<p>A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new and convincing evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.</p>



<p>The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that some unknown, nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.</p>



<p>“This finding by Perseverance is the closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars. The identification of a potential biosignature on the Red Planet is a groundbreaking discovery, and one that will advance our understanding of Mars,” said acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. </p>



<p>“NASA’s commitment to conducting Gold Standard Science will continue as we pursue our goal of putting American boots on Mars’ rocky soil.”</p>



<p>The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. </p>



<p>After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



<p>Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.</p>



<p>Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.</p>



<p>Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.</p>



<p>These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.</p>



<p>Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. </p>



<p>That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



<p>On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. </p>



<p>Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.</p>



<p>The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.</p>



<p>None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



<p>A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. </p>



<p>NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.</p>



<p>The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.</p>



<p>The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.</p>



<p>Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



<p>The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.</p>



<p>Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.</p>



<p>The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.</p>



<p>Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



<p>“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. </p>



<p>Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



<p>If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. </p>



<p>That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.</p>



<p>If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.</p>



<p>Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.</p>



<p>The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



<p>The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. </p>



<p>They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.</p>



<p>Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.</p>



<p>PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.</p>



<p>As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.</p>

<p>A new study from the <a href="https://www.reading.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Reading</a> has brought to light the alarming risks associated with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/good-news-ocean-oxygen-loss-may-ultimately-reverse/">ocean</a> heating, particularly highlighting the drastic changes observed in 2023. </p>



<p>The research warns of the consequences if the world enters a climate that is 3.0°C warmer than pre-industrial levels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extreme-ocean-temperatures">Extreme ocean temperatures</h2>



<p>The year 2023 witnessed record-high ocean temperatures that were unprecedented in the last four decades. The North Atlantic, in particular, experienced extreme warmth, measuring about 1.4°C above the average temperature between 1982 and 2011.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This surge in ocean temperatures is not an isolated phenomenon but a potential precursor to what could become the new norm under a global warming scenario of 3°C.&nbsp;</p>



<p>It's crucial to note that the current global temperature has already risen by approximately 1.2°C above pre-industrial levels. The researchers set out to explore the causes behind the record-breaking ocean temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-uncharted-territory-nbsp">Uncharted territory&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“The extraordinary heat in the North Atlantic and missing sea ice in the Southern Ocean in 2023 tell us the oceans are sounding an alarm," said Dr. Till Kuhlbrodt, who led the study.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"We urgently need to understand exactly why parts of the ocean are warming rapidly so we can prepare for more frequent weather disruption across the planet. How often we get hit by more of these extremes hangs on figuring out what's driving the Atlantic and Southern Oceans into uncharted territory.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-s-energy-imbalance-nbsp">Earth's energy imbalance&nbsp;</h2>



<p>A critical aspect of this research is the investigation into Earth's energy imbalance. Currently, the Earth is absorbing more solar energy than it releases back into space as heat, creating an imbalance of 1.9 watts per square meter.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Over a year, this excess energy is roughly 300 times greater than the global annual consumption of electric energy. This imbalance, primarily driven by heat-trapping gases from human activities, is a significant factor in the acceleration of ocean heating, with over 90% of the excess energy being absorbed by the oceans.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rapid-warming-of-the-atlantic">Rapid warming of the Atlantic</h2>



<p>Since 2016, the Atlantic Ocean has been warming at a rate faster than other ocean basins, particularly in the top 100 meters of the ocean. This trend is believed to be linked with record low levels of sea ice in the Southern Ocean. The year 2023 marked a historic low for Antarctic winter sea ice extent, the lowest since satellite monitoring began in the late 1970s.</p>



<p>The study emphasizes the need for a deeper understanding of how the rapid warming of the Atlantic is affecting sea ice cover and stresses the importance of attributing these oceanic and sea ice extremes accurately. Such understanding is crucial for refining climate models, which in turn will guide global mitigation policies and resilience measures.</p>



<p>Dr. Kuhlbrodt highlighted the urgency of gathering more data: “We need more data from the Atlantic to conclusively tie the warming and disappearing ice trends to a shift in the pattern of ocean currents, but the signals point to a hidden climate connections between the poles."</p>

Extreme ocean heating signals alarm for a 3°C warmer world

<p>Researchers at <a href="https://www.northwestern.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Northwestern University</a> have developed a potentially revolutionary approach to combating deadly and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. </p>



