<p>For a long time, the Stone Age has been painted in narrow strokes. Men hunted with stone tools, women cooked. and children watched. This idea shaped research, museum displays, even the way skeletons were identified. But the ground in Latvia is telling a very different story.</p>



<p>At Zvejnieki, one of Europe’s largest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tool-flint-discovery-challenges-theory-of-human-cultural-evolution/">Stone Age</a> cemeteries, archaeologists have found that tools buried with the dead were not just men’s possessions. Women had them too, so did children. </p>



<p>The way these objects were placed in graves shows they carried meaning far beyond daily work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-graves-and-stone-tools">Ancient graves and stone tools</h2>



<p>Zvejnieki sits near Lake Burtnieks. The site has more than 330 graves, spanning over 5,000 years. Excavations began in the 1960s and continued for decades. </p>



<p>Thousands of ornaments made from animal teeth and amber came out of the ground. Red ochre stained the soil around many skeletons. These details have been studied again and again.</p>



<p>But stone tools? They were mostly ignored. Archaeologists thought of them as practical. Not decorative or symbolic. Just leftovers of everyday survival. That view collapsed once Dr. Aimée Little and her team returned with new tools of their own.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-closer-at-stone">Looking closer at stone</h2>



<p>The Stone Dead Project used microscopes to search for tiny traces on the artifacts. The team studied how each tool was made, used, and finally placed in graves. </p>



<p>The results surprised everyone. Some scrapers showed wear from working animal hides. Others looked fresh, almost untouched, as if they had been created only for burial. And many were broken on purpose before being laid to rest.</p>



<p>These details reveal that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-humans-traveled-long-distances-to-find-colorful-stones-for-tools/">stone</a> tools were not only about survival. They were part of rituals. Part of how people said goodbye. Part of how they thought about life and death.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tools-in-all-graves">Tools in all graves</h2>



<p>The discoveries challenged long-standing ideas about gender. Women were just as likely, sometimes even more likely, to be buried with stone artifacts. Children and older adults received them too. </p>



<p>That makes the picture clear: these objects were not reserved for hunters. They belonged to everyone.</p>



<p>“Our findings overturn the old stereotype of ‘Man the Hunter’ which has been a dominant theme in Stone Age studies, and has even influenced, on occasion, how some infants have even been sexed, on the basis that they were given lithic tools,” noted Dr. Little.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-traditions-over-time">Changing traditions over time</h2>



<p>Burial practices at Zvejnieki shifted. In earlier centuries, tools were rare in graves. Later, by the 4th millennium BC, deposits grew larger. Some people were buried with dozens of flint artefacts. Many had never been used. Their role was clearly symbolic.</p>



<p>This change matched wider cultural <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tools-flint-created-400000-years-show-technological-advancement-of-early-humans/">shifts</a> across the Baltic. Communities began to use more red ochre. They buried people collectively. Clay death masks appeared. The inclusion of flint tools fit into this wider move toward more elaborate rituals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-tools-reveal">What the tools reveal</h2>



<p>Micro-wear analysis showed patterns that mattered. Scrapers often carried traces of hide working, suggesting that preparing skins was a valued activity even in death. </p>



<p>Bone and butchery marks appeared on some pieces. Mineral traces, connected to ochre, turned up only in female burials. That detail hints at gender-specific ritual roles.</p>



<p>Bifacial points - long seen as hunting weapons - often showed no use at all. They were made, broken, and buried. Their meaning was symbolic, not practical. Destroying them may have been part of letting go, part of a shared tradition that stretched beyond one community.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-special-graves-with-stone-tools">Special graves with stone tools</h2>



<p>Some graves stood out. An older child was buried with more than 40 tools, many unused, alongside ornaments of amber and animal teeth.</p>



<p>Another grave, belonging to a young woman, contained primary deposits with her body and additional offerings at her feet. These were not random choices. They were deliberate acts, full of meaning for the people who stood around the grave.</p>



