<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>

<p>Tourists flock to nature reserves and national parks to witness the beauty of wildlife up close. Many hope to see lions basking in the sun, zebras grazing, or elephants gathering at waterholes. But while tourists observe animals, new research suggests that animals may also be reacting to human presence in ways that are not immediately obvious.</p>



<p>A study from the University of Georgia explores how African mammals, including lions and zebras, alter their daily routines when humans are nearby. This change does not affect only one <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-tool-superanimal-can-accurately-analyze-animal-behavior/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> - it ripples through the entire ecosystem. Carnivores react to human activity, and herbivores, in turn, adjust to changes in predator behavior.</p>



<p>Tourism continues to grow worldwide, increasing the frequency of human-animal interactions. While studying wildlife, researchers spend days (or even weeks)  tracking populations, further increasing human presence.</p>



<p>Understanding how this affects animal behavior is critical for conservation efforts and the long-term survival of species in the wild.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-animal-behavior">Tracking animal behavior</h2>



<p>The study focused on waterholes, essential gathering points for many species, especially during dry seasons. The research team placed camera traps near these waterholes, capturing images whenever an animal passed by.</p>



<p>This method allowed scientists to track animal activity at different times and compare <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stress-is-contagious-and-this-applies-to-animals-too/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">behavior</a> during three specific periods - before tourists arrived, while they were present, and after they left. The study ran for two years, providing valuable insight into how human presence shapes the rhythms of the animal kingdom.</p>



<p>Study lead author Jessy Patterson is a doctoral candidate in <a href="https://warnell.uga.edu/beasleylab" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jim Beasley’s lab</a> at the UGA Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources and Savannah River Ecology Laboratory.</p>



<p>“When humans are present, some animals shift their daily activity patterns,” said Patterson. "We think that the carnivores changed because of the human presence, and the herbivores changed because of the carnivore presence. It was not just one species that altered their behavior.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-animals-change-their-schedules-around-tourists">Animals change their schedules around tourists</h2>



<p>The research revealed a surprising shift in how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-animal-will-replace-humans-as-earths-dominant-species-this-scientist-has-an-idea/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animals</a> use waterholes. When no humans were around, each species followed a predictable pattern, coming to drink at specific times. However, when humans were present, these patterns changed.</p>



<p>Some animals started visiting waterholes earlier than usual, while others delayed their visits. This shift meant that species that would typically avoid each other began sharing the same space. For herbivores, this could be dangerous, as it increased the likelihood of running into predators at unexpected times.</p>



<p>Tourism is a major source of income for many conservation areas, bringing funding for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/virtual-reality-uncovers-how-animals-see-the-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildlife</a> protection and economic opportunities for local communities. However, as this study suggests, human activity has effects beyond what is immediately visible. </p>



<p>Understanding these impacts is crucial for balancing tourism with the needs of the animals that call these habitats home.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nocturnal-carnivores-became-active-in-the-day">Nocturnal carnivores became active in the day</h2>



<p>The study took place at the <a href="https://orc.eco" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ongava Research Centre</a> in Namibia, a private nature reserve that borders a national park with a high level of tourist activity.</p>



<p>In this region, water is scarce during the dry season, making man-made waterholes vital for both predators and prey. Because these locations consistently attract animals and tourists, they provided an ideal setting for researchers to observe behavior changes.</p>



<p>Over the two-year study, camera traps recorded activity patterns of four major carnivore species: the spotted hyena, black-backed jackal, brown hyena, and African lion. </p>



<p>Normally, these predators hunt and drink water at night, avoiding human activity during daylight hours. However, the researchers found that they started coming to the waterholes more frequently during the day.</p>



<p>“We assumed that carnivores were accustomed to more human activity during the day, but not at night,” said Patterson. “Having humans at the waterholes at night, when they typically aren’t there, maybe threw the animals off a bit and made them nervous.”</p>



<p>This shift in behavior could have serious consequences for the balance between predators and prey.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-prey-species-faced-greater-risks">Prey species faced greater risks</h2>



<p>Herbivores also responded to these changes by shifting their own schedules. Some species, including the duiker, springbok, mountain zebra, and plains zebra, altered their routines to avoid the carnivores that had started visiting waterholes during the day.</p>



<p>Instead of drinking water during their usual daylight hours, they began arriving at night. This change might have helped some herbivores stay safer, but it also introduced new risks. </p>



<p>Not all species adjusted their behavior, meaning some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/animals-and-possibly-even-insects-have-emotions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animals</a> still visited waterholes during the day, now facing predators that normally would not be there.</p>



<p>“There are many other herbivore species that are still active during the day and overlap with those carnivores now,” said Patterson. “That can change the dynamics of the ecosystem, and some animals could get preyed upon during times of the day when they usually feel safer.”</p>



<p>For some herbivores, this shift could mean an increased risk of predation at times they would typically consider safe. Over time, these changes might impact population dynamics and disrupt the delicate balance of predator-prey relationships.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tourist-presence-and-animal-conservation">Tourist presence and animal conservation</h2>



<p>Beyond shifting schedules, the presence of humans may also increase stress levels for certain animals. </p>



<p>While some species appear to adapt, others may experience anxiety or alter their natural behaviors in ways that are not immediately apparent. Increased stress can affect feeding, mating, and overall health.</p>



<p>However, despite these concerns, wildlife tourism remains a powerful tool for conservation. It raises awareness about endangered species, provides financial support for protected areas, and offers economic benefits to communities that rely on eco-tourism.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-striking-a-balance-for-animals-and-tourists">Striking a balance for animals and tourists</h2>



<p>Tourism provides crucial funding for conservation efforts, but it also introduces challenges. The more humans interact with wild <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/animal-tracking-is-crucial-for-preserving-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animals</a>, the greater the potential for unintended consequences. Finding ways to reduce these impacts while still supporting conservation efforts is essential.</p>



<p>“But it also takes a very pristine environment and brings people into it,” said Patterson. “I certainly appreciate wildlife-based tourism, and I support it. We just need to fully understand how we’re impacting the animals and come up with strategies to minimize that.”</p>

<p>As tourism continues to grow, researchers and conservationists must consider how tourists presence affects animal behavior. By understanding these interactions, strategies can be developed to ensure that both animals and eco-tourism can thrive in harmony.</p>

Animals change their daily schedules when tourists are watching

Tourists flock to nature reserves and national parks to witness...

