<p>In a lab in Genoa, Italy, volunteers teamed up with iCub, a child-sized humanoid robot, to slice a bar of soap using a steel wire. The task itself was simple. What surprised researchers was what happened afterward: the participants’ brains began treating iCub’s hand as if it were their own.</p>



<p>The study was led by experts at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (<a href="https://www.iit.it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IIT</a>) and <a href="https://www.brown.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brown University</a>. The results suggests that collaboration with a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-attached-mushroom-mycelium-to-biohybrid-robot-body-amazing-results/">robot</a> does more than complete a task. It changes how our brains map the space around us.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-maps-with-robots">Brain maps with robots</h2>



<p>Our brains keep a constantly updating map of the body that helps us move without thinking about each step.</p>



<p>Swinging a tennis racket or reaching for a glass of water feels natural because the brain treats the racket or the glass as part of the body for that moment. This map is flexible. It expands and reshapes when new tools or objects prove useful.</p>



<p>The team wanted to know if a humanoid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brainless-soft-robot-created-that-runs-and-swims-is-powered-solely-by-air/">robot</a> could fit into that same map. Could our brain adopt a robot hand the way it adopts a familiar tool? That was the puzzle.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-s-detection-of-robot-hands">Brain's detection of robot hands</h2>



<p>The experiment built on what scientists call the near hand effect. When a hand is near an object, the brain pays more attention to it. It prepares to act. </p>



<p>Earlier studies showed that this effect can even extend to another person’s hand, but only after working together. The researchers asked if the same could happen with a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/robots-are-using-game-theory-keep-humans-safe/">robot</a>.</p>



<p>Giulia Scorza Azzarà, a PhD student at IIT and first author of the study, designed the test. Volunteers and iCub cut soap together using a steel wire. Afterward, they did the Posner cueing task, a reaction-time test where images flash on a screen.</p>



<p>The results were striking. People responded faster when images appeared near iCub’s hand. Their brains had started to treat the robot’s hand almost like their own.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-actively-collaborating-with-a-robot-hand">Actively collaborating with a robot hand</h2>



<p>This effect didn’t happen automatically. A control study showed that when the robot’s hand was simply placed near the screen, without any shared task, there was no change in attention. </p>



<p>Unlike a rubber fake hand, which can trick the brain through sight alone, a robot’s hand needed active collaboration to matter. </p>



<p>Attention is prioritized to the space near another’s hand (human or robot) only after the latter becomes relevant to accomplish a shared goal.</p>



<p>The way iCub moved changed how people responded. When the robot’s movements were wide, fluid, and well synchronized, the effect grew stronger. </p>



<p>Distance also mattered. If the robot’s hand came close to a person’s personal space, the brain was more likely to accept it into its map. Engagement and closeness turned out to be powerful ingredients.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-sees-robots">How the brain sees robots</h2>



<p>The study also measured how people felt about their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aquatic-robot-inspired-by-flatworms-can-swim-in-harmony-with-nature/">robotic</a> partner. Questionnaires revealed that the more competent, likable, or animated iCub seemed, the stronger the effect became. </p>



<p>When participants thought of the robot as capable of feeling or acting intelligently, their brains gave more weight to its presence. The more human-like and competent the robot is perceived to be, the more impact its hand has after collaboration on human attentional prioritization.</p>



<p>What forms here is something called a joint body schema. During teamwork, our brains do not just map our own limbs. They also start to include a partner’s movements. </p>



<p>Athletes, dancers, and musicians rely on this unconscious merging all the time. The new study shows that robots can be part of it too.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions </h2>



<p>The researchers note that iCub’s behavior in the study was pre-programmed. It could not adapt in real time the way humans do. </p>



<p>Future robots will need to adjust their actions more flexibly, responding to the pace and style of their human partners. Adaptability could make the connection feel even more natural.</p>



<p>Future tests may also explore whether the same effect happens with non-humanoid objects, like a stick or another simple tool. That would show whether human-like design is essential, or whether collaboration itself is enough to reshape attention.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-power-of-working-with-robots">The power of working with robots</h2>



<p>The applications are clear. Robots that people can accept as extensions of themselves could transform rehabilitation and assistive care. </p>



<p>Patients recovering from injury may work with robots that help restore movement by literally feeling like part of their bodies. Virtual reality systems could integrate robotic partners that guide attention and enhance immersion.</p>



<p>This project is part of the ERC-funded wHiSPER initiative, coordinated by IIT’s CONTACT unit. It reveals a powerful idea: working with robots can change how we see ourselves. </p>



<p>Slicing soap may seem trivial, but the shift it triggered shows just how ready our brains are to make space for new partners - even mechanical ones.</p>

<p>Imagine strolling along the same path where our ancestors once walked, then accidentally discovering human footprints that had been left behind roughly 115,000 years ago. </p>



<p>This is precisely what happened to a group of archaeologists when they found the oldest-known human footprints on the Arabian Peninsula.</p>



<p>Discovered among the tracks of prehistoric animals, these imprints mark a significant discovery in the study of human migration and life before the Ice Age.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-human-footprints-on-the-arabian-peninsula">Early human footprints on the Arabian Peninsula </h2>



<p>In 2017, the fossilized <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earliest-human-footprints-ever-found-are-believed-to-be-300000-years-old/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tracks</a> were spotted in a special lakebed region of northern Saudi Arabia. The tracks consisted of seven discrete footprints.</p>



<p>"Here, we report hominin and non-hominin mammal footprints and fossils from the Alathar lacustrine deposit in the western Nefud Desert, Saudi Arabia," noted the researchers.</p>



