<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-links-flavor-and-smell">How the brain links flavor and smell</h2>



<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-flavor-and-smell-matter">Why flavor and smell matter</h2>



<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>



<p>This suggests that our flavor experiences are dynamic, adapting with exposure, context, and internal states such as hunger, mood, or attention. </p>



<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-affect-health">How flavor and smell affect health</h2>



<p>This research reframes flavor as a deeply integrated brain process. Smell and taste are not separate streams but overlapping codes that can trick the brain into tasting without tasting.</p>



<p>Beyond solving everyday mysteries like sweet-tasting flavored water, the work raises questions about cravings, overeating, and how our diets are shaped by environments filled with powerful aromas. </p>



<p>The research also suggests that everyday exposure to food-related smells in supermarkets, restaurants, offices, and even advertising spaces may influence us more than we realize.</p>



<p>These aromas may prime the brain to expect certain tastes, creating a loop where scent alone can nudge us toward food choices we might not otherwise make. </p>



<p>Over time, this subtle influence could shape eating habits, nutritional patterns, and even health outcomes, revealing how deeply our sensory world directs behavior long before conscious decisions take place.</p>

<p>In addition to shaping global landscapes and borders, glaciers act as the planet's natural air conditioners, playing a crucial role in regulating Earth’s climate. </p>



<p>These massive ice formations store about 75% of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/satellites-reveal-a-sudden-drop-in-global-freshwater-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world’s fresh water</a> and act as giant reservoirs that release water slowly into rivers and lakes, ensuring a steady supply even during dry seasons. </p>



<p>Additionally, they reflect sunlight back into space, which helps keep our planet cool. Without glaciers, many ecosystems would struggle to survive, and countless communities that rely on <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/retreating-glaciers-and-expanding-meltwater-lakes-in-alaska/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">glacial meltwater</a> for drinking, agriculture, and hydropower would face serious water shortages.</p>



<p>As glaciers shrink, sea levels rise, which can lead to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-outrun-the-flood-risks-of-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coastal flooding</a>, erosion, and the displacement of millions of people living in low-lying areas.</p>



<p>Moreover, melting glaciers contribute to the warming of oceans, which can harm marine life and disrupt global weather patterns.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-melting-glaciers-of-modern-europe">Melting glaciers of modern Europe</h2>



<p>During the last Ice Age, roughly 20,000-22,000 years ago, glaciers from Scandinavia sculpted much of Europe’s landscape, leaving behind features that define the continent’s geography today. </p>



<p>These glaciers, though diminished, continue to play a vital role by storing freshwater, sustaining <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-warming-is-disrupting-the-seasonal-flow-of-rivers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rivers</a> and lakes, and regulating water flow and temperatures.</p>



<p>Modern Europe’s glaciers are predominantly concentrated in regions such as the Alps, Svalbard, Iceland, and the Pyrenees.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Unlike their colossal polar counterparts, these smaller glaciers - classified as valley glaciers, ice caps, and hanging glaciers - are nestled in mountainous terrains. They form when snow accumulation surpasses ablation, eventually compacting into dense glacier ice.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-glacier-melt-with-space-technology">Tracking glacier melt with space technology</h2>



<p>While the Alps’ glaciers have been retreating since the Ice Age, their melting has significantly accelerated in recent decades. </p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.glamos.ch/en/#/E23-16" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Glacier Monitoring in Switzerland</a> (GLAMOS) program reveals a stark decline in glacial area within the Swiss Alps, where ice cover has shrunk from 1,311 km² (500 mi<sup>2</sup>) in 1973 to 961 km² (371 mi<sup>2</sup>) by 2016 - a loss of nearly 350 km² (130 mi<sup>2</sup>) in under 50 years.</p>



<p>This data is primarily derived from archival aerial and satellite imagery, such as NASA’s Landsat mission, which has been operational since 1972.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For instance, Landsat imagery of the Rhône Glacier in Switzerland shows dramatic reductions in ice cover between August 2001 and August 2024.</p>



<p>Moreover, advanced sensors like IceSAT-2/GLAS and radars aboard Sentinel-1 satellites are employed to detect glacier movement and mass changes. </p>



<p>These tools allow researchers to quantify the impact of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-people-fear-climate-change-will-end-the-world-during-their-lifetime/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> on glaciers with unprecedented accuracy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-melting-glaciers-shift-national-borders">Melting glaciers shift national borders</h2>



<p>The ecological impacts of glacier melt are well-documented, but its geopolitical ramifications are equally significant. In Europe, where many national borders align with watershed lines along high mountain ridges, shifting glaciers are redrawing maps.</p>



<p>One notable example involves the borders between Italy, Switzerland, and Austria. As glaciers recede or peaks collapse, these natural boundaries shift. </p>



<p>In 2006, Italy and Austria preemptively signed an agreement to accommodate potential border changes. Similarly, the Matterhorn Glacier’s retreat in 2024 slightly expanded Switzerland’s territory by shifting the mountain’s highest point closer to Italy.</p>

<p>In Switzerland, villages near glaciers depend heavily on tourism, which is closely tied to these natural wonders. </p>



<p>Visitors flock to witness these majestic ice formations, thus fueling local economies. However, as glaciers shrink, these communities face economic uncertainty.</p>



<p>Some regions have resorted to innovative measures to slow glacial melting, such as covering glaciers with reflective geotextiles to reduce heat absorption. </p>



<p>While effective in the short term, such localized efforts are insufficient to counter the broader trends of global warming.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-retreat-of-europe-s-glaciers">The retreat of Europe's glaciers </h2>



<p>The rapid melting of glaciers highlights the urgency of coordinated global efforts to combat climate change. The retreat of Europe’s glaciers affects everything from freshwater resources to national borders and economic stability. </p>



<p>As Buslavičiūtė and Jukna from <a href="https://www.vu.lt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vilnius University</a> emphasize, addressing these challenges requires long-term, global strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change’s impact on vulnerable regions like the Alps.</p>



<p>In the face of these monumental changes, space-based technology offers hope by providing accurate data to inform policies and strategies. </p>



<p>However, without immediate and sustained international action, the landscapes and borders shaped by glaciers over millennia may become unrecognizable within our lifetime.</p>

<p>Archaeologists working on a busy route in <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Cambridgeshire" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cambridgeshire</a> have come across a stone coffin dating back more than a thousand years. This massive artifact was featured on BBC’s "Digging for Britain." </p>



<p>The show aired January 7th on BBC2, and many people were eager to learn more about this unusual discovery in the middle of a routine road-widening project.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unearthing-history-in-plain-sight">Unearthing history in plain sight</h2>



