<p>A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new and convincing evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.</p>



<p>The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that some unknown, nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.</p>



<p>“This finding by Perseverance is the closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars. The identification of a potential biosignature on the Red Planet is a groundbreaking discovery, and one that will advance our understanding of Mars,” said acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. </p>



<p>“NASA’s commitment to conducting Gold Standard Science will continue as we pursue our goal of putting American boots on Mars’ rocky soil.”</p>



<p>The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. </p>



<p>After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



<p>Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.</p>



<p>Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.</p>



<p>Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.</p>



<p>These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.</p>



<p>Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. </p>



<p>That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



<p>On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. </p>



<p>Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.</p>



<p>The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.</p>



<p>None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



<p>A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. </p>



<p>NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.</p>



<p>The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.</p>



<p>The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.</p>



<p>Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



<p>The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.</p>



<p>Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.</p>



<p>The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.</p>



<p>Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



<p>“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. </p>



<p>Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



<p>If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. </p>



<p>That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.</p>



<p>If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.</p>



<p>Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.</p>



<p>The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



<p>The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. </p>



<p>They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.</p>



<p>Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.</p>



<p>PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.</p>



<p>As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.</p>

<p>Recent research spearheaded by the University of Tokyo has unveiled a significant connection between bullied kids and the early stages of psychotic episodes. </p>



<p>This disturbing study reveals that kids who are bullied by their peers have an increased risk of experiencing these early psychotic symptoms, while also exhibit <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bullying-shrinks-brain-anxiety/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lower levels</a> of a crucial neurotransmitter in the brain region responsible for emotion regulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-neurotransmitters-bullying-and-kids-brains">Neurotransmitters, bullying, and kids' brains</h2>



<p>The neurotransmitter in question plays a pivotal role in transmitting nerve impulses for communication by nerve cells. </p>



<p>This discovery suggests that it could be a potential target for pharmaceutical treatments designed to mitigate the risk of developing psychotic disorders. </p>



<p>Psychosis, characterized by a disconnection from reality, incoherent speech and behavior, and often accompanied by hallucinations and delusions, is a hallmark of severe psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glutamate-levels-and-mental-health">Glutamate levels and mental health</h2>



<p>Delving into the neurological and psychiatric aspects of such disorders, researchers have noted that individuals facing their first psychotic episode or those with treatable schizophrenia show diminished levels of glutamate. </p>



<p>This neurotransmitter, found in abundance in the brain's anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), is integral to a host of functions including learning, memory, and mood regulation. The ACC itself is crucial for managing emotions, making decisions, and cognitive control.</p>



<p>Alterations in glutamate levels have been linked to various psychiatric disorders, indicating that monitoring these levels can offer insights into the underlying mechanisms of these conditions and their potential treatments. </p>



<p>However, the connection between altered glutamate levels in individuals at high risk of psychosis and the impact of bullying during adolescence has been less clear until now.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bullied-kids-and-psychotic-behavior">Bullied kids and psychotic behavior</h2>



<p>To explore this, researchers employed magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to measure glutamate levels in the ACC region of Japanese adolescents. </p>



<p>By assessing changes in these levels over time and correlating them with experiences of bullying or its absence, the study aimed to shed light on the relationship between brain chemistry and the psychological impact of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bullying-mental-health-overcome/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bullying</a>.</p>



<p>The methodology involved tracking bullying victimization through questionnaires and using psychiatric measurements to evaluate these experiences, focusing on the frequency, nature, and overall mental health impact of physical or verbal aggression.</p>



<p>The findings were revealing: <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/infants-identify-bully/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bullying</a> was linked to higher levels of subclinical psychotic experiences in early adolescence. </p>



<p>These symptoms, though not meeting the full criteria for a clinical diagnosis, include hallucinations, paranoia, or significant changes in thinking or behavior, impacting well-being and functionality.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strategies-to-combat-effects-of-bullying">Strategies to combat effects of bullying</h2>



<p>Naohiro Okada, the lead author of the study and a project associate professor at the <a href="https://ircn.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tokyo</a>’s International Research Center for Neurointelligence, emphasized the importance of studying these subclinical experiences. </p>



<p>"Studying these subclinical psychotic experiences is important for us to understand the early stages of psychotic disorders and for identifying individuals who may be at increased risk for developing a clinical psychotic illness later on," Okada stated.</p>



<p>The study found a notable association between higher levels of subclinical psychotic experiences and lower levels of anterior cingulate glutamate in early adolescence. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protecting-bullied-kids-a-call-to-action">Protecting bullied kids: A call to action</h2>



<p>This link underscores the importance of addressing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bullying-race-sexual-orientation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bullying</a> in schools through anti-bullying programs that promote positive social interactions and reduce aggression, as Okada suggested. </p>



<p>Such initiatives can foster a safe, supportive environment, potentially reducing the incidence of bullying and its adverse effects.</p>



<p>Moreover, Okada highlighted the need for supporting bullied adolescents through counseling, peer support, and other mental health resources to help them cope and build resilience. </p>



<p>While pharmaceutical interventions targeting the identified neurotransmitter imbalance are a possibility, Okada also pointed to the potential of nonpharmacological approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy or mindfulness-based interventions.</p>



<p>In summary, this research illuminates the biochemical underpinnings of bullying's impact on mental health suggests options for both pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions to support at-risk adolescents. </p>



