. Tomoya Takao from the Department of Agriculture and Dr. Hidefumi Makabe from the Department of Biomolecular Innovation.</p>



<p>Their work focuses on the synthesis of inaoside A, a compound classified as an α-D-ribofuranoside. While the α-D-ribofuranoside structure is commonly found in nature, it remains far less studied than its β-anomer counterparts.</p>



<p>"Although the α-D-ribofuranoside structure is frequently found in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secrets-of-brittle-star-tissue-could-transform-regenerative-medicine/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">natural products</a>, there have been fewer reports of the synthesis of α-D-ribofuranosides than of the β-anomers. Thus, the synthesis of α-D-ribofuranosides has attracted much attention from organic chemists," explained Dr. Kawamura.</p>



<p>This structural class is of particular interest because of its potential biological activities. Scientists suspect that inaoside A may have important medicinal properties, but without an efficient synthesis method, further exploration was difficult.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"The total synthesis of inaoside A is an important objective because its varied bioactivities need to be investigated," said Dr. Kawamura.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-synthesizing-mushroom-compounds-for-medicines">Synthesizing mushroom compounds for medicines</h2>



<p>Developing a synthetic route for inaoside A posed several challenges. To create the compound, the research team needed to use a key reaction known as α-selective Schmidt glycosylation. </p>



<p>This reaction attaches a glycoside to another molecule in a highly specific manner, ensuring that the final product maintains the correct structural orientation.</p>



<p>Using retrosynthetic chemistry, the team worked backward from the desired final product to determine the ideal starting materials. They identified two essential precursors: an aglycone derived from vanillin and a ribofuranosyl trichloroacetimidate. </p>



<p>However, an obstacle remained - Schmidt glycosylation typically favors the formation of β-ribofuranosides rather than the desired α-ribofuranosides.</p>



<p>To overcome this issue, the researchers modified their approach by selecting a different substrate. They employed a 2,3,5-tri-O-(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)-protected ribofuranoside, which facilitated α-selective glycosylation with remarkable precision. </p>



<p>This strategic modification allowed them to achieve an α/β ratio of 4:1 to 5:1, ensuring the successful synthesis of inaoside A with high selectivity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-inaoside">Significance of inaoside</h2>



<p>The ability to synthesize inaoside A in the laboratory is a major milestone in natural product research. By creating a reliable synthetic method, scientists can now study this compound in greater detail, examining its potential medicinal applications and biological <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fungi-can-think-and-make-smart-decisions-without-a-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">functions</a>.</p>



<p>"By elucidating the chemical structures and biological activities of natural products derived from mushrooms, we aim to discover the potential of edible <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mushroom-is-given-a-robot-body-and-runs-wild-in-fascinating-video/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mushrooms</a> as functional foods. These natural products could contribute to advancing pharmaceutical science by serving as pharmaceutical leads," noted Dr. Kawamura.</p>



<p>With a stable supply of inaoside A now possible, researchers can conduct further studies on its bioactivity. Understanding its interactions within biological systems could lead to the development of new pharmaceuticals or functional food ingredients. </p>



<p>The study of mushroom-derived compounds is still in its early stages, but this success demonstrates that fungi hold significant promise for future drug discovery.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-mushroom-derived-medicines">Future of mushroom-derived medicines</h2>



<p>Now that inaoside A can be synthesized efficiently, the research team is eager to explore its full potential. Further investigations are already underway, including <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mushroom-leather-mycelium-latest-eco-friendly-fashion-trend/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">structural modifications</a> and biological testing to determine its therapeutic properties.</p>



<p>"Further studies on inaoside A, including more detailed investigation of its bioactivities, the synthesis of derivatives, and structure-activity relationship studies, are in progress. We would like to develop this chemical into a socially meaningful compound," said Dr. Kawamura.</p>



<p>This research marks an important step toward unlocking the vast chemical diversity of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mushroom-magic-new-species-discovered-in-africa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mushrooms</a>. As scientists continue to explore these natural compounds, they may uncover new leads for drug development, functional foods, and other biotechnological applications. </p>



<p>The successful synthesis of inaoside A serves as a reminder that nature still holds many secrets waiting to be discovered.</p>

<p>Dinosaurs left behind fossilized bones and footprints that offer vivid glimpses into their everyday survival. Paleontologists can infer their diets, estimate their sizes, and even figure out how quickly they grew. </p>



<p>But there is one perplexing detail that has baffled experts for well over a century: how did these massive creatures have sex, and what were their mating rituals?</p>



<p>Theories about dinosaur courtship and copulation spark curiosity among researchers and casual observers alike. </p>



<p>Some imagine towering, long-necked giants struggling to coordinate their bulk, while others focus on smaller species trying to avoid spiky tails or protective armor.</p>



<p>One person at the forefront of this conversation is <a href="https://community.geosociety.org/gbgm/dfg/rileyblack" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ms. Riley Black</a>, an American paleontologist who has examined the hidden world of dinosaur intimacy in her published commentaries for the <em><a href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Smithsonian Magazine</a>.</em></p>



<p>“For more than a century, paleontologists have wondered about how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rare-triassic-fossil-gondwanax-paraisensis-may-rewrite-history-of-dinosaurs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dinosaurs</a> mated,” said Ms. Black in one of her discussions on the subject.</p>



<p>"Comparisons to living birds and crocodylians hint that individual dinosaurs usually had a phallus or a clitoris, although hard evidence of such structures has not yet been uncovered."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dinosaur-courtship-rituals">Dinosaur courtship rituals</h2>



