<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>

<p>Mountains can leave us in awe, but they rarely offer easy clues about what lies beneath them. The Tibetan Plateau, often called the "roof of the world," continues to baffle geologists and others curious about Earth’s hidden workings.</p>



<p>Many researchers have tried to figure out why this region keeps rising. One group recently tackled the question by analyzing ambient noise tomography recordings from northern Tibet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-the-tibetan-plateau-matters">Why the Tibetan Plateau matters</h2>



<p>The research was a collaboration among Dr. Rizheng He of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Xiaohui Yuan of the Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ), and Dr. Wei Li of the China University of Geosciences.</p>



<p>The experts studied seismic readings that reveal a complex picture of molten material deep <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earthquakes-linked-to-nearby-oil-extraction-fracking-sites/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">beneath the surface</a>.</p>



<p>The Tibetan Plateau was created by the Indian-Eurasian continental collision, which began around 50 million years ago. Some experts view this collision as one of Earth’s major events during the Cenozoic era.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-hoh-xil-basin-is-rising">The Hoh-Xil Basin is rising</h2>



<p>This basin in the northern region has caught the attention of scientists because it experienced a noticeable uplift and post-collisional magmatism in the Early Miocene.</p>



<p>Back then, molten rock found its way into shallower levels, hinting at processes below that might still be active today.</p>



<p>Past seismic studies struggled with coverage gaps in this remote area, leaving scientists without a full picture. Recent instrument deployments now shed more light on the vertical push and the patches of magma that might <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earthquake-activity-will-increase-due-to-glacial-retreat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sit below</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-peering-into-the-crust">Peering into the crust</h2>



<p>The scientists applied ambient noise tomography to map the subsurface. This approach interprets scattered <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-detect-major-earthquakes-months-in-advance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seismic signals</a> to paint a three-dimensional view of the region’s crust and upper mantle.</p>



<p>The experts discovered areas in the upper mantle where S-wave speeds drop significantly below normal. Such zones suggest the presence of molten or partially molten rock, which could alter how the surface behaves under ongoing tectonic forces.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-melt-signals-confirmed">Melt signals confirmed</h2>



<p>“This model shows widespread low S-wave velocity anomalies in the northern Tibetan Plateau, requiring the presence of melts. The crustal and mantle melting aligns with exposed young <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sunken-worlds-discovered-under-the-pacific-ocean-in-earths-mantle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">magmatic rocks</a> in the Hoh-Xil Basin,” said Dr. He.</p>



<p>Experts see this melt as a sign that sections of the lithosphere might be thinning or breaking away, allowing heat to concentrate. When heavier parts of the mantle drop off, new magma can flow upward and cause the crust to thicken.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-redefining-tibetan-plateau-growth">Redefining Tibetan plateau growth</h2>



<p>Geologically speaking, plateau growth often involves complicated feedbacks between deep rock dynamics and the overlying crust.</p>



<p>Many thought the northward expansion of Tibetan topography happened gradually, but the evidence for relatively quick uplift in the Hoh-Xil Basin raises new questions.</p>



<p>Post-collisional magmatism can change the thickness and temperature of the crust, creating localized pockets of expansion. That process has made the plateau’s northern edge rise at different intervals from the rest of the region, leaving a patchwork of uplift histories.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-removal-matters">Why removal matters</h2>



<p>Scientists point to lithospheric mantle removal as a factor that encourages hotter rocks to appear closer to the surface. This results in partial melting, which eventually feeds magmatic growth and pushes the land upward.</p>



<p>A thinner mantle can also help channel molten material more efficiently, potentially intensifying local deformation. That can create zones of weakness, where rock flows more easily under tectonic stress and changes the mountain-building pattern.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-changes-expected">Future changes expected</h2>



<p>Although the plateau sits far from many large cities, any shift in the ground’s shape could influence rivers and ecosystems downstream. People living in nearby valleys depend on these water sources.</p>



<p>Learning about heat and melt distribution helps experts predict how fast the plateau might continue to rise in the decades ahead. </p>



<p>Ongoing geophysical surveys could reveal more hints of where crustal melting is strongest and where new <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/continent-sized-islands-llsvp-found-inside-earth-are-100-times-taller-than-mount-everest/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">volcanic activity</a> might emerge.</p>



<p>Researchers sometimes compare data from satellites with on-the-ground measurements. The goal is to pinpoint where new uplifts are likely and how they connect with deep mantle dynamics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seismic-data-and-fieldwork">Seismic data and fieldwork</h2>



<p>Multiple institutions now share seismic data to fill in the knowledge gaps, especially in areas that were once inaccessible. </p>



<p>Coordination among research teams is essential because each vantage point captures a different piece of the puzzle, ensuring that no corner remains unexplored.</p>



<p>Scientists also rely on geological fieldwork to examine magmatic rocks that formed during earlier uplift phases. Linking those samples with seismic images can tell a richer story about how the region evolved.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-tibetan-plateau-may-change">How the Tibetan Plateau may change </h2>



<p>Studies of the Himalayan-Tibetan orogen show that collisions can keep rearranging entire mountain systems for millions of years, creating ongoing shifts in crust and mantle structures.</p>



<p>More results from these advanced seismic arrays may reveal just how dynamic the Earth can be as it continues to mold this rugged corner of Asia.</p>



<p>According to some experts, the plateau’s continued growth might spark renewed magmatic activities. Those events could shape new local fault lines or modify existing ones in ways that surprise us.</p>



<p>Ongoing research in the Hoh-Xil Basin may reveal whether these melting regions shift or expand over time, changing how geologists envision the plateau’s future. Such activity might lead to even more localized uplifts that alter the entire profile of northern Tibet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-map-shows-75-percent-of-the-u-s-at-risk-of-damaging-earthquakes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Seismic</a> imaging in northern Tibet is shedding new light on how molten rock shapes high terrain. Each finding adds another piece to the story of how collisions can reshape entire landscapes.</p>



<p>Researchers will likely keep returning to these high-altitude terrains to refine their models and spot new anomalies.</p>



