Wildfires in the western U.S. have become a growing crisis. They’re lasting longer, burning hotter, and spreading into areas that rarely burned in the past. 



But another danger is rising, beyond heatwaves and droughts. Lightning - sudden, fierce, and incredibly powerful - is becoming one of the biggest wildfire risks.



In the coming decades, scientists warn that lightning will become an increasingly dominant spark for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-making-wildfire-smoke-more-deadly/">wildfires</a>, adding to the already mounting risks across the West.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lightning-is-fueling-more-wildfires">Lightning is fueling more wildfires</h2>



Wildfires need a few things to get going: dry fuel, hot temperatures, low humidity, and a spark. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lightning-is-changing-the-atmosphere-in-surprising-ways/">Lightning</a> is one of the most powerful natural igniters.



In the western U.S., lightning already causes more than two-thirds of the area burned by wildfires. And now, new research shows that number is going to rise sharply due to climate change. 



Warmer air holds more moisture, which means more unstable weather patterns. Those patterns, in turn, set the stage for more lightning.



A recent study has revealed that virtually all of the western U.S. - 98 percent of the region - will have more days with a greater likelihood of lightning-ignited wildfires starting as early as the 2030s. 



For regions already accustomed to such fires, such as Oregon, Idaho, and Montana, the risk is even greater. As early as 2060, those states may have as many as 12 additional lightning-filled days per summer.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-model-to-forecast-lightning">A model to forecast lightning</h2>



Traditional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-models-underestimate-sea-ice-melt-and-global-warming/">climate models</a> don’t really track lightning. That’s why a team of researchers led by Dmitri Kalashnikov built their own system to fill in the gaps.



“The first step was to project lightning,” said Kalashnikov, a research scientist at the <a href="https://www.ucmerced.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California Merced</a>. “The typical climate models don’t directly simulate lightning. It’s too small a process.”



The researchers applied machine learning to forecast where lightning would hit based on variables that we can quantify - such as temperature, humidity, and the level of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/moisture-in-the-atmosphere-causes-extreme-weather-to-last-longer/">moisture in the air</a>. 



The team merged those results with the Fire Weather Index (FWI), a mechanism that was developed back in 1968 to monitor how probable wildfire initiation and spread is from local weather.



The result is a forecast model tailored to the western U.S., designed to project conditions from 2030 to 2060 - decades earlier than most studies, which typically look only to the end of the century.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-lightning-in-the-northwest">More lightning in the Northwest</h2>



The northwestern states of Idaho, Oregon, and Montana are projected to experience the greatest growth in lightning days. But strangely, they may not experience the most rapid expansion in wildfires. 



Although lightning will grow, the conditions favoring fires (such as extreme heat or dryness) are not expected to worsen as quickly in the Northwest compared to other regions.



That doesn’t mean northwestern states are off the hook. Cloud-to-ground lightning, the kind that hits trees or grass directly, is still expected to rise significantly in those areas.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-less-lightning-greater-wildfire-risk">Less lightning, greater wildfire risk</h2>



In contrast, the Southwest - including Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, and New Mexico - won’t see as much of a jump in lightning strikes. But the fire risk will still climb. 



This is because even a small spark becomes a big threat when the land is extra dry, the heat is intense, and there’s little rain to cool things off.



The researchers found that these southern states are likely to experience the biggest increases in wildfires caused by lightning, despite the smaller bump in lightning activity. That’s because climate change is pushing up the number of fire-prone days overall.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dry-and-wet-lightning">Dry and wet lightning</h2>



Kalashnikov said the next steps could involve separating the kinds of lightning events. “You can’t help but wonder what the future will look like, especially if you dig in and you realize that there’s actually a lot that we don’t understand,” he said.



One key factor will be figuring out how to distinguish between "dry lightning" and "wet lightning." Dry lightning happens without much rain, making it a fire hazard. 



Wet lightning brings <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heavy-rainfall-poses-extreme-risks-in-the-western-us/">heavy rain</a>, which can reduce fire risk but increase flood danger. Understanding that difference could help emergency services respond more precisely to fire threats.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildfire-risks-are-rising-fast">Wildfire risks are rising fast</h2>



As climate patterns shift, the West isn’t just getting warmer and drier - it’s getting stormier in a dangerous way. Lightning is expected to spark more fires, and fires are expected to find more dry fuel waiting. It’s a feedback loop that could reshape fire seasons in the U.S.



This isn’t about something that might happen a hundred years from now. The changes are coming within the next few decades - some may already be happening. 



And for the people living in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/double-hazard-wildfire-zones-identified-in-the-american-west/">high-risk areas</a>, that means more heat, more smoke, and a greater need for preparation.

The experts considered various factors to rank Europe's greenest countries, such as renewable energy share, recycling rates, and carbon dioxide emissions.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-norway">Norway</h2>



Norway's top ranking as Europe’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/going-green-which-states-are-the-least-environmentally-friendly/">greenest</a> country is attributed to its impressive renewable energy share in 2022, despite high per capita carbon dioxide emissions and extensive farmland.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-austria">Austria</h2>



Austria secured the second spot, primarily due to its citizens' preference for public transport, significantly reducing car usage. Austria also stands out for its high recycling rate and commitment to the Paris Agreement, though it ranks sixth in carbon dioxide emissions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-finland">Finland</h2>



Finland ranks third, following the implementation of a new Climate Act on July 1, 2022. The Act sets ambitious emission reduction targets for 2030, 2040, and 2050, with a goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-iceland">Iceland</h2>



Iceland, in fourth place, boasts one of the lowest carbon dioxide emissions rates among the top ten European countries and the highest rate of renewable energy share.&nbsp;



Iceland aims for carbon neutrality before 2040 and a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, as outlined in its updated Climate Action Plan.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sweden">Sweden</h2>



Completing the top five greenest countries in Europe is Sweden, notable for its extensive woodland areas and the second-highest renewable energy usage. Sweden's goal is to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, with a minimum reduction of 85% from 1990 levels.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-northern-europe">Northern Europe</h2>



“It’s interesting to see how six of the countries in the top 10 are Northern European and how all Scandinavian countries figure in the top five. This is a testament to their commitment to the environmental cause more than anyone else in Europe, and this can be seen both in the data and in the practical regulations that they have put in place both at home and that they have pledged to help with internationally,” concluded William Bergmark, founder of Hemsol.