<p>Fossils tell us only part of the story. Bones and teeth can reveal feeding behaviors, while footprints occasionally capture intriguing hints about group activity.</p>



<p>Yet, when it comes to mating, the direct evidence is frustratingly limited because reproductive organs rarely - if ever - turn into fossils. Despite this challenge, scientists have found ways to glean indirect insights.</p>



<p>In 2016, a team of paleontologists led by <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2023/12/11/dinosaur-tracks-martin-lockley-paleontologist-ucd-ridge/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Martin Lockley</a> from the <a href="https://www.ucdenver.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Colorado Denver</a> identified unusual scrape marks believed to be “<a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26741567/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mating grounds</a>” where large, carnivorous dinosaurs may have performed courtship displays.</p>



<p>These scrape marks give researchers a window into pre-mating behavior, hinting that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-tracks-discovered-on-uks-dinosaur-highway/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dinosaurs</a> had specific routines to woo potential partners.</p>



<p>Think of this as a type of "prehistoric foreplay" as the <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Daily Mail</a> so eloquently surmised when discussing these mating grounds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clues-about-dinosaur-mating">Clues about dinosaur mating</h2>



<p>Birds are living descendants of certain dinosaur lineages, and their closest evolutionary cousins are crocodilians. By examining these groups, scientists can make educated guesses about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dinosaurs-evolved-feathers-for-much-more-than-just-flying/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dinosaur</a> anatomy.</p>



<p>While many modern bird groups do not possess a visible penis, ducks and ostriches (some of the more ancient forms) still do. </p>



<p>Male crocodilians have a single penis concealed in a cloaca, which is the all-purpose opening for excretion and reproduction.</p>



<p>Given these observations, most specialists propose that dinosaurs likely had similar structures tucked away, ready for brief yet essential moments of contact. </p>



<p>This notion supports earlier work by researchers who saw parallels with living alligators and large birds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-all-dinosaurs-mated-the-same-way">All dinosaurs mated the same way</h2>



<p>Although no confirmed fossil of dinosaurs locked in an intimate embrace has ever turned up, parallels with modern reptiles suggest that their mating was typically a direct act that involved the male positioning himself behind the female.</p>



<p>“All dinosaurs used the same basic position to mate. Mounting from the rear, he put his forelimbs on her shoulders, lifting one hind limb across her back and twisting his tail under hers” said <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Alain-Blieck/publication/298622786_L_B_Halstead_and_the_heterostracan_controversy/links/5889e749a6fdcc9a35c3badd/L-B-Halstead-and-the-heterostracan-controversy.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Beverly Halstead</a>, a noted English paleontologist who took an interest in dinosaur reproduction decades ago.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-precarious-and-dangerous-positioning">Precarious and dangerous positioning</h2>



<p>This statement may sound simple, but it prompts visions of a precarious balancing act for massive <a href="https://ucmp.berkeley.edu/diapsids/saurischia/sauropoda.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sauropods</a>. For creatures that outweighed elephants many times over, the mechanics seem daunting.</p>



<p>Researchers note that supporting a partner’s weight during mating would not necessarily exceed the stress a dinosaur’s hind limbs experienced during ordinary walking or running. </p>



<p>Some breakthroughs come from discoveries that are not related to mating positions at all.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-parenting-evidence">Early parenting evidence</h2>



<p>Scientists examining <a href="https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/dino-directory/tyrannosaurus.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Tyrannosaurus rex</em></a> bones have found <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/srep06253" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">medullary tissue</a> in the thighbone of a pregnant female. This special type of bone tissue is found to <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.1112158" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">form</a> in modern birds when they are about to lay eggs. </p>



<p>This discovery confirmed that dinosaurs shared more reproductive links with birds than previously appreciated.</p>



<p>It also hinted at the age when these creatures reached sexual maturity, often earlier than one might assume. There are always loose ends in any discussion of dinosaur biology.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-some-dinosaurs-needed-water-to-mate">Some dinosaurs needed water to mate</h2>



<p>Questions remain about how spiny, heavily plated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-the-worlds-best-preserved-psittacosaurus-dinosaurs-die/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">creatures</a> like stegosaurs managed intimate moments without injury. </p>



<p>It is also unclear whether some massive species needed water for extra buoyancy to protect the female from a partner’s weight.</p>



<p>New technology and fresh fossil sites offer hope for clearer answers. Computer modeling allows paleontologists to simulate possible mating postures based on the range of motion in fossilized joints.</p>



<p>Synchrotron scanning and CT imaging allows them peer deeper into ancient bones for evidence of medullary layers and other reproductive signals. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dinosaur-mating-and-future-discoveries">Dinosaur mating and future discoveries</h2>



<p>Although a frozen-in-time snapshot of dinosaur mating has yet to be uncovered, many in the field anticipate that more insights into the private lives of dinosaurs are just around the corner.</p>



<p>Even a single skeleton with distinct indicators of reproductive behavior could reshape our entire understanding of how these creatures ensured their survival in a hostile, ever-changing world.</p>

<p>Money troubles don't just empty wallets - they can shape young minds in ways that echo through generations. New research reveals that children born into financially struggling families tend to show more challenging behaviors throughout their poor childhood years, regardless of where they live.</p>



<p>The findings paint a stark picture of how economic circumstances at birth can cast long shadows over a child's development.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-children-living-in-poverty">Children living in poverty </h2>



