<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-links-flavor-and-smell">How the brain links flavor and smell</h2>



<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-flavor-and-smell-matter">Why flavor and smell matter</h2>



<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>



<p>This suggests that our flavor experiences are dynamic, adapting with exposure, context, and internal states such as hunger, mood, or attention. </p>



<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-affect-health">How flavor and smell affect health</h2>



<p>This research reframes flavor as a deeply integrated brain process. Smell and taste are not separate streams but overlapping codes that can trick the brain into tasting without tasting.</p>



<p>Beyond solving everyday mysteries like sweet-tasting flavored water, the work raises questions about cravings, overeating, and how our diets are shaped by environments filled with powerful aromas. </p>



<p>The research also suggests that everyday exposure to food-related smells in supermarkets, restaurants, offices, and even advertising spaces may influence us more than we realize.</p>



<p>These aromas may prime the brain to expect certain tastes, creating a loop where scent alone can nudge us toward food choices we might not otherwise make. </p>



<p>Over time, this subtle influence could shape eating habits, nutritional patterns, and even health outcomes, revealing how deeply our sensory world directs behavior long before conscious decisions take place.</p>

<p>The tapestry of human evolution is adorned with fascinating episodes and, among them, the story of <em>Paranthropus robustus</em> from the Cradle of Humankind in South Africa stands out as a testament to survival, adaptation, and dominance.</p>



<p>This ancient hominin species, also referred to as <em>Australopithecus robustus</em>, inhabited the terrains of South Africa approximately 2 million years ago. It shared this region with <em>Homo ergaster</em>, which is believed to be a direct forerunner of modern humans.</p>



<p>The Swartkrans Cave, that is nestled halfway between Johannesburg and Pretoria, is a treasure trove of <em>Paranthropus robustus</em> fossils. </p>



<p>Archaeological pursuits at this site since 1948 have helped unearth a multitude of insightful details about the extinct species' dietary patterns and social arrangements.</p>



<p>But a recent groundbreaking discovery is now reshaping what we know about the physical traits and way of life of these early hominins, offering a rare glimpse into how they moved, survived, and interacted in a prehistoric landscape.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-life-and-traits-of-paranthropus-robustus">Life and traits of <em>Paranthropus robustus</em></h2>



<p><em>Paranthropus robustus</em> was equipped with extraordinarily heavy jaws and thickly coated teeth – an adaptation for enduring lean times by when individuals would have needed to consume low-grade, tough foods. </p>



<p>Fossilized skulls and teeth of this species have been excavated in several different locations in the Cradle of Humankind.</p>



<p>The skulls and teeth provide fascinating insights into the social structure of these hominins. Some are exceptionally large, suggesting that they were probably males, while others are smaller and likely to have been females.</p>



<p>This physical difference suggests that <em>Paranthropus robustus</em> probably engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/polygynous-male-mammals-may-have-more-sexual-aggression/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">polygyny</a> – a system of mating where one dominant male mates with several females.</p>



<p>But until now, the scarcity of fossilized bones from the rest of the post-cranial skeleton has impeded our knowledge of their body type, posture, and locomotion – key&nbsp;characteristics&nbsp;associated&nbsp;with their diet and mate searching behavior.</p>



<p>A recent groundbreaking find in the Swartkrans Cave is, however, poised to reverse this paradigm.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-discoveries-at-swartkrans-cave">Discoveries at Swartkrans cave</h2>



<p>Recently, an international team of researchers based at the Evolutionary Studies Institute at the <a href="https://www.wits.ac.za/esi/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of the Witwatersrand</a> in South Africa made a fascinating discovery.</p>



<p>Their dig resulted in the exposure of the very first articulating hipbone, thigh bone, and shin bone of a <em>Paranthropus robustus</em> individual.</p>



<p>This groundbreaking discovery provides us with valuable information regarding the existence and features of this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/homo-juluensis-new-human-species-vanished-just-fifty-thousand-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">prehistoric hominin species</a>.</p>



<p>The newly discovered fossil not only illustrates that <em>Paranthropus robustus</em> primarily moved around by walking upright (similar to the locomotion of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/modern-humans-are-separated-from-neanderthals-by-one-gene/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">modern humans</a>), but also reveals their surprisingly petite size.</p>

<p>"It is estimated that this individual, probably a female, was only about a meter tall (3.3 feet) and 27 kg (60 pounds) when it died, making it even smaller than adults from other diminutive early human species, including those represented by the famous '<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lucy-could-barely-run-what-does-that-say-about-our-ancestors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lucy</a>' (<em>Australopithecus afarensis</em>; about 3.2 million years old) and 'Hobbit' (<em>Homo floresiensis</em>; about 90,000 years old) skeletons, from Ethiopia and Indonesia, respectively," explained Professor Pickering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, who spearheaded the research.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-predators-prey-and-survival-instincts">Predators, prey, and survival instincts</h2>



<p>The compact size of the prehistoric <em>Prananthropus robustus</em> rendered them vulnerable to predators, such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/two-new-species-of-sabertooth-cat-discovered-in-south-africa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sabertooth cats</a> and giant hyenas, who roamed the areas surrounding Swartkrans Cave.</p>



<p>This hypothesis is supported by the team's identification of tooth marks and chewing damage on fossilized <em>P. robustus</em> bones. These marks are identical to those made by leopards when they chew on their prey.</p>



<p>Yet, their small size didn’t necessarily hinder their survival. </p>



<p>"Although it seems that this particular <em>Paranthropus robustus</em> individual was the unfortunate victim of predation, that conclusion does not mean that the entire species was inept," Pickering stresses.</p>



<p>Their existence in South Africa for over a million years attests to their endurance, and the presence of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/first-tools-ever-made-on-earth-hominins-3-million-years-ago-cradle-of-humankind/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stone and bone tools</a> near their fossils suggests a degree of intelligence.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-next">What happens next?</h2>



<p>In order to learn more about the growth and developmental patterns of <em>Paranthropus robustus</em>, as well as their locomotion behaviors, the team is currently doing research that includes CT-scan examinations of internal bone structures.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-daily-lives-of-paranthropus-robustus">Daily lives of <em>Paranthropus robustus</em></h2>



<p>Outside of their skeletal system and survival habits, knowledge of the daily existence of <em>Paranthropus robustus</em> gives greater insight into what they were like.</p>



<p>Scientists surmise that the early hominins lived in small groups and most likely scavenged in groups in the woodland and open savannas that surrounded the Swartkrans Cave. </p>



<p>They ate largely tough plant matter, such as roots, tubers, and seeds, to which their heavy-duty jaws and heavily enamel-coated teeth were best suited.</p>



<p>Proof of stone and bone tools alongside their fossils evokes intriguing questions regarding their level of cognitive skills. </p>



<p>Although not as sophisticated a tool maker as the subsequent hominin species, <em>P. robustus</em> might have utilized basic tools to assist with food preparation and tuber excavation.</p>



<p>Such resourcefulness implies that <em>Paranthropus robustus</em> was more cunning than previously realized, and was potentially able to manipulate its surroundings in order to enhance survival prospects.</p>



<p>As scientists go on to examine fossilized bones and related artifacts, every finding is a step towards piecing together the complicated world of <em>Paranthropus robustus</em>, a species that flourished under difficult prehistoric conditions.</p>

