Grains feed billions every day. Yet people still argue about which ones deserve a spot on the plate. Whole grains often get praise. Refined grains often get the blame. The truth, as a new study shows, is more complicated.



Researchers looked at more than 14,000 Americans and tracked what they ate. They used national survey data collected between 2017 and 2023, combining diet records with health markers such as weight, waist size, and insulin levels.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-analyzing-different-grains">Analyzing different grains</h2>



The team came from the <a href="https://www.washington.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Washington</a> and a French nutrition group. They used national survey data collected between 2017 and 2023. They combined diet records with health markers such as weight, waist size, and insulin levels. 



The study also considered cost - an issue that often keeps families from choosing healthier foods. By linking <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mind-diet-may-protect-cognitive-health/">nutrition scores</a> with affordability, the researchers could see not only which foods improved health but also which ones people could realistically buy.



This practical lens matters, because guidance that ignores price often fails in everyday life, leaving healthier choices out of reach for many households.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoring-nutrients-in-grains">Scoring nutrients in grains</h2>



The researchers built scoring systems. One focused on whole grain content, fiber, and added sugar. Another measured nine nutrients we need - such as protein, folate, and magnesium - against three we should limit: sugar, sodium, and saturated fat.



Foods that performed well were tagged as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/common-food-nutrition-labels-may-be-based-on-50-year-old-data/">healthy</a> grains, while those lacking balance fell short. 



This dual approach gave a sharper view, showing not just which grains are wholesome, but also why certain fortified foods deserve recognition alongside traditional whole grain options.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-grains-with-strong-nutrients">Grains with strong nutrients</h2>



Cooked grains did well. So did cooked cereals and fortified grains in breads. Some ready-to-eat cereals also scored high, but only when sugar stayed low. 



Sweet bakery goods, snack bars, and quick breads landed at the bottom. They offered calories but almost no nutrients, highlighting how certain popular items fill stomachs without delivering meaningful health benefits.



The contrast between fortified choices and sugar-heavy products shows why nutrient density, not just grain type, makes the real difference in improving diets.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-eating-patterns-matter">Eating patterns matter</h2>



The study showed who eats these grains. Women and older adults ate more of them. Mexican Americans included them often too. Non-Hispanic Black participants ate the least.



Income made a difference: higher income groups leaned toward healthier grain choices. Regional differences also appeared, with some communities relying more on fortified breads and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/childrens-cereals-now-contain-more-sugar-and-fat-than-ever/">cereals</a>. 



Still, even the best groups ate less than one-third of their grains from nutrient-dense foods, showing plenty of room for improvement.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-grains-better-nutrition">More grains, better nutrition</h2>



Those who ate more healthy grains had better overall diets. They consumed more fruits and vegetables. They cut down on added sugar, sodium, and saturated fat. 



They also got more protein, calcium, potassium, and iron. These benefits grew stronger the more healthy grains people ate.



The gains extended to health outcomes. Adults eating nutrient-rich grains were less likely to have higher body weight. Their insulin levels were lower, indicating stronger metabolic health. Their cholesterol levels also improved in some cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-healthy-grains-don-t-cost-more">Healthy grains don’t cost more</h2>



Nutritious foods often cost more, but that assumption did not hold here. Healthy grains were not more expensive than less nutritious ones. In some cases, fortified cereals and breads even cost less per gram or per calorie.



“Healthy grains are a critical component of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-break-down-the-best-heart-healthy-diets/">healthy diets</a>," said Dr. Adam Drewnowski, Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Washington.



“Our evaluation took whole grain content into account, along with fiber, vitamins and minerals. By delivering key nutrients such as fiber, iron, B vitamins and folate, grain foods can make a meaningful contribution to healthier eating patterns among all population groups.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nutrients-matter-more-than-labels">Nutrients matter more than labels</h2>



This study shows that grain choices are not black and white. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/that-whole-wheat-bread-youve-been-eating-is-often-a-trap-its-not-what-you-think-it-is/">Whole grains</a> matter, but fortified refined grains can also help. What counts is nutrient density. That shift in perspective makes it easier for people to build healthier diets without higher costs or strict rules.



Grains will remain central to our diets. Choosing nutrient-dense ones - whether whole or fortified - can improve health without draining wallets. Balance matters more than rigid categories, and the study makes that clear. 



Eating patterns shaped by variety and affordability work better long term. Rather than avoiding entire grain types, people can focus on smarter selections, building meals that deliver taste, nutrition, and practicality without unnecessary restrictions.

For the first time, experts have managed to quantify the volume of marine sediments that were remobilized by the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake and transported to the Japan Trench, a submarine trench that is more than 8,000 meters deep in the North Pacific Ocean. The study produced evidence of a surprising link between earthquakes and the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/carbon-cycle-driven-seafloor/">carbon cycle</a>. 

The research, which was led by geologists at the <a href="https://www.uibk.ac.at/index.html.en">University of Innsbruck</a>, was based on samples and data collected during several offshore research expeditions between 2012 and 2016. The team estimated that a total carbon mass of more than 1 teragram (Tg), or one million metric tons, was released by this single tectonic event into the depths of the water. 

“The results surprised us and our colleagues,” said study co-author Tobias Schwestermann. “This is much higher than expected from carbon fluxes observed in other deep-sea trench systems worldwide.”