<p>Children who <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/poverty-impacts-brain-development-in-children/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">struggle</a> with self-regulation often face difficulties forming friendships, experience poor academic performance, and display reduced cognitive abilities.</p>



<p>Over time, these challenges can contribute to a cycle of disadvantage, leading to high school dropouts, unemployment, and poor financial management.</p>



<p>The study emphasizes that economic status at birth plays a significant role in shaping a child's behavioral development, regardless of the neighborhood in which they grow up.</p>



<p>However, for children from wealthier families, the environment matters more. At age three, children from affluent families who lived in poor neighborhoods displayed similar behavioral challenges as their low-income peers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-economic-status-at-birth">Economic status at birth</h2>



<p>The link between childhood poverty and behavioral problems is well established. But this study goes further, showing that these effects persist throughout childhood and adolescence.</p>



<p>“We know that family socioeconomic status affects children’s development a lot,” said Soobin Kim, the study’s lead author and a postdoctoral researcher at UGA’s <a href="https://ssw.uga.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of Social Work</a>.</p>



<p>“The major takeaway of this paper is that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-takes-a-major-toll-on-childrens-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">children</a> born into poor families have consistently higher rates of behavior problems throughout their first 15 years of life than children who were born into not poor families. But we also highlight how living in a poor neighborhood can influence kids from wealthier families too.”</p>



<p>For children born into low-income households, behavior problems remain a constant challenge, regardless of where they grow up. But for children from wealthier families, their neighborhood has a significant impact.</p>



<p>When children from high-income families live in poor neighborhoods, they exhibit increased behavioral issues at a young age. However, as they grow older and interact with broader social groups, the influence of their environment diminishes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-poverty-on-children-s-development">Impact of poverty on children's development</h2>



<p>Growing up in poverty does not just affect a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-heat-is-now-the-reality-for-nearly-half-a-billion-children/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">child’s behavior</a> in the short term. It has long-lasting effects on their educational attainment, mental health, and access to essential resources.</p>



<p>Children from low-income families are less likely to complete school, more likely to experience crime, and often struggle with mental health conditions due to increased stress at home. These disadvantages create additional barriers, making it even harder for them to break free from poverty as adults.</p>



<p>One of the major challenges for children in low-income families is access to quality healthcare and education. Without proper medical care, childhood illnesses can go untreated, which can also affect development.</p>



<p>Limited access to early childhood education means that many children from poor backgrounds start school already behind their peers, and they struggle with literacy, numeracy, and social skills. These initial gaps can widen over time, making it difficult for disadvantaged children to catch up.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-poor-families-and-child-development">Poor families and child development</h2>



<p>The effects of poverty do not stop at external resources. They also influence family dynamics and parenting styles. Parents facing financial insecurity often experience high levels of stress, which can affect how they interact with their children. </p>



<p>When parents worry about paying bills, putting food on the table, or keeping a stable job, they may struggle to provide emotional support and engage in positive parenting.</p>



<p>Parents in financial distress are more likely to adopt stricter, more controlling parenting methods in an attempt to maintain order. While discipline is necessary, overly strict or authoritarian parenting can sometimes backfire. Instead of promoting good behavior, it may lead to increased rebellion and misbehavior in children.</p>



<p>In addition, parents with financial concerns may have less time and energy to participate in their children's education. </p>



<p>They may work long hours or multiple jobs, leaving little time for school involvement, homework help, or extracurricular activities. This lack of parental engagement can negatively impact children's academic progress and social development.</p>



<p>“When children are very young, children and their families are highly affected by the lack of safety and resources in poor neighborhoods,” said Kim.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-creating-equal-opportunities">Creating equal opportunities</h2>



<p>Addressing disparities in both family income and neighborhood conditions is crucial for ensuring all children have an equal opportunity to succeed. The researchers emphasize that tackling resource shortages at an early age is the key to preventing long-term developmental disadvantages.</p>



<p>Expanding programs like Head Start, a U.S. Department of <a href="https://www.hhs.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Health and Human Services</a> initiative that supports early childhood education, could help reduce behavioral differences between children from contrasting economic backgrounds.</p>



<p>By providing access to quality daycare, preschool, and early learning opportunities, these programs equip children with the foundational skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-older-children-from-poor-background">Older children from poor background</h2>



<p>For older <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-is-harming-kids-memory-and-learning/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">children</a>, school social workers play a crucial role in promoting strong peer relationships and creating a sense of belonging. Social workers can provide emotional support, mediate conflicts, and help students navigate the challenges that come with growing up in poverty. </p>



<p>Schools that invest in mental health support services and after-school programs can also help at-risk children to build positive relationships and develop healthy coping mechanisms.</p>



<p>Anti-poverty initiatives aimed at supporting families need to start early. By addressing developmental and environmental gaps from infancy, society can help children from low-income backgrounds overcome obstacles and achieve better long-term outcomes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breaking-the-cycle-for-future-generations">Breaking the cycle for future generations</h2>



<p>The findings highlight an urgent need to address childhood poverty and its far-reaching consequences.</p>



<p>While children from wealthier families may experience temporary behavioral challenges if they live in disadvantaged neighborhoods, children born into poverty face consistent obstacles throughout their first 15 years of life.</p>



<p>By investing in early intervention programs, supporting struggling families, and creating safer, resource-rich communities, society can help level the playing field. Every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential, regardless of the circumstances into which they are born.</p>



<p>Addressing the root causes of childhood poverty is not just about improving individual lives - it is about creating a stronger, more equitable society for future generations.</p>

