<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>

Wasps shine a light on 'dark biodiversity' in rainforests

<p>Archaeologists in eastern Kazakhstan have identified a puzzling structure that has sparked curiosity across global research circles. The newly unearthed site, dating back 3,800 years, features a six-sided outline that researchers call a pyramid.</p>



<p>Experts suggest that the monument stands around 10 feet (3 meters) high, leading some to believe it served a special purpose in its day. It shows a geometric design that has never before been documented in this region.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracing-an-ancient-identity">Tracing an ancient identity</h2>



<p>Archaeologists from the <a href="https://www.enu.kz/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">L. N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University</a>, led by <a href="https://www.enu.kz/en/news/497" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ulan Umitkaliyev</a>, began exploring the <a href="https://arkeonews.net/tag/kyrykungir-complex-monument/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kyrykungir</a> site near Toktamys village in 2014. Their fieldwork exposed a labyrinth that appeared to guide visitors toward a central grave.</p>



<p>“The steppe pyramid is built with great precision; it is hexagonal. There are thirteen meters [43 feet] and eight rows of stones between each face,” said Umitkaliyev in an official statement shared across academic outlets.</p>



<p>Geometry held deep meaning for many Bronze Age societies across Asia. Builders often combined artistry and astronomy when planning large communal structures.</p>



<p>Certain groups in this area constructed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/solar-eclipse-may-have-changed-the-architecture-of-ancient-egypt-forever/">funerary monuments</a> with earthen mounds to signal respect for influential members. Some experts think these layers of soil might have also helped preserve delicate objects buried below.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-layers-of-culture-and-craftsmanship">Layers of culture and craftsmanship</h2>



<p>Researchers came across horse remains and elaborate ceramics, indicating that residents honored animals in their customs. A set of gold earrings was also recovered from the site, suggesting that metalwork had reached a high level of artistry here.</p>



<p>Experts link the site to the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1563011011000122" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Andronovo</a> communities, who thrived in parts of Central Asia from about 2000 to 900 BCE. They were known for domesticating horses and constructing stone structures that showed advanced skills.</p>



<p>One large outer wall of this hexagon was formed with megalithic stones, while the interior had multiple circles. No one is entirely sure if the entire space once had a roof or if it was left open to the elements.</p>



<p>It was reported that each of the six sides measures around 42 feet (13 meters) in length. The structure had an earthen covering at some point, though its current state shows plenty of exposure.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crucial-rare-earth-elements-discovered-coal-mines-united-states/">Items discovered</a> inside reflect the daily routines of a pastoral culture that relied on herding for survival. Bronze tools and ornaments suggest that trade networks provided essential metals and creative ideas.</p>



<p>Archaeological analysis indicates that animals were key symbols of community wealth in this region. Horse bones near the stone complexes reveal how these creatures supported transport and possibly ceremonial rites.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-a-wider-bronze-age-network">Evidence of a wider Bronze Age network</h2>



<p>Older monuments in this district reflect a cultural tapestry shaped by trade routes. Some experts believe these paths supported the spread of languages and belief systems along the <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/9781444360790.ch36" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">steppe</a> corridors.</p>



<p>Ancient travelers carried more than precious goods when they crossed these open grasslands. They moved ideas, craftsmanship skills, and diverse customs that shaped societies along this path.</p>



<p>Historical records show that domesticated horses changed mobility in these regions. Scholars argue that equine culture let communities establish contact across great distances, sparking developments in weaving, pottery, and metal smelting.</p>



<p>Those influences likely seeped into the design of the six-sided pyramid. Some shapes and wall markings might connect to broader rituals that flourished across multiple settlements.</p>



<p>Sociologists who study cross-cultural interactions see similarities in how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bronze-age-technology-is-a-modern-solution-for-clean-energy/">Bronze Age</a> societies valued communal gathering spaces. Meeting points often included altars or sanctuaries where leaders made pivotal decisions.</p>



<p>Excavations from Afghanistan to the Caspian Sea show parallel patterns in burial practices. Graves frequently included personal ornaments, tools, and remnants of feasting that marked the deceased’s social standing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-perspectives-on-pyramids">New perspectives on pyramids</h2>



<p>Investigations at this site continue to attract interest among historians, who look at ways that Bronze Age societies expressed status. Specialists also wonder if these stone ruins hold clues about alliances that linked distant clans.</p>



<p>Some point out that Bronze Age sites across Central Asia have often stayed in the background of global debates. They plan to compare architectural layouts from Kyrykungir with other monumental complexes in hopes of finding patterns.</p>



<p>Many remain fascinated by the puzzle of a hexagonal platform, which seems to have been the resting place of a privileged individual. Researchers hope to analyze further objects that may reveal how people combined <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-real-impact-of-burning-magic-herbs-in-spiritual-rituals/">spiritual beliefs</a> with decorative customs.</p>

<p>Think back to the vibrant coral reef ecosystems often depicted in cartoons during your childhood - thriving habitats teeming with fish, anemones, and other marine life. In reality, many of these reefs are now facing severe environmental stress and declining health. However, innovative solutions offer hope for their recovery. </p>



<p>One such advancement is the Underwater Zooplankton Enhancement Light Array (UZELA), a programmable, autonomous submersible light system developed by researchers to support coral reef ecosystems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-artificial-light-to-boost-coral-reefs">Artificial light to boost coral reefs</h2>



<p>UZELA is designed to attract zooplankton - microscopic aquatic organisms that serve as a crucial food source for corals - by emitting specific wavelengths of light. </p>



<p>By enhancing local <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/zooplankton-are-rapidly-escalating-the-threat-of-nanoplastics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">zooplankton</a> availability, this technology has the potential to bolster coral nutrition and resilience in the face of environmental challenges.</p>