<p>By addressing the root causes and effects of bullying, we can hope to mitigate the risk of psychosis and improve the well-being of young individuals facing these challenges.</p>

<p>Food availability may be a catalyst for cultural transmission among <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/orangutans-are-starving-from-fruit-shortages/">orangutans</a>, according to the results of a new study. Based on 18 years of observations of wild orangutans in Borneo and Sumatra, the researchers identified a relationship between an animal's ecological environment, resource availability, and social learning behaviors.</p>



<p>The study was a collaborative effort by experts at the <a href="https://www.eva.mpg.de/index/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute of Evolutionary Anthropology</a> (MPI-EVA), the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior (MPI-AB), and the University of Leipzig. </p>



<p>"Social learning includes any learning that is influenced by the observation of or interaction with another individual," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>"Culture, hence, at its most basic definition can be described as 'socially transmitted innovations,' and more specifically as the sum of 'all behaviors and knowledge that are acquired and passed on within and between generations through social learning.'"&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-opportunities-for-social-learning-nbsp">Opportunities for social learning&nbsp;</h2>



<p>While investigating how male orangutans learn from others, the experts found that individuals who grew up in habitats with an abundance of food were more likely to pay attention to social information.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This finding indicates that an animal's ecological surroundings directly influence its opportunities for social learning, thereby affecting the likelihood of new behaviors becoming cultural innovations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We’ve shown that animal’s ecological environment and respective resource availability has knock-on effects on an individual’s social learning opportunities, but also on their propensity for social learning over evolutionary time,” said study first author Julia Mörchen, a doctoral student at the University of Leipzig.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nomadic-lifestyle">Nomadic lifestyle</h2>



<p>The research was focused on adult male orangutans, a demographic chosen for their unique life history traits. Once reaching maturity, male orangutans leave their birthplaces to lead nomadic lives, constantly learning to adapt to new environments. This migrant lifestyle makes them reliant on social learning to survive.</p>



<p>“This means that males are like perpetual tourists, so they have to constantly learn crucial behaviors, like what food is safe to eat, from experienced locals,” explained Mörchen. To learn new skills, the migrant males watch resident orangutans in a behavior known as “peering."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-insights-nbsp">Critical insights&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In both Borneo and Sumatra, instances of migrant males peering at local residents were closely monitored.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers discovered that males were more inclined to spend time near others and engage in peering when food was abundant. This provides evidence that an animal’s environment can modulate social learning, noted the researchers.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“When times are good, orangutans spend more time in close contact, and so there are more opportunities for social learning,” said Mörchen.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stable-food-resources-nbsp">Stable food resources&nbsp;</h2>



<p>A comparison between the Sumatran and Bornean populations further underscored the study's findings. Sumatran orangutans, living in areas with a high food supply, exhibited a higher rate of peering compared to their Bornean counterparts, who contend with less stable food resources.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This difference persisted even after accounting for the variations in food availability, indicating a deeper, possibly inherent propensity for social learning among Sumatran males.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-limitation">Study limitation</h2>



<p>The researchers pointed out that the study cannot disentangle the mechanisms driving the difference in the propensities to attend to social information.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It could be the result of developmental effects, of Bornean and Sumatran orangutans growing up under different ecological conditions,” said Mörchen. “Or, it could be the result of genetic differences between the species that split approximately 674 thousand years ago, or a combination of both.”</p>



<p>“Our study provides a glimpse into how ecology may affect cultural transmission," said study senior author Caroline Schuppli. "We show that availability of food modulates social learning opportunities and thus how likely new behaviors are to become cultural,"&nbsp;</p>

<p>The global carbon market's fastest-growing offset, which promotes the distribution of efficient cookstoves in developing nations to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, significantly overstates the stoves' carbon savings - by a tenfold margin, a recent investigation has revealed.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-confidence-in-the-carbon-market-nbsp">Confidence in the carbon market&nbsp;</h2>



<p>This discrepancy poses a significant challenge to combating climate change by enabling companies to claim climate goals and market “carbon neutral” products without actual reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. It also erodes confidence in the carbon market, thereby affecting the market’s capability to sustainably fund efficient stoves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-research-nbsp">Focus of the research&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study, published in <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41893-023-01259-6" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Nature Sustainability</em></a>, represents the first thorough, quantitative evaluation of any offset project type. Researchers at the <a href="https://www.berkeley.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Berkeley</a> scrutinized five methodologies used to assess cookstove emission reductions against published studies and independent analyses. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clean-cooking-and-social-justice-nbsp">Clean cooking and social justice&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Daniel Kammen, the James and Katherine Lau Distinguished Professor of Sustainability at UC Berkeley, emphasized the critical link between clean cooking and global strategies for social justice and climate, noting the significant attention the pre-published study has garnered.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/clean-cooking-could-save-half-a-million-lives-each-year/">Clean cooking</a> now figures very centrally on national decarbonization and sustainable development goal strategies, global funding cycles, and the political agenda of national leaders," said Kammen. "Integrating the science, human rights, and economics of clean cooking is now critically linked to both social justice and climate strategies around the planet.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-offset-credits">Carbon offset credits</h2>



<p>The popularity of cookstove offsets stems from the global reliance on solid fuels or kerosene by approximately 2.4 billion people, contributing to millions of premature deaths and around 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions annually. In the first ten months of 2023, efficient cookstoves constituted the voluntary carbon market's fastest-growing project type and the second-largest share of issued credits.</p>



