<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>

<p>A quarter-century-old question about the universe’s largest magnetic fields is gaining new attention. These puzzling fields develop around magnetars in a way that was only theorized, until now.</p>



<p>According to Dr. Andrey Igoshev, lead researcher from the University of Leeds, the team's simulations have settled debates that have lingered for 25 years. </p>



<p>The study was focused on the birth and growth of a <a href="https://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/science/objects/neutron_stars1.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">neutron star</a>, which is a compact stellar core that remains after a massive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unusual-activity-detected-from-earths-closest-magnetar/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">star</a> collapses.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-magnetars-so-powerful">What makes magnetars so powerful</h2>



<p>A magnetar is a neutron <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strange-object-discovered-in-space-should-never-have-been-there/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">star</a> with a magnetic field that can reach billions of times the strength of what we experience on Earth. </p>



<p>Such wild conditions are known to cause bursts of X-ray radiation that defy simple explanations, leading astronomers to look for clues to explain how these bizarre objects stay so active.</p>



<p>"Magnetars play a special role in modern high-energy astrophysics. They have been suggested as central engines for superluminous supernovae and ultralong γ-ray bursts. They produce at least a fraction of the mysterious fast radio bursts," noted the researchers.</p>



<p>Some magnetars display <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.1196088" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dipole fields</a> in a lower range, yet they still show the same dramatic flares. This led experts to question why low-intensity magnetars share striking similarities with those having stronger dipole fields.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-supernova-fallout-speeds-up-the-star">Supernova fallout speeds up the star</h2>



<p>When a massive star runs out of fuel, it collapses and ejects material outward, leaving behind a tiny, rotating core. A fraction of that matter returns in a process called fallback, and this incoming mass spins the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fastest-spinning-magnetar-reveals-secrets-of-neutron-stars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">star</a> faster than researchers once expected.</p>



<p>The study revealed that this faster spin plays a serious role in ramping up hidden magnetic structures. This finding links a supernova’s aftermath with a star’s subsequent behavior.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-generation-of-big-magnetic-fields">Generation of big magnetic fields</h2>



<p>A mechanism called the Tayler-Spruit dynamo involves differential rotation that triggers magnetic instabilities inside the hot, dense interior. </p>



<p>This mechanism was originally proposed years ago, but it had never been fully confirmed as the driver behind certain field configurations.</p>



<p>“Low-intensity magnetars can be produced as a result of a Tayler-Spruit dynamo inside a neutron protostar,” noted Dr. Igoshev. This points to a distinct route for generating big magnetic fields in stars that do not exhibit the classic ultra-strong external dipole signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-weak-magnetars-with-powerful-bursts">Weak magnetars with powerful bursts</h2>



<p>“X-ray observations show that in two cases, low-intensity magnetars have small-scale <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fast-radio-burst-frb-20240209a-detected-from-dead-galaxy-should-not-be-possible/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">magnetic fields</a> 10-100 times stronger than their dipole fields,” said Dr. Igoshev.</p>



<p>Observations reveal that certain neutron stars still release bursts just like their mightier relatives.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Objects such as SGR 0418+5729 and Swift J1882.3-1606 confirm that an external reading of the star’s field doesn’t always match its internal reality. The high-energy flashes seen from these objects demonstrate how less obvious fields can still unleash surprising events.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quiet-stars-with-huge-outbursts">Quiet stars with huge outbursts</h2>



<p>According to the researchers, these findings add context to models of supernova remnants and the huge outbursts that neutron stars sometimes display.</p>



<p>The role of <a href="https://www.aanda.org/articles/aa/abs/2005/19/aa2062-04/aa2062-04.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">proto-neutron-star dynamos</a> goes beyond standard theories, linking fallback conditions to later phenomena that defy easy explanations.</p>



<p>This approach might also clarify the huge release of energy in certain gamma-ray bursts. Each step forward reveals ways in which intense fields appear or linger, even after a star has seemingly settled down.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gazing-into-the-future">Gazing into the future</h2>



<p>Upcoming space observatories will provide new data that may help scientists understand how complex magnetic fields form inside magnetars. </p>



<p>These deep magnetic networks play a crucial role in influencing the energy output of these stars, potentially explaining why some magnetars release powerful bursts while others remain quiet.</p>



<p>By improving our ability to map a star’s internal structure, scientists can better predict which magnetars are at risk of producing sudden and intense flares. This could lead to better forecasting of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-magnetic-field-has-a-dent-and-nasa-is-watching-closely/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmic events</a> that affect space environments.</p>



<p>The research highlights how the conditions immediately following a supernova explosion shape what happens later. The remnants left behind can determine how a star evolves and whether it will exhibit extreme behavior.</p>



<p>Hidden processes within a star’s core might be far more complex than previously thought, pushing scientists to rethink what they know about extreme cosmic events.</p>

Huge outbursts from quiet magnetars have a surprising source

<p>When you think of the species that call Antarctica home, you probably picture penguins waddling on the ice or seals lounging by the shore. Yet, amid this icy expanse, there's a lesser-known creature that is the only insect native to this region: the Antarctic midge.</p>



<p>Unlike larger Antarctic inhabitants, this tiny wingless fly doesn’t rely on fur, feathers, or blubber to survive. Instead, the midge has evolved a suite of biological mechanisms to withstand the extreme conditions of Antarctica.</p>



<p>In fact, understanding its survival strategy could provide valuable insights for human applications, such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biobanking-historic-initiative-aims-to-genetically-rescue-endangered-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cryopreservation</a>.</p>



<p>For years, many aspects of the Antarctic midge's life remained a mystery. But now, thanks to meticulous research, scientists have unveiled the secrets of its unique two-year life cycle. The findings shed light on how this tiny insect thrives in one of Earth’s harshest environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mysterious-life-cycle-of-antarctica-s-insect">Mysterious life cycle of Antarctica's insect</h2>



<p>The study, led by Professor Satoshi Goto from <a href="https://www.omu.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Osaka Metropolitan University</a>, provides the first comprehensive look at the Antarctic midge’s two-year life cycle. It is shaped by two distinct dormancy phases: quiescence and obligate diapause.</p>



<p>Through observations over six years of rearing midge larvae, the researchers have revealed how this insect times its development to maximize survival in the unforgiving <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/record-low-antarctic-sea-ice-and-rapid-melting-pace-stuns-climate-scientists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Antarctic climate</a>.</p>



