<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>

<p>Fear shapes human behavior in profound ways, influencing our reactions and survival responses. While some fears are innate, others can be unlearned through experience, a process that has long intrigued neuroscientists. </p>



<p>Now, researchers have identified a crucial brain pathway that helps suppress fear, and sheds new light on how we adapt to perceived threats.</p>



<p>The findings could pave the way for innovative treatments for fear-related disorders such as phobias, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).</p>



<p>The study, conducted by scientists at the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre (<a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/gatsby/about/sainsbury-wellcome-centre" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SWC</a>) at UCL, unravels the neural mechanisms behind fear suppression, and offers a fresh perspective on the role of learning, memory, and emotional regulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-brain-helps-us-unlearn-fear">The brain helps us unlearn fear</h2>



<p>Led by Dr. Sara Mederos and Professor Sonja Hofer, the research team investigated how we unlearn fear.</p>



<p>"Humans are born with instinctive fear reactions, such as responses to loud noises or fast-approaching objects," said Dr. Mederos.</p>



<p>"However, we can override these instinctive responses through experience - like children learning to enjoy fireworks rather than fear their loud bangs. We wanted to understand the brain mechanisms that underlie such forms of learning."</p>



<p>The researchers employed a novel experimental approach using mice. They observed that when presented with a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/primal-instincts-kick-in-when-a-threat-appears-too-close/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">perceived threat</a> - an overhead expanding shadow that mimicked an aerial predator - the mice initially sought shelter.</p>



<p>Over time, however, they learned to remain calm, giving the researchers a model for studying how we suppress our fear responses.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decoding-the-brain-s-fear-pathway">Decoding the brain's fear pathway</h2>



<p>Expanding on their previous findings, the team studied the ventrolateral geniculate nucleus (vLGN), a brain region that can suppress fear responses when active. They also explored its role in tracking past experiences of threats.</p>



<p>Two significant findings emerged. First, particular regions of the visual cortex were essential for learning. Second, the vLGN stored the memories that were formed during this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/zombie-neurons-shed-new-light-on-learning/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">learning process</a>.</p>



<p>“We found that animals failed to learn to suppress their fear responses when specific cortical visual areas were inactivated. However, once the animals had already learned to stop escaping, the cerebral cortex was no longer necessary,” explained Dr. Mederos.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-perspective-on-learning-and-memory">New perspective on learning and memory</h2>



<p>These discoveries challenge conventional beliefs about learning and memory. </p>



<p>"While the cerebral cortex has long been considered the brain's primary center for learning, memory and behavioral flexibility, we found the subcortical vLGN, and not the visual cortex, actually stores these crucial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-reboots-the-brain-making-room-for-new-memories/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">memories</a>," said Professor Hofer.</p>



<p>"This neural pathway can provide a link between cognitive neocortical processes and ‘hard-wired’ brainstem-mediated behaviors, enabling animals to adapt instinctive behaviors.”</p>



<p>The team also revealed the cellular and molecular mechanisms behind this process. Learning occurs through increased neural activity in certain vLGN neurons, and is prompted by the release of endocannabinoids, which are known to regulate mood and memory. </p>



<p>This leads to heightened activity in this brain area when encountering a visual threat, thereby suppressing fear responses.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-and-future-directions">Implications and future directions</h2>



<p>The value of these findings could reach far beyond the laboratory. </p>



<p>"Our findings could also help advance our understanding of what is going wrong in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-human-brain-decides-which-memories-to-remember/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain</a> when fear response regulation is impaired in conditions such as phobias, anxiety and PTSD," said Professor Hofer.</p>



<p>"While instinctive fear reactions to predators may be less relevant for modern humans, the brain pathway we discovered exists in humans too."</p>



<p>Next, the team will collaborate with clinical researchers to further explore these brain circuits in humans. The goal is to create new, targeted treatments for maladaptive fear responses and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breakthrough-discovery-social-anxiety-can-be-targeted-in-the-gut/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">anxiety</a> disorders. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bridging-research-and-treatment">Bridging research and treatment</h2>



<p>The discovery of this fear-regulating brain pathway could have profound implications for mental health treatment. </p>



<p>By understanding how the brain suppresses instinctive fear responses, researchers may be able to develop new therapies for individuals struggling with fear-based disorders.</p>



<p>Traditional treatments, such as exposure therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy, rely on retraining the brain to respond differently to fear-inducing stimuli. </p>



<p>However, targeting the vLGN directly could offer a more precise approach that leads to faster and more effective treatments.</p>



<p>As scientists continue to map the brain’s intricate fear circuitry, the hope is that these insights will translate into breakthroughs in mental health care, offering relief to millions affected by excessive or maladaptive fear responses.</p>

Google claims commercial quantum computing is just five years away

Quantum computing has moved from academic circles to everyday tech...

