<p>For half a century, black hole fireworks have lived mostly in theory. The standard picture holds that if black holes ever “explode,” it’s vanishingly rare - maybe once every 100,000 years somewhere in the universe - and far beyond our reach to witness.</p>



<p>A new analysis flips that expectation on its head. Physicists at the <a href="https://www.umass.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Massachusetts Amherst</a> argue there’s better than a nine-in-ten chance that an observable black hole outburst will occur in the next ten years. </p>



<p>The team noted that our existing array of space- and ground-based telescopes is already capable of seeing it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-holes-that-can-explode">Black holes that can explode</h2>



<p>The scenario hinges on a particular class of black hole first proposed by Stephen Hawking in 1970: <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/primordial-black-holes-may-be-shifting-earths-orbit/">primordial black holes</a> (PBHs).</p>



<p>Unlike their heavyweight cousins born from the deaths of massive stars, PBHs could have formed in the first fractions of a second after the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/if-the-big-bang-theory-is-correct-what-exactly-happened/">Big Bang</a>. During that time, extreme density ripples compressed pockets of the early universe.</p>



<p>Crucially, a PBH can be far lighter than a stellar black hole. And the lighter a black hole is, the hotter it becomes, slowly bleeding energy as particles via Hawking radiation. </p>



<p>As it shrinks, it heats up even more in a runaway process that ends in a final, brilliant outburst. This outburst is a flash of particles and high-energy light that, in principle, we can detect.</p>



<p>That last part has been the sticking point. If PBHs exist, why haven’t we seen one go off? The prevailing wisdom has been that the odds are simply too small on human timescales.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-small-twist-with-big-consequences">Small twist with big consequences</h2>



<p>The UMass Amherst team revisited one of the field’s quiet assumptions: that primordial black holes carry no electric charge. </p>



<p>In their work, they explore a “dark QED” toy model - an analog of electromagnetism that includes a very heavy, hypothetical cousin of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shape-of-electrons-revealed-first-time-through-big-advance-in-quantum-physics/">electron</a>, sometimes called a dark electron.</p>



<p>If PBHs formed with even a tiny amount of this dark electric charge, the researchers show, the charge could temporarily stabilize the black hole’s evaporation. That pause delays the finale, so more PBHs would be reaching their terminal phase now. </p>



<p>With all current experimental constraints folded in, their calculations shift the expected cadence of observable PBH explosions from “about once every hundred millennia” to “roughly once per decade.”</p>



<p>“We’re not claiming it’s guaranteed, but the probability may be as high as 90% that one occurs within the next ten years," said Baker.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-catching-an-exploding-black-hole">Catching an exploding black hole</h2>



<p>If a PBH is in its endgame, it should spew a burst of Hawking radiation: a short-lived cascade of particles and photons across a broad energy range. That signature is exactly the kind of high-energy transient today’s observatories are built to chase.</p>



<p>Space telescopes sensitive to gamma rays and X-rays, wide-field optical surveyors scanning the sky nightly, and radio arrays listening for fleeting bursts could all contribute to catching - and confirming - the event. </p>



<p>Because only lightweight primordial black holes can explode today, detecting Hawking radiation would be tantamount to detecting a PBH.</p>



<p>The team’s message is simple: prepare the observing playbook now. Coordinated triggers, rapid follow-up, and cross-checks across wavelengths could turn a single flash into a definitive detection.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-detection-would-rewrite-the-textbooks">Detection would rewrite the textbooks</h2>



<p>Seeing a PBH explode would do more than check a box next to Hawking’s most famous prediction. It would provide the first direct evidence that black holes radiate and evaporate, lifting a key idea out of the realm of theory and into observation.</p>



<p>It would also prove PBHs exist at all - and that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-capture-baby-pictures-of-the-very-early-universe-cosmic-microwave-background/">infant universe</a> could seed gravitational monsters without stars. Perhaps most tantalizing, the debris of that final flash would act like a cosmic census. </p>