<p>"We argue that the footprints, dated to the last interglacial and therefore contemporaneous with an early&nbsp;<em>H. sapiens</em>&nbsp;out-of-Africa dispersal, most likely represent the earliest evidence of our species in the Arabian Peninsula."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-out-of-africa-theory-the-basics">Understanding the "out-of-Africa" theory -- the basics</h2>



<p>The connection between early humans, Africa, and Arabia is rooted in the migration patterns that shaped human history. Most scientists believe that modern humans, <em>Homo sapiens</em>, first evolved in Africa about 200,000 years ago. </p>



<p>From there, they began to spread out across the globe. Arabia played a key role as a "gateway" for these early humans. </p>



<p>Situated between Africa and Asia, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/turquoise-lagoons-on-the-coast-of-saudi-arabia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arabian Peninsula</a> acted as a land bridge, allowing humans to migrate from Africa into other parts of the world. </p>



<p>Over time, Arabia's varied landscapes, from deserts to coastal areas, offered resources that helped early humans survive and settle in the region.</p>



<p>As early humans moved through Arabia, they didn’t just pass through; they made it their home. Evidence shows that humans adapted to the harsh desert environment, developed tools, and built communities. </p>



<p>However, as we discuss here, theories about the exact timeline of <em>H. sapiens</em> arrival in Arabia continue to change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-footprints-in-similar-states">Human footprints in similar states</h2>



<p>The lakebed, named "the trace" in Arabic, seems to have been a busy spot over 100,000 years ago. The scientists noted that the footprints - which were found in similar states of preservation - were likely generated within a very short time frame. </p>



<p>"An experimental study of modern human footprints in mud flats found that fine details were lost within two days and prints were rendered unrecognizable within four, and similar observations have been made for other non-hominin mammal tracks," explained the researchers.</p>



<p>Mud, it seems, is nature's perfect canvas to capture history, even though the impressions may be lost rather rapidly from the soft surface. </p>



<p>During the Burgess Shale event, for example, organisms were preserved intact because they were caught in a mudslide.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-tracks-of-our-ancestors">The tracks of our ancestors</h2>



<p>As complex as the past is, several theories have been proposed about the upright primates of that era. Mounting evidence indicates that the tracks were left by members of our own species, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/prehistoric-homo-sapiens-stone-tools-preserved-volcanic-ash-grotta-di-castelcivita/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Homo sapiens</em></a>.</p>



<p>"Seven hominin footprints were confidently identified and, given the fossil and archaeological evidence for the spread of <em>H. sapiens</em> into the Levant and Arabia during the era 130,000 to 80,000 years ago, and absence of <em>Homo neanderthalensis</em> from the Levant at that time, we argue that <em>H. sapiens</em> was responsible for the tracks at Alathar," stated the researchers. </p>



<p>Furthermore, the experts noted that the sizes of the Alathar footprints are more consistent with those of early <em><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neanderthals-homo-sapiens-living-spaces-organized-similarly/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">H. sapiens</a></em> than <em><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/isolation-played-a-key-role-in-neanderthal-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">H. neanderthalensis</a></em>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brief-visits-to-the-lake">Brief visits to the lake</h2>



<p>The scientists did not find marks from tools or knives on the animal bones that were uncovered in the area. In other words, there was no evidence of hunting. </p>



<p>Does this mean the humans just dropped by for a drink?</p>

<p>"The lack of archaeological evidence suggests that the Alathar Lake was only briefly visited by people," the researchers noted. The visit, it seemed, was primarily "tied to the need for potable water."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-last-steps-before-the-ice-age">Last steps before the Ice age</h2>



<p>The fossilized footprints raise the obvious question of who made them, but they also spark another intriguing question: why weren't the tracks covered by those of another group?</p>



<p>One theory is that they may have been the last ones who migrated through a temperate climate before being obliterated by the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/disastrous-climate-changes-of-the-last-ice-age-could-happen-again/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ice Age</a>. Their silent footsteps, captured in the mud, are a reminder of a history we may never fully understand.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-footprints-of-ancient-humans-and-animals">Footprints of ancient humans and animals</h2>



<p>The footprints discovered at Alathar Lake not only reveal the presence of early humans but also offer a snapshot of the ecosystem that existed 115,000 years ago. </p>



<p>Surrounding the human footprints, scientists identified tracks from animals such as elephants, camels, and antelopes. The research paints a vivid picture of a lush environment that was vastly different from the arid desert seen today.</p>



<p>These prehistoric creatures likely gathered around the lake to drink water, much like the humans whose tracks were immortalized in the mud.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dynamic-environment-with-shared-resources">Dynamic environment with shared resources </h2>



<p>By analyzing the spatial arrangement and depth of the footprints, researchers can infer details about the behavior and interactions of both humans and animals during this period. </p>



<p>For instance, the proximity of human and animal tracks suggests a dynamic environment where resources like water attracted a variety of species, enabling brief yet crucial encounters. </p>



<p>These findings help scientists piece together not just human history but also the broader ecological tapestry of the region before the harsh climatic shifts of the Ice Age began to arrive.</p>

115,000-year-old human footprints found in a location where they should not be

<p>Imagine the vast expanse of the United States Corn Belt, where fields of corn stretch endlessly toward the horizon, shaping not only the landscape but also the region's weather patterns.</p>



<p>A recent study reveals an intriguing perception: our farming practices and the environment are in an intricate dance, manifesting subtle changes in the weather.</p>



<p>The study paints a vivid picture of "precipitation recycling." This term describes a climate phenomenon where the moisture released from plants, soil, and other geographical features returns to earth as rainfall in a self-sustaining feedback loop.</p>