<p>An rare discovery in northern Luxembourg has given historians a fresh glimpse into the final years of the Western Roman Empire. Archaeologists have uncovered a hoard of gold coins dating back to the late fourth and early fifth centuries, buried near the village of Holzthum.</p>



<p>The find includes coins with depictions of nine different emperors, but three coins stand out - each bearing the face of <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Eugenius-Bulgaris" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Eugenius</a>, a little-known ruler whose brief reign ended in bloodshed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-surprising-start">A surprising start</h2>



<p>The excavation began in 2019 after metal detectorists stumbled upon a single gold coin. The <a href="https://guichet.public.lu/en/citoyens/organismes/organismes_citoyens/inra.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Institute for Archaeological Research</a> in Luxembourg soon launched an official investigation, which led to a four-year dig.</p>



<p>The site, however, was dangerous. Unexploded ordnance from World War II littered the ground, requiring archaeologists to work with Luxembourg’s <a href="https://today.rtl.lu/news/luxembourg/a/1182428.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Army Bomb Disposal Service</a>. Each step was taken carefully to ensure both safety and preservation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-hidden-wealth-of-rome">The hidden wealth of Rome</h2>



<p>“This represents a huge amount of personal wealth for the individual or group who collected these coins,” said historian <a href="https://www.tcd.ie/classics/people/rebecca-usherwood.php" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rebecca Usherwood</a> of <a href="https://www.tcd.ie/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Trinity College Dublin</a>. In ancient times, gold coins were not everyday currency. Most citizens would never have held a single solidus, let alone an entire hoard.</p>



<p>Each coin is a <a href="https://www.fellows.co.uk/blog/monies-medals-militaria/2024/10/24/solidus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solidus</a>, a high-value Roman gold piece first introduced in the fourth century. Solidi were essential for trade, military payments, and political agreements, and they served as both currency and propaganda.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-emperor-no-one-remembers">The emperor no one remembers</h2>



<p>Among the coins, three bear the image of Eugenius, a short-lived emperor who ruled the Western Roman Empire from 392 to 394 AD. “His coins are especially rare because his time in power was so short,” explained historian <a href="https://lda-lsa.academia.edu/MPileki%C4%87" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Marjanko Pilekić</a>.</p>



<p>Eugenius was an unusual choice for emperor, having started his career as a professor of rhetoric. He was installed as a ruler by military leaders after the suspicious death of <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Valentinian-II" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Valentinian II</a>, but his reign was never recognized by the Eastern Roman emperor <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Theodosius-I" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Theodosius I</a>.</p>



<p>A violent battle followed. In 394 AD, Theodosius I crushed Eugenius’ forces at the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Battle-of-Frigidus-River" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Battle of Frigidus</a>, which led to the execution of Eugenius. With his defeat, the Western Roman Empire fell further under the control of the East.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-bury-the-coins">Why bury the coins?</h2>



<p>The presence of these coins in Luxembourg raises new questions. Some researchers believe they were hidden during a time of crisis. </p>



<p>In the late fourth century, Rome’s hold over its territories was crumbling, and invasions from <a href="https://global.oup.com/academic/product/the-fall-of-the-roman-empire-9780195325416" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Germanic tribes</a> made many areas unsafe.</p>



<p>“It’s likely they died before they could recover their treasure,” said Usherwood, suggesting that whoever buried the hoard may have been fleeing or caught in battle. </p>



<p>Similar hidden stashes from this period have been found across Europe, often linked to political instability and war.</p>

<p>This approach enabled them to track how HARs interact with genes in human and chimpanzee <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-discover-the-speed-at-which-the-brain-processes-information/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">neural</a> stem cells. </p>



<p>As a result, they were able to identify gene targets for almost 90% of all HARs—a significant breakthrough in the field.</p>

<p>Some HAR-regulated genes are also linked to neurological conditions such as autism and schizophrenia. </p>

Subtle DNA changes shaped human brain evolution

The human brain is one of the most complex structures...

<p>What if the key to extraterrestrial life isn’t hidden in the vastness of the cosmos, but in the tiny movements of microbes? The search for life beyond Earth has captivated humanity for generations, fueling both science fiction adventures and serious space exploration.</p>



<p>One intriguing approach is to observe the spontaneous movement of microorganisms - a key indicator of life. When specific chemicals trigger this movement, the phenomenon is known as chemotaxis.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-alien-life-detection-with-microbes">Alien life detection with microbes</h2>



<p>Researchers in Germany have now developed a simplified method to induce chemotactic movement in some of Earth's smallest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/diverse-life-forms-from-800-million-years-ago-redefine-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">life forms</a>. Ultimately, learning how microbes move could make the detection of alien life more efficient.</p>



<p>“We tested three types of microbes - two bacteria and one type of archaea - and found that they all moved toward a chemical called L-serine,” said Max Riekeles, a researcher at the <a href="https://www.tu.berlin/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Berlin</a>.</p>



<p>“This movement, known as chemotaxis, could be a strong indicator of life and could guide future space missions looking for living organisms on Mars or other planets.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-that-defy-extremes">Microbes that defy extremes</h2>



<p>The microorganisms selected for the study are known for their resilience in extreme conditions. </p>



<p>Bacillus subtilis, highly motile in its spore form, can endure temperatures up to 100°C (212°F). Pseudoalteromonas haloplanktis, isolated from Antarctic waters, thrives between -2.5°C (27.5°F) and 29°C (84.2°F). </p>



<p>Meanwhile, the archaeon Haloferax volcanii is adapted to the high-salinity environments of the Dead Sea.</p>



