The Mediterranean has long been a crossroads of trade and tourism, yet its deepest pocket, the Calypso Deep, seemed beyond the reach of day-to-day pollution. 



That hope ended earlier this year when researchers reported plastic bags, glass shards, and crumpled cans resting 16,770 feet beneath the waves in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ionian_Sea" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ionian Sea</a>.



Their survey logged 167 items on the trench floor - 148 confirmed pieces of marine litter and 19 more that almost certainly came from people. 



By any measure, it is one of the densest concentrations of trash ever recorded in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deep-ocean-buffet-big-fish-are-surprisingly-reliant-on-the-twilight-zone/">dark zone</a> of the ocean.



The discovery arrives as global attention continues to focus on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/surprise-study-some-scientists-call-for-halting-ocean-plastic-cleanup-efforts/">plastic waste</a>. 



Videos of snagged sea turtles and bottle-strewn beaches have already ignited public concern, but those images barely hint at what sinks far below the reach of sunlight.



Now evidence from Calypso Deep shows that even the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/calypso" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mediterranean’s farthest recesses</a> are filling up.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-calypso-deep-is-full-of-plastic-waste">Calypso Deep is full of plastic waste</h2>



The team used the submersible <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DSV_Limiting_Factor" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Limiting Factor</a> to reach the bottom of a kidney-shaped trench roughly 12.4 miles long and 3.1 miles across. 



During a 43-minute trek near the seafloor of the Calypso Deep, cameras captured thousands of objects per square mile, mostly plastic waste discarded by humans.



A single straight-line pass of 2,130 feet was enough to confirm that human trash blankets large stretches of the basin. Most pieces were flexible plastics; glass, metal, and paper rounded out the list.

Even without animals caught on camera, the piles raise alarms because deep-sea communities recover slowly from disturbance.



Calypso Deep lies about 37 miles west of the Peloponnese coast inside the Hellenic Trench, a zone of steep, stepped walls prone to earthquakes. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-waste-rides-currents">Plastic waste rides currents</h2>



Weak currents, usually under 0.8 inches per second and rarely reaching 7 inches per second, let debris settle instead of sweeping it away.



“It comes from various sources, both terrestrial and marine. It could have arrived by various routes, including long-distance transport by ocean currents or direct dumping,” explains <a href="https://web.ub.edu/en/web/directori/?accio=SEL&amp;id=v759w8s35bo5v72r&amp;lang=ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Miquel Canals</a>, professor at the Department of Earth and Ocean Dynamics at the University of Barcelona.



“Some light waste, such as plastics, comes from the coast and escapes to Calypso Deep, just about 37 miles away. Certain plastics, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plastic-bag-bans-have-drastically-reduced-ocean-pollution/">like bags</a>, drift just above the seabed until they are partially or completely buried or break down into smaller fragments," Canals continued.

Rivers, wind, and ship traffic all feed the stream of refuse heading offshore. As algae and other organisms cling to floating polymers, the added weight turns buoyant scraps into sinking hazards. The trench’s closed shape then locks the pieces in place.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-calypso-deep-as-a-plastic-graveyard">Calypso Deep as a plastic graveyard</h2>



Surface eddies often corral floating trash into the trench. When these eddies form over the Calypso Trench, some debris slowly falls to the bottom, aided by degradation and ballasting processes that increase its density. 



Surface currents can also carry debris northward from the Adriatic Sea through the Strait of Otranto and from waters off northwestern Greece.

The same circular flows that drive marine life cycles are now channeling waste into permanent graveyards at the very bottom of Earth's deepest bodies of water.



<a href="https://web.ub.edu/ca/web/actualitat/w/a-sea-of-rubbish-ocean-floor-landfills-?" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earlier work in 2021</a> showed the Strait of Messina carrying the world’s heaviest load of undersea garbage, confirming that the Mediterranean is especially at risk.



“We have also found evidence of boats dumping bags of rubbish, indicated by piles of assorted waste followed by an almost straight furrow," said Canals, expressing his frustration.



That is why the bottom of the Calypso Deep is littered with humans' plastic waste, and also why the problem will do nothing but continue to worsen.



"Unfortunately, when it comes to the Mediterranean, it is fair to say that ‘not a single inch of it is clean.’”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-do-we-go-from-here">Where do we go from here?</h2>



Unlike beaches and coastlines, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/99-percent-of-the-deep-ocean-floor-has-still-never-been-seen-by-humans/">ocean floor</a> remains largely out of sight, making it difficult to build social and political momentum for its conservation. 



Yet what settles at the bottom can influence marine life, food webs, fisheries, climate feedback loops, and even geological stability.



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-mediterranean-nearly-lost-all-of-its-water-6-million-years-ago/">The Mediterranean</a> is an enclosed sea, surrounded by humanity, with intense maritime traffic and widespread fishing activity.



“Scientists, communicators, journalists, influencers - everyone with a platform - must work together. The problem is vast, even if it is not directly visible, and we cannot ignore it," Canals implored.



The trail of refuse from shorelines to Calypso Deep underlines a plain truth: plastics and other debris do not vanish once tossed aside. They ride currents, sink in stages, and ultimately collect in the planet’s most secluded hollows. 



The evidence provided by this research should galvanize global efforts - especially in the Mediterranean - to curb dumping, particularly of plastics, in line with the pending <a href="https://www.globalplasticlaws.org/un-global-plastics-treaty" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UN Global Plastics Treaty</a>.



From the North Atlantic’s first recorded litter in 1975 to the record densities documented across the Mediterranean today, the pattern remains the same - human waste reaches everywhere water flows.



We must do more, we must do better, and we must do it now.

Scientists make disturbing discovery on the deepest parts of the seafloor: 'Not a single inch of it is clean'

An international team of scientists drilled 500 meters through West Antarctica’s Kamb Ice Stream and uncovered a vast, slow-moving channel of water flowing beneath the ice. 



This newly observed subglacial river, which surges roughly once a decade, challenges long-standing assumptions about how meltwater drains beneath the Ross Ice Shelf. 



The discovery offers critical insight into Antarctic hydrology and may significantly refine projections of future sea-level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-two-week-trek-into-the-interior">A two-week trek into the interior</h2>



In late 2021, scientists with <a href="https://www.antarcticscienceplatform.org.nz/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New Zealand’s Antarctic Science Platform</a> left Scott Base and travelled 1,200 kilometers inland by tracked vehicles. 



Their goal was a site where the Kamb Ice Stream - 350 kilometers long and 100 kilometers wide - slides beneath the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mysterious-force-moves-ross-ice-shelf-antarctica-every-day/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ross Ice Shelf</a>. There, in constant daylight and temperatures near –10 °C, engineers set up a temporary camp with an airstrip and weatherproof labs.



Using 80°C water pumped at high pressure, they melted a 30-centimeter-wide borehole through the<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-ice-sheet-past-present-and-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> ice sheet</a> to the bedrock below. Cameras and sensors followed the drill head into the cavity, capturing real-time images and data.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-river-revealed-in-antarctica">Hidden river revealed in Antarctica </h2>



Expedition leader Huw Horgan conducts is an expert at <a href="https://ethz.ch/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ETH Zurich</a> and at the <a href="https://www.wsl.ch/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow, and Landscape Research</a>.



“We struck water at the end of the borehole and with the help of our camera, we even discovered a school of lobster-like creatures - 400 kilometers from the open ocean,” said Horgan.



Echo-soundings showed the channel to be roughly 100 meters high and 200 meters wide - large enough to admit a city block. Instruments registered temperature, salinity, and sediment load, revealing a mixture dominated by seawater that had crept inland beneath the shelf.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-trickling-rivers-beneath-the-ice">Trickling rivers beneath the ice</h2>



Only a trickle of freshwater - less than one cubic meter per second - travels seaward under the glacier. 



“This amount of water is much smaller than what the existing models had predicted,” Horgan said. Because previous simulations assumed greater discharge, many estimates of basal lubrication and melt will need to be recalculated.



The sluggish current does not equate to a stable system, however. Layered sediments removed from the cavity floor preserve signs of sudden, far larger floods.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lakes-release-sudden-surges">Lakes release sudden surges</h2>



“We suspect that the water comes from subglacial lakes upstream. These lakes fill and empty in certain cycles. When they empty, a flood of water rushes towards the sea,” Horgan explained.



Core samples indicate these large flushes occur about once every ten years, with smaller bursts likely escaping detection. Such pulses can scour channels, deliver nutrients to under-ice ecosystems, and momentarily elevate melting where fresh and marine waters meet.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rivers-shape-ice-shelfs">Rivers shape ice shelfs</h2>



“Subglacial watercourses play a central role in the melting of the ice shelf,” Horgan said. 



The Ross Ice Shelf acts as a massive buttress, slowing the glaciers that feed it; any process that thins this floating barrier can accelerate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/emergency-meeting-reveals-the-alarming-extent-of-antarcticas-ice-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice loss</a> from the Antarctic interior.



“Our findings are therefore a prerequisite for developing new models that describe the melting of the ice shelf and predict <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-sea-levels-spiked-dramatically-in-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sea-level rise</a> even more accurately.” 