<p>The universe is full of mysteries, many of which remain unseen until technology advances enough to reveal them. Scientists have long sought deeper insights into dark matter, dark energy, and the fundamental forces shaping the cosmos. </p>



<p>The European Space Agency’s Euclid telescope was designed to explore these mysteries, offering a new perspective on the structure of the universe, including rare phenomena like the Einstein ring.</p>



<p>Euclid launched on July 1, 2023, beginning a six-year mission to map billions of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/galaxies-are-much-bigger-than-we-originally-believed-gas-clouds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies</a> and reveal the invisible forces shaping their movements. Before the spacecraft could start its full survey, scientists needed to test its instruments and verify that everything functioned correctly.</p>



<p>During this testing phase in September 2023, Euclid sent back a series of preliminary images. These images were meant to confirm the telescope’s alignment and functionality.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-surprise-in-blurry-images">A surprise in blurry images</h2>



<p>Bruno Altieri, a <a href="https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Euclid/(archive)/0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Euclid</a> Archive Scientist, was among those analyzing the incoming data. Even in the out-of-focus images, he noticed something unusual. A subtle but striking pattern caught his attention, prompting him to investigate further.</p>



<p>“I look at the data from Euclid as it comes in,” noted Altieri. “Even from that first observation, I could see it, but after Euclid made more observations of the area, we could see a perfect Einstein ring. For me, with a lifelong interest in gravitational lensing, that was amazing.”</p>



<p>This unexpected discovery was hiding in a familiar galaxy, NGC 6505, located about 590 million light-years from Earth. In cosmic terms, this is remarkably close. </p>



<p>Despite its proximity and the fact that astronomers have studied this galaxy for over a century, the phenomenon within it had remained unnoticed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-science-behind-the-einstein-ring">Science behind the Einstein ring</h2>



<p>At the heart of this discovery is the phenomenon of gravitational lensing. </p>



<p>Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity predicts that massive objects bend light as it travels through space. This effect, known as gravitational lensing, allows galaxies and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bullseye-galaxy-reveals-stunning-rings-after-galactic-impact/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">clusters of galaxies</a> to act as giant cosmic magnifiers.</p>



<p>The Einstein ring around NGC 6505 is created by light from a much more distant galaxy located 4.42 billion light-years away. As the light from this background galaxy passes near NGC 6505, the gravity of the foreground galaxy bends and distorts it. </p>



<p>When the alignment is perfect, the light forms a striking circle around the foreground object, creating what astronomers call an Einstein ring.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-rare-and-valuable-discovery">A rare and valuable discovery</h2>



<p>Strong gravitational lenses like this are rare. They provide crucial opportunities for astronomers to study the properties of dark matter and measure the expansion of the universe.</p>



<p>“An Einstein ring is an example of strong gravitational lensing,” explained Conor O’Riordan from the <a href="https://www.mpa-garching.mpg.de" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics</a>.</p>



<p>“All strong lenses are special, because they're so rare, and they're incredibly useful scientifically. This one is particularly special, because it’s so close to Earth and the alignment makes it very beautiful.”</p>



<p>This Einstein ring is unique not only because of its proximity but also because of its perfect shape. The alignment between the foreground and background <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/two-enormous-fermi-bubbles-discovered-towering-above-and-below-our-milky-way-galaxy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies</a> is nearly exact, making the ring exceptionally clear.</p>



<p>Such clarity allows scientists to study the properties of both galaxies in greater detail than ever before.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-einstein-ring-features-revealed-by-euclid">Einstein ring features revealed by Euclid</h2>



<p>One of the most astonishing aspects of this discovery is that it was made within a well-known galaxy. NGC 6505 was first documented in 1884, yet this remarkable feature within it had remained unnoticed until Euclid’s high-resolution instruments captured it.</p>



<p>“I find it very intriguing that this ring was observed within a well-known <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spiral-galaxy-with-quasar-jet-surprises-astronomers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxy</a>, which was first discovered in 1884,” said Valeria Pettorino, ESA Euclid Project Scientist.</p>



<p>“The galaxy has been known to astronomers for a very long time. And yet this ring was never observed before. This demonstrates how powerful Euclid is, finding new things even in places we thought we knew well." </p>



<p>"This discovery is very encouraging for the future of the Euclid mission and demonstrates its fantastic capabilities.”</p>



<p>If such a spectacular structure was waiting to be found in a well-documented galaxy, scientists wonder what other surprises Euclid might uncover as it explores deeper into the universe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mapping-the-universe-in-3d">Mapping the universe in 3D</h2>



<p>The Euclid telescope is designed to go far beyond individual discoveries like this Einstein ring. </p>



<p>Its primary mission is to create the most extensive 3D map of the universe ever constructed. Over the next six years, Euclid will survey more than a third of the sky, analyzing billions of galaxies and tracing their distribution across cosmic time.</p>



<p>One of the most exciting aspects of Euclid’s mission is its ability to find strong gravitational lenses. Scientists estimate that the telescope will discover around 100,000 of these lenses, providing an enormous dataset for studying dark matter and dark energy. </p>



<p>Until now, fewer than 1,000 strong lenses had been identified, and even fewer had been imaged with high resolution. The discovery of this Einstein ring so early in the mission signals that Euclid is on track to surpass all expectations.</p>