<p>A couple of months from now, the world will witness the launch of a satellite that promises to change the way we understand our planet. This isn't just any satellite - it's NISAR, a marvel of scientific innovation that will map our planet in breathtaking detail, all thanks to a special technique.</p>



<p>Designed to provide unparalleled insights into Earth's dynamic processes, NISAR will monitor changes - from the shifting of tectonic plates to the melting of polar ice caps - with remarkable precision.</p>



<p>Its exceptional capabilities will empower scientists and policymakers to better address pressing global challenges such as climate change, natural disasters, and resource management.</p>



<p>As anticipation builds, the mission stands as a remarkable example of international collaboration, with NASA and ISRO (the Indian Space Research Organization) joining forces to bring this revolutionary technology to life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-promise-of-nisar-s-technology">The promise of NISAR's technology</h2>



<p>Taking its name and function from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sentinel-2c-satellite-delivers-first-breathtaking-images-of-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">satellite</a> will produce a detailed view of Earth's surface. </p>



<p>The objective? To track the slightest movements on our planet, right down to the scale of an inch (2.5 centimeters).</p>



<p>From the growth of a forest to the motion of glaciers and the flex of Earth's crust - nothing will escape the watchful eye of NISAR.</p>



<p>Unlike conventional radar, SAR steps up its genius by capturing multiple measurements as it hovers above, thereby refining the scene below.</p>



<p>Think of it as looking at <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-earth-had-planetary-rings-like-saturn-466-million-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a> with a super-powered magnifying glass. The beauty of SAR is that it doesn't need massive antennae to function.</p>



<p>NISAR's radar antenna reflector, for instance, is 39 feet wide (around 12 meters) - as long as a city bus. Yet, without SAR, it would have to be a staggering 12 miles in diameter to achieve this level of precision.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-journey-of-sar">The journey of SAR</h2>



<p>SAR isn't a new technology. In the early 1970s, a team of engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory - including Caltech graduate Charles Elachi - developed SAR to study the surface of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-sends-missy-elliotts-hip-hop-music-to-venus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Venus</a>.</p>



<p>The experts realized the technology's potential to reveal intricate details of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-day-2023-20-reasons-to-cherish-our-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">our planet</a> and made it their mission to harness its power.</p>



<p>"The NISAR mission will open a whole new realm to learn about our planet as a dynamic system," said Elachi. </p>



<p>The advantage of radar lies in its ability to collect data both day and night, undeterred by clouds, which makes it a perfect tool for studying a distant planet.</p>



<p>The JPL venture led to many successful NASA space shuttle radar missions, with each one refining the use of SAR.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sar-a-high-resolution-solution">SAR: A high-resolution solution</h2>



<p>"It’s a technique to create high-resolution images from a low-resolution system," noted Paul Rosen, NISAR’s project scientist.</p>



<p>SAR works by constantly transmitting microwaves and receiving echoes from Earth's surface. As the satellite moves, these return signals exhibit slight changes in frequency.</p>



<p>This is where the magic happens. Akin to a camera lens focusing light to produce a photograph, SAR’s processing adjusts for these "shifts" to generate a sharp, focused image.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nisar-will-transform-earth-observation">NISAR will transform Earth observation</h2>



<p>Wondering how SAR will revolutionize our understanding of Earth? Imagine a composite of two images that reveals the slightest differences by measuring changes in echo delays - an interferogram.</p>



<p>Picture it as modern art, with each multicolor band signifying the motion of land surfaces. Or envision polarimetry, another SAR technique, which measures the orientation of return waves relative to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-details-on-wow-signal-transmitted-from-deep-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">transmitted signals</a>.</p>



<p>It's an insightful tool for identifying an area’s land cover and tracking changes such as deforestation and flooding. This will create exceptional opportunities for researchers across the globe.</p>



<p>"This mission packs in a wide range of science toward a common goal of studying our changing planet and the impacts of natural hazards," said Deepak Putrevu, co-lead of the Space Applications Centre in India.</p>



<p>Developed in partnership with NASA and the <a href="https://www.isro.gov.in/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Indian Space Research Organisation</a>, NISAR is set to take off from India in March 2025.</p>



<p>The mission will provide us with an unprecedented understanding of changes taking place on Earth's solid surfaces, including the Antarctic ice sheet.</p>



<p>The anticipation is building as we get ready to see our planet through SAR vision - revealing, insightful, and awe-inspiring.</p>

NISAR: The satellite that will change how we see Earth

A couple of months from now, the world will witness...

<p>More than 618,000 Americans will likely die from cancer in 2025 - a toll greater than wiping out two mid-sized California cities. </p>



<p>Beyond these fatalities, cancer touches nearly half of the country every year. Whether through a personal diagnosis or a loved one’s struggle, this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ketogenic-diet-may-help-the-body-kill-cancer-cells/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">disease</a> has a far-reaching impact that spans generations, communities, and economic classes.</p>



<p>For Jeff Yoshimi, a professor of cognitive science at UC Merced, cancer became personal when his wife, Sandy, was diagnosed with breast cancer. The disease had already spread to her lymph nodes by the time doctors discovered it. </p>



<p>What followed was a grueling journey of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and endless medications. Sandy’s battle took an emotional toll on Yoshimi, but it also ignited something within him - a determination to contribute to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/discovery-of-microrna-may-change-the-fight-against-cancer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fight against cancer</a> in a way that extended beyond his immediate circle.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-game-based-learning-and-cancer">Game-based learning and cancer</h2>