<p>An excavation team found the coffin, which weighs about 1,650 lbs (750 kg), during road improvements on the A47 in Cambridgeshire.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The site sits along what was once an important <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-reveals-that-ancient-rome-smelled-like-patchouli/">Roman</a> route that linked significant centers. This stone burial piece had remained untouched for centuries, and offers a glimpse of how people were buried in the later stages of Roman Britain.</p>



<p><a href="https://headlandarchaeology.com/about-us/key-people/people/david-harrison/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">David Harrison</a> from Headland Archaeology said it was “a fascinating find.” Headland Archaeology is one of the organizations working closely with National Highways to identify and protect historic evidence when new roads are built.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The discovery has raised excitement among experts, who see this as one more clue about day-to-day life and traditions during the Roman period.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protecting-heritage-through-teamwork">Protecting heritage through teamwork</h2>



<p>Construction teams collaborated with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/archaeologists-uncover-5000-year-old-royal-tomb-that-is-18-feet-long/">archaeologists</a> for seven months, and enlisted help from 52 specialists and 20 civil engineers at 14 spots along this portion of the A47.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The large-scale effort also involved experts from the <a href="https://www.mola.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Museum of London Archaeology</a> (MOLA), <a href="https://yorkarchaeology.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">York Archaeology</a>, <a href="https://heritage360.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Heritage 360</a>, and <a href="https://clivedenconservation.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Clivedon Conservation</a>. Each group contributed specific skills to ensure the safe handling and thorough documentation of sensitive artifacts.</p>



<p>Chris Griffin, who directs the National Highways program in the east region, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-cambridgeshire-63546293" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">explained</a> that their primary goal is improving travel, yet occasional surprises come with the job.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“While our main focus has been on building a road to improve journeys for road users, it’s been extremely satisfying to play a part in uncovering such an unusual archaeological find,” he remarked.&nbsp;</p>



<p>His organization has a system in place to record, safeguard, and eventually share heritage items with local communities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-blending-modern-roads-with-ancient-stories">Blending modern roads with ancient stories</h2>



<p>The route in Cambridgeshire was once a vital track for travelers, traders, and soldiers moving across the area under Roman rule. Historians note that coffins carved from stone were relatively rare in that period, suggesting this burial may have been intended for someone of status.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The process of carefully extracting the coffin required an engineering strategy to preserve the carving and any objects that might remain inside.</p>



<p>Archaeologists believe the coffin’s placement near a Roman cemetery speaks to established community practices in the region. There were social customs around grave goods, coffin materials, and site layouts that varied between urban and rural areas.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This find hints that the settlement along the A47 held importance, possibly due to its connection with travel routes that branched out across Roman Britain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-supporting-local-interest-and-education">Supporting local interest and education</h2>



<p>National Highways works with professional teams to protect remarkable items that surface during <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/adding-coffee-grounds-during-the-construction-process-could-reinforce-buildings/">construction</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Archaeology belongs to the communities we serve and by working alongside Headland Archaeology, we are delighted to be able to conserve and protect this incredible find for future generations,” said Griffin.</p>



<p>The approach benefits regional museums and universities that rely on new information to broaden what we know about ancient societies.</p>



<p>“Its careful excavation and recording, both in the field and the laboratory, [that] allows us to continue to learn how our Roman ancestors lived and died,”&nbsp;David Harrison <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b014hl0d" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">added</a> </p>



<p>Specialists at MOLA and other heritage institutions will analyze fragments and items from the site to understand construction methods, potential funerary offerings, and any remains that might shed light on health conditions of that era.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-standing-out-among-roman-finds">Standing out among Roman finds</h2>



<p>Researchers say that an intact coffin of this size stands apart from other burials in the region. Scholars of Roman Britain point out that many cemeteries from the third and fourth centuries lacked elaborate markers, so stone coffins offer rare physical proof of local customs.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In some places, wooden coffins or simpler internments were more common. Stone burials sometimes contained personal belongings or other grave goods, giving scholars a deeper understanding of how people valued life and memory.</p>



<p>Even as road construction picks back up, workers remain alert for more relics. In addition to this coffin, National Highways has encountered smaller artifacts in Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Gloucestershire, and Essex. </p>



<p>Each piece enriches the story of past eras and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/happiness-beyond-wealth-some-communities-find-joy-in-simplicity/">local communities</a>. Many of these highlights will be presented in upcoming instalments of BBC’s Digging for Britain.</p>

<p>Scientists have used these field seasons to observe and collect data on the behaviors of whale sharks, hoping to uncover patterns that would illuminate everything from feeding habits to potential <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fascinating-mating-behaviors-of-leopard-seals-revealed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mating rituals</a>.</p>



<p>During the 2024 expedition, a research team documented a mature male whale shark engaging in what appeared to be following and biting behaviors toward a smaller female shark.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Although it remains unclear if this encounter culminated in mating, the new observations provide a rare glimpse into the courtship interactions of these elusive giants.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-first-hand-accounts-of-unusual-behavior">First-hand accounts of unusual behavior</h2>



<p>“Following and biting are common copulation behaviours in other species within the subclass of cartilaginous fish that the whale shark belongs to,” explained PhD candidate Christine Barry, a member of <a href="https://www.murdoch.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Murdoch University</a>’s Harry Butler Institute and the <a href="https://www.aims.gov.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Australian Institute of Marine Science</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Barry and her colleagues noted that these behaviors have been observed in several other cartilaginous fish, including various shark species. Such actions typically denote an attempt by the male to stabilize or secure the female’s position during mating.</p>



<p>“This is also consistent with previous reports by fishers recounting behaviours they’d observed out on the water of sexually mature males towards females at different aggregation sites,” Barry added.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These anecdotes, now supported by direct evidence, add weight to the idea that whale sharks’ mating rituals may mirror those of other large sharks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-piecing-together-mating-clues">Piecing together mating clues</h2>



<p>The research team, led by Barry alongside Dr. Mark Meekan of the University of Western Australia, published their conclusions in the journal <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/marine-science/articles/10.3389/fmars.2024.1507072/full" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Frontiers in Marine Science</em></a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to Barry, it is unlikely that the encounter during this expedition resulted in a successful mating event. Nonetheless, the instance of following and biting strongly suggests that whale shark mating behavior follows a pattern akin to many other shark species.</p>



