<p>Strength training often brings to mind toned arms and powerful legs. But new research suggests that the benefits extend much further. Lifting weights may also reshape the trillions of microbes living in our gut, which influence everything from metabolism to immunity.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/studies-learn-the-exact-amount-of-time-you-should-spend-training-to-build-muscle/">gut</a> microbiome is closely linked to both health and aging. Inside of it are microbes like <em>Faecalibacterium, Akkermansia, </em>and<em> Roseburia hominis</em>. These tiny organisms produce short-chain fatty acids that strengthen the gut lining and ease inflammation.</p>



<p>Endurance activities like running or cycling are known to boost these helpful microbes. But when it comes to resistance training, the picture has remained far less clear.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conflicting-past-studies">Conflicting past studies</h2>



<p>Until recently, research painted a mixed picture. Some trials found that weight training shifted microbial communities, while others reported almost no changes. </p>



<p>Matthieu Clauss of the <a href="https://www.nih.no/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Norwegian School of Sport Sciences</a> in Oslo noted that the existing research remains limited.</p>



<p>To settle this uncertainty, Sven Nahnsen and colleagues at the <a href="https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tübingen</a> studied 150 sedentary adults. Participants engaged in an eight-week resistance program using advanced machines that adjusted loads in real time and tracked every lift.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-strength-and-gut-microbes">Tracking strength and gut microbes</h2>



<p>This digital system created detailed performance records while ensuring progressive, individualized training. Stool samples collected before, during, and after the program allowed researchers to map microbial changes.</p>



<p>When researchers looked at the whole group, they saw no clear changes in microbial diversity. The story shifted, however, once strength gains came into focus. </p>



<p>Participants who made the biggest improvements showed noticeable rises in <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia hominis</em>. In fact, these microbes were especially abundant in individuals who gained far more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strength-training-may-be-the-best-exercise-for-insomnia/">strength</a> than everyone else.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-differ-in-strong-lifters">Microbes differ in strong lifters</h2>



<p>The study revealed clear differences between high and low responders. The strongest gains were linked with distinct changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natures-sweet-remedy-honey-is-a-microbial-marvel/">microbial</a> composition.</p>



<p>High performers also showed enrichment of members of the Lachnospiraceae family, many of which are linked to anti-inflammatory effects.</p>



<p>Notably, an amplicon sequence variant classified as <em>Roseburia hominis</em> showed the most significant increase in high responders by week eight.</p>



<p>Other enriched microbes included <em>Bacteroides massiliensis</em> and certain <em>Prevotellaceae</em>. Meanwhile, taxa like <em>Lachnoclostridium</em> and <em>Oscillospiraceae</em> declined.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gut-shifts-depend-on-training-progress">Gut shifts depend on training progress</h2>



<p>Why do only some people experience these changes? <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weight-training-shields-the-aging-brain-from-dementia/">Training</a> compliance was similar, and diet surveys showed no clear differences. </p>



<p>This suggests factors beyond effort or food intake. One possibility is that microbial shifts themselves supported muscle gains by increasing production of short-chain fatty acids, which enhance energy metabolism and recovery.</p>



<p>Resistance training did not increase overall microbial richness (alpha diversity), unlike endurance training, but it did remodel microbial composition (beta diversity) in high responders. </p>



<p>This points to a dose-response effect: only when strength improvements cross a certain threshold do microbiome shifts emerge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lifting-and-running-converge">Lifting and running converge</h2>



<p>Despite differences between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-running-can-help-you-move-think-and-feel-better/">running</a> and lifting, both exercise types seem to converge on similar microbial outcomes. </p>



<p>Enriched short-chain fatty acid producers like <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia</em> suggest common pathways that support gut integrity, regulate glucose, and reduce systemic inflammation.</p>



<p>The changes occurred without dietary modification, meaning resistance training alone can act as a driver of gut remodeling. This highlights its role not only for musculoskeletal health but also for metabolic and immune regulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exercise-benefits-are-clear">Exercise benefits are clear</h2>



<p>Some mysteries remain. Stool metabolomics showed no significant changes, which may indicate that functional shifts were subtle, localized, or required longer adaptation. </p>



<p>The study also lacked a non-exercising control group, leaving room for further confirmation.</p>



<p>Even so, outside experts remain hopeful. The results suggest that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-reduces-depression-and-anxiety-in-children-and-teens-with-mental-health-issues/">exercise</a> of any kind can benefit gut health. They also point to the possibility that resistance training sparks unique, health-related shifts in the microbiome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strength-training-as-gut-medicine">Strength training as gut medicine</h2>



<p>From a public health perspective, resistance training may offer far more than toned muscles. It could serve as a non-drug approach to improving gut health, especially for people facing chronic inflammation or the challenges of aging.</p>



<p>The changes happening inside the gut are striking. Beneficial microbes increase, the gut lining becomes stronger, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fasting-helps-the-body-fight-inflammation-and-chronic-diseases/">inflammation</a> settles down. These microbes also help regulate blood sugar and energy use, lowering the risk of long-term conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and digestive problems.</p>



<p>What makes this especially interesting is that participants did not need to change their diets. The exercise itself appeared to reshape the gut community, suggesting that strength training works as its own form of medicine.</p>



<p>For many, this shifts how we think about working out. Exercise is not only about muscles or appearance - it is about keeping the body resilient from within. Regular resistance training might help people recover faster, age more gracefully, and carry less risk of disease throughout life.</p>

<p>The myelin sheath, our neural bodyguard, not only shields axons (neuron transmitters) but also boosts neural transmission speed. </p>



<p>However, the puzzle remains unsolved as the neural signals tend to travel slower than sound, prompting us to ask, how do our brains <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/meditation-reveals-common-altered-states-of-consciousness/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">synchronize countless neurons</a> efficiently? Chen and his crew believe quantum entanglement could hold the answer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-consciousness-in-the-quantum-realm">Studying consciousness in the quantum realm</h2>



<p>Chen's team, in their pursuit of answers, treated photons and their surrounding electromagnetic fields in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-conditions-linked-hidden-brain-changes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">myelin sheath</a> as quantum entities. </p>



<p>They unearthed that the myelin sheath traps energy within, acting as an electromagnetic cavity, producing highly entangled photons. </p>



<p>These entangled photons defy the basic principles of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radical-new-theory-finally-unites-gravity-spacetime-and-the-quantum-realm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">classical physics</a> where changing the state of one photon, would instantly affect the other, regardless of the distance between them.</p>



<p>"We showed that the two photons can indeed have a higher rate of being entangled under certain conditions," Chen explained.</p>

Quantum connection behind brain signals and human consciousness

What truly defines our consciousness? How does it arise from...

