<p>For half a century, black hole fireworks have lived mostly in theory. The standard picture holds that if black holes ever “explode,” it’s vanishingly rare - maybe once every 100,000 years somewhere in the universe - and far beyond our reach to witness.</p>



<p>A new analysis flips that expectation on its head. Physicists at the <a href="https://www.umass.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Massachusetts Amherst</a> argue there’s better than a nine-in-ten chance that an observable black hole outburst will occur in the next ten years. </p>



<p>The team noted that our existing array of space- and ground-based telescopes is already capable of seeing it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-holes-that-can-explode">Black holes that can explode</h2>



<p>The scenario hinges on a particular class of black hole first proposed by Stephen Hawking in 1970: <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/primordial-black-holes-may-be-shifting-earths-orbit/">primordial black holes</a> (PBHs).</p>



<p>Unlike their heavyweight cousins born from the deaths of massive stars, PBHs could have formed in the first fractions of a second after the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/if-the-big-bang-theory-is-correct-what-exactly-happened/">Big Bang</a>. During that time, extreme density ripples compressed pockets of the early universe.</p>



<p>Crucially, a PBH can be far lighter than a stellar black hole. And the lighter a black hole is, the hotter it becomes, slowly bleeding energy as particles via Hawking radiation. </p>



<p>As it shrinks, it heats up even more in a runaway process that ends in a final, brilliant outburst. This outburst is a flash of particles and high-energy light that, in principle, we can detect.</p>



<p>That last part has been the sticking point. If PBHs exist, why haven’t we seen one go off? The prevailing wisdom has been that the odds are simply too small on human timescales.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-small-twist-with-big-consequences">Small twist with big consequences</h2>



<p>The UMass Amherst team revisited one of the field’s quiet assumptions: that primordial black holes carry no electric charge. </p>



<p>In their work, they explore a “dark QED” toy model - an analog of electromagnetism that includes a very heavy, hypothetical cousin of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shape-of-electrons-revealed-first-time-through-big-advance-in-quantum-physics/">electron</a>, sometimes called a dark electron.</p>



<p>If PBHs formed with even a tiny amount of this dark electric charge, the researchers show, the charge could temporarily stabilize the black hole’s evaporation. That pause delays the finale, so more PBHs would be reaching their terminal phase now. </p>



<p>With all current experimental constraints folded in, their calculations shift the expected cadence of observable PBH explosions from “about once every hundred millennia” to “roughly once per decade.”</p>



<p>“We’re not claiming it’s guaranteed, but the probability may be as high as 90% that one occurs within the next ten years," said Baker.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-catching-an-exploding-black-hole">Catching an exploding black hole</h2>



<p>If a PBH is in its endgame, it should spew a burst of Hawking radiation: a short-lived cascade of particles and photons across a broad energy range. That signature is exactly the kind of high-energy transient today’s observatories are built to chase.</p>



<p>Space telescopes sensitive to gamma rays and X-rays, wide-field optical surveyors scanning the sky nightly, and radio arrays listening for fleeting bursts could all contribute to catching - and confirming - the event. </p>



<p>Because only lightweight primordial black holes can explode today, detecting Hawking radiation would be tantamount to detecting a PBH.</p>



<p>The team’s message is simple: prepare the observing playbook now. Coordinated triggers, rapid follow-up, and cross-checks across wavelengths could turn a single flash into a definitive detection.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-detection-would-rewrite-the-textbooks">Detection would rewrite the textbooks</h2>



<p>Seeing a PBH explode would do more than check a box next to Hawking’s most famous prediction. It would provide the first direct evidence that black holes radiate and evaporate, lifting a key idea out of the realm of theory and into observation.</p>



<p>It would also prove PBHs exist at all - and that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-capture-baby-pictures-of-the-very-early-universe-cosmic-microwave-background/">infant universe</a> could seed gravitational monsters without stars. Perhaps most tantalizing, the debris of that final flash would act like a cosmic census. </p>



<p>In principle, the particle spray encodes every constituent of nature that couples to gravity and can be thermally produced. These include familiar residents like electrons and quarks, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/higgs-boson-god-particle-still-remains-quantum-mystery-after-12-years/">Higgs boson</a>, any dark matter particles if they exist, and potentially species we’ve never seen.</p>



<p>A single well-observed event could offer a once-only inventory of the universe’s building blocks, informing everything from particle physics to cosmology.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bold-claims-big-stakes">Bold claims, big stakes</h2>



<p>Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence. The group’s “dark QED” setup is intentionally simple, and the true microphysics of any dark sector - if it exists - could differ.</p>



<p>Still, the work highlights how modest changes to long-held assumptions can dramatically alter expectations for what we might observe. </p>



<p>It also underscores an opportunity: even if the odds are lower than the headline number, the payoff of a detection is so immense that it makes sense to plan for it.</p>



<p>We already know how to look. We already have the tools. If nature obliges, the next decade could deliver a brief, brilliant flash that confirms Hawking radiation, reveals <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/directly-detecting-dark-matter-primordial-black-holes-simple-as-monitoring-mars-orbit/">primordial black holes</a>, and hands physicists a ledger of the universe’s particles - all in one cosmic firework.</p>

<p>Electronic waste, or e-waste, is a rapidly growing problem. Each year, the world generates approximately 50 million tons of this type of waste.</p>



<p>It's alarming to note that only 20% of e-waste is recycled, while the rest finds its way to landfills or incineration - both of which contribute to environmental pollution.</p>



<p>However, scientists have found a shining opportunity amid this grim reality, proving that every cloud truly has a silver (or gold) lining.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-e-waste-the-basics">Understanding e-waste -- the basics</h2>



<p>As technology advances quickly, people upgrade their gadgets, leaving behind old devices that often end up in landfills. </p>



<p>Unfortunately, e-waste can be <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/electronic-waste-is-growing-five-times-faster-than-recycling/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">harmful to the environment</a> because many electronic items contain hazardous materials, such as lead, mercury, and cadmium. </p>



<p>These toxic substances can leach into the soil and water, polluting ecosystems and posing health risks to both humans and wildlife.</p>



<p>Many parts of electronic devices, like metals, plastics, and glass, can be reused in the manufacturing of new products. Proper recycling of e-waste not only helps reduce <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/international-day-of-zero-waste-a-global-commitment-to-a-sustainable-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environmental pollution</a> but also conserves valuable resources.</p>



<p>However, recycling e-waste requires specialized processes to safely extract these materials, and not all recycling centers are equipped to handle it.</p>



<p>Scientists are hoping that this new discovery will make the recycling process much more profitable for centers, encouraging more of them to help the world tackle this e-waste problem.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-transforming-e-waste-into-gold">Transforming e-waste into gold</h2>



<p>The idea of extracting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/supergiant-gold-deposit-find-claims-to-be-the-worlds-largest-discovery-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gold</a> from electronic waste is not new. It is estimated that a ton of electronic waste contains at least 10 times more gold than a ton of regular ore from which gold is mined.</p>



<p>But the devil is in the detail, or in this case, in the gold extraction process. Traditional techniques involve using harsh toxins like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cyanide-may-have-contributed-to-the-emergence-of-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cyanide</a>, which pose major environmental risks.</p>



