<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>

<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>

<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>

<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>

<p>“[The discovery] was a very big deal, because these unit charges interacting in a way to give something like fractional charge was very, very bizarre,” Ju says. “At the time, there were no theory predictions, and the experiments surprised everyone.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Marine mammals such as whales and dolphins rely on their diet, which consists of fish, squid, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/blue-ringed-octopus-a-master-of-deception-inspires-new-technology/">octopus</a>, crustaceans, and other marine animals, to obtain necessary nutrients and elements. This diet, however, also exposes them to hazardous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heavy-metals-in-food-pose-a-threat-to-childrens-health/">heavy metals</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-health-implications-nbsp">Human health implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Research has shown that dolphins and whales stranded along the Southeastern Coast of the U.S. have high toxin levels. </p>



<p>The importance of tracking these contaminants in stranded <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plastic-waste-may-be-disrupting-the-sex-lives-of-marine-animals/">marine animals</a>, which are key indicators of oceanic pollution and may have implications for human health, cannot be overstated.</p>



<p>Despite the critical nature of this issue, comprehensive data on how these toxins distribute within the bodies of these animals, particularly for less commonly encountered species, and how toxin levels vary with the animal's sex, species, age, and other demographic details is lacking.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-toxins-in-stranded-whales-and-dolphins">Studying toxins in stranded whales and dolphins</h2>



<p>A study led by the <a href="https://www.fau.edu/hboi/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute</a> at Florida Atlantic University, sought to investigate the presence, concentrations, and distribution of essential and non-essential trace elements, including heavy metals, in various tissues (blubber, kidney, liver, muscle, skin) and fecal samples from 90 stranded whales and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dolphins-have-accents-that-vary-by-region/">dolphins</a> in Georgia and Florida between 2007 and 2021.</p>



<p>This investigation analyzed 319 samples from nine species - including pygmy sperm whales, dwarf sperm whales, Gervais’ beaked whales, Risso’s dolphins, short-finned pilot whales, sperm whales, melon-headed whales, a Blainville’s beaked whale, and a false <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/killer-whale-mothers-pay-a-high-price-for-raising-sons/">killer whale</a> - for seven essential (cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, zinc) and five non-essential (arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, thallium) elements. </p>



<p>The species studied were of high and similar trophic levels, subsisting on a diet of cephalopods and fish.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-varying-levels-of-contamination-nbsp">Varying levels of contamination&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The experts found that Risso’s dolphins and short-finned pilot whales exhibited the highest median concentrations of mercury, cadmium, and lead. In contrast, dwarf sperm whales showed the lowest levels of these contaminants.</p>



<p>Significantly, adult pygmy and dwarf sperm whales stranded from 2019 to 2021 demonstrated increased concentrations of several heavy metals compared to those stranded from 2010 to 2018, indicating a growing exposure risk.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-interesting-trends-nbsp">Interesting trends&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“When we separated phylogenetic groups into age classes and compared median concentrations of heavy metals in specific tissue types between adult specimens of species, we found some interesting trends,” said senior author Annie Page, an associate research professor and clinical veterinarian at FAU Harbor Branch.</p>



<p>Fecal samples, which are collected non-invasively, had the highest concentrations of many elements. Besides fecal samples, the liver or hepatic tissues contained the most iron, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, and selenium; kidneys or renal tissues had the highest cadmium levels; skin had the highest zinc levels; and the liver and kidneys primarily contained copper, arsenic, and lead.</p>



<p>The researchers found the lowest median concentrations of mercury and cadmium in liver, kidney, blubber, and muscle samples, with dwarf sperm whales having the lowest skin mercury concentration and the lowest liver lead concentration.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heavy-metal-exposure">Heavy metal exposure</h2>



<p>Mercury, a particularly toxic element in marine environments, can accumulate and magnify through the food web, with cetaceans ingesting mercury mainly through contaminated prey.</p>



<p>“Exposure to heavy metal contaminants can result in oxidative stress, which can impair protein function, damage DNA and disrupt membrane lipids,” Page explained. “Heavy metal exposure has been linked to degenerative heart disease, immunodeficiency and increased parasite infestations, among other disease risks.”</p>