Estonia is considered a green country in several aspects, particularly in its progress towards sustainability and environmental conservation.



Germany is recognized for its commitment to renewable energy, particularly solar and wind power, and its leadership in environmental technology.



Luxembourg generally has high environmental standards, particularly in areas such as air and water quality, and waste management.



Switzerland has strong environmental policies and legislation, focusing on preserving its natural landscapes and promoting sustainability. The country is known for its efficient waste management and high recycling rates.



Slovenia is noted for its biodiversity, forest conservation, and sustainable tourism practices.

At Mesa Verde National Park in southern Colorado, a remarkable scene unfolds on a cliffside: a fuzzy bumblebee, Anthophora pueblo, diligently carves into the red sandstone, its powerful jaws creating a symphony of grinding sounds. 



This industrious insect, native to Colorado and a recent discovery, captivates Adrian Carper, an entomologist at the <a href="https://www.colorado.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Colorado Boulder</a> and the <a href="https://www.colorado.edu/cumuseum/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CU Museum of Natural History</a>. 



"This is just one example of how crazily diverse our native <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bee-evolution-occurred-tens-of-millions-of-years-earlier-than-previously-believed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bees</a> are," Carper marvels.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-colorado-s-bumblebee-pollinators-in-peril">Colorado's bumblebee pollinators in peril</h2>



Yet, Carper's latest comprehensive report on Colorado's native pollinators, co-authored with his team, paints a concerning picture. 



Their research reveals a stark decline in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-heat-threatens-solitary-bees-and-global-food-security/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollinator populations</a> over the past 35 years, with some species plummeting by more than half. 



Alarmingly, about 20% of Colorado's 24 native bumblebee species are on the brink of seeking federal protection under the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/laws-regulations/summary-endangered-species-act" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Endangered Species Act</a>. 



"That’s a huge alarm call, and that’s only for species we have good data for," Carper warns, suggesting the actual situation could be more dire.



The report, drawing on data from the <a href="https://www.rmbl.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory</a>, indicates a 61% decline in insect populations in high-elevation meadows, despite these areas being well-protected. 



This decline encompasses a range of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, beetles, flies, and even mosquitoes, many of which are under-researched.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bumblebees-agriculture-and-tourism">Bumblebees, agriculture and tourism</h2>



Colorado's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bees-synthesize-nutrients-to-nourish-their-gut-microbiota/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bees</a> and other native pollinators are not just a vital component of the ecosystem; they are integral to the state's agriculture and tourism. 



Carper highlights the unique relationship between these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bee-communication-is-hindered-by-human-activity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollinators</a> and local flora. 



For instance, the renowned Rocky Ford cantaloupes, native to southeastern Colorado, rely heavily on native squash bumblebees for pollination. 



These bees possess specialized hairs to handle the cantaloupe's large pollen grains, a feature honeybees lack, making them inefficient <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bumblebees-choose-immediate-rewards-over-energy-efficiency/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollinators</a> for these flowers. 



"Our native bees have co-evolved with our native plants. We recreate in our beautiful high alpine mountains, because they are covered in colorful wildflowers, which wouldn’t be there if they didn't have our native pollinators to help them reproduce," Carper explained.



"Additionally, those native plants are integral to our rangelands, supporting over $5 billion worth of livestock across the state," said Carper.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-threats-to-native-pollinators">Threats to native pollinators</h2>



The report identifies several threats to native <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-rusty-patched-bumblebee-a-very-important-pollinator-is-on-the-edge-of-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollinators</a>: habitat loss, pesticide use, climate change, and the introduction of non-native species like honeybees. 



The latter, despite their importance in agriculture, are not native to Colorado and have seen a surge in urban hive numbers. 



This increase raises concerns about competition for food with native species and the potential spread of diseases and parasites. 



"We need to better educate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-is-causing-honey-bee-colony-collapse-in-the-u-s/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">beekeepers</a> on subjects like disease management and swarm control to mitigate honeybees’ impacts on native pollinators," advises Carper.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protecting-colorado-s-bumblebees">Protecting Colorado's bumblebees</h2>



To combat these threats, the report suggests strategies such as creating and connecting habitat patches and reducing pesticide use. 



Carper also emphasizes the role individuals can play, advocating for the use of native plants in personal landscaping to support local <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bumblebees-have-an-incredible-sense-of-smell-to-find-their-way-home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollinators</a>.



In summary, while the Anthophora pueblo bumblebee showcases the unique biodiversity of Colorado's pollinators, the stark reality of their declining numbers calls for immediate action. 



Through a combination of research, education, and conservation efforts, there is hope for preserving these vital members of Colorado's ecosystem and economy.

In recent years, the world has witnessed a puzzling phenomenon: despite global warming, winters in regions like East Asia and North America are becoming colder. 



This has led to a series of <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/sprawling-winter-storm-over-the-united-states/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme weather events</a> that contradict general climate change predictions. 



Historically, Arctic warming and a weakened jet stream have been pointed to as culprits, yet climate models have struggled to confirm this theory conclusively.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-extreme-weather">Understanding extreme weather</h2>



The 2021 Texas power outage, triggered by a rare cold snap, underscores the urgent need for precise climate models. 



These models are vital for forecasting <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/winter-storm-triggers-deadly-flooding-in-brazil/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme weather</a> events and mitigating their socioeconomic impacts. 



Recognizing this, leaders in climate technology have set a critical objective: to predict climate trends for the upcoming decade.



A recent discovery by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (<a href="https://eng.kist.re.kr/eng/index.do" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">KIST</a>), in collaboration with Yonsei University. 



Senior researcher Mi-Kyung Sung from KIST's Sustainable Environment Research Center and professor Soon-Il An of <a href="https://www.yonsei.ac.kr/en_sc/research/lab_intro.jsp" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yonsei University's Center for Irreversible Climate Change</a> have identified the mid-latitude oceans as key players in generating abnormal weather patterns, particularly in East Asia and North America. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cold-winter-weather-and-climate-change-are-different">Cold winter weather and climate change are different</h2>



This finding is crucial for developing mid to long-term strategies to address <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/warmer-arctic-northeast-winter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">winter climate changes</a>.



