<p>For half a century, black hole fireworks have lived mostly in theory. The standard picture holds that if black holes ever “explode,” it’s vanishingly rare - maybe once every 100,000 years somewhere in the universe - and far beyond our reach to witness.</p>



<p>A new analysis flips that expectation on its head. Physicists at the <a href="https://www.umass.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Massachusetts Amherst</a> argue there’s better than a nine-in-ten chance that an observable black hole outburst will occur in the next ten years. </p>



<p>The team noted that our existing array of space- and ground-based telescopes is already capable of seeing it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-holes-that-can-explode">Black holes that can explode</h2>



<p>The scenario hinges on a particular class of black hole first proposed by Stephen Hawking in 1970: <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/primordial-black-holes-may-be-shifting-earths-orbit/">primordial black holes</a> (PBHs).</p>



<p>Unlike their heavyweight cousins born from the deaths of massive stars, PBHs could have formed in the first fractions of a second after the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/if-the-big-bang-theory-is-correct-what-exactly-happened/">Big Bang</a>. During that time, extreme density ripples compressed pockets of the early universe.</p>



<p>Crucially, a PBH can be far lighter than a stellar black hole. And the lighter a black hole is, the hotter it becomes, slowly bleeding energy as particles via Hawking radiation. </p>



<p>As it shrinks, it heats up even more in a runaway process that ends in a final, brilliant outburst. This outburst is a flash of particles and high-energy light that, in principle, we can detect.</p>



<p>That last part has been the sticking point. If PBHs exist, why haven’t we seen one go off? The prevailing wisdom has been that the odds are simply too small on human timescales.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-small-twist-with-big-consequences">Small twist with big consequences</h2>



<p>The UMass Amherst team revisited one of the field’s quiet assumptions: that primordial black holes carry no electric charge. </p>



<p>In their work, they explore a “dark QED” toy model - an analog of electromagnetism that includes a very heavy, hypothetical cousin of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shape-of-electrons-revealed-first-time-through-big-advance-in-quantum-physics/">electron</a>, sometimes called a dark electron.</p>



<p>If PBHs formed with even a tiny amount of this dark electric charge, the researchers show, the charge could temporarily stabilize the black hole’s evaporation. That pause delays the finale, so more PBHs would be reaching their terminal phase now. </p>



<p>With all current experimental constraints folded in, their calculations shift the expected cadence of observable PBH explosions from “about once every hundred millennia” to “roughly once per decade.”</p>



<p>“We’re not claiming it’s guaranteed, but the probability may be as high as 90% that one occurs within the next ten years," said Baker.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-catching-an-exploding-black-hole">Catching an exploding black hole</h2>



<p>If a PBH is in its endgame, it should spew a burst of Hawking radiation: a short-lived cascade of particles and photons across a broad energy range. That signature is exactly the kind of high-energy transient today’s observatories are built to chase.</p>



<p>Space telescopes sensitive to gamma rays and X-rays, wide-field optical surveyors scanning the sky nightly, and radio arrays listening for fleeting bursts could all contribute to catching - and confirming - the event. </p>



<p>Because only lightweight primordial black holes can explode today, detecting Hawking radiation would be tantamount to detecting a PBH.</p>



<p>The team’s message is simple: prepare the observing playbook now. Coordinated triggers, rapid follow-up, and cross-checks across wavelengths could turn a single flash into a definitive detection.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-detection-would-rewrite-the-textbooks">Detection would rewrite the textbooks</h2>



<p>Seeing a PBH explode would do more than check a box next to Hawking’s most famous prediction. It would provide the first direct evidence that black holes radiate and evaporate, lifting a key idea out of the realm of theory and into observation.</p>



<p>It would also prove PBHs exist at all - and that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-capture-baby-pictures-of-the-very-early-universe-cosmic-microwave-background/">infant universe</a> could seed gravitational monsters without stars. Perhaps most tantalizing, the debris of that final flash would act like a cosmic census. </p>



