<p>A small, cool star 40 light-years away has a planet that just might hold on to an atmosphere. Astronomers used the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to watch that world, TRAPPIST-1e, pass in front of its star four times and extract the planet’s faint atmospheric fingerprint.</p>



<p>A new paper reports those observations and what they can - and cannot - show about the gases above this rocky surface. </p>



<p>The team can already reject a thick, hydrogen-dominated atmosphere, but the data are not yet strong enough to prove what is there on the planet instead.</p>



<p>Néstor Espinoza from the <a href="https://www.stsci.edu/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Space Telescope Science Institute</a> (STScI) led the analysis with the JWST Telescope Scientist Team.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-star-activity-masks-trappist-1e">Star activity masks TRAPPIST-1e</h2>



<p>TRAPPIST-1 is a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/planets-orbiting-red-dwarf-stars-may-not-be-habitable-ultraviolet-uv-radiation/">red dwarf star</a>, a compact and relatively cool star type that often flares and develops spots in ways that upset precise measurements. </p>



<p>That activity complicates the search for air around its planets because changes from the star can masquerade as signs from a planet’s atmosphere.</p>



<p>TRAPPIST-1e sits in the star’s habitable zone - the region where a planet could support liquid water on its surface if pressure and temperature are suitable. </p>



<p>That alone does not make it hospitable, since the star’s outbursts could strip or scramble any atmosphere over time.</p>



<p>Earlier Webb data on the inner siblings, such as TRAPPIST-1b, found little evidence of a substantial atmosphere. </p>



<p>That result keeps expectations in check and places more weight on careful, repeated measurements for the middle worlds.</p>



<p>NASA shared a technical feature explaining that the first four TRAPPIST-1e observations are not enough to confirm an atmosphere. </p>



<p>The figure shows that models with and without an atmosphere still overlap in the range allowed by today’s data.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-telescope-actually-measured">What the telescope actually measured</h2>



<p>TRAPPIST-1e is an exoplanet, a planet beyond our solar system. When it crosses the star, a tiny bit of starlight filters through any air at the planet’s edge, and that light carries molecular fingerprints.</p>



<p>This method is called transmission spectroscopy, and it spreads the light into wavelengths to see where particular gases absorb. </p>



<p>Webb’s NIRSpec instrument recorded four such transits in 2023, covering wavelengths where gases like water vapor, methane, and carbon dioxide could show up clearly.</p>



<p>Because the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/interstellar-tunnel-cosmic-channel-discovered-connects-our-solar-system-to-other-stars/">star</a> itself has features that can change over minutes to hours, the team built models to separate stellar effects from any possible planetary signals. </p>



<p>They also combined the four events to reduce random noise while being careful not to blur out real, repeatable features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-no-primary-atmosphere-detected">No primary atmosphere detected</h2>



<p>A hydrogen-rich atmosphere on the planet would have produced large, easily seen features in the spectrum. </p>



<p>The team reports that such primary atmospheres - dominated by hydrogen at levels above roughly 80 percent by volume - are inconsistent with the data.</p>



<p>Ana Glidden is a postdoctoral researcher in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences and the MIT <a href="https://www.space.mit.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research.</a></p>



<p>“The idea is: If we assume that the planet is not airless, can we constrain different atmospheric scenarios? Do those scenarios still allow for liquid water at the surface?” she said. </p>



<p>Glidden noted that the results rule out a hydrogen-dominated atmosphere and tighten limits on several secondary-atmosphere scenarios.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A warm, nitrogen-rich mix remains possible, along with other secondary atmospheres that could arise from volcanic outgassing. </p>



<p>Those would appear much subtler in the data than hydrogen and require more than four transits to emerge from the noise.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stellar-flares-complicate-tests">Stellar flares complicate tests</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trappist-1-has-seven-earth-like-planets-that-may-support-life/">TRAPPIST-1</a>’s surface has star spots and frequent flares that change its spectrum over time. </p>



<p>That “stellar contamination” can either add or remove features in the planetary spectrum and, if not modeled correctly, can be misleading.</p>



<p>To tackle that, the authors used Gaussian processes, a flexible statistical tool that learns the typical shape and size of the star’s variations and then subtracts them. </p>



<p>That approach does not assume a perfect star model, which is wise when the star is as active as this one.</p>



<p>The goal is to treat any wiggles that change from one visit to the next as coming from the star, and any persistent pattern as likely belonging to the planet. Webb’s stability helps here, but the source star’s behavior still sets the pace.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-trappist-1e-air-circulation">TRAPPIST-1e air circulation</h2>



<p>A nitrogen-rich atmosphere would resemble Earth in broad strokes, though details such as oxygen, water vapor, and methane would matter greatly. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nitrogen-was-plentiful-for-early-life-on-earth/">Nitrogen</a> alone does not prove anything about life on the planet, but it suggests a heavier, secondary atmosphere capable of maintaining surface pressure.</p>



<p>“We are seeing two possible explanations," said Ryan MacDonald, Lecturer in Extrasolar Planets in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the <a href="https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of St Andrews</a>.</p>



<p>"The most exciting possibility is that TRAPPIST-1e could have a so-called secondary atmosphere containing heavy gases like nitrogen. But our initial observations cannot yet rule out a bare rock with no atmosphere.” </p>



<p>Independent of biology, an atmosphere changes surface temperature and how heat moves from day to night. On a tidally locked world, that could be the difference between an ice cap and a stable ocean.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-webb-and-trappist-1e">Webb and TRAPPIST-1e</h2>



<p>The team plans many more transits to shrink error bars and test for specific gases. More visits let the statistics work, and they also average over the star’s mood swings.</p>



<p>“In the coming years we will go from four JWST observations of TRAPPIST-1e to nearly twenty," said MacDonald. </p>



<p>"We finally have the telescope and tools to search for habitable conditions in other star systems, which makes today one of the most exciting times for astronomy.”</p>



<p>As the dataset grows, scientists can check for methane and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-dioxide-hydrogen-peroxide-discovered-on-plutos-moon-charon/">carbon dioxide</a> together and run climate models that test whether liquid water could persist at the surface. </p>



<p>Caution remains the watchword until a clear atmospheric pattern repeats across many passes.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-words-and-brain-control">Words and brain control</h2>



<p>A team of researchers from <a href="https://www.vt.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Virginia Tech</a> embarked on a study that illuminated how our brains engage with the emotional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/power-of-words-how-language-framing-shapes-our-perception/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">content of words</a>.</p>



<p>At the heart of this research was the investigation of neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers of our nervous systems. </p>



<p>These neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin, long thought to simply broadcast signals related to positive or negative experiences, were found to play a more nuanced role.</p>



<p>The team's findings, shared by computational neuroscientist Read Montague, revealed these chemicals to be released in distinct regions of the brain when we process the emotional significance of words. </p>