<p>To understand how the midge endures frigid winters in Antarctica, the experts examined its two critical dormancy strategies: quiescence and obligate diapause.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-two-states-of-dormancy">Two states of dormancy </h2>



<p>Quiescence is a temporary state of dormancy triggered by unfavorable conditions. When faced with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctica-shattered-extreme-cold-records-during-global-heat-wave/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme cold</a>, the midge larvae pause their development but resume growth as soon as the environment becomes more hospitable.</p>



<p>In contrast, obligate diapause is a more complex, pre-programmed dormancy that occurs at a fixed point in the insect’s life cycle, regardless of the immediate environmental conditions.</p>



<p>This strategy, which is relatively rare, is typically observed in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-insect-is-transforming-antarctic-soils-paving-the-way-for-new-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">insects</a> from temperate climates and allows the midge to precisely time its development.</p>



<p>The researchers found that by the first winter, the larvae mature to their second instar stage and enter quiescence, waiting for warmer conditions before resuming development.</p>



<p>By the second winter, however, the insects reach their final larval stage but do not pupate. Instead, they enter obligate diapause, delaying their transition to adulthood until the following summer.</p>



<p>This built-in delay ensures that when summer finally arrives, all individuals emerge as adults simultaneously, optimizing their chances of finding mates during their short-lived adult phase.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-race-against-time">Race against time</h2>



<p>As the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-summer-thaw-lasts-longer-than-previously-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Antarctic summer</a> approaches, the long-awaited transformation begins. With rising temperatures, obligate diapause ends, allowing the larvae to synchronize their pupation and emerge as adults.</p>



<p>But adulthood for the Antarctic midge is fleeting - these insects live for just a few days, during which they must quickly find a mate and reproduce before the harsh environment takes its toll. This perfectly timed reproductive strategy is crucial for the species’ survival in such an extreme habitat.</p>

<p>“We determined that for the Antarctic midge obligate diapause ends with the onset of low temperatures in winter so that the larvae all pupate at the same time and emerge as adults at the same time," said Professor Goto.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Although seasonal adaptation strategies involving overwintering multiple times using both quiescence and obligate diapause have not been reported in other organisms, we believe that insects inhabiting harsh environments such as the Arctic and high altitudes might be employing similar strategies.”</p>

<p>Interestingly, the researchers speculate that similar survival strategies may exist in insects from other extreme environments, such as the Arctic or high-altitude regions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-life-in-extreme-conditions">Life in extreme conditions</h2>



<p>The Antarctic midge’s extraordinary ability to survive multiple winters through both quiescence and obligate diapause is a testament to nature’s ingenuity.  </p>



<p>"This adaptability is a testament to the resilience of this species in the face of extreme challenges," wrote the study authors.</p>



<p>"Although its stress tolerance has been extensively studied, the physiological mechanisms by which this species enters winter dormancy and synchronizes its life cycle with Antarctic seasons have received less attention."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-from-antarctica-s-insects">Lessons from Antarctica’s insects</h2>



<p>The research exceeds just a simple understanding of Antarctica's ecosystem. The midge's resilience can teach scientists in the fields of cryopreservation, climate adaptation or even space exploration.</p>



<p>If nature has already found a solution to endure the unrelenting cycles of thawing and freezing, it could be possible for similar biological mechanisms to be applied to humans. </p>



<p>These findings may inspire future advancements in fields like biological preservation and climate adaptation research. </p>



<p>While penguins may steal the spotlight, the humble Antarctic midge proves that even the smallest creatures can have remarkable survival stories worth telling.</p>

<p>The universe is a constant source of wonder, revealing breathtaking sights that highlight its immense beauty and scale. Among these cosmic marvels, star clusters hold a special place as the cradles of newborn stars, planets, and other celestial phenomena.</p>



<p>Recently, the European Southern Observatory (<a href="https://www.eso.org/public/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESO</a>) released a remarkable 80-million-pixel image of the stellar nursery RCW 38.</p>



<p>Captured by the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (<a href="https://www.eso.org/public/teles-instr/paranal-observatory/surveytelescopes/vista/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">VISTA</a>) in Chile’s Atacama Desert, this image provides a rare glimpse into a world where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stunning-star-clusters-captured-in-the-extreme-outskirts-of-the-milky-way/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">young stars</a> ignite and illuminate the cosmos.</p>

<p>RCW 38 lies approximately 5,500 light-years away in the constellation Vela. Unlike many star clusters that appear as simple dots in the night sky, RCW 38 is a stunning, colorful display of swirling gases and young stars. </p>



<p>The VISTA image reveals a dynamic, ever-changing landscape where cosmic forces shape the early lives of new <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dazzling-star-cluster-creates-a-cosmic-holiday-wreath/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stars</a>.</p>



<p>With its radiant streaks and swirling patterns, this stellar nursery bursts with color. The pink hues in the image come from energized gas clouds surrounding the stars, while the multi-colored specks represent young stars in various stages of formation. </p>



<p>This vibrant scene is not just for aesthetic appreciation - it is an active region of star birth, where new celestial bodies emerge from dense clouds of dust and gas.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-young-cluster-full-of-energy">A young cluster full of energy</h2>



<p>Compared to our Sun, which at about 4.6 billion years old is in a stable phase of its life, the stars in RCW 38 are still very young. </p>



<p>At less than a million years old, RCW 38 contains some 2,000 stars, creating this psychedelic landscape. This young star <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secret-origins-of-young-star-clusters-traced-to-three-families/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cluster</a> is bustling with activity, which makes it an interesting target for astronomers to observe.</p>



<p>Its youthfulness means that RCW 38 is a turbulent place. Intense radiation from newly formed stars shapes the surrounding environment, heating the gas clouds and triggering the birth of even more stars.</p>



<p>Some of these new stars will grow into massive, luminous objects, while others will remain faint and cool, unable to sustain nuclear fusion for long.</p>



<p>The interactions between these young stars and their surroundings create a chaotic but fascinating environment. Understanding these processes helps astronomers gain insights into how stars, including our Sun, were once formed in similar stellar nurseries billions of years ago.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-stars-are-born">How stars are born</h2>



<p>Star clusters are like giant pressure cookers, containing all the ingredients for star formation: dense gas clouds and opaque clumps of cosmic dust. When this mixture of gas and dust collapses under its own gravity, a star is born.</p>