<p>In principle, the particle spray encodes every constituent of nature that couples to gravity and can be thermally produced. These include familiar residents like electrons and quarks, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/higgs-boson-god-particle-still-remains-quantum-mystery-after-12-years/">Higgs boson</a>, any dark matter particles if they exist, and potentially species we’ve never seen.</p>



<p>A single well-observed event could offer a once-only inventory of the universe’s building blocks, informing everything from particle physics to cosmology.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bold-claims-big-stakes">Bold claims, big stakes</h2>



<p>Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence. The group’s “dark QED” setup is intentionally simple, and the true microphysics of any dark sector - if it exists - could differ.</p>



<p>Still, the work highlights how modest changes to long-held assumptions can dramatically alter expectations for what we might observe. </p>



<p>It also underscores an opportunity: even if the odds are lower than the headline number, the payoff of a detection is so immense that it makes sense to plan for it.</p>



<p>We already know how to look. We already have the tools. If nature obliges, the next decade could deliver a brief, brilliant flash that confirms Hawking radiation, reveals <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/directly-detecting-dark-matter-primordial-black-holes-simple-as-monitoring-mars-orbit/">primordial black holes</a>, and hands physicists a ledger of the universe’s particles - all in one cosmic firework.</p>

<p>“A key ingredient of a useful quantum simulator is the possibility to control or manipulate it,” Chepiga illustrates. Without this capability, a quantum simulator's utility is severely limited. </p>



<p>To address this, Chepiga proposes a novel protocol in her paper, likening it to creating a steering wheel for quantum simulators. </p>



<p>This protocol is essentially a blueprint for constructing a fully controllable quantum simulator that can unlock new <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-ping-pong-game-played-by-two-atoms-controlling-photons/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">physics phenomena</a>.</p>

<p>A recent study akin to the precision of stop-motion cinematography, scientists have achieved a monumental feat in the realm of chemistry and physics by capturing the swift movement of an electron, while simultaneously halting the motion of the larger atom it orbits within a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/water-molecule-discovery-will-force-textbooks-to-be-rewritten/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">liquid water</a> sample. </p>



<p>This pioneering experiment unveils a novel perspective on the electronic structure of molecules in their liquid state, traversing time scales that were once deemed unreachable through conventional X-ray methods.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-time-barriers-the-attosecond-breakthrough">Time barriers: The attosecond breakthrough</h2>



<p>The essence of this research lies in its ability to observe the immediate electronic reactions following the impact of an X-ray on a target. This observation is crucial for comprehending the ramifications of radiation exposure on various objects and, more importantly, on human health.</p>



<p>“The chemical reactions induced by radiation that we want to study are the result of the electronic response of the target that happens on the attosecond timescale,” said Linda Young, a senior author of the research and Distinguished Fellow at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.anl.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Argonne National Laboratory</a>. </p>



<p>“Until now radiation chemists could only resolve events at the picosecond timescale, a million times slower than an attosecond. It’s kind of like saying ‘I was born and then I died.’ You’d like to know what happens in between. That’s what we are now able to do.”</p>



<p>This research was made possible through a collaborative effort involving scientists from several Department of Energy national laboratories and universities across the U.S. and Germany. </p>



<p>These researchers united their expertise in both experimental and theoretical domains to unravel the intricate processes that ensue when ionizing radiation from an X-ray source interacts with matter.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-concept-to-reality-the-power-of-collaboration">Concept to reality: The power of collaboration</h2>



<p>One of the primary motivations behind this collective endeavor was to delve deeper into the complex chemistry induced by radiation, particularly concerning the long-term effects of ionizing radiation on the chemicals found in nuclear waste. </p>



<p>The project received support from the Interfacial Dynamics in Radioactive Environments and Materials (<a href="https://www.pnnl.gov/projects/interfacial-dynamics-radioactive-environments-and-materials" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IDREAM</a>) Energy Frontier Research Center, sponsored by the Department of Energy and based at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (<a href="https://www.pnnl.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PNNL</a>).</p>



