<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>

<p>A comprehensive study offers a deep dive into the complexities surrounding the local impacts of wind turbines, particularly focusing on how their visibility can influence property values in communities across the United States.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research was conducted by an international team of scientists from the <a href="https://www.cmcc.it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CMCC Foundation</a>, the <a href="https://www.pik-potsdam.de/en/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research</a> (PIK), and the <a href="https://www.berkeley.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California at Berkeley</a>, </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-debates-on-renewable-energy-growth">Debates on renewable energy growth</h2>



<p>The investigation is critical for understanding the nuanced trade-offs between renewable energy's environmental benefits and its local effects, potentially reshaping discussions around renewable energy development.</p>



<p>“This situation is a classic 'Not In My Backyard' problem, which leads to extensive policy debates on renewable energy growth,” said lead author Wei Guo, a researcher at CMCC and the <a href="https://www.eiee.org/">European Institute on Economics and the Environment</a> (EIEE).&nbsp;</p>



<p>“In the big picture, the economic solution is about finding a balance between the global environmental benefits of renewable energy and the local impacts on communities nearby.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-wind-turbines-on-local-communities-nbsp">Impact of wind turbines on local communities&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The research takes an innovative step by focusing on the often-overlooked aspect of wind turbines' impact on local communities, specifically how their presence in the landscape can affect the valuation of nearby homes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By constructing a comprehensive database detailing the visibility of wind turbines - including their location, height, and the surrounding topography - the study leverages hedonic valuation theory to statistically estimate the effects of wind turbine visibility on home values, utilizing an extensive dataset covering the majority of U.S. home sales since 1997.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-depreciation-of-property-values">Depreciation of property values</h2>



<p>The findings reveal a discernible negative impact on property values within an 8 km radius of visible wind turbines, an effect that diminishes with increased distance and over time post-installation. In addition, the researchers found that seeing a windmill closer than two kilometers can lower a house’s value by up to 8 percent.</p>



<p>“To picture this, imagine holding a golf ball at arm's length - that is roughly how big a wind turbine looks from that distance,” Guo explained. </p>



<p>“However, as one moves further from the windmill, its impact on house values drops off quickly. From 8 kilometers away, a wind turbine looks about as big as an aspirin tablet at arm’s length, and at this distance, it doesn't really affect what people think their homes are worth.”</p>



<p>The experts calculated a total depreciation of US $24.5 billion in property values for U.S. homes with views of wind turbines, a figure that, while substantial, represents only a minor fraction of the over $45 trillion total value of all homes in the U.S. in 2022.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-renewable-energy-affects-local-communities">How renewable energy affects local communities</h2>



<p>According to Guo, “although houses close to wind turbines can lose some value due to the disrupted view, the impacts are just a small part in the grand theme of all houses, and we expect it to become even less of an issue in the future."</p>



<p>"This project stands at the cutting edge of understanding how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/renewable-energy-must-be-doubled-by-2030/">renewable energy</a> affects local communities. It is like putting on a new pair of glasses to look at how wind power impacts people's lives and homes.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nationwide-evaluation-of-wind-power">Nationwide evaluation of wind power</h2>



<p>This groundbreaking study not only provides a nationwide evaluation of wind power generation's external costs but also introduces methodological innovations by considering the actual visibility of turbines from residences, a significant step forward in the field of environmental economics and policy research.</p>



<p>“Personally, living in northern California for the past five years, I have seen firsthand how local people can be hesitant or opposed to new wind turbines projects. This sparked my interest in this field of research," said Guo.</p>



<p>"For me, this project is more than just an academic study. It's about addressing a real-world issue that I've observed, and using my expertise to shed light on a topic that affects many people's lives.”</p>

<p>Kombucha, the tangy, fizzy fermented <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-tea-delays-biological-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tea</a>, has exploded in popularity thanks to its supposed health benefits. Researchers at <a href="https://www.ship.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Shippensburg University</a> are uncovering ways to fine-tune the process of brewing kombucha tea. </p>



<p>"Brewers typically see making kombucha as an art more than a science," says Jeb Kegerreis, a physical chemist and one of the team's principal investigators. </p>



<p>"So, when we are doing a consultation, we also walk the brewer through the biochemistry of what's happening during fermentation.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-scoby-in-kombucha-brewing">What's SCOBY in kombucha brewing?</h2>