<p>These burials show that women and children were not peripheral. They stood at the center of ritual traditions. Their graves carried messages for the living.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breaking-old-assumptions">Breaking old assumptions</h2>



<p>The implications are clear. Tools in Stone Age burials were not simply for men. They were symbols for everyone - men, women, children, and elders. They carried social meaning and were part of rituals that bound communities together in the face of loss.</p>



<p>“This research demonstrates that we cannot make these gendered assumptions and that lithic grave goods played an important role in the mourning rituals of children and women, as well as men,” noted Dr. Anđa Petrović, from the <a href="https://www.bg.ac.rs/home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Belgrade</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-it-matters-today">Why it matters today</h2>



<p>What might look like simple flint flakes turn out to be keys to identity, memory, and ritual. They tell us that Stone Age communities valued more than hunting. They cared about symbolism. They cared about honoring all their members.</p>



<p>“The study highlights how much more there is to learn about the lives - and deaths - of Europe’s earliest communities, and why even the seemingly simplest objects can unlock insights about our shared human past and how people responded to death,” said Dr. Little.</p>



<p>The study shows that re-examining overlooked artifacts can transform our understanding of the past. At Zvejnieki, stone tools are no longer just tools. They are stories carved in flint, carrying the voices of communities that lived, grieved, and remembered.</p>

<p>A team of astronomers has made a significant breakthrough in understanding the life cycle of close binary star systems.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Using the advanced capabilities of <a href="https://www.gsu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Georgia State</a>’s Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy (CHARA) Array, the experts detected the dim glow of stellar remnants that have been devoured by companion <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/runaway-black-hole-creates-a-trail-of-stars/">stars</a>, a phenomenon known as stellar cannibalism.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-chara-array">The CHARA Array</h2>



<p>The CHARA Array, which is located in Mount Wilson, California, employs six telescopes spread across its summit to function as a single colossal telescope with a diameter of 330 meters. This unique setup allows astronomers to observe stars with very small angular separations - a task that is impossible with conventional telescopes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This technique, along with the use of sophisticated MIRC-X and MYSTIC cameras developed at the University of Michigan and Exeter University, respectively, enabled the researchers to detect the faint light of stripped stars next to their brighter, predatory companions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rapidly-rotating-stars">Rapidly rotating stars</h2>



<p>The research was led by postdoctoral research associate Robert Klement. It was focused on a collection of "Be stars" - rapidly rotating stars that are thought to have unusual orbiting companions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Be stars are among the fastest rotating stars in the universe, spinning so quickly that they eject gas from their equatorial regions, forming a distinctive orbiting gas ring.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The origin of these Be stars has long intrigued astronomers, with prevailing theories suggesting that they are the result of intense interactions and mass transfer between close binary stars.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-observing-a-stellar-corpse">Observing a stellar corpse</h2>



<p>Binary star systems, especially those with small separations, experience a complex evolution. As these stars age and expand, the gas from one star can start to flow to its companion, effectively feeding the latter and causing it to spin faster. This mass transfer can strip the donor star of nearly all its gas, leaving behind a hot, dense core - what Klement and his team refer to as the "stellar corpse."</p>



<p>Until now, the existence of these stripped stars was largely theoretical, as detection proved elusive due to their faintness and close proximity to their bright companions. However, the precision of the CHARA Array has enabled astronomers to directly observe the remnants of stellar cannibalism for the first time.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stripped-stars">Stripped stars</h2>



<p>In his two-year observation program, Klement discovered faint light from stripped companions in nine out of 37 surveyed Be stars, focusing on seven targets to track the orbital motion around the Be stars.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The orbits are important because they allow us to determine the masses of stellar pairs,” explained Klement. “Our mass measurements indicate that stripped stars lost almost everything. In the case of the star HR2142, the stripped star probably went from 10 times the mass of the Sun down to about one solar mass.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-nbsp">Broader implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The findings from this survey not only confirm the cannibalistic nature of some binary star systems, but also open new avenues for understanding more about star evolution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This survey of Be stars - and the discovery of nine faint companion stars - truly demonstrates the power of CHARA,” said Alison Peck, a program director in the National Science Foundation’s Astronomical Sciences Division. “Using the array's exceptional angular resolution and high dynamic range allows us to answer questions about star formation and evolution that have never been possible to answer before.”</p>