<p>“Euclid is going to revolutionize the field, with all this data we've never had before,” said O’Riordan.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-analyzing-billions-of-galaxies">Analyzing billions of galaxies</h2>



<p>While the Einstein ring around NGC 6505 is an exciting find, Euclid’s primary goal is even more ambitious. The telescope is designed to study weak gravitational lensing, a subtle effect that slightly stretches and shifts the shapes of background galaxies. </p>



<p>Unlike strong lensing, which creates dramatic rings, weak lensing is far more difficult to detect. To measure this effect, scientists will analyze the shapes of billions of galaxies and use this data to map the distribution of dark matter <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/evidence-of-massive-early-universe-black-hole-stuns-astronomers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">across the cosmos</a>.</p>



<p>Euclid began its full survey on February 14, 2024, and is steadily building a comprehensive view of the Universe’s structure. With each new observation, it has the potential to reveal hidden patterns and unlock secrets that have remained concealed for billions of years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-mission-filled-with-possibilities">A mission filled with possibilities</h2>



<p>The discovery of this Einstein ring is just the beginning. Euclid’s ability to capture such fine details in a nearby galaxy hints at the extraordinary discoveries that await in the coming years. </p>



<p>Scientists anticipate that as more data arrives, Euclid will provide unprecedented insights into the nature of dark matter, dark energy, and the forces that shape the universe.</p>



<p>By pushing the boundaries of what we can observe, Euclid is not only deepening our understanding of the cosmos but also proving that even in well-explored regions, there is always something new waiting to be discovered.</p>

Stunning 'Einstein ring' warping space-time captured by Euclid

The universe is full of mysteries, many of which remain...

<p>The far side of the moon holds many mysteries, including massive trenches near its south pole that have long puzzled astronomers. </p>



<p>Recent findings suggest that these formations, comparable in size to the Grand Canyon, likely took shape in just minutes. Scientists believe they were sculpted by the immense forces unleashed by an ancient impact billions of years ago.</p>



<p>David Kring of the Lunar and Planetary Institute of the <a href="https://www.usra.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Universities Space Research Association</a> in Houston played a leading role in investigating this phenomenon. </p>



<p>Along with fellow researchers, Kring found that the ancient collision hurled massive amounts of rocky debris across the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-recent-mini-moon-2024-pt5-seems-to-be-a-lost-fragment-of-our-real-moon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lunar surface</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-formation-speed">Unexpected formation speed</h2>



<p>Computer simulations point to an extraordinary <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-55675-z" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">event</a> that occurred about 3.8 billion years ago. </p>



<p>A 15-mile-wide space rock released energy equivalent to about 130 times the global stockpile of nuclear weapons in under 10 minutes.</p>



<p>The catastrophic force tore two canyons, each stretching around 170 miles in length. One is roughly 2.2 miles deep, while the other descends about 1.7 miles below the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-the-moon-looks-100-million-years-younger-than-its-true-age/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">surface</a>.</p>

<p>"Knots of rock within that curtain of debris hit the surface in a series of smaller impact events, effectively carving the canyons," said Kring.</p>



<p>Data from NASA’s <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/lro/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter</a> revealed that boulders sped across the moon at nearly 2,200 miles per hour. </p>



<p>Straight-line features near the <a href="https://www.lpi.usra.edu/science/schrodinger/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Schrödinger impact basin</a> trace the path of these ejected fragments. This basin rests on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/experts-are-searching-for-viable-sources-of-water-on-the-moon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moon</a>’s far side, forming one of the last massive craters in the inner solar system’s era of heavy bombardment.</p>



<p>Our planet has lost most evidence of similar events because of <a href="https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/plate-tectonics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plate tectonics</a>. Sections of Earth’s crust shift and plunge under each other, recycling ancient terrain and erasing old scars.</p>

<p>The researchers link the ancient collision to a time when Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune may have shifted their orbits. These changes are thought to have triggered a <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/nature03676" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">surge of asteroids</a> directed toward the inner solar system.</p>

<p>For centuries, humans have shaped the traits of domesticated animals to meet their needs. From larger cows producing more milk to dogs bred for specific temperaments, selective breeding has transformed species in remarkable ways. Recent research on German pigs has revealed just how quickly these changes can occur.</p>



<p>A team from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (<a href="https://www.uni-halle.de/?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MLU</a>) has found that German domestic pigs have experienced dramatic skull modifications within a century. </p>



<p>Their snouts have shortened, and their foreheads have flattened, traits that were not intentionally selected. The findings provide fresh insight into the unintended <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/old-and-wise-animals-are-essential-for-the-survival-of-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">consequences</a> of breeding practices.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-century-of-change-in-pig-breeding">A century of change in pig breeding</h2>



<p>Pigs have been an essential part of human agriculture for thousands of years. Over time, their appearance has shifted significantly, influenced by both natural and human-driven factors. </p>



<p>In Germany, the early 20th century marked a turning point in pig breeding, as demand for pork increased dramatically. Farmers prioritized traits such as rapid growth, high fertility, and efficient meat production.</p>



<p>"The demand for pork in Germany increased significantly at the beginning of the 20th century, and breeders were encouraged to optimize their animals. They needed them to grow quickly, provide good meat, and be fertile," explained Dr. Renate Schafberg, Head of the Domestic Animal Collection at MLU.</p>



<p>To understand the impact of these breeding efforts, Dr. Schafberg worked with Dr. Ashleigh Haruda from Oxford University to analyze 135 pig skulls from different time periods.</p>



<p>The study included two domestic breeds - Deutsches Edelschwein and Deutsches Landschwein - as well as wild boars, which served as a control group. The results revealed a striking transformation in domestic pigs, while wild boars showed no comparable changes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surprising-skull-modifications">Surprising skull modifications</h2>



<p>One of the most significant findings of the study was the extent of skull changes in domesticated pigs. Their snouts became notably shorter, and their foreheads lost their outward curve. These modifications occurred in both domestic breeds, despite the fact that they were raised separately.</p>



