<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-links-flavor-and-smell">How the brain links flavor and smell</h2>



<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-flavor-and-smell-matter">Why flavor and smell matter</h2>



<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>



<p>This suggests that our flavor experiences are dynamic, adapting with exposure, context, and internal states such as hunger, mood, or attention. </p>



<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-affect-health">How flavor and smell affect health</h2>



<p>This research reframes flavor as a deeply integrated brain process. Smell and taste are not separate streams but overlapping codes that can trick the brain into tasting without tasting.</p>



<p>Beyond solving everyday mysteries like sweet-tasting flavored water, the work raises questions about cravings, overeating, and how our diets are shaped by environments filled with powerful aromas. </p>



<p>The research also suggests that everyday exposure to food-related smells in supermarkets, restaurants, offices, and even advertising spaces may influence us more than we realize.</p>



<p>These aromas may prime the brain to expect certain tastes, creating a loop where scent alone can nudge us toward food choices we might not otherwise make. </p>



<p>Over time, this subtle influence could shape eating habits, nutritional patterns, and even health outcomes, revealing how deeply our sensory world directs behavior long before conscious decisions take place.</p>

<p>While sleep aids exist, they come with side effects, leaving many searching for natural solutions. Could exercise be the answer?</p>



<p>A new analysis suggests that physical activity plays a crucial role in sleep quality. But not all movement is created equal. Among various exercise types, one stands out as particularly effective - strength training.</p>



<p>The results are clear: lifting weights, performing push-ups, and engaging in resistance <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-reduces-the-risk-of-brain-diseases-by-up-to-54-percent/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exercises</a> may be the key to deeper, more restful sleep in older adults.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-sleep-worsens-with-age">Why sleep worsens with age</h2>



<p>As people age, sleep gets harder. Something once easy can turn into a nightly challenge. Studies show that about one in five older adults has insomnia, which causes more than just tiredness.</p>



<p>Sleep deprivation doesn’t just cause fatigue; it has been linked to cognitive decline, cardiovascular disease, and weakened immune function.</p>



<p>Even for those without underlying health issues, poor sleep disrupts daily life. Concentration slips, energy levels plummet, and mood swings become frequent.</p>



<p>Older adults who still work may see their productivity decline, while those enjoying retirement may feel too exhausted to fully engage in social <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/small-doses-of-exercise-can-greatly-reduce-dementia-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">activities</a>. The consequences ripple far and wide, making sleep quality a major concern.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-best-type-of-exercise">Best type of exercise</h2>



<p>Understanding that exercise could hold the key to better sleep, researchers set out to determine which type had the greatest impact. They scoured medical databases, analyzing clinical trials published up to October 2022. Their focus? Adults formally diagnosed with insomnia.</p>



<p>The studies that were examined by the team compared different forms of exercise against routine daily activities, usual care, and other non-exercise interventions. To measure sleep quality, the researchers relied on the Global Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (GPSQI), a widely recognized tool in sleep research.</p>



<p>Across these studies, a variety of exercises emerged. Some focused on aerobic activities like cycling, dancing, swimming, brisk walking, and even gardening. Others examined the effects of resistance training, including exercises with weights, push-ups, and planks.</p>



<p>Balance training featured step-ups and heel-to-toe walking, while flexibility exercises involved gymnastics, yoga, and Pilates. A few studies combined multiple <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/step-and-time-based-exercise-goals-are-equally-beneficial/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exercise</a> types into a single regimen.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-who-participated-in-the-studies">Who participated in the studies?</h2>



<p>The analysis included data from 24 studies, encompassing 2,045 older adults with an average age of 70.</p>



<p>These studies spanned the globe, with research conducted in Asia, North America, South America, and Europe. Some studies were community-based, while others focused on nursing home residents.</p>



<p>Exercise programs varied significantly. Some involved mild activity, while others pushed participants into moderate-intensity workouts. On average, sessions lasted just over 50 minutes and were performed two to three times per week. </p>



<p>Most programs continued for about 14 weeks, long enough to assess meaningful changes in sleep patterns.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strength-training-improves-sleep">Strength training improves sleep</h2>



<p>At first glance, aerobic exercise seemed promising. When analyzed alone, it improved sleep quality by 4.35 points on the GPSQI. Combination exercise also showed positive effects, though slightly less impressive, with an improvement of 2.35 points.</p>



<p>Then came the deeper analysis. Using an advanced statistical method known as network meta-analysis, the researchers compared multiple exercise types simultaneously, accounting for direct and indirect effects.</p>



<p>The results flipped the script. Strength training took the lead, improving sleep quality by a remarkable 5.75 points - far surpassing all other exercise types.</p>



<p>Aerobic exercise, while still beneficial, improved sleep by 3.76 points. Combination exercises, which incorporated multiple techniques, improved it by 2.54 points. </p>



<p>Sleep education, a non-exercise intervention that researchers examined as a comparison, showed some effectiveness but fell short of the impact seen with strength training.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-strength-training-works">Why strength training works</h2>



<p>The impact of resistance exercises on sleep may not be immediately obvious. Yet, a closer look reveals multiple pathways through which strength training promotes better rest.</p>



<p>One explanation lies in hormonal balance. Strength training influences the production of cortisol and melatonin, two hormones critical to sleep regulation. </p>



<p>It also reduces stress, a common trigger for insomnia. Physically, stronger muscles contribute to better posture, reduced joint pain, and improved mobility - all factors that can make sleep more comfortable.</p>