<p>Annelise Gill-Wiehl, a UC Berkeley Ph.D. candidate and the study’s first author, highlighted the potential of accurately estimated carbon offsets to support the distribution of efficient stoves, reducing fuel costs and potentially saving lives.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Estimated correctly, carbon offsets have the potential to support the free or subsidized distribution of efficient stoves that reduce time spent collecting firewood or the cost of purchasing fuel,” she said.&nbsp;</p>

They developed a method for assessing offset quality, which can guide buyers, developers, and regulators towards high-quality credits that genuinely benefit health and climate goals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-findings-nbsp">Key findings &nbsp;</h2>



<p>In the sample covering 40% of cookstove credits, the team found that cookstoves were over-credited by a factor of 9.2 times. Across all cookstove offset credits from the studied methodologies, cookstoves were over-credited by approximately 10.6 times.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Gold Standard’s Metered methodology, which directly monitors fuel use and credits the cleanest stoves, was found to be the most aligned with the study's estimates, overvalued by only a factor of 1.5. This methodology shows the greatest potential for emissions abatement and health benefits.</p>



<p>This investigation not only documents quality issues in the offset market but also provides actionable recommendations for trading in quality credits that align with Sustainable Development Goal progress, offering a paradigm shift towards clean fuels and stoves that can significantly support health and climate benefits.</p>

<p>In our exploration of age-related dementia throughout history, a common belief is that this affliction is as old as humanity itself. </p>



<p>However, research led by the University of Southern California (<a href="https://www.usc.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">USC</a>) suggests a different history behind this disease.</p>



<p>This study delves into classical Greek and Roman medical texts, revealing that severe memory loss, now almost epidemic, was surprisingly rare around 2,000 to 2,500 years ago.</p>



<p>This finding strengthens the theory that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/diet-plays-a-major-role-in-preventing-alzheimers-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alzheimer’s</a> and related dementias are largely products of modern lifestyles and environments. </p>



<p>Factors like sedentary behavior and air pollution are significant contributors. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-dementia-throughout-history">Tracking dementia throughout history</h2>



<p><a href="https://gero.usc.edu/faculty/finch/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Caleb Finch</a>, the study's first author and a University Professor at the USC <a href="https://gero.usc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Leonard Davis School of Gerontology</a>, sheds light on the ancient Greeks' understanding of memory issues. </p>



<p>“The ancient Greeks had very, very few — but we found them — mentions of something that would be like mild cognitive impairment,” said Finch.</p>



<p>They acknowledged mild cognitive impairments, akin to what we identify today, but nothing on the scale of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/medical-breakthrough-new-vaccine-may-prevent-alzheimers-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alzheimer’s</a>, which involves substantial loss of memory, speech, and reasoning.</p>



<p>The study's journey through ancient medical literature, including works by Hippocrates and his disciples, reveals intriguing insights. </p>



<p>These texts extensively catalog ailments common in older people, such as deafness and dizziness, yet surprisingly omit significant memory loss. However, as we shift to ancient Rome, the narrative changes slightly. </p>



<p>Notable figures like Galen and Pliny the Elder begin to document instances of memory decline in older populations. </p>



<p>For example, Galen observed learning difficulties in some 80-year-olds, while Pliny the Elder recounted a senator who forgot his own name. Cicero, too, noted a kind of "elder silliness," though he didn't associate it with all older men.</p>



<p>“When we got to the Romans, and we uncovered at least four statements that suggest rare cases of advanced dementia -- we can’t tell if it’s Alzheimer’s. So, there was a progression going from the ancient Greeks to the Romans," Finch explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-environmental-factors-and-cognitive-decline">Environmental factors and cognitive decline</h2>



<p>Finch, alongside co-author Stanley Burstein, a historian at <a href="https://www.calstate.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">California State University</a>, Los Angeles, postulates that the denser Roman cities and increased pollution might have escalated cognitive decline cases. </p>



<p>The use of lead in cooking vessels, water pipes, and even wine sweetening by Roman aristocrats likely exacerbated the issue, given lead's neurotoxic properties.</p>



<p>To further their understanding, Finch didn't limit his research to the ancient Western world. Lacking demographic data for ancient Greece and Rome, he turned to a modern comparison: the Tsimane Amerindians of the Bolivian Amazon. </p>



<p>The Tsimane's preindustrial, physically active lifestyle mirrors that of the ancient civilizations, and significantly, they exhibit extremely low <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-abdominal-fat-linked-to-alzheimers-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dementia</a> rates. </p>



<p>An international team, including Margaret Gatz, a professor at the USC Leonard Davis School, found that only about 1% of older Tsimane people suffer from dementia, a stark contrast to the 11% incidence in the United States' elder population.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-dementia-in-the-light-of-history">Rethinking dementia in the light of history</h2>

<p>“The Tsimane data, which is quite deep, is very valuable,” Finch said. “This is the best-documented large population of older people that have minimal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/loss-of-smell-may-be-the-earliest-warning-of-alzheimers-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dementia</a>, all of which indicates that the environment is a huge determinant on dementia risk. They give us a template for asking these questions.”</p>



<p>This research revisits our historical understanding of dementia while providing suggestions for future studies, potentially reshaping our approach to preventing and managing this condition in the modern world.</p>