<p>After a rigorous six-month testing period on two species of coral native to Hawaii, researchers found that UZELA significantly increased local zooplankton density and boosted the feeding rates of both healthy and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bleached-coral-reefs-recover-quickly-in-the-absence-of-human-influences/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bleached coral</a>. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reefs-on-the-brink-of-collapse">Reefs on the brink of collapse</h2>



<p>Providing corals with greater amounts of food makes them stronger and more likely to be resilient against certain environmental threats, such as heat stress and ocean acidification.</p>



<p><em>"</em>This result is particularly striking, especially as rising ocean temperatures are pushing entire coral reefs to the brink of collapse,<em>"</em> said Andrea Grottoli, lead author of the study and a professor of earth sciences at <a href="https://www.osu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Ohio State University</a>.</p>



<p>“Coral reefs house one-third of all marine species, yet occupy less than 1% of the ocean,” she added. “They are disproportionately responsible for ocean health, and we’re at risk of losing them.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-valuable-tool-for-coral-reef-restoration">Valuable tool for coral reef restoration </h2>



<p>Millions of people rely on coral reefs, as they support fishing industries and protect coastal communities from threats such as erosion and floods. </p>



<p>However, at the current rate of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-warming-is-accelerating-beyond-control-as-co2-levels-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global warming</a>, projections indicate that these vital coral reefs could face complete devastation by 2050, endangering the delicate ecosystems they sustain.</p>



<p>Although UZELA is only a short-term solution, Grottoli believes the artificial light system could be a valuable tool for coral restoration efforts.</p>



<p>“Think of it as a band-aid for about a couple decades,” Grottoli said. “It can protect some corals in some places, sometimes.”</p>



<p>The team also discovered that UZELA, which operates for six months on a single battery, optimizes coral feeding time by functioning for just one hour after sunset each day. </p>



<p>While artificial lights have the potential to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-impacting-marine-life-more-than-we-realized/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">disrupt marine life</a>, researchers emphasize that UZELA does not harm the environment or interfere with the movement of other zooplankton in the area.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-artificial-light-benefits-for-coral-reefs">Artificial light benefits for coral reefs</h2>



<p>“If you imagine zooplankton in a column floating above coral, instead of being naturally dispersed, UZELA is just pulling them down, but it’s not taking away from the coral beside it,” explained Grottoli. </p>



<p>“We show that if you put the coral close to the light, they benefit from that concentrated zooplankton, and feeding rates go up 10- to 50-fold.”</p>



<p>This increase in feeding meets approximately 18-68% of a coral's metabolic demand, meaning that increased zooplankton intake significantly supports coral survivorship and persistence.</p>



<p>“The real intent of this project is to inject new technology and energy into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reef-sounds-the-melodic-key-to-coral-restoration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coral restoration</a> success,” Grottoli added. “It’s something that can be deployed strategically for high-value reefs or projects that have already had significant investment.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-coral-restoration">The future of coral restoration</h2>



<p>While the current generation of UZELA devices is handmade, the team is collaborating with an Ohio-based engineering company to make the technology more manufacturable. </p>



<p>Enhanced versions of the device are expected to be available within the next one to three years.</p>



<p>“We are not mitigating climate change fast enough to save coral, and UZELA is not going to instantly save coral reefs,” Grottoli noted. “But it is an exciting solution that will buy us time as we work toward a more sustainable environment.”</p>

How artificial light can boost coral reef recovery

Think back to the vibrant coral reef ecosystems often depicted...

<p>Australia is home to some of the world’s most unique and fragile wildlife. Among them is the Gilbert’s potoroo - a small, nocturnal marsupial that once seemed lost to history.</p>



<p>For over a century, scientists believed it had vanished, another victim of habitat destruction and introduced predators. That belief changed in 1994 when researchers made an astonishing discovery that would launch a decades-long conservation effort.</p>



<p>A new study has explored the journey of this critically endangered <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/otters-have-the-ability-to-restore-delicate-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> from its rediscovery to ongoing recovery initiatives.</p>



<p>Led by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (<a href="https://www.dbca.wa.gov.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DBCA</a>), in partnership with university researchers and <a href="https://www.potoroo.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Gilbert’s Potoroo Action Group</a>, the study provides insight into the challenges and successes of saving Australia’s rarest marsupial.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientists-thought-gilbert-s-potoroo-was-extinct">Scientists thought Gilbert’s potoroo was extinct</h2>



<p>Before its rediscovery, the Gilbert’s potoroo was known only from a few <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saving-earths-most-endangered-plants-from-extinction-proving-difficult-botanic-gardens/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preserved specimens</a> that were collected in the 19th century. Scientists assumed the species had disappeared, like so many others that cannot withstand the pressures of land clearing and introduced predators.</p>



<p>That changed in 1994 when Dr. Elizabeth Sinclair, then a Ph.D. student at <a href="https://www.uwa.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The University of Western Australia</a>, made a remarkable find. </p>



<p>While conducting research at Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve near Albany, she identified a population of Gilbert’s potoroos surviving in a small area of coastal heathland. The discovery astonished the scientific community and reignited hope that this marsupial could be saved.</p>



<p>Dr. Tony Friend, the study’s lead author, recalled the momentous nature of the find. "When we surveyed the rediscovered population, we found that only about 40 individuals remained in a small area of heathland on Mount Gardner."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unique-diet-of-the-gilbert-s-potoroo">Unique diet of the Gilbert’s potoroo</h2>



<p>Once scientists confirmed the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/are-we-failing-the-worlds-most-threatened-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a>’ existence, they had to learn how to protect it. They quickly discovered that the potoroo relies almost entirely on underground fungi for food, which is a diet unlike that of any other marsupial in Australia.</p>