<p>“<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/23-new-marine-bacteria-species-discovered-that-influence-global-ocean-cycles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bacteria</a> and archaea are two of the oldest forms of life on Earth, but they move in different ways and evolved motility systems independently from each other,” Riekeles explained. “By testing both groups, we can make life detection methods more reliable for space missions.”</p>



<p>The amino acid L-serine, which has been shown to trigger chemotaxis in various life forms, was used to stimulate movement in the microorganisms. </p>



<p>Scientists speculate that if extraterrestrial life exists on Mars and shares biochemical similarities with Earth life, Martian microbes could also be attracted to L-serine.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-simple-method-for-alien-life-detection">Simple method for alien life detection</h2>



<p>The study revealed that L-serine acted as an attractant for all three species. </p>



<p>“Especially the usage of H. volcanii broadens the scope of potential life forms that can be detected using chemotaxis-based methodologies, even when it is known that some archaea possess chemotactic systems,” Riekeles explained. </p>



<p>“Since H. volcanii is thriving in extreme salty environments, it could be a good model for the kinds of life we might find on Mars.”</p>



<p>To achieve this, the researchers used a straightforward technique which included a slide with two chambers separated by a thin membrane. The microorganisms were placed on one side, while L-serine was introduced on the other.</p>



<p>“If the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/living-microbes-discovered-in-2-billion-year-old-rocks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbes</a> are alive and able to move, they swim toward the L-serine through the membrane,” Riekeles explained. “This method is easy, affordable, and doesn’t require powerful computers to analyze the results.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-achieving-more-with-fewer-resources">Achieving more with fewer resources </h2>



<p>For this technique to be used on extraterrestrial life-detection missions, however, certain modifications will be necessary.</p>



<p>“Smaller and more robust equipment that can survive the harsh conditions of space travel and a system that can work automatically without human intervention are two of them,” noted the researchers.</p>



<p>Once these challenges are addressed, microbial movement could help uncover life in unexpected corners of the cosmos - perhaps even in the subsurface ocean of Jupiter’s moon Europa.</p>



<p>“This approach could make life detection cheaper and faster, helping future missions achieve more with fewer resources,” concluded Riekeles. “It could be a simple way to look for life on future <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-missions-prepare-intense-solar-storms-coming-red-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars missions</a> and a useful addition for direct motility observation techniques.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>



<p>The implications of this research extend beyond Mars. If chemotaxis can serve as a universal biosignature, future missions could deploy similar methods to detect life in other extraterrestrial environments. </p>



<p>Europa, Enceladus, and Titan - with their subsurface oceans and organic-rich chemistry - are prime candidates for exploration.</p>



<p>Chemotaxis-based detection could be particularly useful in missions targeting icy moons, where microbial ecosystems may exist beneath thick ice layers. </p>



<p>These environments pose challenges for direct observation, making indirect detection methods like chemotaxis especially valuable.</p>



<p>This new approach could also complement existing life-detection techniques, such as atmospheric biosignature analysis and organic molecule detection.</p>



<p>By integrating multiple strategies, scientists can improve the reliability of extraterrestrial life detection and refine future astrobiology missions.</p>



<p>As space agencies plan the next steps in the search for alien life, this simplified test on the movement of microbes could become a key tool in identifying signs of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/key-compound-suggests-that-life-beyond-earth-could-be-common/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">life beyond Earth</a>.</p>

Finding alien life may be as simple as watching microbes move

<p>The mysteries of the universe continue to unfold as the James Webb Space Telescope captures yet another breathtaking image. This time, the focus is on HH 30, a fascinating celestial structure that provides a unique view into the early formation of planets.</p>



<p>Located within the dark cloud LDN 1551 in the Taurus Molecular Cloud, HH 30 presents an extraordinary, edge-on protoplanetary disc that is surrounded by jets and a disc wind.</p>



<p>For decades, astronomers have studied these discs to understand how dust grains <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/beautiful-stellar-nursery-herbig-haro-objects-orion-constellation-captured-by-hubble/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolve</a> and eventually give rise to planets. Thanks to <a href="https://webbtelescope.org/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Webb</a>’s unmatched sensitivity and resolution, researchers can now explore HH 30 in greater detail than ever before.</p>



<p>Combined with past observations from the <a href="https://hubblesite.org/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hubble Space Telescope</a> and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), these new findings reveal an active and complex environment where cosmic forces shape the future of planetary systems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-nature-of-herbig-haro-objects">The nature of Herbig-Haro objects</h2>



<p>Herbig-Haro objects like HH 30 play an important role in star formation. These small nebulae appear in regions where young stars eject gas, which then heats up and glows as it interacts with surrounding material. </p>



<p>HH 30 is a striking example of a body undergoing this process. It is characterized by a jet of gas that extends outward in a narrow stream.</p>



<p>At one end of the jet, the source star remains hidden behind a dense, edge-on protoplanetary disc. This unique perspective allows scientists to observe how dust behaves in a developing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hubble-detects-awe-inspiring-newborn-star/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planetary system</a>. </p>



<p>Unlike discs that appear face-on, edge-on discs provide a direct look at how particles settle, migrate, and gather in specific regions.</p>