<p>Many aspects remain uncertain, yet the recognition of partial melting in the crust and mantle highlights the complex way mountains and basins evolve. </p>

<p>The relationship between alcohol and mental health is complex. Alcohol can contribute to mental health disorders like depression and anxiety, and people with these conditions are also more likely to misuse alcohol.</p>



<p>For decades, the prevailing belief was that individuals with depression and alcohol use disorder (AUD) drank primarily to self-medicate, seeking relief from negative emotions rather than pursuing pleasure. </p>



<p>However, a recent study from the <a href="https://www.uchicagomedicine.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Chicago Medicine</a> is challenging this assumption. The research reveals that people with AUD and depression experience significant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alcohol-has-a-hidden-impact-on-heart-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stimulation</a> and pleasure when intoxicated, much like those without depression. </p>



<p>These findings not only reshape our understanding of alcohol’s effects but also open new doors for treatment strategies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-responses-to-alcohol">Tracking responses to alcohol</h2>



<p>The study, led by Dr. Andrea King, professor of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience at UChicago, used innovative methods to track real-time <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/even-small-amounts-of-alcohol-increase-cancer-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">responses to alcohol</a> in natural settings.</p>



<p>With the help of smartphone technology, the researchers were able to capture how participants felt during drinking episodes, providing a more accurate picture than traditional lab-based studies.</p>



<p>"We have this folklore that people drink excessively when they're feeling depressed and that it's really about self-medicating," said King. </p>



<p>"In this study of natural environment drinking and smartphone-based reports of the effects of alcohol in real-time, participants with AUD and a depressive disorder reported feeling acute, sustained positive and rewarding alcohol effects - just like their non-depressed counterparts."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-redefining-alcohol-addiction">Redefining alcohol addiction</h2>



<p>The researchers followed 232 participants between the ages of 21 and 35 - a demographic known for higher rates of heavy drinking.</p>



<p>Half of the group met the criteria for AUD in the past year, and these individuals were evenly divided into those who had experienced major depressive disorder and those who had not. </p>



<p>Participants were excluded if they had suicidal ideations or severe withdrawal symptoms, ensuring safety while maintaining a diverse sample.</p>



<p>Using their smartphones, participants answered questions every half hour during a typical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-alcohol-in-moderation-does-not-prolong-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">drinking episode</a> and a non-drinking episode. The data revealed that alcohol consumption reduced negative feelings, but the effect was small and not specific to depression or AUD status. </p>



<p>On the other hand, the positive effects of alcohol were significantly higher in individuals with AUD compared to those without AUD. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pleasure-plays-a-key-role">Pleasure plays a key role</h2>



<p>Surprisingly, the pleasurable effects were similar in both depressed and non-depressed individuals with AUD. This challenges the notion that alcohol addiction is solely driven by an attempt to alleviate distress.</p>



<p>"For nearly a decade, our group has been improving methods to use mobile technologies to measure real-time clinically meaningful outcomes in people with AUD and those at risk for alcohol-related problems," said study co-author Dr. Daniel Fridberg.</p>



<p>"These approaches allow us to bridge the gap between the lab and real life and have led to new insights that could one day result in better treatments."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-treatment-for-alcohol-addiction">Rethinking treatment for alcohol addiction</h2>



<p>The implications of these findings are profound, particularly for how AUD and co-occurring depression are treated. Current treatment strategies often focus on reducing stress and alleviating depressive symptoms, assuming that these factors drive excessive drinking. </p>



<p>However, King argues that this approach addresses only part of the issue. According to her, treatments must also target the heightened feelings of stimulation and reward that both depressed and non-depressed individuals with AUD experience.</p>



<p>"Currently, the focus of treatment is often on resolving stress and symptoms of depression, but that is only addressing one side of the coin if we don't also address the heightened stimulation, liking and wanting more alcohol that occur in both depressed and non-depressed people with AUD," said King. </p>



<p>Her extensive research on human responses to alcohol underscores the importance of understanding how pleasure and reward pathways contribute to addiction. By broadening the scope of treatment to include these factors, clinicians may develop more effective interventions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenging-the-dark-side-of-addiction">Challenging the "dark side of addiction"</h2>



<p>The study also calls into question a widely accepted theory about the progression of addiction. </p>



<p>This theory proposes that repeated heavy drinking leads to changes in the brain's stress and reward systems, causing individuals to shift from drinking for pleasure to drinking to avoid withdrawal and stress. </p>



<p>While this model has been influential, it does not fully account for the high levels of stimulation and pleasure observed in King’s research.</p>



<p>"As treatment providers, we're taught people with AUD are drinking to self-medicate and feel better," said King. "But what exactly are they feeling? From our study, it seems to be high levels of stimulation and pleasurable effects, with a modest decrease in negative states.” </p>



<p>King compared these heightened feelings to an accelerator pedal, fueling dependency rather than merely easing discomfort. This perspective suggests that addiction is not solely about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spike-in-alcohol-use-during-the-pandemic-continues-today/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">escaping pain</a> but also about pursuing intense positive experiences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-sensitivity-to-alcohol">Long-term sensitivity to alcohol</h2>



<p>King’s next project aims to extend these findings to older adults with long-term AUD. Specifically, she plans to examine whether individuals aged 40 to 65 who have struggled with AUD for decades still experience heightened pleasure when drinking. </p>



<p>The prevailing theory would predict blunted positive responses and increased tolerance in these individuals, as prolonged exposure to alcohol is thought to dull its enjoyable effects. </p>



<p>However, King’s previous research raises the possibility that some individuals retain sensitivity to alcohol’s pleasurable effects even after years of heavy drinking.</p>



<p>This upcoming study could provide critical insights into the long-term dynamics of AUD and its interaction with aging. If older <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/even-moderate-drinking-severely-harms-health-despite-past-studies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">drinkers</a> with AUD exhibit sustained sensitivity to alcohol’s rewarding effects, it would challenge existing assumptions about tolerance and addiction.</p>