Incorporating both the steady marine inflow and the episodic lake-drainage floods will improve projections used by coastal planners worldwide.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-planning-for-future-surges">Planning for future surges</h2>



The team intends to return during the 2025–26 austral summer to install long-term instruments that will log pressure, flow speed, and chemistry through multiple flood cycles. 



By comparing those records with satellite altimetry and radar, researchers aim to learn how a warming climate might amplify the frequency or magnitude of these hidden surges.



Studying life in the dark cavity is also on the agenda, prompted by the unexpected sighting of crustacean-like animals far from open water. The biology could reveal how nutrients move from buried rivers to under-ice ecosystems across Antarctica.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rivers-drive-ice-dynamics">Rivers drive ice dynamics</h2>



Hot-water drilling through the Kamb Ice Stream has opened a direct window onto processes that were previously inferred only from remote sensing and theoretical models. 



Each new measurement tightens the link between unseen hydrology and the fate of the planet’s largest ice shelf, edging science closer to reliable forecasts of sea-level rise in a warming world.



With more expeditions planned and permanent instruments on the horizon, the buried <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-rivers-beneath-antarctic-ice-reshape-sea-level-predictions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rivers</a> of Antarctica are finally beginning to surrender their secrets.

It’s a chilling thought - what would happen if every living thing in the ocean vanished? From microscopic plankton to blue whales, ocean life plays a huge role in how our planet stays in balance. 



A new study takes this thought experiment seriously and finds surprising insights into how the death of marine life can affect carbon absorption.



The scientists behind this research are from <a href="https://www.norceresearch.no/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NORCE</a> and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research in Norway. Using the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM), they created detailed simulations to explore how the planet’s climate would respond without ocean life. 



Their goal was to figure out how much we depend on living organisms in the sea to manage carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-ocean-s-role-in-carbon-storage">The ocean’s role in carbon storage</h2>



The ocean isn't just a body of water - it’s a carbon sponge. It soaks up about 25% of the carbon dioxide that humans release into the atmosphere each year. A big part of this carbon storage is thanks to life in the ocean. 



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plankton-tiny-ocean-creatures-overlooked-critical-life-on-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tiny plankton</a> consume carbon near the surface. When they die, they sink, carrying that carbon to the deep ocean. This process is known as the biological carbon pump. But what happens when you remove life from the equation?



In the study, researchers ran two versions of their simulation: one with marine life, and one without. When they took marine life out of the picture, they found that atmospheric CO2 levels jumped by about 50%.



“But the simulation showed that in a scenario where all marine life is eradicated, land ecosystems will absorb about half of the carbon that the ocean cannot take up without <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-impacting-marine-life-more-than-we-realized/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">marine life</a>,” said study co-author Damien Couespel.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-link-between-ocean-life-and-carbon">Link between ocean life and carbon</h2>



The researchers say this study reveals a missing piece in how we understand the climate system. For years, the focus has been on how the ocean's chemistry and temperature affect carbon absorption. But this study suggests that biology plays a much bigger role than previously recognized.



“We have long understood that the biological <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unexpected-carbon-pump-found-in-the-arctic-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon pump</a> plays a crucial role in keeping atmospheric CO2 levels low. However, most studies have overlooked the interaction with Earth's ecosystems. Our research suggests that land ecosystems compensate if marine life is eradicated and the ocean's ability to absorb CO2 is thus limited,” said Jerry Tjiputra, lead author of the study.



The team didn’t stop there. They also simulated the Earth’s climate in two time periods: before humans started burning large amounts of fossil fuels (pre-1850) and in a high-emission future. Again, they ran the model with and without marine life.



“In all cases, much more CO2 will remain in the atmosphere if all marine life were removed. This is because, without living organisms consuming carbon at the ocean surface, the carbon content at the ocean surface is much higher. This limits the ocean's ability to absorb more CO2,” explained Tjiputra.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-how-the-ocean-works">Rethinking how the ocean works</h2>



The results challenge some long-standing ideas. "Our results thus challenge the paradigm that the ocean's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/methane-emissions-offset-carbon-uptake-by-macroalgae/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon uptake</a> is mainly driven by physical and chemical processes, rather than biological ones. An ocean without life would weaken its ability to absorb carbon emissions,” said Couespel.



If marine life disappeared, the world would likely warm faster. The ocean would lose its buffering capacity, and we might trigger even more feedbacks that drive temperatures higher.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ocean-life-and-climate-change">Ocean life and climate change</h2>



No one expects the ocean to suddenly become lifeless. But this “what-if” exercise offers important lessons. The researchers believe it shows how marine and land ecosystems work together to manage our climate.



“We have learned that marine and terrestrial life work together to regulate our climate and that marine life is a key player in shaping the course of climate change. Our research clearly underscores that there is a link between the protection of marine ecosystems and combating climate change," said Tjiputra.



"A healthy ocean buys us time. Damage to marine ecosystems can significantly accelerate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/indisputable-evidence-of-human-caused-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human-caused climate change</a> and further challenge our ability to meet the goals in the Paris Agreement. Preserving the function of marine ecosystems is essential for mitigating climate change and its associated risks."



This simple yet startling study reminds us that life in the ocean isn’t just there for beauty or biodiversity - it’s helping stabilize the planet. And protecting it may be one of our best tools in the fight against climate change.

Capturing and storing carbon dioxide is essential to slow global warming, but current methods are costly and so energy-hungry they often rely on fossil fuels themselves. Now, a research team has devised a new carbon capture technique that harnesses an abundant, clean, and free energy source: sunlight.



In a recent study by <a href="https://www.cornell.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cornell University</a>, researchers describe how they mimicked the carbon-fixing mechanism used by plants to develop the first light-powered system that can both capture and release carbon dioxide.



The method promises to lower costs and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cutting-emissions-could-save-250000-lives-a-year-in-europe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emissions</a> associated with carbon capture, offering a sustainable alternative to existing technologies by harnessing sunlight.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-different-approach-to-carbon-capture">A different approach to carbon capture</h2>



Carbon dioxide is notoriously difficult to trap because of its chemical stability. Most carbon capture <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/capturing-carbon-directly-from-the-air-is-now-much-more-efficient-thanks-to-new-material/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">efforts</a> rely on amines - organic compounds derived from ammonia - that selectively bind CO₂. 



However, these compounds degrade in the presence of oxygen and require constant replacement, leading to high energy costs for their production.



“From the beginning, our lab has tried to think about how we can use our intuition as chemists to find alternative pathways to carbon dioxide capture,” said senior author Phillip Milner, an associate professor of chemistry and chemical biology in the College of Arts and Sciences. “We basically have a motto of ‘anything but amines.’”



The new method relies on a stable enol molecule that becomes reactive enough under <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dirty-sky-less-sunlight-how-pollution-steals-our-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sunlight</a> to “grab” carbon dioxide. Once captured, a shift in pH triggers the release of the CO₂ through a process known as decarboxylation.



Importantly, the entire system operates without the need for cooling between capture and release - one of the major energy bottlenecks in existing methods.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-capture-inspired-by-photosynthesis">Carbon capture inspired by photosynthesis</h2>



The reaction mechanism is inspired by the enzyme RuBisCo, which plants use to fix carbon during <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-foundation-of-life-is-at-risk-from-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">photosynthesis</a>. Graduate student Bayu Ahmad, who is the first author of the study, developed the concept of using sunlight to drive both carbon capture and release.



“From a chemistry standpoint, this is totally different from what anybody else is doing in carbon capture,” Milner said. “The whole mechanism was Bayu’s idea, and when he originally showed it to me, I thought it would never work. It totally works.”



The team employed 2-methylbenzophenone, a low-cost sorbent, to anchor the process. Testing revealed that the new sunlight method’s carbon capture rate matched or outperformed other light-driven technologies, while avoiding common pitfalls like the need for extensive cooling infrastructure.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-real-world-testing-with-flue-gas"><a></a>Real-world testing with flue gas</h2>



Lab successes often falter when faced with real-world samples full of impurities. To address this, the researchers tested their system using flue gas from Cornell’s Combined Heat and Power Building, which burns natural gas to supply campus energy. The method successfully isolated carbon dioxide from these complex samples.



“Getting real flue gas from industry is really difficult, because companies don’t want people to know what’s coming out of their power plants,” Milner said.



“But Cornell is not a company - so this is something unique that we can offer and that we hope will be operational in the next year.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-lab-bench-to-solar-fields"><a></a>From lab bench to solar fields</h2>



Looking ahead, the team envisions scaling the technology into installations resembling solar panels. But instead of generating electricity, these panels would extract CO₂ directly from the air, producing pure, high-pressure carbon dioxide that could be stored or converted on-site.



“We’d really like to get to the point where we can remove carbon dioxide from air, because I think that’s the most practical,” Milner said.



“You can imagine going into the desert, you put up these panels that are sucking carbon dioxide out of the air and turning it into pure high-pressure carbon dioxide. We could then put it in a pipeline or convert it into something on-site.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broadening-the-impact-light-driven-separations"><a></a>Broadening the impact: Light-driven separations</h2>



The benefits of this innovation extend beyond carbon dioxide. Milner’s lab is also investigating how sunlight-powered separations could be applied to other industrial gases.



“There’s a lot of opportunity to reduce energy consumption by using light to drive these separations instead of electricity,” Milner said.



