<p>A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new and convincing evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.</p>



<p>The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that some unknown, nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.</p>



<p>“This finding by Perseverance is the closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars. The identification of a potential biosignature on the Red Planet is a groundbreaking discovery, and one that will advance our understanding of Mars,” said acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. </p>



<p>“NASA’s commitment to conducting Gold Standard Science will continue as we pursue our goal of putting American boots on Mars’ rocky soil.”</p>



<p>The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. </p>



<p>After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



<p>Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.</p>



<p>Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.</p>



<p>Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.</p>



<p>These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.</p>



<p>Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. </p>



<p>That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



<p>On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. </p>



<p>Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.</p>



<p>The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.</p>



<p>None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



<p>A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. </p>



<p>NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.</p>



<p>The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.</p>



<p>The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.</p>



<p>Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



<p>The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.</p>



<p>Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.</p>



<p>The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.</p>



<p>Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



<p>“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. </p>



<p>Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



<p>If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. </p>



<p>That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.</p>



<p>If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.</p>



<p>Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.</p>



<p>The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



<p>The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. </p>



<p>They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.</p>



<p>Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.</p>



<p>PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.</p>



<p>As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.</p>

NASA announces discovery of life on Mars with high degree of confidence

<p>Nuclear fission has powered our world and medical advancements for decades, yet some of its secrets have remained elusive. </p>



<p>One of the biggest puzzles? What exactly happens when an atom's nucleus splits apart at its "neck rupture" point.</p>



<p>Aurel Bulgac, a physics professor at the <a href="https://www.washington.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Washington</a>, has been delving into this very question. He and his team set out to simulate the intricate particle dance during this critical moment of fission.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-supercomputer-tackles-the-quantum-realm">Supercomputer tackles the quantum realm</h2>



<p>To tackle this challenge, Bulgac's team collaborated with researchers from Los Alamos National Laboratory (<a href="https://www.lanl.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LANL</a>). </p>



<p>They harnessed the immense computing power of the Summit supercomputer at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (<a href="https://www.ornl.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ORNL</a>). </p>



<p>This was the first fully microscopic, quantum many-body simulation of a nucleus's neck rupture.</p>



<p>"This is probably the most precise and most carefully obtained theoretical description of neck rupture, without any assumptions and simplification," Bulgac remarked. "We have a very specific prediction, which until now didn't exist."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rules-and-dynamics-of-nuclear-fission">Rules and dynamics of nuclear fission</h2>



<p>For over 80 years, scientists have proposed various models to explain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/digital-misinformation-rumors-spread-like-nuclear-reactions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fission dynamics</a>. The classic "liquid drop" theory likened <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atomic-nucleus-made-of-quarks-and-gluons-reproduced-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the nucleus</a> to a charged fluid sphere that splits and sends out particles when disturbed. </p>



<p>But Bulgac's findings suggest a different story.</p>



<p>First off, the team discovered that neck rupture isn't random. Instead, the spot where the nucleus eventually splits is determined well before the actual scission. </p>



<p>Moreover, they found that the proton neck snaps earlier than the neutron neck, meaning neutrons hold the neck together just before it fully breaks.</p>



<p>Perhaps most intriguingly, they confirmed the existence of scission neutrons. These are neutrons emitted right as the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-wobble-how-scientists-manipulated-the-nucleus-of-a-single-titanium-atom/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nucleus splits</a>. </p>



<p>"There were people saying they exist, and others saying they don't exist. We see them, we don't see them, and so on," Bulgac noted. </p>



<p>Their simulation not only showed that scission neutrons are real but also detailed where they go and how much energy they carry.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nuclear-fission-and-scission-neutrons">Nuclear fission and scission neutrons</h2>



<p>The team's simulation revealed that scission neutrons are emitted in two distinct ways. Some shoot out sideways, perpendicular to the direction the fission fragments move. </p>



<p>Others emerge from the "noses" of the splitting fragments due to waves of matter sent during the neck's snap.</p>



<p>"After we put everything together and ran the simulation, we found out certain things that were totally unexpected: <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/molten-salt-could-reshape-the-future-of-nuclear-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">neutrons coming out</a> sideways and then in the direction of the moving fragments," Bulgac said. </p>



<p>"These types of distinct spectra are something that none of the earlier models predicted. Moreover, they are very high energy, so they should have properties very distinct from thermal neutrons."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-very-super-computer-simulation">A very "super" computer simulation</h2>



<p>Running such a detailed simulation wasn't easy. The team used the entire Summit supercomputer for almost 1 million node-hours. </p>



<p>Each run took about 15 hours and covered nuclei like uranium-238, plutonium‑240, and californium-252 under various conditions.</p>



<p>"An absolutely crucial tool was the use of supercomputers at Oak Ridge, starting with Jaguar and Titan, then Summit," Bulgac explained. "Without them, all this would have been impossible. Absolutely impossible."</p>



<p>The mathematical framework behind the simulation is something Bulgac has been refining since the early 2000s. </p>



<p>Instead of tracking every single particle, his approach focuses on the overall distribution of particles in space, making the complex problem more manageable.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-next-for-nuclear-fission">What's next for nuclear fission?</h2>



<p>The next big step is testing these predictions in the real world. Bulgac has already begun conversations with experimentalists eager to verify the findings.</p>



<p>"We used precise values for the parameters that describe this phenomenon -- and nothing else. And these are the results we got," he stated. "Now, if they are not true, then there is a very big question: what's wrong with the theory?"</p>



<p>It's a pivotal moment. If experiments confirm the simulation, it could reshape our understanding of nuclear fission. If not, it opens up new avenues of inquiry.</p>



<p>"At the moment, it's very hard to see what would be wrong, but we have to wait and see," Bulgac said. "If you make a prediction, it is confirmed or not confirmed, and then you must look and see. This is how physics proceeds."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-any-of-this-matter">Why does any of this matter?</h2>



<p>Understanding the nuances of nuclear fission isn't just an academic exercise. It has practical implications for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tonga-eruption-had-the-energy-of-five-nuclear-explosions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nuclear energy</a> production, medical applications, and even our grasp of fundamental physics.</p>



<p>By shedding light on the scission process and the behavior of scission neutrons, Bulgac's work could lead to more efficient <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-designs-nuclear-fission-reactor-to-provide-electricity-on-the-moon-and-mars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nuclear reactors</a> or new technologies harnessing fission.</p>



<p>The publication of the team's paper in the journal <em>Physical Review Letters</em> has already sparked interest. Scientists around the world are eager to see where this research leads.</p>



<p>For those of us outside the lab, it's a reminder of how much there still is to learn about the forces that shape our universe. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-chapter-in-nuclear-physics">New chapter in nuclear physics</h2>



<p>As experiments get underway to test these findings, the scientific community watches with bated breath. </p>



