<p>Inside our bodies, countless decisions play out silently at the cellular level. Some cells divide, some die, and others are forced out when they no longer serve their purpose. </p>



<p>A study from <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King’s College London</a> and the <a href="https://www.crick.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Francis Crick Institute</a> reveals that epithelial cells use electricity to spot weak neighbors and remove them. This breakthrough offers fresh insight into how diseases like cancer and stroke arise when energy balance within cells is disturbed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-renew-constantly">Cells renew constantly</h2>



<p>Epithelial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hemifusome-newly-discovered-organelle-inside-human-cells-with-immense-potential/">cells</a> form the barrier that lines organs, renewing rapidly to stay protective. Their balance depends on extrusion, the process of ejecting damaged or excess cells. This keeps tissues tightly packed and efficient. </p>



<p>If extrusion falters, cell numbers become chaotic, creating openings for disease. Without this constant regulation, unhealthy cells may linger, disrupt organ integrity, and interfere with critical signaling pathways. </p>



<p>Over time, these disturbances can weaken the protective barrier, encourage unchecked growth, and increase vulnerability to conditions such as cancer, chronic inflammation, or infections that compromise overall tissue health and resilience.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-electricity-targets-weak-cells">Electricity targets weak cells</h2>



<p>Earlier work showed that overcrowding forces some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-the-first-cells-life-form-on-earth-scientists-think-they-finally-figured-it-out/">cells</a> to be squeezed out mechanically. The latest discovery goes further. It shows that extrusion is not random but targets energy-poor cells. Crowding pushes sodium into cells through specialized ion channels, altering their electrical signals. </p>



<p>Healthy cells restore balance, but weak ones cannot, triggering shrinkage and eventual extrusion. This reveals a precise surveillance system where tissues actively monitor cellular energy, ensuring only the strongest cells remain. </p>



<p>Such control preserves organ stability, while defects in this mechanism may promote disease progression and unchecked cellular growth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-sense-crowding-with-electricity">Cells sense crowding with electricity</h2>



<p>The researchers noticed a striking prelude to extrusion: cells briefly shrank before being expelled. This stage, termed homeostatic early shrinkage, reflects water leaving the cell. </p>



<p>Roughly 70 percent of extruding cells undergo this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cells-vomit-waste-to-speed-up-healing-in-our-body/">shrinkage</a>. It is not caused by contractile forces but by ion channels regulating water movement. Key players include the potassium channels Kv1.1 and Kv1.2, and the chloride channel SWELL1.</p>



<p>The study revealed that an epithelial sodium channel, ENaC, senses crowding. It acts as a tension detector, letting sodium rush in when cells press against one another.</p>



<p>If a cell has enough ATP, it pumps sodium back out and stabilizes. If not, depolarization occurs, potassium and chloride exit, water follows, and the cell shrinks, crossing the threshold that triggers extrusion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-low-energy-as-a-trigger">Low energy as a trigger</h2>



<p>Time-lapse experiments revealed that cells destined for extrusion show falling ATP levels before they depolarize and shrink. When ATP levels were artificially lowered, extrusion increased. </p>



<p>This shows energy deficiency directly selects <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-space-changes-our-cells-insights-from-the-iss/">cells</a> for removal. In essence, epithelial tissue runs a built-in fitness test: cells unable to maintain their electrical balance are expelled.</p>



<p>"We see this sodium channel acting as a sensor, exposing cells with the least amount of energy and targeting those cells for death," noted study lead author Dr. Saranne Mitchell. </p>



<p>"This mechanism gives epithelia a constant surveillance system to rapidly detect weak cells and remove them. It's like an electrical quality-control check, keeping tissues robust and functional."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-diseases">Implications for diseases</h2>



<p>The study highlights how epithelial tissues are not passive layers but dynamic communities constantly testing their members. By identifying weaker cells early, they can preserve strength and protect organ function.</p>



<p>"By revealing that cells with low energy are targeted for extrusion, our work also adds a new layer into how metabolism can impact many diseases," said Professor Jody Rosenblatt.</p>



<p>"This new insight could suggest how overconsumption, through eating more and consuming more calories, might override this 'low energy trigger' for extrusion and prevent the elimination of defective cells, allowing them to accumulate into cancers." </p>



<p>"It might also reveal how energy deprivation following a stroke, caused by impacted blood supply, could lead to excess extrusion and organ damage."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-use-electricity-effectively">Cells use electricity effectively</h2>



<p>This model highlights energy sufficiency as a deciding factor in cell survival. Much like how mitochondria regulate apoptosis, epithelial extrusion uses energy balance as a checkpoint. </p>



<p>The findings also connect to conditions like cystic fibrosis and cancer, where ion channel malfunctions are common. By linking ion flow, energy, and crowding, this study reframes how tissues maintain integrity.</p>



<p>The discovery paints epithelia as more than static barriers. They are dynamic, electrically sensitive tissues constantly probing their members for weakness. </p>



<p>Cells that cannot meet the energy demands are removed for the greater good of the tissue. Even the faintest electrical flicker within these cellular communities can tip the balance between health and disease.</p>

<p>Antarctic sea ice has long been a focal point in the evolving landscape of our world’s climate. The Southern Ocean, which encircles the icy landmass of Antarctica, remained an enigma for decades.</p>



<p>Despite rising global temperatures, the maximum winter sea ice cover in this region either stayed constant or increased slightly from the late 1970s through to 2015.</p>



<p>However, the waves of change reached these icy waters in 2016. A sequence of years with dwindling sea ice coverage culminated in a record low in 2023. </p>



<p>By September 2024, the most recent winter peak, the ice cover hovered close to that record low.</p>



<p>What follows is a captivating deep-dive into Antarctic sea ice, as researchers from the <a href="https://www.washington.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Washington</a> unravel the mystery behind this precipitous decline in the Southern Ocean.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-antarctic-sea-ice-mystery">The Antarctic sea ice mystery</h2>



<p>So, what exactly led to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-sea-ice-extent-hit-a-record-low-this-month/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">record low sea ice cover in 2023</a> - an event so severe that it was over five standard deviations away from the average?</p>



<p>The researchers found that the culprits were warming Southern Ocean conditions and changes in wind patterns months prior.</p>



<p>The winter ice area was 2.2 million square kilometers (849,424 square miles) less than the average, which equates approximately to a chunk twelve times the size of Washington State. </p>



<p>To put it into perspective, ice lost would cover Texas three times over.</p>



<p>The goal of the research is to enhance sea ice coverage forecasts in the region of the South Pole. </p>



<p>The predictions could provide valuable insights into future sea ice loss, allowing for improvements in regional and global weather and climate models.</p>