The team carried out high-resolution bathymetric surveys, conducted sub-seafloor structure imaging, and collected new sediment cores from the Japan Trench to analyze carbon content. The findings highlight the importance of the carbon cycle in the deep sea. 

“The results show that when we talk about the global carbon cycle, we also have to think about the deepest and most-underexplored deep-sea trenches of our world's oceans in the future,” said Professor Michael Strasser.


Study co-author Arata Kioka added, “All in all, the deep sea is arguably even less explored than the moon. This is exactly what fascinates us.”

The study represents the first trench-wide quantification of organic carbon mass at such depths in the ocean. This was made possible by the use of some measurement techniques that had never been attempted in the deep sea. “One of the research vessels, the German Sonne, was also decisive for the results. It is one of the technically best equipped research vessels currently available,” said Kioka.

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://www.nature.com/scientificreports">Scientific Reports</a>.

Surprising link discovered between earthquakes and the carbon cycle

A team of neuroscientists at <a href="https://www.med.emory.edu/">Emory University School of Medicine</a> has found a focal pathway in the brain that makes people feel calm and happy when it is electrically stimulated. According to the experts, the technique is a “potentially transformative” way to keep patients relaxed during awake brain surgery.

The researchers determined that direct electrical stimulation of the cingulum bundle, a prominent white matter tract in the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/space-changes-brain/">brain</a>, caused immediate laughter followed by a sense of calm and happiness. After this behavior was observed in an epilepsy patient who was being monitored for seizures, the stimulation was strategically used again to keep the patient relaxed during brain surgery.

“Even well-prepared patients may panic during awake surgery, which can be dangerous,” said study lead author Dr. Kelly Bijanki. “This particular patient was especially prone to it because of moderate baseline anxiety. And upon waking from global anesthesia, she did indeed begin to panic.” 

“When we turned on her cingulum stimulation, she immediately reported feeling happy and relaxed, told jokes about her family, and was able to tolerate the awake procedure successfully.”


The cingulum bundle is located under the cortex and curves around the midbrain, with a shape resembling a girdle or a belt. Study senior author Dr. Jon Willie explained that this region was a logical target because it connects many brain regions that coordinate complex emotional responses. The experts noted that the area which regulated laughter and relaxation is located at the top and front of the cingulum bundle.

"The patient described the experience as pleasant and relaxing and completely unlike any component of her typical seizure or aura,” wrote the researchers. “She reported an involuntary urge to laugh that began at the onset of stimulation and evolved into a pleasant, relaxed feeling over the course of a few seconds of stimulation.”

While further research is needed, Dr. Bijanki said that the cingulum bundle could ultimately become a new target for brain stimulation therapies to address anxiety, mood, and pain disorders.

The study is published in the <a href="https://www.jci.org/">Journal of Clinical Investigation</a>.

Brain stimulation could help patients feel calm during surgery

The <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/earths-magnetic-field-nearly-collapsed/">magnetic north pole</a> has been shifting so quickly that the <a href="https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geomag/WMM/DoDWMM.shtml">World Magnetic Model</a> (WMM), which maps the current position of the magnetic field every five years, had to be updated by NOAA scientists almost a year early. The new model shows that the magnetic north pole is moving away from the Canadian Arctic toward Siberia at a rate of around 34 miles per year.

While the geographic north pole is in a fixed location, the Earth's magnetic field is constantly shifting. This can cause problems for many consumer devices that have built-in digital compasses such as smartphones and digital cameras. According to the <a href="https://www.noaa.gov/">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration</a> (NOAA), the WMM is now pre-installed in Android and iOS devices, which means it is used in more than a billion devices around the world.

NOAA geophysicist Arnaud Chulliat, the lead author of the newly-issued WMM, pointed out that airplanes and boats rely on magnetic north, usually for backup navigation. The WMM is also used by the military, NASA, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the U.S. Forest Service.


Since the magnetic north pole was first measured in 1831, it has moved about 1,400 miles across the Canadian Arctic. The rate of its movement increased from about 9 miles per year in 2000 to 34 miles per year by 2019.

The dynamics of the magnetic field are caused by changes of the fluid flow in the Earth's outer core. Daniel Lathrop, a geophysicist at the University of Maryland, explained to <a href="http://time.com/">Time Magazine</a> that there is a hot liquid ocean of iron and nickel in the planet’s core where the motion generates an electric field. “It has changes akin to weather,” said Lathrop. “We might just call it magnetic weather.”

As Earth’s magnetic field gets weaker, experts predict that it will eventually flip, with the north and south pole changing polarity. “It’s not a question of if it’s going to reverse, the question is when it’s going to reverse,” Lathrop told Time.

This transition would not be instant, but would happen gradually over thousands of years. The magnetic poles have reversed many times in Earth's history, but this has not happened in 780,000 years. The main concern of scientists, however, is that the magnetic field may continue to weaken, which could potentially expose the planet to dangerous radiation.

Awareness and acceptance of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/transgender-brains-match-gender/">transgenderism</a> have grown exponentially in the last decade. <a href="https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/research/how-many-adults-identify-as-transgender-in-the-united-states/">Perhaps .6%</a> of the population in the United States is believed to be transgender, per recent estimates. Organizations vary in their preferred terminology for this phenomenon. The feeling that one really belongs to the opposite gender is also called gender dysphoria and gender incongruence. 