<p>Whether confirming or challenging Bulgac's simulation, the results will undoubtedly deepen our understanding of nuclear fission.</p>



<p>And perhaps, in the not-so-distant future, we'll look back on this research as a turning point -- a moment when we peeled back another layer of the atomic world and discovered something truly remarkable.</p>



<p>Who would have thought that after all these years, the simple act of an atom splitting could hold so many surprises?</p>

<p>A new study sheds light on a not-so-pleasant truth: the smallest countries in the world, which contribute the least to climate change, face its most dire consequences. And it's only set to get worse for these small island nations.</p>



<p>According to research led by the University of Bristol, on average, one in five people in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is now exposed to both coastal and inland flooding.</p>



<p>That's about 8.5 million people living in these countries that are toe-to-toe with possible disaster. </p>



<p>In the Bahamas, Guyana, and Tuvalu, this percentage triples, with over 60% of their populations exposed to the risks of flooding. The threats extend from the Pacific and the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea.</p>



<p>To put things in perspective, think of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/valencia-floods-a-tragedy-fueled-by-extreme-weather/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">catastrophic scenes in Valencia</a>, Spain, due to record-breaking rainfall. Now, imagine this as a regular occurrence, not just for Spain, but for people across the globe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flood-exposure-of-small-islands">Flood exposure of small islands</h2>



<p>Study lead author&nbsp;Leanne Archer is a research associate at the University’s Cabot Institute for the Environment.</p>



<p>“Flooding is now an alarming real-world threat for so many people globally. This study demonstrates that the often-overlooked Small Island Developing States are already subject to a disproportionate level of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/floods-are-becoming-more-deadly-in-the-desert/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flood exposure</a>, despite contributing the least to climate change,” said Archer. </p>



<p>But, why these islands? The United Nations (UN) recognizes these nations as being especially exposed to the effects of climate change. With populations ranging from around 1,000 to 7,000,000 people, inhabitants of the small island nations are often most concentrated along coastlines.</p>



<p>Indeed, the risk of coastal flooding is a significant concern. But it's the inland flooding that's the silent enemy. It accounts for the vast majority of overall population exposure at 81 percent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-supporting-climate-adaptation-on-small-islands">Supporting climate adaptation  on small islands</h2>



<p>Projections show that even in the best-case scenario, where global warming is kept at a minimum, significant growth in the number of people affected by rising sea levels, storm surge, and extreme rainfall events is expected.</p>



<p>The reach of these weather anomalies even overshadows the level of flooding exposure in developed nations like the US and UK, where around 13% and 8% of the populations are impacted, respectively.</p>



<p>"The findings should be a call to action to support these nations in adapting to and mitigating against these extreme repercussions, even under the lowest emissions scenario, which put life and livelihoods in peril," notedLeanne.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flood-projections-for-small-islands">Flood projections for small islands</h2>



<p>Depending on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-outrun-the-flood-risks-of-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global warming</a> levels, more than a fifth (21%) of SIDS populations can expect to face flooding if we manage to restrict the increase to 1.5°C by 2100. </p>



<p>In the worst-case scenario, where the world warms by more than 4°C, this figure could rise to nearly a quarter (23%), the study suggests.</p>



<p>Globally, we're not doing enough. A UN report last month warned that we're staring at a possible 3.1°C warming if governments do not take more action to reduce carbon emissions. </p>



<p>Even with these stark warnings, the countries most at risk remain the same, including Belize, Turks and Caicos Islands, and the Maldives.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urgent-action-is-needed">Urgent action is needed</h2>



<p>This research was conducted in partnership with the University of Southampton and used data from water risk intelligence firm Fathom's Global Flood Map. </p>



<p>A high-resolution global hydrodynamic flood model combined with worldwide population datasets was used to paint a comprehensive picture of flood risk across all 57 Small Island Developing States.</p>



<p>Study co-author Paul Bates is a professor of hydrology at the University of Bristol and co-founder of Fathom.</p>



<p>""The results are a timely warning to the world’s political leaders and policy makers that global commitments to significantly reduce carbon emissions must be backed up by action, in order to reduce potential loss and damage from flooding in Small Island Developing States, which contribute least to harmful carbon emissions,” said Bates. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fundamental-threat-to-humanity">Fundamental threat to humanity</h2>



<p>As we discuss these grave realities, the research echoes the essence of the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>’s mission - finding bold answers to big questions <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/distress-signals-earths-water-cycle-is-becoming-more-erratic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">concerning global challenges</a>.</p>

<p>In conclusion, climate change remains a fundamental threat to humanity, and no one bears its brunt more than the inhabitants of Small Island Developing States. </p>

<p>Microplastics have been found in some of the world’s most remote environments, from the snow-capped peaks of Mount Everest to the ocean depths of the Mariana Trench, infiltrating ecosystems and even human bodies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Now, new research led by scientists at <a href="https://www.psu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pennsylvania State University</a> (Penn State) reveals that these tiny plastic particles may also be affecting the atmosphere and climate.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study shows that microplastics can act as ice nucleating particles, potentially altering cloud formation, precipitation, and even global climate patterns.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microplastics-as-ice-nucleators">Microplastics as ice nucleators</h2>



<p>Microplastics - tiny <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-are-steadily-increasing-in-freshwater-environments/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plastic particles</a> less than 5 millimeters in size - were found to act as ice nucleating particles, which are microscopic aerosols that allow ice crystals to form in clouds.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Throughout the past two decades of research into microplastics, scientists have been finding that they're everywhere, so this is another piece of that puzzle,” said Miriam Freedman, a professor of chemistry at Penn State and senior author of the study.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It’s now clear that we need to have a better understanding of how they're interacting with our climate system, because we’ve been able to show that the process of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-small-aerosols-influence-cloud-formation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cloud formation</a> can be triggered by microplastics.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-research-was-conducted">How the research was conducted</h2>



<p>In their experiments, the researchers examined four types of microplastics: low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET).&nbsp;</p>



<p>By suspending each plastic in small water droplets and slowly cooling them, the team observed how these particles influenced ice formation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They found that droplets containing microplastics froze at temperatures between -22 and -28 degrees Celsius, much warmer than the typical -38 degrees Celsius required for droplets without defects to freeze.</p>



<p>“Any kind of defect in the water droplet, whether that’s dust, bacteria, or microplastics, can give ice something to form - or nucleate - around,” said study lead author Heidi Busse, a graduate student at Penn State.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microplastics-and-weather-patterns">Microplastics and weather patterns </h2>