<p>"Since 2015, total Antarctic sea ice area has dramatically declined. We show that winter Antarctic sea ice has significant predictability at six- to nine-month lead times," noted study lead author Zac Espinosa.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-culprits-wind-and-ocean-temperatures">The culprits: Wind and ocean temperatures</h2>



<p>Using a global climate model, the research team explored how different factors affect the Southern Ocean’s sea ice. </p>



<p>These factors include air and ocean temperatures, as well as longer-term weather patterns such as El Niño and La Niña.</p>



<p>However, the team discovered that the 2023 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/el-nino-event-may-push-earth-towards-its-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">El Niño</a> played a less important role in this phenomenon than previously assumed. </p>



<p>Instead, a pattern of regional winds explained almost 70% of the record-low winter sea ice cover in 2023.</p>



<p>These winds caused ocean mixing that pulled deep warm waters to the surface, thus hindering sea ice growth.</p>



<p>"It's interesting that, despite how unusual the winter sea ice conditions were in 2023 and again in 2024, our results show they were remarkably predictable over 6 months in advance," said study co-author Edward Blanchard-Wrigglesworth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forecasting-future-sea-ice-loss">Forecasting future sea ice loss</h2>



<p>The ripple effect of these discoveries extends beyond solving an Antarctic mystery. </p>



<p>Antarctic sea ice plays a critical role in influencing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-reveals-the-oceans-hidden-influence-on-global-weather-patterns/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global weather patterns</a>, reflecting sunlight, and interacting with ocean currents in the Southern Hemisphere. </p>



<p>Not to mention, it’s vital for marine and coastal ecosystems.</p>



<p>"Our success at predicting these major sea ice loss events so far in advance demonstrates our understanding of the mechanism that caused them. Our model and methods are geared up to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/artificial-intelligence-can-predict-the-future-of-arctic-sea-ice/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">predict future sea ice loss</a> events," said co-author Cecilia Bitz, reflecting on the significance of these findings.</p>



<p>With summer approaching in the Southern Hemisphere, the current extent of Antarctic sea ice remains close to a record low. </p>



<p>But now, with this research, we are better equipped to understand, predict, and prepare for these events.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-implications-of-sea-ice-decline">Global implications of sea ice decline</h2>



<p>The implications of this dramatic loss of Antarctic sea ice extend far beyond the icy waters of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-southern-ocean-plays-a-major-role-in-capturing-co2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Southern Ocean</a>. </p>

<p>Scientists are constantly exploring novel approaches to enhance the efficiency and reach of these therapies. </p>



<p>A recent study conducted by a team of experts from the <a href="https://www.upenn.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Pennsylvania</a> suggests an intriguing alternative to boost the performance of CAR T cell therapy. </p>



<p>The research suggests that a metabolite produced by the ketogenic diet may be a powerful weapon to enhance this cancer treatment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-new-approach-to-cancer-treatment">A new approach to cancer treatment</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/turning-cancers-defense-against-itself-using-novel-car-t-therapy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CAR T cell therapy</a> is a unique treatment path that enhances a patient's immune system to fight off cancer. Developed by experts at Penn Medicine, this approach has successfully treated thousands of individuals with blood cancers.</p>



<p>However, the effectiveness of CAR T cell therapy has not been uniformly consistent or reliable for all patients. With this in mind, the research team was compelled to adopt an unconventional method to enhance the therapy's efficiency.</p>



<p>Rather than focusing on genetic engineering to tweak T cells, the experts decided to target T cells through <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plant-based-diet-improves-health-in-women-with-breast-cancer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diet</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fighting-cancer-with-a-ketogenic-diet">Fighting cancer with a ketogenic diet </h2>



<p>The team examined the impact of different diets (keto, high-fiber, high-fat, high-protein, high-cholesterol, and a control diet) on the tumor-fighting abilities of CAR T cells.</p>



<p>The standout performer was the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ketogenic-diet-improves-mental-and-metabolic-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ketogenic diet</a>, which resulted in superior tumor control and survival in mouse models of diffuse-large B-cell lymphoma.</p>



<p>A closer look revealed that a metabolite called beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) played a crucial role in this enhanced effect. BHB is generated by the liver in response to a ketogenic diet.</p>



<p>Previous work by the team demonstrated that BHB can significantly suppress the growth of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seven-major-risk-factors-predict-colorectal-cancer-in-men/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">colorectal tumors</a>.</p>



<p>Puneeth Guruprasad, a medical student in the Perelman School of Medicine, elaborated on this dietary approach to enhancing cancer treatment.</p>



<p>"Our theory is that CAR T cells prefer BHB as a fuel source rather than standard sugars in our body, such as glucose. So, increasing the levels of BHB in the body gives the CAR T cells more power to take out the cancer cells," said Guruprasad.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ketogenic-diet-metabolite-and-cancer-treatment">Ketogenic diet metabolite and cancer treatment </h2>



<p>The team then experimented with BHB supplementation alongside CAR T cell therapy in lab models of human cancer. </p>



<p>The results were impressive. The experts observed almost absolute destruction of cancer in most cases, and amplified CAR T cell growth and activation.</p>



<p>The study did not stop there. The researchers also analyzed blood samples from patients who had previously received CAR T cell therapy. They found that higher BHB levels were associated with better CAR T cell growth in patients.</p>



<p>Additionally, upon examining the T cells of healthy volunteers who took a BHB supplement, they found similar energy production changes in normal T cells after exposure to BHB.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-immunotherapy">The future of immunotherapy</h2>



<p>Research on the role of dietary interventions in enhancing cancer immunotherapy response has been carried out before. </p>



<p>However, unlike previous studies that pointed to influences via the gut microbiome, this study indicates that the BHB effect comes from metabolic changes in the blood.</p>



<p>The remarkable theory that BHB supplementation could enhance CAR T cell therapy response will soon be tested in a Phase I clinical trial at Penn Medicine's Abramson Cancer Center.</p>



<p>"We're talking about an intervention that is relatively cheap and has low toxicity potential," said Maayan Levy, one of the researchers. "I'm excited to think about how a fairly simple approach like this could be combined with dietary interventions or other, more traditional approaches, to enhance the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/keto-diet-anti-cancer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">anti-cancer</a> effect."</p>



<p>The clinical trial will focus on patients with relapsed or refractory large B-cell lymphoma who are receiving commercially available anti-CD19 CAR T cell therapy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-research-is-needed">Further research is needed </h2>



<p>The experts are enthusiastic about the results of their study, but also call for caution as further research is needed. </p>