<p>In principle, the particle spray encodes every constituent of nature that couples to gravity and can be thermally produced. These include familiar residents like electrons and quarks, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/higgs-boson-god-particle-still-remains-quantum-mystery-after-12-years/">Higgs boson</a>, any dark matter particles if they exist, and potentially species we’ve never seen.</p>



<p>A single well-observed event could offer a once-only inventory of the universe’s building blocks, informing everything from particle physics to cosmology.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bold-claims-big-stakes">Bold claims, big stakes</h2>



<p>Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence. The group’s “dark QED” setup is intentionally simple, and the true microphysics of any dark sector - if it exists - could differ.</p>



<p>Still, the work highlights how modest changes to long-held assumptions can dramatically alter expectations for what we might observe. </p>



<p>It also underscores an opportunity: even if the odds are lower than the headline number, the payoff of a detection is so immense that it makes sense to plan for it.</p>



<p>We already know how to look. We already have the tools. If nature obliges, the next decade could deliver a brief, brilliant flash that confirms Hawking radiation, reveals <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/directly-detecting-dark-matter-primordial-black-holes-simple-as-monitoring-mars-orbit/">primordial black holes</a>, and hands physicists a ledger of the universe’s particles - all in one cosmic firework.</p>

<p>Did you know there’s more to tea than just its flavor? Every sip of tea holds a hidden universe that was born in the plant, teeming with microscopic life that shapes its unique flavor. </p>



<p>Scientists from Chinese universities including <a href="https://english.fafu.edu.cn/main.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University</a> have revealed the secrets of this miniature world within the roots of tea plants.</p>



<p>The experts have uncovered how specific microbes at the roots act as tiny alchemists coordinating the chemical reactions defining a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-tea-delays-biological-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">perfect cup of tea</a>. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mini-tea-ecosystem">Mini tea ecosystem</h2>



<p>Curious about how tiny creatures in tea plant roots impact flavor, the scientists started collecting samples from different tea plants, especially the prized Rougui variety, known for its calming taste. They identified the different types of microorganisms living in the roots and soil.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Next, to see how these organisms work together, the experts created a mini-version of the community. Basically, they created a tiny tea plant ecosystem in a lab. The researchers named this synthetic community “SynCom21.”</p>



<p>Then came the fun part: growing plants. The researchers planted tea plants and even lab plants like Arabidopsis, both within and without SynCom21. </p>



<p>This experiment was conducted under conditions where there wasn't enough nitrogen in the soil, a nutrient crucial for plant growth. </p>



<p>By carefully watching how the plants grew and how much nitrogen they absorbed, the experts could see how the microbes made a difference.</p>



<p>Outside the SynCom21, the researchers also wanted to understand the natural production of a calming compound called theanine. </p>



<p>To gauge this, they compared the roots of two different tea plants- Rougui, known for its high theanine content, to Maoxie, which has lower levels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-enhanced-tea-plant-growth">Enhanced tea plant growth</h2>



<p>Plants with SynCom21 grew taller and stronger, and were better at using nitrogen. Even better, they made more theanine.</p>



<p>“Crucially, through the isolation and assembly of a synthetic microbial community from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/matcha-tea-relieves-symptoms-of-depression/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">high-quality tea</a> roots, we managed to notably enhance the amino acid content in various tea plant varieties, resulting in an improvement in tea quality," said Tongda Xu from Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University in Fujian, China.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-insights">Key insights</h2>



<p>High-theanine roots had more "good" microbes that helped grab nitrogen from the soil. The plant uses this nitrogen to make theanine, especially in the fall when it makes the most.</p>



<p>The experts also found that the tiny microbes living in tea plant roots change throughout the year, especially those that help the plant use nitrogen. These "nitrogen helpers" are most plentiful in the fall, which is also when the tea plant makes the most of calming theanine.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The results suggest that the relationship between plants and these tiny helpers is constantly changing and depends on the time of year.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-for-tea-plants">Broader implications for tea plants</h2>