<p>Moreover, it could inform the development of age-specific treatments that address the unique needs of older individuals with AUD.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-insights-for-better-treatments">New insights for better treatments </h2>



<p>One of the most innovative aspects of this research is its use of mobile technology to gather real-time data in natural environments. </p>



<p>Traditional lab studies often fail to capture the nuances of alcohol consumption in everyday life, where social, emotional, and environmental factors play a significant role. </p>



<p>By using smartphones to track participants’ experiences, King and her team have created a more comprehensive and accurate picture of how alcohol affects individuals with AUD and depression.</p>



<p>"For nearly a decade, our group has been improving methods to use mobile technologies to measure real-time clinically meaningful outcomes in people with AUD and those at risk for alcohol-related problems," said Fridberg. </p>



<p>"These approaches allow us to bridge the gap between the lab and real life and have led to new insights that could one day result in better treatments." </p>



<p>This methodology not only enhances the validity of the findings but also sets a precedent for future research in addiction science.</p>

<p>By focusing on the full spectrum of alcohol’s effects, researchers and clinicians can work together to create a brighter future for those struggling with addiction.</p>

<p>But beyond the hype and anecdotal claims lies a question: does cold-water immersion truly <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wim-hof-method-helps-fight-stress-inflammation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deliver on its promises</a>? </p>



<p>A team of researchers from the University of South Australia (<a href="https://www.unisa.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UniSA</a>) set out to answer this by conducting the most comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of its kind. </p>

<p>While the results suggest that cold-water immersion may have positive effects, they also reveal that these benefits are often short-lived and highly context-dependent. </p>



<p>"Cold-water immersion has been extensively researched and used in sporting contexts to help athletes recover, but despite its growing popularity among health and wellbeing circles, little is known about its effects on the general population," explained UniSA researcher Tara Cain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-short-term-stress-relief">Short-term stress relief</h2>



<p>One of the key findings of the study was that cold-water immersion could reduce stress levels - but only temporarily.</p>



<p>Participants experienced lower <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stress-eats-away-our-brains-cognitive-defenses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stress</a> for approximately 12 hours after exposure. Interestingly, those who incorporated cold showers into their routines reported slight improvements in their quality of life. </p>



<p>These showers lasted anywhere from 20 to 90 seconds, suggesting that even brief exposure to cold water might have some positive effects. However, the researchers noted that these benefits tended to fade after three months, indicating that consistency might be key to sustaining any gains.</p>



<p>Another intriguing discovery was the impact of regular cold showers on sickness-related absences. One study included in the analysis found that participants who took cold showers regularly experienced a 29% reduction in days missed due to illness. </p>



<p>While this finding is promising, it raises further questions about the mechanisms behind such outcomes and whether they apply universally or only to specific groups. </p>



<p>"We also found some links to cold-water immersion and better sleep outcomes, but the data was restricted to males, so its broader application is limited," noted Cain.</p>

<p>Cold-water immersion involves submerging the body in water with temperatures typically ranging from 10 to 15 degrees Celsius (50 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit). </p>



<p>For this study, data was included only if participants were immersed at or above chest level for a minimum of 30 seconds. Practices like cold showers, ice baths, and cold plunges were all included in the analysis.</p>



<p>Dr. Ben Singh highlighted an unexpected aspect of the findings: cold-water immersion causes a temporary increase in inflammation.</p>



<p>"At first glance this seems contradictory, as we know that ice baths are regularly used by elite athletes to reduce inflammation and muscle soreness after exercise," said Dr. Singh.</p>



<p>However, the initial spike in inflammation is not necessarily harmful. Instead, it represents the body’s response to cold as a stressor. </p>



<p>Much like exercise causes short-term muscle damage before leading to stronger muscles, this inflammatory response may help the body adapt and recover over time. This insight could explain why athletes continue to use cold-water therapy despite the temporary rise in inflammation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-who-should-approach-with-caution">Who should approach with caution?</h2>



<p>While the study suggests potential benefits, it also highlights the need for caution, particularly among individuals with pre-existing health conditions. </p>



<p>The temporary increase in inflammation, though beneficial in certain contexts, could pose risks for those with chronic illnesses or other medical concerns. </p>



<p>"Knowing this, people with pre-existing health conditions should take extra care if participating in cold-water immersion experiences as the initial inflammation could have detrimental health impacts," noted Dr. Singh.</p>



<p>The research emphasizes the importance of understanding one’s own body and health status before diving into cold-water practices. For everyday wellness seekers, the findings serve as a reminder that what works for one person may not work for another.</p>



<p>"Whether you are an elite athlete or everyday wellness seeker -- it's important to understand the effects of what you put your body through," said Cain. This personalized approach is crucial when considering any health intervention.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-research-is-needed">Further research is needed</h2>



<p>Despite the promising findings, the study also revealed significant gaps in our understanding of cold-water immersion.</p>



<p>For instance, while there are many claims that it can boost immunity and mood, the evidence supporting these assertions remains weak. The researchers noted that more high-quality, long-term studies are needed to determine who benefits most and what the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breathing-less-oxygen-could-extend-your-lifespan-by-50-or-more/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ideal approach</a> might be.</p>



<p>"Right now, there isn't enough high-quality research to say exactly who benefits most or what the ideal approach is to cold-water immersion," said Cain.</p>



<p>The current data is limited in scope, focusing primarily on specific populations and short-term outcomes. Expanding research to include more diverse groups and longer observation periods will be essential to uncovering the full potential of this practice. </p>



<p>Such studies could provide clearer guidance on how to incorporate cold-water immersion into daily life effectively and safely.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-factors-to-consider">Key factors to consider</h2>



<p>For those intrigued by the idea of cold-water therapy, the study offers valuable insights but also calls for a measured approach.</p>

<p>According to the study, frequent social engagement is associated with a 38% reduction in dementia risk and a 21% reduction in mild cognitive impairment risk. </p>

<p>Researchers followed 1,923 dementia-free older adults with an average age of about 80. Over time, 545 participants developed dementia, and 695 developed mild cognitive impairment. </p>