Discovery: These human ancestors walked upright over 2 million years ago

<p>Millions of years from now, the remnants of today’s world will be buried beneath layers of rock and sediment. While fossils of ancient creatures have long fascinated scientists, we are likely to leave behind a new kind of fossil in the future - one shaped by human activity. </p>



<p>These "technofossils" include everything from plastic bottles and old mobile phones to the most unexpected of all - the blades of wind turbines.</p>



<p>The idea that everyday objects could become <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neanderthal-fossils-reveal-signs-of-a-population-collapse/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossils</a> may seem strange. People associate fossils with dinosaur bones, ancient trees, and primitive sea creatures - not with discarded technology.</p>



<p>However, researchers have started to realize that the impact of human-made materials will last far longer than many natural formations. The structures we build and the items we use daily will leave a lasting imprint on the Earth’s geological record, creating a new chapter in the history of fossilization.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-human-made-objects-become-fossils">How human-made objects become fossils</h2>



<p>Fossilization is a slow and selective process. For an object to become a fossil, it must be buried under sediment, shielded from decay, and eventually mineralized over time. </p>



<p>Most organic materials decompose before they have a chance to fossilize, but some artificial materials resist natural breakdown.</p>



<p>Plastics, synthetic fabrics, and certain composites are particularly durable. They do not degrade easily, which makes them prime candidates for future <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/north-americas-oldest-dinosaur-is-completely-rewriting-history/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossils</a>.</p>



<p>The layers of waste accumulating in landfills today could, under the right conditions, transform into well-preserved remnants of the Anthropocene epoch - the age of human influence on Earth.</p>



<p><a href="https://le.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Leicester</a> paleontologists Professor Sarah Gabbott and Professor Jan Zalasiewicz have explored this idea in depth. </p>



<p>In their book <a href="https://global.oup.com/academic/product/discarded-9780192869333?cc=gb&amp;lang=en&amp;" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Discarded: How Technofossils Will be Our Ultimate Legacy</em></a>, they examine how the products of modern life will be preserved for millennia. These objects will tell the story of a civilization defined by industry, technology, and mass consumption.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fossilized-wind-turbine-blades">Fossilized wind turbine blades </h2>



<p>Among all the potential technofossils, wind turbine blades stand out as among the most surprising. These towering structures symbolize clean energy, yet their long-term environmental fate remains uncertain.</p>



<p>Unlike the metal towers that hold them aloft, turbine blades are produced from materials that are difficult to recycle, making them far more likely to persist in the geological record.</p>



<p>“The fossils won’t be of the towers, by and large – those are made of metal, which can be recycled. The enormous wind turbine blades, though, are made of materials like fibreglass and epoxy resin and carbon fibres, which are terribly hard to recycle - but easy to fossilize,“ explained Professor Zalasiewicz.</p>



<p>“As wind turbines reach end-of-life and are decommissioned, huge landfills of the 50 meter-long-plus blades, sliced into truck-length segments and neatly stacked side by side, are appearing and growing."</p>



<p>“Some will stay buried for millions of years – and, if finally erosion-revealed and stumbled upon by some curious far-future palaeontologist, will be an amazing sight, like a graveyard of gigantic, hollow, sawn-up bones."</p>



<p>"Some may be squashed and crumpled by earth movements, and others may be filled with mineral growths, but their striking shape and enormous size will shine out of the strata.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-piecing-together-the-past">Piecing together the past</h2>



<p>Future scientists may one day stumble upon these massive fossils and wonder about their origins. </p>



<p>Just as modern paleontologists reconstruct dinosaur skeletons from fragmented bones, these wind turbine fossils could present a mystery for researchers in the distant future. Their aerodynamic design might hint at their original purpose, but without historical records, their function could remain uncertain.</p>



<p>“For our far-future explorers, they will be a huge puzzle – will they be able to tell that they were built to catch the wind, and to provide energy that is clean and renewable? Perhaps they will, if they can piece them together – like we reconstruct huge dinosaur skeletons today – to see their aerodynamic shapes,” said Professor Zalasiewicz.</p>



<p>These fossils will not be alone. They will be part of a vast and complex geological archive of human activity. Alongside them, future scientists may uncover the remains of other everyday objects, from metal wires and plastic containers to microchips and industrial pollutants.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-growing-impact-of-human-waste">Growing impact of human waste</h2>



<p>While wind turbine blades are one of the more dramatic examples, they are not the only evidence of human impact on the planet. </p>



<p>Every year, billions of discarded items accumulate in landfills and oceans. Over time, many of these objects will become buried beneath layers of sediment, preserving them for future generations to discover.</p>



<p>“They will be only one puzzle among the millions we leave behind in our daily lives (and we suspect they would also find the more sinister fossils left by fossil fuel burning). There’s been nothing like this emerging new fossil cornucopia in the Earth’s four and a half billion-year history,“ noted Professor Zalasiewicz.</p>



<p>“And right now, we should begin to understand this amazing, if often toxic, legacy that we are leaving for the planet. Knowing how our myriad discarded objects will fossilise into the far future can help us deal with the growing mountains of trash we live among today.”</p>



<p>Understanding how our waste fossilizes is not just an academic pursuit. It provides insight into the long-term effects of human consumption and pollution. </p>



<p>This knowledge could encourage more sustainable practices and better waste management strategies to reduce the environmental footprint of future generations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-relics-of-modern-life">Unexpected relics of modern life</h2>



<p>The idea of human-made fossils, including turbine blades, invites some unusual questions.</p>



<p>What will be the strangest objects that survive millions of years into the future? Which everyday items will become the most unexpected relics of modern life?</p>



<p>“It’s been a real adventure to use our understanding of how fossils form in the past and now apply it to the very new world of what we call technofossils,“ Professor Sarah Gabbott noted.</p>



<p>“But then we were asked a really tricky question. What will the most surprising technofossil that we leave behind, millions (or billions) of years from now?</p>



<p>“There are so many candidates to rival wind turbines for the ‘weirdest human-made fossil of all time.' There are, for instance, the myriad different shapes that a pair of Y-fronts can take when pressed within strata (and yes, we do explore that very particular question in the book)."</p>



<p>“There are the tiny, but very distinctive – and very hard-wearing – fossil smoke particles that come out of our power stations. There are the strange stories of tea-bags, and of chicken feathers, non-stick pans, the minute patterns on silicon chips, the copper wires that wrap around the globe, and much more,” explained Professor Gabbott.</p>



<p>From fabric pressed into rock to microscopic patterns on electronic chips, these objects will provide a unique record of human civilization. Their presence in the geological archive will serve as evidence of a world driven by innovation, industry, and material consumption.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-on-wind-turbine-blades">Future research on wind turbine blades</h2>



<p>The study of technofossils is more than just a curiosity - it forces us to reconsider our relationship with waste and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-warming-is-accelerating-beyond-control-as-co2-levels-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">long-term environmental impact</a>. <p>Researchers found that infants born to teenage mothers in the state tend to have lower birth weights and are smaller for their gestational age compared to those born to adult mothers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-teen-pregnancy-rates-in-west-virginia">Teen pregnancy rates in West Virginia</h2>



<p>Researchers at <a href="https://www.wvu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">West Virginia University</a> analyzed data from Project Watch, a system that tracks all births in hospitals across the state. </p>



<p>The study examined 86,447 live births between 2018 and 2023, and found that 5,310 of these infants - about 6.15% - were born to teenage mothers.</p>



