<p>For half a century, black hole fireworks have lived mostly in theory. The standard picture holds that if black holes ever “explode,” it’s vanishingly rare - maybe once every 100,000 years somewhere in the universe - and far beyond our reach to witness.</p>



<p>A new analysis flips that expectation on its head. Physicists at the <a href="https://www.umass.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Massachusetts Amherst</a> argue there’s better than a nine-in-ten chance that an observable black hole outburst will occur in the next ten years. </p>



<p>The team noted that our existing array of space- and ground-based telescopes is already capable of seeing it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-holes-that-can-explode">Black holes that can explode</h2>



<p>The scenario hinges on a particular class of black hole first proposed by Stephen Hawking in 1970: <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/primordial-black-holes-may-be-shifting-earths-orbit/">primordial black holes</a> (PBHs).</p>



<p>Unlike their heavyweight cousins born from the deaths of massive stars, PBHs could have formed in the first fractions of a second after the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/if-the-big-bang-theory-is-correct-what-exactly-happened/">Big Bang</a>. During that time, extreme density ripples compressed pockets of the early universe.</p>



<p>Crucially, a PBH can be far lighter than a stellar black hole. And the lighter a black hole is, the hotter it becomes, slowly bleeding energy as particles via Hawking radiation. </p>



<p>As it shrinks, it heats up even more in a runaway process that ends in a final, brilliant outburst. This outburst is a flash of particles and high-energy light that, in principle, we can detect.</p>



<p>That last part has been the sticking point. If PBHs exist, why haven’t we seen one go off? The prevailing wisdom has been that the odds are simply too small on human timescales.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-small-twist-with-big-consequences">Small twist with big consequences</h2>



<p>The UMass Amherst team revisited one of the field’s quiet assumptions: that primordial black holes carry no electric charge. </p>



<p>In their work, they explore a “dark QED” toy model - an analog of electromagnetism that includes a very heavy, hypothetical cousin of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shape-of-electrons-revealed-first-time-through-big-advance-in-quantum-physics/">electron</a>, sometimes called a dark electron.</p>



<p>If PBHs formed with even a tiny amount of this dark electric charge, the researchers show, the charge could temporarily stabilize the black hole’s evaporation. That pause delays the finale, so more PBHs would be reaching their terminal phase now. </p>



<p>With all current experimental constraints folded in, their calculations shift the expected cadence of observable PBH explosions from “about once every hundred millennia” to “roughly once per decade.”</p>



<p>“We’re not claiming it’s guaranteed, but the probability may be as high as 90% that one occurs within the next ten years," said Baker.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-catching-an-exploding-black-hole">Catching an exploding black hole</h2>



<p>If a PBH is in its endgame, it should spew a burst of Hawking radiation: a short-lived cascade of particles and photons across a broad energy range. That signature is exactly the kind of high-energy transient today’s observatories are built to chase.</p>



<p>Space telescopes sensitive to gamma rays and X-rays, wide-field optical surveyors scanning the sky nightly, and radio arrays listening for fleeting bursts could all contribute to catching - and confirming - the event. </p>



<p>Because only lightweight primordial black holes can explode today, detecting Hawking radiation would be tantamount to detecting a PBH.</p>



<p>The team’s message is simple: prepare the observing playbook now. Coordinated triggers, rapid follow-up, and cross-checks across wavelengths could turn a single flash into a definitive detection.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-detection-would-rewrite-the-textbooks">Detection would rewrite the textbooks</h2>



<p>Seeing a PBH explode would do more than check a box next to Hawking’s most famous prediction. It would provide the first direct evidence that black holes radiate and evaporate, lifting a key idea out of the realm of theory and into observation.</p>



<p>It would also prove PBHs exist at all - and that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-capture-baby-pictures-of-the-very-early-universe-cosmic-microwave-background/">infant universe</a> could seed gravitational monsters without stars. Perhaps most tantalizing, the debris of that final flash would act like a cosmic census. </p>



<p>In principle, the particle spray encodes every constituent of nature that couples to gravity and can be thermally produced. These include familiar residents like electrons and quarks, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/higgs-boson-god-particle-still-remains-quantum-mystery-after-12-years/">Higgs boson</a>, any dark matter particles if they exist, and potentially species we’ve never seen.</p>



<p>A single well-observed event could offer a once-only inventory of the universe’s building blocks, informing everything from particle physics to cosmology.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bold-claims-big-stakes">Bold claims, big stakes</h2>



<p>Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence. The group’s “dark QED” setup is intentionally simple, and the true microphysics of any dark sector - if it exists - could differ.</p>



<p>Still, the work highlights how modest changes to long-held assumptions can dramatically alter expectations for what we might observe. </p>



<p>It also underscores an opportunity: even if the odds are lower than the headline number, the payoff of a detection is so immense that it makes sense to plan for it.</p>



<p>We already know how to look. We already have the tools. If nature obliges, the next decade could deliver a brief, brilliant flash that confirms Hawking radiation, reveals <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/directly-detecting-dark-matter-primordial-black-holes-simple-as-monitoring-mars-orbit/">primordial black holes</a>, and hands physicists a ledger of the universe’s particles - all in one cosmic firework.</p>

<p>Typically safeguarded by the blood-brain barrier, the brain appears unusually susceptible to these persistent chemicals. Investigating this perplexing vulnerability, a team of researchers from the University at Buffalo has uncovered a vital piece of the puzzle.</p>



<p>"Our findings indicate these genes may be markers to detect and monitor PFAS-induced neurotoxicity in the future," explained study co-author Dr. G. Ekin Atilla-Gokcumen.</p>



<p>The research, published in the journal <em>ACS Chemical Neuroscience</em>, represents a critical step toward deciphering the mysteries of PFAS-related health effects.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-response-of-brain-cells-to-forever-chemicals">Response of brain cells to forever chemicals </h2>



<p>The study demonstrates that some genes show consistent changes when <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forever-chemicals-found-in-tap-and-bottled-water-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exposed to PFAS</a>, regardless of the specific chemical compound. Among these, genes crucial for neuron survival tend to exhibit reduced activity - potentially weakening their protective functions in the brain.</p>



<p>At the same time, genes linked to cell death become more active, which could increase the risk of neuronal damage or dysfunction. This opposing effect highlights how forever chemicals may disrupt essential brain functions and contribute to long-term neurological harm.</p>



<p>While the researchers identified 11 genes with consistent responses, they also found that hundreds of other genes react differently depending on the specific type of PFAS. This variability suggests that each PFAS compound, despite having some shared chemical properties, interacts uniquely with biological systems.</p>



<p>"PFAS, despite sharing certain chemical characteristics, come in different shapes and sizes, leading to variability in their biological effects," noted study co-author Dr. Diana Aga.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pfoa-a-notable-offender">PFOA: A notable offender</h2>