<p>This dependency on a single food source made habitat conservation an urgent priority. Without a healthy ecosystem that supported the growth of these fungi, the species could not survive.</p>



<p>Predation by foxes and feral cats posed another significant threat. With such a small population, even a single predator could have devastating effects. Conservationists began working on strategies to keep the potoroo safe while ensuring its habitat remained intact.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-creating-insurance-populations">Creating insurance populations</h2>



<p>Recognizing the risk of keeping the entire <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marsupials-are-key-to-healthy-ecosystems-in-australia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">population</a> in one location, scientists took action. Between 2005 and 2014, they established two "insurance populations" in separate locations to safeguard the species against disasters. </p>



<p>One group was placed on Bald Island off Cheynes Beach, a predator-free sanctuary that provided a safe environment for the potoroo to breed. The second group was introduced into a specially designed enclosure in <a href="https://exploreparks.dbca.wa.gov.au/park/waychinicup-national-park" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Waychinicup National Park</a>, which also offered protection from predators.</p>



<p>These efforts proved crucial in 2015 when disaster struck the potoroo population at Two Peoples Bay. A catastrophic bushfire swept through the reserve, wiping out much of the original habitat.</p>



<p>Without the insurance populations, the species might have disappeared entirely. Scientists are now using individuals from these protected groups to reintroduce the potoroo back into its natural range.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-importance-of-genetic-diversity">Importance of genetic diversity</h2>



<p>A major challenge in conservation is maintaining genetic diversity, especially for species with extremely small populations. Dr. Sinclair, a co-author of the study, highlighted the importance of understanding the species’ genetic structure.</p>



<p>"Understanding the genetic makeup of the remaining Gilbert's potoroo populations is crucial for maintaining their long-term viability," she said.</p>



<p>By studying the genetics of the surviving potoroos, scientists can make informed decisions about breeding and relocation efforts. This knowledge helps prevent inbreeding and ensures the species remains resilient in the face of the current environmental changes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-addressing-climate-and-habitat-challenges">Addressing climate and habitat challenges</h2>



<p>Beyond genetics, other long-term challenges remain. Habitat destruction, climate change, and shifting environmental conditions continue to threaten the potoroo’s future. Effective fire management is now a top priority, as uncontrolled wildfires pose a major risk to the remaining <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-is-tracking-endangered-animal-habitats-from-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">populations</a>.</p>



<p>Predator control also remains essential. Foxes and feral cats, introduced to Australia by European settlers, are responsible for the decline of many native species, including the potoroo. </p>



<p>Conservationists are working on strategies to manage these threats while ensuring the potoroo’s habitat remains suitable for future generations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-community-involvement-in-conservation">Community involvement in conservation</h2>

<p>Last month set a new record for the hottest January ever documented, surprising climate experts who had expected that a developing La Niña would finally start easing a prolonged bout of unusual heat.</p>



<p>According to the <a href="https://climate.copernicus.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Copernicus Climate Change Service</a>, January 2025 was 1.75°C warmer than in pre-industrial times, continuing a notable series of high-temperature records spanning 2023 and 2024. </p>



<p>Human-generated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenhouse-gas-emissions-reach-another-all-time-high/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greenhouse gas emissions</a> have largely driven this persistent warming trend.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-weaker-la-nina-than-anticipated">A weaker La Niña than anticipated</h2>



<p>Most climate scientists anticipated that the exceptional heat wave would lose momentum once an El Niño event - peaking in January 2024 - gave way to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/australian-bushfires-triggered-rare-multi-year-la-nina/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">La Niña</a>, which typically brings a temporary cooling effect.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Yet temperatures have remained at, or near, record-breaking levels, prompting discussion about additional factors that may be elevating global warmth beyond forecasts.</p>



<p>Researchers caution that even slight increments in global temperature magnify both the intensity and frequency of extreme weather phenomena such as heatwaves, severe rainfall, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/droughts-and-extreme-weather-events-are-escalating/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">drought</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-concerning-jump-in-january-heat">Concerning jump in January heat</h2>



<p>January exceeded the previous monthly record (set in January 2024) by 0.09°C, a margin that Copernicus climate scientist Julien Nicolas described as “sizeable” in the context of global temperature shifts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This is what makes it a bit of a surprise...you're not seeing this cooling effect, or temporary brake at least, on the global temperature that we were expecting to see,” said Nicolas.</p>



<p>Stefan Rahmstorf from the <a href="https://www.uni-potsdam.de/en/university-of-potsdam" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Potsdam</a> pointed out that this is the first time in recorded data that a La Niña phase has yielded temperatures higher than those during the preceding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/el-nino-event-may-push-earth-towards-its-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">El Niño</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This is of serious concern - over the past sixty years, all twenty five La Niña January's have been cooler than surrounding years,” said Rahmstorf.</p>



<p>This year’s La Niña is predicted to be mild, and Copernicus reported evidence that surface temperatures in parts of the equatorial Pacific may be slowing or stalling the expected move toward cooler conditions. Nicolas noted that the phenomenon could vanish entirely by March.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surpassing-the-paris-agreement-goal">Surpassing the Paris Agreement goal</h2>



<p>Last month, Copernicus announced that the average global temperature for 2023 and 2024 had, for the first time, surpassed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Though this does not confirm a permanent breach of the long-term Paris Agreement goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C, it does reveal that the threshold is being tested.</p>



<p>Overall, scientists do not anticipate 2025 to eclipse 2023 and 2024’s record-breaking heat; they predict it will probably rank as the third-warmest year.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Nonetheless, Copernicus plans to carefully track <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-warming-broke-records-for-450-straight-days/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean temperatures</a> in 2025 to learn more about the planet’s evolving climate conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-oceans-in-climate-change">The role of oceans in climate change</h2>