Ocean currents, by transporting heat energy as well as suspended and dissolved matter, significantly influence the weather and climate of nearby regions. 



Areas with rapid temperature changes within a narrow latitude band, such as the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean and the Kuroshio Current's downstream region in the Pacific Ocean, are termed "ocean fronts." 



The KIST-Yonsei research team attributes the rise in <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/brutal-winter-storm-dumped-snow-and-ice-from-texas-to-maine/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme cold waves</a> to the excessive heat accumulation in these ocean fronts.



Their research reveals a striking correlation: from the early 2000s until now, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Observed-temperature-trends_winters-of-1995-96-2021-22_credit-KIST_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">unusual cold trend</a> in East Asia aligns with heat buildup near the Gulf Stream, and in North America, it corresponds with intensified heat near the Kuroshio Current. 



Essentially, these oceanic frontal regions act as thermostats, influencing the frequency of winter cold waves and abnormal high temperatures.



The accumulation of heat in these ocean fronts can span years to decades. During such periods, continental regions might experience a 'warming hiatus,' seemingly defying the global warming trend. In contrast, periods of ocean frontal cooling may lead to accelerated warming in these regions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-colder-winter-weather">The future of colder winter weather</h2>



This research suggests that the recent decadal cooling trend is a temporary fluctuation within the broader global climate system. 



It implies that as the accumulated heat in the ocean fronts dissipates, we can expect warmer winters to become more common.



Furthermore, climate model experiments, which varied the heat levels near ocean fronts, align with these observations. 



This consistency challenges the conventional sea ice theory and underscores the importance of accurately modeling ocean front variability in climate predictions for the next decade.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-variations-in-a-warming-world">Climate variations in a warming world</h2>



As global warming progresses and alters the ocean's structure, regional climate variations could undergo significant changes. 



Climate model experiments with increased greenhouse gases indicate that North America may face shorter and fewer warming hiatuses, whereas East Asia might experience more frequent alternations between warming hiatuses and acceleration. 



These continental differences are driven by the distinct responses of the Kuroshio Current and the Gulf Stream to global warming.



"Applying the effects of ocean fronts revealed in this research to global warming climate models can improve climate change forecasts for the near future," said Dr. Mi-Kyung Sung of KIST. 



"It will provide important references for long-term forecasts of winter energy demand and the construction of climate change response infrastructure to prevent climate disasters such as the 2021 Texas power outage," Sung concluded.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-better-climate-models-yield-better-forecasts">Better climate models yield better forecasts</h2>



In summary, this pioneering research spearheaded by KIST and Yonsei University offers a vital new perspective in understanding the complex interplay between global warming and regional climate patterns, particularly the phenomenon of colder winters amidst a warming planet.

This advancement is crucial for more accurate predictions of future climate trends, enabling societies to better prepare for and mitigate the impacts of climate change. 



As we face the increasing challenges of a dynamic climate, such insights become invaluable tools in our ongoing efforts to adapt to and navigate the complexities of Earth's ever-changing climate system.

The life cycle assessment spanned from raw material extraction to the aircraft's end of life, focusing on a functional unit of 1-hour flight time. 



This approach, fortified with data from the aircraft manufacturer, enabled a detailed exploration of each aircraft's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-airplane-contrail-clouds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environmental impact</a>.



Their investigation encompassed a broad spectrum of environmental categories, including global warming potential, mineral resource scarcity, particulate matter formation, acidification, and ground-level ozone formation. 



These factors, indicative of an aircraft's ecological footprint, were meticulously examined.

Arvidsson provides a crucial takeaway from the study. 



“The key take-home from this study is that small electric aircraft can have a notably lower <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-accelerate-jet-stream-winds-and-airplane-turbulence/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate impact</a> -- up to 60 percent less -- and other types of environmental impacts than equivalent fossil-fueled aircraft," he said. 



"However, there is a trade-off regarding mineral resource scarcity – about 50 percent more even in the most favorable scenario, mainly due to rare metals in the batteries of the electric aircraft.



The study also delves into the life cycle of electric aircraft, paralleling it with electric cars. Initially, the production of their batteries, requiring substantial energy and resources, presents a higher <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-has-caused-more-severe-turbulence-on-airplanes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environmental</a> burden. 



However, as the aircraft is utilized, its benefits, chiefly emission-free propulsion, become increasingly apparent. 



A 'break-even' point is reached after about 1,000 flight hours, beyond which the electric aircraft's climate impact becomes lower than its fossil fuel counterpart. This finding assumes optimal conditions, including the use of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/passenger-planes-fueled-hydrogen/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">green energy</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-better-battery-technology-needed">Better battery technology needed</h2>



Senior Researcher Anders Nordelöf, another author of the study, highlights the significance of battery longevity. 



“The lifetime of the lithium-ion batteries, however, would have to be about twice as long for the mineral resource scarcity to be about the same for the electric airplane and the fossil-fuel aircraft," Nordelöf explains. 



"Alternatively, have double the energy storage capacity such that only one of two packs are needed onboard for the same flight time," he said.



The study concludes with a forward-looking perspective on battery development, which is pivotal in reducing the life cycle impacts of electric aircraft. 



Post-study advancements have seen the aircraft model's battery life triple. New <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seaweed-based-battery-may-ultimately-replace-lithium/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">battery technologies</a>, like lithium-sulfur, are in the pipeline, potentially enhancing the electric aircraft's environmental performance further.



“There is a constant development of lithium-ion batteries that can improve the environmental performance of the electric aircraft and make it relatively even more preferable than the fossil-fueled one," Arvidsson says. 



There are also new <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-e-waste-millions-of-tons-discarded-in-the-us-each-year/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">battery technologies</a> that could be developed and be applicable to electric aircraft in a longer time perspective, such as lithium-sulfur batteries, although these are still in an early phase of technology development," he concludes.