<p>Each participant underwent yearly evaluations that included detailed medical histories and neuropsychological tests to assess cognitive function. </p>



<p>Social activity levels were measured using a questionnaire that asked participants how often they engaged in six common social activities during the previous year. These activities included dining out, attending sporting events, volunteering, visiting friends or family, and taking trips.</p>



<p>Cognitive function was evaluated through a comprehensive battery of 21 tests designed to measure various types of memory, perceptual speed, and visuospatial abilities. At the start of the study, none of the participants showed signs of cognitive impairment. </p>



<p>However, over an average follow-up period of five years, those who were more socially active demonstrated slower rates of cognitive decline. </p>



<p>Importantly, the analysis accounted for other variables that might influence cognitive health, such as age, physical exercise, and overall health, ensuring that the observed benefits were directly tied to social activity.</p>

<p>The ocean's depths harbor a hidden world of swirling currents that mirror our atmospheric weather patterns. New research has unveiled surprising ways in which atmospheric winds influence ocean eddies, revealing a level of complexity that challenges previous assumptions. </p>



<p>These eddies, circular currents of water roughly 100 kilometers wide, are integral to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-warming-broke-records-for-450-straight-days/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean's weather patterns</a>. Much like how winds shape weather on land, these swirling currents play a crucial role in determining the dynamics of the ocean. </p>



<p>Scientists at the <a href="https://www.rochester.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Rochester</a> have conducted a detailed study using satellite imagery and high-resolution climate models. The team uncovered interactions between the atmosphere and the ocean that were previously misunderstood.</p>

<p>The alarming reality is that microplastics have infiltrated every corner of our environment, from the depths of the ocean’s trenches to the peaks of the highest mountains.</p>



<p>These particles are so small that they are invisible without a microscope. However, their effects on the environment and human health are nothing close to invisible.</p>



<p>Emerging research has linked microplastics to cellular damage, inflammation, and potential long-term health risks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microplastics-and-preterm-birth">Microplastics and preterm birth</h2>



<p>At the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine’s (SMFM) annual gathering, <a href="https://smfm2025.eventscribe.net/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Pregnancy Meeting</a>, new research on microplastics will take center stage. </p>



<p>The findings suggest that microplastics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hundreds-of-thousands-of-nanoplastics-found-in-bottled-water/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nanoplastics</a> are present in higher concentrations in the placentae of premature infants compared to full-term births.</p>



<p>The study was a collaborative effort among investigators at <a href="https://www.unm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The University of New Mexico</a>. The researchers used highly sophisticated mass spectrometry to analyze 175 placentae.</p>



<p>The study was focused on 100 full term placentae, while the rest were preterm, or before 37 weeks of gestation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-do-plastics-reach-the-womb">How do plastics reach the womb?</h2>



<p>The presence of microplastics in the placenta raises critical questions: How do these tiny particles infiltrate the human body, and more importantly, how do they reach an unborn child? </p>



<p>Research suggests that microplastics enter the maternal bloodstream through contaminated food, drinking water, and even the air we breathe. These particles can penetrate the bloodstream and become deposited in multiple organs, including the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-discovered-in-every-human-placenta-tested-after-birth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">placenta</a>.</p>



<p>Previous studies have shown that people <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-confirms-microplastics-have-entered-our-food-chain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ingest</a> substantial amounts of microplastics on a daily basis. </p>



<p>Exposure can also occur through inhaling airborne microplastics present in household dust, which originates from sources such as synthetic fabrics and industrial emissions.</p>



<p>Given their small size and chemical composition, microplastics may disrupt biological processes by carrying harmful additives or acting as vectors for other toxic substances. This raises concerns about their long-term effects on fetal development and pregnancy outcomes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-identifying-the-pathways-of-microplastics">Identifying the pathways of microplastics </h2>



<p>Understanding the pathways of microplastics in the human body is crucial for developing strategies to reduce exposure and mitigate risks for both mothers and newborns.</p>



<p>Study senior author Dr. Kjersti Aagaard is a maternal-fetal subspecialist and research professor at Boston Children’s Hospital and the HCA Institute, who also serves as the medical director of the Gulf Coast Division of HCA Healthcare.</p>



<p>“Advanced technology now enables us to accurately measure microplastics in ways we haven’t been able to in the past," noted Dr. Aagaard.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microplastics-in-preterm-placentae">Microplastics in preterm placentae </h2>



<p>When the researchers analyzed the collected placentae, they found that the levels of microplastics and nanoplastics were significantly higher in those collected preterm. Moreover, these concentrations exceeded any previously recorded levels in human blood.</p>



<p>The researchers theorize that these plastic particles were accumulating in the placenta throughout pregnancy, with escalated exposure and accumulation occurring in instances of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/molecular-timer-may-hold-the-key-to-preventing-preterm-birth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preterm birth</a>.</p>



<p>Study lead author Dr. Enrico R. Barrozo is an expert in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.</p>



<p>"The finding of higher placental concentrations among preterm births was surprising because it was counterintuitive to what you might expect if it was merely a byproduct of the length of time of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/calcium-zinc-are-keys-to-healthier-pregnancy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pregnancy</a>," said Dr. Barrozo.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preterm-delivery-and-microplastic-accumulation">Preterm delivery and microplastic accumulation </h2>



<p>Dr. Aagaard noted that a preterm delivery not only accumulated more microplastics and nanoplastics in its placenta relative to term, but did so at an earlier time point in the pregnancy.</p>



<p>“When combined with other recent research, this study adds to the growing body of evidence, ranging from heart disease to potentially stroke, that demonstrates a real risk of exposure to plastics on human health and disease," said Dr. Aagaard.</p>



<p>The study's abstract was published recently in the January 2025 issue of <em>Pregnancy</em>, a new open-access journal and the first official journal for the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.</p>



<p>The findings raise an urgent question: How can we mitigate the risks posed by microplastics to human health, particularly in early life?</p>