<p>Oceans function as a crucial moderator of Earth’s climate and a major carbon sink. Cooler sea waters are able to capture more heat from the air, thereby contributing to reduced atmospheric temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Cooler oceans also hold on to around 90 percent of the extra heat produced by the burning of fossil fuels.</p>



<p>“This heat is bound to resurface periodically,” Nicolas said. “I think that's also one of the questions - is this what has been happening over the past couple of years?”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-astonishing-heat-in-january">Astonishing heat in January</h2>



<p>Sea surface temperatures have reached notably high levels throughout 2023 and 2024; in January alone, they were the second warmest ever recorded. “That is the thing that is a little puzzling - why they remain so warm,” Nicolas added.</p>



<p>University College London climate researcher Bill McGuire described it as “astonishing and frankly terrifying” that January remained near record highs even after La Niña conditions emerged.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Meanwhile, Joel Hirschi from the UK’s <a href="https://noc.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Oceanography Center</a> advised restraint when interpreting only one month’s data, remarking that peaks had also been noted after past El Niño phases, even with La Niña underway.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-explanations-for-record-heat-nbsp">Explanations for record heat&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Scientists generally concur that the long-term rise in global temperatures is primarily caused by burning fossil fuels, though natural climate cycles can influence yearly temperature variations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Still, experts say that El Niño alone cannot explain what has transpired in the atmosphere and oceans, meaning other explanations are being explored.</p>



<p>One possibility is that the move toward cleaner shipping fuels that began in 2020 has accelerated warming by curtailing sulfur-based emissions that help form sunlight-reflecting clouds.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Another study, published in December, questioned whether fewer low-altitude clouds might be letting more heat reach Earth’s surface.</p>



<p>“These are avenues that must be taken seriously, and remain open,” said Robert Vautard, a top researcher with the UN’s <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hottest-earth-in-125-000-years">Hottest Earth in 125,000 years</h2>



<p>Copernicus harnesses billions of measurements from satellites, ships, planes, and weather stations to form its climate estimates.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Though the agency’s own records trace back to 1940, other climate data sources - like ice cores, tree rings, and coral skeletons - enable scientists to extrapolate findings from a much deeper past.</p>



<p>Based on that broader array of evidence, researchers believe that the current period could well be the hottest Earth has experienced for at least 125,000 years.</p>

'Astonishing' global temperatures in January 2025 surprised scientists

Last month set a new record for the hottest January...

<p>Last year, a study suggested that deposits of carbon dioxide ice and other carbon-bearing molecules on Uranus’s moon Ariel likely originated from internal chemical processes - possibly even from a subsurface ocean.</p>



<p>Now, new research provides insight into how these materials may have reached, or may still be reaching, the moon’s surface.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Led by <a href="https://www.jhuapl.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">APL</a> planetary geologist Chloe Beddingfield, the research points to medial grooves - trenches that cut through Ariel’s massive canyons - as the likely pathways for this movement.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mysteries-of-ariel-s-interior-nbsp">Mysteries of Ariel’s interior&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The findings indicate that these medial grooves function similarly to spreading centers on Earth, where new <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/uranus-moon-ariel-may-have-a-hidden-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">oceanic crust</a> forms as internal material rises to the surface.</p>



<p>“If we're right, these medial grooves are probably the best candidates for sourcing those carbon oxide deposits and uncovering more details about the moon's interior,” Beddingfield said. “No other surface features show evidence of facilitating the movement of materials from inside Ariel, making this finding particularly exciting.”</p>



<p>Ariel’s grooves are among the youngest known features on its surface. Scientists have long debated whether they formed through fissures caused by tectonic forces or through volcanic activity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team analyzed images captured by NASA’s Voyager 2 - the only spacecraft to have flown past <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stunning-photo-of-uranus-and-its-rings-and-moons-captured-by-the-webb-telescope/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Uranus</a> and its moons - and concluded that these features more closely resemble spreading centers rather than volcanic conduits.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-spreading-center-theory">The spreading center theory</h2>



<p>One key piece of evidence comes from the way the canyon walls on either side of the medial grooves align. When the central canyon floors are digitally removed, the walls fit together like puzzle pieces, suggesting they were once joined before being pulled apart.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Additionally, the canyon floors feature regularly spaced ridges that resemble excavation tracks - patterns consistent with successive depositions of material, a hallmark of spreading centers.</p>



<p>Beddingfield explained that spreading centers arise from convection cells beneath the crust. As heat from Ariel’s interior pushes material upward, the surface cracks open, spreading apart as new material emerges and gradually cools.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-influence-of-tidal-forces-nbsp">The influence of tidal forces&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Ariel, along with several other Uranian moons, has undergone multiple periods of geological activity, likely due to tidal forces.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These forces arise from orbital resonances - precise ratios in the orbital periods of moons that generate repeated gravitational interactions. The interactions create cycles of internal heating, potentially melting parts of the icy interior and then refreezing them over time.</p>



<p>“It’s a fascinating situation - how this cycle affects these moons, their evolution, and their characteristics,” Beddingfield said.</p>



<p>Some scientists believe that these resonances could have helped maintain subsurface oceans beneath Ariel and its smaller neighboring moon, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/miranda-uranus-moon-may-have-hidden-ocean-possibly-extraterrestrial-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Miranda</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A recent 2024 <a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.3847/PSJ/ad77d7" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a>, co-authored by APL’s Tom Nordheim, proposed that such tidal forces might have created an ocean within Miranda’s interior - one that could still exist today.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ariel-s-internal-structure">Ariel’s<strong> </strong>internal structure</h2>