<p>“Because tissue concentrations of heavy metal contaminants also vary based on an individual animal’s sex, age class, trophic level and location, among other factors, it is important to first establish baseline values and then continue to monitor cetacean populations for exposure to these toxicants,” Page concluded.</p>

<p>Moreover, it has been suggested that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-men-and-women-react-differently-to-stress/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stress</a> might play a role in facilitating the spread of cancer, though the mechanisms behind this phenomenon remained elusive -- until now.</p>



<p>An enlightening study conducted by Xue-Yan He, a former postdoctorate researcher at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (<a href="https://www.cshl.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CSHL</a>), alongside Adjunct Professor <a href="https://www.cshl.edu/research/faculty-staff/mikala-egeblad/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mikala Egeblad</a> and Professor <a href="https://www.cshl.edu/research/faculty-staff/linda-van-aelst/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Linda Van Aelst</a>, explores how the human mind influences cancer metastasis. </p>



<p>Their findings could revolutionize treatment strategies, offering hope for preventative measures against cancer's spread.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-intricate-dance-of-stress-and-cancer">Intricate dance of stress and cancer</h2>



<p>Xue-Yan He articulates a reality many cancer patients face: the omnipresence of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/physically-active-children-cope-better-with-stress/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stress</a>, driven by the diagnosis, insurance concerns, and familial responsibilities. </p>



<p>Understanding the impact of stress on cancer progression is crucial, as He notes, given its inevitability in patients' lives.</p>



<p>“Stress is something we cannot really avoid in cancer patients. You can imagine if you are diagnosed, you cannot stop thinking about the disease or insurance or family. So it is very important to understand how stress works on us," He explains.</p>



<p>The collaborative research effort led by He and Egeblad has identified a critical mechanism by which <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stress-induced-increases-in-biological-age-can-be-reversed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stress</a> contributes to cancer metastasis. </p>



<p>They discovered that stress prompts specific white blood cells, known as neutrophils, to form web-like structures that render body tissues more susceptible to cancer spread.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-experiment-from-observation-to-insight">The experiment: From observation to insight</h2>



<p>The researchers embarked on their investigation by simulating chronic stress in mice with cancer. They found a significant increase in metastatic lesions, with instances of up to fourfold escalation in metastasis.</p>



<p>Further exploration revealed that stress hormones, glucocorticoids, interact with neutrophils, inducing the formation of <a href="https://www.cshl.edu/how-an-antiviral-immune-reaction-can-go-too-far/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NETs</a> (neutrophil extracellular traps). </p>



<p>While NETs typically serve a protective role against infections by trapping harmful microorganisms, they paradoxically facilitate a metastasis-conducive environment in the context of cancer.</p>



<p>To verify the connection between stress-induced NET formation and increased metastasis, He conducted three pivotal experiments involving neutrophil removal, NET-destroying drugs, and mice genetically modified to have neutrophils unresponsive to glucocorticoids. </p>



<p>The outcome was consistent across all tests: <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chronic-stress-causes-the-brain-to-crave-comfort-food/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stressed</a> mice did not exhibit increased metastasis.</p>

<p>The study's findings advocate for the integration of stress reduction into cancer treatment and prevention strategies. </p>



<p>As Linda Van Aelst asserts, minimizing stress should be a critical component of comprehensive cancer care. “<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/psilocybin-microdosing-may-improve-mental-health-by-boosting-stress-resilience/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Reducing stress</a> should be a component of cancer treatment <em>and</em> prevention,” she says.</p>



<p>Looking forward, the research team is optimistic about the development of drugs targeting NET formation, offering a preventive approach for patients at risk of metastasis. </p>

<p>"<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/korean-red-ginseng-may-alleviate-alcohol-addiction-study-reveals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ginseng</a> can play a significant role as a nutritional supplement for recovery after exercise," states Borja Muñoz, a fitness coach and lead author of the study. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-science-behind-ginseng-and-exercise">Science behind ginseng and exercise</h2>



<p>Under the guidance of Patricia Martínez, a dietician, nutritionist, and course instructor at UOC, alongside researchers Rafael Bailón and <a href="https://www.uoc.edu/en/news/media-services/experts-guide/laura-esquius" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Laura Esquius</a>, the team meticulously reviewed over 700 scientific articles to confirm these benefits for healthy adults engaging in physical activity.</p>