<p>Due to farming practices and the natural influence of shallow groundwater, precipitation recycling has increased by nearly 30% in the Corn Belt. The feedback loop boosts rainfall during the crucial growing season.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-in-the-eye-of-the-storm-the-u-s-corn-belt">In the eye of the storm: The U.S. Corn Belt</h2>



<p>The Corn Belt, stretching across 12 midwestern and Great Plains states from Ohio to Nebraska, was once a tapestry of tallgrass prairie and woodlands. Today, it is a quilt of croplands extensively maintained through <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/satellites-can-now-show-us-how-much-water-we-use-for-irrigation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">irrigation</a> systems.</p>



<p>The effects of the rainfall recycling are fascinating: as corn matures during the summer months, recycling peaks. The phenomenon is also heightened during drier years when moisture from other regions is scarce.</p>



<p>"This research shows how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/developing-climate-smart-agricultural-practices/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">agricultural practices</a> can modify regional climate, with implications for food and water security," noted study lead author Zhe Zhang. </p>



<p>"In an agricultural region like the U.S. Corn Belt where rainfall is critical, it’s important for both farmers and water resource managers to understand where the rain comes from."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-factors-influencing-weather-in-the-corn-belt">Factors influencing weather in the Corn Belt </h2>



<p>The process of squeezing out these results involved some serious computer modeling power. </p>



<p>The researchers used the NSF NCAR-based Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, which simulates the atmosphere down to a high resolution of about 2.5 miles.</p>



<p>The experts also used the Noah-MP computer model, also based at NSF NCAR, which allows for an in-depth analysis of the system of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/electronic-soil-boosts-crop-growth-by-over-50/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crop growth</a>.</p>



<p>By comparing simulations that included crops, irrigation, and groundwater with those that lacked one or more of these factors, the scientists pinpointed the contributions of each factor to precipitation recycling.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rainfall-patterns-and-agricultural-productivity">Rainfall patterns and agricultural productivity </h2>



<p>The revelations of this study could help improve <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/snowflake-patterns-can-help-predict-rainfall/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rainfall predictions</a> for the Corn Belt and provide useful insights for water resource allocations and planting strategies.</p>



<p>Understanding the source of rainfall is not only crucial for managing agriculture but also for understanding freshwater availability. </p>



<p>Now, the team plans to examine how these changing precipitation patterns may impact agricultural productivity.</p>



<p>As we continue to cultivate our landscapes, it seems we're not just shaping the earth beneath our feet but also the skies above.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-costs-of-rainfall-recycling">Hidden costs of rainfall recycling</h2>



<p>While precipitation recycling may seem like a boon for agriculture, it’s not without its challenges. The increased reliance on local water sources through recycling can put additional pressure on shallow groundwater reserves.</p>



<p>As <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/millions-of-people-in-the-u-s-rely-on-contaminated-groundwater/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">groundwater</a> plays a key role in maintaining this self-sustaining feedback loop, overextraction for irrigation could disrupt the delicate balance. </p>



<p>Furthermore, heavy reliance on precipitation recycling might make the region more vulnerable to prolonged droughts if external moisture sources diminish.</p>



<p>These findings suggest that a comprehensive understanding of water cycles is necessary for improving agricultural output and also for preventing potential resource depletion.</p>



<p>Future strategies will need to weigh these trade-offs to ensure long-term sustainability.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forecasting-weather-in-the-corn-belt">Forecasting weather in the Corn Belt</h2>



<p>The findings from the U.S. Corn Belt also hold valuable insights for other agricultural regions around the globe. </p>



<p>Similar precipitation recycling processes may be occurring in other heavily irrigated areas, such as India’s Punjab region or China’s North China Plain. </p>



<p>Understanding these localized climate interactions could provide a global framework for managing water resources in a warming climate.</p>



<p>Additionally, precipitation recycling highlights the complex relationship between human activity and regional weather patterns.</p>



<p>These insights could lead to advancements in precision agriculture, helping farmers fine-tune their practices to optimize water use and productivity while minimizing environmental impact.</p>



<p>As the study highlights, the interplay between agriculture and climate is far more nuanced than previously understood. </p>



<p>By learning from these patterns, we not only ensure the sustainability of the Corn Belt but also gain tools to navigate global agricultural challenges.</p>

<p>In a stunning new discovery, a team of researchers from the Universities of Oxford and Birmingham have unearthed a massive expanse of quarry floor filled with hundreds of different dinosaur footprints, creating a variety of enormous trackways.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These footprints, located at Dewars Farm Quarry in Oxfordshire, date back to the Middle Jurassic Period, approximately 166 million years ago.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to the scientists, these trackways form part of a huge “dinosaur highway” and include footprints from the nine-meter predator Megalosaurus, as well as from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/isle-of-wight-fossils-suggest-that-europe-had-unique-plant-eating-dinosaurs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">herbivorous dinosaurs</a> that were up to twice that size.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-dinosaur-highway-the-basics">Understanding the dinosaur highway - the basics</h2>



<p>"The Dinosaur Highway" refers to a stretch of coastline in the southeast of England, particularly around the Isle of Wight and the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. This area is famous for its rich fossil deposits, where dinosaur tracks and fossils have been discovered. </p>



<p>The Isle of Wight, often called the "Dinosaur Island," is especially known for having some of the best-preserved dinosaur footprints in the world. </p>



<p>Scientists have found evidence of many different species that lived millions of years ago, from plant-eating herbivores to massive carnivorous predators.</p>



<p>The Jurassic Coast, a <a href="https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNESCO World Heritage site</a>, stretches across Dorset and East Devon and is another key part of this "Dinosaur Highway." </p>



