A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new and convincing evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.



The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that some unknown, nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.



“This finding by Perseverance is the closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars. The identification of a potential biosignature on the Red Planet is a groundbreaking discovery, and one that will advance our understanding of Mars,” said acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. 



“NASA’s commitment to conducting Gold Standard Science will continue as we pursue our goal of putting American boots on Mars’ rocky soil.”



The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. 



After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.



Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.



Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.



These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.



Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. 



That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. 



Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.



<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.



The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.



None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. 



NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.



The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.



The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.



Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.



Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.



The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.



Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;



“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;



“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. 



Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. 



That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.



If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.



Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.



The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. 



They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.



Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.



PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.



As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.

NASA announces "groundbreaking discovery" of life on Mars

A recent study published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41558-022-01592-2">Nature Climate Change</a> has found that humanity is not on track to avoid the deadliest effects of climate change.&nbsp;



Study lead author Holly Jean Buck is an assistant professor of Environment and Sustainability at the University at Buffalo. "Our plans are not adequate to meet the goal of limiting the earth’s temperature increase to no more than 1.5℃ by 2050," said Buck.



The researchers argue that a better understanding of "residual emissions" is essential to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.



Residual emissions are those that remain after efforts to eliminate such emissions have been implemented. For example, industries such as agriculture and shipping are likely to continue releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere even with a concerted effort to eliminate all emissions.&nbsp;



The United Nations' panel of scientific advisors says that the world must reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions this century to limit the Earth's temperature increase, and residual emissions would need to be balanced by techniques that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



The researchers analyzed long-term low-emission strategies submitted by 50 countries and found that only 28 quantified the amount of residual emissions expected by 2050. Buck and her colleagues argue that managing residual emissions is critical to achieving the net-zero goal, and have identified several steps they say are necessary to tackle the problem.&nbsp;



The first step is to develop clear projections for the amount of residual emissions. The amount, the source, and the type of gas - whether it be carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases - need to be identified so that appropriate offsetting strategies can be developed.&nbsp;



Such strategies include enhancing existing carbon sinks, which are reservoirs that absorb more carbon from the atmosphere than they release. Naturally occurring carbon sinks include the ocean, forests, and soil.



"We can enhance carbon sinks," Buck said. "We can plant trees, we can conserve land, we can engineer carbon removal, but it’s not enough to bring us to net-zero by 2050 with these projections of residual emissions."



The study highlights the importance of residual emissions and the need for greater action to address the issue. According to countries’ long-term strategies, the average level of residual emissions by 2050 will be 18 percent of current emissions, an amount that cannot easily be offset by removing carbon. Buck and her collaborators stress the need for urgent action to address the problem of residual emissions if we are to limit the deadly effects of climate change.



Residual emissions present another challenge that needs to be addressed, specifically in terms of the approach to achieving net-zero emissions. The question is whether it is a provisional target that will be revised with further emission cuts or a permanent solution that requires ongoing offsetting.&nbsp;



While some carbon-emitting activities, like aviation and shipping, are recognized as being extremely difficult to reduce, others may be technically achievable but present economic and political hurdles. By clarifying these issues, a solid foundation is established for incorporating residual emissions into plans to attain net-zero emissions by 2050.



What exactly is the net-zero emissions goal?



The net-zero emissions goal is an ambitious and critical target for combating climate change. It involves reducing greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible and offsetting any remaining emissions by removing an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This will lead to a balance between the amount of greenhouse gases emitted and removed, resulting in a net-zero emissions scenario.

What happens if the "net-zero" goal isn't met?



“More frequent floods,” said Buck. “Devastating heat waves. Extreme economic damage from extreme weather. Agricultural production will be affected.”



While the article identifies significant challenges to reducing residual emissions, it identifies those challenges as opportunities for research and cooperation. “We hope to affect policy makers and non-government organizations that are working to achieve net zero,” said Buck. “We can achieve it. I’m hopeful we will.”

Residual emissions must be addressed to reach net zero

Air pollution, a major consequence of human activity, has long been a pressing environmental issue. The presence of hydroxide (OH) in the atmosphere plays a crucial role in the breakdown and elimination of pollutants.&nbsp;



While the process of OH formation has been studied extensively, recent research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests that our understanding of OH generation might have been incomplete all along.



A research team, including Sergey Nizkorodov, a professor of chemistry at the <a href="https://uci.edu/">University of California, Irvine</a>, has discovered a previously unknown mechanism for the creation of OH. This groundbreaking finding could lead to a better understanding of how the air clears itself of pollutants and greenhouse gases, which are known to react with and be eliminated by OH molecules.