<p>The ability of microplastics to initiate ice formation in clouds could have widespread consequences for weather and climate. When clouds contain more ice, it can affect precipitation patterns, often leading to heavier rainfall events as water droplets are delayed in their descent until they reach a larger size.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“In a polluted environment with many more aerosol particles, like microplastics, you are distributing the available water among many more aerosol particles, forming smaller droplets around each of those particles,” said Busse.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“When you have more droplets, you get less rain, but because droplets only rain once they get large enough, you collect more total water in the cloud before the droplets are large enough to fall and, as a result, you get heavier <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-changing-rainfall-patterns-impact-plants-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rainfall</a> when it comes.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microplastics-and-cloud-structure">Microplastics and cloud structure </h2>



<p>The influence of microplastics on cloud structure may also affect how much solar radiation is reflected back into space or retained in Earth’s atmosphere.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Clouds at higher altitudes can help trap heat emitted from the Earth, which in some cases can contribute to warming. Freedman emphasized that the ratio of liquid water to ice within clouds plays a crucial role in determining whether clouds have a net cooling or warming effect.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As microplastics accumulate in the atmosphere, their potential influence on mixed-phase clouds may mean they are already impacting global climate in ways that are not yet fully understood.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-behavior-of-aging-microplastics">Changing behavior of aging microplastics</h2>



<p>The researchers also investigated how “environmental aging” -the natural processes that particles undergo when exposed to sunlight, ozone, and other elements in the atmosphere - affects the ice-nucleating properties of microplastics.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The analysis revealed that aging generally reduced the ice-forming ability of LDPE, PP, and PET, while PVC’s ice-forming potential actually increased due to changes on its surface caused by environmental aging.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This variation suggests that over time, as microplastics are exposed to the atmosphere, their impact on cloud formation may change.</p>



<p>“We know that the fact that microplastics can nucleate ice has far-reaching effects; we’re just not quite sure yet what those are,” Busse said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We can think about this on many different levels, not just in terms of more powerful storms but also through changes in light scattering, which could have a much larger impact on our climate.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-on-microplastic-additives">Future research on microplastic additives</h2>



<p>Next, the team plans to study common additives found in plastics, such as plasticizers, to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how these substances might further influence atmospheric behavior.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Many plastics contain a variety of additives that can affect their physical and chemical interactions within the environment. Analyzing these additional factors may reveal more about how microplastics in the atmosphere could influence weather and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/looking-to-earths-ancient-climate-to-predict-our-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate</a> dynamics.</p>



<p>“We know the full lifecycle of these plastic items we use every day could be changing the physical and optical properties of the Earth’s clouds and, therefore, changing the climate in some way, but we still have a lot to learn about exactly what they are doing,” Busse said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As scientists continue to unravel the atmospheric behavior of microplastics, new findings may add to the growing list of impacts these particles have on global systems - from terrestrial and marine ecosystems to human health and now, potentially, the climate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-growing-area-of-concern-nbsp">A growing area of concern&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Microplastics are a relatively new area of concern within atmospheric and climate science, and researchers like Freedman are now beginning to connect their widespread presence in the atmosphere to possible impacts on large-scale weather patterns and climate systems.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study highlights the importance of understanding the full life cycle and environmental behavior of plastics, especially as evidence mounts that microplastics influence processes fundamental to Earth’s climate.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While much is still unknown, Freedman’s team hopes to advance climate models that incorporate microplastics, allowing scientists to better predict how these particles could alter the planet’s delicate atmospheric balance.</p>



<p>As studies like this continue, microplastics might not only reshape our understanding of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-deadly-and-widespread-environmental-pollutants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environmental pollutants</a> but also inform future regulations aimed at reducing their release and mitigating their long-term impacts.</p>

<p>Air pollution involves more than just a mix of gases; it's a complex interplay between these gases and the surface of liquid droplets in the atmosphere. </p>



<p>At this interface, that is one hundred thousand times narrower than a human hair, gases and liquids move and interact in mind-blowing ways. And these tiny transitions between the media shape our air quality and, ultimately, our climate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-nitty-gritty-of-air-pollution">The nitty-gritty of air pollution</h2>



<p>Deep within the intricate world of air pollution, researchers armed with cutting-edge analytical tools have been exploring the microscopic boundary where liquids meet gases.</p>



<p>Complex chemical transformations take place in this nearly invisible domain that are critical to our understanding of air pollution and climate change.</p>



<p>In an international collaboration, scientists have been studying these reactions, known as acid-base equilibria, both within the heart of the liquid (in this case, an aqueous solution) and right at the point where the liquid meets the surrounding gas.</p>



<p>The goal? To gain crucial insights that would allow for the development of more accurate models predicting the behavior of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-small-aerosols-influence-cloud-formation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aerosols</a> and their impact on climate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-molecular-dynamics-of-air-pollution">Molecular dynamics of air pollution </h2>



<p>Much of this study focused on the transformation of sulfur dioxide (SO<sub>2</sub>), a common pollutant that is produced when fuels containing sulfur are burned.</p>



<p>The researchers used a combination of spectroscopic methods to dissect the complex chemical changes that occur when sulfur dioxide dissolves in water.</p>



<p>Under acidic conditions, the balance or "tautomeric equilibrium" between the two resulting chemicals - bisulfite and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forever-chemicals-found-in-tap-and-bottled-water-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sulfonate</a> - is heavily tilted in favor of sulfonate. </p>



<p>Molecular dynamic simulations also showed that both the sulfonate ion and its acid (sulfonic acid) are more stable at the interface due to ion pairing and higher dehydration barriers, respectively. This explains why the balances shift at the interface.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-impact-of-the-inconspicuous">The impact of the inconspicuous</h2>



<p>The behavior of these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/are-we-breathing-cancer-causing-chemicals-in-our-cars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chemicals</a> at the interface is significantly different from that inside the bulk environment. </p>



<p>This difference shapes how sulfur dioxide absorbs and reacts with other pollutants, such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reducing-nitrogen-oxide-pollution-could-boost-crop-yields/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nitrogen oxides</a> (NOx) and hydrogen peroxide (H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>) in the atmosphere.</p>



<p>These findings have profound implications - they provide us with a better understanding of the mechanics that occur in the microscopic zone between liquids and gases, and can help guide us in finding effective strategies to mitigate air pollution and its harmful effects on our health and the environment.</p>



<p>This research wouldn't have been possible without the combined efforts of scientists from esteemed institutions around the globe including the <a href="https://www.fhi.mpg.de/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society</a> in Berlin.</p>

<p>By refining how we model interactions between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/common-air-pollutants-contribute-to-cardiovascular-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollutants</a> (such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides) and water particles, scientists can create more accurate simulations of how these substances behave under various atmospheric conditions.</p>



<p>This improvement in climate models could help predict the long-term effects of pollutants on both global warming and localized weather patterns, enabling us to understand better how pollution might influence future climate scenarios.</p>



<p>As models grow more precise, policymakers and environmental agencies can make informed decisions based on realistic projections, and can guide climate action on both local and global scales.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-directions-in-pollution-mitigation">Future directions in pollution mitigation</h2>