<p>Aerosols play a crucial role in shaping the behavior of clouds, which are composed of tiny water droplets or ice crystals.</p>



<p>These clouds are fundamental to the functioning of Earth’s climate system. They regulate the amount of solar radiation reaching the planet’s surface, which influences temperature and weather patterns.</p>



<p>Liquid water clouds are particularly effective at reflecting solar radiation, contributing significantly to the surface energy balance. In contrast, ice clouds tend to reflect less radiation, leading to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/permafrost-is-no-longer-permanent-arctic-communities-in-danger/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">distinct climatic effects</a>.</p>



<p>Ice clouds typically form at temperatures below −38°C (−36.4°F), but recent observations have shown their formation at higher temperatures in the Arctic. </p>



<p>This phenomenon is closely tied to the presence of ice-nucleating particles (INPs), such as mineral dust, organic aerosols, and bioaerosols.</p>



<p>These aerosols facilitate the formation of ice clouds even when temperatures are warmer than the typical freezing point, highlighting their importance in cloud dynamics and climate regulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arctic-ice-cloud-formation">Arctic ice cloud formation</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/astonishing-glacier-retreat-in-the-arctic-signals-climate-disaster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic</a> region has become a focal point for studying these processes due to its sensitivity to climate change. </p>



<p>Wildfires in Canada, Alaska, and Russia release significant amounts of organic carbon (OC) aerosols, black carbon, and other particles into the atmosphere. </p>



<p>These aerosols often travel long distances and reach the Arctic, where they may influence cloud formation.</p>



<p>However, despite extensive evidence of aerosol transport from lower latitudes, scientists have yet to fully establish a clear connection between these transported particles and ice cloud formation in the Arctic. </p>



<p>This gap in understanding highlights the need for further research into the mechanisms driving Arctic cloud dynamics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildfires-help-to-seed-ice-clouds">Wildfires help to seed ice clouds</h2>



<p>To address this knowledge gap, Professor Kazutoshi Sato and Professor Jun Inoue from Japan’s <a href="https://www.nipr.ac.jp/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Institute of Polar Research</a> led a remarkable study. </p>



<p>Their research aimed to investigate how wildfire aerosols influence ice cloud formation in the Arctic.</p>



<p>The researchers collected data during an expedition to the Chukchi and Beaufort seas in September 2023 aboard the Japanese research vessel RV Mirai.</p>



<p>The team employed a range of advanced tools to gather precise measurements. Instruments like cloud particle sensor sondes and drones were used to measure particle concentrations and analyze cloud properties. </p>



<p>Atmospheric modeling techniques, including backward trajectory models, helped trace the movement of aerosols and identify their source regions. </p>



<p>“In the lower troposphere, our drone-based particle counter recorded particle counts two orders of magnitude higher than the voyage average," said Dr. Sato.</p>



<p>"Using the CPS sonde, we detected ice clouds in the mid-troposphere under temperatures warmer than −15 °C, near a stream of warm and moist air coming from mid-latitudes. These streams are often referred to as an atmospheric river (AR)."</p>



<p>"Our observations suggest that these wildfire aerosols, which have traveled via the AR, contribute to ice cloud formation under relatively warm conditions."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-journey-of-wildfire-aerosols">Journey of wildfire aerosols</h2>



<p>Through backward trajectory analysis, the researchers discovered that organic carbon aerosols originating from Canadian wildfires had traveled thousands of kilometers to reach the Arctic. These particles played a significant role in forming ice clouds at temperatures warmer than usual. </p>



<p>The atmospheric river (AR) originating from wildfire zones passed over areas with high concentrations of organic carbon aerosols before reaching the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/first-ice-free-day-in-the-arctic-may-arrive-in-2027/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic</a>. </p>



<p>“The AR event is a very important event for moisture transport from mid-latitudes to the polar region, and this study also shows that aerosols can be transported by this system as well,” noted Professor Inoue.</p>



<p>This finding highlights the dual role of atmospheric rivers in transporting both moisture and aerosols to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-industrialization-how-will-it-impact-delicate-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic</a>. </p>



<p>Atmospheric rivers are known for carrying large amounts of water vapor from lower latitudes to higher latitudes, contributing to precipitation and cloud formation.</p>



<p>However, the study reveals that they also act as conduits for aerosols, which can influence cloud properties and climate dynamics. </p>



<p>By connecting wildfire emissions to ice cloud formation, the research provides valuable insights into how aerosols interact with Arctic atmospheric processes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-importance-of-vertical-atmospheric-profiles">Importance of vertical atmospheric profiles</h2>



<p>The study highlights the critical need for detailed vertical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-warming-permafrost-melt-devastating-role-accelerating-global-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmospheric profiles</a> to improve numerical models of the Arctic climate. </p>



<p>Such profiles include measurements of aerosol concentrations, their chemical composition, and their distribution across different altitudes.</p>



<p>These data are essential for developing more accurate simulations of aerosol-cloud interactions in the polar regions. </p>



<p>By establishing a clearer link between wildfire-emitted aerosols and ice cloud formation, this research paves the way for future studies that will refine how aerosol transport is represented in climate models.</p>



<p>Understanding these processes is particularly important given the rapid changes occurring in the Arctic. </p>



<p>The region is warming at a rate nearly four times faster than the global average, leading to significant environmental and ecological impacts.</p>



<p>Changes in cloud formation and properties could amplify or mitigate these effects, depending on the specific conditions. </p>



<p>For example, increased ice cloud formation could alter the Arctic’s surface energy balance, potentially accelerating warming trends.</p>

<p>New research provides fresh insights into the distribution of matter in the cosmos over its 13.8 billion-year history. The study suggests our universe has become “messier and more complicated” over time, with a less "clumpy" distribution of matter than initially expected.</p>



<p>“Our work cross-correlated two types of datasets from complementary, but very distinct, surveys. For the most part, the story of structure formation is remarkably consistent with the predictions from Einstein’s gravity," noted Matthew Madhavacheril, a cosmologist at the <a href="https://www.upenn.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Pennsylvania</a>.&nbsp; </p>