This phenomenon, discovered in a pivotal global study spearheaded by the University of the Sunshine Coast (<a href="https://www.usc.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UniSC</a>), poses a significant threat to these ecosystems' ability to mitigate climate change by storing carbon.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tipping-point-climate-and-disturbance">Tipping point: Climate and disturbance</h2>



This research encompasses a remarkable scope, spanning 44 countries across five continents. The team's comprehensive analysis has pinpointed the forests most at risk, revealing a particular vulnerability in tropical, low-elevation forests. 



Notable examples include regions in East Africa, Vietnam, Colombia, and Australia's Wet Tropics, among numerous others worldwide.



Professor Andy Marshall, from UniSC's Forest Research Institute, emphasizes the study's discovery of a "tipping point" – a critical juncture where the dominance of lianas becomes pronounced. 



This point is reached when the mean annual temperature exceeds 27.8° Celsius, coupled with rainfall less than 1,614 mm, particularly in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forest-modeling-study-reveals-new-insights-into-carbon-sequestration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forests</a> already disturbed by human activities like logging and clearing.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-of-woody-vine-dominance">Implications of woody vine dominance</h2>



Lianas, by their very nature, choke trees and impede their growth as they climb towards the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forests-are-becoming-less-productive-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forest canopy</a>. 



"Woody vines are increasingly taking over the world's forests," said Marshall. "For the first time, we have a global assessment that confirms that forest disturbance and climatic factors are major drivers of liana dominance."



These findings are crucial for the restoration of the world's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/young-forests-are-unexpected-heroes-of-carbon-capture/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forests</a>. "They allow us to know where to concentrate our efforts for restoration and identify future areas of concern in a changing climate," explains Marshall.



He further highlights that environmental conditions fostering liana vines could out-compete trees and stall recovery in disturbed native forests globally.



Professor Marshall draws particular attention to Australia, where the coastal and low-elevation forests of north Queensland are most vulnerable. 



"In Australia, the coastal and low-elevation <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mixed-forests-with-many-tree-species-are-more-effective-at-carbon-storage/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forests</a> of north Queensland are the most vulnerable— adding to the ongoing threat of deforestation which, in Queensland, is already greater than any other developed country," he said.



"With warmer temperatures and ongoing disturbances from logging and clearing, those forests areas under threat from liana around the world are only going to increase."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-woody-vines-are-thriving-in-climate-change">Woody vines are thriving in climate change</h2>



Tracing back to his first rainforest expedition in East Africa in 1998, Professor Marshall recalls his intrigue with the vines blanketing the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/protected-forests-offset-a-years-worth-of-global-fossil-fuel-emissions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trees</a>. 



Since then, research has escalated in scale, predominantly with local or regional focuses, leading to this global study.



This research is grounded in an "unprecedented dataset" from 651 vegetation samples representing 26,538 lianas and 82,802 trees, from 556 unique locations worldwide, derived from 83 research publications. 



The collaborative effort involved 20 co-authors from diverse research institutions across continents including Australia, South Africa, the UK, Singapore, Panama, Brazil, the USA, and China.



The study reveals that lianas are better adapted to climate change conditions, such as warmer temperatures, lower rainfall, and disturbances like fire, logging, and clearing. 



Their dominance over trees hampers the latter's recovery from disturbances, a situation that can persist for decades.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-sink-dilemma">Carbon sink dilemma</h2>



Forests, alongside oceans and soil, are the world's largest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/boreal-and-temperate-forests-have-emerged-as-the-main-carbon-sinks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon sinks</a>. The encroachment of lianas not only contributes to forest loss and degradation but also exacerbates the threat to this vital carbon sink. 



The urgency now lies in developing sensitive, effective solutions to help trees recover from vine domination and to restore the global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tropical-forests-are-losing-their-carbon-storage-capacity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon sink</a>.



However, Professor Marshall cautions against the full-scale clearing of lianas. He underscores the role of lianas in forest ecosystems and biodiversity -- from boosting soil fertility and carbon cycling to benefiting other plants, animals, soils, and overall ecosystem function, in both intact and disturbed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tree-diversity-increases-carbon-storage-in-forest-soils/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forests</a>. 



"We certainly wouldn't want this work to lead to forest managers going and cutting out all these vines out of their forests," he said. "Liana plays its part in the forest ecosystem and biodiversity by boosting soil fertility and carbon cycling, and can benefit other plants, animals, soils and overall ecosystem function, in both intact and disturbed forests."



The challenge is to manage their growth, which, under human impact, has become excessively high and unnatural.



"It is just that human impact is so great in some areas, that they are growing in very high numbers, they are not growing in a natural way," Marshall concluded.

The concept of life's emergence in a "warm little pond," as postulated by Charles Darwin, has fascinated scientists for generations. An intriguing study from the <a href="https://www.washington.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Washington</a> reexamines this theory that life on Earth evolved in shallow soda lakes. 



Researchers have found that soda lakes, particularly a shallow one in western Canada, may provide the perfect conditions for the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-the-building-blocks-of-life-form/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birth of life</a>, a hypothesis that reimagines our understanding of life's origins on Earth about 4 billion years ago.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracing-life-s-molecular-origins">Tracing life's molecular origins</h2>



The journey to this discovery began with the acknowledgment that life's complex molecules can spontaneously form under specific conditions. 



This notion, dramatized in the popular film “Lessons in Chemistry,” is rooted in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miller%E2%80%93Urey_experiment" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">real-life breakthroughs</a> of the 1950s and beyond. 



These advancements revealed the spontaneous formation of amino acids and, later, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lifes-building-blocks-may-have-formed-near-newborn-stars-and-planets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">building blocks</a> of RNA. However, a significant hurdle, known as the “phosphate problem,” stood in the way. 



The emergence of life requires high phosphate concentrations, far exceeding those found in natural water bodies like rivers, lakes, or oceans.



“I think these soda lakes provide an answer to the phosphate problem,” said senior author <a href="https://environment.uw.edu/faculty/david-catling/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">David Catling</a>, a UW professor of Earth and space sciences. 