<p>By placing these newly documented behaviors in the broader context of whale shark biology, scientists can form hypotheses regarding the mating process of the species.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Additionally, the research group underscores that knowledge of how whale sharks court and reproduce can significantly boost conservation efforts, particularly as populations remain vulnerable.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-avoidance-behavior-by-female-whale-sharks">Avoidance behavior by female whale sharks </h2>



<p>Whale sharks, which can grow up to 12 meters or more in length, have a global distribution in warm temperate and tropical waters. Despite their widespread presence, many aggregation sites show an overwhelming number of males.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“At Ningaloo Reef, and many aggregation sites around the world, males outnumber females with a ratio of one female to three males,” Barry said. The reasons behind this imbalance have puzzled scientists for years.</p>



<p>“This could explain why female whale sharks may be avoiding aggregation sites. Particularly for juvenile female sharks, the energetic costs of unwanted attention from males could imply a reason for strong male biases,” Barry added.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Female whale sharks, particularly younger ones, might seek refuge in areas with fewer adult males to steer clear of the stress and energy demands associated with repeated courtship attempts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This avoidance behavior could be a crucial factor influencing whale shark population structures at various aggregation points.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-conservation">Implications for conservation</h2>



<p>One pressing question is what these findings mean for managing whale shark populations worldwide. As an endangered species, whale sharks already face numerous challenges, including interactions with fisheries, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/basking-sharks-are-exceptionally-vulnerable-to-ship-strikes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vessel strikes</a>, and habitat degradation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Understanding their mating behavior, including how males and females interact at aggregation sites, can aid biologists and policymakers in deciding how to protect critical habitats - such as identifying areas where females can avoid male-dominated gatherings.</p>

<p>By systematically gathering data and applying scientific methods, researchers can more accurately identify patterns and track changes in whale shark behavior over time.</p>

<p>This new information about potential mating interactions is just the latest in a series of findings by Christine Barry, Dr. Meekan, and other scientists at Murdoch University’s School of Environmental and Conservation Sciences and partner institutions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Their previous studies have covered topics ranging from the impact of tourism on whale shark well-being to prey dynamics in waters frequented by these fish.</p>



<p>Moving forward, the researchers intend to broaden their focus to include additional observational and genetic studies, in hopes of confirming how often such pre-mating behaviors occur and what leads to successful reproduction.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A recent study reveals that Americans who are 55 years of age and older now face an estimated 42% lifetime risk of developing dementia, surpassing older estimates by more than double.&nbsp;</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/preventing-dementia-scientists-say-three-factors-matter-most/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dementia</a>, which involves progressive declines in memory, concentration, and judgment, is expected to result in roughly 500,000 new cases in 2025, a figure set to climb to one million cases a year by 2060.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Researchers explain that this rise is closely linked to the aging U.S. population, along with additional risk factors such as genetic predisposition, high rates of hypertension and diabetes, obesity, poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and mental health challenges.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-previous-estimates-were-lower"><strong>Why previous estimates were lower</strong></h2>



<p>Researchers attribute prior underestimations to inconsistent documentation of dementia in health records and death certificates, inadequate monitoring of early-stage cases, and the underreporting of cases among racial minorities, who are disproportionately affected by the condition.</p>



<p>The findings stem from a large collaborative study funded by the <a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Institutes of Health,</a> conducted by <a href="https://nyulangone.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NYU Langone Health</a>, with contributions from <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Johns Hopkins University</a> and other institutions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research utilized data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Neurocognitive Study (ARIC-NCS), which has been tracking the vascular and cognitive health of nearly 16,000 participants since 1987. ARIC-NCS is noted for being the longest research effort focusing on cognition and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/green-environments-and-sidewalks-improve-heart-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heart health</a> in African-Americans.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gender-and-racial-disparities">Gender and racial disparities</h2>



<p>The study’s findings, published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-024-03340-9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Nature Medicine</em></a>, detail 3,252 dementia diagnoses among participants from 1987 to 2020, translating to a lifetime risk of 42% for middle-aged Americans. </p>



<p>The results indicate that men face a 35% risk, whereas women face a 48% risk - a difference primarily due to women’s longer average life expectancy. </p>



<p>The research also pinpoints higher dementia susceptibility among Black adults and among carriers of a particular APOE4 gene variant, recognized as a chief genetic risk factor for late-onset <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alzheimers-may-not-be-a-brain-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alzheimer’s disease</a>.</p>



<p>"The relative growth in new dementia cases was especially pronounced for Black adults. These results highlight the urgent need for policies that enhance healthy aging, with a focus on health equity," noted the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dramatic-rise-in-dementia-risk">Dramatic rise in dementia risk</h2>



<p>“Our study results forecast a dramatic rise in the burden from dementia in the United States over the coming decades, with one in two Americans expected to experience cognitive difficulties after age 55,” said Josef Coresh, who served as senior investigator on the research and is the founding director of the <a href="https://med.nyu.edu/departments-institutes/optimal-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Optimal Aging Institute</a> at NYU Langone.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Coresh noted that the increase in cases is partly tied to brain function decline starting in middle age, a growing number of Americans over 65, and longer average lifespans among women.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-concerns-linked-to-dementia-risk">Health concerns linked to dementia risk </h2>



<p>The study also reveals that the lifetime risk of dementia surpasses 50% for those reaching age 75. However, previous findings suggest that strategies for preventing heart disease - such as blood pressure control and diabetes prevention - could similarly help reduce <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/recreational-cannabis-use-protects-against-cognitive-decline/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cognitive decline</a>.</p>



<p>“The pending population boom in dementia cases poses significant challenges for health policymakers, in particular, who must refocus their efforts on strategies to minimize the severity of dementia cases, as well as plans to provide more health care services for those with dementia,” Coresh said.</p>



<p>Hearing loss is another critical concern tied to dementia risk, yet only about a third of older Americans experiencing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hearing-loss-linked-to-a-greater-risk-of-dementia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hearing loss</a> use hearing aids. Coresh advocates greater monitoring, expanded testing, and more affordable hearing aids to alleviate this issue.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-racial-disparities-and-broader-recommendations">Racial disparities and broader recommendations</h2>



<p>According to Coresh, far more resources are needed to address racial inequities in health care, noting that while dementia numbers among Caucasian individuals are expected to double over the next four decades, rates among Black individuals are expected to triple. </p>



<p>Health policies should heighten efforts in Black communities to improve childhood education and nutrition, which research has shown to be beneficial for delaying cognitive decline later in life.</p>



<p>Ultimately, these findings highlight the daunting challenges posed by dementia as Americans age, but they also suggest paths for intervention - through robust healthcare systems, preventative heart health measures, support for hearing care, and programs targeted at reducing social and racial inequities.</p>

