<p>For half a century, black hole fireworks have lived mostly in theory. The standard picture holds that if black holes ever “explode,” it’s vanishingly rare - maybe once every 100,000 years somewhere in the universe - and far beyond our reach to witness.</p>



<p>A new analysis flips that expectation on its head. Physicists at the <a href="https://www.umass.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Massachusetts Amherst</a> argue there’s better than a nine-in-ten chance that an observable black hole outburst will occur in the next ten years. </p>



<p>The team noted that our existing array of space- and ground-based telescopes is already capable of seeing it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-holes-that-can-explode">Black holes that can explode</h2>



<p>The scenario hinges on a particular class of black hole first proposed by Stephen Hawking in 1970: <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/primordial-black-holes-may-be-shifting-earths-orbit/">primordial black holes</a> (PBHs).</p>



<p>Unlike their heavyweight cousins born from the deaths of massive stars, PBHs could have formed in the first fractions of a second after the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/if-the-big-bang-theory-is-correct-what-exactly-happened/">Big Bang</a>. During that time, extreme density ripples compressed pockets of the early universe.</p>



<p>Crucially, a PBH can be far lighter than a stellar black hole. And the lighter a black hole is, the hotter it becomes, slowly bleeding energy as particles via Hawking radiation. </p>



<p>As it shrinks, it heats up even more in a runaway process that ends in a final, brilliant outburst. This outburst is a flash of particles and high-energy light that, in principle, we can detect.</p>



<p>That last part has been the sticking point. If PBHs exist, why haven’t we seen one go off? The prevailing wisdom has been that the odds are simply too small on human timescales.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-small-twist-with-big-consequences">Small twist with big consequences</h2>



<p>The UMass Amherst team revisited one of the field’s quiet assumptions: that primordial black holes carry no electric charge. </p>



<p>In their work, they explore a “dark QED” toy model - an analog of electromagnetism that includes a very heavy, hypothetical cousin of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shape-of-electrons-revealed-first-time-through-big-advance-in-quantum-physics/">electron</a>, sometimes called a dark electron.</p>



<p>If PBHs formed with even a tiny amount of this dark electric charge, the researchers show, the charge could temporarily stabilize the black hole’s evaporation. That pause delays the finale, so more PBHs would be reaching their terminal phase now. </p>



<p>With all current experimental constraints folded in, their calculations shift the expected cadence of observable PBH explosions from “about once every hundred millennia” to “roughly once per decade.”</p>



<p>“We’re not claiming it’s guaranteed, but the probability may be as high as 90% that one occurs within the next ten years," said Baker.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-catching-an-exploding-black-hole">Catching an exploding black hole</h2>



<p>If a PBH is in its endgame, it should spew a burst of Hawking radiation: a short-lived cascade of particles and photons across a broad energy range. That signature is exactly the kind of high-energy transient today’s observatories are built to chase.</p>



<p>Space telescopes sensitive to gamma rays and X-rays, wide-field optical surveyors scanning the sky nightly, and radio arrays listening for fleeting bursts could all contribute to catching - and confirming - the event. </p>



<p>Because only lightweight primordial black holes can explode today, detecting Hawking radiation would be tantamount to detecting a PBH.</p>



<p>The team’s message is simple: prepare the observing playbook now. Coordinated triggers, rapid follow-up, and cross-checks across wavelengths could turn a single flash into a definitive detection.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-detection-would-rewrite-the-textbooks">Detection would rewrite the textbooks</h2>



<p>Seeing a PBH explode would do more than check a box next to Hawking’s most famous prediction. It would provide the first direct evidence that black holes radiate and evaporate, lifting a key idea out of the realm of theory and into observation.</p>



<p>It would also prove PBHs exist at all - and that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-capture-baby-pictures-of-the-very-early-universe-cosmic-microwave-background/">infant universe</a> could seed gravitational monsters without stars. Perhaps most tantalizing, the debris of that final flash would act like a cosmic census. </p>