“Our answer is hopeful: This environment should occur on the early Earth, and probably on other planets, because it's just a natural outcome of the way that planetary surfaces are made and how water chemistry works," Catling explained.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-soda-lakes-are-unique">Why soda lakes are unique</h2>



These lakes are unique due to their high levels of dissolved sodium and carbonate, akin to baking soda, resulting from interactions between water and volcanic rocks. 



Moreover, they can contain elevated phosphate levels, potentially solving the puzzle of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/building-blocks-of-life-found-in-asteroids-were-formed-in-cold-regions-of-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">life's emergence</a>.



In 2019, University of Washington researchers had <a href="https://www.washington.edu/news/2019/12/30/life-lakes-high-phosphorus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">theorized</a> that soda lakes could naturally concentrate phosphate to levels a million times higher than typical waters. 



Their latest study aimed to confirm this in a real-world setting, leading them to Last Chance Lake in British Columbia, Canada. 



This shallow, murky lake, situated on federal land, rests above volcanic rock and experiences conditions ideal for a soda lake: low water levels and high compound concentration due to evaporation.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cradles-of-life-on-earth-and-other-planets">Cradles of life on Earth and other planets</h2>



The team's analysis, as published in their recent paper, suggests that soda lakes could indeed be cradles for the emergence of life on Earth and potentially on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/building-blocks-of-life-found-in-a-galaxy-12-billion-light-years-away/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">other planets</a>. 



“We studied a natural environment that should be common throughout the solar system. Volcanic rocks are prevalent on the surfaces of planets, so this same water chemistry could have occurred not just on early Earth, but also on early Mars and early Venus, if liquid water was present,” said lead author <a href="https://ess.uw.edu/people/sebastian-haas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sebastian Haas</a>, a UW postdoctoral researcher in Earth and space sciences.



Volcanic rock prevalence on planetary surfaces suggests that similar chemical processes could have occurred on early Mars and Venus, given the presence of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stunning-discovery-earths-building-blocks-contained-water/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">liquid water</a>.



The research team visited <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/aDDRiCqjTGBWbhPx7" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Last Chance Lake</a> three times in 2021-2022, collecting samples of water, lake sediment, and salt crust to understand its unique chemistry. 



In most lakes, phosphate binds with calcium to form insoluble calcium phosphate. However, in Last Chance Lake, calcium combines with carbonate and magnesium to form dolomite, leaving phosphate in high concentration in the water.



“You have this seemingly dry salt flat, but there are nooks and crannies. And between the salt and the sediment there are little pockets of water that are really high in dissolved phosphate,” Haas said. 



“What we wanted to understand was why and when could this happen on the ancient Earth, in order to provide a cradle for the origin of life.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-tale-of-two-soda-lakes">A tale of two soda lakes</h2>



Interestingly, the study also compared Last Chance Lake with nearby Goodenough Lake to understand why life hadn't consumed the high phosphate levels in Last Chance Lake. 



The findings revealed that the saltiness of Last Chance Lake inhibited lifeforms that fix nitrogen, unlike in Goodenough Lake, which supports life that consumes phosphate. 



“This study adds to growing evidence that evaporative soda lakes are environments meeting the requirements for origin-of-life chemistry by accumulating key ingredients at high concentrations,” Catling said.



This characteristic makes Last Chance Lake a more accurate representation of a lifeless early Earth environment.



Professor Catling emphasizes the broader implications of this research for understanding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bouncing-comets-could-deliver-lifes-building-blocks-to-exoplanets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">life's origins</a>.



“These new findings will help inform origin-of-life researchers who are either replicating these reactions in the lab or are looking for potentially habitable environments on other planets,” Catling concluded.

This decision reflects the ongoing ominous trends that threaten global catastrophe, and emphasizes the urgency of addressing major global threats.



The experts indicate that the decision to maintain the Doomsday Clock's position is not due to a stabilization of global threats but rather to the continued presence of significant dangers. 



The unchanged setting at 90 seconds to midnight, the closest ever in history, underscores the critical nature of the current global situation.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-symbol-of-global-peril">A symbol of global peril</h2>



The Doomsday Clock, first set in 1947, is a metaphorical design that highlights the proximity of humanity to self-destruction due to dangerous technologies of our own making.&nbsp;



Initially, the focus was on the nuclear threat during the post-World War II era, especially the potential nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union. In 2007, the Bulletin expanded its scope to include catastrophic disruptions from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/indisputable-evidence-of-human-caused-climate-change/">climate change</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urgent-call-for-action">Urgent call for action</h2>



Rachel Bronson, the Bulletin's president and CEO, articulated the urgency of the situation. She stressed that the unchanged time on the Doomsday Clock does not imply stability but a pressing need for action from governments and communities worldwide.&nbsp;



"Conflict hotspots around the world carry the threat of nuclear escalation, climate change is already causing death and destruction, and disruptive technologies like AI and biological research advance faster than their safeguards," said Bronson.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-historical-context-nbsp">Historical context&nbsp;</h2>



The Doomsday Clock was conceptualized by scientists involved in the Manhattan Project, which developed the first nuclear weapons during World War II. Artist Martyl Langsdorf, tasked with creating a design for the Bulletin's June 1947 magazine cover, was inspired by the urgency and responsibility felt by these scientists.&nbsp;



Initially considering the symbol for uranium, Langsdorf eventually chose a clock to convey the critical time pressure to control atomic weapons.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ominous-trends-nbsp">Ominous trends&nbsp;</h2>



"Ominous trends continue to point the world toward global catastrophe. The war in Ukraine and the widespread and growing reliance on nuclear weapons increase the risk of nuclear escalation. China, Russia, and the United States are all spending huge sums to expand or modernize their nuclear arsenals, adding to the ever-present danger of nuclear war through mistake or miscalculation," the experts wrote in their <a href="https://thebulletin.org/doomsday-clock/current-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2024 statement</a>.



"In 2023, Earth experienced its hottest year on record, and massive floods, wildfires, and other climate-related disasters affected millions of people around the world. Meanwhile, rapid and worrisome developments in the life sciences and other disruptive technologies accelerated, while governments made only feeble efforts to control them."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deteriorating-state-of-the-world">Deteriorating state of the world</h2>



"The members of the <a href="https://thebulletin.org/about-us/science-and-security-board/">Science and Security Board</a> have been deeply worried about the deteriorating state of the world. That is why we set the Doomsday Clock at two minutes to midnight in 2019 and at 100 seconds to midnight in 2022."