<p>"When taken together with a balanced diet, ginseng can provide additional nutrition for athletes or anyone else who does physical exercise on a regular basis, Muñoz explained. </p>



<p>"It's also worth noting that, unless it's medically contraindicated in any given case, taking ginseng on a regular basis is considered beneficial (or at least not harmful) for healthy people."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ginseng-s-impact-on-muscle-recovery-and-fatigue">Ginseng's impact on muscle recovery and fatigue</h2>



<p>The research demonstrates that ginseng significantly reduces post-exercise muscle damage and enhances <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/almonds-accelerate-recovery-after-strenuous-exercise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">muscle regeneration</a>, helping the body to recover from muscle fatigue and damage. </p>



<p>This is attributed to the active compounds in ginseng stimulating the central nervous system, possessing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and regulating cortisol, thus improving metabolic functions and bolstering the immune system.</p>



<p>Long-term, systematic ginseng consumption has been shown to mitigate biological markers responsible for exercise-induced muscle damage and inflammation, such as creatine kinase (CK) and interleukin 6 (IL-6). It also reduces lactate production, which is linked to muscle fatigue.</p>



<p>By decreasing fatigue, ginseng potentially lowers the risk of injury, thereby enhancing athletic performance. </p>



<p>"Although recovery times vary based on the nature of the injury and between individuals, the damaged structures share the same physiological processes. That's why professionals in this field must obtain the most efficient physiological context, to ensure that each person can recover as well and as quickly as possible. This is where ginseng comes in, as it can play a significant role in recovering from injuries," said Muñoz about the possible benefits to athletes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tailoring-ginseng-intake-for-all-types-of-exercise">Tailoring ginseng intake for all types of exercise</h2>



<p>The study originated from Muñoz's observations during his tenure as a fitness coach and injury specialist at a football club in China, where <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/top-uses-for-ginseng/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ginseng</a> was a popular supplement among players for its energy-boosting effects. </p>



<p>"Our aim was to learn more about the effects of ginseng in a specific situation, in this case in connection with exercise, and to provide verifiable evidence of its ability to improve the body's response to the stimuli of chronic load in sport, helping athletes to recover between training sessions, as the footballers themselves reported that it worked just like an energy drink," said Muñoz.</p>



<p>This research opens avenues for further investigation into ginseng's role in enhancing sports performance and recovery. </p>



<p>Patricia Martínez points out the potential for future studies to establish a ginseng consumption protocol, optimizing its benefits for athletes. </p>



<p>"Of the possible future research we're considering, a study to establish a scheduled consumption protocol to find out exactly how and when athletes should take ginseng to optimize its benefits within a given timeframe is particularly appealing, as the studies carried out in relation to these cases suffer from a lack of diversity and scientific evidence," said Martínez.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-exercise-ginseng-as-a-dietary-staple">Future of exercise: Ginseng as a dietary staple</h2>

These black holes are not idle; they voraciously consume material from their surroundings, growing in mass daily. </p>



<p>The particular quasar at the center of this discovery is expanding at a remarkable rate, assimilating mass equivalent to one Sun each day, positioning it as the fastest-growing black hole known to science.</p>



<p>The process through which these black holes accrue matter is incredibly energetic, emitting immense quantities of light and rendering quasars as some of the most brilliant entities in our sky. This inherent brightness allows even those quasars located at vast distances to be visible from Earth. </p>



<p>The luminosity of a quasar directly correlates with the growth rate of its supermassive black hole, thus the most luminous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/feeding-frenzy-study-reveals-the-eating-habits-of-black-holes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quasars</a> harbor the fastest-expanding black holes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-hole-powers-the-brightest-object-ever-seen">Black hole powers the brightest object ever seen</h2>



<p>Christian Wolf, an astronomer at the Australian National University (<a href="https://www.anu.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ANU</a>) and lead author of the study, encapsulated the significance of this discovery. </p>



<p>“We have discovered the fastest-growing black hole known to date. It has a mass of 17 billion Suns and eats just over a Sun per day. This makes it the most luminous object in the known Universe.” </p>