<p>"We didn’t expect such pronounced differences to appear within a span of only 100 years," said Dr. Schafberg. The fact that both breeds experienced similar changes suggests that the modifications were not the result of direct selection for skull shape.</p>



<p>"These changes occurred even though breeders did not select the animals specifically for their skull shape, as this trait was not important for breeding. Instead, the changes appear to be an unintended by-product of selecting the desired traits," noted Dr. Schafberg.</p>



<p>This discovery highlights how the pursuit of specific breeding goals can lead to unforeseen alterations in an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-animal-will-replace-humans-as-earths-dominant-species-this-scientist-has-an-idea/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animal</a>’s physical structure.</p>

<p>By contrast, wild boars continue to consume a varied diet, including roots, nuts, and small animals. Their skulls have remained unchanged over the past century, suggesting that their natural feeding habits have helped maintain their original features. </p>



<p>The study raises intriguing questions about the relationship between diet and physical evolution in domesticated animals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-power-of-human-influence">Power of human influence</h2>



<p>The findings demonstrate the remarkable speed at which human intervention can shape animal species. While many assume that significant evolutionary changes take millions of years, selective breeding can accelerate these processes dramatically.</p>



<p>"Charles Darwin assumed that long periods of time - millions of years - are required for major changes to take place. Our work is further proof that humans can greatly accelerate this process through selective breeding," said co-author Dr. Frank Steinheimer, Head of the Central Repository of Natural Science Collections at MLU.</p>



<p>These insights have broader implications for agriculture and animal husbandry. As selective breeding continues to shape domesticated animals, researchers must consider the potential consequences, both intended and unintended. </p>



<p>The study serves as a reminder that even small changes in breeding practices can have <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/birds-are-moving-north-and-breeding-earlier-in-a-changing-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lasting effects</a> on animal physiology.</p>

<p>The research delves deep beneath the Earth's surface, uncovering a fascinating history in which a geographic hotspot may have played a key role in shaping the Great Lakes.</p>



<p>If confirmed, this discovery could reshape how we perceive not just these lakes, but the geological history of North America itself.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-great-lakes-the-basics">Understanding the Great Lakes - the basics</h2>



<p>The Great Lakes - Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario - form the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth. </p>



<p>These massive bodies of water hold about 84% of North America's fresh surface water, shaping the landscape and climate of the surrounding regions. </p>



<p>Cities like Chicago, Toronto, and Detroit owe much of their development to these lakes, which act as natural highways and economic lifelines.</p>



<p>Despite their beauty and importance, the Great Lakes face serious environmental challenges. Pollution, invasive species, and climate change threaten their delicate balance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-story-of-the-great-lakes">The story of the Great Lakes </h2>



<p>The research was conducted at the <a href="https://uh.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Houston</a>, where scientists came across an unexpected protagonist in the story of the Great Lakes. </p>



<p>The Cape Verde hotspot, currently located under the island nation in the Central Atlantic Ocean, is suggested to be the main player in designing the Great Lakes.</p>



<p>"We saw something strange in this area,” said Aibing Li, a&nbsp;UH&nbsp;seismologist and co-author of the study. “Before, people thought the Great Lakes were formed during the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-the-ice-age-can-tell-us-about-future-el-nino-events/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice age</a>. Our study shows it started from the deep mantle.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-effects-of-an-ancient-hotspot">Effects of an ancient hotspot</h2>



<p>The revelations from the study imply a journey that began hundreds of millions of years ago, long before the supercontinent <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/australia-north-america-supercontinent/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pangaea</a> began to drift apart. </p>



<p>As North America split from this supercontinent and moved above the Cape Verde hotspot, it traversed the area where the Great Lakes currently reside.</p>



<p>Hotspots are intriguing geophysical phenomena, essentially plumes of hot material rising from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-volcanic-hotspots-are-all-connected-to-earths-interior-mantle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth's mantle</a>.</p>



<p>When interacting with the Earth's surface, they can manifest as volcanoes. However, the effects of an ancient hotspot once housed in a continent can be harder to detect. </p>



<p>“When the hotspot was in the continent, it behaved differently from when they were in the ocean,” said Li. “But if the hotspot was in the continent, the lithosphere (the rigid, outermost layer of Earth) is very thick - we don’t see the impact.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-forces-beneath-earth-s-crust">Hidden forces beneath Earth's crust </h2>



<p>The team used a seismic velocity anisotropy model in northeastern America, which encompassed the eastern part of the Great Lakes region. </p>



<p>They discovered an anomaly beneath the crust - earthquake waves traveling at different speeds horizontally and vertically.</p>



<p>Initially, the researchers did not consider a hotspot to be involved. However, closer examination of plate movements revealed that the Cape Verde hotspot had once been positioned under the modern-day Great Lakes' location, dating back 200 to 300 million years ago.</p>



<p>“My colleague showed me a video of hotspots and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/life-earth-tectonic-plates/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plate movement</a>. We saw the Cape Verde hotspot was right where the Great Lakes were for a pretty long time,” said Li.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rewriting-the-origin-of-lakes">Rewriting the origin of lakes</h2>



<p>This discovery sheds new light on the forces that shaped the Great Lakes and, conceivably, other lakes or land masses around North America.</p>



<p>"This is a new idea, a change of the notion that lakes are formed more recently due to processes near the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/life-on-earth-may-have-first-sparked-in-shallow-soda-lakes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">surface</a>,” noted the researchers.</p>



<p>This new theory also raises interesting questions about the dynamics of hotspot-continent interaction and the possible effects of a hotspot on varied lithosphere types at different depths and surfaces.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-on-lake-formation">Future research on lake formation</h2>



<p>While this remarkable study challenges long-held assumptions about lake formation, it also paves the way for new questions and research avenues.</p>