<p>By modifying the DNA of a bacteriophage, a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/which-animal-viruses-will-cause-future-pandemics/">virus</a> that infects bacteria, and introducing it into Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a notoriously antibiotic-resistant bacterium, the research team has been able to prompt the bacterium to self-destruct.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-alternative-nbsp">Breakthrough alternative&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study, published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1128/spectrum.02897-23" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Microbiology Spectrum</em></a>, demonstrates the potential of using modified phages as new therapeutics against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Erica Hartmann, the lead researcher and an associate professor at Northwestern’s McCormick School of Engineering, emphasized the importance of this development. </p>



<p>“Antimicrobial resistance is sometimes referred to as the ‘silent pandemic.’ The numbers of infections and deaths from infections are increasing worldwide. It’s a massive problem. Phage therapy has emerged as an untapped alternative to our reliance on using antimicrobials," she said.</p>



<p>Hartmann's work involved the use of electroporation, a method of introducing DNA into bacterial cells, which enabled the phage DNA to bypass the bacterium's defense mechanisms. The successful infiltration of the DNA into P. aeruginosa led to the creation of virions that cut through and killed the bacterial cell.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-nbsp">Broader implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The implications of this research are vast, especially considering the escalating global crisis of antibacterial resistance. Hartmann highlighted the potential of phage therapies, which can be highly specific in targeting bacterial infections without the broad disruption caused by antibiotics.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"What’s powerful about phage is it can be very specific in the way that antibiotics are not,” she said. “If you take an antibiotic for a sinus infection, for example, it disrupts your entire gastrointestinal tract. A phage therapy can be designed to affect only the infection.”</p>

<p>The quest for extraterrestrial life has taken an exciting turn, thanks to the anticipated arrival of the next generation of advanced telescopes. A new study explains how these telescopes could revolutionize our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lifting-the-veil-on-alien-exoplanets-with-hazy-atmospheres/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">search for life</a> in exoplanet atmospheres beyond Earth.</p>



<p>At the forefront of this exploration are astronomers from <a href="https://www.osu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Ohio State University</a>, who have delved into the capabilities of upcoming telescopes. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hunting-for-biosignatures-in-exoplanet-atmospheres">Hunting for biosignatures in exoplanet atmospheres</h2>



<p>Their focus? Examining the atmospheres of 10 rocky exoplanets, particularly for chemical traces such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, methane, and water. </p>

<p>The study's findings are particularly promising for two nearby exoplanets: <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/next-generation-telescopes-could-detect-signs-of-life-on-exoplanets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Proxima Centauri b</a> and <a href="https://exoplanets.nasa.gov/exoplanet-catalog/7641/gj-887-b/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GJ 887 b</a>. These telescopes are remarkably adept at detecting potential biosignatures. </p>



<p>Interestingly, Proxima Centauri b stands out as the only one where carbon dioxide could be detected if present.</p>



<p>This research suggests a tantalizing possibility: that these '<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/does-exoplanet-k2-18-have-the-right-conditions-to-support-alien-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Super Earths</a>' -- planets larger than Earth but smaller than Neptune -- might harbor conditions conducive to life. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-for-discovering-extraterrestrial-life">Potential for discovering extraterrestrial life</h2>



<p>Although no exoplanet atmosphere has yet been found that mirrors Earth's early life-supporting conditions, these planets are becoming prime candidates for future research missions.</p>



<p>The study, spearheaded by Huihao Zhang, a senior in astronomy at Ohio State, also explored the effectiveness of specialized instruments, including the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and other Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs). </p>



<p>These include the European <a href="https://elt.eso.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Extremely Large Telescope</a>, the <a href="https://www.tmt.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Thirty-Meter-Telescope</a>, and the <a href="https://giantmagellan.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Giant Magellan Telescope</a>. The aim was to understand their ability in directly imaging exoplanets.</p>



<p>“Not every planet is suitable for direct imaging, but that’s why simulations give us a rough idea of what the ELTs would have delivered and the promises they’re meant to hold when they are built," explained Zhang. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-technological-innovations-in-telescopic-imaging">Technological innovations in telescopic imaging</h2>



<p>Direct imaging of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alien-weather-exoplanet-wasp-121-b-has-a-dynamic-atmosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exoplanets</a> involves techniques like using a coronagraph or starshade to block the host star's light. </p>



<p>This allows for capturing a faint image of the orbiting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/six-planet-system-discovered-just-270-light-years-away-named-toi-1136/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exoplanet</a>. However, this method is challenging and time-consuming. The team's objective was to assess how well the ELTs could manage this task.</p>