<p>Smoking remains one of the most challenging habits to overcome, but new research suggests that rewards and incentives can provide the motivation needed to quit. </p>



<p>A recent study reveals that offering incentives not only helps individuals quit smoking but also sustains the results long after the rewards are no longer provided.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quitting-smoking-using-incentives">Quitting smoking using incentives</h2>



<p>The study was spearheaded by researchers from the University of East Anglia (<a href="https://www.uea.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UEA</a>), a respected academic institution with a keen interest in public health.</p>



<p>The research team decided to explore whether incentives could aid not just anyone, but specifically pregnant women in their journey to quit smoking.</p>



<p>Previous studies had hinted at the moderate efficacy of rewards in encouraging <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chemical-exposure-is-increasing-among-pregnant-women/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pregnant women</a> to part with their smoking habits. </p>



<p>However, this fresh piece of research indicates a stronger correlation.</p>



<p>According to the research, there’s now “high certainty evidence” that incentive programs can indeed be successful for pregnant women aiming to give up smoking.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rewards-a-powerful-ally-against-smoking">Rewards: A powerful ally against smoking</h2>



<p>Professor Caitlin Notley, of UEA’s <a href="https://www.uea.ac.uk/about/norwich-medical-school" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Norwich Medical School</a>, shares that smoking is globally recognized as a leading preventable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quitting-smoking-greatly-reduces-the-risk-of-deadly-cancers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cause of illness</a> and premature death.</p>



<p>“We wanted to find out if giving people rewards helps them to quit smoking in the long term,” she states.</p>



<p>“We are now very confident that incentives help people, and pregnant people, to quit smoking better than not offering incentives. The evidence also demonstrates that the effectiveness of incentives lasts even after rewards have stopped.”</p>



<p>The incentives in question include financial rewards such as cash, vouchers, or deposits given as encouragement and a reward for maintaining a smoke-free lifestyle.</p>



<p>Various initiatives implement these incentive schemes, from workplace programs to community organizations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-success-in-quitting-smoking">Long-term success in quitting smoking</h2>



<p>The broader research encompassed 48 studies and over 21,900 participants; all the research explored different reward schemes designed to help smokers quit.</p>



<p>The results, even after filtering out the lowest-quality trials, indicated that participants who received <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-does-the-brain-identify-rewards-and-punishments/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rewards</a> were more likely to maintain their smoke-free status six months or more into the trial.</p>



<p>For every 100 smokers who received a financial reward to quit, ten were likely to be successful and remain successful for six months or longer.  </p>



<p>This contrasted with only seven successful quitters out of 100 people who didn't receive financial incentives. The success rate even extended beyond the time when the rewards had ceased.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extra-effective-for-pregnant-women">Extra effective for pregnant women</h2>



<p>When it came to pregnant women, the rewards scheme showed even more promising results. </p>



<p>Women who were pregnant and received rewards had a higher likelihood of quitting smoking than those who didn’t. </p>



<p>This was observed both at the end of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-and-nicotine-use-during-pregnancy-linked-to-infant-mortality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pregnancy</a> and post-birth.</p>



<p>For every 100 pregnant women who received financial incentives, 13 were likely to successfully quit smoking for six months or longer. In comparison, only six out of 100 were successful if no financial incentive was given. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-incentive-size-has-little-impact-on-quitting-smoking">Incentive size has little impact on quitting smoking</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the amount of reward didn't seem to make a substantial difference. </p>



<p>The studies showed no noticeable variation between those that offered smaller amounts (less than 100 U.S. dollars) and those that offered larger ones (more than 700 US dollars).</p>



<p>However, the researchers noted that a fair comparison is difficult to make due to cultural differences in the value placed on money, as the studies were conducted in many different countries.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-smoking-during-pregnancy-a-double-edged-sword">Smoking during pregnancy: A double-edged sword</h2>



<p>Highlighting the importance of this study, Professor Linda Bauld, Director of the <a href="https://spectrum.ed.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SPECTRUM Research Consortium</a>, Co-Chair of the <a href="https://ash.org.uk/about/who-we-work-with/smoking-in-pregnancy-challenge-group" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Smoking in Pregnancy Challenge Group</a>, and study co-author, states that smoking during pregnancy is one of the leading causes of poor birth outcomes, including stillbirth and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-increases-miscarriage/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">miscarriage</a>.</p>



<p>"These findings show that financial incentives during pregnancy can more than double the chances of quitting smoking and that incentives are also effective for preventing women from relapsing to smoking postnatally," she notes.</p>



<p>Her sentiments are echoed by co-author Jamie Hartmann-Boyce, assistant professor of health policy and promotion from the <a href="https://www.umass.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Massachusetts Amherst</a>.</p>



<p>He emphasized the reluctance of people to use pharmacological interventions during pregnancy, thereby making alternative strategies such as incentives even more critical.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quitting-smoking-with-incentives">Quitting smoking with incentives</h2>



<p>Looking to the future, research will likely focus more on exploring the differences between trials offering low or high cash incentives and self-incentives, within a variety of smoking populations, especially in low- and middle-income countries where the burden of tobacco use remains high.</p>



<p>This compelling study was carried out collaboratively between UEA and esteemed institutions such as the <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oxford</a>, <a href="https://www.ed.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Edinburgh</a>, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.</p>



<p>The result? A breath of fresh air in the ongoing struggle against smoking.</p>

<p>We all know processed food isn't the best thing on the plate. But how do we navigate the confusing language of food labeling? A remarkable tool now helps consumers and policymakers understand the processing levels of over 50,000 different items.</p>



<p>Researchers from Mass General Brigham created this public database to promote informed food choices and advocate for better food regulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-processed-foods-the-basics">Understanding processed foods - the basics</h2>



<p>Processed foods are those that have been altered from their natural state in some way, usually to make them last longer or taste better. </p>



<p>This includes things like freezing vegetables, canning beans, or adding salt and sugar to bread. These changes can be pretty simple and often retain most of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-baby-food-isnt-nutritious-despite-what-the-label-says/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">original nutrients</a>. </p>



<p>For example, a jar of tomato sauce or a bag of roasted nuts are considered processed foods because they've been prepared or packaged, but they still contain ingredients you’d recognize and are generally healthy when eaten in moderation.</p>



<p>On the other hand, ultra-processed foods go through much more extensive manufacturing and contain ingredients you wouldn’t normally find in a home kitchen. </p>



<p>These foods often include artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, and other additives designed to enhance taste, texture, and shelf life. </p>