<p><a href="https://www.pnnl.gov/experts/carolyn-pearce-phd" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Carolyn Pearce</a>, director of IDREAM EFRC and a chemist at PNNL, highlighted the integral role of collaboration in this achievement. </p>



<p>“Members of our early-career network participated in the experiment, and then joined our full experimental and theoretical teams to analyze and understand the data,” she stated. "We couldn’t have done this without the IDREAM partnerships."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-lens-on-liquid-life-the-water-experiment">New lens on liquid life: The water experiment</h2>



<p>The experimental technique employed, known as X-ray attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy in liquids, enables scientists to observe electrons being energized by X-rays and transitioning to an excited state before the atomic nucleus can react. </p>



<p>Liquid water was chosen for this experiment due to its fundamental importance in both biological and chemical processes.</p>



<p>This advancement not only resolves a longstanding scientific debate regarding the interpretation of X-ray signals in previous experiments but also opens new avenues in attosecond science -- a field that has recently been recognized with the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glimpse-into-atomic-choreography">Glimpse into atomic choreography</h2>



<p>This domain of study requires the use of attosecond X-ray pulses, a resource available at only a few specialized facilities globally, including the Linac Coherent Light Source (<a href="https://lcls.slac.stanford.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LCLS</a>) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, where this experiment was conducted.</p>



<p>“Attosecond time-resolved experiments are one of the flagship R&amp;D developments at the Linac Coherent Light Source,” said Ago Marinelli from the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.</p>



<p>Together with James Cryan, Marinelli led the development of the synchronized pair of X-ray attosecond pump/probe pulses that this experiment used. </p>



<p>“It’s exciting to see these developments being applied to new kinds of experiments and taking attosecond science into new directions," Marinelli said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-water-and-electrons-launch-a-new-era-in-attosecond-science">Water and electrons launch a new era in attosecond science</h2>



<p>The researchers see this study as the launchpad for an entirely new trajectory in attosecond science.</p>



<p>PNNL experimental chemists, Argonne and the University of Chicago physicists, SLAC's X-ray spectroscopy experts and accelerator physicists, the University of Washington's theoretical chemists, and attosecond science theorists from the Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging and the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (<a href="https://www.desy.de/research/cooperations__institutes/cfel/index_eng.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CFEL</a>) at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (<a href="https://www.desy.de/research/cooperations__institutes/cfel/index_eng.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DESY</a>) in Hamburg, Germany, all collaborated to make this discovery.</p>



<p>Throughout the global pandemic, in 2021 and into 2022, the PNNL team employed techniques SLAC developed to spray an ultra-thin water sheet across the X-ray pump pulse path.</p>



<p>Emily Nienhuis, an early-career chemist at PNNL who initiated the project as a post-doctoral research associate, said, “We needed a nice, flat, thin sheet of water to focus the X-rays on. The LCLS developed this capability.” </p>



<p>Nienhuis also showed that PNNL could use this technique to study specific concentrated solutions critical to the IDREAM EFRC, which they will examine in the research's next phase.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deciphering-the-quantum-code">Deciphering the quantum code</h2>



<p>After collecting the X-ray data, Xiaosong Li, a theoretical chemist, and Lixin Lu, a graduate student from the <a href="https://www.washington.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Washington</a>, applied their expertise in interpreting X-ray signals to replicate the signals observed at SLAC. </p>



<p>The CFEL team, under the leadership of theoretician Robin Santra, modeled the liquid water's response to attosecond X-rays, confirming that the signal was indeed within the attosecond timescale.</p>



<p>“Using the Hyak supercomputer at the University of Washington, we developed a cutting-edge computational chemistry technique that enabled detailed characterization of the transient high-energy <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-realm-controlled-at-room-temperature-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum</a> states in water,” said Li, the Larry R. Dalton Endowed Chair in Chemistry at the University of Washington and a Laboratory Fellow at PNNL. </p>