<p>The early stages of star formation are hidden from view because thick dust clouds obscure visible light. As gravity pulls gas and dust together, the core of the forming star becomes hotter and denser. Eventually, nuclear fusion ignites, marking the birth of a new star. </p>



<p>This process happens on different scales. It forms both large, luminous stars and smaller, dim objects known as brown dwarfs.</p>



<p>In RCW 38, these young stars are packed closely together, creating an energetic environment where stellar winds and radiation continuously reshape the region. As these newborn stars emit intense ultraviolet radiation, they heat the surrounding gas, making it glow in vibrant shades of pink and red.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-infrared-observations-of-a-star-cluster">Infrared observations of a star cluster </h2>



<p>The strong radiation coming from these newborn stars makes the gas that encompasses the star cluster glow brightly, creating the pink hues that are visible in RCW 38.</p>



<p>In visible light, many stars in the RCW 38 cluster remain hidden from us, because dust blocks our view of them.</p>



<p>That is where the VISTA telescope, at ESO’s <a href="https://www.eso.org/public/teles-instr/paranal-observatory/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Paranal Observatory</a>, comes in. Its camera captures infrared light, which, unlike visible light, can pass through dust with minimal obstruction. </p>



<p>Infrared technology is crucial in modern astronomy. While visible light telescopes capture stunning images, they cannot penetrate thick dust clouds. Infrared cameras like VISTA’s VIRCAM provide a clearer view, allowing astronomers to study hidden objects that would otherwise remain unseen.</p>



<p>By observing in infrared, astronomers gain a more complete understanding of stellar nurseries. They can detect young stars still embedded in their birth cocoons, observe the movement of gas and dust, and even identify objects like brown dwarfs - cool, faint <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mysterious-star-movement-in-omega-centauri-may-finally-be-explained/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">celestial bodies</a> that failed to sustain nuclear fusion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-legacy-of-discovery">A legacy of discovery</h2>



<p>This infrared image was taken during the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (<a href="https://www.eso.org/sci/activities/thesis-topics/abstrValenti_VVV_1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">VVV</a>) survey, which has produced the most detailed infrared map of our home galaxy ever made. Surveys like this reveal as yet unknown astronomical objects, or give us a new view of known ones.</p>



<p>Since this image was taken, VISTA’s faithful <a href="https://www.eso.org/sci/facilities/paranal/decommissioned/vircam.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">VIRCAM</a> camera, which has conducted numerous imaging surveys since 2008, has retired after an impressive run. </p>



<p>Later this year, the telescope will receive a brand new instrument called <a href="https://www.4most.eu/cms/home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">4MOST</a>, which will gather the spectra of 2,400 objects at once over a large area of the sky. </p>



<p>VISTA has played an essential role in expanding our knowledge of the universe. Over the years, it has mapped vast regions of the Milky Way, uncovering countless hidden <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/uma3-u1-faintest-star-system-found-orbiting-milky-way-galaxy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stars</a>, nebulae, and other celestial objects. Its contributions have allowed astronomers to piece together a more detailed picture of our galaxy’s structure and evolution.</p>



<p>With the arrival of 4MOST, VISTA’s capabilities will take another leap forward. This advanced instrument will enable astronomers to study thousands of objects at once, gathering valuable spectral data that can reveal details about the composition, motion, and origins of celestial bodies.</p>



<p>As one chapter closes, another begins. The retirement of VIRCAM marks the end of an era, but the introduction of 4MOST signals the beginning of a new phase in astronomical exploration. </p>

<p>Artists have explored tree-like images in art for centuries. Many people see these scenes and instantly recognize them as trees, even when the art is strangely stylized or lacks detail.</p>



<p>A new study suggests that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-time-and-space-interact-in-the-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ability</a> to spot trees in art may hinge on a simple quantity related to how branch thickness scales across different sizes.</p>



<p>The research was conducted by Jingyi Gao, currently at the University of Wisconsin, and Mitchell Newberry, an assistant professor at the University of New Mexico.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-tree-proportions-trick-your-brain">How tree proportions trick your brain</h2>



<p>Trees appear in many cultural depictions, yet the features that trigger our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-the-human-brain-processes-visual-information/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brains</a> to recognize them are not always obvious. Some artwork has curvy shapes, while others show bold, blocky forms that look nothing like leaves or bark.</p>



<p>The new <a href="https://academic.oup.com/pnasnexus/article/4/2/pgaf003/7996468?login=false" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">research</a> shows that one hidden pattern stands out. When smaller branches maintain a certain relationship to their parent branches, viewers see a tree right away.</p>



<p>By keeping the ratio between small and large branch diameters consistent, artists preserve an essential quality that suggests tree-like growth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recognizable-trees-in-art">Recognizable trees in art</h2>



<p>A fractal is a shape that repeats itself on different scales. These patterns appear in snowflakes, clouds, and real tree branches. They can also show up in hand-carved shapes or painted lines, as long as the size pattern remains similar across large and small areas.</p>



<p>In this study, the researchers explored whether fractals could explain why certain artworks display recognizable trees. They focused on a "branch diameter scaling exponent," which acts like the fractal dimension for tree branches.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“There are some characteristics of the art that feel like they’re aesthetic or subjective, but we can use math to describe it,” said Gao, the lead author of the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-math-behind-tree-like-shapes">Math behind tree-like shapes </h2>



<p>Branch diameter scaling resembles the standard Pythagorean theorem, which often shows up in middle school geometry.</p>



<p>By squaring the diameters of child branches and relating them to the parent branch, the researchers identified a numerical factor that separates a tree-like feel from other forms.</p>



<p>This number can vary from about 1.5 to 3 for real trees in nature. Artists, whether knowingly or not, often work near that range. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-art-from-different-eras">Art from different eras</h2>



<p>The team analyzed carvings from the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque in India, a Japanese painting from the 1700s, and early 1900s Dutch abstract art. Each of these cultural pieces showed a similar balancing act in how thick the branches were compared to their bigger trunks.</p>



<p>Even when lines were curved like snakes or reduced to bold strokes on a gray background, observers still saw a tree if the diameter scaling stayed in that “sweet spot.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It’s at the core of a lot of different depictions of trees, even if they’re in different styles and different <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-brains-bend-time-to-adapt-to-lifes-rhythm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cultures</a> or centuries,” said Newberry, senior author of the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-discoveries">Unexpected discoveries</h2>