<p>Unlike aerobic workouts, which primarily elevate heart rate, strength training activates deep muscular and neurological processes. The controlled, intentional nature of these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-it-comes-to-practice-and-learning-variety-is-key/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exercises</a> may help calm the nervous system, preparing the body for rest.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-sleep-education">Role of sleep education</h2>



<p>Interestingly, sleep education emerged as the strongest non-exercise <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/long-term-exercise-can-make-belly-fat-healthy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">intervention</a> in this analysis. However, its effectiveness varied across studies. </p>



<p>Some programs focused on relaxation techniques, while others provided guidance on sleep hygiene, such as maintaining a consistent bedtime or limiting screen exposure before bed.</p>



<p>While sleep education did show benefits, it still didn’t match the power of physical exercise - especially resistance training. The researchers emphasized that while knowledge is valuable, action is more effective.</p>



<p>Understanding how to sleep better is one thing; engaging in a structured exercise routine that actively enhances sleep is another.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-and-considerations">Challenges and considerations</h2>



<p>Despite the strong evidence supporting strength training, the researchers acknowledged limitations in their analysis. </p>



<p>The studies they reviewed varied in design, making it difficult to compare results perfectly. Some lacked precise details about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mindfulness-training-improves-mental-resilience/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exercise</a> intensity, while others didn’t focus on specific types of resistance training.</p>



<p>Another challenge is accessibility. Strength training requires proper technique to avoid injury, and not all older adults feel comfortable using weights. Those with joint issues or mobility limitations may find certain movements difficult. </p>



<p>However, modifications exist, and even low-impact resistance exercises can provide benefits.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strength-training-a-simple-solution">Strength training: A simple solution</h2>



<p>At the end of their analysis, the researchers reached a firm conclusion. </p>



<p>“Exercise, particularly strengthening exercise and aerobic exercise, is beneficial for enhancing subjective sleep quality at a clinically significant level compared with normal activities,” they noted.</p>



<p>For older adults searching for a natural way to combat insomnia, strength training may be the missing piece. A simple routine - whether lifting light weights, performing bodyweight exercises, or using resistance bands - could lead to deeper sleep, improved energy, and better overall well-being.</p>

<p>Earth’s climate has never stayed the same. Over millions of years, it has changed due to forces both deep inside the planet and far beyond it. Heat from within the Earth, shifting orbits around the Sun, and volcanic eruptions all shape the world we live in. </p>



<p>Scientists looked into past records to understand how Earth’s climate has changed. They studied old rocks and fossils to find clues linking climate shifts to big <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/axial-seamount-large-underwater-volcano-off-us-coast-will-likely-erupt-in-2025/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">volcanic eruptions</a>. These natural records reveal how Earth’s environment has evolved over time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forces-that-shape-earth-s-climate">Forces that shape Earth's climate</h2>



<p>The inside of the Earth produces heat because some elements, like uranium, break down naturally over time. This process is called radioactive decay. </p>



<p>Along with this, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-next-big-volcano-eruption-will-cause-global-chaos-climate-impact/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">volcanoes</a> release heat and gases such as sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) into the air. These gases can affect the climate by changing the temperature and composition of the atmosphere.</p>



<p>Earth doesn’t follow the exact same path around the Sun forever. Its orbit shifts slightly over time, changing how much sunlight reaches different parts of the planet. This affects the seasons, sometimes making them longer, shorter, warmer, or cooler.</p>



<p>These two processes - heat from inside the Earth and changes in sunlight - work together in complicated ways. Over thousands to millions of years, they affect the climate, shaping long-term patterns of temperature, weather, and ocean conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-s-geological-climate-records">Earth's geological climate records</h2>



<p>Study lead author Thomas Westerhold is a researcher at <a href="https://www.marum.de/en/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MARUM</a> – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen.</p>



<p>“Just like a metronome, we used the rhythmic changes in solar insolation imprinted in geological data to synchronize geological climate archives from the South Atlantic and the Northwest Pacific,” said Westerhold.</p>



<p>”These key records span the last million years of the Cretaceous and are synchronized down to 5,000 years or less, geologically a blink of an eye 66 million years ago.”</p>



<p>Accurately aligning geological records allows scientists to identify simultaneous climate events across regions. </p>



<p>“So, we had the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melting-ice-in-antarctica-could-wake-sleeping-volcanoes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">geological records</a> perfectly lined up in time, and observed that two major changes in climate and biota occurred at the same time in both oceans. But we had to find a way to test if these changes are caused by large-scale volcanic eruptions related to the Deccan Traps in India,” said Westerhold.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deccan-traps-and-their-impact">Deccan traps and their impact</h2>



<p>In western India, there is a massive area of solidified lava called the Deccan Traps. The lava layers are extremely thick, reaching up to two kilometers in some places. </p>



<p>Scientists call this kind of large-scale volcanic activity a&nbsp;Large Igneous Province, which means a region covered by huge amounts of volcanic rock formed from repeated eruptions.</p>



<p>Huge volcanic eruptions in Earth's past have greatly affected life. When volcanoes erupt this much, they release large amounts of gases like CO₂ and SO₂. </p>