<p>The discovery could help farmers grow more food while being kinder to the Earth. It isn't just about delicious, calming tea. It suggests similar strategies could be used for other crops.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The initial expectation for the synthetic microbial community derived from high-quality tea plant roots was to enhance the quality of low-quality tea plants," said study co-author Wenxin Tang.</p>



<p>"However, to our astonishment, we discovered that the synthetic microbial community not only enhances the quality of low-quality tea plants but also exerts a significant promoting effect on certain high-quality tea varieties. Furthermore, this effect is particularly pronounced in low-nitrogen soil conditions.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sustainable-food">Sustainable food</h2>



<p>The tiny helpers in the roots seem to make plants better at using nitrogen and creating special compounds, like theanine in tea. This means we might be able to use the same idea to make fruits, vegetables, and grains tastier, healthier, and even tougher in changing weather.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research could be a big step towards growing food in a way that's good for both humans and the planet.</p>

<p>In the quest to unravel the complexities of male infertility, a research team led by Professor Hubert Pausch of ETH Zurich has turned to an unlikely source for insights: <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bull-stampede-bison-behavior-hinders-aspen-recovery-in-yellowstone/">bulls</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research not only sheds light on the genetic underpinnings of male fertility but also paves the way for potential advancements in human fertility research and livestock breeding practices.</p>

<p>Infertility affects approximately one in eight couples globally, with male fertility issues contributing to half of these cases. However, identifying the genetic causes behind such fertility disorders in humans has been a significant challenge due to the lack of comprehensive data on semen quality and molecular markers from large cohorts of healthy, reproductive-aged men.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This gap in knowledge has led researchers to explore alternative avenues, with the study on young bulls emerging as a pivotal step towards understanding the genes and mechanisms controlling male fertility.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-research-nbsp">Focus of the research&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers analyzed tissue samples from the testicles, epididymis, and vas deferens of 118 freshly slaughtered bulls of reproductive age. Importantly, these animals were not killed specifically for the study, mitigating ethical concerns.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Based on their analysis, the experts were able to characterize the transcriptomes - the complete set of messenger RNA molecules - of the tissues. This made it possible to identify active genes within the reproductive organs and their impact on fertility.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-insights">Key insights</h2>



<p>The study revealed a multitude of genes and their variants associated with fertility in bulls, many of which are also likely relevant to human male fertility. According to Xena Mapel, the study's first author, the regulation of male fertility is "highly conserved" across mammals, suggesting a fundamental similarity in reproductive gene function among species.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“These genes are closely linked to poor fertility in bulls,” said Mapel. “Such subfertile bulls don’t show up during conventional ejaculate screening. However, they can be reliably detected with our new marker genes.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-of-studying-male-fertility">Challenges of studying male fertility</h2>



<p>Cattle, despite being an unconventional choice for such studies, offer unique advantages. Their genetic makeup is well-documented, and the regular collection and analysis of ejaculate for breeding purposes provide a rich data source for research.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This contrasts with the challenges of studying human male fertility, where data comparability and the invasive nature of obtaining reproductive tissue samples pose significant obstacles.</p>



<p>“We don’t know what influences the men were exposed to before they took the fertility test, which will be different for every test subject. Furthermore, it’s practically impossible to obtain tissue samples from their reproductive tract, as that would entail an invasive medical procedure,” noted the researchers.</p>



<p>The greatest advantage of the bull cohort analyzed for the study is that all the animals are similar in age. “This cohort is very homogeneous. If we had to carry out a comparable study on men, we’d have to rely on voluntary donors, potentially across all possible age groups. This would give us data that’s very difficult to compare.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications-nbsp">Study implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>For human fertility studies, while the immediate application of these findings remains uncertain, they offer a promising foundation for future research into the genetic factors influencing male fertility.&nbsp;</p>



<p>On the other hand, livestock breeders stand to benefit directly from these insights. By integrating the new genetic markers into bull breeding programs, breeders can more accurately identify fertile bulls, significantly reducing the financial losses associated with unsuccessful artificial inseminations.</p>