<p>With new insights into the molecular behavior of pollutants, researchers are also exploring innovative ways to mitigate air pollution before it disperses into the atmosphere. </p>



<p>For example, developing materials or coatings that react with specific pollutants to neutralize them could provide a proactive approach to air quality management. </p>



<p>Additionally, by identifying the chemical triggers that promote pollutant transformations, scientists could design more targeted filters for industrial emissions, thereby ensuring that harmful substances are neutralized at the source.</p>



<p>These advances in pollution control could pave the way for cleaner air in urban and industrial regions, which would ultimately reduce the health and environmental impacts of airborne pollutants.</p>

<p>New research suggests that about 3.6 billion years ago, Mars featured vast water flows and a lake rivaling the size of the Mediterranean.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This ancient hydrology, scientists say, was preserved under protective ice layers, contrary to the previous notion that warmer climates were necessary for liquid water on Mars.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study, led by Peter Buhler, a researcher at the <a href="https://www.psi.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Planetary Science Institute</a>, explores how a process driven by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-mars-became-uninhabitable-after-being-life-supporting-ocean-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars</a>’ carbon dioxide cycles could have created conditions allowing water to flow across the Martian surface.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-layer-of-frozen-carbon-dioxide">Layer of frozen carbon dioxide</h2>



<p>Buhler's model proposes that ancient Martian rivers and lakes were enabled not by warmth but by carbon dioxide freezing out of the atmosphere and forming a thick layer atop an ice sheet at the Martian poles.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This layer of frozen carbon dioxide functioned like an insulating blanket, trapping heat from Mars’ interior, which increased pressure on the underlying ice and melted nearly half of Mars’ water reserves, allowing rivers to form.</p>



<p>“This model describes the origins of major landscape features on Mars - like the biggest lake, the biggest valleys and the biggest esker system (remnants of rivers that once flowed beneath an ice sheet) - in a self-consistent way,” Buhler explained.</p>



<p>He emphasized that the findings don’t depend on a hypothetical warming event but rather on a process observed on Mars even today.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-dioxide-cycle-on-mars">Carbon dioxide cycle on Mars</h2>



<p>Decades of research have established that a significant amount of Mars’ carbon dioxide is absorbed in a single-molecule-thick layer around the regolith grains (i.e. the layer of unconsolidated solid material covering the bedrock of a planet).&nbsp;</p>



<p>By including this regolith component, Buhler found that the Martian atmosphere “is mostly just along for the ride,” with the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-carbon-dioxide-travels-in-the-atmosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon dioxide</a> cycle playing a primary role. </p>



<p>Mars’ rotational tilt - shifting every 100,000 Martian years - impacts this cycle. When Mars tilts upright, sunlight bakes the equator while the poles cool, causing carbon dioxide to escape from the regolith into the atmosphere before freezing atop the polar ice.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As Mars’ tilt becomes more extreme, this pattern reverses, subliming the ice back into gas and causing the regolith to absorb it like a sponge.</p>



<p>The findings demonstrate that this modern-day carbon dioxide exchange mechanism could explain Mars’ ancient landscape features, which had previously baffled scientists.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In testing his model for the period 3.6 billion years ago, Buhler pinpointed the early phases of Mars’ current carbon dioxide cycle, a time associated with the formation of river valley networks.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This cycle, he theorized, was responsible for melting large volumes of Martian <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-lost-most-of-its-water-but-where-did-it-go/">water</a> without significant warming events.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-water-trapped-beneath-the-icy-surface-nbsp">Water trapped beneath the icy surface&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In Buhler’s model, Mars’ carbon dioxide ice sheet could have been around 0.4 miles thick, lying atop a layer of water ice around 2.5 miles thick.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This layered arrangement, Buhler suggested, acted as a powerful insulator, trapping geothermal heat below the ice cap and adding substantial weight and pressure, which melted the underlying water ice.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The meltwater then pooled beneath the ice sheet, saturating the surrounding Martian crust and eventually freezing as permafrost on the edges.</p>



<p>Buhler explained that this setup caused water to flow in only one direction - through the narrow interface between the ice sheet and the bedrock.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The only way left for the water to go is through the interface between the ice sheet and the rock underneath it,” he said, pointing out that similar subglacial rivers emerge from glaciers on Earth.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These Martian rivers left behind eskers - long ridges of gravel, remnants of ancient rivers that once flowed under glaciers. These eskers, commonly observed near Mars’ south pole, align well with Buhler’s subglacial river predictions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-explaining-water-on-ancient-mars">Explaining water on ancient Mars</h2>



<p>Buhler’s model provides an alternative explanation for Mars’ eskers without invoking hypothetical warming. “Eskers are evidence that at some point there was subglacial melt on Mars, and that’s a big mystery,” Buhler said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Instead of requiring a global warming event, Buhler’s model relies on carbon dioxide insulation to facilitate subglacial melting.&nbsp;</p>



<p>His findings offer a more consistent explanation, as warmer temperatures would have likely burned off any exposed feathers, fur, or other features.</p>



<p>According to Buhler, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-river-landscape-lies-beneath-the-east-antarctic-ice-sheet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">subglacial rivers</a> emerging from beneath the ice formed slow-moving, ice-covered flows. Over time, these flows would gather enough pressure to form larger rivers under a thick ice cover. </p>



<p>Buhler estimates that these ice-topped rivers could reach depths of several feet and stretch for thousands of miles.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-water-flowing-on-mars-nbsp">Water flowing on Mars&nbsp;</h2>



<p>As the subglacial rivers reached the edge of the ice sheet, they encountered Mars’ cold atmosphere and initially created oozing, lava-like flows covered by frozen skins.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Eventually, these rivers poured into the Argyre Basin, a vast basin comparable in volume to the Mediterranean Sea, filling it with meltwater over tens of thousands of years. Once filled, the water would overflow and travel nearly 5,000 miles to the northern plains of Mars.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Buhler’s model also suggests that this process occurred multiple times across millions of years during a one-hundred-million-year period, making it the first to demonstrate that enough water was present to overtop the Argyre Basin.</p>



<p>“This is the first model that produces enough water to overtop Argyre, consistent with decades-old geologic observations,” Buhler explained, suggesting that this subglacial melting and overflow may have driven a cycle of water sublimation and condensation, creating a pole-to-equator hydrologic cycle.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-redefining-mars-water-cycle-nbsp">Redefining Mars’ water cycle&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Moving forward, Buhler plans to continue testing his model to further solidify its findings. Should future results continue to support his work, it may prompt a substantial reevaluation of Mars’ ancient water cycle.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By demonstrating how ancient Mars could sustain liquid water without requiring atmospheric warming, Buhler’s model reshapes scientific understanding of how Mars’ rivers and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-largest-lake-once-contained-an-enormous-amount-of-water/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lakes</a> formed and persisted billions of years ago.</p>