<p>"At this point, the research is still preliminary, and we're not making any dietary or supplement recommendations to patients based on this study until we have definitive clinical evidence," said study co-author Marco Ruella.</p>



<p>The path to defeating cancer is long and challenging, but with continued dedication and innovative ideas such as dietary supplements, we have renewed hope.</p>

<p>Ever felt terrible about giving a late gift to a friend for their birthday or Christmas? Well, a recent study brings good news: your friend probably doesn’t mind as much as you think.</p>



<p>Researchers found a notable difference between how gift givers and recipients view late gifts. While givers fear causing harm to their relationships, recipients are more forgiving. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-send-that-late-gift">Send that late gift</h2>



<p>"Go ahead and send that late gift, because it doesn’t seem to bother most people as much as givers fear," said Cory Haltman, lead author of the study and doctoral student in marketing at The Ohio State University’s <a href="https://fisher.osu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fisher College of Business</a>.</p>



<p>The research involved six studies examining how people <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/we-often-undervalue-the-most-meaningful-experiences-in-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">perceive</a> late gifts. Interestingly, the results debunk the common belief that timeliness is essential. </p>



<p>A survey revealed that 65% of Americans think occasion-based gifts should arrive on time. However, the study showed that recipients do not value punctuality as highly as givers assume.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-perception-gap">The perception gap</h2>



<p>In one study, undergraduate students were asked to imagine either giving or receiving a birthday gift - a pint of ice cream - that arrived on time or two weeks late.</p>



<p>Those imagining themselves as givers believed a late gift would harm their relationship more than recipients did. This suggests givers place greater importance on the social norm of timely gift-giving than receivers.</p>



<p>Another experiment showed that givers worried late presents might signal a lack of care. </p>



<p>"One of the key social functions of gift giving is to communicate care for the gift recipient, so it is not surprising that people fear a negative impact on their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-brain-literally-changes-based-on-daily-activities-and-lifestyle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">relationship</a> if they are late with their present," said study co-author Rebecca Reczek, a professor of marketing at Ohio State.</p>



<p>However, recipients didn’t share this perspective. "They didn’t see a late gift as signaling a lack of care. They were more forgiving than those giving late gifts thought they would be," Haltman explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-effort-over-timeliness">Effort over timeliness</h2>



<p>The fear of giving a late gift even influenced how people approached gift selection. </p>



<p>In one experiment, participants said they would feel less guilty about a late gift if they had made it more personalized. For example, creating a custom gift basket instead of purchasing a pre-made one helped ease their concerns.</p>



<p>"People felt that if they put extra effort into the gift, made it more personalized, that can make up for it being late," Reczek said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-late-is-too-late">How late is too late?</h2>



<p>While recipients tend to forgive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/time-flies-by-much-faster-as-we-get-older-human-perception/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">late</a> presents, the study found a limit. Both givers and recipients agreed that the later the gift, the more harm it could cause to the relationship. </p>



<p>Participants were asked to imagine gifts arriving two days, two weeks, or two months late. The later the gift, the more negative the perceived impact - but recipients still viewed the harm as less severe than givers did.</p>



<p>The ultimate faux pas? Not giving a gift at all. Another study confirmed that both givers and recipients believed skipping a gift entirely was worse for a relationship than being significantly late. </p>



<p>"Late is definitely better than never when it comes to giving a gift," noted Haltman.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-late-gift-givers">Lessons for late gift givers</h2>



<p>The findings highlight a mismatch in how givers and recipients view late gifts. Givers tend to overestimate the importance of timeliness, while recipients focus more on the gesture itself.</p>



<p>"If you’re late giving a gift, put yourself in the role of receiving a late gift. Based on our results, we believe that should reduce your worry that the lateness is going to be harmful to your relationship," said Reczek.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deciding-what-to-gift">Deciding what to gift</h2>



<p>Choosing the right gift can be just as stressful as worrying about its timing. Givers often fear that their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/happiness-influences-online-shopping-habits/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">choice</a> may reflect poorly on their relationship, but a little extra thought can go a long way in easing these concerns.</p>



<p>Personalized gifts are a great way to show care and effort, especially when giving a late present. For instance, a custom-made photo album or a handpicked gift basket tailored to the recipient’s tastes can feel more meaningful than a generic item. This aligns with the study’s findings that people feel less worried about late gifts when they put in extra effort to make them special.</p>



<p>However, personalization doesn’t have to be complex or expensive. Simple yet thoughtful gifts, such as a book in their favorite genre, a subscription to a service they love, or even a heartfelt letter, can communicate your care.</p>



<p>It’s also essential to consider the recipient's preferences and interests. Ask yourself: What would make them feel valued? For some, a practical gift like kitchen gadgets or a journal might resonate, while others might prefer an experience, such as concert tickets or a spa voucher.</p>



<p>Ultimately, the study highlights that it’s not about the grandeur of the gift but the intention behind it. A well-chosen present - whether timely or late - can speak volumes about your thoughtfulness and strengthen your bond. </p>



<p>So, focus on what the gift represents rather than overthinking the timing. "Just make sure you give the gift," Haltman concludes.</p>

<p>In a cosmos millions of light years away, a bustling city of galaxies called the Spiderweb protocluster is taking shape. </p>



<p>From Earth, this celestial city might look like a confetti of stars scattered across a velvet sky, but it's much more than that.</p>



<p>It's a fascinating example of how galaxies come together to form larger structures - a grand construction that's been underway for over 10 billion years.</p>



<p>Guided by the remarkable viewing capabilities of the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope, a group of astronomers have embarked on a mission to better comprehend this protocluster and to reveal new <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/james-webb-captures-galaxies-that-are-too-old-to-exist/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies</a> hidden within it.</p>



<p>The telescope's ability to perceive infrared light, which effortlessly passes through cosmic dust compared to visible light, enabled the experts to observe regions of the Spiderweb that were previously concealed by this dust.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-viewing-galaxies-during-their-adolescence">Viewing galaxies during their adolescence </h2>



<p>"We are observing the build-up of one the largest structures in the universe, a city of galaxies in construction,” said Jose M. Perez-Martinez of the <a href="https://www.iac.es/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias</a> and the <a href="https://www.ull.es/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Universidad de La Laguna</a> in Spain.</p>



<p>“We know that most galaxies in local galaxy clusters (the biggest metropolises of the universe) are old and not very active, whereas in this work we are looking at these objects during their adolescence."</p>



<p>"As this city in construction grows, their physical properties will also be affected. Now, Webb is giving us new insights into the build-up of such structures for the first time.”</p>