<p>Artificial insemination is a cornerstone of modern livestock breeding, with around 800,000 cows artificially inseminated annually in Switzerland alone.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The economic impact of using semen from subfertile bulls is substantial, not only in terms of the direct costs of insemination but also due to the broader financial implications of reduced milk production and the need to replace non-pregnant cows. The study's findings have the potential to enhance breeding efficiency and sustainability in the livestock industry.</p>

<p>In groundbreaking research led by Justin Valliere, an assistant professor at the <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu/%C3%B9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Davis </a>Department of Plant Sciences, it has been discovered that the regrowth of native wildflowers and plants, typically expected post-wildfire, is being hindered by invasive species. </p>



<p>This shift is attributed to the nitrogen found in vehicle emissions, marking a significant departure from the natural rejuvenation process following fires.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-increasing-vulnerability-nbsp">Increasing vulnerability&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“Many native plants in fire-prone areas rely on fire, and some are entirely dependent on it. Some are even most abundant after a fire. But we found that these fire-following species may be especially vulnerable to the combination of nitrogen pollution and invasive plants,” Valliere explained. This vulnerability is contributing to a noticeable decline in the native plant population within these mountains.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fighting-for-resources-nbsp">Fighting for resources&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The ecological dynamic described by Valliere can be likened to a depleting bank account, where the "deposits" - in the form of seeds ready to sprout following fires - are not being adequately replenished.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While fire serves as a vital ecological catalyst, recycling nutrients back into the soil for the dormant seeds to utilize upon the next rainfall, invasive species, benefiting from an early start, rapid growth, and higher seed production, are outcompeting the natives.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These invaders exploit the nitrogen and other nutrients from vehicle emissions, effectively winning the essential resources of water and sunlight and inhibiting the growth and maturation of native plants.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study">Focus of the study</h2>



<p>The 2013 Springs Fire offered Valliere and his team, including colleagues from <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/">UC Riverside </a>and the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/index.htm">National Park Service</a>, a unique window to study the effects of wildfire coupled with nitrogen enrichment on native vegetation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By simulating the nitrogen levels typical of Los Angeles smog in the Santa Monica Mountains test plots, the research demonstrated an accelerated decline of native plants in nitrogen-enhanced soils, post-wildfire.</p>

<p>A new study utilizing advanced computational models has made a startling prediction about the future of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atlantic-ocean-currents-rainfall/">Atlantic</a> Ocean. </p>



<p>Researchers suggest that a subduction zone located beneath the Gibraltar Strait is set to extend further into the Atlantic, potentially giving rise to an Atlantic Ring of Fire, akin to the Pacific's notorious volcanic and seismic belt.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This significant geological shift is expected to occur 'soon' on a geological scale, approximately 20 million years from now.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-wilson-cycle-nbsp">The Wilson Cycle&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The concept of oceans as permanent fixtures on Earth's surface is challenged by the reality of the Wilson Cycle, which describes the birth, growth, and eventual closure of oceanic bodies over hundreds of millions of years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For the Atlantic to transition from expansion to closure, new subduction zones, where one tectonic plate dives beneath another, must emerge. However, the formation of subduction zones is a complex process due to the immense strength of tectonic plates.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A potential resolution to this "paradox" is the migration of subduction zones from older, contracting oceans, like the Mediterranean, to younger basins, such as the Atlantic - a process termed "subduction invasion."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-significance-nbsp">Study significance&nbsp;</h2>



<p>This research marks the first illustration of such an invasion occurring directly. A sophisticated, gravity-driven 3-D model forecasts the expansion of a subduction zone beneath the Gibraltar Strait into the Atlantic, laying the groundwork for an Atlantic subduction system. This transformative event is predicted to unfold in roughly 20 million years.</p>