<p>“This methodological breakthrough yielded a pivotal advancement in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-entanglement-discovery-is-a-revolutionary-step-forward/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum</a>-level understanding of ultrafast chemical transformation, with exceptional accuracy and atomic-level detail.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-radiation-research-from-space-to-medicine">Future of radiation research: From space to medicine</h2>



<p>Principal Investigator Young conceptualized and oversaw the study, with on-site leadership by first author and postdoc Shuai Li. </p>



<p>Physicist Gilles Doumy from Argonne and Kai Li, a graduate student from the <a href="https://www.uchicago.edu/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Chicago</a>, were integral in conducting the experiments and analyzing the data. </p>



<p>The research team managed to capture a glimpse of electrons' real-time movement in liquid water, offering a unique perspective while the rest of the world paused.</p>



<p><strong><em>“</em></strong>The methodology we developed permits the study of the origin and evolution of reactive species produced by radiation-induced processes, such as encountered in space travel, cancer treatments, nuclear reactors and legacy waste,” said Young.</p>

<p>Data traffic is increasing at a rapid pace, and this necessitates the development of smaller optical transmitters and receivers capable of high-order multi-level modulation and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-computer-can-instantly-execute-a-task-that-would-normally-take-47-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">faster data</a> transmission rates. </p>



<p>Addressing this need, researchers have created a new compact indium phosphide (InP)-based coherent driver modulator (CDM) that surpasses others in terms of baud rate and transmission capacity per wavelength.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionizing-optical-data-transmission">Revolutionizing optical data transmission</h2>



<p>CDMs are crucial components of optical communication systems as they encode information onto light by modulating its amplitude and phase before transmission through optical fibers.</p>



<p>Josuke Ozaki from <a href="https://www.ntt-innovative-devices.com/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NTT Innovative Devices Corporation</a> in Japan emphasizes the importance of optical transmission systems with increased data rates in enabling services like video distribution and web conferencing. </p>



<p>“Services that require data capacity, such as video distribution and web conferencing services, have become widespread, and services that more enrich our lives are expected to be introduced in the future,” said Ozaki.</p>



<p>The lack of sufficient optical transmission capacity poses challenges in realizing new convenient services and building a data-driven society.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-astounding-potential-of-new-optical-transmitter">Astounding potential of new optical transmitter</h2>



<p>An additional benefit of the development of an optical transmitter that covers the C+L band in a single module is the promotion of flexible network operation and reduced equipment costs.</p>



<p>Ozaki will present these impressive results at <a href="https://www.ofcconference.org/en-us/home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OFC</a>, a premier global event for optical communications and networking scheduled to take place as a hybrid event from 24 – 28 March 2024 at the San Diego Convention Center.</p>



<p>The baud rate, which denotes the number of signal changes occurring in a communication channel per second, serves as a measure of data transmission speed. </p>



<p>Higher baud rates require increased bandwidth for each modulation signal, resulting in fewer channels transmitted in the conventional C-band. </p>



<p>Therefore, extending the wavelength bandwidth from the C-band to the L-band, collectively known as the C+L band, becomes imperative.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inp-modulator-chip-enables-high-speed-data-transmission">InP modulator chip enables high-speed data transmission</h2>



<p>Modulators made from the InP semiconductor exhibit excellent optical and radio frequency characteristics. </p>



<p>However, these modulators have faced challenges in extending their wavelength range due to strong wavelength dependence. </p>



<p>Researchers have overcome this obstacle by developing an innovative InP modulator chip featuring an optimized semiconductor layer and waveguide structure capable of operating over a wide range. </p>



<p>Utilizing this novel modulator chip, they achieved the world's first CDM with an InP modulator chip that can transmit in the C+L band. Remarkably, the package body measures just 11.9 × 29.8 × 4.35 mm³.</p>