<p>Understanding how ancient hotspots interact with thick continental lithospheres could lead to broader insights into Earth’s geological evolution. </p>



<p>Future studies will likely investigate whether other major lakes and basins, such as those in Africa or Asia, were shaped by similar deep-mantle processes.</p>



<p>Moreover, the study highlights the need for interdisciplinary approaches that combine seismic imaging, plate tectonics, and geochemical analysis to paint a more complete picture of how Earth’s landscapes have evolved over millions of years.</p>



<p>As scientists refine their models and expand their focus to other regions, this research may not only reshape our understanding of the Great Lakes but also redefine the forces that have sculpted our planet’s surface.</p>

<p>Screen time has become an unavoidable part of modern childhood, with televisions, tablets, and smartphones capturing the attention of even the youngest minds. </p>



<p>Each moment of a toddler's day is filled with discovery, growth, and learning, but as digital devices become increasingly woven into daily routines, concerns arise about their potential impact on early development. </p>



<p>Could too much screen time derail this crucial stage of cognitive and language growth? An international team of researchers set out to answer this question, and their findings suggest that the answer might be yes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-screen-time-and-language-development">Screen time and language development</h2>



<p>The research team included scientists from over 20 nations. Together, they carried out an extensive study to understand how screen time affects toddlers' <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/talking-to-babies-in-parentese-boosts-their-language-development/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">language development</a>.</p>



<p>Spanning from August 2021 until March 2023, the study explored the lives of 1,878 toddlers between the ages of 12 to 48 months across Latin America.</p>



<p>The experts investigated how the children interacted with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/excessive-smartphone-usage-linked-to-health-issues-in-adolescents/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">smartphones</a> and other devices. They also analyzed how screen time impacted the developmental progress of the toddlers.</p>



<p>"Descriptive studies show that children use screens before two years of age for an average of one hour a day or more," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>"This reported use goes against the recommendations of pediatric societies, which advise against screen use for children under two years and suggests shared use with parents after two years."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sources-of-toddler-screen-time">Sources of toddler screen time</h2>



<p>The analysis revealed that the young children most often engaged with television and smartphones. The study confirmed that toddlers' daily screen exposure often exceeds one hour, with TV and background TV serving as the primary sources. </p>



<p>The genre of content most consumed was entertainment, closely followed by music and educational programming. </p>



<p>The experts also found that screen time was not dramatically influenced by socio-economic status (SES) or nationality.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-screen-time-and-delayed-language">Screen time and delayed language</h2>



<p>One might think that this growing engagement with electronic devices is merely a sign of our modern times, but the consequences might be far more severe. </p>



<p>The study’s results revealed a negative association between screen time and language development. More screen exposure was linked to lower lexical density and delayed language milestone progress.</p>



<p>In simpler terms, the more time that children spend in the virtual world of screens, the more their real-world <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/native-language-is-specially-stored-in-the-brain-for-easy-access/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">language</a> skills seem to suffer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shared-screen-time-and-books">Shared screen time and books</h2>



<p>On the other hand, not all screen time was found to be detrimental to the toddlers. Shared screen engagement with adults and exposure to books appeared to shift the narrative, positively impacting language skills.</p>



<p>While the TV might be a foe when viewed alone, it seems to transform into an ally when the experience is shared with an adult.</p>



<p>The study’s results are clear: unchecked screen time negatively impacts early language development. However, adult-supervised screen time and exposure to books can serve as shields, protecting and even promoting toddlers' language skills.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>



<p>With the rapidly evolving nature of technology, it's likely that screen use among toddlers will only increase and become more complex.</p>



<p>But the findings of this study offer a glimmer of hope. The research demonstrates that while screen time might be an inevitable part of our modern world, its potential negative impacts are not. </p>



<p>With more research, we can gain a better understanding of how to maximize the benefits - and mitigate the drawbacks - of toddler screen time.</p>

<p>Researchers have introduced a new material that is as sturdy as steel yet as airy as foam. They harnessed the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and a high-precision 3D printer to fine-tune its shape, aiming for maximum strength without adding weight to the material.</p>



<p>According to the engineers, their invention could have major implications for manufacturing items that require both strength and lightness, particularly vehicles aiming to improve fuel efficiency.</p>



<p>Professor Tobin Filleter from the <a href="https://www.utoronto.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Toronto</a> helped lead this effort, bringing years of expertise in the mechanical behavior of materials. </p>



<p>He and his team worked alongside collaborators who explored ways to build micro-scale <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/graphene-wonder-material-changing-the-world-is-officially-declared-safe-for-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">structures</a> with precisely arranged features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-searching-for-the-right-shape">Searching for the right shape</h2>



<p>The researchers started by testing possible shapes through computer simulations, and attempting to distribute applied stresses evenly. </p>



<p>This meant reducing weak points, which often cause sudden collapses in conventional lightweight <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/construction-materials-could-store-carbon-in-homes-and-buildings-helping-the-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">structures</a>.</p>



<p>"It didn't just replicate successful geometries from the training data; it learned from what changes to the shapes worked and what didn't, enabling it to predict entirely new lattice geometries," said Peter Serles, an engineering researcher at <a href="https://www.caltech.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Caltech</a>.</p>



<p>The planning phase fed a machine learning algorithm that learned how each shape withstood pressure. But, it did more than just rehash old ideas.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-using-ai-for-better-material-designs">Using AI for better material designs</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exposing-the-hidden-climate-costs-of-everyday-materials/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Traditional</a> materials often force a compromise between strength and toughness. Many ceramic-like substances can bear large loads but shatter easily. The team wanted something that balanced both.</p>



<p>They relied on <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41563-021-01147-4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nano-architected designs</a> to reach that sweet spot. By incorporating carefully engineered patterns at the microscopic scale, these <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.1252291" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">structures</a> can achieve higher load capacities than bulk materials of the same density.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-taking-advantage-of-3d-printing">Taking advantage of 3D printing</h2>