<p>These gases can change the air and oceans, impacting Earth's climate, air quality, and sea life. Sometimes, these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-and-trees-predict-volcano-eruptions-when-viewed-from-space-satellites/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">changes</a> were so severe that they caused mass extinctions, wiping out many species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-volcanic-influence-in-ocean-records">Volcanic influence in ocean records</h2>



<p>“The formation of the flood basalts and its subsequent weathering will leave a geochemical fingerprint in the ocean,“ said study co-author Junichiro Kuroda (<a href="https://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University Tokyo</a>, Japan), who conducted the geochemical analyses.</p>



<p>“Therefore, we measured the Osmium isotope composition of the South Atlantic and the Northwest Pacific deposits. They should show the same fingerprint at the same time.”</p>



<p>The study revealed two distinct shifts in the Osmium isotope composition in both oceans. These shifts aligned with major eruption phases of the Deccan Traps in the late Cretaceous period.</p>



<p>“To our surprise we found two steps in the Osmium isotope composition in both oceans contemporaneous with major eruption phases of the Deccan Traps in the latest Cretaceous. And even more surprising those steps had different impacts on the environment as recorded by fossil remains in the drill cores,” said Westerhold.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-measuring-massive-volcano-events">Measuring massive volcano events</h2>



<p>Scientists used advanced models to make sense of the data. They created simulations to see how volcanic gases affected Earth’s climate. These models helped them estimate how big the eruptions were and how they changed the atmosphere.</p>



<p>“The volume of the erupted flood basalt must have been much larger than previously thought during this early phase of Deccan Trap volcanism. And the related distinct emissions of carbon and sulfur dioxide had diverse effects on the global climate system,” explained Don Penman (<a href="https://www.usu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Utah State University</a>, USA) who did the geochemical modeling.</p>



<p>According to these findings, a significant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/supervolcano-italy-solfatara-crater-phlegraean-fields-shows-signs-of-waking-up/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">eruption</a> phase occurred 66.288 million years ago, independently dated using radioisotopic methods. This phase likely included an initial pulse of sulfur-rich eruptions, causing ecological stress both locally and globally. </p>



<p>These discoveries refine our understanding of how massive volcanic events influence Earth's climate and ecosystems over geological timescales.</p>

<p>But GLP-1 doesn’t stop there - it also slows digestion and sends signals to your brain that make you feel full, which helps prevent overeating.</p>

<p>In a recent publication, the authors state, “A growing body of research has revealed that our cravings for dietary components originate from signals sent from the gut, a key organ in transmitting dietary preferences.” </p>



<p>This highlights the dynamic interaction between diet and gut microbes.</p>



<p>They also note, “However, which genes, gut flora, and metabolites in the gut microenvironment are involved in the regulation of sugar preference is currently unclear.” </p>



<p>To understand this better, some studies have explored the role of hormones in sugar cravings, especially in individuals with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/type-2-diabetes-heightens-alzheimers-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">type 2 diabetes</a>. </p>



<p>There is also evidence suggesting that those with certain genetic variations tied to FGF21 are about 20% more likely to consume high amounts of sweet foods.</p>

<p>Astronauts have long dealt with rashes and immune hiccups while circling above Earth. Certain studies have implicated changes in their immune system when they leave our planet’s usual air, water, and soil behind.</p>



<p>Recent research work, published in the journal <em>Cell</em>, suggests that a super-sanitized spaceship may be one reason for these issues.</p>



<p>After carefully sampling the International Space Station (<a href="https://www.nasa.gov/international-space-station/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ISS</a>), co-first authors <a href="https://www.rodolfosalido.com/bio-cv" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rodolfo A. Salido</a> and <a href="https://profiles.ucsd.edu/haoqi.zhao">Haoqi Nina Zhao</a> from the University of California, San Diego (<a href="https://ucsd.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC San Diego</a>), and their team, found that the station lacks many natural microbes that people regularly encounter on Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-space-and-earth-s-microbes">Space and Earth's microbes</h2>



<p>Many scientists think that a broad range of tiny organisms keeps our bodies well-tuned. If people spend months in a place with only human-associated germs, they might miss out on some beneficial exposure.</p>



<p>Soil-based microbes, for example, have been <a href="https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/nejmoa1508749" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">linked</a> to healthy immune responses in children who grow up around farmland.</p>



<p>“We noticed that the abundance of disinfectant on the surface of the International Space Station is highly correlated with the microbiome diversity at different locations on the space station,” said Zhao. </p>



<p>When the station is scrubbed and disinfected often, fewer natural bacteria remain. </p>

<p>“Future built environments, including space stations, could benefit from intentionally fostering diverse microbial communities that better mimic the natural microbial exposures <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasas-new-ezie-mission-will-study-earths-auroras-from-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">experienced on Earth</a>, rather than relying on highly sanitized spaces,” said Salido.</p>



<p>The authors pointed out that this goes beyond just avoiding harsh cleaning products. </p>



<p>They suggest that introducing certain environmental organisms might help astronauts fight off skin irritations and general inflammation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-over-sanitized-space-stations">Over-sanitized space stations</h2>



<p>Those involved in the study note that the ISS samples had very few outdoor microbes. <p>Recently, a team of researchers at <a href="https://www.osaka-u.ac.jp/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Osaka University</a> in Japan might have brought us closer to genuinely reversing the aging process at a cellular level.</p>

<p>Titanium is a metal with exceptional strength and resistance to corrosion, making it useful for many engineering applications. However, its energy-intensive extraction process has always made it too costly to use extensively. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solar-energy-and-titanium">Solar energy and titanium</h2>