<p>Over 700 million years ago, our planet experienced a deep freeze known as Snowball Earth. During this time, ice nearly covered the entire globe, setting the stage for life as we know it. </p>



<p>Recent research from University College London (UCL) has revealed a significant rock formation that may hold the most complete record of this icy chapter in Earth's history.</p>



<p>The Port Askaig Formation spans across Ireland and Scotland, with rock layers reaching up to 1.1 kilometers thick. </p>



<p>These rocks likely formed during the Sturtian glaciation, one of the planet's most severe ice ages, which occurred between 662 and 720 million years ago. This period is thought to have been crucial for the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/past-snowball-earth-conditions-drove-evolution-complex-multicellular-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolution of complex, multicellular life</a>.</p>



<p>Researchers believe these ancient rocks could signal the beginning of the Cryogenian Period. In geology, this important marker is known as a Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP), often symbolized by a "golden spike" embedded in the rock.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glimpse-into-the-snowball-earth-record">Glimpse into the Snowball Earth record</h2>



<p>One exposed outcrop of the formation, found on the Scottish islands known as the Garvellachs, is unique as it shows the transition into Snowball Earth from a previously warm, tropical environment. </p>



<p>Other rocks formed at a similar time, such as those in North America and Namibia, are missing this critical transition.</p>



<p>“These rocks record a time when <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-was-a-giant-snowball-700-million-years-ago-and-now-scientists-know-why/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth was covered in ice</a>. All complex, multicellular life, such as animals, arose out of this deep freeze, with the first evidence in the fossil record appearing shortly after the planet thawed,” explained Senior Author Professor Graham Shields, of <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/earth-sciences/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCL Earth Sciences</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-warm-seas-to-ice-age">From warm seas to Ice-age</h2>



<p>The layers of rock exposed on the Garvellachs are globally unique. </p>



<p>Beneath the rocks laid down during the frigid Sturtian glaciation, 70 meters of older carbonate rocks formed in tropical waters showcase a time of flourishing cyanobacterial life that gradually cooled, ending a billion-year span of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/summers-seasons-warm-faster-than-winters-earths-climate-history/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth's temperate climate</a>. </p>



<p>“Most areas of the world are missing this remarkable transition because the ancient glaciers scraped and eroded away the rocks underneath, but in Scotland, by some miracle, the transition can be seen,” said Elias Rugen, the study's first author and a PhD candidate at UCL Earth Sciences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-snowball-earth-and-the-cryogenian-period">Snowball Earth and the Cryogenian period</h2>



<p>The Sturtian glaciation, which lasted approximately 60 million years, was one of two big freezes during the Cryogenian Period (635 to 720 million years ago). </p>



<p>For billions of years before this period, life consisted only of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/organisms-called-protosterol-biota-lived-1-6-billion-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">single-celled organisms</a> and algae. </p>



<p>After this period, complex life emerged rapidly, with most animals today similar in fundamental ways to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ecosystem-behavior-earth-first-sea-creatures-stirring-water-drove-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">life forms that evolved</a> over 500 million years ago.</p>



<p>One theory is that the extreme cold may have prompted the emergence of cooperation among single-celled organisms, leading to the formation of multicellular life. </p>



<p>“The retreat of the ice would have been catastrophic. Life had been used to tens of millions of years of deep freeze. As soon as the world warmed up, all of life would have had to compete in an arms race to adapt. Whatever survived were the ancestors of all animals,” Professor Shields added.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-legacy-of-the-port-askaig-formation">Legacy of the port Askaig formation</h2>



<p>For the new study, the research team collected samples of sandstone from the 1.1km-thick Port Askaig Formation and the older, 70-meter-thick Garbh Eileach Formation underneath. </p>



<p>They analyzed durable minerals called zircons within the rock, which contain the radioactive element uranium. </p>



<p>By examining the decay of uranium to lead, the researchers precisely dated the rocks to between 662 and 720 million years ago.</p>



<p>The researchers believe these new age constraints may support the case for the site to be declared a marker for the start of the Cryogenian Period. </p>



<p>Such markers, known as Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) or 'golden spikes,' often attract international visitors and can even lead to the establishment of museums at these geological landmarks.</p>



<p>A group from the International Commission on Stratigraphy, part of the International Union of Geological Sciences, visited the Garvellachs in July to assess the potential for a golden spike on the archipelago. Currently, these islands are accessible only by chartering a boat or by sailing or kayaking to them.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-snowball-earth-s-past-holds-the-key-to-earth-s-future">Snowball Earth's past holds the key to Earth's future</h2>



<p>To sum it all up, the discovery of the Port Askaig Formation highlights one of Earth’s most amazing periods, giving us a rare look at a time when our planet was completely frozen. </p>



<p>This formation shares a story of survival and how complex life emerged from tough conditions. As researchers keep exploring this site, they’re uncovering insights that help us understand life's resilience and adaptability.</p>



<p>If the Port Askaig Formation gets designated as a golden spike, it could put this remote Scottish spot on the map internationally. This recognition would not only secure its place in the geological record but also remind us of the importance of preserving and studying our planet’s ancient past. </p>



<p>In a time when we’re facing rapid environmental changes, these insights serve as a reminder of the delicate balance that supports life on Earth and the significant effects climate shifts can have on our future.</p>