<p>The quasar, designated J0529-4351, is situated so far from Earth that its light has journeyed over 12 billion years to reach us.</p>



<p>The energy emitted by the matter spiraling into this colossal black hole, configured in a disc formation, is staggering. Quasar J0529-4351, the brightest object ever seen by humans, shines over 500 trillion times more luminously than the Sun. </p>



<p>Samuel Lai, an ANU PhD student and co-author of the study, adds, “All this light comes from a hot accretion disc that measures seven light-years in diameter -- this must be the largest accretion disc in the Universe." </p>



<p>To put this into perspective, the disc's size is about 15,000 times the distance from the Sun to Neptune's orbit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-obscurity-to-spotlight-journey-of-quasar-j0529-4351">Obscurity to spotlight: Journey of quasar J0529-4351</h2>



<p>What's equally astonishing is how this quasar managed to elude detection until now, despite its immense brightness. </p>



<p>“It is a surprise that it has remained unknown until today, when we already know about a million less impressive quasars. It has literally been staring us in the face until now,” shared co-author Christopher Onken, an astronomer at ANU. </p>



<p>Intriguingly, this object appeared in images from the ESO Schmidt Southern Sky Survey as far back as 1980 but was not recognized as a quasar for decades.</p>



<p>The quest to identify quasars involves analyzing vast amounts of observational data, a task often facilitated by machine-learning models. However, these models, trained on existing datasets, may overlook extraordinary objects like J0529-4351, mistaking them for nearer, less significant stars.</p>



<p>It wasn't until observations from the ANU 2.3-metre telescope at <a href="https://rsaa.anu.edu.au/observatories/siding-spring-observatory">Siding Spring Observatory</a> pinpointed J0529-4351 as a distant quasar. Yet, confirming its status as the most luminous quasar observed required the more powerful X-shooter spectrograph on ESO’s VLT in the Chilean Atacama Desert.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-cosmic-exploration">Future of cosmic exploration</h2>



<p>This discovery paves the way for further studies with advanced instruments such as the GRAVITY+ upgrade on ESO’s VLT Interferometer (VLTI), which will allow for precise measurements of black holes' masses, even those located far from Earth. </p>



<p>Moreover, the construction of ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) in the Chilean Atacama Desert will enhance our capability to identify and study such elusive cosmic phenomena.</p>



<p>The exploration of distant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/supermassive-black-holes-are-very-messy-eaters/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">supermassive black holes</a> offers insights into the early Universe's mysteries, including the formation and evolution of galaxies. </p>



<p>For Wolf, the motivation is also personal: “Personally, I simply like the chase,” he confesses. “For a few minutes a day, I get to feel like a child again, playing treasure hunt, and now I bring everything to the table that I have learned since.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-from-quasar-j0529-4351">Lessons from quasar J0529-4351</h2>



<p>In summary, the discovery of the brightest object ever seen in the universe by human eyes, has invigorated the astronomical community. </p>

<p>The Gill Oxygen Limitation (GOL) theory suggests that fish are shrinking as global waters warm due to the limited surface area of their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-shoulders-evolved-from-the-jawbones-of-ancient-fish-called-placoderms/">gills</a>, which constrains oxygen uptake. </p>



<p>However, this widely accepted hypothesis has been recently challenged by a team of scientists led by the <a href="https://www.umass.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Massachusetts Amherst</a>.</p>



<p>The research, focusing on brook trout, found that while <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-fish-shrink/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">higher temperatures</a> indeed resulted in smaller fish sizes, the change was not directly linked to gill surface area limitations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-temperature-on-fish-size">Impact of temperature on fish size</h2>



<p>Joshua Lonthair, a lecturer in biology at UMass Amherst and the study's lead author, emphasized the uncertainty surrounding the impact of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-temperature-threshold-can-the-human-body-handle/">temperature</a> on fish sizes.</p>



<p>"We know that global climate change is happening and our oceans and rivers are getting warmer. And we know that many animals - not just fish - are growing to smaller adult body sizes under warmer temperatures. We even have a name for this, the Temperature Size Rule. But despite decades of research, we still don’t understand why size decreases as temperature increases."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers set out to examine the effects of increased water temperatures on three critical aspects of the Gill Oxygen Limitation (GOL) theory: the growth rate, energy needs, and gill surface area of fish. </p>



