<p>Rising temperatures are reshaping life in ways that go far beyond melting ice or shifting habitats. They are reaching into the most intimate biological process of all - how genes are shuffled and passed to the next generation.</p>



<p>New research shows that heat and cold can alter the genetic machinery that produces sperm and eggs in reptiles, even tilting the odds of embryos developing as one sex or the other. These subtle shifts strike at the foundation of fertility and evolutionary change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-temperature-tests-reptile-fertility">Temperature tests reptile fertility</h2>



<p>A team from the <a href="https://www.uab.cat/en/ibb" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona</a> (UAB) tested the effect in a small Madagascan lizard, the Guibé’s ground gecko. The experts tracked recombination - the exchange of DNA between paired chromosomes that fuels genetic diversity.</p>



<p>To measure this, the researchers analyzed 1,169 sperm cells from 12 male geckos kept at six different temperatures for a week. The results revealed a U-shaped response: recombination events rose at both cooler (68°F) and warmer (86°F) conditions compared to a mid-range 82°F.</p>



<p>"Our findings show the presence of hyper-CO spermatocytes in individuals exposed to both high and low temperatures," said Laura González Rodelas, lead author of the study. </p>



<p>The study also noted shorter chromosome axes and more lingering double-strand breaks at the extremes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-recombination-matters">Why recombination matters</h2>



<p>Crossover events are needed for chromosomes to separate cleanly during meiosis. Too few, or too many in the wrong places, can reduce fertility or alter which gene combinations survive.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/three-new-gecko-species-discovered-after-eight-years-of-searching/">gecko</a> study found that long chromosomes soaked up most of the extra crossovers at hot and cold settings. </p>



<p>It also detected weaker crossover interference, the spacing rule that normally keeps events apart along the synaptonemal complex.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heat-flips-reptile-chromosomes">Heat flips reptile chromosomes</h2>



<p>Some reptiles go a step further, pairing sex chromosomes with heat and cold cues, which can cause temperature-induced sex reversal under hot incubation.</p>



<p>"This is the first report of reptile sex reversal in the wild," said geneticist Clare Holleley. Her fieldwork on the Australian central bearded dragon reported male to female sex reversal in the wild at high egg temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Understanding that switch needs high quality genomes that resolve both Z and W sex <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/y-chromosome-is-disappearing-may-already-be-causing-problems-for-men/">chromosomes</a>. One study delivered a near telomere to telomere assembly from a female ZW bearded dragon.</p>



<p>Researchers created a complete, high-quality map of the bearded dragon’s genome, covering both of its sex chromosomes. </p>



<p>The team found that the genome contains about 1.75 billion DNA bases, and they were able to piece together the Z and W chromosomes in full, giving scientists a clearer view of how sex is determined in this species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mapping-reptile-sex-genes">Mapping reptile sex genes</h2>



<p>Having a full <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/genome-mapping-completed-for-dozens-of-common-animals/">genome map</a> lets researchers track genes linked to reproduction, growth, and disease. It also provides a baseline for comparing different reptiles and understanding how sex chromosomes evolve over time. </p>



<p>These insights can help identify which genes respond to environmental stress and which ones remain stable. For conservation, this kind of data can guide breeding programs and population management. </p>



<p>By knowing the genetic makeup of males and females, scientists can predict how changes in temperature might affect sex ratios in the wild, an issue that becomes more urgent as global warming accelerates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geckos-echo-plant-findings">Geckos echo plant findings</h2>



<p>A plant genetics study showed the same U-shaped recombination response in <em>Arabidopsis</em>, from a low point near 64°F to higher rates at cooler and warmer settings. </p>



<p>The pattern suggests organisms often keep recombination low in comfortable conditions, then shift upward under stress.</p>



<p>Mechanisms are still being worked out. A yeast paper connects temperature, DNA supercoiling, and weaker interference, offering one plausible route for how heat can ripple through meiotic structure.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetics-under-climate-strain">Genetics under climate strain</h2>



<p>These changes land where evolution does its work. When environments move quickly, extra recombination can speed the shuffle of gene combinations that selection can test.</p>



<p>There is a tradeoff. If crossover placement and interference are distorted for long periods, fertility and chromosome stability could suffer in some lineages.</p>



<p>For reptiles that already face <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/top-marine-predators-may-suffer-massive-habitat-loss-by-2100/">habitat loss</a> and pollution, this genetic sensitivity adds a quiet risk.  Protecting reptile nesting sites from extreme heat, shading exposed sand, and buffering water temperatures can safeguard early development.</p>



<p>Captive breeding programs can monitor incubation ranges that avoid persistent sex bias. They can also track genetic health when recombination patterns drift from physiological norms.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genes-maps-and-temperature">Genes, maps, and temperature</h2>



<p>The gecko result is not a vague <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-behavior-productivity-being-directly-impacted-by-climate-change/">climate</a> story. It rests on direct cell counts, such as the increase in crossover markers at 68°F and 86°F relative to 82°F.</p>



<p>The bearded dragon work is not only about embryos. It gives a map of the Z and W regions, including candidate sex genes, which anchors future tests of how temperature interacts with sequence.</p>

<p>Humans have marveled at fossils for centuries. Yet many people still wonder why some animals leave beautifully preserved remains, while others fade without a hint of their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-modern-fossils-will-be-the-most-surprising-to-future-explorers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">existence</a>.</p>



<p>Scientists have tackled this question head-on at the University of Lausanne (<a href="https://www.unil.ch/unil/en/home.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNIL</a>). Shortly after conducting their experiments, lead researcher Nora Corthésy emerged with fascinating <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-59372-3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">insights</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-some-animals-become-fossils">Why some animals become fossils</h2>



<p>Fossils are not just <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/largest-ever-marine-reptile-ichthyotitan-severnensis-discovered-by-11-year-old-girl/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bones</a>. They can include muscle impressions and even traces of internal organs.</p>



<p>Preservation can seem chaotic because not every creature is equally likely to become part of the rock record. </p>



<p>When Farid Saleh, Swiss National Science Foundation Ambizione Fellow at UNIL, and his team looked at why this happens, they found that the chemical properties within a carcass help determine if it will eventually fossilize.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-animals-alter-their-surroundings">Animals alter their surroundings</h2>



<p>During decay, certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shell-fossils-lapworthella-fasciculata-reveal-ancient-predator-prey-battle-517-million-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">remains</a> spark rapid changes in oxygen levels around the body. Bigger carcasses and those packed with more proteins seem to lower local oxygen supply.</p>



<p>“This means that, in nature, two animals buried side by side could have vastly different fates as fossils, simply because of differences in size or body chemistry,” said Corthésy.<br><br>“One might vanish entirely, while the other could be immortalized in stone” noted Saleh.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decaying-animals-control-fossil-formation">Decaying animals control fossil formation</h2>



<p>Some <a href="https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/1993Pbio...19..107B/abstract" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">researchers</a> have observed that proteins break down more swiftly than lipids. This quick decay can reduce oxygen around the carcass faster, shielding the body from further breakdown.</p>



<p>When oxygen is scarce, different bacteria thrive by using <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/24839" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">alternative elements</a> for energy. This sets the stage for a chemical environment that can swap original tissues with durable minerals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chemical-conditions-shape-what-endures">Chemical conditions shape what endures</h2>



<p>Scientists have linked extremely low <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-59372-3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">redox potential</a> to the formation of minerals like pyrite or calcium phosphate, which capture fine details of once-living organisms. </p>



<p>A large, protein-rich animal can slip into this state more easily, leading to a better chance of fossilization.</p>



<p>Smaller creatures that do not rapidly reduce oxygen might disappear completely. That difference could explain why many fossil <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mammals-ground-dwellers-survived-the-asteroid-impact-that-killed-the-dinosaurs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deposits</a> from hundreds of millions of years ago feature arthropods more than worms.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-soft-tissue-chemistry-and-fossil-survival">Soft tissue chemistry and fossil survival</h2>



<p>Fossilization isn’t just about having hard shells or bones. The chemical composition of soft tissues - especially the amount of protein - plays a big role in what gets preserved.</p>



<p>This shifts the focus from structure to substance. A jelly-like creature with high protein could fossilize more readily than a tougher animal low in protein, depending on how the surrounding chemistry reacts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-animals-leave-different-fossil-traces">Animals leave different fossil traces</h2>



<p>Even when animals are buried in the same spot at the same time, their bodies don’t decay the same way. A shrimp and a planarian lying inches apart can leave completely different chemical signatures in the sediment.</p>



<p>This means some fossil beds might look biased toward certain species, not because others weren’t there, but because their remains didn’t alter the environment enough to trigger fossilization.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-this-matters-for-paleontology">Why this matters for paleontology</h2>



<p>Understanding how size and body chemistry influence fossilization changes how paleontologists interpret ancient ecosystems. It helps separate the absence of fossils due to true extinction from those missing due to poor preservation.</p>



<p>This distinction matters when reconstructing evolutionary history. If some animals never had a chance to fossilize, their role in the ecosystem could be underestimated or completely overlooked.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-animals-we-ll-never-know">The animals we’ll never know</h2>