<p>In some surprising cases, an art piece that looked more realistic had a slightly off scaling exponent, while a more stylized carving had a value closer to real-life trees. This hints that realism is not the only requirement for a convincing tree image.</p>



<p>A highly abstract example from Piet Mondrian’s series offers a glimpse at this idea. Even with just a few black lines and no obvious leaves, one painting has a scaling exponent that lands in the natural range.</p>



<p>When Mondrian removed that scaling in a later piece, people began interpreting the lines in all sorts of other ways.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-math-and-art-connect-in-tree-images">Math and art connect in tree images</h2>



<p>The study stems from a background of interdisciplinary thinking. Mathematics can unite seemingly separate fields, especially when it comes to repeated patterns found in biology and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secrets-of-learning-how-our-brains-neurons-make-and-retrieve-memories/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">art</a>.</p>



<p>This project also highlights how looking at a painting can reveal deeper truths about nature. The researchers combined artistic analysis with core geometry to capture a consistent formula.</p>



<p>By tapping into fractals, the experts unlocked a new way of explaining how we recognize tree shapes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-blending-science-and-creativity">Blending science and creativity</h2>



<p>The research might also spark fresh discussions about the blending of science and creativity. The study focuses on the idea that something as subjective as art appreciation might have a quantitative backbone. </p>



<p>Scientists continue to investigate whether our brains latch onto these branching proportions from an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-pathway-discovered-that-suppresses-fear/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolutionary standpoint</a>, given our familiarity with natural trees that grew around us for thousands of years.</p>



<p>The visual pull of art might be less mysterious than previously believed. It could boil down to numbers that we subconsciously pick up whenever we spot repeating forms. The same principle might extend to different styles of illustration or design, from digital graphics to architecture.</p>

<p>The human brain is a marvel of evolution, enabling language, reasoning, and imagination. To uncover the roots of this complexity, scientists have studied brain structures across different species.</p>



<p>The pallium, a brain region forming the neocortex in mammals, has been central to this type of research. It plays a crucial role in sensory processing and higher cognition, making it a defining feature of mammalian intelligence.</p>



<p>Traditionally, experts believed the pallium was a shared structure among mammals, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-brain-study-will-shed-new-light-on-avian-intelligence/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birds</a>, and reptiles, varying only in complexity.</p>



<p>They assumed that this brain region contained similar neuronal types with equivalent circuits for sensory and cognitive processing. Previous studies supported this view, identifying shared excitatory and inhibitory neurons and general connectivity patterns across these vertebrate groups.</p>



<p>However, recent findings have upended this long-standing idea, revealing that while the pallium serves similar functions across species, its development follows different genetic blueprints.</p>



<p>The evolution of the brain has followed multiple paths, revealing surprising differences in how birds and mammals developed their neural circuits.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-distinct-developmental-processes">Distinct developmental processes</h2>



<p>The pallium has long been considered the seat of higher <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-birds-brains-evolved-to-enable-them-to-fly/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cognition</a> in vertebrates. In mammals, it forms the neocortex, the part of the brain responsible for abstract thought and decision-making. </p>



<p>In birds, the pallium plays a comparable role in complex behaviors such as tool use, problem-solving, and vocal learning. Despite these similarities, scientists have discovered that the developmental origins of the pallium differ significantly across species.</p>



<p>New research suggests that while birds and mammals have evolved functionally similar brain circuits, these circuits arise through distinct developmental processes. </p>



<p>The neurons that perform cognitive tasks in birds and mammals originate in different locations and at different times during embryonic development. This indicates that they are not directly inherited from a common ancestor but have instead evolved independently.</p>



<p>Dr. Fernando García-Moreno and Eneritz Rueda-Alaña of the <a href="https://www.achucarro.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience</a>, in collaboration with multiple research centers, set out to investigate the developmental differences in bird and mammal brains.</p>



<p>"Our studies show that evolution has found multiple solutions for building complex brains," noted Dr. García-Moreno. </p>



<p>"Birds have developed sophisticated neural circuits through their own mechanisms, without following the same path as mammals. This changes how we understand brain evolution."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-perspective-on-evolutionary-paths">New perspective on evolutionary paths</h2>



<p>Using spatial transcriptomics and mathematical modeling, the researchers found that neurons responsible for sensory processing in birds and mammals are formed using different genetic tools.</p>



<p>"Their neurons are born in different locations and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/subtle-dna-changes-shaped-human-brain-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">developmental times</a> in each species," said Dr. García-Moreno. "This indicates that they are not comparable neurons derived from a common ancestor."</p>



<p>Instead, each species has developed new and unique cell types using distinct genetic programs. This finding suggests that the neural structures supporting cognitive functions in birds and mammals are not homologous but are instead the product of convergent evolution.</p>



<p>Convergent evolution occurs when different species independently develop similar biological traits due to comparable environmental pressures. In this case, both birds and mammals evolved sophisticated neural circuits but through entirely separate genetic pathways. </p>



<p>This discovery challenges the assumption that complex cognition in vertebrates emerged from a single evolutionary trajectory.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mapping-the-neurons-of-the-avian-brain">Mapping the neurons of the avian brain</h2>



<p>A second study, conducted at Heidelberg University, was co-directed by&nbsp;Bastienne Zaremba, Henrik Kaessmann, and Dr. García-Moreno. </p>



<p>The researchers created a detailed cell-type atlas of the avian brain and compared it with mammalian and reptilian brains. Their findings further revealed the fundamental divergence in brain evolution among these groups.</p>



<p>"We were able to describe the hundreds of genes that each type of neuron uses in these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/from-genes-to-genius-what-makes-the-human-brain-unique/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brains</a>, cell by cell, and compare them with bioinformatics tools," said Dr. García-Moreno.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-neurons-shared-across-species">Neurons shared across species</h2>



<p>The analysis showed that birds have retained most inhibitory neurons present in vertebrates for hundreds of millions of years. However, their excitatory neurons, which transmit information and drive higher cognitive functions, have evolved uniquely.</p>



<p>Interestingly, only a few types of excitatory neurons in birds shared genetic similarities with those in mammals. These included neurons linked to the claustrum and the hippocampus, suggesting that some neuronal types are ancient and widely shared across species. </p>