<p>They chose brook trout as their subjects due to the species' rapid growth, significance to both the economy and ecology of the Northeastern U.S., and ease of study.</p>



<p>The team started the experiment with young brook trout, each weighing between one and two grams, placing them in tanks of either standard 15º Celsius water or warmer 20º Celsius water.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts monitored the fish's weight and size monthly from the beginning, alongside measurements of their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breathing-less-oxygen-could-extend-your-lifespan-by-50-or-more/">oxygen</a> consumption after two weeks, three months, and six months to gauge their metabolic rates. Additionally, they collected samples of the gills from these fish to assess any changes in their surface area over time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-fish-are-getting-smaller">Why fish are getting smaller</h2>



<p>Analysis of the collected data revealed significant findings: the brook trout in the heated tanks exhibited reduced size, consistent with the Temperature Size Rule expectations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Interestingly, the data also showed that the gill surface area was sufficient for the fish's oxygen needs, contradicting the GOL theory's assumption that limited gill surface area restricts growth at higher temperatures.</p>



<p>Moreover, although the metabolic rates of fish in the warmer tanks initially increased, indicating higher oxygen consumption, these rates normalized by the six-month mark. This adaptation suggests that brook trout can physiologically adjust to warmer conditions over time, further challenging the GOL theory's premise that temperature-induced oxygen limitations constrain fish growth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-predicting-future-climate-impacts-nbsp">Predicting future climate impacts&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“Oxygen use may still be an important limiting factor in fish size but, taken together, our findings show that GOL cannot predict what we’re seeing, and this has implications for predicting climate impacts on future fisheries and ecosystems,” Lonthair said</p>



<p>"Our work highlights the importance of interdisciplinarity. Fisheries and macroecology scientists tend to work on the population and species level, while the physiologists tend to work on the individual and cellular levels. But these are academic distinctions, not natural ones, and if we’re going to help fish survive warming waters, we need to work across biological scales and join the insights of all these fields," added senior author Professor Lisa Komoroske.</p>

<p>Currently, the Sgr A* is in a relatively inactive state. This means it's interacting minimally with nearby matter, unlike its usual behavior of swallowing gas and dust and ejecting powerful jets.</p>



<p>Sgr A*'s current "outflows" - streams of matter and energy - are weak and diffuse, suggesting limited fuel available near the black hole. However, this state could change dramatically if more material gets close. Events like a star wandering too close or gas clouds drifting nearby could provide fresh "food" for the black hole.</p>



<p>“This work, however, shows that this could change if the amount of material in the vicinity of Sgr A* increases,” said Professor Daly. Increased material would allow Sgr A*'s spin to generate stronger, more focused outflows. The black hole's rotation efficiently transfers energy to incoming matter, accelerating it to high speeds.</p>

<p>Years of research from <a href="https://oregonstate.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oregon State University</a> reveal how the whales bend and adapt, and also warn of big changes in the Arctic, impacting everything in the marine ecosystem.</p>

<p>To understand why bowhead whales are changing their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-has-unpredictable-effects-on-salmon-migration/">migration</a> patterns, the researchers turned to a powerful tool: satellite tags. These tiny devices, attached to individual whales, allowed scientists to follow their journeys across the vast Arctic sea.</p>



<p>“Bowhead whales are highly vocal. Males sing pretty much twenty-four-seven from fall through spring, so you know when they’re there,” said Dr. Angela Szesciorka, a marine scientist at the Marine Mammal Institute who led the study.</p>

<p>Bowhead whales usually choose specific, icy areas for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wolf-spiders-change-their-mating-strategies-when-it-rains/">mating</a>, seeking protection from predators and harsh environments. Changing ice cover and warmer water could force them to breed elsewhere or at different times, potentially affecting their safety and calf survival.</p>



<p>Beyond these location issues, broader climate impacts pile on the stress: less food, more ships and exploration, and noisy oceans can all harm whale health and breeding behavior.</p>