<p>Think of things like sugary cereals, sodas, packaged snacks, instant noodles, and frozen dinners. Ultra-processed foods are usually higher in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/high-fat-diets-cause-high-anxiety-through-changes-in-gut-bacteria/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">unhealthy fats</a>, sugars, and salt, and they tend to be lower in essential nutrients.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-processed-foods-dominate-grocery-shelves">Processed foods dominate grocery shelves</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ultra-processed-foods-make-our-bodies-age-faster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Highly and ultra-processed foods</a> make up a significant portion of what is available in most grocery stores.</p>



<p>While they may be convenient or taste appealing, research has linked diets high in these types of foods to serious health issues, including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.</p>



<p>Despite growing awareness about the risks associated with these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eating-ultra-processed-foods-makes-your-muscles-weaker-and-more-fragile/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">foods</a>, many shoppers struggle to determine how processed a particular food item is. </p>



<p>Ingredient labels and nutritional information can be overwhelming or unclear, making it difficult for the average consumer to make informed choices.</p>



<p>“There are a lot of mixed messages about what a person should eat. Our work aims to create a sort of translator to help people look at food information in a more digestible way,” said Dr. Giulia Menichetti, a lead researcher at <a href="https://www.brighamandwomens.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brigham and Women’s Hospital</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-grocerydb-simplifies-healthy-eating">GroceryDB simplifies healthy eating</h2>



<p>To address the challenge of understanding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/minimally-processed-foods-cost-more-offer-no-extra-nutrition/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food processing levels</a>, researchers applied machine learning to analyze detailed data from three major grocery retailers: <a href="https://www.target.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Target</a>, Whole Foods, and Walmart. </p>



<p>They examined ingredient lists, nutritional information, and pricing data to create a clear picture of the processing levels of various food items.</p>



<p>This effort led to the development of <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11177926/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GroceryDB</a>, a comprehensive database tool designed to empower consumers with easy-to-understand information about processed food ingredients.</p>



<p>GroceryDB provides each food item with a "processing score," which indicates the degree of processing involved in the production of the food.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-all-grocery-stores-are-the-same">Not all grocery stores are the same</h2>



<p>The researchers employed the FPro algorithm to analyze <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/health-risks-of-ultra-processed-foods-revealed-in-30-year-study/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food processing</a> levels across products from the three major grocery retailers. Their findings revealed that the majority of items available in these stores were classified as ultra-processed.</p>



<p>While <a href="https://www.wholefoodsmarket.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Whole Foods</a> stood out for offering a broader selection of minimally processed foods, Walmart and Target provided fewer options in this category. </p>



<p>For example, cereals at Whole Foods showed a wide range, spanning from minimally to ultra-processed. In contrast, all cereals available at <a href="https://www.walmart.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Walmart</a> and Target were categorized as highly processed.</p>



<p>This pattern extended beyond cereals to other product categories, including soups, milk substitutes, and cookies. Despite the apparent variety of brands and products on store shelves, the processing options remained strikingly limited. </p>



<p>These findings highlight the challenge consumers face when trying to access healthier, less-processed food options, even in stores that appear to offer significant variety.</p>



<p>“When people hear about the dangers of ultra-processed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ultra-processed-foods-are-harmful-to-nearly-every-part-of-the-body/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">foods</a>, they ask, ‘OK, what are the rules? How can we apply this knowledge?’” said Menichetti. “We are building tools to help people implement changes to their diet.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-enters-the-fight-against-processed-foods">AI enters the fight against processed foods</h2>



<p>This initiative demonstrates how artificial intelligence (AI) can play a transformative role in advancing public health. </p>



<p>By leveraging AI and data science, the research team created a scalable system for analyzing and categorizing the processing levels of food items.</p>



<p>The team plans to enhance this database further by incorporating geolocation data and temporal monitoring. </p>



<p>This expansion would provide insights into regional differences in food availability and how these variations influence social determinants of health, such as access to nutritious options.</p>



<p>“Most research activities in nutrition still depend on manual curation, but our study shows that artificial intelligence and data science can be used to scale up,” Menichetti emphasized. </p>



<p>The ultimate goal is to make this an internationally comparable, open-access resource to advance global nutrition security.</p>



<p>With the TrueFood database, consumers now have the tools to make better informed food choices and push for healthier options in their communities.</p>

<p>Astronomers have taken another step forward in their search for the universe’s most elusive titans: supermassive black holes. </p>



<p>Using multiple NASA telescopes, scientists have found a better estimate for the ratio of hidden to visible black holes, thus shedding more light on the enigmatic structures that lie at the heart of most galaxies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-searching-for-supermassive-black-holes">Searching for supermassive black holes</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-black-holes-become-supermassive/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Supermassive</a> black holes can weigh billions of times more than the Sun. However, many of these cosmic giants are hidden behind dense clouds of gas and dust, making them difficult to detect. </p>



<p>Researchers estimate that every large galaxy harbors a supermassive black hole at its center.</p>



<p>Yet, identifying the total population of these behemoths is challenging. Instead, scientists study smaller samples and extrapolate to the larger population.</p>



<p>The latest study, published in the <em>Astrophysical Journal</em>, revealed that about 35% of supermassive black holes are obscured by dense gas and dust that blocks even low-energy X-ray light.</p>



<p>This contrasts with earlier surveys that identified less than 15% as obscured. Scientists believe the true ratio may approach 50/50, a finding that could reshape theories about how galaxies and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/powerful-magnetic-fields-may-be-key-features-of-black-holes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black holes</a> grow together.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bright-monsters-in-the-dark">Bright monsters in the dark</h2>



<p>Supermassive black <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fastest-feeding-black-hole-found-in-the-early-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">holes</a> are completely dark because no light can escape their immense gravitational pull. However, the matter swirling around a black hole glows intensely.</p>



<p>As gas spirals closer to the black hole, the huge gravitational force heats it to extremely high temperatures. This causes the gas to shine so brightly that it can outshine all the stars in the galaxy.</p>



<p>Despite this brightness, the glow can be hidden if the black hole is surrounded by a thick ring of gas and dust, called a "torus." </p>



<p>The torus resembles a doughnut, with the bright center at its core. Whether we can see the black hole or not depends on the angle of this torus.</p>



<p>If we are looking straight into the doughnut hole, the bright emissions are visible. If we see it edge-on, the torus blocks most of the light, which means that the black hole is hidden. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-infrared-and-x-ray-telescopes">Infrared and X-ray telescopes</h2>