<p>Life on Earth was once ruled by the small, single-celled organisms swimming in the vast oceans. For an epoch, these tiny powerhouses were the kings and queens of the world, dominating for well over a billion years. Then came the period known as "Snowball Earth" that changed everything.</p>



<p>The reign of these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cyanobacteria-may-shed-new-light-on-the-history-of-life-on-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">single-celled organisms</a> was seemingly endless, until Snowball Earth turned all known models of life upside down, roughly 700 million years ago.</p>



<p>This icy era was no ordinary winter. The entire globe was ensnared in such <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-was-a-giant-snowball-700-million-years-ago-and-now-scientists-know-why/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme glaciation conditions</a> that even the equator may have been blanketed in ice. </p>



<p>However, it was during this frigid epoch that a marvel of evolution occurred -- the birth of multicellular organisms.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-multicellular-life-and-the-oxygen-paradox">Multicellular life and the oxygen paradox</h2>



<p>One of the biggest enigmas in biology is the sudden emergence and dominance of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossils-capture-a-turning-point-in-the-evolution-of-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">multicellular life</a>. Imagine a world where single-celled eukaryotes (organisms with intricate cells containing a nucleus) were the unrivaled rulers. </p>



<p>Then, in the wink of a geological eye, multicellular life blossomed amid the frosty reign of Snowball Earth. The prevailing theory suggests that oxygen levels had to reach a critical point before single cells could band together, forming multicellular colonies. </p>



<p>However, this theory falls short of explaining why the ancestors of today's animals, plants, and fungi all popped up simultaneously during this icy epoch.</p>



<p>The answer to this billion-year-old riddle has led researchers to delve deeper into the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/snowball-earth-may-not-have-been-frozen-solid/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">unique conditions</a> of Snowball Earth. </p>



<p>One such scientist is William Crockett, a former Undergraduate Complexity Researcher at <a href="https://www.santafe.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Santa Fe Institute</a>, who put forward a compelling new model.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-snowball-earth-and-the-viscosity-factor">Snowball Earth and the viscosity factor</h2>



<p>Crockett's study sheds light on the Snowball Earth mystery. The research team suggests that the physical conditions during this icy period, such as the increased viscosity of the oceans and scarcity of resources, might have led to the rise of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannibalism-cellular-level-common-across-various-life-forms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">multicellular life</a>.</p>

<p>Crockett observes, "It seems almost counterintuitive that these really harsh conditions, this frozen planet, could actually select for larger, more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rewrite-the-textbooks-life-on-earth-did-not-arise-due-to-increased-oxygen-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">complex organisms</a>, rather than causing species to go extinct or reduce in size."</p>

<p>By developing scaling theories, the researchers modeled how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/organisms-called-protosterol-biota-lived-1-6-billion-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">different organisms</a> would have fared during these harsh conditions. </p>



<p>The findings indicated that early ancestors of animals, similar to modern-day swimming algae that consume prey instead of relying on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/key-to-life-on-earth-photosynthesis-begins-on-the-quantum-level-with-a-single-photon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">photosynthesis</a>, would have prospered in this freezing environment. </p>



<p>In stark contrast, single-celled organisms that depend on diffusion for movement and feeding, such as bacteria, may have shrunk in size. </p>

<p>To really get why negative entanglement entropy matters, we first need to understand some basics about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-entanglement-laws-thermodynamics-follow-entropy-rule/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum entanglement and entropy</a>.</p>



<p>Quantum entanglement happens when particles like photons or electrons become linked, so that the state of one affects the other, no matter how far apart they are. This "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-entanglement-spooky-action-at-a-distance-persists-between-top-quarks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">spooky action at a distance</a>," as Einstein called it, is a key concept in quantum mechanics.</p>



<p>Entropy, on the other hand, is a measure of disorder within a system. The higher the entropy, the greater the disorder and unpredictability.</p>



<p>In a tidy room, everything is in its place, representing low entropy. In a messy room, where items are scattered randomly, entropy is high.</p>



<p>When these two concepts merge in the quantum realm, we get what is known as entanglement entropy -- a measure of how much information is lost about one part of a system if another part becomes inaccessible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-emergence-of-negative-entanglement-entropy">Emergence of negative entanglement entropy</h2>



<p>In classical quantum mechanics, systems are typically "Hermitian," meaning that they obey conservation laws -- particles and energy are neither created nor destroyed. </p>



<p>However, when we consider "Non-Hermitian" systems, where these conservation rules are relaxed, strange things begin to happen. </p>



<p>Specifically, in these non-Hermitian systems, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-entanglement-photons-used-to-measure-earth-rotation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">concept of entanglement</a> needs to be rethought, as the number of particles and their associated information can change. This leads us to the curious case of negative entanglement entropy.</p>



<p>Dr. Ching Hua Lee is a key figure in this research and an Assistant Professor at the <a href="https://nus.edu.sg/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National University of Singapore</a>. </p>



<p>He explains, "A very pertinent question that we have always wanted to answer is: can the esoteric negative entanglement behavior manifest in realistic experiments? In this work, we provide an affirmative 'yes' through the novel concept of exceptional bound (EB) states."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-classical-systems-in-quantum-discoveries">Classical systems in quantum discoveries</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the breakthrough in observing negative entanglement entropy did not come from an advanced quantum system but from a classical electrical circuit. </p>



<p>This circuit, composed of everyday components like resistors, capacitors, and operational amplifiers, was used as a "sandbox" to mimic the complex behavior of a quantum system. </p>



<p>Using this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/traditional-computers-verify-errors-made-by-quantum-computers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">classical approach</a>, the research team was able to bypass the usual challenges associated with manipulating quantum states, such as the need for ultralow cryogenic cooling or high-precision lasers.</p>



<p>Dr. Xiangdong Zhang, from the <a href="https://english.bit.edu.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beijing Institute of Technology</a>, elaborates, "EB states are highly robust and exhibit prominent measurable signatures, thus greatly facilitating their physical realization in relatively simple classical networks such as electrical circuits without the need for fine-tuning."</p>