<p>Among the six PFAS compounds studied, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) - previously used in nonstick cookware - stood out for its dramatic impact.</p>



<p>PFOA altered the expression of nearly 600 genes, far more than any other compound tested. These changes affected pathways related to oxidative stress, protein synthesis, and neural function.</p>



<p>For instance, PFOA downregulated mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor, a protein crucial for neuron survival. At the same time, it up-regulated thioredoxin-interacting protein, which is linked to cell death. </p>



<p>"Each of these 11 genes exhibited consistent regulation across all <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dangerous-pfas-forever-chemicals-found-in-the-amazon-rainforest/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PFAS</a> that we tested," notes Atilla-Gokcumen. </p>



<p>"This uniform response suggests that they may serve as promising markers for assessing PFAS exposure, but further research is needed to know how these genes respond to other types of PFAS."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forever-chemicals-in-daily-life">Forever chemicals in daily life</h2>



<p>PFAS are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forever-chemicals-found-in-fitness-trackers-and-smartwatch-bands/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nearly everywhere</a> - in food packaging, firefighting foams, and even semiconductors. The widespread use of forever chemicals highlights the challenge of mitigating their impact on both the environment and brain health while maintaining their utility.</p>



<p>Short-chain PFAS, considered less persistent in the environment, show promise as alternatives. However, these substitutes may come with their own set of health risks and reduced effectiveness.</p>



<p>"If we understand why some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-source-water-exceeds-safe-drinking-limits-of-pfas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PFAS</a> are more harmful than others, we can prioritize phasing out the worst offenders while seeking safer substitutes," noted Dr. Atilla-Gokcumen. This nuanced approach could help balance industrial needs with environmental and human safety.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>

<p>The study was conducted by researchers at the <a href="https://nutrition.tufts.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy</a>.</p>



<p>The findings outline a grim pattern. The experts estimate that each year, 2.2 million new cases of type 2 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-diabetes-rate-has-doubled-reaching-over-800-million/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diabetes</a> and 1.2 million new cases of cardiovascular disease can be attributed to the consumption of sugary drinks.</p>

<p>The researchers discovered a particularly distressing scenario in developing countries. In Sub-Saharan Africa, for instance, over 21% of all new diabetes cases are linked to sugary drinks.</p>



<p>Furthermore, Latin America and the Caribbean report that nearly 24% of new diabetes cases and over 11% of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crucial-discoveries-will-improve-cardiovascular-disease-treatment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a> cases are related to sugary beverage consumption.</p>



<p>Countries like Colombia, Mexico, and South Africa bear a major brunt of this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antibiotic-resistance-could-cause-a-health-crisis-globally/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">health crisis</a>, with exceptionally high percentages of novel diabetes and cardiovascular diseases cases linked to sugar-sweetened beverages.</p>



<p>These countries, along with others, are in the throes of a largely avoidable public health crisis unleashed by the soaring consumption of beverages such as carbonated soda, energy drinks, and juices with added sugar. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-impacts-of-sugary-drinks">Health impacts of sugary drinks </h2>



<p>The experts noted that sugar-sweetened beverages, despite their fleeting pleasures, lead to a rapid rise in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/green-tea-extract-lowers-blood-sugar-and-improves-gut-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">blood sugar</a> levels while offering little nutritional value.</p>



<p>"High doses of rapidly digested glucose also activate insulin and other regulatory pathways, which can result in visceral fat production, hepatic and skeletal muscle insulin resistance and weight gain," noted the researchers.</p>



<p>Excess weight, insulin resistance, and various metabolic issues are the precursors to health problems like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sugary-drinks-gaining-more-popularity">Sugary drinks gaining more popularity</h2>



<p>Sadly, these detrimental drinks are fervently marketed and sold in low- and middle-income nations. </p>



<p>Dariush Mozaffarian, director of the Food is Medicine Institute at the Friedman School, pointed out that these communities aren't just consuming harmful products - they are also less equipped to handle the health fallout.</p>



<p>As countries progress and incomes rise, these sugary drinks gain more popularity, with men and younger adults being at a higher risk compared to women and older adults.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-curbing-sugary-drinks-for-global-health">Curbing sugary drinks for global health</h2>



<p>The urgency of the situation isn't lost on Laura Lara-Castor, the lead author of the study. "We need urgent, evidence-based interventions to curb consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages globally, before even more lives are shortened by their effects on diabetes and heart disease."</p>



<p>The team suggests multi-faceted countermeasures, proposing public health campaigns, sugary drink advertising regulations, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sugar-drink-taxes-dramatically-improve-overall-health-in-cities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages</a>. </p>



<p>There is already a positive precedent set by Mexico, where an implemented tax on sugary beverages seems to be effective in reducing consumption, especially among lower-income individuals.</p>



<p>Yet, as Mozaffarian emphasizes, there is much more to be done. "As a species, we need to address sugar-sweetened beverage consumption," especially in high-consumption regions like Latin America and Africa, where the health consequences are severe.</p>



<p>The global implications of sugary drink consumption loom large, representing a call to action for everyone - from health organizations to individuals.</p>

<p>Experts advocate for clearer labeling on sugary beverages to emphasize their impact on health through visual warnings or sugar content limits.</p>

<p>Marine bacteria roam our oceans in astonishing numbers, with prokaryotes ranking among the most abundant forms of life on Earth. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.95.12.6578" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Scientists</a> have long recognized the importance of these microbes in managing the ocean’s nutrient cycles, including those of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus. </p>



<p>They also regulate oxygen and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-based-carbon-dioxide-removal-may-not-be-effective/">carbon dioxide</a> exchange between water and air. Yet, even with advancing genomic technologies, numerous bacterial lineages remain unexplored.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Some appear only in certain regions, while others drift across the planet’s waters. Recent work has brought fresh attention to these bacterial players, prompting further research into how their varied capabilities affect marine ecosystems and global processes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unusual-life-beneath-the-surface">Unusual life beneath the surface</h2>



<p>Scientists examining seawater from <a href="https://www.st.nmfs.noaa.gov/copepod/time-series/es-30301/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Blanes Bay</a> in the north-western Mediterranean uncovered 26 new bacterial strains that represented 23 novel marine species and six distinct genera. Each strain shows particular traits, that offer clues about oceanic transformations that sustain life.</p>



<p>“Massive sequencing helps us understand bacterial communities as a whole,” said <a href="https://emm.icm.csic.es/xavier-rey-velasco/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">X. Rey Velasco</a> (ICM-CSIC).&nbsp;</p>



<p>These organisms were identified by analyzing cellular features and genetic data, and their discovery confirmed that ocean microbes remain a major frontier for research. </p>



<p>Their unusual profiles could explain processes behind nutrient turnover in coastal environments, highlighting how a small sample can yield remarkable diversity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-blanes-bay-advantage">The Blanes Bay advantage</h2>