<p>Yet, scientists at the <a href="https://cals.cornell.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell</a> have devised an ingenious solution that is eco-friendly and doubly beneficial.</p>



<p>The new method does not just extract gold from e-waste, it also uses the precious metal to convert carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>), a key greenhouse gas, into useful chemicals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extracting-gold-with-precision">Extracting gold with precision </h2>



<p>The research, led by postdoc researcher Amin Zadehnazari, is rooted in the creation of vinyl-linked covalent organic frameworks (VCOFs).</p>



<p>These VCOFs are designed to pick out gold ions and nanoparticles from the intricate circuit boards found in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-e-waste-millions-of-tons-discarded-in-the-us-each-year/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">discarded electronic devices</a>, and they do so with remarkable precision and efficiency.</p>



<p>One of the VCOFs was found to capture a whopping 99.9% of the gold, leaving behind other metals like nickel and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/copper-industry-of-king-solomons-era-didnt-harm-the-environment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">copper</a>.</p>



<p>“We can then use the gold-loaded COFs to convert CO<sub>2</sub> into useful chemicals,” noted Zadehnazari. “By transforming &nbsp;CO<sub>2</sub> into value-added materials, we not only reduce waste disposal demands, we also provide both environmental and practical benefits. It’s kind of a win-win for the environment.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-building-a-greener-future">Building a greener future</h2>



<p>The unique properties of the VCOFs lie in their building blocks - tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and tetraphenylethylene (TPE). </p>



<p>Tetrathiafulvalene is rich in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sulfur-may-have-played-key-role-origin-of-life-on-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sulfur</a>, which makes it a natural magnet for gold. TTF also demonstrated an amazing endurance, withstanding 16 washings and reuses without showing significant loss of adsorption efficiency.</p>



<p>Another fascinating aspect of this method is its ability to convert CO<sub>2</sub> into organic matter under ambient CO<sub>2</sub> pressure at 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit), a result of carboxylation.</p>



<p>This process doubles the benefit of the technique, as it is not just extracting precious metal but also reducing the levels of a potent greenhouse gas.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-selectively-capturing-gold-from-e-waste">Selectively capturing gold from e-waste </h2>



<p>Study co-author Alireza Abbaspourrad, a professor of food chemistry and ingredient technology, emphasized the importance of this selective recovery.</p>



<p>“Knowing how much gold and other precious metals go into these types of electronics devices, being able to recover them in a way where you can selectively capture the metal you want - in this case, gold - is very important,” said Abbaspourrad.</p>



<p>As we face a future burdened with 80 million metric tons of e-waste by 2030, it has become more crucial than ever to find sustainable ways of dealing with this issue.</p>



<p>The method developed by the Cornell team provides us with a glimmer of hope - a vision of a future where waste becomes wealth, and where our technological habits serve nature rather than harm it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-growing-challenge-of-e-waste">The growing challenge of e-waste</h2>



<p>E-waste is more than just an environmental problem; it’s a global crisis. Rapid technological advances and shorter product lifespans have fueled an unprecedented rise in discarded electronics.</p>



<p>Most of the waste comes from high-income countries, but its disposal disproportionately affects lower-income countries, where lax regulations result in unsafe recycling practices.</p>



<p>E-waste is manually dismantled in informal sectors in many regions, often exposing workers to hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, and brominated flame retardants. </p>



<p>These toxic chemicals not only harm human health but also leach into soil and water, posing long-term ecological risks.</p>



<p>The new VCOF technology developed at Cornell is a critical step forward in addressing the growing challenges of e-waste.</p>

<p>Canada lynx are elusive predators, uniquely adapted to the harsh conditions of the Rockies. They can traverse deep snow with ease and spot prey in the darkness from up to 250 feet away. Their keen senses make them formidable hunters, but tracking these cats offers a rare glimpse into their lives, habitats, and the challenges they face.</p>



<p>Researchers have used GPS data and advanced habitat modeling to map and study lynx habitats, focusing on the southern Rocky Mountains in western Colorado, southern Wyoming, and northern New Mexico.</p>



<p>This region marks the southernmost edge of their range. The findings reveal critical insights into the lynx’s habitat needs and conservation priorities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mapping-lynx-habitat-a-conservation-tool">Mapping lynx habitat: A conservation tool</h2>



<p>Updated habitat maps reveal that more than half of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/canada-lynxs-historic-range-points-to-a-promising-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Canada lynx</a>'s range in the southern Rockies lies within protected areas, such as wilderness zones and national parks. </p>



<p>While this is a positive finding, the maps also highlight challenges: lynx habitat in this region is highly fragmented and exists in small, disconnected patches. This fragmentation is due to Colorado's complex mountainous terrain, which restricts suitable lynx habitat to narrow, scattered bands.</p>



<p>These maps serve a critical role in conservation efforts. They identify key wildlife corridors - pathways that lynx use to move between habitat patches. Maintaining these corridors is essential for ensuring habitat connectivity, which helps lynx populations thrive by allowing them to find food, mates, and shelter.</p>



<p>Additionally, the maps help conservation managers pinpoint areas where human activities, wildfires, or forest insect outbreaks may disrupt lynx habitats, allowing for targeted efforts to address these threats and promote habitat preservation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-habitat-characteristics">Key habitat characteristics</h2>



<p>Lynx thrive in high-elevation spruce-fir forests with dense horizontal cover provided by low-hanging tree branches. This environment supports snowshoe hares, which form up to 90% of their winter diet. </p>



<p>Reintroduced to the southern Rockies over 20 years ago, lynx <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-wildlife-conservation-day-2024-saving-species-from-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">populations</a> have since rebounded, with several generations successfully establishing themselves.</p>



<p>To refine their understanding of lynx habitats, the researchers analyzed GPS tracking data alongside over 40 environmental factors, including precipitation, vegetation, road density, and slope.</p>



<p>The models identified areas with high probabilities of lynx occupancy, breeding, and raising young - offering vital guidance for conservation efforts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-threats-to-lynx-habitat">Threats to lynx habitat</h2>



<p>The study also explored how disturbances - such as wildfires, insect outbreaks, and human activity - overlap with lynx habitats. While insect outbreaks affected 31% of likely habitat, their impact is relatively minor.</p>



<p>“We know that lynx continue to occupy areas after insects kill the overstory trees during spruce-beetle outbreaks,” explained Dr. John Squires, principal investigator. Young conifer growth and surviving trees often sustain hares, mitigating the impact of these outbreaks.</p>



<p>Wildfires, however, present a more significant threat. Lynx tend to avoid fire-impacted areas until the understory regrows, which can take over 50 years. </p>



<p>Though wildfires overlapped only 5% of lynx habitat from 1990–2022, high-severity fires are a growing risk due to climate change and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-environment-day-2024-a-call-for-land-restoration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">increased forest vulnerability</a>.</p>



<p>“Frequent, high-severity fire is the main risk to lynx in high-elevation forests moving forward,” Squires noted.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-impacts-temporary-vs-permanent-changes">Human impacts: Temporary vs. permanent changes</h2>