Many, if not most, people have a passing familiarity with gender affirmation surgeries designed to more closely align the anatomy of trans people with their asserted gender—vaginoplasty, breast implants, and facial feminization in male to female (MTF) transsexuals, phalloplasty and mastectomy in female to male (FTM) transsexuals. Less widely understood are the hormone regimens used to modify the physiology of patients presenting with dysphoria. These drug protocols, endorsed for adults by such organizations as the <a href="https://www.ama-assn.org/delivering-care/population-care/ama-takes-several-actions-supporting-transgender-patients">American Medical Association</a>, the <a href="https://www.psychiatry.org/File%20Library/Psychiatrists/...and.../rd2012_GID.pdf">American Psychiatric Association</a>, and the <a href="https://www.apa.org/practice/guidelines/transgender.pdf">American Psychological Association</a>, vary between patients due to a range of factors, including age and desired results. What follows is a general primer on what these drugs are and how they affect the human body.

Treatment protocols have evolved significantly since the first synthetic sex hormones became available in the 1930s. Current regimens are aimed at safely altering both primary sex characteristics, specifically the genitalia, and secondary sex characteristics, such as the presence of hair, breast tissue, muscle tone, and the distribution of body fat. Regimens designed for men wishing to transition to women are modified from those used in menopausal and post-menopausal natal women. Regimens designed for women wishing to transition to men are adapted from those used in natal men who present with hypogonadism—the failure of the testes to produce sufficient amounts of sex hormones. 

These drugs modify the amount of the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen in the body, either by directly introducing hormones of the opposite sex or blocking or suppressing the production of native hormones. Both natal women and natal men produce both hormones, though estrogen is dominant in females and testosterone is dominant in males. Estrogen is produced by the ovaries and testosterone is produced by the testes, as well as by the adrenal glands. These hormones are responsible for the development of secondary sex characteristics. Because cross-sex hormones, when taken medically to alter these characteristics, have serious effects, they must be administered by a knowledgeable medical professional. Drugs obtained on the black market may be contaminated or improperly formulated and thus pose substantial risks to those taking them.

Transgender women who undergo cross-sex hormone therapy typically take drugs from one of three groups. Many are prescribed “off-label”—that is, they are usually prescribed for other conditions. Nearly all trans women who undergo hormone replacement therapy (HRT) take some form of estrogen. Estradiol may be administered orally, as a gel, or through a transdermal patch. Parenteral estradiol valerate is injected. These are the hormones that facilitate breast growth, redistribute fat, lessen the growth of body hair, sometimes reverse alopecia (pattern baldness) to an extent, reduce muscle tone, and soften skin texture. They also shrink the penis and testicles. One study showed that <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24165564">libido was decreased in 62.4%</a> of trans women studied. Most trans women also have fewer erections and reduced ejaculate. 

While these hormones do suppress androgen—male hormone—production to an extent, unless the patient has had an orchidectomy—removal of the testicles—testosterone is still produced at appreciable levels and so testosterone blockers, or antiandrogens, are frequently administered as well. Spironolactone is the strongest of these; it simply blocks the action of testosterone. Dutasteride and finasteride stop the production of dihydro-testosterone. Other drugs used to suppress the production of testosterone include goserelin and leuprorelin. These belong to a class of drugs known as gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists, which stop the release of the hormones that initiate sex hormone production by acting on the pituitary gland. 

The third group of drugs, progestogens, in the form of natural progesterone or synthetic progestin, is taken by some trans women because it occurs naturally in natal women and is thought by some to enhance breast development and a general sense of well-being. This is contentious and many doctors advise against it; it is typically converted into testosterone in the body. The changes effected by all of these drugs are slow, and maximum effect is observed after 2-3 years and sometimes longer. Larger doses are not more effective and may in fact be dangerous. Most trans women will be on hormones for life, though some later choose to reduce their dosage, especially after surgery that removes the gonads.

Trans men usually take testosterone by injection, either subcutaneously or intramuscularly. Testosterone enanthate, testosterone cypionate, and testosterone undecanoate are common forms. There are also pellets that can be inserted under the skin, where they slowly release testosterone into the body. And gels and oral formulations are also available. Some trans men also take GnRH agonists to suppress the effects of estrogen if they have not undergone a hysterectomy. After three months, a number of changes are facilitated by administration of these drugs. Menstruation usually ceases, body hair begins to sprout in typically male places such as the face and chest, fat distribution may change to some extent, muscle mass increases, and the voice deepens. Some trans men develop acne. The clitoris enlarges and many report substantial increases in libido. Trans men are usually on hormones for life as well.

A number of recent studies (<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5226129/">2015</a>, <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5182227/">2016</a>, and <a href="https://www.maturitas.org/article/S0378-5122(17)30705-3/fulltext">2018</a>) have found that, by and large, when administered by a properly trained doctor, hormones are safe and effective methods of alleviating gender dysphoria and providing an improved quality of life to patients. There are nonetheless a number of well-established side effects. Sterility is all but a certainty in trans women and is not uncommon in trans men. And relatively mild side effects such as headaches and hot flashes are often reported. However, more-significant and life-threatening medical problems have been noted in at least some patients as well. While studies have typically focused on relatively small sample groups and more research is needed to fully establish their prevalence, these consequences of HRT are nonetheless noteworthy. 