<p>This coastline is not just home to dinosaur fossils but also offers a stunning view of Earth's geological history, with layers of rock dating back to the Mesozoic era.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extensive-trackways-on-the-dinosaur-highway">Extensive trackways on the dinosaur highway</h2>



<p>The excavation uncovered five main trackways, with indications of additional footprints in the surrounding area. One trackway spans over 150 meters. </p>



<p>Four of the trackways were traced to gigantic, long-necked sauropods, likely Cetiosaurus, reaching up to 18 meters in length. </p>



<p>The fifth belonged to a carnivorous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-theropod-dinosaurs-thrived-in-polar-environments/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">theropod</a> dinosaur, Megalosaurus, recognized by its large, three-toed footprints. </p>



<p>In one section, sauropod footprints and Megalosaurus tracks intersect, hinting at the possibility of these dinosaurs encountering each other in this prehistoric setting.</p>



<p>“Scientists have known about and been studying Megalosaurus for longer than any other dinosaur on Earth, and yet these recent discoveries prove there is still new evidence of these animals out there, waiting to be found,” said Emma Nicholls, a vertebrate paleontologist at the <a href="https://www.oumnh.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oxford University Museum of Natural History</a> (OUMNH).</p>

<p>The footprints lay hidden under mud until quarry worker Gary Johnson noticed “unusual bumps” while clearing clay to expose the quarry floor. At that point, experts were brought in to investigate the site more closely.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Supported by Quarry Manager Mark Stanway and his staff, a large research team from the Universities of <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oxford</a> and <a href="https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Birmingham</a> spent a week in June 2024 carefully revealing around 200 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/matching-dinosaur-footprints-on-different-continents-trace-their-global-travels-gondwana/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">footprints</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They used aerial drone photography to build highly detailed 3D models, ensuring the footprints are documented for future scientific research.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-link-to-previous-finds">A link to previous finds</h2>



<p>These new trackways connect with discoveries made in the same area in 1997. Past limestone quarrying had then revealed over 40 sets of footprints, some stretching 180 meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The earlier finds provided crucial insight into the types of dinosaurs that roamed the United Kingdom during the Middle Jurassic and helped establish the location as a “Site of Special Scientific Interest.”</p>



<p>Nevertheless, technology at that time did not allow for extensive digital or drone-based documentation. Modern techniques permit much more thorough recording of footprints, yielding a deeper understanding of dinosaur biology and behavior.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-window-into-ancient-environments">A window into ancient environments</h2>



<p>“These footprints offer an extraordinary window into the lives of dinosaurs, revealing details about their movements, interactions, and the tropical environment they inhabited,” said Kirsty Edgar, a micropaleontologist at the University of Birmingham.&nbsp;</p>



<p>More than 20,000 images were taken of the prints, forming a valuable resource for further study. Scientists hope this archive will help them reconstruct details about how dinosaurs moved, their potential speeds, and whether and how they may have interacted.</p>



<p>Beyond footprints, the site’s rich geological context can offer insight into its ancient environment, a muddy lagoon where these creatures walked millennia ago.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The preservation is so detailed that we can see how the mud was deformed as the dinosaur’s feet squelched in and out. Along with other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossils-capture-a-turning-point-in-the-evolution-of-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossils</a> like burrows, shells and plants, we can bring to life the muddy lagoon environment the dinosaurs walked through,” said Duncan Murdock, an Earth scientist at OUMNH.</p>

<p>The discovery will also appear in the upcoming “Breaking Ground” exhibition at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, illustrating major turning points in our knowledge of Earth’s and life’s history.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Public health experts have long warned that <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/salmonella/symptoms-causes/syc-20355329" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Salmonella</a> can lurk in poultry products, but fresh research suggests the problem may be bigger than previously recognized. </p>



<p>Evidence collected from a layered poultry chain in <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Liaoning" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Liaoning Province, China</a>, has highlighted contamination at different points of production.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Concerns about antibiotic resistance are also surfacing, which raises questions about how to contain these bacteria before they reach consumers. </p>



<p>The implications point to a need for tighter measures and more knowledge about how best to keep poultry safe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-salmonella-and-poultry-products">Salmonella and poultry products</h2>



<p>In the newly published investigation, researchers took 1,207 samples from various points along a commercial egg production line. </p>



<p>They discovered that 130, or 10.8%, tested <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-salmonella-outsmarts-our-gut-defenses/">positive for Salmonella</a>, most of which belonged to two specific varieties that are linked with known infection clusters. </p>



<p>Health officials are paying attention to these findings because they illustrate how one bacterium can establish itself in multiple settings, from breeding flocks to final processing facilities. </p>



<p>This level of contamination raises the pressure to identify quick strategies to reduce the spread.</p>

<p>The study concluded that Salmonella contamination in the layered poultry production chain is more extensive than earlier assessments suggested. </p>



<p>Researchers emphasized that the genetic similarity of strains across various production stages highlights the critical need for preventive measures starting at the breeding phase.</p>

<p>Local outbreaks may attract attention, yet health agencies worldwide recognize Salmonella as a pressing concern.</p>



<p>Across the Atlantic, the European Food Safety Authority (<a href="https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/topics/topic/salmonella" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EFSA</a>) warns that Salmonella “remains one of the most frequently reported causes of foodborne outbreaks in the European Union.” </p>



<p>Meanwhile, the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (<a href="https://www.fsis.usda.gov/food-safety/safe-food-handling-and-preparation/poultry" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FSIS</a>) refers to the presence of Salmonella on raw poultry products “a serious concern.” </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breeding-stage-vulnerabilities">Breeding stage vulnerabilities</h2>