<p>Ultimately, the research suggests that Mars may have once harbored conditions even more dynamic and water-rich than previously believed.</p>

<p>Few people have ever dreamed of becoming a billionaire by unearthing riches hidden within asteroids.  </p>



<p>While many might think of oil reserves, diamonds, or goldfields, mining asteroids could soon offer unimaginable profits that are no longer in the realm of science fiction.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mining-asteroids-for-profit">Mining asteroids for profit</h2>



<p>Matt Gialich, the mastermind behind the nascent aerospace company AstroForge, is one of those individuals.</p>



<p>He firmly believes that mining celestial bodies could yield immense profits and turn <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/civilian-spacewalk-is-a-giant-leap-in-space-exploration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">space exploration</a> into a lucrative frontier.</p>



<p>Underneath the icy, rocky surface of asteroids - such as the 16 Psyche which is about 124 miles wide - there's an estimated worth of more than $10,000 quadrillion (£8,072 quadrillion) in precious metals. If exploited correctly, it might even be enough to create billionaires out of Earth's entire population.</p>



<p>Still, we can't rush to the stars just yet. The necessary technology is currently in its infancy.</p>



<p>Nonetheless, this untapped wealth has already attracted serious attention. AstroForge, for instance, has garnered a whopping $40 million (£31m) in funding.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-targeting-platinum-rich-asteroids">Targeting platinum-rich asteroids</h2>



<p>The company is tight-lipped about its target asteroid, but a platinum-rich one would seem to be the preference.</p>



<p>"I want to dominate the world when it comes to ideal progression, and that's how we think about it. At the same time, in the short term, we're going to make a s***load of money," said Gialich.</p>



<p>AstroForge was born in early 2022 with the pioneering goal of mining platinum from an asteroid. Founded by Gialich and Jose Acain, it set the lofty ambition of becoming the first such company.</p>



<p>In 2023, they launched their first satellite, which used simulated asteroid material to showcase how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spaceship-thruster-technology-fueled-by-any-type-of-metal-could-fly-indefinitely/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metals</a> could be refined in space.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mission-odin-a-secretive-quest">Mission Odin: A secretive quest</h2>



<p>Unfazed by the technical hiccups during the launch, AstroForge is gearing up for their second mission, the launch of spacecraft Odin which is destined to rendezvous with a near-Earth asteroid in early 2025.</p>



<p>The main objective of this second mission is to scout a potentially metal-rich asteroid in the depths of space, land on it, and then use onboard equipment to mine the rock for the valuable precious metals within.</p>



<p>Taking off as a part of Intuitive Machines' IM-3 lunar lander, Odin will swing around the moon before catapulting into space. </p>



<p>Gialich's primary objective? "Get to the asteroid and take a picture of it to show that we have found the correct asteroid that we want to go after."</p>



<p>But don't expect Gialich to reveal much about his company's celestial target. Keeping competitors guessing, he has vowed to keep the specifics under wraps.</p>



<p>The only shared detail is that the asteroid they seek is believed to be abundant in platinum group metals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-enormous-reserves-of-precious-metals">Enormous reserves of precious metals </h2>



<p>Several asteroids have been identified that could potentially host enormous reserves of precious metals. </p>



<p>One of these is the asteroid 16 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/psyche-asteroid-is-worth-10000-quadrillion-and-nasa-is-sending-a-space-probe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Psyche</a> which, according to NASA, could harbor massive amounts of iron and nickel.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.mit.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MIT</a> space scientist Dr Linda Elkins-Tanton estimates the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/psyche-will-use-mars-to-slingshot-itself-deeper-into-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iron</a> alone in 16 Psyche could be worth a jaw-dropping $10,000 quadrillion (£8,072 quadrillion).</p>



<p>The demand for these metals on Earth is high, and the supply is limited. But a single asteroid could contain trillions of dollars' worth of valuable minerals.</p>



<p>As space travel becomes more affordable and rockets more powerful, space seems like the ultimate frontier for private mining companies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bold-leap-into-asteroid-mining">Bold leap into asteroid mining</h2>



<p>AstroForge recently celebrated becoming the first company to receive a license to operate in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deep-space-is-even-darker-than-we-imagined/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deep space</a>.</p>



<p>The experimental license, granted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), allows AstroForge to operate beyond two million kilometers (1.24 million miles) from Earth. This permits the necessary communication with Odin during its interstellar journey.</p>



<p>It is evident that Gialich is unfazed by the legal and ethical complications of claiming ownership of a celestial body.</p>



<p>"In 2015, we passed the Space Act, and the Space Act says any commercial company in the United States can mine an asteroid for profit," he noted.</p>



<p>And Gialich is just as unconcerned about the potential for his venture's success to crash commodity prices, leading to global economic upheaval.</p>



<p>Instead, he views space mining as not only "hugely lucrative" but also more environmentally friendly than terrestrial mining.</p>



<p>"I think my job is to prove that it's f****** possible," said Gialich. His determination to make space mining a reality is as clear as the night sky itself.</p>



<p>Undeniably, AstroForge is on an ambitious mission that could potentially revolutionize our understanding of wealth, resources, and the final frontier - space.</p>

<p>2024 may be a record-shattering year of intense heat, not just for us humans, but also for our planet. In this very year, we are "virtually certain" to break a new temperature record: humanity's first year living in a world 1.5 °C (34.7 °F) warmer than pre-Industrial times.</p>



<p>This is according to a report from the European climate monitor, Copernicus, which came out just a few days before the crucial UN climate talks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inescapable-heat-records-in-2024">Inescapable heat records in 2024</h2>



<p>Copernicus stressed that the world is passing a "new milestone" in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/2024-is-likely-the-hottest-year-in-recorded-history/#:~:text=2024%20is%20shaping%20up%20to,in%20temperatures%20across%20the%20globe." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">temperature records</a>. And the bar keeps getting higher.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Last month was the second hottest October in recorded history, marked by deadly flooding in Spain and Hurricane Milton in the United States. The global temperatures were second only to the highs in the same period in 2023.</p>



<p>According to Copernicus, 2024 will likely be more than 1.55 degrees Celsius (approximately 34.7 degrees Fahrenheit) hotter than the 1850-1900 average. For context, this was the period before we started burning fossil fuels on an industrial scale.</p>



<p>This does not mean that we have violated the Paris Agreement. This treaty strives to limit global warming to below 2°C (35.6 °F), and preferably 1.5 °C (34.7 °F), measured over decades and not individual years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rise-in-global-temperatures">Rise in global temperatures </h2>



<p>"It is now virtually certain that 2024 will be the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scorching-summer-of-2024-could-make-it-the-hottest-year-on-record/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">warmest year on record</a> and the first year of more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels," said Samantha Burgess, the Deputy Director of Copernicus Climate Change Service (<a href="https://climate.copernicus.eu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">C3S</a>).</p>