<p>Ariel’s medial grooves could provide important clues about the moon’s internal structure, particularly regarding the presence of an ocean.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Nordheim noted that carbon-bearing compounds do not last long on planetary surfaces due to space weathering, suggesting that these materials must have been deposited relatively recently.</p>



<p>“These new results suggest a possible mechanism for emplacing fresh material and short-lived compounds, including carbon monoxide and perhaps ammonia-bearing species on the surface,” Nordheim said.</p>



<p>However, Beddingfield cautioned against making direct connections between Ariel’s possible ocean and the medial grooves.</p>



<p>“The size of Ariel’s possible ocean and its depth beneath the surface can only be estimated, but it may be too isolated to interact with spreading centers,” she explained.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“There’s just a lot we don’t know. And while <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-carbon-ices-discovered-objects-beyond-neptune-kuiper-belt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon oxide ices</a> are present on Ariel’s surface, it’s still unclear whether they’re associated with the grooves because Voyager 2 didn’t have instruments that could map the distribution of ices.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-exploration-of-uranus">Future exploration of Uranus</h2>



<p>Study co-author Richard Cartwright emphasized that further exploration is necessary to confirm the role of these medial grooves in transporting material from Ariel’s interior.</p>



<p>“We need an orbiter that can make close passes of Ariel, map its medial grooves in detail, and analyze their spectral signatures for components like carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide,” said Cartwright.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“If carbon-bearing molecules are concentrated along these grooves, then it would strongly support the idea that they’re windows into Ariel’s interior.”</p>



<p>With Uranus gaining attention as a priority for future space exploration, Ariel and its enigmatic grooves may soon receive closer scrutiny. These investigations could unlock critical insights into the moon’s geological past - and potentially even into ongoing internal activity today.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The study, published in the <em>Creativity Research Journal</em>, confirms that AI lacks original thought and depends entirely on human prompts to generate meaningful content.</p>



<p>This insight has significant implications for the future of work, education, and job security. While AI can assist in creative fields, it does not replace the need for human imagination and decision-making. </p>

<p>"The future of work suggests that machines - AI, automation, and robots - will take over routine, algorithmic, predictable tasks, freeing up people to focus on unpredictable, non-algorithmic, and creative work," said Professor Cropley.</p>



<p>"However, if AI is capable of creativity, then this premise breaks down, and the future of work for humans is far less certain."</p>



<p>His research explores how AI and humans interact, emphasizing that AI is not a replacement for human creativity but a tool that enhances it.</p>



<p>"It's easy to understand through an example: if I prompt an AI art program like DALL-E 2 to 'produce an oil painting in the style of da Vinci's Mona Lisa, showing a young woman scrolling through her mobile phone and looking bored,' it will create a picture, and does a good job of satisfying that prompt," said Professor Cropley.</p>



<p>"But this does not mean that the AI is creative. Yes, the resulting picture is novel and effective, but it's not because AI had any special ability, but because I produced a creative prompt. The only thing the AI really did was save me the trouble of learning how to paint."</p>



<p>This example highlights AI’s dependence on human guidance. While the technology can generate impressive results, it does not originate creative ideas on its own. Instead, it follows instructions and processes data based on patterns learned from human-generated content.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-adoption-in-the-workplace">AI adoption in the workplace</h2>

<p>"A few years back there were wild claims that AI was truly creative and could rival the best human skills. But we're starting to see a more moderate and reasoned point of view," said Dr. Marrone.</p>



<p>She acknowledges AI’s strengths but also points out its limitations. While AI excels at processing large amounts of data quickly, it does not have independent thought or emotions. This distinction is crucial in fields that require innovation, intuition, and complex problem-solving.</p>



<p>"AI's strengths lie in speeding up information-gathering and evaluating ideas based on predefined criteria. It swiftly handles routine and data-intensive tasks, and this lets people engage more deeply with creative processes," noted Dr. Marrone.</p>



<p>"There's no doubt that generative AI is very impressive, but whatever you generate - and the key word here is 'you'- it's dependent on what you tell the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-does-creativity-start-in-the-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI</a> to deliver."</p>



<p>"AI does not operate independently; it's literally prompted by a person, and we need to remember that."</p>



<p>Her statement reinforces the idea that AI should be seen as a tool, not a replacement for human expertise. While it can enhance productivity and efficiency, it still requires human guidance to produce meaningful and valuable outcomes.</p>

<p>Urban areas face rising temperatures and shrinking green spaces. Cities replace natural landscapes with concrete, making heat waves more intense. Wildlife struggles to find habitats, leading to biodiversity loss. </p>



<p>In response, architects and ecologists explore solutions to make cities more livable. Green walls have emerged as a promising option.</p>



<p>These plant-covered facades do more than make buildings look better. They help cool urban areas and provide essential habitats for birds, insects, and other organisms.</p>



<p>A recent study led by Utrecht University ecologist Katharina Hecht provides scientific evidence of these benefits. The research compares green walls with bare <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chinas-great-green-wall-has-reached-a-new-milestone/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">walls</a> and natural cliffs, shedding light on their ecological value.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insights-into-green-walls">Insights into green walls</h2>



<p>The study, published in the journal <em>Building and Environment</em>, highlights the impact of green walls on urban cooling and biodiversity.</p>



<p>Hecht and her team worked with researchers from Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University and the Singapore-based company bioSEA. Together, they examined 20 green walls in Singapore’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fighting-coastal-erosion-electricity-turns-sand-into-a-sea-wall/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">urban environment</a>.</p>