<p>The significance of HH 30 extends beyond its stunning appearance. Since its discovery with the Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers have used it as a model for understanding other edge-on discs. By studying HH 30, they gain insights into the evolution of similar systems across the cosmos.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-collaboration-in-modern-astronomy">Collaboration in modern astronomy</h2>



<p>An international team of researchers has taken full advantage of Webb’s capabilities to analyze HH 30. They combined data from Webb, Hubble, and <a href="https://www.almaobservatory.org/en/home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ALMA</a> to observe the system at multiple wavelengths, thus creating a detailed and layered picture of its structure.</p>



<p>ALMA’s long-wavelength observations reveal the location of millimeter-sized dust grains within the disc. These larger particles cluster in a thin, dense region at the center, and act as the foundation for future planet formation.</p>



<p>Meanwhile, Webb’s infrared imaging captures much smaller dust grains, some only a millionth of a meter across. These microscopic particles are spread more widely throughout the disc, providing clues about how material redistributes over time.</p>



<p>This multiwavelength approach highlights the importance of collaboration in modern <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/young-stellar-objects-observing-the-early-lives-of-stars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">astronomy</a>. </p>



<p>No single telescope can capture the full complexity of these structures. By combining different technologies, scientists can piece together a more complete story of how planetary systems emerge from swirling clouds of dust and gas.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-dust-behaves-in-hh-30">How dust behaves in HH 30 </h2>



<p>The recent Webb observations were part of the Webb GO program <a href="https://www.stsci.edu/jwst/science-execution/program-information?id=2562" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">#2562</a>, led by astronomers F. Ménard and K. Stapelfeldt. The researchers set out to investigate how dust evolves within edge-on discs like HH 30, and to collect valuable data about the early stages of planetary <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/stellar-nursery-ngc-1333-shines-in-the-perseus-cloud/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">development</a>.</p>



<p>ALMA’s radio data confirmed that larger dust grains do not remain scattered throughout the disc but instead migrate and settle into a narrow, compact layer.</p>



<p>This process is essential for planet formation, as concentrated dust regions provide the necessary conditions for particles to collide and stick together. Over time, these grains grow into pebbles, then boulders, and eventually planets.</p>



<p>Understanding how dust behaves in HH 30 helps refine theories about planet formation in other star systems. </p>



<p>By identifying where and how dust settles, scientists gain deeper insights into the forces that shape emerging planets and determine their compositions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dynamic-environment-of-hh-30">Dynamic environment of HH 30</h2>



<p>Beyond dust evolution, data from Webb, Hubble, and ALMA revealed a fascinating interplay of structures within HH 30.</p>



<p>At the heart of the system, a high-speed jet of gas shoots out perpendicular to the narrow central disc. This jet is surrounded by a wider, cone-shaped outflow of material, adding to the complexity of the scene.</p>



<p>Further outward, a broad nebula reflects the light from the young, hidden star. This reflected glow provides a rare glimpse into the conditions surrounding a forming planetary system. The interactions between the jet, outflow, and nebula illustrate the turbulence of early planet-forming environments.</p>



<p>These findings confirm that HH 30 is far from static. Instead, it is an evolving, active region where gas, dust, and radiation interact in ways that ultimately shape the formation of planets. </p>

<p>The study of HH 30 goes beyond understanding a single disc. <p>The Arctic, long considered a remote and icy wilderness, is becoming&nbsp;warmer&nbsp;and undergoing dramatic changes. Once a symbol of resilience against the forces of nature, it now stands as one of the most vulnerable regions on Earth. </p>



<p>The rising global temperatures are not only reshaping its physical landscape but also threatening the delicate ecosystems and communities that depend on it. </p>



<p>The future of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/permafrost-is-no-longer-permanent-arctic-communities-in-danger/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic</a> is not a distant concern - it is unfolding now, and the consequences will be felt worldwide.</p>



<p>In 2024, the world crossed a sobering threshold. For the first time, global air temperatures averaged more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels.</p>



<p>This milestone set off a chain reaction of extreme weather events, including unprecedented rainfall and flooding in the Sahara Desert and brutal heat waves across multiple continents. </p>



<p>Despite years of warnings from scientists, the reality of climate change is becoming impossible to ignore.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-a-warming-planet">Future of a warming planet</h2>



<p>Surpassing 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) was never meant to be a stopping point. Scientists have long cautioned that without aggressive action, temperatures would continue to rise.</p>



<p>Based on the current commitments made by governments to limit greenhouse gas emissions, the planet is projected to warm by 2.7 degrees Celsius (4.9 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels by the end of the century.</p>



<p>This level of warming would have devastating consequences, with no place on Earth experiencing them as profoundly as the Arctic.</p>



<p>The Arctic is warming faster than any other region on the planet. Ice that has existed for thousands of years is vanishing. </p>



<p>Permafrost, which has locked away vast amounts of carbon, is beginning to thaw. The effects of these changes will not remain confined to the polar regions.</p>



<p>The impacts will ripple outward, influencing global weather patterns, sea levels, and ecosystems in ways that are still being fully understood.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-arctic-s-fate-in-a-warming-world">The Arctic’s fate in a warming world</h2>



<p>In a review paper published in the journal <em>Science</em>, researchers examined the rapid changes taking place in the Arctic.</p>