<p>SCOBY, an essential fermentation factor, stands for "Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast." This lively community of microbes is the magic behind kombucha. </p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/a-beginners-guide-to-the-wild-world-of-wild-yeast/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">yeast</a> gobbles up sugar, producing alcohol and carbon dioxide (that's where the fizz comes from). Then, the bacteria step in, converting most of that alcohol and other sugars into flavorful acids. </p>



<p>It's a beautiful partnership, but since SCOBYs are living things, each batch can turn out a bit differently. This variability is where the Shippensburg University team comes in to help both home brewers and commercial producers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-silicone-bags-for-kombucha-brewing">Silicone bags for kombucha brewing</h2>



<p>Shippensburg University's research reveals that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brewing-non-alcoholic-beer-that-tastes-just-like-regular-beer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brewing</a> kombucha in silicone bags yields some surprising benefits:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kombucha-brewing-speed">Kombucha brewing speed</h3>



<p>Brewing time gets slashed from two weeks to one! Why? Silicone is more porous than glass, allowing more oxygen in, and that fuels the bacteria to work faster.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-less-booze">Less booze</h3>



<p>The extra oxygen helps the bacteria break down alcohol more efficiently, which is great news if you want a low-alcohol kombucha.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tangy-twist">Tangy twist</h3>



<p>Silicone brews seem to have more gluconic acid, which provides a tart flavor without the vinegary punch of acetic acid (another common acid in kombucha).</p>



<p>"We think this acid will become more popular with brewers,” says Kegerreis. “Gluconic acid provides acidity without the sour vinegar taste you get from acetic acid, and that may appeal to more tastebuds.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-different-sugars-in-kombucha-brewing">Different sugars in kombucha brewing</h2>



<p>Typically, kombucha is made with plain sucrose (table sugar). But the Shippensburg team wanted to see how starting with different types of sugar would impact the fermentation process.</p>



<p>"During the fermentation process, yeast in the SCOBY breaks sucrose into glucose and fructose. By using just glucose or just fructose, we looked at how removing that first step affects the whole brewing process,” explains chemistry student Abbi Czarnecki. </p>



<p>Here's what the researchers found:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glucose">Glucose</h3>



<p>Using pure glucose as the SCOBY's food gave a kombucha with loads of gluconic acid and very little alcohol.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fructose">Fructose</h3>



<p>Fructose-fed kombucha had higher acetic acid levels (that vinegar tang) and more alcohol. It also tended to be sweeter.</p>



<p>“If minimizing ethanol production is the measure of our success, fructose failed in that department. Out of all three sugars, it produced the most ethanol,” Ian Loscher, another chemistry student on the team adds.</p>

<p>In the realm of science, sometimes the smallest creatures can provide the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nature-inspires-solutions-for-a-sustainable-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biggest insights</a>. Such is the case with leafhoppers, unassuming backyard insects that carry a secret armor of brochosomes.</p>



<p>Researchers at <a href="https://www.psu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Penn State</a> have delved into this miniature world, uncovering the mysteries of particles known as brochosomes, which these insects secrete and coat themselves with. </p>



<p>Their findings, led by Professor Tak-Sing Wong of mechanical and biomedical engineering, have been published in the prestigious <em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</em> of the United States of America (PNAS), marking a significant step forward in bioinspired optical materials.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decoding-the-biology-of-leafhoppers-brochosomes">Decoding the biology of leafhoppers' brochosomes</h2>



<p>Brochosomes are intricate, soccer ball-like structures with a series of cavities, baffling scientists since their discovery in the 1950s. The Penn State team, however, has not only replicated the complex geometry of these particles for the first time but also shed light on their unique ability to absorb both visible and ultraviolet light. </p>



<p>This breakthrough promises to spawn numerous applications, from creating invisible <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/thermal-cloak-keeps-electric-vehicles-cool-in-the-summer-warm-in-winter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cloaking devices</a> to developing coatings for more efficient solar energy harvesting.</p>



<p>The journey to this discovery began in 2017 when Wong and his team first synthesized a basic version of brochosomes, aiming to understand their function. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-synthetic-brochosomes-created-in-biomimicry-breakthrough">Synthetic brochosomes created in biomimicry breakthrough</h2>



<p>Fast forward to today, and the researchers have achieved a remarkable feat: creating synthetic brochosomes with precise geometry using advanced 3D printing technology. </p>



<p>This not only mimics the natural structure of brochosomes but also demonstrates their potential to significantly reduce light reflection.</p>



<p>“It has been unclear why the leafhoppers produce particles with such complex structures,” Wang said, “We managed to make these brochosomes using a high-tech 3D-printing method in the lab. We found that these lab-made particles can reduce light reflection by up to 94%. This is a big discovery because it's the first time we've seen nature do something like this, where it controls light in such a specific way using hollow particles.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-invisibility-cloaks-to-solar-harvesting">From invisibility cloaks to solar harvesting</h2>