"Last year, we expressed our heightened concern by moving the Clock to 90 seconds to midnight - the closest to global catastrophe it has ever been - in large part because of Russian threats to use nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine."

Led by Dr. André Taylor, professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, the research aims for both effective water desalination and sustainable energy storage.&nbsp;

"Although water is abundant on Earth, global statistics estimate that up to 66% of the world’s population suffers from water insecurity," wrote the study authors. "Worse, the challenge of securing adequate drinkable water is expected to worsen due to the combined effects of climate change and population growth."&nbsp;



"In regions lacking access to suitable water sources, seawater desalination plays a crucial role in providing potable water."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dual-benefits-nbsp">Dual benefits&nbsp;</h2>



The researchers documented a 20% increase in the RFD system's salt removal rate and a reduction in energy demand.  



"By seamlessly integrating energy storage and desalination, our vision is to create a sustainable and efficient solution that not only meets the growing demand for freshwater but also champions environmental conservation and renewable energy integration.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-storing-excess-energy-nbsp">Storing excess energy&nbsp;</h2>



RFD's inherent versatility lies in its ability to store excess energy from intermittent renewable sources, like solar and wind, and release it during peak demand. This aligns well with the fluctuating energy requirements of desalination processes, making RFD an eco-friendly alternative to traditional desalination methods.&nbsp;



“The success of this project is attributed to the ingenuity and perseverance of Stephen Akwei Maclean, the paper’s first author and a NYU Tandon PhD candidate in chemical and biomolecular engineering,” said Dr. Taylor. “He demonstrated exceptional skill by designing the system architecture using advanced 3D printing technology available at the NYU Maker Space.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-technology-works">How the technology works</h2>



The redox flow desalination system works by dividing incoming seawater into two streams, the salinating and the desalinating streams. Alongside these, two additional channels contain the electrolyte and redox molecule. The system uses a cation exchange membrane (CEM) or an anion exchange membrane (AEM) for effective separation.&nbsp;



In this setup, ions and electrons move through the channels, resulting in a freshwater stream and a concentrated brine stream. "We can control the incoming seawater residence time to produce drinkable water by operating the system in a single pass or batch mode," said Maclean.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sustainable-energy-nbsp">Sustainable energy&nbsp;</h2>



Moreover, the RFD system can function in reverse, converting the stored chemical energy back into renewable electricity. This unique feature enables RFD systems to act as a kind of "battery," capturing and releasing energy as needed, thus contributing to a more sustainable energy landscape.



While the technology is promising, further research is needed to refine the redox flow desalination process, making it more cost-effective. However, the NYU Tandon team's findings mark a critical step forward in the quest for efficient desalination methods, especially as climate change and population growth exacerbate water scarcity.



The success of this project aligns with the mission of DC-MUSE, which focuses on reducing the environmental impact of chemical processes through renewable energy.&nbsp;

The Met Office in Britain, in its recent announcement, has raised significant concerns about 2024 and the escalating levels of CO2 in the atmosphere.



The forecast predicts that in 2024, the increase in carbon dioxide levels will surpass critical trajectories, crucial for limiting global warming to 1.5°C.



The assertion from researchers is stark: only "drastic" reductions in emissions can retain this target within achievable bounds.



 “This year’s estimated rise in atmospheric carbon-dioxide concentration is well above all three 1.5°C-compatible scenarios highlighted in the <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/">IPCC report</a>," said <a href="https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/people/richard-betts" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Professor Richard Betts</a>, the Met Office author of the CO2 forecast.



"Even when we compensate for the temporary effects of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-mountains-impact-el-nino-winters-and-snowfall-amounts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">El Niño</a>, we find that human-induced emissions would still cause the CO2 rise in 2024 to be on the absolute limits of compliance with the 1.5°C pathways," Betts added.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-paris-agreement-s-goal-is-slipping-away">The Paris Agreement's goal is slipping away</h2>



A key driver of this anticipated rise is the dual impact of escalating emissions from fossil fuels and deforestation. 



Compounding this effect in 2024 is the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forecasters-warn-of-weather-chaos-as-el-nino-arrives-early/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">El Niño</a> weather pattern, known to diminish the carbon-absorbing capacity of tropical forests. 



Consequently, the <a href="https://gml.noaa.gov/obop/mlo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mauna Loa Observatory</a> in Hawaii anticipates a "relatively large" surge in annual average CO2 concentrations, estimating an increase of approximately 2.84 parts per million (ppm) from the previous year.



This increase is likely to steer the world away from the main pathways outlined by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (<a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IPCC</a>) for maintaining global warming within 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. 



This goal, set by the 2015 Paris Agreement, is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve. 



“The atmospheric CO2 rise has accelerated over the last six decades. If global warming is to stay below 1.5°C, the rate of build-up of CO2 in the atmosphere would need to slow substantially in the coming years, and halt altogether before mid-century. The forecast for 2024 CO2 levels does not show such a slowing," Betts explained further.



He further noted that while technically possible, meeting this target requires immediate and significant emission reductions, a scenario not currently reflected in the IPCC's projections.



The impending risk is clear: the world is inching closer to witnessing individual years where warming exceeds 1.5°C. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surge-in-2024-atmospheric-co2-levels">Surge in 2024 atmospheric CO2 levels</h2>



Although such instances would not constitute a direct breach of the Paris Agreement, which averages these figures over two decades, they are a stark reminder of the escalating climate crisis. 



The IPCC has already warned that, should emissions continue unabated, the 1.5°C threshold could be surpassed in the early 2030s. 



"We're not seeing any signs of avoiding that in terms of the buildup of CO2 in the atmosphere," Betts added.



The <a href="https://wmo.int/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">World Meteorological Organization</a> confirmed last week that 2023 was the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/record-heat-of-2023-likely-exceeds-that-of-the-last-100000-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">warmest year on record</a>, with an average global temperature of 1.45C above pre-industrial levels. 



