Cannabis remains the most used illicit drug on the planet, with an estimated 219 million adults consuming it in <a href="https://www.unodc.org/res/WDR-2023/WDR23_Exsum_fin_DP.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2023</a>.



A fresh report from Switzerland now suggests that giving existing users a safe, legal supply may trim the edge off risky habits rather than encourage them. The findings come from the six‑month Weed Care randomized trial run in Basel.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-taking-cannabis-into-pharmacies">Taking cannabis into pharmacies</h2>



Switzerland still bans recreational sales of cannabis nationwide. 



Basel, however, received a federal waiver on January 30, 2023, allowing 189 adult volunteers to buy measured, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-extract-cbd-proven-highly-effective-at-killing-mosquitoes/">contaminant‑free flower</a> or hash in nine pharmacies, while a matched control group kept using street sources.



The design mirrors real‑world retail but strips out slick marketing, price wars, and high‑potency gimmicks that dominate some commercial markets. 



Investigators registered every legal purchase and offered brief counseling at the counter. Keeping over‑the‑counter talk focused on lower‑risk use also echoes <a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/drugs-medication/cannabis/resources/lower-risk-cannabis-use-guidelines.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Canada’s public‑health model</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-use-problematic">What makes use “problematic”</h2>



Researchers tracked changes with the Cannabis Use Disorders Identification <a href="https://wellness.caltech.edu/documents/18162/CUDIT.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Test–Revised</a>, a short checklist of behaviors that signal harm, even when full <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32485547/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cannabis use disorder</a> is absent. 



Heavy users face up to a one‑in‑three lifetime risk of that disorder, according to a meta‑analysis of 21 cohort studies.



Scores above 13 suggest dependency, but smaller shifts still matter. Cutting just two points on the scale is considered clinically meaningful and can translate into fewer missed obligations, less time chasing the drug, and lower tolerance.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-numbers-favor-legal-cannabis">Early numbers favor legal cannabis</h2>



“There has never been a controlled, randomized study like this before,” said Baltes‑Flückiger, the study’s lead author.



After half a year, the legal group’s average misuse score slipped by 0.8 points, while the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-legalization-does-not-increase-youth-substance-abuse/">illegal</a> group barely budged. 



Among participants who also used other illicit drugs, the legal pathway slashed scores nearly two points, marking the threshold for a “reliable change.”



“Legal access eases the burden on consumers,” added Professor Marc Walter of the <a href="https://www.unibas.ch/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Basel</a>, underscoring that the regulated approach did not boost depression, anxiety, or psychotic symptoms at interim check‑ins.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mental-health-concerns-remain-steady">Mental health concerns remain steady</h2>



Worries that legal access might worsen mood or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/1000-adults-reveal-how-marijuana-alters-dna-methylation/">trigger psychosis</a> often dominate public hearings. 



A 2024 scoping <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38650490/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">review</a> covering 28 North American studies found mixed and mostly null links between recreational laws and psychiatric outcomes.



The Swiss data echo that broader picture: neither group showed significant shifts in depression or anxiety scales, and psychotic‑like experiences stayed flat. 



Critics may note the short follow‑up, yet the absence of early harm offers some reassurance.

Why did people juggling multiple substances respond best? 



Easy pharmacy access saved them the effort of hunting down street dealers, trimming time spent “getting, using, or recovering,” one of the test’s key items.



Reduced hustle can free attention for work, study, or family, all protective factors against escalating misuse. Counseling handed out at each sale likely helped too. 



Staff trained on Canada’s Lower‑Risk Cannabis Use Guidelines reminded buyers to favor products under 20 percent <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK563174/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tetrahydrocannabinol</a> and balance them with cannabidiol‑rich strains, choices linked to milder cognitive effects.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quiet-rebuttal-to-gateway-fears">Quiet rebuttal to gateway fears</h2>



The trial saw <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK609473/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">no uptick</a> in alcohol days or other drug use inside the legal arm, challenging the long‑held idea that a sanctioned market pulls people toward wider intoxication. 



Twenty‑four U.S. states now allow adult possession, yet nationwide surveys show flat or only modest rises in heavy use since the first state referendum in 2012.



Policy researchers often point out that the devil lies in the details. Switzerland capped monthly sales at about 0.35 ounces of pure THC, required organic cultivation, and banned all advertising. 