<p>Dr. Szesciorka is concerned about a potential increase in ship collisions with bowhead whales. As whales shift north due to climate change and more ships travel in those areas, the risk of accidents goes up. “With this general northward shift paired with an increase in vessels and shipping, the threat of ship strikes will probably increase,” she said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Arctic Ocean is teeming with life, from tiny plankton to massive whales. All these creatures depend on each other to keep the ecosystem healthy. That shows they can adapt to their changing environments for now. But will there be a point where they can’t adapt anymore? We have to wait and see,” said Dr. Szesciorka.</p>

<p>This intriguing possibility is supported by findings from a recent Yale-led study, which suggests that planets orbiting two stars might actually have climates more conducive to life than previously thought.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-life-on-planets-with-two-stars">Rethinking life on planets with two stars</h2>



<p>This thought-provoking research indicates that binary star systems -- where planets orbit a primary star with a secondary star also in orbit around the system -- might inherently favor a more orderly <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/astronomers-find-a-planet-named-halla-that-shouldnt-exist/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmic arrangement</a>. </p>



<p>This challenges the long-held perception of the universe as a domain ruled by chaos and misalignment. </p>



<p>"We show, for the first time, that there is an unexpected pile-up of systems where everything is aligned," stated Malena Rice, an assistant professor of astronomy at <a href="https://www.yale.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yale</a> and the study's lead author. </p>



<p>“The planets orbit precisely in the same direction that the first star rotates, and the second star orbits that system on the same plane as the planets.”</p>



<p>Her team's research, published on February 22 in <em>The Astronomical Journal</em>, reveals a surprising trend of planetary and stellar alignments.</p>

<p>By employing data from the Gaia DR3 catalog, the <a href="https://exoplanetarchive.ipac.caltech.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA Exoplanet Archive</a>, and the TEPCat catalog, Rice and her colleagues have meticulously crafted 3D geometries of planetary orbits in binary systems. </p>



<p>Their analysis uncovered that out of 40 systems studied, nine exhibited perfect alignment -- with planets orbiting in the same direction as the rotation of the primary star, and the secondary star moving along the same plane as the planets.</p>



<p>This alignment could signify a natural inclination towards order in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alien-worlds-unraveling-the-mysteries-of-exoplanets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planetary systems</a>, potentially increasing the likelihood of stable conditions suitable for life. </p>



<p>"It could be an indication that planetary systems like to push toward an orderly configuration," Rice explained, noting the significance of such alignment for the formation and sustainability of life. </p>



<p>Misaligned stellar companions can destabilize planetary orbits or cause extreme temperature variations, both of which are detrimental to the development of life.</p>

<p>The world is currently facing a critical health crisis that disproportionately affects our youngest citizens. Recent research has brought to light the very high increase in premature births and the severe health outcomes children face due to the impacts of extreme <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-could-cause-one-billion-deaths-over-the-next-century/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a>. </p>



<p>These include an increase in preterm births, a higher incidence of respiratory diseases and death, and a growing number of hospital admissions for children. </p>



<p>Without immediate global action, these disturbing trends are set to impact children's health for generations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-victims-of-climate-change">Hidden victims of climate change</h2>



<p>For decades, scientists have been sounding the alarm on the risks associated with extreme weather events such as temperatures, floods, and bushfires. </p>



<p>However, a disturbing study published in the <em>Science of the Total Environment</em> journal marks the first comprehensive review of scientific evidence on how climate change affects children's health and premature births. </p>



<p>The study, led by Dr. Lewis Weeda from <a href="https://www.uwa.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The University of Western Australia</a> and the Wal-yan Respiratory Research Centre at <a href="https://www.telethonkids.org.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Telethon Kids Institute</a>, along with Matthew Flinders Professor of Global Ecology, Corey Bradshaw, from <a href="https://www.flinders.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Flinders University</a>, synthesizes the findings of 163 health studies worldwide. </p>



<p>It aims to guide government planning towards mitigating the adverse health outcomes of climate change on future generations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-premature-births-and-climate-change">Premature births and climate change</h2>



<p>The researchers' analysis revealed a startling statistic. The risk of preterm birth could increase by an average of 60% due to exposure to extreme temperatures. </p>



<p>Professor Corey Bradshaw expressed concern over the global increase in preterm birth rates, which could lead to lifelong complications for millions of children. </p>