<p>By comparison, the national teen birth rate in 2022 stood at 1.36%. Rural counties had the highest rates, with Pendleton County reaching 14.38% and Boone, Mercer, and Hardy counties all surpassing 10%. The lowest rate, 2.76%, was recorded in Monongalia County.</p>



<p>According to Amna Umer, associate professor in the WVU School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics, the findings emphasize an urgent issue.</p>



<p>“We used the most current data and the findings underscore a significant issue in the state. The risk of teen birth is multifactorial," Umer explained.</p>



<p>"This study highlights the role of social, geographical and educational factors offering crucial insights for policymakers to expand comprehensive, evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention education and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/male-birth-control-scientists-develop-a-non-hormonal-pill-for-men/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birth control</a> access for at-risk teens.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-barriers-to-prenatal-care">Barriers to prenatal care</h2>



<p>Teenage mothers are less likely to receive adequate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-are-pregnancy-related-deaths-in-the-u-s-skyrocketing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">prenatal care</a>, a concern that has been confirmed by this study. Access to health services is a significant hurdle, especially for those in rural communities where medical facilities are scarce.</p>



<p>“Teenage mothers are a vulnerable population and there really isn’t a lot of research out there, especially on those living in rural areas,” said Rylee Childers, a third-year medical student from Morgantown, and the study's corresponding author.</p>



<p>“Our research identifies the hurdles that come with being a teenage mom and that’s important to not just people in rural areas, but also their primary care physicians and people in the medical field.”</p>



<p>Many factors contribute to this lack of care. Geographic distance and transportation barriers make it difficult for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nearly-half-of-u-s-teens-have-been-harassed-by-a-partner/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">teens</a> to attend regular checkups.</p>



<p>“There are some people in rural areas that have to drive three to four hours to see their obstetrician,” Childers confirmed.</p>



<p>“Additionally, a lot of teenage moms can’t drive yet. So, another adult would have to take off work which might be difficult if they work two jobs. There are a lot of different factors that maybe not everybody realizes because they’re not familiar with that population.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-addressing-teen-pregnancy">Addressing teen pregnancy</h2>



<p>Since most teen pregnancies are unintended, health care professionals have an opportunity to support prevention efforts. </p>



<p>The study suggests that providers could play a critical role in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sales-of-morning-after-pills-soar-after-new-years-day/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">contraception</a> counseling, navigating health care options, and ensuring confidentiality in patient care.</p>



<p>“I really hope the study starts a conversation about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/growing-health-gap-between-rural-and-urban-men-around-the-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rural health care</a> as a whole and especially about access to care and resources,” Childers said.</p>



<p>The findings also reflect broader disparities. The study found that teenage pregnancies were more common among individuals receiving Medicaid and among racial minority groups. </p>



<p>These findings align with previous research that points to economic and social inequalities as factors influencing teen birth rates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-moving-forward">Moving forward</h2>



<p>Childers and co-author Alexandra Richmond, a third-year medical student from Beckley, were selected to present their findings at the 2024 West Virginia Rural Health Conference.</p>



<p>For Childers, the research experience has been eye-opening.</p>



<p>“Working on this study opened my eyes to the entire process of research and understanding the health care disparities of the rural population as a whole,” she said. “It makes me think about how I can be a better provider for my patients.”</p>



<p>As discussions on teen pregnancy prevention and access to health care continue, studies like this provide valuable insights for policymakers, medical professionals, and community leaders striving to improve maternal and child health outcomes in West Virginia.</p>

<p>Scientists have searched for alien life for years, but space is huge, and technology has limits, making it hard to find answers. Traditionally, researchers have focused on finding planets similar to Earth, believing that conditions mirroring our own would be the best place to look for life.</p>



<p>However, a new study suggests that an entirely different type of planet could provide clearer <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-super-earth-hd-20794-found-just-20-light-years-away-is-best-target-yet-for-alien-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of living organisms</a>.</p>



<p>Instead of focusing on Earth-like planets, scientists have identified a unique biosignature gas that could reveal life in environments that are vastly different from our own.</p>



<p>This discovery shifts the search toward larger, ocean-covered planets with thick hydrogen atmospheres, known as hycean planets, where certain microbes could potentially thrive.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gases-could-be-key-indicators">Gases could be key indicators</h2>



<p>The recent study, led by researchers from the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a>, explored the unexpected gases that may signify life on exoplanets.</p>



<p>The research was focused on methyl halides, compounds made of a carbon and three hydrogen atoms bonded to a halogen, such as chlorine or bromine. </p>



<p>On Earth, these gases are produced by bacteria, marine algae, fungi, and certain plants.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hycean-planets-and-extraterrestrial-life">Hycean planets and extraterrestrial life</h2>



<p>Detecting these biosignatures presents challenges. Exoplanets similar to Earth are too small and dim for the James Webb Space Telescope (<a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/webb/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JWST</a>) to observe effectively. </p>



<p>Instead, researchers suggest targeting hycean planets, which are larger and in orbit around small red stars.</p>



<p>These bodies are covered in deep oceans, and enveloped in thick hydrogen atmospheres. Though humans cannot survive on these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/if-aliens-could-detect-earth-what-would-they-see/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planets</a>, some microbes might.</p>



<p>“Unlike an Earth-like planet, where atmospheric noise and telescope limitations make it difficult to detect biosignatures, hycean planets offer a much clearer signal,” explained Eddie Schwieterman, <a href="https://www.ucr.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCR</a> astrobiologist and co-author of the paper .</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-practical-approach-to-finding-life">Practical approach to finding life</h2>



<p>Scientists believe looking for methyl halides on hycean planets is a practical strategy, given current technology.</p>



<p>“Oxygen is currently difficult or impossible to detect on an Earth-like planet. However, methyl halides on hycean worlds offer a unique opportunity for detection with existing technology,” said Michaela Leung, UCR planetary scientist and first author of the paper.</p>



<p>Finding these gases could also be more efficient than searching for other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/finding-alien-life-may-be-as-simple-as-watching-microbes-move/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biosignatures</a>.</p>



<p>“One of the great benefits of looking for methyl halides is you could potentially find them in as few as 13 hours with James Webb. That is similar or lower, by a lot, to how much telescope time you’d need to find gases like oxygen or methane,” Leung said. </p>



<p>“Less time with the telescope means it’s less expensive.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-detecting-life-from-vast-distances">Detecting life from vast distances</h2>



<p>Methyl halides exist on Earth in small amounts, but hycean planets could have atmospheric conditions that allow these gases to accumulate. This makes detection easier from vast distances.</p>



<p>“These microbes, if we found them, would be anaerobic. They’d be adapted to a very different type of environment, and we can’t really conceive of what that looks like, except to say that these gases are a plausible output from their metabolism,” Schwieterman said.</p>



<p>The study builds on previous research into biosignature gases, including dimethyl sulfide. </p>



<p>Methyl halides stand out due to their strong absorption of infrared light and their ability to accumulate in hydrogen-rich <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/four-small-planets-discovered-orbiting-the-nearest-single-star-to-earth-barnards-star/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmospheres</a>.</p>



<p>While JWST is currently the most powerful tool for this search, future missions could enhance detection. </p>



<p>The proposed <a href="https://eu-life.eu/about/mission-values" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">European LIFE mission</a>, expected to launch in the 2040s, may confirm these biosignatures in less than a day.</p>