<p>In principle, the particle spray encodes every constituent of nature that couples to gravity and can be thermally produced. These include familiar residents like electrons and quarks, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/higgs-boson-god-particle-still-remains-quantum-mystery-after-12-years/">Higgs boson</a>, any dark matter particles if they exist, and potentially species we’ve never seen.</p>



<p>A single well-observed event could offer a once-only inventory of the universe’s building blocks, informing everything from particle physics to cosmology.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bold-claims-big-stakes">Bold claims, big stakes</h2>



<p>Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence. The group’s “dark QED” setup is intentionally simple, and the true microphysics of any dark sector - if it exists - could differ.</p>



<p>Still, the work highlights how modest changes to long-held assumptions can dramatically alter expectations for what we might observe. </p>



<p>It also underscores an opportunity: even if the odds are lower than the headline number, the payoff of a detection is so immense that it makes sense to plan for it.</p>



<p>We already know how to look. We already have the tools. If nature obliges, the next decade could deliver a brief, brilliant flash that confirms Hawking radiation, reveals <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/directly-detecting-dark-matter-primordial-black-holes-simple-as-monitoring-mars-orbit/">primordial black holes</a>, and hands physicists a ledger of the universe’s particles - all in one cosmic firework.</p>

<p>A research team led by Professor Jennifer Vonk and graduate student Taylor Crews set out to investigate the voice recognition abilities among Felidae, a family that includes exotic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/free-ranging-cats-are-one-of-the-most-problematic-invasive-species/">cats</a> such as Bengal, Savannah and Serval <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/declawing-large-cats-is-a-cruel-practice-with-shocking-impacts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cats</a>, along with lions, tigers, and cheetahs.</p>

<p>"There is little investigation of vocal recognition in exotic cats despite their prevalence in human care. The current study extends this research to 25 individuals of 10 non-domesticated felid species housed in human care," wrote the study authors.</p>



<p>"The cat family, or Felidae, are of interest given their relatively asocial natural history coupled with their close association with humans in modern society."</p>



<p>The researchers designed experiments to study the extent to which the animals could recognize and distinguish between the voices of their human caregivers.</p>



<p>The experts found that the cats showed a quicker, more intense, and prolonged response to voices they recognized, indicating a clear ability to discriminate familiar sounds from those of strangers.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This was observed regardless of whether the cats were called by their names or their rearing histories, pointing to an innate ability rather than one solely shaped by individual experiences.</p>

<p>"Exposure to humans may promote the development of abilities that researchers would not be able to observe in the wild, such as the ability of cats to discriminate familiar human voices. This study adds to the growing body of work showing that even non-domestic cats are not indifferent to familiar humans and may help dispel the notion that cats are aloof."</p>

<p>Considering this, scientists at the <a href="https://www.senckenberg.de/en/institutes/sbik-f/">Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre</a> set out to understand how different living creatures experience time.</p>



<p>The "slow-fast continuum of life" shows incredible variation and reveals how life has adapted over time. Studying this framework sheds light on individual species, and also on how whole <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atmospheric-dust-plays-surprisingly-crucial-role-in-stabilizing-ocean-ecosystems/">ecosystems</a> work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-research">Focus of the research</h2>



<p>The scientists looked at 2,800 different living things (from tiny microbes to big <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/evolutionary-mystery-why-are-mammals-the-only-vertebrates-to-have-only-one-lower-jawbone/">mammals</a>) across 14 groups.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"We examined organisms from all areas of the sampled ecosystems - from microorganisms in the soil to plants, butterflies, and other arthropods, to birds and bats," explained study co-author Dr. Margot Neyret from the <a href="https://www.univ-grenoble-alpes.fr/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Grenoble Alpes</a>.</p>



<p>The researchers gathered information on how long the organisms live, how fast they grow, how often they <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/elephant-seals-prioritize-survival-over-reproduction/">reproduce</a>, and how much they contribute to the environment (like turning dead leaves into soil).</p>



<p>By crunching all this data, the experts created a map showing how long each creature lives. This helped the scientists understand how different living things change their life strategies based on where they live and their surroundings.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-slow-fast-continuum-of-living-creatures">Slow-fast continuum of living creatures</h2>