<p>As discussed above, dementia describes a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking, and social abilities severely enough to interfere with daily functioning. </p>



<p>Dementia is not a single disease but rather a general term that encompasses various specific medical conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, observed throughout history.</p>



<p>This horrible infliction results from damage to brain cells, which affects their ability to communicate with each other, thereby affecting behavior, feelings, and thoughts.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Causes and risk factors</h3>



<p>Several factors contribute to the development of dementia. Age is the most significant risk factor, with most cases occurring in people 65 years or older. </p>



<p>However, dementia can also affect younger people. Genetic factors play a role, as certain types of dementia run in families. </p>



<p>Other risk factors include smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and obesity. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/psychoactive-drug-relieves-symptoms-of-traumatic-brain-injury/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Traumatic brain injury</a> may also increase the risk of developing certain types of dementia.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/shark-attacks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">International Shark Attack File</a> (ISAF) at the <a href="https://www.ufl.edu/">University of Florida</a>, a comprehensive database tracking attacks worldwide, reported 69 unprovoked shark encounters for the year. This figure stands above the average of 63 shark attacks noted over the past five years, yet it aligns with the historical trend observed over the long term.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rise-in-fatalities-nbsp">Rise in fatalities&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The year witnessed a notable rise in fatal unprovoked shark attacks, with ten recorded instances, a significant jump from the five fatalities documented in the prior year. Australia was particularly affected, where a large portion of these tragic events took place.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Despite accounting for only 22% of global attacks, Australia was the location for 40% of the fatal incidents. Additionally, the United States, the Bahamas, Egypt, Mexico, and New Caledonia each reported fatal attacks.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-widespread-encounters-nbsp">Widespread encounters&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Non-fatal encounters were recorded in various locations, including Costa Rica, Colombia, Brazil, New Zealand, Seychelles, Turks and Caicos, Ecuador (specifically in The Galápagos Islands), and South Africa.</p>



<p>“This is within the range of the normal number of bites, though the fatalities are a bit unnerving this year,” said Gavin Naylor, who heads the <a href="https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Florida Museum of Natural History</a>’s shark research program.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unprovoked-attacks-nbsp">Unprovoked attacks&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In the United States alone, there were 36 unprovoked shark attacks, making up over half of the worldwide incidents. Among these, one fatal attack occurred in California and another in Hawaii. Consistently, Florida reported the highest number of shark encounters, with 16 documented cases.</p>



<p>The ISAF's annual report primarily focuses on unprovoked attacks, defined as incidents where a shark bites a human in its natural habitat without provocation. This distinction is crucial for understanding the inherent behavior of these marine predators.</p>



<p>“We’re biologists, and we want to understand the natural behavior of the animals - not the unnatural behavior,” explained Naylor.</p>



<p>Additionally, the ISAF recorded 22 provoked attacks within the same period, with spearfishing emerging as the most frequent activity during these encounters.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significant-risk-for-surfers">Significant risk for surfers</h2>



<p>The report highlighted a significant risk for surfers and those in Australia, noting three fatalities in 2023 at the Eyre Peninsula, a renowned surfing destination in Southern Australia known for its seal colonies and high concentration of white sharks.</p>



<p>“If a white shark is going after a seal and the seal knows it, the white shark hasn’t got a chance,” Naylor said. “Seals are really agile, so the only ones that get caught are the ones that are goofing off and flopping around on the surface minding their own business. And that’s kind of what a surfer looks like.”</p>



<p>Surfers constituted 42% of global shark bite victims, closely followed by swimmers and waders at 39%. The study also acknowledged the presence of bull sharks in Australian rivers, attributing one early 2023 fatality to this species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-beach-safety-nbsp">Beach safety&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Joe Miguez, a doctoral student in the Florida Program for Shark Research, emphasized the importance of beach safety, particularly in remote regions lacking established safety measures.</p>



<p>The majority of unprovoked shark attacks are believed to be "test bites," where sharks mistake humans for their usual prey. Despite the increase in attacks, the overall numbers remain consistent with the decade's average, underscoring the low probability of such incidents compared to other risks.</p>

<p>In an innovative approach to ecosystem restoration, marine biologist Jildou Schotanus has demonstrated that the establishment of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-freshwater-mussels-are-threatened-by-sea-level-rise/">mussel</a> beds in aquatic environments like the Wadden Sea can be significantly enhanced through the use of protective structures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Conducting her research at the <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1033407" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research</a> in Yerseke, Schotanus has brought to light the vital role of mussels as ecosystem engineers, capable of altering their surroundings to benefit not only themselves but also a wide array of other marine life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reshaping-ecosystems">Reshaping ecosystems</h2>



<p>Mussels are not merely inhabitants of their environments but are active participants in shaping them. By forming large banks, these bivalves create conditions that favor the settlement of other mussels, while simultaneously offering refuge and a habitat for various plants and animals.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The ability of mussels to trap silt and sand, as well as to reduce the force of waves during storms, underscores their importance in maintaining the ecological balance and integrity of marine ecosystems. "For this reason, there are lots of initiatives to restore mussel beds," said Schotanus. "But it is, usually, a daunting task!"</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-restoring-mussel-beds-nbsp">Restoring mussel beds&nbsp;</h2>



