<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>

<p>A colossal river of ice, Greenland's Petermann Glacier, is disintegrating with shocking speed. Since the early 2000s, its melting rate has tripled. Rising tides threaten to inundate coastal cities and displace millions worldwide. </p>



<p>Researchers from the University of California, Irvine (<a href="https://uci.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCI</a>), and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (<a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JPL</a>) have pinpointed the intrusion of warm ocean water beneath the glacier as a key factor.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shifting-with-the-tides">Shifting with the tides</h2>



<p>Scientists were initially baffled by how quickly Petermann Glacier was <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/petermann-glacier-may-release-another-large-iceberg/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">losing</a> ice. That's when they made a remarkable discovery: the glacier isn't fixed in place. Instead, it shifts by kilometers with the changing tides. </p>



<p>"Satellite data revealed that the glacier shifts by several kilometers – or thousands of feet – as tides change," explained Ratnakar Gadi, UCI PhD candidate and lead author of the study.</p>



<p>The team mapped this massive movement and its impact on the ice. What they found shifts our entire understanding of how glaciers interact with the ocean.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-grounding-zone">The grounding zone</h2>



<p>While scientists are used to thinking about the impact of warming air temperatures on ice, the real action is happening beneath the surface. Warmer seawater is making its way far beneath Petermann Glacier, thinning it from below. </p>



<p>Researchers found the highest melt rates at a crucial area called the "grounding zone." This zone is where the glacier transitions from resting on land to floating on seawater.</p>



<p>“Seawater rises and falls with changes in oceanic tides in that zone and melts grounded ice from below vigorously,” said study senior author Eric Rignot, UCI professor of Earth system science. And the shape of this zone, scientists found, was a major contributor to the rapid melt.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modeling-petermann-glacier-s-melt">Modeling Petermann Glacier's melt</h2>



<p>To unravel the relative impact of warmer water versus the changing grounding zone, the UCI-led team relied on a sophisticated computer model from the <a href="https://www.mit.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</a>. </p>



<p>When they only factored in warmer ocean temperatures, the glacier thinned by an estimated 40 meters. But, when they incorporated the expansion of the grounding zone, the modeled ice loss skyrocketed to 140 meters – more than three times as much.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications">Study implications</h2>



<p>The study paints a far more dire picture of the glacier's future and highlights a fundamental shift in our understanding of ice-ocean interactions. The grounding zone, once viewed as a less significant factor, is now understood to be critical. </p>



<p>Glaciers like Petermann are losing their grip on land and retreating because of this underwater melt. And the retreat has a cascading effect.</p>



<p>"The results published in this paper have major implications for ice sheet modeling and projections of sea level rise,” Rignot said. </p>



<p>“Earlier numerical studies indicated that including melt in the grounding zone would double the projections of glacier mass loss. The modeling work in this study confirms these fears. Glaciers melt much faster in the ocean than assumed previously.”</p>

Beyond these, they pinpointed a variety of noticeable odors contributing to each <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ants-build-higher-nests-when-there-are-no-visible-landmarks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ant species</a>' unique flavor.</p>

<p>Weaver ants stand out with a nutty, sweet, and caramel-like aroma, though the researchers also noted some off-flavors. Interestingly, the team observed flavor variations between ants at different developmental stages, suggesting that age influences flavor.</p>



<p>Looking ahead, Liu's team is excited to expand their research to include more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tiny-ants-make-a-huge-contribution-to-forest-regeneration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ant species</a> and developmental stages, such as eggs, and to explore how different processing methods affect flavor. They also aim to conduct sensory evaluations with human panels to further refine their understanding of edible ants' culinary potential.</p>

<p>Researchers have created the highly efficient blue light using organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). These advanced light sources are already in our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/long-term-effects-of-artificial-blue-light-remain-unknown/">devices</a>, but now the team has overcome a major hurdle: making blue light more efficient and longer-lasting. </p>