“You need OH to oxidize hydrocarbons, otherwise they would build up in the atmosphere indefinitely,” explained Nizkorodov. It has long been known that OH is an essential component in atmospheric chemistry, initiating reactions that break down airborne pollutants and removing toxic chemicals like sulfur dioxide and nitric oxide from the air.&nbsp;



“Thus, having a full understanding of its sources and sinks is key to understanding and mitigating air pollution," said study lead author Christian George, an atmospheric chemist at the <a href="https://www.universite-lyon.fr/version-anglaise/universite-de-lyon-en-6709.kjsp">University of Lyon</a>.



Previously, researchers believed that sunlight played a major role in the formation of OH. “The conventional wisdom is that you have to make OH by photochemistry or redox chemistry. You have to have sunlight or metals acting as catalysts,” said Nizkorodov.&nbsp;



However, the new study reveals that OH can also be created spontaneously in the unique conditions on the surface of airborne water droplets, without the need for sunlight or metal catalysts.



The experts found that the strong electric field that exists at the interface between airborne water droplets and the surrounding air can generate OH through an entirely new mechanism. This discovery challenges long-held assumptions and opens up new avenues of research in the field of atmospheric chemistry.



The team built on research from Stanford University scientists led by Richard Zare, who had reported spontaneous formation of hydrogen peroxide on the surfaces of water droplets.



To study OH concentrations, the UCI scientists measured OH levels in different vials containing either an air-water surface or only water without air. They then tracked OH production in darkness by including a "probe" molecule that fluoresces when it reacts with OH.



The results showed that OH production rates in darkness were equivalent to or even exceeded those from sunlight exposure. "Enough of OH will be created to compete with other known OH sources," said Nizkorodov. "At night, when there is no photochemistry, OH is still produced and it is produced at a higher rate than would otherwise happen."



Nizkorodov explained that the findings could significantly change our understanding of the sources of OH and would, therefore, alter how other researchers build computer models that forecast air pollution. "OH is an important oxidant inside water droplets and the main assumption in the models is that OH comes from the air, it's not produced in the droplet directly," he said.



To determine whether this new OH production mechanism plays a role in air pollution, Nizkorodov suggested performing carefully designed experiments in the real atmosphere in different parts of the world. He added that UCI was a prime place for such research to continue happening because other labs at UCI, such as that of Ann Marie Carlton, professor of chemistry, focused their efforts on the role water droplets play in the atmosphere.



The project was funded by the European Research Council and involved researchers from France's University Claude Bernard, China's Guangdong University of Technology, and Israel's Weizmann Institute.



Nizkorodov expects the new findings to create a ripple in the atmospheric research community. "A lot of people will read this but will not initially believe it and will either try to reproduce it or try to do experiments to prove it wrong," he said. "There will be many lab experiments following up on this for sure."



As scientists continue to investigate this newfound OH generation process, it may lead to improved strategies for mitigating air pollution, and a deeper understanding of how the Earth's atmosphere naturally clears itself of harmful pollutants and greenhouse gases. This breakthrough discovery could have far-reaching implications not only for the scientific community but also for the future health of our planet. The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.pnas.org/">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>.

Scientists uncover new way that Earth cleans its atmosphere

NASA’s <a href="https://webb.nasa.gov/">James Webb Space Telescope</a> has captured a stunning mid-infrared image of the Cassiopeia A (Cas A) supernova remnant, created by a stellar explosion that occurred 340 years ago. The remnant is the youngest known from an exploding, massive star in our galaxy, making it a unique opportunity to learn more about how such supernovae occur.



Danny Milisavljevic of <a href="https://www.purdue.edu/">Purdue University</a> is the principal investigator of the Webb program that captured these observations. “Cas A represents our best opportunity to look at the debris field of an exploded star and run a kind of stellar autopsy to understand what type of star was there beforehand and how that star exploded," said Milisavljevic.



The new mid-infrared image provides incredible detail, revealing features that were previously unobservable. “Compared to previous infrared images, we see incredible detail that we haven't been able to access before," said Tea Temim of Princeton University, a co-investigator on the program.



Cassiopeia A is a well-studied prototypical supernova remnant that has been observed by a number of ground-based and space-based observatories, including NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. Combining multi-wavelength observations provides scientists with a more comprehensive understanding of the remnant.



This new image provides valuable insights into the explosion and its aftermath. Scientists can use it to analyze the composition and distribution of the various elements present in the remnant, shedding light on the processes that occur during a supernova explosion.



“This new image is a remarkable achievement, and we are excited to see what further insights it will provide,” said Milisavljevic.



Examining the details



The image is a composite of infrared and visible-light wavelengths, and its striking colors reveal different components of the supernova remnant.



At the outer shell of the bubble, there are curtains of material appearing orange and red, which emit from warm dust. These curtains represent the area where ejected material from the exploded star is colliding with surrounding circumstellar gas and dust. Meanwhile, the inner part of the outer shell consists of mottled filaments of bright pink that contain clumps and knots. This material comes from the star itself and shines due to a mix of various heavy elements such as oxygen, argon, and neon, as well as dust emission.



"We're still trying to disentangle all these sources of emission," said Ilse De Looze of Ghent University in Belgium, one of the co-investigators on the program.