<p>João Duarte, the study's lead author from the Instituto Dom Luiz at the <a href="https://www.ulisboa.pt/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Lisbon</a>'s Faculty of Sciences (Ciências ULisboa), Portugal, highlights the technological advancements enabling this discovery: “Subduction invasion is inherently a three-dimensional process that requires advanced modeling tools and supercomputers that were not available a few years ago. We can now simulate the formation of the Gibraltar Arc with great detail and also how it may evolve in the deep future.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-insights-nbsp">Critical insights&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study also re-evaluates the activity of the Gibraltar subduction zone, which some researchers previously thought was dormant due to a slowdown in activity over the last million years. The findings suggest this lull will persist for another 20 million years before the zone invades the Atlantic and intensifies, marking the onset of crustal recycling on the Atlantic's eastern flank and potentially the beginning of the ocean's closure.</p>



<p>Duarte further explains the significance of studying the Gibraltar zone: “There are two other subduction zones on the other side of the Atlantic – the Lesser Antilles, in the Caribbean, and the Scotia Arc, near Antarctica. However, these subduction zones invaded the Atlantic several million years ago. Studying Gibraltar is an invaluable opportunity because it allows observing the process in its early stages when it is just happening.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications-nbsp">Study implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>This research posits subduction invasion as a likely mechanism for initiating subduction in Atlantic-type oceans, underscoring its importance in Earth's geological evolution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Moreover, the confirmation of ongoing activity in the Gibraltar subduction zone carries implications for seismic risk in the region, emphasizing the need for preparedness against potentially devastating earthquakes, reminiscent of the 1755 Great Lisbon Earthquake.</p>

<p>The Great Migration is a remarkable phenomenon that takes place each year in the Serengeti National Park and involves more than two million animals.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-links-zebras-to-sperm-swimming-science-never-ceases-to-amaze/">Zebras</a>, wildebeest, and gazelle follow the same migratory routes, one after another, in a body-size dependent way. This "grazing succession" has long puzzled scientists, especially considering that the animals are sharing limited food resources.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-grazing-succession-nbsp">Grazing succession&nbsp;</h2>



<p>A recent study led by Michael Anderson of <a href="https://www.wfu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wake Forest University</a> has shed light on the intricate dynamics that govern this grazing succession, revealing a complex interplay of competition and facilitation at work.</p>



<p>During this migratory journey, animals of varying body sizes follow one another in a specific order due to differences in their grazing habits and the impact on the vegetation. </p>



<p>The Serengeti's zebra, weighing approximately 230 kilograms, lead the migration, followed by the wildebeest at about 180 kilograms, and finally, the much smaller gazelle, weighing around 20 kilograms.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This sequential movement has intrigued researchers, leading to the question: Why do these species, competing for limited food resources, migrate in such a harmonized manner?</p>



<p>"Disentangling the potential mechanisms that drive the movement patterns, arrival times, and foraging behaviors of the three migrating species has been hampered by a lack of long-term, detailed data at the appropriate scale," said the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-animal-migration-patterns">Animal migration patterns</h2>



<p>To investigate, the team used a variety of modern research tools including an 8-year camera-trap survey, GPS-collared animal tracking, and fecal DNA metabarcoding.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This innovative approach allowed the team to analyze the timing, arrival, and interactions among the zebra, wildebeest, and gazelle with unprecedented detail. </p>



<p>The findings offer a new perspective on the drivers behind the migratory patterns of these herbivores.</p>



<p>The research highlights a delicate balance between competitive and facilitative interactions among the species. Zebras, it appears, are pushed ahead in the migration by competition for food resources with wildebeest. </p>

<p>By grazing, wildebeest reduce grass biomass, which in turn stimulates the growth of new vegetation. This newer growth is then ideally suited for the trailing gazelle, who specialize in capitalizing on such opportunities.</p>

<p>“Our results highlight a balance between facilitative and competitive forces,” said the researchers, emphasizing the nuanced relationship between the species and their environment.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study not only deepens our understanding of migration and grazing patterns in the Serengeti and illustrates the importance of long-term, detailed data in unraveling the complex mechanisms that govern natural ecosystems.</p>



<p>"Multiple lines of evidence point to a 'push-and-pull' dynamic in which wildebeest, the dominant grazer, push zebra ahead by reducing grass biomass while pulling along gazelle through facilitation," wrote the study authors.</p>