<p>Douglas Gies, director of the CHARA Array, noted that the research has finally uncovered a key hidden stage in the lives of close stellar pairs.</p>



<p>“The CHARA Array survey of the Be stars has revealed directly that these stars were created through a wholesale transformation by mass transfer,” said Gies. “We are now seeing, for the first time, the result of the stellar feast that led to the stripped stars.”</p>



<p>The study is published in <em>The Astrophysical Journal</em>.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.epa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Environmental Protection Agency</a> (EPA) disclosed on February 1 that drinking water for approximately 70 million Americans has tested positive for PFAS (a type of chemicals used to make fluoropolymer coatings as well as products that resist heat, oil, stains, grease, and water), based on the latest findings from only a third of the country's public water systems.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This development underscores the urgency for the Biden administration to establish drinking water standards for these toxic "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forever-chemicals-are-raining-down-all-over-the-world/">forever chemicals</a>."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-environmental-justice-campaign">Environmental justice campaign</h2>



<p>In 2020, President Joe Biden pledged to set a PFAS drinking water standard as part of his environmental justice campaign plan, a commitment highlighted by EPA's recent data release.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The 2023 tests, involving 3,700 water systems under&nbsp; EPA’s Fifth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR5), mark a critical step in understanding the prevalence of PFAS, with 33 percent of the systems showing contamination.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reducing-pfas-pollution-nbsp">Reducing PFAS pollution&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Scott Faber, senior vice president for Government Affairs at the <a href="https://www.ewg.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Environmental Working Group</a> (EWG), emphasized the comprehensive measures needed to tackle PFAS pollution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“There are many other steps we must take to reduce PFAS pollution, including ending non-essential uses of PFAS, ending industrial discharges of PFAS into the air and water, cleaning up legacy PFAS pollution, and properly disposing of PFAS waste,” said Faber.</p>



<p>The proposed PFAS drinking water standard, announced by the EPA in March 2023, aims to establish science-based limits for six PFAS compounds known for their adverse health effects, including cancer and immune system damage.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-thousands-of-known-contaminated-sites-nbsp">Thousands of known contaminated sites&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Highlighting the extensive nature of PFAS contamination, a 2020 EWG study estimated that over 200 million Americans are exposed to PFOA or PFOS in their drinking water at levels of 1 part per trillion (ppt) or higher, despite EPA reports only acknowledging PFAS detections at 4 ppt or higher.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The EWG’s PFAS contamination map reveals that as of February 5, there are 5,021 known contaminated sites across 50 states, the District of Columbia, and four territories.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-health-risks">Human health risks</h2>



<p>PFAS, due to their persistent nature, pose significant health risks, including immune system suppression, increased cancer risk, harm to fetal development, and reduced vaccine effectiveness. The <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/index.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a> (CDC) has detected PFAS in the blood of 99 percent of Americans, including newborns.</p>



<p>“Every week new research highlights the detrimental effects of PFAS on human health and the environment and underscores the need for immediate action to protect drinking water,” Tasha Stoiber, Ph.D., a senior scientist at EWG.</p>



<p>For individuals concerned about PFAS in their tap water, home filtration systems have been identified as an effective means of protection. EWG researchers have evaluated the performance of various water filters in reducing PFAS levels, providing a valuable resource for those seeking to mitigate their exposure.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cabrieres-biota-insights-from-the-ordovician">Cabrières Biota: Insights from the Ordovician</h2>



<p>The discovery took place in the scenic Montagne Noire region, within the Hérault department, where Eric Monceret and Sylvie Monceret-Goujon, the amateur paleontologists, stumbled upon what is now considered one of the richest and most diverse fossil sites of its time. </p>



