<p>A study from <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King’s College London</a> and the <a href="https://www.crick.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Francis Crick Institute</a> reveals that epithelial cells use electricity to spot weak neighbors and remove them. This breakthrough offers fresh insight into how diseases like cancer and stroke arise when energy balance within cells is disturbed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-renew-constantly">Cells renew constantly</h2>



<p>Epithelial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hemifusome-newly-discovered-organelle-inside-human-cells-with-immense-potential/">cells</a> form the barrier that lines organs, renewing rapidly to stay protective. Their balance depends on extrusion, the process of ejecting damaged or excess cells. This keeps tissues tightly packed and efficient. </p>



<p>If extrusion falters, cell numbers become chaotic, creating openings for disease. Without this constant regulation, unhealthy cells may linger, disrupt organ integrity, and interfere with critical signaling pathways. </p>



<p>Over time, these disturbances can weaken the protective barrier, encourage unchecked growth, and increase vulnerability to conditions such as cancer, chronic inflammation, or infections that compromise overall tissue health and resilience.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-electricity-targets-weak-cells">Electricity targets weak cells</h2>



<p>Earlier work showed that overcrowding forces some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-the-first-cells-life-form-on-earth-scientists-think-they-finally-figured-it-out/">cells</a> to be squeezed out mechanically. The latest discovery goes further. It shows that extrusion is not random but targets energy-poor cells. Crowding pushes sodium into cells through specialized ion channels, altering their electrical signals. </p>



<p>Healthy cells restore balance, but weak ones cannot, triggering shrinkage and eventual extrusion. This reveals a precise surveillance system where tissues actively monitor cellular energy, ensuring only the strongest cells remain. </p>



<p>Such control preserves organ stability, while defects in this mechanism may promote disease progression and unchecked cellular growth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-sense-crowding-with-electricity">Cells sense crowding with electricity</h2>



<p>The researchers noticed a striking prelude to extrusion: cells briefly shrank before being expelled. This stage, termed homeostatic early shrinkage, reflects water leaving the cell. </p>



<p>Roughly 70 percent of extruding cells undergo this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cells-vomit-waste-to-speed-up-healing-in-our-body/">shrinkage</a>. It is not caused by contractile forces but by ion channels regulating water movement. Key players include the potassium channels Kv1.1 and Kv1.2, and the chloride channel SWELL1.</p>



<p>The study revealed that an epithelial sodium channel, ENaC, senses crowding. It acts as a tension detector, letting sodium rush in when cells press against one another.</p>



<p>If a cell has enough ATP, it pumps sodium back out and stabilizes. If not, depolarization occurs, potassium and chloride exit, water follows, and the cell shrinks, crossing the threshold that triggers extrusion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-low-energy-as-a-trigger">Low energy as a trigger</h2>



<p>Time-lapse experiments revealed that cells destined for extrusion show falling ATP levels before they depolarize and shrink. When ATP levels were artificially lowered, extrusion increased. </p>



<p>This shows energy deficiency directly selects <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-space-changes-our-cells-insights-from-the-iss/">cells</a> for removal. In essence, epithelial tissue runs a built-in fitness test: cells unable to maintain their electrical balance are expelled.</p>



<p>"We see this sodium channel acting as a sensor, exposing cells with the least amount of energy and targeting those cells for death," noted study lead author Dr. Saranne Mitchell. </p>



<p>"This mechanism gives epithelia a constant surveillance system to rapidly detect weak cells and remove them. It's like an electrical quality-control check, keeping tissues robust and functional."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-diseases">Implications for diseases</h2>



<p>The study highlights how epithelial tissues are not passive layers but dynamic communities constantly testing their members. By identifying weaker cells early, they can preserve strength and protect organ function.</p>



<p>"By revealing that cells with low energy are targeted for extrusion, our work also adds a new layer into how metabolism can impact many diseases," said Professor Jody Rosenblatt.</p>



<p>"This new insight could suggest how overconsumption, through eating more and consuming more calories, might override this 'low energy trigger' for extrusion and prevent the elimination of defective cells, allowing them to accumulate into cancers." </p>



<p>"It might also reveal how energy deprivation following a stroke, caused by impacted blood supply, could lead to excess extrusion and organ damage."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-use-electricity-effectively">Cells use electricity effectively</h2>



<p>This model highlights energy sufficiency as a deciding factor in cell survival. Much like how mitochondria regulate apoptosis, epithelial extrusion uses energy balance as a checkpoint. </p>



<p>The findings also connect to conditions like cystic fibrosis and cancer, where ion channel malfunctions are common. By linking ion flow, energy, and crowding, this study reframes how tissues maintain integrity.</p>