<p>Scientists from the <a href="https://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tokyo</a> have now designed a process of extraction that may finally break down the cost barrier of titanium and render it more accessible for numerous applications, including <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/harnessing-solar-power/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solar energy</a>. </p>



<p>The results of this research, published in <em><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-49085-4">Nature Communications</a></em>, have far-reaching implications, not just for the renewable energy industry, but also for other fields that make use of titanium, such as the aerospace industry and medical technologies.</p>



<p>“Industry mass-produces iron and aluminum metal - but not titanium metal, because of the expense of removing the oxygen from the ore,” explained Toru H. Okabe, lead author of the study. </p>



<p>“We use an innovative technology based on rare-earth metals that removes oxygen from titanium to 0.02% on a per-mass basis.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-titanium-cost-no-longer-a-problem">Titanium cost no longer a problem </h2>



<p>In order to remove oxygen from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/titanium-is-a-promising-and-abundant-resource-for-carbon-capture/">titanium</a> ore and generate a purer metal, high energy input is needed. This has made titanium prohibitively expensive for many industrial applications. </p>



<p>However, the new Japanese extraction process makes use of another rare element, namely yttrium. This metal is commonly used in a range of technologies, including LED screens and superconductors. </p>



<p>The researchers reacted molten titanium with yttrium metal to produce a low-cost, solid, de-oxygenated titanium alloy.</p>



<p>Despite the fact that the new process is far more cost-effective, yttrium also comes with its drawbacks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-yttrium-is-a-blessing-and-a-curse">Yttrium is a blessing and a curse</h2>



<p>Yttrium is clearly a huge asset when used to purify titanium, but a problem arises because the resulting product contains up to 1% yttrium, which could potentially affect the titanium's durability and resistance to corrosion.</p>



<p>These effects could pose a significant challenge to sectors like electronics and aerospace. </p>



<p>Nonetheless, efforts are underway to resolve these issues and reduce the contamination by yttrium while still preserving the cost-saving benefits. In this way, countless additional applications for cheaper titanium could be unlocked.</p>

<p>Nearly a century ago, some astronomers proposed that we might be seeing only half the story of the universe's expansion. A lesser-known concept, called the “tired light” theory, proposed that photons could lose energy as they travel through space, causing what looks like expanding motion. </p>



<p>Some experts have speculated that a possible spin of the universe could influence our perception of cosmic movement. However, the majority of experts support the Big Bang model, citing observations of galaxies moving away from us at rapid speeds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-our-perception-of-universe-expansion">Our perception of universe expansion </h2>



<p>Lior Shamir, an associate professor at <a href="https://www.k-state.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kansas State University</a>, has brought this old theory back into focus. His recent work suggests that a fresh look at <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/webb/multimedia/images/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JWST images</a> might offer a different perspective on what we perceive as the expansion of the universe.</p>



<p>Scientists have noted that JWST observations reveal galaxies that seem older than the universe itself, if based on traditional timelines. This contradicts the idea that everything condensed from a single point 13.8 billion years ago.</p>



<p>“The JWST provided deep images of the very early universe, but instead of showing an infant early universe…it showed large and mature galaxies,” said Professor Shamir.</p>



<p>Big Bang supporters are not all convinced to abandon their view. However, a portion of the astronomy community feels that such data call for a second glance at less conventional models. A few wonder whether our accepted view of cosmic expansion oversimplifies the story.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-could-light-be-tricking-us">Could light be tricking us?</h2>



<p>“The tired light theory was largely neglected, as astronomers adopted the Big Bang theory as the consensus model,” explained Professor Shamir. He has offered fresh <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2571-712X/7/3/41" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence</a> supporting the long-dismissed concept. </p>



<p>If <a href="https://www.energy.gov/science/doe-explainsphotons" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">photons</a> gradually lose energy, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/largest-structure-in-universe-is-1-4-billion-light-years-long-quipu-superstructure/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">universal</a> timeline we use might be off. That helps explain why galaxies appear so developed at early stages. Light might not always be a perfect gauge of distance if it changes subtly on the way.</p>



<p>Recent <a href="https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/1988CeMec..45...31B/abstract" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">data</a> shows that almost all galaxies in the early universe displayed by JWST appear to rotate in the same direction. Shamir’s analysis found up to 50% more galaxies swirling one way, a difference that can even be seen by a non-expert scanning the images. </p>



<p>He suggests this anomaly could mean the universe was “born” spinning or that we might live inside a colossal black hole.</p>



<p>Professor Shamir also noted that this rotational imbalance might be due to the Earth’s own motion. Because of <a href="https://courses.lumenlearning.com/suny-physics/chapter/6-1-rotation-angle-and-angular-velocity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rotational velocity</a>, galaxies moving the opposite way relative to the Milky Way may appear brighter, so we see more of them.</p>



<p>Shamir’s team measured redshift in over 30,000 galaxies and found that the gap becomes larger at greater distances.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-does-the-universe-spin">Does the universe spin?</h2>



<p>The "axis of evil" in cosmology refers to unexpected alignments in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, suggesting a preferred direction in the universe. </p>



<p>This is at odds with the widely accepted cosmological principle, which states that the universe should appear isotropic (the same in all directions) on large scales.</p>