Perhaps the most commonly noted adverse effects have been cardiovascular and appear to be largely restricted to trans women. They may be on the decline, however, as one drug known to cause them, ethinyl estradiol, is no longer prescribed. Further, these instances have to some extent been correlated to other factors, such as smoking and long periods of immobility, as when a trans woman is recovering from gender confirmation surgery. Studies from <a href="http://annals.org/aim/article-abstract/2645553/cardiovascular-disease-among-transgender-adults-receiving-hormone-therapy-narrative-review?doi=10.7326%2fM17-0577">2017</a> and <a href="http://annals.org/aim/article-abstract/2687653/cross-sex-hormones-acute-cardiovascular-events-transgender-persons-cohort-study">2018</a> did find evidence that venous thromboembolism (VTE), a blood clot that forms in the extremities, was more common in trans women on estrogen. The 2018 study also found evidence of increased risk of ischemic stroke. <a href="http://clinchem.aaccjnls.org/content/65/1/57">A 2019 study</a>, though it noted some incidence of VTE in trans women, was less conclusive. <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs11154-018-9454-3">Another 2018 study</a> found increased risk of heart attack in trans women. <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3029513/">Several cases</a> of pituitary prolactinomas, a benign tumor of the pituitary gland, have been reported in trans women on estrogen. Patients with a family history of estrogen-sensitive cancer are advised to inform their doctors. <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28945851">Osteopenia</a> and <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23369987">osteoporosis</a>, both conditions marked by loss of bone density, have also been noted in some trans women.

Cardiovascular symptoms do not appear to be as pronounced in trans men, though some studies have found fluctuations in cholesterol and triglyceride levels that might negatively impact cardiovascular health. Though <a href="https://academic.oup.com/humrep/article/22/4/1011/696190">some studies</a> have suggested that exposure to testosterone may induce polycystic ovary syndrome, <a href="https://academic.oup.com/humrep/article/28/2/453/596664">more recent ones</a> have found that not to be the case. Trans men have also developed <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5796953/">polycythemia</a>, or the overproduction of red blood cells.

More controversial has been the administration of puberty blockers in the form of GnRH agonists, as well as hormone therapy, to children presenting with gender dysphoria. Because the long-term effects of puberty blockers are unknown, and the best-studied patient populations are restricted to children who receive them due to undergoing early puberty, the ethics of this practice are the subject of intense debate. Proponents claim that the benefits of stopping puberty allow children time to explore their identity, and if they do affirm that they are transgender, their transition will be easier. However, opponents cite the fact that <a href="https://www.thecut.com/2016/07/whats-missing-from-the-conversation-about-transgender-kids.html">most studies</a> of gender dysphoria in children have shown high rates of desistance, or a return to comfort with their assigned gender. It is known that puberty blockers do reduce bone density, though this is typically reversed when they are stopped. And the effect of blocking sex hormones on neurological development is not understood. Further, the administration of cross-sex hormones over the majority of a person’s lifespan is completely unprecedented, leaving the possibility of unknown complications down the line. A <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4807860/">large-scale study</a> by the National Institute of Health initiated in 2016 aims to resolve some of these questions.

Much remains to be learned about HRT and its consequences. What is certain is that, at least in adults, it has proven to have undeniably positive effects on the lives of members of a vulnerable and poorly-understood population.

How hormone replacement affects the bodies of transgender individuals

An island in the South Pacific that emerged after a volcanic eruption in 2015 is now home to hundreds of tropical birds known as sooty terns. The island is also covered in flowering plants whose seeds were likely scattered around in bird droppings.

The island is the result of an <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/underwater-volcanoes-tasmania/">underwater volcano eruption</a> that spewed ash and lava into the sea for weeks. When the ash mixed with warm ocean water, it solidified into rocks that ultimately formed the island.

The volcanic rocks accumulated in between two existing islands in the Kingdom of Tonga. While it has not been officially named, locals call the new island Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai after the two small islands that it joins.


<a href="http://nasa.gov">NASA</a> wants to study the island before it is potentially washed away into the sea. Dan Slayback, a research scientist at the Goddard Space Flight Center, recently visited Hunga Tonga with other experts and students. He told <a href="https://blogs.nasa.gov/earthexpeditions/2019/01/30/land-ho-visiting-a-young-island/">NASA Earth Expeditions</a>: “We were all like giddy school children. Most of it is this black gravel, I won’t call it sand - pea sized gravel - and we’re mostly wearing sandals so it’s pretty painful because it gets under your foot.”

“Immediately I kind of noticed it wasn’t quite as flat as it seems from satellite. It’s pretty flat, but there’s still some gradients and the gravels have formed some cool patterns from the wave action.”

The team took pictures, collected rock samples, and used a drone to obtain an aerial survey of Hunga Tonga. According to the researchers, data obtained during the trip may shed new light on rare volcanic islands. 

“The island is eroding by rainfall much more quickly than I’d imagined,” said Slayback. “We were focused on the erosion on the south coast where the waves are crashing down, which is going on. It’s just that the whole island is going down, too. It’s another aspect that’s made very clear when you’re standing in front of these huge erosion gullies. Okay, this wasn’t here three years ago, and now it’s two meters deep.”

However, there is no way to know how long the island will last, and further research is needed to explore the possibility that hydrothermal processes may be ongoing that could make the land resistant to erosion for decades to come.

The human gastrointestinal tract is host to a vast colony of bacteria called the gut microbiome. This garden of microbes is not only key to digestive health, but studies have also found links between <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4425030/">gut flora imbalances and cancer</a>,<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gut-fungi-obesity/"> obesity</a>, diabetes, and most recently, depression. 