<p>Blanes Bay hosts a permanent sampling station that lets researchers monitor microbial life during winter, spring, summer, and fall. Its convenient location about half a mile offshore in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/young-whales-epic-voyage-exposes-perils-of-the-mediterranean/">Mediterranean</a> allows consistent data collection throughout the year.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Observing the same site across different seasons provides a valuable view of changing conditions and microbial shifts. In a warmer month, for instance, certain bacteria may flourish, while cooler temperatures favor others.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This year-round approach captures fluctuations that shorter studies miss. The bay has become a central hub for oceanographic research because it reflects variations found in many temperate coastal waters.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-marine-bacteria-and-nutrient-cycles">Marine bacteria and nutrient cycles</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.1153213" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Marine microbes</a> handle the majority of the ocean’s respiration and serve as key agents in nutrient transformations. The newly described strains show different capacities linked to carbon fixation, nitrogen metabolism, and the processing of sulfur compounds.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Some appear adept at dealing with dissolved organic matter, turning it into particles that other organisms consume. Others reduce nitrogen levels in ways that can lessen the buildup of harmful compounds.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By mapping their genomic details, researchers revealed pathways that allow these bacteria to recycle essential elements. Such activities preserve the ecological balance in coastal zones, open waters, and even deeper layers of the sea.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-reach-confirmed">Global reach confirmed</h2>



<p>After isolating these strains, <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.1261359" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">investigators</a> compared their gene sequences to global datasets from projects like <a href="https://fondationtaraocean.org/en/home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tara Oceans</a>. </p>



<p>Several newly characterized species also appear in polar regions, subtropical belts, and temperate seas, hinting at wide-ranging ecological success. </p>



<p>Some members of the Flavobacteriaceae class are especially abundant, although a few groups occur in lower numbers. </p>



<p>Tracking the distribution of marine bacteria showed that these bacteria adapt to diverse conditions, whether near coastlines or further offshore. </p>



<p>Understanding how they survive in different settings may lead to discoveries about food web connections and resilience against environmental stress. This underscores their potential importance in oceanic processes worldwide.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-tribute-to-female-pioneers">A tribute to female pioneers</h2>



<p>In naming the new marine bacteria species, researchers honored several female microbiologists whose achievements shaped the way we investigate marine life today.</p>



<p>These individual’s had advanced knowledge about how microbes flourish in salty, nutrient-poor regions and how they respond to shifts in temperature or available carbon sources. </p>



<p>This choice challenges the historic trend of commemorating mostly male scientists. It also invites future generations of researchers to appreciate and build upon the contributions of women who shaped modern microbiology. </p>



<p>Other strains received labels inspired by local features, linking them to Blanes Bay’s particular conditions and cultural background.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-growing-scope-of-microbial-discovery">Growing scope of microbial discovery</h2>



<p>“Although Blanes Bay is possibly the most studied coastal marine ecosystem in the world from a microbiological point of view, we still discover new species and new aspects of its ecology every time we stop to look in detail,” commented <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=CdrBrtsAAAAJ&amp;hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Josep M. Gasol</a> (ICM).&nbsp;</p>



<p>Despite the attention Blanes Bay has received, new forms of marine life continue to be discovered. Scientists plan to investigate these unusual species under varied laboratory conditions, where they will be tested to determine their potential to use alternative energy sources or survive harsh circumstances. </p>



<p>This could clarify how ocean communities respond to climate shifts, pollution events, or changes in nutrient availability.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-microbes-can-tell-us-about-global-changes-in-the-ocean/">Culturing diverse bacteria</a> remains essential for refining lab experiments on their metabolism, interactions, and evolutionary paths. By bridging culture-based methods and large-scale DNA sequencing, researchers can learn more about how these organisms help regulate conditions in the water column.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings from Blanes Bay suggest that there is no end to the hidden complexity of marine microbes. Studying them not only broadens our grasp of microscopic life but may also yield clues about the ocean’s response to ongoing environmental changes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As data collection improves, so does the chance to predict how marine habitats will cope with tomorrow’s challenges.</p>

23 new marine bacteria species discovered that influence global ocean cycles

<p>Recreational activities on mountain trails are pushing large carnivores like grizzly bears and wolves away from their native habitats, even when those trails lie hundreds of meters from where the animals roam.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A new study from the <a href="https://www.ualberta.ca/en/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Alberta</a> highlights the need for improved land management practices that allow people and wildlife to peacefully coexist. </p>



<p>This issue is particularly pressing in the Bow River Valley, long recognized as a natural corridor linking the prairies to the Continental Divide.</p>



<p>Over the past 15 years, a team of researchers led by Peter Thompson set up camera traps at more than 1,600 sites in the Bow River Valley and surrounding areas. </p>



<p>These traps were in place between 2007 and 2022, capturing over a million images of humans and tens of thousands of images of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grizzly-bears-help-huckleberries-thrive-in-a-changing-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">grizzly bears</a> and wolves.</p>



<p>The scientists then used statistical models to assess the relationship between human activity and carnivore presence on the landscape.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-recreation-and-large-carnivores-nbsp">Human recreation and large carnivores&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Upon examining the images and activity patterns, the researchers discovered a significant disturbance effect from busy trails, extending far beyond the immediate path.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The results showed that wolves and bears did not merely avoid the immediate vicinity of high-traffic areas; they stayed away from locations hundreds of meters away as well.</p>



<p>Thompson, formerly a postdoctoral fellow with Colleen Cassady St. Clair in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta, is now a postdoctoral fellow at <a href="https://www.sfu.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Simon Fraser University</a>.</p>



<p>“We initially thought bears might use hiking trails as efficient routes when humans weren’t around, but they actually avoid these areas altogether,” said Thompson.</p>



<p>“Our results show that human recreation has significant effects on wildlife, substantially influencing their behaviour even hundreds of meters away from the trail.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-widespread-displacement-of-large-carnivores-nbsp">Widespread displacement of large carnivores&nbsp;</h2>



<p>For grizzly bears, half of the displacement effect from high-use trails remained in effect up to 300 meters from the trail. For wolves, this displacement was observed up to 600 meters away. Thompson noted that the phenomenon is considerably more extensive than was previously believed.</p>



<p>“When trails become busier, people may not realize the extent to which they are disrupting wildlife movement and habitat security,” Thompson added.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This finding demonstrates that outdoor enthusiasts using high-traffic trails, especially in popular regions, could unknowingly be displacing wolves and bears from substantial parts of their natural habitat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-effects-of-recreation-on-wolves-nbsp">Effects of recreation on wolves&nbsp;</h2>



<p>While grizzly bears are visibly impacted by busy trails, the displacement effect was even more pronounced for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gray-wolves-are-a-crucial-component-of-the-american-west/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wolves</a>. Their avoidance of human activity at distances of up to 600 meters likely relates to their year-round activity cycle, which intersects with winter recreation such as skiing and snowmobiling.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This further highlights how multiple forms of recreation can compound the stress on top predators.</p>