<p>Some organisms may have lived and died without leaving any physical trace behind. If their bodies decayed quickly and didn’t create the chemical conditions needed for preservation, they might have vanished entirely from the fossil record.</p>



<p>This means the fossil record isn’t a complete history - it’s more like a selective snapshot. Animals with soft bodies and low protein content, such as some early worms, may have existed in abundance, but we’ll likely never find their remains.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-fossil-formation">Understanding fossil formation</h2>



<p>Different climates and <a href="https://www.epa.gov/national-aquatic-resource-surveys/indicators-salinity" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">salinity</a> can affect how proteins and lipids degrade. There may be times when tiny animals end up preserved, but scientists believe that size and body composition often tip the odds in favor of bigger, protein-loaded species.</p>



<p>Although modern labs cannot precisely recreate ancient seabeds or swampy shorelines, today’s experiments are bringing us closer to grasping how our planet’s story is written in stone.</p>

<p>New research suggests that certain animals have a built-in way to reduce tick populations in nature. The discovery focuses on how animals develop immunity after being bitten, possibly paving the way for advanced tick vaccines.</p>



<p>The research was led by Jeb Owen, an associate professor of entomology at <a href="https://wsu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Washington State University</a>. The findings could help ranchers, wildlife managers, and families dealing with the troubles that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tick-bites-can-trigger-lifelong-red-meat-allergies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ticks</a> bring.</p>



<p>Disease concerns drive a lot of interest in what makes these arachnids flourish in some places and practically vanish in others.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fewer-ticks-mean-safer-animals">Fewer ticks mean safer animals </h2>



<p>Ticks feed on blood at different life stages and can pass infections to people, pets, and livestock. Diseases such as <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/rocky-mountain-spotted-fever/about/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rocky Mountain spotted fever</a> and <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/lyme/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lyme disease</a> hinge on tick abundance in a given setting, which has made scientists eager to find methods that bring numbers under control.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ticks-are-hitchhiking-on-birds-to-spread-diseases-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ticks</a> can also irritate cattle and wildlife. These animals lose energy when they spend time licking, scratching, or rubbing to find relief from tick bites. </p>



<p>A further complication is the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/alpha-gal-syndrome/about/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">red-meat allergy</a>, linked to certain tick species, that can trigger severe problems after eating beef or pork.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-animals-build-immunity-after-tick-bites">Animals build immunity after tick bites</h2>



<p>In this study, the scientists observed that deer mice, rabbits, and cattle gained protection once they were exposed to ticks.</p>



<p>After a first round of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/black-legged-ticks-are-naturally-repelled-by-ant-pheromones/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bites</a>, the immune system began identifying key compounds in tick saliva, resulting in a faster response during future bites.</p>



<p>The researchers noted a crucial drop in ticks that successfully fed on hosts with prior exposure. On average, 23% fewer ticks reached adulthood, and adult females produced 32% fewer larvae once a host’s defenses were active.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-immunity-reduces-ticks-across-generations">Immunity reduces ticks across generations</h2>



<p>As part of the analysis, the team used computer simulations to predict how that reduction might play out in the real world. Their model indicated that the average growth of a tick population could drop by 68% once a host community acquired resistance.</p>



<p>Such resistance was found in the lab even when only a single round of tick <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soil-bacteria-help-plants-balance-growth-and-immunity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exposure</a> had occurred. Still, major questions remain about how quickly that protection develops in nature and how long it might last if contact with ticks decreases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-some-animals-show-strong-tick-resistance">Some animals show strong tick resistance</h2>



<p>Past studies focused heavily on rodents in a lab environment, but ticks in the wild latch onto many different creatures. Cattle appeared to develop strong defenses, leading some ticks to fail at feeding or reproduce less effectively.</p>



<p>It is not just smaller animals that benefit. Larger hosts can face blood loss and general stress from persistent tick bites, so fewer successful tick feedings may carry big advantages for farm and ranch operations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hope-for-improved-vaccines">Hope for improved vaccines</h2>



<p>The data could give vaccine developers new ideas about how to spark these host responses in a controlled way. Scientists have worked on anti-tick shots for years, though most efforts center on single-host ticks that stay on one animal throughout their life cycle.</p>



<p>“Cumulatively, across the life cycle, the impacts are very large. This gives us new insight into why tick populations go up and down,” said Owen, emphasizing its broader potential.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-studies-on-immunity-triggers">Future studies on immunity triggers</h2>



<p>Even with this encouraging news, the researchers highlight the need to learn more about the exact signals that set off resistance. Current data show that <a href="https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/resource-library-abiotic-factor/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">abiotic</a> variables like temperature and humidity still play a critical role in tick survival and spread.</p>



<p>More studies may explore if a single bite can trigger protection or if it takes repeated exposure to trigger significant resistance. </p>



<p>That knowledge might clarify how often livestock need boosting, or whether wild animals can sustain protective immunity from one tick season to the next.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-animals-with-tick-resistance">Animals with tick resistance</h2>



<p>Some experts suggest that wildlife conservation efforts could include ways to enhance natural defenses in certain species. </p>



<p>It is unclear if such approaches will ever become a practical tool, but the idea has gained traction now that a range of animals seem capable of blocking ticks.</p>



<p>Others see potential for disease control, since fewer ticks mean fewer infection paths for people and animals. A next step might involve field trials that check how well these resistant responses stand up under unpredictable outdoor conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-basic-tick-safety-still-matters">Basic tick safety still matters</h2>



<p>While vaccines show promise, the usual advice still holds. Personal protection measures like wearing protective clothing and checking for ticks remain central in many parts of the United States. Keeping landscapes trimmed can also help reduce tick-friendly habitats.</p>



<p>Farmers and wildlife managers could benefit from this natural phenomenon if they find ways to promote or enhance the defense within their herds or local animal populations. The long-term impact might hinge on variables like environment, breed differences, and tick species.</p>

Animals develop natural immunity to ticks after being bitten once

<p>Mammalian sperm are unusually picky. They prefer cooler environments, thriving below normal body temperature. Yet, they must navigate the female reproductive tract, which is warmer. So how do they survive and succeed?</p>



<p>New research from <a href="https://medicine.washu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Washington University</a> School of Medicine in St. Louis explains how. Sperm use the temperature difference as a signal.</p>



<p> When they enter the warmer female reproductive tract, they switch behavior. They move from calm, forward swimming to a vigorous, whip-like thrash. This change helps them pierce the egg for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-current-fertility-rate-isnt-enough-for-human-survival/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fertilization</a>.</p>



<p>This discovery sheds light on male fertility. It also opens new directions for contraception.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heat-flips-a-sperm-switch">Heat flips a sperm switch</h2>



<p>All mammals carry a sperm-surface protein called CatSper. It regulates ion entry, powering the tail’s strong motions. Scientists found that temperatures above 38°C (100.4°F) activate this protein.</p>



<p>“That hyperactive state in sperm is key for successful fertilization, and no one knew exactly how temperature triggers it,” said Polina Lishko, PhD, professor of cell biology and physiology at WashU Medicine. </p>



<p>“Our work has identified a temperature-controlled switch in sperm that triggers these increased movements precisely when they are needed during <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-fertility-rates-are-quickly-declining-and-little-is-being-done-about-it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fertilization</a>.”</p>



<p>Before this study, CatSper was thought to respond only to pH and progesterone. But most mammalian sperm ignore progesterone. Temperature turns out to be the real switch.</p>



<p>This change explains why testicles hang outside the body. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/resveratrol-may-boost-female-fertility-naturally/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Evolution</a> keeps them cool so sperm remain inactive until they reach warmer territory - then, they activate at just the right moment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mammals-evolved-to-keep-sperm-cool">Mammals evolved to keep sperm cool</h2>



<p>Humans aren't the only species with clever cooling tricks. Dolphins pass blood through their dorsal fins to cool it before it reaches their testes. Elephants do the same through their ears. These adaptations protect the sperm’s sensitivity.</p>



<p>Birds, which lack CatSper, don’t need this. Their sperm do not rely on the same activation signal. This protein, and its temperature-based switch, is unique to mammals.</p>



<p>Using advanced tools, the researchers watched electric charges shift inside individual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/poor-semen-quality-signifies-more-than-just-fertility-problems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sperm</a>. When exposed to higher temperatures, CatSper lit up. This marked the start of vigorous movement - just in time for fertilization.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-using-heat-to-make-sperm-hyperactive">Using heat to make sperm hyperactive </h2>



<p>CatSper’s exclusive presence in sperm makes it an ideal drug target. Previous attempts to block it didn’t work well. But Lishko suggests a twist: instead of blocking it, activate it too early.</p>



<p>“Instead of creating inhibitors, it might be possible to activate CatSper with temperature thus, prematurely switching on this channel to drain the sperm of energy, so that by the time the sperm cell is ready to do its job and enter the egg cell, it is powerless,” said Lishko.</p>



<p>If successful, this method could prevent fertilization without affecting the rest of the body. It may also help men struggling with infertility by ensuring proper sperm activation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ovarian-changes-reduce-fertility">Ovarian changes reduce fertility </h2>



<p>While sperm need temperature to activate, the female reproductive system faces a different aging problem. </p>