Those guardrails differ sharply from the profit‑driven dispensary scene common in parts of the United States and may explain the modest but positive shift.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-legal-cannabis-access">The future of legal cannabis access</h2>



All volunteers now have legal access through July 2025, giving the team a two‑year window to track long‑term patterns. 



Parallel <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2833180" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">studies</a> in Canada report slight bumps in overall consumption but, interestingly, equal or lower misuse scores after five years of legalization.



Future analyses will need to weigh market structure, potency limits, pricing models, and education campaigns. 



If results stay consistent, lawmakers elsewhere could consider legal cannabis sales through pharmacies or non‑profit social clubs as middle‑ground options between prohibition and full commercialization.



For regular consumers worried about slipping into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/smoking-cannabis-significantly-increases-the-risk-of-heart-attack/">harmful patterns</a>, the Swiss experience offers a practical lesson. 



Access to tested products, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-potency-why-you-shouldnt-trust-the-label/">honest labeling</a>, and low‑key advice can chip away at risky behavior without demanding total abstinence.



Public‑health‑oriented legalization is not a silver bullet, but it may give heavy users a safer runway to moderation.

Over the last 30 years, the Arctic has been warming at a rate that is two to three times faster than the rest of the planet. It is important for scientists to gain a better understanding of what is causing this phenomenon, known as Arctic amplification, to help mitigate and prepare for the global impacts of rising <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-temperatures-linked-to-low-quality-diets-among-children/">temperatures</a>.

"We need to improve our climate models because what's happening in the Arctic will eventually spread elsewhere," said <a href="https://www.epfl.ch/en/">EPFL</a> atmospheric scientist Julia Schmale.

"It's already affecting the climate in other parts of the northern hemisphere, as we've seen with the melting glaciers and rising sea levels in Greenland. And to develop better models, a better understanding of aerosols' role will be crucial. They have a major impact on the climate and on human health."

While Arctic warming is primarily driven by rising greenhouse gas emissions, there are other local processes that are also making significant contributions. For example, as the Arctic loses ice, the land surface also loses some of its albedo - the capacity to reflect solar radiation. 

Another regional factor that must be considered has to do with the complex interactions that take place between clouds and aerosols. According to Schmale, there is an urgent need to clarify the role of aerosol-related processes in Arctic warming.

"How albedo is affected by ice is fairly well understood - there are established maximum and minimum values, for example," said Schmale. "But when it comes to groups of aerosols, there are many variables to consider: will they reflect or absorb light, will they form a cloud, are they natural or anthropogenic, will they stay local or travel long distances, and so on. There are a lot of question marks out there, and we need to find the answers."

During several research expeditions to the North Pole, Schmale saw first-hand that the Arctic climate tends to change fastest in the winter. Since these rapid changes are taking place during periods of 24-hour darkness, they are not related to albedo.

One explanation could be that clouds present in the winter are reflecting the Earth's heat back down to the ground. The extent of this warming varies according to natural cycles, but is also influenced by the amount of aerosol in the air. This process is very complicated due to the wide range of aerosol types, as well as their varying capacities to reflect and absorb light. 

"Few observations have been made on this phenomenon because, in order to conduct research in the Arctic in the wintertime, you have to block off an icebreaker, scientists and research equipment for the entire season," said Schmale.

Going forward, weather models could be improved by accounting for all the discoveries made so far on Arctic warming.

"A major effort is needed right away, otherwise we'll always be one step behind in understanding what's going on. The observations we've already made could be used to improve our models. A wealth of information is available, but it hasn't been sorted through in the right way to establish links between the different processes. For instance, our models currently can't tell us what kinds of aerosols contribute the most to climate change, whether local or anthropogenic."

Aerosols play a mysterious yet powerful role in Arctic warming

A new study from the <a href="https://www.pik-potsdam.de/en">Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research</a> has revealed that erratic, unpredictable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/second-wave-of-covid-19-pandemic-was-driven-by-the-weather/">weather</a> slows down the economy. Through more frequent day-to-day temperature variability, climate change may have major effects on economic growth.

The researchers analyzed daily temperature changes alongside economic data from more than 1,500 regions over 40 years. They found that when the daily temperature deviates from seasonal expectations, there are negative effects on the basic components of the economy, including human health, sales, crop yields, and operational costs.

"We have known for a while that changes in annual mean temperature impacts macroeconomic growth," said study lead author Maximilian Kotz. "Yet now, for the first time, we're also able to show that day-to-day variations in temperature, i.e. short-term variability, has a substantial impact. If this variability increases by one degree Celsius, economic growth is reduced on average by 5 percentage-points."