This is crucial because separation processes account for about 15% of global energy consumption. Light-powered alternatives could significantly cut those figures, aligning with global sustainability goals.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-open-source-flue-gas-facility"><a></a>An open-source flue gas facility</h2>



In a further effort to support carbon capture research, Milner is part of a project to make flue gas from Cornell’s power plant available to other scientists and startups. This initiative, funded by the <a href="https://www.atkinson.cornell.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability</a>, aims to create a unique testing ground for real-world carbon capture technologies.



By combining plant-inspired chemistry with the clean energy of sunlight, Milner and his team have opened a promising new path toward cost-effective, scalable carbon capture. 



The new approach not only addresses the energy pitfalls of current systems but also offers a blueprint for sustainable industrial separations, moving closer to practical solutions in the fight against <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-earth-energy-imbalance-temperature-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a>.

Experts use sunlight to capture carbon

Capturing and storing carbon dioxide is essential to slow global...

Despite growing global efforts to curb emissions, methane pollution from the fossil fuel industry remained alarmingly close to historic highs in 2024. 



This surge happened alongside record levels of oil, gas, and coal production, according to new findings.



The analysis, released by scientists from the <a href="https://www.iea.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">International Energy Agency</a> (IEA), highlights how tackling methane - an invisible but highly potent greenhouse gas - remains one of the simplest and fastest ways to cool the planet. Yet, progress is stalling.



The report warns that many countries are underreporting methane leaks, particularly from energy infrastructure like pipelines, drilling equipment, and abandoned sites.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-methane-deserves-more-attention">Why methane deserves more attention</h2>



Methane is second only to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-carbon-dioxide-travels-in-the-atmosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon dioxide</a> when it comes to its contribution to climate change. But unlike CO₂, methane doesn’t linger in the atmosphere for centuries. It breaks down in about a decade, meaning slashing its emissions could deliver quick climate relief.



Still, governments are failing to keep up with their promises. The IEA estimates actual methane emissions from the energy sector are about 80% higher than what countries report to the United Nations. That’s a massive gap.



The energy sector alone is responsible for roughly a third of all human-driven methane emissions. These leaks often go unnoticed - or unreported. They can occur during maintenance or result from faulty infrastructure. In many cases, stopping them is surprisingly simple and affordable.



"However, the latest data indicates that implementation on methane has continued to fall short of ambitions," said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-methane-emissions-by-country">Methane emissions by country</h2>



In 2024, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-fuel-pollution-is-causing-disease-disaster-and-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossil fuel</a> sector released over 120 million tons of methane - nearly as much as the record year of 2019.



China topped the list, mostly due to its coal industry. The United States came in second, driven by its oil and gas operations, with Russia not far behind.



But methane isn’t just leaking from currently operating fields. The IEA’s new analysis highlights that old, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/abandoned-oil-wells-could-revolutionize-energy-storage/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">abandoned oil wells</a> and coal mines are major culprits too. 



If counted as a country, these forgotten sources would rank as the fourth-largest emitter of methane, responsible for eight million tons last year alone.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-watching-leaks-from-orbit">Watching leaks from orbit</h2>



One reason the IEA can now paint a clearer picture of methane pollution is <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forest-space-age-satellites-can-track-canopies-and-carbon-storage/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">satellite technology</a>. More than 25 satellites are now scanning the globe for methane plumes. They can detect leaks as they happen, even in remote regions.



One satellite, Europe’s Sentinel 5, only detects the largest emissions. But what it sees is worrying. 



“Super-emitting methane events” reached a new record in 2024. These giant leaks were reported in several regions, particularly the United States, Turkmenistan, and Russia.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-big-pledges-little-progress">Big pledges, little progress</h2>



About 40% of methane comes from natural sources like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-seas-release-more-methane-from-wetlands-than-expected/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wetlands</a>. But the rest - mainly from agriculture and energy - can be controlled. And scientists agree: methane from fossil fuels is the easiest to fix.



More than 150 countries have pledged to reduce their methane emissions by 30% by 2030. Many oil and gas companies have set 2050 targets. But so far, real-world progress has been underwhelming.



The IEA says that cutting methane from fossil fuels could prevent about 0.1°C of global warming by 2050.



"This would have a tremendous impact - comparable to eliminating all CO₂ emissions from the world's heavy industry in one stroke," the report said.



In fact, existing technology could cut 70% of energy-sector methane emissions. Yet, only 5% of current global oil and gas production meets near-zero methane standards.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-methane-leaks-from-coal-mines">Methane leaks from coal mines</h2>



One key area still being overlooked is methane from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/u-s-coal-ash-holds-tons-of-rare-earth-elements-worth-8-4-billion/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coal</a>. Energy think tank Ember says that to stay on track for net-zero goals, methane emissions from fossil fuels need to drop by 75% by 2030.



Ember analyst Sabina Assan added that coal’s contribution is “still being ignored.”



"There are cost-effective technologies available today, so this is a low-hanging fruit of tackling methane. We can't let coal mines off the hook any longer," she said.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-time-to-tackle-methane">Time to tackle methane</h2>



The tools and knowledge to tackle methane pollution are already in our hands. What’s missing is action. 



As countries and companies race to limit climate damage, cutting methane is a no-brainer. But unless governments and industries take this seriously - and soon - the window to avoid the worst impacts of warming will continue to close.

Floating photovoltaics (FPV), or “floatovoltaics,” are spreading across water bodies worldwide. From California’s vineyards to China’s massive energy projects, these solar systems glide atop irrigation ponds, reservoirs, and wastewater treatment plants. 



They produce clean energy without consuming precious land, a seemingly perfect solution in a space-constrained world.



But the water beneath these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/floating-solar-panels-could-power-entire-countries/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">panels</a> isn’t empty. It teems with life. Birds drift, dive, nest, and hunt in these waters. As FPV systems expand, they introduce a new dynamic to these habitats - and nobody knows yet what the consequences might be.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-floating-solar-and-bird-habitats">Floating solar and bird habitats</h2>



A recent study from the <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Davis</a>, published in the journal Nature Water, raises a vital question: Can renewable energy and wildlife coexist without collateral damage? The researchers, part of the UC Davis Wild Energy Center, are among the first to examine how waterbirds respond to FPV systems.



“That’s why it’s so important to understand how waterbirds are going to respond to floating solar and if there is the possibility for conservation concessions at new floating solar facilities,” said Elliott Steele, a postdoctoral scholar with the UC Davis Wild Energy Center within the Energy and Efficiency Institute.



Steele’s words are urgent. Bird populations are plummeting. Habitat loss, climate change, pollution, and avian influenza have combined into a perfect storm of threats. If floating solar disrupts waterbird behavior, it could exacerbate an already dire situation.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bird-responses-to-floating-solar-systems">Bird responses to floating solar systems</h2>



Imagine a black-crowned night heron standing motionless on a solar <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/floating-solar-panels-could-power-every-home-in-the-u-s/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">panel</a> before dawn. Below, cormorants dart through the water, jostling for a place to perch. A black phoebe builds a nest beneath the panels, sheltered but close to human-made structures.



These are not imagined scenes. During their fieldwork, the UC Davis researchers observed all these behaviors. Birds are not just interacting with FPV systems — they are adapting to them, sometimes in unexpected ways.



“Our team has been documenting such a diversity of bird <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/floridas-waterbirds-expert-divers-with-bold-hunting-techniques/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">behavior</a> with floating PV, so we immediately knew this was a very important interaction, especially given the precipitous decline in waterbird numbers globally,” said senior author and UC Davis Professor Rebecca R. Hernandez.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-benefits-and-risks-of-floating-solar">Benefits and risks of floating solar</h2>



Renewable energy projects have not always considered <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saving-americas-birds-scientists-declare-a-full-on-emergency-in-the-us/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildlife</a>. Now, as FPV systems expand, researchers are determined not to repeat past mistakes. The UC Davis team identified five areas demanding urgent study.



First, the researchers are exploring how waterbirds interact with FPV structures, questioning whether these birds use the solar panels as nesting sites, hunting perches, or safe resting places.



In addition, they are investigating the direct and indirect effects of FPV systems on waterbirds. While a panel may provide shelter to one species, it may simultaneously deter another.



The team is considering how conservation strategies can be tailored to specific sites, regions, and seasons, recognizing that bird populations vary significantly in their behaviors and needs.



Furthermore, they are examining how best to design monitoring systems at FPV sites. Should they rely on cameras, sensors, or traditional bird counts to collect data effectively?



The researchers are also assessing the potential for pollutants to be released from FPV systems. If such contamination occurs, they aim to determine what can be done to mitigate the risks to aquatic and avian life.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-renewable-energy-design">Rethinking renewable energy design</h2>



Study co-author Emma Forester is a Ph.D. candidate with the UC Davis Land, Air and Water Resources department and the Wild Energy Center.



“There are some things we wished we’d known before other kinds of renewable energy were developed,” said Forester.



“While we’re at this critical threshold of renewable energy <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/solar-panels-are-1000-times-more-powerful-with-new-tech-breakthrough/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">development</a>, we want to put more thought into the design that can benefit birds and other wildlife as we go forward.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-balancing-act-energy-vs-ecology">The balancing act: Energy vs. ecology</h2>



Floating solar systems present a compelling case for water conservation. They can reduce evaporation by shading the water surface, an added benefit in drought-prone areas. But there’s a catch.