The emerging El Niño climate pattern, which began in mid-2023, is expected to further exacerbate this trend. 



El Niño typically results in hotter, drier conditions in tropical forests and peatlands, impairing their ability to sequester carbon. 



Normally, ecosystems and ocean absorption offset about half of humanity's emissions, but El Niño's presence weakens this natural mitigation.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urgent-emissions-reductions-required">Urgent emissions reductions required</h2>



Regions like the Amazon, already grappling with severe drought, heat, and fires, are of particular concern. 



To maintain the 1.5°C limit, UN experts have estimated that emissions need to be cut nearly in half this decade. However, carbon pollution continues to rise.



Monitoring at Mauna Loa, ongoing since 1958, reveals a <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/annual-CO2-concentration-change_graph_Met-Office_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">consistently upward trend in CO2 levels</a>. 



To forecast this year's concentrations, the Met Office utilized emissions data alongside observations and predictions of ocean surface temperatures in the equatorial east Pacific, an El Niño indicator. 



Betts emphasized that even without El Niño's impact, the projected CO2 accumulation would be at the "very, very upper limit of consistency" with the IPCC's 1.5°C scenarios.



In summary, these findings underscore the urgency for "urgent emissions cuts," as emphasized by Betts. While multiple pathways exist to maintain the 1.5°C limit, all require immediate and significant action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 



The current situation highlights a critical juncture in the fight against climate change, where decisive and collective action is paramount.

Air conditioning systems can significantly reduce the risk of harm from wildfire smoke, according to a new study led by the <a href="https://www.uts.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Technology Sydney</a> (UTS).&nbsp;



The researchers found that air conditioning units trap particles from wildfire smoke and reduce our exposure to potentially harmful elements like soluble mercury, sulfate, and nitrate. This revelation adds a new dimension to the understanding of air conditioning beyond its primary function of cooling spaces.



Wildfire smoke, as highlighted by the UTS study, is not just an environmental concern but a significant health hazard. It can exacerbate conditions like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and heart disease, leading to increased hospitalizations and even fatalities.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-increasing-wildfires">Increasing wildfires</h2>



The study’s insights are particularly relevant in the wake of increasing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/canadian-wildfires-of-2023-were-a-global-environmental-setback/">wildfires</a> globally, which have been a source of major air pollution.



“The wildfires that raged across Australia during the 2019–2020 ‘Black Summer’ produced an enormous amount of air pollution, with plumes of smoke traveling long distances and cloaking Sydney and surrounding areas,” said study lead author and PhD candidate Raissa Gill.



“We wanted to find out more about what was in the wildfire smoke we were breathing. By using commercial air conditioning filters, we were able to capture and analyze the chemical composition of particles that would otherwise have been inhaled."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study">Focus of the study</h2>



The team used commercial air conditioning filters to collect and analyze the chemical composition of airborne particles during the wildfires. Filters from UTS Buildings 4 and 7 served as the primary source for sample collection.&nbsp;



The results showed that particulate matter concentrations were 2–3 times higher than normal, with spikes reaching 10.5 times the usual maximum. These levels exceeded national standards on 19% of the days across the four-month sampling period.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildfire-aerosols-nbsp">Wildfire aerosols&nbsp;</h2>



Study co-author Professor Martina Doblin noted significant differences in the physical and chemical properties of wildfire aerosols compared to typical urban aerosols.&nbsp;



“Wildfire aerosols contained much smaller, rounder particles than urban aerosols, making them more likely to be inhaled into our lungs and to transfer toxic elements into our blood stream,” said Professor Doblin. 



“These particles also contained more soluble forms of mercury, as well as higher concentrations of sulfate, nitrate and fluoride ions and metals including manganese, cobalt, and antimony. Mercury is quite toxic even in low concentrations and can cause neurological problems and lung damage.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications">Broader implications</h2>



The study not only highlights the immediate risks posed by wildfire smoke but also emphasizes the long-term environmental and health impacts.&nbsp;



“While air quality in Sydney is usually good by world standards, recent evidence has clearly shown that the handful of days that we get every year with high pollution loads from wildfires and dust storms lead to significant disease and death in the community," said study co-author Professor Fraser Torpy. 



"Studies that build an understanding of these high pollution events are critical in helping us determine what is causing these health crises, and will lead towards a better understanding of how we can protect the vulnerable members of the community that suffer from them."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hvac-systems">HVAC systems</h2>



Interestingly, the researchers found that HVAC systems, though not specifically designed for wildfire smoke, played a significant role in reducing indoor exposure to toxic particles. This was evidenced by the lower concentrations of fine particulate matter indoors compared to outdoors during the Canberra wildfires in 2019-2020.&nbsp;



The study suggests that considering higher-rated HVAC filters during fire seasons, and their regular maintenance and replacement, could be vital in reducing exposure to toxic particles.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-and-future-directions">Challenges and future directions</h2>



Despite these findings, Gill pointed out that many Australian homes and older buildings, which rely on natural ventilation or have inefficient HVAC systems, remain vulnerable to wildfire smoke.&nbsp;



“Australians face significant obstacles in achieving satisfactory air quality during major wildfire events. Many homes and older buildings rely on natural ventilation or have poor HVAC filtration efficiency and gaps that allow smoke to enter. These systems can also be costly and complicated to manage for effective protection during wildfires,” said Gill.



“Given that severe wildfires are projected to increase with climate change, the role of wildfire-ready infrastructure in maintaining public health, as well as the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, is now more pressing than ever."



The study is published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.envpol.2024.123306" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Environmental Pollution</a>.

This revelation raises new questions about the future of these regions in the face of climate change.



Recent research spearheaded by the U.S. National Science Foundation's National Center for Atmospheric Research (<a href="https://new.nsf.gov/funding/opportunities/national-center-atmospheric-research-ncar" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NSF NCAR</a>) has revealed a puzzling anomaly in our understanding of climate science. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dry-regions-are-getting-dryer-instead-of-wetter">Dry regions are getting dryer instead of wetter</h2>



The study's results are alarming, as they suggest that dry and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-is-frozen-ground-responding-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">semi-arid regions</a> could be more vulnerable to wildfires and extreme heat than previously projected.