<p>This could usher in a new era of screen technology that's easier on your eyes, your wallet, and the planet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-current-oled-limitations">Current OLED limitations</h2>



<p>OLEDs are made of special organic materials that glow when electricity is applied. Each pixel on a screen is made up of its own tiny OLED, generating vibrant light without the need for the bulky backlights required by many other display types.</p>



<p>Modern screens create their rainbow of colors by mixing just three core components: red, green, and blue. While red and green OLEDs have been stable for some time, the blue subpixels in a screen are more prone to degrade. </p>



<p>The main problem is that not all the energy you put into an OLED becomes <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/light-color-has-no-impact-on-our-internal-clocks-or-sleep-patterns/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">light</a>. Some is lost to processes that damage the molecule itself. It's particularly bad for blue OLEDs. </p>



<p>This imbalance explains why older screens might exhibit a bluish tint, and why energy efficiency for screens has lagged. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-designing-a-new-oled-molecule">Designing a new OLED molecule</h2>



<p>Traditionally, scientists have focused on making blue OLEDs brighter by pushing lots of energy into a molecule. However, this team took a new approach, designing a molecule with built-in shields that block those energy-wasting degradation pathways.</p>



<p>“With this new molecule we have created a channel to develop more efficient OLEDs that will drive down the energy consumption of our devices in the information era," explained Dr. <a href="https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/about-us/our-staff/e/marc-etherington/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Marc Etherington</a>, assistant professor in Molecular Photophysics at <a href="https://www.northumbria.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Northumbria University</a>.</p>



<p>"As we all work towards net zero targets, this could have a significant impact for both manufacturers and consumers."</p>

<p>Drawing from his parkour experience, Rudin employed machine learning techniques to teach ANYmal new, dynamic skills. <p>Rudin believes that while each new skill might be nearing technical perfection, there's still a vast scope for improvement. Specifically, he sees significant potential in enabling ANYmal to autonomously navigate through unpredictable terrains, such as those strewn with rubble in disaster zones.</p>

<p>The project's second branch, led by Rudin's colleague, Fabian Jenelten, aimed to prepare ANYmal for real-world applications such as disaster response and construction site management. </p>



<p>Jenelten's approach was to blend traditional model-based control methods with machine learning. This combination enabled ANYmal to perform complex maneuvers accurately. Instead, they rely on their environment for warmth or coolness. Finding the perfect balance of sun and shade, while attracting a mate, becomes a dangerous challenge.</p>



<p>Moreover, some dragonflies strategically position themselves in open areas to attract <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/female-dragonflies-fake-deaths/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">females</a>. However, this means spending extended periods in the sun, which can dangerously increase their body temperature. </p>



<p>The waxy coating solves this problem. It acts like a shield, protecting them from losing moisture and overheating. This coating, called pruinescence, can sometimes make dragonflies appear frosty white.</p>

<p>But is this waxy armor an advantage as the climate changes? To find out, the researchers delved into an enormous database of dragonfly sightings -- a staggering 387,000 records -- compiled over time. </p>



<p>They discovered a key pattern, stating that those dragonflies using pruinescence were the most common species in warm and dry areas. </p>



<p>Digging further, they compared records over time, revealing that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dragonfly-wings-inspire-antibacterial-medical-implants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dragonflies</a> with the waxy coating were thriving much better than species without it in changing weather conditions. This suggests they might be more likely to survive in a warming world.</p>

<p>Previously, scientists believed mating behaviors were unchanging, possibly making it harder for species to survive environmental changes. <p>However, the study shows that pruinescence helps some insects survive and thrive. It assists with mating rituals, but also aids survival in harsher climates. This shows that mating behaviors can also help a species survive long-term.</p>



<p>This study changes our understanding of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insect-size-shaped-by-predators-and-temperature/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolution</a>. The value of some traits might be much more complex than we thought. Instead of limiting a species, mating-related traits could provide the adaptability needed to survive in a changing world. </p>