<p>Operating in the C+L band, the new CDM exhibited an electro-optic 3-dB bandwidth exceeding 90 GHz, insertion loss at maximum transmission below 8 dB, and an extinction ratio of 28 dB or more.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unveiling-the-power-of-inp-modulator-chips">Unveiling the power of InP modulator chips</h2>



<p>To demonstrate the capabilities of the new CDM, researchers conducted experiments using 180 Gbaud probabilistically constellation-shaped 144-level quadrature amplitude modulation (PCS-144QAM) signals. </p>



<p>The results were astonishing, with a net bit rate of 1.8 Tbps (terabytes per second) achieved over an 80-kilometer standard single-mode fiber in the C+L band. </p>



<p>This marks the first demonstration of an InP-based CDM operating in the C+L bands and sets a world record for transmission capacity per wavelength in a CDM.</p>



<p>Alpha samples of the CDM are now ready for shipping from the NTT Innovative Devices Corporation.</p>



<p>According to Ozaki, the next step is to further increase the baud rate to achieve even higher transmission speeds. </p>



<p>To accomplish this, new modulator structures and assembly configurations, including a driver die and package, must be developed to achieve higher electro-optic bandwidth while <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/artificial-intelligence-applications-can-use-as-much-power-as-entire-nations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reducing power consumption</a> and form factor.</p>

<p>Wildfires tell a grim story of how humans are pushing the planet beyond its limits. Shockingly, the fires scar more than landscapes - they leave an unseen toll on our mental health.</p>



<p>A new study by <a href="https://www.emory.edu/home/index.html">Emory University</a> reveals the significant and lasting impact that wildfires have on people's lives.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-emergency-department-visits">Emergency department visits</h2>



<p>Researchers looked at nearly 1.9 million visits to emergency departments across the United States between 2007 and 2018. This data was then analyzed alongside satellite information on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfire-smoke-is-an-underestimated-threat-to-public-health/">wildfire smoke</a>, making it one of the most detailed examinations of its kind.</p>



<p>The researchers found a significant correlation between exposure to wildfire smoke and a 6.3% increase in emergency department visits for anxiety-related issues.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-psychological-impact">Psychological Impact</h2>



<p>Women, girls, and older adults were more likely to visit the emergency department for anxiety problems during wildfires. This increased need for aid could be attributed to a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors.</p>



<p>Women and girls experience hormonal fluctuations throughout their lives, which might make them more susceptible to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/teachers-experienced-high-anxiety-during-the-pandemic/">anxiety</a> in general. Additionally, pre-existing biological conditions affecting the stress response system could play a role.</p>



<p>Older adults are more likely to have pre-existing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/poor-nutrition-leads-to-poor-mental-health/">mental health conditions</a> that exacerbate stress responses and anxiety symptoms. Additionally, facing the potential loss of possessions, home, or even independence during wildfires can have a significant psychological impact on all age groups.</p>



<p>Even though boys and men also feel more anxious during wildfires, the study suggests they are less impacted than women and girls. This might be because they deal with anxiety differently, what society expects of them, or even how their bodies react to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/petting-dogs-and-cats-dramatically-reduces-stress/">stress</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications">Broader implications</h2>



<p>“Mental health is one of the most prevalent health conditions in the U.S. and our study found multiple pathways between wildfires and an association with severe anxiety disorders," said study lead author Dr. Qingyang Zhu from the Gangarosa Department of Environmental Health.</p>



<p>"Many people are already dealing with some mild or moderate mental health symptoms. Now imagine they wake up and see the sky covered in smoke, they’re likely going to feel even more anxious."</p>

<p>In the past 20 years, Earth's temperature has risen, and rainfall patterns have changed. This makes wildfires much more likely. In places like the western US, which already have a lot of fires because of its climate, droughts, and plenty of flammable material, the fires tend to be bigger and burn for longer.</p>



<p>The number of people with mental health problems has been rising for 30 years, with anxiety becoming a major health concern globally. This underscores the critical need for healthcare responses that address not just the physical damage from climate disasters but also the deep psychological effects.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-prioritize-your-safety-nbsp">Prioritize your safety&nbsp;</h2>