<p>The implications of this research are vast. For instance, Lin Wang, a postdoctoral scholar in mechanical engineering and the study's lead author, envisions the development of a thermal invisibility cloak, drawing inspiration from the leafhopper's natural defenses. </p>



<p>This could revolutionize how we manage light reflection, potentially hiding the thermal signatures of humans or machines from detection.</p>



<p>“This discovery could be very useful for technological innovation. With a new strategy to regulate light reflection on a surface, we might be able to hide the thermal signatures of humans or machines," Wang explained. </p>



<p>"Perhaps someday people could develop a thermal invisibility cloak based on the tricks used by leafhoppers. Our work shows how understanding nature can help us develop modern technologies," he said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolutionary-purpose-of-leafhoppers-brochosomes">Evolutionary purpose of leafhoppers' brochosomes</h2>



<p>The intrigue surrounding brochosomes extends beyond their optical properties. The uniform size of these particles across different leafhopper species suggests a specific, evolutionary purpose, possibly linked to predator evasion. </p>



<p>By scattering visible light and absorbing ultraviolet light, brochosomes serve as an anti-reflective shield, offering the leafhoppers a form of natural invisibility against predators with UV vision, such as birds and reptiles.</p>



<p>Looking ahead, the team at Penn State plans to refine the fabrication process of synthetic brochosomes, bringing them closer to the size of their natural counterparts. This could enable a plethora of human applications. </p>



<p>Some ideas include more efficient solar panels, protective pharmaceutical coatings, advanced sunscreens, and even information encryption technologies that leverage brochosome-like structures to hide data visible only under specific light wavelengths.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biggest-innovations-from-the-smallest-creatures">Biggest innovations from the smallest creatures</h2>



<p>“Nature has been a good teacher for scientists to develop novel advanced materials,” Wang said. “In this study, we have just focused on one insect species, but there are many more amazing insects out there that are waiting for material scientists to study, and they may be able to help us solve various engineering problems. They are not just bugs; they are inspirations.”</p>



<p>In summary, the research into leafhoppers and their brochosomes by the Penn State team unveils the intricate secrets of nature and heralds a new era of technological innovation inspired by the minutiae of the natural world. </p>

<p>In a cosmic neighborhood, a team has uncovered a "warm Jupiter" planet. <p>A team led by Luis Thomas of the <a href="https://www.usm.uni-muenchen.de/index_en.php" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University Observatory Munich</a> has described a new exoplanet (a planet outside of our solar system) orbiting a star within the ancient star cluster Messier 67. This gas giant, designated S1429 b, belongs to a class known as warm Jupiters. </p>

<p>Messier 67, nicknamed the King Cobra Cluster, is a grand old dame among star clusters. Estimated to be over 4 billion years old, it's one of the most ancient and well-studied open clusters in our galaxy. </p>



<p>This incredible age makes it a fascinating window into how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alien-weather-exoplanet-wasp-121-b-has-a-dynamic-atmosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stars</a> evolve and how star clusters change over vast stretches of time. Interestingly, the cluster is about the same age as our Sun. </p>



<p>This offers scientists a chance to study a stellar environment that might resemble our own solar system in its youth. Astronomers wonder, could planets – even those potentially capable of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-telescopes-can-directly-detect-signs-of-alien-life-in-exoplanet-atmospheres/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">supporting life</a> – exist in a place like M67? That possibility makes it a prime target for hunting exoplanets.</p>



<p>The team's "Search for Giant Planets in M67" survey is dedicated to answering those questions. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hot-and-warm-jupiter">Hot and Warm Jupiter</h2>



<p>Hot Jupiters are gas giants, like the Jupiter in our solar system, but they orbit incredibly close to their stars. This makes them scorching hot – way hotter than any <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exoplanet-12-light-years-away-may-have-a-magnetic-field/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planet</a> in our solar system. </p>



<p>Warm Jupiters, like S1429 b, are a bit less extreme. They're still gas giants, but they orbit their stars farther away than hot Jupiters. </p>



<p>This means they're warm, but not blazing hot. They also have longer orbits than hot Jupiters, putting them somewhere in between the super-close hot worlds and planets further out, like Jupiter in our solar system. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-s1429-b">S1429 b</h2>