<p>The discovery paints epithelia as more than static barriers. They are dynamic, electrically sensitive tissues constantly probing their members for weakness. </p>



<p>Cells that cannot meet the energy demands are removed for the greater good of the tissue. Even the faintest electrical flicker within these cellular communities can tip the balance between health and disease.</p>

<p>The research team, led by <a href="https://durham-repository.worktribe.com/person/661336/graham-purvis" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Graham Purvis</a>, now a Postdoctoral Research Associate at <a href="https://www.durham.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Durham University</a>, explored the transition from inorganic materials to living systems. </p>

<p>By simulating conditions akin to mild hydrothermal vents, they mixed hydrogen, bicarbonate, and iron-rich magnetite. </p>

<p>This understanding is vital to piecing together the complex puzzle of life's beginnings on our planet.</p>



<p>Fatty acids, long <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/building-blocks-of-life-found-in-asteroids-were-formed-in-cold-regions-of-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">organic molecules</a> with both water-attracting and repelling regions, are known to naturally form cell-like compartments in water. </p>



<p>These molecules are believed to have been integral to the formation of the first cell membranes. </p>



<p>However, the source of these fatty acids during the early stages of life has remained a subject of debate. One hypothesis posits their origin in hydrothermal vents, where hot, hydrogen-rich fluids and CO2-rich seawater interacted.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-molecules-and-ancient-hot-springs">Organic molecules and ancient hot springs</h2>



<p>In their laboratory, the research group replicated key aspects of the chemical environment of early Earth's oceans. </p>



<p>They discovered that mixing hot hydrogen-rich fluids with carbon dioxide-rich water in the presence of early Earth's iron-based minerals led to the formation of molecules needed for the earliest cell membranes.</p>



<p>Dr. Purvis elaborated on the significance of their findings, emphasizing the importance of cellular compartments in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-much-life-has-inhabited-earth-since-the-very-first-cell-scientists-found-out/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">life's inception</a>. </p>



<p>“Central to life's inception are cellular compartments, crucial for isolating internal chemistry from the external environment," Dr. Purvis explained.</p>



<p>These compartments, crucial for separating internal chemistry from the external environment, likely played a pivotal role in fostering life-sustaining reactions and energy production. </p>



<p>He suggested that the interaction of hydrogen-rich fluids from alkaline hydrothermal vents with bicarbonate-rich waters on iron-based minerals could have led to the formation of early cell membranes, potentially serving as the cradle of life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-extraterrestrial-life">Implications for extraterrestrial life</h2>



<p>Adding to the discussion, Principal Investigator <a href="https://www.ncl.ac.uk/nes/people/profile/jontelling.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Jon Telling</a>, Reader in Biogeochemistry at the School of Natural Environmental Sciences, highlighted the research's implications for understanding life's origins. </p>



<p>“We think that this research may provide the first step in how life originated on our planet. Research in our laboratory now continues on determining the second key step; how these organic molecules which are initially ‘stuck’ to the mineral surfaces can lift off to form spherical membrane-bounded cell-like compartments; the first potential ‘<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-clues-life-began-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">protocells</a>’ that went on to form the first cellular life," Dr. Telling elucidated.</p>



<p>The team is now focusing on how these organic molecules, initially adhering to mineral surfaces, might have formed spherical membrane-bounded cell-like compartments, potentially the first 'protocells.'</p>



<p>Moreover, the research opens intriguing possibilities beyond our planet. The team speculates that similar membrane-creating reactions could be occurring under the icy surfaces of moons in our solar system, hinting at alternative <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/building-blocks-of-life-found-in-asteroids-were-formed-in-cold-regions-of-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">origins of life</a> in these distant realms.</p>



<p>In summary, this research sheds light on the genesis of life on Earth while also expanding our understanding of where and how life could potentially arise elsewhere in the cosmos.</p>

<p>A new study by Brazilian researchers has revealed startling details about the Atlantic Rainforest biome. The experts found that 82 percent of the rainforest's endemic trees, totaling over 2,000 distinct species, face varying degrees of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/one-quarter-of-earths-species-may-be-extinct-by-2010/">extinction</a> risk.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unprecedented-assessment-nbsp">Unprecedented assessment&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The scope of the research is unprecedented. The team assessed all 4,950 tree species within the Atlantic Rainforest using the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The study revealed that 65 percent of the total species are vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered.</p>