<p>"We've been prospecting and searching for fossils since the age of twenty," Eric shared. Sylvie added, "When we came across this amazing biota, we understood the importance of the discovery and went from amazement to excitement." </p>



<p>Their find, featuring over 400 fossils, is remarkable not only for the sheer quantity but for the exceptional state of preservation, including rare soft elements such as digestive systems and cuticles.</p>

<p>In the grand tapestry of the cosmos, planets orbit their stars in patterns that have long captivated astronomers. Traditionally, it's understood that planets in systems like our own maintain stable orbits. </p>



<p>Yet, emerging evidence suggests a more dynamic scenario in the early stages of planetary systems. Some planets may wander from their initial locations, moving inward or outward, a process known as planetary migration.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-enigmatic-radius-valley">The enigmatic radius valley</h2>



<p>This phenomenon could shed light on a longstanding enigma in astronomy: the peculiar scarcity of exoplanets about twice the size of Earth, a phenomenon referred to as the radius valley or gap. </p>



<p>While the universe seems teeming with planets smaller and larger than this specific size, those that fall within this middle ground are notably rare.</p>



<p>Remo Burn, an exoplanet researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (<a href="https://www.mpia.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MPIA</a>) in Heidelberg, and the lead author of this study, recalls, “Six years ago, a reanalysis of data from the Kepler space telescope revealed a shortage of exoplanets with sizes around two Earth radii.” </p>



<p>This observation, which mystified researchers, aligned with predictions made by Burn and others, hinting at an underlying pattern in planetary formation and evolution.</p>



<p>Christoph Mordasini, a collaborator from the National Centre of Competence in Research (<a href="https://nccr-planets.ch/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NCCR PlanetS</a>) and a figurehead at the <a href="https://www.unibe.ch/index_eng.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bern</a>, reflects on the genesis of this hypothesis during his tenure at MPIA. </p>



<p>This collaboration between MPIA and the University of Bern has been pivotal in exploring these cosmic phenomena.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-planetary-migration">The role of planetary migration</h2>



<p>The prevailing theory to explain the radius valley posits that planets might lose portions of their atmospheres due to stellar irradiation, particularly losing volatile gases like hydrogen and helium. However, Burn emphasizes that this theory does not fully account for the role of planetary migration.</p>



<p>The concept of planetary migration, recognized for over four decades, suggests that planets can shift positions within their solar systems under certain conditions. </p>



<p>The extent of this migration and its impact on the structure of planetary systems are crucial in understanding the formation of the radius valley.</p>



<p>The gap in planet sizes delineates two distinct classes of exoplanets: rocky worlds known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/super-earth-discovered-in-the-habitable-zone-of-its-star/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">super-Earths</a> and the larger, gaseous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neptune-like-exoplanets-atmospheres-interesting-earth-size-neighbors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sub-Neptunes</a>. </p>



<p>“We do not have this class of exoplanets in the Solar System,” Burn notes, highlighting a gap in our understanding of these distant worlds' structure and composition.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-contribution-of-sub-neptunes">Contribution of sub-Neptunes</h2>



<p>Despite uncertainties about their precise nature, it's generally agreed that sub-Neptunes have much thicker atmospheres than their rocky counterparts. </p>



<p>The question remains: do these differences in atmospheric thickness contribute to the radius gap, or do they indicate divergent formation pathways for these two types of planets?</p>



<p>Julia Venturini from <a href="https://www.unige.ch/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Geneva University</a>, a key player in the PlanetS collaboration and leader of a pivotal 2020 study, offers a compelling conclusion. </p>



<p>“Based on simulations we already published in 2020, the latest results indicate and confirm that the evolution of sub-Neptunes after their birth significantly contributes to the observed radius valley.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-icy-beginnings-to-atmospheric-giants">From icy beginnings to atmospheric giants</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/does-exoplanet-k2-18-have-the-right-conditions-to-support-alien-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sub-Neptunes</a>, born in the frigid outskirts of their solar systems where they receive minimal warmth from their stars, are hypothesized to undergo a significant transformation as they migrate closer to their stars. </p>