<p>“If we start finding methyl halides on multiple planets, it would suggest that microbial life is common across the universe,” Leung said. </p>



<p>“That would reshape our understanding of life’s distribution and the processes that lead to the origins of life.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-expanding-the-search-for-extraterrestrial-life">Expanding the search for extraterrestrial life</h2>



<p>Researchers plan to extend their investigations to other planetary types and biosignature gases. </p>



<p>They have already studied gases from extreme environments on Earth, such as the Salton Sea, which emits halogenated compounds like chloroform.</p>



<p>“We want to get measurements of other things produced in extreme <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-oxygen-in-the-deep-sea-may-hold-clues-about-alien-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environments</a> on Earth, which could be more common elsewhere,” Schwieterman said.</p>



<p>Direct sampling of exoplanet atmospheres remains out of reach, but advances in telescope technology and observational techniques could change that.</p>



<p>“Humans are not going to visit an exoplanet anytime soon,” Schwieterman said. “But knowing where to look, and what to look for, could be the first step in finding life beyond Earth.”</p>

<p>Chocolate is a comfort food for many people and a symbol of happiness in countless cultures. For years, farmers and scientists have collaborated to refine this treasured <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sustainable-farming-could-save-the-future-of-chocolate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plant</a>, but new evidence shows there is more to its story than meets the eye.</p>



<p>Experts have been analyzing genetic details that trace the cacao tree’s past to a surprising point in time. <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Daniel-Tineo" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Daniel Tineo</a>, from the National University Toribio Rodríguez de Mendoza, led a study that used chloroplast genome data to examine when and how <em>Theobroma cacao</em> diversified.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chocolate-s-place-in-nature">Chocolate’s place in nature</h2>



<p>Cacao belongs to the Malvaceae family, which also includes hibiscus and cotton. This group of plants has a history going back millions of years, and reflecting a long process of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chocolate-and-cocoa-prices-have-doubled-in-the-past-year-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">adaptation</a> and survival.</p>



<p>“It can be inferred that <em>T. cacao</em> diverged at approximately 7.55 Ma, and it is highly likely that <em>T. cacao</em> populations diversified during the Pliocene or Miocene,” explained Tineo. </p>



<p>Two main factors appear to have played a role in shaping the trees we see today. First, their <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/chloroplast-genome" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chloroplast genomes</a> carry signs of gradual change, which is common in species that extend across tropical regions. Second, environmental pressures likely promoted different genetic traits in various localities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-insights-to-save-chocolate">Genetic insights to save chocolate </h2>



<p>The chloroplast genome, often called <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/chloroplast-dna" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cpDNA</a>, is inherited in a predictable way in most plants. This trait gives scientists a clear view of family relationships, even within the same species.</p>



<p>One gene, named <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/srep08348" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ycf1</a>, turned out to be important because it showed more differences among cacao plants than other commonly studied genetic regions. By examining these differences, researchers hope to spot unique traits that may improve the flavor, resilience, or productivity of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cocoa-production-in-africa-is-under-extreme-climate-pressure/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cacao varieties</a>.</p>



<p>This approach might help breeders develop trees that survive better in changing climates. It may also allow them to detect disease-resistant lines, thus cutting down on the need for chemical treatments and on farm losses.</p>

<p>People on a fishing boat in the Aegean Sea had an unsettling experience when they noticed square waves creating a chessboard-like pattern all around them. This phenomenon, which quickly drew concern, is an unusual sight in the ocean.</p>



<p>Square waves, also known as a cross sea, are caused by two interacting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wave systems</a> traveling at different speeds and trajectories.</p>



<p>This activity was examined by <a href="https://iris.cnr.it/cris/rp/rp12539" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Silvio Davison</a> from the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (<a href="https://www.cnr.it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CNR</a>), Istituto di Scienze Marine (<a href="https://www.ismar.cnr.it/web-content/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ISMAR</a>) in Venice, Italy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-waves-the-basics">Understanding waves - the basics</h2>



<p>Ocean waves are nature’s way of keeping the sea in constant motion. Wind blows across the surface, transferring its energy to the water and creating waves that can travel thousands of miles.</p>



<p>The size and strength of a wave depend on three things: wind speed, how long the wind blows, and the distance it travels over open water (also called fetch). The longer and stronger these forces act, the bigger the waves get.</p>



<p>But not all waves come from the wind. Some, like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lake-tsunamis-are-an-emerging-climate-linked-hazard/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tsunamis</a>, are triggered by underwater earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landslides.</p>



<p>Then there are tidal waves, which are actually caused by the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun, not wind or sudden underwater events.</p>



<p>Next we have <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-extreme-rogue-wave-recorded-in-the-pacific-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rogue waves</a>, which are are massive, unpredictable walls of water that seem to appear out of nowhere. </p>



<p>Rogue waves happen due to complex interactions between ocean currents, wind, and smaller waves merging at just the right moment. Some can reach over 100 feet (30 meters) tall, powerful enough to sink even large ships.</p>



<p>Finally, we have square waves, which is the reason that we're all here right now.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-causes-behind-the-grid">Causes behind the grid</h2>



<p>Ocean dynamics can sometimes lead to waves from separate storms merging at sharp angles. When that overlap happens, the surface arranges itself into a repeating, square-like shape.</p>



<p>This can vanish quickly if the wind shifts or if one wave set loses energy. On other occasions, the pattern remains long enough for unwary surfers or vessels to run into trouble.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/marine-science/articles/10.3389/fmars.2022.1002806/full" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Researchers</a> have noted that such interactions are more common in open waters with multiple strong weather systems. </p>



<p>Storm tracks crossing each other can spark chaotic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-warming-broke-records-for-450-straight-days/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wave</a> fields that keep everyone on edge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-on-maritime-travel">Impact on maritime travel</h2>



<p>Large <a href="https://www.noaa.gov/jetstream/ocean/rip-currents/rip-current-safety" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cross seas</a> can reach heights of nearly 10 feet (3 meters), which is problematic for smaller boats. Faced with perpendicular waves, even a ship may roll unpredictably.</p>



<p>According to the <a href="https://business.esa.int/maritime" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">European Space Agency</a>, data collected between 1995 and 1999 showed that a large proportion of ship accidents occurred in cross seas. This highlights the threat posed by these shifting forces.</p>



<p>Sailors in these conditions report abrupt lurches and sudden veering. Cargo ships can also face cargo shifts when waves slam from two different angles.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-swimmers-should-avoid-square-waves">Swimmers should avoid square waves</h2>



<p>“Swimmers are at risk of being swept away, while boaters can experience navigational problems.” This note of caution from <a href="https://nhess.copernicus.org/articles/21/115/2021/nhess-21-115-2021.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">maritime observers</a> is especially relevant in unpredictable waters.</p>



<p>Opposing currents make it hard for people to fight the pull toward deeper areas. Sections of the sea floor can slope in unexpected ways, which compounds the danger.</p>



<p>Checkered wave events have drawn attention in certain tourist destinations. In places where the phenomenon is less intense, onlookers sometimes gather to watch the spectacle.</p>



<p>A noteworthy location is Île de Ré, near France, where visitors sometimes ascend a lighthouse to see the square pattern. They might not recognize that, out in deeper waters, the same sight can be much more powerful.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-precautions-and-advice">Precautions and advice</h2>