<p>“The number (82% of endemic species threatened) came as a shock. We took forest availability into account for each species, whether or not it was healthy forest, for example. Not all species are able to survive in degraded fragments, so the actual situation may be even more alarming,” said study co-author Professor Renato Lima from the <a href="https://www5.usp.br/english/institutional/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of São Paulo</a> Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-innovative-approach-nbsp">Innovative approach&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The research team conducted an automated conservation assessment of the tree species, incorporating over 800,000 herbarium records and 1.3 million tree counts from forest inventories.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts also analyzed data on the species' life histories, commercial uses, and habitat loss over time. The forest inventory data came from TreeCo, a repository managed by Lima.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-insights">Critical insights</h2>



<p>A key finding of the study was that less than 30 percent of the endemic species have experienced a population decline in the last three generations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This threshold is critical as species with a 30 to 50 percent decline are classified as vulnerable by the IUCN, the lowest level of threat. A decline above 50 percent places species in the endangered or critically endangered categories.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-threatened-species-nbsp">Threatened species&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Among the threatened species, 75 percent were categorized as endangered. Notably, the brazilwood (Paubrasilia echinata) is now considered critically endangered after an estimated 84 percent reduction in its population size over recent generations. </p>



<p>Other familiar species like the Paraná pine (Araucaria angustifolia), Jussara palm (Euterpe edulis), and Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) have lost over half of their populations, earning them the endangered status.</p>



<p>The study also highlights the plight of species unique to the Atlantic Rainforest, such as Brazilian sassafras (Ocotea odorifera) and Brazilian walnut (Ocotea porosa), which have experienced population declines between 53 and 89 percent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-assessments-nbsp">Future assessments&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The IUCN's categorization system, which includes criteria A (population decline), B (geographic range), C (small and declining population), and D (very small population), was fully utilized in this study.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research demonstrated that incorporating more of these criteria results in a higher number of species identified as threatened. When fewer criteria were used, as was common in previous studies, the number of threatened species was six times less.</p>



<p>The study’s methodology is set to drastically improve future assessments, with plans already underway to apply it to approximately 12,000 plant species endemic to Brazil. This research will be conducted by the National Center for Conservation of Flora at the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications-nbsp">Study implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In a simulation based on data for other tropical forests, the researchers found that 30 to 35 percent of the planet’s tree species may be threatened by deforestation alone.</p>



<p>“Information of this kind is critically important to the formulation of public policies for conservation and reforestation," said Professor Lima. "The most degraded areas and threatened species can be prioritized without overlooking areas where there are forests that may not be viable in the long run if nothing is done now."</p>



<p>On a positive note, the study led to the rediscovery of five species previously thought to be extinct in the wild. However, the team also concluded that 13 species endemic to the Atlantic Rainforest may already be extinct.</p>

<p>The advent of AI machine learning in the realm of pharmaceutical drug synthesis marks a major shift in drug discovery and development. </p>



<p>A team of researchers at the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Cambridge</a>, in collaboration with <a href="https://www.pfizer.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pfizer</a>, have developed a transformative approach to drug research that merges automated experiments with artificial intelligence (AI). </p>



<p>This method could significantly expedite the creation of new <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/illegal-drugs-can-now-be-detected-in-the-air/">drugs</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-is-changing-the-game-for-drug-companies">AI is changing the game for drug companies</h2>



<p>Historically, the process of predicting chemical reactions has been largely based on trial-and-error, leading to frequent failures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Traditional techniques involve simulating electrons and atoms in simplified models, which are not only computationally demanding but also prone to inaccuracies. </p>



<p>The Cambridge team, inspired by genomics, has taken an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-have-identified-anti-aging-drugs-using-ai-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI data-driven</a> route to drug synthesis and understanding chemical reactivity. Their new approach, which they have named the chemical "reactome," is a game-changer.</p>



<p>“The reactome could change the way we think about organic chemistry,” said study lead author Dr. Emma King-Smith from Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“A deeper understanding of the chemistry could enable us to make pharmaceuticals and so many other useful products much faster. But more fundamentally, the understanding we hope to generate will be beneficial to anyone who works with molecules.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chemical-reactome">Chemical reactome</h2>



<p>The chemical reactome identifies correlations between reactants, reagents, and the reaction's performance from a dataset of over 39,000 pharmaceutically relevant reactions. </p>



<p>It also highlights gaps in existing data. The method leverages high-throughput automated experiments to generate this data.</p>



<p>“High throughput chemistry has been a game-changer, but we believed there was a way to uncover a deeper understanding of chemical reactions than what can be observed from the initial results of a high throughput experiment,” explained Dr. King-Smith.</p>



<p>“Our approach uncovers the hidden relationships between reaction components and outcomes,” said Dr Alpha Lee, who led the research. </p>



<p>“The dataset we trained the model on is massive – it will help bring the process of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/machine-learning-reveals-how-to-prevent-covid-19-from-ever-returning/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chemical discovery</a> from trial-and-error to the age of big data.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-efficient-drug-design-using-ai">Efficient drug design using AI</h2>