<p>The claims don't stop there. Burgess added that this significant rise in global temperature should serve as a catalyst to spur ambitious action during the forthcoming Climate Change Conference, COP29.</p>



<p>The crucial UN climate negotiations taking place in Azerbaijan next week will lay the foundation for future carbon-cutting targets. </p>



<p>These talks coincide with the United States' recent presidential election victory by Donald Trump, a notoriously public skeptic of climate change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change-and-heat-records">Climate change and heat records</h2>



<p>But, it's not all <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/september-2024-was-the-second-hottest-month-ever-recorded/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">about the heat</a>. Global warming brings along a slew of knock-on effects. Warmer air can hold more water vapor, leading to greater evaporation from warmed oceans and resulting in more intense downpours and storms.</p>



<p>According to Copernicus, October witnessed above-average rainfall across swathes of Europe, as well as parts of China, the United States, Brazil, and Australia. </p>



<p>Meanwhile, the U.S. is also grappling with an ongoing drought, affecting record numbers of people.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sea-surface-temperatures">Sea surface temperatures </h2>



<p>Sea surface temperatures weren't spared either. Averaged across the region monitored by Copernicus, October of 2024 saw the second-highest sea surface heat temperatures on record.</p>



<p>With billions of measurements from satellites, ships, aircraft, and weather stations under their belt, C3S provides trusted calculations. </p>



<p>Their records date back to 1940, but by leveraging ice cores, tree rings, and coral skeletons, scientists can explore deeper into Earth's climatic past.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-effects-on-biodiversity">Effects on biodiversity</h2>



<p>As global temperatures rise, the impact on biodiversity is becoming clear. Ecosystems are struggling as species find it hard to adapt to fast-changing climates. </p>



<p>Many animals are moving to cooler areas, changing the makeup of ecosystems and threatening biodiversity. This can disrupt food chains and habitats, increasing the risk of extinction for vulnerable species. </p>



<p>Changes in timing for flowering and breeding also create new challenges. It’s crucial to act on conservation strategies now, as these shifts are altering life on Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-mitigation-strategies">Climate mitigation strategies</h2>

<p>In an incredible feat that redefines biological boundaries, scientists have successfully engineered animal cells that are capable of photosynthesis. </p>



<p>This breakthrough, led by Professor Sachihiro Matsunaga at the <a href="https://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tokyo</a>, could transform medical research and aid in advancing lab-grown meat production. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-exactly-is-photosynthesis">What exactly is photosynthesis?</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/revealing-the-secrets-of-photosynthesis-through-pep/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Photosynthesis</a>, traditionally exclusive to plants, algae, and certain bacteria, is a process that uses sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and sugars -- essentially “feeding” the organism.</p>



<p>Plants absorb sunlight using chlorophyll, a green pigment in their leaves, and use it to transform carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil into glucose, a type of sugar. T</p>



<p>his glucose provides energy and serves as a building block for growth.</p>



<p>During this process, oxygen is released as a byproduct and expelled into the atmosphere. This oxygen is essential for the survival of most living organisms, including humans, who rely on it for respiration. </p>



<p>Photosynthesis not only fuels plant growth but also maintains the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere. It is absolutely essential for life on Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-photosynthesis-in-animal-cells">Photosynthesis in animal cells</h2>



<p>“All living organisms on Earth, including humans, are able to live thanks to photosynthesis,” Matsunaga explained. </p>



<p>“Animal cells consume oxygen, eat and break down sugars, and emit carbon dioxide. This reaction is completely opposite to photosynthesis.” </p>



<p>By introducing photosynthetic properties into animal cells, the team hopes to create cells that consume less oxygen and emit less carbon dioxide -- essentially turning them into mini oxygen producers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-overcoming-a-50-year-challenge">Overcoming a 50-year challenge</h2>



<p>Attempts to create photosynthesizing animal cells date back to the 1970s. </p>



<p>“If we can get even part of photosynthesis to occur in animal cells, we can reduce the amount of oxygen consumed, reduce the amount of sugar eaten, and reduce <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/good-news-plants-are-absorbing-more-human-produced-co2-than-expected/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon dioxide</a> emissions,” Matsunaga said.</p>



<p>However, the challenge lies in convincing animal cells to accept chloroplasts, the cellular structures where photosynthesis happens in plants.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Previously, animal cells would destroy chloroplasts, recognizing them as foreign invaders, like bacteria or viruses.&nbsp;</p>



<p>After a decade of unsuccessful attempts, research in this field was abandoned, and it became widely accepted that chloroplasts could not function within animal cells.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-animal-cells-ingesting-chloroplasts">Animal cells ingesting chloroplasts </h2>



<p>Matsunaga’s team took two major steps to achieve this scientific breakthrough. </p>



<p>First, they searched for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chloroplasts-play-an-unexpected-role-in-plant-immunity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chloroplasts</a> that could survive the warmer environment of animal cells, which are usually cultured at around 37 degrees Celsius -- significantly higher than the temperatures that most plant chloroplasts can endure. </p>



<p>After finding suitable chloroplasts, the team had to prevent animal cells from rejecting them as foreign material.</p>



<p>“Chloroplasts eaten as food could be maintained in the animal cell for at least two days, during which time the initial reaction of photosynthesis could be detected,” said Matsunaga.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By allowing animal cells to ingest chloroplasts as “food” rather than forcibly implanting them, the team managed to bypass the immune response that typically destroys the chloroplasts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-source-of-energy-and-growth">New source of energy and growth</h2>



<p>The initial results surprised Matsunaga and his colleagues. </p>



<p>Not only did the animal cells tolerate the chloroplasts, but they also showed an increased growth rate, suggesting that the chloroplasts provided an additional energy source. </p>



<p>“I was surprised because we were able to do something that no one had been able to do for 50 years and that all biological researchers had given up on,” Matsunaga said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This achievement may have broad implications, particularly for medical applications and artificial meat production.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-applications-of-animal-photosynthesis">Applications of animal photosynthesis </h2>



<p>While human photosynthesis remains a distant goal, Matsunaga believes the immediate applications lie in medical research and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/company-introduces-lab-grown-fish-that-is-served-up-by-3-d-printers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lab-grown meat</a> production.&nbsp;</p>



<p>One major obstacle in growing tissue for medical use or artificial meat is ensuring oxygen delivery to densely packed cells.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As Matsunaga explained, “when cells become multilayered, the interior of the cell mass [doesn't get enough oxygen]; cell division stops, and size increase is not possible.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>By embedding chloroplasts, these cell clusters can generate their own oxygen if exposed to light, potentially resuming cell division and growth.</p>



<p>Looking further into the future, Matsunaga envisions medical applications that would deliver oxygen to specific organs, such as the heart. </p>