<p>“Wolves are even more affected by human recreation than grizzly bears, and they are active year-round, coinciding with winter recreational activities,” said St. Clair, Thompson’s former supervisor.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This research highlights the critical need to manage human use in a way that allows people to share the landscape with these wary predators.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mitigating-the-impacts-on-large-carnivores-nbsp">Mitigating the impacts on large carnivores&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The Bow River Valley is particularly significant for wildlife, functioning as a key passageway for many species.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Shifts in animal movement due to human traffic on trails could compromise the valley’s role as a corridor for genetic exchange and resource access.&nbsp;</p>



<p>If large carnivores are consistently deterred from these areas, the consequences could include altered feeding patterns, reduced breeding success, and changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/danger-zones-climate-change-is-altering-predator-prey-dynamics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">predator-prey dynamics</a>.</p>



<p>Land managers in this region may consider strategies such as creating buffer zones, limiting trail access during peak activity times, or issuing guidelines that reduce disturbance in critical wildlife areas.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Such steps might help maintain the valley’s ecological function and ensure that grizzlies, wolves, and other species can continue to move freely.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-need-for-thoughtful-recreation-planning">Need for thoughtful recreation planning</h2>



<p>The paper’s authors emphasize that as recreational use of mountain trails grows, the effects on wildlife will likewise increase.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Raising awareness about how trail use displaces animals, even far from the trail itself, could encourage more responsible behavior among outdoor enthusiasts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Measures such as seasonal trail closures, visitor education programs, and designated wildlife corridors could help minimize the disruption to grizzly bears, wolves, and other sensitive species.</p>



<p>The findings in the Bow River Valley also reflect broader challenges faced worldwide as conservation areas strive to balance human recreation with wildlife protection.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By taking preemptive steps - whether through trail design, user quotas, or educational outreach - policymakers and conservation managers can better safeguard critical habitats for large carnivores and foster a more harmonious coexistence between people and nature.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reevaluating-our-use-of-mountain-trails-nbsp">Reevaluating our use of mountain trails&nbsp;</h2>



<p>This study provides actionable insights into how recreational activities influence the distribution and well-being of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/apex-predators-can-help-restore-ecosystems-but-not-immediately/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">apex predators</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>With wolves and bears essential to ecosystem balance, preventing their displacement has ecological significance beyond individual species.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to Thompson, these results show that human recreation has significant effects on wildlife, and these findings are a call to reevaluate how we manage and use mountain trails.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Through careful planning and targeted conservation efforts, there is hope that humans and large carnivores can continue to share these magnificent landscapes for generations to come.</p>

<p>Antarctica, a land of extremes, hides a fascinating and potentially impactful geological secret beneath its ice. Known for its towering Mount Erebus and iconic lava lake, the continent also harbors over 100 lesser-known volcanoes. </p>



<p>Many of these lie buried beneath kilometers of ice, especially along Antarctica’s western coast.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-antarctica-s-hidden-volcanoes">Antarctica's hidden volcanoes</h2>



<p>Climate change is causing Antarctica's ice sheet to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-ice-sheet-patterns-point-to-rapid-melting-risks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">melt faster than before</a>, which is raising global sea levels. But the impact doesn’t stop with the oceans. </p>



<p>The ice sheet is incredibly heavy and presses down on the land beneath it. When the ice melts, the weight on the rocks below is reduced, a process scientists call&nbsp;"unloading."</p>



<p>This unloading has significant geological effects. The reduced pressure can increase the chances of volcanic eruptions.</p>



<p>Similar effects have been seen in other parts of the world, where melting glaciers and ice sheets have triggered increased volcanic activity.</p>



<p>In Antarctica, where many volcanoes lie buried under kilometers of ice, this unloading process could "awaken" these hidden volcanoes. Their eruptions could melt even more ice from beneath, amplifying the melting process in what scientists call a "feedback loop." </p>



<p>This means that as the ice melts, it could trigger volcanic eruptions that further accelerate the melting.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-melting-ice-and-subglacial-volcanoes">Melting ice and subglacial volcanoes</h2>



<p>A research team led by A. N. Coonin from <a href="https://www.brown.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brown University</a> used 4,000 computer simulations to study how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-ice-sheet-past-present-and-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">melting Antarctic ice</a> affects hidden volcanoes.</p>



<p>The results show that as the ice gradually melts, it can increase both how frequent and how powerful subglacial volcanic eruptions become.</p>



<p>This means that ice loss doesn’t just impact the surface - it also significantly affects Antarctica’s volcanoes deep below the Earth’s crust.</p>



<p>The phenomenon is linked to how magma chambers respond to changes in pressure. Magma chambers, located beneath the Earth's surface, hold molten rock under high pressure.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pressure-inside-of-magma-chambers">Pressure inside of magma chambers</h2>



<p>The massive weight of an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/turquets-octopus-dna-tells-scientists-that-west-antarctic-ice-sheet-collapse-is-close/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice sheet</a> above a magma chamber keeps the pressure stable. When the ice melts, the weight is reduced, and the pressure on the magma decreases.</p>



<p>As the pressure lifts, the magma can expand. This expansion puts stress on the walls of the magma chamber, making eruptions more likely. </p>



<p>To make matters more complex, many magma chambers contain gases, such as water vapor and carbon dioxide, dissolved in the magma under high pressure. When the pressure reduces - similar to opening a soda bottle - these gases escape in bubbles, rapidly increasing the pressure inside the chamber.</p>



<p>This added pressure from escaping gases and expanding magma increases the chances of an eruption. The process is further intensified in regions like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-will-the-antarctic-ice-sheet-collapse/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Antarctica</a>, where ice loss directly impacts the stability of these underground systems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-subglacial-eruptions">Impact of subglacial eruptions</h2>



<p>Subglacial volcanic eruptions rarely breach the surface, but their heat has significant consequences. They can intensify melting deep below the ice, weakening the ice sheet from within. </p>



<p>As discussed above, this weakening creates a feedback loop: as ice melts and pressure lessens, volcanic activity increases, which in turn accelerates ice melting.</p>



<p>The researchers emphasize that this is a slow process, unfolding over centuries. However, this slow feedback loop could persist even if humanity succeeds in curbing greenhouse gas emissions. </p>



<p>The process might have played a role in past volcano eruptions when Antarctica’s ice sheet was much thicker during the last ice age.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-interconnectedness-of-antarctica-s-volcanoes">Interconnectedness of Antarctica's volcanoes</h2>

They reveal how warming temperatures can initiate complex chain reactions deep within the Earth. </p>