<p>Some researchers speculate that this alignment could be a statistical fluke, an artifact of our observational methods, or even an indication of new physics beyond the standard model of cosmology. Others propose that it might hint at a deeper structure in the universe, challenging the assumption of uniformity.</p>



<p>Another theory entertains the possibility of a <a href="https://research.kuleuven.be/portal/en/project/3E230655" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">holographic universe</a>, pointing out that if the universe does have a giant spin, it is not unlike a black hole’s interior. </p>



<p>This concept, commonly referred to as black hole cosmology, has circulated in physics circles for years, and Professor Shamir’s research brings it back into focus.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-distance-measurements-may-shift">Distance measurements may shift</h2>



<p>Shamir’s work also suggests that measurements of galaxies have overlooked the Milky Way’s rotational speed. If galaxies rotating opposite to the Milky Way show stronger brightness due to <a href="https://www.grc.nasa.gov/www/k-12/airplane/doppler.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Doppler effects</a>, the difference could alter assumptions about how far away they are.</p>



<p>“Because the rotational velocity of the Earth relative to the galaxies is constant, the reason for the difference can be the distance of the galaxies from Earth,” noted Professor Shamir.</p>



<p>If that holds up, we may have to recalibrate large portions of existing data, which could reconcile other mysteries such as the mismatch in expansion rates and sightings of hefty <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/powerful-forces-have-made-the-structure-of-the-universe-messier/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies</a> in early epochs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gaps-in-the-big-bang-theory">Gaps in the Big Bang theory</h2>



<p>Not everyone is ready to rewrite the textbooks, but some scientists see these observations as a nudge to keep an open mind. </p>



<p>A few have always <a href="https://vernbender.com/key-points-about-criticisms-of-the-big-bang-theory-2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">contended</a> that the Big Bang theory left unexplained gaps, suggesting that light from distant galaxies may have simply lost energy over time. Shamir’s study echoes that question.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“If the Big Bang happened as scientists initially believed, these galaxies are older than the universe itself,” said Shamir. </p>



<p>To him, that’s one more signal that alternative routes in cosmology deserve attention. An increasing number of researchers are questioning whether we made a basic error about universal expansion.</p>



<p>Whether or not the Big Bang needs a full overhaul is up for debate. But the evidence keeps stacking up that current distance yardsticks might be incomplete. </p>



<p>Ultimately, the research indicates that we may yet discover hidden nuances in redshift data or find that the cosmos has had a built-in spin from the start.</p>

Is the universe spinning? Strange galaxy motion suggests that it is

Nearly a century ago, some astronomers proposed that we might...

<p>Space is filled with breathtaking sights and hidden processes that shape stars and planets. One of these fascinating places is Lynds 483 (L483), a massive cloud of gas and dust where two young stars are forming.</p>



<p>The twin stars are growing, constantly changing, and shaping their surroundings. NASA’s <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/webb/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">James Webb Space Telescope</a> has captured an incredibly detailed image of their stellar nursery, giving us a rare chance to witness its evolution.</p>



<p>For thousands of years, the young <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fluffy-molecular-clouds-may-change-our-understanding-of-star-formation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stars</a> have been throwing out streams of material. These jets collide, spread, and form glowing patterns in space. </p>



<p>What looks like twin flames in the image are actually energetic bursts from the forming stars, creating a scene that shifts and transforms over time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-intense-ejections-of-gas-and-dust">Intense ejections of gas and dust</h2>



<p>Over time, the young stars have periodically expelled gas and dust into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/planet-forming-disks-surrounding-stars-often-last-much-longer-than-expected/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">space</a>. Some ejections emerge as tight, fast jets, while others spread more slowly. </p>



<p>When the young stars throw out gas and dust, the new bursts crash into older ones that were already there. Since some areas are thicker and some are thinner, the material spreads in different ways, creating unique patterns in space.</p>



<p>These collisions also cause chemical reactions. The energy from the crashes makes atoms and molecules mix and change. </p>



<p>This leads to the formation of new substances like carbon monoxide, methanol, and other organic molecules. These chemicals could later help in the formation of planets and other space objects.</p>



<p>After approximately a million years, the stars will complete their formation. The intense ejections will stop, and the luminous gas and dust structures will fade, leaving behind a much clearer scene.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-thick-dust-hides-the-twin-stars">Thick dust hides the twin stars</h2>



<p>At the heart of the image, a thin, vertical cloud forms an hourglass-like structure. The stars responsible for this dramatic display remain shrouded in an opaque disk of cold gas and dust. </p>



<p>Surrounding this disk, where the dust is thinner, the stars' light escapes, illuminating the surrounding material in brilliant shades of orange, blue, and purple.</p>



<p>The contrast between illuminated and shadowed areas is striking. Some regions appear empty, but they actually contain dense clouds that block most of the starlight. </p>



<p>In these areas, Webb's sensitive near-infrared camera has detected distant <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/messier-82-unlocking-the-mysteries-of-star-formation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stars</a> as faint, orange pinpoints shining through the thick dust. Where the dust is less obstructive, stars appear in bright white and shades of blue.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stellar-jets-and-star-evolution">Stellar jets and star evolution</h2>



<p>The stars' ejections have created complex and sometimes twisted structures. Toward the top right of the image, a prominent orange arc marks a shock front, where the expelled material has encountered denser gas, slowing its movement. </p>



<p>Just below this arc, orange and pink regions intertwine, forming a tangled pattern that astronomers are eager to study further.</p>