<p>"However, most excitatory neurons have evolved in new and different ways in each species," said Dr. García-Moreno.</p>



<p>This study illustrates how evolution can shape the brain in different ways, even when species face similar cognitive challenges. Birds and mammals both require advanced neural circuits to interact with their environments, yet they have taken distinct genetic routes to build these capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-circuits-and-evolution-s-flexibility">Brain circuits and evolution’s flexibility</h2>



<p>Both studies used cutting-edge techniques to trace the evolution of brain circuits in vertebrates. The researchers combined spatial transcriptomics, developmental neurobiology, single-cell analysis, and mathematical modeling to compare how neurons develop and function across species.</p>



<p>The results provide strong evidence that advanced cognitive functions do not require a single evolutionary blueprint. Instead, evolution has repeatedly found different ways to construct complex brains.</p>



<p>These findings demonstrate that the brain is remarkably flexible in its development. Birds and mammals have independently acquired the ability to process information, solve problems, and engage in social behaviors. </p>



<p>The diversity of their neural pathways challenges traditional views of brain evolution, showing that intelligence can emerge from a wide range of genetic and cellular processes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-studying-brain-evolution">Significance of studying brain evolution</h2>



<p>"Our brain makes us human, but it also binds us to other animal species through a shared evolutionary history," said Dr. García-Moreno.</p>



<p>This shared history means that studying the brains of other animals can provide crucial insights into human cognition. Understanding the genetic programs that shape different neuronal types could open new research directions in neurodevelopment and brain disorders.</p>



<p>"Only by understanding how the brain forms, both in its embryonic development and in its evolutionary history, can we truly grasp how it <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-brain-literally-changes-based-on-daily-activities-and-lifestyle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">functions</a>," said Dr. García-Moreno.</p>



<p>These discoveries pave the way for future investigations into how the brain evolves and adapts, shedding light on the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying intelligence.</p>



<p>As scientists continue to explore brain evolution, they may uncover even more unexpected pathways leading to cognitive complexity. The story of the brain is far from complete, and each new discovery adds another layer to our understanding of how intelligence has emerged in the natural world.</p>

<p>The deep sea is one of the most mysterious places on Earth. It is a world of extreme pressure, freezing temperatures, and near-total darkness. Yet, life thrives in this environment, adapting in ways that push the boundaries of scientific understanding. </p>



<p>Among the most fascinating creatures in these depths are shrimp from the Oplophoroidea family.</p>



<p>These shrimp have developed remarkable visual systems that allow them to survive in a world where the only light comes from bioluminescence or faint traces from the surface.</p>



<p>A new study from Florida International University (<a href="https://www.fiu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FIU</a>) has uncovered how light has influenced the evolution of these shrimp. </p>



<p>Led by biologist Danielle DeLeo, the research reveals that these deep-sea shrimp rely on specialized proteins to detect and interpret light energy.</p>



<p>Their ability to see in such an extreme <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-marine-protected-areas-boost-human-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environment</a> may be crucial for movement, survival, and possibly even communication.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-world-of-darkness-and-bioluminescence">A world of darkness and bioluminescence</h2>



<p>The deep ocean is unlike any other habitat on Earth. Sunlight barely reaches beyond a few hundred meters, leaving the vast majority of the deep sea in total darkness. </p>



<p>However, this does not mean the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alien-like-marine-life-found-on-underwater-mountains-includes-100-new-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean</a> is completely devoid of light. Many deep-sea creatures produce their own light through bioluminescence, which they use for hunting, camouflage, and attracting mates.</p>



<p>Shrimp from the Oplophoroidea family have adapted to this light-limited world. Some species in this group can migrate vertically, traveling large distances up and down the water column in a daily rhythm.</p>



<p>Scientists believe they rely on bioluminescent signals to navigate and possibly even differentiate between various sources of light. This ability is critical for their survival in an ecosystem where light is both a rare and valuable resource.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-light-and-deep-sea-shrimp-evolution">Light and deep-sea shrimp evolution</h2>



<p>Light has played a major role in shaping the evolution of vision in marine species. </p>



<p>The study found that some shrimp possess special glowing organs, which they use for different purposes, including camouflage and self-defense. </p>



<p>These shrimp have also developed a diverse range of light-detecting proteins that help them make sense of their bioluminescent <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heavy-metal-pollution-threatens-marine-life-and-human-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">surroundings</a>.</p>



<p>"As primitive eyes evolved in the oceans during the Cambrian explosion, some 540 million years ago - a time when we now know bioluminescence already existed - understanding how different light sources impact vision in present-day species can illuminate their past influence on early animals," said DeLeo.</p>



<p>She conducted this research while at FIU and is now a postdoctoral fellow at the <a href="https://naturalhistory.si.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History</a>.</p>



<p>By studying these shrimp, scientists can gain new insights into how early marine life may have interacted with light and how vision first evolved in the ocean.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-opsins-key-to-seeing-in-the-dark">Opsins: Key to seeing in the dark</h2>



<p>One of the most important findings of the study was the discovery of a variety of opsins in deep-sea shrimp. </p>



<p>Opsins are proteins found in the eyes of many animals, including humans. They help detect light and play a crucial role in how organisms perceive their environment.</p>



<p>In deep-sea shrimp, these proteins allow them to detect a range of colors, particularly blue light, which dominates the deep-sea environment. </p>



<p>Some shrimp might even be able to differentiate between their own bioluminescent glow and the light produced by other organisms. </p>

<p>The study also found that shrimp that migrate into shallower waters have a greater variety of these light-detecting proteins. This suggests that their vision has evolved to accommodate a more complex lighting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-oceans-are-rapidly-changing-colors-matching-climate-predictions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environment</a>. </p>



<p>In shallower depths, they may need to distinguish between natural sunlight, scattered surface light, and bioluminescent signals from other deep-sea creatures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-complexity-of-deep-sea-shrimp-vision">Complexity of deep-sea shrimp vision</h2>



<p>The discovery of these unique visual adaptations raises new questions about how deep-sea creatures communicate and interact with their environment. </p>



<p>Heather Bracken-Grissom, FIU biologist and assistant director of the <a href="https://calendar.fiu.edu/department/coastlines_and_oceans_division" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Coastlines and Oceans Division</a> in the Institute of Environment, believes this research is just the beginning of understanding deep-sea vision.</p>