<p>To study these hidden black holes, NASA used data collected in 1983 by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (<a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/missions/infrared-astronomical-satellite-iras/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IRAS</a>). The IRAS detected infrared light, which is emitted by the heated gas in the torus, even when the black hole itself was obscured.</p>



<p>NASA’s <a href="https://www.nustar.caltech.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NuSTAR</a> telescope complemented this data by detecting high-energy X-rays that can penetrate the dense gas and dust.</p>



<p>Combining data from both telescopes allowed scientists to locate and study hidden <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hubble-finds-a-surge-of-black-holes-after-the-big-bang/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black holes</a> with much greater precision, and offered a clearer understanding of these cosmic giants.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-holes-and-galactic-evolution">Black holes and galactic evolution</h2>



<p>Supermassive black holes play a huge role in shaping how galaxies grow and change over time. When matter gets too close to a supermassive black hole, it spirals in and heats up, creating bright energy emissions that can influence the entire galaxy. </p>



<p>This intense energy can regulate the formation of new stars by either triggering it through shockwaves or suppressing it by blowing away the gas needed for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pillars-of-creation-new-3d-video-nasa-created-as-never-seen-before/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">star creation</a>. </p>



<p>Essentially, the black hole acts like a cosmic governor, controlling how busy or quiet the galaxy is in terms of star production.</p>



<p>Beyond just star formation, supermassive black holes also help shape the overall structure and behavior of their host galaxies. </p>



<p>They can launch <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/black-hole-jets-are-like-million-light-year-long-jedi-lightsabers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">powerful jets of particles and radiation</a> that stretch far beyond the galaxy’s core, impacting the surrounding environment. </p>



<p>These jets can heat up the gas in the galaxy, preventing it from cooling down and forming new stars, which influences the galaxy’s size and brightness. </p>



<p>Additionally, the interaction between the black hole and the galaxy can lead to the growth of the galaxy’s central bulge, making it more rounded and stable.</p>



<p>“If we didn’t have black holes, galaxies would be much larger,” noted <a href="https://www.southampton.ac.uk/people/5xd2nb/professor-poshak-gandhi" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Poshak Gandhi</a>, a coauthor of the study. “Without a supermassive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-evidence-suggests-that-dark-energy-comes-from-black-holes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black hole</a> in the Milky Way, there might be many more stars in the sky.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-any-of-this-matter">Why does any of this matter?</h2>



<p>This study demonstrates the lasting importance of data collected by telescopes, even decades after their initial operation. </p>



<p>By combining observations from multiple instruments that work across different wavelengths of light, scientists can uncover details that a single telescope alone might miss.</p>



<p>“It amazes me how useful IRAS and NuSTAR were for this project, especially despite IRAS being operational over 40 years ago,” said study lead author Peter Boorman of <a href="https://www.caltech.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Caltech</a>.</p>



<p>The IRAS provided critical infrared data, while the more modern NuSTAR telescope added complementary X-ray observations. Together, these tools created a fuller picture of hidden supermassive black holes.</p>

<p>A nationwide survey has shed light on how illness impacts the winter experiences of Americans. Conducted by Talker Research and commissioned by Zipfizz, the survey reveals a striking truth: most Americans spend less than half of their winter days feeling truly healthy.</p>



<p>The average winter month leaves many feeling unwell for the majority of the time. Respondents report being 100% fit for only 16 days each month. The study paints a clear picture of how winter's chilly grip affects both individual health and relationships.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-illness-and-health-struggles-in-winter-months">Illness and health struggles in winter months</h2>



<p>The survey uncovered that a lack of energy is the most widespread complaint during the winter months. It affects 58% of participants. Common cold symptoms follow, with 42% reporting coughing, 40% struggling with sore throats, and 38% battling congestion.</p>



<p>For many, these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-infectious-disease-landscape-is-changing-and-we-must-prepare/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ailments</a> are more than just physical inconveniences. They disrupt daily life, impacting work and social interactions.</p>



<p>“Winter’s a tough time of year and often busy, so feeling off-form can really hamper us,” said Marcela Kanalos, a spokesperson for Zipfizz. </p>



<p>“The results show many people are feeling less than their best for half of the season, and that takes its toll on our moods, energy, and overall enjoyment of life.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-illness-on-couples">Impact of illness on couples</h2>



<p>The survey also reveals how winter <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/social-isolation-and-loneliness-trigger-changes-in-blood-proteins/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">illness</a> affects relationships, particularly among couples. When one partner gets sick, it often leads to noticeable changes in behavior.</p>



<p>About one-third of respondents described their sick partner as "a baby," which suggests that some people might act needy or dramatic when unwell.</p>



<p>Other behaviors that annoyed respondents included stubbornness (25%), where the sick partner refuses to follow advice, and acting overly dramatic (23%) about their symptoms. Additionally, 22% of people reported that their partner completely denies being sick, ignoring their illness altogether.</p>



<p>The survey also pointed out that illness doesn't only affect the sick person. Partners and loved ones notice it too. Nearly one-third (29%) of people said they mix up the days of the week when sick. </p>



<p>Others (21%) reported getting into arguments with their partners or family members. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-odd-behaviors-when-sick">Odd behaviors when sick</h2>



<p>The survey on winter illnesses also revealed some unexpected behaviors from participants when they were sick. </p>

</ol>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-managing-winter-illness">Managing winter illness</h2>



<p>The survey also examined how Americans manage <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/health-threats-of-climate-change-have-hit-record-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">illness</a> and take proactive steps to prevent it. </p>



<p>The most common preventive measure is staying hydrated, with 80% of respondents emphasizing its importance. Other top strategies include taking vitamins and supplements (77%) and getting adequate rest (75%).</p>



<p>Once illness strikes, most Americans focus on recovery by prioritizing rest (61%), hydration (58%), and medication (46%).</p>



<p>“Taking little steps ahead of feeling sick in order to set yourself up well from a health perspective can make all the difference,” Kanalos said. “Just simply staying on top of your hydration can make or break your winter season.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preventing-winter-illnesses">Preventing winter illnesses</h2>



<p>Winter health struggles are common for many Americans, as the colder months often bring a variety of physical ailments, such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/long-flu-emerges-as-a-public-health-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">colds</a> and fatigue. </p>



<p>The survey highlights the impact these health issues have on both the body and personal relationships. Illness can make it harder to stay active and engaged, which affects daily routines and interactions with family or partners.</p>



<p>The good news is that there are steps people can take to manage their health better during winter. Simple measures like staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, and maintaining good nutrition can help reduce the effects of illness and make winter a little easier to handle. </p>