<p>One of the problems in restoring mussel beds is the type of mussel that is used, noted Schotanus. "In the past, adult mussels that were not used to dry conditions of intertidal mud flats were often used for this purpose. But if you suddenly try to get these mussels to settle on a mudflat that is exposed to air during low tide, where they also have to endure much more wave energy, they turn out to be unaccustomed to these conditions."&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Experiments we have done with very small mussels, the so-called mussel seed, show that these are still flexible enough to adapt to the rougher conditions on the tidal flats."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testing-various-strategies-nbsp">Testing various strategies&nbsp;</h2>



<p>On the banks of the Oosterschelde, Schotanus investigated how mussels could be given the best head start. She experimented with breakwaters, netting to keep hungry crabs away, and with coir mats to help the shellfish adhere to the bottom.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"All of these methods do work to some extent, but they are also very labor intensive," said Schotanus. She found that relatively simple fencing seemed the most efficient strategy. This method provides a sheltered environment for young mussels, promoting their survival and growth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildlife-interactions">Wildlife interactions</h2>



<p>An interesting aspect of Schotanus's study involves the response of avian species to the restoration structures. Using camera surveillance, the researchers observed that birds such as curlews and oystercatchers initially showed hesitation towards the unfamiliar installations. Over time, however, these birds adapted.</p>



<p>“They appear to get used to them after a while," said Schotanus. "Gulls found the larger quantities of shellfish near the fences very quickly anyway. Oystercatchers needed some time and curlews also only discovered after some time, that there were also many small crabs near the fences, which is their favorite food."</p>



<p>According to Schotanus, the most important lesson from her research is that in restoring mussel beds, you must take advantage of the positive interactions between the shellfish themselves. "Mussels simply find strength and safety in numbers. All our artificial tools have their drawbacks, so the simpler we can make it for the mussels, the better."</p>

<p>A new study conducted by researchers at the <a href="https://www.uni-bonn.de/en/university/university" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bonn</a> challenges the prevailing assumption that people deny climate change to justify their environmentally harmful behaviors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study involved an online experiment with 4,000 U.S. adults. The researchers uncovered no evidence to support the idea that climate change denial is a form of self-deception aimed at avoiding personal guilt over contributing to global heating.</p>



<p>The phenomenon of climate change denial is not insignificant, with a substantial number of individuals downplaying the impact of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-could-cause-one-billion-deaths-over-the-next-century/">climate change</a> or outright denying its human-induced causes.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significant-amount-of-people-deny-climate-change">Significant amount of people deny climate change</h2>



<p>According to the authors, human activities caused the recent warming of the Earth. </p>



<p>Despite the near-unanimous scientific consensus on this matter, a substantial part of the population denies or downplays the contribution of humans to climate change.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In a 2019 Pew study, 30% of U.S. adults said humans play only a partial role and 20% said no or a minor role in climate change," they reported.</p>



<p>The 2022 report <a href="https://climatecommunication.yale.edu/publications/climate-change-in-the-american-mind-beliefs-attitudes-spring-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Climate Change in the American Mind</a> finds similar results: a third of the respondents said that climate change is due to natural changes and is not caused mostly by human activities. </p>



<p>How can this discrepancy be explained?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-motivated-reasoning-nbsp">Motivated reasoning&nbsp;</h2>



<p>"Climate change is arguably one of the greatest challenges today. Although the scientific consensus is that human activities caused climate change, a substantial part of the population downplays or denies <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/indisputable-evidence-of-human-caused-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human responsibility</a>," wrote the study authors.</p>



<p>For example, a frequent flyer might dismiss the impact of their travel on the climate by assuming their actions make no significant difference or by doubting the evidence for human-caused climate change altogether.</p>



<p>A common hypothesis has been that climate change denial stems from a form of self-deception where individuals rationalize their behaviors to avoid cognitive dissonance.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Professor Florian Zimmermann, an economist at the University of Bonn, expounded on this thought process that allows individuals to maintain a positive self-image while continuing harmful behaviors. </p>

<p>Zimmermann and his colleague Lasse Stötzer conducted a series of online experiments with a representative sample of 4,000 US adults.</p>



<p>The experiments centered on a $20 donation. Randomly, the organizers assigned participants to one of two groups. </p>



<p>The first group's members could divide the $20 between two organizations fighting climate change. In contrast, the second group's participants had the option to keep the $20 for themselves and would actually receive the money at the end. </p>



<p>Zimmermann is a member of the <a href="https://econtribute.de/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ECONtribute Cluster of Excellence</a>, the <a href="https://www.crctr224.de/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Collaborative Research Center Transregio 224</a>, and the Transdisciplinary Research Area “Individuals &amp; Societies” at the University of Bonn.  </p>



<p>He explained, "Anyone who decides to keep the donation must justify that decision to themselves. One way to do that is to deny the existence of climate change."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-climate-change-denial-findings">Unexpected climate change denial findings</h2>



<p>Nearly half of the participants in the latter group chose to keep the money, which led researchers to question whether this choice was justified through subsequent denial of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-has-become-a-human-rights-issue/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a>.</p>



<p>Surprisingly, the researchers found no evidence that individuals who kept the money were more likely to deny climate change to rationalize their decision. </p>



<p>This contradicts the expectation that climate change denial is significantly driven by self-deception related to one's harmful environmental actions.</p>