<p>An important takeaway from this research is the vulnerability that emerges during the early phases of poultry breeding. Bacteria introduced at that point can persist through egg laying, processing, and distribution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Once Salmonella establishes a foothold, it may linger on surfaces, equipment, or even inside birds. This possibility highlights the need for systems that scrutinize every step, not just the end product. </p>



<p>By identifying weak spots early on, producers can take steps to reduce the odds of a larger outbreak down the line.</p>

<p>Bats, often overshadowed by birds in discussions of long-distance migration, are now starting to be recognized for their remarkable travel feats.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A new study by scientists at the <a href="https://www.ab.mpg.de/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior</a> (MPI-AB) has provided unprecedented insights into the migration strategies of common noctule <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bats-can-ramp-up-their-heart-rate-to-900-beats-per-minute/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bats</a>. </p>



<p>Using advanced tracking technology, the researchers discovered that these small mammals exploit storm fronts to maximize their energy efficiency during migration.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-high-tech-window-into-bat-behavior">High-tech window into bat behavior</h2>



<p>“The sensor data are amazing!” said Edward Hurme, a postdoctoral researcher at MPI-AB and the Cluster of Excellence Collective Behavior at the <a href="https://www.uni-konstanz.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Konstanz</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We don’t just see the path that bats took, we also see what they experienced in the environment as they migrated. It’s this context that gives us insight into the crucial decisions that bats made during their costly and dangerous journeys.”</p>



<p>The team employed lightweight, intelligent tracking devices developed by MPI-AB engineers. These tags, which weighed just five percent of the bats’ body mass, recorded extensive data, including activity levels and air temperature, throughout the migration.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The data were transmitted via a long-range network that provided coverage across Europe.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The tags communicate with us from wherever the bats are because they have coverage across Europe much like a cell phone network,” explained Timm Wild, who led the development of the ICARUS-TinyFoxBatt tag at MPI-AB.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unique-and-variable-bat-migration-path">Unique and variable bat migration path</h2>



<p>The study focused on 71 common noctule bats during their spring migration, covering up to four weeks. Unlike the predictable corridors often seen in bird migrations, the noctule bats took varied routes, though all moved in a general northeast direction.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“There is no migration corridor,” said Dina Dechmann, a senior author from MPI-AB. “We had assumed that bats were following a unified path, but we now see they are moving all over the landscape in a general northeast direction.”</p>



<p>The research also revealed that noctules can travel nearly 400 kilometers in a single night, a record for the species. However, their migration differs significantly from that of birds.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Unlike <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-migratory-birds-navigate-with-such-accuracy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">migratory birds</a>, bats don’t gain weight in preparation for migration,” Dechmann noted. “They need to refuel every night, so their migration has a hopping pattern rather than a straight shot.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-timing-migration-with-weather">Timing migration with weather</h2>



<p>On some nights, the researchers observed a dramatic increase in departures, which Hurme likened to “bat fireworks.” This led the team to investigate the environmental triggers for these events.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They discovered that bats tended to leave when air pressure dropped and temperatures rose - conditions associated with approaching storms.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“They were riding storm fronts, using the support of warm tailwinds,” Hurme explained. The tags also showed that bats expended less energy on these nights, confirming that they harness wind support to power their flights.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It was known that birds use wind support during migration, and now we see that bats do too,” he added.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-conservation">Implications for conservation</h2>



<p>These findings have significant implications for bat conservation, particularly in mitigating the risks posed by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wind-turbines-are-displacing-bats-from-their-forest-habitats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wind turbines</a>, a leading cause of bat mortality. “Before this study, we didn’t know what triggered bats to start migrating,” said Hurme.&nbsp;</p>



<p>He expressed optimism that further research could lead to systems capable of forecasting bat migration. Such systems could help wind farms adjust operations to reduce collisions. </p>



<p>“We can be stewards of bats, helping wind farms to turn off their turbines on nights when bats are streaming through. This is just a small glimpse of what we will find if we all keep working to open that black box.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-research-is-needed">Further research is needed</h2>



<p>Despite these breakthroughs, much remains unknown about the full migration cycle of noctule <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/migratory-bats-use-earths-magnetic-field-as-a-compass/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bats</a>, which spans approximately 1,600 kilometers annually. The study’s novel tracking technology marks an important step in uncovering the complexities of their behavior. </p>



<p>“We are still far from observing the complete yearly cycle of long-distance bat migration,” Hurme acknowledged. “The behavior is still a black box, but at least we have a tool that has shed some light.”</p>



<p>By continuing to explore these mysteries, researchers hope to deepen their understanding of bat migration, paving the way for effective conservation strategies and contributing to a broader understanding of animal migration.</p>

<p>Researchers from the University of Cambridge analyzed blood samples from 42,000 adults aged 40-69, collected through the <a href="https://www.ukbiobank.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.K. Biobank</a>. Their study revealed a critical insight: loneliness increases the production of five specific proteins.</p>

<p>Icy bodies like Europa and Enceladus have drawn attention as places that might offer answers to the age-old question of whether life exists beyond Earth. </p>



<p>Beneath their thick ice layers, vast oceans may hold conditions that allow microorganisms to survive, just as certain organisms thrive in Earth’s extreme ocean habitats. </p>



<p>Scientists are eager to explore these hidden frontiers, and several space agencies, including <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a> and German Aerospace Center (<a href="https://www.dlr.de/de" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DLR</a>), have shown strong interest in missions that involve advanced underwater craft designed for these cold environments.</p>