<p>"Our study helps to reconcile decades of conflicting results by demonstrating that competition and facilitation operate concurrently during animal migration with effect sizes that depend on resource availability."</p>

If you sympathize with the party that wanted to improve healthcare through higher taxes, you're likely to attribute the improvements to the tax increase, even though the improvements might have had a completely different cause”.</p>

<p>In the UK countryside, there are two types of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/squirrels-gamble-to-increase-evolutionary-fitness/">squirrels</a>: red and grey. However, they do not coexist peacefully. Since the arrival of the larger grey squirrel from North America in the 1800s, the native red squirrel population has sadly declined. </p>



<p>There are two main reasons for this decline: the squirrels struggle for resources like food, and the grey squirrels carry a virus called squirrelpox that only harms the red squirrels.</p>



<p>Recently, scientists from the <a href="https://www.surrey.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Surrey</a>, <a href="https://www.bangor.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bangor University</a> and the <a href="https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Liverpool</a> discovered a surprising third reason: tiny gut bacteria might be helping one side win the battle. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-gut-bacteria">Studying gut bacteria</h2>



<p>The researchers studied the bacteria in the guts (caeca) of the animals. Following ethical guidelines, they obtained squirrel remains from North Wales and collected gut samples from ten red and ten grey squirrels.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The DNA of the samples was then extracted using a technique called 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The researchers also checked for antibiotic resistance of the gut bacteria. They specifically focused on E. coli, a type of bacteria that can sometimes cause illness.</p>



<p>Finally, they compared all of the different bacteria found. The goal was to understand how these tiny residents might be influencing the overall health of their furry hosts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbiome-differences">Microbiome differences</h2>



<p>The researchers found fascinating differences between the two types of squirrels. In particular, they determined that grey squirrels have more diverse gut bacteria.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The scientists also compared the specific types of bacteria and found distinct differences. Grey squirrels have more bacteria from groups like S24-7, RF39, and Rikenellaceae, while red squirrels have more Bacilli.</p>



<p>This difference could impact how well the squirrels fight off diseases and how they interact with their environment.</p>



<p>For example, the bacteria in grey squirrels can digest a compound called "calcium oxalate" found in tree bark. This allows them to extract calcium more efficiently, potentially giving them an advantage over red squirrels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-antibiotic-resistance">Antibiotic resistance</h2>



<p>Unfortunately, all of the bacteria from both squirrel types could resist a common medicine called “amoxicillin/clavulanic acid.”</p>



<p>Even worse, some of the grey squirrels had bacteria that could beat stronger medicines like "cefotaxime" and "sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim." This means the helpful bacteria living inside these squirrels had tricks to avoid the effects of these medicines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-nbsp">Broader implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“More research needs to be done to further understand the relationship between red and grey squirrels and their gut microbiota, but perhaps in the future we could develop this research into methods that could promote healthy gut bacteria in red squirrels or new ways of preventing squirrels from damaging trees," said study co-author Chris Nichols.</p>



<p>“These findings will help further our understanding of the impact grey squirrels have on the UK’s red squirrel population and our vitally important trees and forests, which will in turn help us understand how best to protect them in the future," concluded Professor Ian Brown of the <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/animal-and-plant-health-agency">Animal and Plant Health Agency</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-about-red-squirrels">More about red squirrels </h2>



<p>Red squirrels, native to the UK, are known for their distinctive rich red fur, tufted ears, and bushy tails. They are smaller than the grey squirrel and are found mainly in areas of Scotland, the Lake District, and parts of Wales and England, particularly in coniferous forest habitats which provide their preferred food sources such as seeds from pine cones.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The red squirrel is an iconic species in the UK, celebrated for its playful nature and agility. Conservation efforts are underway to protect and increase the population of red squirrels. These efforts include habitat management, controlling grey squirrel populations, and reintroduction projects to areas where red squirrels have declined or disappeared.</p>