<p>A recent <a href="https://www.arizona.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Arizona</a> study investigates the role of sulfur in the origin of life on Earth. Scientists recalled earth's tumultuous beginnings, with its volcanic landscapes and charged atmosphere, to understand how life could emerge from such a seemingly inhospitable environment.</p>



<p>Sulfur isn't a glamorous star of the periodic table. But it's a chemical shapeshifter, taking on various forms. It helps form proteins, vitamins, and even the building blocks that make up our own DNA. </p>



<p>However, for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/origin-of-life-on-earth-may-have-been-found-in-ancient-hot-springs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early</a> earth, the question becomes whether the <em>right</em> kind of sulfur was around to kickstart the whole process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rna-world-and-sulfite">RNA world and sulfite</h2>



<p>The basis of the study is a theory called the "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rna-world-unraveling-mysteries-life-origin/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RNA world</a>." You might have heard of DNA, its more famous cousin, but RNA is a versatile multitasker. The big idea is that RNA might have been able to both store genetic information and act as a simple enzyme to start the chemical reactions that ultimately led to life. </p>



<p>However, making RNA without the complex biological machinery of modern cells needs a special type of sulfur called "sulfite."</p>



<p>"For about 50 years, people have tried to figure out how to make RNA without enzymes, which is how biology does it," explains Dr. Sukrit Ranjan, a leading researcher investigating this mystery. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-searching-for-sulfur-on-early-earth">Searching for sulfur on early Earth</h2>



<p>The team decided to hunt for clues about how much sulfite might have been available on the young earth. The problem is, sulfur loves to react. Especially in today's world, it's quickly gobbled up by oxygen.</p>



<p>"Of all the atoms that stock the prebiotic shipyard, including carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur, sulfur is perhaps the thorniest," notes Sonny Harman, a scientist at <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>. </p>



<p>But billions of years ago, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/life-on-earth-may-have-extraterrestrial-origins/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">earth's</a> atmosphere had very little oxygen, meaning sulfite might have stood a better chance. Could there have been enough to create the building blocks of RNA?</p>



<p>"No one has actually looked into this in depth outside of other contexts, mainly wastewater management," Dr Ranjan pointed out. The scientists recreated early earth-like conditions in the lab to uncover the secrets.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stability-and-instances-of-sulfite">Stability and instances of sulfite</h2>



<p>Contrary to assumptions, the study exposed a previously unknown characteristic of sulfite – it undergoes disproportionation. This reaction could significantly impact our understanding of its availability for prebiotic chemistry. </p>



<p>"Once it's in the water, what happens to it? Does it stick around for a long time, or does it go away quickly?" Dr Ranjan posed a critical question.</p>



<p>Sulfites could remain stable longer in the absence of oxygen, potentially contributing to the formation of life-essential molecules.</p>



<p>Ranjan's research extends to identifying modern environments that could mirror the conditions of early earth, such as the sulfite-rich <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/life-on-earth-may-have-first-sparked-in-shallow-soda-lakes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pools</a> in Yellowstone National Park. </p>



<p>These sites offer valuable clues about the types of environments that could have supported the accumulation and chemical processing of sulfur compounds.</p>



<p>The implications of this study reach beyond understanding sulfur's role in early earth chemistry. Researchers express excitement about the potential for future research. It could involve integrating geological evidence and biological experiments to further explore the origins of life. </p>

<p>"If true, this implies that sulfite was present in the natural environment in at least some water bodies, similar to what we argue here," Dr. Ranjan said. </p>



<p>His work hints that some of earth's oldest microbes might have evolved precisely in those kinds of environments. And now, even geologists are on the hunt, searching ancient rocks for hidden <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-clues-about-the-origins-of-life-on-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">signs</a> that these life-friendly chemical hotspots existed billions of years ago.</p>



<p>The investigation is far from over, but sulfur, the overlooked element, may have a surprising story of its own to tell.</p>