<p>The study was led by Julienne Stroeve, a senior research scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) and professor at the Centre for Earth Observation Science at the <a href="https://umanitoba.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Manitoba</a>.</p>



<p>The research provides a comprehensive look at how continued warming will reshape the Arctic landscape and what that means for the planet as a whole.</p>



<p>“The Arctic is warming at four times the rate of the rest of the planet,” said Stroeve. </p>



<p>“At 2.7 degrees Celsius of global warming, we will see more extreme and cascading impacts in this region than elsewhere, including sea-ice-free Arctic summers, accelerated melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet, widespread permafrost loss, and more extreme air temperatures."</p>



<p>"These changes will devastate infrastructure, ecosystems, vulnerable communities, and wildlife.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-alarming-arctic-transformations">Alarming Arctic transformations</h2>



<p>The findings of the review paper build on the work of the United Nations <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change</a>’s Sixth Assessment Report. </p>



<p>The study updates previous knowledge by focusing on three critical areas of Arctic transformation: sea ice, the Greenland Ice Sheet, and permafrost. </p>



<p>By analyzing existing research, the study presents a clearer picture of how the Arctic will respond to continued warming.</p>



<p>If global temperatures rise to 2.7 degrees Celsius, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-arctic-may-be-ice-free-sooner-than-we-expected/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic</a> air temperatures will consistently surpass historical extremes. Ice that once covered the Arctic Ocean year-round will disappear for several months each summer. </p>



<p>The Greenland Ice Sheet, which holds enough ice to raise global sea levels significantly, will see an alarming expansion of areas where surface temperatures remain above freezing for extended periods. </p>



<p>At the same time, surface permafrost will decline to half of its pre-industrial levels, releasing more carbon into the atmosphere and exacerbating global warming.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-impact-of-arctic-warming">Global impact of Arctic warming </h2>



<p>The loss of Arctic ice is not just a regional issue. It is a critical factor in regulating the planet’s climate. The Arctic acts as Earth’s refrigerator, reflecting sunlight and helping to cool the atmosphere. </p>



<p>As ice disappears, the darker ocean absorbs more heat, accelerating the warming process in a cycle that scientists call Arctic amplification.</p>



<p>This shift will have severe consequences beyond the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-warming-permafrost-melt-devastating-role-accelerating-global-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic</a>. The melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet will contribute to rising sea levels, threatening coastal cities and small island nations. </p>



<p>Changes in Arctic weather patterns will disrupt global climate systems, leading to more frequent and intense storms, droughts, and extreme temperatures in regions far from the poles. </p>



<p>The thawing of permafrost will release trapped greenhouse gases, further accelerating global warming and creating additional challenges for efforts to slow climate change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-activity-and-arctic-warming">Human activity and Arctic warming</h2>



<p>The study serves as a stark reminder that human activity is the driving force behind these changes. The choices made today will determine the future of the Arctic and the planet as a whole. </p>



<p>Scientists hope that by presenting a clear picture of what lies ahead, decision-makers will take meaningful action to reduce emissions and slow the pace of warming.</p>



<p>Study co-author Dirk Notz is a professor for polar research at the University of Hamburg.</p>



<p>“Our paper shows that, already today, mankind has the power to wipe out entire landscapes from the surface of our planet,” said Notz. </p>



<p>“It’d be amazing if we could become more aware of this power and the responsibility that goes with it, as the future of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-industrialization-how-will-it-impact-delicate-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic</a> truly lies in our hands.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-time-to-act-is-now">The time to act is now</h2>



<p>The study relied on data from NSIDC’s <a href="https://nsidc.org/sea-ice-today" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sea Ice Today</a> and <a href="https://nsidc.org/ice-sheets-today" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ice Sheets Today</a> projects to analyze changes in Arctic ice conditions. </p>



<p>The findings add to the growing body of evidence showing that climate change is not a distant threat. It is happening now, and its effects are accelerating.</p>



<p>While the Arctic may seem far removed from the daily lives of many people, the changes occurring there will have far-reaching consequences for the entire planet.</p>



<p>The fate of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/first-ice-free-day-in-the-arctic-may-arrive-in-2027/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic</a> is not yet sealed. There is still time to prevent the worst outcomes, but it will require a global effort. </p>



<p>Governments must commit to stronger emissions reductions, businesses must invest in sustainable practices, and individuals must push for change.</p>

<p>Aging is a natural process, but many seek ways to delay its effects. The desire to maintain health and vitality has led researchers to explore different interventions. </p>



<p>Some studies suggest that reducing calorie intake can slow aging in humans. Others indicate that omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D may influence biological aging in animals.</p>



<p>However, until recently, it was unclear whether these approaches would have the same <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/muscles-defy-aging-with-remarkable-resilience/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">impact on humans</a>.</p>



<p>A team of researchers set out to investigate whether these simple, accessible measures could influence aging at a biological level. </p>



<p>The findings suggest that certain lifestyle changes might hold the key to slowing down the body’s natural decline.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-omega-3-and-aging-in-older-adults">Omega-3 and aging in older adults</h2>



<p>One of the most extensive studies on aging is the DO-HEALTH trial led by Heike Bischoff-Ferrari at the <a href="https://www.uzh.ch/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Zurich</a>. The team explored whether vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and regular exercise could impact aging in humans.</p>