<p>"The scary thing about climate change is it doesn't have a clear boundary; you fear a lot about the unknown. Now we can use the knowledge we've gained to tell people there is no need to panic," said study co-author Dr. Yang Liu of the Gangarosa Department of Environmental Health.</p>



<p>"When you receive a wildfire smoke alert, close your windows, limit your outdoor activities, and don't panic. Those sorts of preventative measures can potentially benefit the entire population."&nbsp;</p>

More serrations mean they'll have higher resilience to cold, for example. And broader, smoother leaves can mean that they'll be better at surviving in warmer places."</p>

<p>Finnish researchers have explored a captivating idea. Could the stunning Northern Lights (auroras) reveal more than just beauty? Could they hold clues about how much <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cities-need-resilient-electricity-networks-to-cope-with-climate-change/">electricity</a> we use?</p>



<p>The investigation, led by the <a href="https://www.oulu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oulu</a>, has uncovered a surprising link between auroras and winter temperatures. </p>



<p>This unique study investigates how activity in Earth's atmosphere, which generates auroras, affects the amount of electricity Finland uses during winter. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-space-weather">Studying space weather</h2>



<p>The researchers analyzed information about air pressure, wind patterns, and surface <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-temperatures-linked-to-vision-impairment/">temperatures</a> from Europe's weather center (ECMWF) for the period 1950-2021.</p>



<p>Later, the team analyzed the amount of electricity Finland used each month between 1990 and 2021, and estimated values for earlier years based on temperature data.</p>



<p>"From these data, we had to carefully remove variations unrelated to temperatures. This then revealed the influence of particle precipitation on temperature and electricity consumption," said Veera Juntunen, a doctoral researcher at the University of Oulu.</p>



<p>Initially, the researchers focused on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/space-weather-poses-significant-risks-to-railway-safety/">space weather</a>. While Earth has its own weather, space experiences its own set of dynamic events. Just like on Earth, these events aren't random - they're largely driven by the Sun's activity.</p>



<p>For example, when the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/amaterasu-extremely-high-energy-cosmic-ray-detected-with-no-clear-source/">Sun</a> experiences intense activity, it can emit a surge of energetic particles in space. These may collide with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/communications-satellites-may-disrupt-astronomical-observations/">satellites</a> and affect our internet connections.</p>



<p>The phenomenon is known as energetic particle precipitation (EPP) and it plays a role in the creation of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-solar-wind-which-creates-beautiful-auroras-on-earth-is-now-less-mysterious/">auroras</a> too.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-auroras-and-electricity-a-cosmic-connection">Auroras and electricity: A cosmic connection</h2>



<p>Auroras happen when charged particles from the Sun (carried by the solar wind) collide with gases in Earth's atmosphere and react with its magnetic field. These collisions release energy as light, creating the beautiful displays.</p>



<p>For a long time, we knew this activity could create beautiful auroras, but this study found something new: it can also warm up Finland's winters. This happens because the charged particles interact with our atmosphere in multiple ways.</p>



<p>Warmer winters mean less need for heating, which means lower energy use in Finland. So, the sun throwing its particles, creating auroras, can actually affect how much electricity people use on Earth.</p>



<p>The study explains that EPP can intensify the polar vortex, which is a strong wind pattern that typically circulates around the polar region&nbsp;</p>



<p>When the wind blows from the east, these warm patches from the sun have an even bigger effect on Finland, making its winters much warmer.&nbsp;</p>



<p>That's why scientists concluded - it depends on a specific wind pattern we didn't know about before. So, space weather and wind work together to influence how warm (and how much electricity Finland needs) in winter.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-harsh-weather-conditions">Harsh weather conditions</h2>



<p>The researchers found that the polar vortex "broke" once already this winter. This "breaking" means the cold air spread out in unexpected ways, potentially impacting weather patterns.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts predict this will happen again soon, this weekend specifically. It's impressive that their models even hinted at this possibility months ago.</p>