The image also shows the fainter wisps of stellar material near the cavity's interior. However, the most prominent feature is the loop represented in green, which extends across the right side of the central cavity. "We've nicknamed it the Green Monster in honor of Fenway Park in Boston. If you look closely, you'll notice that it's pockmarked with what look like mini-bubbles," said Milisavljevic. "The shape and complexity are unexpected and challenging to understand."



This new image provides scientists with more information about the Cas A supernova remnant, and they will continue to analyze it to better understand the various components of the explosion.



The origins of cosmic dust and humanity



Astronomers hope that by studying the Cas A remnant, they may gain a better understanding of where cosmic dust comes from. This is an important question to answer, as even very young galaxies in the early universe are found to be suffused with massive quantities of dust. It has been difficult to explain the origins of this dust without invoking supernovae, which are known to spew large quantities of heavy elements across space.



However, existing observations of supernovae have not yet been able to fully explain the amount of dust seen in those early galaxies. By studying Cas A with the James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers hope to gain a better understanding of its dust content. This will in turn inform our understanding of where the building blocks of planets and life itself come from.



“In Cas A, we can spatially resolve regions that have different gas compositions and look at what types of dust were formed in those regions,” explained Remy Indebetouw, an astrophysicist at the University of Virginia.



The Cas A remnant is a result of a supernova explosion that occurred around 350 years ago. This explosion was crucial for life as we know it, as it spread elements such as calcium and iron across interstellar space. These elements then went on to seed new generations of stars and planets, including our own.



“By understanding the process of exploding stars, we’re reading our own origin story,” said Milisavljevic. “I’m going to spend the rest of my career trying to understand what’s in this data set.”



The Cas A remnant spans about 10 light-years and is located 11,000 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. Observations of this remnant may help answer a number of science questions, including the origin of cosmic dust and the process of supernova explosions. As we continue to unravel the mysteries of the universe, studying the Cas A remnant will undoubtedly play an important role.



About the James Webb Telescope



The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is set to be the largest, most powerful, and most complex space telescope ever built. Named after James E. Webb, a prominent NASA administrator during the 1960s, the telescope is a joint project between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).

One of the key features of the JWST is its large mirror, which is 6.5 meters in diameter, more than three times the size of the Hubble Space Telescope's mirror. A new study from the <a href="https://medicine.iu.edu/">Indiana University School of Medicine</a> has found that deaths by suicide significantly increase during the week of a full moon. The research, which was published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s44192-023-00035-4">Discover Mental Health</a>, analyzed data from the Marion County coroner’s office in Indiana about suicides that took place from 2012-2016.



Study lead author Dr. Alexander Niculescu explained the rationale behind the research: “We wanted to analyze the hypothesis that suicides are increased during the period around full moons and determine if high-risk patients should be followed more closely during those times.”



The researchers found that people over the age of 55 showed an even higher increase in suicides during the week of a full moon. In addition, the experts looked at the time of day and month when suicides occurred and found that 3 to 4 p.m. and the month of September were peak times.



“From a clinical perspective and a public health perspective, we found some important take-home messages in this study,” said Dr. Niculescu. “High-risk patients should possibly be followed more closely the week of the full moon, during late afternoons and perhaps the month of September.”



The team of researchers also previously developed blood biomarker tests for other mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as for pain. In this study, they were able to use blood samples previously taken by the coroner from some of the people who died by suicide to determine which biomarkers were present.



“We tested a list of top blood biomarkers for suicidality that we identified in previous studies,” said Dr. Niculescu. “The biomarkers for suicidality that are predictive of death by suicide during full moon, peak hour of day and peak month of the year compared to outside of those periods appear to be genes that regulate the body’s own internal clock, so called ‘circadian clock’. Using the biomarkers, we also found people with alcohol-use disorder or depression may be at higher risk during these time periods.”



According to Dr. Niculescu, the surge in suicides during the full moon phase could be attributed to the heightened luminosity. The body's circadian rhythm, which regulates our sleep-wake cycle over 24 hours, is significantly influenced by the surrounding light. Moonlight could be disrupting people's natural rhythms during the period when it should be dimmer.



“The effect of ambient light and body clocks in suicide needs to be studied more closely, along with how people sleep and their exposure to light,” Niculescu said. “Changes in light can affect vulnerable people, in conjunction with other risk factors.”



Dr. Niculescu mentioned that there are two additional peak periods for suicides. The first peak occurs from 3 to 4 p.m. and may be connected to the accumulation of stressors throughout the day, as well as a reduction in daylight which leads to lower expression of circadian clock genes and cortisol. The second peak happens in September, which coincides with the end of summer vacations and the onset of seasonal affective disorder symptoms as the amount of daylight decreases during this time of year.



“Our work shows the full moon, fall season and late afternoon are temporal windows of increased risk for suicide, particularly in individuals who suffer from depression or alcohol use disorders."