<p>The warmth thaws their icy compositions, leading to the formation of thick water vapor atmospheres. </p>



<p>This transformative process increases the planets' radii, as observations used to measure planetary sizes cannot distinguish between the planet's solid core and its dense atmospheric layer.</p>



<p>Concurrently, this research also explores the phenomenon where rocky planets appear to 'shrink' due to atmospheric loss, further contributing to the scarcity of planets with sizes around twice that of Earth's radius. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dual-dynamics-of-planetary-migration">Dual dynamics of planetary migration</h2>

<p>Recent advancements in understanding water's behavior across a broad spectrum of conditions have enabled realistic simulations of sub-Neptunes, elucidating the development of their extensive atmospheres in warmer environments.</p>



<p>Henning finds it remarkable how molecular-level physical properties can influence astronomical processes on a grand scale, such as the formation of planetary atmospheres. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-water-worlds-and-the-search-for-life">Water worlds and the search for life</h2>



<p>Christoph Mordasini, contributing to the discussion, speculates that extending these results to cooler regions where water remains liquid could hint at the existence of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-finds-17-exoplanets-that-have-oceans-and-possibly-alien-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water worlds</a> with deep oceans. </p>



<p>These planets, potentially <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-planet-discovered-with-an-ocean-not-far-from-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">harboring life</a>, would be prime candidates for the search for biomarkers due to their significant sizes.</p>



<p>However, the journey of discovery is far from over. While the simulations align closely with observed size distributions and accurately position the radius gap, discrepancies remain. </p>



<p>For example, an excess of ice planets are calculated to be too close to their central stars. Yet, these inconsistencies are not viewed as setbacks but rather as opportunities to deepen our understanding of planetary migration.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-of-planetary-migration">Implications of planetary migration</h2>

<p>These modifications, particularly in genes crucial for fertility, embryonic development, neurodevelopment, and hormone regulation, are associated with increased incidences of birth defects and disorders, including neurodevelopmental and metabolic issues.</p>



<p>“We identified regions of the sperm epigenome that are associated with the serum levels of DDE (chemicals that form when DDT breaks down) and this association follows a dose-response trend. I think that's quite striking, in that the more DDE you’re exposed to, the higher the chromatin, or DNA methylation defects are in the sperm,” said lead author Ariane Lismer, an expert in embryogenesis and epigenetic inheritance at McGill.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-significance-nbsp">Study significance&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Tiaan de Jager, PhD, commented on the dilemma, emphasizing the necessity of house spraying in malaria-endemic areas while also acknowledging the need for alternative disease control methods.</p>



<p>The study also draws attention to the broader implications of climate change, which exacerbates the spread of DDT through the so-called "grasshopper effect," illustrating how this toxin can travel and persist in colder regions, particularly the Arctic food chain.</p>

<p>Furthermore, the experts advocate for a more inclusive approach to child health and development, stressing the importance of considering the paternal role. <p>“We tend to think all fathers have to do is fertilize. But in fact, we forget that half of that genome and epigenome comes from the fathers, and half of it comes from the mothers. What that epigenome does in embryo development is critical for normal development.”</p>

<p>Known for their elusive nature, beaked whales inhabit some of the most inaccessible regions on Earth, making them one of the least understood <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hairless-mammals-evolved-at-a-faster-pace/">mammals</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Among them, Baird's beaked whales have recently become the subject of a study that challenges long-held beliefs about their behavior and habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deep-ocean-diving">Deep ocean diving</h2>



<p>Beaked whales, encompassing 24 known species, have traditionally been associated with deep ocean waters far from land. </p>