<p>One night, while staying with Sandy in the hospital, Yoshimi found himself drifting in and out of sleep. His mind, shaped by years of philosophy, cognitive science, and game-based learning, began piecing together an idea.</p>



<p>He understood cancer as an elusive enemy, constantly mutating and taking on new forms, making it difficult for researchers to keep up.</p>



<p>But what if the fight against cancer didn’t just rest in the hands of scientists and medical professionals? What if millions of minds - gamers, problem solvers, and puzzle enthusiasts - could be harnessed to help in this battle?</p>



<p>At that moment, inspiration struck. Yoshimi left the hospital and walked across the street to an all-night coffee shop. He pulled out his laptop and started typing. That night, a new approach to fighting cancer was born.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-actionable-plan-gaming-cancer">An actionable plan: Gaming cancer</h2>



<p>What Yoshimi envisioned was not just another research study, but a complete rethinking of how people engage with scientific problems.</p>



<p>He knew that video games had the power to captivate, challenge, and inspire players to solve complex problems. What if that power could be redirected toward <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/light-activated-molecules-kill-cancer-cells-with-precision/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cancer research</a>?</p>



<p>Over the next eleven years, that initial spark of an idea evolved into a compelling action plan, culminating in the book&nbsp;<em><a href="https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262550727/gaming-cancer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gaming Cancer</a></em>, published by MIT Press. </p>



<p>In it, Yoshimi explores how gamified citizen science, combined with artificial intelligence, can drive significant advances in cancer research. </p>



<p>The book argues that with the right structure, motivation, and technological framework, gamers could help accelerate discoveries in ways never before imagined.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-mission-fueled-by-loss">A mission fueled by loss</h2>



<p>Yoshimi’s mission was deeply personal. Sandy ultimately survived her battle with breast cancer, but cancer was not done with the family.</p>



<p>Shortly after he began writing the book, Sandy’s sister lost her life to colon cancer. In 2023, her father succumbed to bile duct cancer. These losses reinforced Yoshimi’s conviction that more had to be done.</p>



<p>“Much of this book was written in cancer wards and chemo rooms,” Yoshimi writes in the first chapter - a testament to the deeply personal nature of his work.</p>



<p>The book’s subtitle,&nbsp;<em>How Building and Playing Video Games Can Accelerate Scientific Discovery</em>, lays out its ambitious goal. It is not just about theorizing possibilities but providing a roadmap for turning this vision into reality.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-video-games-can-help-fight-cancer">Video games can help fight cancer</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/molecular-fingerprints-could-be-key-to-early-cancer-detection/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cancer research</a> is one of the most complex scientific fields, requiring immense resources and intellectual firepower. While artificial intelligence and machine learning have made tremendous strides, they still cannot replace the intuitive and creative problem-solving abilities of the human mind. </p>



<p>Yoshimi argues that by breaking down complex scientific problems into structured game mechanics, citizen scientists - everyday people - could contribute to real breakthroughs in cancer research.</p>



<p>Gamified citizen science is not an entirely new concept. There have already been smaller-scale successes in the field. </p>



<p>One example is&nbsp;<em>Foldit</em>, a game where players manipulate the structure of proteins. The results from this game have helped researchers better understand how proteins fold, an essential process in cellular biology. Protein misfolding is involved in many diseases, including cancer. </p>



<p>By turning this challenge into an engaging game,&nbsp;<em>Foldit</em>&nbsp;has enabled citizen scientists to contribute to real scientific advancements.</p>



<p>In 2020, approximately 750,000 people played&nbsp;<em>Foldit</em>, generating valuable insights for researchers. While this number is impressive, Yoshimi envisions something far bigger. </p>



<p>His goal is not just niche scientific games but blockbuster hits - games on the scale of <em>Baldur’s Gate</em> or <em>Candy Crush</em>, where millions of players worldwide can contribute to cancer research in meaningful ways.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-cognitive-science-to-gaming-cancer">From cognitive science to gaming cancer</h2>



<p>Yoshimi has long explored how visual tools and interactive learning can help people grasp complex ideas. In 2008, he created&nbsp;<em>Simbrain</em>, a software platform that allows users to build and explore neural networks using simplified visuals. </p>



<p>He has used it in his courses and research to help students understand neuroscience, psychology, and artificial intelligence.</p>



<p>Yoshimi's experience with game-like simulations and problem-solving tools made him uniquely suited to develop the concept of <em>Gaming Cancer</em>.</p>



<p>During an interview, Yoshimi recalled a childhood memory that helped shape his thinking. One day, while eating at a restaurant with his father, he noticed a young boy bouncing his knee rapidly under the table. </p>



<p>His father, an engineer, turned to him and said, “I wonder if we could make a little generator, attach it to that knee, and capture all that energy.”</p>



<p>That moment stuck with Yoshimi. It was a reminder that human ingenuity is everywhere - often in unexpected places. People naturally love solving problems. It is an intrinsic part of who we are.</p>



<p>The challenge, Yoshimi argues, is finding ways to channel that untapped intellectual energy toward something as meaningful as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microscopic-discovery-reveals-how-cancer-cells-grow-faster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cancer research</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-building-the-meta-game-for-cancer">Building the meta-game for cancer</h2>



<p>In&nbsp;<em>Gaming Cancer</em>, Yoshimi details what would be required to bring this idea to life. The creation of a large-scale citizen science gaming platform would require a combination of skilled programmers, innovative game designers, visionary leaders, and substantial financial investment. </p>