<p>Human activities, such as timber harvesting and prescribed burns, impact a smaller portion of lynx habitat compared to other disturbances. These activities typically result in temporary changes to the forest, as the vegetation eventually regrows and the habitat can recover over time.</p>



<p>In contrast, urban development and the expansion of ski resorts lead to permanent habitat loss. These activities replace natural landscapes with buildings, roads, and other infrastructure, making it impossible for the affected areas to return to their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/canada-lynx-survival-linked-to-life-cycle-of-snowshoe-hares/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">original state</a>. </p>



<p>As a result, urbanization and ski resort expansion pose a more significant, long-term threat to lynx conservation than temporary changes caused by forest management practices.</p>



<p>“We were surprised at how little lynx habitat overlapped areas of managed forest and human development,” said Dr. Lucretia Olson, a co-author of the study. “We hope our work will reach managers who make complex decisions about land uses.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-collaborative-conservation-efforts">Collaborative conservation efforts</h2>



<p>The success of this research highlights the importance of partnerships between agencies and organizations. </p>



<p>“Close collaboration across state and federal agencies in terms of data sharing, logistical support, and added expertise made this research possible,” said Squires.</p>



<p>By combining cutting-edge tools with collaborative efforts, this research provides a robust foundation for conserving Canada lynx in the southern Rockies. Protecting these majestic cats requires continued vigilance, strategic land management, and a commitment to maintaining their delicate mountain habitats.</p>

<p>Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino was one of the most famous artists of the Renaissance. Born on April 6, 1483, in Urbino, Italy, he became known for his beautiful paintings and frescoes. Sadly, he passed away on his 37th birthday, April 6, 1520.</p>



<p>He’s best remembered for works like "The School of Athens," a stunning fresco in the Vatican, "Madonna della Rosa," as discussed here, and "The Transfiguration," which is often seen as his final masterpiece. </p>



<p>Raphael was known for creating art that felt balanced, clear, and full of beauty, blending emotion with graceful figures. </p>



<p>He was able to mix the emotional depth of artists like Leonardo da Vinci with the elegant compositions of artists like Michelangelo.</p>



<p>Besides painting, Raphael was also a talented architect. He worked on the design of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican and later became the chief architect there. </p>



<p>His influence shaped both art and architecture during the Renaissance, and he’s still considered one of the greats, alongside Leonardo and Michelangelo.</p>

<p><em>Madonna della Rosa</em>&nbsp;is a Renaissance painting  that was created during the late period of Raphael's career. The artwork portrays the Madonna and Child alongside St. Joseph and St. John, reflecting themes of familial unity and sacred devotion. </p>



<p>The painting is notable for its vibrant color palette, soft rendering of figures, and the delicate interplay of light and shadow - all of which are hallmarks of Raphael's mature style.</p>



<p>Currently housed in the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, the painting has undergone various restoration efforts over centuries to preserve its details and hues. </p>



<p>Its title,&nbsp;<em>Madonna della Rosa</em>&nbsp;("Madonna of the Rose"), comes from the symbolic rose depicted in the scene, which has often been interpreted as a reference to the Virgin Mary's purity and suffering.</p>

<p>While the painting’s authenticity as a Raphael original has been questioned since the mid-1800s, recent AI-powered analysis points to a significant conclusion: St. Joseph’s face was likely painted by another artist.</p>



<p>"Using deep feature analysis, we used pictures of authenticated Raphael paintings to train the computer to recognize his style to a very detailed degree, from the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/acoustic-echoes-may-have-inspired-prehistoric-rock-art/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brushstrokes</a>, the color palette, the shading, and every aspect of the work," explained Hassan Ugail, mathematician and computer scientist from the <a href="https://www.bradford.ac.uk/external/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bradford</a>.</p>



<p>"The computer sees far more deeply than the human eye, to microscopic level."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-using-ai-to-analyze-the-painting">Using AI to analyze the painting</h2>



<p>The researchers designed a specialized algorithm to compare <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rock-art-reveals-early-human-ties-with-amazon-animals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">elements of the painting</a> to those found in verified Raphael works. </p>



<p>This AI analysis, grounded in Microsoft’s ResNet50 framework and enhanced with a Support Vector Machine technique, could discern nuances at a microscopic level. The technology had previously demonstrated 98% accuracy in identifying Raphael’s works.</p>



<p>For this study, the team took the innovative step of analyzing individual faces within the painting. While the Madonna, the Child, and St. John showed clear signs of Raphael’s style, St. Joseph’s face stood out as inconsistent.</p>



<p>"When we tested the&nbsp;<em>della Rosa</em>&nbsp;as a whole, the results were not conclusive," said Ugail. "So, then we tested the individual parts and while the rest of the picture was confirmed as Raphael, Joseph's face came up as most likely not Raphael."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-who-is-the-mystery-artist">Who is the mystery artist?</h2>



<p>Historical evidence suggests Giulio Romano, one of Raphael’s most talented pupils, may have contributed to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-neanderthals-mastered-adhesive-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">painting</a>. </p>



<p>Art critics have long noted St. Joseph’s face appears less refined compared to the other figures. While the AI analysis strengthens this theory, it does not definitively confirm the identity of the artist responsible for painting St. Joseph.</p>

<p>This revelation demonstrates the potential of AI to complement, not replace, human expertise in art authentication. </p>

<p>"This is not a case of AI taking people's jobs," said Ugail. "The process of authenticating a work of art involves looking at many aspects, from its provenance, pigments, condition of the work, and so on."</p>



<p>"However, this sort of software can be used as one tool to assist in the process."</p>

<p>The idea of life continuing on Earth without humans has a way of catching our attention. Our species has spread across land and sea, altering the planet in countless ways.</p>



<p>Still, Earth’s history shows that no species lasts forever. It can be sobering to consider a future without us, but it also sparks plenty of curiosity about what might follow in our absence.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-discovery-anadoluvius-turkae-suggests-humans-originated-in-europe-not-africa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Human beings</a> have been at the center of ecological change on Earth for thousands of years. Our inventions and communities have reshaped forests, oceans, and even the atmosphere. </p>



<p>Yet many researchers say nature will adapt once we are gone. This leads to questions about who - or what - would occupy our spot.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-after-humans">Earth after humans</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.biology.ox.ac.uk/people/tim-coulson" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Professor Tim Coulson</a> from the <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oxford</a> has spent years studying biology and evolution. He believes our disappearance could open the door to surprising new species that take over Earth’s ecological roles.</p>



<p>In his book, <a href="https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/459065/the-universal-history-of-us-by-coulson-tim/9780241662304" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Universal History of Us</a>, he traces life’s entire history and zeroes in on a single, striking prediction about what might come next.</p>



<p>One of his main themes involves evolution, which he describes as the “gradual change in living organisms over time as they better adapt to their environments.”</p>



<p>He emphasizes that “most mutations are harmful, but a few provide a survival or reproductive advantage.” Because genes are heritable, these beneficial mutations become more common over generations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-natural-selection-and-change">Natural selection and change</h2>