<p>Their approach involved testing each telescope's instruments to differentiate universal background noise from the planetary noise targeted in the detection of biosignatures. </p>



<p>This is measured by the signal-to-noise ratio; the higher it is, the easier it is to detect and analyze a planet’s wavelength.</p>



<p>The results were insightful. The direct imaging mode of the European ELT's Mid-infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph excelled in detecting methane, carbon dioxide, and water on three planets (GJ 887 b, Proxima b, and Wolf 1061 c). </p>



<p>Its High Angular Resolution Monolithic Optical and Near-infrared Integral field spectrograph could detect the same gases, plus oxygen, albeit requiring significantly more exposure time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ground-vs-space-the-telescope-technology-showdown">Ground vs. space: The telescope technology showdown</h2>



<p>Zhang highlighted the comparison between these ground-based instruments and JWST's space-based capabilities, acknowledging the distinct advantages and challenges each type faces.</p>



<p>"It’s hard to say whether space telescopes are better than ground-based telescopes, as they operate in different environments and locations," he said. "Their observations are influenced differently."</p>



<p>The study revealed that for<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-have-identified-85-new-exoplanets-that-could-harbor-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> certain planets</a>, like GJ 887 b, ELTs are particularly well-suited due to high signal-to-noise ratios. However, for some transiting planets, like those in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jwst-provides-new-insights-into-a-distant-star-and-its-exoplanets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TRAPPIST-1</a> system, JWST's techniques are more effective than direct imaging from ELTs.</p>



<p><a href="https://astronomy.osu.edu/people/wang.12220" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ji Wang</a>, co-author of the study and an assistant professor in astronomy at Ohio State, emphasized the importance of simulation in preparing for these billion-dollar missions. </p>



<p>“The importance of simulation, especially for missions that cost billions of dollars, cannot be stressed enough,” said Wang. </p>



<p>“Not only do people have to build the hardware, they also try really hard to simulate the performance and be prepared to achieve those glorious results.”</p>

<p>“We want to see to what extent we can study our atmosphere to exquisite detail and how much information we can extract from it,” said Wang. “Because if we cannot answer habitability questions with Earth’s atmosphere, then there’s no way we can start to answer these questions around other planets.”</p>

<p>However, successful reforestation requires more than just planting trees; it demands ecological understanding, long-term planning, and follow-up. </p>



<p>Researchers at <a href="https://www.ucsc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Santa Cruz</a> are educating organizations and the public about best practices for effective reforestation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study">Focus of the study</h2>



<p>"As global tree-growing efforts have escalated in the past decade, copious failures and unintended consequences have prompted many reforestation best practices guidelines. The extent to which organizations have integrated these ecological and socioeconomic recommendations, however, remains uncertain," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"We reviewed websites of 99 intermediary organizations that promote and fund tree-growing projects to determine how well they report following best practices."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-need-for-improvement-and-accountability-nbsp">Need for improvement and accountability&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Study co-author Karen Holl is a restoration ecologist and professor of Environmental Studies at UC Santa Cruz.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"One of the common problems is that organizations will just say, ‘We're going to put this many trees in the ground,’ but the important question is, ‘What comes afterward?’ There are many documented failures from tree-planting campaigns, so we would hope to see organizations improving their practices and taking on more accountability, including through publicly reporting data," said Professor Holl.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-comprehensive-review">Comprehensive review</h2>



<p>UCSC postdoctoral researcher Spencer Schubert led a study analyzing web content from nearly 100 tree-planting organizations worldwide. The team rated each organization based on their public information's adherence to best practices.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We reviewed websites as well as annual reports and other linked documents to really get a broad view of the information that organizations reveal to the public,” Schubert explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-best-practices-guidelines-nbsp">Best practices guidelines&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study utilized 10 guidelines from Holl’s prior work, focusing on community engagement, addressing deforestation causes, avoiding harms, and long-term project management.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings showed improvements in recognizing community involvement, with 91% of organizations acknowledging its importance. However, detailed data and clarity about long-term project management are lacking.</p>



<p>"Overall, there are still many gaps in the details and data that we’re seeing," Schubert said, pointing to uncertainties in long-term benefits. The study urges organizations to move beyond generalities and specify implementation of best practices, including data collection and longer-term commitments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meaningful-reforestation-outcomes-nbsp">Meaningful reforestation outcomes&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“Things are moving in the right direction with some of these organizations," Holl added, while expressing her hope for continued focus on improving practices to achieve meaningful reforestation outcomes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This approach aims to maximize the positive impacts of tree-planting initiatives and prevent potential negative consequences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-higher-standards">Higher standards</h2>