<p>Breaking of the polar vortex can lead to colder temperatures in areas like Europe and North America. This happens because the weakening allows cold Arctic air to escape southward.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Such weakening is often linked to cold spells and harsh winter weather in these regions.</p>



<p>The researchers found several critical links. The way the Sun interacts with Earth's atmosphere, especially how it sends energetic particles down, can directly affect how much electricity we use in winter. </p>



<p>For Finland, this "space weather" can explain about 14% of how much electricity they use – that's pretty significant.</p>



<p>By understanding how space weather affects winter weather, scientists can potentially predict how much electricity we'll need ahead of time. This could help energy companies prepare and make sure everyone has enough power during cold months.</p>



<p>"The results demonstrate a previously unrecognized societal influence of space weather, and imply that long-term energy consumption forecasts could potentially be improved by considering long-term space weather predictions," wrote the study authors.</p>

<p>"We are the first to use telemetric devices to record neural activity from multiple cortical populations in the visual and prefrontal cortex while animals explore their environment and interact with one another," said Professor Valentin Dragoi.</p>



<p>"Until now, we didn't know how what we are looking at guides our decision to cooperate or not, because of our inability to measure oculomotor events and correlate them with what neurons are doing in that instant. Because the technology was not there, that knowledge was just unattainable."</p>

<p>The study marks a significant departure from traditional neuroscience research, which typically involves restrained animals responding to artificial stimuli in isolation.</p>

<p>"This has been the golden dream of neuroscientists for a long time -- to record from neurons on the fly while the animal is free-moving," said Professor Dragoi.</p>



<p>"We tracked populations of neurons in the visual cortex -- the part of the brain that extracts information about vision -- and the prefrontal cortex -- an executive area that encodes our decision to carry out certain actions."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-active-versus-passive-vision">Active versus passive vision</h2>



<p>The experimental setup involved pairs of macaques learning to cooperate to obtain a food reward. Their progress and interactions were closely monitored over several weeks as they learned to work together for food reward.</p>



<p>Previously, the monkeys had been taught to press a button to gain access to a snack tray. But during the trials, the pairs of monkeys could only gain access to snack trays when they pressed the button simultaneously.</p>



<p>The experts observed an increase in the frequency of socially relevant cues, such as eye contact and body positioning, prior to successful cooperative actions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This understanding of active versus passive vision underscores the significance of purpose-driven visual engagement in social interactions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-significance-nbsp">Study significance&nbsp;</h2>



<p>"This technology allows us to differentiate between active and passive vision," said Professor Dragoi. "Active vision is when we act on a stimulus we're looking at with a purpose in mind. <p>"Our main finding is getting to see how sensory neuron populations extract information, transmit it to an executive area and how they synchronize in real time to underlie the decision to cooperate."</p>

<p>“The modeling is about how viruses may dial up or dial down microbial activity in the system,” Sullivan said. </p>



<p>“Community metabolic modeling is telling me the dream data point: which viruses are targeting the most important metabolic pathways, and that matters because it means they’re good levers to pull on.”</p>



<p>As the virus coordinator for the <a href="https://oceans.taraexpeditions.org/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tara Oceans Consortium</a>, Sullivan has played a pivotal role in this three-year global study examining climate change's impact on the world's oceans. </p>

<p>His lab's focus on phages, viruses that infect bacteria, aims to leverage these microbes in converting carbon into a form that sinks to the ocean floor, thus strengthening the ocean's role as a carbon sink.</p>



<p>This approach builds on the 2016 discovery by the Tara team that carbon sinking in the ocean is facilitated by viruses. </p>



<p>By causing virus-infected cells to cluster into larger aggregates, carbon is more efficiently deposited on the ocean floor. </p>



<p>The team's AI-based analytics have identified "VIP" viruses for further study and potential use in ocean geoengineering efforts.</p>