<p>Maritime authorities suggest that if a grid-like sea surface is spotted, smaller crafts should stay nearer to shore. Rapid changes can make it tough for seafarers to maneuver.</p>



<p>Some wave specialists recommend altering course to avoid perpendicular wave trains entirely, while others suggest that slowing down can minimize the stress on a vessel’s structure.</p>



<p>Swimmers are urged to exit the water if they notice conflicting currents. Strong swimmers often underestimate lateral pushes that can tire them quickly.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-technology-to-study-square-waves">New technology to study square waves</h2>



<p>Scientists are examining ways to forecast cross seas more accurately. They hope better models will help shipping routes avoid high-risk zones.</p>



<p>Advanced radar networks are collecting data on wave heights, angles, and directions. These tools might enhance warnings about any abrupt formation of intersecting waves.</p>

<p>Scientists have discovered that sleep may hold clues about potential memory issues years before any noticeable slips.</p>



<p>Researchers have been <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/13872877251319742" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">studying</a> electrical brain activity during sleep to search for early markers of cognitive decline. </p>



<p>Using artificial intelligence (AI) to check these signals, the team identified 85% of individuals who later developed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/one-night-of-lost-sleep-can-trigger-hidden-health-issues/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">thinking problems</a> with an overall accuracy of 77%.</p>



<p>The experts analyzed electroencephalography patterns that were recorded overnight. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-and-sleeping-brain-wave-patterns">AI and sleeping brain wave patterns</h2>



<p>The AI analysis uncovered faint differences in electrical rhythms between those who later developed memory issues and those who did not. </p>



<p>After looking at the results, Dr. Shahab Haghayegh from <a href="https://sleep.hms.harvard.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harvard Medical School</a> emphasized how this technology could transform early detection efforts.</p>



<p>“Using novel sophisticated analyses, advanced information theory tools, and AI, we can detect subtle changes in brain wave patterns during sleep that signal future cognitive impairment, offering a window of opportunity for intervention years before symptoms appear,” said Dr. Haghayegh.</p>

<p>When your brain is in high-performance mode - whether you're deeply focused, solving a tough puzzle, or even <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-deep-meditation-experiences-feel-timeless-no-past-no-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">meditating</a> - it’s buzzing with gamma activity. </p>



<p>Some researchers even call gamma waves the “aha!” frequency because they’re linked to moments of insight and heightened awareness.</p>



<p>Scientists believe gamma waves play a big role in keeping the brain sharp, but they’ve also noticed a drop in gamma activity in conditions like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-disruptions-could-signal-the-onset-of-alzheimers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alzheimer’s disease</a>. </p>



<p>That’s why some studies, like this one, are exploring whether stimulating gamma waves could help slow down cognitive decline.</p>

<p>This research team, and experts in general, have been especially interested in studying <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3084194/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gamma frequency bands</a>. </p>



<p>Gamma waves are linked to memory and attention, and changes in these ranges can signal trouble for brain health. </p>



<p>Disruption in gamma signals has been <a href="https://www.annualreviews.org/doi/10.1146/annurev-neuro-062111-150444" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">noted</a> in people with emerging cognitive impairment, hinting that small shifts in the speed or coordination of these bursts might appear earlier than more obvious signs of forgetfulness.</p>



<p>Researchers also point out that many normal sleepers pass through several stages each night, and there might be red flags across multiple stages. </p>



<p>Each category of sleep, including deep <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pupils-reveal-how-active-the-brain-is-even-during-sleep/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sleep</a>, carries particular brain-wave footprints that AI can analyze.</p>

<p>Over the past few years, scientists have been racing to find ways of predicting who might be at risk before significant thinking problems develop. </p>



<p>Many approaches involve advanced scans or fluid tests that can be costly. Brain activity recordings offer a simpler strategy with comfortable EEG headbands that people can wear at home.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-for-earlier-interventions">Potential for earlier interventions</h2>



<p>Sleep science has shown that deep rest is involved in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-helps-prevent-unwanted-memories-from-popping-up/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">learning</a> and memory. </p>



<p>Older adults frequently have changes in deep <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-timing-has-a-powerful-effect-on-our-mood/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sleep</a>, but not all shifts spell trouble. The trick lies in spotting patterns that hint at future impairment, which is precisely what these new methods aim to do.</p>



<p>“The new, FDA-approved treatments for Alzheimer’s disease are effective at the earlier stages of dementia, but not the more advanced stages,” said Dr. Kun Hu, physiologist in the Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders at <a href="https://www.brighamandwomens.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brigham and Women’s Hospital</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-on-sleep-and-memory">Future research on sleep and memory</h2>



<p>One vision for this research is wearable EEG devices that people might use on multiple nights. </p>



<p>The information collected over a week or more could yield deeper insights than a single test. Gathering more data might refine how precisely the system can spot troubling sleep signals before memory loss begins.</p>



<p>Another angle could be looking at whether the brain’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/meditation-rewires-the-emotional-centers-of-the-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">electrical patterns</a> can be safely adjusted overnight to maintain healthy thinking. </p>



<p>The researchers suggest that carefully timed stimulation during sleep may eventually help nudge wave activity in beneficial ways.</p>

<p>If these&nbsp;sleep&nbsp;signals can be reliably caught and confirmed, it would give individuals a better shot at staving off serious&nbsp;memory decline.</p>

<p>Many young adults struggle to put food on the table. What may seem like a temporary hardship could have lasting effects on health. A new study from Northwestern Medicine found that those who experienced food insecurity had a 41% higher chance of developing cardiovascular disease later in life. </p>



<p>Even after accounting for demographic and socioeconomic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tiny-molecule-could-shape-the-future-of-food-security/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">differences</a>, the risk remained significant.</p>



<p>Food insecurity affects one in eight households in the U.S. each year. It refers to the struggle to access enough nutritious food to maintain good health. This study confirms that this insecurity plays a direct role in increasing heart disease risk.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-food-insecurity-as-a-preventable-risk">Food insecurity as a preventable risk</h2>



<p>“We’ve known that food insecurity and heart disease often go hand in hand, but this study shows, for the first time, that food insecurity comes first,” said Dr. Jenny Jia, an instructor of general internal medicine and preventive medicine at <a href="https://www.nm.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Northwestern University</a> Feinberg School of Medicine and a Northwestern Medicine internist. </p>



<p>“That makes it a clear target for prevention — if we address food insecurity early, we may be able to reduce the burden of heart disease later.”</p>



<p>The research suggests that targeting food insecurity could prevent heart disease before it begins. Early intervention may lower future healthcare burdens and improve long-term <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/critical-food-crops-are-threatened-by-rising-temperatures-globally/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">health outcomes</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-food-access-among-young-adults">Food access among young adults</h2>



<p>The study was focused on data from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, which has tracked Black and white U.S. adults since the mid-1980s.</p>



<p>The researchers identified participants who reported food insecurity between 2000 and 2001, then compared their health outcomes over the next 20 years to those with stable food access.</p>



<p>Among the 3,616 participants, those who experienced food insecurity were 41% more likely to develop cardiovascular disease. Over two decades, 11% of food-insecure individuals developed heart disease, compared to only 6% of those who had adequate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coal-emissions-threaten-indias-food-security/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food</a> access.</p>



<p>“For a long time, there was this chicken-or-the-egg question - does food insecurity cause heart disease, or does heart disease make food insecurity worse because of the high cost of healthcare?” Jia said.</p>