<p>The researchers examined 62 human ovaries from donors aged 20 to 77. Using advanced gene-mapping tools, they found that different ovarian regions age at different rates.</p>



<p>The ovarian cortex, which houses immature eggs, showed signs of decline after age 40. The follicular niche - the support system for eggs - starts breaking down. In the medulla, immune activity ramps up by age 30. These changes reduce fertility well before menopause.</p>

<p>Granulosa and stromal cells showed the most dramatic aging. Fibroblasts, the builders of connective tissue, multiply in aging ovaries. They deposit fibrotic proteins that stiffen the ovarian tissue.</p>



<p>One key factor behind this fibrosis is reduced TGF-beta signaling. This pathway helps regulate repair and inflammation. Its loss leads to unchecked buildup of scar-like tissue in the ovarian cortex.</p>



<p>Over time, this damages the egg’s environment, even if some eggs remain. Fertility fades not just because of egg loss, but because the surrounding support system collapses.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-fertility-treatments">Future fertility treatments </h2>



<p>These studies together offer a broader view of fertility. In men, it’s about activation - timing sperm behavior using heat. In women, it’s about preservation - protecting the ovarian environment from early decline.</p>



<p>New therapies might target these weak points. In men, premature CatSper activation could offer safe birth control. In women, boosting TGF-beta or controlling fibrosis might preserve fertility longer.</p>



<p>Understanding both perspectives - activation and aging - could help design next-generation fertility treatments that support both partners in reproduction.</p>

<p>Mongolia’s Gobi Desert has long been a treasure trove for dinosaur fossil hunters. But every so often, it reveals a smaller, subtler wonder that shifts how we understand ancient life.</p>



<p>A recent study has revealed&nbsp;<em>Ravjaa ishiii</em>, a new mammal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mammals-ground-dwellers-survived-the-asteroid-impact-that-killed-the-dinosaurs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> from the Late Cretaceous. Unearthed in the Bayanshiree Formation of Mongolia’s Gobi Desert, this discovery expands our view of early mammalian life inland from ancient coastlines.</p>



<p>Named in honor of Dulduityn Danzanravjaa, a revered 19th-century Buddhist monk, and Kenichi Ishii, the former director of the Hayashibara Museum of Natural Sciences, this mouse-sized mammal belongs to the extinct family Zhelestidae. </p>



<p>The study, which is published in <em>Acta Palaeontologica Polonica</em>, was a collaboration between researchers from Japanese and Mongolian institutions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fossil-is-from-a-new-genus">Fossil is from a new genus</h2>



<p>During a 2019 expedition, researchers uncovered a one-centimeter partial jaw in a fluvial sandstone layer. </p>



<p>This zone, which is rich in small vertebrate remains, had previously yielded only two fragmentary <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-did-dinosaurs-come-from-missing-fossils-hold-the-secret/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mammal</a> specimens. The jaw - catalogued as MPC-M 100s/001 - showed signs of zhelestid traits, but with unique twists.</p>



<p>The molars were unusually tall, and the mandible had structural features that are not seen in other zhelestids. These differences warranted the naming of a new genus and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dinosaur-extinction-theories-are-challenged-by-new-research/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a>.</p>



<p>Its presence in inland Mongolia marks a significant shift in our understanding of zhelestid distribution.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tooth-structure-hints-at-fruit-based-diet-nbsp">Tooth structure hints at fruit-based diet&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The mammal jaw’s dental features suggest that <em>Ravjaa ishiii</em> had a robust molar structure fit for grinding seeds and fruit. </p>



<p>The new specimen's molar morphology, in particular, would support a frugivorous or omnivorous diet. Compared to other therian mammals of the period - that are mostly insectivores - <em>Ravjaa ishiii</em> shows a more herbivorous tendency. </p>



<p>This aligns with the timing of the angiosperm expansion during the Cretaceous Terrestrial Revolution (KTR). These flowering plants dramatically reshaped ecosystems because they provided new food sources that animals could exploit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fossil-features-show-it-s-a-distant-cousin">Fossil features show it’s a distant cousin</h2>



<p>A detailed phylogenetic analysis placed <em>Ravjaa ishiii</em> as the sister taxon to the Zhelestinae, a subclade within Zhelestidae. </p>



<p>It stands apart because it lacks certain skeletal features, such as the labial mandibular foramen, and it exhibits uniquely large molars relative to its jaw height.</p>



<p>This makes <em>Ravjaa ishiii</em> not just the first zhelestid found in Mongolia, but one of the most anatomically distinct. Its molar-to-jaw size ratio is the highest known in the group.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-first-mammal-jaw-of-its-kind">First mammal jaw of its kind</h2>



<p>Mongolia’s Upper Cretaceous formations, especially Djadokhta and Baruungoyot, have long been known for their rich deposits of mammal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dinosaur-fossils-reveal-hollow-bones-just-like-modern-birds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossils</a>.</p>



<p>However, these aeolian (wind-deposited) sites mostly lack zhelestids. Their dominance by multituberculates (another herbivorous group) suggested a different ecological makeup.</p>



<p>The Bayanshiree Formation, with its fluvial (river-deposited) nature, tells a different story. The increased water availability may have allowed zhelestids to thrive. Notably, no multituberculates have been found here, which hints at reduced competition.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-signs-of-plant-based-diet">Signs of plant-based diet</h2>



<p>This find may support the idea that zhelestids preferred humid conditions and possibly competed with multituberculates. Their dental adaptations reflect a dietary overlap with multituberculates, which were also mostly herbivores.</p>



<p>Their absence from more arid formations and presence in river-influenced zones strengthens this environmental preference hypothesis.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mammal-jaw-offers-a-glimpse-into-the-past">Mammal jaw offers a glimpse into the past</h2>



<p>"Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the publication process took longer than expected, but we were finally able to establish the scientific importance of this specimen," said Tsukasa Okoshi, lead author from <a href="https://www.ous.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Okayama University of Science</a>.</p>



<p>"We hope this research will serve as a starting point for further taxonomic studies of other small vertebrate fossils from the same site and era, and will ultimately help uncover the rich biodiversity - including dinosaurs - that once inhabited the Gobi Desert during the age of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/north-americas-oldest-dinosaur-is-completely-rewriting-history/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dinosaurs</a>," added Okoshi.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mammal-jaw-changes-dinosaur-era-story">Mammal jaw changes dinosaur-era story</h2>



<p>"Finding such a tiny fossil in the vast expanse of the Gobi Desert feels like a gift from the Gobi Desert. It's nothing short of miraculous," noted co-author of the study, Professor Mototaka Saneyoshi.</p>



<p>The discovery of&nbsp;<em>Ravjaa ishiii</em>&nbsp;does more than add a name to a list. It opens new directions in understanding mammalian life during a time of enormous change. The Gobi Desert, which was once a river-fed plain, is still revealing its ancient secrets - one tiny jaw at a time.</p>



<p>This find challenges long-held assumptions about mammalian habitats in the Late Cretaceous. It also highlights the importance of even the smallest fossils in piecing together Earth’s prehistoric ecosystems.</p>

Jaw fossil reveals fruit-eating mammal from the dinosaur age

<p>The Milky Way was the last thing a scientist expected to think about during a museum visit with his children. But when his daughters became fascinated by an image of a woman arched across the sky, their curiosity sparked an unexpected journey.</p>



<p>The children’s questions about the story led Dr. Or Graur deep into ancient Egyptian mythology - and possibly to a new understanding of how the Milky Way was portrayed in ancient art.</p>



<p>The research comes from the <a href="https://www.port.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Portsmouth</a>, where Dr. Graur's team explored how the Milky Way might have been represented by the ancient Egyptians.</p>



<p>The focus was on the sky-goddess Nut, a figure commonly found on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scent-of-eternity-experts-recreate-the-fragrance-of-egyptian-mummification/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Egyptian coffins</a>, and her connection to stars, the sun, and maybe even our galaxy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nut-goddess-of-the-sky">Nut: Goddess of the sky</h2>



<p>In ancient Egyptian culture, many <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/sun-gods/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gods</a> and goddesses are tied to celestial bodies. Nut (pronounced “Noot”) is one of the most important. She represents the sky and is often painted as a naked, arched woman. </p>



<p>Sometimes Nut is covered with stars or marked by sun disks, showing her role in the solar cycle. In mythology, Nut swallows the sun at night and gives birth to it again at dawn.</p>



<p>Her protective posture - arching over the Earth god Geb - is a symbol of how the sky shelters the world. On hundreds of ancient coffins, dating back as far as 5,000 years, Nut appears in this iconic pose. But not all images are the same.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-did-egyptians-paint-the-milky-way">Did Egyptians paint the Milky Way?</h2>



<p>One coffin, belonging to Nesitaudjatakhet, a chantress of Amun-Re who lived around 3,000 years ago, stands out. </p>



<p>On it, Nut’s body is crossed by a bold, wavy black line. It stretches from her feet to her hands, with stars spread evenly above and below. This unusual feature caught the scientist’s attention.</p>



<p>"I think that the undulating curve represents the Milky Way and could be a representation of the Great Rift - the dark band of dust that cuts through the Milky Way's bright band of diffused light. Comparing this depiction with a photograph of the Milky Way shows the stark similarity," explained Dr. Graur, professor of astrophysics at the University of Portsmouth.</p>