According to study co-author Leonie Wenz, economies in low-income regions of the global South are particularly impacted. 

"We find that familiarity with temperature variations is important: Economies in Canada or Russia, where average monthly temperature varies by more than 40°C within a year, seem better prepared to cope with daily temperature fluctuations than low-latitude regions such as parts of Latin America or Southeast Asia, where seasonal temperature differences can be as small as 3°C. This is likely because farmers and small business owners have cultivated resilience against temperature variability," said Wenz.

"Furthermore, income protects against losses. Even if at similar latitude, economies in poor regions are more strongly affected when daily temperature fluctuates than their counterparts in rich regions."

The researchers looked at day-to-day temperature variability for each year between 1979 and 2018, comparing this information with the corresponding regional economic data. Overall, the team analyzed a total of 29,000 individual observations. 

"Rapid temperature variability is something completely different than long-term changes," explained study co-author Anders Levermann. "The real problem caused by a changing climate are the unexpected impacts, because they are more difficult to adapt to." 

"Farmers and other businesses around the world have started to adapt to climate change. But what if weather becomes simply more erratic and unpredictable? What we have shown is that erratic weather slows down the economy. Policy makers and industry need to take this into account when discussing the real cost of climate change."

Rapid temperature variability linked to slow economic growth

In a new report from the <a href="https://www.pik-potsdam.de/en">Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research</a>, researchers are describing how the COVID-19 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/second-wave-of-covid-19-pandemic-was-driven-by-the-weather/">pandemic</a> is accelerating the end of fossil fuel power generation. 

The pandemic is responsible for a temporary drop in CO2 emissions, as well as a reduction in coal-fired power generation that may persist beyond the coronavirus outbreak.

A team of economists based in Potsdam and Berlin analyzed the impact of COVID-19 on the energy system and investigated how the demand for electricity haa changed. 

The results of the study suggest that despite the tragedy of the pandemic, it has presented an opportunity to make the trend of decreasing coal use irreversible. According to the researchers, power sector emissions could now decline more rapidly than previously thought with the right climate policy measures.

"Coal has been hit harder by the corona crisis than other power sources - and the reason is simple," explained study lead author Christoph Bertram. "If demand for electricity drops, coal plants are usually switched off first. This is because the process of burning fuels constantly runs up costs. The plant operators have to pay for each single ton of coal."

"In contrast, renewable power sources such as wind and solar plants, once built, have significantly lower running costs - and keep on operating even if the demand is reduced."

As a result, fossil fuels were partially squeezed out of the power generation mix in 2020, and global CO2 emissions from the energy sector decreased by about seven percent. 

Across European countries, India, and the United States, monthly electricity demand declined by up to 20 percent in 2020 compared to 2019. The researchers found that monthly CO2 emissions decreased by up to 50 percent, and they estimate that these emissions will no longer reach the all-time high of 2018. 

"Due to the ongoing crisis, we expect that 2021 electricity demand will be at about 2019's levels, which, given ongoing investments into low-carbon generation means lower fossil generation than in that year," explained study co-author Gunnar Luderer. 

"As long as this clean electricity generation growth exceeds increases in electricity demand, CO2 emissions from the power sector will decline. Only if we saw unusually high demand for electricity along with surprisingly few additions of renewable power plants from 2022-2024 and beyond, fossil fuel generation would rebound to pre-pandemic levels."

The pandemic has weakened the market position of coal-fired power generation and exposed its vulnerability.

"Our research shows that investing in fossil-fueled power is not only environmentally irresponsible - it is economically very risky," said study co-author Ottmar Edenhofer. 

"In the end, it will certainly take carbon pricing to cut emissions at the required pace and stabilize our climate. Yet the impacts of the corona crisis on the power generation sector have put political leaders in a unique position: Along with additional policies such as eliminating subsidies for fossil fuels and increasing investments in wind and solar power, it is now easier than ever before to put an end to high-carbon electricity."

Childhood exposure to air pollution affects cognitive skills later in life. Exposure to air pollution in childhood has a detrimental impact on cognitive ability later in life, according to a new study from the <a href="https://www.ed.ac.uk/">University of Edinburgh</a>. The researchers found that people who are exposed to air pollution as children may experience negative changes in their thinking skills up to 60 years later.