<p>Mutations, in Coulson’s view, drive life forward despite the risks. Yet he reminds readers that no species is permanent.</p>



<p>“Extinction is the fate of all species, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-predict-how-and-when-humans-and-mammals-will-face-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">including humans</a>, although let’s hope our demise is far in the future.” </p>



<p>That message can feel unsettling. But it also serves as a reminder that every life form, no matter how successful, eventually faces an endpoint.</p>



<p>Coulson’s outlook stems from years of research into how species emerge, survive, and sometimes vanish. “I started to wonder what species might take our place if humans, and our close great ape relatives, were to die out,” he says.</p>



<p>Once humans are removed from the picture, Earth's ecosystems could find balance again, which might allow new creatures to fill the empty slots.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-forms-of-intelligence-emerge">New forms of intelligence emerge</h2>



<p>Nobody knows if the next ruling life form would mirror humanity. Coulson proposes that “new forms of intelligence and complexity could emerge in unexpected ways.”</p>



<p>This opens the possibility that a future species might come up with solutions and technologies unlike any we can picture right now.</p>



<p>Some believe that primates are the likeliest successors, but Coulson raises doubts.</p>



<p>“Primates depend heavily on strong social networks,” he explains, along with the idea that “they engage in activities like hunting, grooming, and defense, which are essential for their survival. These constraints might help them struggle to adjust to a world undergoing dramatic ecological shifts.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-successor-to-humans-on-earth">Potential successor to humans on Earth</h2>



<p>In place of our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bonobos-group-cohesion-common-enemy-effect-do-not-kill-inside-their-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">primate relatives</a>, Coulson offers a contender that many might find startling: <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-octopus-day-the-intelligent-creatures-of-the-sea/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the octopus</a>. He points to their cleverness and adaptability.</p>



<p>“Their ability to solve complex problems, communicate with one another in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/blue-ringed-octopus-a-master-of-deception-inspires-new-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flashes of color</a>, and manipulate objects suggests that, given the right <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/turquets-octopus-dna-tells-scientists-that-west-antarctic-ice-sheet-collapse-is-close/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environmental conditions</a>, they could evolve into a civilization-building species.”</p>



<p>He adds, “their advanced neural structure, decentralized nervous system, and remarkable problem-solving skills make several <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rare-dumbo-octopus-captured-on-film-and-video-in-hawaii/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species of octopus</a> well suited for an unpredictable world.”</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/warming-seas-impair-octopus-vision-to-a-critical-extent/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Octopuses</a> already have a reputation for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-octopus-has-mastered-the-art-of-multispecies-hunting/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">being creative</a> and a bit mischievous. </p>



<p>“Some individuals even escape from their tanks at night in some research centers, visiting those of their neighbors, believe it or not,” Coulson says. They are known to use tools, open jars, and display signs of curiosity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-life-underwater">Life underwater</h2>



<p>If humans were gone, oceans might become even more central to Earth’s future. Though land-based creatures have typically held top positions on the food chain, Coulson notes a critical challenge for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/do-octopuses-dream-a-recent-study-shows-octopuses-sleep-is-very-similar-to-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">octopuses</a>.</p>



<p>“Octopuses are unlikely to adapt to life on land due to their lack of a skeleton, which makes swift and agile movement out of water challenging,” he explained.</p>



<p>"With evolutionary advances, it is possible, if not probable, that they might develop ways to breathe outside of water and eventually hunt terrestrial animals like deer, sheep, and other mammals - assuming they have survived the catastrophic event that drove humans extinct."</p>



<p>That sounds extreme. Yet Coulson is simply highlighting how evolution can lead life down paths that seem impossible at first.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-would-octopus-earth-look-like">What would octopus-Earth look like?</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/octopuses-adapt-to-seasonal-temperatures-by-rewiring-their-brains/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Octopuses</a> might build underwater habitats, find new ways to interact with their surroundings, and even reach beyond the waves one day.</p>



<p>“Would octopuses build vast underwater cities and come onto land wearing breathing apparatus to shoot a deer? We’ve no way of knowing,” he says.</p>



<p>No one predicted that ancient primates would slowly turn into bipedal humans with advanced technology.</p>



<p>Coulson believes that “random mutations, unforeseen extinction events, and population bottlenecks can all significantly influence the trajectory of evolution.” This means the future is wide open, shaped by countless variables that scientists can’t fully predict.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impossible-to-know-fun-to-think-about">Impossible to know, fun to think about</h2>



<p>“The future of life on Earth is shaped by countless variables,” he points out. The path of evolution might take strange turns. Some scenarios might never pan out. Others could surprise us by unfolding in real time.</p>



<p>“But could <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/octopus-and-squid-senses-linked-to-human-brain-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">octopuses replace humans</a> - and potentially also <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/primates-face-an-uncertain-future-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">primates</a> - if they were to die out? Absolutely. They could become the brains of the sea.”</p>



<p>For now, it remains an intriguing thought experiment to imagine aquatic invertebrates overseeing a planet once dominated by upright mammals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-imagining-earth-without-humans">Imagining Earth without humans</h2>



<p>Coulson does not claim that this outcome is inevitable. Instead, he suggests it as a lesson in how nature might rearrange itself without us. </p>



<p>Earth’s past is packed with examples of life enduring massive upheavals. It’s possible that intelligence, in some form, might spring up long after humans are gone.</p>



<p>His book underscores evolution’s capacity to produce forms and behaviors that seem strange from our perspective.</p>



<p>This speculation encourages us to think about the delicate nature of our own hold on the planet. Our species is part of a story that began ages ago, and life will keep moving forward, one step at a time.</p>

<p>Plants constantly juggle their energy between growth and defense against harmful bacteria. While the specifics of how they maintain this balance have long been unclear, researchers at Princeton University have discovered that certain soil bacteria play a crucial role in modulating plant immune responses, and allowing them to grow more efficiently.</p>



<p>“This is trying to get at a really big biological question where there are not good answers - about how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/engineered-plant-microbiomes-the-future-of-crop-protection/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbiomes</a> interface with host immune systems,” said Jonathan Conway, senior author of the study and an assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering at <a href="https://www.princeton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Princeton University</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research, published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.celrep.2024.115063" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Cell Reports</em></a>, highlights how specific microbes produce enzymes that can suppress plant immune activity, thus enabling healthier <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/autophagy-what-makes-plant-roots-grow-faster-stronger/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">root growth</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testing-immune-responses-with-model-plants">Testing immune responses with model plants</h2>



<p>To investigate the interaction between plants and microbes, the researchers focused on <em>Arabidopsis</em>, a small plant commonly used in scientific studies. They genetically engineered <em>Arabidopsis</em> plants to have heightened immune sensitivity to flagellin, a bacterial protein that triggers immune responses.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This modification caused the plant’s roots to grow shorter, as its energy was diverted to immune defenses rather than root development.</p>



<p>The team introduced 165 bacterial species isolated from soil-grown <em>Arabidopsis</em> to the plants. Remarkably, 68 of these isolates, or about 41%, reduced the stunted root growth by suppressing the plant’s immune response.&nbsp;</p>