<p>"We are just beginning to understand how visual systems have evolved in light-limited environments and how animals may be using bioluminescent signals to communicate with one another," Bracken-Grissom said. </p>



<p>"There is still a lot to learn, but this study can pave the way for future research in other deep-sea groups."</p>



<p>This research opens doors to further exploration of how vision has evolved in creatures that live in extreme environments. </p>



<p>Understanding how shrimp and other deep-sea organisms use light may provide clues about the broader evolutionary history of vision across different species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-survival-in-the-deep">Survival in the deep</h2>



<p>The ability to see in near-total darkness is an extraordinary adaptation that has allowed deep-sea shrimp to thrive. </p>



<p>Opsins and other visual proteins may not only help them navigate but also determine which animals are potential threats and which are allies. </p>



<p>In a world where survival depends on split-second decisions, these adaptations could be the difference between life and death.</p>



<p>This research also highlights the importance of studying <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mapping-marine-heatwaves-to-understand-their-impacts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deep-sea environments</a>. <p>A recent study by Princeton neuroscientists introduces a novel mathematical model that sheds light on how the brain integrates sensory cues - such as sights and sounds - when making decisions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings, published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41593-025-01869-7" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Nature Neuroscience</em></a>, could deepen our understanding of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and may also help improve artificial intelligence systems, such as digital assistants and self-driving cars.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conflicting-sensory-information">Conflicting sensory information</h2>



<p>Everyday decisions require the brain to juggle multiple sensory inputs. A commuter walking to work, for instance, might see a glowing crosswalk signal indicating it is safe to cross.&nbsp;</p>



<p>At the same time, they may hear the blaring siren of an ambulance approaching the intersection, forcing them to reassess their decision.</p>



<p>While scientists have long studied how the brain processes such competing signals, the precise mechanisms remain unclear.</p>



<p>One crucial region for decision-making is the prefrontal cortex, located just behind the eyes. This area is often regarded as the center of higher cognition. Previous studies have shown that neurons in the prefrontal cortex respond in complex ways during decision-making. </p>



<p>For example, some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-cells-communicate-to-support-decision-making/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">neurons</a> may fire only when a green traffic light appears and a car is blocking the crosswalk. However, a comprehensive model explaining how these neurons collectively process sensory information to generate behavioral decisions has remained elusive.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-new-model-to-explain-brain-circuitry">A new model to explain brain circuitry</h2>



<p>Various mathematical models have been developed to explain how neural circuits link <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/emotions-sensory-perception-brain-fascinating-interplay/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sensory information</a> to behavior, each with its limitations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>One commonly used approach involves recurrent neural networks - models with interconnected units designed to simulate decision-making. However, these models are often difficult to interpret due to the complexity of their connections.</p>



<p>In their latest study, postdoctoral researcher Christopher Langdon and assistant professor of neuroscience Tatiana Engel - both from <a href="https://www.princeton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Princeton University</a> - propose a new framework called the latent circuit model.</p>



<p>Instead of analyzing the entire brain network in overwhelming detail, Langdon and Engel suggest focusing on a few key neurons that act as “ringleaders” in decision-making, influencing the behavior of the entire network.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This approach, known as a low-dimensional mechanism, seeks to identify a small number of core processes that drive neural decision-making.</p>



<p>“The goal of the research was to understand if low-dimensional mechanisms were operating inside large recurrent neural networks,” Langdon said.</p>



<p>To test their hypothesis, the researchers applied the latent circuit model to a context-dependent decision-making task performed by humans, monkeys, and computer models.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testing-the-decision-making-model-nbsp">Testing the decision-making model&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In the experiment, participants were first shown a context cue - either a square or a triangle. Next, they saw a moving grid, which acted as the sensory cue.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Depending on the shape they were initially shown, participants had to focus on either the color (red vs. green) or the motion (left vs. right) of the grid to make their decision.</p>



<p>Using the latent circuit model, Langdon and Engel found that when motion was the relevant cue, neurons processing shape information suppressed those that processed color. The opposite occurred when color was the critical cue.</p>



<p>“It was very exciting to find an interpretable, concrete mechanism hiding inside a big network,” Langdon said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mapping-decision-making-in-the-brain">Mapping decision-making in the brain</h2>



<p>The latent circuit model allows researchers to predict how decision-making changes when specific neural connections are strengthened or removed. By testing these predictions, scientists can verify whether the underlying connectivity is truly necessary for the task.</p>



<p>Indeed, the study confirmed that task performance deteriorated in predictable ways when certain neural connections were disrupted.</p>



<p>“The cool thing about our new work is that we showed how you can translate all those things that you can do with a circuit onto a big network,” Langdon said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“When you build a small neural circuit by hand, there’s lots of things you can do to convince yourself you understand it. You can play with connections and perturb nodes, and have some idea what should happen to behavior when you play with the circuit in this way.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-neuroscience-and-ai">Implications for neuroscience and AI</h2>



<p>With the human brain containing more neurons than there are stars in the Milky Way, understanding its complexity is a daunting challenge.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, the latent circuit model opens new possibilities for studying how groups of interconnected neurons give rise to decision-making processes.</p>



<p>Disruptions in decision-making are a hallmark of numerous neurological and mental health disorders, including <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eating-fruit-can-protect-you-from-late-life-depression/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">depression</a>, schizophrenia, and ADHD. By revealing the mathematical computations that drive decision-making, this model may help researchers understand these conditions more effectively.</p>



<p>Beyond neuroscience, these insights could also enhance <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lawless-superintelligence-zero-evidence-ai-control-possible/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">artificial intelligence</a>. AI-driven systems, from digital assistants like Alexa to self-driving cars, rely on decision-making algorithms. Understanding how the human brain efficiently processes information could lead to more adaptable and intelligent AI systems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions-nbsp">Future research directions&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The next phase of research will involve applying the latent circuit model to other commonly studied decision-making tasks.</p>



<p>“A lot of the tightly controlled decision-making tasks that experimentalists study, I believe that they likely have relatively simple latent mechanisms,” Langdon said. “My hope is that we can start looking for these mechanisms now in those datasets.”</p>



<p>By refining this approach, neuroscientists aim to unlock more secrets of how the brain translates complex sensory inputs into clear, decisive actions.</p>