<p>"We did see a hint for a small discrepancy in the amount of expected clumpiness in recent epochs, around four billion years ago, which could be interesting to pursue.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cosmic-structures-and-cmb">Cosmic structures and CMB</h2>



<p>To explore the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/missing-law-of-nature-explains-the-evolution-of-everything-that-exists-in-the-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolution</a> of cosmic structures, the research team integrated data from two major astronomical surveys: the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (<a href="https://act.princeton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACT</a>) and the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (<a href="https://www.desi.lbl.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DESI</a>).</p>



<p>“ACT, covering approximately 23% of the sky, paints a picture of the universe’s infancy by using a distant, faint light that’s been travelling since the Big Bang,” explained Joshua Kim, a graduate researcher in Madhavacheril’s group.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Formally, this light is called the cosmic microwave background (CMB), but we sometimes just call it the universe’s baby picture because it’s a snapshot of when it was around 380,000 years old.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-cmb-the-basics">Understanding CMB - the basics</h2>



<p>Scientists measure this faint cosmic microwave background radiation to understand how our universe <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/timescape-dark-energy-doesnt-exist-causing-lumpy-universe-expansion-cmbr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">began and evolved</a>. </p>



<p>They detect it as a uniform, low-level microwave signal coming from every direction in space. This signal has cooled over billions of years, but it still carries vital clues about the early moments of the cosmos.</p>



<p>Researchers study the CMB to learn about the distribution of matter and energy shortly after <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/if-the-big-bang-theory-is-correct-what-exactly-happened/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the Big Bang</a>. </p>



<p>By analyzing its tiny temperature fluctuations, they can trace the formation of galaxies and large-scale structures in the universe. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gravitation-lensing-and-cmb">Gravitation lensing and CMB</h2>



<p>As the ancient light from the CMB travels through the cosmos, it encounters massive structures like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/titanic-galaxy-cluster-collision-defies-all-current-understanding-of-the-universe/">galaxy clusters</a> that warp its path through a phenomenon known as gravitational lensing - a concept first predicted by Albert Einstein over a century ago.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This gravitational lensing effect distorts the CMB, allowing cosmologists to infer properties such as matter distribution and age.</p>



<p>“The LRGs from DESI are like a more recent picture of the universe, showing us how galaxies are distributed at varying distances,” Kim said, comparing the data to the universe’s high school yearbook photo.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It’s a powerful way to see how structures have evolved from the CMB map to where galaxies stand today.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-universe-and-clumpy-matter">The universe and clumpy matter</h2>



<p>By merging the ACT’s lensing maps with DESI’s LRG data, the researchers achieved an unprecedented overlap between ancient and recent cosmic history. </p>



<p>This integration enabled a direct comparison of early- and late-universe measurements.</p>



<p>“This process is like a cosmic CT scan, where we can look through different slices of cosmic history and track how matter clumped together at different epochs. It gives us a direct look into how the gravitational influence of matter changed over billions of years,” Madhavacheril said.</p>



<p>The analysis revealed a small discrepancy: the expected clumpiness or density fluctuations at later epochs did not entirely align with predictions. </p>



<p>The metric Sigma 8 (σ8), which measures the amplitude of matter density fluctuations, indicated less clumping than anticipated.</p>



<p>“Lower values of σ8 indicate less clumping than expected, meaning that cosmic structures might have developed differently than current models suggest,” Kim explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-and-future-directions">Implications and future directions</h2>



<p>While the observed discrepancy in σ8 is not statistically strong enough to confirm new physics, it opens the door to intriguing possibilities.&nbsp;</p>



<p>If the deviation is not due to chance, it could suggest that unaccounted-for physics - such as the role of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-energy-is-ripping-the-universe-apart-but-we-arent-sure-how/">dark energy</a> - may be influencing cosmic structure formation more than previously understood.</p>



<p>However, according to Kim, this discrepancy isn’t strong enough to suggest new physics conclusively - it’s still possible that this deviation is purely by chance.</p>



<p>Moving forward, the research team plans to utilize more powerful telescopes, like the upcoming Simons Observatory, to refine these measurements with higher precision.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This will enable a clearer view of cosmic structures and help determine whether the observed discrepancy is a sign of new physical phenomena or a result of statistical variance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-less-clumpy-universe-but-it-s-still-evolving">Less clumpy universe, but it's still evolving</h2>



<p>The study conducted by Joshua Kim and Mathew Madhavacheril highlights that the universe’s matter distribution is evolving in a manner that is slightly less clumpy than what Einstein’s gravity-based models predict.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While the primary narrative of structure formation remains consistent with established theories, the small discrepancies observed around four billion years ago suggest that there may be additional factors influencing the evolution of cosmic structures.</p>



<p>As the scientific community continues to explore these findings, the integration of advanced observational data and sophisticated statistical models will be crucial in unraveling the complexities of the universe’s ongoing evolution.</p>

<p>Jupiter’s moon Io has once again demonstrated why it holds the title of the most volcanically active body in the solar system. NASA’s Juno mission has detected an enormous volcanic hot spot in Io’s southern hemisphere, which has undergone an eruption unlike any seen before.</p>



<p>The feature, which is larger than Earth’s Lake Superior, releases energy equivalent to six times the total output of all power plants on Earth. </p>



<p>The discovery was made possible by the Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper (<a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/images/pia23594-junos-jiram-instrument/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JIRAM</a>), an instrument provided by the <a href="https://www.asi.it/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Italian Space Agency</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-io-s-biggest-volcanic-eruption">Io’s biggest volcanic eruption</h2>



<p>Juno’s extended mission has allowed it to make multiple close flybys of Io, and capture data that continues to surprise scientists. </p>



<p>The most recent observation, conducted from a greater distance, provided unexpected and extraordinary results.</p>