<p>The games would need to be engaging, rewarding, and seamlessly linked to real-world research.</p>



<p>At the heart of his vision is <em>Simbody</em>, a proposed game engine capable of simulating biological systems at various scales - from entire organs to microscopic cellular interactions. Players would take on different challenges, solving problems in ways that could provide real insights for scientists.</p>



<p>Yoshimi imagines a full suite of games, which he calls <em>Cancer Wars</em>, covering every genre - from action and adventure to RPGs, first-person shooters, and strategy games.</p>



<p>Each game would tackle a different aspect of the cancer battle, such as identifying patterns in genetic mutations and optimizing treatment strategies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-and-human-ingenuity-a-powerful-alliance">AI and human ingenuity: A powerful alliance</h2>



<p>Since Yoshimi first conceived this idea, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-is-the-next-frontier-in-cancer-treatment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">artificial intelligence</a> has made significant leaps, particularly with the rise of large language models like ChatGPT. </p>



<p>Some may wonder why human input is still necessary when AI can process massive amounts of data. Yoshimi believes that the best approach is a partnership between AI and human intelligence.</p>



<p>“We want to have human-AI symbiosis,” he noted. “AI can do raw number crunching and statistical generalization. Humans see the bigger picture, the relevance of one thing to another, the creative insight that a machine finds harder to capture.”</p>



<p>He likens this dynamic to famous sci-fi duos: Captain Picard and Data, Luke Skywalker and C-3PO, Kirk and Spock. AI can handle the brute force calculations, but humans bring intuition, creativity, and context.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-path-forward-in-the-cancer-fight">Path forward in the cancer fight</h2>



<p>Through&nbsp;<em>Gaming Cancer</em>, Yoshimi presents a roadmap for revolutionizing cancer research. </p>



<p>While the ultimate goal is to eradicate cancer, he emphasizes that even incremental victories - better detection, improved treatments, and increased public understanding - would be invaluable.</p>



<p>Cancer remains one of humanity’s deadliest adversaries, second only to heart disease in U.S. fatalities. With millions of gamers worldwide, why not mobilize that untapped potential for one of the most important fights of our time?</p>



<p>“It’s worth the effort,” Yoshimi said. “Even if you don’t hit the moon shot, all the intermediate shots are valuable.”</p>

<p>But as awe-inspiring as these solar eruptions are, they also carry potential dangers for technology and astronauts in space and to humans on Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solar-flares-and-flickering-loops">Solar flares and flickering loops</h2>



<p>A group of dedicated researchers has made a significant breakthrough in understanding solar flares. The team has been using NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory to observe the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-is-the-suns-corona-hotter-than-its-surface/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sun's corona</a>, or outer atmosphere.</p>



<p>The experts focused their attention on a peculiar phenomenon: loops of light flickering in the Sun's corona. </p>



<p>According to their observations, these flickering loops seem to serve as a lighted beacon signaling the onset of a massive solar flare.</p>



<p>This discovery holds enormous potential. It could assist NASA, along with other organizations involved in space and technology, to anticipate and protect against the harmful effects of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/space-weather-poses-significant-risks-to-railway-safety/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">space weather</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coronal-loops-and-solar-flares">Coronal loops and solar flares</h2>



<p>The research was led by Emily Mason, a heliophysicist at <a href="https://www.predsci.com/portal/home.php" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Predictive Sciences Inc</a>.</p>



<p>The team examined structures known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sun-covered-with-moss-peculiar-structure-sunspot-groups/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coronal loops</a>, which are arching, shimmering waves of light that jet out from magnetically charged areas of the Sun. It's in these active regions that solar flares find their birthplace.</p>



<p>The researchers analyzed coronal loops in close proximity to 50 strong solar flares. They observed the fluctuation in brightness of these loops in the hours leading up to the flare, and compared them to loops above areas of the Sun where no flares occurred.</p>



<p>The findings were intriguing: the loops above flare-active regions showed significantly more variations, serving as a kind of cosmic warning system.</p>



<p>"We found that some of the extreme ultraviolet light above active regions flickers erratically for a few hours before a solar flare. The results are really important for understanding flares and may improve our ability to predict dangerous space weather,” said Mason.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-solar-flares-the-basics">Understanding solar flares - the basics</h2>



<p>Solar flares are powerful explosions on the Sun’s surface that release immense amounts of energy, primarily in the form of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-can-comets-tell-us-about-solar-activity-and-space-weather/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">X-rays and ultraviolet radiation</a>.</p>



<p>These powerful eruptions appear in active areas around sunspots, where the Sun’s magnetic fields gets twisted and tangled. </p>



<p>When these magnetic fields suddenly snap back into place, through a process called magnetic reconnection, they shoot out particles at nearly the speed of light and blast <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lightning-sparks-the-discovery-of-a-new-electromagnetic-wave/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">electromagnetic radiation</a> into space.</p>



<p>The high-energy particles and radiation from a flare can mess with our planet’s magnetosphere, causing problems for satellites, GPS signals, and even power grids. </p>



<p>Plus, solar flares often come hand-in-hand with coronal mass ejections (<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/noaa-issues-severe-geomagnetic-storm-watch-first-time-since-2005/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CMEs</a>), which are huge bursts of solar wind and magnetic fields that can trigger geomagnetic storms.</p>



<p>But it’s not all bad news - solar flares also play a key role in creating those stunning auroras we love to watch, like the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/kinetx-rocket-experiment-how-are-auroras-made-closer-look-at-northern-lights/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Northern Lights</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-building-on-previous-research">Building on previous research</h2>