<p>A related study, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, showcases the team's development of an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/artificial-intelligence-proves-very-useful-to-doctors-when-diagnosing-patients/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI machine learning</a> approach for precise molecular transformations in drug synthesis. This method enables chemists to make specific changes to the core of a molecule. </p>



<p>The technique is comparable to a last-minute design tweak, without starting from scratch. Such flexibility is crucial for efficient drug design, particularly for late-stage functionalization reactions, which are often unpredictable and challenging to control.</p>



<p>“Late-stage functionalization can yield unpredictable results and current methods of modeling, including our own expert intuition, isn't perfect. A more predictive model would give us the opportunity for better screening," said Dr. King-Smith.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-can-predict-human-life-events-including-death/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI machine learning</a> model, pre-trained on extensive spectroscopic data, is capable of predicting reaction sites and how these vary under different conditions. </p>



<p>This approach overcomes the issue of scarce data in late-stage functionalization, enabling accurate prediction of reactivity sites on diverse drug-like molecules.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-predicting-intricate-transformations-nbsp">Predicting intricate transformations&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“We pretrained the model on a large body of spectroscopic data – effectively teaching the model general chemistry – before fine-tuning it to predict these intricate transformations,” said Dr. King-Smith.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team experimentally validated the model on a diverse set of drug-like molecules and was able to accurately predict the sites of reactivity under different conditions.</p>



<p>“The application of machine learning to chemistry is often throttled by the problem that the amount of data is small compared to the vastness of chemical space,” said Dr. Lee. </p>



<p>“Our approach – designing models that learn from large datasets that are similar but not the same as the problem we are trying to solve – resolve this fundamental low-data challenge and could unlock advances beyond late stage functionalization.”  </p>

<p>In the realm of airplanes and aerodynamics, the quantum realm offers a more precise and efficient way to solve complex problems, especially those related to fluid dynamics. </p>



<p>The team at <a href="https://en.sjtu.edu.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Shanghai Jiao Tong University</a> has pioneered the use of a quantum support vector machine, a tool far superior to its classical counterpart.</p>



<p>In their research, the use of this quantum method resulted in a significant increase in predictive accuracy. The classification accuracy for detecting flow separation on airfoils jumped from 81.8% to 90.9%. </p>



<p>Similarly, the accuracy in determining the angle of attack -- a critical parameter in aircraft performance -- saw an improvement from 67.0% to 79.0%.</p>

<p>The research, involving 21 table salt brands, revealed that each contained microplastics, including fragments, fibers, films, and pellets. These molecules are associated with serious health risks, including cancer, heart disease, dementia, and fertility issues.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-salt-contamination">Salt contamination</h2>



<p>The study, published in the <a href="https://doi.org/10.22034/gjesm.2024.01.14" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Global Journal of Environmental Science and Management</em></a>, points out that the contamination of salt can occur during the extraction of seawater and manufacturing processes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research is particularly relevant for the United States, Singapore, and the Czech Republic, as Indonesia exports most of its sea salt to these countries.</p>

<p>The researchers identified four types of microplastics by shape, size, and color. They found that fragments were the most common type of microplastic, followed by fibers, films, and pellets. Black was the predominant color among the particles.</p>



<p>Additionally, the team identified four types of polymers present in the microplastics: polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polyester. PE is commonly used in synthetic resins, PP in robust, heat-resistant plastics, PET in clothing fibers and containers for liquids and foods, and polyester in man-made fiber materials.</p>

<p>Notably, the study chose not to disclose the names of the salt brands tested to maintain privacy. This research is part of a growing body of evidence highlighting the widespread presence of microplastics in everyday products.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A similar study conducted by the <a href="https://www.ua.es/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Alicante</a> in 2017 found up to 280 molecules per kilogram of salt from Spain, another significant exporter of salt to the US.</p>

A recent study from <a href="https://www.sandia.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sandia National Laboratories</a> has shed new light on this rapidly evolving crisis. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-intriguing-phenomenon-nbsp">Intriguing phenomenon&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The research was focused on the significant reduction in sunlight reflectivity, or albedo, in the Arctic. The results offer a deeper understanding of the factors that are accelerating Arctic warming, which is occurring at a rate four times faster than the global average.</p>

<p>First, the reduction in sea ice leads to more open, dark ocean surfaces that absorb more sunlight, thereby increasing temperatures. Second, there is the altered reflectivity of the remaining sea ice, which is affected by factors like meltwater ponding.</p>



<p>Amy Kaczmarowski, an engineer at Sandia, conducted an analysis of the data spanning from 2014 to 2019.</p>