The study was focused on the general intelligence of more than 500 individuals who participated in the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936 study. 

The experts based the analysis on tests that had been conducted when the participants were 11 years old. The individuals repeated the same test at the ages of 76 and 79.

To estimate pollution levels in early childhood, the researchers analyzed records of where the participants lived throughout their lives. 

The experts used statistical models to investigate the relationship between a person's exposure to air pollution and their thinking skills in later life. The study also accounted for relevant lifestyle factors, including socioeconomic status and smoking.

The analysis revealed that exposure to air pollution in childhood had a distinguishable association with negative cognitive changes between the ages of 11 and 70.

According to the researchers, the study shows that it is possible to estimate historical air pollution and explore how this relates to cognitive ability throughout life. They explained that these types of studies were previously limited by a lack of data on air pollution levels before the 1990s.

Dr. Tom Russ is the director of the Alzheimer Scotland Dementia Research Centre at the University of Edinburgh.

"For the first time we have shown the effect that exposure to air pollution very early in life could have on the brain many decades later," said Dr. Russ. "This is the first step towards understanding the harmful effects of air pollution on the brain and could help reduce the risk of dementia for future generations."

The researchers have been working with the Lothian Birth Cohorts since 1999 to chart how an individual's thinking skills change over the course of their lifetime.

Scientists may have just discovered the world's smallest reptiles living on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-parts-of-the-amazon-rainforest-will-thrive-in-a-warming-climate/">rainforest</a> floor in Madagascar. The tiny chameleons are so small that they fit on a human fingertip.

According to study co-author Frank Glaw, a reptile expert at the <a href="https://www.zsm.mwn.de/">Bavarian State Collection of Zoology</a> in Munich, the male and female specimens were spotted on a mountainside by a local guide during an expedition in 2012.

“You really have to get down on your knees to find them,” Glaw told <a href="https://apnews.com/">AP News</a>. “They are obviously camouflaged and they move very slowly.”

The international team of researchers from Germany and Madagascar named the species Brookesia nana, or nano-chameleon. The body of the male lizard is about 13.5 millimeters in length. This is at least 1.5 millimeters smaller than the previous record holder, another member of the Brookesia family.

Glaw explained that confirming Brookesia nana as the smallest reptile species will require finding more of them, which could take several years.

CT scans revealed that the female harbored two eggs, which confirmed that it was an adult. While the length of the male specimen was 22 millimeters from top to tail, the female is quite a bit larger, with a length of around 29 millimeters. 

The size difference among the genders may explain why the male lizard was found to have genitals that were almost one-fifth of its body size. The researchers said that the "well-developed" genitals may allow the smaller male chameleon to mate with the larger female.

The scientists recommend for Brookesia nana to be listed as critically endangered for its protection. In Madagascar, chameleons are threatened by deforestation.

"The new chameleon is only known from a degraded montane rainforest in northern Madagascar and might be threatened by extinction," wrote the study authors.

Dr. Mark Scherz was one of the experts involved in the discovery. In a blog post, he referred to Brookesia nana as "a spectacular case of extreme miniaturization." 

Dr. Scherz noted that the forests where the chameleons were found are still well connected with others across the north of the island. "So this tiny new chameleon violates the pattern of the smallest species being found on small islands. That suggests that something else is allowing/causing these chameleons to miniaturize."

Scientists at <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/">NASA</a> have taken a new approach to measure the global extent of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-reveals-carbon-cycle-trends-of-the-past-50-million-years/">carbon</a> fluctuations in forests. The research could ultimately improve carbon cycle estimates and help predict the impact of forests on future climate change. 

The researchers used data from ground reports, aerial surveys, and satellites to assess how changes in forests have impacted atmospheric CO2 levels over the past two decades.

The method used by the experts made it possible to distinguish between the contributions of various types of forest, and confirmed that tropical forests play the biggest role in global carbon fluctuations. Tropical forests not only absorb more carbon, but also release more emissions as a result of deforestation and degradation.

The researchers determined that each year from 2001 to 2019, forests collectively absorbed around 15.6 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide from Earth’s atmosphere.

Meanwhile, deforestation, fires, and other disturbances released an average of 8.1 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. 

“Forests act as a two-lane highway in the climate system,” said principal investigator Nancy Harris, who is the research director for the World Resources Institute (WRI) Forests Program. “A detailed view of where both sides are occurring - forest emissions and forest removals - adds transparency to monitoring forest-related climate policies.”