<p>These creatures are renowned for their remarkable diving capabilities, with a Cuvier's beaked whale holding the record for the deepest mammalian dive at 2,992 meters and the longest dive lasting 222 minutes. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surprising-behavior-nbsp">Surprising behavior&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In the latest study, led by whale biologists Olga Filatova and Ivan Fedutin from the <a href="https://www.sdu.dk/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Southern Denmark</a>, a population of Baird's beaked whales were found in shallower waters than previously observed. This significant discovery came about during an expedition to the Commander Islands in 2008. Filatova and Fedutin stumbled upon a group of Baird's beaked whales near the coast.</p>



<p>"We were there to look for killer whales and humpback whales, so we just noted that we had seen a group of Baird's beaked whales and didn't do much about it. But we also saw them in the following years, and after five years, we suspected that it was a stable community frequently visiting the same area," said Filatova.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"We saw them every year until 2020, when Covid 19 prevented us from going back to the Commander Islands."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-habitats-nbsp">Unexpected habitats&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The experts ultimately found that this population of beaked whales frequents coastal areas within four kilometers from land, residing in waters less than 300 meters deep - conditions that are uncharacteristic for their species.</p>



<p>The presence of Baird's beaked whales in such unexpected habitats suggests a remarkable adaptation and challenges the conventional wisdom that all beaked whales solely inhabit deep, offshore waters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"It means that you cannot expect all individuals within a specific species to behave the same way. This makes it difficult to plan species protection - in this case, for example, you cannot plan based on the assumption that beaked whales only live far out in deep sea. We have shown that they can also live in shallow and coastal waters. There may be other different habitats that we are not aware of yet," said Filatova.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-social-learning-behavior">Social learning behavior</h2>



<p>The observations also shed light on the fascinating social dynamics and learning behaviors within whale populations. The study suggests that the Baird's beaked whales' preference for shallow coastal waters may have emerged through social learning mechanisms, particularly through "local enhancement."&nbsp;</p>



<p>This process, where animals learn the value of a location by following their peers, appears to have led to the formation of a cultural tradition among the Baird's beaked whales at the Commander Islands. The tradition includes preferences for habitats and prey, marking the first time such a cultural phenomenon has been observed among beaked whales.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-transient-whales">Transient whales</h2>



<p>The experts meticulously documented 186 individuals of the Baird's beaked whale species, distinguishing between transient whales, observed only once, and residents, spotted multiple times over the years.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Interestingly, some transient whales were observed in the shallow waters after interacting with residents, suggesting that these encounters facilitated learning about the area.</p>



<p>"The transients are not as familiar with local conditions as the residents, and therefore, they usually seek food at the depths that are normal for their species. But we actually observed some transients in the shallow area," said Filatova.</p>



<p>"These were individuals who had some form of social contact with the residents. It must be in that contact that they learned about the shallow water and its advantages."</p>

<p>The research points out that large herbivores are instrumental in nutrient cycling, maintaining open habitats, and controlling smaller animal populations. A pivotal discovery is the role of these animals in enhancing ecosystem diversity by creating more structurally varied vegetation.</p>



<p>“The positive impact on variability in vegetation structure is particularly noteworthy, given that environmental heterogeneity is known as a universal driver of biodiversity. While our study mostly looked at the impact of megafauna on small scales, our findings suggest that they promote biodiversity even on the landscape level,” said lead author Jonas Trepel, a PhD student at Aarhus.</p>



<p>The study explores how large herbivores, through their interactions with vegetation, such as consumption of biomass, breaking of woody plants, and trampling, influence ecosystem structure, an effect that varies with the animal's size.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-local-plant-diversity-nbsp">Local plant diversity&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The research, covering a broad range of body sizes (45-4500 kg), provides insights into how the presence of larger herbivores tends to enhance local plant diversity, whereas smaller species may have the opposite effect.</p>



<p>“Large herbivores can eat lower-quality food such as branches and stems, which may result in proportionally greater impacts on dominant plant species and thus give less competitive plants better odds in their struggle for sunlight and space,” explained senior author Erick Lundgren, an ecologist at Aarhus.</p>