<p>“By following people over two decades, we were able to show that food insecurity, on its own, significantly increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.”</p>



<p>The researchers discovered that people with a lack of food security were more likely to be Black and have lower levels of education compared to those with stable food access. This suggests that food insecurity is not just about access to meals but is also linked to broader social and economic inequalities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-screening-for-food-insecurity">Screening for food insecurity</h2>



<p>Jia noted that these findings highlight the importance of screening for food insecurity in healthcare settings. Identifying inadequate nutrition early and connecting patients with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/futuristic-food-supply-transforming-co2-into-protein/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">resources</a> could help reduce future health risks.</p>



<p>Primary care settings offer an ideal space for screening. “Because there tends to be a lot of trust between primary care providers and patients,” Jia explained. </p>



<p>She also suggests extending screenings to emergency rooms and specialties like cardiology. “The more we screen for it, the better,” Jia said.</p>



<p>“We need better strategies to help people once they screen positive. Do we connect them to social workers who can refer them to existing community programs? Should healthcare systems develop their own interventions? These are the next big questions.”</p>



<p>Food insecurity screenings can be conducted by internists, pediatricians, family doctors, nurses, and medical assistants. Even self-reported forms could help identify those at risk.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-effects-of-food-insecurity">Long-term effects of food insecurity </h2>



<p>Jia and her team plan to continue monitoring this group to understand the long-term <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/food-waste-crisis-why-u-s-goals-remain-out-of-reach/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">consequences</a> of food insecurity.</p>



<p>“It’s surprising to see heart disease in this group, which doesn’t include those 65 or older,” Jia said. “As they near 80, we plan to revisit the study to explore the evolving link to heart disease.”</p>



<p>This study was conducted with support from the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (<a href="https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHLBI</a>) in collaboration with institutions such as the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Northwestern University, the University of Minnesota, and the <a href="https://digital.ahrq.gov/organization/kaiser-foundation-research-institute" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kaiser Foundation Research Institute</a>.</p>

Food insecurity can lead to heart problems later in life

Many young adults struggle to put food on the table....

<p>Radio astronomers have discovered an unusual phenomenon in recent years. They detected radio pulses from the Milky Way that last from seconds to minutes. These pulses differ from those produced by known radio-emitting neutron stars or pulsars, which typically last only milliseconds. </p>



<p>Unlike conventional radio pulsars, these so-called long-period transients (LPTs) are periodic at timescales of tens of minutes to hours.</p>



<p>Scientists have proposed several theories for the origins of these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/january-2025-stargazing-a-parade-of-bright-planets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">signals</a>. However, until recently, no solid evidence existed to explain them.</p>



<p> Now, astronomers from the Netherlands and the UK have made a discovery that provides critical insights into these mysterious bursts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mysterious-star-signals-in-space">Mysterious star signals in space</h2>



<p>In 2022, researchers detected a series of periodic radio signals in space. To investigate the signals, a team of astronomers used an advanced imaging technique with the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR), a powerful international radio telescope.</p>



<p>The research was led by Dr. Iris de Ruiter from <a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The University of Sydney</a> and Dr. Kaustubh Rajwade from <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oxford</a>.</p>



<p>LOFAR operates like a massive radio camera, capturing detailed images of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/march-2025-stargazing-a-red-moon-and-a-vanishing-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sky</a> at low radio frequencies. This telescope allowed the team to pinpoint the exact location of the mysterious radio pulses, which appeared to come from an object about 1,600 light-years away.</p>



<p>To learn more, the scientists conducted follow-up observations using two optical telescopes: the <a href="https://mmto.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Multiple Mirror Telescope</a> in Arizona and the <a href="https://mcdonaldobservatory.org/research/telescopes/HET" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hobby-Eberly Telescope</a> in Texas. These observations revealed an unexpected finding.</p>



<p>The signals were not coming from a single star, as initially thought, but from a binary system - two <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/four-small-planets-discovered-orbiting-the-nearest-single-star-to-earth-barnards-star/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stars</a> orbiting each other. This discovery opened up new possibilities for understanding the source of these unusual radio emissions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-orbiting-stars-and-strange-radio-pulses">Orbiting stars and strange radio pulses</h2>



<p>The system consists of two stars orbiting a common center of gravity every 125 minutes. </p>



<p>One is a white dwarf, the remnant core of a Sun-like star that has lost its outer layers. The other is a red dwarf, a small and relatively cool <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-solar-system-once-drifted-through-orions-star-forming-region/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">star</a>. This star system lies in the direction of the constellation Ursa Major.</p>



<p>Scientists believe there are two possible explanations for how these stars generate long-lasting radio pulses. The bursts might originate from the intense magnetic field of the white dwarf. </p>



<p>Alternatively, the interaction between the magnetic fields of both stars could be responsible. Additional observations are necessary to determine the exact cause.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-expanding-the-search-for-lpts">Expanding the search for LPTs</h2>



<p>"Thanks to this discovery, we now know that compact objects other than neutron stars are capable of producing bright radio emission," said Dr. Rajwade, who leads the LOFAR-based search for LPTs and helped identify the periodic pattern in these pulses.</p>



<p>"We worked with experts from all kinds of astronomical disciplines," noted Dr. de Ruiter. "With different techniques and observations, we got a little closer to the solution step by step."</p>



<p>This discovery is not an isolated case. Over the past few years, astronomers have found about ten similar radio-emitting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/80-million-pixels-reveal-the-brilliance-of-a-star-cluster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">systems</a>. </p>



<p>However, none of these studies have been able to confirm whether these signals come from a white dwarf or a neutron star. The latest findings bring scientists closer to solving this puzzle.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-searching-for-more-star-radio-signals">Searching for more star radio signals</h2>



<p>Dr. Rajwade continues to analyze LOFAR data in search of more LPTs. </p>



<p>"This finding is very exciting! We are starting to find a few of these LPTs in our radio data. Each discovery is telling us something new about the extreme astrophysical objects that can create the radio emission we see," said Dr. Rajwade.</p>



<p>"For instance, the unexpected observation of coherent radio emission from the white dwarf in this study could help probe the evolution of magnetic fields in this type of star."</p>



<p>As scientists gather more data, they hope to uncover more of these mysterious signals and identify their sources. The study of long-period transients is still in its early stages, but each new discovery adds another piece to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/six-planet-system-hd110067-discovered-that-moves-in-perfect-mathematical-harmony/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmic puzzle</a>. </p>



<p>The findings could lead to a deeper understanding of how stars evolve, how magnetic fields shape the universe, and what other surprises are still waiting to be discovered.</p>

<p>This research directly challenges the belief that all processed foods contribute to weight gain. While ultra-processed animal products are strongly linked to increased body weight, processed plant-based foods do not appear to have the same negative effect.</p>



<p>To test the effects of a plant-based diet, researchers followed 244 overweight adults over 16 weeks. They split them into two groups. One group switched to a low-fat, plant-based <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hemp-seeds-could-be-a-game-changer-as-an-alternative-protein-source/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diet</a> with no restrictions on calories. </p>



<p>The other group? They didn’t change anything. No one counted calories or measured portions. The only difference was what they ate.</p>



<p>At the end, the vegan group lost an average of 13 pounds (5.9 kg). Their metabolism sped up. Their overall cardiometabolic health improved. Meanwhile, the control group - those who stuck with their regular diets - saw no significant change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-nova-classification">The NOVA Classification</h2>