In one of the largest studies of its kind, researchers from Belgium are working to investigate the gut-brain connection by studying the gut flora of over 5,000 Flemish individuals from Flanders in Belgium. 

According to the researchers leading the Flemish <a href="http://www.vib.be/en/research/Pages/The%20Flemisch%20Gut%20Flora%20project.aspx">Gut Flora Project</a> and a recent study published in the journal Nature Microbiology, gut flora imbalances are linked to depression. 

For this specific study, researchers from <a href="http://www.vib.be/Pages/default.aspx">VIB</a>, a research institute in Belgium, compared stool microbiome data and diagnoses of depression in 1,054 Flemish Flora Gut Project participants. 

After analyzing the microbiomes of the individuals, the researchers found that people with depression had consistently lower levels of two types of bacteria, Coprococcus and Dialister, even if the patients were being treated with antidepressants. 

These surprising results were later confirmed when the researchers conducted an independent analysis of 1,063 participants from the <a href="https://www.lifelines.nl/researcher/biobank-lifelines/additional-studies/lifelines-deep">Dutch LifeLinesDEEP</a> study of depression patients in Belgium.

The results strongly suggest that gut health and mental health are linked, but the researchers say this is a controversial and little-studied hypothesis. 

“The notion that microbial metabolites can interact with our brain -- and thus behaviour and feelings -- is intriguing, but gut microbiome-brain communication has mostly been explored in animal models, with human research lagging behind,” said Jeroen Raes, an author of the study. “In our population-level study we identified several groups of bacteria that co-varied with human depression and quality of life across populations.”

A potential explanation for why Coprococcus and Dialister depletion is linked to depression could be that both microbes have anti-inflammatory properties and nervous system inflammation has been linked to depression. 

The researchers also examined the genomes of more than 500 bacteria to test their ability to produce neuroactive compounds which could impact activity in the brain and created the first list of neuroactivity in gut flora. 

The study lays important groundwork for future research into how gut bacteria impacts mental health. 

“Our toolbox not only allows to identify the different bacteria that could play a role in mental health conditions, but also the mechanisms potentially involved in this interaction with the host,” said Mireia Valles-Colomer, the lead author of the study.

New study finds link between gut health and depression

In a groundbreaking new study, experts have managed to grow functional mouse kidneys inside rats by using just a few stem cells. The research, which was led by the <a href="https://www.nips.ac.jp/eng/">National Institute for Physiological Sciences</a> in Japan, has significant implications for human organ transplantation.

For patients with renal disease, a kidney transplant is often the only hope for regaining quality of life or for avoiding <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/environmental-pollutants-kidney-health/">kidney failure</a>. However, a transplant is no simple matter due to a chronic shortage of donor kidneys. For example, there are currently 95,000 patients on the waiting list for a donor kidney in the United States alone.

Researchers have been working on ways to grow healthy organs outside the human body, and one particular method called blastocyst complementation has produced promising results.

“We previously used blastocyst complementation to generate rat pancreas in pancreatic mutant mice,” explained study lead author Teppei Goto. “We therefore decided to investigate whether the method could be used to generate functional kidneys, which would have much greater application in regenerative medicine owing to the high donor demand.”

The team’s first attempts to grow rat kidneys in mice were not successful because the rat stem cells did not readily differentiate into the two main types of cells needed for kidney formation. The researchers then reversed their strategy by transferring mouse stem cells into rat blastocysts, which successfully formed the basic structures of a kidney.

The complemented blastocysts were matured into normal fetuses after being implanted into pseudo-pregnant rats. Overall, more than two-thirds of the rat newborns contained a pair of kidneys derived from the mouse stem cells. Testing revealed that all of the kidneys were structurally intact, and at least half of them had the potential to produce urine.

“Our findings confirm that interspecific blastocyst complementation is a viable method for kidney generation,” said study co-author Masumi Hirabayashi. “In the future, this approach could be used to generate human stem cell-derived organs in livestock, potentially extending the lifespan and improving the quality of life of millions of people worldwide.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>.

Growing human kidneys outside of the body may be feasible

Pokémon GO, also known as an augmented reality game, is a very popular app in which a real-time camera feed is integrated with images and data to provide interactive experiences. Researchers at the <a href="https://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/index.html">University of Tokyo</a> have discovered that the game has had a positive impact on <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/physical-activity-prevent-depression/">physical activity</a> among players over 40. 

In November of 2014, the Yokohama Walking Point Program was launched in an effort to make people more active. For the program, 2,580 participants over the age of 18 were given pedometers to count the total steps they took in a day. The individuals were also surveyed through the use of location-based augmented reality games.

Using data from this program, a research team led by Kimihiro Hino selected a total of 230 participants who had as much in common as possible. Overall, 46 of the participants played Pokémon GO, while the other 184 participants did not. The experts compared the walking program outcomes of both groups and found more physical activity among those who engaged in the Pokémon game.

“Game-makers and urban planners could factor what we've learned into their respective activities,” said Hino. “I think Pokémon GO succeeds where physical activity games do not because it's a game first with potential added health benefits. It's possible such games could serve as a gateway to further people's enthusiasm for physical activity.”


The experts also hope their findings may inspire urban planners to incorporate more pedestrian areas into urban centers. Hino plans to further explore the connections between augmented reality games and their impact on physical activity, and would like to examine how these games may affect an individual's attitude toward exercise.