<p>This curved design isn’t isolated to one coffin. Similar lines can be seen in several other tombs.</p>



<p>"Similar undulating curves appear in four tombs in the Valley of the Kings. In the tomb of Ramesses VI, for example, the ceiling of the burial chamber is split between the Book of the Day and the Book of the Night," noted Dr. Graur. </p>



<p>"Both include arched figures of Nut displayed back-to-back and separated by thick, golden undulating curves that issue from the base of Nut's head and travel above her back all the way to her rear."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nut-is-not-the-milky-way">Nut is not the Milky Way</h2>



<p>Despite the visual similarity, Dr. Graur doesn’t believe Nut is a direct stand-in for the Milky Way. The curve is rare in Egyptian <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/visual-art-evokes-many-feelings-and-emotions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">art</a>, and that, he believes, is significant.</p>



<p>"I did not see a similar undulating curve in any of the other cosmological representations of Nut and it is my view that the rarity of this curve reinforces the conclusion I reached in a study of ancient texts last year, which is that although there is a connection between Nut and the Milky Way, the two are not one and the same," explained Dr. Graur.</p>



<p>"Nut is not a representation of the Milky Way. Instead, the Milky Way, along with the sun and the stars, is one more celestial phenomenon that can decorate Nut's body in her role as the sky."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-visualizing-the-sky-goddess">Visualizing the sky goddess</h2>



<p>In a previous study, published in April 2024, Dr. Graur examined ancient texts like the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/egypts-pyramids-were-built-along-a-buried-branch-of-the-nile-river/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pyramid</a> Texts, the Coffin Texts, and the Book of Nut. He compared them with simulations of the night sky to argue that the Milky Way might have drawn attention to Nut’s role in the heavens.</p>



<p>According to this view, the galaxy’s arc might have highlighted Nut’s arms during the winter and traced her spine during the summer. But after studying more visual depictions, the picture began to change.</p>



<p>"The texts, on their own, suggested one way to think about the link between Nut and the Milky Way. Analyzing her visual depictions on coffins and tomb murals added a new dimension that, quite literally, painted a different picture."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-egyptians-depiction-of-the-milky-way">Egyptians' depiction of the Milky Way </h2>



<p>The work is part of a larger project studying the mythology of the Milky Way across cultures. And it all began with a family outing.</p>



<p>"I chanced upon the sky-goddess Nut when I was writing a book on galaxies and looking into the mythology of the Milky Way. My interest was piqued after a visit to a museum with my daughters, where they were enchanted by the image of an arched woman and kept asking to hear stories about her," said Dr. Graur.</p>



<p>What started as a curious moment with children turned into a new way of thinking about how people once looked at the night sky. </p>



<p>For the ancient <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mystery-how-ancient-egyptians-built-pyramids-djoser-may-be-solved/">Egyptians</a>, it seems the Milky Way may have been more than just a band of light - it was another stroke in the sky goddess's painted body, a bridge between myth and stars.</p>

Ancient Egyptians may have seen their goddess in the Milky Way

The Milky Way was the last thing a scientist expected...

<p>Ants are everywhere - underfoot, under leaves, and under-appreciated. While often overlooked, these tiny insects carry immense ecological weight. Their roles go far beyond scavenging crumbs at a picnic. Each ant species contributes uniquely to keeping ecosystems alive.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-many-ants-live-on-earth-at-any-point-in-time-total-number-is-astounding/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ants</a> aerate soil, disperse seeds, control pests, and interact with plants in complex mutualisms. They are vital to the everyday operations of ecosystems around the world.</p>



<p>A recent study published in <em>Nature Ecology &amp; Evolution</em> puts ants at the center of an ecological experiment with far-reaching implications. </p>



<p>Led by scientists from the <a href="https://www.uwa.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Western Australia</a>, <a href="https://www.csiro.au/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CSIRO</a>, and James Cook University (JCU), the study investigated what happens when dominant ant species are removed from their environment.</p>



<p>The findings offer insight into the resilience of natural systems - but also a warning. While nature compensates, it may be doing so at a cost few can see coming.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nature-has-backup-ant-species">Nature has backup ant species</h2>



<p>When the researchers removed three common ant species - <em>Iridomyrmex purpureus</em>, <em>Pheidole ampla perthensis</em>, and <em>Tetramorium impressum</em> - they expected a drop in ecosystem performance. These ants were key players in their local environment, handling everything from seed dispersal to scavenging.</p>



<p>Yet the ecosystem didn’t grind to a halt. Other ants stepped in, taking over the roles of the removed species. "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dirt-ants-were-once-masters-of-disguise-in-the-caribbean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Insects</a> are everywhere and some people question what all these species do in ecosystems," said study lead author and <a href="https://www.jcu.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JCU</a> entomologist Dr. Peter Yeeles.</p>



<p>"Here, the research is showing that they provide a built-in redundancy that allows ecosystems to absorb shocks."</p>



<p>"Think of them like pieces of scaffolding. Remove one, or a few, and the structure still stands because each part offers a degree of redundancy to the other parts. Redundancy makes systems resilient. Without it, even small disturbances can cause big collapses."</p>



<p>The researchers observed that species richness increased in plots where dominant ants were suppressed. That increase contributed to higher overall multifunctionality. </p>



<p>This phenomenon, called functional redundancy, refers to the presence of species that perform similar ecological roles. If one species declines, others can maintain the system by doing the same job.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ants-fill-gaps-but-bring-new-risks">Ants fill gaps, but bring new risks</h2>



<p>While the results initially appeared positive, a deeper look revealed hidden fragilities. The shift in species dynamics introduced new risks. As rare <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ants-perform-life-saving-amputation-surgeries-on-injured-nest-mates/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> filled the gaps, they brought with them specialization and less flexibility.</p>



<p>"Losing the common species can be like replacing a few reliable generalists with a team of specialists," explained Dr. Yeeles.</p>



<p>"You might maintain performance, but you also increase the risk if one of them goes missing. With so much reliance on specific roles, losing any more species could cause much greater ecosystem damage than before."</p>



<p>This change from generalist to specialist reliance may make ecosystems more efficient in the short term, but it reduces their capacity to recover from additional shocks. The safety net, once thick with backup options, becomes thinner with each lost species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-some-ant-species-boost-functions">Some ant species boost functions</h2>



<p>The experts tested four ant-driven <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-destabilizing-ant-plant-relationships/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecosystem</a> functions: granivory (seed eating), scavenging, plant protection, and myrmecochory (seed dispersal via ants). The researchers used experimental plots in southwestern Australia to measure how these functions changed when dominant ants were removed.</p>



<p>Interestingly, some functions improved in suppression plots. Granivory rates increased, and species richness was associated with better multifunctional performance. </p>



<p>But this came with caveats. For example, the function of plant protection significantly decreased, despite higher species richness. This was linked to the removal of ants known to deter herbivores on plants.</p>



<p>Contrasting effects on different functions revealed that gains in one area could mean losses in another. The balance of ecological tasks - what scientists call “multifunctionality” - became harder to maintain uniformly.</p>



<p>As functions became more dependent on fewer species, the entire system became more sensitive to further disruptions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-ant-species-step-up">Hidden ant species step up </h2>



<p>Another key finding of the study was that some ant species, previously minor players, became more ecologically important after dominant species were removed. These ants, once held back by competition, increased in abundance and performance. In some cases, they even enhanced specific functions.</p>



<p>This shift, however, was not random. Ants that had performed poorly in the presence of dominant species showed the greatest functional improvement in suppression zones. </p>



<p>According to the researchers, this suggests that the removed species had been suppressing the potential of the broader community. While the community as a whole stepped up, its structure was now fundamentally different — and more sensitive to future changes.</p>



<p>The phenomenon aligns with the concept of “low multifunctional redundancy.” In this view, species may overlap in one function but diverge in others. For example, an ant that disperses seeds may not be as good at scavenging. </p>



<p>Once the generalists disappear, specialists can't always substitute across tasks. That leaves ecosystems reliant on unique species combinations that might be hard to replace.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ants-as-ecosystem-engineers">Ants as ecosystem engineers</h2>



<p>"It is easy to forget how important ants are in the majority of terrestrial ecosystems. They're often referred to as ecosystem engineers because they have such profound effects on the ecosystems they live in," said Dr. Yeeles.</p>



<p>"Some ant species are granivores, meaning they eat seeds, so they regulate plant communities."</p>



<p>"For example, in an agricultural setting, ants consume weed seeds, providing free weed control services. They're also important for soil structure as they dig and increase soil porosity to allow water infiltration. The list goes on."</p>



<p>The study reinforces just how wide-reaching ant functions can be. Their activities influence plant growth, soil health, and nutrient cycling. Remove a key species, and subtle shifts occur that cascade through the ecosystem. </p>



<p>These shifts may go unnoticed at first, but they accumulate over time, reshaping entire habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-at-the-bigger-picture">Looking at the bigger picture</h2>



<p>"Globally, scientists are increasingly concerned about dramatic declines in insect populations, including many once-common species," Dr. Yeeles warned.</p>