<p>Previous research had already demonstrated that these three factors contribute to better health by reducing infections, preventing falls, and lowering cancer risks.</p>



<p>“These results inspired us to measure the direct influence of these three therapies on the biological aging process in the Swiss DO-HEALTH participants,” said Bischoff-Ferrari.</p>



<p>The research team aimed to determine whether these benefits extended beyond general health and actually slowed down the biological <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-discover-the-cellular-mortality-timer-that-dictates-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">markers of aging</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-aging-study">Focus of the aging study</h2>



<p>The trial included 2,157 participants who were randomly divided into eight groups. Each group followed a different combination of vitamin D, omega-3s, exercise, or a placebo to assess aging.</p>



<p>Some received all three interventions, while others took only one or two. The experts monitored participants over three years, conducting follow-up phone calls every three months and in-depth health assessments at yearly intervals.</p>



<p>The DO-HEALTH cohort is the largest European study of healthy adults over 70. Funded by the EU’s Seventh Framework Program for Research, it represents a significant effort to understand how simple interventions can improve <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secrets-of-aging-discovered-in-plant-leaves/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aging outcomes</a>.</p>



<p>The Swiss National Science Foundation provided additional support for epigenetic measurements.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biological-vs-chronological-aging">Biological vs. chronological aging</h2>



<p>Aging can be measured in different ways. Chronological age is simply the number of years a person has lived, while biological age reflects the body's actual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-bodies-begin-breaking-down-very-precise-age/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">condition</a>. </p>



<p>Some people age faster due to genetic factors, lifestyle choices, or environmental influences. Others remain biologically younger than their chronological years suggest.</p>



<p>To measure biological aging, scientists use a tool called an epigenetic clock. This method tracks DNA modifications, specifically methylation, which can indicate how quickly a body is aging. </p>



<p>The DO-HEALTH study applied this technique to analyze whether certain interventions influenced biological aging.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-epigenetic-clocks">Role of epigenetic clocks </h2>



<p>The research team collaborated with Steve Horvath, a senior researcher at Altos Labs Cambridge. Horvath is a pioneer in the development of epigenetic clocks, which have become an essential tool for measuring aging at the molecular level.</p>



<p>The study examined 777 individuals over the age of 70. Each participant was assigned one of eight treatment plans, which included taking 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily, consuming 1 gram of omega-3 fatty acids, or engaging in 30 minutes of strength training three times per week. </p>



<p>Some participants followed a combination of these interventions, while others received a placebo. The goal was to observe whether any of these treatments influenced biological aging over three years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-omega-3-slowed-biological-aging">Omega-3 slowed biological aging</h2>



<p>Blood samples from the participants provided valuable insights. Researchers found that taking omega-3 fatty acids slowed down biological aging by up to four months. </p>



<p>This effect was consistent regardless of gender, age, or body mass index. More significantly, the combination of omega-3s, vitamin D, and strength training yielded even stronger results.</p>



<p>“This result extends our previous findings from the DO-HEALTH study, in which these three factors combined had the greatest impact on reducing the risk of cancer and preventing premature frailty over a three-year period, to slowing down the biological <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-25-years-of-research-revealed-about-brain-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aging process</a>,” noted Bischoff-Ferrari.</p>



<p>The findings suggest that each factor works through different mechanisms that complement each other, leading to a greater overall effect when combined.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-study">Significance of the study</h2>



<p>The study provides evidence that simple lifestyle changes, including Omega-3 intake, can influence biological aging.</p>



<p>While the difference of a few months may seem small, slowing down aging on a molecular level could have long-term health benefits. </p>



<p>A slower aging process might reduce the risk of age-related diseases, improve quality of life, and extend healthy lifespan.</p>



<p>Despite these promising findings, the researchers acknowledge that measuring biological aging remains a challenge. </p>



<p>“There is no generally accepted gold standard for measuring biological age. However, we analyzed the best currently validated epigenetic clocks, which reflect the state of the art," said Bischoff-Ferrari.</p>



<p>The study contributes to a growing body of research exploring how lifestyle factors influence aging at a biological level.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-expanding-to-a-broader-population">Expanding to a broader population</h2>



<p>One of the study’s limitations is its focus on Swiss participants. Biological aging can be influenced by genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors, which vary across populations. </p>



<p>To gain a more comprehensive understanding, the researchers plan to expand the study to include participants from Germany, France, Austria, and Portugal. </p>



<p>This broader dataset will help determine whether the findings apply to a more diverse range of individuals.</p>



<p>The DO-HEALTH study is part of a larger effort to refine methods for measuring and slowing aging. </p>



<p>Bischoff-Ferrari and her team are working with the <a href="https://healthspanextension.science" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Global Health Span Extension</a> Consortium to validate biological clocks and improve the accuracy of aging biomarkers.</p>

<p>Human height has been evolving over the past century, with both men and women getting taller and heavier across the spectrum. Researchers suggest these shifts are tied to living conditions, broader health measures, and the dynamic ways <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/who-is-happier-being-single-men-or-women/">men and women</a> respond to their environments.</p>