<p>Once the algorithm suggested the best <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-process-converts-microplastics-into-valuable-graphene-wonder-material/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">shapes</a>, the researchers used a specialized 3D printer that works with polymers at incredibly fine scales.</p>



<p>Next, they baked these printed lattices to leave behind carbon. The result is a <a href="https://advanced.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/adma.201701850" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nanolattice</a> that resists high stress without crumbling.</p>

<p>Advanced machines allow delicate features to be printed in a fraction of an inch, which opens doors for more complex geometries. That means scientists can now make shapes they once only imagined in simulations.</p>

<p>"We hope that these new material designs will eventually lead to ultra-light weight components in aerospace applications, such as planes, helicopters and spacecraft, that can reduce fuel demands during flight while maintaining safety and performance," said Filleter.</p>



<p>If a craft needs less fuel, emissions decrease, along with operating costs.</p>



<p>One researcher explained that swapping titanium parts for this lighter alternative might yield yearly fuel savings of around 21 gallons for every 2.2 pounds (80 liters for every 10 kilograms) of material replaced. That adds up over multiple flights and repeated journeys across the globe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-expanding-beyond-aerospace">Expanding beyond aerospace</h2>



<p>While the most obvious applications are in aviation and space travel, other industries could also benefit from these ultra-light, ultra-strong <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-system-captures-carbon-dioxide-directly-from-air/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">materials</a>.</p>



<p>The automotive sector, for instance, constantly seeks ways to improve fuel efficiency and battery range in electric vehicles. Lighter chassis and structural components could make a meaningful impact on performance.</p>



<p>Medical technology is another promising area. Researchers are exploring how these nano-architected materials might lead to stronger yet lightweight prosthetics, implants, and medical devices. </p>



<p>Reducing material weight while maintaining strength could make wearable medical gear more comfortable and effective.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scaling-up-and-moving-forward">Scaling up and moving forward</h2>



<p>The next challenge is to produce larger pieces without losing the benefits seen in the lab. Figuring out how to manufacture greater volumes of this carbon-based structure at a reasonable cost is high on the agenda.</p>



<p>Engineers also plan to experiment with variations that maintain stiffness while shaving off more weight. </p>



<p>Each new design is another opportunity for the algorithm to refine its predictive skills, potentially raising strength limits even further.</p>

Researchers have introduced a new material that is as sturdy...

<p>Archaeologists in eastern Kazakhstan have identified a puzzling structure that has sparked curiosity across global research circles. The newly unearthed site, dating back 3,800 years, features a six-sided outline that researchers call a pyramid.</p>



<p>Experts suggest that the monument stands around 10 feet (3 meters) high, leading some to believe it served a special purpose in its day. It shows a geometric design that has never before been documented in this region.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracing-an-ancient-identity">Tracing an ancient identity</h2>



<p>Archaeologists from the <a href="https://www.enu.kz/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">L. N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University</a>, led by <a href="https://www.enu.kz/en/news/497" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ulan Umitkaliyev</a>, began exploring the <a href="https://arkeonews.net/tag/kyrykungir-complex-monument/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kyrykungir</a> site near Toktamys village in 2014. Their fieldwork exposed a labyrinth that appeared to guide visitors toward a central grave.</p>



<p>“The steppe pyramid is built with great precision; it is hexagonal. There are thirteen meters [43 feet] and eight rows of stones between each face,” said Umitkaliyev in an official statement shared across academic outlets.</p>



<p>Geometry held deep meaning for many Bronze Age societies across Asia. Builders often combined artistry and astronomy when planning large communal structures.</p>



<p>Certain groups in this area constructed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/solar-eclipse-may-have-changed-the-architecture-of-ancient-egypt-forever/">funerary monuments</a> with earthen mounds to signal respect for influential members. Some experts think these layers of soil might have also helped preserve delicate objects buried below.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-layers-of-culture-and-craftsmanship">Layers of culture and craftsmanship</h2>



<p>Researchers came across horse remains and elaborate ceramics, indicating that residents honored animals in their customs. A set of gold earrings was also recovered from the site, suggesting that metalwork had reached a high level of artistry here.</p>



<p>Experts link the site to the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1563011011000122" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Andronovo</a> communities, who thrived in parts of Central Asia from about 2000 to 900 BCE. They were known for domesticating horses and constructing stone structures that showed advanced skills.</p>



<p>One large outer wall of this hexagon was formed with megalithic stones, while the interior had multiple circles. No one is entirely sure if the entire space once had a roof or if it was left open to the elements.</p>



<p>It was reported that each of the six sides measures around 42 feet (13 meters) in length. The structure had an earthen covering at some point, though its current state shows plenty of exposure.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crucial-rare-earth-elements-discovered-coal-mines-united-states/">Items discovered</a> inside reflect the daily routines of a pastoral culture that relied on herding for survival. Bronze tools and ornaments suggest that trade networks provided essential metals and creative ideas.</p>



<p>Archaeological analysis indicates that animals were key symbols of community wealth in this region. Horse bones near the stone complexes reveal how these creatures supported transport and possibly ceremonial rites.</p>

<p>Think back to the vibrant coral reef ecosystems often depicted in cartoons during your childhood - thriving habitats teeming with fish, anemones, and other marine life. In reality, many of these reefs are now facing severe environmental stress and declining health. However, innovative solutions offer hope for their recovery. </p>



<p>One such advancement is the Underwater Zooplankton Enhancement Light Array (UZELA), a programmable, autonomous submersible light system developed by researchers to support coral reef ecosystems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-artificial-light-to-boost-coral-reefs">Artificial light to boost coral reefs</h2>



<p>UZELA is designed to attract zooplankton - microscopic aquatic organisms that serve as a crucial food source for corals - by emitting specific wavelengths of light. </p>