<p>"We must act now to protect not only rare species, but also the everyday insects that quietly keep our world running."</p>



<p>The study serves as a wake-up call. Biodiversity loss is not just about rare or exotic creatures disappearing. It includes the steady erosion of common, hard-working species that form the foundation of ecosystem services. </p>



<p>These services - pollination, pest control, soil fertility - directly affect human food systems, clean water, and climate resilience.</p>



<p>This research moves the conversation beyond simply counting species. It asks us to consider what each species does, how they interact, and what happens when we take their presence for granted. Dominant ants are not just background characters. They are the gears of a complex biological machine.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-losing-ant-species-weakens-ecosystems">Losing ant species weakens ecosystems</h2>



<p>The study provides both hope and caution. Yes, ecosystems show an impressive ability to rebound when disrupted. But compensation is not the same as recovery. Each adjustment comes with trade-offs and increased fragility. Functional redundancy acts like insurance - but only up to a point.</p>



<p>As we continue to alter landscapes and apply pesticides, we must recognize the quiet work of ants and other insects. Protecting biodiversity means safeguarding not only the rare but also the reliable. </p>



<p>For nature to keep running smoothly, it needs all its workers - especially the ones we rarely notice.</p>

<p>Researchers investigating a type of virus that was once dismissed as a side note have shown that it may be hiding everywhere. They found that this so-called “curiosity” virus is no small player but instead a major presence in certain bacterial populations.</p>



<p>Professor Trevor Lithgow, who is senior author and head of the <a href="https://www.monash.edu/discovery-institute" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute</a>'s Bacterial Cell Biology Lab, is connected with the team that brought this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-recreate-an-ancient-war-trick-to-defeat-viruses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">discovery</a> to light. His group at <a href="https://www.monash.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Monash University</a> has been examining how these viruses, known as bacteriophages (or phages), target their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-pass-down-their-memories-to-fight-viruses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacterial</a> hosts.  </p>



<p>At least 120 research teams at the Institute explore how microorganisms adapt and spread in different conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-telomere-phages-in-bacterial-cells">Telomere phages in bacterial cells</h2>



<p>Some phages use telomere-like structures to replicate their genomes. Because of this, they are also known as telomere <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37896796/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">phages</a>. They were once overlooked, partly because researchers assumed these phages were too rare to deserve much attention.</p>



<p>Scientists in the current study used <a href="https://www.mpie.de/4675247/advanced-electron-microscopy-techniques" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">advanced electron microscopy</a> to check how these telomere phages assemble inside bacterial cells. They saw many viral particles, each equipped with special strategies to spread between cells.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-telomere-phages-matter">Why telomere phages matter</h2>



<p>One surprising twist is that telomere phages that have infected bacteria can bestow weapons on their hosts. The research team showed that these tools, called <a href="https://www.biology.utah.edu/uncategorized/tailocins-the-next-generation-of-antibiotics-might-just-come-from-understanding-the-viruses-that-infect-bacteria/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">telocins</a>, help certain infected bacteria to kill off less "friendly" strains of bacteria. </p>



<p>Telocins have the potential to knock out neighboring bacteria, including variants that resist antibiotics. That finding raises hopes for new approaches to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-first-bacteria-used-oxygen-about-one-billion-years-earlier-than-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacterial</a> control, especially in hospital settings where <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20929376/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">antibiotic-resistant microbes</a> cause big problems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-telomere-phages-hiding-in-plain-sight">Telomere phages hiding in plain sight</h2>



<p>The group sequenced a type of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-type-of-microbes-found-earths-deep-soil-critical-zone/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacterium</a> that is sometimes found in people with lung infections. They noticed that telomere phages were abundant, despite years of prior scientific efforts that failed to record their existence.</p>



<p>“For more than 20 years of intensive bacterial genomics, telomere phages had remained hidden in plain sight. We have missed an entire aspect of biology,” said Professor Lithgow.</p>



<p>Specialists once wrote these viruses off as mere oddities, but they appear to be quite common and widespread. Researchers refer to telomere phages as stealthy elements that integrate seamlessly and replicate in unusual ways.</p>



<p>Now they recognize these phages as big influencers. They can help shape which bacteria thrive and which ones stay in check, especially in places where many bacterial types compete.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-telocins-and-their-impact">Telocins and their impact</h2>



<p>“Our discovery of toxins that we call ‘telocins’ (for telomere-phage toxins) has a potential translation as a bacterial management strategy: ‘good’ bacteria carrying telomere phages will kill neighboring ‘bad’ <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/klebsiella/about/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Klebsiella</em></a>. An example of ‘bad’ bacteria would be antibiotic-resistant <em>Klebsiella</em>,” explained Professor Lithgow.</p>



<p>The scientists discovered that the phages carry instructions for these telocins. This toxin can destroy neighboring bacterial cells if they lack immunity genes that the phage also encodes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-future-care">Implications for future care</h2>



<p>Infections involving drug-resistant <em>Klebsiella</em> strains remain a major concern in hospitals. Some strains evade treatment, and can trigger severe complications in patients.</p>



<p>Telomere phages could point scientists toward creative therapies for controlling these threatening microbes. By harnessing telocins, it might be possible to target specific bacterial populations without wiping out beneficial strains.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-viruses-present-in-bacterial-populations">Viruses present in bacterial populations </h2>



<p>The same investigations hint that such phages exist not only in one type of <em>Klebsiella</em> but also in multiple related species. This suggests there may be broad viral diversity that remains undocumented.</p>



<p>Further analysis indicated that telomere phages might be common in water sources and other places where these bacteria reside. Researchers say that ignoring them might be risky, given the practical value in knowing how to manipulate or 'tame' them.</p>



<p>Scientists used different bacterial strains to test how widespread telocin activity might be. They observed that many strains were vulnerable, which hints at how potent these toxins can be.</p>



<p>They are now exploring the methods these toxins use to enter and destroy target cells. Understanding each step could pave the way for more precise antibacterial tools.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-phages-live-peacefully-inside-their-hosts">Phages live peacefully inside their hosts</h2>



<p>Investigators confirmed that carrying these telomere phages typically does not slow bacterial growth in the lab. This points to a balanced coexistence where the virus “lives” inside the bacterium.</p>



<p>“We now want to understand how the host secretes the toxin and also understand how the toxin wheedles its way into the unsuspecting bacterial neighbors," said first author Sally Byers from the Lithgow Laboratory.</p>



<p>"While all of our work has been done in <em>Klebsiella</em>, we predict that yet to be discovered telomere phages may be common in other species of bacteria too."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-viruses-and-bacterial-evolution">Viruses and bacterial evolution</h2>



<p>These revelations stand out because they push us to challenge old assumptions. Viruses once shrugged off as bit players could actually be important forces in the evolution of bacterial populations.</p>



<p>They have a knack for arming their hosts with special features, which creates ripple effects in the microbial community. That dynamic might help clarify how antibiotic-resistant bacteria get an upper hand, or how some strains survive stressful environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-work-on-virus-toxin-links">More work on virus-toxin links</h2>



<p>Uncovering the prevalence of telomere phages is step one in a longer journey. Scientists believe there is still much to learn about these viruses in other bacterial groups.</p>



<p>They hope the findings will inspire deeper studies into phage-toxin partnerships. With more data, we might discover ways to control bacterial infections by turning their own viral partners against them.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-phages-may-control-microbes-in-nature">Phages may control microbes in nature</h2>



<p>Everyday environments, from soil to fresh water, could be teeming with similar viruses. Telomere phages may hold sway over the balance of microbes that live in those habitats.</p>



<p>If researchers manage to harness telocins outside medical settings, they might be able to limit harmful bacteria in agriculture or in waste water systems. Such efforts may help defend plants, livestock, and broader ecosystems against dangerous infections.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fighting-antibiotic-resistance">Fighting antibiotic resistance</h2>



<p>It is clear that antibiotic resistance is a global threat that demands new tactics. These viruses could serve as a fresh line of research to guide us to target antibiotic-resistant bacteria more precisely.</p>



<p>Telomere phages may also help scientists figure out how to give helpful microbes a competitive edge. By doing so, we might encourage healthier ecosystems and better patient outcomes.</p>

<p>Experts say the presence of telomere phages across various species of bacteria might reshape how we categorize viruses. Past labels like “rare curiosity” no longer fit, given their potentially substantial roles.</p>



<p>They suspect that these phages exist under our noses and have gone unnoticed for a very long time. By shining a light on them, we may upgrade our overall understanding of the way microbial life functions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions </h2>



<p>Although telocins and phages present interesting opportunities, the work is still in its early stages. Researchers stress that real-world applications will depend on careful testing to ensure safety and reliability.</p>



<p>They also emphasize the need to evaluate any unintended effects on beneficial bacteria. Balanced strategies that avoid widespread harm to the broader microbial community are essential for success.</p>



<p>Further research will aim to identify more telomere phages. Surveying other bacterial populations could reveal how widespread these viruses are in medical, environmental, and industrial settings.</p>



<p>Refining phage-based methods could support modern medicine’s quest to combat resistant bacteria. Current findings suggest it is wise to keep an eye on these once-ignored viruses.</p>

Previously-overlooked viruses may secretly shape bacterial populations

Researchers investigating a type of virus that was once dismissed...

