A new executive order aimed at deregulating the U.S. seafood industry is raising red flags among scientists and policy experts. While the order claims to boost competitiveness and cut red tape, critics warn it could do more harm than good - weakening the very systems that protect seafood sustainability.



Scientists from <a href="https://www.ucsb.edu/">UC Santa Barbara</a> and the University of Washington outlined their concerns in a recent paper. They argue that the executive order misses the mark, prioritizing short-term gains over long-term stability.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-seafood-deregulation-order">Inside the seafood deregulation order</h2>



Signed in April 2025, the order - titled “Restoring American Seafood Competitiveness” - claims that U.S. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-seafood-industry-has-been-hit-hard-by-the-covid-19-pandemic/">seafood markets</a> are held back by overregulation and unfair trade practices. It calls for reducing regulatory burdens, eliminating unsafe imports, and strengthening the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seafood-spoilage-hidden-dangers-in-the-cold-chain/">seafood supply chain</a>.



However, the researchers say the plan is moving too fast and with too little support. They describe it as a policy that risks unraveling decades of scientific progress.



“(It’s) a significant escalation in undoing federal regulatory frameworks, weakening scientific authority and deemphasizing aquaculture development,” said Halley Froehlich of UC Santa Barbara and Jessica Gephart of the University of Washington.



“Instead of reform, it’s dismantling regulations in a very short amount of time,” added Froehlich, the paper’s lead author.&nbsp;&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-noaa-s-role-under-threat">NOAA’s role under threat</h2>



The scientists point to cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as a major concern. NOAA oversees roughly 500 commercial fishery stocks in the U.S. It plays a key role in managing, monitoring, and protecting marine resources.



Under the new directive, NOAA faces budget cuts, staff reductions, and tighter controls on communication. That’s a serious blow to its ability to coordinate sustainable fishing, especially across regions where fish migrate between countries.



“It’s quite problematic because NOAA is so central to how we manage our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bleaching-effect-coral-loss-threatens-fisheries-and-livelihoods/">fisheries</a>,” Froehlich said. “Data collection, monitoring, oversight, you name it, NOAA is part of that, and a really important part.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-plan-ignores-the-ocean-s-limits">The plan ignores the ocean’s limits</h2>



The executive order is supposed to help boost domestic seafood production. But the researchers argue that the ocean has limits - and we’re already close to reaching them.



“We are not going to get more out of the ocean,” Froehlich said. “We’re already near ‘peak fish,’ meaning maintenance and recovery of our stocks.”



Wild fisheries - both in the U.S. and globally - are already producing at or near their maximum sustainable levels. That leaves <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aquaculture-now-produces-more-food-than-wild-fishing/">aquaculture</a> as the only real path for growth. 



However, the new order gives little attention to farmed seafood and offers even less support to the agencies that regulate it. The scientists call it a mismatch between promises and practical outcomes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cutting-data-cutting-capacity">Cutting data, cutting capacity</h2>



One of the most troubling issues is the potential loss of data. The researchers warn that NOAA’s online databases, climate research, and monitoring tools may be defunded or decommissioned.



Without this data, managing fisheries becomes guesswork. It also makes it harder to prepare for climate-driven shifts in marine ecosystems.



“Without the data, expertise and capacity to study and understand these systems we run the risk of fishery collapses becoming more common and long-lasting,” the authors wrote.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-trade-conflicts-and-mismatched-markets">Trade conflicts and mismatched markets</h2>



The executive order also makes assumptions about seafood markets that don’t align with reality. 



Much of the seafood farmed in the U.S. isn’t what consumers demand most. And a large portion of seafood caught in U.S. waters is processed overseas before being sold back into the domestic market.



If tariffs are imposed on imported or foreign-processed seafood, prices for high-demand products like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shrimp-crisis-alarming-virus-threatens-global-seafood-supplies/">shrimp</a> could rise sharply. Right now, only about 10% of shrimp eaten in the U.S. comes from domestic sources.



“In disrupting the market dynamics we do have, especially with trade wars with our trading partners, it’s likely that we’re going to have the opposite effect of creating opportunity long-term,” Froehlich said.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-alternative-to-seafood-deregulation">An alternative to seafood deregulation </h2>



The paper was submitted as evidence in a recent hearing by the House Natural Resources Committee’s Water, Wildlife and Fisheries Subcommittee. The scientists hope their findings will influence how Congress approaches <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seafood-will-help-feed-earths-future-population-of-10-billion/">seafood policy</a> moving forward.