<p>By looking at the different organisms, the researchers discovered a consistent pattern. No matter where they lived or what they ate, all of the creatures could be placed on a spectrum ranging from slow-living (they had long lifespans and slow reproduction) to fast-living (short lifespans and frequent reproduction).</p>



<p>It’s more like a sliding scale - on one end, there are “slow livers” like tortoises that live for decades and rarely reproduce.&nbsp;On the other end, there are insects buzzing through life in mere months, having tons of babies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Most living creatures fall somewhere in between, adapting their growth, reproduction, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breathing-less-oxygen-could-extend-your-lifespan-by-50-or-more/">lifespan</a> to their environment.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-interventions">Human interventions</h2>



<p>The study also revealed that dramatic alterations in nature’s landscapes, such as through intensive farming, mainly hurt creatures who live slowly. These creatures take longer to grow up and have fewer babies. They are not “quick” at adjusting.</p>



<p>The findings indicate that faster-living creatures, who can adjust quickly, take over and become dominant. However, they might not have as much diversity. The shift towards fast life makes nature less varied, which could hurt its ability to bounce back from imbalances.</p>



<p>"You can visualize this like the fable of the hare and the tortoise- except that, depending on the environment, the 'race' is sometimes 'won' by organisms with one strategy and sometimes by those following the other," said study lead author Dr. Peter Manning.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-balance-is-necessary">Balance is necessary</h2>



<p>Healthy ecosystems need variety. When both slow and fast creatures live together, they handle variations like climate or landscape changes better.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Recent stone tool discoveries are prompting a reassessment of the cultural evolution of <em>Homo sapiens</em> during their spread across Eurasia around 50,000 to 40,000 years ago. </p>



<p>This research, from a study led by the <a href="https://www.num.nagoya-u.ac.jp/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nagoya University Museum</a> in Japan, challenges the prevailing view of a swift cultural and technological 'revolution' that enabled modern humans to surpass <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-and-neanderthals-may-belong-to-the-same-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neanderthals</a> and other archaic human species. </p>



<p>Instead, it suggests a more intricate and gradual process of cultural evolution.</p>

<p>The study zeroes in on the Middle-Upper Paleolithic (MP-UP) cultural transition, delineating an important juncture between two pivotal evolutionary phases. </p>



<p>During the Middle Paleolithic era, spanning from 250,000 to 40,000 years ago, anatomically modern humans <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neanderthals-and-humans-lived-side-by-side-45000-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coexisted with Neanderthals</a>, sharing similar stone tool technologies. </p>



<p>This period was characterized by the use of 'Levallois methods,' a technique involving the crafting of tools by striking stones with a hammer-like tool.</p>



<p>Transitioning into the Upper Paleolithic era, between 50,000 and 12,000 years ago, marked a significant evolutionary leap. </p>



<p>This era witnessed the extensive geographic expansion of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neanderthals-and-humans-lived-side-by-side-45000-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">modern humans</a> and the extinction of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/homo-naledi-may-have-been-the-first-to-bury-their-dead-200000-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">archaic human species</a>. </p>



<p>It was also a time of cultural blossoming, evidenced by advancements in tool technology, food acquisition strategies, seafaring, and the emergence of artistic expressions through ornaments and cave art.</p>



<p>The traditional academic stance posited the MP-UP transition as a sudden shift, driven by revolutionary cultural advancements, including a speculated neural mutation in <em><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earliest-human-footprints-ever-found-are-believed-to-be-300000-years-old/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Homo sapiens</a></em> that boosted cognitive abilities. </p>



<p>This leap was thought to have given them a definitive edge over other species, leading to the demise of Neanderthals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stone-tools-give-insights-into-human-evolution">Stone tools give insights into human evolution</h2>



<p>However, the Nagoya University team's research paints a different picture.</p>



<p>They <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/stone-tool_innovation_graphic_credit-Reiko-Matsushita_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">analyzed the efficiency of stone tools</a> across a 50,000-year timeline that covered six cultural phases from the Late Middle Paleolithic through the Upper Paleolithic to the Epipaleolithic period.</p>