<p>SPHEREx, NASA’s latest space observatory, has officially begun scanning the skies after weeks of careful preparation in orbit. Each day, it captures around 3,600 images to build a vibrant, detailed map of the universe that is unlike anything seen before.</p>



<p>Launched into space on March 11, the observatory was created by scientists from the <a href="https://www.caltech.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">California Institute of Technology</a> (Caltech), NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and other institutions. Over six weeks, the mission team checked and calibrated every part of the observatory to ensure it would perform as planned. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exploring-the-origins-of-the-universe">Exploring the origins of the universe </h2>



<p>On May 1, SPHEREx entered its full science phase. Over the next two years, it will use its powerful infrared sensors to explore the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shapes-of-one-million-galaxies-hint-at-the-universes-origins/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">origins of the universe</a>, trace the history of galaxies, and search for the ingredients of life scattered across our galaxy.</p>



<p>“Thanks to the hard work of teams across NASA, industry, and academia that built this mission, SPHEREx is operating just as we’d expected and will produce maps of the full sky unlike any we’ve had before,” said Shawn Domagal-Goldman, acting director of the Astrophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. </p>



<p>“This new observatory is adding to the suite of space-based astrophysics survey missions leading up to the launch of NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Together with these other missions, SPHEREx will play a key role in answering the big questions about the universe we tackle at NASA every day."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-spherex-sees-the-universe">How SPHEREx sees the universe</h2>



<p>SPHEREx, short for Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer, circles Earth roughly 14½ times a day. It follows a <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/tracking-polar-orbiting-satellites/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">polar orbit</a>, passing over the North and South Poles, and captures images in strips that wrap around the planet. </p>



<p>Each day adds another strip. Over six months, the telescope will observe the full sky, and over 25 months, it will do this four times.</p>



<p>To control its movement, the spacecraft doesn’t use thrusters. Instead, it adjusts its orientation using reaction wheels, which are spinning devices inside the observatory.</p>



<p>Unlike some telescopes, SPHEREx doesn’t move its mirrors or detectors to shift its view. Instead, the entire <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/farewell-to-gaia-the-spacecraft-that-mapped-the-milky-way/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">spacecraft</a> tilts slightly to change its pointing direction.</p>



<p>Each image is actually a set of six, with each detector capturing a different part of the infrared spectrum. These are called exposures. SPHEREx takes about 600 exposures every day.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-beginning-of-everything">Understanding the beginning of everything</h2>



<p>Over two years, the observatory will generate hundreds of thousands of images. These will be woven into four complete maps of the entire sky. Scientists will use them to look for clues about what took place during the earliest moments after the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/if-the-big-bang-theory-is-correct-what-exactly-happened/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">big bang</a>.</p>



<p>One key moment the experts are interested in is called cosmic inflation, which occurred a fraction of a second after the universe began. During this time, the universe expanded faster than the speed of light - to a trillion-trillion times its starting size. This sudden growth left subtle traces in how matter is spread across space.</p>



<p>“We’re going to study what happened on the smallest size scales in the universe’s earliest moments by looking at the modern universe on the largest scales,” said Jim Fanson, the mission’s project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. “I think there’s a poetic arc to that.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-echoes-of-early-universe-expansion">Echoes of early universe expansion </h2>



<p>The positions of galaxies today still carry echoes of early universe expansion. These patterns hold the secrets to what kind of energy triggered inflation. Studying them may reveal something never seen before in nature - the kind of energy that could have powered this vast transformation.</p>



<p>“Some of us have been working toward this goal for 12 years,” said Jamie Bock, the mission’s principal investigator at Caltech and JPL. </p>



<p>“The performance of the instrument is as good as we hoped. That means we’re going to be able to do all the amazing science we planned on and perhaps even get some unexpected discoveries.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-map-has-a-spectrum-of-possibilities">The map has a spectrum of possibilities</h2>



<p>While SPHEREx is not the first observatory to chart the entire sky, it is the first to do so in 102 colors of infrared light. That’s far more than previous missions. </p>



<p>Infrared light is invisible to human eyes but carries important information about distant stars, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-galaxies-discovery-would-upend-current-understanding-of-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies</a>, and clouds of gas and dust.</p>



<p>The observatory uses a method called spectroscopy to break down light into its component wavelengths, similar to how a prism splits sunlight into a rainbow. Each color tells a different story.</p>



<p>For instance, this method helps determine how far away a galaxy is. That turns a flat map of galaxy locations into a 3D picture of the cosmos. Spectroscopy also lets scientists measure the total light from all galaxies that ever existed and how it has changed over billions of years.</p>



<p>And in our own galaxy, it will help look for key molecules that support life. Water, for example, can be detected in frozen form on dust grains. Scientists believe these icy grains were the source of Earth’s ocean water.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-spherex-could-reveal-next">What SPHEREx could reveal next</h2>



<p>SPHEREx is expected to make over nine million measurements of interstellar clouds across the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/astronomers-found-something-strange-at-core-of-milky-way-galaxy-webb-meerkat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Milky Way</a>. These data will help scientists understand how chemistry varies in different space environments. It may even explain how life-friendly molecules found their way to Earth.</p>



<p>With a simple approach and sophisticated tools, this small spacecraft is investigating some of the biggest questions humanity has ever asked. And it’s doing it one image at a time.</p>

SPHEREx is mapping the universe in unprecedented detail

SPHEREx, NASA’s latest space observatory, has officially begun scanning the...

<p>When the Webb Telescope began sending back its first deep‑field images, astronomers expected a gentle trickle of faint, infant galaxies. Instead, they found massive, bright "red monster" galaxies shining barely 500 million to one billion years after the Big Bang.</p>



<p>That early cosmic boom of redshifted galaxies surprised even seasoned researchers who thought they had a solid grip on how galaxies grow.</p>



<p>Those jumbo galaxies - some as hefty as today’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/astronomers-found-something-strange-at-core-of-milky-way-galaxy-webb-meerkat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Milky Way</a> - seemed to upend the standard <a href="https://lambda.gsfc.nasa.gov/education/graphic_history/univ_evol.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lambda Cold Dark Matter (ΛCDM) framework</a>. After all, if giants showed up so soon, maybe the textbook timeline for star formation needed a fresh look. </p>



<p>To pin down what Webb had really seen, an international team dug into the telescope’s FRESCO survey, which pairs crisp imaging with spectroscopic measurements that reveal a galaxy’s exact distance and age.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sky-full-of-red-galaxies">Sky full of 'red' galaxies</h2>



<p>Using <a href="https://academic.oup.com/mnras/article/525/2/2864/7243412" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FRESCO</a>, the team sifted through 36 dust‑shrouded galaxies. Precise redshifts confirmed that most of them fit neatly within ΛCDM expectations. </p>



<p>Three objects, however, refused to play by the usual rules. Each one boasts a stellar mass greater than 10¹¹ times that of the Sun - impressive for any epoch, but absolutely astounding for the universe’s first billion years. </p>



<p>Together the galaxies may have fueled about 17 percent of all star formation between redshifts 5 and 6, when the cosmos was just under a billion years old.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-peering-back-13-billion-years">Peering back 13 billion years</h2>



<p>“Our findings are reshaping our understanding of galaxy formation in the early universe,” says Dr. Mengyuan Xiao, lead author of the study from the <a href="https://www.unige.ch/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Geneva</a>. </p>



<p>The trio’s extreme efficiency stands out: they appear to have turned roughly half of the normal matter available inside their dark‑matter halos into stars, two to three times the rate seen in later epochs. </p>



<p>Typical galaxies manage no more than 20 percent. Yet the emission from these early behemoths is spread across each system, hinting that a ravenous central black hole is not the main driver.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-red-monster-galaxies-emerge">"Red monster" galaxies emerge</h2>



<p>High dust content reddens these galaxies in the <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/webb/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Webb Telescope</a>’s near‑infrared view, earning them the nickname "red monsters." </p>



<p>"The massive properties of these ‘red monsters’ had hardly been determined before JWST because they are optically invisible owing to dust attenuation,” explained Dr. David Elbaz of <a href="https://www.cea.fr/english/Pages/Welcome.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CEA Paris‑Saclay</a>. </p>



<p>That veil once hid their true size from earlier telescopes that relied on ultraviolet light, which dust readily absorbs.</p>



<p><a href="https://jwst-docs.stsci.edu/jwst-near-infrared-camera/nircam-instrumentation/nircam-grisms#gsc.tab=0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Webb’s NIRCam/grism</a> setup changes the game, catching the faint glow of star‑forming regions even when soot‑like grains block shorter wavelengths. </p>

<p>“Our findings highlight the remarkable power of NIRCam/grism spectroscopy,” explains Pascal Oesch, principal investigator of the program. </p>



<p>“The instrument on board the space telescope allows us to identify and study the growth of galaxies over time and to obtain a clearer picture of how stellar mass accumulates over the course of cosmic history.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-rules-for-the-early-universe">New rules for the early universe</h2>