<p>“Our research supports the idea that the brain systems that evolved to help us react to good or bad things in our environment might also play a role in how we process words, which are just as important for our survival,” he explains.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-processes-emotional-language">How the brain processes emotional language</h2>



<p>The research team sought to measure dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine release in the context of complex brain dynamics behind our interpretation and response to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-humans-felt-emotions-in-unusual-body-parts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">language</a>.</p>



<p>According to Montague, this process doesn't function through a single brain region or a solitary neurotransmitter representing one emotion. </p>



<p>Instead, words' emotional content interacts with several transmitter systems, each fluctuating differently to process the emotions attached to language.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-words-under-the-microscope">Words under the microscope</h2>



<p>Neurochemical measurements were conducted on patients undergoing specific neurological procedures. </p>



<p>They displayed emotionally charged words on a screen and monitored the neurotransmitter release in disparate brain regions. </p>



<p>The measurements uncovered that the words modulated neurotransmitter release according to their emotional tone. </p>



<p>Researchers even observed neurotransmitter activity in the thalamus, a region not typically associated with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/emotional-facial-expressions-are-not-universally-understood/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">language</a> or emotions, indicating that other brain areas might have access to emotionally significant information.</p>



<p>“This suggests that even brain regions not typically associated with emotional or linguistic processing might still be privy to that information," noted assistant professor William “Matt” Howe.</p>



<p>"For instance, parts of the brain responsible for mobilizing movement might benefit from having access to emotionally significant information to guide behavior.” </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extrapolating-to-the-animal-kingdom">Extrapolating to the animal kingdom</h2>



<p>While the primary discovery was in humans, the researchers sought validation in animal models, successfully confirming the patterns observed in humans across different species.</p>



<p>Alec Hartle, co-author of the study, conducted detailed experiments in rodent models to closely examine the functions of specific neurons, neural circuits, and their role in processing emotionally charged language cues.</p>



<p>“What we observed in the human brain was extraordinary,” said Howe. “The validation in animals supports and solidifies the broader implications of these neurotransmitters in decision-making systems.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-words-that-shape-our-brains">Words that shape our brains</h2>



<p>The study used words from a database that rates emotions linked with words, helping the researchers to explain their intriguing findings better. </p>



<p>“While previous studies focused on neurotransmission during decision-making, this research explores something uniquely human: the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/future-tech-will-track-emotions-through-changes-in-our-skin/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emotional content</a> of written words,” said Seth Batten, the study's first author and a senior research associate with the Montague laboratory.</p>



<p>“Unlike animals, humans can understand words, their context, and meaning. The study examines how neurotransmitter systems process words with different emotional weight, reflecting the hypothesis that these systems, which evolved to keep us alive, now also help interpret language.”</p>



<p>While still in the early stages, this exciting research opens the door to a host of fascinating questions, positioning us for a future where we better understand the emotional weight of our words.</p>

<p>Antarctica’s vast ice sheet, holding over half of Earth’s freshwater, plays a critical role in regulating the planet’s climate and sea levels. The continent's ice shelves, large floating extensions of ice over the ocean, are of particular interest.</p>



<p>Observations show that many of these ice shelves are thinning due to melting from below, with profound implications for ocean dynamics and global sea levels.</p>



<p>Among these, the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf stands out. Spanning the Weddell Sea, it is one of Antarctica’s largest ice shelves. Fortunately, it remains relatively stable for now. Near-freezing currents circulating beneath the shelf provide a protective buffer. </p>



<p>However, climate models warn that warmer currents may reach this region in the future, potentially destabilizing the shelf.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ice-shelf-dynamics-in-antarctica">Ice shelf dynamics in Antarctica </h2>



<p>To predict the future of the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, N. Steiger and colleagues from <a href="https://www.sorbonne-universite.fr" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sorbonne Université</a> conducted a detailed analysis of ocean data collected between 2017 and 2021. </p>



<p>The team used sensors placed on the seafloor (moored instruments) and on floating devices beneath the water's surface.</p>



<p>These tools recorded water temperature and velocity, providing a wealth of information about how ocean currents interact with the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melting-ice-in-antarctica-could-wake-sleeping-volcanoes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice shelf</a>. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-previous-observations-and-limitations">Previous observations and limitations</h2>



<p>Earlier research had identified a recurring phenomenon: in summer, warm seawater rises from middle ocean depths and flows along the Filchner Trough - a deep undersea valley - toward the edge of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/emergency-meeting-reveals-the-alarming-extent-of-antarcticas-ice-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice</a> shelf.</p>



<p>However, these studies were often limited to a single location or a short timeframe, which left gaps in understanding the broader system.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warming-of-antarctica-s-ice-shelves">Warming of Antarctica's ice shelves</h2>



<p>The new study revealed a more intricate system of water movement. Warm water doesn't only follow the main Filchner Trough but also uses a smaller, eastern trough. Importantly, the role of each pathway varies from year to year.</p>



<p>During years with higher-than-average temperatures, warm water moves faster and more extensively across the continental shelf. This increases the likelihood of warm water reaching the ice shelf and potentially contributing to its melting.</p>



<p>Steiger’s research highlights the importance of long-term and multi-site observations to grasp the complex interactions between ocean currents and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-ice-sheet-patterns-point-to-rapid-melting-risks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Antarctic</a> ice shelves. These insights improve predictions about how warming oceans may affect the stability of ice shelves and contribute to rising sea levels globally.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warm-summers-and-ice-shelf-changes">Warm summers and ice shelf changes</h2>



<p>The researchers identified 2017 and 2018 as exceptional summers, characterized by unusually warm water flowing into the region and a significant reduction in floating sea <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-ice-sheet-past-present-and-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice</a>. These conditions were crucial because sea ice acts as a barrier that influences ocean behavior.</p>



<p>When there is less sea ice, the ocean becomes more dynamic, enabling warm water from deeper layers to rise and spread across the continental shelf more easily.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-did-the-warm-water-reach-the-ice-shelf">Did the warm water reach the ice shelf?</h2>



<p>Although it remains uncertain whether the warm water in 2017 and 2018 actually reached the edge of Antarctica's Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, there is evidence from 2013 suggesting similar warm water flows did reach the shelf’s edge during that year. </p>



<p>In 2013, researchers linked this movement of warm water to specific wind patterns that likely drove the flow toward the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-will-the-antarctic-ice-sheet-collapse/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice shelf</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-of-reduced-sea-ice">Implications of reduced sea ice</h2>



<p>The lack of sea ice doesn't just alter the flow of warm water; it also allows the warm water to interact more directly with the continental shelf and potentially with the ice shelf itself. </p>



<p>Understanding how these dynamics play out under varying conditions is critical for predicting future changes in Antarctic ice shelves and their contribution to rising sea levels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-ahead">Looking ahead</h2>