<p>The Webb telescope was used to study the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hydrothermal-vents-earths-first-living-beings-hydrogen-gas-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hydrogen gas</a> and reveal new galaxies obscured within the cluster. In about 3.5 hours of sightseeing through Webb's eyes, the astronomers made some unexpected discoveries.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surprising-revelations-in-the-spiderweb-cluster">Surprising revelations in the Spiderweb cluster</h2>



<p>"As expected, we found new galaxy cluster members, but we were surprised to find more than expected,” noted Rhythm Shimakawa of Waseda University in Japan.</p>



<p>A surprising discovery was that the previously-known galaxy members were not as dust-filled or obscured as anticipated. This finding debunked the conventional belief that galaxy growth is primarily triggered by galaxy interactions or mergers that induce <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/serpens-nebula-image-reveals-how-stars-are-born/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">star formation</a>.</p>



<p>“We now figure this can instead be explained by star formation that is fueled through gas accumulating at different locations all across the object’s large-scale structure," noted Helmut Dannerbauer of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias in Spain.</p>



<p>As the astronomers continue to explore this cosmic city, they plan to examine the newly discovered galaxy cluster members. They aim to establish their existence through more detailed and spectroscopic observations using the Webb telescope.</p>

<p>This intriguing question was explored by Dr. Simon Dubé, a research fellow in The Kinsey Institute at Indiana University. According to his study, there's more to emojis than meets the eye.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-are-attachment-styles">What are attachment styles?</h2>



<p>Attachment styles describe how individuals form <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/future-tech-will-track-emotions-through-changes-in-our-skin/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emotional bonds</a> and behave in relationships. They are influenced by early experiences with caregivers. Psychologists categorize attachment styles into four main types:</p>

<p>To comprehend our emoji use behavior, Dr. Dubé and his colleagues examined associations between emoji use frequency, attachment style, and emotional intelligence in a sample of 320 adults. </p>



<p>Emotional intelligence, the ability to process and manage one’s emotions and those of others, plays a crucial role here. On the other hand, as discussed, attachment styles dictate how individuals relate to others in close relationships.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-different-attachment-styles-and-emojis">Different attachment styles and emojis</h2>



<p>The study revealed fascinating patterns. For example, people with higher emotional intelligence are better at understanding and managing their own emotions, as well as recognizing and responding to the emotions of others.</p>



<p>As a result, they tend to use emojis more frequently because emojis help them express their emotions clearly in digital conversations. </p>



<p>Those with secure attachment also use emojis more often because they feel emotionally secure and connected to others. </p>



<p>Emojis are a way for them to communicate affection and warmth in relationships, including with friends and romantic partners.</p>



<p>On the other hand, people with an avoidant attachment style tend to avoid emotional closeness and may find it difficult to express their emotions openly. </p>



<p>They often distance themselves from others, especially in close relationships.</p>



<p>As a result, they use fewer emojis, particularly with friends and romantic partners, because they may prefer to keep their emotions more guarded or may not feel as comfortable using symbols that express affection or vulnerability.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gender-and-emoji-usage">Gender and emoji usage</h2>



<p>Dr. Dubé's study also brings a gendered perspective to the table, showing that women use <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/doctors-are-using-emoji-to-diagnose-patients-in-clinics-and-hospitals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emojis</a> with friends and family more than men.</p>



<p>However, if women have higher levels of attachment avoidance, they tend to send and receive emojis less frequently with friends and romantic partners. </p>



<p>Similarly, men with higher levels of attachment avoidance send fewer emojis to their partners.</p>



<p>These patterns open an exciting dialogue on how emojis mirror our emotional landscapes and relationship styles, transcending their original purpose as simple graphical symbols.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-limitations-of-the-study">Limitations of the study</h2>



<p>Despite its findings, this research from the <a href="https://kinseyinstitute.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kinsey Institute</a> has its limitations. </p>



<p>The majority of the participants were white, educated, married, English-speaking heterosexual individuals residing in the U.S. Hence, the insights do not reflect the entire spectrum of cultural and demographic diversity in emoji usage.</p>



<p>Nevertheless, as the experts noted, this research opens new avenues at the intersection of psychology, computer-mediated communication, and the study of attachment and emotional intelligence. </p>



<p>By exploring further, we can better understand human behavior in the digital age.</p>



<p>"The way we interact during virtual communications may reveal something more about ourselves. It is not just a smiley face or heart emoji: it's a way to convey meaning and communicate more effectively, and how you use it tells us something about you," said the researchers.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-harnessing-microorganisms-a-solution-in-the-sand">Harnessing microorganisms: A solution in the sand</h2>



<p>In a sprawling complex, nestled in the desert north of Jeddah, a promising new project is underway.</p>



<p>The focus is on utilizing microorganisms to lessen the energy expense of treating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/un-report-wastewater-is-a-hidden-solution-to-the-climate-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wastewater</a>.</p>

<p>Hong explains that the process capitalizes on microorganisms to convert carbon into methane gas, which powers the facility while purifying wastewater.</p>

<p>As part of its Middle East Green Initiative, the Kingdom plans to plant a staggering 10 billion trees and rehabilitate over 74 million hectares of land. For this ambitious plan to succeed, effective water and soil management are key.</p>



<p>At the same university, Himanshu Mishra, who is an environmental science and engineering expert, offers another innovative solution. His team believes they have created a product capable of transforming Saudi's desert sand into cultivable land.</p>



<p>Their secret weapon? Carbon-enriched compost derived from an abundant local resource – chicken manure.</p>



<p>This advanced compost, which retains vital nutrients and water while enhancing microbial biodiversity, is already turning arid soils into verdant landscapes.</p>



<p>Moreover, Saudi Arabia could potentially export this carbonated topsoil along with the supporting technology, which would broaden the scope of their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-day-initiative-forest-restoration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">green initiatives</a>.</p>

<p>Though rife with potential, scaling such endeavors requires substantial financial backing and political support. </p>



<p>"We really need venture funding and investment to demonstrate their effectiveness on a large scale," noted Hong.</p>



<p>Indeed, securing funding for green tech startups isn't a walk in the park. It's "extremely hard," said John Robinson, an investor and partner at Mazarine Ventures. Despite the challenges, some promising startups manage to attract private investors.</p>



<p>As the world's leading exporter of crude oil, Saudi Arabia's fervent defense of this resource casts a shadow over its green ambitions.</p>



<p>In the face of it all, the Kingdom continues to invest in technologies like carbon capture and hydrogen production as part of its touted "circular carbon economy."</p>



<p> Critics argue this is merely greenwashing, aimed at perpetuating fossil fuel investments.</p>