“When it comes to any shifts in production, these high levels of uncertainty are not a beneficial thing to happen for the sector,” Froehlich said.



While deregulation may sound appealing to some, the authors argue that a stable, well-regulated system - backed by science and data - is what actually keeps seafood both sustainable and competitive. In their view, cutting corners now could cost the industry far more in the future.

Human activities often have a detrimental impact on wild <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wasps-are-undervalued-as-predators-and-pollinators/">pollinators</a>, but a new study reveals that this is not always the case. The researchers have found that a native bee species in Fiji has been thriving since the very first land clearances by humans in the island nation. 

The experts report that the common bee, Homalictus fijiensis, has increased its spread on the main island Viti Levu alongside advancing land clearance and the introduction of new plants and weeds to the environment.

"Earlier research connected the relatively recent population expansion to warming climates, but our study reveals an interesting and positive response from an endemic species to human modifications to the landscape which commenced about 1000 BC," explained study lead James Dorey of <a href="https://www.flinders.edu.au/">Flinders University</a>.

"This species is a super-generalist pollinator (pollinates many plant species) and likes to nest in open, cleared ground, so one of the most important bee pollinators in Fiji actually appears to have benefited from human arrival and subsequent clearing of land in Fiji."

The researchers used phylogenetic analyses of DNA to examine changes in native bee populations in Fiji. They determined that bee populations have expanded enormously, beginning about 3,000 years ago. 

According to Dorey, there has been no corresponding change in bee population size on another major island, Kadavu, where human populations and agricultural activities have been historically very low.

"That is too recent to be explained by a warming climate since the last glacial maximum which ended about 18,000 thousand years ago," said study senior author Professor Michael Schwarz.

"Instead, we argue that the expansion of Fijian bee population better coincides with the early occupation of the Pacific islands by the somewhat-mysterious Lapita people, and this expansion accelerated with increasing presence of later Polynesians in Fiji who modified the landscape with their agricultural practices."

Professor Schwarz noted that high-resolution population genetic studies such as this are a good way to distinguish between older and "natural" events and those resulting from early human dispersal and colonization.

"A persistent question in studies of ecosystems over the last 60,000 years or so concerns the relative roles of climate change and human modifications of the environment. For example, there is a continuing debate about the extinction of megafauna in Australia - was it due to humans, climate change, or both?"

"Those kinds of questions can be addressed if there are very good fossil records, but what about ecosystems where fossil records are very poor."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/1365294x">Molecular Ecology</a>.

It may come as a surprise to learn that some spiders eat snakes, and a study from the <a href="https://www.unibas.ch/en.html">University of Basel</a> has now revealed that this unusual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-lionfish-have-arrived-in-the-south-atlantic/">predation</a> strategy can be found on every continent except Antarctica. The researchers analyzed over 300 reports of snake-eating spiders.

The study revealed that spiders from 11 different families are able to catch and eat snakes. "That so many different groups of spiders sometimes eat snakes is a completely novel finding," said study co-author Dr. Martin Nyffeler. 

Overall, 80 percent of the incidents studied were observed in the United States and Australia. By contrast, this feeding behavior has rarely been observed in Europe.

According to the researchers, snake-eating spiders have never been reported in Switzerland, and one possible explanation is that the native colubrids and vipers are too big and heavy - even when freshly hatched.

The researchers found that about half of the reported snake-eating spiders were black widows of the family Theridiidae. These spiders have powerful, paralyzing venom that targets vertebrate nervous systems. In addition, black widows build webs with extremely tough silk that allows them to capture larger prey.

The analysis also revealed that spiders can subdue snakes from seven different families, about 30 percent of which are venomous themselves.  

Furthermore, the observed spiders can outcompete snakes that are up to 30 times their size. The snakes caught by spiders ranged from six centimeters to one meter, with an average length of 26 centimeters. The experts report that most of the snakes caught were very young, freshly hatched animals. 

Many snake-eating spiders have venom that is also deadly to humans, attacking the nervous system in similar ways. Ultimately, observations of snake predation may provide new insight the mechanisms by which spider neurotoxins affect vertebrate nervous systems.

"While the effect of black widow venom on snake nervous systems is already well researched, this kind of knowledge is largely lacking for other groups of spiders," said Dr. Nyffeler.