<p>“There have been numerous local measurements and theoretical discussions regarding the effects of water puddling on ice albedo," said Kaczmarowski.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-new-insights-nbsp">Critical new insights&nbsp;</h2>



<p>"This study represents one of the first comprehensive examinations of year-to-year effects in the Arctic region. Sandia’s data analysis revealed a 20% to 35% decrease in total reflectivity over the Arctic summer."</p>



<p>"According to microwave sea-ice extent measurements collected during the same period, one-third of this loss of reflectivity is attributed to fully melted ice.”</p>



<p>The other two-thirds of the loss in reflectivity is likely caused by the weathering of the remaining sea ice. according to the study. “The key discovery here is just how much the weathered ice is reducing reflectivity,” said Kaczmarowski.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ongoing-research">Ongoing research</h2>



<p>Senior scientist Phil Dreike collaborated with the U.S. Space Force to obtain permission for Sandia to analyze previously unpublished data from the radiometers on GPS satellites.</p>



<p>“New observational climate datasets are unique," said Roesler. "To qualify as a climate dataset, observations must span a multitude of years. Small-scale science projects are typically not that long in duration, making this dataset particularly valuable."</p>



<p>Kaczmarowski emphasized the ongoing nature of this research and the team's commitment to collaborating with other climate scientists. “We will continue to use this data to investigate various regions of the Earth for climate applications."</p>

<p>A team of researchers led by <a href="https://www.curtin.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Curtin University</a> has achieved a significant milestone in understanding the evolution of life on Earth. For the first time, the team has precisely dated some of the world's oldest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/juvenile-t-rex-fossils-belong-a-distinct-tyrannosaur-species/">fossils</a> of complex multicellular life.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study sheds light on a crucial point in Earth's history when diverse life forms emerged in the oceans after four billion years of hosting only single-celled microbes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-ediacaran-period">The Ediacaran period</h2>



<p>"The Ediacaran period represents a pivotal time in the evolution of life as it contains the earliest unequivocal fossil evidence for large-scale multicellular organisms, including the first animals," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"The Ediacaran biota demonstrates examples of heterotrophy, locomotion, sexual reproduction and organization into complex ecosystems."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dating-the-fossils-nbsp">Dating the fossils&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Study lead author Anthony Clarke, a PhD student in the Timescales of Mineral Systems Group at Curtin, explained the innovative method used to determine the age of the ancient fossils. By utilizing volcanic ash layers as chronological markers within the geological sequence, the team was able to date the fossils with remarkable precision.</p>



<p>“Located in the Coed Cochion Quarry in Wales, which contains the richest occurrence of shallow marine life in Britain, we used outfall from an ancient volcano that blanketed the animals as a time marker to accurately date the fossils to 565 million years, accurate down to 0.1 percent,” said Clarke.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-living-community-nbsp">Ancient living community&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“With similar Ediacaran fossils found at sites around the world including in Australia, dating the fossils identifies them as being part of an ancient living community that developed as Earth thawed out from a global ice age."</p>



<p>“These creatures would in some ways resemble modern day marine species such as jellyfish, yet in other ways be bizarre and unfamiliar. Some appear fern-like, others like cabbages, whereas others resembled sea pens.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-geological-period-nbsp">New geological period&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Study co-author Professor Chris Kirkland said the fossils are named after the Ediacara Hills in South Australia’s Flinders Ranges, where they were first discovered, leading to the first new geological period established in over a century.</p>



<p>“These Welsh fossils appear directly comparable to the famous fossils of Ediacara in South Australia,” said Professor Kirkland. “The fossils, including creatures like the disc-shaped Aspidella terranovica, showcase some of the earliest evidence of large-scale multicellular organisms, marking a transformative moment in Earth’s biological history."</p>



<p>“Ediacaran fossils record the response of life to the thaw out from a global glaciation, which shows the deep connection between geological processes and biology."</p>



<p>“Our study underscores the importance of understanding these ancient ecosystems in order to unravel the mysteries of Earth’s past and shape our comprehension of life’s evolution.”</p>

<p>In a remarkable discovery, researchers have unearthed a 3D fragment of fossilized skin that is roughly 286 million years old, surpassing the age of any known skin fossils by at least 21 million years. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Fossilized-skin_CREDIT_Current-Biology-Mooney_1m-scaled.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">This ancient skin</a>, which adorned an early Paleozoic reptile, boasts a distinctive pebbled texture, bearing a striking resemblance to modern-day crocodile skin.</p>



<p>This discovery marks the oldest known example of epidermis preservation in terrestrial reptiles, birds, and mammals. It highlights the evolutionary significance of the outermost skin layer in adapting to life on land.</p>