<p>One standout species, <em>Dyella japonica</em>, demonstrated exceptional ability in allowing the roots to grow longer by modulating immune activity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unveiling-the-role-of-a-key-enzyme">Unveiling the role of a key enzyme</h2>



<p>Further investigation into <em>D. japonica</em> revealed a gene encoding a subtilase enzyme. This enzyme had the potential to degrade the specific part of flagellin responsible for triggering the plant’s immune response.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Using genetic and biochemical tools, the researchers confirmed that the subtilase enzyme effectively broke down the flagellin fragment, thereby reducing the immune response and promoting root growth.</p>



<p>However, purifying the subtilase enzyme presented significant challenges. During a conference, postdoctoral researcher and co-first author Samuel Eastman connected with <a href="https://www.usda.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Agriculture</a> chemist Todd Naumann, who suggested purifying the enzyme using yeast cells instead of bacteria.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Within months, Naumann successfully purified the enzyme and sent it to Princeton. “Now we can do chemistry with it, and we can actually look at this in vitro,” Eastman explained. This collaboration allowed the team to conduct more detailed studies of the enzyme’s function.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extensive-study-of-plants-and-soil-bacteria">Extensive study of plants and soil bacteria </h2>



<p>The study was a team effort involving contributions from several researchers and students. Screening 165 bacterial isolates and verifying their immune-modulating effects required extensive work.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We’re able to achieve a level of investigation into this protein that wouldn’t have been possible without that collaboration,” said Eastman.</p>



<p>Students played a significant role in the project, including Princeton graduate Britley Jones, who contributed to screening the bacterial isolates for her senior thesis.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Co-first author Kaeli Ficco, now a Ph.D. student at Cornell University, engineered mutant bacterial strains to confirm the genetic requirement of the subtilase gene for immune suppression.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“I really liked how discovery-based the project was,” Ficco said, reflecting on how the work influenced her research trajectory.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-for-plant-immune-health">Broader implications for plant immune health </h2>



<p>Beyond studying the subtilase enzyme in <em>D. japonica</em>, the researchers identified similar genes in many other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soil-bacteria-help-plants-balance-growth-and-immunity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">soil bacteria</a>. Their assays showed that dozens of bacterial isolates could suppress flagellin-induced immunity in plants. This suggests that this mechanism may be widespread in the plant microbiome.</p>



<p>The team is now exploring why this enzyme may benefit both plants and bacteria. One hypothesis is that degrading pathogenic flagella reduces the ability of harmful bacteria to invade plant roots.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“So, in that way it could be suppressing pathogens as well as the plant immune system,” said Eastman. Alternatively, the enzyme might allow certain bacteria to bypass plant defenses, potentially making <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plant-diseases-flourish-in-city-landscapes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plants</a> more vulnerable to disease.</p>



<p>This dual possibility raises questions about applying these findings in agriculture.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We don’t want to compromise the immune system, but we also want plants to save that immune response for when it matters,” Eastman emphasized.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The ultimate goal is to help plants “keep calm and keep growing.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>



<p>Further studies are needed to understand better how these enzymes can be leveraged in agricultural settings without increasing the plants’ susceptibility to pathogens.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By elucidating the relationship between soil microbes and plant immunity, this research offers promising avenues for optimizing crop growth while maintaining disease resistance.</p>



<p>This work marks a significant step toward uncovering the intricate dynamics between plant hosts and their microbiomes, and sheds light on how these interactions can be harnessed to support <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soil-footprint-a-new-frontier-in-sustainable-farming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sustainable agriculture</a>.</p>

<p>In 2024, global warming propelled Earth to its hottest year on record. This is not just another statistic; it marks a defining moment in our struggle to curb rising temperatures.</p>



<p>This turning point, confirmed by the Copernicus Climate Change Service, signals the first time the world has breached the 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 F) warming limit established by the 2015 Paris Agreement.</p>



<p>The global treaty seeks to curb the escalating impacts of climate change, but nature seems to be racing ahead and ignoring our best-laid plans.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-2024-continues-the-warming-trend">2024 continues the warming trend</h2>



<p>The year 2023 was already somewhat hotter - by about 0.3 degrees Celsius to be precise - than its predecessor, 2022.</p>



<p>"And 2024 continued that trend of being warmer than the previous year," said Kevin Grise, associate professor of environmental sciences at the <a href="https://www.virginia.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Virginia</a>,</p>



<p>Professor Grise teaches courses such as Atmosphere and Weather, Introduction to Climatology, and Atmospheric Dynamics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-predicting-future-weather-events">Predicting future weather events</h2>



<p>Professor Grise's research is fueled by an ambitious goal – to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-weather-is-becoming-more-difficult-to-predict/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">predict future weather</a> events with greater precision.</p>



<p>This pursuit involves the use of intricate computer models that are designed to project the track of climate change based on current estimations. These models hold a mirror to the future, and reflect the potential consequences of a warming planet.</p>



<p>"A key focus is trying to understand whether we can confidently say these models are capturing the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-warming-influences-us-weather-patterns-ai-machine-learning/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">weather pattern</a> changes experts say are going to happen in our changing climate," noted Professor Grise.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-less-relief-from-heat-at-night">Less relief from heat at night</h2>



<p>Over his 11-year tenure at UVA, Grise has witnessed the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-global-temperature-exceeded-2c-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global temperature</a> tick upwards by approximately 0.5 degrees Celsius or about 0.9 degrees Fahrenheit.</p>



<p>His research highlights a shift in atmospheric dynamics and wind circulation patterns, altered by natural cycles and climate change.</p>



<p>For Virginia, the future may hold more heat waves as the climate continues its relentless change.</p>



<p>Professor Grise pointed out an often overlooked aspect of global warming - the nights are not as cool as they used to be.</p>



<p>"If people don't have access to air conditioning, it becomes even harder for them to cool off on very warm nights," he said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chaotic-symphony-of-weather-patterns">Chaotic symphony of weather patterns</h2>



<p>The global warming footprint is manifested in the rise of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-causes-the-rapid-intensification-of-hurricanes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stronger hurricanes</a>, extreme rainfall events, and fluctuating weather patterns.</p>



<p>For instance, Hurricane Beryl emerged as the earliest Category 5 storm in Atlantic history and the strongest to develop in June. </p>



<p>Meanwhile, the U.S. city of Phoenix endured 113 consecutive days with a temperature hovering at or above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.</p>



<p>The year 2024 was also marked by 24 weather/climate disasters in the U.S., each causing losses exceeding $1 billion. </p>



<p>This calamitous lineup included 17 severe storms, four tropical cyclones, one wildfire, and two winter storms - which collectively caused at least 418 deaths.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ocean-heat-waves-and-coastal-challenges">Ocean heat waves and coastal challenges </h2>



<p>Professor Grise has been keeping an eye on another side effect of climate change as well - <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-heat-waves-are-persisting-in-the-u-s-even-in-winter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean heat waves</a>. These anomalies are disrupting marine habitats and fueling extreme weather events with unparalleled intensity.</p>