<p>As the ice melts, it reduces pressure on underground magma systems, potentially triggering volcanic eruptions. These eruptions, in turn, can intensify ice melting, creating a self-reinforcing cycle.</p>



<p>Although this process unfolds over centuries, it serves as a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of Earth's systems. Geology and climate are not isolated - they influence each other in ways that can reshape the planet.</p>



<p>Understanding these hidden dynamics is essential as we address the long-term consequences of climate change. By studying these processes, we can better prepare for the challenges they may bring, even if their full effects seem distant today.</p>

<p>When we marvel at the wonders of nature - like the sweet aroma of spring roses, the melodies of songbirds, or the brilliant colors of autumn leaves - there's an unsung hero working quietly behind the scenes: the ozone layer.</p>



<p>This thin shield in the stratosphere protects Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation (UVR), safeguarding biodiversity and enabling life as we know it. </p>



<p>Yet, the formation of this vital layer took over 2 billion years, and recent research reveals why it faced such a prolonged delay.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-battle-of-elements-in-earth-s-early-ozone-layer">Battle of elements in Earth's early ozone layer</h2>



<p>A study led by experts at Yale University sheds light on an ancient atmospheric battle between iodine and oxygen.</p>



<p>This competition, the researchers propose, stalled the stabilization of the ozone layer, delaying the emergence and diversification of complex life on Earth.</p>



<p>“The origin and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-ozone-day-2024-advancing-climate-action/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diversification</a> of complex life on Earth remains one of the most profound and enduring questions in natural science,” said Jingjun Liu, the study's lead author. </p>



<p>The research challenges the long-held belief that evolutionary delays were purely due to time requirements, offering a fresh perspective on the role of atmospheric chemistry.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-did-complex-life-wait">Why did complex life wait?</h2>



<p>Despite cyanobacteria existing for 2.7 billion years, land plants did not appear until 450 million years ago. Similarly, complex life fossils are absent before the Cambrian era. </p>



<p>Traditionally, scientists attributed these delays to slow evolutionary <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfires-threaten-the-recovery-of-the-ozone-layer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">processes</a>.</p>



<p>“That notion fails to explain how and why complex life originated and diversified,” said Professor Noah Planavsky, senior author of the study.</p>



<p>The research suggests that the true culprit was iodine. Elevated marine iodine concentrations disrupted the formation of a stable ozone layer, allowing intense UV radiation to bombard the Earth’s surface. </p>



<p>This harsh environment made the planet inhospitable to complex terrestrial life for billions of years.</p>

<p>Ozone forms through a delicate interplay between atmospheric oxygen and UVR. While oxygen levels eventually rose, the study found that high marine iodide emissions - salts formed by iodine - prevented a protective ozone shield from stabilizing.</p>



<p>These emissions led to ozone destruction akin to the damage caused by chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) during the 20th-century Antarctic ozone hole crisis.</p>



<p>“Iodine-driven catalytic cycles for ozone destruction are kinetically much faster than those involving reactive chlorine,” explained Professor Planavsky.</p>



<p>As a result, even slight increases in marine iodine could have caused significant ozone depletion, exposing the Earth’s surface to harmful UVR for billions of years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-perspective-on-earth-s-history">New perspective on Earth’s history</h2>



<p>Liu and the research team from <a href="https://www.yale.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yale University</a> used geological evidence and ocean-atmosphere models to reconstruct iodine-ozone dynamics. </p>



<p>The findings reveal that unstable and low ozone levels likely persisted from 2.4 billion to 0.5 billion years ago. Even with high oxygen production, periodic UV radiation surges would have hindered the evolution of land-based life.</p>



<p>This remarkable research reshapes our understanding of Earth’s history, revealing how atmospheric chemistry influenced life’s timeline. As we continue to uncover the mysteries of our planet’s past, we deepen our appreciation for the delicate balance that sustains life today.</p>

<p>Jupiter has always fascinated stargazers with its colorful bands of clouds and iconic weather patterns like the Great Red Spot. Now, new research from a team of citizen scientists challenges the old idea that its visible clouds are formed of ammonia ice.</p>



<p>These findings add clarity to how Jupiter’s cloud layers and atmospheric dynamics work. They have also been published in the <em>Journal of Geophysical Research - Planets</em>.</p>



<p>Astronomy enthusiasts have followed Jupiter for many years, mapping its shifting features from backyards and observatories. </p>



<p>Reports of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jupiters-great-red-spot-shrinks-and-expands-like-a-stress-ball/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dramatic storms</a>, swirling vortexes, and bands of different hues have long intrigued experts and hobbyists alike. Yet the real composition of the planet’s most visible cloud layers remained unsettled.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fresh-eyes-on-jupiter-s-clouds">Fresh eyes on Jupiter's clouds</h2>



<p>A fresh approach emerged when amateur astronomer Dr Steven Hill, based in Colorado, studied <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-is-causing-the-mysterious-haze-at-jupiters-poles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jupiter’s atmosphere</a> with commercially available telescopes and colored filters. </p>



<p>By capturing images at specific wavelengths, he measured the abundance of ammonia and the height of cloud tops. His observations suggested that the clouds on Jupiter sit at depths too warm for ammonia ice to form.</p>



<p>Soon after, Professor Patrick Irwin from the University of Oxford’s <a href="https://www.physics.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Department of Physics</a> applied Dr Hill’s analytical approach to observations from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer at the European Southern Observatory’s <a href="https://www.eso.org/public/teles-instr/paranal-observatory/vlt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Very Large Telescope</a> in Chile. </p>



<p>Professor Irwin and his team simulated how light interacts with gases and clouds in a computer model. Their results confirmed that the main cloud layers are deeper than expected and unlikely to be ammonia ice clouds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-keeping-it-simple">Keeping it simple</h2>



<p>“I am astonished that such a simple method is able to probe so deep in the atmosphere and demonstrate so clearly that the main clouds cannot be pure ammonia ice!" Professor Irwin enthused.</p>



<p>"These results show that an innovative amateur using a modern camera and special filters can open a new window on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jupiters-storms-can-last-for-years-but-what-fuels-them/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jupiter’s atmosphere</a> and contribute to understanding the nature of Jupiter’s long-mysterious clouds and how the atmosphere circulates.”</p>



<p>Dr Hill’s straightforward techniques uncovered a more detailed picture of Jupiter’s weather. By examining small differences in brightness through narrow color filters, he produced ammonia maps that cost much less to calculate than complex modeling. </p>



<p>“I always like to push my observations to see what physical measurements I can make with modest, commercial equipment," Dr. Hill explained, with great enthusiasm. </p>



<p>"The hope is that I can find new ways for amateurs to make useful contributions to professional work. But I certainly did not expect an outcome as productive as this project has been!”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-jupiter-s-clouds-and-citizen-science">Jupiter's clouds and citizen science</h2>