<p>The ΛCDM model says dark‑matter halos act as cosmic scaffolding, snagging gas that later cools and condenses into stars. Over billions of years, most galaxies never convert more than a fifth of that gas. </p>



<p>The red monsters push that limit hard. Forming stars nearly twice as efficiently as smaller systems of the same era, they hint that early conditions - higher gas densities, faster cooling, or more frequent mergers - offered shortcuts to rapid growth.</p>



<p>“These results indicate that galaxies in the early universe could form stars with unexpected efficiency,” Dr. Xiao concludes. </p>



<p>“As we study these galaxies in more depth, they will offer new insights into the conditions that shaped the universe's earliest epochs. The red monsters are just the beginning of a new era in our exploration of the early universe.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-do-red-monster-galaxies-matter">Why do red monster galaxies matter?</h2>



<p>Because light takes time to travel, Webb’s mirrors act like a time machine. Looking 13 billion light‑years away means seeing the cosmos as it was <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/newly-discovered-stars-milky-way-are-old-as-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">13 billion years ago</a>. </p>



<p>Catching massive galaxies so soon after the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/if-the-big-bang-theory-is-correct-what-exactly-happened/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Big Bang</a> forces theorists to revisit the ingredients in their simulations. </p>



<p>Did early gas clouds cool faster? Did primordial stars explode in ways that seeded galaxies with heavy elements sooner than thought? Or do current models underestimate how quickly halos pull matter together at high redshift?</p>



<p>While the latest measurements leave ΛCDM standing, they shrink its wiggle room. Galaxy‑formation codes must now reproduce both the typical dust‑rich galaxies and these overachievers without breaking other well‑tested predictions, such as the distribution of the cosmic microwave background.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-next">What happens next?</h2>



<p>Future Webb programs will broaden the census of early massive systems, while the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (<a href="https://public.nrao.edu/telescopes/alma/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ALMA</a>) maps cold gas and dust in finer detail. </p>

<p>Children’s first encounters with math usually happen at the breakfast table or on the playground, not in a classroom. Developmental scientists have long known that these everyday experiences - like counting blocks or footsteps to the front door - nurture an intuitive sense of quantity.</p>



<p>According to a comprehensive report, a strong “number sense” builds arithmetic fluency, which later supports success in algebra, geometry, and adult earnings. </p>



<p>Yet the route from cereal-box counting to fluent calculation has been hotly debated: Should teachers focus on memorizing multiplication tables, or on fostering deeper conceptual reasoning? The new review concludes that the debate sets up a false choice.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-framework-for-learning-math">New framework for learning math</h2>



<p>Drawing on behavioral experiments, longitudinal research, neuroimaging data, and classroom design studies, the researchers propose a three-stage cycle in which facts and concepts reinforce one another.</p>



<p>They believe fluency starts with understanding, improves with timed practice, and deepens through reflection and discussion.</p>



<p>“We want to be clear: Educators don’t have to choose between timed practice and rich classroom discussions," said study lead author Nicole McNeil of the <a href="https://www.nd.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Notre Dame</a>.</p>



<p>"A carefully structured approach - pairing brief, timed sessions that strengthen facts in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-does-our-brain-form-long-term-memories/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">memory</a> with purposeful reasoning and discussion activities that weave those facts into an integrated knowledge network - gives students the fluency they need to succeed.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-shifts-with-practice"><strong>Brain shifts with practice</strong></h2>



<p>The researchers frame math learning as a dynamic movement between two knowledge states. Young children start with implicit insights: they can combine two sets of crackers and anticipate a larger pile without articulating why.</p>



<p>Over time, guided instruction turns these hunches into explicit strategies, such as “counting on from the bigger number” or recognizing that addition is commutative. </p>



<p>With continued, targeted practice - ideally in short, carefully timed bursts - these explicit strategies become automatic, freeing up mental resources for higher-level problem solving.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-imaging-method-will-unravel-mysteries-of-neural-processes/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neuroimaging</a> studies cited in the report reveal that as this process unfolds, brain activation patterns begin to shift. Brain activity shifts from effortful reasoning to rapid recall, reflecting the child’s move from counting slowly to instant retrieval.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-no-more-math-wars"><strong>No more math wars</strong></h2>



<p>Because fluency develops through intertwined conceptual and procedural growth, the authors argue, classroom instruction should regularly cycle between the two. </p>



<p>Early progress monitoring is recommended to spot gaps in mental number representations. Explicit teaching of thinking strategies, such as making tens, can help address those gaps. </p>



<p>The research team also suggests using retrieval exercises designed to be brief enough to encourage speed only after accuracy has been achieved.</p>



<p>Each timed practice session should end with group discussion where students explain methods and link facts to broader ideas. This “explain–practice–explain” rhythm avoids the pitfalls of rote memorization while ensuring that knowledge can be deployed automatically when needed, noted the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-math-skills-shape-futures"><strong>Math skills shape futures</strong></h2>



<p>The paper’s authors and an <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/epub/10.1177/15291006251326581" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">accompanying commentary</a> by Melissa E. Libertus of the <a href="https://www.pitt.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Pittsburgh</a> highlight the practical stakes. </p>



<p>Students who leave elementary school fluent in arithmetic adapt more readily to algebraic symbolism, grasp fraction magnitudes more accurately, and solve multi-step word problems more efficiently.</p>



<p>Longitudinal data link early math skills to later academic attainment and even adult income. The experts argue that arithmetic fluency is essential in today’s data-driven world - just as important as reading.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-training-teachers-with-research"><strong>Training teachers with research</strong></h2>



<p>Despite the strong evidence base, many teacher-preparation programs devote limited time to the cognitive science of math <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secrets-of-learning-how-our-brains-neurons-make-and-retrieve-memories/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">learning</a>. The researchers call for more explicit coursework that helps future educators evaluate instructional materials through the lens of learning research.</p>



<p>Digital tutoring systems and adaptive practice apps can help - but only when educators integrate them into conceptual discussions and reflective reasoning. </p>



<p>Future research should explore how parents’ math anxiety affects children and how digital tools can personalize practice while preserving depth.</p>

<p>The report arrives at a moment when timed tests and “math wars” rhetoric still spark controversy. Speed and understanding aren’t opposing goals - they build on each other in a well-designed learning process.</p>



<p>By letting children’s initial intuitions surface, honing them through targeted practice, and weaving them back into rich conceptual networks, educators can cultivate the kind of fluency that supports future math learning. This fluency also aids in real-world problem solving.</p>



<p>The science of learning, the authors argue, shows that arithmetic proficiency is built not on memorization alone and not on exploration alone, but on a deliberate interplay of the two. This is proof that, in mathematics as in many areas of education, balance and evidence go hand in hand.</p>

<p>A flash of intense radiation seen in space has upended long-held ideas about how some of our heaviest metals emerge. Scientists have found that such a flare can pump out vast amounts of heavy, rare atoms in mere seconds, revealing a surprising origin for valuables like gold and platinum.</p>



<p>Brian Metzger from the Flatiron Institute’s <a href="https://www.simonsfoundation.org/flatiron/center-for-computational-astrophysics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Center for Computational Astrophysics</a> in New York City is one of the researchers behind this magnetar flare discovery.</p>



<p>Metzger and his colleagues worked to show how these unusually powerful neutron star <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mysterious-magnetar-has-unknown-origins/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">outbursts</a> can forge precious metals, called called <a href="https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2021RvMP...93a5002C/abstract" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">r-process elements</a>, at unimaginable scales.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-magnetars-the-basics">Understanding magnetars - the basics</h2>



<p>Magnetars are the universe’s most intense magnets, and they’re not just strong - they’re wildly extreme. Born from the explosive death of massive stars, these neutron stars pack more mass than our sun into a ball just a dozen miles wide. </p>



<p>Their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/huge-outbursts-from-quiet-magnetars-have-a-surprising-source/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">magnetic fields</a> are a thousand times stronger than typical neutron stars, and trillions of times beyond anything found on Earth. </p>



<p>If you stood anywhere near one (which, thankfully, you can’t), it could scramble your atoms just by existing. That’s how intense these cosmic beasts are.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-magnetar-flares-and-heavy-metals">Magnetar flares and heavy metals</h2>



<p>What makes magnetars even more bizarre is their behavior. They occasionally unleash powerful bursts of X-rays and gamma rays - <a href="https://www.aanda.org/articles/aa/full_html/2025/02/aa52268-24/aa52268-24.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">giant flares</a> so energetic they can mess with satellites on Earth, even from thousands of light-years away. </p>



<p>One recent flare analysis suggests that as much as two million billion billion kilograms of heavy atoms formed in a single event.</p>



<p>Astronomers think these bursts come from “starquakes” that crack the surface of the magnetar when its magnetic field twists and snaps.</p>



<p>Researchers have now determined that flares of this sort could explain up to 10 percent of our galaxy’s gold, platinum, and similar metals. </p>



<p>Each flare is like an elemental factory, hot enough and dense enough for neutrons to ram into lighter elements and create heavier, neutron-rich <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unusual-activity-detected-from-earths-closest-magnetar/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">materials</a> in a matter of minutes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-magnetar-flares-make-gold-and-uranium">Magnetar flares make gold and uranium</h2>