<p>This innovative approach demonstrates the existence of negative entanglement entropy while breaking new ground in quantum phenomena exploration by using more accessible and cost-effective methods.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-quantum-information-technology">Implications for quantum information technology</h2>



<p>The implications of this discovery are far-reaching, particularly in the realm of quantum information technology. Negative entanglement entropy could play a crucial role in developing new quantum computing and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/artificial-atoms-qkd-quantum-communication-revolutionizing-data-protection-privacy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">communication technologies</a>. </p>



<p>These technologies rely on the ability to control and measure entanglement precisely, and understanding how negative entanglement works could lead to more robust and efficient systems.</p>



<p>Assistant Professor Yee Sin Ang from the <a href="https://www.sutd.edu.sg/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Singapore University of Technology and Design</a>, who co-authored the study, highlights the potential applications.</p>



<p>"This work suggests classical electrical circuits as a new hunting ground for the search of exotic quantum phenomena which are otherwise challenging to realize using atoms and material crystals," Professor Ang explained. </p>



<p>"Due to their ease of fabrication, electrical circuits may offer a low-cost sandbox for designing and prototyping devices useful for future quantum technology."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-negative-entanglement-entropy">Future of negative entanglement entropy</h2>



<p>As the research progresses, scientists are eager to explore how these exceptional bound (EB) states can be used to probe even more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/impossibility-paradox-calculating-incalculable-quantum-realm-particles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exotic physics in higher dimensions</a>. </p>



<p>The combination of topological, non-Hermitian, and EB physics could usher in a new era of quantum research, where classical systems serve as a bridge to understanding and harnessing the complexities of quantum mechanics.</p>



<p>Professor Haiyu Meng from <a href="https://en.xtu.edu.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Xiangtan University</a>, another co-author of the study, notes, "EB states are special states that provide the key fingerprints for negative entanglement. Whenever the host system becomes very sensitive due to the non-Hermiticity, EB states may emerge as a direct consequence of negative entanglement."</p>



<p>This research challenges our current understanding of quantum mechanics while suggesting new ways to explore the quantum world without relying on the often prohibitive costs and complexities of quantum systems.</p>

Elusive quantum 'negative entanglement entropy' deciphered in the lab

Quantum entanglement can be described as an almost magical link...

<p>An unusual mix of blazes sparked Alberta's fierce 2023 wildfire season, according to a new report by experts, including researchers at the <a href="https://www.ualberta.ca/en/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Alberta</a>.</p>



<p>The season was unlike anything seen before, with an estimated 2.1 million hectares of land burned. Experts are now investigating the causes and what this could mean for future <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/intense-fire-season-in-mexico-is-part-of-a-worldwide-trend/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fire seasons</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unusually-severe-wildfire-season">Unusually severe wildfire season</h2>



<p>What made 2023 especially unusual was the occurrence of two different types of fire patterns in the same year. This rare combination resulted in 36 large fires, which accounted for 95% of the area burned. </p>



<p>The fires were so intense that they have reshaped our understanding of the potential impact of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfire-impacts-are-evolving-due-to-climate-change-but-in-what-ways/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a>. "Last year's wildfire season redefined what is possible under a warming climate," said Jen Beverly, a professor of wildland fire at the University of Alberta and co-author of the study.</p>



<p>Alberta's 2023 fire season was unusually severe, far exceeding all other years in the province's historical record. The amount of land burned was about 63% greater than the previously recorded maximum in 1981.</p>



<p>The study authors noted that while large wildfires in Alberta were similar in severity to past years on an individual basis, there were simply more of them.</p>



<p>In the 20 years prior to 2023, there was an average of two fires per year larger than 10,000 hectares, compared with the total of 36 large fires that burned last year.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-wildfire-season-sparked-by-lightning">Early wildfire season sparked by lightning</h2>



<p>The fire season started early in May, with west-central Alberta experiencing 18 wildfires in just two weeks. Thirteen of these were caused by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lightning-is-the-leading-cause-of-wildfires-in-boreal-forests/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lightning</a>, an unusually high number for spring.</p>



<p>"Normally, lightning doesn't start to become a factor in spring wildfires until late May, and more into June, July, and August," said Beverly. However, the 2023 fire season revealed early <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/in-tropical-forests-lightning-strikes-the-most-resilient-trees/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lightning strikes</a> as a previously unrecognized threat.</p>



<p>"If we hadn't had that outbreak in early May from lightning fires, the season would still have been severe, but it would not have been off the charts," added Beverly.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-northern-fires-add-to-the-crisis">Northern fires add to the crisis</h2>



<p>As the season progressed, another 18 large fires broke out in northern Alberta. This second wave of fires further compounded the damage, making 2023 one of the most <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-fire-risk-has-grown-exponentially-in-a-hotter-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme fire</a> seasons in Alberta's history.</p>



<p>"Either one of those alone wouldn't have produced the extraordinary amplification in area burned that we saw," said Beverly.</p>



<p>The combination of climate warming, dry conditions, and limited firefighting resources allowed these fires to grow out of control, especially in isolated areas.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preparing-for-the-future">Preparing for the future</h2>



<p>The 2023 fire season serves as a stark reminder of how unpredictable nature can be, especially in the context of climate change. </p>



<p>"We can't rely on past data to anticipate what's coming," noted Beverly. "There was nothing in the 40 years before 2023 that would lead us to expect and plan for a burst of lightning activity in the first week of May."</p>



<p>To better respond to future wildfires, the experts are calling for more research, improved data tools, and better methods for triaging fires and allocating resources.</p>



<p>"We've got to get better at triaging those fires and knowing which ones to devote resources to quickly," Beverly said.</p>



<p>The unforgettable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/canadian-wildfires-of-2023-were-a-global-environmental-setback/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2023 fire season</a> is a warning that such extreme conditions could happen again, even if not for many years. </p>