<p>"We advocate the importance of addressing common pitfalls that have led to previous reforestation failures and the need to follow best practices guidelines to achieve desired goals, particularly as many inexperienced organizations continue to join the reforestation movement," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>"Holding the various actors in reforestation movements to a higher standard will require moving beyond narrow focus on tree planting statistics toward increasing collective consciousness among practitioners and funders about practices and standards that are most likely to lead to long-term success."</p>

<p>Music isn't just an auditory experience. It's also a physical one that transcends cultural boundaries, evoking similar feelings and physical sensations for people around the world.</p>



<p>This is the core finding of a groundbreaking study from Finland's <a href="https://turkupetcentre.fi/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Turku PET Centre</a>, exploring how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/music-bringing-people-together/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">music</a> emotionally and physically impacts listeners worldwide.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-the-musical-experience">Studying the musical experience</h2>



<p>The study, a collaborative effort between Turku PET Centre, <a href="https://www.aalto.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aalto University</a>, and the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (<a href="https://en.uestc.edu.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UESTC</a>), involved an extensive online survey with 1,500 participants from Western and Asian backgrounds. </p>



<p>Participants were asked to rate the emotions and bodily sensations they experienced while listening to a variety of Western and Asian songs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-emotional-and-physical-responses-to-music">Emotional and physical responses to music</h2>



<p>Academy Research Fellow Vesa Putkinen explains the study's fascinating findings. </p>



<p>"<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/emotions-inspired-by-music-shape-our-most-enduring-memories/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Music</a> that evoked different emotions, like happiness, sadness, or fear, caused distinct bodily sensations. For instance, people generally felt happy and danceable music in their arms and legs, whereas tender and sad music was more often felt in the chest area," says Putkinen. </p>



<p>This discovery highlights the deep-seated connection between our emotional responses to music and the <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/music_evokes-similar-bodily-sensations_emotions_Credit-Lauri-Nummenmaa_University-of-Turku_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">physical sensations we experience</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cross-cultural-similarities-in-music-experiences">Cross-cultural similarities in music experiences</h2>



<p>Another key finding of the study is the universality of these musical experiences. Despite cultural differences, Western and Asian listeners reported similar emotional and physical responses to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/music-listeners-brainwaves/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">music</a>. </p>



<p>This suggests that music-induced emotions might be rooted in inherited biological mechanisms rather than cultural learning.</p>



<p>Professor Lauri Nummenmaa elaborates on these universal patterns. </p>



<p>"Certain acoustic features of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/music-therapy-key-features-of-healing-music-identified/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">music</a>, like a clear beat or dissonance, were consistently associated with specific emotions across cultures," Nummenmaa explains.  </p>



<p>"For example, a clear beat often led to feelings of happiness and an urge to dance, while dissonance was linked to aggressiveness," she concluded.</p>



<p>These cross-cultural similarities indicate that our reactions to music are likely ingrained in our biology.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-music-s-role-in-human-evolution">Music's role in human evolution</h2>



<p>The study also delves into the role of music in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/babies-are-born-with-the-ability-to-recognize-the-beat-in-music/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human evolution</a>. Putkinen suggests that music may have evolved as a tool for social cohesion. </p>



<p>"Music's influence on the body is universal. Across cultures, people move to music, and synchronized postures, movements, and vocalizations signify affiliation," Putkinen notes. </p>



<p>"Music likely emerged during human evolution to enhance social interaction and community by synchronizing our bodies and emotions," he concludes.</p>

<p>Engaging with music and playing an instrument leads to better brain health in older age, according to a recent study from the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Exeter</a>. </p>



<p>The results indicate a clear correlation between music engagement and improved cognitive function in later life.</p>



<p>The research is part of the <a href="https://www.protectstudy.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PROTECT study</a>, an online platform open to people aged 40 and over. This platform provided data for more than 1,000 adults. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study">Focus of the study</h2>



<p>The researchers explored the impact of playing musical instruments or singing in a choir on brain health.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts reviewed participants’ musical experience and lifetime exposure to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/music-can-prevent-brain-aging-and-cognitive-decline/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">music</a>, as well as the results of cognitive testing, to determine whether music engagement helps to keep the brain sharp in later life.</p>