<p>By being proactive, people can keep themselves healthier, both physically and emotionally, throughout the season.</p>



<p>The study, conducted by <a href="https://talkerresearch.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Talker Research</a> and involving 2,000 Americans, sheds light on these common health challenges. It specifically examined the difficulties people face during the winter months and how they cope with them. </p>

<p>The team behind this discovery was led by Juan Olvido Perea-Garcia at <a href="https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Leiden University</a>. The researchers found that our eyes have a profound influence over how our attractiveness and generosity are perceived. </p>

<p>The results revealed that primates with&nbsp;larger pupils&nbsp;were consistently rated higher for qualities like cuteness, friendliness, and attractiveness. This showed that pupil size alone has a strong influence on how appealing or approachable the animals appeared.</p>

<p>Conversely, when the same bright irises were paired with&nbsp;constricted&nbsp;(smaller) pupils, the perceived cuteness dropped noticeably. This indicates that the combination of bright irises and large pupils creates the strongest positive emotional response.</p>



<p>On the other hand,&nbsp;dark irises, which tend to make it harder to distinguish pupil size, produced more neutral reactions. </p>



<p>This suggests that the visibility of the pupil is crucial in influencing how others perceive traits like friendliness and cuteness. The findings emphasize how even small changes in eye morphology can significantly affect emotional and social judgments.</p>

<p>When people think about glowing mushrooms, like the newly discovered species <em>Mycena crocata</em>, they often imagine tropical rainforests where such exotic wonders may be more commonly found. </p>



<p>However, bioluminescent fungi are not limited to tropical regions - they also live in unexpected places.</p>



<p>In Zurich, artists Heidy Baggenstos and Andreas Rudolf have dedicated more than ten years to studying and showcasing these glowing organisms. </p>



<p>Their work highlights the beauty and presence of bioluminescent fungi close to home, and proves that extraordinary natural phenomena can be found even in familiar surroundings.</p>



<p>"We want to show that these bioluminescent mushrooms are present in Swiss forests and that we do not have to travel far to find them," said Baggenstos.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mycena-crocata-glowing-mushrooms"><em>Mycena crocata</em> - glowing mushrooms</h2>



<p>One evening, while exploring a forest in Zurich’s Albisrieden neighborhood, the duo spotted green light through their camera. </p>



<p>"Nowadays we always have our mobile phones or a flashlight, but to see bioluminescence in the forest, it has to be pitch black," Rudolf explained.</p>



<p>Initially, they believed the glowing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fungi-can-think-and-make-smart-decisions-without-a-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fungi</a> to be <em>Mycena haematopus</em>. Upon closer investigation in their studio, however, they identified it as <em>Mycena crocata</em>, the saffron drop bonnet mushroom. </p>



<p>This species, known for its saffron-colored milk, had never been described as bioluminescent before.</p>



<p>The artists documented their findings with photographs and light measurements, uncovering this hidden brilliance. </p>



<p>In darkness, the mycelium - the underground network of the mushroom - emits a green glow that even causes decaying wood to light up.</p>



<p>Under ideal conditions, their cultivated mycelia glowed for 164 days.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-crossing-art-and-science">Crossing art and science</h2>



<p>Collaborating with mycologist Renate Heinzelmann from the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow, and Landscape Research (<a href="https://www.wsl.ch/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WSL</a>), the artists published their discovery in&nbsp;<em>Mycoscience</em>. </p>



<p>"Most of the experiments were conducted by the artists. They collected the samples, took the photographs, and made the light measurements," Heinzelmann said, praising their dedication.</p>



<p>Through their research, the artists discovered that the fruiting body (the mushroom itself) of <em>Mycena crocata</em> emits little to no light. </p>

<p>Instead, the underground mycelium - the root-like network of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-all-fungi-matter-not-just-mushrooms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fungus</a> - is the primary source of its bioluminescence.</p>



<p>This glowing mycelium is capable of lighting up the decaying wood it grows on. When the wood is split open in the dark, it emits a green glow, which can last for up to four hours before gradually fading as the wood dries. </p>



<p>This fascinating discovery highlights how the less-visible parts of fungi can hold some of their most extraordinary features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mystery-of-glowing-fungi">Mystery of glowing fungi</h2>



<p>Bioluminescence in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-and-fungi-communicate-using-a-silent-language/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fungi</a> happens because of a chemical reaction. A substance called&nbsp;luciferin&nbsp;reacts with an enzyme called&nbsp;luciferase. </p>



<p>This reaction creates an unstable product that gives off energy as light, allowing the fungi to glow. Unlike other glowing effects like fluorescence, this process doesn’t need light or energy from outside sources; it happens naturally within the fungi.</p>



<p>Although scientists know how this reaction works, they are still unsure why fungi glow. One idea is that the light attracts insects, which might help spread the fungal spores.</p>



<p>However, this doesn’t fully explain the glow of the mycelium, which is hidden underground and doesn’t interact with insects. This mystery suggests there might be another, as yet unknown reason for fungal bioluminescence.</p>



<p>"It seems that bioluminescence has been maintained for a long time, so we assume it has some function," Heinzelmann says. "But it's still a mystery."</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-triton-cockatoo-s-distinct-identity">Triton cockatoo’s distinct identity</h2>



<p>In a surprising turn of events, the research led to the confirmation of the Triton cockatoo as a distinct species, after a century of confusion.</p>



<p>The Triton and the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cockatoos-learn-by-copying-others/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sulphur-crested cockatoos</a>, due to their uncanny resemblance, were believed to be a single species occupying Australia and New Guinea.</p>



<p>The new study has clarified that the Triton cockatoo is unique to the majority of New Guinea, while the sulphur-crested cockatoo is prevalent in Australia and a minuscule portion of southern New Guinea.</p>



<p>"Introducing the wrong species in the wrong place could jeopardize their long-term survival in the wild through hybridization or competition between the Triton cockatoo and the sulphur-crested cockatoo, potentially even disrupting ecosystems in the long term," noted Dr. Arthur Sands, the study's principal author.</p>



<p>He emphasized the need for reintroduction plans to be based on genetic information to avert such costly mistakes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-museomics-and-the-yellow-crested-cockatoo">Museomics and the yellow-crested cockatoo</h2>



<p>The second part of the study focused on the critically endangered yellow-crested cockatoo.</p>



<p>Using a novel approach called "museomics," the researchers identified three genetically distinct groups across the Wallacean region. In the process, they drew on DNA from 100-year-old museum specimens. </p>