<p>"We may not see another burst of early lightning activity for 30 more years, but what 2023 shows us is that we are extremely vulnerable," Beverly concluded.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-impacts-on-alberta-s-communities">Long-term impacts on Alberta's communities </h2>



<p>The 2023 wildfire season not only set new records for the amount of land burned but also left lasting impacts on Alberta's ecosystems and communities. </p>



<p>The fires devastated vast stretches of forests, grasslands, and wildlife habitats, disrupting the natural balance and leaving the landscape scarred. </p>



<p>The loss of vegetation also increased the risk of soil erosion and flooding, which could have further implications for local agriculture and water quality in the coming years.</p>



<p>In addition to the environmental damage, the fires forced numerous communities to evacuate, displacing thousands of residents and causing widespread property damage. </p>



<p>The emotional toll on those affected cannot be overstated, as many people lost their homes and livelihoods in the wake of the fires. </p>



<p>Recovery efforts are ongoing, but the rebuilding process will take time, and the memories of the 2023 fire season will linger for years to come.</p>

<p>Once upon a time, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/personality-type-can-accurately-predict-your-relationship-status/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">standing out</a> and embracing uniqueness was desirable. However, recent studies suggest a major change over the past two decades. It seems we've become fond of the idea of blending in, of being just another face in the crowd.</p>



<p>Enter William Chopik, associate professor in the Department of Psychology at <a href="https://msu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Michigan State University</a>. Chopik is the lead author of a study that uncovers a dramatic decline in the desire to be different. That's right, we're less keen on standing out these days, and it's all backed by some pretty formidable evidence.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quest-for-uniqueness">Quest for uniqueness</h2>



<p>The study spans a period of 20 years, from 2000 to 2020. Its findings track the desire for individualism in a whopping million people.</p>



<p>Uniqueness, for the purpose of this study, is broken down into three facets: worry over others' perceptions, the urge to break the established norms, and the readiness to publicly uphold personal beliefs. But, all three of these elements saw a decline during the study period.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-are-we-afraid-to-stand-out">Why are we afraid to stand out?</h2>



<p>The most staggering drops were seen in the public defense of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/personality-is-more-important-than-finances-when-it-comes-to-dating/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">personal beliefs</a> (6.52% decline), and an increasing concern about public opinion (4.28% decline). These numbers might sound small, but as Chopik points out, "a 6.52% decline is a dramatic population change in as short as 20 years."</p>



<p>And why these drops? The data points to a possible explanation. Perhaps individuals see expressing their uniqueness as a threat to social acceptance. Yes, standing out might make them vulnerable to exclusion. Or worse, cancellation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-is-it-truly-worthwhile">Is it truly worthwhile?</h2>



<p>Chopik's study warns us of the possible implications of this trend. Suppressing our true selves to fit into societal molds can sometimes have an adverse effect, triggering feelings of guilt and anxiety. And let's not forget, this often leads to increased hostility.</p>



<p>"It's really important to have people willing to go against the grain - say the occasional unpopular thing, challenge groupthink, highlight the need to compromise with people different than us, and not cover up the diversity of opinions and people because they're too scared to stand out," says Chopik.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-perceptions-of-uniqueness-on-social-media">Perceptions of uniqueness on social media </h2>



<p>In today's interconnected world, social media platforms wield immense power over individual perceptions and behaviors. While these platforms can facilitate the expression of diverse opinions and lifestyles, they also contribute to a culture of comparison and conformity. </p>



<p>As users curate their online personas, the pressure to fit in intensifies, often leading to a hedonic treadmill of dissatisfaction where uniqueness is celebrated only if it conforms to prevailing trends. </p>



<p>Chopik’s study provides critical context here: as the desire for uniqueness declines, it begs the question: are we shaping our identities based on genuine self-expression or merely mirroring the expectations set by our digital environments?</p>

<p>Humans have always been captivated by the star-studded skies. Much like an orchestra thrills its audience with each instrument, our universe continues to astound us with each new revelation, including this recent discovery of CWISE J1249 by NASA citizen scientists of an unknown object moving at incredible speed.</p>



<p>One such incredible discovery was recently made by an exceptional group of astronomical enthusiasts, the citizen scientists of NASA's Backyard Worlds: <a href="https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/marckuchner/backyard-worlds-planet-9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Planet 9 project</a>.</p>



<p>Their keen eyes spotted an object moving at an astonishing speed of 1 million miles per hour, a rarity in the tranquil orbits of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stars-at-the-edge-of-our-milky-way-galaxy-travel-more-slowly/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Milky Way</a>. This sensational find marks the first detection of such a fast and compact celestial object.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-backyard-worlds-project">Understanding the Backyard Worlds project</h2>



<p>NASA's "<a href="https://science.nasa.gov/citizen-science/backyard-worlds-planet-9/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Backyard Worlds</a>" is a fun citizen science project that invites everyone to help find new celestial objects. </p>



<p>This initiative aids in the analysis of huge amounts of data from NASA’s <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/neowise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NEOWISE mission</a> to spot elusive brown dwarfs, rogue planets, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/thousands-of-worlds-do-not-fit-the-definition-of-a-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">other cosmic gems</a> that might have slipped past automated searches.</p>



<p>Participants, called "citizen scientists," get to analyze images online, hunting for moving objects that could lead to exciting discoveries. </p>



<p>It’s a fantastic opportunity for people from all walks of life -- no matter their scientific background -- to pitch in on real astronomical research.</p>



<p>Those involved in Backyard Worlds have played a key role in spotting several <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scorching-weather-temperatures-storms-measured-two-distant-brown-dwarfs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brown dwarfs</a> -- objects that are too big to be planets but not quite large enough to become stars.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cwise-j1249-and-the-neowise-mission">CWISE J1249 and the NEOWISE mission</h2>



<p>The Backyard Worlds </p>



<p>From 2009 to 2011, WISE diligently mapped the sky, capturing images in infrared light, before being reactivated as NEOWISE in 2013. </p>