<p>Sixty-six million years ago, an asteroid impact near the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico ended the era of non-avian dinosaurs. But amid the global upheaval, certain birds - and the group that gave rise to today’s ducks and geese - found sanctuary in the temperate habitats of Antarctica.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Now, an article published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-024-08390-0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Nature</em></a> describes a nearly complete, 69-million-year-old fossil skull of <em>Vegavis iaai</em>, an early relative of modern waterfowl.</p>



<p>Study lead author Christopher Torres spent three years at <a href="https://www.ohio.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ohio University</a> as an NSF postdoctoral fellow. He investigated how various factors - ranging from ecological roles to brain anatomy - played into bird diversification and resilience to extinction.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Few birds are as likely to start as many arguments among paleontologists as <em>Vegavis</em>,” said Torres. “This new fossil is going to help resolve a lot of those arguments. Chief among them: where is <em>Vegavis</em> perched in the bird tree of life?”&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-controversy-surrounding-the-bird-fossil">Controversy surrounding the bird fossil </h2>



<p>Originally identified two decades ago by study co-author Julia Clarke of <a href="https://www.utexas.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The University of Texas at Austin</a> and colleagues, <em>Vegavis</em> was suggested to be a primitive modern (crown) bird related to waterfowl.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Yet, given the scarcity of modern-type birds before the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary, some researchers questioned <em>Vegavis</em>’s classification.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The newly studied fossil addresses these doubts because it incorporates anatomical regions absent from earlier fossils - particularly a nearly intact skull.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-notable-features-of-the-bird-skull">Notable features of the bird skull</h2>



<p>Skepticism surrounding the bird’s identity has largely been dispelled by notable skull features, including the structure of the beak and brain region, which align with traits found in present-day waterfowl.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The specimen further preserves strong jaw muscles, likely advantageous for diving and seizing fish - a departure from the feeding habits of most modern waterfowl but more reminiscent of species like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/common-loon-habitats-dramatically-altered-climate-change-pollution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">loons</a> and grebes.</p>



<p>These skull features, combined with other evidence in the skeleton, support the idea that <em>Vegavis</em> propelled itself through water with its feet in pursuit of aquatic prey - an approach that diverges from what is typical of modern ducks and geese.</p>



<p>“This fossil underscores that Antarctica has much to tell us about the earliest stages of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/modern-bird-feathers-contain-traces-of-dinosaur-feathers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">modern bird</a> evolution,” said co-author Patrick O’Connor, a paleontologist at Ohio University, and director of Earth and Space Sciences at <a href="https://www.dmns.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Denver Museum of Nature &amp; Science</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-late-cretaceous-bird-fossils">Late Cretaceous bird fossils</h2>



<p>Bird fossils from this Late Cretaceous interval in other regions of the world tend to look distinctly un-modern. </p>



<p>Moreover, localities that preserve delicate avian remains are quite rare, often providing fragments insufficient for determining much about the species’ evolutionary connections - mirroring the situation with <em>Vegavis</em> until now.</p>



<p>“And those few places with any substantial fossil record of Late <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extraordinary-dinosaur-fossils-discovered-from-the-end-of-cretaceous-era/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cretaceous</a> birds, like Madagascar and Argentina, reveal an aviary of bizarre, now-extinct species with teeth and long bony tails, only distantly related to modern birds,” said O’Connor.</p>



<p>“Something very different seems to have been happening in the far reaches of the Southern Hemisphere, specifically in Antarctica.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-antarctica-and-early-bird-evolution">Antarctica and early bird evolution </h2>



<p>Exactly how the Antarctic continent shaped the development of current ecosystems across deep time remains a focus of worldwide scientific inquiry.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to study co-author Matthew Lamanna of Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Antarctica is in many ways the final frontier for humanity’s understanding of life during the Age of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-did-dinosaurs-come-from-missing-fossils-hold-the-secret/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dinosaurs</a>.</p>



<p>“This discovery exemplifies the power of scientific research and the crucial role our institution plays in advancing knowledge about Earth's deep history,” said Ohio University President Lori Stewart Gonzalez.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This research not only enhances our understanding of early bird evolution but also highlights the invaluable contributions of Ohio graduate students and postdoctoral researchers who are at the forefront of these expeditions. It is through these global, expeditionary efforts - whether in the field or in the lab - that we can truly grasp the dynamic changes our planet has undergone over millions of years.” </p>



<p>Gonzalez noted that the study is a prime example of real-world experiential learning that connects STEM education with hands-on, transformative research, preparing the next generation of scientists to tackle the challenges of the future.</p>



<p>“Large-scale projects like this one, involving students and postdoctoral researchers, prepare the scientists of tomorrow to collaborate, advance science, and tackle the biggest questions facing our planet,” O’Connor concluded.</p>

<p>A new study suggests that our universe might not expand the same way in all directions - directly questioning a key tenet of cosmology called the Cosmological Principle.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This principle maintains that the universe has no center, nor any preferred directions, especially when observed on sufficiently large scales. Yet, a number of puzzling observations over the past few years have hinted that the cosmos may be more complicated than once believed.</p>



<p>The study was led by astrophysicist James Adam at the <a href="https://www.uwc.ac.za/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of the Western Cape</a> in South Africa.</p>



<p>“The cosmological principle is like an ultimate kind of statement of humility,” explained Adam. “According to it, not only are we not at the center of the universe, but a true center does not exist.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-assumptions-about-universe-expansion">Assumptions about universe expansion </h2>



<p>At present, the Standard Model of Cosmology - which describes the universe’s expansion, structure, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/universe-is-expanding-faster-than-science-can-explain-hubble-tension-physics-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolution</a> - rests on two assumptions: that the universe is homogeneous (the same in all places, when viewed at very large scales) and isotropic (the same in all directions).&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, recent cosmic measurements, including contradictory estimates of how fast the universe is expanding and anomalies in the cosmic microwave background, challenge the assumption of isotropy. If confirmed, they could mark a shift in how scientists view cosmic architecture.</p>



<p>Adam noted that these hints of anisotropy are not yet universally accepted because each method used to uncover them has its own limitations. Observers must collect additional data with independent techniques to verify the anomalies and rule out possible errors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-signatures-of-an-anisotropic-expansion">Signatures of an anisotropic expansion</h2>