<p>"Between December 2019 and March 2022, we continued the observations of 11 stars in M67 with the Habitable Planet Finder spectrograph (HPF). We included six stars that showed potential long-term RV variations and five stars at the turn-off point of M67 which had no previously published data," explained the researchers.</p>



<p>The team's efforts paid off. Warm Jupiter S1429 b is about twice as massive as Jupiter. It completes an orbit around its host star every 77.48 days, at a relatively close distance. </p>



<p>This proximity results in a warm equilibrium temperature of about 683 Kelvin. “This is the sixth planet discovered in Messier 67… they are distributed over different evolutionary stages,” noted the researchers.</p>

<p>“COVID-19 mobility restrictions gave researchers a truly unique opportunity to study how animals responded when the number of people sharing their landscape changed drastically over a relatively short period,” said Burton.</p>

<p>“And contrary to the popular narratives that emerged around that time, we did not see an overall pattern of ‘wildlife running free’ while humans sheltered in place," said Burton. <p>In Canada, carnivores such as wolverines, wolves, and cougars were found to be less active with increased human presence, while large herbivores in certain parks and urban areas like Edmonton showed heightened activity, albeit with a shift towards nocturnality. Large <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carnivores-healthy-ecosystem/">carnivores</a> were notably absent from heavily human-dominated landscapes.</p>

<p>“In remote areas with limited human infrastructure, the effects of our actual presence on wildlife may be particularly strong," said study co-author Kaitlyn Gaynor, a biologist at UBC.</p>



<p>To give wild animals the space they need, we may consider setting aside protected areas or movement corridors free of human activity, or consider seasonal restrictions, like temporary closures of campsites or hiking trails during migratory or breeding seasons." </p>

<p>In a breakthrough development, scientists are on the brink of creating a pill that could simulate the health benefits traditionally obtained from exercise. This novel approach is aimed at combating muscle deterioration and various medical ailments, including <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-diet-may-save-your-life-six-key-foods-lower-the-risk-of-heart-disease/">heart disease</a> and neurodegenerative disorders.</p>



<p>The research will be presented by experts from the <a href="https://wustl.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Washington University in St. Louis</a> (WUSTL) during the <a href="https://www.acs.org/meetings/acs-meetings/spring.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society (ACS) Spring 2024</a> meeting. This hybrid event, featuring nearly 12,000 scientific presentations, is held both virtually and in-person from March 17-21.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-irreplaceable-value-of-physical-activity-nbsp">Irreplaceable value of physical activity&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Lead researcher Bahaa Elgendy, a professor of anesthesiology at WUSTL, emphasized the irreplaceable value of physical activity but acknowledged the necessity for alternatives in certain situations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We cannot replace exercise; exercise is important on all levels. If I can exercise, I should go ahead and get the physical activity. But there are so many cases in which a substitute is needed [for example in older people of those suffering from various diseases.]”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-metabolic-shifts-seen-after-physical-activity">Metabolic shifts seen after physical activity </h2>



<p>The team's discovery centers on compounds that initiate the metabolic shifts seen after physical exertion, specifically targeting estrogen-related receptors (ERRs) which are pivotal in muscle cell metabolism, growth, and performance enhancement.&nbsp;</p>



<p>After a decade of research, they have developed a promising compound, SLU-PP-332, which activates all three forms of ERR, including ERRα, a key regulator of exercise-induced stress adaptation in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-discover-molecule-that-helps-grow-stronger-and-bigger-muscles/">muscle</a>. Initial experiments with mice demonstrated that this compound not only increased fatigue-resistant muscle fibers but also significantly boosted endurance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-improved-simulation-of-exercise-effects-nbsp">Improved simulation of exercise effects&nbsp;</h2>



<p>To create SLU-PP-332, the scientists meticulously analyzed the structure of ERRs and their activation mechanism. Building on this foundation, they have engineered new molecules that forge stronger bonds with these receptors, potentially offering enhanced effects compared to SLU-PP-332, alongside improved stability and reduced toxicity risk.</p>



<p>The effectiveness of SLU-PP-332 and its successors was measured by examining RNA levels, reflecting gene expression, in rat heart muscle cells. The results indicated a more pronounced simulation of exercise effects with the new compounds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-targeting-estrogen-related-receptors">Targeting estrogen-related receptors</h2>



<p>Preliminary research with SLU-PP-332 shows promise in treating obesity, heart failure, and age-related kidney function decline by targeting ERRs.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Additionally, ERR activity might mitigate brain damage associated with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/magnetic-particles-in-air-pollution-may-lead-to-alzheimers-disease/">Alzheimer’s</a> and other neurodegenerative diseases. Although SLU-PP-332 does not cross into the brain, several new compounds have been designed with this capability in mind.</p>