<p>This project, which was retired in 2024, played a crucial role in this discovery. </p>



<p>A few years back, dedicated citizen scientists, Martin Kabatnik, Thomas P. Bickle, and Dan Caselden, noticed a faint and fast-moving object on their screens, which was later titled CWISE J124909.08+362116.0. </p>



<p>Follow-up observations confirmed the discovery and allowed the scientists to characterize the object, earning these citizen scientists co-authorship in the study documenting this discovery.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mysteries-of-cwise-j1249">Mysteries of CWISE J1249</h2>



<p>“I can’t describe the level of excitement. When I first saw how fast it was moving, I was convinced it must have been reported already,” said Kabatnik, hailing from Nuremberg, Germany. </p>



<p>Yet, the unique attributes of this object didn't stop at its extraordinary speed.</p>



<p>The low mass of CWISE J1249 makes it a difficult object to categorize -- it could either be a low-mass star or a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cold-brown-dwarf-captured-emitting-methane-first-time-surprising-scientists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brown dwarf</a>, a celestial body somewhere between a gas <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-giant-planets-form/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">giant planet</a> and a star.</p>



<p>Despite being rare, planet-searching volunteers have already identified over 4000 brown dwarfs. However, none of these objects are on a galactic getaway like CWISE J1249.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-secrets-of-an-ancient-star">Secrets of an ancient star</h2>



<p>The intrigue doesn't end there. </p>



<p>Data from the <a href="https://www.keckobservatory.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">W. M. Keck Observatory</a> shows that CWISE J1249 possesses a different composition, with markedly less iron and other metals than other stars and brown dwarfs.</p>



<p>This unique composition indicates that CWISE J1249 might be quite ancient, possibly from one of the first generations of stars. </p>



<p>The object's breakneck speed has led to theories about its origin. Some speculate that it was part of a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exoplanet-found-in-the-habitable-zone-of-a-binary-star-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">binary system</a> with a white dwarf, which exploded as a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shockingly-bright-carbon-monoxide-detected-in-supernova-remnant/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">supernova</a>. </p>



<p>Alternatively, it might have been part of a globular cluster, a tightly bound cluster of stars, and a fortuitous encounter with a pair of black holes could have flung it off its path.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-collective-effort-in-discovering-fast-moving-star">Collective effort in discovering fast-moving star</h2>



<p>To further investigate these theories, scientists plan to examine the elemental composition of CWISE J1249 more closely. </p>



<p>The discovery was a collective endeavor, involving a medley of participants—volunteers, professionals, and students. </p>



<p>Kabatnik mentions Melina Thévenot and Frank Kiwy, whose efforts significantly contributed to this finding. </p>



<p>This study was led by Adam Burgasser, a professor at the University of California, San Diego (<a href="https://www.ucsd.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCSD</a>), along with co-authors Hunter Brooks and Austin Rothermich, who both commenced their astronomical careers as citizen scientists.</p>

Microbes have a surprising impact on climate change

<p>In recent years, significant strides have been made in reducing the impact of seasonal flu epidemics through public health measures, surveillance, and vaccination efforts targeting human influenza viruses A and B. However, the potential outbreak of avian influenza A, commonly known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-next-pandemic-bird-flu-is-evolving-as-it-infects-new-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bird flu</a>, in mammal species - including humans - poses a substantial public health threat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mutations-help-bird-flu-cross-species-barriers">Mutations help bird flu cross species barriers</h2>



<p>The Cusack group at <a href="https://www.embl.org/sites/grenoble/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EMBL Grenoble</a> has been focusing on the replication processes of influenza viruses, and their latest study sheds light on the mutations that allow the avian influenza virus to replicate within mammalian cells.</p>



<p>Certain strains of avian influenza can cause severe disease and mortality, but key biological differences between birds and mammals usually prevent these viruses from spreading to other species.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-does-bird-flu-infect-mammal-species">How does bird flu infect mammal species?</h2>



<p>To infect mammals, the avian influenza virus must overcome two primary barriers: it must gain the ability to enter mammalian cells and replicate within them. To trigger an epidemic or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/healthy-ecosystems-are-needed-to-prevent-future-pandemics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pandemic</a>, the virus must also evolve to transmit effectively between humans.</p>



<p>Unfortunately, incidents of avian influenza infecting wild and domestic mammals are becoming increasingly common. A particularly concerning development is the recent infection of dairy cows in the United States by an avian H5N1 strain, which risks becoming endemic in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cattle-may-become-a-permanent-host-for-bird-flu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cattle</a>. </p>



<p>This development could facilitate the virus's adaptation to humans, with a few cases of human transmission already reported, though these have so far resulted in only mild symptoms.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-enzyme-responsible-for-virus-replication-nbsp">Enzyme responsible for virus replication<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>Central to this process is the viral polymerase, an enzyme responsible for the virus's replication within host cells. This versatile protein can rearrange itself to perform various functions during the infection process, including transcription - where viral RNA is copied into messenger RNA to produce viral proteins - and replication, where copies of the viral RNA are created to package into new viruses.</p>



<p>Studying viral replication is challenging because it involves two viral polymerases and a host cell protein called ANP32. These three proteins form the replication complex, a molecular machine essential for replication.&nbsp;</p>



<p>ANP32 acts as a stabilizer for certain cellular proteins, thanks to its long acidic tail. Although ANP32's critical role in influenza virus replication was identified in 2015, its precise function remained unclear until now.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-polymerases-perform-distinct-functions-nbsp">Polymerases perform distinct functions<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>The new study, published in <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41467-024-51007-3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Nature Communications</em></a>, reveals that ANP32 serves as a bridge between the two viral polymerases - replicase and encapsidase. These polymerases take on different conformations to perform distinct functions: replicase is involved in creating copies of viral RNA, while encapsidase helps package these copies into a protective coating, with the aid of ANP32.</p>