<p>The analysis revealed that playing a musical instrument, particularly the piano, correlates with enhanced memory and better executive function, which involves complex task-solving abilities.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The benefits are even more pronounced for those who continue their musical pursuits into later life. </p>



<p>Singing, though beneficial as well, seems to owe part of its positive impact to the social aspects of choir participation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cognitive-reserve-nbsp">Cognitive reserve&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“A number of studies have looked at the effect of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/emotions-inspired-by-music-shape-our-most-enduring-memories/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">music</a> on brain health. Our PROTECT study has given us a unique opportunity to explore the relationship between cognitive performance and music in a large cohort of older adults. Overall, we think that being musical could be a way of harnessing the brain’s agility and resilience, known as cognitive reserve," said Professor Anne Corbett.</p>



<p>“Although more research is needed to investigate this relationship, our findings indicate that promoting musical education would be a valuable part of public health initiatives to promote a protective lifestyle for brain health, as would encouraging older adults to return to music in later life."</p>



<p>"There is considerable evidence for the benefit of music group activities for individuals with dementia, and this approach could be extended as part of a healthy ageing package for older adults to enable them to proactively reduce their risk and to promote brain health.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-playing-an-instrument-as-a-lifelong-engagement">Playing an instrument as a lifelong engagement </h2>



<p>Stuart Douglas, a 78-year-old accordion enthusiast from Cornwall, exemplifies the study's findings on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/music-as-a-pain-reliever-the-power-of-your-playlist/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">music</a> engagement. </p>



<p>A lifelong accordion player, Douglas currently plays with the Cober Valley Accordion Band and the Cornish Division of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society. </p>



<p>“I learnt to play the accordion as a boy living in a mining village in Fife and carried on throughout my career in the police force and beyond. These days I still play regularly, and playing in the band also keeps my calendar full, as we often perform in public," said Douglas.</p>



<p>"We regularly play at memory cafes so have seen the effect that our music has on people with memory loss, and as older musicians ourselves we have no doubt that continuing with music into older age has played an important role in keeping our brains healthy.”</p>

<p>Scientists at the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge</a> have discovered a new aspect of how fasting mitigates inflammation, a harmful byproduct of the immune system that contributes to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/analyzing-the-blood-of-elite-cyclists-could-help-prevent-chronic-diseases/">chronic diseases</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study reveals that fasting elevates a specific chemical in the blood known as arachidonic acid, which plays a key role in inhibiting inflammation. This finding might also shed light on the efficacy of certain drugs, including aspirin.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-impact-of-diet-on-inflammation">The impact of diet on inflammation</h2>



<p>There is a well-established link between diet, particularly a high-calorie Western diet, and increased risks of diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. These conditions are often associated with chronic inflammation in the body.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Inflammation, while a natural response to injury or infection, can also be triggered by the inflammasome. This component within cells acts as an alarm system, initiating inflammation to protect the body against perceived damage. However, it can also unintentionally trigger inflammation, leading to the release of cell contents that further promote inflammatory responses.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-chronic-inflammation">Understanding chronic inflammation</h2>



<p>Professor Clare Bryant from the University of Cambridge's Department of Medicine emphasized the importance of understanding chronic inflammation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We’re very interested in trying to understand the causes of chronic inflammation in the context of many human diseases, and in particular the role of the inflammasome," said Professor Bryant.</p>



<p>“What's become apparent over recent years is that one inflammasome in particular – the NLRP3 inflammasome – is very important in a number of major diseases such as obesity and atherosclerosis, but also in diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, many of the diseases of older age people, particularly in the Western world.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arachidonic-acid">Arachidonic acid</h2>



<p>While fasting is known to reduce inflammation, the underlying reasons have been unclear. To investigate this, Professor Bryant's team collaborated with colleagues at the National Institute for Health to conduct a study involving 21 volunteers.</p>



<p>The participants consumed a 500kcal meal, fasted for 24 hours, and then ate another 500kcal meal. The researchers discovered that calorie restriction increased levels of arachidonic acid, a lipid known for its role in energy storage and intercellular communication. Intriguingly, once the participants resumed eating, arachidonic acid levels decreased.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-new-insights-nbsp">Critical new insights&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Upon examining the effects of arachidonic acid on immune cells in the lab, the team found that it reduces the activity of the NLRP3 inflammasome. This finding was unexpected since arachidonic acid was previously thought to exacerbate inflammation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This provides a potential explanation for how changing our diet - in particular by fasting - protects us from inflammation, especially the damaging form that underpins many diseases related to a Western high calorie diet," said Professor Bryant.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-research-is-needed-nbsp">Further research is needed&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“It’s too early to say whether fasting protects against diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease as the effects of arachidonic acid are only short-lived, but our work adds to a growing amount of scientific literature that points to the health benefits of calorie restriction."</p>