"A great deal more research is therefore needed to find out what components of venoms that specifically target vertebrate nervous systems are responsible for allowing spiders to paralyze and kill much larger snakes with a venomous bite."

The study is published in the <a href="https://bioone.org/journals/the-journal-of-arachnology/scope-and-details">Journal of Arachnology</a>.

A mouse that was thought to have been extinct for 150 years in Australia has been found alive, thanks to a new genetic study. The experts report that Gould's mouse did, in fact, disappear from the mainland yet persists on islands in Western Australia.

In an effort to investigate the decline of native species since the arrival of Europeans in Australia, the researchers analyzed DNA samples from eight extinct Australian rodents and from more than 40 of their living relatives.

The study revealed that the Gould's mouse was indistinguishable from the Shark Bay mouse, which is still found on several small islands off the coast of Western Australia.

Study lead author Dr. Emily Roycroft is a postdoctoral researcher in the College of Science at <a href="https://www.anu.edu.au/">Australian National University</a> (ANU). She described the discovery as both exciting and sobering.

"The resurrection of this species brings good news in the face of the disproportionally high rate of native rodent extinction, making up 41 percent of Australian mammal extinction since European colonization in 1788," said Dr. Roycroft.

"It is exciting that Gould's mouse is still around, but its disappearance from the mainland highlights how quickly this species went from being distributed across most of Australia, to only surviving on offshore islands in Western Australia.It's a huge population collapse."

The seven other extinct native species that were sampled were found to have all had high genetic diversity immediately before they were wiped out. These levels of genetic diversity indicate that the rodents had large, widespread populations prior to the arrival of Europeans, said the researchers.

"This shows genetic diversity does not provide guaranteed insurance against extinction," said Dr.Roycroft. "The extinction of these species happened very quickly."

"They were likely common, with large populations prior to the arrival of Europeans. But the introduction of feral cats, foxes, and other invasive species, agricultural land clearing and new diseases have absolutely decimated native species."

"We still have a lot of biodiversity to lose here in Australia and we're not doing enough to protect it."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.pnas.org/">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>.

It’s long been hypothesized that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/songbirds-and-humans-use-similar-speech-patterns/">songbirds</a> might become dependent on bird feeders, causing an overall negative impact on their survival and well being. But now, a new study from <a href="https://oregonstate.edu/">Oregon State University</a> suggests that this may not be the case.  

"There's still much we don't know about how intentional feeding might induce changes in wild bird populations, but our study suggests that putting out <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cutting-food-waste-could-feed-the-world-but-not-nutritiously/">food</a> for small birds in winter will not lead to an increased dependence on human-provided food," said study co-author Jim Rivers.

"The extensive and widespread nature of people intentionally feeding wildlife can have unintended consequences for free-ranging animal populations, and those consequences are best documented in birds."Birds may not become dependent on bird feeders. 

"On the negative side, it can facilitate disease transmission, restructure local communities and alter migration behavior, for example. There's even evidence that it can lead to changes to birds' bill structure. On the other hand, it can also have positive effects, such as enhanced body condition, wintertime survival and reproductive output."

The OSU scientists used Black Capped Chickadees in the study, fitting them with radio frequency ID tags. Some of the birds had their flight feathers cut - either heavily cut or lightly - and a control group of birds had no feathers cut. 

The chickadees are a common feeder bird and were used in a previous study on feeder habits. They also have high energy requirements and typically eat only one seed per feeder visit, so they were a perfect model organism for the study. 

The intentional maiming of the birds was to increase the energy needed for flight for some individuals. The researchers looked at how often each group of birds visited the feeders to determine if those with higher energy needs visited the feeders more often. 

What the scientists discovered is that the birds with trimmed feathers didn’t visit the feeders more to make up for losses in energy. In fact, the birds actually visited the feeders less for a few weeks, possibly to avoid exposure to predators until their wings healed up. 

"Feather-clipped chickadees reducing their use of feeders relative to control birds suggests that foods in the environment - like seeds, berries and small invertebrates - were sufficiently available to compensate for increased flight costs and allowed them to cut back on feeder use," said Rivers. 

"It's clear that the chickadees in our study did not increase their visitation rates nor did they increase their reliance on supplemental feed during a period when they might have benefited from it the most."

A limitation of the study, which is published in the June 28 issue of the Journal of Avian Biology, is that it uses only one species as an example. There is still much we don’t know about feeding wildlife, even birds that are fed by millions all over the world.