<p>The enigma of trabectedin’s mechanism of action was deciphered through the collaborative efforts of Dr. Son Kook and Professor Orlando D. Schärer from the Center for Genomic Integrity at the Institute for Basic Science in South Korea, alongside Dr. Vakil Takhaveev and Professor Shana Sturla from ETH Zurich, Switzerland.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-targeting-dna-in-cancer-cells">Targeting DNA in cancer cells</h2>



<p>Their pioneering research revealed that trabectedin induces persistent DNA breaks in cancer cells. This phenomenon notably occurs in cells with robust DNA repair mechanisms, especially those using the transcription-coupled nucleotide excision repair (TC-NER) pathway. </p>



<p>TC-NER is crucial for detecting DNA damage during transcription and initiating the repair process. Trabectedin disrupts this repair process by targeting two key enzymes, ERCC1-XPF and XPG, preventing the completion of the repair mechanism. This disruption leads to enduring DNA breaks, culminating in the death of the cancer cells.</p>



<p>Through these insightful discoveries, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/promising-anti-cancer-treatment-discovered-in-sea-squirts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sea squirts</a> have become an unlikely ally in the ongoing war against cancer. <p>Dr. Son Kook elaborates, “This incision by ERCC1-XPF creates a notable free hydroxyl group in the DNA, allowing us to sequence the DNA and precisely locate these breaks.”</p>

<p>In the remote expanse of northwestern Alaska, the discovery of ancient <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dinosaur-track-site-in-alaska-reveals-remarkable-details-of-the-past/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dinosaur tracks</a>, alongside fossilized plants and tree stumps, has offered unprecedented insights into the lush and wet environments of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extraordinary-dinosaur-fossils-discovered-from-the-end-of-cretaceous-era/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">prehistoric era</a> when dinosaurs freely roamed between Asia and North America.</p>



<p>This significant find dates back approximately 100 million years ago. It illuminates new aspects of the climate and animal migration patterns of that era. This discovery provides a clearer picture of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/in-alaska-dinosaurs-lived-where-rainfall-was-optimal/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ancient world</a> that once existed in this region. </p>



<p>The study was led by Anthony Fiorillo from <a href="https://www.smu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SMU</a> and Paul McCarthy of University of Alaska Fairbanks (<a href="https://www.uaf.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UAF</a>), and UAF graduate student Eric Orphys, was published in the journal <em>Geosciences</em>.</p>

<p>For over two decades, Fiorillo and McCarthy have explored <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tooth-alaskas-first-inhabitants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alaska's prehistoric landscapes</a>. They have been striving to integrate geological and paleontological data to reconstruct ancient climates. </p>



<p>“We've had projects for the last 20 years in Alaska trying to integrate sedimentology, dinosaur paleontology and the paleoclimate indicators,” McCarthy said. “We’ve done work in three other formations -- in Denali, on the North Slope and in Southwest Alaska -- and they're about 70 million years old.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bering-land-bridge-and-the-nanushuk-formation">Bering Land Bridge and the Nanushuk Formation</h2>



<p>Their recent focus on the Nanushuk Formation has unveiled fascinating details about the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/colossal-new-dinosaur-was-hidden-in-spains-early-cretaceous-fossils/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cretaceous</a> period. This includes insights into the Bering Land Bridge, which served as a vital connection between the continents. </p>



<p>Fiorillo, who now works at <a href="https://www.nmnaturalhistory.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science</a>, highlighted the significance of this era in ancient Alaska.</p>



<p>"What interested us about looking at rocks of this age is this is roughly the time that people think of as the beginning of the Bering Land Bridge -- the connection between Asia and North America,” he said. “We want to know who was using it, how they were using it and what the conditions were like."</p>



<p>Their research provides insights into contemporary climate change. According to the team, studying ancient climates helps us comprehend the challenges of our warming planet. </p>