<p>Identifying the drivers of warm water flow beneath Antarctic ice shelves remains a priority. As Steiger’s work shows, year-to-year variability in ocean currents and ice cover can significantly influence the shelf’s stability.</p>



<p>Continued observations and advanced modeling are crucial to predicting how these massive ice shelves will respond to shifting climate patterns.</p>



<p>This research emphasizes the need for continued monitoring and vigilance. The stability of Antarctica’s ice shelves holds the key to the planet’s future sea levels and climate health.</p>

<p>Now, a study from the DRI (Desert Research Institute) transforms this tantalizing concept into reality, providing a fascinating glimpse into past environmental pollution and its effect on human health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dirty-facts-from-the-cleanest-places">Dirty facts from the cleanest places</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-sea-ice-is-headed-toward-a-historic-low/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic</a>, an untouched frozen wilderness, surprisingly holds long-forgotten records of human activity in its icy depths.</p>



<p>In recent decades, DRI scientists have climbed the highest peaks and drilled deep into the Arctic ice, to extract precious ice cores.</p>



<p>Embedded throughout these ice cores are tiny bubbles of air, meticulously preserved, that contain microscopic clues about the earth's atmosphere at the time that layer of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-melting-arctic-sea-ice-could-disrupt-earths-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice</a> was created.</p>



<p>These bubbles are like natural time capsules, and contain a treasure trove of information that allows scientists to track the levels of atmospheric lead <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lead-pollution-has-made-its-way-to-the-top-of-the-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollution</a> over centuries.</p>



<p>For the past 20 years, researchers at the McConnell Ice Core Laboratory at DRI have been cracking open these icy time capsules. </p>



<p>Their objective? They hope to race the pollution record of the distant past and understand how it continues to impact us.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arctic-ice-reveals-ancient-lead-pollution">Arctic ice reveals ancient lead pollution</h2>



<p>Through these ice cores, <a href="https://www.dri.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DRI</a> researchers have been able to travel in time, back to the era of the Roman Empire, specifically to the Pax Romana - a 200-year period of relative peace and stability.</p>



<p>During this time, Roman civilization saw a significant increase in mining and smelting operations across Europe.</p>



<p>The unfortunate byproduct of this prosperity was lead pollution.</p>



<p>"This is the first study to take a pollution record from an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rapid-antarctic-sea-ice-loss-is-causing-severe-storms-around-the-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice</a> core and invert it to get atmospheric concentrations of pollution and then assess human impacts," enthused Joe McConnell, the study's lead author.</p>



<p>"The idea that we can do this for 2,000 years ago is pretty novel and exciting." </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-smelting-process-in-ancient-rome">Smelting process in ancient Rome</h2>



<p>During the Roman Empire, smelting was a crucial process that allowed Romans to extract valuable metals like iron, copper, and lead from their ores. </p>



<p>They set up large furnaces called bloomeries for iron and furnaces for other metals, where they would heat the ore with charcoal in the presence of a strong airflow. </p>



<p>This intense heat caused the metal to separate from the rocky ore, melting and collecting at the bottom of the furnace. </p>



<p>Skilled workers, known as metallurgists, carefully managed the temperature and airflow to ensure the metals melted correctly without wasting fuel or damaging the furnace. </p>



<p>Once the metal was extracted, the Romans used it to create everything from weapons and tools to intricate artworks and building materials. </p>



<p>For example, iron was essential for making swords and armor for their armies, while copper and tin were combined to produce bronze, used in statues and coins. </p>



<p>Lead was used extensively in plumbing and construction, showcasing the Romans' advanced engineering skills.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mapping-the-course-of-lead-pollution">Mapping the course of lead pollution</h2>



<p>By analyzing the lead isotopes in the ice cores, the researchers tracked the rise and fall of lead pollution levels between 500 BCE and 600 CE.</p>



<p>They found that lead pollution first began to surge during the Iron Age, and peaked during the late 2nd century BCE during the height of the Roman Republic.</p>



<p>After a sharp decline during the 1st-century crisis, it rose once more around 15 BCE, following the rise of the Roman Empire.</p>



<p>The researchers estimate that during the height of the Roman Empire, over 500 kilotons of lead were discharged into the atmosphere, primarily as a byproduct of silver mining. </p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-day-2024-the-tide-may-finally-be-turning/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">silver lining</a> of this cloud of lead pollution is that it helped to link lead pollution records to historical events and socio-economic changes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-legacy-of-lead-pollution">Legacy of lead pollution</h2>



<p>Despite the initial decline of lead pollution following the fall of the Roman Empire, it wasn't until the early 2nd millennium CE that lead pollution in the Arctic began to dwarf even the high levels seen during the Roman era. </p>



<p>This chronic exposure to lead pollution has left a lasting legacy in the form of continuous negative health impacts.</p>



<p>"Lead is known to have a wide range of human health impacts, but we chose to focus on cognitive decline because it’s something we can put a number on," explained the study coauthor, Nathan Chellman, who is assistant research professor of snow and ice hydrology at DRI.</p>



<p>"An IQ reduction of 2 to 3 points doesn't sound like much, but when you apply that to essentially the entire European population, it’s kind of a big deal.” </p>

<p>The audience held their breath in unison, captivated by the emotional pull of the music. When the melodies turned poignant, a shared stillness fell over the crowd. These remarkable reactions were among the early findings from the world's largest music experiment, conducted in June 2024.</p>



<p>Music researcher Alexander Refsum Jensenius collaborated with the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation's orchestra (KORK) and the radio program&nbsp;<em>Abels tårn</em>&nbsp;to explore the profound effects of live music. </p>



<p>"A lot of music research has focused on reading sheet music. We study music as an experience, looking at what it does to our bodies, thoughts, and emotions. To do that, it's important to step out of the lab," Jensenius explained.</p>



<p>As the head of RITMO, a Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Rhythm, Time, and Motion at the University of Oslo, Jensenius led a remarkable initiative.</p>



<p>The experiment involved musicians, audience members, and even radio listeners, using cutting-edge technology to measure physiological responses to music.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-emotional-music-creates-unity">Emotional music creates unity </h2>



<p>During the experiment, researchers used advanced tools to measure how people physically responded to live <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/music-has-the-power-to-change-the-mood-of-our-memories/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">music</a>. </p>



<p>Musicians and some audience members wore special vests equipped with sensors that tracked their breathing, heart rate, and physical movements.</p>



<p>The conductor used a motion-tracking suit and glasses, which monitored his hand gestures and gaze as he directed the orchestra. </p>



<p>To study audience movements, reflective wristbands captured their motions, recorded by an infrared camera. Radio listeners, though not physically present, participated by answering surveys about their emotional reactions, adding valuable data to the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stillness-effect-of-emotionally-charged-music">Stillness effect of emotionally charged music</h2>