<p>“This is really just the second time we've ever directly seen proof of where these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fastest-spinning-magnetar-reveals-secrets-of-neutron-stars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">elements</a> form. It’s a substantial leap in our understanding of heavy elements production,” said Metzger.</p>



<p>That confirmation, along with the latest finding, helps clarify how the universe stocks its cupboards with metals far heavier than iron.</p>



<p>Beyond gold and platinum, other materials like uranium can also appear through this r-process. It takes extraordinary places to host so many free neutrons. </p>



<p>Flares from magnetars happen to create just the right conditions, letting nuclei snatch up these stray particles and jump up the elemental ladder.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-novel-insight-on-stardust">Novel insight on stardust</h2>



<p>Historically, scientists believed most heavy elements took shape in supernova explosions or during neutron star mergers. </p>



<p>While those events remain important, magnetar flares add another piece of the cosmic puzzle. Their high-energy jets can toss newly formed metals out into surrounding space, seeding future star systems and even rocky planets.</p>



<p>Observations of a magnetar flare in <a href="https://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/xte/Greatest_Hits/sgr_bell.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">December 2004</a> first hinted at this possibility. By piecing together data from space telescopes, researchers noticed an unexplained pulse of gamma-ray light roughly minutes after the initial blast. </p>



<p>That signal, experts argue, was the radioactive glow of freshly minted heavy nuclei cooling off.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-eruptions-eject-vast-amounts-of-matter">Eruptions eject vast amounts of matter</h2>



<p>Magnetars have long fascinated astronomers because of their intense fields and sudden outbursts. </p>



<p>Each flare involves an extreme rearrangement of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-magnetic-field-has-a-dent-and-nasa-is-watching-closely/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">magnetic</a> lines, generating shock waves that knock matter from the star’s surface. </p>



<p>The ejected material experiences a runaway chain of nuclear reactions, which can lead to entire mountains of precious metals.</p>

<p>Such flares are rare, which complicates efforts to catch them at the exact moment they happen. Even so, astronomers remain hopeful that future telescopes will detect more evidence. </p>



<p>Missions like <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2308.12362" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA’s Compton Spectrometer and Imager</a>, expected to launch in 2027, may be able to track these fleeting signals in greater detail.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-magnetar-flares-and-early-metals">Magnetar flares and early metals</h2>



<p>Astronomers say these discoveries reshape how we understand metal formation in young galaxies. </p>



<p>Because magnetars can flare at earlier epochs than some other events, their blasts might add heavy elements earlier in a galaxy’s life cycle. This could explain why certain <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1086/529487" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metal signatures</a> appear sooner than expected in distant stars.</p>



<p>On Earth, these metals underlie countless technologies. It’s remarkable to think a phone’s circuit board may hold atoms brewed inside a magnetar’s angry outburst. </p>



<p>The new findings also put magnetars on par with neutron star collisions, highlighting them as a real contender in fueling the cosmic supply of r-process elements.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-waiting-for-the-next-magnetar-eruption">Waiting for the next magnetar eruption</h2>



<p>Looking ahead, the team anticipates more data from modern observatories as soon as another magnetar decides to erupt. </p>



<p>Detecting its high-energy afterglow would offer an unmatched peek at nuclear reactions in real time. That fleeting flash of gamma rays encodes signatures of newly formed isotopes, letting scientists chart how matter evolves.</p>



<p>Once a flare is caught in action, researchers plan to spin telescopes around fast enough to observe the after-effects. That could confirm whether the same pattern holds for multiple flares or if the 2004 event was a standout case. </p>



<p>Either way, the odds of future catches rise as instruments become more sensitive across multiple wavelengths.</p>

<p>On the scrub‑covered plains of northeastern Brazil, millions of brown cones rise just high enough to catch the late‑day sun. They look like random piles left by passing farmers and, until recently, they fooled researchers too. </p>



<p>Satellite images finally revealed their true extent: an earthen metropolis spread over roughly 88,000 square miles - about the size of Great Britain - and built grain by grain by termites no longer than a fingernail.</p>



<p>Most ecosystems show traces of the animals that shape them, yet few match this scale. The <em>Syntermes dirus</em> termites have pushed more than 2.4 cubic miles of soil to the surface, assembling around 200 million mounds without a single blueprint. </p>



<p>Only when scientists from the <a href="https://www.salford.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Salford</a> and the Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (<a href="https://www.uefs.br/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UEFS</a>) began pairing drone flights with ground surveys did the pattern emerge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tiny-silent-architects-of-the-caatinga">Tiny, silent architects of the caatinga</h2>



<p>The caatinga - a seasonally dry forest shot through with thorny shrubs - offers slim pickings. </p>



<p>Rain arrives in bursts, leaves fall fast, and food appears in scattered pockets. That scarcity has pushed S. dirus to become subterranean engineers. </p>



<p>While foraging, they carve tunnels just beneath the surface, shoving spoil upward through temporary shafts. Each shaft becomes a cone about 8.2 feet high and 29.5 feet wide; over time those cones harden into permanent landmarks.</p>



<p>Unlike the tower‑like nests seen in Africa or Australia, these Brazilian mounds hold no royal chamber or nursery. </p>



<p>They are solid waste dumps - the visible residue of an underground traffic system optimized for hauling leaf litter home. </p>



<p>The termites stay hidden by day, sealing narrow access tubes until darkness brings cooler air and fewer predators.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-very-very-old-termite-mounds">Very, very old termite mounds</h2>



<p>To work out when the first heaps appeared, researchers drilled cores from mound centers and dated mineral grains with optically stimulated luminescence. </p>



<p>Some cones formed 3,820 years ago; others are as ‘young’ as 690 years old. That makes them among the oldest termite structures on Earth, older than many stone monuments humans celebrate.</p>



<p>Every termite mound cone holds roughly 65 cubic yards of packed clay. Multiply that by 200 million, and the displaced soil rivals about 4,000 Great Pyramids of Giza - a statistic the team highlighted to put insect power in perspective.</p>



<p>Field crews could visit only a fraction of the cones, so the study turned to a modeling tool called <a href="https://biodiversityinformatics.amnh.org/open_source/maxent/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MAXENT</a>. By feeding confirmed mound locations into the algorithm, the scientists projected where similar terrain likely hosts more cones. </p>



<p>Follow‑up hikes backed the prediction: the grid stretches for hundreds of miles, yet human activity barely nicks it because the acidic clay is poor farmland.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decoding-the-perfect-spacing">Decoding the perfect spacing</h2>



<p>Stand atop one termite mound, and another sits about 65 feet away in any direction - a pattern called ‘over‑dispersed’. </p>



<p>To discover whether rival colonies enforced such order, the team introduced termites from neighboring heaps to one another. </p>



<p>No hostility surfaced unless the insects came from sites roughly 31 miles apart, implying that spacing is not a product of territorial squabbles.</p>

<p>Instead, self‑organization explains the grid. Removing soil is costly, so pushing spoil to a single point and never digging there again saves energy. </p>



<p>Over centuries, the termites created a lattice with an average density of 4,660 mounds per square mile. Chemical signals probably keep the lattice intact; pheromone trails guide workers through labyrinthine tunnels to food, to waste cones, and back again without traffic jams.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-life-underground-in-a-termite-mound">Life underground in a termite mound</h2>



<p>Beneath each cone lies a central artery that branches like a tree root. The network lets colonies reach new leaf drops without surfacing midday in brutal heat. </p>



<p>By night, workers nibble dry leaves, ferry them below, and seal the entrance behind them. The cones themselves do nothing more than hold discarded clay, yet they mark the tunnel map for generations.</p>



<p>Parallels pop up across harsh landscapes. Naked mole‑rats in East Africa build similar subterranean webs to chase tubers. </p>



<p>North American gophers leave spoil piles comparable in form, though smaller in scale. In every case, sparse resources push small creatures to redesign the very ground they inhabit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-termites-the-basics">Understanding termites - the basics</h2>



<p>Termites might be tiny, but they play a massive role in shaping ecosystems. These insects live in highly organized colonies, sometimes numbering in the millions, and they divide their tasks among workers, soldiers, and queens. </p>



<p>You’ll often find them in warm, humid environments where they chew through wood, dead plants, and even dung. </p>



<p>While we tend to associate termites with destruction - especially when they invade homes - they actually help recycle nutrients back into the soil, keeping forests and grasslands healthy.</p>



<p>What’s fascinating is how they build and communicate. Termites use chemical signals to coordinate everything, from feeding to defending their nest. </p>



<p>Some species even construct towering mounds that regulate temperature and humidity through intricate tunnel systems - essentially natural air-conditioning. </p>



<p>So yes, while they might give homeowners nightmares, termites are more than just pests. They're nature’s quiet architects, shaping the world one bite at a time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-from-a-living-city">Lessons from a living city</h2>



<p>The Brazilian grid shows that big construction does not require big bodies or even central planning. </p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. <p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.</p>



<p>“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. </p>



<p>The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.</p>



<p>“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”</p>



<p>The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?</p>



<p>One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;</p>

<p>'The weather of Santiago resembles the Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (from October to March) and cool and humid winters that can drop to 0°C (from April to September)."</p>



<p>"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.</p>