<p>“These findings support the expectation that many small herbivores cannot fully compensate for the loss of a few large ones," added Elizabeth le Roux, also a senior author of the study and expert in megafauna ecology and restoration.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ecosystem-restoration">Ecosystem restoration</h2>



<p>This meta-analysis, drawing from 297 studies and 5,990 data points, leverages a wide dataset to identify overarching patterns in how megafauna influence ecosystems, particularly through exclosure studies that compare fenced areas excluding large animals to unfenced ones.</p>



<p>The research underscores the necessity of integrating large herbivores into conservation and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/young-mussels-are-ideal-for-ecosystem-restoration/">ecosystem restoration</a> efforts, given their essential roles in promoting biodiversity and ecosystem resilience. Moreover, there are potential benefits of reintroducing large animals to protected areas, such as enhancing ecosystem dynamics and adaptability to global changes.</p>



<p>The study concludes with a call to not only protect the remaining megafauna species but also to actively work towards their restoration, emphasizing the critical importance of these animals in maintaining ecological balance and biodiversity, especially in the face of accelerating environmental changes.</p>

<p>A team of researchers from <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University College London</a> (UCL) has recently made an alarming discovery, finding that pollutants from burning fossil fuels are embedded in coral skeletons. </p>



<p>This significant finding, published in the <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2024.170665" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Science of the Total Environment</em></a> journal, highlights <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-corals-and-reefs-are-showing-surprising-resilience-as-global-waters-warm/">corals</a> from Illa Grossa Bay near the Columbretes Islands in the Mediterranean Sea as carriers of carbon particles - specifically, fly-ash or spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCPs) from fossil fuel combustion. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-induced-environmental-changes-nbsp">Human-induced environmental changes&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Such contamination is a stark indicator of human environmental impact and serves as a historical marker for the onset of the Anthropocene epoch, a period defined by human activities being the dominant influence on climate and the environment.</p>



<p>Corals have long been valued in paleoclimate research for their ability to record environmental data analogous to tree rings, given their slow and regular growth. While traditionally used to study past climatic conditions like water temperature and chemistry, the detection of pollutant particles in corals marks a novel method for examining human-induced environmental changes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-historic-rate-of-fossil-fuel-combustion">Historic rate of fossil fuel combustion</h2>



<p>“The discovery of these pollutants embedded in coral skeletons extend over decades and paint a clear picture of how extensive human influence is on the environment,” said lead author Lucy Roberts, an environmental geochemist at UCL. “It’s the first time we’ve been able to see this kind of contaminant in corals, and its appearance in these deposits parallel the historic rate of fossil fuel combustion in the region.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cladocora-caespitosa">Cladocora caespitosa</h2>



<p>The study focused on the coral species Cladocora caespitosa, collected from a reef off Castelló, Spain. This coral species is notable for being the only Mediterranean coral capable of forming large reefs, growing at an average rate of about 0.3 centimeters per year.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The selected site, positioned nearly 60 kilometers from the shore and within a protected marine reserve, minimizes potential local contamination influences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-corals-as-natural-archives">Corals as natural archives</h2>



<p>In the laboratory, the coral samples were dissolved in acid to isolate any pollutant particulates within the skeletons. The researchers utilized microscopes and x-ray analysis to identify and analyze the SCPs, finding a notable increase in contamination between approximately 1969 and 1992, coinciding with rapid industrialization and increased coal consumption in Europe.</p>



<p>This correlation between coral SCP contamination and historical pollution levels supports the concept of using corals as natural archives to monitor pollution trends over time. The study's findings contribute to the broader scientific endeavor to define the Anthropocene epoch, advocating for the inclusion of SCP presence as a key marker.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-nbsp">Broader implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“As it becomes clearer that humans have altered the natural environment to an unprecedented level, these pollutants act as indelible markers, indicating the start of the Anthropocene epoch,” Roberts said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This is valuable to researchers trying to better understand the history of human impact on the natural world and serves as a powerful reminder of how extensive human influence is over the environment,” she concluded.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The researchers found that the monarchs occupied a mere 2.2 acres during the 2023-2024 winter season, a stark reduction from the 5.5 acres observed in the prior year.</p>