While some birds, like the black-crowned night heron, seem to thrive on the panels, others might not. Researchers observed birds using FPV systems in various ways - nesting, perching, feeding - but the long-term impacts remain unclear.



And then there’s pollution. Solar panels are not inert objects. As they age, they can degrade, releasing chemicals into the water. What happens to the fish, algae or the birds? These questions linger, unanswered.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-designing-for-wildlife">Designing for wildlife</h2>



To ensure that FPV systems are truly green, wildlife considerations must be integrated from the start. 



Hernandez and her team emphasize that waterbirds are ideal subjects for these studies. They occupy both the water and the air, making them sensitive indicators of environmental change.



But there’s a deeper challenge. Conservation strategies that work in California may fail in Florida. Solutions for herons may not suit cormorants. Customization is key.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-at-stake">What’s at stake</h2>



Floating solar may be new, but the questions it raises are not. When energy projects collide with nature, unintended consequences often follow. As renewable energy scales up, researchers must consider not just the panels but the ecosystems they disrupt.



Floating solar has enormous potential. But without rigorous, long-term studies, that potential could come at a steep ecological cost. For now, the researchers at UC Davis are watching the waterbirds - and hoping the world will pay attention.



The study, funded by the <a href="https://uckeepresearching.org/california-climate-action/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">California Climate Action Seed Grant</a>, <a href="https://www.enelgreenpower.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Enel Green Power</a>, and several U.S. government agencies, is a starting point. 



The research team includes scientists from UC Davis, the <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Geological Survey</a>, the <a href="https://www.ucf.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Central Florida</a>, <a href="https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lancaster University</a>, and <a href="https://www.enelgreenpower.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Enel Green Power</a> in Italy.

Floating solar panels affect bird habitats in unexpected ways

An enormous iceberg the size of Chicago recently split away from the <a href="https://www.antarcticglaciers.org/glacial-geology/antarctic-ice-sheet/alexander-island/george-vi-ice-shelf/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">George VI Ice Shelf</a>. In the midst of that dramatic break, a research team in Antarctica witnessed a surprising encounter with an elusive creature.



Expedition co-chief scientist, <a href="https://schmidtocean.org/person/patricia-esquete/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Patricia Esquete</a> of the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (<a href="https://www.cesam-la.pt/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CESAM</a>) and the Department of Biology (DBio) at the <a href="https://www.ua.pt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Aveiro</a>, Portugal, was part of the <a href="https://schmidtocean.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">group</a> that explored this newly opened section of ocean. 



Researchers found an impressive web of corals, sponges, icefish, and enormous sea spiders thriving beneath the floating ice.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-iceberg-breaks-off">An iceberg breaks off</h2>



When <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/153968/new-antarctic-iceberg-speeds-off" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iceberg A-84</a> separated from the Antarctic Peninsula in January 2025, it revealed an untouched seafloor. This hidden environment had been concealed under ice hundreds of feet thick for many decades.



Most scientists expected sparse life in those cold depths. Instead, the remotely operated vehicle <a href="https://schmidtocean.org/rov-subastian-status/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">(ROV) SuBastian</a> captured footage of vibrant communities at depths reaching down to 4,300 feet (1,300 meters).



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-window-into-an-unknown-ecosystem">Window into an unknown ecosystem</h2>



Deep-sea ecosystems often rely on nutrients drifting down from above, yet this region remained sealed beneath thick <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massive-hole-polynya-the-size-of-switzerland-appeared-in-the-antarctica-sea-ice/">ice</a> for centuries. 



Ocean currents may transport crucial resources, allowing surprising biodiversity to flourish in complete darkness.



Scientists discovered corals, icefish, and unusual invertebrates. They also stumbled upon the giant phantom jelly, a massive predator that has seldom been observed by human eyes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-the-giant-phantom-jelly">Meet the giant phantom jelly</h2>



The giant phantom jellyfish (<a href="https://www.mbari.org/animal/giant-phantom-jelly/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stygiomedusa gigantea</a>) can have a bell measuring more than three feet (1 meter) across, with four trailing arms that can reach over 33 feet (10 meters). 



Researchers first collected a specimen of this ghostly jelly in 1899 but only recognized it as a distinct species around 60 years later.



Its mauve body appears translucent. Instead of normal tentacles, those ribbon-like arms help capture prey and draw it toward the jelly’s central mouth.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-phantom-jelly-intelligence">Phantom jelly intelligence</h2>



Researchers noted behavior in the giant phantom jelly that suggested a level of control and coordination not typically seen in jellyfish. 



Its arm movements appeared deliberate, almost cautious, as it maneuvered through narrow gullies on the seafloor.



Though <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-invasion-jellyfish-are-moving-north-in-a-warming-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">jellyfish</a> lack a brain, some species use a nerve net to process environmental cues. 



The team believes that future analysis of this footage could provide rare insight into how deep-sea invertebrates without centralized nervous systems respond to complex terrain .



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-ecosystem-growth">Ancient ecosystem growth</h2>



One large sponge, that probably grew less than an inch a year, indicated that the ecosystem was old. 



Scientists believe many creatures here have been thriving for decades or more, forming stable communities in a dark, pressurized environment.



“We didn’t expect to find such a beautiful, thriving ecosystem. Based on the size of the animals, the communities we observed have been there for decades, maybe even hundreds of years,” said Dr. Esquete.



Persistent water flow below the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giant-icebergs-are-not-the-main-threat-to-antarcticas-stability/">ice</a> shelf may bring nutrients from open water. Some species showed adaptations that suggested minimal dependence on direct sunlight.



Small anemones, brittle stars, and hydroids were spotted clinging to rocks. The combination of seafloor features and ocean patterns likely fuels these bustling ecological pockets.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-changing-world">A changing world</h2>



Antarctica’s ice sheets have been losing mass for decades due to climate change. Many glaciers and shelves are thinning, and large icebergs are calving more often.



“The ice loss from the Antarctic Ice Sheet is a major contributor to sea level rise worldwide,” said expedition co-chief scientist, <a href="https://schmidtocean.org/person/sasha-montelli/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sasha Montelli</a> of University College London (<a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCL</a>). Scientists on this mission aim to gather data that can improve projections for future changes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clues-hidden-in-rock-samples">Clues hidden in rock samples</h2>



In addition to studying marine life, the team collected geological samples from the newly exposed seabed. 



Using push cores - narrow tubes pressed into sediment - they extracted layers of material that could reveal a timeline of past environmental changes.



These samples help reconstruct ice movements and sedimentation rates. As <a href="https://schmidtocean.org/person/eugenio-veloso/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Eugenio Andrés Veloso</a> of the Chilean Geological Survey sorted through the material, he noted that certain layers may even hold microfossils that offer a record of ancient ocean conditions long before the ice shelf existed.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-autonomous-underwater-helpers">Autonomous underwater helpers</h2>



In addition to ROV SuBastian, researchers deployed gliders to measure temperature, salinity, and biological activity. 



Preliminary analyses show that meltwater from George VI influences the ocean’s nutrient balance in this region.



Gathered measurements will help the international team piece together how currents move materials beneath the ice. 



They hope to understand why these habitats remain so productive despite the dark conditions and great depths.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-science">Implications for science</h2>



Exploring a section of newly-exposed seafloor offers a rare glimpse into what normally lies hidden. Observations of corals, sponges, and large predators challenge assumptions about what can endure under thick ice.



Researchers suspect they have spotted several undescribed organisms. Documenting these species may reshape ideas about Antarctic biodiversity and how life survives in such harsh conditions.

Tropical forests, home to about half of the world's biodiversity, play a vital role in stabilizing the planet’s climate. Every year, they absorb roughly as much carbon dioxide as the entire European continent emits. However, lianas, such as passionflowers and other species, are increasingly dominating tropical forests. 



“Lianas can smother and kill trees. When they dominate, the forest becomes choked, and mainly lianas continue growing over fallen trees,” explained ecologist Marco Visser from <a href="https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/science/environmental-sciences" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Leiden's Institute of Environmental Sciences</a> (CML).



During his doctoral research in 2016, Visser was the first to model liana proliferation using methods from infectious disease research.



“Lianas - such as passionflowers and numerous other species - can be compared to tapeworms. They intercept trees' resources and can more than double <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tree-mortality-is-pushing-the-amazon-to-a-tipping-point/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tree mortality</a>.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-global-surge-not-just-in-the-americas"><a></a>A global surge, not just in the Americas</h2>



Until recently, the increase in lianas was thought to be mostly a problem in South and Latin America. However, PhD candidate Manuela Rueda-Trujillo, supervised by Visser, reviewed hundreds of studies on lianas. The findings, published in the journal <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/gcb.17485" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Global Change Biology</a>, reveal a far more alarming trend.



“A liana pandemic has been raging for more than 30 years, with their prevalence rising by 10% to 24% every decade,” Visser said. This pattern is not confined to the Americas. The surge is occurring in tropical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tropical-forests-are-struggling-to-keep-pace-with-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forests</a> across the globe.