<p>Their analysis found that the significant leap in tool-making productivity did not occur at the onset of <em><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/modern-humans-almost-went-extinct-as-population-declined-to-1280-individuals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Homo sapiens</a></em>' dispersal in Eurasia. </p>



<p>Instead, it took place later, alongside the development of bladelet technology in the Early Upper Paleolithic era.</p>



<p>This discovery indicates that the cultural evolution from the Middle to Upper Paleolithic was not marked by a single, abrupt revolution but was a complex, multi-staged process. </p>



<p>Professor Seiji Kadowaki, the lead researcher, emphasizes the nuanced nature of this transition.</p>



<p>He said, "In terms of cutting-edge productivity, Homo sapiens did not start to spread to Eurasia after a quick revolution in stone tool technology, but rather the innovation in the ‘cutting-edge’ productivity occurred later, in tandem with the miniaturization of stone tools like bladelets."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deeper-understanding-of-our-ancestors">Deeper understanding of our ancestors</h2>



<p>In summary, this study reveals a nuanced view of <em>Homo sapiens</em>' cultural evolution during their Eurasian expansion around 50,000 to 40,000 years ago. </p>

<p>By analyzing stone tool productivity over thousands of years, the researchers challenge the notion of an abrupt cultural shift, instead proposing a multi-staged evolution characterized by later innovations in tool-making. </p>

<p>American adults living alone have a significantly greater risk of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/skateboarding-alleviates-depression-and-increases-well-being/">depression</a> compared to those residing with others.&nbsp;This is the conclusion of a recent study conducted by the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/index.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a> (CDC).</p>



<p>The experts analyzed data from the 2021 National Health Interview Survey including responses from 29,482 participants.</p>

<p>“People living alone may be at greater risk of social isolation and loneliness, which have been linked to higher mortality risk and adverse health outcomes, including mental health outcomes, compared with people living with a spouse or partner,” wrote the study authors.</p>



<p>Feelings of depression were defined as having “daily feelings” of depression either “a lot of the time” or “somewhere between a little and a lot of the time,” or adults who reported having “weekly feelings” of depression “a lot of the time.”</p>

<p>An alarming trend noted in the study is the rise in the number of U.S. adults living alone. This figure increased by 14.5% over the last decade, from 33.1 million in 2012 to 37.9 million in 2022.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Single-person households constituted 28.9% of all U.S. households in 2022, a notable rise from 13.6% in 1962. The analysis further revealed that in 2021, 16% of U.S. adults lived alone, with a slight majority being women (51.9%).</p>

<p>Sleepless nights might not just leave you grumpy, but could also raise your risk of heart trouble later in life.</p>



<p>A new study from the <a href="https://www.pitt.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Pittsburgh</a> School of Medicine takes a look at this unexpected link. It shows that sleep patterns during midlife may strongly influence the risk of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/portfolio-diet-a-plant-forward-strategy-to-reduce-heart-disease-risk/">heart disease</a> in the latter part of life, especially among women.</p>



<p>The research, known as the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN), tracked 2964 women’s sleep habits (insomnia symptoms and sleep duration) over several years and monitored heart disease events.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-risk-of-heart-related-events-nbsp">Risk of heart-related events&nbsp;</h2>



<p>During the study, 202 women had heart-related events. The findings revealed that middle-aged women who <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-counteracts-negative-effects-of-sleep-deprivation/">sleep</a> less than five hours every night on a consistent basis have up to 75 percent higher risk of developing cardiovascular issues like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stroke-deaths-expected-to-rise-to-five-million-by-2030/">strokes</a>, heart attacks, heart failure, and coronary artery disease.</p>



<p>The elevated risk remained even after accounting for other health factors, such as weight (BMI) and pre-existing conditions. It can be interpreted that the duration of sleep has a direct relationship with the health of the heart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sleep-duration">Sleep duration</h2>



<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that adults should get between seven to nine hours of sleep each night. However, most polls show that up to one-third of adults and about half of middle-aged women do not meet those recommendations.</p>