“Many middle-aged people grew up with computer games, but the older generation might feel shy about playing them,” said Hino. “With exercise as an excuse they may play more, thus exercise more. It's a virtuous circle. Maybe we'll see people use cars less and walk or cycle more. There's a lot of Pokémon out there to catch.”

The study is published in the <a href="https://www.jmir.org/">Journal of Medical Internet Research</a>.

Interactive games can help older adults become more physically active

Recently, I read an <a href="https://medium.com/on-madagascar/island-mentality-138045bb2d19">opinion piece</a> by a Malagasy man now living in the United States.  The man was frustrated by the widespread ignorance of Americans about his homeland – Madagascar.  His complaints are familiar to me. Other people from many other countries have said much the same to me before.  ‘How do Americans know nothing of my country?’ ‘We learn so much about the US in school.’

It’s almost a trope – the American who is severely geographically illiterate.  You see it with talk show hosts on camera with average American people who think Mt. Rushmore is in Russia.  You see it in US politicians fumbling over foreign policy questions. If you know people from Europe, Australia or other places in the world, you’ve probably heard about it yourself.  It is claimed that Americans know very little about the world. I, myself, have taken this idea in uncritically, but is it really true? How much do and don’t Americans know about the world they live in?  More importantly, why should we know about the world beyond our borders?

A <a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2015/10/16/us-students-are-terrible-at-geography">US News</a> report from 2015 paints a pretty grim picture.  The headlines read, ‘US Students are Terrible at Geography’.  Citing the 2014 National Assessment of Education, the report finds that almost 75% of American students fall short of proficiency in geography, almost the exact same results as those from 1994.  Actually, from 1994 to 2014 there were few changes, advanced proficiency in geography dropped from 4% to 3%, proficiency stayed exactly the same at 24% and basic (partial mastery) jumped 5% to 48%.  

The overall picture is the same for geography knowledge among 8th graders in the US – they are in fact terrible at geography as a whole.  A 2016 article from <a href="https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2016/09/survey-geography-foreign-relations-americans-students/">National Geographic</a> echoes the same sentiments, this time showing young college educated Americans as geographically ignorant.  The piece says that of Americans who took a survey, two-thirds couldn’t identify Indonesia as a majority Muslim nation.  Of Americans 18 to 26 years old with some college education who tool a geographic literacy test, the average was just a score of 55%.  

Many of the survey questions have relevance for US policy; questions like where US troops are stationed in the world and what countries the US is bound to protect.  The <a href="https://www.cfr.org/global-literacy-survey">survey</a> by the Council on Foreign Relations showed that only 29% of participants scored 66% or better on the test.  An early <a href="https://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2002/11/geography-survey-illiteracy/">National Geographic</a> article from 2002 proclaimed that only 17% of young Americans could find Afghanistan on a map.  Of course, that was important because even though most Americans were extremely ignorant of Afghanistan, our military was at war there.  

An article in <a href="https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/geographic-illiteracy-and-the-rise-of-trump_us_587fef14e4b0aa1c47ac280c">Huffington Post</a> from 2017 by an AP geography teacher points out that geographic illiteracy is perpetuated in the US by the education system.  History seems to be a much bigger focus in American education than current events. We learn more about World War II than any current US military engagement.  In fact, the closer we get to current events, the less the focus. We learn more about the founding of our nation than the last few decades. The former teacher wrote in Huffington Post that his class was the only one focused on current events in the entire school and this seems to be the norm.       

The real question is, are Americans unique in their geographic ignorance or are these surveys showing only a part of the picture?  A 2014 article from the <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/10640690/Americans-surveyed-misunderstood-misrepresented-or-ignorant.html">Telegraph</a> points to 2009 study that compared survey results on international affairs in current news from the US and Europeans.  In the survey, only 58% of Americans could describe the Taliban compared to 75% of Britons. Overall, Americans scored more poorly than citizens of Denmark, Finland and England.  The Telegraph article ends by citing a 2003 US Strategic Task Force of Education Abroad report that concluded US geographic ignorance is so deep and widespread that it may constitute a national security threat.

It’s easy to see a danger in the broad ignorance of the rest of the world engendered by many Americans.  After the US had been in the Iraq war for two years, 70% of Americans surveyed still thought Saddam Hussein was directly involved in the September 11 attacks, according to a <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/polls/vault/stories/data082303.htm">Washington Post</a> survey.  This disconcerting fact leads to many questions about our country’s collective ignorance on current world events. 

An opinion piece in the <a href="http://news.aag.org/2018/02/time-for-a-radical-geographic-literacy-in-trump-america/">American Association of Geographers</a> newsletter highlights the vulgar disdain which entire regions of the planet are written off by President Trump, marked as ‘shit hole countries’.  With little broad geographic familiarity, Americans are easily manipulated by such violently emotional remarks. We’ve become accustomed to a more politically divided America, we may also be moving towards a more divided world.  The cost of our ignorance is high, as now the US is heavily involved in world affairs just like always. 

Immigrants wait on the US border in Mexico, while Americans are split on what the immigrant caravan means to the US.  A <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2018/11/19/migrant-caravan-donald-trump-border-security-immigration-poll-threat-central-america-honduras/2055361002/">USA Today</a> report says that 54% of Americans think the immigrant caravan is some sort of threat to the US.  29% of Americans see the immigrant caravan as a major threat. A full 25% of Americans believe that the immigrant caravan does contain terrorists, despite there being no evidence to support this opinion.  