<p>The ammonia maps derived from these simpler methods make it easier for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/citizen-scientists-gain-a-stronger-connection-with-nature/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">citizen scientists</a> and hobbyists to watch changes in Jupiter’s atmosphere. </p>



<p>Researchers note that visible shifts, such as the appearance of small storms or fluctuations around Jupiter’s famous bands, can be tracked alongside these measurements of ammonia. The same goes for notable features like the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jupiters-great-red-spot-may-not-be-as-old-as-we-expected/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Great Red Spot</a>.</p>



<p>“A special advantage of this technique is that it could be used frequently by amateurs to link visible weather changes on Jupiter to ammonia variations, which could be important ingredients in the weather," explained John Rogers of the <a href="https://britastro.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">British Astronomical Association</a>, who contributed to the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-occasional-ammonia-ice-clouds">Occasional ammonia ice clouds</h2>



<p>In certain spots, strong updrafts can still create puffy ammonia ice clouds. Spacecraft such as NASA’s <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/galileo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galileo</a> and <a href="https://www.missionjuno.swri.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Juno</a> have documented small white clouds, complete with shadows, floating above a darker deck. </p>



<p>Researchers suggest that, in those places, the rapid uplift allows the ammonia to condense before it is broken apart or mixed with photochemical haze. </p>



<p>This idea explains why occasional bright patches of ammonia ice appear in the midst of Jupiter’s typically <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-fresh-look-at-jupiter-through-an-ultraviolet-lens/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">darker cloud deck</a>.</p>



<p>Photochemistry is thought to play a key role in producing smog-like material. When ammonia-rich air is driven upward, exposure to sunlight triggers reactions that either destroy ammonia or blend it with other products. </p>



<p>The result is a cloud deck that tends to contain ammonium hydrosulphide and tinted substances, giving Jupiter its reddish-brown tones.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-similar-phenomena-observed-on-saturn">Similar phenomena observed on Saturn</h2>



<p>Inspired by these Jupiter results, Professor Irwin’s team extended the same filter-based analysis to data from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/from-rain-to-saturns-rings-new-equations-push-the-boundaries-of-fluid-dynamics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Saturn</a>. </p>



<p>Their models mirrored the findings of other researchers, including those using the James Webb Space Telescope. </p>

<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saturn-has-megastorms-that-affect-its-weather-for-centuries/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Saturn’s clouds</a> also seem to lie deeper than the ammonia condensation level. This indicates that smog production and dynamic weather processes could be at play there as well.</p>



<p>Such similarities offer fresh avenues for connecting the gas giants. Both planets show layered atmospheres shaped by rising and sinking air parcels, along with chemical reactions triggered by sunlight. </p>



<p>Whether these parallels arise from identical processes or represent shared ingredients in different conditions remains an active topic of study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-jupiter-s-clouds-matter">Why Jupiter's clouds matter</h2>



<p>These results open up opportunities for more frequent measurements of Jupiter’s atmosphere. The less complex technique gives amateur and professional astronomers a handy tool for examining weather patterns and gas distributions on short notice. </p>



<p>That can support large-scale efforts to piece together how storms, jets, and other atmospheric elements evolve over days, weeks, and even years.</p>



<p>With deeper insights into both Jupiter and Saturn, researchers plan to continue mapping cloud levels and chemical makeup. They hope to see if these discoveries match what spacecraft detect from orbit. </p>



<p>The combination of space-based instruments and Earth-based telescopes, now supported by citizen science efforts, may yield an even fuller understanding of these swirling worlds.</p>

Discovery about Jupiter's clouds leaves astronomers "astonished"

<p>Imagine strolling along the same path where our ancestors once walked, then accidentally discovering human footprints that had been left behind roughly 115,000 years ago. </p>



<p>This is precisely what happened to a group of archaeologists when they found the oldest-known human footprints on the Arabian Peninsula.</p>



<p>Discovered among the tracks of prehistoric animals, these imprints mark a significant discovery in the study of human migration and life before the Ice Age.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-human-footprints-on-the-arabian-peninsula">Early human footprints on the Arabian Peninsula </h2>



<p>In 2017, the fossilized <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earliest-human-footprints-ever-found-are-believed-to-be-300000-years-old/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tracks</a> were spotted in a special lakebed region of northern Saudi Arabia. The tracks consisted of seven discrete footprints.</p>



<p>"Here, we report hominin and non-hominin mammal footprints and fossils from the Alathar lacustrine deposit in the western Nefud Desert, Saudi Arabia," noted the researchers.</p>



<p>"We argue that the footprints, dated to the last interglacial and therefore contemporaneous with an early&nbsp;<em>H. sapiens</em>&nbsp;out-of-Africa dispersal, most likely represent the earliest evidence of our species in the Arabian Peninsula."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-out-of-africa-theory-the-basics">Understanding the "out-of-Africa" theory -- the basics</h2>



<p>The connection between early humans, Africa, and Arabia is rooted in the migration patterns that shaped human history. Most scientists believe that modern humans, <em>Homo sapiens</em>, first evolved in Africa about 200,000 years ago. </p>



<p>From there, they began to spread out across the globe. Arabia played a key role as a "gateway" for these early humans. </p>



<p>Situated between Africa and Asia, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/turquoise-lagoons-on-the-coast-of-saudi-arabia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arabian Peninsula</a> acted as a land bridge, allowing humans to migrate from Africa into other parts of the world. </p>



<p>Over time, Arabia's varied landscapes, from deserts to coastal areas, offered resources that helped early humans survive and settle in the region.</p>



<p>As early humans moved through Arabia, they didn’t just pass through; they made it their home. Evidence shows that humans adapted to the harsh desert environment, developed tools, and built communities. </p>



<p>However, as we discuss here, theories about the exact timeline of <em>H. sapiens</em> arrival in Arabia continue to change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-footprints-in-similar-states">Human footprints in similar states</h2>



<p>The lakebed, named "the trace" in Arabic, seems to have been a busy spot over 100,000 years ago. The scientists noted that the footprints - which were found in similar states of preservation - were likely generated within a very short time frame. </p>



<p>"An experimental study of modern human footprints in mud flats found that fine details were lost within two days and prints were rendered unrecognizable within four, and similar observations have been made for other non-hominin mammal tracks," explained the researchers.</p>



<p>Mud, it seems, is nature's perfect canvas to capture history, even though the impressions may be lost rather rapidly from the soft surface. </p>



<p>During the Burgess Shale event, for example, organisms were preserved intact because they were caught in a mudslide.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-tracks-of-our-ancestors">The tracks of our ancestors</h2>



<p>As complex as the past is, several theories have been proposed about the upright primates of that era. Mounting evidence indicates that the tracks were left by members of our own species, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/prehistoric-homo-sapiens-stone-tools-preserved-volcanic-ash-grotta-di-castelcivita/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Homo sapiens</em></a>.</p>