<p>The fossilized skin, along with other specimens, was extracted from the Richards Spur limestone cave system in Oklahoma, a site renowned for its unique preservation conditions.</p>



<p>Ethan Mooney, a paleontology graduate student at the <a href="https://www.utoronto.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Toronto</a> and the study's first author, expressed his excitement. </p>



<p>“Every now and then we get an exceptional opportunity to glimpse back into deep time,” said Mooney. “These types of discoveries can really enrich our understanding and perception of these pioneering animals.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fossilized-skin-is-a-rarity">Fossilized skin is a rarity</h2>



<p>The rarity of soft tissue fossilization makes this find particularly significant. The researchers believe that a combination of fine clay sediments, oil seepage, and an oxygen-poor cave environment at <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richards_Spur" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Richards Spur</a> played a pivotal role in preserving the skin.</p>



<p>“Animals would have fallen into this cave system during the early <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saber-toothed-predator-was-king-prior-to-the-great-dying/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Permian</a> and been buried in very fine clay sediments that delayed the decay process,” Mooney elaborates. </p>



<p>“But the kicker is that this cave system was also an active oil seepage site during the Permian, and interactions between hydrocarbons in petroleum and tar are likely what allowed this skin to be preserved.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-small-size-big-science">Small size, big science</h2>



<p>Despite its diminutive size -- smaller than a fingernail -- the fossilized skin revealed detailed epidermal tissues under microscopic examination by coauthor Tea Maho of the <a href="https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Toronto Mississauga</a>. </p>



<p>These tissues are characteristic of amniotes, a group of terrestrial vertebrates that includes reptiles, birds, and mammals, evolved from amphibian ancestors during the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-is-a-tully-monster-and-why-should-we-care/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Carboniferous Period</a>.</p>



<p>“We were totally shocked by what we saw because it’s completely unlike anything we would have expected,” says Mooney. </p>



<p>“Finding such an old skin fossil is an exceptional opportunity to peer into the past and see what the skin of some of these earliest animals may have looked like.”</p>

<p>Climate change is increasingly recognized as a critical threat to the world's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/californias-forests-are-losing-their-ability-to-recover/">forests</a>, and a recent study highlights the severity of this issue for forest carbon sequestration, particularly in the United States.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research, conducted by <a href="https://www.ufl.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Florida</a> researchers J. Aaron Hogan and Jeremy W. Lichstein, involved a comprehensive analysis of U.S. Forest Service data.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-productivity-nbsp">Forest productivity&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The experts analyzed data from 1999 to 2020, including 113,806 measurements in non-plantation forests. The goal of the study was to assess how forests across the country are responding to the changing climate.</p>



<p>The analysis revealed a pronounced difference in forest health and productivity between the eastern and western United States.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In the West, severe climate impacts have led to a marked decline in tree growth and biomass accumulation. By contrast, the East has experienced a slight increase in growth, attributed to milder climate effects.</p>

<p>“We are witnessing changes in forest functioning as forest ecosystems respond to global change drivers, such as carbon-dioxide-fertilization and climate change,” said Hogan. “It is the future balance of these drivers which will determine the functioning of forests in the coming years to decades.”</p>



<p>While some drivers, such as droughts and pathogens, have negative effects on forest productivity, carbon-dioxide fertilization could potentially boost productivity.</p>



<p>“The U.S. Forest Service has been monitoring the growth and survival of over a million trees across the U.S. for multiple decades,” said Lichstein. “We were interested to see if their data provided evidence for increased rates of tree growth, as predicted by the carbon-dioxide fertilization hypothesis.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accelerating-climate-change-nbsp">Accelerating climate change&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The findings challenge the assumption that forests will continue to increase their carbon storage capabilities. In reality, ecosystem carbon storage might decrease, contributing to more atmospheric carbon and accelerated climate change.</p>



<p>“Our study suggests that future projections of climate and sea-level rise may be too optimistic because, in reality, ecosystems are likely to store less carbon in the future,” explained Lichstein. “Less ecosystem carbon storage means more carbon in the atmosphere and therefore more warming and accelerating climate change.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-regional-variation">Regional variation</h2>



<p>The results of the study highlight the fact that the impacts of climate change vary by region. This variation can push forests beyond climate thresholds, potentially flipping them from carbon sinks to carbon sources.</p>



<p>“Ecosystem carbon sequestration is not guaranteed to be permanent, and it can be reversed by climate change,” said Lichstein. “This reversal is already happening in the Western U.S., and there are signs that it may also be happening in other drought-impacted regions of the world, such as the Amazon.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-declining-productivity-nbsp">Declining productivity&nbsp;</h2>