<p>"We've crunched the data to show how certain types of future weather events will worsen particular medical issues in the population," he explained, highlighting a direct correlation between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-denial-environment-warming-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> and various child health issues. </p>



<p>“We identified many direct links between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/survey-mother-nature-is-more-likely-to-solve-climate-change-than-geoengineering/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> and child health, the strongest of which was a 60% increased risk on average of preterm birth from exposure to temperature extremes. Respiratory diseases, mortality, and morbidity, among others, were also made worse by climate change," Bradshaw added.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-climate-change-impacts-on-child-health">Broader climate change impacts on child health</h2>



<p>Apart from the significant risk of preterm births, respiratory diseases, mortality, and morbidity rates are also expected to worsen due to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-disinformation-is-a-persistent-scourge-in-the-battle-against-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a>.</p>



<p>The study also examined the effects of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aviations-contribution-to-climate-change-is-expected-to-intensify/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">air pollutants</a>, finding that while the impact was less severe compared to temperature extremes, it was still significant. </p>



<p>“The effects of different air pollutants on children’s health outcomes were smaller compared to temperature effects, but most pollutants still had an effect of some type, so the news is concerning," Bradshaw explained. </p>



<p>"The children’s health issues we identified depend on weather extremes -- cold extremes give rise to respiratory diseases, while drought and extreme rainfall can result in stunted growth for a population.”</p>



<p>Weather extremes, such as cold, drought, and excessive rainfall, were linked to specific health outcomes like respiratory diseases and stunted growth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-socio-economic-divide">The socio-economic divide</h2>



<p>A concerning aspect of the research is its indication that the majority of analyzed studies were conducted in high-income nations, which contrasts sharply with the reality that children in lower-income countries face the highest risk of inadequate healthcare, infrastructure, and stable food supply. </p>



<p>This disparity suggests that even advanced economies are not immune to the impacts of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/more-than-48-million-americans-deny-that-climate-change-is-real/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> on children's health, with risks varying across continents and socio-economic circumstances.</p>



<p>Professor Bradshaw warned of the rising social and financial costs associated with climate change, citing asthma as an example, which could cost up to US$1.5 billion due to a single fire season in the future. </p>



<p>“Given that climate influences childhood disease, social and financial costs will continue to rise as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-climate-change-and-biodiversity-loss-are-one-indivisible-global-health-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> progresses, placing increasing pressure on families and health services," Bradshaw said.</p>



<p>"For example, asthma has been estimated to cost as much as US$1.5 billion due to a single fire season in the future, while another study estimated the costs of a single case of childhood asthma at up to US$23,573 in the coming years.”</p>



<p>The research also highlights how geography plays a role in the health impacts of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/beneficial-plant-bacteria-likely-to-decline-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a>, with examples from Australia and South Africa showing differing consequences such as increased premature births and higher mortality rates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cost-of-inaction-economic-and-social-implications">Cost of inaction: Economic and social implications</h2>



<p>Dr. Weeda emphasized the need for immediate action to protect children from climate-related diseases. “Our research recognizes some important areas where children are most vulnerable to climate change,” he said. </p>



<p>“The development of public health policies to counter these climate-related diseases, alongside efforts to reduce anthropogenic climate change, must be addressed if we are to protect current and future children.”</p>



<p>Finding solutions and implementing climate adaptation and mitigation policies would positively impact multiple <a href="https://sdgs.un.org/goals" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">United Nations Sustainable Development Goals</a>. </p>



<p>Climate change is universal and adversely affecting all countries and people, and we must prepare societies for mounting threats to child health.</p>

Dr. James Saulsbury from the <a href="https://ku.edu/">University of Kansas</a> has uncovered secrets that change how we understand <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/evolution-is-not-as-random-as-we-thought/">evolution</a>.</p>



<p>The research shows a different story. It's not just about adapting, but also about chance and luck playing a big role in who lives and who dies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-red-queen-hypothesis-nbsp">Red Queen hypothesis&nbsp;</h2>

Their abundance and distribution aren't necessarily determined by being "better" or "worse," but by the whims of random births, deaths, immigrations, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-activities-linked-to-1430-bird-extinctions/">extinctions</a>. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-analysis-of-ancient-animals">Analysis of ancient animals</h2>