Despite standardized guidelines from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), current annual reporting of national forestry data varies according to the resources available in different countries. A lack of consistency in the data creates a significant amount of uncertainty.

“The good thing is that we know there is uncertainty and we can actually quantify it,” said study co-author Lola Fatoyinbo, a scientist at NASA Goddard. “All estimates come with an uncertainty around them, which is going to keep getting smaller and smaller as we get better datasets.”

The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI), a laser instrument on the International Space Station, records the three-dimensional structures of the world’s temperate and tropical forests. Along with other NASA missions, GEDI data will provide even more insight into the carbon removal rates of these landscapes.

Fatoyinbo, who is part of the GEDI team, explained that tree canopy profiles and global maps of aboveground biomass will be useful for making future carbon estimates.

“This is kind of a major shift in the paradigm of monitoring forests,” said study co-author Sassan Saatchi of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. 

“It brought in a new picture of where the big changes are happening, in terms of both the land surface losing carbon to the atmosphere and also absorbing carbon from the atmosphere.”

In Hawaii, bands of smooth water in the upper ocean known as surface slicks create nursery habitats for more than 100 species of commercially and ecologically important <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-history-of-a-fish-can-be-traced-through-its-eyes/">fish</a>, according to a new study. 

While it was assumed that these calm waters served as a refuge for fish, the researchers were amazed by the diversity of marine larvae they found living in the surface slicks. 

Study lead author Dr. Jonathan Whitney is a marine ecologist at NOAA and a former postdoctoral fellow at the Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR) at <a href="https://manoa.hawaii.edu/">UH Mānoa</a>. 

"We were shocked to find larvae of so many species, and even entire families of fishes, that were only found in surface slicks," said Dr. Whitney. "This suggests they are dependent on these essential habitats."

The research is shedding new light on how tiny fish larvae survive in the open ocean as they dodge predators and navigate ocean currents until they reach their adult habitats. 

For their investigation, the team conducted more than 130 plankton net tows in surface slicks and their surrounding waters along the leeward coast of Hawaii Island. 

Despite the fact that the surface slicks only covered around 8 percent of the ocean surface in the study area, they were found to contain 39 percent of the surface-dwelling larval fish. The slicks also contained more than 25 percent of the study area's zooplankton, which are eaten by larval fish, and 75 percent of the floating organic debris such as feathers and leaves.

Overall, the study revealed that larval fish densities were more than seven times higher in surface slicks compared to the surrounding waters.

The experts determined that ocean slicks serve as a nursery habitat for marine larvae of at least 112 species. The remarkable diversity of fish found in slick nurseries represents nearly 10 percent of all fish species in Hawaii, including jacks, triggerfish, mahi-mahi, crabs, and shrimp.

"These 'bioslicks' form an interconnected superhighway of rich nursery habitat that accumulate and attract tons of young fishes, along with dense concentrations of food and shelter," said Dr. Whitney. "The fact that surface slicks host such a large proportion of larvae, along with the resources they need to survive, tells us they are critical for the replenishment of adult fish populations."

According to the researchers, surface slicks play a role in maintaining healthy and resilient coral reefs. The slicks also create foraging hotspots for larval fish predators.

"These hotspots provide more food at the base of the food chain that amplifies energy up to top predators," said study co-author Dr. Jamison Gove. "This ultimately enhances fisheries and ecosystem productivity."

"In an earlier study, our surface slick mapping suggested strong along-coast connectivity of ocean habitats. In our latest study reported here, we populated those satellite-based slick maps with the billions of animals, organic debris, and microplastics that make up the slicks," said study co-author Greg Asner.

"Our findings are part of an important story forming around the role of biological surface slicks in maintaining coral reefs. The sheer biodiversity and biomass of the slicks, combined with their oceanic movement along the shore, form a superhighway for species that connects and effectively generates an interconnected, regional reef ecosystem."

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coffee-consumption-lowers-the-risk-of-prostate-cancer/">Coffee</a> and green tea consumption has been linked to a lower risk of a fatal cardiovascular events, according to a new study published by the <a href="https://www.heart.org/">American Heart Association</a>. 

The experts report that drinking green tea or coffee can reduce multiple causes of death and prevent further cardiovascular events, while daily coffee consumption can also lower the risk of heart attacks or strokes in healthy individuals.