<p>"Green walls can be much more than just a decorative trend," said Hecht. Many construction companies and policymakers promote them, but solid scientific evidence has been lacking.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cooling-effects-in-cities">Cooling effects in cities</h2>



<p>One of the study’s key findings is the ability of these walls to reduce temperatures. The researchers measured a cooling effect of up to 0.6–0.7 degrees Celsius between the front and back sides of these walls.</p>



<p>"This might sound like a small difference. But in the context of urban heat, even small reductions can lower energy costs and make buildings more comfortable to live and work in," said Hecht.</p>



<p>With increasing numbers of green walls, this cooling effect could help combat the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predicting-how-climate-change-will-alter-plant-growth-cycles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">urban</a> heat island phenomenon.</p>



<p>Urban heat islands occur when cities absorb and retain heat, making them significantly warmer than surrounding rural areas. Green walls provide shade, reduce heat absorption, and improve thermal comfort in dense urban settings.</p>



<p>They also contribute to climate resilience by lowering reliance on air conditioning, reducing energy consumption.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-supporting-urban-biodiversity-with-green-walls">Supporting urban biodiversity with green walls</h2>



<p>Beyond cooling, green walls also enhance urban biodiversity. The researchers found that plant-covered <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-purposefully-move-alter-growth-direction-to-help-their-neighbors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">facades</a> hosted over 100 animal species, including insects, spiders, and birds. This is a stark contrast to non-vegetated walls, which support only a handful of species.</p>



<p>The study also compared green walls to natural cliffs to assess their effectiveness in replicating natural habitats. Natural cliffs, unsurprisingly, supported slightly more biodiversity. However, green walls still provided valuable shelter for many species.</p>



<p>"This shows that we can learn from nature’s design strategies to enhance man-made green walls," said Hecht. "They provide valuable habitats in places that would otherwise be inhospitable for many species."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-surrounding-greenery">Role of surrounding greenery</h2>



<p>Hecht noted that plant-covered walls alone cannot maximize their ecological potential. The surrounding environment plays a crucial role in their effectiveness.</p>



<p>"What I found really interesting to confirm in our study is how important trees and other vegetation are," she said.</p>



<p>"The crowns of nearby trees and patches of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-defy-climate-change-through-acclimation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greenery</a> serve as stepping stones. They allow bees, bugs, and even small birds to hop from tree to tree, and eventually reach the green walls."</p>



<p>Without a network of trees and vegetation, green walls may struggle to attract diverse species. Isolated green walls offer limited benefits compared to those integrated into larger green corridors. Urban planners and architects must consider the broader ecological landscape when designing green spaces.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-applications-beyond-the-tropics">Applications beyond the tropics</h2>



<p>Although the study focused on Singapore’s tropical climate, Hecht believes the findings apply to temperate regions as well. She noted that the principles of green wall design remain consistent across different climates.</p>



<p>"The principles would be similar," said Hecht. "Although we would need to tailor the plant species and specific designs to the local biodiversity and weather conditions."</p>



<p>In temperate regions, green walls may naturally be colonized by mosses, perennials, and local climbers. These plants could influence the types of species that thrive. Architects and ecologists must adapt their designs to match local climate conditions while preserving the ecological benefits of green walls.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-expanding-research-on-green-walls">Expanding research on green walls</h2>



<p>The study highlights the need for more research on green walls, particularly in temperate regions. </p>



<p>Earlier studies in the Netherlands, conducted by students from Utrecht University, have shown promising results. However, Hecht emphasizes that more empirical data is necessary to confirm the long-term benefits of green walls in different climates.</p>



<p>She is already leading a follow-up project under Utrecht University’s "Pathways to Sustainability" program. Her team is developing a digital system to collect and compare data on green walls from different locations. </p>



<p>By analyzing data from multiple climates, the researchers aim to refine plant-covered wall designs and maximize their ecological potential.</p>

<p>Honey bees play a vital role in pollination, supporting food production and maintaining biodiversity. However, their populations have been declining due to multiple threats, including habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change. Among these dangers, one menace stands out - Varroa destructor mites.</p>



<p>These parasites latch onto honey <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/good-nutrition-is-key-to-honey-bee-survival/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bee</a> larvae, weakening entire colonies and leading to their collapse. Beekeepers have long battled these mites using various treatments, but a new study reveals that improper timing of these treatments could be causing more harm than good.</p>



<p>Researchers at the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Exeter</a> found that many beekeepers are not following recommended treatment schedules. As a result, their hives suffer higher losses than necessary.</p>



<p>The findings suggest that improving adherence to treatment guidelines could make a significant difference in bee survival rates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-varroa-mites-are-killing-bees">Varroa mites are killing bees</h2>



<p>The study analyzed data from 4,339 beekeepers across 37 counties in England and Wales. Using information from the National Bee Unit’s <a href="https://www.nationalbeeunit.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BeeBase</a>, the researchers examined 18,700 colonies between 2016 and 2020.</p>



<p>By tracking Varroa mite treatments, they found that the type of treatment used was important, but its timing played an even greater role in determining colony survival. Delayed or premature applications led to a higher rate of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/winter-poses-a-challenge-to-the-survival-of-honey-bees/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hive</a> losses, regardless of the treatment method.</p>



<p>"The main finding here was that a major cause of honeybee mortality could, in theory, be quite easy to reduce," said Dr. Thomas O'Shea-Wheller, lead author of the study from the University of Exeter.</p>



<p>The research challenges the assumption that the main threats to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/honey-bee-colonies-are-collapsing-as-climate-change-progresses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">honey bees</a> come from new diseases or environmental changes. Instead, it points to an overlooked but controllable factor - adherence to treatment schedules.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breaking-the-reproductive-cycle">Breaking the reproductive cycle</h2>