<p>“Juno had two really close flybys of Io during Juno’s extended mission. And while each flyby provided data on the tormented moon that exceeded our expectations, the data from this latest - and more distant - flyby really blew our minds," ,” said Scott Bolton of the <a href="https://www.swri.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Southwest Research Institute</a>.</p>



<p>"This is the most powerful volcanic event ever recorded on the most volcanic world in our solar system - so that’s really saying something.”</p>



<p>Io, which is roughly the size of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-the-moon-looks-100-million-years-younger-than-its-true-age/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth’s Moon</a>, undergoes immense tidal stress due to its close orbit around Jupiter. The gravitational forces from the gas giant stretch and squeeze Io, which generates intense internal heat.</p>



<p>This process fuels its continuous volcanic activity, with the moon's more than 400 active volcanoes spewing lava and gas into space.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-io-s-changing-landscape-observed-by-juno">Io’s changing landscape observed by Juno</h2>



<p>Images taken by <a href="https://www.missionjuno.swri.edu/junocam/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JunoCam</a> in 2024 highlight dramatic surface changes near Io’s south pole. These images, captured between Juno’s 66th and 68th closest approaches to Jupiter, provide clear evidence of Io’s ever-changing geological features.</p>



<p>The arrows in the images indicate newly formed volcanic deposits, suggesting that fresh eruptions reshaped the terrain within a short period.</p>

<p>Juno’s JIRAM instrument was originally designed to study Jupiter’s atmosphere by detecting infrared light that emerges from deep within the planet’s weather layer.</p>



<p>Since the mission extension, JIRAM has also been used to investigate Jupiter’s largest moons, including Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. </p>



<p>With each flyby, Juno gathers more data on these dynamic celestial bodies, revealing new <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/infrared-images-reveal-how-black-holes-affect-the-space-around-them/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">insights</a> into their composition and activity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-close-flybys-and-infrared-observations">Close flybys and infrared observations</h2>



<p>Juno’s orbital trajectory brings it close to Io every other orbit, allowing repeated observations of the same regions. </p>



<p>During previous flybys in December 2023 and February 2024, the spacecraft came within approximately 930 miles (1,500 kilometers) of Io’s surface.</p>



<p>The latest flyby, conducted on December 27, 2024, occurred from a greater distance of 46,200 miles (74,400 kilometers). </p>



<p>Despite the increased distance, JIRAM successfully detected an intense volcanic eruption that surpassed all previous records.</p>



<p>The detection of this new hot spot represents one of the most <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lava-trails-captured-jupiters-volcanic-moon-io-new-images-shark-vis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">significant findings</a> of Juno’s mission. </p>



<p>JIRAM’s ability to capture infrared light enabled scientists to observe the eruption’s thermal signature, and provide critical data about the intensity and scale of Io’s volcanic activity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-magma-chamber-beneath-io">Magma chamber beneath Io</h2>



<p>“JIRAM detected an event of extreme infrared radiance - a massive hot spot - in Io’s southern hemisphere, so strong that it saturated our detector,” said Alessandro Mura from the <a href="http://www.inaf.it/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Institute for Astrophysics</a>.</p>



<p>“However, we have evidence what we detected is actually a few closely spaced hot spots that emitted at the same time, suggestive of a subsurface vast magma chamber system. The data supports that this is the most intense volcanic eruption ever recorded on Io.”</p>



<p>The estimated size of this feature is staggering; it spans 40,000 square miles (100,000 square kilometers).</p>

<p>This makes it the largest known volcanic hot spot on Io, surpassing even Loki Patera, which is a well-known lava lake that covers about 7,700 square miles (20,000 square kilometers). </p>



<p>The total power output of the eruption exceeded 80 trillion watts, making it the most powerful volcanic event recorded on the Jovian moon.</p>



<p>The discovery suggests the presence of a vast subsurface magma system beneath Io’s crust. Scientists believe that multiple volcanic hot spots erupted simultaneously, and Juno’s observations indicate that magma movement deep inside <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brilliant-new-images-of-jupiters-moon-io-captured-by-juno-spacecraft/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Io</a> could be far more complex than previously thought.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-io-s-surface-and-volcanic-signatures">Io's surface and volcanic signatures</h2>



<p>JunoCam’s visible-light images provided further confirmation of the eruption’s impact. </p>



<p>By comparing images from previous Io flybys with the latest ones from December 27, scientists identified noticeable changes in surface coloration around the newly discovered hot spot. </p>



<p>While these images were taken from a greater distance and at lower resolution, the alterations in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/juno-reveals-the-hidden-forces-behind-jupiters-fiery-moon-io/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">landscape</a> were still evident.</p>



<p>Large volcanic eruptions on Io often leave lasting geological signatures. The moon’s surface is frequently reshaped by pyroclastic deposits, which consist of fragmented rock ejected by volcanic explosions. </p>



<p>Other features include fissure-fed lava flows and volcanic-plume deposits that are rich in sulfur and sulfur dioxide. These elements contribute to the constantly evolving appearance of Io’s surface.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-next">What happens next?</h2>



<p>Juno’s upcoming distant flyby of Io on March 3 will provide another opportunity to study the new hot spot. </p>



<p>Scientists plan to use this next observation to monitor any changes in the region and determine whether the eruption is still ongoing.</p>



<p>Earth-based telescopes may also contribute additional data by capturing images of Io’s active volcanic zones.</p>



<p>“While it is always great to witness events that rewrite the record books, this new hot spot can potentially do much more,” said Bolton. “The intriguing feature could improve our understanding of volcanism not only on Io but on other worlds as well.”</p>



<p>The findings from Juno’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jupiters-moon-io-has-a-huge-new-volcano/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">latest observations</a> could provide insights into volcanic activity beyond the solar system. </p>



<p>Understanding Io’s volcanic processes may help scientists interpret similar geological phenomena on exoplanets and other celestial bodies.</p>

<p>In the morning hours of October 3, the serene South Lhonak Lake transformed into an agent of destruction. What followed was a catastrophic flood disaster that would leave an indelible mark on India's Sikkim region, claiming dozens of lives and reshaping the landscape of the Teesta River valley.</p>