<p>Adam and his research colleagues propose a fresh approach to determine whether the universe truly expands uniformly. Their method relies on weak gravitational lensing, in which massive objects warp the light traveling from distant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/galaxies-are-much-bigger-than-we-originally-believed-gas-clouds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies</a>, causing slight distortions in the observed galaxy shapes.</p>



<p>“We investigated a different method of constraining anisotropy which involved so-called weak gravitational lensing,” Adam said.</p>



<p>Weak lensing data can be broken down into two main components: E-mode shear - which aligns well with an isotropic and homogeneous universe - and B-mode shear, which should remain minimal on large scales if the universe truly has no preferred directions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, simply detecting B-modes wouldn’t suffice to confirm anisotropy because these signals can be extremely weak and prone to measurement artifacts.</p>



<p>Instead, Adam and colleagues show that if an anisotropic expansion does exist, it would cause E-modes and B-modes to correlate in a way that wouldn’t happen under an isotropic scenario.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team used computer simulations of how an anisotropic universe would imprint certain signatures on Euclid data, concluding that future real-world observations should be able to detect these signals if they indeed exist.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-data-from-the-euclid-space-mission">Data from the Euclid space mission</h2>



<p>Launched by the <a href="https://www.esa.int/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">European Space Agency</a> (ESA) in 2023, Euclid is a space observatory dedicated to mapping billions of galaxies. </p>



<p>Euclid’s instruments are designed to measure cosmic structures with greater precision than before, helping scientists study phenomena like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-energy-is-ripping-the-universe-apart-but-we-arent-sure-how/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dark energy</a>, dark matter, and now, potential anisotropies.</p>



<p>Adam and his team anticipate that once Euclid’s data becomes available, they can apply their new methodology to check for these crucial E-B correlations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Should the results confirm an anisotropic expansion, it would significantly challenge the assumption that the universe has no preferred directions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-alternative-frameworks-for-universe-expansion-nbsp">Alternative frameworks for universe expansion&nbsp;</h2>



<p>If Euclid’s forthcoming data indeed supports the notion that the universe expands at different rates in different directions, cosmologists will face the task of reconciling these results with the Standard Model of Cosmology.&nbsp;</p>



<p>That model has proven extraordinarily successful, explaining phenomena like the cosmic microwave background fluctuations and the formation of galaxies over billions of years.</p>



<p>However, many existing anomalies - ranging from Hubble tension (discrepancies in expansion rate measurements) to certain cosmic microwave background irregularities - may gain fresh context if isotropy no longer holds.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A confirmed departure from isotropy would force scientists to consider alternative theoretical frameworks or expansions of current models to account for this newfound complexity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-centerless-may-not-mean-symmetrical">“Centerless” may not mean “symmetrical”</h2>



<p>The Cosmological Principle stipulates not only that no center of the universe exists, but that from a large-scale perspective, the cosmos should look the same in all directions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Yet, the analogy often used is that of a balloon’s surface: as the balloon inflates, points on it recede from one another equally, lacking any focal center.&nbsp;</p>



<p>If observations confirm real anisotropies, this balloon analogy may need revision - or additional complexity - to explain directional differences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-chapter-in-cosmic-evolution-nbsp">New chapter in cosmic evolution&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Adam emphasized the importance of verifying anomalies through multiple lines of evidence. Even if weak lensing data from Euclid indicates anisotropy, researchers must also rule out systematic errors, selection biases, or instrumental artifacts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>If future surveys - like the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) at the <a href="https://rubinobservatory.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vera C. Rubin Observatory</a> - corroborate the same signals, scientists would have strong evidence to question isotropy as a fundamental assumption.</p>



<p>For now, the cosmological principle remains a cornerstone of modern cosmology, but one that may stand on increasingly shaky ground if these signals become robust.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Even a small deviation from isotropy would open a new chapter in understanding cosmic evolution and the underlying physics guiding our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shapes-of-one-million-galaxies-hint-at-the-universes-origins/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">universe</a>’s fate.</p>

Cosmic order or chaos? Universe expansion may follow a hidden pattern

A new study suggests that our universe might not expand...

<p>Could that fish dinner be messing with your body more than you realize? A study from the West Coast suggests it might be, showing that nearly all tested seafood contained cancer-linked <a href="https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/microplastics.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plastic</a> particles.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These tiny particles are smaller than a quarter of an inch. They weave their way into food, water, and even into the air, with questions lingering about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-are-widespread-in-the-seafood-we-eat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">potential harm</a> to human health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-almost-all-seafood-contains-plastic">Almost all seafood contains plastic</h2>



<p>The newly released study was led by Dr. Susanne Brander at Oregon State University. The experts found that 99 percent of tested seafood samples had particles embedded in their edible tissues.</p>



<p>Scientists suspect these bits can slip past an organism’s digestive tract and lodge elsewhere.</p>



<p>“It’s very concerning that microfibers appear to move from the gut into other tissues, which has wide implications for other organisms, potentially including humans too,” said Dr. Brander. </p>



<p>This finding raises important questions about whether certain species are more vulnerable to these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-discover-how-microplastics-accumulate-in-coral-reefs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plastic invasions</a> than others.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-smaller-seafood-holds-more-plastic">Smaller seafood holds more plastic</h2>



<p>Smaller fish and shellfish showed a noticeable tendency to harbor more particles than larger species. One prime example was pink shrimp, a popular choice in many seafood markets.</p>



<p>“We found that the smaller organisms that we sampled seem to be ingesting more anthropogenic, non-nutritious particles,” said Dr. Elise Granek from <a href="https://www.pdx.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Portland State University</a>.  </p>



<p>The word "anthropogenic" refers to environmental changes caused by human activities. The term highlights how everyday habits - like wearing synthetic clothes or tossing plastic packaging - are fueling <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hotspots-of-microplastic-pollution-found-in-the-north-sea/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">contamination</a> in marine habitats.</p>

These results show how important it is to find evidence-based help for problem behavior to improve the emotional health of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/friends-family-members-and-guardians-dogs-are-more-than-just-pets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dogs</a>, their owners and sustain their relationship.”</p>

<p><em>"</em>U.K. campaigns have long encouraged owners to consider their ability to care for a dog for the duration of its lifetime at acquisition. However, if the efficacy of these messages remains limited, greater interventions may be needed to emphasize the responsibilities of dog ownership, ideally prior to purchase.”</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