<p>"Seven hominin footprints were confidently identified and, given the fossil and archaeological evidence for the spread of <em>H. sapiens</em> into the Levant and Arabia during the era 130,000 to 80,000 years ago, and absence of <em>Homo neanderthalensis</em> from the Levant at that time, we argue that <em>H. sapiens</em> was responsible for the tracks at Alathar," stated the researchers. </p>



<p>Furthermore, the experts noted that the sizes of the Alathar footprints are more consistent with those of early <em><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neanderthals-homo-sapiens-living-spaces-organized-similarly/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">H. sapiens</a></em> than <em><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/isolation-played-a-key-role-in-neanderthal-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">H. neanderthalensis</a></em>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brief-visits-to-the-lake">Brief visits to the lake</h2>



<p>The scientists did not find marks from tools or knives on the animal bones that were uncovered in the area. In other words, there was no evidence of hunting. </p>



<p>Does this mean the humans just dropped by for a drink?</p>

<p>"The lack of archaeological evidence suggests that the Alathar Lake was only briefly visited by people," the researchers noted. The visit, it seemed, was primarily "tied to the need for potable water."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-last-steps-before-the-ice-age">Last steps before the Ice age</h2>



<p>The fossilized footprints raise the obvious question of who made them, but they also spark another intriguing question: why weren't the tracks covered by those of another group?</p>



<p>One theory is that they may have been the last ones who migrated through a temperate climate before being obliterated by the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/disastrous-climate-changes-of-the-last-ice-age-could-happen-again/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ice Age</a>. Their silent footsteps, captured in the mud, are a reminder of a history we may never fully understand.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-footprints-of-ancient-humans-and-animals">Footprints of ancient humans and animals</h2>



<p>The footprints discovered at Alathar Lake not only reveal the presence of early humans but also offer a snapshot of the ecosystem that existed 115,000 years ago. </p>



<p>Surrounding the human footprints, scientists identified tracks from animals such as elephants, camels, and antelopes. The research paints a vivid picture of a lush environment that was vastly different from the arid desert seen today.</p>



<p>These prehistoric creatures likely gathered around the lake to drink water, much like the humans whose tracks were immortalized in the mud.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dynamic-environment-with-shared-resources">Dynamic environment with shared resources </h2>



<p>By analyzing the spatial arrangement and depth of the footprints, researchers can infer details about the behavior and interactions of both humans and animals during this period. </p>



<p>For instance, the proximity of human and animal tracks suggests a dynamic environment where resources like water attracted a variety of species, enabling brief yet crucial encounters. </p>



<p>These findings help scientists piece together not just human history but also the broader ecological tapestry of the region before the harsh climatic shifts of the Ice Age began to arrive.</p>

115,000-year-old human footprints found in a location where they should not be

<p>Imagine the vast expanse of the United States Corn Belt, where fields of corn stretch endlessly toward the horizon, shaping not only the landscape but also the region's weather patterns.</p>



<p>A recent study reveals an intriguing perception: our farming practices and the environment are in an intricate dance, manifesting subtle changes in the weather.</p>



<p>The study paints a vivid picture of "precipitation recycling." This term describes a climate phenomenon where the moisture released from plants, soil, and other geographical features returns to earth as rainfall in a self-sustaining feedback loop.</p>



<p>Due to farming practices and the natural influence of shallow groundwater, precipitation recycling has increased by nearly 30% in the Corn Belt. The feedback loop boosts rainfall during the crucial growing season.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-in-the-eye-of-the-storm-the-u-s-corn-belt">In the eye of the storm: The U.S. Corn Belt</h2>



<p>The Corn Belt, stretching across 12 midwestern and Great Plains states from Ohio to Nebraska, was once a tapestry of tallgrass prairie and woodlands. Today, it is a quilt of croplands extensively maintained through <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/satellites-can-now-show-us-how-much-water-we-use-for-irrigation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">irrigation</a> systems.</p>



<p>The effects of the rainfall recycling are fascinating: as corn matures during the summer months, recycling peaks. The phenomenon is also heightened during drier years when moisture from other regions is scarce.</p>



<p>"This research shows how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/developing-climate-smart-agricultural-practices/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">agricultural practices</a> can modify regional climate, with implications for food and water security," noted study lead author Zhe Zhang. </p>



<p>"In an agricultural region like the U.S. Corn Belt where rainfall is critical, it’s important for both farmers and water resource managers to understand where the rain comes from."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-factors-influencing-weather-in-the-corn-belt">Factors influencing weather in the Corn Belt </h2>



<p>The process of squeezing out these results involved some serious computer modeling power. </p>



<p>The researchers used the NSF NCAR-based Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, which simulates the atmosphere down to a high resolution of about 2.5 miles.</p>

<p>In a stunning new discovery, a team of researchers from the Universities of Oxford and Birmingham have unearthed a massive expanse of quarry floor filled with hundreds of different dinosaur footprints, creating a variety of enormous trackways.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These footprints, located at Dewars Farm Quarry in Oxfordshire, date back to the Middle Jurassic Period, approximately 166 million years ago.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to the scientists, these trackways form part of a huge “dinosaur highway” and include footprints from the nine-meter predator Megalosaurus, as well as from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/isle-of-wight-fossils-suggest-that-europe-had-unique-plant-eating-dinosaurs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">herbivorous dinosaurs</a> that were up to twice that size.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-dinosaur-highway-the-basics">Understanding the dinosaur highway - the basics</h2>



<p>"The Dinosaur Highway" refers to a stretch of coastline in the southeast of England, particularly around the Isle of Wight and the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. This area is famous for its rich fossil deposits, where dinosaur tracks and fossils have been discovered. </p>



<p>The Isle of Wight, often called the "Dinosaur Island," is especially known for having some of the best-preserved dinosaur footprints in the world. </p>



<p>Scientists have found evidence of many different species that lived millions of years ago, from plant-eating herbivores to massive carnivorous predators.</p>



<p>The Jurassic Coast, a <a href="https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNESCO World Heritage site</a>, stretches across Dorset and East Devon and is another key part of this "Dinosaur Highway." </p>



<p>This coastline is not just home to dinosaur fossils but also offers a stunning view of Earth's geological history, with layers of rock dating back to the Mesozoic era.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extensive-trackways-on-the-dinosaur-highway">Extensive trackways on the dinosaur highway</h2>



<p>The excavation uncovered five main trackways, with indications of additional footprints in the surrounding area. One trackway spans over 150 meters. </p>



<p>Four of the trackways were traced to gigantic, long-necked sauropods, likely Cetiosaurus, reaching up to 18 meters in length. </p>



<p>The fifth belonged to a carnivorous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-theropod-dinosaurs-thrived-in-polar-environments/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">theropod</a> dinosaur, Megalosaurus, recognized by its large, three-toed footprints. </p>