<p>The submersible craft, known as Extraterrestrial Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (Exo-AUVs), could travel through the ice, analyze the ocean below, and help researchers learn <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/life-could-survive-near-surface-europa-enceladus-moons/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">whether life may be lurking</a> in these deep waters.</p>



<p>Mission planners must decide where to look, which technologies to use, and how to meet core objectives for any future life detection effort.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-exo-auv-technology">Significance of Exo-AUV technology</h2>



<p>Exo-AUVs have the ability to collect and analyze samples while cruising through <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-evidence-jupiter-moon-europa-deep-ocean-shifting-icy-shell/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice-covered seas</a>. They can operate in challenging conditions that include high pressures, low temperatures, and limited light. </p>



<p>Studies emphasize that these vehicles should carry an array of tools, including instruments for acoustics, vision, spectroscopy, and biological tests. </p>



<p>Each Exo-AUV would scan large areas, identify spots with a higher chance of hosting microorganisms, and gather physical and chemical data before sending updates back to Earth.</p>



<p>Researchers see these machines as important because they can perform “multi-object, multi-scale and multi-dimensional detection autonomously and efficiently.” </p>



<p>In other words, they are built to roam underwater for long periods, cover wide swaths of territory, and carry out detailed analyses. </p>



<p>Agencies are excited about the chance to apply these methods on icy satellites, where getting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/europa-clipper-will-search-for-signs-of-life-on-jupiters-icy-moon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">answers about life</a> may finally be possible in the coming decades.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-searching-for-biological-potential">Searching for "biological potential"</h2>



<p>A key mission goal for Europa or Enceladus involves searching for strong evidence of possible biological processes, rather than expecting an immediate yes-or-no answer. </p>



<p>By focusing on “biological potential,” mission planners can concentrate on scanning for biosignatures and perhaps even extant microorganisms. </p>



<p>The ice shell, the boundary where ice meets liquid water, and the seafloor all feature conditions that might support life.</p>



<p>Thick ice can limit sunlight, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deep-sea-hydrothermal-vents-provide-clues-about-the-origin-of-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hydrothermal vents</a> on the ocean floor could still provide essential energy sources. In settings like these, even fragile clues might indicate living systems. </p>



<p>Researchers stress that identifying the right areas to investigate, coupled with the best equipment, is essential for spotting subtle signals that standard methods may miss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exo-auvs-need-cutting-edge-tech">Exo-AUVs need cutting-edge tech</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/europa-clipper-is-on-a-1-8-billion-mile-journey-to-jupiters-moon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Europa’s icy crust</a> can reach around several miles thick, which poses a major obstacle for any vehicle hoping to access the underlying water. </p>



<p>A carrier craft must melt or cut through this thick shell, enter the ocean, and release smaller underwater units into the sea. </p>



<p>Plans call for using power sources like Radioisotope Thermal Generators (<a href="https://science.nasa.gov/planetary-science/programs/radioisotope-power-systems/power-radioisotope-thermoelectric-generators/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RTGs</a>) or Small Modular Reactors, which can generate both the heat and energy needed for drilling or melting through ice.</p>



<p>The intense radiation near Jupiter adds another hurdle. Protective materials are vital to keep the systems safe. Meanwhile, the limited payload capacity of launch vehicles demands careful design to keep spacecraft components small and light. </p>



<p>Scientists are turning to microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) to miniaturize the instruments, shrinking everything from cameras to chemical sensors without losing performance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-the-plan">What's the plan?</h2>



<p>A proposed roadmap sets out the path for designing Exo-AUVs that can tackle these tasks with more autonomy than any rover or lander developed for planetary science so far. </p>



<p>Mission outlines call for vehicles that start by exploring larger areas, then switch to closer observations in smaller zones to collect <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/life-sparking-energy-source-found-on-saturns-moon-enceladus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">clues about life</a>. </p>



<p>Researchers suggest that the roadmap should address crucial factors such as ice-penetrating methods, hull design, payload selection, and onboard autonomy for science tasks.</p>



<p>By following this plan, developers hope to avoid repeating mistakes from past missions that offered limited biological searches. </p>



<p>Each step aims to refine the design, allowing the Exo-AUV to move smoothly and monitor everything from local chemistry to possible cell structures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-multiple-exo-auv-system-to-tackle-europa">Multiple Exo-AUV system to tackle Europa</h2>



<p>A Concept of Operations for Multiple Exo-AUV System (<a href="https://www.researchgate.net/figure/A-concept-of-operations-for-Exo-AUV-system-ConOps-for-MESA_fig3_384574932" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ConOps for MEAS</a>) has been introduced to tackle Europa’s varied environments. </p>



<p>The idea involves a carrier vehicle, called an ice-penetrating Exo-AUV Carrier (EAC), and two smaller Exo-AUVs with different specializations. </p>



<p>One is a Survey Module-equipped craft (EAS) designed to cover large areas and spot major objects on the seafloor or near the ice-water boundary. The other is an Observation Module-equipped unit (EAO) that can focus on tiny targets in localized spots.</p>



<p>This multi-vehicle setup also plans for in-water connection and disconnection, data sharing, and recharging - reducing wasted space and energy.</p>



<p>The EAC would stay under the ice as a home base for navigation and communication, while the two smaller craft carry out more targeted tasks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-using-exo-auvs-to-find-alien-life">Using Exo-AUVs to find alien life</h2>



<p>To sum it all up, experts suggest that the approach of combining precise instruments, robust power sources, and autonomy could finally provide strong insights into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extraterrestrial-life-moons-planets-detected-single-grain-ice-floating/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">whether life exists</a> on Europa or other icy bodies. </p>