<p>In a recent study, experts have pieced together the dramatic sequence of events during this disaster. </p>



<p>The research was led by Dr. Ashim Sattar of the <a href="https://www.iitbbs.ac.in/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Indian Institute of Technology</a> in Bhubaneswar and Dr. Christian Huggel from the University of Zurich's <a href="https://www.geo.uzh.ch/en/units/eclim.html#:~:text=We%20investigate%20risks%2C%20impacts%20and,systems%20respond%20to%20climate%20change." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Environment and Climate</a> research group.</p>

<p>On October 3, 2023, a sudden and catastrophic event <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-outrun-the-flood-risks-of-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">triggered the flood</a>. Approximately 14.7 million cubic meters of frozen moraine collapsed into South Lhonak Lake. </p>



<p>This collapse caused a massive wave, similar to a tsunami, that reached up to 20 meters in height. The force of this wave breached the moraine, allowing nearly 50 million cubic meters of water to escape. </p>



<p>This volume is equivalent to filling 20,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools, demonstrating the sheer scale of the disaster.</p>



<p>As the water surged downstream, it carved through the 385-kilometer-long valley, causing unprecedented destruction. Sediment, estimated at around 270 million cubic meters, was displaced along the river's course. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vulnerability-of-high-mountain-communities">Vulnerability of high mountain communities </h2>



<p>Roads, bridges, and hydroelectric power plants on the Teesta River were washed away, cutting off communities and crippling local economies. The impact extended beyond infrastructure, affecting ecosystems and farmlands that depended on stable water sources.</p>



<p>At least 55 people lost their lives in the disaster, while another 70 were reported missing. The suddenness of the event left little time for evacuation, increasing the human toll. <p>“This event is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of high mountain regions to the effects of climate change,” said Dr. Huggel. "The thawing of permafrost and the instability of rock, ice, and moraine structures pose major risks.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-flood-disaster">Understanding the flood disaster</h2>



<p>To analyze the flood’s impact, the researchers relied on advanced scientific methods. High-resolution satellite images captured the affected regions before and after the event, allowing scientists to compare structural changes in the landscape. </p>

<p>“Our findings highlight the urgent need for early warning systems and international cooperation to address such challenges,” said Dr. Sattar. </p>



<p>Scientists advocate for a network of real-time monitoring stations that track glacial lake conditions and provide alerts when risks increase.</p>

<p>Rising temperatures weaken the stability of ice, rock, and moraine structures, making high-altitude environments increasingly unpredictable. The consequences extend beyond localized floods, as sediment displacement and altered river courses impact larger ecological systems.</p>



<p>“We need better risk modeling and assessment, as well as robust adaptation strategies, to minimize future disasters,” said Dr. Sattar.</p>



<p>Scientists emphasize the importance of integrating climate projections into risk assessments. More accurate models will help policymakers develop targeted strategies to reduce vulnerabilities in glacial regions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strengthening-regulation-and-preparedness">Strengthening regulation and preparedness</h2>



<p>The research team calls for stricter regulation of hydropower development in high-risk areas. </p>

<p>Predicting and mitigating the effects of climate change while preserving biodiversity is a top priority for both scientists and policymakers. As climate change intensifies, leading to more frequent and severe droughts, understanding the impact on plant ecosystems has become increasingly important. </p>



<p>One of the main challenges is forecasting changes in species richness due to shifts in precipitation patterns. </p>



<p>While it’s established that regions with more water generally support greater plant diversity, results vary at smaller plot levels concerning how rainfall affects species richness.</p>



<p>To improve predictions, it’s essential to explore the underlying mechanisms - particularly how intense droughts and long-term rainfall changes impact <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/un-talks-on-the-drought-crisis-end-without-agreement/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biodiversity</a>.</p>



<p>A new study shows that increased aridity at the plot level is indeed linked to a decrease in plant species richness, and this connection is even more pronounced following extreme droughts. </p>



<p>However, this phenomenon is not easy to detect because in the absence of drought, dominant plant species can obscure this effect.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rainfall-drought-and-plant-diversity">Rainfall, drought, and plant diversity</h2>



<p>Experts at the <a href="https://ecolres.hun-ren.hu/en/home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">HUN-REN Centre for Ecological Research</a> in Hungary examined the intricate connections between long-term changes in rainfall, extreme drought conditions, the biomass of dominant plant species, and plant species diversity in a dryland ecosystem.</p>



<p>The research reveals that increased dryness leads to a reduction in plant species diversity in drylands and uncovers the mechanisms through which rising aridity contributes to biodiversity loss in these fragile <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-now-the-driving-force-behind-droughts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecosystems</a>.</p>



<p>Using data from a seven-year climate change field experiment, the researchers conducted a path analysis to examine how precipitation influences species diversity, both directly and indirectly. </p>



<p>The experiment simulated an extreme drought event followed by long-term variations in summer rainfall with the use of rainout shelters.</p>



<p>Initial analysis showed a strong positive relationship between rainfall and species diversity after extreme drought treatment, but this effect was absent without drought.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dominant-plant-species-and-droughts">Dominant plant species and droughts</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the path analysis uncovered another layer. In the absence of drought, increased rainfall boosted the biomass of dominant grass species, leading to a decrease in overall <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/megadroughts-are-becoming-more-frequent-and-severe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plant diversity</a>.</p>



<p>Nevertheless, the direct effect of rainfall remained positive, enhancing species richness even when dominant species exerted a suppressive impact. Additionally, the study revealed that past extreme droughts strengthened the link between rainfall and species diversity. </p>



<p>“Droughts weaken dominant species, creating opportunities for other plants to thrive, potentially altering the plant community,” explained study lead author Dr. Gábor Ónodi.</p>



<p>The findings highlight the complex interactions between rainfall, dominant species, and biodiversity. </p>



<p>The research shows that while rainfall can boost plant diversity, its benefits are often mediated by the presence of dominant species that can suppress others.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>

These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The science behind it</strong></h2>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