<p>For instance, implanting a small LED near the heart could provide light to photosynthetic cells, improving oxygen delivery in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crucial-discoveries-will-improve-cardiovascular-disease-treatment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heart disease</a> patients. </p>



<p>However, extending the chloroplasts' lifespan within animal cells remains a challenge. “In the future, we will improve our technique so that chloroplasts can carry out photosynthesis in animal cells for as long as possible,” Matsunaga said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-era-in-biological-engineering">New era in biological engineering</h2>



<p>Matsunaga's study marks a paradigm shift, showcasing how engineering animal cells to photosynthesize could lead to numerous innovations, from lab-grown meat production to enhanced medical treatments.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While there is still work to be done to extend chloroplast function within these cells, Matsunaga’s team has opened the door to a new realm of possibilities, challenging long-standing beliefs in biology and pushing the boundaries of what cells can achieve.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This breakthrough underscores the transformative potential of photosynthesis beyond plant life, offering a unique and versatile tool for addressing human challenges in food production, medicine, and possibly even climate change.</p>

<p>What if the solution to cancer lay hidden in a parasitic fungus? Scientists from the University of Nottingham have been studying a chemical that is produced by a fungus that grows on caterpillars. </p>



<p>In previous studies, the chemical has shown promise as a possible cancer treatment. The researchers set out to further investigate its potential.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-caterpillar-fungus-in-cancer">Caterpillar fungus in cancer</h2>



<p>The research is based on Cordyceps militaris, an orange fungus with a slightly creepy parasitic lifestyle. In Asia, it's not only a popular health food but also a powerful traditional medicine.</p>



<p>The magic ingredient in this fungus is cordycepin, a mighty chemical that has shown promise as a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-is-the-next-frontier-in-cancer-treatment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cancer medicine</a> in many studies. But how does it work?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fungus-compound-to-treat-cancer">Fungus compound to treat cancer</h2>



<p>The researchers analyzed the activities of thousands of genes in multiple cell lines to unearth the secrets of cordycepin.</p>



<p>They used high-throughput techniques, which made it possible to examine huge amounts of data at the same time.</p>



<p>And what did they find? Cordycepin interrupts the cell growth signals overactive in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/simple-lifestyle-changes-could-prevent-half-of-all-cancer-deaths/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cancer</a>. It does this by acting on the growth promoting pathways of the cell. </p>



<p>This could be less damaging to healthy tissue than most currently available treatments. Now, doesn't that sound promising?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inner-workings-of-the-chemical">Inner workings of the chemical </h2>



<p>The experts dug deeper into what happens to cordycepin inside the cell. They found that it is converted into cordycepin triphosphate, which looks a lot like the cell's energy carrier ATP.</p>



<p>This doppelganger molecule seems to be the likely culprit behind cordycepin's effects on cell growth, making it the direct assailant of cancer cells.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-caterpillar-fungus-as-a-cancer-medicine">Caterpillar fungus as a cancer medicine</h2>



<p>"We have been researching the effects of cordycepin on a range of diseases for a number of years and with each step we get closer to understanding how it could be used as an effective treatment," said lead author Dr. Cornelia de Moor from the <a href="https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/pharmacy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of Pharmacy</a>.</p>



<p>"One of the exciting things to have been happening is that it has become easier and less expensive to do these very large experiments, so we were able to examine thousands of genes at the same time." </p>



<p>According to Dr. de Moor, the data confirms that cordycepin is a good starting point for novel cancer medicines and explains its beneficial effects. </p>



<p>"For instance, derivatives of cordycepin could aim to produce the triphosphate form of the drug to have the same effect," she noted. </p>



<p>"In addition, the data will help with monitoring the effects of cordycepin in patients, as our data indicate particular genes whose activity reliably responds to cordycepin, which could for instance be measured in blood cells."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>



<p>Exploring the potential of Cordyceps militaris goes well beyond its current applications. Future research could explore the synthesis of cordycepin derivatives that may enhance its efficacy and specificity in targeting cancer cells.</p>



<p>With increasing understanding of genomics and targeted <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/men-could-face-an-84-increase-in-cancer-cases-by-2050/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">therapies</a>, researchers are optimistic about crafting personalized treatment regimens that could be less toxic and more effective. </p>



<p>Collaborative efforts across disciplines, including biotechnology and pharmacology, are likely to illuminate new pathways for leveraging the natural benefits of this fungal powerhouse.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-integrative-medicine-fungus-and-cancer">Integrative medicine: Fungus and cancer</h2>



<p>Integrative medicine, emphasizing a holistic approach to healthcare, benefits greatly from the potential inclusion of cordycepin-based therapies. </p>



<p>By harmonizing conventional cancer treatments with natural compounds like those derived from Cordyceps militaris, healthcare providers can offer more balanced and comprehensive care. </p>



<p>This could result in less invasive treatment plans that focus not only on eradicating cancer but also on preserving quality of life and minimizing side effects. </p>



<p>Continued clinical studies will be crucial in validating these integrative approaches, potentially solidifying the role of natural compounds as complements to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-anti-aging-drug-interleukin-11-boosts-lifespan-prevents-cancer-gray-hair/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">modern medicine</a>.</p>

<p>"Akin to the location of plumbing in the construction of an apartment building, which often results in mirrored kitchens or bathrooms across apartments, bees originate their colonies based on a heat source, and thermal cues drive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-temperatures-are-overheating-bumblebee-nests/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">colony organization</a>," Smith explained.</p>



<p>"Heat cues direct where the nest is initiated and where the queen begins laying eggs, but the entire nest is symmetrical, including their pollen and honey stores."</p>

<p>Quite remarkably, this behavior is not limited to just one type of bee. Several honeybee species, all within the same genus, Apis, demonstrate this symmetry in their nest construction.</p>

<p>"Symmetry is visible in many organisms at several levels, from the molecular to the full body, but this is the first work to show architectural symmetry at this superorganism level," said Colette St. Mary, a program director in the NSF Directorate for Biological Sciences, which partially funded the research. </p>

<p>There's something truly remarkable about the brain. Its complexity, intricacy, and power are unparalleled in the world of biological wonders. As we continue to explore its depths, we unearth revelations that shift our understanding of cognitive processes. One recent discovery compares the brain's action sequencing to the workings of a music box.</p>



<p>Experts in neuroscience have identified special brain cells that create multiple coordinate systems. These systems act as a GPS of sorts, helping us understand "where we are" in a sequence of actions. </p>

<p>The beauty of it? It's akin to a music box playing different tones, where our brain cells can execute different action sequences.</p>

<p>This approach allowed scientists to uncover how mice generalize these structures to new tasks, demonstrating a hallmark of intelligent behavior.</p>



<p>“Every day we solve new problems by generalizing from our knowledge,” said Dr. Mohamady El Gaby, first author on the study and postdoctoral neuroscientist at UCL and Oxford.</p>