In regions where lianas gain the upper hand, the consequences are devastating. Forest regeneration can come to a standstill, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seagrass-plays-a-major-role-in-global-carbon-storage/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon storage</a> may fall by as much as 95 percent. “That's almost equivalent to deforestation,” Visser warned.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-co₂-fuels-liana-domination"><a></a>CO₂ fuels liana domination</h2>



What is driving this explosive growth? Visser points to the increasing concentration of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-carbon-dioxide-travels-in-the-atmosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmospheric CO₂</a> as a key factor.



“All plants grow faster with more CO₂, but lianas benefit even more. They cheat - they don't invest in structural support, borrowing it from trees instead, and their leaves require less energy and nutrients to produce.”



Unlike trees, which must grow sturdy trunks to reach the sunlight, lianas simply climb their neighbors. Once they reach the canopy, they spread their leaves over tree crowns, stealing most of the sunlight. This aggressive growth strategy allows lianas to outcompete trees in the race for light and resources.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seeing-lianas-from-space"><a></a>Seeing lianas from space</h2>



In a recent study published in the journal <a href="https://esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ecy.70082" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ecology</a>, Visser and his team, along with American and British collaborators, demonstrated that lianas can be spotted from space. For the first time, they explained why these vines stand out in satellite imagery.



Visser developed mathematical models predicting how light interacts with liana leaves. To test these predictions, the team used cranes to reach treetops in Panama and measure leaf properties directly. Their findings confirmed the models were correct.



Liana leaves are different from tree leaves in two key ways. First, they reflect more light and infrared radiation. Second, they lie flatter, forming a dense, opaque cover. “Lianas are true egoists,” Visser said. “Tree leaves tilt, allowing light to reach lower neighbors - even the forest floor gets some sunlight. But lianas leave almost nothing for others.”



These distinct properties make liana infestations detectable in satellite images. “Now that we understand why lianas are detectable from space, we can develop targeted techniques to map their spread and impact worldwide.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-should-we-cut-them-down"><a></a>Should we cut them down?</h2>



Given their destructive impact, is it time to start cutting lianas to protect tropical forests? Visser advises caution. “We shouldn't intervene until we fully understand their ecological role. They bear fruit year-round and are vital for rare monkey and bird species.”



While lianas threaten carbon storage and forest regeneration, they also play essential roles in supporting wildlife. Some species depend on them for food and shelter, making any broad removal efforts risky.



Instead, Visser emphasizes a different solution: addressing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/small-climate-changes-have-drastic-effects-on-tropical-plants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a>. Rising CO₂ levels give lianas an edge over trees. Slowing or reversing climate change is, according to him, the only long-term way to curb the liana takeover. “The only necessary action is halting climate change, which will also slow the expansion of lianas,” he said.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-emerging-global-challenge"><a></a>An emerging global challenge</h2>



The growing dominance of lianas poses a complex challenge for conservation. These vines are not invasive outsiders but native components of tropical forests. Yet, human-driven changes in the atmosphere are tipping the balance in their favor, with far-reaching consequences.



Thanks to new insights from satellite monitoring and field research, scientists are now better equipped to track and understand this phenomenon. But as lianas continue their relentless spread, the clock is ticking for the world’s tropical forests - and for the vital services they provide.

A new survey of North Sea waters has revealed that several shark and ray species move through Dutch offshore wind farms and may even use them as shelter.



By reading traces of DNA suspended in seawater, scientists from <a href="https://www.wur.nl/en.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wageningen University &amp; Research</a> have shown that these high-tech energy sites could also play an unexpected part in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-conservation-credit-system-could-reduce-costs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">marine conservation</a>. 



The research provides new evidence that renewable-energy structures can interact with marine life in complex ways - sometimes for the better.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sharks-and-rays-at-wind-farms">Sharks and rays at wind farms</h2>



The team collected 436 water samples inside and around four wind-farm zones: Borssele, Hollandse Kust Zuid, Luchterduinen, and Gemini. Each sample was filtered in the lab for fragments of genetic material shed by passing animals. The method, known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dna-fishing-helps-scientists-survey-marine-life-in-the-deep-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environmental DNA</a> or eDNA, is sensitive enough to confirm a species’ presence without nets or hooks.



“We're trying to understand whether these animals are actually using the wind farms as habitat, or whether they're being displaced by them,” said lead author Annemiek Hermans, a PhD candidate at Wageningen University &amp; Research.



Five elasmobranchs - <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mediterranean-sharks-face-growing-threats-despite-conservation-efforts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sharks</a> and rays - left a clear genetic signature at wind farms. Thornback rays appeared most often and in three of the four farms throughout the year.



Starry smooth-hound sharks and blonde rays showed up in multiple seasons. Basking sharks, famous for their long migrations, were detected in Hollandse Kust Zuid during winter, hinting at cold-season routes previously unknown in Dutch waters.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reading-the-water-for-clues">Reading the water for clues</h2>



“It's like finding a fingerprint in the water,” Hermans explained. “Even if you don't see the shark, the DNA tells you it's been there.”



Because the technique is quick and does not disturb wildlife, it opens new doors for large-scale monitoring in rough offshore conditions. It also lets scientists compare many sites over time, revealing patterns that traditional surveys might miss.



The study drew on earlier data gathered by <a href="https://www.therichnorthsea.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Rich North Sea program</a>, then added fresh fieldwork to paint a broader picture. By merging datasets, the researchers confirmed that sharks and rays are not just skirting the turbine fields - they are moving through them in measurable numbers.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-turbines-sharks-and-rays-find-shelter">Turbines: Sharks and rays find shelter</h2>



Turbine safety zones ban bottom-trawling and other gear that gouges the seabed. Those restrictions give benthic habitats a break from constant disturbance, allowing worms, shellfish and small fish to rebound. Such changes create richer feeding grounds and hiding spots for predators higher up the food web.



“We must tread carefully,” Hermans cautioned. “If we start allowing bottom trawling in these areas, we risk losing the very protection these zones may offer.”



Vulnerable elasmobranchs, which mature slowly and lay few eggs, could benefit most from these inadvertent sanctuaries.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wind-farms-influence-sharks-and-rays">Wind farms influence sharks and rays</h2>



The findings arrive just as the European Union rolls out the Nature Restoration Law and updates its Habitats Directive.



Policymakers face a delicate task: scaling up <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tapping-into-the-natural-power-of-plants-for-renewable-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">renewable energy</a> without harming the ecosystems they hope to safeguard. Evidence that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/offshore-wind-farms-threaten-marine-life-hotspots/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wind farms</a> can double as conservation assets offers a rare chance for a “win-win” approach.



The six-year <a href="https://www.wur.nl/en/project/elasmopower-1.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ElasmoPower project</a>, under which this study falls, also looks at how electromagnetic fields from subsea power cables might influence shark and ray behavior.



Future work will blend lab trials with camera arrays, sensors, and more eDNA sampling to see whether the animals linger, feed, or breed inside turbine clusters - or simply pass through.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-next-steps-for-north-sea-wildlife"><a></a>Next steps for North Sea wildlife</h2>



Using non-invasive genetics, the team now has a baseline for tracking seasonal movements and long-term trends. Repeating the survey in different years and depths could reveal whether the number of elasmobranchs rises as benthic life recovers beneath turbine blades.



The same approach might be applied to other protected species, guiding spatial plans that place turbines where they help rather than harm.



For now, the study demonstrates that wind farms are more than power plants. They are new structures in a busy sea, shaping habitats in ways still being mapped. Whether those changes become a net gain for threatened sharks and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-rays-were-more-diverse-than-previously-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rays</a> will depend on careful management - and on keeping the trawls out.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-beneath-the-waves">Beneath the waves</h2>



The North Sea is a crowded stage of shipping lanes, fishing grounds and growing energy grids. Environmental DNA offers a swift, animal-friendly way to see how each new addition affects life below the surface.



In this case it has been shown that, under the right rules, rows of spinning turbines might turn into corridors of relative calm for some of the ocean’s most ancient fish.

Offshore wind farms are now habitats for sharks and rays

A new survey of North Sea waters has revealed that...

Children born today are stepping into a world that is increasingly defined by climate extremes.



Heatwaves, floods, wildfires, droughts, and tropical cyclones are occurring more often and with greater intensity. As global temperatures continue to rise, these extreme events are projected to grow even more severe.



More than any generation before them, young people face a future that will be shaped by climate uncertainty. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-world-of-climate-extremes">A world of climate extremes</h2>



New research from scientists at <a href="https://www.vub.be/nl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vrije Universiteit Brussel</a> (VUB) and Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) paints a startling picture. 



The study shows that today’s children will likely experience a much higher number of climate extremes over their lifetime compared to those born just a few decades earlier. And in many parts of the world, these experiences will be without historical precedent.



“In 2021, we demonstrated how children are to face disproportionate increases in extreme event exposure - especially in low-income countries," said Wim Thiery, professor of climate science at VUB and senior author of the study.



"Now, we examined how the cumulative exposure to climate extremes across one’s lifetime will far exceed that which would have been experienced in a pre-industrial climate."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-unprecedented-life">An unprecedented life</h2>



The study introduces a concept called an “unprecedented life.” According to Dr. Luke Grant, the study's lead author, living an unprecedented life means that, without climate change, one would have less than a 1-in-10,000 chance of experiencing that many climate extremes across one’s lifetime.