According to another survey from 2016 by the <a href="https://www.cfr.org/blog/how-americans-see-mexico">Council on Foreign Relations</a>, less than 25% of Americans have a positive image of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/tunnels-us-mexico-border/">Mexico</a>.  Despite declines in immigration that continue today, a majority of Americans believed illegal immigration was increasing.  Less people still believe Mexico is safe to travel in. A newer <a href="https://www.monmouth.edu/polling-institute/reports/monmouthpoll_us_111918/">survey</a> from Monmouth University carried out in 2018 found that 49% of Americans feel illegal immigration is a very serious problem.  This is despite the fact that <a href="http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018/11/28/5-facts-about-illegal-immigration-in-the-u-s/">PEW Research Center</a> shows that illegal immigrants from Mexico have declined since 2007 while immigrants from other countries have remained about the same.  

We enter a period where the US president routinely villainizes much of Latin America and refuses to take military intervention off the table in Venezuela.  President Trump constantly contradicts official opinions on North Korea, Russia, China and other nations. It seems that now more than ever, the only thing that can save us from becoming one of the masses terrorized by its own federal government is knowledge.  Knowing about the world is important, it’s where we all live.

Is American geographic illiteracy a security threat?

The Chang’e-4 lunar lander that made history as the first successful mission to land on the far side of the moon is finding temperatures colder than expected after taking a two-week nap.

Just like Earth, a day on the moon is determined by its axis and orbit around the Sun. However, where a day on Earth lasts 24 hours, time on the moon works a little differently. 

A day on the moon lasts around <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dark-vs-far-side-moon-lunar-night-science-2019-1">27 Earth days</a>, and night on the far side, the side facing away from the sun where the Change-4 probe landed, lasts a little over 14 days. This is why China’s Chang’e-4 probe went into a two-week long hibernation. 

After becoming active on Wednesday, the <a href="http://www.cnsa.gov.cn/english/index.html">China National Space Administration</a> (CSNA) reported that temperatures on the surface dropped to -310 degrees Fahrenheit during the lander’s first night on the moon. 

This was much colder than expected for the mission and far colder than previous records from the past lunar missions. 

Despite the cold temperatures, the probe, and its small rover resumed operations and are hard at work with scheduled experiments and surveys of the Von Karman Crater, according to the CSNA. 

China’s Chang’e-3 moon mission had scientific instruments well equipped to handle the cold, according to Zhang He, the executive director of the Chang'e-4 mission. 

Some of the mission’s experiments have already with met with roadblocks. When the lander first arrived on the moon, it was reported that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/china-cotton-seeds-moon/">cotton seeds had successfully sprouted inside specially designed biospheres</a>. 

It was another first for the CSNA and an important step forward in potentially setting up a lunar base which China has announced it will set up by 2036. 

However, not long after the new sprouts were photographed, it was reported that the plants had died due to the freezing cold temperatures.

While the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unstable-polar-vortex-brutal-winter/">polar vortex</a> was yesterday’s news, for much of the United States, the dead of winter means more snow, snow, ice, and more snow.

Many residents are stocking up on salt for their sidewalks, and cities keeping roads safe by sending out plows and salting the streets to prevent the snow and ice from freezing over.

Unlike the salt you would use on your sidewalk, the city trucks you see down the highways spraying the road with a salty solution are treating roads to prevent freezing rather than trying melt the ice after the fact.

It all boils down to the chemical properties of salt and how it reacts with water at its freezing point.

Julie Pollock, an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the <a href="https://www.richmond.edu/">University of Richmond</a>, explained the chemistry of road salting in a recent piece for <a href="https://theconversation.com/salt-doesnt-melt-ice-heres-how-it-actually-makes-winter-streets-safe-110870">The Conversation</a>. 

Sodium chloride (NaCl) is salt no matter which way you shake it, but the salt on the road is less pure and gets its brownish color from mineral contamination.

Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and if the ground temperature is freezing or below freezing, ice and snow will form, but salt lowers the freezing point. Salt solutions lower the freezing point to 15 degrees Fahrenheit.

But this rule will only apply if the road is pre-treated with a salt-water solution. Salt that’s dumped on the road after a blizzard won’t melt the ice unless subjected to heat from the sun and cars.

“Subjecting the environment to this salt via runoff can have some unintended consequences including negative effects on plants, aquatic animals and wetlands,” Pollock wrote. “But it’s a cheap and effective way to protect roads from ice due to a simple scientific principle: freezing point depression of solutions.”

Sand is also used to help provide friction for road traffic in colder climates where this scientific principle won’t work.

Road salt can seep into wetlands, rivers, streams, and lakes and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/freshwater-streams-polluted-salt/">pollute ecosystems</a>. Sidewalk salt can also be harmful to pets, and there are some pet-friendly options for sidewalk salt that concerned pet owners can use for their walkways.

However, some eco-friendly alternatives are being explored to replace road salt solutions, and these still use the freezing point depression principle, according to Pollock.

Some of the alternatives include brines and beet wastewater from sugar beet processing. Like salt, the sugar lowers the melting point of ice when sprayed onto the road and beet wastewater has less of a negative environmental impact. What’s more, brines, beet wastewater and even molasses additives could be effective in lower temperature climates.

These are also not without their potential consequences though, which is why some researchers are looking to replace road asphalt with solar panels in the hopes of making self-clearing roads, according to another report from <a href="https://theconversation.com/road-salt-makes-winter-driving-safer-but-what-does-it-do-to-the-environment-87860">The Conversation</a>.