<p>The experts noted that more research is needed to strengthen the correlation, especially concerning stronger flares from the Sun where the flickering seems to peak earlier.</p>



<p>Various other groups of scientists have turned to different methods to predict solar flares, such as studying <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/solar-dynamo-sun-magnetic-field-origin-generated-near-surface/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">magnetic fields on the Sun</a> or searching for consistent patterns in other coronal loop features. </p>



<p>However, Mason and her colleagues propose that monitoring the brightness variations in coronal loops might offer a more accurate warning, as they predict incoming flares 2 to 6 hours in advance with a 60 to 80 percent accuracy rate.</p>



<p>“A lot of the predictive schemes that have been developed are still predicting the likelihood of flares in a given time period and not necessarily exact timing," explained Seth Garland, a team member from the <a href="https://www.afit.edu/ABOUT/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Air Force Institute of Technology</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-towards-a-safer-space">Towards a safer space</h2>



<p>The researchers believe their observations about coronal loops could significantly boost safety measures in space and on Earth, as they could protect astronauts, spacecraft, electrical grids, and other assets from harmful <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientist-sun-umbrella-tethered-to-an-asteroid-will-mitigate-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solar radiation</a>.</p>



<p>An automated system could potentially monitor real-time images of coronal loop brightness shifts from the Solar Dynamics Observatory, thus enabling scientists to issue timely alerts.</p>



<p>“We could build on this and come up with a well-tested and, ideally, simpler indicator ready for the leap from research to operations," said Vadim Uritsky, an expert in space physics at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (<a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GSFC</a>) and <a href="https://www.catholic.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Catholic University</a> in Washington D.C.</p>

<p>The discovery of flickering coronal loops as a precursor to solar flares opens up transformative possibilities in both research and technology. </p>



<p>By incorporating these findings into predictive algorithms, researchers hope to see the development of automated systems capable of monitoring solar activity in real-time.</p>



<p>Such systems could alert satellite operators and power grid managers to potential disruptions, minimizing economic losses and enhancing global preparedness.</p>



<p>Moreover, this breakthrough has implications for deep space exploration. As human missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond become more ambitious, the ability to predict solar flares with precision could be a vital tool for astronaut safety. </p>



<p>Protective measures, such as temporary shielding or adjustments to mission schedules, could be implemented based on timely warnings, which would ensure that missions proceed with minimal risk.</p>



<p>Ultimately, this research could serve as a foundation for the integration of solar weather data into everyday life, influencing decisions ranging from airline route planning to GPS optimization.</p>

<p>Shell-dwelling cichlids are known for their remarkable parental care, raising their young in abandoned snail shells.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Researchers from the <a href="https://www.bi.mpg.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence</a> have uncovered the intricate dynamics inside these shells using 3D-printed models.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings reveal synchronized but independent routines between mothers and their larvae, offering valuable insights into the species' brood care behaviors and innate biological processes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-delicate-balancing-act-of-cichilds">Delicate balancing act of cichilds</h2>



<p>For many species, deciding when offspring leave the safety of home is a delicate balancing act. </p>



<p>If the young depart too early, they risk being ill-equipped to survive; staying too long, however, can overstrain the parents’ resources. This pivotal moment can greatly impact the survival of both parents and offspring across the animal kingdom.</p>



<p>The team at Herwig Baier’s research department focused on <em>Lamprologus ocellatus</em>, a species of shell-dwelling cichlids found in Africa’s Lake Tanganyika. These fish exhibit highly <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/curiosity-of-cichlid-fish-boosts-biodiversity-in-lake-tanganyika/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social behavior</a> and devoted parental care, which is uncommon among many fish species. </p>



<p>Raising their offspring within abandoned snail shells adds an intriguing layer to their parenting, but until now, the activities within these homes remained largely a mystery.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-creative-solution-to-study-hidden-behaviors">Creative solution to study hidden behaviors</h2>



<p>To investigate the hidden world inside the shells, lead researcher Ash Parker and her colleagues devised an ingenious method. They used 3D printers to create modified snail shells, designed to function as optimal homes for the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fish-diversity-has-changed-dramatically-on-the-great-barrier-reef/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish</a> while leaving one side open.&nbsp;</p>



<p>When these shells were placed against the aquarium glass, researchers could capture videos and photos of the cichlids' behaviors.</p>



<p>Using AI-assisted image analysis, the team identified fascinating behaviors unfolding in a precise sequence.&nbsp;</p>



<p>After the mother lays the eggs in the upper chamber of the snail shell, the father fertilizes them. After two to three days, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/healthy-reef-sounds-inspire-coral-larvae-growth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">larvae</a> hatch and the mother carries them with her mouth to the lowest chamber of the shell.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dedicated-maternal-care-of-cichlids-nbsp">Dedicated maternal care of cichlids&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Throughout the early days of the larvae’s development, the mother remains vigilant. She not only guards the shell but actively tends to the eggs and larvae by cleaning them with her mouth.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Additionally, she uses rapid movements of her rear fins to ensure a steady flow of fresh water inside the shell, maintaining optimal conditions for her young.</p>



<p>By the seventh or eighth day, the larvae begin feeding independently and make tentative attempts at swimming. However, they remain in the darker, lower chambers of the shell until the ninth day, when their behavior undergoes a dramatic shift.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cichlids-ready-to-leave-the-shell">Cichlids ready to leave the shell</h2>