<p>Mite populations increase rapidly throughout the beekeeping season, growing in an exponential pattern. This makes it essential for beekeepers to apply treatments at the correct moments to break the reproductive cycle of the mites.</p>



<p>"Although beekeepers are frequently treating for Varroa, a considerable proportion are missing key time points and thus experiencing higher losses than expected," said Dr. O'Shea-Wheller.</p>



<p>A common mistake among beekeepers is applying treatment too early or too late in the season. If treatment occurs too soon, it may not fully eliminate the mites, allowing them to rebound before the season ends. </p>



<p>If applied too late, the mites will have already caused significant damage to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-honey-bee-day-protecting-our-vital-pollinators/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">colony</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-untimely-treatment-leads-to-more-bee-deaths">Untimely treatment leads to more bee deaths</h2>



<p>Varroa mites weaken honey bees by feeding on their bodily fluids, which reduces their ability to fight infections and diseases. As the mite population grows unchecked, the hive becomes more vulnerable to collapse.</p>



<p>"If you miss these, and apply a treatment too early or too late, then it will fail to properly suppress the mite population and growth will continue unchecked," said Dr. O'Shea-Wheller. </p>



<p>"Missing the recommended treatment window is, I think, the largest cause of poor prognostic outcomes and associated colony mortality."</p>



<p>This mistiming does not just impact individual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/organic-farming-and-flower-strips-improve-honey-bee-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hives</a>. The spread of Varroa mites from poorly treated colonies can affect neighboring hives, creating a wider problem for beekeeping communities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-growing-threat-of-resistance">Growing threat of resistance</h2>



<p>Beyond colony losses, inconsistent treatment schedules also contribute to another serious issue - the rise of resistant Varroa mites. Similar to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, mites that survive mistimed or improperly applied treatments become more resistant to future applications.</p>



<p>"Varroa has been the primary cause of honey bee mortality for some years, and it seems that we're in a sort of arms race as the mites become increasingly resistant to acaricides," said Dr. O'Shea-Wheller. </p>



<p>"Like with antibiotics, it's important to use Varroa treatments precisely as directed, because mistiming, overdosing, or underdosing can all increase the chances of the mites developing resistance."</p>



<p>This resistance forces beekeepers to rely on stronger or alternative treatments, which may not always be effective. If resistance continues to spread, managing Varroa mites will become even more challenging in the future.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-simple-yet-effective-solution">A simple yet effective solution</h2>



<p>The research suggests that improving adherence to treatment guidelines could significantly reduce <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bees-build-symmetrical-nests-not-for-beauty-but-for-survival/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">colony</a> losses. </p>



<p>Unlike other threats to honey bees, such as climate change or habitat destruction, this is a problem that can be addressed immediately.</p>



<p>By ensuring that treatments are applied at the right time, beekeepers can not only protect their own hives but also help slow the spread of resistant mites. This change requires greater awareness, education, and commitment from beekeepers to follow best practices.</p>

<p>Often thought of as frozen rivers, the vast ice streams of Greenland and Antarctica serve a pivotal role in our climate system. Like sluggish streams of frosty honey, they ferry ice from the heartland sheets to the seas.</p>



<p>The steady movement of ice streams has long been considered predictable, with models assuming a continuous and gradual flow.</p>



<p>However, new findings suggest that beneath their seemingly smooth surface, these icy giants behave in ways that are more complex than we imagined.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-ice-movement">Rethinking ice movement</h2>



<p>Previously, scientists used computer simulations to estimate how ice streams could impact sea-level rise.</p>



<p>These simulations have always been underpinned by a simple concept: the ice steadily and slowly flows into the sea. </p>



<p>But satellite measurements have painted a different picture, revealing noticeable shortfalls in these simulations, leading to inaccurate results in how much ice is being lost, and consequently blurring our projections on sea-level rise.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-behavior-of-ice-streams">Behavior of ice streams </h2>



<p>A team of researchers at <a href="https://ethz.ch/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ETH Zurich</a>, led by Professor Andreas Fichtner, has discovered a startling fact about the behavior of ice streams.</p>



<p>Hidden deep in the icy belly of these streams, countless weak quakes are constantly unfolding, triggering each other and extending over hundreds of meters. </p>



<p>“The assumption that ice streams only flow like viscous honey is no longer tenable. They also move with a constant stick-slip motion,” said Fichtner.</p>



<p>As these findings are integrated into future simulations, experts may be able to better predict sea-level changes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-mystery-of-fault-planes">The mystery of fault planes </h2>



<p>Interestingly, the discovery also resolves a longstanding puzzle about fault planes found between ice crystals in deep ice cores. These fault lines, the fallout from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/diamond-fountain-eruption-from-volcanoes-when-earth-continents-shift/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tectonic shifts</a>, have puzzled scientists for years.</p>



<p>“The fact that we’ve now discovered these ice quakes is a key step towards gaining a better understanding of the deformation of ice streams on small scales,” noted study co-author Olaf Eisen, a professor at the Alfred Wegener Institute.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-volcanic-twist">A volcanic twist</h2>



<p>These ice quakes have remained unnoticed due to a layer of volcanic particles, situated 900 meters under the ice surface. </p>



<p>The volcanic particles - traced back to a massive eruption of Mount Mazama about 7,700 years ago - block the quakes from reaching the surface.</p>



<p>Fichtner also pointed out that the ice quakes start from impurities in the ice, which are actually remnant sulphates from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/underwater-volcanic-eruptions-are-more-harmful-than-previously-believed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">volcanic eruptions</a>, thus highlighting an unexpected connection between volcanic eruptions and ice stream dynamics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revealing-hidden-seismic-activity">Revealing hidden seismic activity</h2>