<p>However, the study did hint at an alternative form of "motivated reasoning," suggesting that denial of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-evolution-may-be-the-biggest-roadblock-to-solving-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human-caused global warming</a> may be more deeply rooted in the political identities of certain groups.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This identity-based denial implies that for some, rejecting the reality of climate change is a core aspect of their political persona, making them less receptive to scientific evidence or researcher interventions.</p>



<p>Zimmermann explained further, saying, “Our data does reveal some indications of a variant of motivated reasoning, specifically that denying the existence of human-made global heating forms part of the political identity of certain groups of people.”</p>

<p>A new study is challenging the conventional approach to conservation that often leads to killing the non-native animals in a particular area in order to protect plant species. </p>



<p>This practice, which costs millions of dollars and results in the death of millions of healthy wild animals, is based on the assumption that introduced large herbivores, or megafauna, harm ecosystems by damaging sensitive plants, reducing native plant diversity, and supporting invasive plant species. </p>



<p>However, this new research from <a href="https://international.au.dk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aarhus University</a>, Denmark, and the <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oxford</a>, UK, suggests that the distinction between native and non-native large herbivores may not be as clear-cut as previously thought.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenging-practices-of-killing-non-native-animals">Challenging practices of killing non-native animals</h2>



<p>The researchers conducted a comprehensive analysis comparing the effects of native and introduced large mammal species on plant abundance and diversity across 221 studies worldwide. </p>



<p>Their findings revealed that both groups have similar impacts on native plant communities. </p>



<p>Dr. Jeppe Kristensen from the University of Oxford's Environmental Change Institute shared his thoughts. </p>



<p>"We do not find evidence to support the claim that native large herbivores have different impacts on ecosystems, specifically plant communities in this case, than their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/economic-time-bomb-costs-of-invasive-species-are-greatly-underestimated/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">non-native</a> counterparts," said Dr. Kristensen.</p>



<p>"Therefore, we should study the ecological roles these animals - native or not - play in ecosystems rather than judge them based on their belonging."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-trait-based-effects-on-ecosystems">Trait-based effects on ecosystems</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the study found that the ecological effects of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/free-ranging-cats-are-one-of-the-most-problematic-invasive-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">invasive animals</a> are more closely related to their traits than their nativeness. </p>



<p>For example, small-bodied selective feeders like deer tend to reduce plant diversity, whereas larger, non-selective feeders such as buffalo are more likely to enhance it. </p>



<p>This is attributed to the inability of large animals to selectively feed, which prevents the dominance of certain plant species and promotes biodiversity.</p>



<p>Moreover, the study notes the unique impact of individual animal body mass over the collective weight of animals in an area, underscoring the distinct roles large animals play in shaping ecosystems. </p>



<p>Dr Kristensen explained, "While one elephant can push over a mid-sized tree, 50 red deer cannot. You can’t total the body mass to understand the effect of animal presence on the landscape, you have to consider the effect of each <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-american-mink-has-spread-throughout-europe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animal species</a> present."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-paradox-of-culling-rethinking-conservation">Paradox of culling: Rethinking conservation</h2>



<p>This research also addresses the broader implications of eradicating non-native animals, many of which are endangered in their native habitats. </p>



<p>The paradox of spending millions to remove these animals from areas where they are considered invasive, while their populations decline elsewhere, raises questions about current conservation priorities. </p>



<p>Professor Jens-Christian Svenning from Aarhus University suggests, "This interpretation suggests that functional niches vacated by extinctions and extirpations in recent prehistory, often due to humans, are better refilled with animals with similar functional traits as the ones that were lost even if these new species are non-native or feral."</p>



<p>The study emphasizes the need to reassess how we perceive native and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unseen-crisis-37000-alien-species-have-been-introduced-by-human-activities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">non-native species</a> and their roles in ecosystems. </p>



<p>Rather than focusing solely on the concept of belonging, conservation strategies should prioritize re-establishing essential ecosystem functions, potentially through the adaptive introduction of non-native species. </p>



<p>Lead author Dr Erick Lundgren (Aarhus University) concluded, ‘"Our findings suggest it is time to start using the same standards to understand the effects of native and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-red-fire-ants-have-made-their-way-to-europe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">introduced organisms</a> alike and to consider seriously the implications of eradication and culling programs that are based on cultural notions of “belonging.” Instead, introduced animals should be studied in the same way as any native wildlife, through the lens of functional ecology."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-include-non-native-animals-instead-of-killing-them">Include non-native animals instead of killing them</h2>

<p>By demonstrating that the impact of large herbivores on plant diversity and abundance is more a matter of individual traits than origin, it challenges the costly and often counterproductive practice of killing non-native animal species solely based on their non-native status. </p>



<p>Instead, the findings advocate for an adaptive conservation approach that prioritizes ecological function and embraces the potential of non-native species to fill crucial roles left vacant by extinct species. </p>



<p>This paradigm shift could not only enhance biodiversity conservation efforts but also encourage a more nuanced and inclusive understanding of species' contributions to ecosystem health and resilience.</p>

<p>A team of researchers from the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Cambridge</a> has developed a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/squishy-robot-designed-for-space-now-assists-emergency-workers-on-earth/">robot</a> equipped with a sensor capable of reading braille at speeds nearly double that of the average human reader. </p>