The battle between squirrels is won through their gut bacteria

<p>Astronomers have been stumped by strange signals in the sky. These signals, called "fast radio bursts" (FRBs), are powerful <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/farthest-known-fast-radio-burst-traced-to-rare-cluster-of-galaxies/">bursts</a> of radio energy that last only milliseconds, but release as much energy as the sun does in several months. </p>



<p>However, the origins of FRBs remain a complete mystery. A team of scientists from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>, <a href="https://www.riken.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RIKEN</a>, and <a href="https://www.kyoto-u.ac.jp/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kyoto University</a> set out to solve the puzzle.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In 2020, a star called SGR 1935+2154 emitted FRBs that lasted for a fraction of a second. This event, called FRB 200428, was picked up by multiple telescopes and instruments.</p>



<p>Intrigued, the researchers decided to focus on this star which is about 20,000 light-years away. This isn't just any star – it's a "magnetar," the leftover core of a giant star that exploded. It has a very strong magnetic field this is much stronger than anything we can make on Earth.</p>



<p>The scientists observed every aspect of this unique star. They tracked its spinning rate, analyzed the light it emitted, and even calculated its temperature.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-space-telescopes">Space telescopes</h2>



<p>The study was based on observations from two powerful telescopes called NICER (Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer) and NuSTAR (Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array).&nbsp;</p>



<p>NICER is generally used for observing X-rays with energies between 2,000 and 8,000 eV. This is like the kind of light you might see from a hot, glowing gas. In contrast, NuSTAR specializes in detecting much higher energy X-rays, reaching up to about 79,000 eV.</p>



<p>For SGR 1935+2154, scientists used NICER to get detailed information about the lower-energy X-rays and NuSTAR to look for high-energy X-rays coming from different areas. They studied the detailed pattern of these bursts (called "pulse profiles") and the different energies of the radiation (called "spectra").</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-magnetar-glitches">Magnetar glitches</h2>



<p>SGR 1935+2154 was observed to have two sudden changes or “glitches” in its spinning speed. It sped up briefly, then slowed down quickly. This is kind of like when a bicycle wheel gets a big push and then spins really fast for a moment before slowing down again.</p>



<p>FRBs occurred between these two glitches. Scientists believe that an external force or event outside the magnetar must have given it a big push to make it spin so fast. It's like the magnetic field itself might have experienced a disruption or distortion causing it to "snap back" and result in a sudden change in the magnetar's spin behavior.</p>



<p>"Typically, when glitches happen, it takes the magnetar weeks or months to get back to its normal speed,” said Chin-Ping Hu, an astrophysicist at National Changhua University of Education in Taiwan and the lead author of the study. “So clearly things are happening with these objects on much shorter time scales than we previously thought, and that might be related to how fast radio bursts are generated.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-powerful-dynamics">Powerful dynamics</h2>



<p>Right before a big burst of energy (FRB),&nbsp; the star let out a series of smaller bursts. This indicates a heightened state of activity. The magnetar’s appearance also seemed to change. Scientists took a close look at all the different emissions of light coming from the magnetar, both before and after the big burst.</p>



<p>They found clues that the specific area where the light was coming from changed quite often. The star’s temperature seemed to fluctuate as well. By studying its X-rays, scientists discovered that hot and cold spots kept appearing and disappearing constantly. These quick changes suggest powerful and dynamic events happening within the star.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-proposed-theories">Proposed theories</h2>



<p>Based on theoretical models, scientists propose several theories. One of them is the presence of special fluids (superfluids) within the star that interact with its outer shell in a way that influences its rotation speed and causes the "glitches."&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>Additionally, the experts believe strong external winds impacting the magnetar from outside could affect these internal fluids, further influencing its rotation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-significance-nbsp">Study significance&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Peeking into magnetars and FRBs helps us understand the wildest corners of space. This knowledge benefits everyone, from revealing how stars live and die to understanding super-strong magnetic fields and matter behaving in ways we can't recreate on Earth.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-potential-trap">A potential trap</h2>