Previous studies have focused on the heart health benefits of green tea and coffee in people without a history of cardiovascular disease. For the current investigation, researchers set out to examine the effects of green tea and coffee consumption among heart attack and stroke survivors. 

"There is a strong need for scientific evidence on the lifestyles among survivors of stroke and heart attack considering the rapidly aging population and the need to improve life expectancy following these cardiovascular events," said study co-author Dr. Hiroyasu Iso.

The experts analyzed data on more than 46,000 participants from the Japan Collaborative Cohort Study for Evaluation of Cancer Risk (JACC study), which was conducted in 45 communities across Japan. The individuals had shared information on their lifestyle, medical history, and diet. 

The participants were divided into three groups: history of stroke, history of myocardial infarction (MI), and no history of stroke or MI. Next, the researchers analyzed the amount and frequency of green tea and coffee consumption. 

According to the researchers, a typical cup of green tea contains about 3.4 ounces of liquid, while a typical cup of coffee contains about 5 ounces of liquid.

The study revealed that stroke survivors who consumed at least seven cups of green tea daily lowered their risk of all-cause mortality by approximately 62 percent compared to individuals who rarely drank green tea. 

Heart attack survivors who drank one cup of coffee per day reduced their overall risk of death by approximately 22 percent. In addition, people with no history of heart attack or stroke who consumed one or more cups of coffee per week had a 14 percent lower risk of all-cause mortality compared to those who did not drink coffee. 

The findings indicate that green tea consumption prevents further cardiovascular events, while coffee can prevent such events in healthy individuals.

"An important distinction to make is that in Japanese culture, green tea is generally prepared with water and without sugar. Additionally, coffee is prepared with water and occasionally milk and sugar," said Dr. Iso. "The healthiest way to prepare these beverages is without an unnecessary amount of added sugars."

The study is published in <a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/journal/str">Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association</a>.

Understanding how birds species live in their natural <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bumblebees-in-low-quality-habitats-are-more-susceptible-to-disease/">habitats</a> can help inform zoos on how to protect birds in captivity, according to research conducted by Dr. Paul Rose of the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a>. In addition, observations of captive birds can guide conservation strategies for birds living in the wild.

“Research into wild birds is extremely useful for furthering how birds are managed in zoos,” said Dr Rose. “For species of conservation concern, zoo professionals can be linked with field biologists to share information on how to best care for these species in captivity and how to develop and formulate conservation actions."

“We can use proxy species - those common in zoos - to develop practices for conservation that can be used for less familiar species that might be of concern and need help from information gathered through things such as captive breeding."

“Or we can promote the threats that these not-in-the-zoo species face by using the commoner species as an ambassador. We do this through my work at the Wildfowl &amp; Wetlands Trust, promoting the rarer species of flamingo that are in the wild using the commoner ones we keep in the living collection.”

The analysis was focused on the helmeted hornbill, which plays an important role in seed dispersal in pristine areas of southeastern Asian rainforests. These birds are critically endangered as a result of poaching.

While some species of large hornbill can be found in captivity, the helmeted hornbill cannot. By studying the ecological role of the helmeted hornbill in its natural habitat, zoos have been able to design enclosures that will increase chances of reproduction.

For example, experts identified the temperature and humidity range of hornbill nesting sites in the wild, where eggs are more likely to hatch. Zoos can now match these environmental conditions as closely as possible.

Zoos have also been able to guide conservation action for hornbills living in the wild by monitoring the behavior of these birds. Researchers discovered that using nest boxes enhances the quality of breeding habitats for hornbills. As a result, nest boxes have been built in areas of the helmeted hornbill’s range in Borneo.

“The effect of visitors on zoos can also help direct future research questions and increase understanding of birds under human care,” said Dr. Rose.

“Developing zoo bird exhibits to theme them around specific conservation messages can be used to promote wider understanding of the threats faced by wild birds specifically and hopefully encourage human behavior change that benefits ecosystem health.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/journal/birds">Birds</a>.

The Arctic Ocean was filled with freshwater at least twice in the last 150,000 years, according to a new study from the <a href="https://www.awi.de/en/">Alfred Wegener Institute</a>. The experts report that the Arctic Ocean, as well as the Nordic Seas, did not contain salt during two separate glacial periods.

The researchers determined that these oceans were filled with large amounts of freshwater under shelf ice that was up to 900 meters thick. The water could be released into the North Atlantic in very short periods of time. 