Sexual competition among males important for maintaining genetically healthy populations. A new study from <a href="https://www.uu.se/en">Uppsala University</a> describes how sexual selection eliminates bad mutations, and helps to pass along genes to offspring that tend to increase their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eating-fast-bad-heart/">fitness</a>.

"When deleterious mutations are purged from a population through rigorous selection in males, resulting in fewer males reproducing, the process can take place with little or no effect on population growth."

"This is because relatively few males suffice to fertilize all the females in a population, hence, whether those females are fertilized by few males or many males makes little or no difference to the number of offspring those females can produce, especially in species where the male doesn't look after its own offspring," explained study lead author Karl Grieshop, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Toronto.

"By contrast, such rigorous selection in females would result in fewer females reproducing, hence fewer offspring produced, which could lead to a massive population decline or even extinction.'

The researchers analyzed 16 genetic strains of seed beetle to investigate how the number of deleterious mutations in each affected their reproductive ability. 

The experts quantified the cumulative effects of each strain's unique set of mutations through the intensive inbreeding of strains followed by crosses among them. This showed that the mutations harmed both females and males nearly equally. 

However, when the team looked at just the crosses among strains, which is the more more how selection would act in nature, the mutational effects only impacted male fitness. In the females, the deleterious effects of the mutations they carried were not detectable in this more genetically variable background.

"This indicates that although these mutations do have a detrimental effect on females' reproduction, they are more effectively removed from the population by selection acting on male carriers than female carriers," said Grieshop.

"Previous research from our group and others has succeeded in showing this effect by artificially inducing mutations, but this is the first direct evidence that it ensues for naturally occurring variants of genes."

According to the researchers, their study sheds new light on the old question of why so many multicellular organisms use sexual reproduction.

"Production of males causes a decrease in the reproductive capacity of a species, since males themselves contribute less than females to the production of offspring. The question, then, is why a species evolves to reproduce sexually, instead of just producing females through asexual reproduction," said study co-author David Berger.

"Our study shows that production of males, which may engage in intense competition for the chance to mate, enables faster purging of deleterious mutations from the population, which could thereby enable a healthier set of genes and higher reproductive capacity relative to asexual reproduction."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/20563744">Evolution Letters</a>.

Elephants have their very own personalities, just like humans. According to a new study from the <a href="http://www.uwyo.edu/">University of Wyoming</a>, individual personality traits play an important role in helping elephants solve problems.

"We took a comprehensive approach by using three different problem - solving tasks and three types of personality assessments to determine if individual personality played a role in which elephants were able to solve these tasks," explained study co-author Lisa Barrett. "Since we couldn't give the elephants a personality test like the ones you're familiar with online, we had to think creatively."

The study was focused on 15 Asian elephants and three African savanna elephants in zoos across the United States. In previous work, the researchers had demonstrated that Asian elephants can use water as a tool to solve a novel problem - and reach a food reward - in what is called the floating object task. 

For the current study, the experts used a different set of novel tasks, as well as personality tests, to analyze the elephants. In addition, the elephant caretakers answered questions about the personalities of the animals in their care.

Based on the surveys and observations, the team measured traits such as activeness, affection, aggression, defiance, excitability, mischievousness, shyness, and sociability.

"We were eager to see if the personality traits we uncovered through the surveys and observations predicted success on novel problem-solving tasks," said study lead author Sarah Benson-Amram. "The elephants had an opportunity to solve each task three times, and we measured if they learned to solve faster over time, and then we traced their success back to their personality type."

The researchers found that elephants were able to learn to solve two out of the three tasks faster over time, even though the elephants only received three trials on each task. 

While personality traits including aggressiveness and activity were important predictors of problem-solving overall, the traits measured did not significantly predict learning ability.

The experts say that further research is needed to establish personality assessments that could be used to determine which methods would be best for management of elephants.

"Research with free-ranging elephants can extend this study to determine which personality traits are most important for solving novel problems that elephants experience in the wild," said Barrett.

The study is published in the <a href="https://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/com">Journal of Comparative Psychology</a>.

Experts at the <a href="http://www.bristol.ac.uk/">University of Bristol</a> have made a breakthrough discovery that explains how the one-humped Arabian camel can survive for weeks without drinking. The research was focused on the response of the camel's kidneys to the stress of dehydration and rapid rehydration.