<p>"We've seen some unusual events that have huge impacts on ecosystems in the ocean and tropical systems. We saw the first ever Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic basin in June, and we saw [Hurricane] Milton hit Florida, which rapidly intensified within 24 hours - an almost 95 mph intensification," said Professor Grise. </p>



<p>In coastal regions like Hampton Roads, rising sea levels and the potential for stronger hurricanes remain pressing concerns. </p>



<p>"The hurricanes that do form have the potential to get stronger than we would expect because the water temperature is warmer," said Professor Grise. "The warmer air can have more water vapor in it, more humidity, and create even more extreme rainfall events."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-consequences-of-a-warmer-world">Consequences of a warmer world</h2>



<p>Warmer temperatures and standing water also create ideal conditions for mosquitoes to breed, potentially expanding habitats for insect-borne diseases.</p>



<p>This could lead to the spread of illnesses such as malaria, dengue fever, and chikungunya into new areas.</p>

<p>The question of how to handle wastewater has been an environmental concern for several decades. Yearly, billions of gallons of untreated or inadequately treated wastewater are released into rivers, lakes, and oceans. This water contaminates ecosystems and severely endangers public health.</p>



<p>Traditional methods of wastewater treatment usually involve energy-intensive processes and chemical additions, which are neither environmentally sustainable nor economically viable in the long run.</p>



<p>These issues are even more severe in arid regions, where limited water resources compound the difficulty of treating and reusing wastewater.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nature-based-solution-for-wastewater-management">Nature-based solution for wastewater management</h2>



<p>Reed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wetlands-are-caught-in-a-battle-between-co2-and-rising-seas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wetlands</a>, or sludge treatment reed beds (STRBs), offer a breakthrough alternative. By leveraging nature to treat wastewater, STRBs minimize environmental harm while maximizing efficiency.</p>



<p>In a recent study, experts have investigated this promising solution. The team demonstrated that reed beds use natural processes to degrade pollutants and reduce sludge - a hazardous byproduct of conventional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteriophages-could-revolutionize-fracking-wastewater-treatment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wastewater treatment</a>.</p>



<p>As nations grapple with increasing water and climate challenges, STRBs represent a critical step toward achieving global sustainability goals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-scientific-breakthrough">A scientific breakthrough </h2>



<p>The research was conducted by scientists at <a href="https://www.squ.edu.om/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sultan Qaboos University</a> and published in the journal <em>Soil &amp; Environmental Health</em>.</p>



<p>The experts have made progress in fine-tuning solutions for sludge management, particularly for arid climates.</p>



<p>The team utilized advanced 16S rRNA sequencing to identify the microbial players responsible for nutrient removal and organic matter stabilization.</p>



<p>Pilot-scale reed beds were tested under varying sludge loading rates. While the higher sludge loads led to increased bacterial diversity, they also resulted in lower community evenness.</p>



<p>Reeds, which are vital to the process, help shape microbial populations and promote the growth of nitrifying bacteria and methanogens.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-science-behind-reed-beds">The science behind reed beds</h2>



<p>Several bacteria were found to have prominent roles in the process. Proteobacteria were the main drivers of critical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sequestering-carbon-in-soil-is-dependent-upon-microbes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon</a> and nitrogen cycles. </p>



<p>Meanwhile, Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria played significant roles in organic matter degradation and nutrient removal.</p>



<p>Reeds planted in the sludge created aerobic niches and released root exudates, which enhanced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-activities-underground-revealed-by-new-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbial activity</a> and promoted the development of specialized rhizosphere communities.</p>



<p>With their contribution, STRBs achieved an impressive 98% reduction in sludge volume. The optimal performance for this was observed at a sludge loading rate of 100 kg/m<sup>2</sup>/year.</p>



<p>"These findings highlight the transformative potential of STRBs in sustainable wastewater management. By leveraging natural processes, STRBs offer an effective and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional methods," noted Daniel Menezes Blackburn, the study's lead researcher.</p>

<p>A new report has revealed that 2024 was yet another year of record-breaking temperatures, which are driving the global water cycle to unprecedented climate extremes and are contributing to massive floods and crippling droughts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to the experts, this intense warming is pushing worldwide water systems to their limits.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-transformations-in-the-global-water-cycle">Transformations in the global water cycle</h2>



<p>According to the 2024 Global Water Monitor Report, an international collaboration led by <a href="http://anu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ANU</a> Professor Albert van Dijk, rising temperatures are significantly changing the way water moves around the planet, “wreaking havoc” on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/distress-signals-earths-water-cycle-is-becoming-more-erratic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water cycle</a>. </p>



<p>With the planet growing steadily hotter, water evaporates more quickly, amplifying severe events like storms and droughts.</p>



<p>“Rising sea surface temperatures intensified tropical cyclones and droughts in the Amazon Basin and southern Africa. Global warming also contributed to heavier downpours and slower-moving storms, as evidenced by deadly flash floods in Europe, Asia and Brazil,” reported van Dijk.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The report notes that, in 2024, about four billion people across 111 countries experienced their hottest year to date, and that air temperatures over land have climbed 1.2 degrees Celsius since the start of the 21st century, roughly 2.2 degrees Celsius higher than the pre-industrial era.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-harsh-water-related-disasters">Harsh water-related disasters</h2>



<p>“In 2024, Earth experienced its hottest year on record, for the fourth year in a row. Water systems across the globe bore the brunt,” van Dijk said.</p>



<p>He emphasized that 2024 was a year of extremes but was not an isolated occurrence. “It is part of a worsening trend of more intense <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-outrun-the-flood-risks-of-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">floods</a>, prolonged droughts, and record-breaking extremes.”</p>



<p>Major water-driven calamities - flash floods, river floods, droughts, tropical cyclones, and landslides - resulted in more than 8,700 deaths and displaced 40 million people worldwide, incurring economic losses exceeding US $550 billion.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“From historic droughts to catastrophic floods, these extreme events impact lives, livelihoods, and entire ecosystems. Separate, heavy rainfall events caused widespread flash flooding in Afghanistan and Pakistan, killing more than 1,000 people,” van Dijk said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Catastrophic flooding in Brazil caused more than 80 deaths, with the region recording more than 300 millimetres of rainfall.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-intensified-rainfall-extremes-and-flash-floods">Intensified rainfall extremes and flash floods</h2>



<p>One of the report’s key findings is the increased frequency of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-rainfall-increases-as-a-direct-result-of-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme rainfall</a>. </p>



<p>“We found rainfall records are being broken with increasing regularity,” said van Dijk.</p>



<p>“For example, record-high monthly rainfall totals were achieved 27 percent more frequently in 2024 than at the start of this century, whereas daily rainfall records were achieved 52 percent more frequently. Record-lows were 38 percent more frequent, so we are seeing worse extremes on both sides.”</p>



<p>Van Dijk noted that in southern China, the Yangtze and Pearl Rivers flooded cities and towns, displacing tens of thousands of people and causing hundreds of millions of dollars in crop damages. In August, heavy monsoon rains and dam releases in Bangladesh caused widespread river flooding.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“More than 5.8 million people were affected and at least one million tons of rice was destroyed. In Spain, more than 500 millimetres of rain fell within eight hours in late October, causing deadly flash floods,” said van Dijk.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-droughts-a-parallel-threat">Droughts: A parallel threat</h2>