<p>“The mid-Cretaceous was the hottest point in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-ancestors-coexisted-with-dinosaurs-yes-according-to-shocking-new-research/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cretaceous</a>,” McCarthy noted. “The Nanushuk Formation gives us a snapshot of what a high-latitude ecosystem looks like on a warmer Earth.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-treasure-trove-of-prehistoric-life">Treasure trove of prehistoric life</h2>



<p>The Nanushuk Formation spans the central and western North Slope and is a rich source of evidence. It dates back to the mid-Cretaceous, around the time when the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-arrived-in-the-americas-10000-years-earlier-than-previously-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bering Land Bridge</a> first emerged. </p>



<p>Fieldwork conducted between 2015 and 2017 in the Coke Basin area revealed about 75 fossil tracks. These findings and other remnants indicate a vibrant, riverine ecosystem in ancient Alaska.</p>



<p>Their findings included diverse dinosaur tracks and numerous fossilized tree stumps, some measuring up to 2 feet in diameter. This painted a vivid picture of a lush, prehistoric environment. The researchers' analysis of these tracks revealed a predominance of bipedal plant-eating dinosaurs. These constituted 59% of the total tracks found.</p>



<p>Moreover, the abundance of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-tracks-discovered-that-predate-the-oldest-birds-by-60-million-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bird tracks</a> unearthed suggests the warm paleoclimate of the area may have attracted avian species during the Cretaceous. This role mirrors how it attracts North America’s shorebirds today.</p>



<p>“We were at a spot where we eventually realized that for at least 400 yards we were walking on an ancient landscape,” Fiorillo said. “On that landscape we found large upright trees with little trees in between and leaves on the ground. We had tracks on the ground and fossilized feces.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-alaska-was-wet-warm-and-lush">Ancient Alaska was wet, warm and lush</h2>



<p>Through carbon isotope analysis of wood samples, the team determined that the region received approximately 70 inches of annual precipitation. This supports the theory of a significantly warmer and wetter climate during the mid-Cretaceous compared to present-day conditions. </p>



<p>Fiorillo likened the ancient climate to modern-day Miami, highlighting the significant differences in temperature and rainfall.</p>



<p>“The temperature was much warmer than it is today, and what’s possibly more interesting is that it rained a lot,” Fiorillo said. “The samples we analyzed indicate it was roughly equivalent to modern-day Miami. That’s pretty substantial.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-environmental-implications-and-future-study">Environmental implications and future study</h2>



<p>McCarthy's expertise in fossil soils allowed the team to reconstruct the ancient landscape of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-alaskan-hunters-advanced/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alaska</a>. They identified river channels, flood deposits, and other environmental features. These features provided a habitat for diverse dinosaur species.</p>



<p>“We can say here's a river channel, here's a flood deposit, here's a levee, here's the floodplain, here's a swamp,” McCarthy said. “And so if we're able to find tracks in that section, then you can sometimes say that a group of dinosaurs seems to have really liked being here as opposed to there.”</p>



<p>Fiorillo insists that there’s much more work to be done. “This puts a new dot on the map and tells us there's a lot here, and it fits into the bigger picture,” he concluded. “The big picture is we're trying to get better resolution on what life was like in the high latitudes back at the time the dinosaurs were roaming around.”</p>

<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>Deep tickling – the kind that makes you laugh uncontrollably – involves complex brain circuits and is fundamentally social. You literally cannot tickle yourself with this type of stimulation.</p>

<p>Your cerebellum acts like a prediction machine, recent findings show. When you move your own hand to touch yourself, your brain generates precise predictions about what you will feel and then cancels out the tickling sensation through neural inhibition.</p>

<p>Dr. Konstantina Kilteni's 2025 research, published in <em><a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adt0350" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Science Advances</a></em>, reveals another technique: place your hand on the tickler's hand. This allows your brain to partially predict the sensations, reducing the tickling response by up to 90 percent.</p>



<p>"Your brain is essentially learning to override its own reflexes," Kilteni explained in her review of tickling research.</p>

According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