<p>The experts unraveled the mystery of ice quakes using a fiber-optic cable inserted into a 2,700-meter borehole, recording seismic data from within a massive ice stream. They used a borehole drilled for the East Greenland Ice-core Project.</p>



<p>The team dropped a fiber-optic cable deep into the borehole, capturing data from within the ice stream continuously over a 14-hour period.</p>



<p>The prospect of ice quakes is not just limited to the data site. Fichtner believes that they likely occur in ice streams globally. <p>An Australian team of astronomers has created a specialized way to sift through radio signals in space, looking to identify their sources. The experts studied bright flashes of energy that appear suddenly and then vanish almost as quickly.</p>



<p>The research was led by Dr. Andy Wang from the Curtin University node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy <a href="https://www.icrar.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">(ICRAR)</a>. He and his collaborators tested a system that can pick out rare signals in the middle of enormous data streams.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-fast-radio-flashes">Tracking fast radio flashes</h2>



<p>Scientists often refer to these bursts as <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.1147532" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fast radio bursts</a>, which are intense radio waves that can release as much energy in a moment as the Sun does in a day. <p>Experts have been <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mysterious-x-ray-flashes-are-accelerating-in-a-black-hole/">studying these flashes</a> since they were first reported in 2007, yet they keep surprising us with odd variations.</p>



<p>The new CRACO system of analysis helped the team detect two of these quick radio signals in their pilot run. The system also identified two sporadically-emitting <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/universe/neutron-stars-are-weird/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">neutron stars</a>, which are smaller cores left behind when massive stars burn out.</p>



<p>This fresh approach helped the researchers refine the positions of four <a href="https://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/science/objects/neutron_stars1.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pulsars</a>, which are rotating stellar remnants that broadcast beams of energy at timed intervals.</p>



<p>The experts also detected more than 20 additional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fast-radio-bursts-are-even-more-mysterious-than-we-thought/">fast radio bursts</a> afterward, which was an unexpected bonus.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-new-approach-with-craco">A new approach with CRACO</h2>



<p><a href="https://astronomy.curtin.edu.au/research/craft/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CRACO</a> involves a collection of powerful computers and accelerators. The system analyzes trillions of pixels of information received by telescopes linked to the <a href="https://www.csiro.au/en/about/facilities-collections/atnf/askap-radio-telescope" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ASKAP radio telescope</a> at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation <a href="https://www.csiro.au/en/research/technology-space/astronomy-space?start=0&amp;count=12" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">(CSIRO)</a>.</p>



<p>ASKAP is an array of antennas in Western Australia that scans wide areas of the sky to catch radio signals.</p>



<p>“CRACO is enabling us to find these bursts better than ever before. We have been searching for bursts 100 times per second and in the future we expect this will increase to 1,000 times per second,” noted Dr. Wang. He expressed excitement about covering such vast swaths of data in real time.</p>



<p>CRACO looks at the sky in short, frequent snapshots. It filters out unnecessary noise and flags anything that might be a sudden spike in radio waves.</p>



<p>“That’s the equivalent of sifting through a whole beach of sand to look for a single five-cent coin every minute,” said Dr. Keith Bannister, the CSIRO astronomer and engineer who helped build the instrument. The speed of scanning reaches 100 billion pixels per second.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-period-radio-transients">Long-period radio transients</h2>



<p>These bursts are not the only things drawing attention. The researchers also noticed long-period transients, which stay lit up for longer stretches compared to the super-fast flashes.</p>



<p>They appear to be unusual objects within our own galaxy, though they remain puzzling. Dr. Wang and his colleagues hope to gather more clues about their nature as CRACO expands its range.</p>



<p>Some transients turn off and on at unpredictable intervals. This irregular behavior makes them tricky to spot without a system that can constantly watch for changes.</p>

<p>Knowing where radio signals come from in the sky helps experts figure out if they originate in distant galaxies or close by. Each burst or transient could reveal details about the environment that produced it.</p>



<p>Scientists believe that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/glitching-star-explains-cosmic-radio-bursts/">fast radio bursts</a> could travel across billions of light-years, carrying signs of how matter is distributed in that path. This might help map cosmic structures that are otherwise invisible.</p>



<p>When a burst’s location is pinned down, astronomers can compare that spot to optical data. If they locate a galaxy there, it hints at possible processes feeding the bursts.</p>

<p>CRACO will soon be offered as part of the <a href="https://www.atnf.csiro.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Australia Telescope National Facility</a>, managed by CSIRO. This opens it up globally to scientists who want to hunt for fast radio bursts and other odd signals.</p>



<p>“Once at full capacity, CRACO will be a game changer for international astronomy,” said Dr. Wang. He believes the technology will find more objects out in space that defy expectations.</p>



<p>ASKAP itself is part of a wave of next-generation tools that collect vast amounts of data. Innovations like CRACO will handle the load, scanning the input swiftly and tagging unusual patterns.</p>



<p>Researchers want to tune CRACO’s speed so it can scan 1,000 times each second. That pace could reveal bursts that are too short or rare to catch using older methods.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-lies-ahead">What lies ahead</h2>



<p>The next steps involve adopting more advanced <a href="https://arxiv.org/html/2501.16770v1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">radio astronomy</a> engineering. These improvements might capture bursts that flicker and vanish in less than 10 milliseconds.</p>



<p>Each detection is a chance to learn something new about the cosmos. CRACO’s quick response system can notify astronomers right away, who can then steer other telescopes toward that target.</p>



<p>Scientists hope this technology will guide them to new puzzles about star formations, neutron stars, or even black hole activity. Any new object that flickers in radio waves might be part of this expanding list.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