<p>This innovative robot can interpret braille text at a remarkable 315 words per minute with close to 90% accuracy, showcasing a significant leap forward in the field of tactile sensing technology.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The research was not initially aimed at creating assistive technology for the visually impaired. Instead, its primary goal was to explore the possibilities of enhancing robotic sensitivity to mimic the touch of human fingertips.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This sensitivity is crucial for tasks that require a delicate touch, such as differentiating textures or applying the correct amount of force to grasp objects without causing damage.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-replicating-fingertip-sensitivity">Replicating fingertip sensitivity</h2>



<p>Human fingertips are extraordinarily sensitive, allowing us to perform complex tasks with ease, from picking up fragile items like eggs without breaking them to handling heavier objects such as bowling balls securely. Replicating this level of sensitivity in robots has been a challenging task, especially in a manner that is energy efficient.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, the research team, led by Professor Fumiya Iida of Cambridge’s Department of Engineering, is making strides in overcoming these challenges by developing robotic capabilities that mimic human skills.</p>



<p>“The softness of human fingertips is one of the reasons we’re able to grip things with the right amount of pressure,” said study first author Parth Potdar. “For robotics, softness is a useful characteristic, but you also need lots of sensor information, and it’s tricky to have both at once, especially when dealing with flexible or deformable surfaces.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-innovative-design">Innovative design</h2>



<p>The robot’s ability to read braille with such high efficiency is due in part to its innovative design, which incorporates a camera within its "fingertip" to read the text.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This design allows the robot to glide over braille lines smoothly, mimicking the more natural reading behavior of humans, unlike previous robotic readers that read braille one letter at a time in a more static and less efficient manner.</p>



<p>“There are existing robotic braille readers, but they only read one letter at a time, which is not how humans read,” explained study co-author David Hardman. “Existing robotic braille readers work in a static way: they touch one letter pattern, read it, pull up from the surface, move over, lower onto the next letter pattern, and so on. We want something that’s more realistic and far more efficient.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-machine-learning-algorithms-nbsp">Machine learning algorithms&nbsp;</h2>



<p>To tackle the challenges of motion blur and the need for precise image processing, the team employed machine learning algorithms. These algorithms were trained on a dataset of sharp braille images with artificially applied blur, enabling the robot to "deblur" images before attempting character recognition.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Once the algorithms were incorporated, the researchers tested their reader by sliding it quickly along rows of braille characters. The robotic braille reader could read at 315 words per minute at 87% accuracy, which is twice as fast and about as accurate as a human Braille reader.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surprising-accuracy-nbsp">Surprising accuracy&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“Considering that we used fake blur the train the algorithm, it was surprising how accurate it was at reading braille,” said Hardman. “We found a nice trade-off between speed and accuracy, which is also the case with human readers.”</p>

<p>The relentless march of climate change has left its mark on ecosystems worldwide, with coral reefs among the most affected, mainly by heat waves in the warming oceans.</p>



<p>These vibrant underwater ecosystems, vital for sustaining ocean <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-solutions-for-the-climate-and-biodiversity-crisis/">biodiversity</a>, are under siege from the escalating threat of marine heat waves. </p>



<p>Amid these dire circumstances, some good news has emerged in a study from the <a href="https://www.upenn.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Pennsylvania</a>. The research team spent nearly a decade investigating the resilience of coral species in Hawaii.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coral-reefs-and-climate-change">Coral reefs and climate change</h2>



<p>"Coral reefs are in jeopardy as climate change leads to increasingly frequent marine heat waves," wrote the researchers. </p>



<p>Some corals survive these extreme events, and this exposure may prime <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coral-growth-cannot-keep-pace-with-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">corals</a> to increase their heat tolerance.</p>



<p>Yet, as the time between heatwaves decreases, the accumulation of stress experienced may preclude opportunities for beneficial gains in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-are-some-corals-more-resilient-to-climate-change-than-others/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heat tolerance</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coral-adaptability-to-heat-waves">Coral adaptability to heat waves</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.bio.upenn.edu/people/katie-barott" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Professor Katie Barott</a> and her team focused their research on two coral species in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu - rice coral (<em>Montipora capitata</em>) and finger coral (<em>Porites compressa</em>). </p>



<p>The experts investigated the adaptability of these corals to the harsh challenges of marine heat waves. </p>



<p>The study reveals that some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deepest-known-coral-reef-bleaching-discovered-alarming-scientists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">corals</a> have the capability to withstand and recover from the stress of elevated ocean temperatures.</p>



<p>“We tracked more than 40 large coral colonies over 10 years and found that certain species have an improved ability to endure and recover from subsequent <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-corals-survive-warming-waters-by-remembering-heat-waves/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">marine heat waves</a> after surviving one such event,” Barott explained. </p>



<p>“It’s a bit like working out; the more often you exercise, the easier it is to go through the same exercise stress.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-resilience-and-vulnerability">Resilience and vulnerability</h2>



<p>The study's findings are a testament to both the resilience and vulnerability of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coral-reef-plastic-pollution-increases-with-depth-and-near-protected-areas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coral ecosystems</a>. </p>



<p>Through detailed observation of the corals' responses to significant marine heat waves in 2014, 2015, and 2019, the researchers identified individuals within each species that either resisted or succumbed to bleaching. </p>



<p>“One of our key discoveries is the role of “acclimatization,” says <a href="https://www.bio.upenn.edu/people/kristen-brown" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kristen Brown</a>, first author of the paper and a postdoctoral researcher in the Barott Lab. </p>