<p>This decrease has alarmed conservationists and scientists who monitor the area of forest where the monarch butterflies hibernate in each winter. This measurement serves as a crucial scientific indicator of the species' population status.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, land-use changes and the widespread application of herbicides in the United States have further exacerbated the loss of milkweed and other nectar plants vital for the adult monarchs’ sustenance.</p>



<p>Conservation measures must be intensified</p>



<p>"Fewer monarchs hibernating in their traditional forest habitat in Mexico greatly concerns all of us. It's critical that all communities, governments, non-governmental organizations, scientists, and others continue to strengthen our conservation and protection efforts to support the monarch's unique migration," said Jorge Rickards, general director of WWF Mexico.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"This is not the first time we've observed changes in the locations of the largest monarch colonies. It's telling us that we need to intensify conservation and restoration measures not only in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, but also outside of it."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fluctuating-population-numbers">Fluctuating population numbers</h2>



<p>The largest monarch colonies of this season were identified outside the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, with notable areas in the Palomas and Peña Ahumada sanctuaries in the State of Mexico, and a traditionally large colony in El Rosario, Sierra Campanario sanctuary, Michoacán.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The 2023-2024 data records the second-smallest area occupied by monarch butterfly colonies in Mexico since monitoring began in 1993, surpassed only by the 1.7 acres observed in the 2013-2014 season. The peak population was recorded in the 1996-1997 season, with an expansive 45 acres monitored.</p>



<p>The monarch butterfly's migration is one of nature's most astonishing phenomena, with some individuals traveling nearly 3,000 miles from southern Canada and the northern and central United States to their overwintering sites in Michoacán and the State of Mexico.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-valuable-forest-ecosystems">Valuable forest ecosystems</h2>



<p>These forests not only provide sanctuary for the monarchs but also support the regional communities by improving water quality in the Cutzamala System, benefiting more than 6 million people in Mexico City and its metropolitan area. Moreover, these forest ecosystems are a haven for biodiversity, home to a diverse range of species including 132 birds, 56 mammals, 432 vascular plants, and 211 fungi.</p>

<p>Published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1039/D3EM00439B" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Environmental Science Processes &amp; Impacts</em></a> by The Royal Society of Chemistry, the research underscores the potential air quality hazards posed by fragranced cleaning products within homes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These products release a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), some of which are dangerous or can transform into harmful secondary pollutants. </p>



<p>Despite the rising popularity of "green" cleaners under the belief of their health and environmental benefits, the study conducted by the <a href="https://www.york.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of York</a> challenges this assumption.</p>



<p>The investigation focused on comparing the VOC output of 10 traditional and 13 "green" cleaning products, finding that the latter tend to release more monoterpenes. </p>



<p>This increase in monoterpene emissions can lead to higher concentrations of secondary pollutants like formaldehyde and peroxyacyl nitrates.</p>



<p>These chemicals pose significant health risks, including respiratory issues and potential skin irritation. Long-term exposure to certain pollutants like formaldehyde may even increase cancer risk.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-green-cleaning-products-and-misleading-marketing">"Green" cleaning products and misleading marketing</h2>



<p>“Our research found there is no strong evidence to suggest that clean green products are better for indoor air quality compared to regular products. In fact, there was very little difference,” said lead author Ellen Harding-Smith, an Environmental Chemistry researcher at the Department of Environment &amp; Geography.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Many consumers are being misled by the marketing of these products and could be damaging the air quality in their homes as a result - potentially putting their health at risk. For so many products on the supermarket shelves, green doesn’t mean clean.”</p>



<p>To mitigate the potential harm caused by these products, Harding-Smith advises manufacturers to disclose more information about their ingredients and to educate consumers on improving indoor air quality, such as increasing ventilation and opening windows during use. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