<p>On the ninth day after fertilization, the larvae show a sudden preference for brighter areas. This intrinsic change in light sensitivity appears to signal their readiness to leave the shell for the first time.</p>



<p>The timing of their emergence, however, also relies on their mother’s brood-care efforts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>When the researchers removed the mother from the setup, the larvae left the shell earlier, likely due to deteriorating water quality caused by the absence of her fin fanning.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-independent-but-synchronized-schedules">Independent but synchronized schedules</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the mother’s behavior follows a separate internal schedule. When presented with an older clutch of larvae that swam out earlier than she anticipated, she actively pushed them back into the shell, disregarding their advanced development.</p>



<p>These observations show that both the mother and the offspring follow independent, innate schedules that are nevertheless perfectly synchronized. Both mother and juveniles seem to instinctively align their routines, agreeing that the ninth day marks the ideal time for the young to leave the shell.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-evolution-and-behavior">Implications for evolution and behavior</h2>



<p>This study offers a rare glimpse into the intricate processes governing parental care in shell-dwelling cichlids. By identifying innate behavioral patterns and their coordination, the research lays the groundwork for exploring the evolutionary and neurological underpinnings of such complex behaviors.</p>



<p>The findings also highlight the role of environmental conditions, maternal intervention, and innate biological timing in ensuring the successful transition of offspring to independence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Much like humans, mice engage in territory and mate competitions, displaying increased confidence and aggression as they accumulate victories.</p>



<p>A recent study has revealed the critical influence of dopamine, a potent brain chemical, in aggressive behavior.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dopamine-and-male-aggression">Dopamine and male aggression</h2>



<p>While dopamine has been associated with male aggression for many years, the influence of past experiences on this relationship has remained a mystery. </p>



<p>A group of researchers from <a href="https://nyulangone.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NYU Langone Health</a> decided to dig deeper, particularly focusing on the role of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dopamine-enhances-brain-function-during-exercise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dopamine</a>.</p>



<p>The team discovered that young, inexperienced male mice, when given a dopamine boost, fought twice as long as they would naturally fight.</p>



<p>Blocking the release of dopamine from certain cells made these novice fighters completely passive. </p>



<p>However, this was not the case for males with extensive fighting experience. Regardless of the increase or decrease of dopamine, the duration of their attacks remained the same. </p>



<p>Interestingly, the researchers noted that more victories bred more challenges, with victorious mice instigating more fights in the future.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dopamine-aggression-and-fighting-experience">Dopamine, aggression, and fighting experience</h2>



<p>Study senior author Dr. Dayu Lin is a professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.</p>



<p>“Our findings offer new insight into how both ‘nature’ and ‘nurture’ shape aggression in males,” said Dr. Lin. "While aggression is an innate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/science-behind-predicting-and-changing-human-behavior/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">behavior</a>, dopamine - and fighting experience - is essential for its maturation during adulthood.”</p>



<p>The research wasn't restricted to the relationship between dopamine and aggression. The team also explored the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/from-daydream-to-awareness-the-brains-alert-mechanism/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain mechanisms</a> at play during aggression learning.</p>



<p>They blocked dopamine release in certain brain areas related to aggression regulation and observed that novices stopped learning to fight, while experienced fighters continued their aggressive behavior.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-diminishing-role-of-dopamine">The diminishing role of dopamine</h2>



<p>As the mice gained experience, the initial dopamine release in the brain became less potent, suggesting dopamine’s critical role in initial aggression learning. </p>



<p>The research also debunked any similar role of dopamine in female aggression, as altering dopamine levels did not affect female mice's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tourists-cause-anxiety-elephants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aggressive behaviors</a>.</p>



<p>Dr. Lin believes the results could potentially assist in addressing mental health conditions characterized by intense mood and behavior shifts, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and borderline personality disorder.</p>



<p>“Our results suggest that targeting dopamine may not be an effective tool when treating those with a long history of aggression,” noted Dr. Lin. “As a result, healthcare providers may need to consider a patient’s history, as well as their age and sex, when considering which therapy to use.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-antipsychotic-medications-in-humans">Antipsychotic medications in humans</h2>



<p>These findings may further explain why antipsychotic drugs have a stronger and longer-lasting effect in children than in adults, as adult aggression often resurfaces once they stop receiving medication. </p>



<p>However, Dr. Lin cautions that while mice share similar brain chemistry with people and the current findings echo human clinical results, further research is needed to establish the influence of past behavior on the effectiveness of antipsychotic medications in humans.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-human-behavior-and-mental-health">Implications for human behavior and mental health</h2>



<p>Even though the study was focused on mice, the findings open up intriguing questions about human aggression and behavior regulation.</p>



<p>The experts believe that the interplay between dopamine and experience could help explain why some individuals exhibit persistent aggressive tendencies, while others learn to regulate their responses over time.</p>



<p>This research may have implications for understanding behavioral disorders such as conduct disorder, intermittent explosive disorder, and even workplace aggression.</p>



<p>Management strategies for aggression are complex. Interventions that focus exclusively on dopamine systems may not be effective, as long-standing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pandemic-restrictions-had-a-lasting-effect-on-behavior-patterns/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">patterns of behavior</a> often require a more comprehensive approach.</p>



<p>Experts propose that a well-balanced application of behavioral therapy and medication for such conditions may result in better handling of aggression-related conditions.</p>



<p>While exploring the connection between brain chemicals and learned behaviors, scientists aim to develop more precise methods for treating mental health conditions, taking into account an individual’s life experiences and unique neurochemical responses.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