<p>“This refers to the ability of some corals to adjust to higher temperatures, thereby reducing their susceptibility to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/devastating-coral-bleaching-is-expected-around-the-world-within-the-next-year/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bleaching</a>, a phenomenon wherein corals expel the algae living in their tissues, causing them to turn white and increasing the risk of death.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-contrasting-recovery-patterns">Contrasting recovery patterns</h2>



<p>The researchers uncovered contrasting recovery patterns between the two coral species studied. </p>



<p><em>Montipora capitata</em> showed a propensity for bleaching and sustained mortality up to three years post-heatwave, indicating a struggle to acclimatize effectively. </p>



<p>By contrast, <em>Porites compressa</em> demonstrated remarkable resilience. Individual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coral-nurseries-need-protection-equal-to-that-of-established-coral-reefs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">corals</a> that were initially sensitive were found to survive subsequent heat waves without bleaching. </p>



<p>These corals also showed signs of recovery and acclimatization within a year.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-research-on-coral-and-heat-waves">Further research on coral and heat waves</h2>



<p>The researchers suggest that coral responses to climate change are diverse and influenced by a range of factors including species-specific characteristics and past exposure to environmental stressors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Going forward, the team plans to continue monitoring and exploring aspects like coral growth, calcification, and the impacts of recurring marine heat waves.</p>



<p>"Now, more than ever, seasonal and long-term studies are critically needed to identify corals that cannot just withstand and survive repeated heat stress events, but also rapidly recover ecosystem-defining traits (e.g., biomineralization) to continue providing the critical ecosystem services coastal communities directly rely on," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Urgent, collective global action to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions remains the only approach that may provide sufficient time for corals to acclimatize and adapt to rapid climate-induced temperature increases in order for coral reef ecosystems to persist in the Anthropocene.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2312104120" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</em></a><em>.</em></p>

<p>Brande's recent research has unveiled new atmospheric details of 15 Neptune-like exoplanets, offering insights into their composition and behavior.</p>



<p>Brandes explains the core of his research revolves around a technique known as transmission spectroscopy. This method involves observing the light from a star as it passes through the atmosphere of a planet in transit. </p>



<p>By analyzing the spectrum of light, researchers can detect the presence of various gases in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lifting-the-veil-on-alien-exoplanets-with-hazy-atmospheres/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planet's atmosphere</a>, unveiling the secrets it holds. </p>

<p>“With Hubble, the single gas we're most sensitive to is water vapor. If we observe water vapor in a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alien-weather-exoplanet-wasp-121-b-has-a-dynamic-atmosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planet's atmosphere</a>, that's a good indication that there are no clouds high enough to block its absorption," Brande said. </p>



<p>"Conversely, if water vapor is not observed and only a flat spectrum is seen, despite knowing that the planet should have an extended atmosphere, it suggests the likely presence of clouds or hazes at higher altitudes.”</p>



<p>This understanding is crucial for interpreting the data collected from space telescopes and offers a window into the atmospheric conditions of these distant worlds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-techniques-for-hunting-neptune-like-exoplanets">Techniques for hunting Neptune-like exoplanets</h2>



<p>This research was a collaborative effort involving experts from around the globe, including Laura Kreidberg's team at the <a href="https://www.mpg.de/institutes" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute</a> in Heidelberg, Germany, and Caroline Morley's group at the <a href="https://www.utexas.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Texas</a>, Austin. </p>



<p>Together, they adopted a novel approach to analyzing the atmospheres of small Neptune-like exoplanets, moving beyond the traditional method of fitting observational data to a single model spectrum.</p>



<p>Instead, Brande utilized a technique called "atmospheric retrieval," which involves simulating various atmospheric conditions -- ranging from water vapor levels to cloud locations -- and iterating through thousands of simulations to identify the most accurate representation of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-telescopes-can-directly-detect-signs-of-alien-life-in-exoplanet-atmospheres/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planet's atmosphere</a>. </p>



<p>"Our retrievals gave us a best-fit model spectrum for each planet," Brande states, enabling the team to assess the clarity of the planet's atmosphere. </p>



<p>This method not only provided a clearer understanding of the atmospheric composition but also allowed for a comparison with separate models by Caroline Morley, affirming the team's findings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-peeling-back-the-layers-of-exoplanetary-clouds">Peeling back the layers of exoplanetary clouds</h2>



<p>The analysis revealed that clouds, rather than hazes, were more consistent with the observed data, characterized by low sedimentation efficiencies that resulted in "fluffy" clouds. </p>



<p>These clouds, composed of particles like water droplets, remained suspended in the atmosphere, offering a glimpse into the dynamic processes governing these distant worlds.</p>



<p>The implications of Brande's research extend beyond academic curiosity, sparking "substantial interest" at a recent meeting of the <a href="https://aas.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Astronomical Society</a>. </p>



<p>Moreover, the team's work is part of a broader international observation program led by Crossfield, which recently announced the discovery of water vapor on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hubble-finds-a-water-rich-planet-with-a-steamy-atmosphere-named-gj-9827d/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GJ 9827d</a> -- a planet 97 light-years away in the constellation Pisces, with temperatures akin to those of Venus.</p>



<p>These findings, part of a concerted effort to detect water vapor on sub-Neptune-type planets, underscore the potential diversity of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-finds-17-exoplanets-that-have-oceans-and-possibly-alien-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water-rich planets</a> within the Milky Way. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>

<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