<p>While many regions contended with floods, others faced punishing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-now-the-driving-force-behind-droughts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">droughts</a>. </p>



<p>“In the Amazon Basin, one of the Earth’s most important ecosystems, record low river levels cut off transport routes and disrupted hydropower generation.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Wildfires driven by the hot and dry weather burned through more than 52,000 square kilometres in September alone, releasing vast amounts of greenhouse gases,” van Dijk added.</p>



<p>“In southern Africa, a severe drought reduced maize production by more than 50 percent, leaving 30 million people facing food shortages. Farmers were forced to cull livestock as pastures dried up. The drought also reduced hydropower output, leading to widespread blackouts.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preparing-for-more-extreme-events">Preparing for more extreme events</h2>



<p>Van Dijk warned of the growing necessity to prepare for more intense extremes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We need to prepare and adapt to inevitably more severe extreme events. That can mean stronger flood defences, developing more drought-resilient food production and water supplies, and better early warning systems.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Water is our most critical resource, and its extremes - both floods and droughts - are among the greatest threats we face.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warmer-conditions-and-a-turbulent-water-cycle">Warmer conditions and a turbulent water cycle</h2>



<p>The research team gathered data from ground stations and satellites to track variables such as rainfall, soil moisture, and river flows. This extensive data collection offers near real-time insights into water-related disasters, clarifying how climatic shifts and water events intertwine on a global scale.</p>



<p>The 2024 findings confirm that warmer conditions push the water cycle into turbulent territory, with extreme rainfall and severe droughts becoming more frequent and intense.&nbsp;</p>

Rising temperatures are ‘wreaking havoc’ on the global water cycle

A new report has revealed that 2024 was yet another...

<p>The skies above America's heartland have been getting increasingly volatile. Massive thunderstorms and extreme summer rainfalls have been dumping unprecedented amounts of rain across the central and eastern United States.</p>



<p>Backed by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), recent research sheds light on the link between prolonged thunderstorms and these intense downpours. The study offers critical insights into one of the most dangerous weather phenomena: flooding.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-patterns-of-extreme-summer-rainfall">Patterns of extreme summer rainfall</h2>



<p>A team led by meteorologist Jason Chiappa analyzed high-resolution rain data that spanned 21 years, from 2003 to 2023.</p>



<p>The researchers identified instances where the rainfall within 12 hours exceeded the 10-year average for the area. The scientists termed these occurrences "extreme events." </p>



<p>The analysis revealed a clear pattern: thunderstorms that linger for hours over the same region tend to produce extreme rainfall events that are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forecasting-the-floods-new-clues-about-extreme-rainfall/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">responsible for many floods</a>.</p>



<p>“This research will help improve daily and seasonal forecasts to help us understand health and safety concerns related to one of the deadliest consequences from extreme rainfall events - flooding,” said Chungu Lu, an <a href="https://www.nsf.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NSF</a> program manager who supported the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-complexity-of-long-term-rainfall-patterns">Complexity of long-term rainfall patterns </h2>



<p>Chiappa’s analysis showed that while extreme rainfall events have generally increased over the years, they also exhibit <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-rainfall-increases-as-a-direct-result-of-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">annual variations</a>.</p>



<p>"It is important for us to identify changes in the nature and frequency of these events and explore why some years have so many more extreme events than others," Chiappa explained. This variability adds complexity to understanding long-term patterns and preparing for future risks.</p>



<p>Thunderstorms at the heart of these extreme rainfalls don’t follow a simple playbook. These storms often unleash their fury at night, a time when weather models struggle to predict them accurately. Convective rainfall, marked by its sudden and localized nature, poses a particular challenge. </p>



<p>Current global weather and climate models lack the resolution and timing precision to capture reliably such small-scale but high-impact events.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-in-prediction-of-extreme-rainfall">Challenges in prediction of extreme rainfall</h2>



<p>Nighttime thunderstorms are a meteorological puzzle. Weather models, which excel during the day, falter when predicting nocturnal convective storms. </p>



<p>This limitation hampers our ability to forecast extreme rainfall events effectively. Understanding the mechanisms behind these storms and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainfall-is-increasingly-unpredictable-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">improving model accuracy</a> remain key areas for future research.</p>



<p>The study doesn’t just stop at understanding the past; it opens doors to a safer future. By identifying trends and patterns in extreme rainfall, the findings can help enhance weather forecasting tools. </p>

<p>From climate change to soil degradation, agriculture faces mounting challenges. A new study published in the journal <em>Agriculture, Ecosystems &amp; Environment</em>&nbsp;shines a spotlight on a promising solution: using cover crops as “living mulch.”</p>



<p>The research, led by scientists from the Institute of Applied Ecology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shenyang, reveals how intercropping maize with cover crops can rejuvenate soil health and nutrient cycling.</p>



<p>Dr. Li Zhang and her team conducted a remarkable experiment in Changtu County, northeastern China. The researchers examined how legumes, grasses, and mixtures of both as cover crops influenced soil properties, microbial communities, and nutrient availability.</p>



<p>The findings could reshape sustainable farming practices globally.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-are-cover-crops">What are cover crops?</h2>



<p>Cover crops are plants grown alongside or after the main crop to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-soil-day-2024-protecting-our-planets-lifeline/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">enhance soil health</a>. Unlike traditional practices where soil is left bare post-harvest, cover crops prevent erosion, enrich soil fertility, and promote the recycling of plant nutrients. </p>



<p>“Soil degradation, caused by unsustainable farming practices, threatens food security. Cover crops offer a way to restore degraded farmland without compromising productivity,” Dr. Zhang explained.</p>



<p>The concept of “living mulch” involves growing cover crops between rows of maize throughout the crop’s lifecycle. This approach differs from relying solely on decomposing residues, and represents a proactive method to tackle soil degradation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testing-the-potential-of-cover-crops">Testing the potential of cover crops</h2>



<p>The researchers implemented a field study with three treatments.</p>

<li><strong>Legume cover crops</strong>: These crops are known for their nitrogen-fixing ability, legumes add valuable nutrients to the soil.</li>



<li><strong>Grass cover crops</strong>: Grasses contribute to carbon retention and enhance soil structure.</li>

<p>Each type of cover crop offered unique advantages:</p>



<p>Legumes increased dissolved organic carbon and available nitrogen in the soil. These changes altered microbial community dynamics, reducing microbial carbon limitations and boosting carbon cycling. Microbes could access essential nutrients more efficiently, thus enhancing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/electric-soil-esoil-boosts-crop-production-by-50-in-just-15-days/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">overall soil health</a>.</p>



<p>Grasses maintained soil carbon and nitrogen levels while promoting microbial biomass growth. They also supported bacterial diversity, an essential factor for robust nutrient cycling.</p>



<p>Mixed crops of legumes and grasses were the most effective treatment. The combination improved carbon and nitrogen levels, balanced soil nutrients, and amplified microbial functions. Temporal shifts in microbial activity highlighted the dynamic benefits of this approach.</p>