<p>An intriguing discovery from this data was the "stillness effect." While music often encourages physical movement, such as tapping feet or swaying, the opposite occurred during certain emotionally charged moments. </p>



<p>These intense sections of music caused the audience to sit completely still, as if transfixed. </p>



<p>"We clearly observed that, at certain moments during the concert, the music compelled the audience to sit perfectly still," explained Jensenius.</p>



<p>This collective stillness reflected a profound shared <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/live-music-evokes-stronger-emotions-than-streamed-music/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emotional experience</a>, creating a deeper bond between the audience members and enhancing their sense of connection.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-concerts-as-catalysts-for-community">Concerts as catalysts for community</h2>



<p>Jensenius highlighted the social dynamics of concerts, describing how they create bonds among strangers. </p>



<p>"As social creatures, this likely explains why concerts are so popular. Findings regarding audience movement, stillness, and synchronized breathing illustrate how attending a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/play-any-kind-of-music-to-make-art-an-emotional-experience/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">concert</a> integrates us into a community," he noted.</p>



<p>Listening to live concerts on the radio also evoked a heightened emotional response compared to recordings. This highlights the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-music-help-plants-grow/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">unique engagement</a> that live performances inspire, even from afar.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-music-evokes-deep-memories">Music evokes deep memories </h2>



<p>One particularly poignant moment occurred during a Beethoven piece that KORK had performed at the memorial ceremony following a terror attack in Norway. </p>



<p>Musicians and audience members alike experienced a wave of powerful emotions, highlighting music's ability to evoke deep memories.</p>



<p>Among the audience, composer Edward Elgar's "Nimrod" from the&nbsp;<em>Enigma Variations</em>&nbsp;elicited a strong reaction, with many reporting goosebumps. Data revealed heightened heart rate variability, a physiological marker of emotional arousal.  </p>



<p>"People who score high on empathy tend to be more emotionally moved by music than others," said Jensenius.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-performances-without-a-conductor">Performances without a conductor</h2>



<p>The experiment also examined how the presence or absence of a conductor influenced both the musicians and the audience. In one scenario, the conductor led the performance as usual, guiding the musicians with gestures and cues. </p>



<p>In another, the conductor stepped aside, joined the orchestra as a player, and left the musicians to perform without a leader. This required the musicians to communicate more directly with one another, relying on heightened eye contact, attentive listening, and mutual understanding to keep the performance cohesive.</p>



<p>This shift significantly changed the dynamics of the performance. Without the guiding presence of a conductor, the musicians became more engaged with each other, promoting a stronger sense of collaboration and spontaneity. The music gained a unique intensity and energy, reflecting the musicians' active interaction and shared responsibility.</p>



<p>Interestingly, the audience's physiological responses mirrored this heightened dynamism. Data collected during the conductor-less performance indicated an increase in heart rate and engagement among audience members. </p>



<p>These findings suggest that while a conductor can create polished and seamless performances, the raw, vibrant energy of a conductor-less orchestra resonates deeply - making the music feel more alive and emotionally impactful.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-synchronizing-hearts-and-minds">Synchronizing hearts and minds</h2>



<p>Preliminary findings suggest that musicians and audience members may synchronize their breathing during certain moments. This builds on prior research showing that musicians' heartbeats can synchronize during <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/song-melodies-have-become-much-simpler-since-1950/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">performances</a>. </p>



<p>"Music is a universal phenomenon, present in every culture and integral to daily life and ceremonies. But why does music have such a profound effect on us, and how can that power be harnessed? That's what we aim to offer more insight into," said Jensenius.</p>

<p>Montana rancher Arthur “Jack” Schubarth has been handed a six-month prison sentence for smuggling and using genetic material from protected sheep to create larger-than-average hybrids.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The 81-year-old, who owns a 215-acre livestock ranch, aimed to sell these gigantic sheep to commercial hunting sites.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-smuggling-rare-sheep-genetics">Smuggling rare sheep genetics</h2>



<p>The initial plan stretched over several years, beginning around 2013. <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/montana-man-sentenced-federal-wildlife-trafficking-charges-part-yearslong-effort-create" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Court documents</a> show that Schubarth brought parts of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marco_Polo_sheep" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Marco Polo argali sheep</a> into the country from Kyrgyzstan without lawful documentation.</p>



<p>He saw a business opportunity in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/experts-are-using-forensic-science-to-fight-wildlife-trafficking/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">breeding</a> this majestic animal, known for its lengthy, curling horns and hefty size. </p>



<p>He hoped a hybrid species would fetch more money in captive hunting markets, which feature exotic or oversized animals for high-paying clients.</p>



<p>Crossbreeding non-native sheep can threaten nearby wild herds by introducing diseases or interbreeding with local species.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These animals are protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (<a href="https://cites.org/eng/disc/what.php" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CITES</a>) and the <a href="https://www.fws.gov/law/endangered-species-act" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Endangered Species Act </a>and are banned in Montana to safeguard native sheep from disease and genetic mixing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-marco-polo-argali-sheep">Understanding Marco Polo argali sheep</h2>



<p>Named after the famous explorer, Marco Polo argali sheep roam the high-altitude steppes and rocky terrains, showcasing their incredible adaptability to harsh environments. </p>



<p>They boast large, curling horns that can span up to four feet, making them one of the most striking wild sheep species in the world. </p>



<p>Their thick, woolly coats keep them warm against the cold mountain winds, while their agile legs allow them to navigate steep cliffs and rocky outcrops with ease.</p>



<p>Conservation efforts play a crucial role in protecting the Marco Polo argali, as their populations face threats from habitat loss, poaching, and climate change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-illegal-sheep-hybrid-aimed-at-profit">Illegal sheep hybrid aimed at profit</h2>



<p>Once Schubarth sneaked the argali parts into Montana, he delivered genetic samples to a laboratory that transformed them into embryos. </p>



<p>These embryos were then implanted in ewes on his ranch. In a single instance, the outcome was a pure genetic Marco Polo argali, nicknamed Montana Mountain King (MMK).&nbsp;</p>



<p>Schubarth began selling MMK’s semen to out-of-state <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rats-can-sniff-out-horns-and-tusks-to-combat-wildlife-trafficking/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">breeders</a>. He also used it on different species of ewes to get an even larger hybrid, despite strict prohibitions on such animals within Montana.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildlife-laws-and-monetary-motive">Wildlife laws and monetary motive</h2>



<p>Schubarth violated the <a href="https://fws.gov/law/lacey-act" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lacey Act</a>, a federal law banning interstate trade of wildlife taken or sold unlawfully. He also offended Montana <a href="https://archive.legmt.gov/bills/2013/mca/81/2/81-2-703.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">statutes</a> that forbid bringing in certain animals and forging health certificates.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Schubarth’s criminal conduct is not how Montanans treat our wildlife population,” said <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-mt/meet-us-attorney" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jesse Laslovich</a>, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Montana.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hybrid-sheep-threaten-local-wildlife">Hybrid sheep threaten local wildlife</h2>