The study has revealed that the floating parts of the northern ice sheets covered large parts of the Arctic Ocean in the past 150,000 years. During two time periods, freshwater accumulated under the ice, which transformed the Arctic Ocean for thousands of years.

"These results mean a real change to our understanding of the Arctic Ocean in glacial climates," said study first author Dr. Walter Geibert. "To our knowledge, this is the first time that a complete freshening of the Arctic Ocean and the Nordic Seas has been considered - happening not just once, but twice."

According to Dr. Geibert, the decay of naturally occurring uranium always results in the production of the isotope thorium-230 when water is salty. "This substance accumulates at the sea floor, where it remains detectable for a very long time due to its half-life of 75,000 years."

"Here, its repeated and widespread absence is the giveaway that reveals to us what happened. According to our knowledge, the only reasonable explanation for this pattern is that the Arctic Ocean was filled with freshwater twice in its younger history - in frozen and liquid form,"explained Dr. Jutta Wollenburg.

A range of past climate fluctuations could be explained by the existence of enormous amounts of freshwater stored in the Arctic Ocean that were available for rapid release.

"The remains of coral reefs have pointed to a somewhat higher sea level in certain cold periods than reconstructions from Antarctic ice cores, or reconstructions from the calcareous shells of small marine organisms, would suggest," said Dr. Geibert. 

"If we now accept that freshwater may not only have been stored in solid form on land, but some of it also in liquid form in the ocean, the different sea level reconstructions agree better and we can reconcile the location of the coral reefs with calculations of the freshwater budget."

Freshwater release from the Arctic may also be responsible for certain climate change events during the last glacial period, when temperatures in Greenland would abruptly rise by 8-10 degree centigrade within a few years.

"We see an example here of a past Arctic climate tipping point of the Earth system," said Dr. Geibert. "Now we need to investigate in more detail how these processes were interconnected, and evaluate how this new concept of the Arctic Ocean helps in closing further gaps in our knowledge, in particular in view of the risks of manmade climate change."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/">Nature</a>.

Climate change may have directly contributed to the emergence of SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, according to a new study from the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge</a>. The alarming research has revealed that climate-driven forest growth in Southern China now supports dozens of additional bat species, along with 100 more types of coronaviruses.

"The fact that climate change can accelerate the transmission of wildlife pathogens to humans should be an urgent wake-up call to reduce global emissions," said Professor Camilo Mora of <a href="https://manoa.hawaii.edu/">UH Manoa</a>, who initiated the project.

The findings represent the first evidence of a mechanism that links climate change to the pandemic. The experts report that large-scale changes in the vegetation across southern China have created the perfect environment for bats to thrive in. 

Rising levels of atmospheric CO2 and higher temperatures have transformed tropical shrubland into deciduous forest, which is the most suitable habitat for bats. 

In any given area, the number of coronaviruses present is closely linked to the number of bat species nearby. The experts discovered that an additional 40 bat species have moved into the southern Chinese Yunnan province in the past century, harboring around 100 more types of bat-borne coronaviruses. Genetic data suggests that SARS-CoV-2 originated in this global hotspot.

"Climate change over the last century has made the habitat in the southern Chinese Yunnan province suitable for more bat species," said study first author Dr. Robert Beyer. "Understanding how the global distribution of bat species has shifted as a result of climate change may be an important step in reconstructing the origin of the COVID-19 outbreak."

For their investigation, the researchers created a map of the world's vegetation as it was a century ago. Next, they analyzed the global distribution of bat species in the early 1900s. By comparing this to current distributions, the experts could derive how the number of bat species  changed across the globe over the last century due to climate change.

"As climate change altered habitats, species left some areas and moved into others - taking their viruses with them. This not only altered the regions where viruses are present, but most likely allowed for new interactions between animals and viruses, causing more harmful viruses to be transmitted or evolve," said Dr. Beyer.

Each bat species harbors an average of 2.7 coronaviruses, while the world's bat population carries around 3,000 different coronaviruses. A climate-driven increase in bat species in any region also increases the chances that a coronavirus could be introduced to humans in that area. 

While most coronaviruses carried by bats cannot jump into humans, there are now three such deadly viruses that have, including Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) CoV, and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) CoV-1 and CoV-2.

The researchers found that climate change has also increased the number of bat species living in Central Africa, and in parts of Central and South America.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.journals.elsevier.com/science-of-the-total-environment">Science of the Total Environment</a>.