<p>If any findings from an exo-AUV mission hint at active biology, more craft could follow to expand coverage and confirm the results.</p>



<p>The vision is to conduct thorough investigations that adapt as fresh data arrives, reducing human interference caused by long communication delays of around 30 minutes each way. </p>



<p>By using multiple vehicles and flexible scientific methods, researchers hope to unlock the secrets hidden under miles of ice.</p>

<p>Scientists are paying close attention to changes in SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind COVID-19. A newly released study from Ecuador, featured in the <a href="https://cisalud-ucmh.sld.cu/index.php/Cisalud2024/index/pages/view/ctisalud" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Simposio de Ciencia y Tecnología</em></a>, highlights how swiftly new viral forms can appear.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Infections worldwide have often shown that when the virus' genetic code changes, existing vaccines might lose some of their strength. That puts pressure on health officials to refine their strategies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sars-cov-2-variants">SARS-CoV-2 variants</h2>



<p>Over 3,000 viral sequences from Ecuador were examined, and the findings revealed all five strands: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Omicron. Each strain brought its own modifications, including certain changes tied to immune escape.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study team suggests that when these variants rise, old prevention efforts might not be enough. <a href="https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0233-6168" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Carlos Chiluisa Guacho</a> from the Regional Autonomous University of the Andes in Ambato, Ecuador, coordinated the work and points to the urgency in sharpening genomic tracking efforts across the country.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolving-threats-and-public-health">Evolving threats and public health</h2>



<p>Specialists in disease control are aware that viral mutations keep officials on their toes. Variants in Ecuador showed a pattern similar to shifts observed in other parts of the globe, adding weight to calls for more rigorous checks on viral gene patterns.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The Traveler-based Genomic Surveillance program is a model of <a href="https://www.who.int/health-topics/coronavirus#tab=tab_1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pathogen detection</a> that can be used as an early warning system for the detection of many pathogens beyond SARS-CoV-2,” stated the CDC in an official <a href="https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/travel-genomic-surveillance" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">statement</a>. </p>



<p>That statement echoes the main takeaway from the Ecuador study, which warns that it is never wise to underestimate the virus’s ability to adjust.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vaccines-and-sars-cov-2-boosters">Vaccines and SARS-CoV-2 boosters</h2>



<p>Shots designed to prevent severe illness have saved many lives. Yet concerns remain that the virus keeps finding ways around them. </p>

Such efforts can stop <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cause-of-fatigue-in-long-covid-patients-has-finally-been-revealed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fresh variants</a> from catching everyone by surprise. </p>



<p>Though much of the public may have relaxed after mass vaccination, researchers continue to remind policymakers that data tracking is a long game.</p>

<p>Dr. Carlos Chiluisa Guacho, who helped guide this research, emphasized that readiness is key. He emphasized that although vaccination programs have undoubtedly saved lives, maintaining vigilance is crucial.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Enhancing genomic surveillance will enable earlier detection of dangerous mutations and help adapt public health strategies to prevent widespread outbreaks. </p>



<p>By continuing to refine scientific approaches, countries can hope to reduce the toll of future COVID-19 surges and keep as many people healthy as possible.</p>

<p>Using the extraordinary capabilities of NASA’s Webb Telescope and the natural phenomenon of gravitational lensing, astronomers have achieved an unprecedented feat: observing individual stars in a galaxy called Dragon Arc that is 6.5 billion light-years away.</p>



<p>This breakthrough offers a unique opportunity to study the evolution of galaxies, the nature of dark matter, and the life cycle of distant stars.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-dragon-arc">The Dragon Arc</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dragon-Arc.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The galaxy</a>, known as the Dragon Arc, was observed along the line of sight to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/titanic-galaxy-cluster-collision-defies-all-current-understanding-of-the-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxy cluster</a> Abell 370, which acts as a cosmic magnifying glass. </p>



<p>The cluster’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-galaxy-jwst-er1g-dark-matter-einstein-ring-mystery-solved/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gravitational field stretches</a> and amplifies the light from the Dragon Arc, transforming its spiral structure into an elongated arc.</p>



<p>This macrolensing effect enabled astronomers to resolve individual stars in the distant galaxy for the first time.</p>

<p>“Inside the galaxy cluster, there are many stars floating around that are not bound by any galaxy,” explained co-author Eiichi Egami, a research professor at the <a href="https://astro.arizona.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Arizona's Steward Observatory</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“When one of them happens to pass in front of the background star in the distant galaxy along the line of sight with Earth, it acts as a microlens, in addition to the macrolensing effect of the galaxy cluster as a whole.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-44-individual-stars-identified">44 individual stars identified</h2>



<p>The study, led by Yoshinobu Fudamoto of <a href="https://www.chiba-u.ac.jp/e/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chiba University</a> in Japan, identified 44 individual stars in the Dragon Arc, the largest number ever detected in such a distant galaxy. </p>



<p>These findings represent a significant leap in the study of distant galaxies, where stars typically appear as a blended glow due to the immense distance.</p>



<p>“To us, galaxies that are very far away usually look like a diffuse, fuzzy blob,” said Fudamoto. “But actually, those blobs consist of many, many individual stars. We just can't resolve them with our telescopes.”</p>



<p>Thanks to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/expansion-rate-of-the-universe-confirmed-by-jwst/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JWST</a>’s incredible sensitivity and the combined effects of macro- and microlensing, the team was able to track brightness variations in these stars over time. </p>