<p>The risk of contagious diseases was a major concern. <a href="https://www.aphis.usda.gov/print/pdf/node/1944#:~:text=Johne's%20disease%20is%20a%20contagious,agents%20of%20leprosy%20and%20TB." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Johne’s disease</a>, a chronic wasting illness that spreads easily among hooved animals, appeared in some of Schubarth’s stock.</p>



<p>If infections had spread to Montana’s native bighorn sheep, entire herds could have been harmed. Bighorns are already vulnerable, and hybridization can damage their genetic integrity, according to ongoing research in wildlife ecology.</p>



<p>“This case exemplifies the serious threat that <a href="https://www.ice.gov/features/wildlife" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildlife trafficking</a> poses to our native species and ecosystems,” said Assistant Director <a href="https://www.fws.gov/staff-profile/edward-grace" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Edward Grace</a> of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Office of Law Enforcement.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Marco Polo argali itself is protected under the Endangered Species Act and monitored internationally by CITIES.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-consequences-of-illegal-crossbreeding">Consequences of illegal crossbreeding</h2>



<p>Schubarth's focus on profit over preservation has led to serious consequences for creating illegal sheep hybrids.</p>



<p>Aside from serving six months in federal prison, the rancher must pay a $20,000 fine to the Lacey Act Reward Fund and make a $4,000 payment to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (<a href="https://www.nfwf.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NFWF</a>).</p>



<p>Officials say he put not only argali and bighorn sheep at risk but also any future livestock he managed. Mixing genetics of endangered or prohibited species can set dangerous precedents that undermine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-wildlife-conservation-day-2024-saving-species-from-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conservation efforts</a>.</p>



<p>Beyond the fines, authorities intended to send a message. Schubarth’s case highlights how U.S. agencies cooperate to shut down smuggling rings and ensure penalties match the seriousness of the crime.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Federal investigators teamed up with Montana’s Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks to track the evidence, coordinate arrests, and charge every participant involved in the illegal commerce.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stark-warning-for-wildlife-traffickers">Stark warning for wildlife traffickers</h2>



<p>For many wildlife advocates, this outcome serves as a reminder that creating hybrids of animals like sheep, or manipulating protected species for financial gain, carries hefty penalties.</p>



<p>Conservation groups caution that unscrupulous breeders often endanger entire ecosystems by introducing diseases and weakening local genetic pools.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Though Schubarth insisted his intentions were business-oriented, officials say entrepreneurs must <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/international-animal-rights-day-2024-honoring-animals-with-justice/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">respect boundaries</a> set by the Lacey Act and other legal frameworks designed to guard both animals and habitats.</p>



<p>In a letter presented at sentencing, Schubarth admitted he let his enthusiasm push him to search for loopholes to craft the “best sheep” for the market.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The court weighed his age and clean record, but <a href="https://www.mtd.uscourts.gov/chief-judge-brian-morris-chambers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Judge Brian Morris</a> made it clear that tampering with nature purely for profit will be addressed with firm legal action.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-any-of-this-matter">Why does any of this matter?</h2>



<p>His story highlights the vital need for careful oversight. Biologists believe that preserving the true character of wild populations is crucial for maintaining healthy herds, balanced ecosystems, and future research opportunities.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Any intrusion that disrupts established conservation measures could produce a cascade of negative effects that may be impossible to reverse.</p>

<p>Birds, much like humans, experience complex relationship dynamics, including divorce. Some species remain loyal to one partner for life, while others change partners after just one breeding season. </p>



<p>A recent study sheds new light on these patterns, revealing the evolutionary forces shaping bird behavior.</p>



<p>This study was led by Frigg Speelman from Macquarie University, in collaboration with scientists from the Netherlands, U.K., and Seychelles.</p>



<p>The findings provide fascinating insights into why birds stay together or opt for divorce.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-advantages-of-switching-partners">Advantages of switching partners</h2>



<p>For many <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hundreds-of-bird-species-face-extinction-risks-in-the-neotropics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bird species</a>, staying with the same partner for a long time often leads to better breeding results. </p>



<p>When partners work together and become familiar with each other's behavior, they can more effectively raise their chicks. This teamwork increases the chances of the chicks surviving and thriving.</p>



<p>However, switching partners, or "divorcing," can sometimes offer advantages. A new partner might be of higher quality, meaning they are healthier, stronger, or better at parenting. </p>



<p>Additionally, a different partner might come with access to a better nesting site, further improving the chances of survival and reproductive success.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-divorce-among-monogamous-birds">Divorce among monogamous birds</h2>



<p>Surprisingly, divorce is very common in socially monogamous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/birds-navigate-using-clues-from-earths-magnetic-field/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bird</a> species. It happens in over 90% of these species. </p>



<p>In some cases, it can lead to better breeding success or even longer lifespans for the birds involved.</p>



<p>Scientists are studying these separations to understand what drives them and how they influence the birds' survival and reproductive strategies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-on-seychelles-warblers">Focus on Seychelles warblers </h2>



<p>The current study drew upon 24 years of data collected on Seychelles warblers (<em>Acrocephalus sechellensis</em>), a small songbird species found on tropical islands.</p>



<p>These <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-extinctions-shatter-the-harmonious-balance-of-nature/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birds</a> are well-suited for research because they rarely migrate, making them easy to monitor throughout their lives. Their average lifespan of 5.5 years allows researchers to gather detailed data on their relationships and breeding habits.</p>



<p>The research revealed that divorce in these warblers is influenced by several factors, including the number of eggs a pair produces, how long they have been together, and the age of the male. </p>



<p>Pairs that produced fewer eggs were more likely to separate in the next breeding season, suggesting that reproductive success plays a key role in relationship stability. </p>



<p>Male age was also significant, with middle-aged males (around 6–7 years old) having the lowest divorce rates. In contrast, younger and older males were more prone to experiencing breakups.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-low-divorce-rates-among-warblers">Low divorce rates among warblers</h2>



<p>Interestingly, divorce was relatively uncommon in this species, occurring in only 14% of partnerships. This is much lower than the 69% of pairings that ended due to the death of one partner (widowhood). </p>



<p>The researchers believe that intense competition for limited breeding spots contributes to the low divorce rates, as finding a new partner or breeding opportunity can be challenging in their environment. </p>



<p>This study highlights how environmental pressures and social dynamics influence the likelihood of divorce in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-birds-are-at-great-risk-from-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bird species</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-consequences-of-bird-divorce">Consequences of bird divorce</h2>



<p>Divorce among birds can sometimes lead to better opportunities, such as finding a higher-quality mate or a better nesting spot. However, it also comes with significant risks. </p>