Camelus dromedarius is believed to have been domesticated 3,000 to 6,000 years ago in the Arabian Peninsula. Here, as well as in the arid and semi-arid regions of North and East Africa and Iran, the camel is the most important livestock animal. The camels serve a variety of purposes, ranging from milk and meat production to riding and sport.

According to the researchers, the one-humped camel is so incredibly well adapted to the desert environment that it can endure weeks without access to water. 

The camel's kidneys play a central role in conserving water by producing highly concentrated urine. For the current study, the researchers set out to identify the genes that activate this biological coping mechanism.

The team analyzed how thousands of genes changed in the camel kidney in response to dehydration and rehydration.  The results indicate that the amount of cholesterol in the kidney plays a role in water conservation. 

"A decrease in the amount of cholesterol in the membrane of kidney cells would facilitate the movement of solutes and water across different sections of the kidney - a process that is required to efficiently reabsorb water and produce a highly concentrated urine, thus avoiding water loss," explained the study authors. 

"This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first time that the level of cholesterol has been directly associated with water conservation in the kidney. Thus, we describe a novel role for this lipid that may be of interest when studying other species."

The experts are currently investigating how the camel brain responds to dehydration and how other species adapt to life in the desert. 

The research is particularly relevant today, as over one third of the world's land surface is threatened with desertification as a result of climate change and unsustainable land use. 

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/commsbio/">Communications Biology</a>.

A new study from the <a href="https://www.uaf.edu/">University of Alaska Fairbanks</a> reveals the discovery of a dinosaur nursery in the Arctic. The research solves a long-standing mystery of whether dinosaurs reproduced in the Arctic and lived there year-round.

It was once common to think of dinosaurs as swamp-dwelling, slow moving “cold-blooded” monster <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giant-lizards-were-thriving-during-the-age-of-dinosaurs/">lizards</a>. The more modern view is a bird-like, quick witted, social, dynamic animal that lived in a broad range of habitats. 

"It wasn't long ago that people were pretty shocked to find out that dinosaurs lived up in the Arctic 70 million years ago," said study lead author Dr. Pat Druckenmiller. 

"We now have unequivocal evidence they were nesting up there as well. This is the first time that anyone has ever demonstrated that dinosaurs could reproduce at these high latitudes."

An earlier hypothesis suggested that dinosaurs might have migrated from higher latitudes and laid their eggs in warmer climates. Now, with the discovery of a dinosaur nursery in the Arctic, it is clear this wasn’t the case. 

For more than ten years, Dr. Druckenmiller and Gregory Erikson, a biology professor from University of Florida, have conducted field work in Prince Creek formation of northern Alaska. The experts have discovered new dinosaur species, and excavated many more, but this new discovery solves one of the biggest mysteries about Arctic dinosaurs. 

The team found tiny bones from several dinosaurs that had not yet hatched or had just recently hatched. This makes it an open and shut case proving that dinosaurs did indeed nest in the Arctic. 

After careful field work, the pair of scientists joined other researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder to painstakingly sort through sediment and find the tiny boned dinosaurs hiding amid rubble. 

The hard work paid off and produced one more piece of evidence that dinosaurs were warm-blooded animals, able to survive much of the same range of environments as modern mammals. 

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home">Current Biology</a>.

There is a general rule for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-mammals-actually-benefit-from-human-disturbance/">mammal</a> vocalizations - the larger the animal’s vocal fold, the lower the vocalization’s fundamental frequency. Large vocal folds such as those found in Asian elephants set an upper limit to the fundamental frequency of sounds produced by them.

In keeping with this rule, many of the sounds Asian elephants produce are low frequency calls - trumpets and infrasonic rumbles below the threshold of human hearing. Researchers at the <a href="https://www.univie.ac.at/en/">University of Vienna</a> have been studying these vocalizations for decades.

Asian elephants - but not their African cousins - make a high pitched squeaking noise that cannot, if the rule holds, be produced by their large vocal folds. To investigate, the experts analyzed the squeak sounds in Asian elephants from Nepal. 

The research team used 48 microphones and a special camera that translates the location of sounds into colors, similar to a heat sensing camera. In this way, the precise location of each sound was visually mapped as it was created. 

The researchers discovered that the squeaking sound is created by the elephant’s mouth, not by the trunk as in trumpeting. 

"Our results strongly suggest that Asian elephants force air from the small oral cavity through the tensed lips, inducing self-sustained lip vibration. Besides human brass players, lip buzzing is not described elsewhere in the animal kingdom," wrote the study authors.