<p>The researchers also reported that women who slept for less than five hours had a 72% higher risk of heart disease compared to the women who averaged about six and a half hours.</p>



<p>As expected, women who had shorter sleep times and often experienced symptoms of insomnia turned out to be at greater risk of heart disease (by 75%) compared to women who reported ideal sleeping durations and very rarely had any insomnia problems. Race and ethnicity did not seem to affect the link between sleep and heart problems.</p>

This includes, among other things, a usual dip in your blood pressure to a level typically about 10-20% lower than when you're awake. This nightly decrease allows your heart and your blood vessels the necessary time to recuperate from the stresses encountered during the day.</p>



<p>However, this normal rhythm is disrupted by sleepless nights. Additional hours of higher <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/traffic-pollution-has-an-immediate-impact-on-blood-pressure/">blood pressure</a> puts extra strain on the heart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-consequences-of-sleep-deprivation-nbsp">Consequences of sleep deprivation&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Each night during sleep, it is not only your mind and body that take a break. Your blood vessels also repair themselves in a very important way. The endothelium - the inner lining of your vessels - regulates blood flow, stops dangerous clots from forming, and keeps inflammation at bay.</p>



<p>Chronic sleep deprivation, however, disrupts this harmonious coordination. Sleep loss essentially dampens the endothelium's ability to regulate blood flow and prevent clotting.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This can result in increased blood pressure and higher chances of development of blood clots, which are known to obstruct vital highways in the circulatory system.</p>



<p>Sleepless nights can also make you feel hungrier and less satisfied after eating, making it easier to pack on the pounds. Extra weight puts more strain on the heart, increasing the risk of heart problems.</p>

<p>About 56 million years ago, Earth went through a super-fast global warming spell called the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). It was one of the most intense warmings ever. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-temperatures-hit-a-record-high-this-week-with-the-worst-heat-still-to-come/">temperatures</a> jumped by 5-8 degrees Celsius (9-14 degrees Fahrenheit) in just a few thousand years.</p>



<p>Scientists from the <a href="https://www.mpic.de/2285/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute for Chemistry</a> and <a href="https://www.princeton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Princeton University</a> studied how the oceans responded to PETM.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Surprisingly, this period is similar to our current climate challenges. So, the study helps us understand how oceans handled oxygen levels during such dramatic warming.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surprising-secrets-of-ocean-warming">Surprising secrets of ocean warming</h2>



<p>To uncover secrets from the past, the researchers needed to go back in time. </p>



<p>“Marine sediments are the history book of the ocean. By studying past intervals of time in which temperatures increased rapidly, we can gain precious insights on how ocean oxygen and biology responded to changes in climate," said study lead author Simone Moretti.</p>



<p>Therefore, the team dug into the ocean floor, looking at clues in the sediment to understand old nutrient cycles and oxygen levels. </p>



<p>Usually, when water gets warmer, it cannot hold as much air. So, during the PETM, the ocean's top layers should have been warm and contain less oxygen.</p>



<p>Surprisingly, the study found increased oxygen levels in the upper ocean during the PETM. This challenges our current understanding of how oceans react to warming.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ocean-fossils">Ocean fossils</h2>



<p>Other areas with very low oxygen, called "dead zones," actually got smaller during the PETM. The shrinking dead zones also indicate increased oxygen in the upper ocean.</p>



<p>The study suggests that the ocean has a way of balancing itself when things change rapidly. This discovery is important because it shows how the ocean can adapt to big environmental changes.</p>



<p>The scientists also examined any fossils they came across. They found fossils of microscopic creatures called foraminifera, which lived in the ocean and built miniature shells from minerals.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These tiny fossils held a big secret. During PETM, the foraminifera had larger shells than usual. This suggested they responded to their environment, hinting at warmer waters with more oxygen.</p>



<p>Foraminifera are sensitive to changes in temperature, acidity, and oxygen levels. So, their bigger shells during the PETM suggest they flourished in the warmer, more oxygen-rich conditions of that time.</p>