<p>Elgendy expressed optimism about the potential of activating ERRs to produce a range of health benefits. The research team, in collaboration with <a href="https://pelagospharma.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pelagos Pharmaceuticals</a> - a startup they co-founded - is planning to further test these compounds in animal models and explore their application in treating neurodegenerative disorders. </p>

<p>How do animals survive when the mercury drops far below what we can withstand? For some, the answer lies in an extraordinary feature – hollow hairs that provide remarkable insulation. These tiny structures, invisible to the naked eye, hold the key to endure the relentless onslaught of winter.</p>



<p>While most scientists understand the basics of hollow hairs, major research has centered on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/experts-have-solved-the-mystery-of-fur-patterns-in-cats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">domesticated</a> animals. The mysteries of hollow hair in wild animals, especially their seasonal transformations, remain an intriguing frontier. </p>



<p>A team at <a href="https://utahtech.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Utah Tech University</a> is changing that, and their research sheds new light on how wild animals survive the challenges of winter.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scanning-electron-microscope">Scanning electron microscope</h2>



<p>Led by Professor <a href="https://chemistry.utahtech.edu/wendy-schatzberg/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wendy Schatzberg</a> and  Professor Samuel Tobler, the team used a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to delve into the unseen world of animal hair. The project was led by undergraduate student Taylor Millett, driven by her love of the outdoors.</p>



<p>Millet meticulously examined hairs from three iconic big game animals: pronghorn antelope, mule deer, and Rocky Mountain elk. Under the SEM's intense gaze, she discovered an intricate system resembling a messy honeycomb – a network of tiny air pockets. </p>



<p>The most striking revelation was that the honeycomb structure <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/animals-have-a-biological-switch-that-prepares-them-for-seasonal-changes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">changes</a> dramatically between summer and winter.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seasonal-transformations-of-animal-hair">Seasonal transformations of animal hair</h2>



<p>Summer hair exhibits a denser core with smaller air pockets. But when the chill descends, the structure transforms: all three species display winter hair with significantly larger air pockets. </p>



<p>To illustrate this, the average diameter of winter air pockets in mule deer measured 26 micrometers, which is double the size of their summer counterparts at 13 micrometers.</p>



<p>"This is very intriguing, because those pockets create an insulative barrier that keeps the animals warm in winter,” said Millett.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-power-of-insulation">The power of insulation</h2>



<p>“With some animals, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-unravel-the-secrets-of-polar-bear-fur/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coat</a> looks different in summer and winter,” explained Millett. “But in the animals we’re studying, we’ve found that it's not just the outer coloring of the hair that's changing. The inner microscopic details are also changing to allow these animals to continue surviving in their environment.”</p>



<p>The animal kingdom adapts by modifying the very structure of their hair to harness the insulating power of air. Why air, you might wonder? </p>



<p>Air is a notoriously poor conductor of heat. This property makes it an excellent insulator, a fact well known to anyone who has donned a down jacket on a cold day. </p>



<p>The principle at work is simple: trap air, and you trap heat. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-aquatic-mammals-keep-their-fur-clean-underwater/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Animals</a> with the ability to change their hair structure exploit this principle to its fullest, creating a natural, built-in barrier against the cold.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biomimicry-of-animal-hair-houses-and-camping">Biomimicry of animal hair: Houses and camping</h2>



<p>The discovery's impact stretches far beyond the realm of pure science. Engineers and designers can develop innovative synthetic materials inspired by these adaptations. "One potential application is synthetic insulation for houses and camping gear," said Millett. </p>



<p>Imagine home insulation that's both more effective and significantly lighter than current options. Instead of relying on bulky, environmentally-taxing materials, we could mimic the air-trapping structure of hollow hair to achieve superior insulation. </p>



<p>Furthermore, improved camping gear that offers excellent thermal protection would transform outdoor adventures. This biomimetic approach could make exploring nature more accessible and comfortable, even during colder seasons.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-directions">Future directions</h2>



<p>Fueled by their findings, the team aims to expand its research horizons. They plan to collaborate with zoos around the world to investigate whether their discovery extends to other animals and how factors like geographic location and climate affect hollow hair.</p>



<p>"Is it just our area that’s like this? And how much temperature difference between the seasons does it take?" said Schatzberg.</p>



<p>This research demonstrates that the natural world is a treasure trove of innovation, waiting to be discovered.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. <p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