<p>This approach enables scientists to gather critical biological data without disturbing endangered <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-wildlife-day-using-technology-to-protect-our-natural-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildlife</a>.</p>



<p>Based on the analysis, the researchers broadened their understanding of the genetic makeup of the yellow-crested cockatoo. The results also raised some intriguing questions about the cockatoo's evolution, distribution and conservation.</p>



<p>"One of the benefits of museomics is the ability to examine genetic data from taxa that are extinct, rare or inaccessible. In this case, it provides valuable information to inform conservation efforts, such as translocation, genetic rescue and breeding - steps that are crucial to avoid global extinction of&nbsp;<em>C. sulphurea</em>," noted Dr. Astrid Andersson, who led the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cockatoo-conservation-relies-on-genetic-research">Cockatoo conservation relies on genetic research</h2>



<p>At the heart of these advanced studies is a simple truth: understanding the uniqueness of each creature is vital for their survival.</p>



<p>"Accurate identification of evolutionarily significant units and species is essential for the effective management and conservation of rare and threatened species," said study co-author Professor Juha Merilä.</p>



<p>"Our research highlights the genetic diversity within and among these iconic cockatoo species and highlights the importance of incorporating genetic data into conservation planning."</p>



<p>As we tread deeper into the 21st century, embracing such a refined approach towards conservation could be our best bet at preserving the planet’s diversity.</p>



<p>Without accurate genetic considerations, re-wilding initiatives and translocations could have harmful consequences, concluded the researchers.</p>

<p>The experts have uncovered why cancer cells respond differently to radiotherapy, with some cells dying in ways that alert the immune system and others dying silently.</p>



<p>This difference is linked to how cancer cells repair DNA damage caused by radiation.</p>



<p>The research, led by Dr. Radoslaw Szmyd and Professor Tony Cesare, sheds light on the role of DNA repair in determining how cancer cells respond to radiotherapy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mystery-of-cancer-cell-death">Mystery of cancer cell death</h2>



<p>Radiation therapy is an essential tool for treating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/light-activated-molecules-kill-cancer-cells-with-precision/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cancer</a>, as it works by killing cancer cells. However, scientists have long been perplexed by a puzzling phenomenon: even within the same tumor, radiation causes cells to die in different ways.</p>



<p>This difference matters because the type of cell death determines whether the immune system notices and responds. </p>



<p>Some cancer cell deaths go undetected by the immune system, meaning no further immune action is triggered. On the other hand, certain types of cell death activate the immune system, prompting it to attack remaining cancer cells.</p>



<p>Understanding why these variations occur is critical to improving <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microscopic-discovery-reveals-how-cancer-cells-grow-faster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cancer</a> treatment. If scientists can harness the immune-activating forms of cell death, they can enhance the effectiveness of radiation therapy by combining it with immunotherapy. </p>



<p>This combination could lead to more powerful treatments that not only kill cancer cells but also help the body recognize and destroy any remaining cancer.</p>



<p>“Our research reveals that DNA repair, typically a protective mechanism, determines how cancer cells die after radiotherapy,” explained Professor Cesare from the <a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sydney</a>. </p>



<p>“When radiation damages DNA, cells use various repair processes. These processes dictate whether the immune system recognizes the cancer cells.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unnoticed-cancer-cell-deaths-weaken-treatment">Unnoticed cancer cell deaths weaken treatment</h2>



<p>The study revealed that how cancer cells repair DNA damage caused by radiation affects how they die. When <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ketogenic-diet-may-help-the-body-kill-cancer-cells/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cancer</a> cells use a DNA repair process called homologous recombination, they die during cell division. However, this type of death doesn’t alert the immune system, allowing the cancer to stay under the radar.</p>



<p>In contrast, when cells use other DNA repair pathways, they release byproducts that resemble a viral or bacterial infection. These byproducts signal the immune system to respond, enabling it to recognize and attack remaining cancer cells.</p>



<p>The researchers discovered that blocking homologous recombination changes the way cancer cells die. Instead of dying silently, they now die in a way that activates the immune system. This finding could pave the way for combining radiotherapy with drugs that inhibit homologous recombination.</p>



<p>This approach would boost the immune response, making radiotherapy more effective at destroying cancer and reducing the chances of recurrence.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-decades-old-question-answered">A decades-old question answered</h2>



<p>“Live imaging allowed us to observe the complexity of outcomes following radiation therapy,” said Professor Cesare. “This technology was critical in solving the puzzle.”</p>



<p>Professor Harriet Gee, co-project lead, emphasized the clinical significance of these findings.</p>



<p>“We discovered that tumor cell death after radiotherapy depends on specific DNA repair pathways. This insight allows us to combine radiotherapy with immunotherapy to increase cure rates.”</p>



<p>Dr. Szmyd dedicated six years to this remarkable research. “The perseverance required for such a project is incredible. Knowing this discovery could improve cancer patients’ lives is deeply rewarding,” noted Professor Cesare.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet <em>Archaeopteris</em>: the first modern tree</h2>



<p>The star of this ancient forest is <em>Archaeopteris</em> – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur <em>Archaeopteryx</em>. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.</p>



<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-today-s-climate">Lessons for today's climate</h2>

And that's true no matter what class of molecules you look at."</p>



<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cellular-changes-and-microbiome-shifts">Cellular changes and microbiome shifts</h2>



<p>The Stanford research revealed that these aging bursts affect our microbiome – the trillions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi living in and on our bodies. <p>Additionally, researchers found that protein production and gene expression begin to fall out of sync as we age. <p>Snyder emphasized the importance of proactive health measures. "I'm a big believer that we should try to adjust our lifestyles while we're still healthy," he noted. This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>As aging understanding evolves, one thing becomes clear: aging isn't inevitable decline, but specific biological events we may learn to prevent or reverse. The key is recognizing when these transitions occur and taking proactive health steps during vulnerable periods.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-discovery-in-the-brain">Breakthrough discovery in the brain</h2>

<p>What we call "tickling" is two completely different phenomena, according to the latest research. Light tickling – that feathery sensation that makes you want to scratch – is essentially your body's sophisticated bug detection system. This alerts you to potential insects or parasites on your skin.</p>



<p>Deep tickling – the kind that makes you laugh uncontrollably – involves complex brain circuits and is fundamentally social. You literally cannot tickle yourself with this type of stimulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-self-tickling-is-impossible">Why self-tickling is impossible</h2>



<p>Your cerebellum acts like a prediction machine, recent findings show. When you move your own hand to touch yourself, your brain generates precise predictions about what you will feel and then cancels out the tickling sensation through neural inhibition.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