<p>“Take cooking for example. When faced with a new recipe, you are able to use your background knowledge of similar recipes to infer what steps are needed, even if you have never made the meal before.”</p>

<p>The music box analogy highlighted the researchers' goal: to understand how the brain achieves such problem-solving feats at a cellular level and to infer the algorithms used to accomplish them.</p>



<p>The researchers introduced mice to a set of four goal locations (A, B, C, and D) arranged in a loop. Despite the sequences varying in detail, the overall structure remained unchanged. </p>



<p>“After experiencing enough sequences, the mice did something remarkable - they guessed a part of the sequence they had never experienced before," noted Dr. El Gaby.</p>



<p>"When reaching D in a new location for the first time, they knew to go straight back to A. This action couldn’t have been remembered, since it was never experienced in the first place!”</p>



<p>This finding provided compelling evidence that the mice could comprehend the task's general structure and track their “position” within behavioral coordinates.</p>



<p>These insights offer a deeper look at how the brain’s functional algorithms operate at a cellular level, facilitating complex, adaptive behaviors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recording-brain-activity">Recording brain activity</h2>



<p>To explore in great detail <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-human-brain-connects-unrelated-concepts-through-reasoning/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">how the brain learns</a> and tracks task structures, the researchers employed advanced silicon probes to record the activity of multiple individual cells in the medial frontal cortex of mice. </p>



<p>The findings were compelling. The cells collectively mapped the animal’s “goal progress,” with one cell firing when the mouse was, for example, 70% of the way to its goal, regardless of the goal's specific location or distance.</p>



<p>“We found that the cells tracked the animal’s behavioral position relative to concrete actions,” said Dr. El Gaby. </p>



<p>“If we think of the cooking analogy, the cells cared about progress towards subgoals such as chopping the vegetables. A subset of the cells were also tuned to map the progress towards the overall goal, such as finishing preparing the meal.”</p>



<p>These “goal progress” cells acted as flexible building blocks, creating a behavioral coordinate system that supported task execution. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-s-music-box-mechanism">Brain's music box mechanism</h2>



<p>The research revealed that these cells form multiple coordinate systems, each indicating the animal’s location relative to a specific action. </p>



<p>The researchers likened this system to the mechanical nature of a music box, which can be configured to play any sequence of tones. </p>



<p>In the same way, the brain can "play" behavioral actions through these coordinate systems, demonstrating its remarkable ability to execute distinct action sequences with precision and flexibility. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-future-research">Implications for future research</h2>



<p>The implications of this discovery reach far beyond basic neuroscience. The research team is now collaborating with psychiatrists to apply these findings to studies on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-potency-linked-to-dramatic-rise-in-psychiatric-disorders/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">psychiatric</a> conditions like schizophrenia.</p>

<p>A fascinating new study, utilizing cutting-edge technology, is pushing the boundaries of neuroscience by using movies to map the human brain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-moving-beyond-the-resting-state">Moving beyond the resting state</h2>



<p>Traditionally, functional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-imaging-method-will-unravel-mysteries-of-neural-processes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain imaging</a> studies have largely focused on the resting state. Here, participants lie still and think without any external stimulus.</p>



<p>Although this process has yielded some interesting insights, it leaves a significant portion of the brain's landscape uncharted. </p>



<p>The scientists believed that using movies as external stimuli might light up these unexplored areas of the brain, giving them a more complete picture of how the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-brain-is-constantly-making-predictions-about-the-world-and-your-place-in-reality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain functions</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-using-movies-as-windows-into-the-brain">Using movies as windows into the brain</h2>



<p>Conducted by scientists at the <a href="https://www.mit.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</a> (MIT), this innovative research project used fMRI scans to map the brains of participants as they watched clips from various movies - both Hollywood hits like "Inception" and "The Social Network," as well as independent films.</p>



<p>The goal was to observe <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-brain-responds-to-bad-smells-within-300-milliseconds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">how the brain responds</a> to different components of the movie - scenes involving people, dialogue, action, and inanimate objects.</p>



<p>"Our work is the first attempt to get a layout of different areas and networks of the brain during naturalistic conditions," noted Reza Rajimehr, first author and neuroscientist at MIT.</p>



<p>"There is no stimulus - people are just thinking internally, so you don't know what has activated these networks. But with our movie stimulus, we can go back and figure out how different brain networks are responding to different aspects of the movie."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-brain-s-response-to-movies">The brain's response to movies</h2>



<p>The team obtained brain scans from 176 young adults, all of whom had watched the same 60-minute sequence of movie clips.</p>



<p>Using machine learning techniques, the scientists were able to identify distinct <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/traffic-pollution-impairs-brain-network-connectivity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain networks</a> involved in the processing of the movie content.</p>



<p>In reviewing this data, the researchers recognized 24 distinct brain networks, each correlating with specific aspects of sensory or cognitive processing. </p>



<p>These encompassed areas such as recognizing human faces or bodies, interacting with inanimate objects, and processing speech or social interactions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-brain-s-operational-dynamics">The brain's operational dynamics</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the study highlighted an inverse relationship between 'executive control domains' (brain regions responsible for planning, problem-solving, and prioritizing information) and regions with specific functions like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neurons-coordinate-group-activities-for-language-processing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">language processing</a>. </p>



<p>"Executive control domains are usually active in difficult tasks when the cognitive load is high," said Rajimehr.</p>



<p>"It looks like when the movie scenes are quite easily comprehendible, for example if there’s a clear conversation going on, the language areas are active."</p>



<p>"But in situations where there is a complex scene involving context, semantics, and ambiguity in the meaning of the scene, more cognitive effort is required, and so the brain switches over to using general executive control domains."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-movie-brain-mapping">Future of movie-brain mapping</h2>



<p>Although this study provides a comprehensive analysis of average brain activities, the scientists acknowledge that there is more ground to be covered.</p>



<p>The next step is to investigate how individual brains differ in their responses to movie content. This can pave the way for understanding how age, developmental disorders, or psychiatric conditions may impact these neural responses.</p>



<p>“In future studies, we can look at the maps of individual subjects, which would allow us to relate the individualized map of each subject to the behavioral profile of that subject," noted Rajimehr.</p>



<p>"Now, we’re studying in more depth how specific content in each movie frame drives these networks - for example, the semantic and social context, or the relationship between people and the background scene.”</p>



<p>This research marks a new milestone in understanding the human brain. By coupling neuroscience with the power of cinema, scientists are moving closer towards unraveling the secrets of our complex mind.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet <em>Archaeopteris</em>: the first modern tree</h2>



<p>The star of this ancient forest is <em>Archaeopteris</em> – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur <em>Archaeopteryx</em>. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.</p>



<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

And that's true no matter what class of molecules you look at."</p>



<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