<p>Dr. Rossi, from UCC’s School of Biological, Earth, and Environmental Sciences, emphasized the importance of detailed examination in uncovering the truth. </p>



<p>"Fossil soft tissues are rare, but when found in a fossil they can reveal important biological information, for instance, the external coloration, internal anatomy and physiology," she explained. </p>



<p>"The answer to all our questions was right in front of us, we had to study this fossil specimen in details to reveal its secrets -- even those that perhaps we did not want to know."</p>

<p>“States with monitors that are exceeding the new standard for PM2.5 will be looking to understand the chemical constituents of PM2.5, and how they have changed over time, and this will be key to developing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-from-fossil-fuels-kills-5-million-people-each-year/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emissions reductions</a> policies to address potential future nonattainment designations.”  </p>

<p>Utilizing data from the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/aqs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. EPA Air Quality System</a>, the research team scrutinized PM2.5 trends across 48 states, identifying a range of chemical species originating from both human activities and natural sources. </p>



<p>Their analysis revealed significant air quality improvements in regions with historically <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/short-term-exposure-to-air-pollution-increases-stroke-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">poor air quality</a>, such as the Ohio Valley and southeastern states, largely due to stringent controls on emissions from coal-burning power plants and industrial sources.</p>



<p>The period studied saw a dramatic 91.5% reduction in sulfur dioxide emissions from power plants, particularly in the Ohio Valley and southeastern U.S., areas previously known for high sulfur dioxide levels. </p>

<p>Contrary to expectations, the composition of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-sea-ice-algae-heavily-contaminated-with-microplastics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacterial community</a> remains remarkably consistent throughout the year, despite significant fluctuations in organic matter and environmental conditions. </p>



<p>This stability contrasts with the more variable communities found in the water column, showcasing the seabed bacteria's robustness. </p>



<p>According to principal investigator Katrin Knittel, this complexity poses challenges but also highlights the community's resilience.</p>



<p>“Benthic bacterial communities -- i.e., those in the seabed -- are very complex,” Knittel adds. “That's what makes them so stable and robust, and it makes it very challenging for us to investigate their dynamics.”</p>

<p>Spring sees a shift towards enzymes that break down b-glucans, like laminarin, indicating a change in dietary sources corresponding to the availability of fresh algal material.</p>



<p>These findings underscore the adaptability of seabed bacteria to their environment, utilizing different <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbial-awakening-arctic-food-webs-are-transforming-from-green-to-brown/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food sources</a> based on seasonal availability. </p>

<p>Thus, these microorganisms, though small in scale, play a significant role in global carbon cycling and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melting-arctic-glaciers-are-releasing-a-new-source-of-potent-methane-emissions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate processes</a>.</p>



<p>The Arctic seabed's bacterial community maintains a surprisingly consistent presence across the seasons, actively thriving despite the region's pronounced seasonality. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-arctic-seabed-bacteria-is-a-challenge">Studying Arctic seabed bacteria is a challenge</h2>



<p>However, the challenge of studying these bacteria in Spitsbergen's seabed wasn't solely due to their internal dynamics; the methodology also posed significant hurdles. </p>



<p>Doctoral student Chyrene Moncada, a member of Knittel's team, explains the difficulties encountered in sample collection. </p>



<p>“It is very difficult to obtain undisturbed samples of the seabed and the pore water contained between the sand grains,” explains doctoral student Chyrene Moncada, who is also working on the project. “That's why we developed our own device: the Ellrott grab.”</p>



<p>Named after its creator and co-author Andreas Ellrott, this sampling tool allows for the undisturbed collection of sediment from sandy beds. Its compact and lightweight design makes it ideal for small research vessels. </p>



<p>“Andreas is a brilliant engineer and designed and built the grab from scratch, manufacturing many of the components himself in a 3D printer,” says Moncada. </p>

<p>Did you know there’s more to tea than just its flavor? Every sip of tea holds a hidden universe that was born in the plant, teeming with microscopic life that shapes its unique flavor. </p>