<p>“The mixed cover crop system demonstrated remarkable potential to enhance microbial activity and maintain soil nutrient balance. This makes it an ideal solution for maize intercropping,” noted Dr. Zhang.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-addressing-soil-degradation">Addressing soil degradation</h2>



<p>Soil degradation is a pressing issue, especially in black <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/warming-soils-release-more-carbon-than-plants-can-replace/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">soil</a> regions like northeastern China. These areas, crucial for food production, face declining fertility and erosion. The innovative use of cover crops as living mulch offers a scalable, sustainable solution.</p>



<p>By improving soil organic matter, balancing nutrients, and promoting microbial diversity, these plants reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers.</p>



<p>This not only benefits the environment but also supports farmers by lowering input costs and enhancing long-term productivity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-global-agriculture">Implications for global agriculture</h2>



<p>The insights from the <a href="https://english.cas.cn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chinese Academy of Sciences</a> are relevant well beyond the borders of northeastern China.</p>



<p>Globally, agricultural systems face challenges, like nutrient depletion, biodiversity loss, and climate-related pressures. Adopting plant-based systems could transform <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soil-bacteria-makes-flowers-more-attractive-to-pollinators/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">farming practices</a>, and make agriculture more resilient and sustainable.</p>



<p>“Our research provides a roadmap for integrating cover crops into farming systems worldwide. It’s a win-win for farmers and the environment,” said Dr. Zhang.</p>

<p>Despite the promising results, challenges remain. Farmers may need support to adopt cover crop practices, including education, resources, and policy incentives. </p>

<p>Future research will likely focus on optimizing plant mixtures for different regions and farming systems. Additionally, understanding the long-term economic benefits for farmers will be critical for widespread adoption.</p>

Mixed cover crops may be the future of sustainable farming

From climate change to soil degradation, agriculture faces mounting challenges....

<p>The mysteries beyond our earthly world have always captivated and fascinated us, particularly those of the moon. Outer space, the moon, planets, and stars have ignited our curiosity and filled us with wonder for centuries.</p>



<p>Our quest to understand our cosmic environment has evolved to include studying the invisible forces that shield our planet. One such force is the magnetic field that protects Earth from incident solar radiation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lexi-and-the-artemis-era">LEXI and the Artemis era</h2>



<p>With NASA's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grow-plants-on-moon-by-2026-nasa-artemis-iii-mission/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Artemis</a> program, a new chapter in space exploration is about to begin.</p>



<p>Setting foot in this new era is LEXI (Lunar Environment Heliospheric X-ray Imager), an instrument delivered as part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative to the moon.</p>



<p>LEXI will capture the first global images of Earth's magnetic field. </p>



<p>The journey kickstarts at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost Lander hosting LEXI.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lunar-landing-with-an-earthly-objective">Lunar landing with an earthly objective</h2>



<p>Upon successful landing, LEXI will jolt into action, focusing its gaze back towards Earth. </p>



<p>During an intense, six-day session, this innovative device will record images of X-rays originating from the boundaries of our planet's extensive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mysterious-solar-shockwave-has-cracked-earths-magnetosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">magnetosphere</a>.</p>



<p>This visualization will provide insights into how the magnetosphere responds to space weather and cosmic forces. </p>



<p>The images will also reveal the susceptibility of our planet’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-magnetic-field-dances-with-solar-wind/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">magnetic shield</a> to streams of charged solar particles that can create auroras and potentially damage our infrastructure.</p>



<p>“We’re trying to get this big picture of Earth’s space environment. A lot of physics can be esoteric or difficult to follow without years of specific training, but this will be science that you can see,” explained Brian Walsh, a space physicist at <a href="https://www.bu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Boston University</a> and the principal investigator of LEXI. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lexi-s-view-of-the-magnetosphere">LEXI's view of the magnetosphere </h2>



<p>Streams of particles from the Sun known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-solar-wind-which-creates-beautiful-auroras-on-earth-is-now-less-mysterious/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solar winds</a> create low-energy X-rays when they collide with Earth's magnetic field - a force field known as the magnetosphere.</p>



<p>Previously, these X-rays were only detectable through a patchwork of observations from various satellites and instruments. </p>



<p>But LEXI, stationed on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-earth-get-its-moon-a-new-theory-has-emerged/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Moon</a>, will have an unobstructed view of the entire magnetopause, which is the outer edge of Earth's magnetic field.</p>



<p>Here on Earth, the team will track how the magnetosphere expands, contracts, and changes its shape in response to the solar wind's strength.</p>



<p>“We expect to see the magnetosphere breathing out and breathing in for the first time," noted Hyunju Connor, an astrophysicist and the NASA lead scientist for LEXI.</p>



<p>"When the solar wind is very strong, the magnetosphere will shrink and push backward toward Earth, and then expand when the solar wind weakens." </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-journey-years-in-the-making">A journey years in the making</h2>



<p>LEXI's journey began a decade ago, with a Goddard-based team testing the technology needed to detect low-energy X-rays across a broad field of view.</p>



<p>The instrument was then known as STORM. It was launched into space on a sounding rocket in 2012, and collected images before returning to Earth.</p>



<p>The imager was displayed at Goddard, and sat there until a call for CLPS projects came. Walsh saw an opportunity for the instrument to contribute from the lunar surface.</p>



<p>“We’d break the glass - not literally - but remove it, restore it, and refurbish it, and that would allow us to look back and get this global picture that we’ve never had before,” Walsh explained.</p>



<p>With some minor refurbishments, STORM was reinvented as LEXI and is now prepared to revisit space. </p>



<p>“There’s a lot of really rich science we can get from this,” said Walsh.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-uncovering-mysteries-of-the-universe">Uncovering mysteries of the universe</h2>



<p>NASA's CLPS model permits commercial delivery services to the moon, thus promoting the growth of the industry while supporting long-term lunar exploration.</p>



<p>As a primary customer for CLPS deliveries, NASA seeks to share flights with other future customers. </p>



<p>NASA Goddard is a principal science collaborator on LEXI, while NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center manages the development of seven of the 10 CLPS payloads on Firefly’s Blue Ghost lunar lander, including LEXI.</p>



<p>Our fascination with the cosmos will continue to drive us to uncover the mysteries of the universe.</p>



<p>And with endeavors like NASA's Artemis campaign and instruments like LEXI, we inch closer to understanding the nature of the forces that protect us every day.</p>

<p>Scientists analyzed neuritic plaques — protein clusters that characterize Alzheimer's — while mapping each participant's exposure to PM2.5 particles based on residential location and surrounding traffic density. The correlation proved more alarming than anticipated. Individuals experiencing higher pollution exposure showed nearly double the likelihood of elevated plaque accumulation in brain tissue.</p>

<p>The research team discovered that pollution exposure during the final year before death demonstrated the strongest association with brain changes. This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-vulnerability-patterns"><strong>Genetic vulnerability patterns</strong></h2>



<p>Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-implications"><strong>Public health implications</strong></h2>



<p>These findings, published in <em><a href="https://www.neurology.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neurology</a></em>, underscore the critical importance of air quality regulations in urban planning. <p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. <p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>

<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