<p>While everyone has seen gains, recent <a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsbl.2024.0565" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">work</a> points to men making larger strides. There’s more to the story than meets the eye.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-of-height-in-men-and-women">Evolution of height in men and women</h2>



<p>A century ago, <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4961475/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">scientists</a> began investigating trends in human stature in different populations. The goal was to see how factors such as nutrition, disease rates, and economic changes might leave lasting marks on adult height and weight.</p>



<p>Some teams uncovered that better diets and improved health care often resulted in taller generations (<a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4961475/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC</a>), 2016). Their work laid the groundwork for more recent efforts to track how these gains compare between men and women.</p>



<p>More recent research <a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsbl.2024.0565" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">work</a> from this year builds on that older study. Scientists, such as <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Lewis-Halsey#:~:text=Lewis%20Halsey%20is%20a%20Professor,and%20adaptations%20for%20energy%20efficiency." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Professor Lewis Halsey</a> from the <a href="https://www.roehampton.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Roehampton</a>, an environmental physiologist, have focused on what other factors, apart from better diets, might be influencing the weights and heights of adults. </p>



<p>They also consider evolution and mating preferences to explain why the height gap between men and women might be increasing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-living-conditions-affect-height">How living conditions affect height</h2>



<p>When researchers measured differences across countries, they turned to indices that reflect overall well-being. </p>



<p>One index, the <a href="https://hdr.undp.org/data-center/human-development-index#/indicies/HDI" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Human Development Index (HDI)</a>, looks at a nation’s average life expectancy, years of schooling, and income.</p>



<p>In one large-scale <a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsbl.2024.0565" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> that examined individuals in dozens of countries, every bump in HDI seemed to bring clear gains in adult size - both height and weight. Yet, men outpaced women in these increases, by more than double.</p>



<p>This pattern was also measured against income inequality through another global indicator. Where inequality was high, the ability to achieve full growth potential decreased.</p>



<p>Researchers found that men’s stature is often more sensitive to environmental stressors, so in tough settings, men’s growth can stall more prominently.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-men-women-and-height-differences">Men, women, and height differences</h2>



<p>“On average <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-evolution-why-men-are-advancing-faster-than-women/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">men are taller</a> and more muscular than women, which confers on them advantages related to female choice,” wrote the authors of the 2025 study<strong>. </strong></p>



<p>Part of this advantage lies in mating preferences: the idea that, over time, taller men have had better odds of passing on their traits.</p>



<p>Researchers believe that, in situations where food is ample and disease burdens are lower, men experience a more pronounced boost in height and weight than women do.</p>



<p>The assumption is that this sex-based difference has deeper evolutionary roots. Larger bodies for men might be linked to strength and competitiveness, which could have historically helped them secure partners more easily.</p>



<p>In modern contexts, these same traits still seem to matter, even if life has changed dramatically since our ancestors roamed the planet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-2016-research-showed">What the 2016 research showed</h2>



<p>In <a href="https://elifesciences.org/articles/13410" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2016</a>, an analysis of adult height suggested that gains were not spread evenly across countries (NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC). The project found stark differences between various regions.</p>



<p>Europe and parts of East Asia showed big leaps in adult height, while some nations in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia saw little movement or even declines. </p>



<p>That earlier work also revealed how American men and women, once near the global top in average height, fell behind countries with steadily improving healthcare and nutrition.</p>



<p>The findings back then hinted that living conditions shape growth, but the focus was not just about getting taller. Being taller was linked to health benefits, fewer birth complications, and even higher income in some populations.</p>



<p>At the same time, experts cautioned that taller stature can come with vulnerabilities like higher rates of certain cancers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insight-from-the-2025-findings">Insight from the 2025 findings</h2>



<p>More recently, researchers have taken these ideas further by examining both height and body mass over the decades. Their efforts highlight how men’s growth appears to be more “expensive” in terms of energy.</p>



<p>Bigger bodies require more nutrients, so when the environment offers stable healthcare and abundant food, men see a greater surge in these body dimensions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We’re seeing insights into how sexual selection has shaped the male and female body and how improved environments, in terms of food and a lower burden of disease, have freed us from our shackles,” commented Professor Halsey from the University of Roehampton.</p>



<p>Looking at historical records from within a single country, like the United Kingdom, backs up the global results. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mens-brains-shrink-in-the-evening-and-reset-overnight/">Men</a> show a steeper increase in both height and weight.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-any-of-this-matter">Why does any of this matter?</h2>



<p>The disparity might spark questions about health management, especially because men’s size can be more sensitive to setbacks such as infections in early life. Researchers often see men’s height as a useful barometer for overall living conditions.</p>



<p>When disease rates are high and nutrition is poor, men’s measurements respond more sharply. When these factors improve, men’s gains are larger.</p>



<p>Women still make noticeable progress, but they face fewer extreme swings. Some scientists suggest that female bodies, due to their vital role in reproduction, cannot afford as much growth fluctuation.</p>



<p>Others note that cultural preferences for male height have played a part in amplifying certain traits across generations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-height-of-men-and-women">Future height of men and women</h2>



<p>By examining <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-women-experience-more-chronic-pain-than-men/">sex-based differences</a> in height and weight, public health experts may find new ways to measure progress. </p>