In the future, Dr. Niculescu hopes to study if exposure to screens at night contributes to increased suicidality in people, especially younger people. “Some people have a full moon in their hand every night. It’s an area we absolutely need to study further.”



While the idea that a full moon can cause strange behavior has been around for centuries, there is little scientific evidence to support the claim. However, this study provides some evidence that there may be a correlation between the full moon and an increased risk of suicide, particularly among older adults.



It's important to note that correlation does not necessarily equal causation, and the study has limitations, such as being limited to data from one county in Indiana. Further research will be needed to determine if these findings can be replicated in other locations and populations.



Nonetheless, the findings provide important insights into the patterns of suicide, and could help inform suicide prevention efforts. As Niculescu noted, “These findings underscore the importance of more research into the factors contributing to suicide risk, and suggest that paying closer attention to the timing of suicides could help save lives.”



Full moons and human behavior

Suicide rate increases during the week of a full moon

A new study from the Indiana University School of Medicine...

NASA’s <a href="https://webb.nasa.gov/">James Webb Space Telescope</a> has captured a stunning image of the solar system’s seventh planet, Uranus, which showcases its dramatic rings and bright features in the planet’s atmosphere.&nbsp;



The image, which was taken by Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam), combines data from two filters at 1.4 and 3.0 microns, shown in blue and orange, respectively. The planet appears to have a blue hue in the resulting representative-color image.



The sensitivity of Webb’s NIRCam has allowed scientists to observe the faintest dusty rings around Uranus, which have only been previously imaged by two other facilities: the Voyager 2 spacecraft as it flew past the planet in 1986, and the Keck Observatory with advanced adaptive optics.



“With the infrared wavelengths and extra sensitivity of Webb, we see more detail, showing how dynamic the atmosphere of Uranus really is,” said Heidi Hammel, executive vice president of the <a href="https://www.aura-astronomy.org/">Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy</a>.



Uranus is unique in that it rotates on its side, at roughly a 90-degree angle from the plane of its orbit, causing extreme seasons as the planet’s poles experience many years of constant sunlight followed by an equal number of years of complete darkness.&nbsp;



Currently, it is late spring for the northern pole, which is visible in the image; Uranus’ northern summer will be in 2028. When Voyager 2 visited Uranus, it was summer at the south pole, which is now on the ‘dark side’ of the planet, out of view and facing the darkness of space.



Webb’s image also reveals a unique polar cap at the right side of the planet, which appears when the pole enters direct sunlight in the summer and disappears in the fall. The polar cap is a mystery to scientists, and the Webb data may help explain its mechanism.&nbsp;



The image also shows a subtle enhanced brightening at the center of the polar cap, which has not been seen as clearly with other powerful telescopes like the Hubble Space Telescope and Keck Observatory.



At the edge of the polar cap lies a bright cloud, as well as a few fainter extended features just beyond the cap’s edge. A second very bright cloud is seen at the planet’s left limb. These clouds are typical for Uranus in infrared wavelengths and are likely connected to storm activity.



Uranus is characterized as an ice giant due to the chemical makeup of its interior. Most of its mass is thought to be a hot, dense fluid of "icy" materials, such as water, methane, and ammonia, above a small rocky core.&nbsp;



Uranus has 13 known rings, and 11 of them are visible in the Webb image. Nine of the rings are classified as the main rings of the planet, and two are the fainter dusty rings that were discovered during the Voyager 2 flyby in 1986. Scientists expect that future Webb images of Uranus will reveal the two faint outer rings that were discovered with Hubble during the 2007 ring-plane crossing.



Webb also captured many of Uranus’ 27 known moons, with the six brightest identified in the wide-view image. This was only a short, 12-minute exposure image of Uranus with just two filters. However, scientists believe that this is just the beginning of what Webb can do when observing this mysterious planet.



The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine identified Uranus science as a priority in its 2023-2033 Planetary Science and Astrobiology decadal survey, and additional studies of Uranus are happening now. Scientists are excited to continue exploring this intriguing and unique planet with the James Webb Space Telescope.



More about Uranus



Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun in our solar system and the third largest planet by size. It is unique among the planets in our solar system because it rotates on its side, with its poles pointing towards and away from the Sun. This unusual axial tilt is thought to have been caused by a collision with a planet-sized object early in the history of the solar system.



Uranus is often referred to as an "ice giant" because it is composed mainly of ices such as water, methane, and ammonia, as well as rock and metal. Its atmosphere is primarily made up of hydrogen and helium, with trace amounts of methane that give the planet its distinctive blue-green color.



Uranus has a system of 27 known moons, the largest of which is called Titania. The moons of Uranus are named after characters from the works of William Shakespeare and Alexander Pope.

What is the James Webb Space Telescope?



The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a large, space-based observatory designed to observe the universe in infrared light. It is named after James E. Webb, who served as the second administrator of NASA from 1961 to 1968 and played a significant role in the Apollo program.