<p>By enhancing local <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/zooplankton-are-rapidly-escalating-the-threat-of-nanoplastics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">zooplankton</a> availability, this technology has the potential to bolster coral nutrition and resilience in the face of environmental challenges.</p>



<p>After a rigorous six-month testing period on two species of coral native to Hawaii, researchers found that UZELA significantly increased local zooplankton density and boosted the feeding rates of both healthy and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bleached-coral-reefs-recover-quickly-in-the-absence-of-human-influences/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bleached coral</a>. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reefs-on-the-brink-of-collapse">Reefs on the brink of collapse</h2>



<p>Providing corals with greater amounts of food makes them stronger and more likely to be resilient against certain environmental threats, such as heat stress and ocean acidification.</p>



<p><em>"</em>This result is particularly striking, especially as rising ocean temperatures are pushing entire coral reefs to the brink of collapse,<em>"</em> said Andrea Grottoli, lead author of the study and a professor of earth sciences at <a href="https://www.osu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Ohio State University</a>.</p>



<p>“Coral reefs house one-third of all marine species, yet occupy less than 1% of the ocean,” she added. “They are disproportionately responsible for ocean health, and we’re at risk of losing them.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-valuable-tool-for-coral-reef-restoration">Valuable tool for coral reef restoration </h2>



<p>Millions of people rely on coral reefs, as they support fishing industries and protect coastal communities from threats such as erosion and floods. </p>



<p>However, at the current rate of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-warming-is-accelerating-beyond-control-as-co2-levels-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global warming</a>, projections indicate that these vital coral reefs could face complete devastation by 2050, endangering the delicate ecosystems they sustain.</p>



<p>Although UZELA is only a short-term solution, Grottoli believes the artificial light system could be a valuable tool for coral restoration efforts.</p>



<p>“Think of it as a band-aid for about a couple decades,” Grottoli said. “It can protect some corals in some places, sometimes.”</p>



<p>The team also discovered that UZELA, which operates for six months on a single battery, optimizes coral feeding time by functioning for just one hour after sunset each day. </p>



<p>While artificial lights have the potential to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-impacting-marine-life-more-than-we-realized/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">disrupt marine life</a>, researchers emphasize that UZELA does not harm the environment or interfere with the movement of other zooplankton in the area.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-artificial-light-benefits-for-coral-reefs">Artificial light benefits for coral reefs</h2>



<p>“If you imagine zooplankton in a column floating above coral, instead of being naturally dispersed, UZELA is just pulling them down, but it’s not taking away from the coral beside it,” explained Grottoli. </p>



<p>“We show that if you put the coral close to the light, they benefit from that concentrated zooplankton, and feeding rates go up 10- to 50-fold.”</p>



<p>This increase in feeding meets approximately 18-68% of a coral's metabolic demand, meaning that increased zooplankton intake significantly supports coral survivorship and persistence.</p>



<p>“The real intent of this project is to inject new technology and energy into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reef-sounds-the-melodic-key-to-coral-restoration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coral restoration</a> success,” Grottoli added. “It’s something that can be deployed strategically for high-value reefs or projects that have already had significant investment.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-coral-restoration">The future of coral restoration</h2>



<p>While the current generation of UZELA devices is handmade, the team is collaborating with an Ohio-based engineering company to make the technology more manufacturable. </p>



<p>Enhanced versions of the device are expected to be available within the next one to three years.</p>



<p>“We are not mitigating climate change fast enough to save coral, and UZELA is not going to instantly save coral reefs,” Grottoli noted. “But it is an exciting solution that will buy us time as we work toward a more sustainable environment.”</p>

How artificial light can boost coral reef recovery

<p>Australia is home to some of the world’s most unique and fragile wildlife. Among them is the Gilbert’s potoroo - a small, nocturnal marsupial that once seemed lost to history.</p>



<p>For over a century, scientists believed it had vanished, another victim of habitat destruction and introduced predators. That belief changed in 1994 when researchers made an astonishing discovery that would launch a decades-long conservation effort.</p>



<p>A new study has explored the journey of this critically endangered <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/otters-have-the-ability-to-restore-delicate-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> from its rediscovery to ongoing recovery initiatives.</p>



<p>Led by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (<a href="https://www.dbca.wa.gov.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DBCA</a>), in partnership with university researchers and <a href="https://www.potoroo.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Gilbert’s Potoroo Action Group</a>, the study provides insight into the challenges and successes of saving Australia’s rarest marsupial.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientists-thought-gilbert-s-potoroo-was-extinct">Scientists thought Gilbert’s potoroo was extinct</h2>



<p>Before its rediscovery, the Gilbert’s potoroo was known only from a few <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saving-earths-most-endangered-plants-from-extinction-proving-difficult-botanic-gardens/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preserved specimens</a> that were collected in the 19th century. Scientists assumed the species had disappeared, like so many others that cannot withstand the pressures of land clearing and introduced predators.</p>



<p>That changed in 1994 when Dr. Elizabeth Sinclair, then a Ph.D. student at <a href="https://www.uwa.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The University of Western Australia</a>, made a remarkable find. </p>



<p>While conducting research at Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve near Albany, she identified a population of Gilbert’s potoroos surviving in a small area of coastal heathland. The discovery astonished the scientific community and reignited hope that this marsupial could be saved.</p>



<p>Dr. Tony Friend, the study’s lead author, recalled the momentous nature of the find. "When we surveyed the rediscovered population, we found that only about 40 individuals remained in a small area of heathland on Mount Gardner."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unique-diet-of-the-gilbert-s-potoroo">Unique diet of the Gilbert’s potoroo</h2>



<p>Once scientists confirmed the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/are-we-failing-the-worlds-most-threatened-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a>’ existence, they had to learn how to protect it. They quickly discovered that the potoroo relies almost entirely on underground fungi for food, which is a diet unlike that of any other marsupial in Australia.</p>