“The impacts could be potentially severe,” said NSF NCAR scientist Isla Simpson, lead author of the study. “This is a global problem, and it’s something that is completely unexpected given our climate model results.”



The study, a collaborative effort involving scientists from various esteemed institutions, including <a href="https://www.ucla.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCLA</a>, <a href="https://www.ucsb.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCSB</a>, <a href="https://www.cornell.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cornell University</a>, <a href="https://polarbearsinternational.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Polar Bears International</a>, and <a href="https://www.columbia.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Columbia University</a>, delved into decades of atmospheric data. 



From 1980 to 2020, the team analyzed data from weather stations, weather balloons, and satellites, expecting to find an increase in atmospheric water vapor in line with climate models. However, the results were contrary to expectations.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clausius-clapeyron-relationship-challenged">Clausius-Clapeyron relationship challenged</h2>



The Clausius-Clapeyron relationship has been a fundamental principle in climate science, suggesting that with every 1°C rise in temperature, atmospheric moisture should increase by about 7%. 



Surprisingly, the research found that over dry and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/restoration-of-drylands-essential-for-survival/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">semi-arid regions</a>, moisture levels have remained constant or even declined, as observed in the Southwestern United States.



“This is contrary to all climate model simulations in which it rises at a rate close to theoretical expectations, even over dry regions,” the authors wrote in the new paper. 



“Given close links between water vapor and wildfire, ecosystem functioning, and temperature extremes, this issue must be resolved in order to provide credible climate projections for dry and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drier-savannas-store-more-soil-carbon-than-previously-realized/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">semi-arid regions</a> of the world.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dry-regions-will-face-greater-challenges">Dry regions will face greater challenges</h2>



This discrepancy poses a significant challenge to climate models, which have consistently projected rising atmospheric moisture even over dry regions. 



Simpson, who first noticed this trend while working on a <a href="https://www.noaa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NOAA</a> report about climate change in the southwestern U.S., emphasizes the urgency of resolving this issue to provide credible climate projections.



“We could be facing even higher risks than what’s been projected for dry and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-reveals-the-driving-forces-behind-greening-in-the-sahara-desert/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">semi-arid regions</a> like the Southwest, which has already been affected by unprecedented water shortages and extreme wildfire seasons,” Simpson said.



Interestingly, the study found that humid regions exhibit a different pattern. Here, water vapor increased during wetter months as expected, but the increase was not as pronounced during the driest months. 



This pattern contrasts sharply with the arid and semi-arid regions, further complicating the overall understanding of atmospheric moisture dynamics.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exploring-possible-explanations">Exploring possible explanations</h2>



The researchers propose several theories to explain these unexpected findings. One possibility is that the transfer of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-amazon-is-the-main-source-of-rain-in-the-atacama-desert/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moisture</a> from the Earth's surface to the atmosphere is not occurring as the models suggest. 



Another theory is that atmospheric circulation patterns may be moving moisture in unexpected ways. Additionally, the land surface itself might be retaining more moisture than anticipated, affecting its availability to the atmosphere.



Despite considering errors in observational data, the team found the discrepancy too consistent across different regions and time frames to be attributed to measurement errors.



Simpson emphasized the urgent need for more research to determine the cause.



“It is a really tricky problem to solve, because we don't have global observations of all the processes that matter to tell us about how water is being transferred from the land surface to the atmosphere," she said.&nbsp; 



"But we absolutely need to figure out what's going wrong because the situation is not what we expected and could have very serious implications for the future.”



In summary, this study opens a new chapter in climate science, challenging existing models and highlighting the complexity of Earth's climate system.

Their study illuminates a previously unnoticed amplifying effect within the ocean's food chain. They found that a 16-26% decrease in plankton, as predicted in areas like the North Atlantic, could result in a staggering 38-55% drop in the ocean's capacity to support fish.



This phenomenon is largely attributed to the decline in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-plankton-hold-a-long-record-of-ocean-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">phytoplankton</a> in various latitudes, a result of warmer waters and nutrient insulation from deeper layers. 



Interestingly, while the North Atlantic has seen a decline in plankton over the past 50 years, the impact on fish populations remains uncertain, with models showing varied projections.

Departing from traditional global-scale computer models, the team adopted a unique, data-driven approach. 



By examining the size structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plankton-super-swimmers-fueled-the-red-tide-event-of-2020/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plankton</a> and compiling a comprehensive global database, they could better understand how energy is transferred from microscopic phytoplankton to larger fish species.



Contrary to common beliefs, the study reveals that temperature plays a secondary role in disrupting food webs. 



The primary factor is the abundance of <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/spirals-plankton-indian-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">phytoplankton</a>, which dictates energy transfer efficiency. 



"Our global analysis sheds light on a hidden vulnerability," says Dr Atkinson. "We were surprised to find temperature didn't directly affect food web efficiency. Instead, we see ecosystems adapting to warming by changing plankton size." 



Warmer oceans reduce the nutrient supply from deeper waters, leading to smaller <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/spiral-plankton-off-australian-coast/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">phytoplankton</a> and less efficient energy flow.



Atkinson continued, "This suggests the main threat comes from reduced nutrient supply, leading to smaller plankton, longer food chains, and inefficient foraging."

While this finding may seem counterintuitive, Dr. Rossberg explains the broader context, saying, "Close to shore or in lakes, excess nutrients from land can cause imbalances like harmful algal blooms." 



"But at the vast scales relevant to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-biodiversity-could-shift-rapidly-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a>, it's the lack of nutrients from deeper waters that becomes the major bottleneck," Dr. Rossberg expounded.

Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.

According to ESA, Lesotho is the only nation in the world that lies completely above 1,000 m in elevation. The country is famous for its tall mountains and narrow valleys, and is known as Africa's "Kingdom in the Sky."



Out of a population of around two million people, about 80 percent live in rural areas. More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;



ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> features a visual dataset of.methane emissions from wetlands across the globe. Atmospheric methane levels have reached record highs in recent years, and wetlands are a major source of these emissions.&nbsp;



"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