“This is a stringent threshold that identifies populations facing climate extremes far beyond what could be expected without <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/indisputable-evidence-of-human-caused-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">man-made climate change</a>,” said Dr. Grant.
</blockquote>



The scientists arrived at these conclusions by combining demographic data with projections from climate models. 



This allowed them to calculate, for every region on Earth, the percentage of people born between 1960 and 2020 who are expected to live through an unprecedented number of climate extremes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-future-defined-by-climate-extremes">A future defined by climate extremes</h2>



The findings revealed a clear generational divide. The younger someone is, the more extreme events they are likely to endure.



Even if <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/limiting-global-warming-to-1-5-degrees-celsius-would-save-billions-of-lives/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global warming</a> is limited to 1.5°C, more than half (52%) of children born in 2020 will face a lifetime of unprecedented heatwaves. In contrast, only 16% of those born in 1960 would face such extremes.



“By stabilizing our climate around 1.5 °C above pre-industrial temperatures, about half of today’s young people will be exposed to an unprecedented number of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-has-made-heatwaves-more-deadly/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heatwaves</a> in their lifetime. Under a 3.5 °C scenario, over 90% will endure such exposure throughout their lives,” noted Dr. Grant.



“The same picture emerges for other climate extremes examined, though with slightly lower affected fractions of the population. Yet the same unfair generational differences in unprecedented exposure is observed.”



And geography matters. Children in tropical countries are especially vulnerable - even under a 1.5°C warming limit.



If emissions continue on their current path, nearly every child on Earth could end up facing a future defined by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-summer-rainfall-events-have-increased-in-the-u-s/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme events</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inequality-makes-the-crisis-worse">Inequality makes the crisis worse</h2>



The research also highlights the injustice of climate change. Children who are more likely to be exposed to extreme events are most often living in poorer countries that are the least equipped to respond. These communities often lack the infrastructure and resources needed to adapt or recover.

“Precisely the most vulnerable children experience the worst escalation of climate extremes. With limited resources and adaptation options, they face disproportionate risks,” said Thiery.

Under current policies, 95% of the most socioeconomically vulnerable children born in 2020 are expected to live through unprecedented heatwave exposure. For the least vulnerable group, that number is 78 percent.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urgent-action-is-needed">Urgent action is needed</h2>



The timing of this study is no coincidence. It arrives as world leaders prepare for COP30 in Brazil, where new climate commitments will be on the table. 



Right now, existing policies put the planet on a path toward approximately 2.7°C of warming this century. The scientists behind this study, along with global advocates, are calling for stronger, faster action to keep warming below 1.5°C.



“Across the world, children are forced to bear the brunt of a crisis they are not responsible for," said Inger Ashing, CEO of Save the Children International.



"Dangerous heat that puts their health and learning at risk; <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/are-bomb-cyclones-increasing-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cyclones</a> that batter their homes and schools; creeping droughts that shrivel up crops and shrink what’s on their plates. Amid this daily drumbeat of disasters, children plead with us not to switch off." 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protecting-children-from-climate-extremes">Protecting children from climate extremes </h2>



This new research shows there is still hope, but only if we act urgently and ambitiously to limit warming temperatures rapidly to 1.5 °C. We need to put children front and center of our response to climate change.



“With global emissions still rising and the planet only 0.2 °C away from the 1.5 °C threshold, world leaders must step up to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lessen the climate burden on today’s youth,” concluded Thiery.



The study doesn’t just offer a warning - it offers a choice. Today’s decisions will shape the future lives of millions of children, including how many climate extremes they will have to endure.

Today’s children will face more climate extremes than ever before

Monsoons across the planet are known for their seasonal timing, delivering vital rainfall in some months and waning in others. Yet the exact reasons behind their shifts from dry to wet conditions have often puzzled researchers.



In a new study, scientists revealed that the atmosphere can hold moisture for longer than previously suspected, adding a twist to traditional thinking about these large-scale <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-land-conditions-affect-the-asian-monsoon-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">weather</a> systems.



This phenomenon was identified by Anja Katzenberger, a climatologist at the <a href="https://www.pik-potsdam.de/en/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research</a>, who investigated the ways water vapor shapes the timing of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-rainfall-increases-as-a-direct-result-of-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rainfall</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seasonal-rains-support-billions">Seasonal rains support billions</h2>



Monsoon rains emerge each year in regions such as South Asia, West Africa, parts of the Americas, and East Asia. More than <a href="https://community.wmo.int/en/news/wgtmra-new-international-monsoons-project-office-launched-support-global-monsoon-research-activities" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">two billion people</a> rely on these rains to to irrigate crops and replenish rivers.



Scientists have long connected monsoon onset with the warming of land masses under stronger sunlight in spring. Yet findings suggest there may be more to this process than just solar energy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-moisture-memory">The role of moisture memory</h2>



Research indicates a property known as <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/mathematics/bistability" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bistability</a>, where the atmosphere settles in either a rainy or a dry configuration for a given level of solar heating. This stable arrangement persists until a certain threshold of moisture tips the system into a new state.



“The atmosphere can ‘remember’ its previous state by storing physical information in the form of water vapor,” said Katzenberger. This storage creates conditions where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rain-and-snow-are-difficult-to-forecast-at-near-freezing-temperatures/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rainfall</a> can switch on rapidly after enough moisture builds.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testing-rainfall-without-oceans">Testing rainfall without oceans</h2>



To isolate the atmosphere’s behavior, the researchers used a specialized climate model called a <a href="https://www.ipcc-data.org/guidelines/pages/gcm_guide.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">general circulation model</a>. They removed slower Earth systems like oceans to test how the air alone responds to changing conditions.



The results showed that even without ocean heat, the atmosphere could switch states once moisture passed a certain level. This finding confirms that memory-like behavior exists within the air itself - contradicting long-held assumptions in <a href="https://www.gfdl.noaa.gov/earth-system-model/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate science</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-moisture-for-monsoon-timing">Moisture for monsoon timing</h2>



We usually think of water vapor escaping or condensing in short time frames. But researchers found evidence that it can accumulate over weeks to sustain wet <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-summer-rainfall-events-have-increased-in-the-u-s/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conditions</a> when the rains begin.



“We’ve long known that systems like the ocean or ice sheets have some sort of memory,” said Anders Levermann, who leads the Complexity Science department at the institute.



Those discoveries hinted that slower climate processes could store energy, yet the idea of the air having a similar capacity seemed far-fetched until now.

The consequences are not limited to just a few regions but are evident across the globe. 



A recent <a href="https://www.stanford.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford</a> study sheds light on the profound impact of rising temperatures and air dryness on essential crops such as wheat, barley, and maize. The study not only reveals the extent of the damage but also uncovers significant gaps in existing climate models.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-crop-yields-drop-as-temperatures-rise">Crop yields drop as temperatures rise</h2>



The study reveals a troubling pattern: warming and air dryness have intensified across nearly every major farming region. Some areas now endure hotter growing seasons than they’ve seen in half a century.



Grain yields are plummeting. Wheat, barley, and maize show declines of 4% to 13%, a stark contrast to what could have been without recent climate trends.



For a world dependent on these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-could-soon-talk-to-farmers-and-listen-too/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crops</a>, the implications are nothing short of alarming.



Study lead author David Lobell is the Gloria and Richard Kushel Director of Stanford's Center on Food Security and the Environment (FSE).



"There have been a lot of news stories about crop failures around the world, and often I get asked whether the impacts are happening faster than we expected," said Lobell. "That motivated a closer look at what's been happening in farms around the world."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-predicting-agricultural-impacts">Predicting agricultural impacts</h2>



Despite the growing evidence of crop stress, the study highlights two critical ways that existing climate models have failed to accurately predict the magnitude of the impact. 



In many cases, the models did not fully account for the extent of warming and drying that agricultural regions would <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pests-are-moving-to-cooler-regions-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">experience</a>. This has led to discrepancies between predicted and observed outcomes, leaving farmers and policymakers underprepared.



"In many ways, the changes farmers are experiencing are completely in line with what climate models predicted, so the overall impact should not be a surprise," said study co-author Stefania Di Tommaso, a research data analyst at FSE. 



Yet, there were unexpected twists in the data that revealed significant oversights in climate projections.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-severe-drying-in-europe-and-china-nbsp">Severe drying in Europe and China&nbsp;</h2>



One of the most surprising findings of the study was the extent of drying in temperate zones like Europe and China. 



These regions, typically characterized by moderate climates, are now experiencing far greater levels of air dryness than projected. In contrast, U.S. farms, particularly those in the Midwest, have faced less intense warming and drying than anticipated.



"These two big surprises are important to resolve," said Di Tommaso. "Of all the uncertainties in climate models, these are the two big ones that matter for global food production." 



The implications of these unexpected findings are significant, not only for understanding current crop losses but also for planning future <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/critical-food-crops-are-threatened-by-rising-temperatures-globally/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">agricultural strategies</a>.

Some scientists believed that rising carbon dioxide could mitigate crop yield losses caused by climate change.

The takeaway? Any carbon dioxide gains are being drowned out by heat and drought, complicating efforts to project future yields and demanding strategies that extend beyond carbon-focused solutions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-past-strategies-miss-the-mark">Past strategies miss the mark</h2>



For decades, researchers have recommended extending growing seasons by adopting longer-maturing crop varieties. 