<p>In the last few years, observers have noticed unusual streaks of mauve and white lights called Steve, along with a glowing green feature known as the picket fence, appearing near the usual displays of auroras.</p>



<p>The more familiar auroras, with their greens, reds, and purples, have long been attributed to energized particles from the solar wind interacting with Earth’s upper atmosphere. But these new features raise fresh questions.</p>



<p>The mystery of the beautiful lights called "Steve" and the picket fence first came to light in 2018, when scientists realized that their properties differ sharply from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/auroras-southern-united-states-this-week-huge-solar-storm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">normal auroras</a>. </p>



<p>After a time, many wondered if these lights might share the same origins as the classic auroras, or if they might arise from a different set of conditions. </p>



<p>Claire Gasque, a graduate student in physics at the <a href="https://www.berkeley.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Berkeley</a>, has stepped up to propose a new explanation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-closer-look-at-the-steve-lights">A closer look at the Steve lights</h2>



<p>The night sky often offers surprises, and sometimes these surprises challenge long-standing thinking and call for detailed study. </p>



<p>Gasque, working at the Space Sciences Laboratory (<a href="https://www.ssl.berkeley.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SSL</a>) at Berkeley, suggests that a separate physical process could be responsible for these unusual lights. </p>



<p>She argues that the time has come to question old assumptions and look for new answers.</p>



<p>“This would upend our modeling of what creates light and the energy in the aurora in some cases,” Gasque said. “It’s really cool, one of the biggest mysteries in space physics right now.”</p>



<p>Gasque believes that a <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a> mission to send a rocket into an aurora would help confirm her ideas. </p>



<p>With the sun’s activity ramping up in its <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/northern-lights-activity-will-intensify-over-the-next-18-months/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">11-year cycle</a>, this might be a good moment to catch rare phenomena and learn something new in the process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-mechanism-is-making-the-sky-glow">New mechanism is making the sky glow</h2>



<p>The idea of launching rockets to measure electric and magnetic fields inside these glowing events has gained momentum. </p>



<p>Gasque thinks that electric fields parallel to <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/earths-magnetic-field-origin-structure-and-impact-on-humanity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth’s magnetic field</a> might be creating the picket fence colors. </p>



<p>Traditional auroras come from charged particles streaming down from space and energizing oxygen and nitrogen molecules, producing familiar colors. </p>



<p>But Steve’s purple or mauve tones do not match the pattern, and the picket fence appears in latitudes where auroras typically do not form. Gasque sees this as a sign that something else is going on.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-electrons-in-the-atmosphere">Electrons in the atmosphere</h2>



<p>Gasque’s research shows that a parallel electric field of about 100 millivolts per meter at an altitude of about 110 km could energize electrons enough to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/steve-phenomenon-not-aurora-has-dawn-side-twin-swarm-satellites-discovery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">produce the observed colors</a>. </p>



<p>She also points out that this region has special conditions, like reduced plasma density and more neutral atoms. This environment might allow the field to do its work without shorting out.</p>



<p>“If you look at the spectrum of the picket fence, it’s much more green than you would expect. And there’s none of the blue that’s coming from the ionization of nitrogen,” Gasque said. </p>



<p>“What that’s telling us is that there’s only a specific energy range of electrons that can create those colors, and they can’t be coming from way out in space down into the atmosphere, because those particles have too much energy.” </p>



<p>Instead, she said, “the light from the picket fence is being created by particles that have to be energized right there in space by a parallel electric field, which is a completely different mechanism than any of the aurora that we’ve studied or known before.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-steve-lights-get-a-new-layer-of-complexity">Steve lights get a new layer of complexity</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.ssl.berkeley.edu/full-directory/name/brian-harding/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brian Harding</a>, an assistant research physicist at SSL and a co-author on Gasque’s work, appreciates the significance of these findings. </p>



<p>“The really interesting thing about Claire’s paper is that we’ve known for a couple of years now that the Steve spectrum is telling us there’s some very strange physics going on," Harding enthused.</p>



<p>"We just didn’t know what it was. Claire’s paper showed that parallel electric fields are capable of explaining this strange spectrum.”</p>



<p>The team plans to set their sights first on something called the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/auroras-are-a-visual-warning-of-shocks-to-earths-magnetic-field/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">enhanced aurora</a>, which is basically this bright layer that’s embedded in the normal aurora. </p>



<p>"The colors are similar to the picket fence in that there’s not as much blue in them, and there’s more green from oxygen and red from nitrogen," Gasque explained. </p>



<p>"The hypothesis is that these are also created by parallel electric fields, but they are a lot more common than the picket fence."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nasa-we-need-your-help">NASA, we need your help</h2>



<p>They have submitted a proposal to NASA for a sounding rocket campaign that, if selected, would launch from Alaska. </p>



<p>The team aims to fly a rocket through that enhanced layer to actually measure those parallel electric fields for the first time, and also send one higher to distinguish the conditions from those that cause the auroras.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-next-for-the-steve-lights">What's next for the Steve lights?</h2>



<p>Gasque credits cooperation with experts focused on different parts of the atmosphere for making progress. </p>



<p>She hopes that a successful campaign will pave the way for a direct measurement of Steve and the picket fence themselves. </p>



<p>The plan is to learn how these electric fields form and what they mean for the transfer of energy between Earth and space. Harding expects future work to break new ground in understanding these electric fields. </p>



<p>“It’s fair to say that there’s going to be a lot of study in the future about how those electric fields got there, what waves they are or aren’t associated with, and what that means for the larger energy transfer between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/geomagnetic-storms-are-influenced-by-earths-atmosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth’s atmosphere</a> and space,” Harding concluded. </p>



<p>“We really don’t know. Claire’s paper is the first step in the chain of that understanding.”</p>



<p>If NASA gives the green light, the team could start making these measurements very soon. As the solar cycle moves forward, new opportunities will arise to see these phenomena again. </p>



<p>Gasque’s work suggests that Steve and the picket fence are something else entirely, reshaping how scientists look at lights in the night sky and the processes that power them.</p>

Sky lights called "Steve" are challenging what we know about auroras

In the last few years, observers have noticed unusual streaks...