<p>These changes occurred because the relative motion of stars in the galaxy cluster altered the alignment and magnification of the distant stars.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-distant-stars-of-the-dragon-arc-nbsp">Distant stars of the Dragon Arc&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The stars observed within the Dragon Arc were predominantly red supergiants - massive stars nearing the end of their lives, similar to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/betelgeuse-one-of-our-brightest-stars-will-vanish-from-sight-next-week/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Betelgeuse</a> in the Orion constellation. </p>



<p>This contrasts with earlier discoveries that primarily identified blue supergiants, thanks to JWST’s ability to detect cooler stars through its infrared capabilities.</p>

<p>“This groundbreaking discovery demonstrates, for the first time, that studying large numbers of individual stars in a distant galaxy is possible,” said Fengwu Sun, a co-author and postdoctoral scholar at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard &amp; Smithsonian (<a href="https://www.cfa.harvard.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CfA</a>). </p>



<p>The ability to identify and study different stellar types provides valuable insights into star formation and the chemical composition of distant galaxies.</p>

<p>The Dragon Arc is just the beginning. Future observations using JWST are expected to uncover even more stars in distant galaxies, enabling detailed studies of their life cycles and interactions. </p>



<p>These efforts could yield hundreds of individual stellar profiles, expanding our understanding of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massive-galactic-explosion-provides-clues-about-galaxy-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxy evolution</a> over billions of years.</p>



<p>“By observing the same galaxy multiple times, we can spot stars in distant galaxies because they appear to pop in and out of existence,” Fudamoto explained.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This technique, combined with the natural magnification effects of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/webb-telescope-finds-a-second-lensed-supernova-in-a-distant-galaxy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gravitational lensing</a>, could revolutionize our approach to studying the cosmos.</p>

<p>In a fast-paced, digitized world, excessive screen time among children is a rising concern - but it seems nature has something to say about it. </p>



<p>A study from the University of Michigan indicates that the secret to pulling children away from screens might be as simple as offering them access to green spaces.</p>



<p>The study emphasizes that community programs aiming to reduce screen time work more effectively when children have access to local green spaces such as parks, forests, and lawns.</p>



<p>"Neighborhood green spaces may draw children out of the house and give them an alternative space to engage in activities other than screen time," explained study lead author Ian-Marshall Lang from U-M's School of Kinesiology.</p>

<p>Despite the efforts of community programs and policies aimed at curbing screen time, many of these initiatives face challenges in effectiveness - particularly in neighborhoods lacking supportive environments like accessible green spaces.</p>



<p>This imbalance highlights the importance of addressing the root causes of excessive screen time, including environmental factors, to ensure all children can benefit from healthier, more balanced lifestyles.</p>

<p>The study revealed that not all neighborhoods have equal access to green spaces. The researchers found that areas with higher Black and Hispanic populations often have fewer parks, open spaces, or natural areas.</p>

<p>"National research shows racial and ethnic inequities in green space availability. These unfair differences in green space access might explain why community programs and policies are less effective in reducing screen time among different racial groups," said Lang.</p>



<p>The findings emphasize the importance of creating equitable, supportive environments. Merely increasing program intensity won't solve the issue without addressing environmental barriers.</p>

<p>These remarkable sensors are found in the bodies of tiny phytoplankton, and enable them to adapt and thrive in dynamic aquatic environments.</p>



<p>Phytoplankton are the backbone of marine food chains. They play a critical role in regulating our planet's climate by absorbing atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> and producing half of the world's oxygen through photosynthesis.</p>



<p>Despite their immense importance, the mechanisms behind the distribution and behavior of phytoplankton remain a scientific mystery that sparks ongoing curiosity and research.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diatoms-with-built-in-light-detection">Diatoms with built-in light detection </h2>



<p>In a joint effort, scientists from <a href="https://www.cnrs.fr/fr" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CNRS</a> and <a href="https://www.sorbonne-universite.fr/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sorbonne University</a> set out to investigate the movements of these microscopic organisms in the water column. The focus was primarily on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tiny-plankton-play-a-big-role-in-the-global-carbon-cycle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diatoms</a>, a major group of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-heatwaves-have-complex-effects-on-phytoplankton-food-web/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">phytoplankton</a>.</p>



<p>Through rigorous research, the experts discovered that diatoms have a built-in light detection system, comprising sensors that are encoded directly into their genomes. </p>



<p>The light-sensitive pigments, known as phytochromes, are essentially microscopic "eyes" that allow diatoms to perceive changes in the light spectrum present at different depths of water. This provides the diatoms with data about their vertical position in the water column.</p>



<p>Knowing whether you are shallow or deep in the water becomes incredibly useful, especially in turbulent water bodies like the high latitude, temperate, and polar regions that witness intense <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atlantic-and-arctic-mixing-is-crucial-for-earths-climate-stability/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water mixing</a>.</p>



<p>By interpreting the information relayed by phytochromes, diatoms adjust their photosynthetic activity, and thus, survive and thrive.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tiny-timekeepers-of-the-aquatic-world">Tiny timekeepers of the aquatic world</h2>



<p>The researchers took their study a step further by scrutinizing environmental genomic data gathered from marine sampling expeditions. They observed an intriguing pattern: phytochromes were solely present in diatoms from zones outside the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.</p>



<p>These regions are marked by notable differences in day length, highlighting a strong sense of seasonality.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>What we call "tickling" is two completely different phenomena, according to the latest research. Light tickling – that feathery sensation that makes you want to scratch – is essentially your body's sophisticated bug detection system. <p>Deep tickling – the kind that makes you laugh uncontrollably – involves complex brain circuits and is fundamentally social. You literally cannot tickle yourself with this type of stimulation.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