However, the study indicates that such strategies may now be less effective, given the extent of air dryness and heat stress in many regions. Longer growing seasons could increase vulnerability to drought and temperature spikes, potentially negating the intended benefits.



Lobell and his team argue that the surprising gaps in climate models must be addressed to refine agricultural strategies and mitigate future risks. 



"If anything, I think the blind spots have been on specialized crops where we don't have as much modeling, but which are very salient to consumers," Lobell noted.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-need-for-improved-adaptation-strategies">Need for improved adaptation strategies</h2>



The need for more accurate climate models extends beyond predicting crop losses. It also affects how farmers prepare for future growing seasons. Adaptation strategies based on outdated or incomplete models may inadvertently place farmers in greater peril.

Accurate modeling would provide a more comprehensive view of the risks and inform better agricultural planning. This is particularly urgent given the potential for even greater climate variability in the years ahead.

The stakes are particularly high when considering the potential impact on global food security. While the study focuses on major grains, the implications extend to a range of specialized crops that are vital to regional economies. 



"That includes things like coffee, cocoa, oranges, and olives. All these have been seeing supply challenges and price increases. These matter less for food security but may be more eye-catching for consumers who might not otherwise care about climate change," Lobell said.



This focus on consumer goods underscores the complex ripple effects of agricultural losses. A decline in coffee or cocoa yields may not cause widespread hunger, but it can disrupt livelihoods and trigger price spikes that resonate through supply chains.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-market-disruptions-and-real-world-impact">Market disruptions and real-world impact</h2>



Lobell emphasizes that even seemingly small percentage losses in crop yields can have profound consequences. 



"I think when people hear 5%, they tend to think it's a small number. But then you live through it and see it's enough to shift markets. We're talking about enough food for hundreds of millions of people," he said.



This sentiment highlights the need for both greater public awareness and more nuanced communication about the scale and implications of crop losses. It also suggests that policymakers and farmers must work together to implement effective strategies that can withstand more frequent and severe climatic shocks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-call-for-more-accurate-models">A call for more accurate models</h2>



The study concludes with a call for more comprehensive climate models that can account for unexpected drying patterns in temperate zones and other under-researched regions. 



This would not only improve predictions but also inform better adaptation strategies, especially for specialized crops that remain underrepresented in current research.



"Overall, I think climate science has done a remarkable job of anticipating global impacts on the main grains, and we should continue to rely on this science to guide policy decisions," Lobell stated. 



The study’s findings underscore a critical need: climate projections must be refined, not just to predict crop losses but to craft effective, targeted strategies for protecting the global food supply.



What happens next? That depends on how quickly researchers and policymakers address the flaws in existing climate models. The stakes couldn’t be higher - a manageable agricultural future or a catastrophic food crisis.

Unexpected climate changes hit crop yields harder than predicted

The world has been experiencing increasingly frequent hot weather and...

Space weather rarely makes headlines, but on May 10, 2024, it became impossible to ignore. That day, a powerful geomagnetic storm battered Earth, disrupting satellites, power grids, and navigation systems.



Named for space weather physicist <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2024SW004016" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jennifer Gannon</a>, the storm revealed hidden vulnerabilities and exposed Earth to phenomena previously considered rare.



Scientists now pore over data that was collected during the storm, as they uncover insights that could reshape our understanding of space weather.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-drill-turns-into-disaster">Drill turns into disaster</h2>



A year ago, NASA and over 30 U.S. government agencies gathered for a training exercise. Their mission was to simulate the effects of a geomagnetic storm and assess weaknesses in existing systems.



"The plan was to run through a hypothetical scenario, finding where our existing processes worked and where they needed improvement," said Jamie Favors, NASA’s <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/heliophysics/focus-areas/space-weather/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Space Weather</a> program director.



As the exercise unfolded, a real geomagnetic storm struck Earth, transforming the drill into a full-scale response effort. The Gannon storm, a G5-class geomagnetic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/solar-storm-triggered-stunning-auroras-worldwide-october-11-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">event</a>, became the strongest of its kind in over two decades. Suddenly, the simulation became real - and the consequences were severe.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geomagnetic-storm-disrupted-power-grids">Geomagnetic storm disrupted power grids</h2>



The Gannon storm unleashed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/auroras-and-severe-solar-storms-will-continue-through-tomorrow/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chaos</a> on Earth’s surface. Electrical grids faced sudden surges as high-voltage lines tripped and transformers overheated. 



In the U.S. Midwest, GPS-guided tractors veered off course, compounding problems for farmers who were already battling heavy rains.



"Not all farms were affected but those that were lost on average about $17,000 per farm," noted Terry Griffin, a professor of agricultural economics at <a href="https://www.k-state.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kansas State University</a>.



Airlines scrambled to reroute transatlantic flights, prioritizing safety as radiation levels spiked. Meanwhile, in the thermosphere, temperatures rocketed to over 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit. Winds howled as nitrogen particles surged higher, driven by intense solar energy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-storm-drags-satellites-down">Storm drags satellites down</h2>



In orbit, satellites battled rising atmospheric drag. NASA’s ICESat-2 plummeted in altitude, while CIRBE - a CubeSat tasked with radiation monitoring - prematurely deorbited. The European Space Agency’s Sentinel mission faced power shortages and had to burn fuel to stay in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/widest-high-resolution-photo-of-the-sun-ever-captured-solar-orbiter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">orbit</a>.



The ionosphere, Earth’s charged upper atmosphere, shifted dramatically during the geomagnetic storm. A dense band of particles, typically found over the equator, drifted toward the South Pole, creating a vast gap over the equator.



Communication systems stuttered, as signals struggled to traverse the altered ionospheric landscape.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-energy-from-geomagnetic-storms">Energy from geomagnetic storms</h2>



In the magnetosphere, chaos reigned.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/mms/overview/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA’s MMS</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nasa.gov/artemisprogram" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">THEMIS-ARTEMIS</a>&nbsp;missions recorded massive particle waves crashing against the magnetosphere’s edge. These waves dumped unprecedented magnetic energy, generating the strongest electrical currents in two decades.



Solar particles punched through, creating two new belts of high-energy particles. CIRBE’s REPTile-2 instrument identified the new radiation belts, sandwiched between the Van Allen Belts. 



The belts teemed with high-energy electrons and protons, endangering satellites and space missions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-storm-creates-radiation-zones">Storm creates radiation zones</h2>



Before the storm, CIRBE’s REPTile-2 recorded minimal particle activity in the region around L = 2.5–3.5. Afterward, the space became a dense belt of electrons with energies ranging from 1.3 to 5 MeV. 



This new belt lingered for weeks, challenging assumptions about particle behavior during geomagnetic storms on Earth.



CIRBE also detected a proton belt at L = 2, where protons ranging from 6.8 to 20 MeV congregated. 



The proton belt remained undisturbed by subsequent storms, suggesting a unique stability. While the electron belt dissipated during a magnetic storm on June 28, the proton belt endured.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-data-from-geomagnetic-storms">Data from geomagnetic storms</h2>



REPTile-2’s high-resolution data provided an unprecedented view of the radiation belts. Before the storm, the region around L = 2.5–3.5 remained relatively quiet. Afterward, it morphed into a bustling zone of 1.3 to 5 MeV electrons, forming a distinct belt.



The electrons persisted, resisting scattering mechanisms that typically deplete such high-energy particles. Unlike lower-energy electrons, these particles seemed impervious to the usual wave-particle interactions - potentially indicating new dimensions in space weather physics.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rare-auroras-light-the-sky">Rare auroras light the sky</h2>



On Earth, auroras appeared in unexpected locations. The Aurorasaurus project received thousands of reports from 55 countries, including sightings in Japan. There, auroras glowed magenta instead of the usual red.



Josh Pettit of NASA’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Goddard Space Flight Center </a>commented on the event. "It typically needs some special circumstances, like we saw last May. A very unique event indeed."



Researchers traced the magenta hue to a blend of red and blue auroras. Oxygen and nitrogen molecules, lofted higher than usual, produced the striking colors as they collided with solar particles.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-radiation-hits-the-red-planet">Radiation hits the Red Planet</h2>



Mars bore the brunt of the Gannon storm. NASA’s MAVEN orbiter watched auroras rippling across the Martian surface between May 14 and 20, 2024. These auroras, unlike those on Earth, engulfed the entire planet.



NASA’s 2001 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massive-solar-storm-auroras-strikes-mars-nasa-spacecraft-record-it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars Odyssey</a> orbiter lost its star camera for nearly an hour, as it became overwhelmed by solar particles. 



On the surface, the Curiosity rover recorded the highest radiation surge since its 2012 landing. Solar particles peppered the rover’s cameras, producing streaks and specks reminiscent of cosmic snow.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-unyielding-proton-belt">The unyielding proton belt</h2>



While the electron belt decayed after June 28, the proton belt persisted. REPTile-2 data showed proton levels exceeding 6.8 MeV, a rare and dangerous concentration. Protons in this belt remained stable, suggesting minimal loss to collisional processes.



For spacecraft in geostationary transfer orbits, this proton belt poses significant risks. Spacecraft must pass through the Van Allen Belts multiple times, potentially encountering lethal radiation levels. 