<p>For females, losing their breeding position after a breakup can be particularly harmful. These females are more likely to face challenges, such as reduced access to resources, which lowers their chances of survival.</p>



<p>The study found that, in the short term, divorced birds did not show any noticeable improvements in fitness, such as increased reproductive success or better survival rates. In the long run, the effects were even more concerning, especially for females who were displaced from their breeding roles. </p>



<p>These females often struggled to regain their standing, leading to negative consequences for their overall survival and reproductive success.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-from-bird-relationships">Lessons from bird relationships</h2>



<p>This research from <a href="https://www.mq.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Macquarie University</a> highlights the complex and intricate nature of bird relationships, revealing that their social lives are far more nuanced than previously believed. </p>



<p>It challenges the assumption that bird partnerships are simple or solely instinct-driven, showing instead that birds adopt various strategies to adapt to their environments.</p>



<p>By studying these dynamics, scientists gain valuable insights into how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-species-extinctions-are-far-more-impactful-than-we-realized/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birds</a> navigate challenges like finding mates, raising offspring, and surviving in the wild. These behaviors shed light on the evolutionary strategies birds use to maximize their success.</p>



<p>Future research will focus on understanding whether bird divorce is a deliberate choice, aimed at improving survival and reproduction, or simply a response to challenging environmental conditions. </p>



<p>Either way, the love lives of birds prove to be more intricate and fascinating than anyone might have imagined.</p>

<p>This flow is what drives the movement of tectonic plates on Earth's surface, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-detect-major-earthquakes-months-in-advance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">causing earthquakes</a>, volcanic eruptions, and the shifting of continents. </p>



<p>Heat from the Earth’s core causes <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-inner-core-rotation-is-slowing-down-making/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">convection currents</a> in the mantle, where hot material rises, cools near the crust, and then sinks back down, creating a continuous cycle. This process plays a key role in shaping the planet's surface.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tectonic-plates-in-earth-s-mantle">Tectonic plates in Earth's mantle</h2>



<p>The discovery stems from the use of a high-resolution method called <a href="https://library.seg.org/doi/10.1190/1.9781560803027.entry6">full-waveform inversion</a>. Scientists use this approach to interpret every type of <a href="https://manoa.hawaii.edu/exploringourfluidearth/physical/ocean-floor/layers-earth/compare-contrast-connect-seismic-waves-and-determining-earth-s-structure#">seismic wave</a> produced by earthquakes, rather than focusing on only one kind.</p>



<p>Because of that, they can build a more precise model of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-crust-is-dripping-under-turkey/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth’s internal structures</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>After applying this method to the lower mantle, researchers saw pockets that appear to be leftover plate fragments in areas with no known history of subduction. </p>



<p>Following their analysis, they were startled by just how common these hidden anomalies seemed to be.</p>



<p>This work was led by a team that includes doctoral student <a href="https://www.geology.ethz.ch/people/person-detail.Mjc3OTM4.TGlzdC82NjksNTE5NzQ3MzU0.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Thomas Schouten</a> from the <a href="https://www.geology.ethz.ch/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Geological Institute of ETH Zurich</a>, who collaborated with experts from the <a href="https://www.caltech.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">California Institute of Technology</a>.</p>



<p>Their combined efforts brought fresh insights that challenge assumptions about where old tectonic plate remnants might reside in Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-interpreting-seismic-signals">Interpreting seismic signals</h2>



<p>To understand how researchers got here, it helps to remember how seismic waves work. When an earthquake strikes, it sends waves radiating outward in all directions.</p>



<p>These waves bounce, bend, and shift as they travel through the planet. In much the same way that doctors use medical imaging techniques, geophysicists measure the time these waves take to reach various seismic stations around the globe.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The velocity of those signals reveals details about rock density and stiffness. In previous years, scientists relied heavily on <a href="https://pubs.geoscienceworld.org/ssa/bssa/article-abstract/108/5A/2894/546740/Generalized-Seismic-Phase-Detection-with-Deep?redirectedFrom=fulltext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">particular seismic phases</a>. </p>



<p>But by examining all available wave data instead, new shapes and densities were identified from Earth's lower <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mantle-heat-shaped-earths-crust-3-billion-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mantle</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-is-earth-s-mantle-important">Why is Earth's mantle important?</h2>



<p>Over hundreds of millions of years, plates have formed, shifted, and sunk back into Earth’s interior. This <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1029/JB073i006p01959">cycling</a> plays a role in controlling phenomena like volcano formation, earthquakes, and the slow drift of continents.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Researchers have long known that slabs of subducted plates cluster under regions where one tectonic plate slides under another. </p>



<p>So it came as a surprise when the new images revealed large slabs below oceans and continental interiors that lack a clear history of plate collisions.</p>



<p>That signals a possible complication in our understanding of how plates evolve and where they end up.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mysterious-plate-under-the-pacific-ocean">Mysterious plate under the Pacific Ocean</h2>



<p>One of the biggest surprises was in a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-sunken-oceans-discovered-between-earth-core-and-mantle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">zone</a> under the western Pacific. According to current plate tectonic timelines, there is no reason for old plate fragments to be there.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Apparently, such zones in the Earth's mantle are much more widespread than previously thought,” said <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-024-77399-2">Schouten</a>.</p>



<p>No geologic data points to historical subduction nearby. This indicates that the anomalies might not be chunks of plates at all, or at least not in the way scientists originally imagined.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-could-it-be-something-else">Could it be something else?</h2>



<p>Scientists now face questions about the origin and nature of these structures.</p>



<p>Some say they may be ancient, silica-rich pockets left over from the early <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-earths-mantle-shapes-surface-topography/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mantle</a>. Others suggest they might be iron-rich accumulations that have drifted over billions of years.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Schouten explained that the new model reveals anomalies throughout the Earth's interior, but the exact materials or plate fragments responsible for these patterns remain unclear. </p>



<p>This uncertainty suggests a more diverse range of compositions in the Earth's mantle than previously understood.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-next-steps-for-deeper-understanding">Next steps for deeper understanding</h2>



<p>Full-waveform inversion is a promising tool for these investigations, but it offers only a view of how fast or slowly waves move through the material. </p>



<p>Researchers say they need further refinement to tease out chemical and thermal differences. </p>



<p>Some are turning to additional datasets, including electromagnetic signals and data from mineral physics experiments. </p>



<p>Combining those methods might highlight whether these mantle “blobs” are from primordial origins, from recycled ocean crust, or from something else entirely.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-plate-tectonics">Implications for plate tectonics</h2>



<p>If scientists confirm that more zones like these exist in Earth’s depths, they may have to adjust many theories about how heat moves through the planet. </p>



<p>Such hidden zones might alter patterns of convection and the formation of mantle plumes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The story of plate tectonics could also see updates, with new chapters on how plate fragments wander and transform in ways not previously documented. These discoveries remind us that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-volcanic-hotspots-are-all-connected-to-earths-interior-mantle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">geoscience</a>, like any science, is never settled.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-search-continues">The search continues</h2>