How salt trucks keep roads safe… and some eco-friendly alternatives

About 15 years ago, <a href="https://www.princeton.edu/geosciences/people/simons/">Frederik Simons</a>, a professor of geosciences at <a href="https://www.princeton.edu/">Princeton University</a>, teamed up with <a href="http://www.princeton.edu/geosciences/people/display_person.xml?netid=nolet">Guust Nolet</a>, now the George J. Magee Professor of Geoscience and Geological Engineering, Emeritus. They wanted to build an undersea robot with a hydrophone in an effort to pick up sounds and therefore locate distant earthquakes. Doing so would help seismologists scan the planet’s interior.

“Imagine a radiologist forced to work with a CAT scanner that is missing two-thirds of its necessary sensors," Simons said via <a href="https://www.nature.com/srep/">Scientific Reports</a>. "Two-thirds is the fraction of the Earth that is covered by oceans and therefore lacking seismic recording stations. Such is the situation faced by seismologists attempting to sharpen their images of the inside of our planet."

Now, Simons, Nolet, and a team of international researchers have published the findings of their new seismic floats called MERMAIDs — Mobile Earthquake Recording in Marine Areas by Independent Divers.

MERMAIDs drift at about 1,500 meters below the ocean surface and travel about 2 to 3 miles per day. If and when one detects an incoming <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/oil-drilling-la-earthquake-risk/">earthquake</a>, it shoots to the surface within 95 minutes, tracks the earthquake’s location, and transmits the seismic data. Nine MERMAIDs floated freely for two years within an area of ocean around the Galápagos that was formerly “blank,” meaning no seismic information was available pre-MERMAIDs.

With the MERMAIDs, researchers found that Galápagos volcanoes are fed from source via a narrow conduit that is bringing hot rock to the surface from 1,200 miles deep within the ocean. This phenomenon is known as a “mantle plume.” Nolet notes that this high-temperature mantle plume “hints at the important role that plumes play in the mechanism that allows the Earth to keep itself warm.”

"Since the 19th century, when Lord Kelvin predicted that Earth should cool to be a dead planet within a hundred million years, geophysicists have struggled with the mystery that the Earth has kept a fairly constant temperature over more than 4.5 billion years," Nolet said. "It could have done so only if some of the original heat from its accretion, and that created since by radioactive minerals, could stay locked inside the lower mantle. But most models of the Earth predict that the mantle should be convecting vigorously and releasing this heat much more quickly.”

He continued, “These results of the Galápagos experiment point to an alternative explanation: the lower mantle may well resist convection, and instead only bring heat to the surface in the form of mantle plumes such as the ones creating Galápagos and Hawaii."

Next, the team will launch 50 MERMAIDs in the South Pacific to study the mantle plumes under Tahiti.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-contrasting-climate-response">A contrasting climate response</h2>



Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.



The full study was recently published in <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2023GL104851" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Geophysical Research Letters</a>.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.



The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.



The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.



Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.



Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.

Remember the 1980s when acid rain dominated headlines? Dire warnings about rain eating buildings, killing fish, and destroying forests filled every news cycle. Then, almost like magic, acid rain vanished from public discourse. What happened? Did we actually solve one of the late 20th century's most pressing environmental challenges?



The answer might surprise you. Unlike many environmental issues that drag on indefinitely, acid rain represents one of modern history's most successful ecological recovery stories. It's a tale of science, politics, and technology working together to tackle what seemed impossible.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What was acid rain?</h2>



Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The science behind it</h2>



Think of acid rain as nature's chemistry experiment gone wrong. These compounds react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. When mixed with water vapor in clouds, they create precipitation with dangerously low pH levels.



While clean rain has a pH of about 5.6, acid rain could drop as low as 4.2 to 4.4 – roughly as acidic as tomato juice or coffee. According to US Geological Survey documentation, Scottish chemist Angus Smith first coined "acid rain" in 1872, but it didn't become a household phrase until the 1960s and 1970s when Swedish scientist Svante Odén documented its devastating effects on Scandinavian lakes and European forests.

During the height of public concern, environmental damage was both widespread and visible. This wasn't some abstract future threat – people could see destruction happening in real-time.

The most dramatic impacts were impossible to ignore. Research documented by the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation shows that in the Adirondack Mountains, more than 200 lakes became so acidic they couldn't support fish life. The Adirondack Council reports that 409 lakes once supported brook trout, but many lost their fish populations due to acid rain.



By 1976, when scientists cataloged all acidified lakes in the Adirondack Park, researchers found that half of the lakes over 2,000 feet above sea level had no fish, according to studies published in environmental journals. The acidification process worked like a slow-motion disaster. As acid rain fell into watersheds, it gradually lowered pH levels. Fish couldn't survive in acidic water, and their food sources died off too.



Trees at high elevations showed stress directly linked to acid rain. It weakened them by leaching nutrients and making them susceptible to disease. Historical records show Germany's Black Forest saw nearly half its trees damaged by the mid-1980s.

Acid rain wasn't just environmental – it was expensive. Acidic precipitation corroded infrastructure, buildings, and monuments. Historic stone structures deteriorated at accelerated rates. Tourism suffered as lakes became fishless and forests declined. EPA economic analyses from the period documented repair costs mounting into billions annually.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing.

Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;