Further analysis is needed to assess the long-term impact on satellite systems and electronic components.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-space-weather-risks-rise">Space weather risks rise</h2>



A year after the Gannon storm, researchers still analyze the data. CIRBE’s REPTile-2 instrument continues to provide critical insights, and shed light on space weather dynamics and radiation belt formation.



The electron and proton belts identified after the storm present a rare opportunity to study long-term space weather effects. As the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/widest-high-resolution-photo-of-the-sun-ever-captured-solar-orbiter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sun</a> approaches a period of heightened activity, the need for effective space weather monitoring grows more urgent.



Future missions must prioritize high-resolution data collection and real-time monitoring to detect and mitigate such events. The Gannon storm served as a wake-up call, highlighting the need for preparedness as solar activity intensifies.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preparing-for-geomagnetic-storms">Preparing for geomagnetic storms</h2>



Earth’s magnetic defenses faced a formidable test during the Gannon storm. Satellites lost altitude, communication systems faltered, and auroras danced in unexpected skies. 



Meanwhile, newly formed radiation belts lingered in space, posing ongoing threats to spacecraft.



The lessons from the Gannon storm are clear: space weather monitoring systems must evolve to detect and respond to emerging threats. As solar activity increases, future storms may prove even more intense.



For now, the new radiation belts remain a stark reminder of the Sun’s unpredictable power.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes the first comprehensive estimate of carbon density in the Saharan, Sahel, and Sudanian zones of Africa. In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. 



"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

According to ESA, Lesotho is the only nation in the world that lies completely above 1,000 m in elevation. The country is famous for its tall mountains and narrow valleys, and is known as Africa's "Kingdom in the Sky."



Out of a population of around two million people, about 80 percent live in rural areas. More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;



ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently.

"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Wetlands are a major source of methane emissions

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="http://www.ntu.edu.sg/">NTU Singapore</a> reveals that some plants can remove toxic heavy metals from soil.&nbsp;



The researchers analyzed samples of various tropical plant species to test for levels of heavy metals and metalloids. The study showed that there are existing plants with high levels of these contaminants, which means that these species are great candidates for drawing pollutants out of the soil.&nbsp;



Among the plants examined in the study, 12 species had accumulated several types of heavy metals and metalloids. These plants are widely available, including species that are native to Singapore.



“In a small nation like Singapore, land may be repurposed to support new development plans, so it is important that we have a green and sustainable way to remediate land that is contaminated," said Professor Lam Yeng Ming.



"We set out to uncover how to better make use of tropical plants to do phytoremediation and through advanced characterization techniques, we showed how some of these tropical plant species can be an environmentally friendly and literally a 'green' way to remove contaminants in soil."&nbsp;



"Phytoremediation also has benefits of cost effectiveness, simplicity of management, aesthetic advantages, and long-term applicability and sustainability. The strategy prevents erosion and metal leaching by stabilizing or accumulating heavy metals, so that helps reduce the risk of contaminant spread.”

Over the past few decades, dozens of species of weeds have evolved resistance to glyphosate. Depending on the site of action, the part of the plant that an herbicide interacts with, weeds may even be resistant to herbicides that have not been developed yet.&nbsp;



With increasing resistance to glyphosate and other herbicides, weeds are - once again - becoming a major concern for farmers.&nbsp;

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/">NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory</a> (JPL) describes a dust storm on Mars that was nearly twice the size of the United States. As the storm covered the southern hemisphere of the planet, some of NASA’s explorers had to delay their normal activities.



NASA’s Insight lander put itself in a "safe mode" for 11 days to conserve battery power because solar power was disrupted by the dust. The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter postponed flights until conditions improved.



"A fleet of NASA orbiters monitor Martian dust storms like this one and serve as lifelines to Earth by relaying data from the rovers and lander on the ground back to the team. This includes the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, MAVEN, and Odyssey," reports JPL.



"Dust storms like this recent one start close to the ground and are spread by wind as they rise – warming the cold Martian atmosphere."



The images in the video were captured by NASA’s Curiosity as the dust rolled in. A fleet of orbiters monitored the dust storm from above, relaying data from Mars’ explorers back to scientists on Earth.

NASA monitors giant dust storms on Mars

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="http://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. This strait provides the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean.



Qeshm is separated from the Iranian coast by the Clarence Strait, also known as Khuran.&nbsp;The Hara Forest Protected Area is a network of shallow waterways and forest located between the island and the mainland. This protected region is home to sea turtles, snakes, and more than 150 species of migrating birds.



Qeshm is famous for its wide range of&nbsp;ecotourist&nbsp;attractions, such as the&nbsp;Hara marine forests. According to environmentalists, about 1.5 percent of the world birds and 25 percent of Iran's native <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/female-hummingbirds-avoid-sexual-harassment-by-looking-like-males/">birds</a> annually migrate to the forests, which are the first national geo park in Iran.



Tourists are also drawn to the island to see an age-old Portuguese&nbsp;fort, historic mosques, the&nbsp;Seyyed Mozaffar&nbsp;and&nbsp;Bibi Maryam&nbsp;shrines, and the "Valley of Stars."



The average temperature on the island is 81 degress and the region is often hot and humid. From June to August, the island is described as being oppressively hot. The ideal time to visit is during the winter season.

"Inhambane Bay is a deep inlet into which the small Mutamba River flows," says ESA. "On one side of the bay lies the historical city of Inhambane, capital of the Inhambane Province, while the sister city of Maxixe, the economic capital of Inhambane, sits across from it. The province is the second largest grower of cashews, after Nampula, and it also produces coconut and citrus fruits."



The beaches of Barra and Tofo are popular with tourists. There are also coral reefs along the long coastline of Inhambane, making it an ideal destination for scuba diving and snorkeling.



"Mozambique’s extensive coastline heightens the country’s vulnerability to tropical cyclones that develop in the Indian Ocean as well as storm surge flooding," says ESA.



"More than half of the population lives in low lying coastal areas, putting communities at risk. Inhambane Bay was dangerously close to where Cyclone Idai made landfall in 2019 causing widespread destruction to the country."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency </a>&nbsp;features the Kangerlussuaq Glacier, one of the largest tidewater outlet glaciers in Greenland. The glacier is located on the east coast of the Greenland ice sheet.



As human-induced climate change continues to drive up temperatures, global ice loss is accelerating at an alarming rate. ESA reports that, over the past decade alone, 3.5 trillion tons of ice have melted from the Greenland ice sheet. This is enough to cover the UK with meltwater 15 meters deep.



Based on satellite imagery, researchers determined that Kangerlussuaq entered a new phase of rapid retreat and acceleration in 2017. In their study, published in <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/feart.2019.00123/full">Frontiers in Earth Science</a>,&nbsp; the experts report that the glacier's ice front is now at its most retreated position since the early 20th century.



"Given Kangerlussuaq’s previous impacts on both the magnitude and pattern of ice sheet wide mass loss, we predict that its new phase of retreat, acceleration and thinning will markedly enhance the south-east region’s contribution to increasing discharge from the ice sheet," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;&nbsp;



"More broadly, accurate forecasting of the ice sheet’s contribution to sea level rise will require a deeper understanding of, and responses to, these non-linear ice dynamic processes."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes the complex relationship between ocean and climate. ESA's Climate Change Initiative will help us understand how oceans influence the climate and how climate change is impacting the oceans.&nbsp;



"Earth’s oceans are huge heat stores, soaking up 93% of the excess heat from human activity over the past 70 years. Ocean currents redistribute heat around the planet, from the Equator to the poles. Where this ocean heat goes influences weather patterns and regional climate," explains ESA.



"As well as absorbing heat, oceans are a natural carbon sink, absorbing a quarter of carbon dioxide emissions from human activity. This has led to the acidification of ocean water, threating marine life."



The amount of heat and carbon dioxide soaked up by the ocean depends on specific variables, including phytoplankton, temperatures, waves, salinity, and ice cover. Satellites can be used to measure these variables from space.



"From their unique vantage point, satellites provide key information for understanding the complexities of our planet and monitoring environmental issues," says ESA.

Ocean heat influences regional climate

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes the importance of monitoring the shape of the sea surface, which is constantly changing. These observations have many applications, such as ship routing, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-modem-ocean-is-a-tough-place-for-whales-to-survive/">ocean</a> current forecasting, and debris tracking.



"A project supported by the Discovery element of ESA’s Basic Activities recently investigated a new technique to measure sea surface topography very precisely," reports ESA.



"The technique involves looking at satellite navigation (GNSS) signals that have been reflected off of the sea surface at very low angles. At these so-called grazing angles, waves and surface roughness have very little impact on the reflection process; the sea surface acts as a very smooth mirror."



Estel Cardellach is the principal investigator at the Institute for Space Studies of Catalonia, who first submitted the idea for the project.



“In a mirror-like reflection the phase of the signal can be tracked – it is continuous," said Cardellach. "Different surface heights result in different phase measurements. It gives a very precise measurement of the surface altitude at a few centimetres’ precision.”



The researchers developed a GNSS receiver and set up an experiment in the Balaeric Islands to collect signals from the receiver that were reflected off the sea surface. Ultimately, these signals will provide improved measurements of the shape of the sea surface.