JWST is a collaborative project between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). It is scheduled to be launched in late 2021 (as of my knowledge cutoff), and will be positioned at the second Lagrange point (L2), which is located about 1.5 million kilometers (about 930,000 miles) from Earth.



The telescope has a large primary mirror, 6.5 meters (about 21 feet) in diameter, which is made of 18 hexagonal segments. It also has four scientific instruments that will allow it to observe the universe in unprecedented detail. These instruments include a near-infrared camera, a near-infrared spectrograph, a mid-infrared instrument, and a fine guidance sensor/near-infrared imager and slitless spectrograph.



JWST's observations will help us to better understand the early universe, the formation of galaxies and stars, and the properties of exoplanets, among other things. It is expected to be a major tool for astrophysics and cosmology research for many years to come.

James Webb captures incredible new image of Uranus

A team of scientists led by the <a href="http://palaeogenetics.com/">Center for Paleogenetics</a> in Stockholm has recently compared the genomes of woolly mammoths to those of modern-day <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/elephants-are-forest-gardeners-that-help-reduce-global-warming/">elephants</a> to find out what made these mammoths unique. The analyses revealed that, although many of the mammoths’ trademark features, such as their wooly coats and large fat deposits, were already encoded in the earliest woolly mammoths, these and other traits became more defined during evolution.



“We wanted to know what makes a mammoth a woolly mammoth,” said study lead author David Díez-del-Molino, an expert in Population Genomics and Ancient DNA at the Center for Paleogenetics. “Woolly mammoths have some very characteristic morphological features, like their thick fur and small ears, that you obviously expect based on what frozen specimens look like, but there are also many other adaptations like fat metabolism and cold perception that are not so evident because they’re at the molecular level.”



In order to identify genes that had accrued a large number of mutations in woolly mammoths, the experts compared the genomes of 23 Siberian mammoths with those of 28 modern-day African and Asian elephants. While 22 of the mammoths were relatively modern, having lived in the past 100,000 years, one of the genomes belonged to one of the oldest known woolly mammoths, Chukochya, who lived about 700,000 years ago.



“Having the Chukochya genome allowed us to identify a number of genes that evolved during the lifespan of the woolly mammoth as a species,” explained senior author Love Dalén, professor of Evolutionary Genomics at the Center for Palaeogenetics. “This allows us to study evolution in real time, and we can say these specific mutations are unique to woolly mammoths, and they didn’t exist in its ancestors.”&nbsp;



Many of the adaptive genes the experts discovered were related to living in cold environments and are shared by unrelated modern-day Arctic mammals such as reindeer or polar bears. Moreover, since Chukochya’s genome shared about 91.7 percent of the mutations that caused protein-coding changes in the more modern woolly mammoths, many of their defining traits – such as thick fur, fat metabolism, and cold-perception abilities – were most likely present when the woolly mammoths diverged from their ancestors, the steppe mammoths.&nbsp;



However, these traits developed further as the mammoths evolved. “The very earliest woolly mammoths weren’t fully evolved. They possibly had larger ears, and their wool was different—perhaps less insulating and fluffy compared to later woolly mammoths,” Dalén explained.



Finally, more modern woolly mammoths had several immune mutations in T cell antigens which were not found in their ancestors, and may have been selected to confer them enhanced cell-mediated immunity in response to emerging viral pathogens.



Since all the mammoths investigated in this study were from Siberia, the scientists aim to include in future research North American woolly mammoths too. “We showed a couple of years ago that there was gene flow between woolly mammoths and the ancestors of Colombian mammoths, so that’s something that we will need to account for because North American woolly mammoths might have been carrying non-woolly mammoth genes as well,” Dalén concluded.

The study highlights the importance of internet access, particularly in developing countries, where it can make all the difference between people being able to access education, staying healthy, finding a home, and securing employment or not. Even in countries with offline opportunities, such as accessing social security schemes or finding housing, people without internet access are at a significant disadvantage compared to those who do.



Dr. Reglitz suggests that internet access is a practical necessity for a range of socio-economic human rights, and therefore, it should be considered a standalone human right. He calls for public authorities to provide internet access free of charge for those who cannot afford it, as well as offering training in basic digital skills for all citizens and protecting online access from arbitrary interference by states and private companies.



"The internet has unique and fundamental value for the realization of many of our socio-economic human rights - allowing users to submit job applications, send medical information to healthcare professionals, manage their finances and business, make social security claims, and submit educational assessments," explained Dr. Reglitz.



He believes that the internet's structure enables a mutual exchange of information that has the potential to contribute to the progress of humankind as a whole - a potential that should be protected and deployed by declaring access to the internet a human right.



The study highlights the many areas where internet access is critical for people to live with dignity and security, particularly in developed countries.