<p>For decades, many people pictured ancient humans as relying mostly on stone. New wood findings from early human settlements at Kalambo Falls in Zambia suggest that view may need adjusting.</p>



<p>Researchers have uncovered wooden structures dating back about 476,000 years, and they don't seem like random sticks piled together. </p>



<p>Instead, they appear to be carefully shaped and joined, possibly forming a platform or the base of a shelter. Such woodworking extends far beyond what was once expected of humans living so long ago.</p>



<p>Shortly after making this discovery, Professor Larry Barham from the <a href="https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Liverpool</a> and his team identified a wedge, a digging stick, a log cut with the help of tools, and a branch with a deliberate notch. </p>



<p>These artifacts were preserved thanks to the waterlogged conditions at <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalambo_Falls" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kalambo Falls</a>. The makers lived well before <em>Homo sapiens</em> arose and may have been <em>Homo heidelbergensis</em> or a related species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-humans-and-the-wooden-age">Early humans and the "wooden age"</h2>



<p>Most knowledge of early humans comes from stone artifacts because stone survives the ages. Wood usually decays, leaving no trace. </p>



<p>Until now, evidence of early human wood use, or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-age-humans-used-tools-to-make-timber-for-woodworking/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">woodworking tools</a>, had been limited to fire, digging sticks, or spears. The Kalambo Falls finds add a new dimension. </p>



<p>They show that some early hominins understood how to shape and join logs. This changes what we know about their abilities and creativity.</p>



<p>“This find has changed how I think about our early ancestors. Forget the label ‘Stone Age,’ look at what these people were doing: they made something new, and large, from wood," Professor Barham enthused.</p>



<p>"They used their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-humans-ancestors-woodworking-sophisticated-techniques/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">intelligence, imagination, and skills</a> to create something they’d never seen before, something that had never previously existed.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-to-date-ancient-wood">How to date ancient wood</h2>



<p>Wood from nearly half a million years ago is rare. The team needed methods beyond traditional approaches to confirm the age. </p>



<p>“At this great age, putting a date on finds is very challenging and we used luminescence dating to do this. These new dating methods have far reaching implications -- allowing us to date much further back in time, to piece together sites that give us a glimpse into human evolution," explained Professor Geoff Duller from <a href="https://www.aber.ac.uk/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aberystwyth University</a>.</p>



<p>"The site at Kalambo Falls had been excavated back in the 1960s when similar pieces of wood were recovered, but they were unable to date them, so the true significance of the site was unclear until now.”</p>



<p>These dating techniques show that the wooden structures belong to a distant era. </p>



<p>By accurately placing these artifacts in time, the team can see how early humans selected materials, planned projects, and adapted to their environment long before modern humans appeared.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-any-of-this-matter">Why does any of this matter?</h2>



<p>Some earlier views imagined a steady line of progress from simple to complex. They suggested that early hominins were not as inventive. </p>



<p>The Kalambo Falls discovery challenges that idea. Here are ancient people who didn’t just pick up whatever lay around. </p>



<p>They shaped wood with purpose and turned it into something with structure. This implies planning and the ability to think ahead.</p>



<p>The focus is not just on the tools they used but on the final product. They took logs and worked them into forms that required <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tool-flint-discovery-challenges-theory-of-human-cultural-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">understanding material properties</a>. </p>



<p>They recognized that certain pieces of wood, cut and fitted together, could create stable surfaces or supports. This level of planning and action was happening far earlier than many had believed possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stone-age-label-no-longer-applies">"Stone Age" label no longer applies</h2>



<p>Calling that period the “<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-age-hunter-gatherers-had-a-very-organized-domestic-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stone Age</a>” may have unintentionally downplayed other materials. The reason stone dominates our understanding of prehistory is that it lasts. </p>



<p>Wood rots, leaving open questions about what was once common. Only under special conditions, like those at Kalambo Falls, can wood survive for so many thousands of centuries.</p>

<p>This site makes it clear that the old labels may need revisiting. Early humans likely exploited a broad range of materials to get by. Perhaps many wooden inventions were lost through time because they decayed. </p>



<p>Now, with direct evidence, we see that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-did-early-humans-first-start-wearing-clothes-and-why-parasites-lice/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early hominins</a> didn’t rely solely on stone. They used wood to make tools, platforms, and other things that shaped their world.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-early-humans-worked-with-wood">How early humans worked with wood</h2>



<p>Wood is not as durable as stone, but it has its advantages. It can be worked into different shapes and is easier to manipulate. For these ancient builders, wood would have been a familiar resource. </p>



<p>They knew which pieces to cut, how to notch branches, and how to create useful items. This knowledge hints at a long tradition of using wood for more than just simple objects.</p>



<p>Their approach to wood may have influenced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-humans-used-interesting-technique-hunt-big-animals-clovis-points/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">how they hunted</a>, gathered food, or constructed living spaces. </p>



<p>The find at Kalambo Falls highlights actions that usually remain invisible, locked away in times too old to remember.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wood-tools-and-early-human-history">Wood, tools, and early human history</h2>



<p>To sum it all up, this new study shows us that human technology and culture did not simply move along one narrow track. People found ways to solve problems long before anyone thought possible. </p>



<p>The Kalambo Falls wood structure nudges us to think about human capabilities in a more flexible way. </p>



<p>Even when brains were smaller and modern humans had not yet appeared, early hominins were still clever enough to shape their environment to meet their needs.</p>



<p>This single discovery does not rewrite the entire story, but it adds details that help round it out. Early humans did more than chip stones -- they worked with what was around them, including wood, to create something purposeful and enduring.</p>



<p>In a world that often underestimates these distant ancestors, the Kalambo Falls find proves they deserve more credit than we once gave them.</p>

World's oldest wooden structure discovery rewrites human history

<p>When we think of testosterone-driven dominance, images of silverback gorillas pounding their chests or executives battling for boardroom supremacy may come to mind. </p>



<p>Traditionally, the narrative of aggression and dominance has belonged to males. But in the dry savannahs of southern Africa, one species flips the script. Here, meerkats females are the competitive and dominant sex due to their testosterone.</p>



<p>Most meerkat mobs, small social groups of these mongoose relatives, are led by a dominant female. She commands with an iron paw - growling, biting, and shoving to maintain order.</p>



<p>This leadership style ensures that subordinates not only obey but also help raise her pups. Now, a recent study reveals that the dominant female’s reign comes at a price, particularly for her offspring.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testosterone-levels-in-meerkat-queens">Testosterone levels in meerkat queens</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/decoding-secret-language-of-meerkats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Meerkat</a> queens owe their dominance to elevated levels of testosterone. During pregnancy, their testosterone can double, surpassing that of their male counterparts. </p>



<p>This hormonal surge strengthens the matriarch’s competitive edge, enabling her to maintain control. However, this advantage comes with a trade-off.</p>



<p>"While this chemical boost gives her a competitive edge and helps her keep the upper hand, it can also take a toll on the health of her offspring," noted <a href="https://duke.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Duke University</a>’s Christine Drea, co-author of the new study.</p>