<p>When looking at improved living conditions, a steep increase in men’s average size can signal better nutrition and fewer childhood illnesses.</p>



<p>Height alone won’t predict every health outcome, though. The research underscores the value of a well-rounded approach to health, one that considers everything from prenatal care to consistent access to nutritious foods.</p>



<p>Size is not the only indicator of well-being, but it does serve as a clear marker of the opportunities and obstacles that define our early years. </p>



<p>Men may experience these environmental factors more intensely, which makes male growth an especially telling measurement.</p>

<p>A study published in the journal <em>European Neuropsychopharmacology</em> suggests that stress during pregnancy may leave epigenetic imprints on placental genes linked to cortisol regulation.</p>



<p>Cortisol plays a key role in fetal growth and stress response, and disruptions in its regulation could have lasting effects on a child’s development.</p>



<p>This discovery emphasizes the importance of maternal mental health. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pregnancy-stress-and-the-placenta">Pregnancy stress and the placenta</h2>



<p>The study was led by Lourdes Fañanás, a professor at the Faculty of Biology and the Institute of Biomedicine (<a href="https://www.ub.edu/ibub/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IBUB</a>) at the University of Barcelona. The research was co-led by Elisabeth Binder from the <a href="https://www.psych.mpg.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry</a>.</p>



<p>The investigation was focused on how maternal stress can leave biological marks on the placenta. </p>



<p>The placenta is a vital organ during pregnancy, supplying oxygen and nutrients to the fetus. It also responds to external factors, including maternal stress, to help the fetus adapt to its environment.</p>



<p>However, the exact ways in which the placenta adjusts to stressors and influences <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pregnancy-may-speed-up-aging-in-women/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fetal development</a> are still not fully understood.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-placenta-and-stress-regulation">Placenta and stress regulation </h2>



<p>Epigenetics refers to modifications that affect gene function without changing the DNA sequence. The study found that maternal stress can cause epigenetic changes in placental genes. These changes particularly affect genes involved in cortisol regulation, such as HSD11B2, NR3C1, and FKBP5.</p>



<p>Cortisol is an essential hormone that helps the body respond to stress. In pregnancy, it plays a critical role in fetal development by influencing growth, metabolism, and brain function.</p>



<p>When stress disrupts the proper regulation of cortisol, it could impact the baby’s ability to handle stress after birth. The placenta usually acts as a barrier, controlling how much maternal cortisol reaches the fetus. </p>



<p>However, if stress alters the placenta’s function through epigenetic changes, it may affect fetal exposure to cortisol and have long-term consequences for the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-pregnancy-changes-the-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">child’s health</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changes-in-stress-related-genes">Changes in stress-related genes</h2>



<p>This pilot study, funded by a CIBERSAM Intramural project, involved 45 first-time pregnant women who were considered healthy. </p>



<p>Researchers measured their cortisol levels and depressive symptoms throughout pregnancy. After delivery, they collected and analyzed placental samples to examine potential epigenetic changes.</p>



<p>Seven weeks after birth, the babies underwent neuro-developmental assessments using Brazelton’s Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (<a href="https://www.childrenshospital.org/research/centers/brazelton-institute-research/nbas" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBAS</a>). This test evaluates reflexes, motor abilities, and social responses, providing insights into early <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/calcium-zinc-are-keys-to-healthier-pregnancy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">developmental outcomes</a>. </p>



<p>The team used advanced sequencing technology to study epigenetic changes in large sections of DNA, offering a detailed look at how the placenta responds to maternal stress.</p>



<p>The findings indicate that stress during early pregnancy may have the strongest effect on these epigenetic changes. The altered genes linked to cortisol regulation suggest that maternal stress may influence fetal development in ways that extend beyond pregnancy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-need-for-early-maternal-support">Need for early maternal support</h2>



<p>Águeda Castro, first author of the study and a CIBERSAM researcher at the University of Barcelona, highlighted the importance of supporting maternal mental health from the start of pregnancy.</p>



<p>“This study reinforces the importance of taking care of the mental health of mothers from the beginning of pregnancy, since stress could leave a biological imprint on the baby’s development through epigenetic mechanisms that we are just beginning to understand,” said Castro.</p>



<p>This research adds to growing evidence that maternal stress is not just a temporary concern but one that could shape a child’s future health. </p>



<p>Mental health care should be an integral part of prenatal care, ensuring that pregnant women receive emotional support alongside physical health monitoring. Addressing stress early on may help prevent long-term developmental challenges in children.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-research">Significance of the research</h2>



<p>The Institute of Biomedicine of the University of Barcelona selected this study as the best scientific publication of November 2024. Its recognition highlights the study’s innovative approach to understanding prenatal health and epigenetics. </p>



<p>While the research offers important insights, the sample size remains small. More extensive studies are needed to confirm these findings and explore potential interventions.</p>



<p>Future research could focus on identifying risk factors that make some mothers more susceptible to stress-related epigenetic changes. Understanding these risks may help develop targeted interventions to support expectant mothers, particularly those in vulnerable situations.</p>

<p>While more research is needed, this study emphasizes the deep connection between a mother’s mental state and her baby’s development. Taking care of expectant mothers’ emotional well-being is not just beneficial for them - it may shape the long-term health of the next generation.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