<p>The lower section of the image appears denser, with thick gas and dust. Tiny purple pillars emerge from this region, pointing toward the central <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stunning-images-of-baby-planets-reveal-surprising-growth-spurts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stars</a>. These pillars have resisted the force of stellar winds because their material is dense enough to remain intact. </p>



<p>Due to the sheer size of L483, the image only captures part of the lower section, with the upper regions fully visible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-fate-of-the-twin-stars">The fate of the twin stars</h2>



<p>Astronomers continue to piece together the history of these stellar ejections. By refining their models, they aim to explain the patterns of symmetry and asymmetry observed in the clouds. </p>



<p>Researchers will also determine how much material the stars have expelled, identify the molecules formed through these collisions, and measure the density of different regions.</p>



<p>In the distant future, these twin stars may each reach a mass similar to our Sun. Their powerful outflows will have dispersed the surrounding material, leaving behind a small disk of gas and dust. This remnant may eventually give rise to planets, shaping the next chapter of this celestial story.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-honoring-beverly-t-lynds">Honoring Beverly T. Lynds</h2>



<p>L483 bears the name of American astronomer <a href="https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/beverly-turner-lynds-1929-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beverly T. Lynds</a>, whose meticulous work in the early 1960s mapped dense dust clouds where stars form. </p>



<p>Her extensive catalogs of dark and bright nebulae provided essential resources for astronomers long before digital imaging and online databases became available.</p>



<p>Such contributions continue to guide modern research, enabling <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/star-formation-reignited-in-the-galaxy-leo-p-after-billions-of-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">discoveries</a> like the stunning imagery captured by the James Webb Space Telescope.</p>

<p>Scientists have been investigating how certain common medications might hold back the movement of cancer cells. Many years of observational research has hinted that daily low-dose aspirin use could curb the spread of certain cancers, including breast and prostate tumors, which caught the attention of clinicians.</p>



<p>One question lingered: how exactly does aspirin slow or stop this hidden process that sends <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cancer-cells-collaborate-to-survive-challenging-conditions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cancer</a> cells drifting around the body? Experts at the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Cambridge</a> say they have found a critical clue.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cancer-spread-and-immune-defense">Cancer spread and immune defense</h2>



<p>When a tumor stays in one spot, doctors often have a chance to remove or treat it. Trouble emerges when the cancer cells slip into the bloodstream and lodge in other areas, creating <a href="https://www.cancer.gov/types/metastatic-cancer" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metastatic growths</a> that are much harder to manage.</p>



<p>Small, lone cancer cells traveling through the body might be more open to immune system attacks than large <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/video-games-could-accelerate-discoveries-in-cancer-research/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tumors</a>. The Cambridge team tested this idea by looking for the factors that shrink or boost immune defense.</p>



<p>Their work drew attention to thromboxane A2, often called TXA2, which is produced by platelets. The team showed that TXA2 triggers a pathway in <a href="https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/t-cell" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">T cells</a> involving a protein called ARHGEF1, limiting the ability of these T cells to attack cancer.</p>



<p>Aspirin blocks the enzyme that leads to the creation of TXA2. When TXA2 levels drop, T cells seem to have more energy to find and eliminate microscopic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-lifetime-cancer-risk-may-be-established-before-we-are-born/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cancer threats</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aspirin-boosts-immunity-against-cancer">Aspirin boosts immunity against cancer</h2>



<p>“It was a Eureka moment when we found TXA2 was the molecular signal that activates this suppressive effect on T cells,” said Dr. Jie Yang, a researcher in the Department of Pathology.</p>



<p>The experts found that the protein ARHGEF1 makes T cells weaker, so they don’t fight cancer as well. When they stopped ARHGEF1 from doing this, the T cells stayed strong and attacked cancer more effectively. As a result, fewer cancer cells spread in the mice they tested.</p>



<p>In simple terms, the aspirin pathway stifles TXA2 production, which then allows T cells to keep doing their job without being put to sleep by that clotting factor. </p>



<p>The researchers suspect that, in many people, this added boost could stand between remission and a devastating cancer comeback.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-target-for-cancer-treatment">New target for cancer treatment </h2>



<p>Rahul Roychoudhuri is a professor of cancer immunology and immunotherapy at the University of Cambridge. </p>



<p>"Despite advances in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breakthrough-cancer-cells-have-a-molecular-switch-that-could-be-rewired-to-behave-normally/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cancer</a> treatment, many patients with early stage cancers receive treatments, such as surgical removal of the tumor, which have the potential to be curative," said Professor Roychoudhuri.</p>



<p>"We hope that therapies that target this window of vulnerability will have tremendous scope in preventing recurrence."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aspirin-s-potential-for-cancer-prevention">Aspirin’s potential for cancer prevention</h2>



<p>Experts warn that aspirin is not without risks. A small portion of people can experience dangerous bleeding or <a href="https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/stomach-ulcer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stomach ulcers</a>, so it is vital to speak with a doctor before making any changes to your routine.</p>



<p>On the bright side, the cost of low-dose aspirin is modest compared to many expensive antibody-based cancer drugs. Scientists believe this might mean broader global access if clinical trials confirm the results.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.addaspirintrial.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Add-Aspirin</a> clinical trial is investigating whether aspirin might keep some early tumors from returning. Scientists hope these new findings will guide them on how to personalize aspirin use and avoid giving it to people who will not benefit.</p>