<p>"It suggests that regular fasting over a long period could help reduce the chronic inflammation we associate with these conditions. It's certainly an attractive idea," said Professor Bryant.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications-nbsp">Study implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study also suggests that a high-calorie diet might elevate the risk of diseases by increasing inflammasome activity.</p>



<p>"There could be a yin and yang effect going on here, whereby too much of the wrong thing is increasing your inflammasome activity and too little is decreasing it,” said Professor Bryant. “Arachidonic acid could be one way in which this is happening.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-anti-inflammatory-drugs">Anti-inflammatory drugs</h2>



<p>Furthermore, the findings might explain the unexpected mechanism of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin. Aspirin impedes the breakdown of arachidonic acid, potentially leading to decreased inflammasome activity and inflammation.</p>



<p>“It’s important to stress that aspirin should not be taken to reduce risk of long terms diseases without medical guidance as it can have side-effects such as stomach bleeds if taken over a long period," said Professor Bryant.</p>

<p>Plant biologists have discovered a unique survival strategy used by a tree fern species that is exclusive to Panama. The experts found that Cyathea rojasiana repurposes its own dead leaves, transforming them into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plant-leaves-send-signals-to-their-roots-on-dry-days-telling-them-to-keep-digging-deeper-for-water/">root structures</a> to nourish itself.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research, led by Professor James Dalling of the <a href="https://illinois.edu/">University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign</a>, redefines our understanding of plant adaptation and survival.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-zombie-leaves-nbsp">Zombie leaves&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The strategy involves the reanimation of dead leaf fronds of C. rojasiana. These "zombie leaves" play a critical role in the plant's survival.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Once the leaves die and fall to the ground, they undergo a transformation. They reverse the flow of water and nutrients, drawing nitrogen and other vital substances from the soil back into the mother plant.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unique-strategy-nbsp">Unique strategy&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Professor Dalling and his team stumbled upon this surprising discovery while studying a different plant in a Panamanian forest reserve.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers noticed something unusual about the fronds of the tree fern. Embedded firmly in the soil, these fronds had sprouted rootlets, forming a network that was actively extracting nutrients from the ground. Laboratory analyses confirmed this unique nutrient absorption method.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-repurposing-of-tissue-nbsp">Repurposing of tissue&nbsp;</h2>



<p>What makes the discovery even more extraordinary is the deceptive appearance of the reconfigured fronds. They retain the look of decayed plant matter, which likely contributed to this phenomenon going unnoticed by generations of plant biologists.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This repurposing of dead tissue to feed the original plant is a first-of-its-kind finding in the plant world.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-adapting-for-survival">Adapting for survival</h2>



<p>The evolutionary origins of this unique adaptation can be traced back to the Jurassic period, from which C. rojasiana descends. Professor Dalling suggests that the adaptation is likely a response to the nutrient-poor volcanic soils of Panama.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Panama is a land bridge between North and South America that coalesced 7 million years ago out of an archipelago of islands, and those islands are the result of volcanic activity in the past,” said Dalling.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“In one site we discovered, a layer of volcanic ash several meters deep looks like sand that you would dig up on a sandy beach. The plants that grow there are distinct from those that we find elsewhere in that forest reserve.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-searching-for-nutrients-nbsp">Searching for nutrients&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The patchiness of the vegetation means soil nutrients also are unevenly distributed. “And so the tree ferns seem to be putting out tentacles to sample the surrounding soils,” said Dalling.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“They’re able to sample a greater range of nutrient environments for the same amount of investment of rootlets than if they just sent out a single rooting structure all around the fern. I think it’s all about the economics of how they use resources in a patchy environment.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extraordinary-adaptations">Extraordinary adaptations</h2>



<p>The tree ferns also grow very slowly. “They’re probably putting on one or two leaves a year, and so they’re adding on the order of a few centimeters of height a year,” said Professor Dalling.</p>



<p>Each frond represents a significant investment for the plant, which it then repurposes after the leaf's death. The slow growth rate also means that the ferns remain relatively short, with a maximum height of about two meters.&nbsp;This height allows the dead fronds to droop to the ground, facilitating their transformation into rooting structures.</p>