<p>Scientists from Chinese universities including <a href="https://english.fafu.edu.cn/main.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University</a> have revealed the secrets of this miniature world within the roots of tea plants.</p>



<p>The experts have uncovered how specific microbes at the roots act as tiny alchemists coordinating the chemical reactions defining a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-tea-delays-biological-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">perfect cup of tea</a>. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mini-tea-ecosystem">Mini tea ecosystem</h2>



<p>Curious about how tiny creatures in tea plant roots impact flavor, the scientists started collecting samples from different tea plants, especially the prized Rougui variety, known for its calming taste. They identified the different types of microorganisms living in the roots and soil.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Next, to see how these organisms work together, the experts created a mini-version of the community. Basically, they created a tiny tea plant ecosystem in a lab. The researchers named this synthetic community “SynCom21.”</p>



<p>Then came the fun part: growing plants. The researchers planted tea plants and even lab plants like Arabidopsis, both within and without SynCom21. </p>



<p>This experiment was conducted under conditions where there wasn't enough nitrogen in the soil, a nutrient crucial for plant growth. </p>



<p>By carefully watching how the plants grew and how much nitrogen they absorbed, the experts could see how the microbes made a difference.</p>



<p>Outside the SynCom21, the researchers also wanted to understand the natural production of a calming compound called theanine. </p>



<p>To gauge this, they compared the roots of two different tea plants- Rougui, known for its high theanine content, to Maoxie, which has lower levels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-enhanced-tea-plant-growth">Enhanced tea plant growth</h2>



<p>Plants with SynCom21 grew taller and stronger, and were better at using nitrogen. Even better, they made more theanine.</p>



<p>“Crucially, through the isolation and assembly of a synthetic microbial community from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/matcha-tea-relieves-symptoms-of-depression/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">high-quality tea</a> roots, we managed to notably enhance the amino acid content in various tea plant varieties, resulting in an improvement in tea quality," said Tongda Xu from Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University in Fujian, China.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-insights">Key insights</h2>



<p>High-theanine roots had more "good" microbes that helped grab nitrogen from the soil. The plant uses this nitrogen to make theanine, especially in the fall when it makes the most.</p>



<p>The experts also found that the tiny microbes living in tea plant roots change throughout the year, especially those that help the plant use nitrogen. These "nitrogen helpers" are most plentiful in the fall, which is also when the tea plant makes the most of calming theanine.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The results suggest that the relationship between plants and these tiny helpers is constantly changing and depends on the time of year.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-for-tea-plants">Broader implications for tea plants</h2>



<p>The discovery could help farmers grow more food while being kinder to the Earth. It isn't just about delicious, calming tea. It suggests similar strategies could be used for other crops.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The initial expectation for the synthetic microbial community derived from high-quality tea plant roots was to enhance the quality of low-quality tea plants," said study co-author Wenxin Tang.</p>



<p>"However, to our astonishment, we discovered that the synthetic microbial community not only enhances the quality of low-quality tea plants but also exerts a significant promoting effect on certain high-quality tea varieties. Furthermore, this effect is particularly pronounced in low-nitrogen soil conditions.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sustainable-food">Sustainable food</h2>



<p>The tiny helpers in the roots seem to make plants better at using nitrogen and creating special compounds, like theanine in tea. This means we might be able to use the same idea to make fruits, vegetables, and grains tastier, healthier, and even tougher in changing weather.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research could be a big step towards growing food in a way that's good for both humans and the planet.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2024.01.044" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a>.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet <em>Archaeopteris</em>: the first modern tree</h2>



<p>The star of this ancient forest is <em>Archaeopteris</em> – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur <em>Archaeopteryx</em>. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.</p>



<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

Then, almost like magic, acid rain vanished from public discourse. What happened? Did we actually solve one of the late 20th century's most pressing environmental challenges?</p>



<p>The answer might surprise you. Unlike many environmental issues that drag on indefinitely, acid rain represents one of modern history's most successful ecological recovery stories. It's a tale of science, politics, and technology working together to tackle what seemed impossible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>

<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