<p>While wildfires are a significant concern, the experts found that the decline in western forests' productivity is not solely due to tree mortality from fires but also from declining growth rates caused by adverse climate conditions.</p>



<p>“We hear a lot about wildfires in the Western U.S., which kill a lot of trees and release carbon to the atmosphere,” said Lichstein. “But our study shows that additional ecosystem carbon loss in western forests is occurring due to declining tree growth rates.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-greenhouse-gas-emissions-nbsp">Greenhouse gas emissions&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers emphasize the need to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions to preserve forest carbon sinks and slow the pace of climate change.</p>



<p>“We must have healthy forests in connection with emissions reduction to restore the global carbon balance and limit climate change,” said Hogan.</p>



<p>“Our results highlight the need for reduced global greenhouse gas emissions,” said Lichstein. “Without the emissions reductions that scientists have been urging for decades, forest carbon sinks will likely weaken, which will accelerate the pace of climate change.”</p>

<p>The research, conducted by experts at the Columbia University <a href="https://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mailman School of Public Health</a>, highlights persistent inequities in environmental health impacts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-environmental-justice-nbsp">Environmental justice&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers investigated the complex interaction between air pollution emission reductions and socio-demographic factors, shedding light on an aspect of environmental justice that has been less explored.</p>

<p>The study was focused on changes in U.S. air pollution emissions over a 40-year period following the Clean Air Act (CAA) in 1970. </p>



<p>Unlike previous studies that concentrated on air pollution disparities at a single time point and focused more on pollutant concentrations, this research takes a new approach by examining emissions. This focus is crucial as emissions have more direct implications for regulations and policy-making.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-research-was-conducted">How the research was conducted</h2>



<p>The researchers utilized county-level data across the contiguous U.S. to assess racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in the changes in air pollution emissions from 1970 to 2010.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team analyzed emissions data from the Global Burden of Disease Major Air Pollution Sources inventory, covering six pollution source sectors: industry, energy, agriculture, on-road transportation, commercial, and residential.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-findings">Key findings</h2>



<p>The findings revealed that, on average, U.S. air pollution emissions have declined significantly from most source sectors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts found notable reductions in sulfur dioxide from industrial and energy generation activities, and moderate decreases in nitrogen oxide emissions from transportation, commercial activities, and energy generation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, emissions from agriculture (ammonia) and residential sectors (organic carbon particles) did not follow this downward trend. Residential emissions are primarily associated with the use of solid biofuels for indoor heating.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disproportionate-benefits">Disproportionate benefits</h2>



<p>A concerning aspect of the study's findings is the uneven nature of these reductions. The researchers found that counties with higher percentages of Hispanic or Indian American populations experienced relative increases in emissions from various sectors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Furthermore, higher median family incomes within a county were linked to greater reductions in emissions across nearly all sectors, except agriculture. These disparities indicate that certain populations have not benefited equally from the overall improvements in air quality.</p>



<p>“Air pollution emissions do not perfectly capture population air pollution exposure, and we also know that neighborhood-level air pollution inequities are common, which we were not able to analyze in this study given the data at hand,” noted study senior author Professor Marianthi-Anna Kioumourtzoglou.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-nbsp">Broader implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“In this study, we provide information about potential racial/ethnic and socioeconomic inequalities in air pollution reductions nationwide from major air pollution sources, which can inform regulators and complement local-level analysis," explained Professor Kioumourtzoglou.</p>



<p>“Policies specifically targeting reductions in overburdened populations could support more just reductions in air pollution and reduce disparities in air pollution exposure,” said Dr. Nunez.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This is an important lesson gained from 53 years of Clean Air Act implementation, which is particularly relevant as we develop policies to transition to renewable energy sources, which will have a collateral impact on air quality and, as a result, on public health.”</p>

U.S. air pollution levels have dropped, but not for everyone

<p>Scientists from UC Santa Barbara and McGill University have brought to light a collection of well-preserved microfossils, unveiling a surprising diversity of the oldest eukaryotic organisms that existed 1.64 billion years ago.</p>



<p>This research details a critical period in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eukaryotic-cells-origin/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">eukaryotes</a>, a major domain of life that includes plants, animals, fungi, and various other organisms with complex cellular structures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-the-oldest-eukaryote-organisms">Studying the oldest eukaryote organisms</h2>



<p>Lead author <a href="https://www.geol.ucsb.edu/people/leigh-anne-riedman-0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Leigh Anne Riedman</a>, an assistant researcher in UCSB’s <a href="https://www.geol.ucsb.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Department of Earth Science</a>, emphasized the significance of these findings. </p>