<p>"There is little investigation of vocal recognition in exotic cats despite their prevalence in human care. The current study extends this research to 25 individuals of 10 non-domesticated felid species housed in human care," wrote the study authors.</p>



<p>"The cat family, or Felidae, are of interest given their relatively asocial natural history coupled with their close association with humans in modern society."</p>



<p>The researchers designed experiments to study the extent to which the animals could recognize and distinguish between the voices of their human caregivers.</p>



<p>The experts found that the cats showed a quicker, more intense, and prolonged response to voices they recognized, indicating a clear ability to discriminate familiar sounds from those of strangers.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This was observed regardless of whether the cats were called by their names or their rearing histories, pointing to an innate ability rather than one solely shaped by individual experiences.</p>

This study adds to the growing body of work showing that even non-domestic cats are not indifferent to familiar humans and may help dispel the notion that cats are aloof."</p>

<p>Life on Earth unfolds at wildly different speeds. Towering trees live for centuries, while mayflies die young.</p>



<p>Considering this, scientists at the <a href="https://www.senckenberg.de/en/institutes/sbik-f/">Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre</a> set out to understand how different living creatures experience time.</p>



<p>The "slow-fast continuum of life" shows incredible variation and reveals how life has adapted over time. Studying this framework sheds light on individual species, and also on how whole <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atmospheric-dust-plays-surprisingly-crucial-role-in-stabilizing-ocean-ecosystems/">ecosystems</a> work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-research">Focus of the research</h2>



<p>The scientists looked at 2,800 different living things (from tiny microbes to big <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/evolutionary-mystery-why-are-mammals-the-only-vertebrates-to-have-only-one-lower-jawbone/">mammals</a>) across 14 groups.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"We examined organisms from all areas of the sampled ecosystems - from microorganisms in the soil to plants, butterflies, and other arthropods, to birds and bats," explained study co-author Dr. Margot Neyret from the <a href="https://www.univ-grenoble-alpes.fr/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Grenoble Alpes</a>.</p>



<p>The researchers gathered information on how long the organisms live, how fast they grow, how often they <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/elephant-seals-prioritize-survival-over-reproduction/">reproduce</a>, and how much they contribute to the environment (like turning dead leaves into soil).</p>



<p>By crunching all this data, the experts created a map showing how long each creature lives. This helped the scientists understand how different living things change their life strategies based on where they live and their surroundings.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-slow-fast-continuum-of-living-creatures">Slow-fast continuum of living creatures</h2>



<p>By looking at the different organisms, the researchers discovered a consistent pattern. No matter where they lived or what they ate, all of the creatures could be placed on a spectrum ranging from slow-living (they had long lifespans and slow reproduction) to fast-living (short lifespans and frequent reproduction).</p>



<p>It’s more like a sliding scale - on one end, there are “slow livers” like tortoises that live for decades and rarely reproduce.&nbsp;On the other end, there are insects buzzing through life in mere months, having tons of babies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Most living creatures fall somewhere in between, adapting their growth, reproduction, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breathing-less-oxygen-could-extend-your-lifespan-by-50-or-more/">lifespan</a> to their environment.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-interventions">Human interventions</h2>



<p>The study also revealed that dramatic alterations in nature’s landscapes, such as through intensive farming, mainly hurt creatures who live slowly. These creatures take longer to grow up and have fewer babies. They are not “quick” at adjusting.</p>



<p>The findings indicate that faster-living creatures, who can adjust quickly, take over and become dominant. However, they might not have as much diversity. The shift towards fast life makes nature less varied, which could hurt its ability to bounce back from imbalances.</p>



<p>"You can visualize this like the fable of the hare and the tortoise- except that, depending on the environment, the 'race' is sometimes 'won' by organisms with one strategy and sometimes by those following the other," said study lead author Dr. Peter Manning.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-balance-is-necessary">Balance is necessary</h2>



<p>Healthy ecosystems need variety. When both slow and fast creatures live together, they handle variations like climate or landscape changes better.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>

<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>

<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>

<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