<p>In the future, improved supercomputers may crunch even larger datasets to produce clearer images of Earth's lower mantle and its plate structures. That could resolve debates about the true nature of these mysterious anomalies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By integrating various approaches - seismic, chemical, and computational - Earth scientists will keep uncovering pieces of our planet’s hidden complexity.</p>



<p>As Schouten’s team demonstrated, sometimes seeing the entire picture means looking beyond what we think we already know.</p>

<p>The coyote, one of North America's most adaptable predators, continues to surprise scientists with its resilience and counterintuitive survival strategies. </p>



<p>Recent findings indicate that coyote populations are flourishing even in regions with active hunting efforts, raising questions about traditional wildlife management practices.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coyotes-thrive-in-hazard-prone-areas">Coyotes thrive in hazard-prone areas</h2>



<p>A recent study reveals that coyote populations thrive in regions with active hunting programs, challenging assumptions about the effectiveness of such interventions in controlling their numbers.</p>



<p>Conducted by a wildlife biologist from the <a href="https://www.utah.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Utah</a> in collaboration with colleagues across the country, the research highlights how coyotes have adapted to human interventions that typically decimate other species.</p>



<p>As U.S. landscapes have been increasingly altered by urbanization and habitat fragmentation over the past two centuries, many species have declined. </p>



<p>Yet coyotes have expanded their range, filling ecological niches left vacant by the loss of larger predators such as bears, wolves, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/national-cougar-day-the-crucial-ecological-role-of-cougars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cougars</a>. </p>



<p>Study co-author Austin Green is a researcher at the University of Utah. "Coyotes are bold generalists, eating anything from seeds, trash, roadkill, rodents, deer fawn, even pets," noted Green. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-study-rooted-in-observation-and-data">A study rooted in observation and data</h2>



<p>The study leveraged data from Snapshot USA, a nationwide initiative using motion-triggered trap cameras to monitor <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-mammals-live-depends-more-on-climate-than-human-activities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mammal</a> populations. </p>



<p>Over a three-year period, researchers deployed nearly 4,600 cameras across 254 transects in the contiguous United States, including six in Utah. </p>



<p>These sites included City Creek and Red Butte canyons near Salt Lake City, as well as areas near St. George.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-comprehensive-picture-of-coyote-distribution">Comprehensive picture of coyote distribution </h2>



<p>Study lead author Remington Moll is an assistant professor at the University of New Hampshire.</p>



<p>“The impressive Snapshot USA project provides a yearly glimpse into our nation’s wildlife thanks to hundreds of researchers and the coordination by the Smithsonian and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences,” said Moll.</p>



<p>Each transect covered 10 to 15 kilometers, with cameras spaced every 500 meters and mounted about 20 inches off the ground. </p>



<p>The researchers analyzed factors such as urban development, biome type, food sources, competing species, and hunting pressure.</p>



<p>Over 3,100 coyote detections were statistically modeled against 22 covariates, providing a comprehensive picture of their distribution and abundance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coyote-abundance-and-hunting-pressure">Coyote abundance and hunting pressure </h2>



<p>One of the study’s most striking findings is the positive association between coyote abundance and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hunting-can-help-stabilize-wildlife-populations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hunting</a> pressure. </p>



<p>At a 100-meter scale, regions with active coyote hunting showed a 97% positive correlation with population growth. This counterintuitive result can be explained by the species’ territorial behavior.</p>



<p>“Because they’re such territorial animals, if you remove the most territorial one, two or three take their place, start breeding, and you lead to actual increases in coyote population,” explained Green.</p>



<p>Unlike other carnivores such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/clash-of-the-top-predators-wolves-are-eating-sea-otters/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wolves</a> and cougars, which have been eradicated from much of their historical range due to hunting, coyotes appear to benefit from the same pressures. </p>



<p>Loose regulations - including lack of seasonal restrictions, bag limits, or licensing requirements - may contribute to this phenomenon.</p>



<p>In Utah, a state program even pays $50 for every set of coyote ears submitted, resulting in thousands of animals being killed annually.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-wildlife-management">Implications for wildlife management</h2>



<p>The study’s findings challenge traditional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/loss-of-wildlife-happens-five-times-slower-in-protected-lands/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildlife</a> management strategies. </p>



<p>While hunting has historically reduced populations of other species, it seems to have the opposite effect on coyotes, making it an ineffective tool for controlling their numbers.</p>



<p>Furthermore, the adaptability of coyotes - their ability to exploit diverse food sources and colonize new territories - ensures that their populations rebound even in areas where they have been eradicated.</p>



<p>This paradox highlights the need for innovative approaches to coexistence and population management that account for the unique resilience of this species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-north-america-s-most-adaptable-predator">North America’s most adaptable predator</h2>



<p>As researchers continue to analyze data from Snapshot USA, which has compiled photographic wildlife records for seven years, new insights into coyote behavior and broader wildlife trends are likely to emerge. </p>



<p>These findings not only enhance our understanding of North America’s most adaptable predator but also highlight the complexity of managing wildlife in an era of rapid environmental change. </p>



<p>Such knowledge could inform future conservation strategies, ensuring a balanced coexistence between humans and wildlife in shared environments.</p>

The upcoming U.S.-India NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) mission is about to take us a step closer to understanding this ceaseless change and the intricate mechanisms behind it.</p>



<p>This remarkable satellite mission, set to launch in a few months, will track dynamic changes in Earth’s surface, from wetlands to ice sheets and disaster-hit infrastructure.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nisar-revolutionizing-earth-observation">NISAR: Revolutionizing Earth observation</h2>



<p>NISAR is a remarkable advancement in Earth observation, thanks to its unique dual-band radar system. This system combines two types of radar: the L-band, with a 25-centimeter wavelength, and the S-band, with a 10-centimeter wavelength. </p>



<p>The L-band can penetrate through vegetation and observe larger features such as tree trunks, boulders, or the ground beneath forest canopies. In contrast, the S-band, with its shorter wavelength, is more sensitive to smaller surface-level features like leaves and fine textures.</p>



<p>The complementary nature of these two radar signals enables scientists to study a wide range of Earth’s features with greater precision. </p>



<p>The L-band provides insights into broader and deeper structures, while the S-band focuses on finer surface details. Together, they offer a comprehensive view of Earth’s surface changes, capturing data on an unprecedented scale and frequency. </p>



<p>“The planet’s surfaces never stop changing - in some ways small and subtle, and in other ways monumental and sudden,” said Paul Rosen, NISAR <a href="https://nisar.jpl.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Project</a> Scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (<a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JPL</a>).</p>