<p>The&nbsp;NOVA system&nbsp;is a widely recognized method for categorizing foods based on their level of processing. It helps researchers and nutritionists analyze how different types of foods impact health. The system divides foods into four categories.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-category-1-unprocessed-foods">Category 1: Unprocessed foods</h3>



<p>These are foods in their natural state or with minimal alterations. Examples include fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes. </p>



<p>Any changes made to these foods - such as drying, freezing, or grinding - are only done to make them easier to store or prepare, without significantly altering their nutritional value.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-category-2-processed-ingredients">Category 2: Processed ingredients</h3>



<p>This category includes substances extracted from natural <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tiny-molecule-could-shape-the-future-of-food-security/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">foods</a>, such as salt, sugar, and vegetable oils. These ingredients are typically used to season or cook other foods but are not consumed on their own in significant amounts. </p>



<p>While they are not harmful in moderation, excessive intake - especially in the form of added sugar and refined oils - can contribute to health issues like obesity and heart disease.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-category-3-processed-foods">Category 3: Processed foods</h3>



<p>Processed foods are made by combining unprocessed foods (Category 1) with processed ingredients (Category 2). These include foods like canned vegetables with added salt, fresh bread, cheese, and smoked fish. </p>



<p>Processing in this category aims to enhance taste, texture, or shelf life without fundamentally changing the food’s natural composition.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-category-4-ultra-processed-foods">Category 4: Ultra-processed foods</h3>



<p>These foods undergo extensive industrial processing, often containing artificial additives, preservatives, and ingredients not typically found in a home kitchen. </p>



<p>Examples include packaged snacks, soft drinks, instant noodles, frozen meals, and processed meats like hot dogs and sausages.</p>



<p>Ultra-processed foods are designed for convenience and long shelf life but often contain high levels of unhealthy fats, sugars, and additives that may contribute to weight gain and chronic diseases.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-targeting-all-four-categories">Targeting all four categories </h3>



<p>Participants in the vegan group reduced their intake of animal products across all four NOVA categories while increasing their consumption of plant-based foods. </p>



<p>This shift contributed to their weight loss, suggesting that the reduction in animal-based foods played a bigger role than the level of processing of plant-based foods.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-food-factors-driving-weight-loss">Food factors driving weight loss</h2>



<p>So what exactly caused the weight loss? The researchers identified three major shifts that made the difference. First, as discussed above, participants who lost weight significantly cut back on processed animal products - things like smoked meats and processed cheese. </p>



<p>Second, they ate fewer unprocessed or minimally processed animal foods, such as milk, eggs, and lean meats. Finally, they dramatically reduced ultra-processed animal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/critical-food-crops-are-threatened-by-rising-temperatures-globally/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">foods</a> like fried chicken, sausage, and packaged dairy products.</p>



<p>The data showed that for every 50 grams per day reduction in processed animal food, participants lost about one kilogram (2.2 pounds) over the course of the study. The effect was even more pronounced with unprocessed animal foods - cutting 93 grams per day resulted in a kilogram of weight loss.</p>



<p>But the biggest impact? Ultra-processed animal foods. Reducing them by 120 grams daily led to a kilogram of weight loss in just 16 weeks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plant-based-processed-foods">Plant-based processed foods</h2>



<p>One of the most striking findings was that processed plant-based foods did not contribute to weight gain. </p>



<p>Unlike animal-based ultra-processed foods, plant-based versions such as soy milk, veggie burgers, and cereal did not have a significant association with increased body weight.</p>



<p>“Our new study is an important reminder that plant-based foods that are considered processed, like canned beans, cereal, and veggie burgers, are actually part of a healthy diet that can help fight America’s diet-related chronic disease epidemics,” said Dr. Kahleova.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plant-foods-support-weight-loss">Plant foods support weight loss</h2>



<p>A plant-based diet helps with weight loss in several ways. It is lower in fat and calories than diets with animal foods. High fiber content makes people feel full longer, so they eat less.</p>



<p>It also boosts metabolism. Vegan participants burned more calories after eating than those who ate animal foods. This helped them manage their weight.</p>



<p>Fiber is another key factor. It improves digestion, supports gut health, and reduces calorie absorption. Eating more fiber helps control appetite and maintain a healthy weight.</p>



<p>However, it is important o note that the study also had some limitations. Dietary intake was self-reported, which could introduce errors in food tracking. The participants were volunteers, meaning they may have been more motivated than the general population to follow dietary changes. </p>



<p>Additionally, the study only lasted 16 weeks, and long-term effects still need further investigation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-this-means-for-diet-and-health">What this means for diet and health</h2>



<p>The takeaway from this research is simple. Cutting animal products - whether you replace them with whole foods or processed plant-based alternatives - leads to weight loss.</p>



<p>For those looking to manage their weight, this suggests that focusing on food origin might be more important than avoiding all processed foods. </p>



<p>Choosing plant-based versions of familiar foods doesn’t just make the transition easier - it also supports better health outcomes.</p>

<p>The eel trade is driven by high demand and a limited supply. This combination makes eel trading highly profitable, but also controversial due to concerns about sustainability, illegal trafficking, and the impact on endangered species.</p>



<p>Despite strict regulations on European eel exports, illegal trafficking persists. Juvenile eels are smuggled out of the EU to Asia, where they are farmed and sold as food.</p>



<p>Recent research has focused on the European eel (<em>Anguilla anguilla</em>), which is a critically endangered species. Although its trade outside of the EU is highly restricted, large numbers of juvenile eels continue to reach Asian markets.</p>



<p>However, new findings suggest a shift in the global eel trade, with another species increasingly appearing in the market.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-targeting-the-american-eel">Targeting the American eel</h2>



<p>Researchers at <a href="https://www.yale-nus.edu.sg/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yale-NUS College</a> conducted a study to investigate the presence of endangered eel species in Singapore’s markets. The team purchased 327 eel products from 86 retailers, including supermarkets, restaurants, and wholesalers.</p>



<p>DNA barcoding revealed an unexpected result. While a few samples contained <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-protected-areas-lack-critical-fish-habitats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">European eels</a>, 70% of the tested products were identified as <em>Anguilla rostrata</em>, commonly known as the American eel.</p>



<p>Unlike its European counterpart, the American eel is not critically endangered. However, it is still classified as an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-is-the-future-of-the-endangered-species-act/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">endangered species</a> and faces significant threats from overfishing and habitat loss. </p>



<p>The study’s findings suggest that traders may be shifting focus from European eels to American eels due to increasing enforcement of EU export restrictions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-need-for-urgent-action">The need for urgent action</h2>



<p>These findings raise concerns about the future of the American eel population. Without stronger regulations, it could face the same fate as the European eel. </p>



<p>The research team has called for greater enforcement and monitoring of the American eel trade to prevent further population declines.</p>



<p>The study was conducted as part of Yale-NUS alumnus Joshua Choo’s Environmental Studies capstone project, under the supervision of Professor Benjamin Wainwright.</p>



<p>“It was sad to connect Singaporean unagi with the history of anguillid eel exploitation - where a crash in one anguillid’s stock repeatedly leads to another’s overexploitation and crash," said Choo.</p>



<p>"It was, however, heartening to see so many researchers and Indigenous groups invested in anguillid recovery in Liverpool - from Japan to Aotearoa to the EU and UK."</p>