<p>New <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41571-018-0134-8" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">anti-metastatic</a> treatments could also be designed to target the TXA2 and ARHGEF1 pathway with more precision. This may ultimately become a useful strategy to reduce side effects and keep T cells motivated for the long run.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-translating-findings-into-patient-care">Translating findings into patient care</h2>



<p>Researchers agree that it is still early in the process, especially for establishing the safest dose or identifying who is likely to gain the most. But the potential payoff could be significant if these steps lead to lower rates of advanced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-is-the-next-frontier-in-cancer-treatment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cancer</a> diagnoses.</p>



<p>Everything points to a greater role for the immune system in halting cancers before they get out of hand. Aspirin may enhance this defense, making it a key focus of cancer research.</p>

<p>We don't give much thought to what happens to our eyes when we sleep. Our eyelids close, and the world around us recedes into darkness. But below those closed lids, a lot more is happening than you might think.</p>



<p>Researchers have found that the size of our pupils changes constantly while we sleep - sometimes expanding, sometimes contracting, and sometimes switching back and forth in a matter of seconds.</p>



<p>Researchers at <a href="https://ethz.ch/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ETH Zurich</a> have been investigating these changes, and their research undermines a widely accepted assumption regarding sleep.</p>



<p>“These dynamics reflect the state of arousal, or the level of brain activation in regions that are responsible for sleep-wake regulation. These observations contradict the previous assumption that, essentially, the level of arousal during sleep is low," said Caroline Lustenberger, one of the researchers involved in the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-pupil-size">Significance of pupil size  </h2>



<p>Many assume that sleep is a low-energy state, but this study challenges that notion. The researchers found that even in resting states, our brains fluctuate between different levels of activation.</p>



<p>This is similar to what other studies have found in rodents, which also show slow shifts in activation levels while <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-brains-can-subconsciously-respond-to-verbal-communication-while-sleeping/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">asleep</a>.</p>



<p>To measure these changes, the scientists developed a new method for observing pupil movements in sleeping individuals. </p>



<p>Since the brain regions that regulate activation levels are deep within the brainstem, they have been difficult to measure directly. </p>



<p>Pupil size is known to reflect activation levels when we’re awake, so it serves as a useful marker for activity in these deep brain areas during different states of consciousness.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pupil-size-and-brain-activity">Pupil size and brain activity</h2>



<p>Measuring <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pupil-size-during-sleep-decides-if-new-or-old-memories-are-replayed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pupil</a> movement in sleeping people is tricky - after all, our eyes naturally close when we drift off.</p>



<p>To address this, the researchers devised an unusual approach. They used a special adhesive technique with a transparent plaster to keep the test subjects’ <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eyes-serve-as-an-early-warning-system-for-stroke-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">eyes</a> open for several hours while they slept.</p>



<p>“Our main concern was that the test subjects would be unable to sleep with their eyes open. But in a dark room, most people forget that their eyes are still open and they are able to sleep,” explained study lead author Manuel Carro Domínguez.</p>



<p>The data collected from these experiments showed a strong connection between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pupil-size-reveals-hidden-cognitive-fatigue/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pupil size</a> and different sleep stages. </p>



<p>The researchers found that changes in pupil size corresponded with specific patterns of brain activity, such as sleep spindles and deep sleep waves - both of which play key roles in memory consolidation and sleep stability.</p>



<p>Interestingly, they also discovered that the brain’s response to sounds varies in intensity depending on the level of activation reflected in the pupil.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pupil-changes-and-brain-activity">Pupil changes and brain activity</h2>



<p>One of the brain regions believed to regulate these changes is the locus coeruleus, a tiny area in the brainstem. In animals, this structure is known to help control <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-reboots-the-brain-making-room-for-new-memories/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sleep stages</a> and wakefulness.</p>



<p>While the researchers could not directly prove that the locus coeruleus is responsible for the pupil changes they observed, they suspect it plays a role.</p>



<p>“We are simply observing pupil changes that are related to the level of brain activation and heart activity,” said Lustenberger.</p>



<p>To investigate this further, the team plans to conduct follow-up studies using medication to influence the activity of the locus coeruleus. </p>



<p>This will help them determine whether it directly controls pupil dynamics during sleep and how these shifts in activation impact sleep quality and function.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pupils-and-sleep-disorders">Pupils and sleep disorders</h2>



<p>Beyond basic research, understanding how pupils change during sleep could have practical applications.</p>



<p>The researchers believe these findings could help in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders and other conditions linked to brain arousal dysfunctions.</p>



<p>The experts are particularly interested in whether pupil changes during sleep might indicate disorders such as insomnia, post-traumatic stress disorder, or even Alzheimer’s disease.</p>



<p>“These are just hypotheses that we want to investigate in the future,” said Lustenberger.</p>



<p>Another potential application is in hospital settings, where this method could be used to monitor wakefulness in coma patients or to improve the accuracy of sleep disorder diagnoses. </p>



<p>By using the pupil as a “window” into brain activity, this approach could open new doors in sleep medicine and neuroscience.</p>



<p>The study highlights an important truth: sleep is far from a passive state. Even as we rest, our brains are busy regulating activity levels - something we can now see reflected in the ever-changing size of our pupils.</p>

Pupils reveal how active the brain is - even during sleep

<p>Earth has faced many climate challenges, but none compare to the catastrophe that unfolded 250 million years ago. The End-Permian Event (EPE) stands as the most severe extinction in history, wiping out more than 80% of marine species and devastating life on land. </p>