<p>ANP32's tail plays a crucial role in stabilizing the replication complex, enabling its formation within the host cell. Interestingly, while the core of the ANP32 protein is similar in birds and mammals, the tail differs significantly. This difference explains why avian influenza viruses struggle to replicate in mammals and humans.</p>



<p>“The key difference between avian and human ANP32 is a 33-amino-acid insertion in the avian tail, and the polymerase has to adapt to this difference,” explained Benoît Arragain, a postdoctoral fellow in the Cusack group and first author of the study.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“For the avian-adapted polymerase to replicate in human cells, it must acquire certain mutations to be able to use human ANP32.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insights-into-the-influenza-replication-complex">Insights into the influenza replication complex</h2>



<p>To delve deeper into this process, Arragain and his collaborators obtained the structure of the replicase and encapsidase conformations of a human-adapted avian influenza polymerase from the H7N9 strain while interacting with human ANP32.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This structural information pinpoints the amino acids crucial for forming the replication complex and identifies the mutations that could allow avian influenza polymerase to adapt to mammalian cells.</p>



<p>These findings were made possible through in vitro experiments conducted at EMBL Grenoble, utilizing the Eukaryotic Expression Facility, the ISBG biophysical platform, and the cryo-electron microscopy platform via the <a href="https://www.psb-grenoble.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Partnership for Structural Biology</a>. </p>



<p>“We also collaborated with the Naffakh group at the <a href="https://faireundon.pasteur.fr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institut Pasteur</a>, who carried out cellular experiments,” Arragain added. “Additionally, we obtained the structure of the human type B influenza replication complex, which closely resembles that of influenza A. The cellular experiments confirmed our structural data.”</p>



<p>These new insights into the influenza replication complex are valuable for studying polymerase mutations in other similar avian influenza strains. The structure obtained from the H7N9 strain can be adapted to study other strains such as H5N1.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-of-the-study-nbsp">Broader implications of the study<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>“The threat of a new pandemic caused by highly pathogenic, human-adapted avian influenza strains with a high mortality rate needs to be taken seriously,” said Stephen Cusack, EMBL Grenoble Senior Scientist and study leader, who has been studying influenza viruses for 30 years.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“One of the key responses to this threat includes monitoring mutations in the virus in the field. Knowing this structure allows us to interpret these mutations and assess if a strain is on the path of adaptation to infect and transmit between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/avian-influenza-h5n1-marine-mammals-spreading-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mammals</a>.”</p>



<p>These findings are also significant for the long-term development of anti-influenza drugs, as there are currently no existing drugs that specifically target the replication complex.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“But it's just the beginning. What we want to do next is to understand how the replication complex works dynamically, in other words, to know in more detail how it actively performs replication,” Cusack concluded.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Organ formation is a symphony of interactions, where each moment is defined by a multitude of exchanges at the microscopic level within our bodies.</p>



<p>Our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/t-cells-could-be-used-to-slow-down-or-even-reverse-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cells</a>, the fundamental building blocks of life, are in constant communication, orchestrating the formation of embryonic tissues and, ultimately, organs. </p>



<p>Just as vital urban systems like factories and roads ensure the smooth running of a city, organelles within cells perform myriad tasks to enable proper cell function. </p>



<p>Despite being confined within cells, these organelles play a pivotal role in sculpting our organs during embryogenesis.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-cellular-nucleus">Understanding the cellular nucleus</h2>



<p>The cell nucleus acts as the control center of the cell, storing its genetic material in the form of DNA. This <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-dna-secrets-revealed-by-genomic-time-machine-and-transposable-elements/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DNA holds the instructions</a> needed for the cell to function, grow, and divide. </p>



<p>Surrounding the nucleus is a double membrane called the nuclear envelope, which protects the DNA and controls what goes in and out. Inside, the DNA is organized into structures called chromosomes, which carry the genes that drive all the cell's activities.</p>



<p>Beyond managing genetic info, the nucleus also helps produce ribosomes, the cell’s protein factories. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/junk-proteins-responsible-for-aging-cause-als/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ribosomal RNA (rRNA)</a> is made in a specific area of the nucleus known as the nucleolus. </p>



<p>Once they're ready, ribosomes exit the nucleus and head into the cytoplasm, where they put together proteins based on the DNA instructions. The nucleus is crucial for keeping genetic information intact and making sure cells work as they should.</p>



<p>Our genes switch on and off based on the signals the nucleus receives. However, the significance of the nucleus extends beyond a simple information processing center.</p>



<p>Its physical characteristics could influence the tissue's structure as well. Intrigued by this possibility, Professor Otger Campàs and his team from the Cluster of Excellence Physics of Life of <a href="https://tu-dresden.de/?set_language=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TU Dresden</a> embarked on an investigative journey.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-nuclei-influence-organ-formation">How nuclei influence organ formation</h2>



<p>Professor Campàs was particularly fascinated with how the physical properties of the nucleus could play a role in tissue formation. </p>



<p>The initiative was an extension of previous work at the <a href="https://www.ucsb.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Santa Barbara</a>.</p>



<p>Armed with a curiosity to discern the role of nuclei in the formation of the vertebrate eye and brain, the researchers arrived at a surprising finding. The stiffness of tissue in the zebrafish retina was contingent on the packing of nuclei.</p>



<p>This revelation was unexpected, given the conventional belief that tissue mechanics depended on cell surface interactions and not internal organelles. </p>



<p>The discovery opens up a new research avenue regarding how cells coordinate embryonic development.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-regulating-tissue-organization">Regulating tissue organization</h2>



<p>Past research had unveiled how intercellular forces could liquify tissue to shape <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/experts-grow-models-of-human-embryos-in-the-lab-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">embryos</a>. In contrast, it was discovered that the packing of nuclei could solidify the tissue.</p>



<p>Relative sizes of the nucleus and cell had a significant role to play. Experiments and theoretical analysis revealed that tissue stiffness was directly regulated by the nucleus if it occupied most of the cell space. </p>