<p>This dependency on a single food source made habitat conservation an urgent priority. Without a healthy ecosystem that supported the growth of these fungi, the species could not survive.</p>



<p>Predation by foxes and feral cats posed another significant threat. With such a small population, even a single predator could have devastating effects. Conservationists began working on strategies to keep the potoroo safe while ensuring its habitat remained intact.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-creating-insurance-populations">Creating insurance populations</h2>



<p>Recognizing the risk of keeping the entire <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marsupials-are-key-to-healthy-ecosystems-in-australia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">population</a> in one location, scientists took action. Between 2005 and 2014, they established two "insurance populations" in separate locations to safeguard the species against disasters. </p>



<p>One group was placed on Bald Island off Cheynes Beach, a predator-free sanctuary that provided a safe environment for the potoroo to breed. The second group was introduced into a specially designed enclosure in <a href="https://exploreparks.dbca.wa.gov.au/park/waychinicup-national-park" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Waychinicup National Park</a>, which also offered protection from predators.</p>



<p>These efforts proved crucial in 2015 when disaster struck the potoroo population at Two Peoples Bay. A catastrophic bushfire swept through the reserve, wiping out much of the original habitat.</p>



<p>Without the insurance populations, the species might have disappeared entirely. Scientists are now using individuals from these protected groups to reintroduce the potoroo back into its natural range.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-importance-of-genetic-diversity">Importance of genetic diversity</h2>



<p>A major challenge in conservation is maintaining genetic diversity, especially for species with extremely small populations. Dr. Sinclair, a co-author of the study, highlighted the importance of understanding the species’ genetic structure.</p>



<p>"Understanding the genetic makeup of the remaining Gilbert's potoroo populations is crucial for maintaining their long-term viability," she said.</p>



<p>By studying the genetics of the surviving potoroos, scientists can make informed decisions about breeding and relocation efforts. This knowledge helps prevent inbreeding and ensures the species remains resilient in the face of the current environmental changes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-addressing-climate-and-habitat-challenges">Addressing climate and habitat challenges</h2>



<p>Beyond genetics, other long-term challenges remain. Habitat destruction, climate change, and shifting environmental conditions continue to threaten the potoroo’s future. Effective fire management is now a top priority, as uncontrolled wildfires pose a major risk to the remaining <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-is-tracking-endangered-animal-habitats-from-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">populations</a>.</p>



<p>Predator control also remains essential. Foxes and feral cats, introduced to Australia by European settlers, are responsible for the decline of many native species, including the potoroo. </p>



<p>Conservationists are working on strategies to manage these threats while ensuring the potoroo’s habitat remains suitable for future generations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-community-involvement-in-conservation">Community involvement in conservation</h2>



<p>The fight to save the Gilbert’s potoroo extends beyond scientists and government agencies. Community involvement has played a vital role in the species’ survival. </p>



<p>The Gilbert’s Potoroo Action Group has been instrumental in raising awareness and securing funding for conservation efforts. Local volunteers contribute by monitoring populations, assisting with habitat restoration, and advocating for continued protection.</p>



<p>Public education also plays a significant role in conservation success. By teaching people about the importance of biodiversity and the threats facing native species, conservation groups hope to inspire long-term commitment to protecting Australia’s unique wildlife.</p>

<p>Dr. Friend remains optimistic about the future. "The regenerating habitat at Two Peoples Bay remains a valuable resource for future recovery efforts," he said.</p>



<p>The road ahead will not be easy, but the dedication of researchers, conservationists, and the wider community has given the potoroo a fighting chance. If efforts continue, this remarkable marsupial may yet avoid extinction and thrive once more in the wild.</p>

<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. <p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

Recent scientific discoveries are revolutionizing our understanding of this peculiar human behavior.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-discovery-in-the-brain">Breakthrough discovery in the brain</h2>

<p>"We found that global blockade of the rat periaqueductal gray with either muscimol or lidocaine interfered with ticklishness and play," the research team reported in their study.</p>

<p>What we call "tickling" is two completely different phenomena, according to the latest research. Light tickling – that feathery sensation that makes you want to scratch – is essentially your body's sophisticated bug detection system. This alerts you to potential insects or parasites on your skin.</p>



<p>Deep tickling – the kind that makes you laugh uncontrollably – involves complex brain circuits and is fundamentally social. You literally cannot tickle yourself with this type of stimulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-self-tickling-is-impossible">Why self-tickling is impossible</h2>



<p>Your cerebellum acts like a prediction machine, recent findings show. When you move your own hand to touch yourself, your brain generates precise predictions about what you will feel and then cancels out the tickling sensation through neural inhibition.</p>



<p>When someone else tickles you, your brain can't predict their movements, so the full tickling response activates. It's like your brain's way of distinguishing between self and others.</p>

<p>Individual differences in ticklishness depend on genetics, psychology, and even trust. Dr. Xinzhong Dong at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Johns Hopkins University</a> notes that people with denser nerve endings tend to be more sensitive.</p>

<p>Dr. Konstantina Kilteni's 2025 research, published in <em><a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adt0350" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Science Advances</a></em>, reveals another technique: place your hand on the tickler's hand. This allows your brain to partially predict the sensations, reducing the tickling response by up to 90 percent.</p>



<p>"Your brain is essentially learning to override its own reflexes," Kilteni explained in her review of tickling research.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolutionary-purpose-discovered">Evolutionary purpose discovered</h2>



<p>From an evolutionary perspective, tickling serves vital functions according to <a href="https://www.umd.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Maryland</a> researcher Dr. Robert Provine's extensive studies. It trains our defense reflexes for vulnerable body areas and facilitates social bonding between family members.</p>



<p>Tickling-induced laughter is actually one of the first forms of communication between infants and caregivers. "Tickle involves a neurological self/nonself discrimination, providing the most primitive social scenario," Provine noted in his research.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clinical-applications-emerge">Clinical applications emerge</h2>

<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