<p>The irony of these monumental efforts is the potential trap they create for themselves. As Van der Kaaden points out, the very mountains that offer them abundant food and life might become their prisons. With the onset of climate change, warmer waters could compel the corals to seek cooler, deeper havens.</p>



<p>“When the water gets warmer, these creatures prefer to be deeper, but a coral doesn’t just walk down the mountain,” said Van der Kaaden.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Van der Kaaden conducted research on real reefs and using computational models. “In both cases, I tried to discover the spatial patterns in which the corals grow. With the Australian Great Barrier Reef, for example, this is very simple: you can even see their growth patterns from space." </p>



<p>Van der Kaaden's exploration into the darkness wasn't straightforward. She ventured into what she describes as a dark maze. </p>



<p>"With cold-water corals, you have to recognize these patterns while walking around in a pitch-dark maze, so to speak, with only a small flashlight. And yet, using statistical techniques and video stills, we did manage to get an overall picture."&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ingenious-adaptation-nbsp">Ingenious adaptation&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The findings not only shed light on the regular patterns of reefs, ridges, and mountains formed by these corals but also on their ingenious adaptation to manipulate water currents for food.</p>



<p>"Over hundreds of thousands of years, the coral reefs form mountains that can grow higher than the Eiffel Tower. So, the corals get higher in the ocean, where there is more food, and those mountains also create water currents that transport the food to the mountain."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cold-blooded-animals">Cold-blooded animals</h2>



<p>The expectation is that if the water becomes too warm due to climate change, the corals will want to grow lower and colder.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"A cold-blooded animal like a coral uses up too much energy in warmer water. But a coral is an animal that is attached to the bottom, so it can't just move down the mountain," said Van der Kaaden.</p>



<p>"It disperses through larvae, but for new corals, the food conditions on the flanks of a coral mountain are worse because of the specific flow patterns."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-nbsp">Broader implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Despite the potential challenges posed by climate change, Van der Kaaden remains cautiously optimistic about the future of cold-water corals.</p>



<p>"Maybe these organisms are more resilient than we think, and if not, they might build new mountains or reefs in other places. But with this research, I do want to show that an organism's response to climate change is not always easy to predict."</p>



<p>"There are many complex processes that create unexpected obstacles or opportunities. We, as a society must take that into account when preparing for the effects of climate change."</p>

<p>Amid the challenges posed by the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-death-toll-of-covid-19-pandemic-revealed/">COVID-19</a> pandemic, a study led by <a href="https://www.brighamandwomens.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brigham and Women's Hospital</a> (BWH) sheds new light on the potential protective effects of maintaining an active lifestyle. </p>



<p>The comprehensive study reveals that individuals adhering to exercise guidelines recommended by the U.S. and <a href="https://www.who.int/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">World Health Organization</a> prior to the pandemic's onset exhibited significantly reduced risks of contracting COVID-19 and necessitating hospitalization due to the virus. </p>

<p>The research utilized data from 61,557 adults, averaging an age of 76, who participated in three ongoing clinical trial cohorts - COSMOS, VITAL, and WHS. These participants had previously documented their exercise habits, which ranged from biking and walking to more vigorous activities like running and climbing stairs.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-findings">Key findings</h2>



<p>From May 2020 through May 2022, the study revealed that those who were sufficiently active according to established guidelines saw a significant reduction in both COVID-19 infection rates and hospitalization rates due to the virus. Intriguingly, the protective effects of physical activity appeared to be more pronounced in females.</p>



<p>Despite its insights, the study acknowledges limitations, such as its observational nature and reliance on self-reported data, which may not fully capture health behavior changes during the pandemic. The researchers emphasize the need for further investigation to extend these findings across diverse demographic groups.</p>

<p>"This large, unique study in older adults as they navigated the onset of the pandemic provides important support for physical activity in preventing COVID-19 infection and hospitalization that may extend more broadly to enhanced immune function and lessening vulnerability to infections," explained senior author Howard D. Sesso, an associate epidemiologist at the Division of Preventive Medicine and Osher Center at BWH.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>

The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>

These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