<p>In one section, sauropod footprints and Megalosaurus tracks intersect, hinting at the possibility of these dinosaurs encountering each other in this prehistoric setting.</p>



<p>“Scientists have known about and been studying Megalosaurus for longer than any other dinosaur on Earth, and yet these recent discoveries prove there is still new evidence of these animals out there, waiting to be found,” said Emma Nicholls, a vertebrate paleontologist at the <a href="https://www.oumnh.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oxford University Museum of Natural History</a> (OUMNH).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-discovery-sparked-by-keen-observations">Discovery sparked by keen observations</h2>



<p>The footprints lay hidden under mud until quarry worker Gary Johnson noticed “unusual bumps” while clearing clay to expose the quarry floor. At that point, experts were brought in to investigate the site more closely.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Supported by Quarry Manager Mark Stanway and his staff, a large research team from the Universities of <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oxford</a> and <a href="https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Birmingham</a> spent a week in June 2024 carefully revealing around 200 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/matching-dinosaur-footprints-on-different-continents-trace-their-global-travels-gondwana/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">footprints</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They used aerial drone photography to build highly detailed 3D models, ensuring the footprints are documented for future scientific research.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-link-to-previous-finds">A link to previous finds</h2>



<p>These new trackways connect with discoveries made in the same area in 1997. Past limestone quarrying had then revealed over 40 sets of footprints, some stretching 180 meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The earlier finds provided crucial insight into the types of dinosaurs that roamed the United Kingdom during the Middle Jurassic and helped establish the location as a “Site of Special Scientific Interest.”</p>



<p>Nevertheless, technology at that time did not allow for extensive digital or drone-based documentation. Modern techniques permit much more thorough recording of footprints, yielding a deeper understanding of dinosaur biology and behavior.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-window-into-ancient-environments">A window into ancient environments</h2>



<p>“These footprints offer an extraordinary window into the lives of dinosaurs, revealing details about their movements, interactions, and the tropical environment they inhabited,” said Kirsty Edgar, a micropaleontologist at the University of Birmingham.&nbsp;</p>



<p>More than 20,000 images were taken of the prints, forming a valuable resource for further study. Scientists hope this archive will help them reconstruct details about how dinosaurs moved, their potential speeds, and whether and how they may have interacted.</p>



<p>Beyond footprints, the site’s rich geological context can offer insight into its ancient environment, a muddy lagoon where these creatures walked millennia ago.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The preservation is so detailed that we can see how the mud was deformed as the dinosaur’s feet squelched in and out. Along with other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossils-capture-a-turning-point-in-the-evolution-of-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossils</a> like burrows, shells and plants, we can bring to life the muddy lagoon environment the dinosaurs walked through,” said Duncan Murdock, an Earth scientist at OUMNH.</p>

<p>Public health experts have long warned that <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/salmonella/symptoms-causes/syc-20355329" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Salmonella</a> can lurk in poultry products, but fresh research suggests the problem may be bigger than previously recognized. </p>



<p>Evidence collected from a layered poultry chain in <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Liaoning" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Liaoning Province, China</a>, has highlighted contamination at different points of production.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Concerns about antibiotic resistance are also surfacing, which raises questions about how to contain these bacteria before they reach consumers. </p>



<p>The implications point to a need for tighter measures and more knowledge about how best to keep poultry safe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-salmonella-and-poultry-products">Salmonella and poultry products</h2>



<p>In the newly published investigation, researchers took 1,207 samples from various points along a commercial egg production line. </p>



<p>They discovered that 130, or 10.8%, tested <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-salmonella-outsmarts-our-gut-defenses/">positive for Salmonella</a>, most of which belonged to two specific varieties that are linked with known infection clusters. </p>



<p>Health officials are paying attention to these findings because they illustrate how one bacterium can establish itself in multiple settings, from breeding flocks to final processing facilities. </p>



<p>This level of contamination raises the pressure to identify quick strategies to reduce the spread.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.uri?authorId=36114151400" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chuang Meng</a> from Yangzhou University led the study that applied a combination of epidemiological tracking and genetic analysis to trace Salmonella movements through the chain.</p>



<p>The study concluded that Salmonella contamination in the layered poultry production chain is more extensive than earlier assessments suggested. </p>



<p>Researchers emphasized that the genetic similarity of strains across various production stages highlights the critical need for preventive measures starting at the breeding phase.</p>

<p>Besides direct contamination, the investigation uncovered indications that many of these Salmonella strains carry genes associated with resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics. </p>

<p>Across the Atlantic, the European Food Safety Authority (<a href="https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/topics/topic/salmonella" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EFSA</a>) warns that Salmonella “remains one of the most frequently reported causes of foodborne outbreaks in the European Union.” </p>



<p>Meanwhile, the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (<a href="https://www.fsis.usda.gov/food-safety/safe-food-handling-and-preparation/poultry" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FSIS</a>) refers to the presence of Salmonella on raw poultry products “a serious concern.” </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breeding-stage-vulnerabilities">Breeding stage vulnerabilities</h2>



<p>An important takeaway from this research is the vulnerability that emerges during the early phases of poultry breeding. Bacteria introduced at that point can persist through egg laying, processing, and distribution.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet <em>Archaeopteris</em>: the first modern tree</h2>



<p>The star of this ancient forest is <em>Archaeopteris</em> – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur <em>Archaeopteryx</em>. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.</p>



<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-today-s-climate">Lessons for today's climate</h2>

And that's true no matter what class of molecules you look at."</p>



<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cellular-changes-and-microbiome-shifts">Cellular changes and microbiome shifts</h2>



<p>The Stanford research revealed that these aging bursts affect our microbiome – the trillions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi living in and on our bodies. <p>Additionally, researchers found that protein production and gene expression begin to fall out of sync as we age. <p>Snyder emphasized the importance of proactive health measures. "I'm a big believer that we should try to adjust our lifestyles while we're still healthy," he noted. This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>As aging understanding evolves, one thing becomes clear: aging isn't inevitable decline, but specific biological events we may learn to prevent or reverse. The key is recognizing when these transitions occur and taking proactive health steps during vulnerable periods.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-discovery-in-the-brain">Breakthrough discovery in the brain</h2>

<p>What we call "tickling" is two completely different phenomena, according to the latest research. Light tickling – that feathery sensation that makes you want to scratch – is essentially your body's sophisticated bug detection system. This alerts you to potential insects or parasites on your skin.</p>



<p>Deep tickling – the kind that makes you laugh uncontrollably – involves complex brain circuits and is fundamentally social. You literally cannot tickle yourself with this type of stimulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-self-tickling-is-impossible">Why self-tickling is impossible</h2>



<p>Your cerebellum acts like a prediction machine, recent findings show. When you move your own hand to touch yourself, your brain generates precise predictions about what you will feel and then cancels out the tickling sensation through neural inhibition.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