<p>Professor Dalling, who also serves as a research associate at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama, highlights this discovery as "another example of the extraordinary diversity of plant adaptations that exist in resource-poor environments."&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a series of studies conducted by the <a href="https://umich.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Michigan</a>, researchers have uncovered a troubling trend: a significant number of people conceal their infectious illnesses to maintain their work, travel, and social engagements.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This comprehensive investigation explores the motivations, implications, and potential solutions to this public health concern. The research, led by doctoral candidate Wilson N. Merrell, involved a broad range of participants, including both healthy and sick adults.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shocking-extent-of-concealment-nbsp">Shocking extent of concealment&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Overall, a striking 75% of the 4,110 participants have either concealed an infectious illness in the past or admitted they would consider doing so in the future. Many participants reported boarding airplanes, going on dates, and engaging in other social interactions while hiding that they were sick.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Alarmingly, over 61% of healthcare workers participating in the study also reported hiding their infectious conditions. This finding is particularly concerning given the critical role of healthcare professionals in preventing the spread of illness.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deceptive-behavior-nbsp">Deceptive behavior&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Merrell said that the researchers found a difference between how people believe they would act when ill and how they actually behave.</p>



<p>“Healthy people forecasted that they would be unlikely to hide harmful illnesses - those that spread easily and have severe symptoms - but actively sick people reported high levels of concealment regardless of how harmful their illness was to others,” said Merrell.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shocking-results">Shocking results</h2>



<p>The first study involved 399 university healthcare employees and 505 students. This study started in March 2020, coinciding with the onset of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/people-who-dont-get-sick-from-covid-19-may-have-a-genetic-mutation/">COVID-19</a> pandemic.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The participants detailed their symptomatic days and their frequency of symptom concealment. The individuals then rated how often they actively covered up symptoms from others, came to campus or work without telling others they were feeling ill, or falsified mandatory symptom screeners that the university had required for anyone using campus facilities.</p>



<p>More than 70% of the participants reported covering up their symptoms. Many said they hid their illness because it would conflict with social plans, while a few people said they felt pressure due to institutional policies, such as a lack of paid time off. Only five participants admitted to hiding a COVID-19 infection.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-low-symptom-severity-nbsp">Low symptom severity&nbsp;</h2>



<p>For the second study, 946 online participants were randomly assigned to one of nine conditions in which they imagined being either moderately or severely sick while in a social situation. In each condition, the risk of spreading the illness was designated as low, medium, or high.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study revealed that the participants were much more likely to conceal their illness when symptom severity was low and they were less likely to be contagious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sick-people-may-be-more-insensitive-nbsp">Sick people may be more insensitive&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In a third study, 900 people - including some who were actively sick - were asked to rate the likelihood of covering up an illness in a hypothetical meeting with another person.</p>



<p>The results showed that individuals who were actually sick were more likely to conceal their illness, regardless of its transmissibility.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This suggests that sick people and healthy people evaluate the consequences of concealment in different ways, with sick people being relatively insensitive to how spreadable and severe their illness may be for others.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-implications-nbsp">Public health implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Merrell added that the COVID-19 crisis may have shaped the way the participants thought about concealing an illness. He said that future research could explore how ecological factors and medical advances such as vaccines influence people’s disease-related behavior.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research team plans to expand this research to other countries to uncover potential cultural differences in concealment behaviors. Merrell noted that the findings carry significant public health implications, illuminating the motivations and tradeoffs we make in social interactions when we’re sick.</p>



<p>“After all, people tend to react negatively to, find less attractive, and steer clear of people who are sick with infectious illness,” said Merrell. “It therefore makes sense that we may take steps to cover up our sickness in social situations. This suggests that solutions to the problem of disease concealment may need to rely on more than just individual good will.”</p>

<p>The universe is a tapestry of wonders, and the spiral galaxies, with their arms teeming with stars, are among its most enchanting mysteries. </p>



<p>At the heart of these cosmic swirls lie ancient star clusters and, occasionally, the enigmatic supermassive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/18-black-holes-captured-devouring-nearby-stars-in-dramatic-tidal-disruption-events/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black holes</a>. </p>



<p>It is here that NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (<a href="https://webbtelescope.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JWST</a>) excels, capturing breathtaking scenes of nearby galaxies in a blend of near- and mid-infrared light. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-phangs-program-a-cosmic-endeavor">The PHANGS program: A cosmic endeavor</h2>