Dr. Reglitz's research outlines five areas in developed countries where internet access is vital to exercising socio-economic human rights: education, health, housing, social security, and work.&nbsp;



In developed countries, students who do not have internet access at home are at a disadvantage in obtaining a good education as essential learning aids and study materials are available online.&nbsp;



Similarly, accessing in-person healthcare is challenging in remote communities, particularly in the US and Canada. Online healthcare can help to bridge this gap.&nbsp;



In addition, significant parts of the rental housing market have moved online, and accessing public services today is often unreasonably difficult without internet access.&nbsp;



Jobs are increasingly advertised online, and people must be able to access relevant websites to make effective use of their right to work.



The study also highlights similar problems for people without internet access in developing countries. For example, in sub-Saharan Africa, 20 percent of children aged 6 to 11 are out of school. Many children face long walks to their schools, where class sizes are routinely very large in crumbling, unsanitary schools with insufficient numbers of teachers.&nbsp;



However, online education tools can make a significant difference, allowing children living remotely from schools to complete their education. More students can be taught more effectively if teaching materials are available digitally and pupils do not have to share books.



Dr. Reglitz's research also notes the role that internet access can play in improving healthcare in developing countries. For example, digital health tools can help diagnose illnesses, and in Kenya, a smartphone-based Portable Eye Examination Kit (Peek) has been used to test people's eyesight and identify those in need of treatment, especially in remote areas underserved by medical practitioners.



Financial inclusion is another area where internet access is critical in developing countries. People are often confronted with a lack of brick-and-mortar banks, and internet access makes financial inclusion possible. Small businesses can also raise money through online crowdfunding platforms, and the World Bank expects such sums raised in Africa to rise from $32 million in 2015 to $2.5 billion in 2025.



Dr. Reglitz's study provides valuable insights into the importance of internet access for exercising socio-economic human rights. As the world becomes increasingly digitized, it is vital that policymakers take steps to ensure that everyone has access to the internet, regardless of where they live. By doing so, we can help to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to exercise their human rights and live with dignity and security.

Internet access should be a basic human right

According to a new study conducted by researchers from <a href="https://www.chalmers.se/en/">Chalmers University of Technology</a> and Lund University, the use of coal power is not declining rapidly enough to meet the Paris Agreement's target of limiting global warming to a maximum of two degrees Celsius.&nbsp;



Instead, the world appears to be headed towards a temperature increase of 2.5-3 degrees Celsius. However, the researchers suggest that it is still feasible to prevent even higher warming.



"More and more countries are promising that they will phase out coal from their energy systems, which is positive. But unfortunately, their commitments are not strong enough. If we are to have a realistic chance of meeting the 2-degree target, the phasing out of coal needs to happen faster," explained Professor Aleh Cherp.



Phasing out coal is necessary to prevent the world's temperature increase from exceeding two degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels. For the study, experts from the research program Mistra Electrification analyzed the pledged commitments of 72 countries to phase out their coal use by 2022-2050.



In the best-case scenario, the researchers found that it is possible to keep the temperature increase at two degrees Celsius. However, this assumes that China and India will begin phasing out their coal use within the next five years and that their phase-out will be as rapid as that of the UK, which is the fastest ever seen in a large country, and faster than Germany has promised. This may create inequities that will need to be addressed by international policies.



The researchers also developed scenarios that they consider to be the most realistic. These scenarios indicate that the Earth is headed towards a global warming of 2.5-3 degrees Celsius.



"The countries' commitments are not sufficient, not even among the most ambitious countries. In addition, Russia's invasion of Ukraine may prevent some countries from phasing out coal as they promised," said Professor Jessica Jewell.



The study highlights that the 72 countries' commitments to phase out coal power are similar to each other and in line with historical data for how quickly coal power was phased out in the past. However, given the urgency of the climate crisis, more ambitious and rapid action is needed to meet the Paris Agreement's target and avoid catastrophic levels of global warming.

Coal use is not declining fast enough to slow global warming

New evidence collected from the eastern Shennongjia Forestry District of China’s Hubei Province suggests that the Earth was not completely frozen during the Marinoan Ice Age, 635 million years ago, as previously thought.&nbsp;



While the ice age, one of the most extreme in Earth’s history, created glaciers from pole to pole and persisted for 15 million years, new findings suggest that there were patches of open water in some of the shallow mid-latitude seas.



“We called this ice age ‘Snowball Earth,’” said Thomas Algeo, a professor of Geosciences at the <a href="https://www.uc.edu/">University of Cincinnati</a>’s College of Arts and Sciences. “We believed that Earth had frozen over entirely during this long ice age. But maybe it was more of a ‘Slushball Earth.’”



The study was published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41467-023-37172-x">Nature Communications</a> and led by Huyue Song from the China University of Geosciences, with contributions from researchers from the United Kingdom and the United States.&nbsp;



The researchers found benthic phototrophic macroalgae in black shale dating back more than 600 million years, which requires light from the sun to convert water and carbon dioxide into energy through photosynthesis. They conducted an isotopic analysis and found that habitable open-ocean conditions were more extensive than previously thought, extending into oceans that fall between the tropics and the polar regions and providing refuge for single-celled and multi-celled organisms during the waning stages of the Marinoan ice age.