"Given the complexity of the proposed mechanism, the surprising absence of squeaking in most of the unrelated subjects and the indication for volitional control, we hypothesize that squeak production involves social learning."

The research supports other recent discoveries which show that elephants have the ability to learn and repeat novel sounds they hear. The study highlights the elephant’s vocal flexibility as well as their learning capacity. 

"Our study offers new insights into how vocal and cognitive flexibility enables mammals to overcome size-related limitations of laryngeal sound production," said the researchers.

"This flexibility enables Asian elephants to exploit a frequency range spanning seven octaves within their communicative system."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://bmcbiol.biomedcentral.com/">BMC Biology</a>.

Geckos and lizards can sever their tails as a self defense mechanism to distract <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/young-tyrannosaurs-displaced-medium-sized-predators/">predators</a>. In a new study from <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/">UC Riverside</a>, experts have discovered that geckos are still successful hunters even after they have lost their tails. 

Since the tail vertebrae are perforated, some lizards can drop their tails without injury or loss of blood. Despite the advantages of tail loss, however, this defensive strategy comes at a cost. 

"Other studies have documented the negative effects of tail loss on lizards' ability to run, jump, mate, and reproduce," said study lead author Marina Vollin. "However, few have examined their ability to capture food when they lose their tails, which is critical for regenerating the tail and for overall survival."

To investigate, Vollin collaborated with Professor Tim Higham to observe geckos - some with their tails intact and others who had lost their tails - while they were in the prowl.

The researchers found that geckos successfully captured crickets about 77 percent of the time regardless of whether or not they still had their tail. According to the experts, this level of accuracy was surprising in tailless geckos considering thar tails help stabilize their body positions during and after a strike.

At the same time, the geckos were much slower without tails, and their attack strikes were much more awkward, explained Vollin.

"It is very possible that geckos suffer a loss in feeding performance and success following autotomy in nature given the complexity of the habitat and more room for the prey to escape," said Professor Higham.

Going forward, the researchers plan to study whether geckos are able to fully regain their agility once their tails have regenerated, which can take up to a month.

"It's important to get a sense of how they operate in nature, where additional elements could affect whether they have more difficulty capturing prey," said Vollin.

While geckos and other lizards eat a variety of different insects, they also serve as a key source of food for birds, snakes, and other mammals.

"I've heard them referred to as 'nature's popcorn,' because other animals can eat a bunch of them at once, they're abundant, and easy to acquire," said Vollin. "They're a big part of the base of the food chain."

A new study from the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a> demonstrates that synchronous births among banded mongooses has supported the evolution of a fair <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plant-science-is-becoming-increasingly-critical-to-society/">society</a>.

Female banded mongoose groups give birth on the same night, creating a "veil of ignorance" as to which pups belong to which mothers. 

The team designed a study to investigate how the veil of ignorance over parentage may influence fairness in the distribution of postnatal care among the offspring.

"We test our model by creating inequalities among helpers and among offspring through the targeted provisioning of pregnant females, and then measuring whether mothers and helpers act to reduce or amplify these inequalities," wrote the researchers.

Half of the pregnant mothers in wild mongoose groups were regularly given extra food, which increased inequality in the birth weight of pups.

After they gave birth, however, the well-fed mothers provided extra care to the smaller pups, rather than to their own pups. As a result, the size differences among the pups were quickly eliminated.

"In most of the natural world, parents favor their own young. However, in banded mongooses, the evolution of remarkable birth synchrony has led to the unusual situation that mothers don't know which pups are their own, and therefore cannot choose to give them extra care," explained study lead author Dr. Harry Marshall of the University of Roehampton.

"Our study shows that this ignorance leads to a fairer allocation of resources - in effect, a fairer society."

The study was focused on seven groups of banded mongooses in Uganda. According to study co-author Professor Michael Cant, the experts predicted that a veil of ignorance would cause females to focus their care on the pups most in need, which is exactly what they observed.

"Those most able to help offer it to the most needy, and in doing so minimize the risk that their own offspring will face a disadvantage."

"This redistributive form of care 'levelled up' initial size disparities, and equalised the chances of pups surviving to adulthood."

"Our results suggest that the veil of ignorance, a classic philosophical idea to achieve fairness in human societies, also applies in this non-human society."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>.

Plants and animals are increasingly shifting their ranges northward toward cooler latitudes to cope with climate change and to escape rising temperatures. But in a new study led by the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a>, researchers have found that many migratory birds are moving plants in the wrong direction through seed dispersal.