<p>These images are part of the ambitious and long-term project known as the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS (<a href="https://phangs.stsci.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PHANGS</a>). </p>



<p>This program is a global effort, backed by over 150 astronomers. Prior to the JWST, the PHANGS project had already amassed a wealth of data from other telescopes, covering ultraviolet, visible, and radio light. </p>



<p>The addition of JWST's near- and mid-<a href="https://webbtelescope.org/webb-science/the-observatory/infrared-astronomy" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">infrared data</a> brings new dimensions to our understanding of galaxies.</p>



<p>“Webb’s new images are extraordinary,” said Janice Lee, a project scientist for strategic initiatives at the <a href="https://www.stsci.edu/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Space Telescope Science Institute</a> in Baltimore. </p>



<p>“They’re mind-blowing even for researchers who have studied these same galaxies for decades. Bubbles and filaments are resolved down to the smallest scales ever observed, and tell a story about the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/starburst-spikes-seen-exploding-from-nebula-n79-are-1630-light-years-long/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">star formation</a> cycle,” Lee added.</p>



<p>Thomas Williams, a researcher from the <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oxford</a>, shared the team's excitement, "I feel like our team lives in a constant state of being overwhelmed -- in a positive way -- by the amount of detail in these images."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stars-and-dust-of-creation-in-spiral-galaxies">Stars and dust of creation in spiral galaxies</h2>



<p>JWST's Near-Infrared Camera (<a href="https://webbtelescope.org/contents/media/images/01FA0SZSEW1TZ51BHG0EGW2EZP" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NIRCam</a>) has captured images of millions of stars, shimmering in hues of blue, scattered across the galaxies or clustered in groups. </p>



<p>Meanwhile, the Mid-Infrared Instrument (<a href="https://webbtelescope.org/contents/media/images/01FA0SZA5HPXKRKH8Y6PKB10V1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MIRI</a>) has shed light on glowing dust and nascent stars, still shrouded in the gas and dust that fuel their formation. </p>



<p>"These are where we can find the newest, most massive stars in the galaxies," noted Erik Rosolowsky from the <a href="https://www.ualberta.ca/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Alberta</a>.</p>



<p>Astonishingly, JWST's images have also revealed large, spherical shells in the gas and dust of these galaxies. </p>



<p>Adam Leroy from <a href="https://www.osu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ohio State University</a> explains, "These holes may have been created by one or more stars that exploded, carving out giant holes in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/recent-gamma-ray-burst-was-70-times-brighter-than-any-cosmic-explosion/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">interstellar material</a>."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deciphering-the-patterns-of-star-formation">Deciphering the patterns of star formation</h2>



<p>By tracing the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stars-at-the-edge-of-our-milky-way-galaxy-travel-more-slowly/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">spiral arms</a>, astronomers have discovered extended regions of gas, glowing in red and orange. </p>



<p>These patterns, as Rosolowsky elaborates, are like cosmic waves, offering clues about how galaxies distribute gas and dust, vital for understanding the processes of star formation.</p>



<p>“These structures tend to follow the same pattern in certain parts of the galaxies,” Rosolowsky added. “We think of these like waves, and their spacing tells us a lot about how a galaxy distributes its gas and dust.”</p>



<p>It appears galaxies grow from the inside out. <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/spiral-galaxies_19-composite_Webb_NASA_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Star formation begins at the core</a> and spirals outward. </p>



<p>Stars farther from the core tend to be younger, while those near the core are older, illuminated in a blue glow. </p>



<p>“That’s a clear sign that there may be an active supermassive black hole,” said Eva Schinnerer, a staff scientist at the <a href="https://www.mpia.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute for Astronomy</a> in Heidelberg, Germany. </p>



<p>“Or, the star clusters toward the center are so bright that they have saturated that area of the image.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unlocking-the-secrets-of-spiral-galaxies">Unlocking the secrets of spiral galaxies</h2>



<p>The PHANGS team, alongside releasing these images, has also unveiled the largest catalog of approximately 100,000 star clusters. </p>



<p>This opens up new research avenues, allowing scientists to more accurately study star life cycles. </p>



<p>“The amount of analysis that can be done with these images is vastly larger than anything our team could possibly handle,” Rosolowsky emphasized. </p>



<p>“We’re excited to support the community so all researchers can contribute.”</p>

<p>The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. <p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