“We present a new Snowball Earth model in which open waters existed in both low- and mid-latitude oceans,” said Song. “We found that the Marinoan glaciation was dynamic. There may have existed potential open-water conditions in the low and middle latitudes several times. In addition, these conditions in surface waters may have been more widespread and more sustainable than previously thought and may have allowed a rapid rebound of the biosphere after the Marinoan Snowball Earth.”



The study raises intriguing questions about other ice ages, particularly the second one during the Cryogenian Period that scientists also believe created near-total glaciation of the planet. Algeo speculates that multicellular organisms might have triggered these ice ages by removing carbon from the atmosphere, leading to carbon burial and the cooling of the Earth.&nbsp;



Today, humans are releasing carbon quickly in huge amounts, which is having a significant impact on global climate.



“One of the general take-home messages is how much the biosphere can influence the carbon cycle and climate,” Algeo said. “We know that carbon dioxide is one of the most important greenhouse gases. So we see how changes in the carbon cycle have an impact on the global climate.”



Paradoxically, the refuges of life in the open waters during the Marinoan Ice Age likely helped to warm the planet and end the ice age, as the algae in the water released carbon dioxide into the atmosphere over time, gradually thawing the glaciers.



The study was supported by grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the China Geological Survey. The findings suggest that life can persist under extreme conditions, and it is crucial to understand the impact of the biosphere on the Earth’s climate.



Other theories about ‘Snowball Earth’

A team of scientists from the <a href="https://www.izw-berlin.de/en/home.html">Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research</a> (Leibniz-IZW) conducted a 34-year study on the factors contributing to fatal collisions between vehicles and spotted hyenas in the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania.&nbsp;



Although driving is permitted in the protected area, many wild animals, including spotted hyenas, are killed by vehicles, leading to negative impacts on wildlife.



The study identified two main factors that significantly contribute to spotted hyenas being run over by vehicles. Firstly, the characteristics of the road, and secondly, the annual migration of the large ungulate herds in the Serengeti, which causes seasonal changes in the prey animals' localization.&nbsp;



The findings provide new insights into the ecological and individual factors that affect predators' risk of fatal collisions with vehicles. The study was published in the scientific journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.biocon.2023.109950">Biological Conservation</a>.



The researchers found a total of 104 spotted hyenas that had been run over between 1989 and 2023. Based on these cases, they investigated which spatial and temporal factors contribute to spotted hyenas being run over and killed by vehicles, as well as whether specific age groups, sexes, or social statuses are more vulnerable. Long-term studies of this nature are rare.



The Serengeti National Park has a network of roads that includes main gravel roads, which are used by tourist vehicles, park staff, trucks, supply vehicles, and national bus lines throughout the year.&nbsp;

This was likely due to the higher volume of traffic and faster speeds on main roads. The second factor was the seasonal migration of large herds of ungulates (such as wildebeest, zebra, and Thomson's gazelles), which are the primary prey of Serengeti spotted hyenas. The timing and location of fatal collisions varied with the migration of these herds.



These findings align with previous studies that demonstrate a higher risk of animal-vehicle collisions with increased animal mobility and distance traveled. Furthermore, the hyenas that were killed tended to be located near watercourses and human habitation areas, which may attract them due to the presence of human food waste.



“Contrary to expectations, the seasonal variation in the number of tourists in the region did not seem to play a role in the level of mortality,” says Marwan Naciri, who joined the Leibniz-IZW for this project and is the lead author of the publication.



The dataset utilized in this study is unique in that it includes information on individual hyenas that were hit by vehicles, allowing the researchers to consider various factors of their life history during analysis. Results indicate that adult females were the most frequent victims, likely due to their need to travel long distances between their den and prey herds, balancing hunting and nursing responsibilities.



“Injuries from illegally laid wire snares also particularly affect adult female hyenas, as we found in a previous study,” says Leibniz-IZW scientist Sarah Benhaiem, involved in both research projects. In summary, roadkills and death by snares could be one of the main causes of death for adult hyenas in the Serengeti. It is still unclear whether this mortality, which mainly affects adult females, threatens the continued existence of the local spotted hyena population.



In the Serengeti, road networks are expected to expand in the future, even within protected areas. Understanding the factors that contribute to fatal collisions between vehicles and wildlife, such as road features, can aid in the development of effective mitigation measures.&nbsp;

Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) are a key part of the planning process for new developments, but according to new research from the <a href="https://www.uea.ac.uk/">University of East Anglia</a>, they may be hugely underestimating the effect that these developments have on wildlife.&nbsp;



The study, published in the journal <a href="https://zslpublications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/14691795">Animal Conservation</a>, shows that these assessments often fail to take into account how birds and other animals move around between different sites, leading to a drastic underestimation of the number of animals impacted by new developments.