<p>"These are among the oldest eukaryotes that have ever been discovered," Riedman stated. "Yet, even in these first records, we're seeing a lot of diversity." </p>



<p>This challenges the previously held belief that early eukaryotes were relatively uniform, with significant diversification occurring much later, around 800 million years ago.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-collecting-fossils-down-under">Collecting fossils down under</h2>



<p>The team's exploration began in the Australian Outback in late 2019. Riedman collected approximately 430 samples from eight cores drilled by a prospecting company, now stored in the <a href="https://www.nwtgeoscience.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Northern Territory Geological Survey</a>'s library. </p>



<p>The selected cores spanned about 500 meters of stratigraphy, encapsulating around 133 million years of geological history, with a focus on a period of intense deposition lasting about 15 million years.</p>



<p>Riedman's return to the United States with shale and mudstone samples marked the start of an intensive analysis process. </p>



<p>These remnants of an ancient coastal ecosystem, which alternated between shallow mudflats and coastal lagoons, held the key to understanding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microfossils-reveal-a-leap-in-lifes-complexity-2-4-billion-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early eukaryotic life</a>. </p>



<p>A careful application of hydrofluoric acid dissolved the surrounding rock, leaving behind the invaluable microfossils for microscopic examination.</p>



<p>"We were hoping to find species with interesting and different characteristics to their cell walls," Riedman explained. These characteristics could provide insights into the cellular activities of these early life forms. </p>



<p>However, as Riedman noted, reaching any definitive conclusions about the cellular interiors would be challenging, given that the fossils preserved only the exteriors of the cells.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-remarkable-diversity-and-complexity">Remarkable diversity and complexity</h2>



<p>The team, amazed by their findings, identified 26 taxa, including 10 previously unknown species. These fossils displayed intricate structures, such as evidence of cytoskeletons and internal vesicles, possibly precursors to modern Golgi bodies found in eukaryotic cells. </p>



<p>Additionally, some microbes exhibited complex cell walls composed of bound fibers, further suggesting advanced cellular structures.</p>



<p>Among the intriguing discoveries were cells with tiny trapdoors, a sign of sophisticated biological processes. These trapdoors are thought to have been used by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/organisms-called-protosterol-biota-lived-1-6-billion-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbes</a> to form cysts during unfavorable conditions, requiring a specialized mechanism to reopen. </p>



<p>“If you’re going to produce an enzyme that dissolves your cell wall, you need to be really careful about how you use that enzyme,” explained Leigh Anne Riedman, highlighting the unexpected complexity in these early life forms. </p>



<p>This finding indicates that such sophisticated abilities were present much earlier than previously assumed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-of-oldest-eukaryote-organisms">Evolution of oldest eukaryote organisms</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.geol.ucsb.edu/people/susannah-porter" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Susannah Porter</a>, a co-author and Earth science professor at <a href="https://www.ucsb.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Santa Barbara</a>, noted, “The assumption has always been that this is around the time that eukaryotes appeared. And now we think that people just haven’t explored older rocks.” </p>



<p>This revelation suggests that the history of eukaryotes on Earth could extend further back than previously believed. </p>



<p>Their study is part of a broader project aimed at understanding the environmental conditions and adaptations of early eukaryotes. </p>



<p>Riedman and Porter are particularly interested in determining whether these organisms thrived in oxygenated or anoxic environments. </p>



<p>The presence of aerobic metabolism or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-plankton-hold-a-long-record-of-ocean-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mitochondria</a> would imply an early acquisition of these organelles, offering a significant evolutionary advantage.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-back-to-move-forward">Looking back to move forward</h2>



<p>As Riedman and Porter continue their research, including studies of even older samples from Western Australia and Minnesota, they aim to provide a more detailed account of eukaryote diversity over time. </p>



<p>Collaborations with geochemists at <a href="https://www.mcgill.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">McGill University</a> are also underway, focusing on oxygen levels and preferred habitats of these ancient organisms.</p>



<p>“These results are a directive to go look for older material, older eukaryotes, because this is clearly not the beginning of eukaryotes on Earth,” Riedman stated, urging a deeper investigation into the origins of these complex life forms.</p>



<p>In summary, this important research challenges previous beliefs about the uniformity and later diversification of early eukaryotes, some of the oldest organisms on Earth. The team's exploration unearthed evidence of sophisticated cellular structures, such as cytoskeletons and internal vesicles, in ancient eukaryotic cells. </p>



<p>These findings, derived from ancient coastal ecosystem remnants, offer new insights into the early evolution of life and prompt further investigation into even older geological samples.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet <em>Archaeopteris</em>: the first modern tree</h2>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-today-s-climate">Lessons for today's climate</h2>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