A gene that is linked to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) plays a critically important role in the memorization skills of songbirds. Researchers at <a href="https://www.utsouthwestern.edu/">UT Southwestern</a> found that deactivating this gene prevented <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/birdsong-frequency-is-influenced-by-sexual-selection/">birds</a> from being able to memorize their fathers' unique songs.

The findings are shedding new light on speech and language deficiencies that often accompany autism, and may ultimately lead to improved treatments.

Study lead author Dr. Todd Roberts explained that the vocalizations which are a central part of human communication are relatively unique among the animal world - not just for their complexity, but in the way they are passed down from caregivers to offspring. 

Among songbirds like zebra finches, songs are passed along from fathers to male offspring. Similar to humans, the birds have neural circuitry that is dedicated to this learning process in a region of the brain that is referred to as the high vocal center.(HVC).

Dr. Roberts said that because of the parallels between song learning in birds and language learning in humans, songbirds are often used as a scientific model for understanding speech development in people.

The researchers studied zebra finches to investigate the role of a gene called FoxP1, a gene that is closely related to ASD. Mutations of this gene cause a subtype of autism that is characterized by severe language impairment.

According to Dr. Roberts, learning vocalizations consists of two different stages: forming a memory of sounds and then practicing the sounds through imitation. Juvenile zebra finches practice their fathers' song thousands of times a day over three months. They rehearse the song tens of thousands of times until it is a close match. 

To investigate the role FoxP1 in this learning process, the researchers separated young zebra finches into two groups. Half the birds spent their early lives in contact with their singing fathers and lived together with them while they practiced their songs. The other half spent their early lives with their mothers and later joined their fathers during the practice phase. 

The experts used a technique called RNA interference to deactivate FoxP1 in the HVC of some of the birds. The experiment revealed that once the birds reached adulthood, only those with active FoxP1 during the song memorization phase were able to accurately reproduce their fathers' songs. If FoxP1 was deactivated before memorization, the birds sang songs that did not share any resemblance with the tunes sang by their fathers.

"Our results suggest that FoxP1 is key for forming the song memories in these birds that are critical for imitation later in life," said Dr. Roberts. "A similar deficit in humans could play a parallel role in speech development, blocking babies from forming memories of adult speech they hear around them and hindering their own communication as they grow."

If this finding is reinforced in future studies, it could lead to new types of therapy for children with autism, noted Dr. Roberts.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

'The weather of Santiago resembles the Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (from October to March) and cool and humid winters that can drop to 0°C (from April to September)."



"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."



The <a href="https://mapoftheuniverse.net/">interactive map</a> is available online, where it can be downloaded for free.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes the first comprehensive estimate of carbon density in the Saharan, Sahel, and Sudanian zones of Africa. In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. 



"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Dublin, the capital and largest city of Ireland. Beyond its pub culture, Dublin is known as a modern culinary destination and a UNESCO City of Literature.



"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the province of Zaragoza in northeast Spain. The image was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.



"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> features a visual dataset of.methane emissions from wetlands across the globe. Atmospheric methane levels have reached record highs in recent years, and wetlands are a major source of these emissions.&nbsp;



"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.stowers.org/">Stowers Institute for Medical Research</a> describes why experts are studying zebrafish to gain a better understanding of how the immune system responds to injury. Zebrafish have the ability to repair and regenerate organs.



“Organ regeneration offers an exciting opportunity for studying the immune system and to inquire why some species can regenerate organs like the heart or missing limbs while others like humans cannot,” explained Dr. Tatjana Piotrowski.



Zebrafish sensory organ hair cells are an ideal system to investigate the pathways and cell types involved in regeneration since they are easily destroyed with antibiotics and begin regenerating within five hours. This enabled the researchers to identify the exact timing and genetic programs for each anti-inflammatory macrophage activation state.&nbsp;



“Our hypothesis is that human macrophages do not receive the proper chemical activation 'cocktail' to instruct pro-regenerative processes,” said Dr. Nicolas Denans. “Identifying the molecular recipe of macrophage activation in zebrafish may one day enable us to design regenerative immunotherapies in humans.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



“The new evidence is a valuable resource for comparative studies on the genetic programs involved in macrophage-mediated repair and regeneration. In other words, different types of injuries may induce different kinds of inflammatory responses. We want to decipher whether this 'language' is universal or if there are a variety of dialects."

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."