<p>Scientists have extensively studied its effects on ocean ecosystems, but the impact of mass extinction on forests remains less clear.</p>



<p>A team of researchers from University College Cork (<a href="https://www.ucc.ie/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCC</a>), the <a href="https://uconn.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Connecticut</a>, and the <a href="https://www.nhm-wien.ac.at" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Natural History Museum</a> of Vienna has uncovered how plants responded to this crisis. </p>



<p>Their findings reveal that ecosystem recovery was slow, complex, and shaped by extreme climate swings. </p>



<p>By studying fossilized plants and rocks from the Sydney Basin in Australia, the team reconstructed a multi-million-year journey of forest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natures-climate-solutions-mixed-forests-store-more-carbon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">survival</a>, extinction, and eventual regrowth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-worst-mass-extinction-in-history">Worst mass extinction in history</h2>



<p>The End-Permian Event, which occurred around 252.3 to 251.9 million years ago, caused the collapse of gymnosperm-supported ecosystems. </p>



<p>Over 80% of ocean species vanished, making it the most severe mass extinction ever recorded. While its effects on marine life are well documented, its impact on land <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forests-play-an-overlooked-role-in-the-climate-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecosystems</a> has remained unclear.</p>



<p>Researchers examined fossilized plants and rocks from eastern Australia’s Sydney Basin, a region that was once located near the South Pole (∼70°S). </p>



<p>Using sedimentology, biostratigraphy, and stable carbon isotope analysis, they traced the timing and sequence of gymnosperm reestablishment across different latitudes. </p>



<p>The results of the analysis highlight the staggered nature of recovery, rather than a smooth, uninterrupted process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cooler-temperatures-helped-forests-recover">Cooler temperatures helped forests recover</h2>



<p>After the End-Permian Event, the first plants to return were peltasperm seed ferns. They managed to build stable ecosystems, holding on for about 200,000 years. </p>



<p>But <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forests-are-still-fighting-climate-change-against-all-odds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nature</a> didn’t stand still. Over time, voltzialean conifers took over, spreading across the land and thriving for an impressive 1.5 million years.</p>



<p>Then, disaster struck again. Around 250.3 to 249.6 million years ago, global temperatures soared during the "Late Smithian Thermal Maximum."</p>



<p>The heat was too much for the conifer forests, and they collapsed. Their disappearance left space for a new kind of survivor - pleuromeian lycophytes. These plants were tough. They didn’t need much to grow, making them perfect for harsh conditions.</p>



<p>For 800,000 years, these small, shrubby plants dominated the land. But nothing lasts forever. </p>



<p>As temperatures finally began to drop during the "Smithian-Spathian Event" around 249.6 to 249.2 million years ago, the environment shifted once again, opening the door for a new wave of plant life to reshape the world.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forests-recover-but-extinction-is-forever">Forests recover, but extinction is forever</h2>



<p>The SSE brought much-needed relief to struggling <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forests-rich-tree-diversity-adapt-better-changing-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecosystems</a>. </p>



<p>As the climate cooled, a new kind of plant took over - umkomasialean seed ferns. These plants thrived and spread across the high-latitude forests of Gondwana, shaping the landscapes of the Middle and Late Triassic. They helped stabilize ecosystems that had been in chaos for millions of years.</p>



<p>But recovery didn’t happen the same way everywhere. In many parts of the world, pleuromeian lycophytes - a type of tough, shrubby plant - quickly spread after the End-Permian Event. However, in the polar south, this process was much slower.</p>



<p>It took around 1.7 million years for these plants to finally establish themselves. This delay reveals that recovery from mass extinction wasn’t simple or predictable. Some places rebounded faster than others, while some struggled for much longer.</p>



<p>Even though forests eventually grew dense again, they were not the same. The plants that filled these new <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trees-are-relocating-in-a-race-against-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecosystems</a> were completely different from those that had dominated before the extinction. Nature rebuilt itself, but in a way no one could have expected.</p>



<p>“The term ‘recovery’ can be misleading. Forests recover eventually, but extinction is forever," said Dr. Chris Mays, leader of the Mass Extinction Group at University College Cork.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-from-ancient-forest-extinction">Lessons from ancient forest extinction</h2>



<p>Studying how ancient ecosystems recovered from extreme climate shifts gives us clues about what might happen to plants today. The way they adapted back then can help scientists predict how modern plant life will respond to environmental changes.</p>



<p>Plants do much more than just grow. They form the foundation of nature’s balance, providing food for animals and humans alike. </p>



<p>They also help regulate the Earth's climate by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. When plants thrive, ecosystems stay stable. When they struggle, the entire planet feels the impact.</p>



<p>“This research highlights how crucial plants are, not just as the base of land food chains, but also as natural carbon sinks that stabilize Earth’s climate,” explained UCC researcher Marcos Amores, the study’s lead author.</p>



<p>“The disruption of these systems can have impacts lasting hundreds of thousands of years, so protecting today’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forests-face-rising-damage-risks-as-their-diversity-dwindles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecosystems</a> is more important than ever.”</p>



<p>Earth’s past reveals a clear lesson: nature can recover, but it takes time. The resilience of plant life has shaped the world we know today, making conservation efforts essential for the future of our ecosystems.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>

<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>

<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