<p>"There’s room for Southeast Asian perspectives in eel science - it’s important to protect tropical anguillids from the endangerment plaguing their temperate cousins, and to explore <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/effective-conservation-efforts-key-to-saving-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conservation</a> solutions for our food that can bypass profit-driven overexploitation."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mislabeling-and-wildlife-crime">Mislabeling and wildlife crime</h2>



<p>The study highlights the widespread mislabeling of eel products, often sold as generic "eel" or "unagi," which obscures their true species identity. This deceptive practice not only threatens biodiversity but also poses potential risks to human health and fuels illegal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-sunscreens-lose-effectiveness-and-become-harmful/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildlife trade</a>.</p>



<p>“The trade in eels is described as the greatest wildlife crime on Earth; it supports vast criminal networks that illegally traffic many hundreds of millions of glass eels (juvenile eels) to Asia each year,” said Professor Wainwright.</p>



<p>“What we show with this work is a likely shift in trade; this shift could be the consequence of EU enforced rules and regulations making it harder to smuggle the European eel to Asia, consequently suppliers have now shifted their focus to the less regulated American eel." </p>



<p>"If the American eel is to avoid a similar fate to that suffered by the European eels, it will be important to closely monitor the American eel trade and introduce rules and regulations designed to prevent overexploitation."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-eel-trade-and-wildlife-conservation">Eel trade and wildlife conservation</h2>



<p>The study’s findings highlight the need for proactive conservation measures. Stricter monitoring, better labelling practices, and increased awareness among consumers can help curb the illegal eel trade. </p>



<p>Consumers, researchers, and policymakers will need to work together to ensure that the global eel trade does not continue at the expense of biodiversity.</p>



<p>If no action is taken, the American eel could become the next critically endangered species, and follow the same tragic path as the European eel.</p>

<p>A new study suggests that children who consumed the least seafood at age seven exhibited lower prosocial behavior at both seven and nine years old. Prosocial behavior - such as friendliness, sharing, and altruism - appeared to be positively linked to fish consumption.</p>



<p>Seafood provides key nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, selenium, iodine, vitamin D, and choline. These nutrients contribute to a balanced diet and support brain development. </p>



<p>Experts recommend children eat at least two servings of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/boosting-seafood-production-while-protecting-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish</a> weekly, with one serving from oily fish like salmon or mackerel.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seafood-consumption-and-child-behavior">Seafood consumption and child behavior</h2>



<p>Researchers from the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk">University of Bristol</a> analyzed data from 5,969 participants in the Children of the 90s study. This long-term research received £5.2 million ($6.6 million) in new funding. The study adjusted data for social and demographic factors, ensuring accurate results.</p>



<p>Previous research was primarily focused on fish consumption during pregnancy. The effects were examined on babies rather than children’s ongoing development. </p>



<p>However, the current study highlights the importance of research on fish intake during childhood.</p>



<p>The findings showed that children who did not eat <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shrimp-crisis-alarming-virus-threatens-global-seafood-supplies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seafood</a> had a 35% higher risk of developing lower prosocial behavior at age seven and a 43% higher risk at age nine.</p>



<p>Those who consumed between 1-190g of seafood per week still had a 25-30% higher risk compared to those who met the NHS recommendation of at least 190g per week.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-concerns-about-seafood-consumption">Concerns about seafood consumption</h2>



<p>Many children in the study ate less seafood than NHS recommendations. One reason may be concerns about pollutants like mercury. </p>



<p>Parents often receive mixed messages about seafood safety, making dietary choices difficult. However, experts note that the benefits of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-eating-farmed-fish-may-be-safer-than-eating-fish-caught-in-the-wild/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish</a> consumption outweigh potential risks when intake follows guidelines.</p>



<p>Prosocial behavior develops between ages one and two. It becomes more complex as children grow. Encouraging these behaviors early supports social development and overall well-being. Good nutrition plays a vital role in this process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-essential-nutrients-in-brain-development">Essential nutrients in brain development</h2>



<p>Seafood is a primary source of omega-3 fatty acids like DHA and EPA, which support brain function and emotional well-being. While the body can produce small amounts of DHA from other sources, dietary intake is necessary to maintain optimal levels.</p>



<p>Iodine and selenium also contribute to neurodevelopment. Iodine plays a crucial role in thyroid hormone production, which regulates brain growth. </p>



<p>Selenium supports antioxidant functions and helps with thyroid hormone metabolism. Choline aids in neurotransmitter production, which impacts memory and cognitive function. Vitamin D supports calcium absorption and immune function, contributing to overall <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-are-widespread-in-the-seafood-we-eat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">health</a>.</p>



<p>The study measured prosocial behavior using questionnaires. Parents reported their child’s social interactions at ages seven and nine. The results showed that children who ate more seafood displayed better social behavior.</p>



<p>The researchers also investigated a possible link between seafood intake and IQ. However, they found no significant connection between fish consumption and intelligence.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seafood-and-child-development">Seafood and child development</h2>



<p>"When there’s conflicting advice, it can be difficult to know what the best course of action is. Our previous studies have shown that eating fish during pregnancy in the UK can have a positive effect on child development," noted Dr. Caroline Taylor, associate professor of nutrition at the University of Bristol.</p>



<p>"This has also been found in countries where fish intakes are higher than they are here, so encouraging fish consumption is likely to have a positive effect on child development."</p>



<p>Dr. Taylor said the evidence to link fish consumption in children with the best behavioral development is clear, and that her team strongly recommends for parents to provide at least two portions of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plastic-particles-found-in-99-of-tested-seafood-samples/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish</a> a week in accordance with NHS guidelines. </p>



<p>"We hope these research findings empower parents with the knowledge to give their children the best start in life.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-considerations">Public health considerations</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.nhs.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHS</a> advises that children should consume two portions of seafood per week, including one portion of oily fish. However, girls should have no more than two portions of oily fish per week due to concerns about dioxins and PCBs, which can accumulate in the body over time.</p>



<p>The FAO/WHO has acknowledged the benefits of seafood at all life stages. However, they also stress the need for region-specific guidelines based on local fish contamination levels, nutrient content, and dietary patterns.</p>



<p>Data from the <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-diet-and-nutrition-survey" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey</a> show that children consume less than the recommended amount of seafood. Many factors contribute to this, including concerns about mercury, taste preferences, cost, and limited availability. </p>



<p>Addressing these barriers through public health campaigns could help improve childhood nutrition.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-study-continues-nbsp">Long-term study continues&nbsp;</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/alspac/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Children of the 90s</a> study has played a major role in health research for over three decades. Founded by Professor Jean Golding in the early 1990s, the study has contributed to more than 3,000 research papers.</p>



<p>With the recent £5.2 million funding boost, the study will continue its research. The focus will now extend to the third generation of participants. These efforts will provide valuable insights into child health and development for years to come.</p>

<p>The research team discovered that pollution exposure during the final year before death demonstrated the strongest association with brain changes. This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-vulnerability-patterns"><strong>Genetic vulnerability patterns</strong></h2>



<p>Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-implications"><strong>Public health implications</strong></h2>



<p>These findings, published in <em><a href="https://www.neurology.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neurology</a></em>, underscore the critical importance of air quality regulations in urban planning. <p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet <em>Archaeopteris</em>: the first modern tree</h2>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-today-s-climate">Lessons for today's climate</h2>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