The research team has been studying Black-tailed Godwits across Europe for over 30 years and found that any species that moves around is likely to be under-represented by EIAs. The impact of a planned tidal barrage across the Wash estuary in the UK, for example, could be much worse than predicted for wild birds and England’s largest common seal colony.



“Environmental Impact Assessments are carried out when developments are planned for sites where wildlife is protected. But the methods used to produce these reports seldom consider how species move around between different sites. This can drastically underestimate the number of animals impacted, and this is particularly relevant for species that are very mobile, like birds,” said Professor Jenny Gill from UEA’s School of Biological Sciences.



The researchers conducted a case study of the Tagus Estuary in Portugal, where a new airport is planned. The Environmental Impact Assessment for the airport estimated that less than six percent of the Black-tailed Godwit population would be affected by the plans.&nbsp;



However, by tracking the movements of individual Godwits to and from the affected area, the researchers found that over 68 percent of the Godwits in the estuary would actually be exposed to disturbance from airplanes.



“Many of these Godwits spend the winter on the Tagus Estuary,” said Dr. José Alves, a researcher at the University of Aveiro and visiting academic at UEA’s School of Biological Sciences. “So we used local sightings of color-ringed birds to calculate how many of them use sites that are projected to be affected by airplanes. We were then able to predict the airport’s impact on future Godwit movements across the whole estuary."



The researchers have been studying individual Black-tailed Godwits for three decades by fitting them with uniquely identifiable combinations of colored leg-rings. With the help of a network of birdwatchers across Europe, they have recorded the whereabouts of individual Godwits throughout the birds’ lives.&nbsp;



The method used to calculate the footprint of environmental impact could be applied to assess many other proposed developments in the UK, particularly those affecting waterbirds and coastal habitats where tracking data is available.



“Eight environmental NGOs together with Client Earth have already taken the Portuguese government to court to contest the approval of this airport development. We hope our findings will help strengthen the case by showing the magnitude of the impacts, which substantially surpass those quantified in the developer’s Environmental Impact Assessment,” said Dr. Alves.



The research highlights the need for EIAs to consider the movement of wildlife between different sites to provide a more accurate assessment of the environmental impact of new developments. This could help prevent the underestimation of the number of animals impacted and ensure that the necessary steps are taken to protect wildlife and their habitats.

A recent study led by <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/">Imperial College London</a> (ICL) that examined 279 households in London during the alpha and pre-alpha <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/improving-air-quality-could-reduce-severe-cases-of-covid-19/">Covid-19</a> waves (August 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021) has provided the first empirical evidence for the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 via people’s hands and frequently touched surfaces in households, where most transmission of the coronavirus occurs. These findings support the use of frequent handwashing, regular surface disinfection, physical distancing, and mask wearing to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.&nbsp;



“There’s no doubt that if you have Covid-19 you’re emitting the virus into the air as micro-aerosols as well as large droplets that land on your hands and the surfaces around you. What hasn’t been shown, until now, is that the presence of the virus on people’s hands or household surfaces predicts transmission to contacts,” said senior author Ajit Lalvani, an expert in Infectious Diseases at ICL.



“Our real-life study in London households provides the first empirical evidence to show that the presence of SARS-CoV-2 on people’s hands and surfaces contributes significantly to spread of Covid-19. Since we didn’t systematically sample household air, we cannot rule out airborne transmission occurring in parallel.”



All contacts of the infected study participants were regularly tested for Covid-19 and the scientists took swabs from primary cases’ and contacts’ hands, as well as the most frequently touched surfaces in households, such as fridge doors, kettle handles, or kitchen taps, to examine the correlations between microbiological detection of the virus on the hands and surfaces and transmission to household contacts.



&nbsp;“In houses in which we found the virus on surfaces and the hands of participants, infection among contacts, and thus transmission, was significantly higher,” reported lead author Nieves Derqui, a PhD student in Epidemiology, Evolution, and Control of Infectious Diseases at ICL.



For instance, if the virus was detected on primary cases’ hands, contacts in their households were 1.7 times more likely to get infected than those in households where primary cases did not have the virus on their hands, and if the virus was detected on frequently touched surfaces, contacts were 3.8 times more likely to have detectable virus particles on their hands and 1.7 more likely to be infected.



“Our new understanding of the pathways of household transmission now enables us to prioritize simple measures to interrupt spread of the virus. Our data strongly suggest that as well as frequent handwashing, decontamination of frequently touched surfaces could prevent transmission,” Lalvani concluded.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanmic/home">The Lancet Microbe</a>.&nbsp;

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.



Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.



Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.



Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.

The star of this ancient forest is Archaeopteris – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.



William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.



Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.

The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified Eospermatopteris, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.



All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.



"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.



The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.



Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.

Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.



Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.

"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.