<p>“With NISAR, we’ll measure that change roughly every week, with each pixel capturing an area about half the size of a tennis court.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-nisar-can-do">What NISAR can do</h2>



<p>The NISAR satellite is designed to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/take-a-glimpse-at-our-planets-new-ai-satellite-phsat2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">observe</a> nearly all of Earth’s land and ice surfaces with exceptional precision. This means it can monitor changes across vast areas of the planet, including natural features like glaciers and forests. </p>



<p>The satellite will track how glaciers move and whether they are melting or growing. It will also <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/parker-solar-probe-will-fly-through-suns-atmosphere-tomorrow-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">monitor</a> forests to measure growth or loss, helping us understand how much carbon they absorb or release. Additionally, it will observe wetlands to track changes in these vital ecosystems.</p>



<p>Beyond natural processes, NISAR will focus on major events like earthquakes, landslides, and volcanic eruptions. By detecting how the ground shifts during these events, it can provide critical information for disaster response teams. </p>



<p>For instance, it can help assess damage and guide recovery efforts. This data will also contribute to a better understanding of the global carbon cycle - how carbon moves through the atmosphere, land, and oceans - which is essential for studying climate change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-legacy-of-an-early-radar-satellite">Legacy of an early radar satellite </h2>



<p>NISAR is built on decades of radar technology advancements. Rosen noted that the concept of using spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) began in the 1970s with NASA’s Seasat mission. </p>



<p>Seasat was an early radar satellite. It was the first Earth-orbiting satellite designed for remote sensing of the ocean. While Seasat operated for just a few months, it revolutionized how scientists study Earth.</p>



<p>The satellite inspired later missions that refined radar imaging and laid the groundwork for today’s sophisticated systems, like NISAR. </p>



<p>This legacy demonstrates how earlier missions influenced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sentinel-2c-satellite-delivers-first-breathtaking-images-of-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">modern Earth observation</a> and continue to inspire scientists to innovate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-nisar-mission">Significance of the NISAR mission</h2>



<p>The NISAR mission will generate massive datasets to benefit scientists and decision-makers alike. Whether monitoring soil moisture or studying cryospheric processes, the data will be freely accessible via cloud storage.</p>



<p>“Our data products will fit the needs of users across the mission’s science focus areas,” noted Rosen.</p>



<p>The NISAR mission highlights the power of international collaboration. NASA and <a href="https://www.isro.gov.in" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ISRO</a> began working together in 2014 to combine their strengths and expertise. </p>



<p>Each agency contributed unique radar systems - NASA's L-band radar and ISRO's S-band radar - and together, they created a unified satellite mission to observe Earth.</p>



<p>This partnership wasn’t without challenges. With a 9,000-mile (14,500-kilometer) distance between them and operations across several time zones, coordination was complex. </p>



<p>Teams on different continents built <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/parker-solar-probe-completes-closest-ever-approach-to-the-sun/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">parts of the satellite</a>, which were later brought together in India for final assembly. Despite the logistical hurdles, the collaboration succeeded, demonstrating the commitment and innovation of both agencies.</p>

<p>The analysis revealed that protecting bats noticeably contributes to a vast majority of the targets outlined in the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).</p>



<p>"Bats are integral parts of socioenvironmental systems, and their conservation offers a powerful opportunity to strengthen global efforts to meet the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and United Nations Sustainable Development targets by 2030," said Dr. Luz De Wit, BCI’s Director of One Health.</p>



<p>Dr. De Wit also emphasized the broad benefits of bat conservation such as bolstering <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-biodiversity-crisis-is-actually-worse-than-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biodiversity</a> and human well-being, supporting sustainable agriculture and capacity development, advancing ecosystem restoration, and even propelling technological innovation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stronger-societies-healthier-economies">Stronger societies, healthier economies</h2>



<p>The experts presented several practical examples of the positive outcomes of bat preservation efforts. <p>An international team of scientists led by Dr. Wenxia Zhang analyzed these events as part of a study published in the journal <em>Advances in Atmospheric Sciences</em>.</p>

<p>Yet, the story of these formidable hunters continues to evolve as new insights reveal the "optimal function" of their extreme teeth - remarkably efficient tools for sinking into their prey with precision and power.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-limited-adaptability-of-saber-toothed-predators">Limited adaptability of saber-toothed predators </h2>



<p>But if these fangs were so perfect, why did saber-toothed predators vanish? Ironically, their greatest strength may have also led to their downfall.</p>



<p>Saber-tooth <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/smilodon-fatalis-young-saber-toothed-cats-had-double-fangs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fangs</a> acted like an "evolutionary ratchet," ensuring the hunting prowess of animals but limiting their adaptability. When ecosystems shifted and prey grew scarcer, their reliance on these specialized adaptations left them increasingly vulnerable to extinction.</p>



<p>It may come as a surprise that saber-toothed predators evolved multiple times across different <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/therapsids-worlds-oldest-ancestor-of-mammals-discovered-so-far-had-saber-teeth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mammal</a> groups. This fascinating discovery emerged from a study led by researchers from the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a> and Monash University.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-evolution-of-extreme-adaptations">The evolution of extreme adaptations</h2>



<p>The team set out to analyze whether the saber-tooth shape was the ideal mix for two competing demands. The teeth needed to be sharp and slender enough to penetrate prey efficiently, while being blunt and robust enough to resist breakage.</p>



<p>To investigate, the scientists used a combination of 3D-printed steel tooth replicas, advanced computer simulations, and biting experiments. They studied 95 different carnivorous mammal teeth, including 25 sabre-toothed species.</p>



<p>“Our study helps us better understand how extreme adaptations evolve - not just in saber-toothed predators but across nature," explained Dr. Tahlia Pollock, a member of the Palaeobiology Research Group in Bristol’s School of Earth Sciences and lead author of the study.</p>

<p>However, the researchers found that these adaptations were not one-size-fits-all. Each group tailored its tooth shape to its unique ecological niche, creating a spectrum of hunting strategies rather than a rigid dichotomy of "dirk-toothed" and "scimitar-toothed" predators.</p>



<p>By combining 3D-printed replicas and biomechanical simulations, scientists identified how subtle variations in tooth design impacted both hunting efficiency and durability. </p>



<p>For example, the elongated, curved fangs of some species were ideal for deep punctures, while straighter, sturdier teeth could withstand the strain of subduing larger prey.</p>

<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>

<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>

<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>Your cerebellum acts like a prediction machine, recent findings show. When you move your own hand to touch yourself, your brain generates precise predictions about what you will feel and then cancels out the tickling sensation through neural inhibition.</p>

<p>"Your brain is essentially learning to override its own reflexes," Kilteni explained in her review of tickling research.</p>

<p>Tickling-induced laughter is actually one of the first forms of communication between infants and caregivers. "Tickle involves a neurological self/nonself discrimination, providing the most primitive social scenario," Provine noted in his research.</p>

<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