<p>The research sheds light on the impact of elevated testosterone levels on meerkat pups. Conducted at the Kuruman River Reserve in South Africa’s Kalahari Desert, the study examined 195 meerkats across juvenile and adult stages.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-high-testosterone-impacts-meerkat-health">High testosterone impacts meerkat health</h2>



<p>The researchers analyzed the droppings of meerkat pups for signs of parasitic infections, including tapeworm eggs. </p>



<p>They discovered that pups born to dominant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/female-birds-commit-to-caring-for-young-males-abandon-family-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">females</a>, exposed to heightened testosterone levels in the womb, carried more gut parasites than those of subordinate females.</p>



<p>To confirm the role of maternal testosterone, the team administered a medication to some pregnant dominant females. </p>



<p>This treatment reduced the effects of testosterone during their third trimester. The results were striking: pups from these treated mothers exhibited stronger immune responses and fewer parasites.</p>



<p>Blood tests revealed that these pups had enhanced natural defenses against bacterial infections. Additionally, their chances of surviving past their first year significantly improved. </p>



<p>"The offspring from moms whose androgens were blocked actually survive significantly longer," Drea noted.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testosterone-and-immune-health">Testosterone and immune health</h2>



<p>This study provides the first evidence in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/terror-bird-phorusrhacid-discovery-was-largest-meat-eating-bird-of-its-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mammals</a> that elevated prenatal testosterone can weaken immune function. </p>



<p>The impact was most evident in juvenile meerkats, with the health disparities diminishing as the animals matured.</p>



<p>"There's a health trade-off with testosterone," Drea explained. "It’s actually having an effect on survivorship when the animals are the most vulnerable."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-faced-by-wild-animals">Challenges faced by wild animals</h2>



<p>The findings are part of a broader effort to understand how animals cope with infections in the wild. </p>



<p>Unlike the controlled environment of a laboratory, wild meerkats face a variety of challenges, including social status, hormones, and environmental stressors.</p>



<p>"By studying wild meerkats, we can explore how real-world conditions — factors like social status, hormones, and environmental stressors — interact to influence immune function," said study co-author Kendra Smyth-Kabay, a former graduate student.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meerkat-dominance-beyond-testosterone">Meerkat dominance beyond testosterone</h2>



<p>Meerkat queens do not <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/octopuses-could-dominate-earth-if-humans-vanish/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rise to power</a> through sheer chance. These matriarchs typically inherit their position after the previous leader dies or is ousted.</p>



<p>Once in charge, they exert strict control over breeding within their groups. Subordinate females are often prevented from reproducing, either through physical aggression or by hormonal suppression caused by the dominant female’s presence.</p>



<p>This social structure ensures that the queen’s pups receive the majority of the group’s care and resources. Meerkat queens also have an uncanny ability to recognize and expel potential threats to their reign, including older offspring that may challenge their authority. </p>



<p>Interestingly, their leadership style often involves collaboration as much as it does competition. They rely on the support of loyal subordinates to maintain their dominance and rear their young.</p>



<p>The lifespan of a meerkat queen can vary, but those who maintain their dominance often live longer than subordinates, benefiting from better access to food and protection from predators. </p>



<p>However, the constant stress of defending their position can take a toll, making their reign both a privilege and a burden.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-balance-of-power">A balance of power</h2>



<p>The study highlights the trade-offs in meerkat society. Dominant females gain reproductive success and control, but their pups bear the burden of weakened immunity. These findings provide a glimpse into the complex interplay of hormones, social hierarchy, and health in the animal kingdom.</p>



<p>As researchers continue to examine these dynamics, the fierce matriarchy of meerkats offers valuable insights into the cost of dominance - particularly the role of testosterone in shaping their leadership and its impact on offspring health.</p>



<p>Despite their apparent power, even queens face the consequences of their reign.</p>

<p>According to estimates, the deep <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/first-ice-free-day-in-the-arctic-may-arrive-in-2027/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic</a> Ocean could contain up to 13% of the world’s undiscovered oil reserves and 30% of its natural gas reserves.</p>



<p>Additionally, the region offers a wealth of rare earth elements and metals essential for building modern technologies. </p>



<p>The potential economic benefits of these resources have drawn increasing political and commercial attention, further fueled by the opening of new shipping routes and increased <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-warming-permafrost-melt-devastating-role-accelerating-global-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic</a> tourism.</p>



<p>"Climate change and the melting of sea ice are increasingly facilitating the exploration of the Arctic Ocean, but this also entails major ecological risks," warned Dr. Angelika Brandt from the <a href="https://www.senckenberg.de/en/institutes/senckenberg-research-institute-natural-history-museum-frankfurt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Senckenberg Research Institute</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diverse-and-little-known-habitats">Diverse and little-known habitats</h2>



<p>The Arctic Ocean’s deep-sea habitats host a remarkable variety of life forms, many of which remain poorly studied. </p>



<p>An international team of researchers analyzed 75,404 datasets covering 2,637 deep-sea species. The findings highlight the need for more intensive research and international collaboration to fill existing knowledge gaps.</p>



<p>"Although we have made considerable progress in understanding the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-alters-the-atmosphere-in-the-remote-arctic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic</a> ecosystem with the aid of new technologies and infrastructures, there are still major gaps in our knowledge of the deep-sea communities living on the sea floor - as clearly demonstrated by our new study," said Dr. Brandt.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-characteristics-of-the-arctic">Characteristics of the Arctic</h2>



<p>The researchers examined data from freely accessible databases, non-digitized scientific literature, and information facilities, focusing on samples from areas north of 66 degrees latitude and deeper than 500 meters. Their analysis revealed the following findings.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biodiversity">Biodiversity</h3>



<p>The phylum Arthropoda - that includes isopods and copepods - had the most individual records (21,405). Other prevalent groups included annelids, sponges, and mollusks, with the latter showing the greatest species richness.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unique-species-in-deep-arctic-ocean">Unique species in deep Arctic Ocean</h3>



<p>The brittle star&nbsp;<em>Ophiocten gracilis</em>&nbsp;was found at depths exceeding 1,000 meters during a Polarstern expedition between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geomorphological-diversity">Geomorphological diversity</h3>



<p>The Arctic features diverse geological structures such as submarine canyons, continental slopes, seamounts, and biologically generated formations like cold-water coral reefs.</p>



<p>"Not only did we comprehensively digitize important deep-sea data and publish it in freely accessible databases, but we also collected, checked, and comprehensively analyzed new deep-sea data. This enabled us to show that, contrary to popular belief, the Arctic Ocean actually has a very rich diversity of organisms," explained Dr. Hanieh Saeedi.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gaps-in-data-from-the-deep-arctic">Gaps in data from the deep Arctic</h2>