The experts report that the majority of plants from European woodlands are dispersed by birds migrating to warmer latitudes in the south, while far fewer are dispersed by birds migrating north. 

The researchers say that this pattern of southward seed dispersal by migratory birds is counterproductive if plants are to adapt to climate change.

"Contemporary climate change is so fast that many plants require dispersal distances far beyond those that normally take place locally," said study lead author Juan Pedro González-Varo of the University of Cádiz.

"This is where migratory birds can play a major role, as they are capable of dispersing seeds over tens of kilometers."

"With this research, we wanted to know the potential of plant species to be dispersed by migratory birds towards future favorable areas."

The research, which was conducted by experts from 13 European institutions, was focused on birds that consume fruits and disperse the seeds. The team analyzed data on the fruiting period of plants and migratory patterns of birds to investigate whether most seeds are being dispersed in cooler or warmer latitudes.

The researchers examined 13 wooded sites, including a total of 949 interactions between 46 bird and 81 plant species.

The study revealed that only 35 percent of the plants from the woodland communities are dispersed by birds that migrate northward in the spring. By contrast, 86 percent of the plants are dispersed by birds migrating to warmer areas in autumn.

"Under climate change, species redistribute themselves to track suitable climate conditions," explained study co-author Dr. Benno Simmons. "As plants cannot move themselves, they require species like birds to disperse their seeds to new areas."

"We wanted to know how well migratory birds might be able to do this. We found that northward dispersal to cooler areas is done by only a small number of migratory bird species, some of which are under hunting pressure."

"Our study emphasises the importance of these species for helping European plant communities experiencing climate change."

According to the study, the birds with the greatest potential to disperse European plants to cooler latitudes are Palearctic species - which spend the winter in central and southern Europe or North Africa - such as robins, blackcaps, and blackbirds.

"Although these are common species, the potential for seed dispersal to the north lies with only a handful of species, some of them heavily hunted in the Mediterranean Basin, both legally and illegally," said González-Varo.

"We believe that our study adds value to these species, since they would be responsible for helping European plant communities respond to climate change."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/">Nature</a>.

Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently.

"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."

Satellites also reveal how widespread changes in vegetation impact waterways,&nbsp; the climate, air quality. Satellites communicate by using radio waves to send signals to the antennas on the Earth. Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Melt ponds on the Greenland Ice Sheet

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes a new map of Mars that is providing insight into the planet’s watery past. The map also reveals where future missions could safely land on Mars.&nbsp;



The map has been created over the last decade using observations of water-rich rocks and mineral deposits. The images were captured by ESA’s Mars Express and NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.



"A big surprise is the prevalence of these minerals, with the map revealing hundreds of thousands of water-affected locations in the oldest parts of the planet," says ESA. "The new data will help answer exciting questions about Mars’ climate history, whether water was globally persistent or confined to short, intense episodes, and whether the conditions were ever suitable for life."



"Specifically, the map shows the locations and abundances of aqueous minerals. These are from rocks that have been chemically altered by the action of water in the past, and have typically been transformed into clays and salts."



According to John Carter of the Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale (IAS), our collective understanding of Mars has been oversimplified. He explained that planetary scientists have tended to think that only a few types of clay minerals on Mars were created during its wet period, then as the water gradually dried up, salts were produced across the planet.



The new map shows that the composition of Mars is much more complicated than what we thought. For example, while many salts formed after Martian clays, there are some salts that are presumed to be older than some of the clays.&nbsp;



“The evolution from lots of water to no water is not as clear cut as we thought, the water didn’t just stop overnight. We see a huge diversity of geological contexts, so that no one process or simple timeline can explain the evolution of the mineralogy of Mars. That’s the first result of our study. The second is that if you exclude life processes on Earth, Mars exhibits a diversity of mineralogy in geological settings just as Earth does,” said Carter.

The experts found that the muscle metabolism of cavefish has been genetically reprogrammed over time. As a result, the animals have experienced major changes in their morphology and behavior. Despite these changes, however, the cavefish remain healthy and fit.



The research may provide new clues about the evolutionary consequences of prolonged physical inactivity in humans.&nbsp;



“It’s no surprise that people are moving less and less as technology has advanced,” said Rohner. “With cavefish, we have a unique system where we can study what might happen if people remained couch potatoes over very, very long periods of time.”