<p>Moreover, when nuclei packed rigorously, they arranged the cells into nearly crystalline arrays. This novel insight challenged the prevalent beliefs, establishing a previously unseen role for nuclei in regulating tissue organization and mechanics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organ-formation-the-zebrafish-model">Organ formation: The zebrafish model</h2>



<p>To further probe the relationship between the size of the cell's nucleus and organ formation, the team analyzed zebrafish. These creatures offered great insights, thanks to their transparency during embryonic stages and their rapid maturation.</p>



<p>Key observations made in the developing retina and brain of the zebrafish demonstrated that changes in cell and nuclear sizes during the development stage jammed the nuclei into place. </p>



<p>This organization seemed crucial for processing visual cues, with the "crystalline" order of cells appearing as a result of the jamming of nuclei as the eye develops.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impaired-tissue-architecture">Impaired tissue architecture </h2>



<p>The research also revealed that brain tissues become nuclear jammed, suggesting a broader role for the nucleus in influencing the architecture of several neural tissues.</p>



<p>The study highlights the possibility of nuclear-level defects causing diseases linked to impaired tissue architecture. </p>



<p>This fresh understanding brings us closer to comprehending how cells construct organs during <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-does-cannabis-use-affect-embryonic-development/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">embryonic development</a>. It pushes the boundaries of our existing knowledge, taking us one step further in our quest to comprehend the intricate marvel of life.</p>

<p>The findings from this research hold significant promise for advancing regenerative medicine. </p>



<p>By understanding the pivotal role that nuclei play in tissue organization and mechanics, scientists may develop strategies to manipulate these processes for therapeutic purposes.</p>



<p>For example, if we can learn to control the packing of nuclei, we could potentially enhance tissue regeneration in damaged organs or even guide the formation of new tissues in lab settings. </p>

<p>Our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/all-domestic-horses-have-ancestors-in-russia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">equine friends</a>, horses, just galloped past the conventional wisdom about their intelligence. It turns out they're quite smarter than we've been giving them credit for, according to a fascinating study by Nottingham Trent University.</p>



<p>Leading the study is seasoned equine scientist, Dr. Carrie Ijichi, alongside fellow researcher Louise Evans from the School of Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences at <a href="https://www.ntu.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nottingham Trent University</a>.</p>



<p>The experts embarked upon this journey of discovery to understand more about how horses learn, a valuable insight that could help us train them more humanely and improve their welfare.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testing-the-intelligence-of-horses">Testing the intelligence of horses</h2>



<p>The team set up a unique experiment to see how smart horses really are. The rules? Horses had to touch a piece of card with their noses to get a treat. </p>



<p>A simple task, but the researchers added a twist. The horses were not rewarded if they touched the card while a light was on but rewarded when the light was off.</p>



<p>Despite the change in conditions, horses continued to touch the card whether the light was on or off, still bagging in those goodies they love so much.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-horses-can-adapt-to-the-rules">Horses can adapt to the rules</h2>



<p>In a final twist, the scientists introduced an unexpected penalty - a 10-second timeout where the horses couldn't play the game or receive a reward if they touched the card while the "stop" light was on. Then, something remarkable happened.</p>



<p>The horses, rather abruptly, began to play the game "correctly," only touching the card at the right point to receive their treat. It was as if they were adapting their strategy, sticking with the game plan only when there was a risk of penalty involved.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-are-horses-natural-geniuses">Are horses natural geniuses?</h2>



<p>These clever responses from the horses were not anticipated initially. "At first, we found that horses would just keep touching the card over and over, as they probably realized they would still get a frequent reward with minimal mental effort," noted Dr. Ijichi.</p>



<p>However, the smart responses of the horses when penalties were introduced signified their understanding of the game. This ability to switch strategies and behave differently when a risk was introduced showed a surprising level of cognitive processing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-intelligence-of-horses">Unexpected intelligence of horses</h2>



<p>"Our horses immediately improved when we introduced a cost for errors. This suggests that the horses knew all along what the rules of the game were," said Louise Evans.</p>



<p>The results indicate that the horses were able to use a form of learning called "model-based learning." This cognitive capacity was thought to be beyond their reach.</p>



<p>Even more exciting is the fact that this cognitive ability is usually attributed to the human pre-frontal cortex. Horses, not having a well-developed equivalent, still demonstrated this level of sophistication, suggesting they are using a different part of their brains to achieve similar results.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>



<p>As we venture further into understanding equine intelligence, this research opens the door to numerous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/horse-miscarriages-offer-insights-into-human-pregnancy-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">future investigations</a>. Further studies could explore the extent of horses’ cognitive flexibility and how various environmental factors influence their learning processes. </p>



<p>Additionally, examining differences in intelligence among various breeds could help refine training techniques tailored to individual horses' strengths. </p>



<p>By continuing to expand our knowledge of equine cognition, we move closer to creating a world where horses are recognized not only for their physical prowess but also for their remarkable mental capabilities. </p>

The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



<p>The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



<p>Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.</p>



<p>The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



<p>This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.</p>



<p>The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.</p>

Workers provided ample training to become competent with AI software have significantly lower stress.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet <em>Archaeopteris</em>: the first modern tree</h2>



<p>The star of this ancient forest is <em>Archaeopteris</em> – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur <em>Archaeopteryx</em>. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.</p>



<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<p>By 1976, when scientists cataloged all acidified lakes in the Adirondack Park, researchers found that half of the lakes over 2,000 feet above sea level had no fish, according to studies published in environmental journals. The acidification process worked like a slow-motion disaster. As acid rain fell into watersheds, it gradually lowered pH levels. Fish couldn't survive in acidic water, and their food sources died off too.</p>



<p>Trees at high elevations showed stress directly linked to acid rain. It weakened them by leaching nutrients and making them susceptible to disease. Historical records show Germany's Black Forest saw nearly half its trees damaged by the mid-1980s.</p>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>

<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.</p>



<p>“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. </p>



<p>The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.</p>



<p>“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”</p>



<p>The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.</p>

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?</p>



<p>One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;</p>