<p>Despite these advances, significant gaps in knowledge persist, particularly regarding benthic biodiversity in the central Arctic’s deep basins. The study’s habitat maps link faunal groups to specific geomorphological areas, identifying regions with limited data.</p>



<p>"The intergenerational collaboration within the framework of the UN Ocean Decade and the international cooperation with deep-sea experts and the AWI were crucial for this study," stated Dr. Saskia Brix, highlighting the importance of collaboration.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protecting-the-arctic-ecosystem-from-mining">Protecting the Arctic ecosystem from mining</h2>



<p>The Arctic deep sea is far from the lifeless environment early explorers imagined. However, intensified international cooperation and active monitoring of environmental parameters and faunal compositions are critical. </p>



<p>"This is the only way for us to better understand the structure and function of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-industrialization-how-will-it-impact-delicate-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic ecosystem</a> and to ensure that measures are taken to preserve this unique ecosystem, which is of such importance to the northern hemisphere," said Dr. Brix.</p>



<p>"Especially in view of the increasing economic and political interests, the lack of data on benthic biodiversity - particularly in the deep basins of the central Arctic Ocean - poses a significant problem for robust management and conservation measures," noted Dr. Saeedi.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arctic-mining-and-conservation-measures">Arctic mining and conservation measures </h2>



<p>The untapped resources of the Arctic Ocean offer undeniable economic opportunities, but the stakes for its fragile ecosystem are immense.</p>



<p>As global interest in the region grows, prioritizing ecological preservation through research, international collaboration, and robust conservation policies becomes ever more critical. </p>



<p>Only by understanding the Arctic’s deep-sea biodiversity can humanity ensure that economic ambitions do not come at the expense of this vital and unique environment.</p>

<p>The connection between early life experiences and mental health has long been a focus of psychological research. Central to these early experiences is the bond between children and their parents, a core concept in attachment theory and various other psychological frameworks.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Research has consistently shown that the quality of these relationships significantly influences subjective well-being into adulthood. However, most studies to date have been limited to small, localized samples, often confined to a single country.</p>



<p>In a recent study published in <a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s44271-024-00161-x" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Communications Psychology</em></a>, Jonathan T. Rothwell and Telli Davoodi, two researchers at <a href="https://www.gallup.com/home.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gallup</a>, investigated this relationship on a much larger and more diverse scale, analyzing data from 21 countries.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings suggest that the quality of parent-child relationships universally predicts adult <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-environment-day-the-critical-role-of-nature-in-human-well-being/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">well-being</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-broader-perspective-on-parenting-and-well-being">A broader perspective on parenting and well-being</h2>



<p>“I worked in psychiatric treatment facilities and clinics during college and saw many examples of the profound effect that family conflict has on the mental health of adolescents and adults,” Rothwell said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This experience, combined with concerns over rising mental health issues among adolescents in the United States, inspired Rothwell to explore the role of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/parents-often-feel-lonely-burnt-out-parenting-demands/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">parenting</a> practices over generations.</p>



<p>Rothwell and Davoodi initially conducted a U.S.-based study that linked parenting practices, parent-child relationship quality, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/outdoor-classes-improve-childrens-mental-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">youth mental health</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Building on these findings, the experts expanded their research to include a global perspective, analyzing 200,000 interviews and surveys collected from adults in 21 countries.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The goal was to examine the connection between childhood parenting experiences and adult well-being while accounting for cultural, religious, and socioeconomic diversity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quality-of-parent-child-relationships">Quality of parent-child relationships </h2>



<p>Participants were asked about their childhood relationships with their parents, including whether they felt loved by their mother or father, the overall quality of these relationships, and whether they ever felt like outsiders in their families.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These responses were compiled into an index measuring the quality of parent-child relationships.</p>



<p>To assess adult well-being, the researchers used 19 questions focusing on participants’ levels of hope, gratitude, and satisfaction with health and virtue.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Examples of these statements included: “Despite challenges, I always remain hopeful about the future,” and “If I had to list everything that I am grateful for, it would be a long list.” </p>



<p>Additionally, the study included seven mental health indicators, primarily focusing on clinical symptoms such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fear-and-anxiety-the-mental-health-impacts-of-wildfires/">anxiety</a> and sadness.</p>



<p>The researchers also collected data on socioeconomic factors, parental religiosity, and participants' current economic and family contexts to understand how these variables interacted with parenting experiences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-parent-child-relationships-and-adult-flourishing">Parent-child relationships and adult flourishing</h2>



<p>The study revealed a strong, universal link between positive parent-child relationships and adult well-being.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We found a substantial effect of parent-child relationships on both flourishing and mental health,” Rothwell said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This effect was larger than any other variable tested, including socioeconomic status, education level, income, gender, and financial security.</p>



<p>Remarkably, the positive association between parent-child relationships and adult flourishing was observed across all countries in the sample.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Only one country failed to meet conventional levels of statistical significance, which the researchers attributed to the younger population surveyed there. After adjusting for age distribution, even this outlier conformed to the overall trend.</p>



<p>The researchers also found that the influence of parent-child relationships on well-being was more pronounced in higher-income and secular countries.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In these regions, where basic needs like food and shelter are typically met, the quality of family relationships appears to play a larger role in determining individual happiness.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-religion-nbsp">The role of religion&nbsp;</h2>



<p>An intriguing finding was the role of parental religiosity. “Our main secondary finding is that more religious parents tend to have better relationships with their children in every country in our sample,” Rothwell noted.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This may explain why lower-income, more religious countries scored higher on flourishing indexes despite facing greater economic challenges.</p>



<p>This observation raises critical cultural questions. As societies develop and become more secular, there is a risk of losing traditional parenting wisdom that fosters strong family bonds.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Rothwell emphasized the importance of preserving these practices while navigating societal change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-and-future-research">Implications and future research</h2>



<p>The findings underscore the profound and lasting impact of childhood experiences on adult well-being and mental health. They also highlight the need for global, culturally inclusive research to further understand this relationship.</p>



<p>“In early 2025, my colleagues and I at Gallup are fielding a new U.S. survey on parenting to further improve the measurement of parenting practices that lead to the highest quality relationships and best long-term mental health outcomes,” said Rothwell.&nbsp;</p>



<p>His future work aims to explore how parenting shapes character traits and virtues, as well as to disentangle the effects of genetics from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/2024-resolutions-better-parenting-and-family-health-are-top-priorities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">parenting practices</a>.</p>



<p>Ultimately, Rothwell plans to compile these insights into a book, shedding light on how parenting influences human flourishing and offering guidance for future generations.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. <p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