<p>Dr. Saulsbury's team delved into the rich fossil record of microscopic marine creatures known as zooplankton. This allowed them to track species' lifespans over millions of years.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By analyzing the fossil’s ages at the time they vanished, the researchers could compare them to other species.</p>



<p>Dr. Saulsbury’s aim was to see if extinction was more like a random lottery, as the "neutral theory" predicted, or a fierce competition where only the best adapted survived, as the Red Queen hypothesis suggests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chance-and-the-struggle-for-survival-nbsp">Chance and the struggle for survival&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Surprisingly, the researchers concluded that the forces shaping species' fates might be a mix of chance and the basic struggle for survival in a world with limited <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-environmental-cost-of-ai-what-are-we-willing-to-give-up-for-computing-power/">resources</a>.</p>



<p>In the past, people believed younger species were less likely to die out than older ones because they had more time to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/birds-blend-in-to-adapt-to-diverse-environments/">adapt</a>. </p>



<p>“Scientists kept finding instances where young species are especially at risk of extinction. So we had a theory vacuum – a bunch of anomalous observations and no unified way of understanding them,” explained Dr. Saulsbury.</p>



<p>The study suggests that younger species might actually be more likely to go extinct. This is because they haven't had as much time to evolve and deal with changes in the environment. This finding supports the idea that all species have an equal chance of survival, regardless of their age.</p>



<p>More importantly, the findings aren't a complete dethronement to the Red Queen hypothesis. The researchers still acknowledge the importance of continuous adaptation in some cases.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Red Queen theory has been a compelling and important idea in the evolutionary biological community, but the data from the fossil record no longer seems to support that theory,” said Dr. Saulsbury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“But I don't think our paper really refutes this idea because, in fact, the Red Queen theory and the neutral theory are, in a deep way, pretty similar. They both present a picture of extinction happening as a result of competition between species for resources and of constant turnover in communities resulting from biological interactions."</p>



<p>The study suggests that instead of a linear race, life thrives in a web of interconnectedness, driven by diverse forces like ​​cooperation, competition, and adaptation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nature-is-like-a-lottery-nbsp">Nature is like a lottery&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study supports the idea that nature is more like a lottery than a competition. The neutral theory of biodiversity, once considered strange, suggests that all living things, from the tiniest insect to the largest whale, have an equal chance of disappearing. It's not about who's "better," but about random luck.</p>



<p>Dr. Saulsbury's work gives new life to the idea that luck, not just being the strongest or most specialized, can help species survive.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"What makes a species vulnerable to extinction? People are interested in learning from the fossil record whether it can tell us anything to help conserve species," said Dr. Saulsbury.</p>



<p>'The pessimistic side of our study is that there are ecological situations where there isn't a whole lot of predictability in the fates of species; there’s some limit to how much we can predict extinction."&nbsp;</p>



<p>"To some extent, extinction will be decided by seemingly random forces - accidents of history. There’s some support for this in paleobiological studies."</p>



<p>For instance, the extinction of dinosaurs, likely due to an asteroid impact, paved the way for mammals to take center stage. This wasn't because mammals were inherently "better," but because they just happened to be around when the dinosaurs were not.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-adaptability-and-versatility-nbsp">Adaptability and versatility&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Another example is animals living on an island, cut off from the mainland. Fewer predators and competitors let them evolve in unique ways. This "luck" can lead to amazing adaptations, like the flightless birds of Galapagos or the giant lemurs of Madagascar. These were all created by chance events like volcanic eruptions, separating them from their mainland ancestors.</p>



<p>But being in the right place isn't everything. Some species have another secret weapon: adaptability. These "generalists" aren't picky about their environment. They can eat different foods, live in different places, and handle change better than specialists. Think of a raccoon, happy in a city trash can or a forest stream. This "versatility luck" helps them survive as the world around them shifts.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet <em>Archaeopteris</em>: the first modern tree</h2>



<p>The star of this ancient forest is <em>Archaeopteris</em> – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur <em>Archaeopteryx</em>. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.</p>



<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

And that's true no matter what class of molecules you look at."</p>



<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
